Background: Pyro-electrohydrodynamic jetting (p-jet) has emerged recently as a promising technique for biosensing applications, through the concentration of highly diluted biomolecules in fluorescent spots at microscale. However, a great challenge still remains in optimizing the binding strategy for the sensing interface, enabling the detection of low abundance proteins through immunofluorescence protocols. Indeed, the surface of reaction can be functionalized with different chemical groups able to bind the target molecule with a strong interaction, prior to the p-jet spots decreasing the possibility to lose sensitivity after the common rinsing steps., Results: Here, we characterize the immobilization of a model protein, specifically the bovine serum albumin (BSA), in the concentrated p-jet spots to demonstrate the reliability of the technique for highly sensitive immunodetection assays. We first performed spectroscopic measurements on BSA deposited through pipette spots at relatively high concentrations and we achieved a higher efficiency in case of the covalent bond by using the carbonate buffer and the epoxy-based slides. We then tested the covalent setting in case of the p-jet spots with highly diluted samples of pre-labelled BSA. A significant concentration-dependent behavior of the signal was obtained down to picogram levels. Finally, an immunofluorescent protocol was settled with the p-jet spots and a Limit of the Detection (LOD) of 0. 27 pg/mL was reached., Significance: The demonstration here that the p-jet spots are compatible with immunodetection procedures and provide a LOD down to 0.27 pg/mL, launches the p-jet technique towards the development in future of a point-of-care (POC) diagnostic tool. This would become a major force in analytical chemical laboratories. The relationship between lung cancer surgery and venous thromboembolism (VTE) in Japan has not been elucidated. This was a post hoc analysis of the Cancer-VTE Registry. The 1057 patients who underwent surgery for lung cancer were divided into the surgery alone (SA) group (n = 598) and the surgery plus chemotherapy (SC) group (n = 459), and the 1-year incidences of VTE and cerebral ischemia were analyzed. In the SA and SC groups, composite VTE was observed in one (0.2%) and 15 (3.3%) patients, respectively, and cerebral ischemia was observed in eight (1.3%) and four (0.9%) patients, respectively. Lymph node metastasis was more common in patients with D-dimer >1.2 μg/ml (odds ratio: 1.781, P = .004). SA had a low risk of VTE but a high risk of cerebral ischemia. Typha angustifolia L. (TA) pollen has been utilized as a traditional Chinese medicine for treating various internal and external traumas. Moreover, bioactive compounds possess diverse pharmacological activities. This study aims to evaluate the antiviral properties of TA based on its ability to generate bioenergy, capable of inhibiting viruses. TA pollens were extracted using water and ethanol solvents. These extracts were utilized to identify the phytochemical contents and correlate with the antioxidant activity via 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assays. HPLC analysis was conducted to identify its electron-shuttling compositions. The bioenergy-generating characteristics were determined via microbial fuel cells. The water extract (TA-W) showed higher antioxidant activity due to a higher phenolic and flavonoid content compared to the ethanol extract (TA-E). Quercetin-3- O -(2 G -α-L-rhamnosyl)-rutinoside, quercetin-3- O -neohesperidoside, and quercetin are the electron shuttles (ES) identified out of the 11 compounds. TA obtained a 1.39 ± 0.10 amplification factor of power generation that indicates potential bioenergy-generating and associated antiviral characteristic properties. The findings may provide a foundation for developing antiviral medications specifically designed to target virus-related diseases, while minimizing the risk of drug toxicity and reducing the costs of drug development.

Background: Traumatic injuries, defined as physical injuries with sudden onset, are a major cause of distress and disability, with far-reaching societal consequences. A significant proportion of trauma survivors report persistent symptoms and difficulties after the injury, and studies show unmet health care needs. Self-management programs delivered in the sub-acute phase after traumatic injuries are scarcely evaluated. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the effectiveness of a self-management program (SEMPO), delivered 3-4 months after moderate-to-severe traumatic injury., Methods: This study protocol describes a pragmatic randomized controlled trial (RCT) with two classical RCT arms (intervention and control) and an explorative self-selection arm. 220 patients will be recruited from Oslo University Hospital, the largest Trauma Referral Centre in Norway. Patients aged 18-72 years residing in the south-east region of Norway, admitted to the Trauma Centre directly or within 72 h after having sustained a moderate to severe traumatic injury, defined as a New Injury Severity Score > 9, having at least 2 days hospital stay, and reporting injury-related symptoms and impairment at discharge from the acute hospital will be included. Patients will be randomly assigned to either a classical RCT randomization arm (intervention or control arm) or to a self-selection arm. In the randomization arm, participants are further randomized into intervention or control group. Participants allocated to the self-selection arm will choose to partake either in the intervention or control arm. The primary outcome is the level of self-efficacy in trauma coping assessed 6 months after completion of the intervention, with a similar time point for the control group. Secondary outcomes include symptom burden, physical functioning and disability, return to work and health care utilization, health-related quality of life, and communication competency. In addition, patients will be asked to nominate one domain-related measurement as their preferred outcome measure., Discussion: This RCT will determine the effect of a self-management program tailored to patients with moderate to severe physical trauma, and the self-selection arm incorporates the potential influence of patient treatment preferences on intervention results. In quadrupeds, such as cats, cutaneous afferents from the forepaw dorsum signal external perturbations and send inputs to spinal circuits to co-ordinate the activity in muscles of all four limbs. How these cutaneous reflex pathways from forelimb afferents are reorganized after an incomplete spinal cord injury is not clear. Using a staggered thoracic lateral hemisections paradigm, we investigated changes in intralimb and interlimb reflex pathways by electrically stimulating the left and right superficial radial nerves in seven adult cats and recording reflex responses in five forelimb and ten hindlimb muscles. After the first (right T5-T6) and second (left T10-T11) hemisections, forelimb-hindlimb co-ordination was altered and weakened. After the second hemisection, cats required balance assistance to perform quadrupedal locomotion. Short-, mid- and long-latency homonymous and crossed reflex responses in forelimb muscles and their phase modulation remained largely unaffected after staggered hemisections. The occurrence of homolateral and diagonal mid- and long-latency responses in hindlimb muscles evoked with left and right superficial radial nerve stimulation was significantly reduced at the first time point after the first hemisection, but partially recovered at the second time point with left superficial radial nerve stimulation. These responses were lost or reduced after the second hemisection. When present, all reflex responses, including homolateral and diagonal, maintained their phase-dependent modulation. Therefore, our results show a considerable loss in cutaneous reflex transmission from cervical to lumbar levels after incomplete spinal cord injury, albeit with preservation of phase modulation, probably affecting functional responses to external perturbations. Thoracic spinal cord injury disrupts communication between spinal locomotor centres located at cervical and lumbar levels, impairing balance and limb co-ordination. We investigated cutaneous reflexes from forelimb afferents during quadrupedal locomotion by electrically stimulating the superficial radial nerve bilaterally, before and after staggered lateral thoracic hemisections in cats. We showed a loss/reduction of mid- and long-latency homolateral and diagonal reflex responses in hindlimb muscles early after the first hemisection that partially recovered with left superficial radial nerve stimulation, before being reduced after the second hemisection. Here we demonstrate for the first time that an antibody-gold nanoparticles (AuNPs)-polymer conjugate thin-film biosensor can easily be fabricated to selectively capture Tau protein. Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are employed as sensing elements, thus capitalizing on their propensity to undergo assembly or disassembly in response to the adsorption or conjugation of various biomolecules on their surface, thereby forming robust interactions with the target analyte. We show that the Tau protein in its different aggregation phases can be detected, by restricting the reaction area on the solid thin polymer film and thus reducing the diffusion effects usually encountered in immunosensors. A limit of detection (LOD) of 460 pg/mL was reached, demonstrating a great potential for detecting Tau in aggregation states. Classification systems based on machine learning (ML) models, critical in predictive maintenance and fault diagnosis, are subject to an error rate that can pose significant risks, such as unnecessary downtime due to false alarms. Propagating the uncertainty of input data through the model can define confidence bands to determine whether an input is classifiable, preferring to indicate a result of unclassifiability rather than misclassification. This study presents an electrical fault diagnosis system on asynchronous motors using an artificial neural network (ANN) model trained with vibration measurements. It is shown how vibration analysis can be effectively employed to detect and locate motor malfunctions, helping reduce downtime, improve process control and lower maintenance costs. In addition, measurement uncertainty information is introduced to increase the reliability of the diagnosis system, ensuring more accurate and preventive decisions.

