Metamaterials are emerging as an unconventional platform to perform computing abstractions in physical systems by processing environmental stimuli into information. While computation functions have been demonstrated in mechanical systems, they rely on compliant mechanisms to achieve predefined states, which impose inherent design restrictions that limit their miniaturization, deployment, reconfigurability, and functionality. Here, a metamaterial system is described based on responsive magnetoactive Janus particle (MAJP) swarms with multiple programmable functions. MAJPs are designed with tunable structure and properties in mind, that is, encoded swarming behavior and fully reversible switching mechanisms, to enable programmable dynamic display, non-volatile and semi-volatile memory, Boolean logic, and information encryption functions in soft, wearable devices. MAJPs and their unique swarming behavior open new functions for the design of multifunctional and reconfigurable display devices, and constitute a promising building block to develop the next generation of soft physical computing devices, with growing applications in security, defense, anti-counterfeiting, camouflage, soft robotics, and human-robot interaction., (© 2024 The Author(s). VO 2 is a promising phase change material offering a large contrast of electric, thermal, and optical properties when transitioning from semiconductor to metallic phase. Here we show that a hybrid metamaterial obtained by proper combination of a VO 2 layer and a nanodisk gold array provides a tunable plasmonic gap resonance in the infrared range. Specifically, we have designed and fabricated a metal-insulator-metal gap resonance by inserting sub-wavelength VO 2 film between a flat gold layer and a gold nanodisk resonator array. The resonance of the hybrid metamaterial is centered in the useful 3-5 μm range when VO 2 is in its semiconductor state. The experimental study highlights a monotonical spectral tuning of the resonance when increasing temperature up to 50 °C above the room temperature, providing a continuous resonance shift of almost 1 μm in the mid-infrared range. Triply periodic minimal surfaces (TPMSs) constitute a type of metamaterial, deriving their unique characteristics from their microstructure topology. They exhibit wide parameterization possibilities, but their behavior is hard to predict. This study focuses on using an implicit modeling method that can effectively generate novel thin-walled metamaterials, proposing eight shell-based TPMS topologies and one stochastic structure, along with the gyroid acting as a reference. After insights into the printability and design parameters of the proposed samples are presented, a cell homogeneity analysis is conducted, indicating the level of anisotropy of each cellular structure. For each of the designed metamaterials, multiple samples were printed using a stereolithography (SLA) method, using a constant 0.3 relative density and 50 µm resolution. To provide an understanding of their behavior, compression tests of sandwich-type specimens were performed and specific deformation modes were identified. Furthermore, the study estimates the general mechanical behavior of the novel TPMS cores at different relative densities using an open cell mathematical model. Alterations of the uniform topologies are then suggested and the way these modifications affect the compressive response are presented. Thus, this paper demonstrates that an implicit modeling method could easily generate novel thin-walled TPMSs and stochastic structures, which led to identifying an artificially designed structure with superior properties to already mature topologies, such as the gyroid.

Mechanical metamaterials achieve unprecedented mechanical properties through their periodically interconnected unit cell structure. However, their geometrical design and resulting mechanical properties are typically fixed during fabrication. Despite efforts to implement covalent adaptable networks (CANs) into metamaterials for permanent shape reconfigurability, emphasis is given to global rather than local shape reconfiguration. Furthermore, the change of effective material properties like Poisson's ratio remains to be explored. In this work, a non-isocyanate polyurethane elastomeric CAN, which can be thermally reconfigured, is introduced into a metamaterial architecture. Structural reconfiguration allows for the local and global reprogramming of the Poisson's ratio with change of unit cell angle from 60° to 90° for the auxetic and 120° to 90° for the honeycomb metamaterial. The respective Poisson's ratio changes from -1.4 up to -0.4 for the auxetic and from +0.7 to +0.2 for the honeycomb metamaterial. Carbon nanotubes are deposited on the metamaterials to enable global and spatial electrothermal heating for on-demand reshaping with a heterogeneous Poisson's ratio ranging from -2 to ≈0 for a single auxetic or +0.6 to ≈0 for a single honeycomb metamaterial. Anti-icing and de-icing are vital for infrastructure maintenance. While carbon-based materials with photothermal or electrothermal effects have advanced, they face challenges like environmental dependence, poor resistance, high energy consumption, and complex manufacturing. Here, we developed a scalable, hybrid metamaterial driven by photothermal/electrothermal for all-weather anti-icing/de-icing. Its nanostructured surface delays icing by 360 s at -30°C, breaking records across a wide temperature range. The porous structure enhances light absorption, achieving a delayed icing time of 2500 s at -20°C under one sunlight. The graphene film's high conductivity allows rapid de-icing with 1.6W power. After 720 h of outdoor exposure, the metamaterial retained a contact angle above 150°, confirming durability. More critically, we have demonstrated that the metamaterial can be manufactured on a large scale, which is essential for improving the economics of the anti-icing/de-icing sector., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest., (© 2024 The Author(s).)

For this article, a low-cost, compact, and flexible inkjet-printed electromagnetic sensor was investigated for its chemical and biomedical applications. The investigated sensor design was used to estimate variations in the concentration of chemicals (ethanol and methanol) and biochemicals (hydrocortisone-a chemical derivative of cortisol, a biomarker of stress and cardiovascular effects). The proposed design's sensitivity was further improved by carefully choosing the frequency range (0.5-4 GHz), so that the analyzed samples showed approximately linear variations in their dielectric properties. The dielectric properties were measured using a vector network analyzer (VNA) and an Agilent 85070E Dielectric Probe Kit. The sensor design had a resonant frequency at 2.2 GHz when investigated without samples, and a consistent shift in resonant frequency was observed, with variation in the concentrations of the investigated chemicals. The sensitivity of the designed sensor is decent and is comparable to its non-flexible counterparts. Furthermore, the simulation and measured results were in agreement and were comparable to similar investigated sensor prototypes based on non-flexible Rogers substrates (Rogers RO4003C) and Rogers Droid/RT 5880), demonstrating true potential for chemical, biomedical applications, and healthcare.

