Tick salivary proteins are crucial for efficient and successful tick feeding. Most of them are still uncharacterized, especially those involved in the formation of tick cement. Tick salivary protein PA107 is a putative cement protein, which is transcribed in salivary glands during the initial phase of tick feeding. It is a tick-unique protein, with homologs described in several tick genera. In this study, a detailed in silico analysis of its primary and tertiary structure was performed, along with the immunogenicity assessment for the PA107 protein from Ixodes ricinus species. The screening of the primary structure placed it to the glycine-rich protein family, revealing in parallel an overlapping 15mer at the C-terminus and borderline homology to non-tick proteins with antimicrobial activity. The analysis of tertiary structure revealed a high degree of intrinsic disorder for monomeric PA107, in contrast to highly ordered structures for different oligomeric states that might correlate with the putative role in the tick cement formation process. Regarding in silico PA107 immunogenicity inference, obtained results were inconclusive, which aligns with the in vitro findings showing definitely the lack of humoral response induction in experimentally infested rats and persons bitten by the I. ricinus ticks. The results represent new pieces of a huge puzzle depicting a complex tick-host relationship, but also identify PA107 as a possible compound of novel formulations to be used in biomedicine as bioadhesives, and as a target for new anti-tick strategies, by interfering with the cement cone formation and stability, i.e. tick attachment and feeding., Competing Interests: Declarations. While past research has emphasized the importance of late blight infection detection and classification, anticipating the potato late blight infection is crucial from the economic point of view as it helps to significantly reduce the production cost. Furthermore, it is necessary to minimize the exposure of potatoes to harmful chemicals and pesticides due to their potential adverse effects on the human immune system. Our work is based on the precise classification of late blight infections in potatoes in European countries using real-time data from 1980 to 2000. To predict the potato late blight outbreak, we incorporated several hybrid machine learning models, as well as a unique combination of stacking classifier and logistic regression, achieving the highest prediction accuracy of 87.22%. Further enhancements of these models and the use of new data sources may lead to a higher late blight prediction accuracy and, consequently, a higher efficiency in managing potatoes' health.

The progression of monoclonal gammopathies is affected by a range of factors, including the microenvironment surrounding plasma cells. It is recognized that TGF-β1 plays a distinct role in stimulating IgA production. Hence, this study aims to investigate whether individuals with serum IgA monoclonal immunoglobulins (paraproteins) exhibit elevated total TGF-β1 levels compared to those with IgG or IgM paraproteins. To achieve this goal, individuals with a positive laboratory finding of monoclonal gammopathy were segregated according to the paraprotein class as well as according to the type of the light chain. Total TGF-β1 levels were assessed in blood serum samples containing IgG (n = 50), IgA (n = 46), and IgM (n = 31) paraproteins. Elevated level of TGF-β1 was confirmed in sera with IgA paraproteins (median 25.8 ng/mL; interquartile range IQR: 19.0-33.7) compared to those having IgG (median: 18.2 ng/mL; IQR: 14.3-22.1; p < 0.001) or IgM paraproteins (21.5 ng/mL; IQR: 15.0-27.4; p = 0.043). Also, a higher TGF-β1 level was detected in sera with IgMλ than those with IgMκ paraproteins (p = 0.043). Amino acids (AAs) have broad nutritional, therapeutic, and medical significance and thus are one of the most common active ingredients of nutritional supplements. Analytical strategies for determining AAs are high-priced and often limited to methods that require modification of AA polarity or incorporation of an aromatic moiety. The aim of this work was to develop a new method for the determination of L-arginine, L-ornithine, and L-lysine on low-cost microchip electrophoresis instrumentation conjugated with capacitively coupled contactless conductivity detection. A solution consisting of 0.3 M acetic acid and 1 × 10 -5 M iminodiacetic acid has been identified as the optimal background electrolyte, ensuring the shortest possible analysis time. The short migration times of amino acids (t ≤ 64 s) and method simplicity resulted in high analysis throughput with high precision and linearity (R 2 ≥ 0.9971). The limit of detection values ranged from 0.15 to 0.19 × 10 -6 M. The accuracy of the proposed method was confirmed by recovery measurements. The results were compared with CE-UV-VIS and HPLC-DAD methods and showed good agreement. This work represents the first successful demonstration of the ME-C 4 D analysis of L-arginine, L-ornithine, and L-lysine in real samples.

The widespread use of IoT devices has led to the generation of a huge amount of data and driven the need for analytical solutions in many areas of human activities, such as the field of smart agriculture. Continuous monitoring of crop growth stages enables timely interventions, such as control of weeds and plant diseases, as well as pest control, ensuring optimal development. Decision-making systems in smart agriculture involve image analysis with the potential to increase productivity, efficiency and sustainability. By applying Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), state recognition and classification can be performed based on images from specific locations. Thus, we have developed a solution for early problem detection and resource management optimization. The main concept of the proposed solution relies on a direct connection between Cloud and Edge devices, which is achieved through Fog computing. The goal of our work is creation of a deep learning model for image classification that can be optimized and adapted for implementation on devices with limited hardware resources at the level of Fog computing. This could increase the importance of image processing in the reduction of agricultural operating costs and manual labor. As a result of the off-load data processing at Edge and Fog devices, the system responsiveness can be improved, the costs associated with data transmission and storage can be reduced, and the overall system reliability and security can be increased. The proposed solution can choose classification algorithms to find a trade-off between size and accuracy of the model optimized for devices with limited hardware resources. After testing our model for tomato disease classification compiled for execution on FPGA, it was found that the decrease in test accuracy is as small as 0.83% (from 96.29% to 95.46%).

Growing volumes of textile waste and heavy metal pollution of water are emerging environmental challenges. In an attempt to tackle these issues, a non-woven sorbent based on jute fibers was fabricated by recycling the textile waste from the carpet industry. The influence of contact time, concentration, pH and temperature on the sorption of lead and copper ions from aqueous solutions was studied. In order to enhance the sorption capacity of the non-woven material, in situ synthesis of polyaniline (PANI) in the presence of TiO 2 nanostructures was performed. The contribution of TiO 2 nanoparticles and TiO 2 nanotubes to the uniformity of PANI coating and overall sorption behavior was compared. Electrokinetic measurements indicated increased swelling of modified fibers. FTIR and Raman spectroscopy revealed the formation of the emeraldine base form of PANI. FESEM confirmed the creation of the uniform nanocomposite coating over jute fibers. The modification with PANI/TiO 2 nanocomposite resulted in a more than 3-fold greater sorption capacity of the material for lead ions, and a 2-fold greater absorption capacity for copper ions independently of applied TiO 2 nanostructure. The participation of both TiO 2 nanostructures in PANI synthesis resulted in excellent cover of jute fibers, but the form of TiO 2 had a negligible effect on metal ion uptake.

