Studies suggest that visual short-term memory (VSTM) is a continuous resource that can be flexibly allocated using probabilistic cues that indicate test likelihood (i.e., goal-directed attentional priority to those items). Previous studies using simultaneous cues have not examined this flexible allocation beyond two distinct levels of priority. Moreover, previous studies have not examined whether there are individual differences in the ability to flexibly allocate VSTM resources, as well as whether this ability benefits from practice. The current study used a continuous report procedure to examine whether participants can use up to three levels of attentional priority to allocate VSTM resources via simultaneous probabilistic spatial cues. Three experiments were performed with differing priority levels, cues, and cue presentation times. Group level analysis demonstrated flexible allocation of VSTM resources; however, there was limited evidence that participants could use three goal-directed priority levels. A temporal analysis suggested that task fatigue, rather than practice effects, may interact with item priority. A Bayesian individual-differences analysis revealed that a minority of participants were using three levels of attentional priority, demonstrating that, while possible, it is not the predominant pattern of behaviour. Thus, we provided evidence that flexible allocation to three attention levels is possible under simultaneous cuing conditions for a minority of participants. Despite recent tremendous progress in optical imaging and metrology 1-6 , there remains a substantial resolution gap between atomic-scale transmission electron microscopy and optical techniques. Is optical imaging and metrology of nanostructures exhibiting Brownian motion possible with such resolution, beyond thermal fluctuations? Here we report on an experiment in which the average position of a nanowire with a thermal oscillation amplitude of ∼150 pm is resolved in single-shot measurements with subatomic precision of 92 pm, using light at a wavelength of λ = 488 nm, providing an example of such sub-Brownian metrology with ∼λ/5,300 precision. To localize the nanowire, we employ a deep-learning analysis of the scattering of topologically structured light, which is highly sensitive to the nanowire's position. This non-invasive metrology with absolute errors down to a fraction of the typical size of an atom, opens a range of opportunities to study picometre-scale phenomena with light., (© 2023. Objective: The early intervention service (EIS) model for psychosis has been implemented with increasing frequency; yet, improving outcomes across domains for all patients remains challenging. Measurement-based care can strengthen outcomes by optimizing interventions and promoting alignment with standards, but it is still not widely deployed in EIS. The authors conducted a scoping review by systematically identifying and synthesizing measures used in EIS related to purpose (i.e., to assess patients, families, and programs), domains (e.g., symptoms, quality of life), and reporting perspectives (of patients, families, and clinicians)., Methods: EMBASE, MEDLINE, PsycINFO, CINAHL, and Cochrane Library databases were searched for pertinent literature published between 2000 and 2020. Two reviewers independently screened titles, abstracts, and full texts and extracted data. Measures were classified as clinician-reported outcome measures (CROMs), patient-reported outcome or experience measures (PROMs/PREMs), or family-reported outcome or experience measures (FROMs/FREMs)., Results: In total, 172 measures of 27 domains were identified from 115 articles. Nineteen measures had been used to assess programs on fidelity, service engagement, and satisfaction; 136 to assess patients on duration of untreated psychosis, symptoms, functioning, quality of life, and others; and 17 to assess families on coping and burden, background, and others. Sixty percent were CROMs, 30% were PROMs/PREMs, and 10% were FROMs/FREMs., Conclusions: Greater inclusion of PROMs and FROMs is needed because they align with the EIS philosophy of patient and family engagement and may improve shared decision making and outcomes. A comprehensive, meaningfully synthesized archive of measures can advance measurement-based care, services research, and data harmonization in early psychosis.

Flexural oscillations of freestanding films, nanomembranes, and nanowires are attracting growing attention for their importance to the fundamental physical and optical properties and device applications of two-dimensional and nanostructured (meta)materials. Here, we report on the observation of short-time scale ballistic motion in the flexural mode of a nanomembrane cantilever, driven by thermal fluctuation of flexural phonons, including measurements of ballistic velocities and displacements performed with subatomic resolution, using a free electron edge-scattering technique. Within intervals <10 μs, the membrane moves ballistically at a constant velocity, typically ~300 μm/s, while Brownian-like dynamics emerge for longer observation periods. Access to the ballistic regime provides verification of the equipartition theorem and Maxwell-Boltzmann statistics for flexural modes and can be used in fast thermometry and mass sensing during atomic absorption/desorption processes on the membrane.

Flat, gradient index, metasurface optics - in particular all-dielectric metalenses - have emerged and evolved over recent years as compact, lightweight alternative to their conventional bulk glass/crystal counterparts. Here we show that the focal properties of all-dielectric metalenses can be switched via coherent control, which is to say by changing the local electromagnetic field in the metalens plane rather than any physical or geometric property of the nanostructure or surrounding medium. The selective excitation of predominantly electric or magnetic resonant modes in the constituent cells of the metalens provides for switching, by design, of its phase profile enabling binary switching of focal length for a given lens type and, uniquely, switching between different (spherical and axicon) lens types.

Nanomechanical photonic metamaterials provide a wealth of active switching, nonlinear, and enhanced light-matter interaction functionalities by coupling optically and mechanically resonant subsystems. Thermal (Brownian) motion of the nanostructural components of such metamaterials leads to fluctuations in optical properties, which may manifest as noise, but which also present opportunity to characterize performance and thereby optimize design at the level of individual nanomechanical elements. We show that nanomechanical motion in an all-dielectric metamaterial ensemble of silicon-on-silicon-nitride nanowires can be controlled by light at sub-μW/μm 2 intensities. Induced changes in nanowire temperature of just a few Kelvin and nonthermal optical forces generated within the structure change the few-MHz Eigenfrequencies and/or picometric displacement amplitudes of motion, and thereby metamaterial transmission. The tuning mechanism can provide active control of frequency response in photonic metadevices and may serve as a basis for bolometric, mass, and micro/nanostructural stress sensing.

