Understanding how potential regulation affects ammonium transformation in bioanodes is crucial for promoting their application. This study explored the performance, electrochemical properties, electromicrobiome of bioanodes across potentials from 0.0 V to 0.4 V vs. standard hydrogen electrode (SHE). Higher anode potentials enhanced the performance of electroactive biofilms and ammonium removal but suppressed nitrite oxidation while favoring dissimilatory nitrate reduction (DNRA), leading to increased nitrite accumulation. A reduction in nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) and an increase in DNRA-related genes resulted in an optimal nitrite-to-ammonium ratio of 1.32 for the Anammox process. Higher anodic potentials (0.3 and 0.4 V) were less effective for TN removal than lower potentials (0, 0.1, and 0.2 V), likely due to increased NOB and denitrification genes at lower potentials enhancing nitrite oxidation and denitrification. The widespread production and consumption of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) present significant ecological challenges, including chronic exposure to humans, microplastic releases, and climate changes. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of innovative strategies for PVC waste conversions through biotic degradation and chemical approaches (e.g. thermolysis, photocatalysis, and electrocatalysis). We critically analyze the challenges and opportunities associated with each recycling/upcycling method of PVC, evaluating five representative techniques-microbial degradation, thermolysis, photocatalysis, and electrocatalysis, based on their environmental impacts, economic viability, and industrial relevance. While microbial degradation shows promise for energy-efficient PVC degradation, it lacks effective metabolic pathways and high-efficiency enzymes. Thermolysis emerges as the most recommended method for PVC recycling/upcycling due to its ease of implementation, operational simplicity, and valuable products, and acceptance for large-scale applications. The Zero discharge technology has become an important pathroute for sustainable development of high salt wastewater treatment. However, the cohabitation of organic and inorganic debris can cause serious problems such membrane clogging and the formation of hazardous impurity salts that further restrict the recovery of all salt varieties by evaporating and crystallizing. In highly salinized wastewater, biological treatments offer advantages in terms of cost and sustainability when used as a pre-treatment step to eliminate organic debris. On the other hand, high salinity is always a major obstacle to microbial diversity, abundance, and activity, which can result in low organic matter removal effectiveness or the failure of the microbial treatment system. Biofortification techniques can attenuate the negative effects of salt stress and other unfavourable conditions on microorganisms, while the regulation mechanisms of microbial and community collaboration by fortification methods have been an open question. Therefore, a comprehensive summary of the types, mechanisms, and effects of the major biofortification techniques is proposed. This review dialyzes the characteristics and sources of hypersaline wastewater and the main treatment methods. Then, the mechanisms of microbial salt tolerance are summarized and discussed based on microbial characteristics and the protective effects provided by the processes. Finally, the research and application of the main bioaugmentation methods are developed in detail, describing the characteristics, advantages and disadvantages of the different enhancement methods in their implementation. To recover methane from waste activated sludge through anaerobic digestion (AD) is one promising alternative to achieve carbon neutrality for wastewater treatment plants. However, humic acids (HAs) are one of the major compositions in waste activated sludge, and their accumulation performs inhibition effects on AD. This study investigated the potentials of biochar (BC) in alleviating inhibition effects of HAs on AD. Results showed that although the accumulated HAs reduced methane yield by 9.37% compared to control, the highest methane yield, 132.6 mL CH 4 /g VSS, was obtained after adding BC, which was 45.9% higher than that in HA group. Mechanism analysis showed that BC promoted the activities of hydrolase such as protease and α-glucosidase, which were 69.7% and 29.7% higher than those in HA group, respectively. The conversion of short-chain fatty acids was accelerated. In addition, the evolutions of electroactive microorganisms like Clostridium_sensu_stricto_13 and Methanosaeta were consistent with the activitiies of electron transfer and the contents of cytochrome c. Furthermore, parts of HAs rather than all of them were adsorbed by BC, and the remaining free HAs and BC formed synergistic effects on methanogenesis, then both CO 2 reduction and acetoclastic methanogenesis pathways were improved. The inoculum has a crucial impact on bioreactor initialization and performance. However, there is currently a lack of guidance on selecting appropriate inocula for applications in environmental biotechnology. In this study, we applied microbial electrolysis cells (MECs) as models to investigate the differences in the functional potential of electroactive microorganisms (EAMs) within anodic biofilms developed from four different inocula (natural or artificial), using shotgun metagenomic techniques. We specifically focused on extracellular electron transfer (EET) function and stress resistance, which affect the performance and stability of MECs. Community profiling revealed that the family Geobacteraceae was the key EAM taxon in all biofilms, with Geobacter as the dominant genus. The c-type cytochrome gene imcH showed universal importance for Geobacteraceae EET and was utilized as a marker gene to evaluate the EET potential of EAMs. Additionally, stress response functional genes were used to assess the stress resistance potential of Geobacter species. Comparative analysis of imcH gene abundance revealed that EAMs with comparable overall EET potential could be enriched from artificial and natural inocula (P > 0.05). However, quantification of stress response gene copy numbers in the genomes demonstrated that EAMs originating from natural inocula possessed superior stress resistance potential (196 vs. 163). Waste polypropylene (PP) presents a significant environmental challenge, owing to its refractory nature and inert C-C backbone. In this study, we introduce a practical chemical recovery strategy from PP waste using a mild catalyst-free hydrothermal treatment (HT). The treatment converts 64.1% of the processed PP into dissolved organic products within 2 h in an air atmosphere at 160 °C. Higher temperatures increase the PP conversion efficiency. Distinct electron absorption and emission characteristics of the products are identified by spectral analysis. Fourier transform-ion cyclotron resonance-mass spectrometry (FT-ICR-MS) reveals the oxidative cracking of PP into shorter-chain homologues (10-50 carbon atoms) containing carboxylic and carbonyl groups. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations support a reaction pathway involving thermal C-H oxidation at the tertiary carbon sites in the polymer chain. The addition of 1% H 2 O 2 further enhances the oxidation reaction to produce valuable short-chain acetic acids, enabling gram-scale recycling of both pure PP and disposable surgical masks from the real world. Techno-economic analysis (TEA) and environmental life cycle costing (E-LCC) analysis suggest that this hydrothermal oxidation recovery technology is financially viable, which shows significant potential in tackling the ongoing plastic pollution crisis and advancing plastic treatment methodologies toward a circular economy paradigm.