In cognitive neuroscience and psychology, reaction times are an important behavioral measure. However, in instrumental learning and goal-directed decision making experiments, findings often rely only on choice probabilities from a value-based model, instead of reaction times. Recent advancements have shown that it is possible to connect value-based decision models with reaction time models. However, typically these models do not provide an integrated account of both value-based choices and reaction times, but simply link two types of models. Here, we propose a novel integrative joint model of both choices and reaction times by combining a computational account of Bayesian sequential decision making with a sampling procedure. This allows us to describe how internal uncertainty in the planning process shapes reaction time distributions. Specifically, we use a recent context-specific Bayesian forward planning model which we extend by a Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) sampler to obtain both choices and reaction times. As we will show this makes the sampler an integral part of the decision making process and enables us to reproduce, using simulations, well-known experimental findings in value based-decision making as well as classical inhibition and switching tasks. Specifically, we use the proposed model to explain both choice behavior and reaction times in instrumental learning and automatized behavior, in the Eriksen flanker task and in task switching. The analysis of dietary supplements is far less regulated than pharmaceuticals, leading to potential quality issues. Considering their positive effect, many athletes consume supplements containing L-histidine and β-alanine. A new microfluidic method for the determination of L-histidine and β-alanine in dietary supplement formulations has been developed. For the first time, capacitively coupled contactless conductivity detection was employed for the microchip electrophoresis of amino acids in real samples. A linear relationship between detector response and concentration was observed in the range of 10-100 µmol L -1 for L-histidine (R 2  = 0.9968) and β-alanine (R 2  = 0.9954), while achieved limits of detection (3 × S/N ratio) were 4.2 µmol L -1 and 5.2 µmol L -1 , respectively. The accuracy of the method was confirmed using recovery experiments as well as CE-UV-VIS and HPLC-UV-VIS techniques. Ising machines, which are hardware implementations of the Ising model of coupled spins, have been influential in the development of unsupervised learning algorithms at the origins of Artificial Intelligence (AI). However, their application to AI has been limited due to the complexities in matching supervised training methods with Ising machine physics, even though these methods are essential for achieving high accuracy. In this study, we demonstrate an efficient approach to train Ising machines in a supervised way through the Equilibrium Propagation algorithm, achieving comparable results to software-based implementations. We employ the quantum annealing procedure of the D-Wave Ising machine to train a fully-connected neural network on the MNIST dataset. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the machine's connectivity supports convolution operations, enabling the training of a compact convolutional network with minimal spins per neuron. Background and Objectives : The ARNE score was developed for the prediction of a difficult airway for both general and ear, nose and throat (ENT) surgery with a universal cut-off value. We tested the accuracy of this score in the case of laryngeal surgery and provided an insight into its effects in combination with flexible laryngoscopy. Materials and Methods : This prospective pilot clinical study included 100 patients who were being scheduled for microscopic laryngeal surgery. We calculated the ARNE score for every patient, and flexible laryngoscopy was provided preoperative. Difficult intubation was assessed according to the intubation difficulty score (IDS). Results : A total of 33% patients had difficult intubation according to the IDS. The ARNE score showed limited accuracy for the prediction of difficult intubation in laryngology with p < 0.0001 and an AUC of 0.784. Flexible laryngoscopy also showed limitations when used as an independent parameter with p < 0.0001 and an AUC of 0.766. We defined a new cut-off value of 15.50 for laryngology, according to the AUC. After the patients were divided into two groups, according to the new cut-off value and provided cut-off value, the AUC improved to 0.707 from 0.619, respectively. Flexible laryngoscopy improved the prediction model of the ARNE score to an AUC of 0.882 and of the new cut-off value to an AUC of 0.833. Conclusions : It is recommended to use flexible laryngoscopy together with the ARNE score in difficult airway prediction in patients with laryngeal pathology. Also, the universally recommended cut-off value of 11 cannot be effectively used in laryngology, and a new cut-off value of 15.50 is recommended.

The syntheses of Ag-based nanoparticles (NPs) with the assistance of plant extracts have been shown to be environmentally benign and cost-effective alternatives to conventional chemical syntheses. This study discusses the application of Paliurus spina-christi , Juglans regia , Humulus lupulus , and Sambucus nigra leaf extracts for in situ synthesis of Ag-based NPs on cotton fabric modified with citric acid. The presence of NPs with an average size ranging from 57 to 99 nm on the fiber surface was confirmed by FESEM. XPS analysis indicated that metallic (Ag 0 ) and/or ionic silver (Ag 2 O and AgO) appeared on the surface of the modified cotton. The chemical composition, size, shape, and amounts of synthesized NPs were strongly dependent on the applied plant extract. All fabricated nanocomposites exhibited excellent antifungal activity against yeast Candida albicans . Antibacterial activity was significantly stronger against Gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus than Gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli . In addition, 99% of silver was retained on the samples after 24 h of contact with physiological saline solution, implying a high stability of nanoparticles. Cytotoxic activity towards HaCaT and MRC5 cells was only observed for the sample synthetized in the presence of H. lupulus extract. Excellent antimicrobial activity and non-cytotoxicity make the developed composites efficient candidates for medicinal applications.

Cardiac surgery (CS) with extracorporeal circulation (ECC), induces intense oxidative stress (OS) and systemic inflammatory response (SIR), which may seriously affect postoperative lung function. We aimed to test if high parenteral (200 mg/kg/24 h) daily doses of Vitamin C (VitC), given within 48 h after the beginning of the operation, may reduce the incidence and severity of postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs) in CS patients. This single-center, prospective, randomized, single-blinded, interventional trial included 150 patients, assigned to control Group A ( n = 75) and interventional Group B ( n = 75). Group B intraoperatively received one-fourth (i.e., 50 mg/kg) of the planned daily Vit C dose, divided into three equal parts and diluted in 10 mL of normal saline, while Group A received an equal volume of normal saline at the same time frames (i.e., the induction of anesthesia, aortic cross-clamp release, and sternal closure). After 6 h from the first intraoperative dose, the following regimen was applied: Group B: 50 mg/kg, 30 min i.v. infusion of VitC in 50 mL of normal saline, every 6 h, for the next 48 h, and Group A: 30 min i.v. infusion of an equal volume of normal saline every 6 h, for the next 48 h. Modified Kroenke's score was used to determine the incidence and severity of PPCs. The overall incidence of PPCs was 36.7% and was significantly lower in Group B (13.3% vs. 60.0%, p < 0.001). The PPCs severity score was also significantly lower in Group B (1 vs. 3, p < 0.001). In addition, patients from Group B had significantly less damaged lungs, better postoperative renal function, shorter ICU stays, fewer ICU re-admissions, and lower hospital mortality. No VitC-related adverse effects were recorded. High parenteral daily VitC doses given within 48 h after the beginning of CS are safe and effective in reducing the incidence and severity of PPCs. A multicenter RCT is needed to confirm these results.

We study chaotic dynamics and anomalous transport in a Bose-Hubbard chain in the semiclassical regime (the limit when the number of particles goes to infinity). We find that the system has mixed phase space with both regular and chaotic dynamics, even for long chains with up to 100 wells. The consequence of the mixed phase space is strongly anomalous diffusion in the space of occupation numbers, with a discrete set of transport exponents. After very long times the system crosses over to the hydrodynamic regime with normal diffusion. Anomalous transport is quite universal and almost completely independent of the parameters of the model (Coulomb interaction and chemical potential): It is mainly determined by the initial distribution of particles along the chain. We corroborate our findings by analytical arguments: scaling analysis for the anomalous regime and the Langevin equation for the normal diffusion regime.

