Background: Colombia has a mestizo population and the prevalence of haemoglobin variants varies according to each region, but heterozygous carriers can be found in all of them., Aim: To characterise sickle cell disease (SCD) haematologically, biochemically, and molecularly, and detect classic haplotypes by DNA sequencing in a group of samples from Bolívar, Colombia., Subjects and Methods: Blood samples were collected after informed consent from volunteers from eight communities in the Bolívar department, plus samples from the Pacific region, Providencia Island, and Bogotá were included. Data were obtained from: (1) haematological analyses; (2) biochemical tests: dHPLC was used to determine haemoglobin (Hb); and (3) DNA sequencing data through five SNPs., Results: 101 samples were identified by rs334 through Sanger's Sequencing, structural haemoglobinopathies HbAS (34.65%), HbSS (2.97%) and HbAC (1.98%) were found. When contrasting the Hb identification results between SNP rs334 Vs. dHPLC/Isoelectric Focusing (IEF), a coincidence was found in 39/43 samples analysed, therefore, when comparing these techniques, a significant correlation was found (Pearson's correlation coefficient r  = 0.998). 26 samples previously analysed by rs334 were classified into classical haplotypes CAR (50.0%), BEN (30.76%), CAM (7.69%), SEN (3.84%), and ATP-I (7.69%)., Conclusions: SCD characterisation and SNPs-based classification through Sanger's DNA sequencing have not been performed before in Colombia. The results of this work will make it possible to expand the data or records of carriers and those affected, which will benefit patients and their families.

Sickle cell anemia is a type of hemoglobinopathy characterized by a specific mutation in the beta globin gene with the consequent generation of an unstable hemoglobin that crystallizes in a state of hypoxia. This causes a change in the structure of the red blood cell, which ends up producing vaso-occlusion with the corresponding clinical complications for the patient. Worldwide, various diagnostic tests have been developed that allow the appropriate approach to the affected patient. These include techniques for the determination of hemoglobin and the use of molecular markers, among others. There are new therapeutic alternatives to the use of hydroxyurea and L-glutamine, such as the use of gene therapy tools. The most recent experimental trials are exploring gene editing techniques.

Objective: To analyze a medical prescription from the 18th century in the New Kingdom of Granada, nowadays Colombia, used in the treatment of soft tissue injuries, specifically wounds and skin ulcers., Method: A documentary search was conducted in the Cipriano Rodríguez Santamaria Historical Archive of the Octavio Arizmendi Posada Library, at Universidad de La Sabana (Chía, Colombia), and a review of the literature available in electronic databases., Results and Conclusion: The colonial medical prescription mentions the benefits of lead acetate in poultice for inflammatory processes in general and skin alterations. The 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11.2DS) is present in approximately 5 to 8% of patients with cleft lip, palate, or both (CL/P) and 75 to 80% of patients with congenital heart disease (CHD). In a literature review, we consider this association of 22q11.2DS in pediatric patients with CL/P and CHD. Early diagnosis of 22q11.2DS in pediatric patients with CL/P and CHD helps to optimize a multidisciplinary treatment approach for 22q11DS. It is important to know that for a long time, the mechanism through which those plants worked was unknown, making herbal medicine a purely empirical science. Medical prescriptions in the 19 th century in the Kingdom of Nueva Granada were considered a significant medical advance as a result of knowledge and medical practices in the old continent. Medical literature of the time achieved, despite the lack of studies, the development of new schemes with exact dosages and new therapeutic possibilities. The medical prescription presented in this article was used in the management of heart palpitations, a frequent symptom nowadays, described as thoracic and/or neck beating, underlying various cardiac and non-cardiac diseases. The recipe for the palpitations of the historical archive "Cipriano Rodríguez Santa María" is a mixture of herbal agents that, as reviewed in the medical literature, showed to have anti-inflammatory, anxiolytic, and antioxidant effects, among others, allowing a beneficial effect on cardiac palpitations. Due to the lack of information on the posology, safety in its use, contraindications, and possible adverse effects, its potential use should have been underestimated at that time for the control of palpitations or as phytochemical agents directed to treat diseases causing this symptom., (Copyright: © 2020 Permanyer.)