We present a sensor that utilizes a modified single-frequency split beam metasurface reflector to measure the refractive index of materials ranging from one to three. Samples are placed into a cavity between a PCB-etched dielectric and a reflecting ground plane. It is illuminated using a 10.525 GHz free-space transmit horn with reflecting angles measured by sweeping a receiving horn around the setup. Predetermined changes in measured angles determined through simulations will coincide with the material's index. The sensor is designed using the Fourier transform method of array synthesis and verified with FEM simulations. The device is fabricated using PCB milling and 3D printing. The quality of the sensor is verified by characterizing 3D printed dielectric samples of various infill percentages and thicknesses. Without changing the metasurface design, the sensing performance is extended to accommodate larger sample thicknesses by including a modified 3D printed fish-eye lens mounted in front of the beam splitter; this helps to exaggerate changes in reflected angles for those samples. All the methods presented are in agreement and verified with single-frequency index measurements using Snell's law. This device may offer a viable alternative to traditional index characterization methods, which often require large sample sizes for single-frequency measurements or expensive equipment for multi-frequency parameter extraction.

The bar and hinge framework uses truss elements and rotational springs to efficiently model the structural behaviour of origami. The framework is especially useful to investigate origami metamaterials as they have repeating geometry, which makes conventional finite element simulations very expensive due to a large number of degrees of freedom. This work proposes improvements to the parameters of bar and hinge model within the context of structural dynamics, specifically modal analysis under small deformations, which has not been carried out previously in the literature. A range of low-frequency modes involving origami folding and panel bending deformations that can be accurately captured by the bar and hinge framework are identified. Within this range, bar and hinge parameters like the lumped masses and the rotational spring stiffness values are derived using conservation laws and finite element tests. The best among the proposed schemes is found to predict natural frequencies of the considered origami structures to within 10% maximum error, improving the accuracy by more than three times from existing schemes. Mechanical metamaterials are rationally designed structures engineered to exhibit extraordinary properties, often surpassing those of their constituent materials. The geometry of metamaterials' building blocks, referred to as unit cells, plays an essential role in determining their macroscopic mechanical behavior. Due to their hierarchical design and remarkable properties, metamaterials hold significant potential for tissue engineering; however their implementation in the field remains limited. The major challenge hindering the broader use of metamaterials lies in the complexity of unit cell design and fabrication. To address this gap, a comprehensive guide is presented detailing the design principles of well-established metamaterials. The essential unit cell geometric parameters and design constraints, as well as their influence on mechanical behavior, are summarized highlighting essential points for effective fabrication. Moreover, the potential integration of artificial intelligence techniques is explored in meta-biomaterial design for patient- and application-specific design. Furthermore, a comprehensive overview of current applications of mechanical metamaterials is provided in tissue engineering, categorized by tissue type, thereby showcasing the versatility of different designs in matching the mechanical properties of the target tissue. Quasi-3D plasmonic nanostructures are in high demand for their ability to manipulate and enhance light-matter interactions at subwavelength scales, making them promising building blocks for diverse nanophotonic devices. Despite their potential, the integration of these nanostructures with optical sensors and imaging systems on a large scale poses challenges. Here, a robust technique for the rapid, scalable, and seamless replication of quasi-3D plasmonic nanostructures is presented straight from their production wafers using a microbubble process. This approach not only simplifies the integration of quasi-3D plasmonic nanostructures into a wide range of standard and custom optical imaging devices and sensors but also significantly enhances their imaging and sensing performance beyond the limits of conventional methods. This study encompasses experimental, computational, and theoretical investigations, and it fully elucidates the operational mechanism. Recent advancements in optical metamaterials have opened new possibilities in the exciting field of super-resolution microscopies. The far-field metamaterial-assisted illumination nanoscopies (MAINs) have, very recently, enhanced the lateral resolution to one-fifteenth of the optical wavelength. However, the axial localization accuracy of fluorophores in the MAINs remains rarely explored. Here, a MAIN with a nanometer-scale axial localization accuracy is demonstrated by monitoring the distance-dependent photobleaching dynamics of the fluorophores on top of an organic hyperbolic metamaterial (OHM) substrate under a wide-field single-objective microscope. With such a regular experimental configuration, 3D imaging of various biological samples with the resolution of ≈40 nm in the lateral dimensions and ≈5 nm in the axial dimension is realized. Mechanical metamaterials with multi-level dynamic crushing effects (MM-MLs) are designed in this study through coordinate transformation and mirror arrays. The mechanical effects of the diameter and length ratio of the struts and connecting rods, the Euler angles, and the cell numbers on the mechanical properties are investigated separately. MM-ML can exhibit significant two-level platform stress, and the local cells in the first platform stress stage undergo rotational motion, while the second platform stress stage mainly involves collapse compression and bending. Although increasing the length of the connecting rods can increase the range of Poisson's ratio, it will reduce the level of platform stress and energy absorption. Increasing the Euler angle will reduce the strain interval of the first platform stress and can improve the energy absorption capacity. In addition, increasing the cell number while maintaining a constant relative density can effectively enhance energy absorption. MM-ML has significant parameter controllability, can achieve different platform stress regions, different ranges of Poisson's ratios, and energy absorption requirements according to the application scenario, and can demonstrate functional diversity compared to existing research. Silicon photonic index sensors have received significant attention for label-free bio and gas-sensing applications, offering cost-effective and scalable solutions. Here, we introduce an ultra-compact silicon photonic refractive index sensor that leverages zero-crosstalk singularity responses enabled by subwavelength gratings. The subwavelength gratings are precisely engineered to achieve an anisotropic perturbation-led zero-crosstalk, resulting in a single transmission dip singularity in the spectrum that is independent of device length. The sensor is optimized for the transverse magnetic mode operation, where the subwavelength gratings are arranged perpendicular to the propagation direction to support a leaky-like mode and maximize the evanescent field interaction with the analyte space. Experimental results demonstrate a high wavelength sensitivity of - 410 nm/RIU and an intensity sensitivity of 395 dB/RIU, with a compact device footprint of approximately 82.8 μm 2 . Distinct from other resonant and interferometric sensors, our approach provides an FSR-free single-dip spectral response on a small device footprint, overcoming common challenges faced by traditional sensors, such as signal/phase ambiguity, sensitivity fading, limited detection range, and the necessity for large device footprints. This makes our sensor ideal for simplified intensity interrogation. In this study, we evaluated the surface plasmon characteristics of periodic silver nanodisk structures fabricated on a dielectric thin-film spacer layer on a Ag mirror substrate (NanoDisk on Mirror: NDoM) through finite difference time domain (FDTD) simulations and experiments involving actual sample fabrication. Through FDTD simulations, it was confirmed that the NDoM structure exhibits two sharp peaks in the visible range, and by adjusting the thickness of the spacer layer and the size of the nanodisk structure, sharp peaks can be obtained across the entire visible range. Additionally, we fabricated the NDoM structure using electron beam lithography (EBL) and experimentally confirmed that the obtained peaks matched the simulation results. Furthermore, we discovered that applying annealing at an appropriate temperature to the fabricated structure enables the adjustment of the resonance peak wavelength and enhances the scattering intensity by approximately five times. This enhancement is believed to result from changes in the shape and size of the nanodisk structure, as well as a reduction in grain boundaries in the metal crystal due to annealing. These results have the potential to contribute to technological advancements in various application fields, such as optical sensing and emission enhancement.