Objective: To evaluate the 5-year clinical performance of a glass hybrid restorative system and a nano-hybrid resin composite in moderate to large two-surface class II cavities., Materials and Methods: This study was carried out by dental schools in Zagreb, Croatia; Izmir, Turkey; Belgrade, Serbia; and Milan, Italy. A total of 180 patients requiring two class-II two-surface restorations in the molars of the same jaw were recruited. The teeth were randomly restored with either a nano-hybrid resin composite (Tetric EvoCeram, Ivoclar Vivadent) or a glass-hybrid material (EQUIA Forte, GC). During the 5-year follow-up, two calibrated evaluators at each centre scored the restorations annually using the FDI-2 scoring system. The survival rates were calculated using the Kaplan-Meier method and compared using non-parametric matched pair tests (p < 0.05)., Results: There were no statistically significant differences between the overall survival and success rates of the two types of restorations (p>0.05). The success rates (FDI-2 scores 1-3) for EQUIA Forte were 81.9% (average annual failure rate: 3.9%) and 90.7% for Tetric EvoCeram (average annual failure rate: 1.9%). The survival rates (FDI-2 scores 1-4) for EQUIA Forte and Tetric EvoCeram were 94.5% and 94.4%, respectively, with an average annual failure rate of 1.1%., Conclusions: In terms of success and survival rates, both the glass-hybrid restorative system and the nano-hybrid resin composite have been shown to perform satisfactorily., Clinical Relevance: The results of this study indicate that EQUIA Forte can be one of the therapeutic options for moderate to large two-surface class II restorations of posterior teeth., (© 2024. Background: While granulatamides A and B have been previously isolated, their biological activities have been only partially examined. The aim of this study was to synthesize granulatamide B (4b), a tryptamine-derivative naturally occurring in Eunicella coral species, using the well-known procedure of Sun and Fürstner and its 12 structural analogues by modifying the side chain, which differs in length, degree of saturation as well as number and conjugation of double bonds., Methods: The prepared library of compounds underwent comprehensive assessment for their biological activities, encompassing antioxidative, antiproliferative, and antibacterial properties, in addition to in vivo toxicity evaluation using a Zebrafish model. Compound 4i, which consists of a retinoic acid moiety, exhibited the strongest scavenging activity against ABTS radicals (IC 50 = 36 ± 2 μM). In addition, 4b and some of the analogues (4a, 4c and 4i), mostly containing an unsaturated chain and conjugated double bonds, showed moderate but non-selective activity with certain IC 50 values in the range of 20-40 μM., Results: In contrast, the analogue 4l, a derivative of alpha-linolenic acid, was the least toxic towards normal cell lines. Moreover, 4b was also highly active against Gram-positive Bacillus subtilis with an MIC of 125 μM. Nevertheless, both 4b and 4i, known for the best-observed effects, caused remarkable developmental abnormalities in the zebrafish model Danio rerio ., Conclusion: Since modification of the side chain did not significantly alter the change in biological activities compared to the parent compound, granulatamide B (4b), the substitution of the indole ring needs to be considered. Spintronic nano-synapses and nano-neurons perform neural network operations with high accuracy thanks to their rich, reproducible and controllable magnetization dynamics. These dynamical nanodevices could transform artificial intelligence hardware, provided they implement state-of-the-art deep neural networks. However, there is today no scalable way to connect them in multilayers. Here we show that the flagship nano-components of spintronics, magnetic tunnel junctions, can be connected into multilayer neural networks where they implement both synapses and neurons thanks to their magnetization dynamics, and communicate by processing, transmitting and receiving radiofrequency signals. We build a hardware spintronic neural network composed of nine magnetic tunnel junctions connected in two layers, and show that it natively classifies nonlinearly separable radiofrequency inputs with an accuracy of 97.7%. Using physical simulations, we demonstrate that a large network of nanoscale junctions can achieve state-of-the-art identification of drones from their radiofrequency transmissions, without digitization and consuming only a few milliwatts, which constitutes a gain of several orders of magnitude in power consumption compared to currently used techniques. Introduction: Comprehensive and interprofessional undergraduate teaching and training in special care dentistry (SCD) could influence future dentists' attitudes towards patients with disabilities. The aim of the study was to assess the influence of role play as part of SCD training on the attitudes of undergraduates towards patients with disabilities., Method: The students attending the SCD module during the autumn semester of 2019 comprised our target population. A quasi-experimental design was used to compare the attitudinal scores between three groups of students exposed to different modalities of SCD teaching: group 1 - didactic teaching (N = 92), group 2 - didactic teaching and clinical training in the dental treatment of children or elderly patients with disabilities (N = 142), group 3 - theoretical teaching and clinical training, accompanied by role play sessions featuring persons with disabilities (N = 20). The contact rate was 100%. The outcomes of the intervention were measured using the altruism scale, which forms part of the International Association for Disability and Oral Health (iADH) Toolbox for measuring attitudes and intended behaviors towards persons with disabilities., Results: The analysis revealed the two-factor structure of the nine-item altruism scale. The first factor was described as the acceptance of oral health care as a universal human right, while the second was the perception of the contribution of marginalised groups, including people with disabilities, to the community. Background: Head and neck surgery is considered high-risk for difficult intubation and accidental extubation. Laryngomicroscopy implies surgical manipulations at the level of the vocal cords. Also, this type of surgery demands a particular position for the patient during the whole surgical intervention. All of this makes accidental extubation even more possible., Methods: We included a total of 100 patients scheduled for laryngomicroscopy in the study. We have assessed patients' general and clinical data and provided necessary measurements. After the intubation, we documented the depth of the endotracheal tube at the level of the upper incisors and repeated the measurement after the surgical intervention. We recorded all possible difficulties encountered by the surgeon., Results: We found a significantly more frequent tube dislocation in patients from the difficult intubation group, with χ 2 =6.632, p =0.010. Inter-incisor gap (IIG) and modified Mallampati score showed statistical significance regarding tube dislocation, with p values of 0.002 and 0.047, respectively. There was statistical significance between tube dislocation and difficulties experienced by surgeons, with χ 2 =13.504 and p =0.001. According to the area under the curve (AUC) at the Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, the cut-off value for significant tube dislocation was 1.15 cm. When we divided the enrolled patients into two groups, below and above the cut-off value, the IIG maintained statistical significance with a cut-off value of 5.25 cm., Conclusions: Modified Mallampati score and IIG are considered valuable parameters for rapid preoperative risk assessment of possible accidental extubation. The final depth of the endotracheal tube should be about two cm deeper than necessary, as long as there is adequate ventilation on both sides of the lungs. Difficult intubation undoubtedly represents a risk for accidental extubation occurrence. The health supplement industry is one of the fastest growing industries in the world, but there is a lack of suitable analytical methods for the determination of active compounds in health supplements such as peptides. The present work describes an implementation of contactless conductivity detection on microchip technology as a new strategy for the electrophoretic determination of L-carnosine in complex health supplement formulations without pre-concentration and derivatization steps. The best results were obtained in the case of +1.00 kV applied for 20 s for injection and +2.75 kV applied for 260 s for the separation step. Under the selected conditions, a linear detector response of 5 × 10 -6 to 5 × 10 -5 M was achieved. L-carnosine retention time was 61 s. The excellent reproducibility of both migration time and detector response confirmed the high precision of the method. The applicability of the method was demonstrated by the determination of L-carnosine in three different samples of health supplements. The recoveries ranged from 91 to 105%. Subsequent analysis of the samples by CE-UV-VIS and HPLC-DAD confirmed the accuracy of the obtained results.

