Background: Some heavy metals could be ingested into human body through breathing besides diet and drinking. Atmospheric particulates and smoke are main sources of this kind for the metals' exposure to human. Compared with environmental water, the methodologies for trace metals in particulates and smoke samples with more complex matrix are much less. Magnetic functional sorbents can be designed to remove complex matrix and enrich target analytes. The combination of magnetic solid phase extraction (MSPE) with highly sensitive inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) detection is a good alternative for the analytical purpose. (92)., Results: Magnetic polymers were synthesized through free radical polymerization with Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles as the core and 2-methyl-2-hydroxyethyl 2-acrylate-2-hydroxyethyl ester phosphate as external modifier. The sorbent showed a high phosphorus content (2.7 wt%) and good selectivity to target REEs, along with good reusability (at least 45 times) and chemical stability. With the consumption of 150 mL aqueous solution, an enrichment factor of 300 was obtained by the proposed method, leading to low detection limits (0.001-0.2 ng L -1 ) for 15 REEs. The application potential of the method was further evaluated by analyzing local atmospheric particulate and cigar smoke samples. Recovery of 86.3-107 % in digested total suspended particulate (TSP) was obtained for 15 REEs, demonstrating a good anti-interference ability of the method. Target REEs in TSP, PM 2.5 and PM 10 samples were found to be 0.01-2.81, 0.006-1.09 and 0.009-2.46 ng m -3 , respectively, and none of them were detected in the collected cigar smoke. (148) SIGNIFICANCE: The method of MSPE-ICP-MS was demonstrated with good potential for trace analysis in complex sample matrix, probably due to the good selectivity of the functionalized polymers. With the design and fabrication of specific functionalized magnetic sorbents, other heavy metals can be monitored in those samples which would be intake by human breathing. A novel SrWO 4 -poly(3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene) (PEDOT)-polypyrrole (PPy) nanocomposite was synthesized via chemically oxidative polymerization and considered by using numerous method of the techniques. The resulting SrWO 4 /PEDOT-PPy nanocomposite demonstrated remarkable electrochemical sensing capabilities for sulfadiazine (SFA). As a modified glassy carbon electrode (SrWO 4 /PEDOT-PPy/GCE) revealed for superior catalytic activity in the electrochemical oxidation of sulfadiazine, enabling sensitive detection with quantification and detection limits of 1.0936 × 10 -9  M µA -1 and 2.2104 × 10 -9  M µA -1 , respectively. This technique effectively determined SFA content in real samples. Additionally, SrWO 4 /PEDOT-PPy demonstrated extraordinary photocatalytic ability, achieving a Methylene Blue (MB) degradation rate of up to 99.1% under halogen light irradiation within 80 min. Hybrid photocatalyst has exhibited to strong reusability and photocatalytic stability under frequent light exposure. A contrivance for the photocatalytic deprivation of MB by SrWO 4 /PEDOT-PPy is proposed. These results underscore the crucial role of SrWO 4 /PEDOT-PPy in practical environmental remediation analysis. The fluorescence investigations have betrothed to terephthalic acid radical formations of SrWO 4 /PEDOT-PPy hybrids, which were modulated by different approaches, and its mainly driven for higher illumination aptitudes. Meanwhile, this was more supporting for physio-chemical properties of the phenomenon, at this consequential with significantly well improved to the photocatalytic performances. The photoconversion of CO2 into valuable chemical products using solar energy is a promising strategy to address both energy and environmental challenges. However, the strongly adsorbed CO2 frequently impedes the seamless advancement of the subsequent reaction by significantly increasing the reaction activation energy. Here, we present a BiFeO3 material with lattice strain that collaboratively regulates the d/p-2π* orbitals hybridization between metal sites and *CO2 as well as *COOH intermediates to achieve rapid conversion of solidly adsorbed CO2 to critical *COOH intermediates, accelerating the overall CO2 reduction kinetics. Quasi in-situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and in-situ Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy combined with theoretical calculation reveals that the optimized Fe sites enhance the adsorption and activation effect of CO2, and continuous internal electrons are rapidly transferred to the reaction sites and injected into the surface *CO2 and *COOH under the condition of illumination, which promotes the rapid formation and stability of *COOH. Certainly, the performance of CO2 photoreduction to CO is improved by 12.81-fold compared with the base material. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are featured with large specific surface areas, good thermal stability, and abundant pores. These properties are exactly what the sorbents used for extraction or adsorption of interest substances are desired with. While, the low density and hydrophobicity of COFs often makes them difficult to be dispersed evenly and recovered from the aqueous solution. Magnetic covalent organic frameworks (MCOFs) inherit magnetic property of the magnetic particles and porous structure of COFs. They have improved dispersity in aqueous solution and phase separation can be rapidly achieved via external magnetic fields. This review summarized the synthesis strategies for MCOFs, and their application in trace environmental organic pollutants analysis by chromatography techniques. Developing anode-free batteries is the ultimate goal in pursuit of high energy density and safety. It is more urgent for sodium (Na)-based batteries due to its inherently low energy density and safety hazards induced by highly reactive Na metal anodes. However, there is no electrolyte that can meet the demanding Na plating-stripping Coulomb efficiency (CE) while resisting oxidative decomposition at high voltages for building stable anode-free Na batteries. Here, a "liquid-in-solid" electrolyte design strategy is proposed to integrate target performances of liquid and solid-state electrolytes. Breaking through the Na + transport channel of Na-containing zeolite molecular sieve by ion-exchange and confining aggregated liquid ether electrolytes in the nanopore and void of zeolites, it achieves excellent high-voltage stability enabled by solid-state zeolite electrolytes, while inheriting the ultra-high CE (99.84%) from liquid ether electrolytes. When applied in a 4.25 V-class anode-free Na battery, an ultra-high energy density of 412 W h kg -1 (based on the active material of both cathodes and anodes) can be reached, which is comparable to the state-of-the-art graphite||LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 lithium-ion batteries. Furthermore, the assembled anode-free pouch cell exhibits excellent cycling stability, and a high capacity retention of 89.2% can be preserved after 370 cycles., (© 2024 Wiley‐VCH GmbH.)