Abstract: Patients with physical traumatic injuries frequently require long-term rehabilitation services. To strengthen rehabilitation services in the postacute phase, we need to assess characteristics of this population and their healthcare and rehabilitation needs in the community. This brief report summarizes the frequency of unmet rehabilitation needs in community-based rehabilitation during the first year after moderate and severe trauma. Additionally, the associations between sociodemographic, injury severity factors and unmet needs were examined. Data from a prospective multicenter cohort study of patients with moderate and severe trauma (New Injury Severity Score > 9) of all ages, discharged alive from two regional trauma centers in 2020 were used. Needs were estimated using the Needs and Provision Complexity Scale. Overall, 46% of patients had unmet needs at 12-mo postinjury, particularly related to the provision of rehabilitation services, specialist follow-ups, and social and family support. The probability of unmet needs was associated with age, preinjury comorbidities, and impaired functioning. Background: The aim of this paper was to evaluate the predictive role of the uterocervical angle (UCA) in spontaneous preterm birth (sPTB)., Methods: A systematic review of the literature was performed including all studies reporting the association between UCA and sPTB. Searches were performed with the use of a combination of keywords: "cervical length," "uterocervical angle," and "preterm birth" from inception of each database to March 2022. The statistical evaluations were carried out using the Comprehensive Meta-Analysis version 3 (Biostat Inc. USA)., Results: Sixteen studies all conducted on the second trimester UCA as well as its association with sPTB were included in this study. In all studies the measurements of cervical length (CL) and UCA were performer in the second trimester, except in one that in the third trimester. In most studies the CL is greater than 30 mm and the UCA is greater than 110 °. In seven studies women with symptoms were considered while in 8 studies the women were asymptomatic., Conclusions: It is too early for it to reach a firm conclusion on UCA utilization in clinical settings. A higher UCA measurement (greater than 150°) is an important risk factor for deliveries before 37 weeks' gestation. It provides a higher diagnostic performance in high risk patients than the CL measurement. However, the most relevant ultrasound parameter for the prediction of delivery within the next few data in women with preterm delivery remains the cervical length. There is a need to consider both markers and create protocols so that the values obtained with UCA and those with CL can make a real contribution to decisions to be made rather than using only CL.

Large-scale food fortification (LSFF) can increase dietary micronutrient intake and improve micronutrient status. Here we used food balance sheet data from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations to estimate current country-specific prevalences of inadequate zinc intake. We assessed the potential effects of improving existing LSFF programmes for cereal grains or implementing new programmes in 40 countries where zinc deficiency is a potential public health problem. Accounting for LSFF programmes as currently implemented, 15% of the global population (1.13 billion individuals) is estimated to have inadequate zinc intake. In countries where zinc deficiency is a potential public health problem, the implementation of high-quality mandatory LSFF programmes that include zinc as a fortificant would substantially increase the availability of zinc in the national food supply, reducing the estimated prevalence of inadequate zinc intake by up to 50% globally. It is largely documented that neurodegenerative diseases can be effectively treated only if early diagnosed. In this context, the structural changes of some biomolecules such as Tau, seem to play a key role in neurodegeneration mechanism becoming eligible targets for an early diagnosis. Post-translational modifications are responsible to drive the Tau protein towards a transition phase from a native disorder conformation into a preaggregation state, which then straight recruits the final fibrillization process. Here, we show for the first time the detection of pre-aggregated Tau in artificial urine at femto-molar level, through the concentration effect of the pyro-electrohydrodynamic jet (p-jet) technique. An excellent linear calibration curve is demonstrated at the femto-molar level with a limit of detection (LOD) of 130 fM. Moreover, for the first time we show here the structure stability of the protein after p-jet application through a deep spectroscopic investigation. During quadrupedal locomotion, interactions between spinal and supraspinal circuits and somatosensory feedback coordinate forelimb and hindlimb movements. How this is achieved is not clear. To determine whether forelimb movements modulate hindlimb cutaneous reflexes involved in responding to an external perturbation, we stimulated the superficial peroneal nerve in six intact cats during quadrupedal locomotion and during hindlimb-only locomotion (with forelimbs standing on stationary platform) and in two cats with a low spinal transection (T12-T13) during hindlimb-only locomotion. We compared cutaneous reflexes evoked in six ipsilateral and four contralateral hindlimb muscles. Results showed similar occurrence and phase-dependent modulation of short-latency inhibitory and excitatory responses during quadrupedal and hindlimb-only locomotion in intact cats. However, the depth of modulation was reduced in the ipsilateral semitendinosus during hindlimb-only locomotion. Additionally, longer-latency responses occurred less frequently in extensor muscles bilaterally during hindlimb-only locomotion, whereas short-latency inhibitory and longer-latency excitatory responses occurred more frequently in the ipsilateral and contralateral sartorius anterior, respectively. After spinal transection, short-latency inhibitory and excitatory responses were similar to both intact conditions, whereas mid- or longer-latency excitatory responses were reduced or abolished. Our results in intact cats and the comparison with spinal-transected cats suggest that the absence of forelimb movements suppresses inputs from supraspinal structures and/or cervical cord that normally contribute to longer-latency reflex responses in hindlimb extensor muscles. NEW & NOTEWORTHY During quadrupedal locomotion, the coordination of forelimb and hindlimb movements involves central circuits and somatosensory feedback. To demonstrate how forelimb movement affects hindlimb cutaneous reflexes during locomotion, we stimulated the superficial peroneal nerve in intact cats during quadrupedal and hindlimb-only locomotion as well as in spinal-transected cats during hindlimb-only locomotion. We show that forelimb movement influences the modulation of hindlimb cutaneous reflexes, particularly the occurrence of long-latency reflex responses.

Objective: To describe the needs for subacute inpatient rehabilitation and community-based healthcare services, rehabilitation, and social support in patients with moderate-to-severe traumatic injury in the first 6 months post-injury. Further, to explore associations between sociodemographic and clinical characteristics and unmet needs., Design: Multicentre prospective cohort study., Subjects: Of 601 persons (75% males), mean (standard deviation) age 47 (21) years, admitted to trauma centres in 2020 with moderate-to-severe injury, 501 patients responded at the 6-month follow-up and thus were included in the analyses., Methods: Sociodemographic and injury-related characteristics were recorded at inclusion. Estimation of needs was assessed with the Rehabilitation Complexity Scale Extended-Trauma and the Needs and Provision Complexity Scale on hospital discharge. Provision of services was recorded 6 months post-injury. Multivariable logistic regressions explored associations between baseline variables and unmet inpatient rehabilitation and community-based service needs., Results: In total, 20% exhibited unmet needs for subacute inpatient rehabilitation, compared with 60% for community-based services. Predictors for unmet community-based service needs included residing in less central areas, profound injury severity, severe head injury, and rehabilitation referral before returning home., Conclusion: Inadequate provision of healthcare and rehabilitation services, particularly in the municipalities, resulted in substantial unmet needs in the first 6 months following injury.