This paper presents a study of wave propagation through an infinite periodic structure that consists of elastic Timoshenko beams interconnected with rigid bodies. This is a generalized approach in which the beams are not coaxial and the centre of mass of each rigid body is placed away from the intersection of their neutral axes. An analytical approach is used by applying the transfer matrix method (TMM), along with the Floquet-Bloch theorem for elastic wave propagation. Subsequent parametric analysis is performed with visualization of resulting band diagrams of a representative structure. These results are verified through comparison with solutions obtained using the finite-element method (FEM). The introduction of metamaterials has provided new possibilities to manipulate the propagation of waves in different fields of physics, ranging from electromagnetism to acoustics. However, despite the variety of configurations proposed so far, most solutions lack dynamic tunability, i.e. their functionality cannot be altered post-fabrication. Our work overcomes this limitation by employing a photo-responsive polymer to fabricate a simple metamaterial structure and enable tuning of its elastic properties using visible light. The structure of the metamaterial consists of graded resonators in the form of an array of pillars, each giving rise to different resonances and transmission band gaps. Selective laser illumination can then tune the resonances and their frequencies individually or collectively, thus yielding many degrees of freedom in the tunability of the filtered or transmitted wave frequencies, similar to playing a keyboard, where illuminating each pillar corresponds to playing a different note. Simple, instantaneous, contactless, multiple-point metamaterial-inspired microwave sensors, composed of multi-band, low-profile metamaterial-inspired antennas, were developed to detect and identify meningioma tumors, the most common primary brain tumors. Based on a typical meningioma tumor size of 5-20 mm, a higher operating frequency, where the wavelength is similar or smaller than the tumor target, is crucial. The sensors, designed for the microwave Ku band range (12-18 GHz), where the electromagnetic property values of tumors are available, were implemented in this study. A seven-layered head phantom, including the meningioma tumors, was defined using actual electromagnetic parametric values in the frequency range of interest to mimic the actual human head. The reflection coefficients can be recorded and analyzed instantaneously, reducing high electromagnetic radiation consumption. It has been shown that a single-band detection point is not adequate to classify the nonlinear tumor and head model parameters. On the other hand, dual-band and tri-band metamaterial-inspired antennas, with additional detecting points, create a continuous function solution for the nonlinear problem by adding extra observation points using multiple-band excitation. The point mapping values can be used to enhance the tumor detection capability. Two-point mapping showed a consistent trend between the S 11 value order and the tumor size, while three-point mapping can also be used to demonstrate the correlation between the S 11 value order and the tumor size. This proposed multi-detection point technique can be applied to a sensor for other nonlinear property targets. Moreover, a set of antennas with different polarizations, orientations, and arrangements in a network could help to obtain the highest sensitivity and accuracy of the whole system.