The content and organization of hyaluronan (HA) in the extracellular matrix (ECM) have been identified as strong indicators of inflammation in joint disease, although the source and role of HA as an effector of inflammation is not clear. In this study, we established co-cultures of activated human CD4 T cells with fibroblast-like synoviocytes (FLS) from osteoarthritis (OA) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) subjects and examined the role of HA in promoting inflammatory events. Co-cultures of RA FLS with activated CD4 T cells generated an HA-enriched ECM that promoted enhanced monocyte adhesion compared to co-cultures of OA FLS with activated CD4 T cells. In addition, both OA FLS and RA FLS co-cultures with activated CD4 T cells elicited significant increases in the expression of IL1β, TNF, and IL6, with the increase in IL6 expression most prominent in RA co-cultures. Blocking HA synthesis and accumulation with 4-methylumbelliferone reduced expression of IL6, IL1β, and TNF in both OA FLS and RA FLS co-cultures. The increase in HA synthesis in the co-cultures was mimicked by IL6 trans-signaling of FLS in the absence of CD4 T cells. Inhibition of HA synthesis blocked the increase in IL6 by RA FLS mediated by IL6 trans-signaling, suggesting that the HA synthetic pathway may be a key mediator in IL6 expression by FLS. Focused ion beam (FIB) milling is an important rapid prototyping tool for micro- and nanofabrication and device and materials characterization. It allows for the manufacturing of arbitrary structures in a wide variety of materials, but establishing the process parameters for a given task is a multidimensional optimization challenge, usually addressed through time-consuming, iterative trial-and-error. Here, we show that deep learning from prior experience of manufacturing can predict the postfabrication appearance of structures manufactured by focused ion beam (FIB) milling with >96% accuracy over a range of ion beam parameters, taking account of instrument- and target-specific artifacts. With predictions taking only a few milliseconds, the methodology may be deployed in near real time to expedite optimization and improve reproducibility in FIB processing.

It has become clear that sleep after learning has beneficial effects on the later retrieval of newly acquired memories. The neural mechanisms underlying these effects are becoming increasingly clear as well, particularly those of non-REM sleep. However, much is still unknown about the sleep and memory relationship: the sleep state or features of sleep physiology that associate with memory performance often vary by task or experimental design, and the nature of this variability is not entirely clear. This paper describes pertinent features of sleep physiology and provides a detailed review of the scientific literature indicating beneficial effects of post-learning sleep on memory retrieval. This paper additionally introduces a hypothesis which attributes these beneficial effects of post-learning sleep to separable processes of memory reinforcement and memory refinement whereby reinforcement supports one's ability to retrieve a given memory and refinement supports the precision of that memory retrieval in the context of competitive alternatives. It is observed that features of non-REM sleep are involved in a post-learning substantiation of memory representations that benefit memory performance; thus, memory reinforcement is primarily attributed to non-REM sleep. Electron microscopy, scanning probe, and optical super-resolution imaging techniques with nanometric resolution are now routinely available but cannot capture the characteristically fast (MHz-GHz frequency) movements of micro-/nano-objects. Meanwhile, optical interferometric techniques can detect high-frequency picometric displacements but only with diffraction-limited lateral resolution. Here, we introduce a motion visualization technique, based on the spectrally resolved detection of secondary electron emission from moving objects, that combines picometric displacement sensitivity with the nanometric spatial (positional/imaging) resolution of electron microscopy. The sensitivity of the technique is quantitatively validated against the thermodynamically defined amplitude of a nanocantilever's Brownian motion. It is further demonstrated in visualizing externally driven modes of cantilever, nanomechanical photonic metamaterial, and MEMS device structures. With a noise floor reaching ∼1 pm/Hz 1/2 , it can provide for the study of oscillatory movements with subatomic amplitudes, presenting new opportunities for the interrogation of motion in functional structures across the materials, bio- and nanosciences.

