This study explores the associations between gifted children's stress management and parental stress level. A sample of 78 primary school children and their 76 parents took part in this study. Children were screened for intelligence and emotional quotients, while parents were tested for stress levels. Results show that the more children are aware of their stress-management skills, the less parents are stressed out. Moreover, the intelligence quotient is not significant in mediating this association, supporting the idea that it is not an a priori protective factor from a developmental perspective. The study findings suggest that when a child is equipped with the skills to handle stress by harnessing their emotional intelligence, it can have a beneficial effect on the entire family's well-being. Given that these skills can be developed, and the significant positive influence they have on a child's growth and adaptation, it is essential to offer specialized educational programs to gifted children. These programs should aim to enhance their emotional skills, which, in turn, can indirectly bolster the psychological health of the family unit as a whole.

Introduction: Although gifted children can express high cognitive skills, they can also show socioemotional difficulties. Drawing from Olson's circumplex model, the present paper assessed the role of family functioning in internalizing and externalizing problems in gifted children., Materials and Methods: 362 mothers and their 362 gifted children were included. The unbalanced subscales of the FACES IV-disengagement, enmeshment, rigidity, and chaos-and the CBCL were administered to mothers. The children completed the WISC-IV., Results: The model predicting internalizing problems was significant and explained 5.6% of the variance. Only rigidity had an independent and positive effect on internalizing problems in gifted children over and above sociodemographic variables and QI, whereas disengagement, enmeshment, and chaos were not associated with internalizing problems. The model predicting externalizing problems was significant and explained 10% of the variance. Again, rigidity was the only variable that had an independent and positive effect on externalizing problems in gifted children over and above sociodemographic variables and QI, whereas disengagement, enmeshment, and chaos were not associated with externalizing problems in this population., Discussion: Rigid families with a low ability to change in conditions that require readjustment appear to increase the risk of both internalizing and externalizing problems in gifted children. Although further studies are needed to support these preliminary findings, parental support interventions aimed at increasing flexibility appear to be useful.

Despite the availability of an effective vaccination, chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is still a major health concern worldwide. Chronic HBV infection can lead to fibrosis accumulation and overtime to cirrhosis, the principal risk factor for liver failure and hepatocellular carcinoma development. Liver biopsy is still considered the gold standard for fibrosis assessment, even though it is invasive and not exempt of complications. Overtime, several non-invasive methods for the detection of liver fibrosis have been developed and gradually introduced into clinical practice. However, their main limitation is the poor performance for the detection of intermediate stages of fibrosis. Finally, novel serological biomarkers, polygenic risk scores and imaging methods have been proposed in last years as novel promising tools to correctly identify the degree of liver fibrosis and to monitor liver disease progression. In this narrative review, we provide an overview on the novel non-invasive approaches for the evaluation of liver fibrosis and risk stratification of patients with chronic hepatitis B.

The advent of direct antiviral agents (DAAs) has radically changed the natural history of hepatitis C virus (HCV) chronic liver disease. Even patients with cirrhosis may display improvements in liver function or features of portal hypertension following viral eradication. The aim of this study was to assess whether a HCV cure would lead to improvements in cirrhotic patients using simple, readily available tools in clinical practice, together with liver stiffness (LS) measurement. This is a retrospective study of cirrhotic patients with cured HCV infection, with or without previous decompensation. Clinical and biochemical parameters as well as LS measurements were collected before antiviral treatment with DAAs and after 6 months following sustained virological response. Hepatic synthesis was assessed by serum albumin levels. Portal hypertension was indirectly assessed by platelet count. Liver function was determined by the CHILD score. A total of 373 cirrhotic patients with successful HCV eradication were retrospectively included. After 6 months of follow-up, a significantly higher proportion of patients showed improved liver function, shifting from the CHILD B/C to CHILD A group, (71.4%, p < 0.001). Similarly, LS improved from a median of 19.3 kPa (14.7−27) at the baseline vs. a median of 11.6 (7.7−16.8 kPa) at follow-up (p < 0.001). The proportion of patients who showed improved hepatic synthesis was 66.0%, which was statistically different when compared to that of patients who had a worsened condition (0.3%) (p < 0.001). Moreover, when classifying the cohort according to the RESIST-HCV score, we found that a significant proportion of patients shifted into the “low risk” group following DAA treatment (52% baseline vs. 45.6% at follow-up, p = 0.004). Even in the decompensated patients, LS improved from 1.6 to 2-fold from the baseline. Antiviral treatment is effective in improving indirect signs of hepatic synthesis and portal hypertension. Similarly, the LS values displayed significant improvements, even in decompensated patients.

Our proper acceleration with respect to the cosmic microwave background results in a real-time change of the angular position of distant extragalactic sources. The cosmological component of this aberration drift signal, the noninertial motion generated by the large-scale distribution of matter, can, in principle, be detected by future high-precision astrometric experiments. It will provide interesting consistency tests of the standard model of cosmology, set independent constraints on the amplitude of the Hubble constant and the linear growth rate of cosmic structures, and be instrumental in searching for evidence of new physics beyond the standard model. We present the formalism of this novel cosmological test, discuss the physics to which it is sensitive, and show simulated forecasts of the accuracy with which it can be implemented.