The unique properties of metamaterials are determined by the configuration and spatial arrangement of artificially designed unit structures. However, the configuration and mechanical properties of conventional metamaterials are challenging to reverse and adjust. Based on curved beams, two types of novel three-dimensional (3D) multi-stable metamaterials with reconfigurable deformation and tunable mechanical properties are designed and fabricated using a four-dimensional (4D) printing method. The effects of temperature and curved-beam thickness on the force-displacement curves and multi-stable snapping sequence of the 3D multi-stable metamaterials are investigated by finite-element analysis (FEA) and experiments. In addition, based on the designed four-branch multi-stable metamaterials, three- and six-branched multi-stable structures are designed by changing the number of curved-beam branches. It is shown that, owing to shape memory effects, the 3D multi-stable metamaterials can realize mechanical programmability, and the multi-stable deformation sequence can be precisely regulated by varying the temperature and curved-beam thickness. These 4D-printed multi-stable metamaterials provide valuable contributions to the design of programmable multi-stable metamaterials and their applications in soft robots and intelligent structures. In this work, we propose elastic metamaterials with phase discontinuities to steer the propagation of near-source bulk waves in a semi-infinite elastic medium. Our design exploits an array of embedded subwavelength resonators with tailored masses to attain a complete phase shift spanning [Formula: see text]. This phase control allows for diverse wave functionalities, such as directional refraction and energy focusing. Through the use of dispersion diagrams and the generalized Snell's law, along with a multiple scattering formulation, we analytically demonstrate the effectiveness of our design in achieving the desired wavefront manipulation. The proposed design has the potential to advance the field of guiding elastic waves using metamaterials and find practical applications in areas such as isolating ground-borne vibrations in densely urbanized regions and energy harvesting. Heat flux concentrators have important potential applications in thermoelectric generators. In this study, we demonstrated the heat flux concentration characteristic in nanophononic metamaterials using molecular dynamics simulations. The ratio of heat flux (RHF) is used to evaluate the concentration performance, the RHF can reach 1.62. The performance is optimized by varying the height of the nanopillar and the atomic mass of the atoms in the nanopillar. Increasing the atomic mass of the atoms in the nanopillars yields better performance. We found that the main mechanism for concentration is phonon localization in the nanopillar region. Furthermore, when the distance from the surface increases, the low-frequency peak of phonon density of states (PDOS) decreases, the high-frequency peak increases, and the mode participation rate (MPR) transforms from localized to delocalized. Introduction: The use of three-dimensional (3D) printed anatomic models is steadily increasing in research and as a tool for clinical decision-making. The mechanical properties of polymers and metamaterials were investigated to evaluate their application in mimicking the biomechanics of the aortic vessel wall., Methodology: Uniaxial tensile tests were performed to determine the elastic modulus, mechanical stress, and strain of 3D printed samples. We used a combination of materials, designed to mimic biological tissues' properties, the rigid Vero TM family, and the flexible Agilus30™. Metamaterials were designed by tessellating unit cells that were used as lattice-reinforcement to tune their mechanical properties. The lattice-reinforcements were based on two groups of patterns, mainly responding to the movement between links/threads (chain and knitted) or to deformation (origami and diamond crystal). The mechanical properties of the printed materials were compared with the characteristics of healthy and aneurysmal aortas., Results: Uniaxial tensile tests showed that the use of a lattice-reinforcement increased rigidity and may increase the maximum stress generated. The pattern and material of the lattice-reinforcement may increase or reduce the strain at maximum stress, which is also affected by the base material used. Printed samples showed max stress ranging from 0.39 ± 0.01 MPa to 0.88 ± 0.02 MPa, and strain at max stress ranging from 70.44 ± 0.86% to 158.21 ± 8.99%. An example of an application was created by inserting a metamaterial designed as a lattice-reinforcement on a model of the aorta to simulate an abdominal aortic aneurysm., Conclusion: The maximum stresses obtained with the printed models were similar to those of aortic tissue reported in the literature, despite the fact that the models did not perfectly reproduce the biological tissue behavior., (© 2024. Phonon polaritons, the hybrid quasiparticles resulting from the coupling of photons and lattice vibrations, have gained significant attention in the field of layered van der Waals heterostructures. Particular interest has been paid to hetero-bicrystals composed of molybdenum oxide (MoO 3 ) and hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), which feature polariton dispersion tailorable via avoided polariton mode crossings. In this work, the polariton eigenmodes in MoO 3 -hBN hetero-bicrystals self-assembled on ultrasmooth gold are systematically studied using synchrotron infrared nanospectroscopy. It is experimentally demonstrated that the spectral gap in bicrystal dispersion and corresponding regimes of negative refraction can be tuned by material layer thickness, and these results are quantitatively matched with a simple analytic model. Polaritonic cavity modes and polariton propagation along "forbidden" directions are also investigated in microscale bicrystals, which arise from the finite in-plane dimension of the synthesized MoO 3 micro-ribbons. Wireless energy transfer (WET) based on ultrasound-driven generators with enormous beneficial functions, is technologically in progress by the valuation of ultrasonic metamaterials (UMMs) in science and engineering domains. Indeed, novel metamaterial structures can develop the efficiency of mechanical and physical features of ultrasound energy receivers (US-ETs), including ultrasound-driven piezoelectric and triboelectric nanogenerators (US-PENGs and US-TENGs) for advantageous applications. This review article first summarizes the fundamentals, classification, and design engineering of UMMs after introducing ultrasound energy for WET technology. In addition to addressing using UMMs, the topical progress of innovative UMMs in US-ETs is conceptually presented. Moreover, the advanced approaches of metamaterials are reported in the categorized applications of US-PENGs and US-TENGs. Finally, some current perspectives and encounters of UMMs in US-ETs are offered. Additively manufactured metamaterials are architectured cellular materials that can be engineered through structural innovations to achieve unusual mechanical and multifunctional properties. Among these, hollow-strut lattice (HSL) metamaterials have proven to allow outstanding structural efficiency, with a multifunctional architecture ideal for lightweight, biomedical, microfluidic, and thermal engineering. To capitalize on their structural efficiency and significantly extend their mechanical envelope, a thin-plate lattice topology is seamlessly integrated into the inner hollow space of an HSL topology. This integration serves a dual purpose: to radically enhance the resistance of the irregular HSL nodes to deformation and to uniformly distribute the applied stresses in the new topology for unparalleled strength. Fabricated in titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V with densities of 1.0-1.8 g cm -3 , this thin-plate integrated hollow-strut lattice (TP-HSL) metamaterials achieve relative yield strength that well surpasses the empirical upper limit of all cellular metals, including HSL and solid-strut lattice (SSL) metamaterials made from various metallic alloys. Furthermore, their absolute yield strength drastically exceeds that of magnesium alloys with comparable densities while inheriting the high corrosion resistance, biocompatibility, heat resistance, and other unique attributes of Ti-6Al-4V. This is a report on a pilot study that tests the feasibility of assembling photonic metamaterials (PMs) using light gradient forces. Following a strategy that works like modular construction, light gradient forces, produced by a tightly focused, 1D standing wave optical trap, time-multiplexed across a 2D lattice are used to assemble voxels consisting of prefabricated, monodispersed nanoparticles (NPs) with radii ranging from 30 to 500 nm into 3D structures on a hydrogel scaffold. Hundreds of NPs can be manipulated concurrently into a complex heterogeneous voxel this way, and then the process can be repeated by stitching together voxels to form a metamaterial of any size, shape, and constituency although imperfectly. Imperfections introduce random phase shifts and amplitude variations that can have an adverse effect on the band structure. Regardless, PMs are created this way using two different dielectric NPs, polystyrene and rutile, and then the near-infrared performance for each is analyzed with angle-, wavelength-, and polarization-dependent reflection spectroscopy. The cross-polarized spectra show evidence of a resonance peak. Interestingly, whereas the line shape from the polystyrene array is symmetric, the rutile array is not, which may be indicative of Fano resonance. Chirality, the lack of mirror symmetry, can be mimicked in nanophotonics and plasmonics by breaking the symmetry in light-nanostructure interaction. Here we report on versatile use of nanosphere lithography for the fabrication of low-cost metasurfaces, which exhibit broadband handedness- and angle-dependent extinction in the near-infrared range, thus offering extrinsic chiro-optical behavior. We measure wavelength and angle dependence of the extinction for four samples. Two samples are made of polystyrene nanospheres asymmetrically covered by silver and gold in one case and silver only in the other case, with a nanohole array at the bottom. The other two samples are nanohole arrays, obtained after the nanosphere removal from the first two samples. Rich extrinsic chiral features are governed by different chiro-optical mechanisms in the three-dimensional plasmonic semi-shells and planar nanohole arrays. We also measure Stokes parameters in the same wavelength and incidence angle range and show that the transmitted fields follow the extrinsic chirality features of the extinction dissymmetry. We further study the influences of the nanostructured shapes and in-plane orientations on the intrinsic vs extrinsic chirality. The nanoholes are modelled as oval shapes in metal, showing good agreement with the experiments. We thus confirm that nanosphere lithography can provide different geometries for chiral light manipulation at the nanoscale, with the possibility to extend functionalities with optimized oval shapes and combination of constituent metals., (© 2024. In this work high-frequency magnetization dynamics and statics of artificial spin-ice lattices with different geometric nanostructure array configurations are studied where the individual nanostructures are composed of ferromagnetic/non-magnetic/ferromagnetic trilayers with different non-magnetic thicknesses. These thickness variations enable additional control over the magnetic interactions within the spin-ice lattice that directly impacts the resulting magnetization dynamics and the associated magnonic modes. Specifically the geometric arrangements studied are square, kagome and trigonal spin ice configurations, where the individual lithographically patterned nanomagnets (NMs) are trilayers, made up of two magnetic layers ofNi81Fe19of 30 nm and 70 nm thickness respectively, separated by a non-magnetic copper layer of either 2 nm or 40 nm. We show that coupling via the magnetostatic interactions between the ferromagnetic layers of the NMs within square, kagome and trigonal spin-ice lattices offers fine-control over magnetization states and magnetic resonant modes. In particular, the kagome and trigonal lattices allow tuning of an additional mode and the spacing between multiple resonance modes, increasing functionality beyond square lattices. These results demonstrate the ability to move beyond quasi-2D single magnetic layer nanomagnetics via control of the vertical interlayer interactions in spin ice arrays. Metamaterials, characterized by unique structures, exhibit exceptional properties applicable across various domains. Traditional methods like experiments and finite-element methods (FEM) have been extensively utilized to characterize these properties. However, exploring an extensive range of structures using these methods for designing desired structures with excellent properties can be time-intensive. This paper formulates a machine-learning-based approach to expedite predicting effective metamaterial properties, leading to the discovery of microstructures with diverse and outstanding characteristics. The process involves constructing 2D and 3D microstructures, encompassing porous materials, solid-solid-based materials, and fluid-solid-based materials. Finite-element methods are then employed to determine the effective properties of metamaterials. Subsequently, the Random Forest (RF) algorithm is applied for training and predicting effective properties. Additionally, the Aquila Optimizer (AO) method is employed for a multiple optimization task in inverse design. The regression model generates accurate estimation with a coefficient of determination higher than 0.98, a mean absolute percentage error lower than 0.088, and a root mean square error lower than 0.03, indicating that the machine-learning-based method can accurately characterize the metamaterial properties. An optimized structure with a high Young's modulus and low thermal conductivity is designed by AO within the first 30 iterations. This approach accelerates simulating the effective properties of metamaterials and can design microstructures with multiple excellent performances. The work offers guidance to design microstructures in various practical applications such as vibration energy absorbers.