When the foot dorsum contacts an obstacle during locomotion, cutaneous afferents signal central circuits to coordinate muscle activity in the four limbs. Spinal cord injury disrupts these interactions, impairing balance and interlimb coordination. We evoked cutaneous reflexes by electrically stimulating left and right superficial peroneal nerves before and after two thoracic lateral hemisections placed on opposite sides of the cord at 9- to 13-week interval in seven adult cats (4 males and 3 females). We recorded reflex responses in ten hindlimb and five forelimb muscles bilaterally. After the first (right T5-T6) and second (left T10-T11) hemisections, coordination of the fore- and hindlimbs was altered and/or became less consistent. After the second hemisection, cats required balance assistance to perform quadrupedal locomotion. Short-latency reflex responses in homonymous and crossed hindlimb muscles largely remained unaffected after staggered hemisections. However, mid- and long-latency homonymous and crossed responses in both hindlimbs occurred less frequently after staggered hemisections. In forelimb muscles, homolateral and diagonal mid- and long-latency response occurrence significantly decreased after the first and second hemisections. In all four limbs, however, when present, short-, mid- and long-latency responses maintained their phase-dependent modulation. We also observed reduced durations of short-latency inhibitory homonymous responses in left hindlimb extensors early after the first hemisection and delayed short-latency responses in the right ipsilesional hindlimb after the first hemisection. Therefore, changes in cutaneous reflex responses correlated with impaired balance/stability and interlimb coordination during locomotion after spinal cord injury. Restoring reflex transmission could be used as a biomarker to facilitate locomotor recovery. The world is currently in the midst of a global food crisis brought about and exacerbated by a series of mutually reinforcing shocks to food systems This study investigated the resilience of food systems in six Asian countries (Bangladesh, Kyrgyz Republic, Lao PDR, Pakistan, Philippines, and Sri Lanka) amidst the global 'polycrisis' caused by COVID-19, geopolitical conflicts, and climate change. Trend analyses were performed for 19 indicators sourced from global databases and World Food Programme national data, representing the four domains of food system resilience: exposure to shocks; resilience capacities and agro- and food diversity, resilience responses and strategies; and long-term resilience outcomes. The analysis revealed that all six countries experienced the effects of the 'polycrisis', leading to diverse impacts on exchange rates, with Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and Lao PDR facing significant currency depreciation. While most countries increased crop production and decreased food imports during the crisis, government economic support during the pandemic varied widely. Resilience outcomes, including national food price inflation and the proportion of populations facing food insecurity, witnessed upward variations. Overall, countries with higher resilience capacities at the start of the 'polycrisis' showed less severe long-term resilience outcomes. Our findings highlight the varied challenges and resilience capacities across each country, influenced by a complex interplay of economic, political, agricultural, and food affordability factors crucial for determining long-term resilience in their food systems. Soil calcium carbonate (CaCO 3 ) impacts plant mineral nutrition far beyond Fe metabolism, imposing constraints for crop growth and quality in calcareous agrosystems. Our knowledge on plant strategies to tolerate CaCO 3 effects mainly refers to Fe acquisition. This review provides an update on plant cellular and molecular mechanisms recently described to counteract the negative effects of CaCO 3 in soils, as well as recent efforts to identify genetic bases involved in CaCO 3 tolerance from natural populations, that could be exploited to breed CaCO 3 -tolerant crops. Background: The D-dimer test is a simple test frequently used in routine clinical screening for venous thromboembolism (VTE). The Cancer-VTE Registry was a large-scale, multicenter, prospective, observational study in Japanese patients with cancer. This study aimed to clarify the relationship between D-dimer level at cancer diagnosis (baseline) and the incidence of events during cancer treatment (1-year follow-up period)., Methods: This was a post hoc sub-analysis of patients from the Cancer-VTE Registry whose D-dimer levels were measured at baseline. The incidence of events during the 1-year follow-up period was evaluated stratified by baseline D-dimer level. Adjusted hazard ratios for D-dimer level and events during the follow-up period were evaluated., Results: Among the total enrolled patients, baseline D-dimer level was measured in 9020 patients. The mean ± standard deviation baseline D-dimer level was 1.57 ± 3.94 µg/mL. During the follow-up period, the incidence of VTE, cerebral infarction/transient ischemic attack (TIA)/systemic embolic events (SEE), bleeding, and all-cause death increased with increasing baseline D-dimer level. The incidence of all-cause death increased with increasing D-dimer level regardless of cancer stage. The adjusted hazard ratio of all-cause death was 1.03 (95% confidence interval: 1.02-1.03) per 1.0-µg/mL increase in baseline D-dimer level., Conclusions: Increases in D-dimer levels were associated with a higher risk of thrombotic events, such as VTE and cerebral infarction/TIA/SEE, during cancer treatment. Background: Northern ecosystems are strongly influenced by herbivores that differ in their impacts on the ecosystem. Yet the role of herbivore diversity in shaping the structure and functioning of tundra ecosystems has been overlooked. With climate and land-use changes causing rapid shifts in Arctic species assemblages, a better understanding of the consequences of herbivore diversity changes for tundra ecosystem functioning is urgently needed. This systematic review synthesizes available evidence on the effects of herbivore diversity on different processes, functions, and properties of tundra ecosystems., Methods: Following a published protocol, our systematic review combined primary field studies retrieved from bibliographic databases, search engines and specialist websites that compared tundra ecosystem responses to different levels of vertebrate and invertebrate herbivore diversity. We used the number of functional groups of herbivores (i.e., functional group richness) as a measure of the diversity of the herbivore assemblage. We screened titles, abstracts, and full texts of studies using pre-defined eligibility criteria. We critically appraised the validity of the studies, tested the influence of different moderators, and conducted sensitivity analyses. Quantitative synthesis (i.e., calculation of effect sizes) was performed for ecosystem responses reported by at least five articles and meta-regressions including the effects of potential modifiers for those reported by at least 10 articles., Review Findings: The literature searches retrieved 5944 articles. After screening titles, abstracts, and full texts, 201 articles including 3713 studies (i.e., individual comparisons) were deemed relevant for the systematic review, with 2844 of these studies included in quantitative syntheses. The available evidence base on the effects of herbivore diversity on tundra ecosystems is concentrated around