Micro(nano)plastics (MNPs) have become a significant environmental concern due to their widespread presence in the biosphere and potential harm to ecosystems and human health. Here, we propose for the first time a MNPs capture, utilization, and storage (PCUS) concept to achieve MNPs remediation from water while meeting economically productive upcycling and environmentally sustainable plastic waste management. A highly efficient capturing material derived from surface-modified woody biomass waste (M-Basswood) is developed to remove a broad spectrum of multidimensional and compositional MNPs from water. The M-Basswood delivered a high and stable capture efficiency of >99.1% at different pH or salinity levels. This exceptional capture performance is driven by multiscale interactions between M-Basswood and MNPs, involving physical trapping, strong electrostatic attractions, and triggered MNPs cluster-like aggregation sedimentation. Additionally, the in vivo biodistribution of MNPs shows low ingestion and accumulation of MNPs in the mice organs. After MNPs remediation from water, the M-Basswood, together with captured MNPs, is further processed into a high-performance composite board product where MNPs serve as the glue for utilization and storage. What we believe to be a novel reconfigurable multi-channel microwave photonic (MWP) receiver for multi-band RF signal is demonstrated for the first time, to the best of our knowledge. A reconfigurable MWP signal processing chip based on two cascaded microring filter banks is employed in the proposed receiver, which slices the multi-band RF input into several narrow band signals and selects optical frequency comb lines for frequency converting of each channel. Due to the significant reconfigurability of the signal processing chip, the proposed receiver can flexibly choose the output frequency band of each channel, and thus different frequency components of the multi-band RF input can be down converted to the intermediate frequency (IF) band for receiving or converted to other frequency band for forwarding. A multi-band RF signal composed of a linear frequency modulation (LFM) signal with 2 GHz bandwidth and a quad-phase shift keyed (QPSK) signal with 100 Mbit/s rate is experimentally received and reconstructed by the proposed receiver, where the reconstructed LFM component exhibits a signal to noise ratio (SNR) of 10.2 dB, and the reconstructed QPSK component reaches a high SNR of 26.1 dB and a great error vector magnitude (EVM) of 11.73%. On the other hand, the QPSK component of the multi-band RF signal centered at 13.5 GHz is successfully converted to 3.1 GHz.

Hard carbons are emerging as the most viable anodes to support the commercialization of sodium-ion (Na-ion) batteries due to their competitive performance. However, the hard carbon anode suffers from low initial Coulombic efficiency (ICE), and the ambiguous Na-ion (Na + ) storage mechanism and interfacial chemistry fail to give a reasonable interpretation. Here, we have identified the time-dependent ion pre-desolvation on the nanopore of hard carbons, which significantly affects the Na + storage efficiency by altering the solvation structure of electrolytes. Consummating the pre-desolvation by extending the aging time, generates a highly aggregated electrolyte configuration inside the nanopore, resulting in negligible reductive decomposition of electrolytes. When applying the above insights, the hard carbon anodes achieve a high average ICE of 98.21% in the absence of any Na supplementation techniques. Therefore, the negative-to-positive capacity ratio can be reduced to 1.02 for full cells, which enables an improved energy density. Introduction: Physical and mental health problems among pilots affect their working state and impact flight safety. Although pilots' physical and mental health problems have become increasingly prominent, their health has not been taken seriously. This study aimed to clarify challenges and support needs related to psychological and physical health among pilots to inform development of a more scientific and comprehensive physical and mental health system for civil aviation pilots., Methods: This qualitative study recruited pilots from nine civil aviation companies. Focus group interviews via an online conference platform were conducted in August 2022. Colaizzi analysis was used to derive themes from the data and explore pilots' experiences, challenges, and support needs., Results: The main sub-themes capturing pilots' psychological and physical health challenges were: (1) imbalance between family life and work; (2) pressure from assessment and physical examination eligibility requirements; (3) pressure from worries about being infected with COVID-19; (4) nutrition deficiency during working hours; (5) changes in eating habits because of the COVID-19 pandemic; (6) sleep deprivation; (7) occupational diseases; (8) lack of support from the company in coping with stress; (9) pilots' yearly examination standards; (10) support with sports equipment; (11) respecting planned rest time; and (12) isolation periods., Discussion: The interviewed pilots experienced major psychological pressure from various sources, and their physical health condition was concerning. We offer several suggestions that could be addressed to improve pilots' physical and mental health. Photocatalytic oxygen reductive H 2 O 2 production is a promising approach to alternative industrial anthraquinone processes while suffering from the requirement of pure O 2 feedstock for practical application. Herein, we report a spaced double hydrogen bond (IC-H-bond) through multi-component Radziszewski reaction in an imidazole poly-ionic-liquid composite (SI-PIL-TiO 2 ) and levofloxacin hydrochloride (LEV) electron donor for highly efficient and selective photocatalytic air reductive H 2 O 2 production. It is found that the IC-H-bond formed by spaced imino (-NH-) group of SI-PIL-TiO 2 and carbonyl (-C=O) group of LEV can switch the imidazole active sites characteristic from a covered state to a fully exposed one to shield the strong adsorption of electron donor and N 2 in the air, and propel an intenser positive potential and more efficient orbitals binding patterns of SI-PIL-TiO 2 surface to establish competitive active sites for selectivity O 2 chemisorption. Moreover, the high electron enrichment of imidazole as an active site for the 2e - oxygen reduction ensures the rapid reduction of O 2 . Therefore, the IC-H-bond enables a total O 2 utilization and conversion efficiency of 94.8 % from direct photocatalytic air reduction, achieving a H 2 O 2 production rate of 1518 μmol/g/h that is 16 and 23 times compared to poly-ionic-liquid composite without spaced imino groups (PIL-TiO 2 ) and TiO 2 , respectively., (© 2024 Wiley‐VCH GmbH.)

Background: To report the ocular characteristics and management of three cases of retinitis pigmentosa (RP) concurrent primary angle closure glaucoma (PACG)., Case Presentation: Three middle-aged patients presenting with diminished vision, high intraocular pressure (IOP), and typical fundus manifestations of RP were clinically evaluated. The individualized treatment was based on the ocular conditions of each case. A novel genetic alteration in ZNF408 was identified in one patient. Two patients with short-axial eyes received unilateral combined trabeculectomy, cataract surgery, and Irido-zonulo-hyaloid-vitrectomy. One of them had a subluxated lens, managed with a capsular tension ring implantation. Their contralateral eyes, respectively, underwent laser peripheral iridotomy (LPI) and transscleral cyclophotocoagulation. The third patient underwent bilaterally combined laser peripheral iridoplasty, LPI, and medication. Ultimately, all patients achieved the target IOP during a two-year follow-up., Conclusion: Young patients with RP may have a risk of developing angle closure glaucoma, and conversely, patients with angle closure glaucoma at younger age should be aware of the presence of RP. Therefore, routine gonioscopy and IOP monitoring are required for RP patients, and detailed fundus examinations are warranted for young PACG patients., (© 2023. The Author(s).)