Beneficial effects of a natural zeolite clinoptilolite in vivo on mammals, including humans, have been empirically observed and documented in literature. The positive biological activities have been associated to its detoxifying and antioxidative properties, and its immunostimulative and adsorption properties. Herein, we present the in vitro and in vivo study of clinoptilolite zeolite materials adsorption properties for d-glucose. In particular, we present data on the interaction of d-glucose on the tested zeolites' surface obtained by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and quantification by ultra high-performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC). We also present results on the reduction of blood glucose levels in mice pre-treated with clinoptilolite in vivo upon feeding with d-glucose. In vivo results were in line with the in vitro adsorption and/or interaction properties of tested zeolite materials for d-glucose and were quantified by UHPLC as well (11.34% for TMAZ; 10.82% for PMA and 8.76% for PMAO2). In vivo experiments in mice showed that PMA zeolite reduces blood glucose levels upon 15 min for 13% (at p < 0.05) up to 19.11% upon 120 min (without statistical significance) in clinoptilolite pre-treated mice fed by addition of d-glucose. Due to lack of explicit mechanistic knowledge on zeolite clinoptilolite interactions or adsorption with sugars in vitro and in vivo, presented study provides novel insights into these aspects for researchers in the field. Objectives: To identify the involvement of Serbian paediatric dentists in oral health promotion and education, and to propose further actions for the improvement of these activities., Methods: This is an analysis of data collected by a cross-sectional, questionnaire-based survey of 445 dentists involved in the provision of dental health services to children at the primary healthcare level. We explored dentists' involvement in oral health education and promotion and the cooperation with other health professionals at the healthcare centre and the community level as well as their attitudes towards the importance of some factors influencing their work., Results: Dentists estimate their cooperation with different services with ratings higher than 3 on the scale of 1 to 5. They reported the highest satisfaction in cooperation with paediatric services for preschool and schoolchildren (4.0±1.0). At the community level, they reported excellent cooperation with kindergartens (4.4±0.8), while collaboration with Roma health mediators (3.14±1.34) and nongovernmental organizations (2.5±1.4) received lower ratings. The combination of accelerated digitalization and the recent COVID-19 crisis has increased the number of remote workers worldwide to unimaginable proportions. Among the large number of remote workers that execute their projects from home, there is a significant number of permanently self-employed remote workers, usually referred to as freelancers. Despite the importance of this kind of business activity for modern project management society, perceived drivers of freelancing are still unknown. The goal of this paper was to shed some light on the general subjective well-being of freelancing activity and investigate differences concerning gender, age, and education. The study was performed in late 2020 and included 471 freelancers from Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia, and Montenegro that participated in an online questionnaire evaluating their subjective well-being while participating in the "gig" economy. Factor analysis was used as a primary statistical method and two major groups were identified: (1) Impact of working from home on a freelancer's personal life and health and (2) Fulfillment of expectations in the economic and professional sense. Gender was found not to be significant for overall work satisfaction. However, older freelancers proved to be more satisfied with the fulfillment of economic and professional expectations, which correlate with years of professional experience. Another conclusion is that more educated freelancers are generally less satisfied with both groups of drivers - fulfillment of personal life and professional expectations. Understanding how the combination of occupations, technological infrastructure, and demographic characteristics in the region has affected the well-being of freelancers may help policymakers and organization owners, as well as future entrepreneurs, better prepare for this model of work in the future. It also increases the possibility of exploring individual dimensions of wellbeing useful for targeting interventions at the level of each country separately. Forward planning is crucial to maximize outcome in complex sequential decision-making scenarios. In this cross-sectional study, we were particularly interested in age-related differences of forward planning. We presumed that especially older individuals would show a shorter planning depth to keep the costs of model-based decision-making within limits. To test this hypothesis, we developed a sequential decision-making task to assess forward planning in younger (age < 40 years; n = 25) and older (age > 60 years; n = 27) adults. By using reinforcement learning modelling, we inferred planning depths from participants' choices. Our results showed significantly shorter planning depths and higher response noise for older adults. Age differences in planning depth were only partially explained by well-known cognitive covariates such as working memory and processing speed. Consistent with previous findings, this indicates age-related shifts away from model-based behaviour in older adults. Stress is an integral part of life. While acute responses to stress are generally regarded as beneficial in dealing with immediate threats, chronic exposure to threatening stimuli exerts deleterious effects and can be either a contributing or an aggravating factor for many chronic diseases including cancer. Chronic psychological stress has been identified as a significant factor contributing to the development and progression of cancer, but the mechanisms that link chronic stress to cancer remain incompletely understood. Psychological stressors initiate multiple physiological responses that result in the activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, sympathetic nervous system, and the subsequent changes in immune function. Chronic stress exposure disrupts the homeostatic communication between the neuroendocrine and immune systems, shifting immune signaling toward a proinflammatory state. Stress-induced chronic low-grade inflammation and a decline in immune surveillance are both implicated in cancer development and progression. Conversely, tumor-induced inflammatory cytokines, apart from driving a tumor-supportive inflammatory microenvironment, can also exert their biological actions distantly via circulation and therefore adversely affect the stress response. In this minireview, we summarize the current findings on the relationship between stress and cancer, focusing on the role of inflammation in stress-induced neuroendocrine-immune crosstalk. The behavior of a new 1,3-dioctadecyl-1 H -imidazol-3-ium tetraphenylborate (DODI-TPB) surfactant sensor was studied in single and complex mixtures of technical grade QACs-benzalkonium chloride (BAC), N,N -didecyl- N,N -dimethylammonium chloride (DDAC), and N,N -dioctyl- N,N -dimethylammonium chloride (DOAC) usually used in COVID-19 disinfecting agents formulations. The results obtained with the new DODI-TPB sensor were in good agreement with data measured by a 1,3-dihexadecyl-1 H -benzo[ d ]imidazol-3-ium-tetraphenylborate (DMI-TPB) surfactant sensor, as well as two-phase titration used as a reference method. The quantitative titrations of a two-component mixture of the cationic homologs (a) DDAC and DOAC; and (b) BAC and DOAC showed that the new DODI-TPB surfactant sensor can clearly distinguish two separate mixture components in a single potentiometric titration curve with two characteristic inflexion points. The consumption of SDS (used as a titrant) in the end-point 1 (EP 1) corresponded to the content of DDAC (or BAC), whereas the consumption in the end-point 2 (EP 2) corresponded to the total content of both cationic surfactants in the mixture. DOAC content in both mixtures can be calculated from the difference of the titrant used to achieve EP1 and EP2. The addition of nonionic surfactants resulted in the signal change decrease from 333.2 mV (1:0; no nonionic surfactant added) to 243.0 mV (1:10, w / w ). The sensor was successfully tested in ten two-component COVID-19 disinfecting formulations.