Background: The presence of thigh muscle edema as characterized by increased signal intensity on MRI has been used to support the diagnosis of presumed local anesthetic-induced myotoxicity reported after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) with continuous adductor canal block (CACB). However, neither postoperative baseline imaging appearance nor muscle enzyme values have been described in conjunction with this clinical scenario. Thus, the usefulness of MRI or enzymatic biomarkers of muscle injury for supporting the diagnosis of local anesthetic myotoxicity is unknown., Methods: This descriptive case series documents postoperative MRI appearance of the ipsilateral upper leg, plus preoperative and postoperative creatine phosphokinase and aldolase values in volunteer patients who underwent uncomplicated TKA with CACB., Results: In 27 volunteer patients with no postsurgical evidence of clinically relevant myotoxicity, anterior thigh muscle edema was universally evident on imaging (n=12) and muscle enzyme values (n=19) were normal or only slightly elevated., Conclusions: The non-specificity of these findings suggests that MRI and near normal muscle enzyme levels are of limited diagnostic value when there is clinical suspicion of local anesthetic myotoxicity in the setting of TKA with CACB., Trial Registration Number: NCT04821245., Competing Interests: Competing interests: None declared., (© American Society of Regional Anesthesia & Pain Medicine 2021. Nanoscale objects move fast and oscillate billions of times per second. Such movements occur naturally in the form of thermal (Brownian) motion while stimulated movements underpin the functionality of nano-mechanical sensors and active nano-(electro/opto) mechanical devices. Here we introduce a methodology for detecting such movements, based on the spectral analysis of secondary electron emission from moving nanostructures, that is sensitive to displacements of sub-atomic amplitude. We demonstrate the detection of nanowire Brownian oscillations of ∼10 pm amplitude and hyperspectral mapping of stimulated oscillations of setae on the body of a common flea. Here we describe the dataset of the first report of pharmacogenomics profiling in an outpatient spine setting with the primary aims to catalog: 1) the genes, alleles, and associated rs Numbers (accession numbers for specific single-nucleotide polymorphisms) analysed and 2) the genotypes and corresponding phenotypes of the genes involved in metabolizing 37 commonly used analgesic medications. The present description applies to analgesic medication-metabolizing enzymes and may be especially valuable to investigators who are exploring strategies to optimize pharmacologic pain management (e.g., by tailoring analgesic regimens to the genetically identified sensitivities of the patient). Buccal swabs were used to acquire tissue samples of 30 adult patients who presented to an outpatient spine clinic with the chief concern of axial neck and/or back pain. Array-based assays were then used to detect the alleles of genes involved in the metabolism of pain medications, including all common (wild type) and most rare variant alleles with known clinical significance. Both CYP450 isozymes - including CYP1A2, CYP2B6, CYP2C9, CYP2C19, CYP2D6, CYP3A4, and CYP3A5 - and the phase II enzyme UDP-glucuronosyltransferase-2B7 (UGT2B7) were examined. Genotypes/phenotypes were then used to evaluate each patient's relative ability to metabolize 37 commonly used analgesic medications. These medications included both non-opioid analgesics (i.e., aspirin, diclofenac, nabumetone, indomethacin, meloxicam, piroxicam, tenoxicam, lornoxicam, celecoxib, ibuprofen, flurbiprofen, ketoprofen, fenoprofen, naproxen, and mefenamic acid) and opioid analgesics (i.e., morphine, codeine, dihydrocodeine, ethylmorphine, hydrocodone, hydromorphone, oxycodone, oxymorphone, alfentanil, fentanyl, sufentanil, meperidine, ketobemidone, dextropropoxyphene, levacetylmethadol, loperamide, methadone, buprenorphine, dextromethorphan, tramadol, tapentadol, and tilidine). The genes, alleles, and associated rs Numbers that were analysed are provided. Also provided are: 1) the genotypes and corresponding phenotypes of the genes involved in metabolizing 37 commonly used analgesic medications and 2) the mechanisms of metabolism of the analgesic medications by primary and ancillary pathways. In supplemental spreadsheets, the raw and analysed pharmacogenomics data for all 30 patients evaluated in the primary research article are additionally provided. Objective: Pharmacogenomics may help personalize medicine and improve therapeutic selection. This is the first study investigating how pharmacogenomic testing may inform analgesic selection in patients with spine disease. We profile pharmacogenetic differences in pain medication-metabolizing enzymes across patients presenting at an outpatient spine clinic and provide preliminary evidence that genetic polymorphisms may help explain interpatient differences in preoperative pain refractory to conservative management., Methods: Adults presenting to our outpatient spine clinic with chief symptoms of neck and/or back pain were prospectively enrolled over 9 months. Patients completed the Wong-Baker FACES and numeric pain rating scales for their chief pain symptom and provided detailed medication histories and cheek swab samples for genomic analysis., Results: Thirty adults were included (mean age, 60.6 ± 15.3 years). The chief concern was neck pain in 23%, back pain in 67%, and combined neck/back pain in 10%. At enrollment, patient analgesic regimens comprised 3 ± 1 unique medications, including 1 ± 1 opioids. After genomic analysis, 14/30 patients (47%) were identified as suboptimal metabolizers of ≥1 medications in their analgesic regimen. Of these patients, 93% were suboptimal metabolizers of their prescribed opioid analgesic. Nonetheless, pain scores were similar between optimal and suboptimal metabolizer groups., Conclusions: This pilot study shows that a large proportion of the spine outpatient population may use pain medications for which they are suboptimal metabolizers. Further studies should assess whether these pharmacogenomic differences indicate differences in odds of receiving therapeutic benefit from surgery or if they can be used to generate more effective postoperative analgesic regimens., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier Inc. Artificial intelligence (AI) is the most important new methodology in scientific research since the adoption of quantum mechanics and it is providing exciting results in numerous fields of science and technology. In this review we summarize research and discuss future opportunities for AI in the domains of photonics, nanophotonics, plasmonics and photonic materials discovery, including metamaterials.

Continuous and reversible tuning of the properties of optical metasurfaces, as a functionality that would enable a range of device applications, has been a focus of the metasurface research field in recent years. Tuning mechanisms proposed and demonstrated so far have generally relied upon changing the morphology of a metasurface or the intrinsic properties of its constituent materials. Here we introduce, via numerical simulation, an alternative approach to achieve continuous tuning of gradient metasurface response, and illustrate its potential application to the challenge of continuous beam steering, as required for example in LIDAR and machine vision systems. It is based upon the coherent illumination of a silicon nano-pillar metasurface with two counter-propagating beams. Control of the input beams' relative phase and intensity enables tuning of the individual nano-pillars' electromagnetic response and thereby the phase gradient of the array, which in turn steers the direction of the output beam continuously over an angular range of approximately 9 degrees.