Facile synthesis of hierarchically porous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with adjustable porosity and high crystallinity attracts great attention yet remains challenging. Herein, a micromolar amount of dye-based modulator (Rhodamine B (RhB)) is employed to easily and controllably tailor the pore size of a Ti-based metal-organic framework (MIL-125-NH 2 ). The RhB used in this method is easily removed by washing or photodegradation, avoiding secondary posttreatment. It is demonstrated that the carboxyl functional group and the steric effects of RhB are indispensable for enlarging the pore size of the MIL-125-NH 2 . The resulting hierarchically porous MIL-125-NH 2 (RH-MIL-125-NH 2 ) exhibits optimized adsorption and photocatalytic activity because the newly formed mesopore with defects concurrently facilitates mass transport of guest molecules (toluene) and photogenerated charge separation. Heroin can cause damage to many human organs, possibly leading to different types of arrhythmias and abnormal electrophysiological function of the heart muscle and the steady state of calcium-ion channels. We explored cardiomyocytes treated with heroin and the effect on calcium-ion channels. Transcriptomics and metabolomics were used to screen for differential genes and metabolite alterations after heroin administration to jointly analyze the effect of heroin on calcium channels in cardiomyocytes. Cardiomyocytes from primary neonatal rats were cultured in vitro and were treated with different concentrations of heroin to observe the changes in morphology and spontaneous beat frequency and rhythm by a patch clamp technique. Transcriptomic studies selected a total of 1,432 differentially expressed genes, 941 upregulated and 491 downregulated genes in rat cardiomyocytes from the control and drug intervention groups. Gene Ontology functional enrichment showed that 1,432 differential genes selected by the two groups were mainly involved in the regulation of the multicellular organismal process, response to external stimulus, myofibril, inflammatory response, muscle system process, cardiac muscle contraction, etc. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathway enrichment analysis indicated that these genes were mainly concentrated in cardiac muscle contraction, osteoclast differentiation, adrenergic signaling in cardiomyocytes, dilated cardiomyopathy, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, and other important pathways. Metabolomic testing further suggested that cardiomyocyte metabolism was severely affected after heroin intervention. After the treatment with heroin, the L-type calcium channel current I - V curve was up-shifted, the peak value was significantly lower than that of the control group, action potential duration 90 was significantly increased in the action potential, resting potential negative value was lowered, and action potential amplitude was significantly decreased in cardiomyocytes. In this study, heroin could cause morphological changes in primary cardiomyocytes of neonatal rats and electrophysiological function. Glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI) anchoring of proteins is a conserved posttranslational modification in eukaryotes. GPI-anchored proteins are widely distributed in fungal plant pathogens, but the specific roles of the GPI-anchored proteins in the pathogenicity of Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, a devastating necrotrophic plant pathogen with a worldwide distribution, remain largely unknown. This research addresses SsGSR1 , which encodes an S. sclerotiorum glycine- and serine-rich protein named SsGsr1 with an N-terminal secretory signal and a C-terminal GPI-anchor signal. SsGsr1 is located at the cell wall of hyphae, and deletion of SsGSR1 leads to abnormal cell wall architecture and impaired cell wall integrity of hyphae. The transcription levels of SsGSR1 were maximal in the initial stage of infection, and SsGSR1 -deletion strains showed impaired virulence in multiple hosts, indicating that SsGSR1 is critical for the pathogenicity. Interestingly, SsGsr1 targeted the apoplast of host plants to induce cell death that relies on the glycine-rich 11-amino-acid repeats arranged in tandem. The homologs of SsGsr1 in Sclerotinia , Botrytis , and Monilinia species contain fewer repeat units and have lost their cell death activity. Moreover, allelic variants of SsGSR1 exist in field isolates of S. sclerotiorum from rapeseed, and one of the variants lacking one repeat unit results in a protein that exhibits loss of function relative to the cell death-inducing activity and the virulence of S. sclerotiorum . Taken together, our results demonstrate that a variation in tandem repeats provides the functional diversity of GPI-anchored cell wall protein that, in S. sclerotiorum and other necrotrophic pathogens, allows successful colonization of the host plants. IMPORTANCE Sclerotinia sclerotiorum is an economically important necrotrophic plant pathogen and mainly applies cell wall-degrading enzymes and oxalic acid to kill plant cells before colonization. In this research, we characterized a glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI)-anchored cell wall protein named SsGsr1, which is critical for the cell wall architecture and the pathogenicity of S. sclerotiorum . Additionally, SsGsr1 induces rapid cell death of host plants that is dependent on glycine-rich tandem repeats. Interestingly, the number of repeat units varies among homologs and alleles of SsGsr1, and such a variation creates alterations in the cell death-inducing activity and the role in pathogenicity. This work advances our understanding of the variation of tandem repeats in accelerating the evolution of a GPI-anchored cell wall protein associated with the pathogenicity of necrotrophic fungal pathogens and prepares the way toward a fuller understanding of the interaction between S. sclerotiorum and host plants., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.

Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have been deemed to be a promising energy storage technology in terms of cost-effectiveness and sustainability. However, the electrodes often operate at potentials beyond their thermodynamic equilibrium, thus requiring the formation of interphases for kinetic stabilization. The interfaces of the anode such as typical hard carbons and sodium metals are particularly unstable because of its much lower chemical potential than the electrolyte. This creates more severe challenges for both anode and cathode interfaces when building anode-free cells to achieve higher energy densities. Manipulating the desolvation process through the nanoconfining strategy has been emphasized as an effective strategy to stabilize the interface and has attracted widespread attention. This Outlook provides a comprehensive understanding about the nanopore-based solvation structure regulation strategy and its role in building practical SIBs and anode-free batteries. Heredity and variation are inherent characteristics of species and are mainly reflected in the stability and variation of the genome; the former is relative, while the latter is continuous. However, whether life has both stable genomes and extremely diverse genomes at the same time is unknown. In this study, we isolated Sclerotinia sclerotiorum strains from sclerotium samples in Quincy, Washington State, USA, and found that four single-sclerotium-isolation strains (PB4, PB273, PB615, and PB623) had almost identical genomes to the reference strain 1980 isolated in the west of Nebraska 40 years ago. The genome of strain PB4 sequenced by the next-generation sequencing (NGS) and Pacific Biosciences (PacBio) sequencing carried only 135 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and 18 structural variations (SVs) compared with the genome of strain 1980 and 48 SNPs were distributed on Contig_20. Based on data generated by NGS, three other strains, PB273, PB615, and PB623, had 256, 275, and 262 SNPs, respectively, against strain 1980, which were much less than in strain PB4 (532 SNPs) and none of them occurred on Contig_20, suggesting much closer genomes to strain 1980 than to strain PB4. All other strains from America and China are rich in SNPs with a range of 34,391-77,618 when compared with strain 1980. We also found that there were 39-79 SNPs between strain PB4 and its sexual offspring, 53.1% of which also occurred on Contig_20. Our discoveries show that there are two types of genomes in S. sclerotiorum , one is very stable and the other tends to change constantly. Investigating the mechanism of such genome stability will enhance our understanding of heredity and variation.

Heavy reliance on petrochemical-based plastic foams in both industry and society has led to severe plastic pollution (the so-called "white pollution"). In this work, we develop a biodegradable, recyclable, and sustainable cellulose/bentonite (Cel/BT) foam material directly from resource-abundant natural materials (i.e., lignocellulosic biomass and minerals) via ambient drying. The strong resistance to the capillary force-driven structural collapse of the preformed three-dimensional (3D) network during the ambient drying process can be ascribed to the purpose-designed cellulose-bentonite coordination interaction, which provides a practical way for the locally scalable production of foam materials with designed shapes without complex processing and intensive energy consumption. Benefiting from the strong cellulose-bentonite coordination interaction, the Cel/BT foam material demonstrates high mechanical strength and outstanding thermal stability, outperforming commercial plastic polystyrene foam. Furthermore, the Cel/BT foam presents environmental impacts much lower than those of petrochemical-based plastic foams as it can be 100% recycled in a closed-loop recycling process and easily biodegraded in the environment (natural cellulose goes back to the carbon cycle, and bentonite minerals return to the geological cycle). This study demonstrates an energy-efficient ambient drying approach for the local and scalable production of an all-natural cellulose/bentonite foam for sustainable packaging, buildings, and beyond, presenting great potential in response to "white pollution" and resource shortage.