Given the environmental burden of textile industry, especially of dyeing processes and the volume of synthetic dyes and surfactants, the intensive development of the greener approaches is under way. Herein, an environmentaly-friendly dyeing of polyamide (PA) and PA/Elastane (PA/EA) knits using live bacterial approach in water environment, completely eliminating usage of textile auxiliaries is described. A total of 12 pigment-producing Streptomyces strains were isolated and purified from soil and rizoshere or bark of smoke tree Cotinus coggygria samples. The antibacterial, antifungal and cytotoxic effects of crude bacterial extracts were tested. Antimicrobial effect was obtained by the majority of extracts but only two streptomycetes extracts, 11-5 and BPS51, showed moderate cytotoxicity against HaCaT human cell line. This was the reason to select 11-5 and BPS51 strains for the dyeing of the textile materials. Excellent properties of dyeing wool, silk and PA are achieved initially using live cultures, and the bioprocess is optimized on commercial PA and PA/EA knits used for stockings production. Satisfactory coloration of both knits is achieved with dynamic conditions (culture shaking at 180 rpm over 5-14 days at 30 ºC) giving the best coloration results, except in the case of the PA sample dyed with a bacterial strain 11-5. The prolongation of dyeing time leads to higher color yields independently of fabric and bacteria strain. Although the color differences between the samples before and after washing are observed, washing fastness after three washing cycles can be considered as satisfactory., (© 2022. Purpose: The study was undertaken with the aim to determine gender-specific differences in incident hemodialysis (HD) patient and their changes over time., Methods: The retrospective longitudinal closed cohort study involved 441 incident patients starting HD in 2014 and followed for 1-59 (median 43, IQR 40) months. Demographic, clinical data, treatment characteristics, laboratory findings and outcome were abstracted from the patients' medical records., Results: The relative number of males on HD was about twice that of females throughout the five years investigated. At the beginning of the study, no significant differences were found in the main demographic and clinical characteristics except that diabetes was more often the underlying disease in men than in women. Systolic blood pressure decreased over time significantly more in females than in males. Throughout the study spKt/V was significantly higher in females than in males, but it increased in patients of both genders. There were no gender differences for comorbidities, vascular access and the majority of laboratory findings except for higher serum levels of creatinine and CRP in men than in women. Relatively more females were treated with erythropoiesis stimulating agents and phosphate binders than males. Age and malignancy were selected as significant predictors of mortality for both genders, and, in addition, polycystic kidney disease, serum level of albumin and CRP for men, but spKt/V for women., Conclusion: Some significant gender differences were observed throughout, while others appeared during the study but none of them were due to gender inequalities in the applied treatment., (© 2022. To enhance endodontics, the search for new antibacterials that can improve infected tooth root canal treatment is ongoing. As potent antibacterial and antibiofilm agents, essential oils (EOs) have been suggested as novel endodontic materials. Several studies indicate that EO-based irrigants and medicaments show promising reductive potential against the most important intracanal pathogen, Enterococcus faecalis , and notably contribute to intracanal biofilm eradication. In terms of additional benefits that EO-based endodontic materials can provide, their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory potential are also important, but they have only scarcely been explored in research. Investigations into the benefits of EO-based endodontic materials together with their biocompatibility are needed. The results presented in this review strongly encourage further research on this topic.

A low-cost and fast potentiometric surfactant sensor for cationic surfactants, based on the new ion-pair 1,3-dioctadecyl-1 H -imidazol-3-ium-tetraphenylborate (DODI-TPB), is presented. The new cationic surfactant DODI-Br was synthesized and characterized by NMR, LC-MS, and elemental analysis, and was used for synthesis of the DODI-TPB ionophore. The DODI-TPB surfactant sensor was obtained by implementation of the ionophore in PVC. The sensor showed excellent response characteristics with near-Nernstian slopes to the cationic surfactants DMIC, CPC, CTAB, and Hyamine 1622. The highest voltage responses were obtained for DMIC and CPC (58.7 mV/decade of activity). DMIC had the lowest detection limit (0.9 × 10 -6 M) and the broadest useful linear concentration range (1.8 × 10 -6 to 1.0 × 10 -4 M). An interference study showed remarkable stability. Potentiometric titration curves for the titration of cationic surfactants (DMIC, CPC, CTAB, and Hyamine 1622), with DDS and TPB used as titrants, showed sigmoidal curves with well-defined inflexion points and a broad signal change. The standard addition method was successfully applied with recovery rates from 98.9 to 101.2 at two concentrations. The amount of cationic surfactant found in disinfectants and antiseptics was in good agreement with the referent two-phase titration method and the surfactant sensor on the market. This new surfactant sensor represents a low-cost alternative to existing methods for cationic surfactant detection.

Precisely timed behavior and accurate time perception plays a critical role in our everyday lives, as our wellbeing and even survival can depend on well-timed decisions. Although the temporal structure of the world around us is essential for human decision making, we know surprisingly little about how representation of temporal structure of our everyday environment impacts decision making. How does the representation of temporal structure affect our ability to generate well-timed decisions? Here we address this question by using a well-established dynamic probabilistic learning task. Using computational modeling, we found that human subjects' beliefs about temporal structure are reflected in their choices to either exploit their current knowledge or to explore novel options. The model-based analysis illustrates a large within-group and within-subject heterogeneity. To explain these results, we propose a normative model for how temporal structure is used in decision making, based on the semi-Markov formalism in the active inference framework. Background: As the pandemic time went by in Bosnia and Herzegovina (B&H), various patterns toward COVID-19 itself and its impacts, implementation of prescribed preventive measures among the team members, and those of their patients, including immunization process, have been revealed. These patterns were of both empirical and evidence-based kind and consequently formed dental personnel behavior. The aim was to evaluate and compare the COVID-19 status of dentists in B&H, implementation of prescribed preventive measures, and usage of various kinds of PPE, at the beginning of the pandemics and now, 2.5 years later, including dentists' current vaccination status, and their opinions and attitudes toward the national COVID-19 economic impact on dental practice., Methodology: Study research was in a form of a cross-sectional longitudinally designed online survey and was conducted in two parts., Results and Conclusions: Dental professionals in B&H had a high frequency of COVID-19 symptoms in the second pandemic year. The vaccination status of dentists in B&H was in line with the global average values of vaccinated professionals. Dentists used patient management preventive measures and PPE recommended by WHO, but some preventive measures have been changed and prioritized recently. The economic impact of pandemics on dentistry was predominantly negative.

Growing demand for sustainable and green technologies has turned industries and research toward the more efficient utilization of natural and renewable resources. In an effort to tackle this issue, we developed an antibacterial textile nanocomposite material based on cotton and peat fibers with immobilized Cu-based nanostructures. In order to overcome poor wettability and affinity for Cu 2+ -ions, the substrate was activated by corona discharge and coated with the biopolymer chitosan before the in situ synthesis of nanostructures. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) images show that the application of gallic or ascorbic acid as green reducing agents resulted in the formation of Cu-based nanosheets and mostly spherical nanoparticles, respectively. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis revealed that the formed nanostructures consisted of Cu 2 O and CuO. A higher-concentration precursor solution led to higher copper content in the nanocomposites, independent of the reducing agent and chitosan deacetylation degree. Most of the synthesized nanocomposites provided maximum reduction of the bacteria Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus . A combined modification using chitosan with a higher deacetylation degree, a 1 mM solution of CuSO 4 solution, and gallic acid resulted in an optimal textile nanocomposite with strong antibacterial activity and moderate Cu 2+ -ion release in physiological solutions. Finally, the Cu-based nanostructures partially suppressed the biodegradation of the textile nanocomposite in soil.