well-established research locations and focuses mainly on the impacts of vertebrate herbivores on vegetation. Overall, greater herbivore diversity led to increased abundance of feeding marks by herbivores and soil temperature, and to reduced total abundance of plants, graminoids, forbs, and litter, plant leaf size, plant height, and moss depth, but the effects of herbivore diversity were difficult to tease apart from those of excluding vertebrate herbivores. The effects of different functional groups of herbivores on graminoid and lichen abundance compensated each other, leading to no net effects when herbivore effects were combined. In turn, smaller herbivores and large-bodied herbivores only reduced plant height when occurring together but not when occurring separately. Greater herbivore diversity increased plant diversity in graminoid tundra but not in other habitat types., Conclusions: This systematic review underscores the importance of herbivore diversity in shaping the structure and function of Arctic ecosystems, with different functional groups of herbivores exerting additive or compensatory effects that can be modulated by environmental conditions. Still, many challenges remain to fully understand the complex impacts of herbivore diversity on tundra ecosystems. Future studies should explicitly address the role of herbivore diversity beyond presence-absence, targeting a broader range of ecosystem responses and explicitly including invertebrate herbivores. A better understanding of the role of herbivore diversity will enhance our ability to predict whether and where shifts in herbivore assemblages might mitigate or further amplify the impacts of environmental change on Arctic ecosystems., (© 2024. This research examined the effect of belief in feminist conspiracy theories and sexist ideology on endorsing rape myths. Study 1 ( N  = 201) uncovered that the relationship between feminist conspiracy beliefs and rape myth acceptance was conditional on higher levels of hostile sexism. Study 2 ( N  = 552) demonstrated that for those with higher hostile sexism, exposure to feminist conspiracy theories (vs. control) increased feminist conspiracy beliefs, which were then associated with rape myths. Background: Endoscopic resection is widely accepted as a local treatment for rectal neuroendocrine tumors sized ≤ 10 mm. However, there is no consensus on the best method for the endoscopic resection of rectal neuroendocrine tumors. As a simplified endoscopic procedure, endoscopic submucosal resection with a ligation device (ESMR-L) indicates a histologically complete resection rate comparable to that of endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD). We hypothesized that ESMR-L than ESD would be preferred for rectal neuroendocrine tumors. Hence, this trial aimed to verify whether ESMR-L is non-inferior to ESD in terms of histologically complete resection rate., Methods: This is a prospective, open-label, multicenter, non-inferiority, randomized controlled trial of two parallel groups, conducted at the Shizuoka Cancer Center and 31 other institutions in Japan. Patients with a lesion endoscopically diagnosed as a rectal neuroendocrine tumor ≤ 10 mm are eligible for inclusion. A total of 266 patients will be recruited and randomized to undergo either ESD or ESMR-L. The primary endpoint is the rate of en bloc resection with histologically tumor-free margins (R0 resection). Secondary endpoints include en bloc resection rate, procedure time, adverse events, hospitalization days, total devices and agents cost, adverse event rate between groups with and without resection site closure, outcomes between expert and non-expert endoscopists, and factors associated with R0 resection failure. The sample size is determined based on the assumption that the R0 resection rate will be 95.2% in the ESD group and 95.3% in the ESMR-L group, with a non-inferiority margin of 8%. With a one-sided significance level of 0.05 and a power of 80%, 226 participants are required. Assuming a dropout rate of 15%, 266 patients will be included in this study., Discussion: This is the first multicenter randomized controlled trial comparing ESD and ESMR-L for the R0 resection of rectal neuroendocrine tumors ≤ 10 mm. Background: Cognitive impairment, a core feature of schizophrenia, is associated with poor outcomes. Pharmacotherapy and psychosocial treatment, when used alone, have inadequate effect sizes for cognitive impairment, leading to recent interest in combination interventions. A previous study examined the additive effect of cognitive remediation on lurasidone in patients with schizophrenia, which was negative. Although improvement in cognitive function was suggested for lurasidone, it was inconclusive because there was no antipsychotic control in the study. To clarify whether lurasidone has a meaningful impact on cognitive function in combination with cognitive remediation, we use paliperidone as a control antipsychotic in this study. We hypothesize that combination with lurasidone will improve cognitive and social function to a greater extent than paliperidone., Methods: The valuable interaction with cognitive remediation and optimal antipsychotics for recovery in schizophrenia study is a multicenter, interventional, open-label, rater-blind, randomized comparison study, comparing the effect of lurasidone plus cognitive remediation with that of paliperidone plus cognitive remediation in patients with schizophrenia. The Neuropsychological Educational Approach to Remediation (NEAR) is used for cognitive remediation. Eligible patients will be randomized 1:1 to receive lurasidone or paliperidone combined with NEAR (6 weeks antipsychotic alone followed by 24 weeks combination antipsychotic plus NEAR). The primary endpoint is the change from baseline in the tablet-based Brief Assessment of Cognition in Schizophrenia composite T-score at the end of the NEAR combination treatment period. Secondary endpoints will include change from baseline in social function, schizophrenia symptoms, and quality of life at the end of the NEAR combination treatment period. Furthermore, change from baseline to the end of the pharmacotherapy period and change from the end of the pharmacotherapy period to the end of the NEAR combination treatment period will be assessed for all endpoints. The main goal of the present research is to develop and validate the Perceived Economic Inequality Scale (PEIS), an instrument measuring individuals' perceptions of economic inequality at the national level. The study was conducted on a representative sample of the Italian population ( N = 1,446, 51% women). The factorial structure of the scale was assessed through cross-validated exploratory-confirmatory factor analyses. To inspect the PEIS psychometric properties, item and correlation analyses were performed. The results showed that the PEIS is a valid and reliable unidimensional measure of perceived economic inequality at the national level. Further support of the PEIS construct validity was provided by the correlation of the scale score with the perceived wage gap and ideological beliefs like the economic system justification, social dominance orientation, meritocratic beliefs, and participants' political orientation. Crucially, multigroup confirmatory factor analysis supported configural, metric, and scalar invariances of the scale across socio-demographic groups. The PEIS allows researchers to assess the subjective component of economic inequality by also serving as a useful tool for unpacking the psychological correlates of perceived inequality.