Hard carbon is regarded as the most promising anode material for sodium-ion (Na-ion) batteries, owing to its advantages of high abundance, low cost, and low operating potential. However, the rate capability and cycle life span of hard carbon anodes are far from satisfactory, severely hindering its industrial applications. Here, we demonstrate that the desolvation process defines the Na-ion diffusion kinetics and the formation of a solid electrolyte interface (SEI). The 3A zeolite molecular sieve film on the hard carbon is proposed to develop a step-by-step desolvation pathway that effectively reduces the high activation energy of the direct desolvation process. Moreover, step-by-step desolvation yields a thin and inorganic-dominated SEI with a lower activation energy for Na + transport. As a result, it contributes to greatly improved power density and cycling stability for both ester and ether electrolytes. When the above insights are applied, the hard carbon anode achieves the longest life span and minimum capacity fading rate at all evaluated current densities. Moreover, with the increase in current densities, an improved plateau capacity ratio is observed. This step-by-step desolvation strategy comprehensively enhances various properties of hard carbon anodes, which provides the possibility of building practical Na-ion batteries with high power density, high energy density, and durability.

Here, a novel transformed CdO with low coordination and N doping environment was simply synthesized through the involvement of the target molecule tetracycline (TC). The results showed that the shedding of surface hydroxyl groups led to a low coordination environment, and N doping formed a new doping energy level, which increased the charge density and promoted the migration and separation of photo-generated carriers. Its photocatalytic performance was 4.32 times higher than that of hydroxy-rich CdO and the selectivity coefficient was 4.8. Combined with theoretical calculation and in situ Attenuated Total Reflectance Fourier Transform Infrared (ATR-FTIR) analysis, the significant improvement of selectivity was due to the interaction of the doped N atom with the methyl carbon in TC. This work provided a new idea for the simultaneous construction of low coordination environment and N-doped materials for efficient selective photocatalysis.

Changing the solvation sheath of hydrated Zn ions is an effective strategy to stabilize Zn anodes to obtain a practical aqueous Zn-ion battery. However, key points related to the rational design remain unclear including how the properties of the solvent molecules intrinsically regulate the solvated structure of the Zn ions. This study proposes the use of a stability constant (K), namely, the equilibrium constant of the complexation reaction, as a universal standard to make an accurate selection of ligands in the electrolyte to improve the anode stability. It is found that K greatly impacts the corrosion current density and nucleation overpotential. Following this, ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid with a superhigh K effectively suppresses Zn corrosion and induces uniform Zn-ion deposition. As a result, the anode has an excellent stability of over 3000 h. The sodium (Na)-metal batteries hold great promise as a sustainable technology owing to the high element abundance and low cost. However, the generally used carbonate electrolytes remain highly reactive towards Na metal, leading to flammable gas evolution. Here, we propose an electrolyte sieving strategy to separate anion-mediated ion-pairs from dilute electrolytes by introducing a 3A zeolite molecular sieve film. The anion-mediated ion-pair firstly weakens the electron-withdrawing property of the cation, which effectively suppresses the gassing. In addition, the sieved electrolyte promotes the formation of robust inorganic-dominated solid electrolyte interphases. Therefore, it contributes to stable Na plating/stripping in Na|Al half cells with Coulombic efficiency maintaining at 98.5 % and a long service life of 800 cycles in full cells. Objective: The effects of Otubain-2 (OTUB2) on the proliferation, invasion, and migration of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) were investigated by interfering with OTUB2 expression., Methods: Bioinformatics analysis was used to analyze OTUB2 expression in esophageal carcinoma and interactions between OTUB2 and YAP1/TAZ. Paraffin-embedded ESCC tissues (n = 183) were selected for immunohistochemical staining to detect OTUB2, YAP1, TAZ, CTGF and their relationship with clinicopathological parameters, then the survival prognosis of ESCC patients was analyzed. Immunofluorescence, western blotting, and qRT-PCR were used to evaluate OTUB2 in ESCC cell lines. Cell lines with the highest expression of OTUB2 were transfected with lentivirus to knockdown OTUB2 levels. Changes in KYSE150 cell proliferation, migration, and invasion were measured using CCK-8, wound healing, and clone formation assays. The Transwell test and flow cytometry identified OTUB2 targets and explored roles and mechanisms involved in ESCC. Effects of OTUB2 on YAP1/TAZ signaling were also observed., Results: Bioinformatics analysis revealed OTUB2 was highly expressed in esophageal cancer and was associated with YAP1/TAZ. Immunohistochemistry showed that OTUB2 expression was increased in ESCC samples compared to parcancerous tissue. YAP1 and TAZ were higher expression in ESCC tissues, mainly localized in the nucleus. Compared with controls, the proliferation, migration, and invasion ability of KYSE150 cells after OTUB2 knockdown were significantly reduced (P < 0.05). The protein expression levels of YAP1, TAZ and CTGF decreased after knocking down the expression of OTUB2 (P < 0.05). OTUB2 knockdown in ESCC cell lines suppressed YAP1/TAZ signaling., Conclusions: OTUB2 regulated the protein expression of YAP1/TAZ to promote cell proliferation, migration, invasion, and tumor development. Low-cost and scalable sodium ion (Na-ion) batteries serve as an ideal alternative to the current lithium-ion batteries. To compensate for the shortage of energy density, the most accessible solution is developing a high-voltage anode-free configuration comprising a lightweight Al current collector on the anode and a high-voltage sodiumized cathode. However, it imposes stringent Na reversibility and high-voltage stability requirements on the electrolyte. A 3A zeolite molecular sieve film is rationally designed, and a highly aggregated solvation structure is constructed through the size effect. It suppresses the trace but continuous oxidative decomposition and extends the oxidative stability to 4.5 V without sacrificing the Na reversibility of the anode (99.91 %). Thus, we can make anode-free cells with high energy density of 369 and 372 W h kg -1 for 4.0 and 4.25 V class cells, respectively. Background: Serous borderline ovarian tumour (SBOT) is the most common type of BOT. Fertility sparing surgery (FSS) is an option for patients with SBOT, though it may increase the risk of recurrence. The clinical and molecular features of its recurrence are important and need to be investigated in detail., Methods: An internal cohort of 319 patients with SBOT was collected from Aug 1, 2009 to July 31, 2019 from the Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital of Fudan University in China. An external cohort of 100 patients with SBOT was collected from Aug 1, 2009 to Nov 30, 2019 from the Shandong Provincial Hospital in China. The risk factors for the recurrence were identified by multivariate cox analysis. Several computational methods were tested to establish a prediction tool for recurrence. Whole genome sequencing, RNA-seq, metabolomics and lipidomics were used to understand the molecular characteristics of the recurrence of SBOT., Findings: Five factors were significantly correlated with SBOT recurrence in a Han population: micropapillary pattern, advanced stage, FSS, microinvasion, and lymph node invasion. A random forest-based online recurrence prediction tool was established and validated using an internal cohort and an independent external cohort for patients with SBOT. The multi-omics analysis on the original SBOT samples revealed that recurrence is related to metabolic regulation of immunological suppression., Interpretation: Our study identified several important clinical and molecular features of recurrent SBOT. The prediction tool we established could help physicians to estimate the prognosis of patients with SBOT. Alkali metals have low potentials and high capacities, making them ideal anodes for next-generation batteries, but they suffer major problems, including dendrite growth and low Coulombic efficiency (CE). Achieving uniform metal deposition and having a reliable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) are the basic requirements for overcoming these problems. Here, a general remedy is reported for various alkali-metal anodes by the supramolecularization of alkali-metal cations with crown ethers that follows a size-matching rule. The positively charged supramolecular complex provides electrostatic shielding layers to regulate metal deposition and suppress dendrite formation. More promisingly, it reforms electric double layers and drives the production of organic-dominated SEIs with improved flexibility that can accommodate large volume changes. The high flexibility of SEIs during metal deposition and dissolution reduces the amount of dead metal and improves CE and cycling stability. Specifically, a 200% excess Li-based full cell has a capacity retention of ≈100% after 100 cycles. This crown-like supramolecularization strategy is a new chemistry that may be used for the production of dendrite-free metal-anode-based batteries not limited to the cases with alkali metal. Background: Esophageal cancer is the eighth most frequent and sixth most fatal cancer worldwide. This study aimed to investigate the clinical characteristics and prognostic significance of yes related protein 1 (YAP1) and transcriptional co-activator with PDZ binding motif (TAZ) in patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC)., Methods: A total of 306 ESCC pathological specimens and adjacent tissues (as control; tissues from the esophageal mucosa >5 cm from the edge of the tumor) were collected between January, 2008 and December, 2018. Immunohistochemical staining was used to assess the expression of YAP1 and TAZ proteins in the ESCC and adjacent tissues, and their relationship with clinicopathological parameters was evaluated using SPSS 21.0 software., Results: YAP1 and TAZ proteins were highly expressed in ESCC, and their expression was closely related to TNM stage and lymph node metastasis. Expression of YAP1 was associated with tumor size (P = .029), differentiation (P = .000), depth of invasion (P = .001), and TNM stage (P = .000). Expression of TAZ was associated with tumor size (P = .034), differentiation (P = .000), depth of invasion (P = .029), lymph node metastasis (P = .006), and ethnicity (P < .001). The expression of YAP1 protein was positively correlated with the expression of TAZ protein (r = 0.257, P < .05). YAP1 and TAZ expression (P = .039 and .000, respectively), tumor size (P = .041), and lymph node metastasis (P = .001) significantly affected the overall survival of patients with ESCC, and represent independent factors for overall survival., Conclusion: YAP1 and TAZ proteins are highly expressed in ESCC, and closely related to the clinical and pathological parameters such as the diameter of the tumor, degree of differentiation, and depth of invasion, indicating that YAP1 and TAZ may be involved in the development of ESCC. Periodic nanostructures, a group of nanomaterials consisting of single or multiple nano units/components periodically arranged into ordered patterns (e.g., vertical and lateral superlattices), have attracted tremendous attention in recent years due to their extraordinary physical and chemical properties that offer a huge potential for a multitude of applications in energy conversion, electronic and optoelectronic applications. Recent advances in the preparation strategies of periodic nanostructures, including self-assembly, epitaxy, and exfoliation, have paved the way to rationally modulate their ferroelectricity, superconductivity, band gap and many other physical and chemical properties. For example, the recent discovery of superconductivity observed in "magic-angle" graphene superlattices has sparked intensive studies in new ways, creating superlattices in twisted 2D materials. Recent development in the various state-of-the-art preparations of periodic nanostructures has created many new ideas and findings, warranting a timely review. In this review, we discuss the current advances of periodic nanostructures, including their preparation strategies, property modulations and various applications.