Chirality is inherent to a broad range of systems, including solid-state and wave physics. The precession (chiral motion) of the magnetic moments in magnetic materials, forming spin waves, has various properties and many applications in magnetism and spintronics. We show that an optical analogue of spin waves can be generated in arrays of plasmonic nanohelices. Such optical waves arise from the interaction between twisted helix eigenmodes carrying spin and orbital angular momenta. We demonstrate that these optical spin waves are reflected at the interface between successive domains of enantiomeric nanohelices, forming a heterochiral lattice regardless of the wave propagation direction within the lattice. Optical spin waves may be applied in techniques involving photon spin, ranging from data processing and storage to quantum optics.

A terahertz metamaterial microfluidic sensing chip for ultrasensitive detection is proposed to investigate the response of substances to terahertz radiation in liquid environments and enhance the molecular fingerprinting of trace substances. The structure consists of a cover layer, a metal microstructure, a microfluidic channel, a metal reflective layer, and a buffer layer from top to bottom, respectively. The simulation results show that there are three obvious resonance absorption peaks in the range of 1.5-3.0 THz and the absorption intensities are all above 90%. Among them, the absorption intensity at M1 = 1.971 THz is 99.99%, which is close to the perfect absorption, and its refractive index sensitivity and Q-factor are 859 GHz/RIU and 23, respectively, showing excellent sensing characteristics. In addition, impedance matching and equivalent circuit theory are introduced in this paper to further analyze the physical mechanism of the sensor. Finally, we perform numerical simulations using refractive index data of normal and cancer cells, and the results show that the sensor can distinguish different types of cells well. The chip can reduce the sample pretreatment time as well as enhance the interaction between terahertz waves and matter, which can be used for early disease screening and food quality and safety detection in the future.