Background: Specialized early intervention programs for individuals experiencing a first episode of psychosis prioritize service engagement, generally operationalized as attendance, treatment completion, therapeutic alliance, and treatment adherence. However, there are critical theoretical and methodological gaps in understanding how service users experience and define their engagement with the service., Objectives: This study aimed to explore how current and former service users define their engagement with a specialized early intervention program., Design: A qualitative descriptive approach was used to explore service users' decisions to use, remain involved with, and/or leave early intervention services., Setting: This study took place in an early intervention service for psychosis in Montreal, Canada., Participants: Twenty-four participants who had experienced a first episode of psychosis and had been engaged in the service to varying degrees (fully engaged, partially engaged, disengaged) took part in in-depth interviews., Methods: In-depth interviews were employed to collect rich insights into participants' experiences and perceptions. The interviews were transcribed and analysed using thematic analysis, beginning with an inductive approach and completing the analysis using a theoretical approach. During the analysis, our original notions of engagement and disengagement were challenged by theorizing engagement in terms of agency and structure. Researchers engaged in reflexive practices to maintain and promote research rigor and trustworthiness., Results: Participants' narratives were thematically analyzed and organized into three themes: fluidity and temporality of engagement and disengagement; engagement as an ongoing negotiation; and critical structures and agency. Participants described engagement in a variety of ways, some of which were broader than service use and focused on self-care and commitment to recovery. These conceptions were subject to change as the individuals' perceptions of their needs changed. As needs changed, individuals also negotiated and renegotiated their care needs with themselves and with their treatment team. These exercises of agency were constrained by key structures: the treatment team, family and friends, and societal conceptions of mental health., Conclusions: Our study findings argue for an expanded definition of engagement which prioritizes individuals' experience and acknowledges the steps towards recovery that they may make outside of the purview of the service. Objective: Synovial membrane inflammation is common in osteoarthritis (OA) and increases cartilage injury. However, synovial fluid and histology studies suggest that OA inflammatory responses are not homogeneous. Greater understanding of these responses may provide new insights into OA disease mechanisms. We undertook this study to develop a novel multiparameter approach to phenotype synovial responses in knee OA., Methods: Cell composition and soluble protein production were measured by flow cytometry and multiplex enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay in synovium collected from OA patients undergoing knee replacement surgery (n = 35)., Results: Testing disaggregation conditions showed that aggressive digestion improved synovial cell yield and mesenchymal staining by flow cytometry, but it negatively impacted CD4+ T cell and CD56+ natural killer cell staining. Less aggressive digestion preserved these markers and showed highly variable T cell infiltration (range 0-43%; n = 32). Correlation analysis identified mesenchymal subpopulations associated with different nonmesenchymal populations, including macrophages and T cells (CD45+CD11b+HLA-DR+ myeloid cells with PDPN+CD73+CD90-CD34- mesenchymal cells [r = 0.65, P < 0.0001]; and CD45+CD3+ T cells with PDPN+CD73+CD90+CD34+ mesenchymal cells [r = 0.50, P = 0.003]). Interleukin-6 (IL-6) measured by flow cytometry strongly correlated with IL-6 released by ex vivo culture of synovial tissue (r = 0.59, P = 0.0012) and was highest in mesenchymal cells coexpressing CD90 and CD34. IL-6, IL-8, complement factor D, and IL-10 release correlated positively with tissue cellularity (P = 0.0042, P = 0.018, P = 0.0012, and P = 0.038, respectively). Additionally, increased CD8+ T cell numbers correlated with retinol binding protein 4 (P = 0.033). Finally, combining flow cytometry and multiplex data identified patient clusters with different types of inflammatory responses., Conclusion: We used a novel approach to analyze OA synovium, identifying patient-specific inflammatory clusters. Despite complaints of difficulties in waking socioemotional functioning by individuals with insomnia, only a few studies have investigated emotion processing performance in this group. Additionally, the role of sleep in socioemotional processing has not been investigated extensively nor using quantitative measures of sleep. Individuals with insomnia symptoms ( n = 14) and healthy good sleepers ( n = 15) completed two nights of at-home polysomnography, followed by an afternoon of in-lab performance testing on tasks measuring the processing of emotional facial expressions. The insomnia group self-reported less total sleep time, but no other group differences in sleep or task performance were observed. Greater beta EEG power throughout the night was associated with higher intensity ratings of happy, fearful and sad faces for individuals with insomnia, yet blunted sensitivity and lower accuracy for good sleepers. Thus, the presence of hyperarousal differentially impacted socioemotional processing of faces in individuals with insomnia symptoms and good sleepers.

This paper presents new excavation data and new radiometric dates for Jebel Moya, south-central Sudan. These data suggest revisions to previous chronological understandings of the site. New excavations, initiated in 2017, show a longer, more continuous occupation of the site than has been previously recognised. Archaeozoological and archaeobotanical analyses provide evidence for domesticated taxa. Archaeobotanical evidence is dominated by domesticated sorghum ( Sorghum bicolor ), radiocarbon dated to c . 2550-2210 BC. Faunal remains include cattle and goat/sheep. A late third-millennium BC date on the human skeleton excavated in the 2017 season also shows that mortuary activity began early in the site's history, contemporary with domesticated faunal and botanical remains. These initial results indicate the long-term association of the site with pastoralism and agriculture and with environmental change. Jebel Moya's continued potential to serve as a chronological and cultural reference point for future studies in south-central Sudan and the eastern Sahel is reinforced.

A variety of alternative plasmonic and dielectric material platforms-among them nitrides, semiconductors, and conductive oxides-have come to prominence in recent years as means to address the shortcomings of noble metals (including Joule losses, cost, and passive character) in certain nanophotonic and optical-frequency metamaterial applications. Here, it is shown that chalcogenide semiconductor alloys offer a uniquely broad pallet of optical properties, complementary to those of existing material platforms, which can be controlled by stoichiometric design. Using combinatorial high-throughput techniques, the extraordinary epsilon-near-zero, plasmonic, and low/high-index characteristics of Bi:Sb:Te alloys are explored. Depending upon composition they can, for example, have plasmonic figures of merit higher than conductive oxides and nitrides across the entire UV-NIR range, and higher than gold below 550 nm; present dielectric figures of merit better than conductive oxides at near-infrared telecommunications wavelengths; and exhibit record-breaking refractive indices as low as 0.7 and as high as 11.5., (© 2019 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Photonic materials with tunable and switchable ultraviolet (UV) to high-energy visible (HEV) optical properties may benefit applications such as sensing, high-density optical memory, beam-steering, adaptive optics, and light modulation. Here, for the first time we demonstrate a nonvolatile switchable dielectric metamaterial operating in the UV-HEV spectral range. Nanograting metamaterials in a layered composite of low-loss ZnS/SiO 2 and the chalcogenide phase-change medium germanium-antimony-telluride (Ge 2 Sb 2 Te 5 or GST) exhibit reflection resonances at UV-HEV wavelengths that are substantially modified by light-induced (amorphous-crystalline) phase transitions in the chalcogenide layer. Despite the presence of the lossy GST, resonance quality factors up to Q ∼ 15 are ensured by the transparency (low losses) of ZnS/SiO 2 in the UV-HEV spectral range and values of Q increase as the refractive index of Ge 2 Sb 2 Te 5 decreases, upon crystallization. Notably, however, this switching leaves resonance spectral positions unchanged.