To substitute the energy-intensive Haber-Bosch process for the synthesis of ammonia, some labile techniques, such as photocatalysis, electrocatalysis, photoelectrocatalysis, and photothermocatalysis, have emerged and attracted intense research interest. However, the contamination of the reaction system is one of the major concerns on how to reliably and accurately evaluate the performance of these catalysts, which is why various control studies are involved. Isotopic labeling studies are one of the most reliable control strategies in nitrogen fixation experiments, to ensure that N 2 is exclusively the source of the generated ammonia. As a convenient, sensitive and accurate technique distinguished with a quantitative atomic mass resolution, liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) has been extensively employed for the detection of ammonia in aqueous electrolyte systems. However, the previous work protocols for 15 N 2 isotopic analysis using LC-MS either involved hazardous procedures which could potentially damage the instrument, or lacked in their experimental verification using real samples. Herein, a safe, reproducible and economical protocol for the detection of ammonia using LC-MS is presented, exhibiting an exponentially steep progressive detectivity of 15 N abundance, well verified with a series of experimental results for nitrogen reduction reactions. Changing lanes while driving requires coordinating the lateral and longitudinal controls of a vehicle, considering its running state and the surrounding environment. Although the existing rule-based automated lane-changing method is simple, it is unsuitable for unpredictable scenarios encountered in practice. Therefore, using a deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) algorithm, we propose an end-to-end method for automated lane changing based on lidar data. The distance state information of the lane boundary and the surrounding vehicles obtained by the agent in a simulation environment is denoted as the state space for an automated lane-change problem based on reinforcement learning. The steering wheel angle and longitudinal acceleration are used as the action space, and both the state and action spaces are continuous. In terms of the reward function, avoiding collision and setting different expected lane-changing distances that represent different driving styles are considered for security, and the angular velocity of the steering wheel and jerk are considered for comfort. The minimum speed limit for lane changing and the control of the agent for a quick lane change are considered for efficiency. For a one-way two-lane road, a visual simulation environment scene is constructed using Pyglet. By comparing the lane-changing process tracks of two driving styles in a simplified traffic flow scene, we study the influence of driving style on the lane-changing process and lane-changing time. Through the training and adjustment of the combined lateral and longitudinal control of autonomous vehicles with different driving styles in complex traffic scenes, the vehicles could complete a series of driving tasks while considering driving-style differences. The experimental results show that autonomous vehicles can reflect the differences in the driving styles at the time of lane change at the same speed. Under the combined lateral and longitudinal control, the autonomous vehicles exhibit good robustness to different speeds and traffic density in different road sections. Thus, autonomous vehicles trained using the proposed method can learn an automated lane-changing policy while considering safety, comfort, and efficiency.