Non-Hermitian matrices are ubiquitous in the description of nature ranging from classical dissipative systems, including optical, electrical, and mechanical metamaterials, to scattering of waves and open quantum many-body systems. Seminal line-gap and point-gap classifications of non-Hermitian systems using K-theory have deepened the understanding of many physical phenomena. However, ample systems remain beyond this description; reference points and lines do not in general distinguish whether multiple non-Hermitian bands exhibit intriguing exceptional points, spectral braids and crossings. To address this we consider two different notions: non-Hermitian band gaps and separation gaps that crucially encompass a broad class of multi-band scenarios, enabling the description of generic band structures with symmetries. With these concepts, we provide a unified and comprehensive classification of both gapped and nodal systems in the presence of physically relevant parity-time (PT) and pseudo-Hermitian symmetries using homotopy theory. This uncovers new stable topology stemming from both eigenvalues and wave functions, and remarkably also implies distinct fragile topological phases. In particular, we reveal different Abelian and non-Abelian phases inPT-symmetric systems, described by frame and braid topology. The corresponding invariants are robust to symmetry-preserving perturbations that do not induce (exceptional) degeneracy, and they also predict the deformation rules of nodal phases. We further demonstrate that spontaneousPTsymmetry breaking is captured by Chern-Euler and Chern-Stiefel-Whitney descriptions, a fingerprint of unprecedented non-Hermitian topology previously overlooked. Chirality is omnipresent in the living world. As biomimetic nanotechnology and self-assembly advance, they too need chirality. Accordingly, there is a pressing need to develop general methods to characterize chiral building blocks at the nanoscale in liquids such as water─the medium of life. Here, we demonstrate the chiroptical second-harmonic Tyndall scattering effect. The effect was observed in Si nanohelices, an example of a high-refractive-index dielectric nanomaterial. For three wavelengths of illumination, we observe a clear difference in the second-harmonic scattered light that depends on the chirality of the nanohelices and the handedness of circularly polarized light. Importantly, we provide a theoretical analysis that explains the origin of the effect and its direction dependence, resulting from different specific contributions of "electric dipole-magnetic dipole" and "electric dipole-electric quadrupole" coupling tensors. Using numerical simulations, we narrow down the number of such terms to 8 in forward scattering and to a single one in right-angled scattering. For chiral scatterers such as high-refractive-index dielectric nanoparticles, our findings expand the Tyndall scattering regime to nonlinear optics. Moreover, our theory can be broadened and adapted to further classes where such scattering has already been observed or is yet to be observed.

Nonreciprocal topological edge states based on external magnetic bias have been regarded as the last resort for genuine unidirectional wave transport, showing superior robustness over topological states with preserved time-reversal symmetry. However, fast and efficient reconfigurability of their trajectory has remained a formidable challenge due to the difficulty in controlling the spatial distribution of magnetic fields over large areas and short times. Here, this persistent issue is solved by leveraging the rich topology of unitary scattering networks, and achieve fast steering of nonreciprocal topological transport at an interface between a Chern and an anomalous topological insulator, without having to control a magnetic field. Such interface can be drawn by doping the network with scatterers located at the center of each link, whose level of reflection is electrically tuned. With experiments in the GHz range, the possibility to actively steer the way of unidirectional edge states is demonstrated, switching the transmission path thousands of times per second in a fully-robust topological heterostructure. Electromagnetic (EM) metamaterials have garnered considerable attention due to their capacity to achieve negative parameters, significantly influencing the integration of natural materials with artificially structural media. The emergence of carbon aerogels (CAs) offers an opportunity to create lightweight EM metamaterials, notable for their promising EM shielding or absorption effects. This paper introduces an efficient, low-cost method for fabricating CAs without requiring stringent drying conditions. By finely tuning the ZnCl 2 /lignin ratio, the porosity is controlled in CAs. This control leads to an epsilon-negative response in the radio-frequency region, driven by the intrinsic plasmonic state of the 3D carbon network, as opposed to traditional periodic building blocks. This approach yields a tunable and weakly epsilon-negative response, reaching an order of magnitude of -10 3 under MHz frequencies. Equivalent circuit analysis highlights the inductive characteristics of CAs, correlating their significant dielectric loss at low frequencies. Additionally, EM simulations are performed to evaluate the distribution of the electric field vector in epsilon-negative CAs, showcasing their potential for effective EM shielding. Surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) are electromagnetic excitations existing at the interface between a metal and a dielectric. SPPs provide a promising path in nanophotonic devices for light manipulation at the micro and nanoscale with applications in optoelectronics, biomedicine, and energy harvesting. Recently, SPPs are extended to unconventional materials like graphene, transparent oxides, superconductors, and topological systems characterized by linearly dispersive electronic bands. In this respect, 3D Dirac and Weyl semimetals offer a promising frontier for infrared (IR) and terahertz (THz) radiation tuning by topologically-protected SPPs. In this work, the THz-IR optical response of platinum ditelluride (PtTe 2 ) type-II Dirac topological semimetal films grown on Si substrates is investigated. SPPs generated on microscale ribbon arrays of PtTe 2  are detected in the far-field limit, finding an excellent agreement among measurements, theoretical models, and electromagnetic simulation data. The far-field measurements are further supported by near-field IR data which indicate a strong electric field enhancement due to the SPP excitation near the ribbon edges. The present findings indicate that the PtTe 2  ribbon array appears an ideal active layout for geometrically tunable SPPs thus inspiring a new fashion of optically tunable materials in the technologically demanding THz and IR spectrum., (© 2024 Wiley‐VCH GmbH.)