Few studies have experimentally manipulated sleep to study its effect on aggressive behavior. The current study examined how reactive aggression was affected by having sleep restricted to 4-hours on a single night, a level of disruption commonly experienced. Both rested and sleep-restricted participants completed the Point Subtraction Aggression Paradigm (PSAP), a laboratory task in which participants seek to earn points, are provoked by a fictitious opponent stealing their points, and may choose to steal points in response. Logistic mixed-effect models were used to investigate the effect of sleep restriction and the role of sex hormones on the odds of choosing to steal. For men, and women in the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle, sleep restriction did not result in significant changes reactive aggression, although the patterns of aggressive behavior appeared less reactive and retaliatory in nature. For women in the follicular phase of the menstrual cycle, sleep restriction was associated with higher levels of reactive aggression. For both men and women in the luteal phase, sleep restriction disrupted an association between hormone change over the task (testosterone and estradiol, respectively) and reactive aggression that was observed in their control participants. In addition, higher testosterone before the PSAP in men was associated with maintaining a high level of stealing over the task. We explored changes in multiscale brain signal complexity and power-law scaling exponents of electroencephalogram (EEG) frequency spectra across several distinct global states of consciousness induced in the natural physiological context of the human sleep cycle. We specifically aimed to link EEG complexity to a statistically unified representation of the neural power spectrum. Further, by utilizing surrogate-based tests of nonlinearity we also examined whether any of the sleep stage-dependent changes in entropy were separable from the linear stochastic effects contained in the power spectrum. Our results indicate that changes of brain signal entropy throughout the sleep cycle are strongly time-scale dependent. Slow wave sleep was characterized by reduced entropy at short time scales and increased entropy at long time scales. Temporal signal complexity (at short time scales) and the slope of EEG power spectra appear, to a large extent, to capture a common phenomenon of neuronal noise, putatively reflecting cortical balance between excitation and inhibition. Electrostriction is a property of all naturally occurring dielectrics whereby they are mechanically deformed under the application of an electric field. It is demonstrated here that an artificial metamaterial nanostructure comprising arrays of dielectric nanowires, made of silicon and indium tin oxide, is reversibly structurally deformed under the application of an electric field, and that this reconfiguration is accompanied by substantial changes in optical transmission and reflection, thus providing a strong electro-optic effect. Such metamaterials can be used as the functional elements of electro-optic modulators in the visible to near-infrared part of the spectrum. A modulator operating at 1550 nm with effective electrostriction and electro-optic coefficients of order 10 -13 m 2 V -2 and 10 -6 m V -1 , respectively, is demonstrated. Transmission changes of up to 3.5% are obtained with a 500 mV control signal at a modulation frequency of ≈6.5 MHz. With a resonant optical response that can be spectrally tuned by design, modulators based on the artificial electrostrictive effect may be used for laser Q-switching and mode-locking among other applications that require modulation at megahertz frequencies., (© 2018 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. An important challenge facing the New Zealand (NZ) dairy industry is development of production systems that can maintain or increase production and profitability, while reducing impacts on receiving environments including water and air. Using research 'farmlets' in Waikato, Canterbury, and Otago (32⁻200 animals per herd), we assessed if system changes aimed at reducing nitrate leaching can also reduce total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (methane and nitrous oxide) and emissions intensity (kg GHG per unit of product) by comparing current and potential 'improved' dairy systems. Annual average GHG emissions for each system were estimated for three or four years using calculations based on the New Zealand Agricultural Inventory Methodology, but included key farmlet-specific emission factors determined from regional experiments. Total annual GHG footprints ranged between 10,800 kg and 20,600 kg CO₂e/ha, with emissions strongly related to the amount of feed eaten. Methane (CH₄) represented 75% to 84% of the total GHG footprint across all modelled systems, with enteric CH₄ from lactating cows grazing pasture being the major source. Excreta deposition onto paddocks was the largest source of nitrous oxide (N₂O) emissions, representing 7⁻12% of the total GHG footprint for all systems. When total emissions were represented on an intensity basis, 'improved' systems are predicted to generally result in lower emissions intensity. The 'improved' systems had lower GHG footprints than the 'current' system, except for one of the 'improved' systems in Canterbury, which had a higher stocking rate. The lower feed supplies and associated lower stocking rates of the 'improved' systems were the key drivers of lower total GHG emissions in all three regions. 'Improved' systems designed to reduced N leaching generally also reduced GHG emissions.

Working memory (WM) is impaired following sleep loss and may be improved after a nap. The goal of the current study was to better understand sleep-related WM enhancement by: (1) employing a WM task that assesses the ability to hold and report visual representations as well as the fidelity of the reports on a fine scale, (2) investigating neurophysiological properties of sleep and WM capacity as potential predictors or moderators of sleep-related enhancement, and (3) exploring frontal and occipital event-related delay activity to index the neural processing of stimuli in WM. In a within-subjects design, 36 young adults (M age = 20, 20 men, 16 women) completed a 300-trial, continuous-report task of visual WM following a 90-min nap opportunity and an equivalent period of wakefulness. Mixed-effect models were used to estimate the odds of successful WM reports and the fidelity of those reports. The odds of a successful report were approximately equal between nap and wake conditions for the start of the task, but by the end, the odds of success were 1.26 times greater in the nap condition. Successful WM reports were more accurate after a nap, independent of the time on task. Neither WM capacity nor any of the sleep variables measured were found to significantly moderate the nap effect on WM. Lastly, napping resulted in amplitude changes for frontal and occipital delay activity relative to the wake condition. The findings are discussed in relation to contemporary models of visual WM and the role of sleep in sustained attention.

Amorphous bismuth telluride (Bi:Te) provides a composition-dependent, CMOS-compatible alternative material platform for plasmonics in the ultraviolet-visible spectral range. Thin films of the chalcogenide semiconductor are found, using high-throughput physical vapor deposition and characterization techniques, to exhibit a plasmonic response (a negative value of the real part of relative permittivity) over a band of wavelengths extending from ~250 nm to between 530 and 978 nm, depending on alloy composition (Bi:Te at% ratio). The plasmonic response is illustrated via the fabrication of subwavelength period nano-grating metasurfaces, which present strong, period-dependent plasmonic absorption resonances in the visible range, manifested in the perceived color of the nanostructured domains in reflection.

Many nanophotonic and nanoelectronic devices contain nanostructures and ultrathin films on the surface of a thick, effectively semi-infinite, substrate. Here we consider a spectroscopic technique based upon coherent illumination, for characterising such samples. The method uses two counter-propagating light beams to generate specific field configurations at the substrate surface plane, which can be modulated, for example, to selectively excite and thereby discriminate between resonant modes of plasmonic nanostructures, or to measure thin films thickness with nanometre resolution. The technique offers a variety of practical applications for the coherent illumination in solid state physics, analytical chemistry, biochemistry, and nano-engineering.