Introduction: The impact of activated blood and endothelial cells on the thrombosis in myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN) has not yet been clarified. We prospectively analyzed correlation between circulating leukocyte-platelet aggregates and soluble selectins to thrombosis occurrence in MPN, in the context of standard and cardiovascular risk factors, and different clinical and biological characteristics., Methods: Flow cytometric analysis of neutrophil-platelet (Neu-Plt) and monocyte-platelet (Mo-Plt) aggregates in peripheral blood, as well as quantification of soluble E-/L-/P-selectins by enzyme immunoassay, was performed on 95 newly diagnosed MPN patients., Results: During the follow-up, thrombosis occurred in 12.6% MPN patients (arterial 9.4%, venous 3.2%), with a mean time of 39 months. The overall incidence rate of main thrombotic events was 4.36 per 100 patient-years. The incidence of arterial hypertension (HTA) was significantly higher in patients with thrombosis, compared to those without thrombosis (P < .05). The level of soluble P-selectin was significantly higher in patients with thrombosis compared to those without thrombosis (346.89 ng/mL vs 286.39 ng/mL, P = .034). The mean level of Neu-Plt (26.7% vs 22.4%) and Mo-Plt (17.8% vs 12.3%) aggregates did not differ significantly between the groups with and without thrombosis. A multivariate COX proportional hazard regression model confirmed an independent predictive significance of Mo-Plt aggregates (HR = 1.561, 95% CI: 1.007-2.420, P = .046), as well as the cumulative effect of Mo-Plt aggregates and HTA (HR = 1.975, 95%CI: 1.215-3.212, P = .006) for thrombosis occurrence., Conclusion: Monocyte-platelet aggregates represent an independent risk factor for thrombosis occurrence, further on supported by HTA., (© 2021 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.)

Gingiva-Derived Mesenchymal Stromal Cells (GMSCs) have been shown to play an important role in periodontitis. However, how P. gingivalis , one of the key etiological agents of the disease, affects healthy (H)- and periodontitis (P)-GMSCs is unknown. To address this problem, we established 10 H-GMSC and 12 P-GMSC lines. No significant differences in morphology, differentiation into chondroblasts and adipocytes, expression of characteristic MSCS markers, including pericyte antigens NG2 and PDGFR, were observed between H- and P-GMSC lines. However, proliferation, cell size and osteogenic potential were higher in P-GMSCs, in contrast to their lower ability to suppress mononuclear cell proliferation. P. gingivalis up-regulated the mRNA expression of IL-6, IL-8, MCP-1, GRO-α, RANTES, TLR-2, HIF-1α, OPG, MMP-3, SDF-1, HGF and IP-10 in P-GMSCs, whereas only IL-6, MCP-1 and GRO-α were up-regulated in H-GMSCs. The expression of MCP-1, RANTES, IP-10 and HGF was significantly higher in P-GMSCs compared to H-GMSCs, but IDO1 was lower. No significant changes in the expression of TLR-3, TLR-4, TGF-β, LAP, IGFBP4 and TIMP-1 were observed in both types of GMSCs. In conclusion, our results suggest that P-GMSCs retain their pro-inflammatory properties in culture, exhibit lower immunosuppressive potential than their healthy counterparts, and impaired regeneration-associated gene induction in culture. All these functions are potentiated significantly by P. gingivalis treatment.

Since the middle of the last century, marine organisms have been identified as producers of chemically and biologically diverse secondary metabolites which have exerted various biological activities including anticancer, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial, antifouling and others. This review primarily focuses on the marine phenolic compounds and their derivatives with potent anticancer activity, isolated and/or modified in the last decade. Reports on the elucidation of their structures as well as biosynthetic studies and total synthesis are also covered. Presented phenolic compounds inhibited cancer cells proliferation or migration, at sub-micromolar or nanomolar concentrations (lamellarins D ( 37 ), M ( 38 ), K ( 39 ), aspergiolide B ( 41 ), fradimycin B ( 62 ), makulavamine J ( 66 ), mayamycin ( 69 ), N-acetyl-N-demethylmayamycin ( 70 ) or norhierridin B ( 75 )). In addition, they exhibited anticancer properties by a diverse biological mechanism including induction of apoptosis or inhibition of cell migration and invasive potential. Finally, phlorotannins 1 - 7 and bromophenols 12 - 29 represent the most researched phenolic compounds, of which the former are recognized as protective agents against UVB or gamma radiation-induced skin damages. Finally, phenolic metabolites were assorted into six main classes: phlorotannins, bromophenols, flavonoids, coumarins, terpenophenolics, quinones and hydroquinones. The derivatives that could not be attributed to any of the above-mentioned classes were grouped in a separate class named miscellaneous compounds.

Chronic inflammation is characterized by the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), reactive nitrogen species, and inflammatory cytokines in myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs). In addition to these parameters, the aim of this study was to analyze the influence of ROS on the proliferation-related AKT/mTOR signaling pathway and the relationship with inflammatory factors in chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML). The activity of the antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, and catalase is reduced in erythrocytes while levels of the oxidative stress markers malondialdehyde and protein carbonyl are elevated in the plasma of patients with CML. In addition, nitrogen species (nitrotyrosine, iNOS, eNOS) and inflammation markers (IL-6, NFkB, and S100 protein) were increased in granulocytes of CML while anti-inflammatory levels of IL-10 were decreased in plasma. CML granulocytes exhibited greater resistance to cytotoxic H 2 O 2 activity compared to healthy subjects. Moreover, phosphorylation of the apoptotic p53 protein was reduced while the activity of the AKT/mTOR signaling pathway was increased, which was further enhanced by oxidative stress (H 2 O 2 ) in granulocytes and erythroleukemic K562 cells. IL-6 caused oxidative stress and DNA damage that was mitigated using antioxidant or inhibition of inflammatory NFkB transcription factor in K562 cells. We demonstrated the presence of oxidative and nitrosative stress in CML, with the former mediated by AKT/mTOR signaling and stimulated by inflammation.

Neutrophils are an essential component of the innate immune response, but their prolonged activation can lead to chronic inflammation. Consequently, neutrophil homeostasis is tightly regulated through balance between granulopoiesis and clearance of dying cells. The bone marrow is both a site of neutrophil production and the place they return to and die. Myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN) are clonal hematopoietic disorders characterized by the mutations in three types of molecular markers, with emphasis on Janus kinase 2 gene mutation ( JAK2V617F ). The MPN bone marrow stem cell niche is a site of chronic inflammation, with commonly increased cells of myeloid lineage, including neutrophils. The MPN neutrophils are characterized by the upregulation of JAK target genes. Additionally, MPN neutrophils display malignant nature, they are in a state of activation, and with deregulated apoptotic machinery. In other words, neutrophils deserve to be placed in the midst of major events in MPN. Our crucial interest in this review is better understanding of how neutrophils die in MPN mirrored by defects in apoptosis and to what possible extent they can contribute to MPN pathophysiology. We tend to expect that reduced neutrophil apoptosis will establish a pathogenic link to chronic inflammation in MPN.