Global demand for green and clean energy is increasing day by day owing to ongoing developments by the human race that are changing the face of the earth at a rate faster than ever. Exploring alternative sources of energy to replace fossil fuel consumption has become even more vital to control the growing concentration of CO 2 , and reduction of CO 2 into CO or other useful hydrocarbons (e.g., C 1 and C ≥2 products), as well as reduction of N 2 into ammonia, can greatly help in this regard. Various materials have been developed for the reduction of CO 2 and N 2 . The introduction of pores in these materials by porosity engineering has been demonstrated to be highly effective in increasing the efficiency of the involved redox reactions, over 40% increment for CO 2 reduction to date, by providing an increased number of exposed facets, kinks, edges, and catalytically active sites of catalysts. By shaping the surface porous structure, the selectivity of the redox reaction can also be enhanced. In order to better understand this area benefiting rational design for future solutions, this review systematically summarizes and constructively discusses the porosity engineering in catalytic materials, including various synthesis methods, characterization of porous materials, and the effects of porosity on performance of CO 2 reduction and N 2 reduction.

A new paradigm for photocatalysts based on two different hierarchically structured honeycomb and porous cylindrical Au-ZnO heterostructures was successfully developed via a straightforward and cost-effective hydrothermal method under different preparation conditions, which can be promising for industrial applications. The photocatalytic performance of all as-prepared samples under the illumination of sunlight was evaluated by the photocatalytic degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) and malachite green (MG) aqueous solutions. The results show that the photocatalytic degradation efficiency of RhB and MG was 55.3% and 40.7% for ZnO, 95.3% and 93.4% for the porous cylindrical Au-ZnO heterostructure, and 98.6% and 99.5% for the honeycomb Au-ZnO heterostructure, respectively. Compared with those from the ZnO, the results herein demonstrate an excellent reduction in the photoluminescence and improvement in the photocatalysis for the Au-ZnO hybrids with different morphologies. These results were attributed not only to the greatly improved sunlight utilization efficiency due to the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) absorption of Au nanoparticles in the visible region coupled with the UV light utilization by the ZnO nanostructures and multi-reflections of the incident light in the pore structures of their interior cavities but also to the high charge separation efficiency and low Schottky barrier generated by the combination of Au nanoparticles and ZnO micromaterials. Moreover, the honeycomb Au-ZnO heterostructure had a high Au content, surface area and surface oxygen vacancy (O V ), which enabled photocatalytic properties that were higher than those of the porous cylindrical Au-ZnO heterostructures. In addition, two different formation mechanisms for the morphology and possible photocatalytic mechanisms are proposed in this paper.

Background: Retinal degeneration (RD) is characterized by progressive photoreceptor degeneration, and emerging evidence has demonstrated that activated microglia-mediated inflammation exacerbates the progression of RD. Lipoxin A4 (LXA4) is an endogenous neuroprotective lipid mediator, but the potential therapeutic roles of LXA4 in RD have not been evaluated., Methods: Electroretinogram (ERG) recordings and behavioral tests were used to analyze whether the intravitreal injection (IVI) of LXA4 restored visual function in RD1 mice. Immunostaining, qPCR, western blotting and mouse cytokine arrays using an ex-vivo retinal explant model were successively performed to explore the mechanisms underlying the effects of LXA4., Results: The key rate-limiting enzyme in LXA4 biosynthesis and the LXA4 receptor were substantially downregulated in end-stage RD1 retinas. LXA4 maintained visual function in RD1 mice from postnatal days 15-21 (PN15 to PN21). Moreover, LXA4 modulated microglial activities, significantly inhibited proinflammatory gene expression, and thereby attenuated photoreceptor apoptosis., Conclusions: LXA4 delayed the progression of RD, and thus, the use of LXA4 might be a novel approach for ameliorating dysfunction in neurodegenerative disorders., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Inc. A competitive complexation strategy has been developed to construct a novel electrocatalyst with Zn-Co atomic pairs coordinated on N doped carbon support (Zn/CoN-C). Such architecture offers enhanced binding ability of O 2 , significantly elongates the O-O length (from 1.23 Å to 1.42 Å), and thus facilitates the cleavage of O-O bond, showing a theoretical overpotential of 0.335 V during ORR process. As a result, the Zn/CoN-C catalyst exhibits outstanding ORR performance in both alkaline and acid conditions with a half-wave potential of 0.861 and 0.796 V respectively. The in situ XANES analysis suggests Co as the active center during the ORR. The assembled zinc-air battery with Zn/CoN-C as cathode catalyst presents a maximum power density of 230 mW cm -2 along with excellent operation durability. TiO₂/Ag bilayer films sputtered onto a 2D polystyrene (PS) bead array in a magnetron sputtering system were found to form a nanocap-shaped nanostructure composed of a TiO₂-Ag composite on each PS bead, in which the Ag nanoparticles were trapped partially or fully in the TiO₂ matrix, depending on the TiO₂ thickness. X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) results showed the opposite shifts of binding energy for Ti 2p and Ag 3d, indicating the transfer of electrons from metallic Ag to TiO₂ owing to the Ag-O-TiO₂ composite formation. UV-Vis absorption spectra showed the blue shifts of the surface plasma resonance peaks, and the maximum absorption peak intensity was obtained for TiO₂ at 30 nm. The surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) peak intensity first increased and then decreased when the TiO₂ thickness changed. The observations of SERS, XPS, and UV-Vis absorption spectra were explained by the dependency of the charge-transfer process on TiO₂ thickness, which was ascribed to the changing dielectric properties in the metal/semiconductor system.

Durability is still one of the key obstacles for the further development of photocatalytic energy-conversion systems, especially low-dimensional ones. Encouragingly, recent studies show that nanoinsulators such as SiO 2 and MgO exhibit substantially enhanced photocatalytic durability than the typical semiconductor p25 TiO 2 . Extending this knowledge, MgO-Au plasmonic defect nanosystems are developed that combine the stable photoactivity from MgO surface defects with energy-focusing plasmonics from Au nanoparticles (NPs), where Au NPs are anchored onto monodispersed MgO nanotemplates. Theoretical calculations reveal that the midgap defect (MGD) states in MgO are generated by oxygen vacancies, which provide the main avenues for upward electron transitions under photoexcitation. These electrons drive stable proton photoreduction to H 2 gas via water splitting. A synergistic interaction between Au's localized plasmons and MgO's oxygen vacancies is observed here, which enhances MgO's photoactivity and stability simultaneously. Such co-enhancement is attributed to the stable longitudinal-plasmon-free Au NPs, which provide robust hot electrons capable of overcoming the interband transition barrier (≈1.8 eV) to reach proton reduction potential for H 2 generation. In this work, we report the enhanced catalytic reduction of 4-nitrophenol driven by Fe₃O₄-Au magnetic nanocomposite interface engineering. A facile solvothermal method is employed for Fe₃O₄ hollow microspheres and Fe₃O₄-Au magnetic nanocomposite synthesis via a seed deposition process. Complementary structural, chemical composition and valence state studies validate that the as-obtained samples are formed in a pure magnetite phase. A series of characterizations including conventional scanning/transmission electron microscopy (SEM/TEM), Mössbauer spectroscopy, magnetic testing and elemental mapping is conducted to unveil the structural and physical characteristics of the developed Fe₃O₄-Au magnetic nanocomposites. By adjusting the quantity of Au seeds coating on the polyethyleneimine-dithiocarbamates (PEI-DTC)-modified surfaces of Fe₃O₄ hollow microspheres, the correlation between the amount of Au seeds and the catalytic ability of Fe₃O₄-Au magnetic nanocomposites for 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) is investigated systematically. Importantly, bearing remarkable recyclable features, our developed Fe₃O₄-Au magnetic nanocomposites can be readily separated with a magnet. Such Fe₃O₄-Au magnetic nanocomposites shine the light on highly efficient catalysts for 4-NP reduction at the mass production level.