Diamond is introduced as a material platform for visible/near-infrared photonic metamaterials, with a nanostructured polycrystalline diamond metasurface only 170 nm thick providing an experimental demonstration of coherent light-by-light modulation at few-optical-cycle (6 fs) pulse durations. "Coherent control" of absorption in planar (subwavelength-thickness) materials has emerged recently as a mechanism for high-contrast all-optical gating, with a speed of response that is limited only by the spectral width of the absorption line. It is shown here that a free-standing diamond membrane structured by focused ion beam milling can provide strong, spectrally near-flat absorption over a visible to near-infrared wavelength range that is wide enough (wider than is characteristically achievable in plasmonic metal metasurfaces) to facilitate coherent modulation of ultrashort optical pulses comprising only a few oscillations of electromagnetic field., (© 2018 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Incorporating semiconductors as active media into metamaterials offers opportunities for a wide range of dynamically switchable/tunable, technologically relevant optical functionalities enabled by strong, resonant light-matter interactions within the semiconductor. Here, a germanium-thin-film-based flexible metaphotonic device for ultrafast optical switching of terahertz radiation is experimentally demonstrated. A resonant transmission modulation depth of 90% is achieved, with an ultrafast full recovery time of 17 ps. Recently, coherent control of the optical response of thin films in standing waves has attracted considerable attention, ranging from applications in excitation-selective spectroscopy and nonlinear optics to all-optical image processing. Here, we show that integration of metamaterial and optical fibre technologies allows the use of coherently controlled absorption in a fully fiberized and packaged switching metadevice. With this metadevice, which controls light with light in a nanoscale plasmonic metamaterial film on an optical fibre tip, we provide proof-of-principle demonstrations of logical functions XOR, NOT and AND that are performed within a coherent fibre network at wavelengths between 1530 and 1565 nm. The metadevice has been tested at up to 40 gigabits per second and sub-milliwatt power levels. Since coherent absorption can operate at the single-photon level and with 100 THz bandwidth, we argue that the demonstrated all-optical switch concept has potential applications in coherent and quantum information networks.

Recent advances in the physics and technology of light generation via free-electron proximity and impact interactions with nanostructures (gratings, photonic crystals, nano-undulators, metamaterials and antenna arrays) have enabled the development of nanoscale-resolution techniques for such applications as mapping plasmons, studying nanoparticle structural transformations and characterizing luminescent materials (including time-resolved measurements). Here, we introduce a universal approach allowing generation of light with prescribed wavelength, direction, divergence and topological charge via point-excitation of holographic plasmonic metasurfaces. It is illustrated using medium-energy free-electron injection to generate highly-directional visible to near-infrared light beams, at selected wavelengths in prescribed azimuthal and polar directions, with brightness two orders of magnitude higher than that from an unstructured surface, and vortex beams with topological charge up to ten. Such emitters, with micron-scale dimensions and the freedom to fully control radiation parameters, offer novel applications in nano-spectroscopy, nano-chemistry and sensing.

Both sleep and future relevance influence memory consolidation; however, limited research has investigated their role in memory reconsolidation. We manipulated the future relevance of both stable and labile memories in need of reconsolidation. Two groups learned two blocks of syllable pairs on one evening and were told they would be tested on one of the blocks later. On the second evening, one group (Labile) received reminders designed to return their memories of syllable pairs to a labile state, while a second group (Stable) received reminders designed to leave these memories in a stable state. No significant differences in memory retention were found between blocks or groups the following morning. Frontal delta (0.5-4 Hz) electroencephalographic power during Stage 2 sleep correlated positively with retention of future-relevant material exclusively in the Labile group. Central theta (4-8 Hz) electroencephalographic power during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep correlated positively with the extent to which the Labile group selectively retained future-relevant material. We experimentally demonstrate that standing waves formed by two coherent counter-propagating light waves can take a variety of forms, offering new approaches to the interrogation and control of polarization-sensitive light-matter interactions in ultrathin (subwavelength thickness) media. In contrast to familiar energy standing waves, polarization standing waves have constant electric and magnetic energy densities and a periodically varying polarization state along the wave axis. counterintuitively, anisotropic ultrathin (meta)materials can be made sensitive or insensitive to such polarization variations by adjusting their azimuthal angle.

Recent research is beginning to reveal an intricate relationship between sleep and decision-making. The Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) is a unique decision-making task that relies on the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC), an area that integrates and weighs previous experiences with reward and loss to select choices with the highest overall value. Recently, it has been demonstrated that a period of sleep can enhance decision-making on this task. Our study investigated the sleep mechanisms (sleep stages and cortical activity) that underlie this improvement. We recorded electrophysiology for 3 consecutive nights: a habituation, baseline, and acquisition night. On acquisition night participants were administered either a 200-trial IGT (IGT group; n = 13) or a 200-trial control (IGT-control group; n = 8) version of the task prior to sleep. Compared with baseline, the IGT group had a significant increase in theta frequency (4 Hz-8 Hz) on cites located above vmPFC and left prefrontal cortex during REM sleep. This increase correlated with subsequent performance improvement from deck B, a high reward deck with negative long-term outcomes. Furthermore, presleep emotional arousal (measured via skin conductance response) toward deck B correlated to increased theta activity above the right vmPFC during REM sleep. Overall, these results suggests that insight into deck B may be enhanced via vmPFC theta activity during REM sleep and REM sleep may have distinct mechanisms for processing decision-making information. Decreasing hospital length of stay may attenuate costs associated with total knee arthroplasty. The purpose of this study was to determine if updates to an existing orthopedic enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) pathway would improve length of hospitalization. Clinical and demographic data were collected on 252 primary total knee arthroplasties between January 2012 and July 2013. Pre-updated and post-updated ERAS pathway cohorts were analyzed for length of stay, clinical outcomes, and re-admissions. The mean length of stay decreased from 76.6 hours to 56.1 hours after implementation of the evidence-based orthopedic enhanced recovery after surgery pathway (P<0.001). Globally, asthma is a chronic inflammatory respiratory disease affecting over 300 million people. Some asthma patients remain poorly controlled by conventional therapies and experience more life-threatening exacerbations. Vitamin D, as an adjunct therapy, may improve disease control in severe asthma patients since vitamin D enhances glucocorticoid responsiveness and mitigates airway smooth muscle (ASM) hyperplasia. We sought to characterize differences in transcriptome responsiveness to vitamin D between fatal asthma- and non-asthma-derived ASM by using RNA-Seq to measure ASM transcript expression in five donors with fatal asthma and ten non-asthma-derived donors at baseline and with vitamin D treatment. Based on a Benjamini-Hochberg corrected p-value <0.05, 838 genes were differentially expressed in fatal asthma vs. non-asthma-derived ASM at baseline, and vitamin D treatment compared to baseline conditions induced differential expression of 711 and 867 genes in fatal asthma- and non-asthma-derived ASM, respectively. Functional gene categories that were highly represented in all groups included extracellular matrix, and responses to steroid hormone stimuli and wounding. Genes differentially expressed by vitamin D also included cytokine and chemokine activity categories. Follow-up qPCR and individual analyte ELISA experiments were conducted for four cytokines (i.e. CCL2, CCL13, CXCL12, IL8) to measure TNFα-induced changes by asthma status and vitamin D treatment. Vitamin D inhibited TNFα-induced IL8 protein secretion levels to a comparable degree in fatal asthma- and non-asthma-derived ASM even though IL8 had significantly higher baseline levels in fatal asthma-derived ASM. Our findings identify vitamin D-specific gene targets and provide transcriptomic data to explore differences in the ASM of fatal asthma- and non-asthma-derived donors.