Biocompatibility of materials is one of the most important conditions for their successful application in tissue regeneration and repair. Cell-surface interactions stimulate adhesion and activation of macrophages whose acquaintance can assist in designing novel biomaterials that promote favorable macrophage-biomaterial surface interactions for clinical application. This study is designed to determine the distribution and number of macrophages as a means of biocompatibility evaluation of two newly synthesized materials [silver/poly(vinyl alcohol) (Ag/PVA) and silver/poly(vinyl alcohol)/graphene (Ag/PVA/Gr) nanocomposite hydrogels] in vivo , with approval of the Ethics Committee of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Belgrade. Macrophages and giant cells were analyzed in tissue sections stained by routine H&E and immunohistochemical methods (CD68 + ). Statistical relevance was determined in the statistical software package SPSS 20 (IBM corp). The results of the study in terms of the number of giant cells localized around the implant showed that their number was highest on the seventh postoperative day (p.o.d.) in the group implanted with Ag/PVA hydrogels, and on the 30th p.o.d. in the group implanted with Ag/PVA/Gr. Interestingly, the number of macrophages measured in the capsular and pericapsular space was highest in the group implanted with the commercial Suprasorb © material. The increased macrophage number, registered around the Ag/PVA/Gr implant on 60th p.o.d. indicates that the addition of graphene can, in a specific way, modulate different biological responses of tissues in the process of wound healing, regeneration, and integration.

A key feature of sequential decision making under uncertainty is a need to balance between exploiting-choosing the best action according to the current knowledge, and exploring-obtaining information about values of other actions. The multi-armed bandit problem, a classical task that captures this trade-off, served as a vehicle in machine learning for developing bandit algorithms that proved to be useful in numerous industrial applications. The active inference framework, an approach to sequential decision making recently developed in neuroscience for understanding human and animal behaviour, is distinguished by its sophisticated strategy for resolving the exploration-exploitation trade-off. This makes active inference an exciting alternative to already established bandit algorithms. Here we derive an efficient and scalable approximate active inference algorithm and compare it to two state-of-the-art bandit algorithms: Bayesian upper confidence bound and optimistic Thompson sampling. This comparison is done on two types of bandit problems: a stationary and a dynamic switching bandit. Our empirical evaluation shows that the active inference algorithm does not produce efficient long-term behaviour in stationary bandits. However, in the more challenging switching bandit problem active inference performs substantially better than the two state-of-the-art bandit algorithms. Due to sedentary lifestyle and harsh environmental conditions, gorgonian coral extracts are recognized as a rich source of novel compounds with various biological activities, of interest to the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries. The presented study aimed to perform chemical screening of organic extracts and semi-purified fractions obtained from the common Adriatic gorgonian, sea fan, Eunicella cavolini (Koch, 1887) and explore its abilities to exert different biological effects in vitro. Qualitative chemical evaluation revealed the presence of several classes of secondary metabolites extended with mass spectrometry analysis and tentative dereplication by using Global Natural Product Social Molecular Networking online platform (GNPS). Furthermore, fractions F4 and F3 showed the highest phenolic (3.28 ± 0.04 mg GAE/g sample) and carotene (23.11 ± 2.48 mg β-CA/g sample) content, respectively. The fraction F3 inhibited 50% of DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl-hydrate) and ABTS (2,2'-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzthiazolin-6-yl) sulfonic acid) radicals at the concentrations of 767.09 ± 11.57 and 157.16 ± 10.83 µg/mL, respectively. The highest anti-inflammatory potential was exhibited by F2 (IC 50 = 198.70 ± 28.77 µg/mL) regarding the inhibition of albumin denaturation and F1 (IC 50 = 254.49 ± 49.17 µg/mL) in terms of soybean lipoxygenase inhibition. In addition, the most pronounced antiproliferative effects were observed for all samples (IC 50 ranging from 0.82 ± 0.14-231.18 ± 46.13 µg/mL) against several carcinoma cell lines, but also towards non-transformed human fibroblasts pointing to a generally cytotoxic effect. In addition, the antibacterial activity was tested by broth microdilution assay against three human pathogenic bacteria: Escherichia coli , Pseudomonas aeruginosa , and Staphylococcus aureus . The latter was the most affected by fractions F2 and F3 . Finally, further purification, isolation and characterization of pure compounds from the most active fractions are under investigation.

Flow cytometry (FC) analysis of erythrocyte shape and related biomechanical properties, such as osmotic fragility, have not moved from a research tool to regular clinical testing. The main reason is existing evidence that various pre-analytical factors influence the mathematical interpretation of the data obtained. With an aim to contribute to the standardization and broaden the use of FC for human erythrocyte shape assessment, freshly prepared peripheral blood erythrocytes isolated from healthy donors were incubated in iso and hypo-osmotic solutions (pure saline, saline with potassium and calcium, and phosphate buffered saline) and examined by FC using values of forward scatter (FSC) and side scatter (SSC). Kurtosis, skewness, Pearson's second skewness coefficient of dissymmetry (PCD), and spherical index, calculated from FSC distributions, were used for the erythrocyte shape evaluation. In all isotonic media FSC distribution and FSC-based morphology parameters showed huge inter-individual and inter-medium variation. With decreasing osmolality, in all media and samples, the size of the erythrocytes increased, and swelling index and kurtosis decreased. However, changes in skewness and PCD were influenced by the medium used and the sample tested. Compared to FSC, SSC signal in isotonic and its change in hypotonic media showed lower inter-individual variation and was not influenced by the type of medium. We propose a spherical index and kurtosis as FSC-based indicators of erythrocyte shape. As more resistant to the influence of the preanalytical treatment, SSC data appeared to be unfairly neglected for the assessment of erythrocyte shape, in comparison to the usually employed FSC data., (© 2021. In order to determine whether conserved tick salivary protein AV422 is immunogenic, the goal of our study was to detect specific IgG response within at-risk populations. Study groups included 76 individuals, differing in occurrence of recently recorded tick bites and health status. Western blotting with recombinant (r) protein derived from Ixodes ricinus (Ir) was performed. IgG response to Borrelia/Rickettsia, as indicators of previous tick infestations, was also assessed. Additionally, a detailed in silico AV422 protein sequence analysis was performed, followed by modelling of the interactions between peptides and corresponding MHC II molecules by molecular docking. Anti-rIrAV422 seroprevalences among individuals exposed to ticks were high (62.5, 57.9 and 66.7%) and anti-Borrelia/Rickettsia seroprevalences were 54.2, 15.8 and 44.4% among individuals with/without recent tick bite and patients suspected of tick-borne disease, respectively. In silico analysis of AV422 protein sequence showed a high level of conservation across tick genera, including also the predicted antigenic determinants specific for T and B cells. Docking to the restricted MHC II molecules was performed for all predicted AV422 T cell epitopes, and the most potent (highly immunogenic) epitope determinants were suggested. The epitope prediction reveals that tick salivary protein AV422 may elicit humoral immune response in humans, which is consistent with the high anti-rIrAV422 seroprevalence in tested at-risk subjects. Aim: The objective was to formulate and characterize the nanoemulsion based on Cymbopogon citratus oil, intended for use in infected teeth root canal therapy. The investigation of the antioxidant and antibiofilm potential toward Enterococcus faecalis was aimed as well. Materials & methods: Characterization of oil (by GC/MS analysis) and nanoemulsion (by dynamic light scattering instrument), and determination of antibacterial (by microdilution assay), antibiofilm (by crystal violet assay) and antioxidant properties (by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl-hydrate and thiobarbituric acid assay methods) were provided. Antibiofilm efficacy of irrigation procedure including nanoemulsion was screened on extracted teeth (by CFU-counting assay). Results: Notable antibacterial and antibiofilm activity, both against forming and preformed biofilms of oil, was observed. Irrigation involved nanoemulsion showed remarkable antibiofilm potential. Both substances induced some antioxidant activity. Conclusion: Results encourage further research with the aim of application of the nanoemulsion in dental practice.