In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, across six correlational studies in four different countries (total N = 4937), we examined the link between citizens' anger with and admiration for the government's actions and decisions (i.e., system-based anger and admiration) and engagement in preventive behaviour. The internal meta-analyses showed that individuals who admired the government's actions were more likely to adopt personal hygiene and social distancing behaviour. Yet, the link between emotions and preventive behaviour differed concerning the target of emotions, especially for anger. Specifically, anger about restrictions imposed by the government was negatively related to preventive behaviours, but this relationship was not significant when the target of anger was the government's overall handling of the pandemic. Aim: To provide a comprehensive and more representative national data on the disease, especially on treatment options and outcomes, and to determine access of retinoblastoma patients from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao to eye care, and determine if access is associated with delay in consultation, staging and outcomes., Methods: Cohort study of retinoblastoma patients seen in eleven institutions located in the three major areas of the Philippines namely Luzon, Vizayas and Mindanao from 2010-2020., Results: Totally 636 patients, involving 821 eyes, were included. Majority (57%) were from Luzon and were seen in institutions in Luzon (72%). Annually, 58±10 new cases were seen with 71% having unilateral disease. Median delay of consultation remained long at 9 (3, 17)mo, longest in patients with unilateral disease ( P <0.02) and those from the Visayas ( P <0.003). Based on the International Retinoblastoma Staging System, only 35% of patients had Stage 1 while 47% already had extraocular disease. Enucleation was the most common treatment received by 484 patients while intravenous chemotherapy was received by 469. There were 250 (39%) patients alive, 195 (31%) dead, 85 (13%) abandoned, 17 (3%) refused and 89 (14%) with no data., Conclusion: This study presents the largest cohort of retinoblastoma patients in the Philippines in terms of patients' and participating institutions' number and geographical location and type of institution (private and public). It also presents more comprehensive data on the treatments used and outcomes (survival, globe salvage, and vision retention rates). Delay in consultation was still long among patients leading to advanced disease stage and lower survival rate. Despite increasing capacity to diagnose and manage retinoblastoma in the country, the delay of consultation remains long primarily due to accessibility issues to eye care institutions especially in the Visayas and financial concerns. Background/aim: To investigate the effects of an exercise training program on physical and cognitive function in older patients with dementia., Patients and Methods: Thirty-eight patients with early-middle dementia (31 females and seven males), aged 80.6±6.9 years, residents in an Elderly Care Unit, either completed a 36-week structured exercise program (Intervention Group, IG; n=19), or received the usual medical care (Control Group, CG; n=19). Before and after the 36-week intervention, cognitive function was evaluated in both groups by Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and depression by Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS); physical function was assessed using handgrip test, Timed Up to Go (TUG), Berg Balance Scale (BBS) and Chair-Stand Test (CST), and daily living functionality by Functional Rating Scale for Symptoms of Dementia (FRSSD)., Results: As a result of exercise intervention, participants scored better in all functional and cognitive test assessments compared to the control group, as reflected by absolute and relative (%) differences in all metrics after the 36-week exercise program (p<0.001)., Conclusion: A 36-week supervised exercise training program was found to result in significant improvements in physical and cognitive function of elderly patients in early to middle stages of dementia at an Elderly Care Unit. Mammals walk in different directions, such as forward and backward. In human infants/adults and decerebrate cats, one leg can walk forward and the other backward simultaneously on a split-belt treadmill, termed hybrid or bidirectional locomotion. The purpose of the present study was to determine if spinal sensorimotor circuits generate hybrid locomotion and if so, how the limbs remain coordinated. We tested hybrid locomotion in 11 intact cats and in five following complete spinal thoracic transection (spinal cats) at three treadmill speeds with the hindlimbs moving forward, backward or bidirectionally. All intact cats generated hybrid locomotion with the forelimbs on a stationary platform. Four of five spinal cats generated hybrid locomotion, also with the forelimbs on a stationary platform, but required perineal stimulation. During hybrid locomotion, intact and spinal cats positioned their forward and backward moving hindlimbs caudal and rostral to the hip, respectively. The hindlimbs maintained consistent left-right out-of-phase alternation in the different stepping directions. Our results suggest that spinal locomotor networks generate hybrid locomotion by following certain rules at phase transitions. We also found that stance duration determined cycle duration in the different locomotor directions/conditions, consistent with a common rhythm-generating mechanism for different locomotor directions. Our findings provide additional insight on how left-right spinal networks and sensory feedback from the limbs interact to coordinate the hindlimbs and provide stability during locomotion in different directions. KEY POINTS: Terrestrial mammals can walk forward and backward, which is controlled in part by spinal sensorimotor circuits. Humans and cats also perform bidirectional or hybrid locomotion on a split-belt treadmill with one leg going forward and the other going backward. We show that cats with a spinal transection can perform hybrid locomotion and maintain left-right out-of-phase coordination, indicating that spinal sensorimotor circuits can perform simultaneous forward and backward locomotion. We also show that the regulation of cycle duration and phase duration is conserved across stepping direction, consistent with a common rhythm-generating mechanism for different stepping directions. Background: This substudy of the Cancer-VTE Registry estimated venous thromboembolism (VTE) incidence and risk factors in pancreatic cancer patients., Methods: The Cancer-VTE Registry was an observational study that collected VTE data from patients with solid tumors across Japan. We measured baseline VTE prevalence, and at 1-year follow-up, the cumulative incidence of symptomatic and composite VTE (symptomatic VTE and incidental VTE requiring treatment), bleeding, cerebral infarction/transient ischemic attack (TIA)/systemic embolic event (SEE), and all-cause death., Results: Of 1006 pancreatic cancer patients, 86 (8.5%) had VTE at baseline, and seven (0.7%) had symptomatic VTE. Significant risk factors of baseline VTE were Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status (ECOG PS) of 1, body mass index (BMI) ≥ 25 kg/m 2 , history of VTE, D-dimer > 1.2 µg/mL, and hemoglobin < 10 g/dL. At 1-year follow-up, the cumulative incidence of events was higher for pancreatic cancer vs other cancers. Pancreatic cancer patients with VTE vs those without VTE had significantly higher incidences of bleeding, cerebral infarction/TIA/SEE, and all-cause death. No significant risk factors for composite VTE were identified., Conclusions: The cumulative incidence of composite VTE during cancer treatment was higher in pancreatic cancer than in other cancer types. Some risk factors for VTE prevalence at cancer diagnosis were identified. Antibiotic overuse poses a critical global health concern, especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) where access to quality healthcare and effective regulatory frameworks often fall short. This issue necessitates a thorough examination of the factors contributing to antibiotic overuse in LMICs, including weak healthcare infrastructure, limited access to quality services, and deficiencies in diagnostic capabilities. To address these challenges, regulatory frameworks should be implemented to restrict non-prescription sales, and accessible point-of-care diagnostic tools must be emphasized. Furthermore, the establishment of effective stewardship programs, the expanded use of vaccines, and the promotion of health systems, hygiene, and sanitation are all crucial components in combating antibiotic overuse. A comprehensive approach that involves collaboration among healthcare professionals, policymakers, researchers, and educators is essential for success. Improving healthcare infrastructure, enhancing access to quality services, and strengthening diagnostic capabilities are paramount. Equally important are education and awareness initiatives to promote responsible antibiotic use, the implementation of regulatory measures, the wider utilization of vaccines, and international cooperation to tackle the challenges of antibiotic overuse in LMICs.