Nowadays, synthetic organic dyes and pigments discharged from numerous industries are causing unprecedentedly severe water environmental pollution, and conventional water treatment processes are hindered due to the corresponding sophisticated aromatic structures, hydrophilic nature, and high stability against light, temperature, etc. Herein, we report an efficient fabrication strategy to develop a new type of highly efficient, low-cost, and magnetically recoverable nanocatalyst, i.e., FePt⁻Ag nanocomposites, for the reduction of methyl orange (MO) and rhodamine B (RhB), by a facile seed deposition process. X-ray diffraction results elaborate that the as-synthesized FePt⁻Ag nanocomposites are pure disordered face-centered cubic phase. Transmission electron microscopy studies demonstrate that the amount of Ag seeds deposited onto the surfaces of FePt nanocrystals increases when increasing the additive amount of silver colloids. The linear correlation of the MO and RhB concentration versus reaction time catalyzed by FePt⁻Ag nanocatalysts is in line with pseudo-first-order kinetics. The reduction rate constants of MO and RhB increase with the increase of the amount of Ag seeds. FePt⁻Ag nanocomposites show good separation ability and reusability, and could be repeatedly applied for nearly complete reduction of MO and RhB for at least six successive cycles. We report the self-organization of universal branching patterns of oil nanodroplets under the Ouzo effect [Vitale S, Katz J (2003) Langmuir 19:4105-4110]-a phenomenon in which spontaneous droplet formation occurs upon dilution of an organic solution of oil with water. The mixing of the organic and aqueous phases is confined under a quasi-2D geometry. In a manner analogous to the ramification of ground stream networks [Devauchelle O, Petroff AP, Seybold HF, Rothman DH (2012) Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 109: 20832-20836 and Cohen Y, et al. (2015) Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 112:14132-14137] but on a scale 10 orders of magnitude smaller, the angles between the droplet branches are seen to exhibit remarkable universality, with a value around 74° ± 2°, independent of the various control parameters of the process. Numerical simulations reveal that these nanodroplet branching patterns are governed by the interplay between the local concentration gradient, diffusion, and collective interactions. We further demonstrate the ability of the local concentration gradient to drive autonomous motion of colloidal particles in the highly confined space, and the possibility of using the nucleated nanodroplets for nanoextraction of a hydrophobic solute. The understanding obtained from this work provides a basis for quantitatively understanding the complex dynamical aspects associated with the Ouzo effect. We expect that this will facilitate improved control in nanodroplet formation for many applications, spanning from the preparation of pharmaceutical polymeric carriers, to the formulation of cosmetics and insecticides, to the fabrication of nanostructured materials, to the concentration and separation of trace analytes in liquid-liquid microextraction., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.

Toroidal microstructures of nanocolloidal assemblies promise important applications ranging from sensing, catalysis, drug delivery, and separation. In this work, we will first investigate the rich dissolution dynamics of a droplet comprising a nanoparticle suspension in a binary solution, and then show that the dissolution dynamics can be a potential approach to assembling a wide range of colloids with microtoroids. As the sessile droplet dissolves in the binary solution of miscible and immiscible solvents, two simultaneous effects are observed: if the dissolution rate is sufficiently high under large concentrations of the cosolvent in the surrounding solution, a strong plume emanates from the droplet pole as a consequence of a body force (i.e. the Korteweg force) driven by the chemical potential gradient between the water in the droplet and in the surrounding phase. Concurrently, the convection drives internal recirculation flow dynamics, leading to the inversion of the droplet curvature such that its initially spherical shape gradually contracts to evolve into a toroidal structure. We further demonstrate that the dissolution of a suspension droplet is an approach to assemble nanoparticles into toroidal microstructures. The resultant toroidal shapes are extrinsically governed by the composition and the geometrical confinement of the surrounding solution phase.

In this work, we investigated the kinetic balance between ammonia-catalyzed hydrolysis of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) and subsequent condensation over the growth of silica particles in the Stöber method. Our results reveal that, at the initial stage, the reaction is dictated by TEOS hydrolysis to form silanol monomers, which is denoted as pathway I and is responsible for nucleation and growth of small silica particles via condensation of neighboring silanol monomers and siloxane network clusters derived thereafter. Afterward, the reaction is dictated by condensation of newly formed silanol monomers onto the earlier formed silica particles, which is denoted as pathway II and is responsible for the enlargement in size of silica particles. When TEOS hydrolysis is significantly promoted, either at high ammonia concentration (≥0.95 M) or at low ammonia concentration in the presence of LiOH as secondary catalyst, temporal separation of pathways I and II makes the Stöber method reminiscent of in situ seeded growth. This knowledge advance enables us not only to reconcile the most prevailing aggregation-only and monomer-addition models in literature into one consistent framework to interpret the Stöber process but also to grow monodisperse silica particles with sizes in the range 15-230 nm simply but precisely regulated by the ammonia concentration with the aid of LiOH.

In the process of solvent exchange, oil droplets nucleate and grow on a solid substrate in response to the oversaturation generated through the displacement of a good oil solvent by a poor one. The mean size of the droplets depends on flow rate, flow geometry and solution conditions. In this work, we investigate the surface coverage of the droplets and the correlation between the base area of the droplets and of the bare zone surrounding the droplets for various flow and solution conditions during the solvent exchange. The surface coverage increases with the increase in the flow rate, channel height and the oil concentration, and reaches a plateau between 35% and 50%. The spatial correlation is analysed with the help of the radial distribution function g(r) and a Voronoi tessellation. When the surface coverage reaches ∼25-30%, the number density of the droplets starts to drop, reflecting the mutual interaction and merging of the droplets. With further decrease in the droplet spacing and increase in surface coverage, the Voronoi analysis shows that the base area of the droplets increases linearly with the area size of the depleted zone. The collective interaction in the growth of surface nanodroplets is universal, independent of the specific conditions that control the droplet growth.