Glial cells (also known as glia or neuroglia) are structures which are found in large numbers throughout the nervous system, fulfilling multiple functions, such as regulating the synapses, providing structure, support and nutrition, contributing towards the immune response and tissue oxygenation. Knowledge regarding glial cells has increased during the last few years, since Virchow defined them as supporting connective tissue, followed by Ramón y Cajal who described them as tissue in themselves, until today when a first order physiological role has been recognised for them and a leading role in the appearance and progression of various pathological processes, primarily in the group of Neurodegenerative Diseases (ND). The ND represents a group of pathologies which gradually cause the degeneration of nervous tissue, have a broad spectrum regarding their appearance and, in some cases, are the direct consequence of genetic alterations leading to physiological changes in the nervous system. The present article has thus been aimed at describing glial cells' genetic interaction with ND through a systemic review of the pertinent literature. The mechanisms through which the different classes of glial cells become involved in the appearance of ND are poorly understood; however, evidence indicates that their role could be a critical factor in these pathologies' appearance, regulation and chronicity, these being largely determined by different types of cellular interactions and interaction with the microenvironment. Objectives: To present descriptive epidemiology of Orofacial Clefts and to determine the association of syndromic forms with antenatal high-risk conditions, preterm birth, and comorbidities among nested-series of cases., Methods: A study of nested-series of cases was conducted. Frequencies of cleft type, associated congenital anomalies, syndromic, non-syndromic and multiple malformation forms, and distribution of Orofacial Clefts according to sex and affected-side were determined. Odds ratios were calculated as measures of association between syndromic forms and antenatal high-risk conditions, preterm birth and comorbidities. A total of three hundred and eleven patients with Orofacial Clefts were assessed in a 12-month period., Results: The most frequent type of Orofacial Clefts was cleft lip and palate, this type of cleft was more frequent in males, whereas cleft palate occurred more often in females. The most common cases occurred as non-syndromic forms. Aarskog-Scott syndrome showed the highest frequency amongst syndromic forms. Hypertensive disorders in pregnancy, developmental dysplasia of the hip, central nervous diseases and respiratory failure showed significant statistical associations (p <0.05) with syndromic forms., Conclusions: These data provide an epidemiological reference of Orofacial Clefts in Colombia. Novel associations between syndromic forms and clinical variables are determined. In order to investigate causality relationships between these variables further studies must be carried out.

Introduction: The totally extraperitoneal endoscopic approach in the surgery of the inguinal hernia has experienced an important change, enabling a mesh to be implanted in the pre-peritoneal space with a comfortable access, as well as contributing to the advantages of minimally invasive surgery (less post-operative pain and a faster recovery). The objective of this study is to analyse the results of TEP endoscopic hernioplasty, mainly in the repair of bilateral hernias and recurrences or multiple recurrences., Material and Methods: A total of 250 TEP endoscopic hernioplasties have been performed on 150 patients in the las 5 years. The majority (63%) of the patients subjected to surgery had bilateral hernias, and 16%, recurrent. Large and complicated iguinal-scrotal hernias were excluded. A short stay regimen was followed, establishing a protocol of, analgesia, antibiotic, antithrombotic prophylaxis, and collection of post-surgical data such as analgesia demand. The patients were given a questionnaire on discharge, in which they filled in the fields on post-surgical pain, as well as an attached satisfaction questionnaire., Results: The reduced need for post-surgical analgesia was noteworthy in this series, being totally unnecessary at 24h in 70 patients (46.6%), reaching 121 (80.6%) one month after surgery. There were 6 cases (4%) of reconversion, always due to opening of the peritoneal sac. There were no wound infections, 2% mild orchiepididymitis, 6 (2.4%) recurrence, and one (0.4%) inguinal neuralgia. There was a high level of satisfaction (95%)., Conclusions: TEP endoscopic hernioplasty is a very effective and safe procedure in the hands of experienced surgeons with specific training. It is an interesting option in bliateral and recurrent hernia as it obtains satisfactory results in terms of postoperative pain and morbidity., (Copyright © 2011 AEC. Published by Elsevier Espana.
