In this paper, we present the total column water vapour (TCWV) retrieval for the TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) observations in the visible blue spectral band. The TROPOMI TCWV algorithm is being optimized and validated in the framework of the Sentinel 5 Precursor Product Algorithm Laboratory (S5P-PAL) project from the European Space Agency (ESA). The retrieval was first developed to retrieve TCWV from the Global Ozone Monitoring Experiment 2 (GOME-2). We have optimized the settings of the retrieval to adapt it for TROPOMI observations. The TROPOMI TCWV algorithm follows the typical two step approach, using spectral fit retrieval of slant columns, and conversion of the slant columns to vertical columns using air mass factors (AMFs). An iterative optimization algorithm is developed to dynamically find the optimal a priori water vapour profile for the AMF calculation. Further optimizations on the spectral retrieval, air mass factor calculations as well as a new surface albedo retrieval approach are implemented. The TCWV retrieval algorithm is applied to TROPOMI observations from May 2018 to May 2021. The results are validated by comparing them to ERA5 reanalysis data, GOME-2, MODerate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and Special Sensor Microwave Imager Sounder (SSMIS) satellite observations. TCWV derived from TROPOMI observations agree well with the other data sets with Pearson correlation coefficient (R) ranging from 0.96 to 0.99. The mean bias between TROPOMI and ERA5 data is -1.24 kg m -2 for measurements over land and 0.73 kg m -2 for measurements over water. The comparison to MODIS observations show similar results with small dry bias of 1.51,kg m -2 for measurements over land and a small wet bias of 1.25 kg m -2 for measurements over water. Slightly larger dry bias of 1.98 kg m -2 for measurements over land and 1.74 kg m -2 for measurements over water are found when compared to GOME-2 obserations. Compared to SSMIS data over water, TROPOMI observations are bias low by 3.25 kg m -2 . The small discrepancies found between TROPOMI and reference data sets are related to the differences in measurement technique, measurement time, surface albedo issue, as well as cloud and aerosol contamination. This study demonstrates that the algorithm can provide stable and consistent results on a global scale and can be applied to generate operational TCWV products from TROPOMI and the forthcoming Copernicus missions Sentinel-4 and Sentinel-5. We have also demonstrated the capability of retrieving fine scale water vapour structures in a case study over the Amazon. Since its first confirmed case in December 2019, coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has become a worldwide pandemic with more than 90 million confirmed cases by January 2021. Countries around the world have enforced lockdown measures to prevent the spread of the virus, introducing a temporal change of air pollutants such as nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) that are strongly related to transportation, industry, and energy. In this study, NO 2 variations over regions with strong responses to COVID-19 are analysed using datasets from the Global Ozone Monitoring Experiment-2 (GOME-2) sensor aboard the EUMETSAT Metop satellites and TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) aboard the EU/ESA Sentinel-5 Precursor satellite. The global GOME-2 and TROPOMI NO 2 datasets are generated at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) using harmonized retrieval algorithms; potential influences of the long-term trend and seasonal cycle, as well as the short-term meteorological variation, are taken into account statistically. We present the application of the GOME-2 data to analyze the lockdown-related NO 2 variations for morning conditions. Consistent NO 2 variations are observed for the GOME-2 measurements and the early afternoon TROPOMI data: regions with strong social responses to COVID-19 in Asia, Europe, North America, and South America show strong NO 2 reductions of ∼ 30-50% on average due to restriction of social and economic activities, followed by a gradual rebound with lifted restriction measures., Supplementary Information: The online version contains supplementary material available at 10.1007/s11869-021-01046-2., Competing Interests: Conflict of interestThe authors declare no competing interests., (© The Author(s) 2021.)

The Global Energy and Water cycle Exchanges (GEWEX) Data and Assessments Panel (GDAP) initiated the GEWEX Water Vapor Assessment (G-VAP), which has the main objectives to quantify the current state of art in water vapour products being constructed for climate applications and to support the selection process of suitable water vapour products by GDAP for its production of globally consistent water and energy cycle products. During the construction of the G-VAP data archive, freely available and mature satellite and reanalysis data records with a minimum temporal coverage of 10 years were considered. The archive contains total column water vapour (TCWV) as well as specific humidity and temperature at four pressure levels (1000, 700, 500, 300 hPa) from 22 different data records. All data records were remapped to a regular longitude/latitude grid of 2°x2°. The archive consists of four different folders: 22 TCWV data records covering the period 2003-2008, 11 TCWV data records covering the period 1988-2008, as well as seven specific humidity and seven temperature data records covering the period 1988-2009. Within G-VAP, the characterisation of water vapour products is, among other ways, achieved through intercomparisons of the considered data records, as a whole and grouped into three classes of predominant retrieval condition: clear-sky, cloudy-sky and all-sky. Associated results are shown using the 22 TCWV data records. The standard deviations among the 22 TCWV data records have been analysed and exhibit distinct maxima over central Africa and the tropical warm pool (in absolute terms) as well as over the poles and mountain regions (in relative terms). Since 1995, the Global Ozone Monitoring Experiment (GOME) has measured solar and backscattered spectra in the ultraviolet and visible wavelength range. Now, the extensive data set of the most important calibration parameters has been investigated thoroughly in order to analyze the long-term stability and performance of the instrument. This study focuses on GOME in-flight calibration and degradation for the solar path. Monitoring the sensor degradation yields an intensity decrease of 70% to 90% in 240-316 nm and 35% to 65% in 311-415 nm. The spectral calibration is very stable over the whole period, although a very complex interaction between predisperser temperature and wavelength was found. The leakage current and the pixel-to-pixel gain increased significantly during the mission, which requires an accurate correction of the measured radiance and irradiance signals using proper calibration parameters. Finally, several outliers in the data sets can be directly assigned to instrument and satellite anomalies.

The new generation of earth observation satellites carries advanced sensors that will gather very precise data for studying the Earth system and global climate. This paper shows that neural network methods can be successfully used for solving forward and inverse remote sensing problems, providing both accurate and fast solutions. Two examples of multi-neural network systems for the determination of cloud properties and for the retrieval of total columns of ozone using satellite data are presented. The developed algorithms based on multi-neural network are currently being used for the operational processing of European atmospheric satellite sensors and will play a key role in related satellite missions planed for the near future.

The global ozone monitoring experiment (GOME) was launched in April 1995, and the GOME data processor (GDP) retrieval algorithm has processed operational total ozone amounts since July 1995. GDP level 1-to-2 is based on the two-step differential optical absorption spectroscopy (DOAS) approach, involving slant column fitting followed by air mass factor (AMF) conversions to vertical column amounts. We present a major upgrade of this algorithm to version 3.0. GDP 3.0 was implemented in July 2002, and the 9-year GOME data record from July 1995 to December 2004 has been processed using this algorithm. The key component in GDP 3.0 is an iterative approach to AMF calculation, in which AMFs and corresponding vertical column densities are adjusted to reflect the true ozone distribution as represented by the fitted DOAS effective slant column. A neural network ensemble is used to optimize the fast and accurate parametrization of AMFs. We describe results of a recent validation exercise for the operational version of the total ozone algorithm; in particular, seasonal and meridian errors are reduced by a factor of 2. On a global basis, GDP 3.0 ozone total column results lie between -2% and +4% of ground-based values for moderate solar zenith angles lower than 70 degrees. A larger variability of about +5% and -8% is observed for higher solar zenith angles up to 90 degrees.