The neuromuscular system of helminths controls a variety of essential biological processes and therefore represents a good source of novel drug targets. The neuroactive substance, acetylcholine controls movement of Schistosoma mansoni but the mode of action is poorly understood. Here, we present first evidence of a functional G protein-coupled acetylcholine receptor in S. mansoni, which we have named SmGAR. A bioinformatics analysis indicated that SmGAR belongs to a clade of invertebrate GAR-like receptors and is related to vertebrate muscarinic acetylcholine receptors. Functional expression studies in yeast showed that SmGAR is constitutively active but can be further activated by acetylcholine and, to a lesser extent, the cholinergic agonist, carbachol. Anti-cholinergic drugs, atropine and promethazine, were found to have inverse agonist activity towards SmGAR, causing a significant decrease in the receptor's basal activity. An RNAi phenotypic assay revealed that suppression of SmGAR activity in early-stage larval schistosomulae leads to a drastic reduction in larval motility. In sum, our results provide the first molecular evidence that cholinergic GAR-like receptors are present in schistosomes and are required for proper motor control in the larvae. Background: Patients often receive advanced imaging before referral to an orthopaedic oncologist. The few studies that have evaluated the value of these tests have been single-center studies, and there were large discrepancies in the estimated frequencies of unnecessary use of diagnostic tests., Questions/purposes: (1) Is there regional variation in the use of advanced imaging before referral to an orthopaedic oncologist? (2) Are these prereferral studies helpful to the treating orthopaedic oncologist in making a diagnosis or treatment plan? (3) Are orthopaedic surgeons less likely to order unhelpful studies than other specialties? (4) Are there any tumor or patient characteristics that are associated with the ordering of an unhelpful study?, Methods: We performed an eight-center prospective analysis of patients referred for evaluation by a fellowship-trained orthopaedic oncologist. We recorded patient factors, referral details, advanced imaging performed, and presumptive diagnosis. The treating orthopaedic oncologist determined whether each study was helpful in the diagnosis or treatment of the patient based on objective and subjective criteria used in prior investigations. We analyzed the data using bivariate methods and logistic regression to determine regional variation and risk factors predictive of unhelpful advanced imaging. Of the 371 participants available for analysis, 301 (81%) were referred with an MRI, CT scan, bone scan, ultrasound, or positron emission tomography scan., Results: There were no regional differences in the use of advanced imaging (range of patients presenting with advanced imaging 66%-88% across centers, p = 0.164). One hundred thirteen patients (30%) had at least one unhelpful study; non-MRI advanced imaging was more likely to be unhelpful than MRIs (88 of 129 [68%] non-MRI imaging versus 46 of 263 [17%] MRIs [p < 0.001]). Orthopaedic surgeons were no less likely than nonorthopaedic surgeons to order unhelpful studies before referral to an orthopaedic oncologist (56 of 179 [31%] of patients referred by orthopaedic surgeons versus 35 of 119 [29%] referred by primary care providers and 22 of 73 [30%] referred by nonorthopaedic specialists, p = 0.940). After controlling for potential confounding variables, benign bone lesions had an increased odds of referral with an unhelpful study (59 of 145 [41%] of benign bone tumors versus 54 of 226 [24%] of soft tissue tumors and malignant bone tumors; odds ratio, 2.80; 95% confidence interval, 1.68-4.69, p < 0.001)., Conclusions: We found no evidence that the proportion of patients referred with advanced imaging varied dramatically by region. Studies other than MRI were likely to be considered unhelpful and should not be routinely ordered by referring physicians. Diligent education of orthopaedic surgeons and primary care physicians in the judicious use of advanced imaging in benign bone tumors may help mitigate unnecessary imaging., Level of Evidence: Level III, diagnostic study. It was recently demonstrated that the well-known Snell's law must be corrected for phase gradient metasurfaces to account for their spatially varying phase, leading to normal and anomalous transmission and reflection of light on such metasurfaces. Here we show that the efficiency of normal and anomalous transmission and reflection of light can be controlled by the intensity or phase of a second coherent wave. The phenomenon is illustrated using gradient metasurfaces based on V-shaped and rectangular apertures in a metal film. This coherent control effect can be exploited for wave front shaping and signal routing.

We demonstrate that resonant optical forces generated within all-dielectric planar photonic metamaterials at near-infrared illumination wavelengths can be an order of magnitude larger than in corresponding plasmonic metamaterials, reaching levels many tens of times greater than the force resulting from radiation pressure. This is made possible by the dielectric structures' freedom from Joule losses and the consequent ability to sustain Fano-resonances with high quality factors that are unachievable in plasmonic nanostructures. Dielectric nano-optomechanical metamaterials can thus provide a functional platform for a range of novel dynamically controlled and self-adaptive nonlinear, tunable/switchable photonic metamaterials.