Background: The clinical usefulness of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for patients with depression who do not remit with pharmacotherapy has been recognized. However, the longer time burden on health care providers associated with conducting CBT and the lack of a system for providing CBT lead to inadequate CBT provision to patients who wish to receive it., Objective: We aim to evaluate the feasibility of introducing virtual reality (VR) into CBT for patients with depression., Methods: This is a single-center, interventional, exploratory, single-arm, nonrandomized, open, pre-post-comparative feasibility study of an unapproved medical device program to evaluate the acceptability, preliminary efficacy, and safety of the study device. Eligible patients meet the diagnostic criteria of the DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition) for major depressive disorder, have a 17-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD-17) score of ≥12, and are aged 18-65 years. The sample will comprise 12 patients. VR-based CBT (CBT-VR) sessions will be conducted once a week in an outpatient setting. CBT-VR has been developed in accordance with 6 stages and 16 sessions in the current CBT therapist manual. VR contents and other components correspond to the themes of these 16 sessions. The flow of CBT-VR treatment is similar to that of normal CBT; however, this product replaces the in-person portion of CBT. The primary end point will be the change in the HAMD-17 score from baseline up to 16 sessions. Secondary end points will be treatment retention; psychiatrist consultation time; satisfaction with the equipment or program; ease of use; homework compliance; change in the HAMD-17 score from baseline up to 8 sessions; change in Montgomery-Åsberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS), Quick Inventory of Depressive Symptomatology Self-Report (QIDS-SR), EQ-5D-5L, and Clinical Global Impressions (CGI) scores from baseline up to 8 and 16 sessions; and change in remission and response rates and HAMD-17, MADRS, QIDS-SR, and EQ-5D-5L scores from baseline to 3 and 6 months post intervention (or discontinuation). CBT-VR's feasibility will be assessed at baseline, after 8 sessions, after 16 sessions, or treatment discontinuation, by measuring the time required for testing and medical care during each session and with a patient questionnaire. After intervention discontinuation, a follow-up evaluation will be conducted unless the patient withdraws consent or otherwise discontinues participation in the study after 3 and 6 months., Results: Participant recruitment started on November 30, 2022, and data collection is ongoing as of September 2023., Conclusions: This study is the first step in testing the acceptability, feasibility, and preliminary efficacy and safety of CBT-VR for patients with depression without controls in an open-label trial. Background: Cancer patients often have impaired renal and hepatic function. Opioids are essential to relieve painful symptoms in cancer patients. However, it is unknown which opioids are first prescribed for cancer patients with renal and hepatic impairment. The objective is to investigate the association between the type of first prescribed opioids and the renal/hepatic function of cancer patients., Methods: We used a multicenter database from 2010 to 2019. The number of days from the first opioid prescription to the death was defined as the prognostic period. This period was divided into six categories. The prevalence of opioid prescriptions was calculated for each assessment of renal and hepatic function, divided into prognostic periods. Multinomial logistic regression analysis was used to explore the influence of renal and hepatic function on the first opioid choice., Results: The study included 11 945 patients who died of cancer. In all prognostic period categories, the patients with worse renal function received fewer morphine prescriptions. No trend was observed in hepatic function. The odds ratio of oxycodone to morphine with reference to estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) ≥90 was 1.707 (95% confidence interval: 1.433-2.034) for estimated glomerular filtration rate <30. The odds ratio of fentanyl to morphine with reference to estimated glomerular filtration rate ≥90 was 1.785 (95% confidence interval: 1.492-2.134) for estimated glomerular filtration rate <30. No association was identified between hepatic function and the choice of prescribed opioids., Conclusion: Cancer patients with renal impairment tended to avoid morphine prescriptions, and no specific trend was observed in cancer patients with hepatic impairment., (© The Author(s) 2023. In plant cells, a large pool of iron (Fe) is contained in the nucleolus, as well as in chloroplasts and mitochondria. A central determinant for intracellular distribution of Fe is nicotianamine (NA) generated by NICOTIANAMINE SYNTHASE (NAS). Here, we used Arabidopsis thaliana plants with disrupted NAS genes to study the accumulation of nucleolar iron and understand its role in nucleolar functions and more specifically in rRNA gene expression. We found that nas124 triple mutant plants, which contained lower quantities of the iron ligand NA, also contained less iron in the nucleolus. This was concurrent with the expression of normally silenced rRNA genes from nucleolar organizer regions 2 (NOR2). Notably, in nas234 triple mutant plants, which also contained lower quantities of NA, nucleolar iron and rDNA expression were not affected. In contrast, in both nas124 and nas234, specific RNA modifications were differentially regulated in a genotype dependent manner. Taken together, our results highlight the impact of specific NAS activities in RNA gene expression. Following incomplete spinal cord injury in animals, including humans, substantial locomotor recovery can occur. However, functional aspects of locomotion, such as negotiating obstacles, remains challenging. We collected kinematic and electromyography data in 10 adult cats (5 males, 5 females) before and at weeks 1-2 and 7-8 after a lateral mid-thoracic hemisection on the right side of the cord while they negotiated obstacles of three different heights. Intact cats always cleared obstacles without contact. At weeks 1-2 after hemisection, the ipsilesional right hindlimb contacted obstacles in ∼50% of trials, triggering a stumbling corrective reaction or absent responses, which we termed Other. When complete clearance occurred, we observed exaggerated ipsilesional hindlimb flexion when crossing the obstacle with contralesional Left limbs leading. At weeks 7-8 after hemisection, the proportion of complete clearance increased, Other responses decreased, and stumbling corrective reactions remained relatively unchanged. We found redistribution of weight support after hemisection, with reduced diagonal supports and increased homolateral supports, particularly on the left contralesional side. The main neural strategy for complete clearance in intact cats consisted of increased knee flexor activation. After hemisection, ipsilesional knee flexor activation remained, but it was insufficient or more variable as the limb approached the obstacle. Intact cats also increased their speed when stepping over an obstacle, an increase that disappeared after hemisection. The increase in complete clearance over time after hemisection paralleled the recovery of muscle activation patterns or new strategies. Our results suggest partial recovery of anticipatory control through neuroplastic changes in the locomotor control system. SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT Most spinal cord injuries (SCIs) are incomplete and people can recover some walking functions. However, the main challenge for people with SCIs that do recover a high level of function is to produce a gait that can adjust to everyday occurrences, such as turning, stepping over an obstacle, etc. Here, we use the cat model to answer two basic questions: How does an animal negotiate an obstacle after an incomplete SCI and why does it fail to safely clear it? We show that the inability to clear an obstacle is because of improper activation of muscles that flex the knee. Dietary intake and biomarkers of micronutrient status of 100 non-pregnant women of reproductive age (NPWRA) were assessed to determine optimal levels of iron, zinc, vitamin B12, and folic acid to include in multiply-fortified salt (MFS) that will be evaluated in an upcoming trial. Weighed food records were obtained from participants to measure intake of micronutrients and discretionary salt, and to assess adequacy using Indian Nutrient Reference Values (NRVs). Statistical modeling was used to determine optimal fortification levels to reduce inadequate micronutrient intake while limiting intake above the upper limit. Fasting blood samples were obtained to assess iron, zinc, vitamin B12, and folate status. In usual diets, inadequate intake of iron (46%), zinc (95%), vitamin B12 (83%), and folate (36%) was high. Mean intake of discretionary salt was 4.7 g/day. Prevalence estimates of anemia (37%), iron deficiency (67%), zinc deficiency (34%), vitamin B12 insufficiency (37%), and folate insufficiency (70%) were also high. Simulating the addition of optimized MFS to usual diets resulted in percentage point (pp) reductions in inadequate intake by 29 pp for iron, 76 pp for zinc, 81 pp for vitamin B12, and 36 pp for folate. MFS holds potential to reduce the burden of micronutrient deficiencies in this setting.