Observations indicate that the expansion of the Universe is accelerating, which is attributed to a ‘dark energy’ component that opposes gravity. There is a purely geometric test of the expansion of the Universe (the Alcock–Paczynski test), which would provide an independent way of investigating the abundance (Ω(X)) and equation of state (W(X)) of dark energy. It is based on an analysis of the geometrical distortions expected from comparing the real-space and redshift-space shape of distant cosmic structures, but it has proved difficult to implement. Here we report an analysis of the symmetry properties of distant pairs of galaxies from archival data. This allows us to determine that the Universe is flat. By alternately fixing its spatial geometry at Ω(k)≡0 and the dark energy equation-of-state parameter at W(X)≡-1, and using the results of baryon acoustic oscillations, we can establish at the 68.3% confidence level that and -0.85>W(X)>-1.12 and 0.60<Ω(X)<0.80.

Observations of distant supernovae indicate that the Universe is now in a phase of accelerated expansion the physical cause of which is a mystery. Formally, this requires the inclusion of a term acting as a negative pressure in the equations of cosmic expansion, accounting for about 75 per cent of the total energy density in the Universe. The simplest option for this 'dark energy' corresponds to a 'cosmological constant', perhaps related to the quantum vacuum energy. Physically viable alternatives invoke either the presence of a scalar field with an evolving equation of state, or extensions of general relativity involving higher-order curvature terms or extra dimensions. Although they produce similar expansion rates, different models predict measurable differences in the growth rate of large-scale structure with cosmic time. A fingerprint of this growth is provided by coherent galaxy motions, which introduce a radial anisotropy in the clustering pattern reconstructed by galaxy redshift surveys. Here we report a measurement of this effect at a redshift of 0.8. Using a new survey of more than 10,000 faint galaxies, we measure the anisotropy parameter beta = 0.70 +/- 0.26, which corresponds to a growth rate of structure at that time of f = 0.91 +/- 0.36. This is consistent with the standard cosmological-constant model with low matter density and flat geometry, although the error bars are still too large to distinguish among alternative origins for the accelerated expansion. The correct origin could be determined with a further factor-of-ten increase in the sampled volume at similar redshift.

To understand the evolution of galaxies, we need to know as accurately as possible how many galaxies were present in the Universe at different epochs. Galaxies in the young Universe have hitherto mainly been identified using their expected optical colours, but this leaves open the possibility that a significant population remains undetected because their colours are the result of a complex mix of stars, gas, dust or active galactic nuclei. Here we report the results of a flux-limited I-band survey of galaxies at look-back times of 9 to 12 billion years. We find 970 galaxies with spectroscopic redshifts between 1.4 and 5. This population is 1.6 to 6.2 times larger than previous estimates, with the difference increasing towards brighter magnitudes. Strong ultraviolet continua (in the rest frame of the galaxies) indicate vigorous star formation rates of more than 10-100 solar masses per year. As a consequence, the cosmic star formation rate representing the volume-averaged production of stars is higher than previously measured at redshifts of 3 to 4.

We propose a phenomenological model where the gravitational interaction between dark matter and baryons is suppressed on small, subgalactic scales. We describe the gravitational force by adding a Yukawa contribution to the standard Newtonian potential and show that this interaction scheme is effectively suggested by the available observations of the inner rotation curves of small mass galaxies. Besides helping in interpreting the cuspy profile of dark matter halos observed in N-body simulations, this potential regulates the quantity of baryons within halos of different masses.

Tricuspid regurgitation (TR) is detected by Doppler echocardiography in a high proportion of patients with right ventricle pressure or volume overload. Continuous wave Doppler (CW) provides a noninvasive estimation of the transtricuspid systolic pressure gradient, applying the modified Bernoulli formula to the maximum velocity of the TR jet. The purpose of this study was to test the accuracy of the CW prediction of systolic right ventricular pressure (RVPs), obtained adding a clinical estimate of the mean right atrial pressure (RAPm) to the Doppler derived pressure gradient. The study population consisted of 22 adult patients with Doppler proved TR, undergoing right heart catheterization (cath) for mitral valve disease (12 pts), atrial septal defect (8 pts), dilated cardiomyopathy (1 pt) or pulmonary hypertension (1 pt). Two studies were duplicated after nifedipine administration. TR was graded by pulsed Doppler flow mapping as mild in 7, moderate in 11, severe in 4 pts. RAPm was estimated clinically from the inspection of neck veins pulsatility (mmHg = pulsatility cm+5/1.3). At CATH RVPs ranged from 27 to 80 (46 +/- 17) mmHg, RAPm from 0 to 13 (6 +/- 3) mmHg. RVPs Doppler prediction showed a close correlation with CATH (r .97, SEE 4.2 mmHg), with a slight mean underestimation (-2 +/- 4 mmHg) (Fig. 3, Tab. I). The discrepancies between CW and CATH ranged from -9 to +10 mmHg, almost entirely due to inaccuracy of the RAPm clinical estimate (r .48, see 3.8 mmHg) (Fig. 4, Tab.