Domain-general mechanisms are evolutionarily ancient, resulting from the evolution of affective cues signaling the attainment of evolutionary goals. Explicit processing is a particularly important set of domain-general mechanisms for constructing human groups - enabling ideologies specifying future goal states and rationalizing group aims, enabling knowledge of others' reputations essential to cooperation, understanding the rights and obligations of group membership, monitoring group members, and providing appropriate punishments to those who deviate from group aims.

Acetylcholine is the canonical excitatory neurotransmitter of the mammalian neuromuscular system. However, in the trematode parasite Schistosoma mansoni, cholinergic stimulation leads to muscle relaxation and a flaccid paralysis, suggesting an inhibitory mode of action. Information about the pharmacological mechanism of this inhibition is lacking. Here, we used a combination of techniques to assess the role of cholinergic receptors in schistosome motor function. The neuromuscular effects of acetylcholine are typically mediated by gated cation channels of the nicotinic receptor (nAChR) family. Bioinformatics analyses identified numerous nAChR subunits in the S. mansoni genome but, interestingly, nearly half of these subunits carried a motif normally associated with chloride-selectivity. These putative schistosome acetylcholine-gated chloride channels (SmACCs) are evolutionarily divergent from those of nematodes and form a unique clade within the larger family of nAChRs. Pharmacological and RNA interference (RNAi) behavioral screens were used to assess the role of the SmACCs in larval motor function. Treatment with antagonists produced the same effect as RNAi suppression of SmACCs; both led to a hypermotile phenotype consistent with abrogation of an inhibitory neuromuscular mediator. Antibodies were then generated against two of the SmACCs for use in immunolocalization studies. SmACC-1 and SmACC-2 localize to regions of the peripheral nervous system that innervate the body wall muscles, yet neither appears to be expressed directly on the musculature. One gene, SmACC-1, was expressed in HEK-293 cells and characterized using an iodide flux assay. The results indicate that SmACC-1 formed a functional homomeric chloride channel and was activated selectively by a panel of cholinergic agonists. The results described in this study identify a novel clade of nicotinic chloride channels that act as inhibitory modulators of schistosome neuromuscular function. Additionally, the iodide flux assay used to characterize SmACC-1 represents a new high-throughput tool for drug screening against these unique parasite ion channels.

The idea that structured organization of differentiated individuals influences group behavior is not new to evolutionary approaches. An adequate theory of groups needs to incorporate explicit processing, which is central to means-end reasoning involved in leadership and to the construction of ideologies that rationalize group structure. Explicit processing is also central to knowledge of others' reputations, thus enabling altruistic cooperation.

Optical responses in conventional metamaterials based on plasmonic metal nanostructures are inevitably accompanied by Joule losses, which obstruct practical applications by limiting resonance quality factors and compromising the efficiency of metamaterial devices. Here we experimentally demonstrate a fully-dielectric metamaterial that exhibits a 'trapped mode' resonance at optical frequencies, founded upon the excitation by incident light of anti-parallel displacement currents in meta-molecules comprising pairs of parallel, geometrically dissimilar dielectric nano-bars. The phenomenon is demonstrated in the near-infrared part of the spectrum using silicon, showing that in principle strong, lossless resonant responses are possible anywhere in the optical spectral range.

The objective of this study was to determine the effect of cow genetic strain on fatty acid (FA) profiles in adipose tissue and milk. Adipose samples from two subcutaneous (shoulder and tail-head) and three visceral (kidney channel, mesenteric and omental) depots were obtained post mortem from New Zealand (NZ; n = 8) and North American (NA; n = 8) Holstein-Friesian cows. At the time of slaughter cows were in similar body condition (NZ: 4.0 ± 0.03, NA: 4.0 ± 0.02; ± SD) and stage of lactation (NZ: 90 ± 11.2 d; NA: 83 ± 4.3 d; ± SD). Milk was collected during the a.m. milking prior to slaughter and milk fat was extracted. Adipose and milk fat FA were quantified using gas chromatography. NZ cows had a lower proportion of saturated FA in shoulder, tail-head and omental adipose tissue and a greater proportion of mono-unsaturated FA and an elevated Δ9-desaturase index in shoulder and tail-head adipose tissue. The proportions of individual FA differed between adipose depots, with proportions of de-novo FA greater in subcutaneous compared with visceral adipose depots. Milk from NZ cows contained greater concentrations of short chain FA (C8 : 0-12 : 0) and CLA, and less cis-9 18 : 1 than milk from NA cows. Regression analysis identified moderate associations between milk FA and shoulder adipose tissue FA for 18 : 2 (R(2) = 0.24), 18 : 3 n - 3 (R(2) = 0.39), and polyunsaturated fatty acids (R(2) = 0.38). Results from this study support the hypothesis that genetic strain dictates FA profiles in adipose tissue and milk and may alter the metabolic status of the various adipose depots differently. The data further support the premise that genetic strain affects the metabolic status of the various adipose depots differently. Elucidating the mechanisms that regulate the different adipose depots in the NZ and NA strains will increase our understanding of tissue mobilization and replenishment.

Tracking the progress of pre-registration nursing students' medication dosage calculation problem-solving (MDC-PS) competence development is critical both to ensure achievement of professional and regulatory requirements and to evaluate the validity and reliability of nursing education preparation programmes. This paper focuses on the outcomes of a three-year professional healthcare education evaluation study that tracked the progress of 210 nursing students following the foundation programme and child, adult, mental health and learning disability branch programmes of a UK undergraduate pre-registration nursing degree programme. Animal growth relative to food energy input is of key importance to agricultural production. Several recent studies highlighted genetic markers associated with food conversion efficiency in beef cattle, and there is now a requirement to validate these associations in additional populations and to assess their potential utility for selecting animals with enhanced food-use efficiency. The current analysis tested a population of dairy cattle using 138 DNA markers previously associated with food intake and growth in a whole-genome association analysis of beef animals. Although seven markers showed point-wise significance at P < 0.05, none of the single-nucleotide polymorphisms tested were significantly associated with food conversion efficiency after correction for multiple testing.