Background: The Cancer-VTE Registry was a large-scale, multicenter, prospective registry designed to investigate real-world data on venous thromboembolism (VTE) incidence and risk factors in adult Japanese patients with solid tumors. This pre-specified subgroup analysis aimed to estimate the incidence of VTE, including VTE types other than symptomatic VTE, and identify risk factors of VTE in stomach cancer from the Cancer-VTE Registry., Methods: Stage II-IV stomach cancer patients who planned to initiate cancer therapy and underwent VTE screening within 2 months before registration were enrolled., Results: Of 1,896 patients enrolled, 131 (6.9%) had VTE at baseline, but 96.2% were asymptomatic. Female sex, age ≥ 65 years, VTE history, and D-dimer > 1.2 μg/mL were independent risk factors of VTE at baseline. Notably, patients with D-dimer > 1.2 µg/mL at the time of cancer diagnosis had an approximately 20-fold risk of VTE. During follow-up, event incidences were symptomatic VTE, 0.3%; incidental VTE requiring treatment, 1.1%; composite VTE, 1.4%; bleeding, 1.6%; cerebral infarction/transient ischemic attack/systemic embolic events, 0.7%; and all-cause death, 15.0%. The incidence of all-cause death was higher in patients with VTE vs without VTE at baseline (adjusted hazard ratio 1.67; 95% confidence interval 1.21-2.32; p = 0.002)., Conclusions: VTE prevalence at the time of cancer diagnosis was not negligible and was extremely high when the patients had high D-dimer. Zinc is an essential micronutrient that promotes normal growth, development and immune function. In the context of persistent dietary zinc inadequacies, large-scale food fortification can help fill the gap between intake and requirements. Burkina Faso mandates wheat flour fortification with iron and folic acid. We used activity-based cost modelling to estimate the cost of adding zinc to the country's wheat flour fortification standard assuming (1) no change in compliance with the national standard, and (2) a substantial improvement in compliance. We used household food consumption data to model effective coverage, that is, the number of women of reproductive age (WRA) predicted to achieve adequate zinc density (zinc intake/1000 kcal) with the addition of fortification to diets. Without interventions, the prevalence of inadequate dietary zinc density was ~35.5%. With no change in compliance, the annual average incremental cost of adding zinc to fortified wheat flour was $10,347, which would effectively cover <1% of WRA at an incremental cost of ~$0.54/WRA effectively covered. Improving compliance added ~$300,000/year to the cost of the fortification programme without zinc; including zinc added another ~$78,000/year but only reduced inadequate intake among WRA by 3.6% at an incremental cost of ~$0.45/WRA effectively covered. Although the incremental cost of adding zinc to wheat flour is low ($0.01/wheat flour consumer/year), given low levels of wheat flour consumption, zinc fortification of wheat flour alone contributes marginally to, but will not fully close, the dietary zinc gap. Background: This subgroup analysis of the Cancer-VTE Registry, a nationwide, large-scale, multicenter observational study with a 1-year follow-up, assessed real-world data on venous thromboembolism (VTE) among Japanese patients with breast cancer., Methods: Patients with stage II-IV pretreatment breast cancer screened for VTE at enrollment were included. During the 1-year follow-up period, incidences of VTE, bleeding, and all-cause death, and background factors associated with VTE risk were examined., Results: Of 9,630 patients in the Cancer-VTE Registry analysis set, 993 (10.3%) had breast cancer (973 [98.0%] did not have and 20 [2.0%] had VTE at baseline). The mean age was 58.4 years, 73.4% of patients had stage II cancer, and 94.8% had an Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status (ECOG PS) of 0. Risk factors for VTE at baseline by univariable analysis were age ≥ 65 years, ECOG PS of 2, VTE history, and D-dimer > 1.2 μg/mL. During follow-up, the incidence of symptomatic VTE was 0.4%; incidental VTE requiring treatment, 0.1%; composite VTE (symptomatic VTE and incidental VTE requiring treatment), 0.5%; bleeding, 0.2%; cerebral infarction/transient ischemic attack/systemic embolic event, 0.2%; and all-cause death, 2.1%. One patient with symptomatic VTE developed pulmonary embolism (PE) and died. Incidences of VTE and all-cause death were higher in patients with VTE vs without VTE at baseline., Conclusions: In Japanese patients with breast cancer, VTE screening before initiating cancer treatment revealed a 2.0% prevalence of VTE. Objective: To evaluate adherence to 3 central operational recommendations for acute rehabilitation in the Norwegian trauma plan., Methods: A prospective multi-centre study of 538 adults with moderate and severe trauma with New Injury Severity Score > 9., Results: Adherence to the first recommendation, assessment by a physical medicine and rehabilitation physician within 72 h following admission to the intensive care unit (ICU) at the trauma centre, was documented for 18% of patients. Adherence to the second recommendation, early rehabilitation in the intensive care unit, was documented for 72% of those with severe trauma and ≥ 2 days ICU stay. Predictors for early rehabilitation were ICU length of stay and spinal cord injury. Adherence to the third recommendation, direct transfer of patients from acute ward to a specialized rehabilitation unit, was documented in 22% of patients, and occurred more often in those with severe trauma (26%), spinal cord injury (54%) and traumatic brain injury (39%). Being employed, having head or spinal chord injury and longer ICU stay were predictors for direct transfer to a specialized rehabilitation unit., Conclusion: Adherence to acute rehabilitation guidelines after trauma is poor. This applies to documented early assessment by a physical medicine and rehabilitation physician, and direct transfer from acute care to rehabilitation after head and extremity injuries. These findings indicate a need for more systematic integration of rehabilitation in the acute treatment phase after trauma.

Spinal sensorimotor circuits interact with supraspinal and peripheral inputs to generate quadrupedal locomotion. Ascending and descending spinal pathways ensure coordination between the forelimbs and hindlimbs. Spinal cord injury (SCI) disrupts these pathways. To investigate the control of interlimb coordination and hindlimb locomotor recovery, we performed two lateral thoracic hemisections on opposite sides of the cord (right T5-T6 and left T10-T11) at an interval of approximately two months in eight adult cats. In three cats, the spinal cord was transected at T12-T13. We collected electromyography (EMG) and kinematic data during quadrupedal and hindlimb-only locomotion before and after spinal lesions. We show that (1) cats spontaneously recover quadrupedal locomotion following staggered hemisections but require balance assistance after the second one, (2) coordination between the forelimbs and hindlimbs displays 2:1 patterns (two cycles of one forelimb within one hindlimb cycle) and becomes weaker and more variable after both hemisections, (3) left-right asymmetries in hindlimb stance and swing durations appear after the first hemisection and reverse after the second, and (4) support periods reorganize after staggered hemisections to favor support involving both forelimbs and diagonal limbs. Cats expressed hindlimb locomotion the day following spinal transection, indicating that lumbar sensorimotor circuits play a prominent role in hindlimb locomotor recovery after staggered hemisections. Introduction: During locomotion, cutaneous reflexes play an essential role in rapidly responding to an external perturbation, for example, to prevent a fall when the foot contacts an obstacle. In cats and humans, cutaneous reflexes involve all four limbs and are task- and phase modulated to generate functionally appropriate whole-body responses., Methods: To assess task-dependent modulation of cutaneous interlimb reflexes, we electrically stimulated the superficial radial or superficial peroneal nerves in adult cats and recorded muscle activity in the four limbs during tied-belt (equal left-right speeds) and split-belt (different left-right speeds) locomotion., Results: We show that the pattern of intra- and interlimb cutaneous reflexes in fore- and hindlimbs muscles and their phase-dependent modulation were conserved during tied-belt and split-belt locomotion. Short-latency cutaneous reflex responses to muscles of the stimulated limb were more likely to be evoked and phase-modulated when compared to muscles in the other limbs. In some muscles, the degree of reflex modulation was significantly reduced during split-belt locomotion compared to tied-belt conditions. In traditional nonintrusive load monitoring (NILM) systems, the measurement device is installed upstream of an electrical system to acquire the total aggregate absorbed power and derive the powers absorbed by the individual electrical loads. Knowing the energy consumption related to each load makes the user aware and capable of identifying malfunctioning or less-efficient loads in order to reduce consumption through appropriate corrective actions. To meet the feedback needs of modern home, energy, and assisted environment management systems, the nonintrusive monitoring of the power status (ON or OFF) of a load is often required, regardless of the information associated with its consumption. This parameter is not easy to obtain from common NILM systems. This article proposes an inexpensive and easy-to-install monitoring system capable of providing information on the status of the various loads powered by an electrical system. The proposed technique involves the processing of the traces obtained by a measurement system based on Sweep Frequency Response Analysis (SFRA) through a Support Vector Machine (SVM) algorithm. The overall accuracy of the system in its final configuration is between 94% and 99%, depending on the amount of data used for training. Numerous tests have been conducted on many loads with different characteristics. The positive results obtained are illustrated and commented on.