Understanding the microwettability of anisotropic molybdenum disulfide crystal is critically important in separation and processing of this material in liquid. In this work, static microwetting properties of MoS 2 face (MF) and MoS 2 edge (ME) surfaces in water are revealed by the morphology of femtoliter interfacial droplets. The oil droplets with different size distribution were produced from heterogeneous nucleation and growth of nanodroplets during the solvent exchange under controlled flow and solution conditions, and were polymerized for droplet morphology characterization to reveal the relative wettability of the droplets on surfaces. We first demonstrate that the shape of the nanodroplets is responsive to the surface charges on a model pH sensitive substrate of gold coated with a self-assembled monolayer of two types of thiol. The experimental results on MoS 2 substrates indicate that (1) oil contact angle of the droplets on ME surface is much larger than that on MF surface at pH 3.0, suggesting that the ME surface is more hydrophilic than MF; (2) the droplets are pinned by the layered nanostructure on MoS 2 edge. The fundamental understanding of microwettability elucidated in this study may allow for an improved control of the interaction between anisotropic MoS 2 surfaces and the surrounding liquid environment, which is critically important for many industrial applications such as flotation and catalysis systems.

Manipulating the way a droplet shrinks by evaporation or dissolution is an effective approach for assembling dissolved nanomaterials. In this work, we investigate the dissolution dynamics of a submicroliter sessile droplet of electrolyte aqueous solution and of graphene oxide suspension immersed in a binary mixture of solvents, among which one is miscible and the other is immiscible with water (i.e., an Ouzo system). Our measurements reveal an interesting two-stage dissolution of the droplet: a fast initial stage and a slow second stage. The duration of the first stage is longer at a lower temperature, leading to a counterintuitive result that the dissolution completes faster at reduced temperature. The presence of graphene oxide in the droplet dramatically alters the dissolution dynamics, possibly due to its enrichment at the droplet surface. The finding from this work provides useful guideline for designing conditions to pack nanomaterials by dissolving droplets, especially for those temperature sensitive components.

Strains of Lactobacillus bulgaricus and Angel Yeast were combined to ferment raw pork and make pork jerky. After fermentation, the jerky was dried and then tested for sensory evaluation, pH and free amino acid content. The results showed that the optimal conditions for fermentation using L. bulgaricus and Angel Yeast were: a pH of 6.5, a 1:1 (v/v) ratio of L. bulgaricus to Angel Yeast, a fermentation time of 42 h and temperature of 25 °C. The results showed that the pork jerky fermented with the combined strains was not very sour which was close to the pH of 7.0 and had a higher free amino acid content which was more than 68.3 mg/100 g compared with the pork jerky fermented by either L. bulgaricus or Angel Yeast alone. Overall, the results demonstrate that fermentation of raw pork with combined strains of L. bulgaricus and Angel Yeast improves the quality and flavor of pork jerky.

Solvent exchange is a simple process of forming surface nanodroplets on an immersed substrate. In this process, the droplets nucleate and grow in response to transient oversaturation when a good solvent of the droplet liquid is displaced by a poor solvent. Here we will show how the final droplet size is influenced by solution composition in the solvent exchange. To do this, we produced water droplets on a hydrophilic substrate and cyclohexane droplets on a hydrophobic substrate by using a tertiary system of cyclohexane, ethanol, and water. The composition of the good solvent was varied systematically in the one-phase region on the phase diagram. We found that the key feature closely related to the droplet size is the area (A) in the phase diagram defined by the phase boundary and the concentration ratio between the good solvent and the droplet liquid. This area reflects the excessive amount of droplet liquid in the tertiary mixture, which can be complicated by bulk droplet formation during solvent exchange. We will also show that the droplet volume per unit surface area also increases with A. The findings from this work will provide guideline for the selection of solution conditions to achieve a desirable droplet size and number density on the surface.

A unique CdS/C@Fe3O4 nanoreactor was fabricated by the surface-imprinting technique, which effectively enhances the recyclability, stability, and selectivity for orientation recognition and photodegradation of ciprofloxacin in the binary mixed solution under visible-light irradiation. Nanoscale droplets at a solid-liquid interface are of high relevance for many fundamental phenomena and applied processes. The solvent exchange process is a simple approach to produce, e.g., oil nanodroplets over a large surface area on a substrate, by exchange oil-saturated ethanol by oil-saturated water, which has a lower oil solubility than ethanol. In this process, the size of the nanodroplets is closely related to the flow conditions. To achieve control of the droplet size, it is essential to fully understand the nucleation and growth of nanodroplets under different flow conditions. In this work, we investigate the gravitational effect on the droplet formation by the solvent exchange. We compared the droplet size as the substrate was placed on the upper or lower wall in a horizontal fluid channel or on the sides of a vertical channel with an upward or downward flow. We found significant difference in the droplet size for the three substrate positions in a wide channel with height h = 0.21 mm. The difference of droplet size was eliminated in a narrow channel with height h = 0.07 mm. The relevant dimensional control parameter for the occurrence of the gravitational effects is the Archimedes number Ar and these two heights correspond to Ar = 10 and Ar = 0.35, respectively. The gravitational effects lead to a nonsymmetric parabolic profile of the mixing front, with the velocity maximum being off-center and thus with different distances α(Ar)h and (1 - α(Ar))h to the lower and upper wall, respectively. The ratio of the total droplet volume on the lower and upper wall is theoretically found to be (α(Ar)/(1 - α(Ar)))(3). This study thus improves our understanding of the mechanism of the solvent exchange process, providing guidelines for tailoring the volume of surface nanodroplets.

Solvent exchange is a simple process to form oil nanodroplets at solid-liquid interfaces with well-defined location and morphology. In this process, a good solvent of the oil is displaced by a poor solvent, leading to the nucleation and growth of oil droplets from a transient oversaturation at the mixing front. Our recent work has shown that the final volume of the droplets is related to the flow conditions. In this work, we investigate the effects of the type and the composition of solvents on the droplet formation under the same flow conditions. Water nanodroplets were produced by ethanol/cyclohexane (solution A) and cyclohexane (solution B) on a hydrophilic substrate. We found that the droplet size increases first and then decreases with an increase of the initial ethanol concentration in solution A. This is attributed to the phase separation of ethanol-cyclohexane-water; in particular, the composition of solution A on the phase boundary above the Ouzo region. The same reason also contributes to the lower efficiency in droplet formation for a longer alkane. The important implication from this work is that the maximal droplet volume is limited by the phase separation of the solvents used in the solvent exchange.

Nanodroplets on a solid surface (i.e., surface nanodroplets) have practical implications for high-throughput chemical and biological analysis, lubrications, laboratory-on-chip devices, and near-field imaging techniques. Oil nanodroplets can be produced on a solid-liquid interface in a simple step of solvent exchange in which a good solvent of oil is displaced by a poor solvent. In this work, we experimentally and theoretically investigate the formation of nanodroplets by the solvent exchange process under well-controlled flow conditions. We find significant effects from the flow rate and the flow geometry on the droplet size. We develop a theoretical framework to account for these effects. The main idea is that the droplet nuclei are exposed to an oil oversaturation pulse during the exchange process. The analysis shows that the volume of the nanodroplets increases with the Peclet number Pe of the flow as ∝ Pe(3/4), which is in good agreement with our experimental results. In addition, at fixed flow rate and thus fixed Peclet number, larger and less homogeneously distributed droplets formed at less-narrow channels, due to convection effects originating from the density difference between the two solutions of the solvent exchange. The understanding from this work provides valuable guidelines for producing surface nanodroplets with desired sizes by controlling the flow conditions.