Recently, metamaterials and metasurface have gained rapidly increasing attention from researchers due to their extraordinary optical and electrical properties. Metamaterials are described as artificially defined periodic structures exhibiting negative permittivity and permeability simultaneously. Whereas metasurfaces are the 2D analogue of metamaterials in the sense that they have a small but not insignificant depth. Because of their high optical confinement and adjustable optical resonances, these artificially engineered materials appear as a viable photonic platform for biosensing applications. This review paper discusses the recent development of metamaterial and metasurface in biosensing applications based on the gigahertz, terahertz, and optical frequency domains encompassing the whole electromagnetic spectrum. Overlapping features such as material selection, structure, and physical mechanisms were considered during the classification of our biosensing applications. Metamaterials and metasurfaces working in the GHz range provide prospects for better sensing of biological samples, THz frequencies, falling between GHz and optical frequencies, provide unique characteristics for biosensing permitting the exact characterization of molecular vibrations, with an emphasis on molecular identification, label-free analysis, and imaging of biological materials. Optical frequencies on the other hand cover the visible and near-infrared regions, allowing fine regulation of light-matter interactions enabling metamaterials and metasurfaces to offer excellent sensitivity and specificity in biosensing. The outcome of the sensor's sensitivity to an electric or magnetic field and the resonance frequency are, in theory, determined by the frequency domain and features. Left-handed materials are known to exhibit exotic properties in controlling electromagnetic fields, with direct applications in negative reflection and refraction, conformal optical mapping, and electromagnetic cloaking. While typical left-handed materials are constructed periodic metal-dielectric structures, the same effect can be obtained in composite guest-host systems with no periodicity or structural order. Such systems are typically described by the effective-medium approach, in which the components of the electric permittivity tensor are determined as a function of individual material properties and doping concentration. In this paper, we extend the discussion on the mixing rules to include left-handed composite systems and highlight the exotic properties arising from the effective-medium approach in this framework in terms of effective values and dispersion properties.

The use of metamaterials in various devices has revolutionized applications in optics, healthcare, acoustics, and power systems. Advancements in these fields demand novel or superior metamaterials that can demonstrate targeted control of electromagnetic, mechanical, and thermal properties of matter. Traditional design systems and methods often require manual manipulations which is time-consuming and resource intensive. The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in optimizing metamaterial design can be employed to explore variant disciplines and address bottlenecks in design. AI-based metamaterial design can also enable the development of novel metamaterials by optimizing design parameters that cannot be achieved using traditional methods. The application of AI can be leveraged to accelerate the analysis of vast data sets as well as to better utilize limited data sets via generative models. This review covers the transformative impact of AI and AI-based metamaterial design for optics, acoustics, healthcare, and power systems. The current challenges, emerging fields, future directions, and bottlenecks within each domain are discussed.

Vertically stacked multiple atomically thin layers have recently widened the landscape of rich optical structures thanks to these quantum metamaterials or van der Waals (vdW) materials, featuring hyperbolic polaritons with unprecedented avenues for light. Despite their far-reaching implications, most of their properties rest entirely on a trivial band topological origin. Here, a 2D approach is adopted toward a micromechanical vdW analogue that, as a result of engineered chiral and mirror symmetries, provides topologically resilient hyperbolic radiation of mechanical vibrations in the ultrasonic regime. By applying laser vibrometry of the micrometer-sized metasurface, we are able to exhibit the exotic fingerprints of robust hyperbolic radiation spanning several frequencies, which beyond their physical relevance, may enable ultrasonic technologies., (© 2024 Wiley‐VCH GmbH.)

The non-ionizing and penetrative characteristics of terahertz (THz) radiation have recently led to its adoption across a variety of applications. To effectively utilize THz radiation, modulators with precise control are imperative. While most recent THz modulators manipulate the amplitude, frequency, or phase of incident THz radiation, considerably less progress has been made toward THz polarization modulation. Conventional methods for polarization control suffer from high driving voltages, restricted modulation depth, and narrow band capabilities, which hinder device performance and broader applications. Consequently, an ideal THz modulator that offers high modulation depth along with ease of processing and operation is required. In this paper, we propose and realize a THz metamaterial comprised of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) actuated by the phase-transition material vanadium dioxide (VO 2 ). Simulation and experimental results of the three-dimensional metamaterials show that by leveraging the unique phase-transition attributes of VO 2 , our THz polarization modulator offers notable advancements over existing designs, including broad operation spectrum, high modulation depth, ease of fabrication, ease of operation condition, and continuous modulation capabilities. Materials with a negative Poisson ratio have the counterintuitive property of expanding laterally when they are stretched longitudinally. They are accordingly termed auxetic, from the Greek auxesis meaning to increase. Experimental studies have demonstrated auxetic materials to have superior material properties, compared with conventional ones. These include synclastic curvature, increased acoustic absorption, increased resilience to material fatigue, and increased resistance to mechanical failure. Until now, the latter observations have remained poorly understood theoretically. With this motivation, the contributions of this work are twofold. First, we elucidate analytically the way in which stress propagates spatially across a material following a localized plastic failure event, finding a significantly reduced stress propagation in auxetic materials compared with conventional ones. In this way, a plastic failure event occurring in one part of a material has a reduced tendency to trigger knock-on plastic events in neighboring regions. Second, via the numerical simulation of a lattice elastoplastic model, we demonstrate a key consequence of this reduced stress propagation to be an increased resistance to mechanical failure. Early diagnosis of diseases, especially cancer, is critical for effective treatment. The unique properties of terahertz technology have attracted attention in this field. However, current terahertz bio-detection methods face challenges due to differences between the test environment and the actual in vivo conditions. In this study, a novel method is proposed for detecting in vivo-like cells using a biosensor chip composed of metamaterials and a cavity. The cavity has a thickness of ~50 μm. The structure can protect cells from damage and provides a liquid environment like an in vivo state. Through simulation analysis, the metamaterials sensor exhibits a theoretical sensitivity of 0.287 THz/RIU (Refractive Index Unit) with a 50 μm thick analyte. The detection method is experimentally validated using the apoptosis of glioma cells and various cell types. The biosensor investigates the apoptosis of glioma cells under the impact of temozolomide, and the trend of the results was consistent with the Cell Counting Kit-8 method. Furthermore, at a concentration of ~5200 cells/cm 2 , the experimental results demonstrate that the sensor can distinguish between neurons and glioma cells with a resonance frequency difference of approximately 30 GHz. This research has significant potential for detecting glioma cells and offers an alternative approach to in vivo-like cell detection.