In the context of the widespread distribution of zero valent iron nanoparticles (nZVI) in the environment and its possible exposure to many aquatic and terrestrial organisms, this study investigates the effects, uptake, bioaccumulation, localisation and possible transformations of nZVI in two different forms (aqueous dispersion-Nanofer 25S and air-stable powder-Nanofer STAR) in a model plant- Arabidopsis thaliana . Seedlings exposed to Nanofer STAR displayed symptoms of toxicity, including chlorosis and reduced growth. At the tissue and cellular level, the exposure to Nanofer STAR induced a strong accumulation of Fe in the root intercellular spaces and in Fe-rich granules in pollen grains. Nanofer STAR did not undergo any transformations during 7 days of incubation, while in Nanofer 25S, three different behaviours were observed: (i) stability, (ii) partial dissolution and (iii) the agglomeration process. The size distributions obtained by SP-ICP-MS/MS demonstrated that regardless of the type of nZVI used, iron was taken up and accumulated in the plant, mainly in the form of intact nanoparticles. The agglomerates created in the growth medium in the case of Nanofer 25S were not taken up by the plant. Taken together, the results indicate that Arabidopsis plants do take up, transport and accumulate nZVI in all parts of the plants, including the seeds, which will provide a better understanding of the behaviour and transformations of nZVI once released into the environment, a critical issue from the point of view of food safety.

Background: Maternal obesity has been associated with a higher risk of pregnancy-related complications in mothers and offspring; however, effective interventions have not yet been developed. We tested two interventions, calorie restriction and pravastatin administration, during pregnancy in a rhesus macaque model with the hypothesis that these interventions would normalize metabolic dysregulation in pregnant mothers leading to an improvement in infant metabolic and cognitive/social development., Methods: A total of 19 obese mothers were assigned to either one of the two intervention groups ( n  = 5 for calorie restriction; n  = 7 for pravastatin) or an obese control group ( n  = 7) with no intervention, and maternal gestational samples and postnatal infant samples were compared with lean control mothers ( n  = 6) using metabolomics methods., Results: Gestational calorie restriction normalized one-carbon metabolism dysregulation in obese mothers, but altered energy metabolism in her offspring. Although administration of pravastatin during pregnancy tended to normalize blood cholesterol in the mothers, it potentially impacted the gut microbiome and kidney function of their offspring. In the offspring, both calorie restriction and pravastatin administration during pregnancy tended to normalize the activity of AMPK in the brain at 6 months, and while results of the Visual Paired-Comparison test, which measures infant recognition memory, was not significantly impacted by either of the interventions, gestational pravastatin administration, but not calorie restriction, tended to normalize anxiety assessed by the Human Intruder test., Conclusions: Although the two interventions tested in a non-human primate model led to some improvements in metabolism and/or infant brain development, negative impacts were also found in both mothers and infants. Background: Persistent post-concussion symptoms (PPCS) affect between 34 and 46% after a mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). Many also experience exercise intolerance. Sub-symptom threshold aerobic exercise, SSTAE (exercise at an intensity level that does not increase symptoms) is proposed as a treatment to both reduce the symptom burden and increase the exercise tolerance after the injury. It is unclear if this also applies in a more chronic phase after mTBI., Main Purpose: The main purpose of this study is to evaluate whether SSTAE in addition to ordinary rehabilitation will lead to clinically meaningful improvement of symptom burden, normalize exercise tolerance, increase physical activity, improve health-related quality of life, and reduce patient-specific activity limitations compared to a control group that only receives ordinary rehabilitation., Design: Randomized, controlled, single-blind parallel-group study with three measurement times; T0 at baseline, T1 after the intervention and T2 six months after T1., Methods: Patients between the ages of 18 and 60 with exercise intolerance and persistent PPCS (> 3 months) will be recruited to the study and randomized to two groups. All patients will receive follow-up at the outpatient TBI clinic. The intervention group will in addition receive SSTAE for 12 weeks with exercise diaries and a retest every 3 weeks for optimal dosage and progression. The Rivermead post-concussion symptoms questionnaire will be the main outcome measure. The secondary outcome measure will be a test of exercise tolerance-the Buffalo Concussion Treadmill Test. Other outcome measures include the patient-specific functional scale that measures patient-specific activity limitations, as well as outcome measures for diagnosis-specific health-related quality of life, anxiety and depression, specific symptoms such as dizziness, headache and fatigue, and physical activity., Discussion: This study will add knowledge about the effect of SSTAE and whether it should be implemented in rehabilitation for the adult population with persistent PPCS after mTBI. The nested feasibility trial showed that the SSTAE intervention was safe and that the study procedures and delivery of the intervention overall were feasible. While public health crises such as the coronavirus pandemic transcend national borders, practical efforts to combat them are often instantiated at the national level. Thus, national group identities may play key roles in shaping compliance with and support for preventative measures (e.g., hygiene and lockdowns). Using data from 25,159 participants across representative samples from 21 nations, we investigated how different modalities of ingroup identification (attachment and glorification) are linked with reactions to the coronavirus pandemic (compliance and support for lockdown restrictions). We also examined the extent to which the associations of attachment and glorification with responses to the coronavirus pandemic are mediated through trust in information about the coronavirus pandemic from scientific and government sources. Multilevel models suggested that attachment, but not glorification, was associated with increased trust in science and compliance with federal COVID-19 guidelines. However, while both attachment and glorification were associated with trust in government and support for lockdown restrictions, glorification was more strongly associated with trust in government information than attachment. These results suggest that both attachment and glorification can be useful for promoting public health, although glorification's role, while potentially stronger, is restricted to pathways through trust in government information., (© 2022 British Psychological Society.)

We present a search for dark matter particles with sub-GeV/c^{2} masses whose interactions have final state electrons using the DarkSide-50 experiment's (12 306±184)  kg d low-radioactivity liquid argon exposure. By analyzing the ionization signals, we exclude new parameter space for the dark matter-electron cross section σ[over ¯]&#95;{e}, the axioelectric coupling constant g&#95;{Ae}, and the dark photon kinetic mixing parameter κ. We also set the first dark matter direct-detection constraints on the mixing angle |U&#95;{e4}|^{2} for keV/c^{2} sterile neutrinos.

Dark matter elastic scattering off nuclei can result in the excitation and ionization of the recoiling atom through the so-called Migdal effect. The energy deposition from the ionization electron adds to the energy deposited by the recoiling nuclear system and allows for the detection of interactions of sub-GeV/c^{2} mass dark matter. We present new constraints for sub-GeV/c^{2} dark matter using the dual-phase liquid argon time projection chamber of the DarkSide-50 experiment with an exposure of (12 306±184)  kg d. The analysis is based on the ionization signal alone and significantly enhances the sensitivity of DarkSide-50, enabling sensitivity to dark matter with masses down to 40  MeV/c^{2}. Furthermore, it sets the most stringent upper limit on the spin independent dark matter nucleon cross section for masses below 3.6  GeV/c^{2}.

Asynchronous motors represent a large percentage of motors used in the electrical industry. Suitable predictive maintenance techniques are strongly required when these motors are critical in their operations. Continuous non-invasive monitoring techniques can be investigated to avoid the disconnection of the motors under test and service interruption. This paper proposes an innovative predictive monitoring system based on the online sweep frequency response analysis (SFRA) technique. The testing system applies variable frequency sinusoidal signals to the motors and then acquires and processes the applied and response signals in the frequency domain. In the literature, SFRA has been applied to power transformers and electric motors switched off and disconnected from the main grid. The approach described in this work is innovative. Coupling circuits allow for the injection and acquisition of the signals, while grids feed the motors. A comparison between the transfer functions (TFs) of healthy motors and those with slight damage was performed with a batch of 1.5 kW, four-pole induction motors to investigate the technique's performance. The results show that the online SFRA could be of interest for monitoring induction motors' health conditions, especially for mission-critical and safety-critical applications. The overall cost of the whole testing system, including the coupling filters and cables, is less than EUR 400.