The appearance of pest insects can lead to a loss in yield if farmers do not respond in a timely manner to suppress their spread. Occurrences and numbers of insects can be monitored through insect traps, which include their permanent touring and checking of their condition. Another more efficient way is to set up sensor devices with a camera at the traps that will photograph the traps and forward the images to the Internet, where the pest insect's appearance will be predicted by image analysis. Weather conditions, temperature and relative humidity are the parameters that affect the appearance of some pests, such as Helicoverpa armigera . This paper presents a model of machine learning that can predict the appearance of insects during a season on a daily basis, taking into account the air temperature and relative humidity. Several machine learning algorithms for classification were applied and their accuracy for the prediction of insect occurrence was presented (up to 76.5%). Since the data used for testing were given in chronological order according to the days when the measurement was performed, the existing model was expanded to take into account the periods of three and five days. The extended method showed better accuracy of prediction and a lower percentage of false detections. In the case of a period of five days, the accuracy of the affected detections was 86.3%, while the percentage of false detections was 11%. The proposed model of machine learning can help farmers to detect the occurrence of pests and save the time and resources needed to check the fields.

A 1,3-dihexadecyl-1 H -benzo[ d ]imidazol-3-ium-tetraphenylborate (DHBI-TPB) ion-pair implemented in DHBI-TPB surfactant sensor was used for the potentiometric quantification of anionic surfactants in detergents and commercial household care products. The DHBI-TPB ion-pair was characterized by FTIR spectroscopy and computational analysis which revealed a crucial contribution of the C-H∙∙∙π contacts for the optimal complex formation. The DHBI-TPB sensor potentiometric response showed excellent analytical properties and Nernstian slope for SDS (60.1 mV/decade) with LOD 3.2 × 10 -7 M; and DBS (58.4 mV/decade) with LOD 6.1 × 10 -7 M was obtained. The sensor possesses exceptional resistance to different organic and inorganic interferences in broad pH (2-10) range. DMIC used as a titrant demonstrated superior analytical performances for potentiometric titrations of SDS, compared to other tested cationic surfactants (DMIC > CTAB > CPC > Hyamine 1622). The combination of DHBI-TPB sensor and DMIC was successfully employed to perform titrations of the highly soluble alkane sulfonate homologues. Nonionic surfactants (increased concentration and number of EO groups) had a negative impact on anionic surfactant titration curves and a signal change. The DHBI-TPB sensor was effectively employed for the determination of technical grade anionic surfactants presenting the recoveries from 99.5 to 101.3%. The sensor was applied on twelve powered samples as well as liquid-gel and handwashing home care detergents containing anionic surfactants. The obtained results showed good agreement compared to the outcomes measured by ISE surfactant sensor and a two-phase titration method. The developed DHBI-TPB surfactant sensor could be used for quality control in industry and has great potential in environmental monitoring.

Cognitive control is typically understood as a set of mechanisms that enable humans to reach goals that require integrating the consequences of actions over longer time scales. Importantly, using routine behaviour or making choices beneficial only at short time scales would prevent one from attaining these goals. During the past two decades, researchers have proposed various computational cognitive models that successfully account for behaviour related to cognitive control in a wide range of laboratory tasks. As humans operate in a dynamic and uncertain environment, making elaborate plans and integrating experience over multiple time scales is computationally expensive. Importantly, it remains poorly understood how uncertain consequences at different time scales are integrated into adaptive decisions. Here, we pursue the idea that cognitive control can be cast as active inference over a hierarchy of time scales, where inference, i.e., planning, at higher levels of the hierarchy controls inference at lower levels. We introduce the novel concept of meta-control states, which link higher-level beliefs with lower-level policy inference. Specifically, we conceptualize cognitive control as inference over these meta-control states, where solutions to cognitive control dilemmas emerge through surprisal minimisation at different hierarchy levels. We illustrate this concept using the exploration-exploitation dilemma based on a variant of a restless multi-armed bandit task. We demonstrate that beliefs about contexts and meta-control states at a higher level dynamically modulate the balance of exploration and exploitation at the lower level of a single action. Finally, we discuss the generalisation of this meta-control concept to other control dilemmas.

Various imaging and electrophysiological studies in a number of different species and brain regions have revealed that neuronal dynamics associated with diverse behavioral patterns and cognitive tasks take on a sequence-like structure, even when encoding stationary concepts. These neuronal sequences are characterized by robust and reproducible spatiotemporal activation patterns. This suggests that the role of neuronal sequences may be much more fundamental for brain function than is commonly believed. Furthermore, the idea that the brain is not simply a passive observer but an active predictor of its sensory input, is supported by an enormous amount of evidence in fields as diverse as human ethology and physiology, besides neuroscience. Hence, a central aspect of this review is to illustrate how neuronal sequences can be understood as critical for probabilistic predictive information processing, and what dynamical principles can be used as generators of neuronal sequences. Moreover, since different lines of evidence from neuroscience and computational modeling suggest that the brain is organized in a functional hierarchy of time scales, we will also review how models based on sequence-generating principles can be embedded in such a hierarchy, to form a generative model for recognition and prediction of sensory input. We shortly introduce the Bayesian brain hypothesis as a prominent mathematical description of how online, i.e., fast, recognition, and predictions may be computed by the brain. Finally, we briefly discuss some recent advances in machine learning, where spatiotemporally structured methods (akin to neuronal sequences) and hierarchical networks have independently been developed for a wide range of tasks. The distinct ways the COVID-19 pandemic has been unfolding in different countries and regions suggest that local societal and governmental structures play an important role not only for the baseline infection rate, but also for short and long-term reactions to the outbreak. We propose to investigate the question of how societies as a whole, and governments in particular, modulate the dynamics of a novel epidemic using a generalization of the SIR model, the reactive SIR (short-term and long-term reaction) model. We posit that containment measures are equivalent to a feedback between the status of the outbreak and the reproduction factor. Short-term reaction to an outbreak corresponds in this framework to the reaction of governments and individuals to daily cases and fatalities. The reaction to the cumulative number of cases or deaths, and not to daily numbers, is captured in contrast by long-term reaction. We present the exact phase space solution of the controlled SIR model and use it to quantify containment policies for a large number of countries in terms of short and long-term control parameters. We find increased contributions of long-term control for countries and regions in which the outbreak was suppressed substantially together with a strong correlation between the strength of societal and governmental policies and the time needed to contain COVID-19 outbreaks. Furthermore, for numerous countries and regions we identified a predictive relation between the number of fatalities within a fixed period before and after the peak of daily fatality counts, which allows to gauge the cumulative medical load of COVID-19 outbreaks that should be expected after the peak. These results suggest that the proposed model is applicable not only for understanding the outbreak dynamics, but also for predicting future cases and fatalities once the effectiveness of outbreak suppression policies is established with sufficient certainty.