We synthesize geometrically tailorable anisotropic plates by combining button shaped fish-scale like features on soft substrates, then lacing them with high-stiffness strings. This creates a new type of biomimetic architectured structure with multiple broken symmetries. First, the tendons and substrate together break the symmetry of the bending response between the concave and convex curvature. Next, the weave pattern of the tendons further breaks symmetry along the two directors of plates. The anisotropy is clearly evident in 3-point bending experiments. Motivated by these experiments and the need for design, we formulate an analytical energy-based model to quantify the anisotropic elasticity. In the field of structure health monitoring (SHM), the use of Lamb wave to locate damage is a common method. Energy focusing is beneficial for damage localization because of higher SNR and higher resolution. Optimization design of elastic metamaterials is promising for energy focusing based on speed modulation. However, current design scheme is effective only for narrowband Lamb waves. Compared to narrowband waves, broadband Lamb waves with a larger frequency range carry richer structural information. In this study, an energy focusing method based on broadband Lamb waves by simultaneous designing excitation waveforms and elastic metamaterials is proposed. Firstly, COMSOL finite element simulation software is used to calculate the relationship between the metamaterial structure and the excitation wave. Subsequently, the metamaterial structure and the excitation signal form are designed according to the relationship. Functional metamaterials can be constructed by assembling nanoparticles (NPs) into well-ordered structures, which show fascinating properties at different length scales. Using polymer-grafted NPs (PGNPs) as a building block, flexible composite metamaterials can be obtained, of which the structure is significantly affected by the property of polymer ligands. Here, it is demonstrated that the crystallization of polymer ligands determines the assembly behavior of NPs and reveal a pathway-dependent self-assembly of PGNPs into different metastructures in solution. By changing the crystallization degree of polymer ligands, the arrangement structure of NPs can be tailored. When the polymer ligands highly crystallize, the PGNPs assemble into diamond-shaped platelets, in which the NPs arrange disorderedly. When the polymer ligands lowly crystallize, the PGNPs assemble into highly ordered 3D superlattices, in which the NPs pack into a body-centered-cubic structure. The structure transformation of PGNP assemblies can be achieved by thermal annealing to regulate the crystallization of polymer ligands. Interestingly, the diamond-shaped platelets remain "living" for seeded epitaxial growth of newly added crystalline species. We present a review outlining the basic mechanism, background, recent technical developments, and clinical applications of aqueous dielectric padding in the field of MRI. Originally meant to be a temporary solution, it has gained traction as an effective method for correcting B 1 + inhomogeneities due to the unique properties of the calcium titanate and barium titanate perovskites used. Aqueous dielectric pads have used a variety of high-permittivity materials over the years to improve the quality of MRI acquisitions at 1.5 and 3 T and more recently for 7 T neuroimaging applications. The technical development and assessment of these pads have been advanced by an increased use of mathematical modeling and electromagnetic simulations. These tools have allowed for a more complete understanding of the physical interactions between dielectric pads and the RF coil, making testing and safety assessments more accurate. The ease of use and effectiveness that dielectric pads offer have allowed them to become more commonplace in tackling imaging challenges in more clinically focused environments. More recently, they have seen usage not only in anatomical imaging methods but also in specialized metabolic imaging sequences such as GluCEST and NOE MTR . New colossally high-permittivity materials have been proposed; however, practical utilization has been a continued challenge due to unfavorable frequency dependences as well as safety limitations. By utilizing bicontinuous and nanoporous ordered nanonetworks, such as double gyroid (DG) and double diamond (DD), metamaterials with exceptional optical and mechanical properties can be fabricated through the templating synthesis of functional materials. However, the volume fraction range of DG in block copolymers is significantly narrow, making it unable to vary its porosity and surface-to-volume ratio. Here, the theoretically limited structural volume of the DG phase in coil-coil copolymers is overcome by enlarging the conformational asymmetry through the association of mesogens, providing fast access to achieving flexible structured materials of ultra-high porosities. The new materials design, dual-extractable nanocomposite, is created by incorporating a photodegradable block with a solvent-extractable mesogen (m) into an accepting block, resulting in a new hollow gyroid (HG) with the largely increased surface-to-volume ratio and porosity of 77 vol%. The lightweight HG exhibits a low refractive index of 1.11 and a very high specific reduced modulus, almost two times that of the typical negative gyroid (porosity≈53%) and three times that of the positive gyroid (porosity≈24%). Friction, wear, and the consequent energy dissipation pose significant challenges in systems with moving components, spanning various domains, including nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS/MEMS) and bio-MEMS (microrobots), hip prostheses (biomaterials), offshore wind and hydro turbines, space vehicles, solar mirrors for photovoltaics, triboelectric generators, etc. Nature-inspired bionic surfaces offer valuable examples of effective texturing strategies, encompassing various geometric and topological approaches tailored to mitigate frictional effects and related functionalities in various scenarios. By employing biomimetic surface modifications, for example, roughness tailoring, multifunctionality of the system can be generated to efficiently reduce friction and wear, enhance load-bearing capacity, improve self-adaptiveness in different environments, improve chemical interactions, facilitate biological interactions, etc. However, the full potential of bioinspired texturing remains untapped due to the limited mechanistic understanding of functional aspects in tribological/biotribological settings. The current review extends to surface engineering and provides a comprehensive and critical assessment of bioinspired texturing that exhibits sustainable synergy between tribology and biology. The successful evolving examples from nature for surface/tribological solutions that can efficiently solve complex tribological problems in both dry and lubricated contact situations are comprehensively discussed. The review encompasses four major wear conditions: sliding, solid-particle erosion, machining or cutting, and impact (energy absorbing). Furthermore, it explores how topographies and their design parameters can provide tailored responses (multifunctionality) under specified tribological conditions. Additionally, an interdisciplinary perspective on the future potential of bioinspired materials and structures with enhanced wear resistance is presented.