Background: Microbial anaerobic metabolism is a key driver of biogeochemical cycles, influencing ecosystem function and health of both natural and engineered environments. However, the temporal dynamics of the intricate interactions between microorganisms and the organic metabolites are still poorly understood. Leveraging metagenomic and metabolomic approaches, we unveiled the principles governing microbial metabolism during a 96-day anaerobic bioreactor experiment., Results: During the turnover and assembly of metabolites, homogeneous selection was predominant, peaking at 84.05% on day 12. Consistent dynamic coordination between microbes and metabolites was observed regarding their composition and assembly processes. Our findings suggested that microbes drove deterministic metabolite turnover, leading to consistent molecular conversions across parallel reactors. Moreover, due to the more favorable thermodynamics of N-containing organic biotransformations, microbes preferentially carried out sequential degradations from N-containing to S-containing compounds. Similarly, the metabolic strategy of C18 lipid-like molecules could switch from synthesis to degradation due to nutrient exhaustion and thermodynamical disadvantage. This indicated that community biotransformation thermodynamics emerged as a key regulator of both catabolic and synthetic metabolisms, shaping metabolic strategy shifts at the community level. Furthermore, the co-occurrence network of microbes-metabolites was structured around microbial metabolic functions centered on methanogenesis, with CH 4 as a network hub, connecting with 62.15% of total nodes as 1st and 2nd neighbors. Microbes aggregate molecules with different molecular traits and are modularized depending on their metabolic abilities. They established increasingly positive relationships with high-molecular-weight molecules, facilitating resource acquisition and energy utilization. This metabolic complementarity and substance exchange further underscored the cooperative nature of microbial interactions., Conclusions: All results revealed three key rules governing microbial anaerobic degradation. These rules indicate that microbes adapt to environmental conditions according to their community-level metabolic trade-offs and synergistic metabolic functions, further driving the deterministic dynamics of molecular composition. In environmental matrices, the migration and distribution of contaminants at water-solid interfaces play a crucial role in their capture or dissemination. Scientists working in environmental remediation and wastewater treatment are increasingly aware of metal-contaminant coordination; however, interfacial behaviors remain underexplored. Here, we show that trivalent metal ions (e.g. Al 3+ and Fe 3+ ) mediate the migration of pollutant ligands (e.g. tetracycline (TC) and ofloxacin) to the organic solid interface. In the absence of Al 3+ , humic acid (HA) colloids (50 mg/L) capture 26.1 % of the TC in water (initial concentration: 10 mg/L) via weak intermolecular interactions (binding energy: -5.71 kcal/mol). Adding Al 3+ (2.5 mg/L) significantly enhances the binding of TC to an impressive 94.2 % via Al 3+ mediated coordination (binding energy: -84.89 kcal/mol). The significant increase in binding energy results in superior interfacial immobilization. However, excess free Al 3+ competes for TC binding via direct binary coordination, as confirmed based on the unique fluorescence of Al 3+ -TC complexes. Density functional theory calculations reveal the intricate process of HA-Al 3+ binding via carboxyl and phenolic hydroxyl sites. The HA-Al 3+ flocs then leverage the remaining coordination capacity of Al 3+ to chelate with TC. Biochar has been used to enhance methane generation from anaerobic digestion through establishing direct interspecific electron transfer between microorganisms. However, the microbial communication is still inadequate, thereby limiting further methane production improvement contributed by biochar. This study investigated the roles of quorum-sensing molecules, acylated homoserine lactone (AHL), in anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge aided by biochar. Results showed that the co-addition of separated biochar and AHL achieved best methane production performance, with the maximal methane yield of 154.7 mL/g volatile suspended solids, which increased by 51.9%, 47.2%, 17.9%, and 39.4% respectively compared to that of control, AHL-loaded biochar, sole AHL, and sole biochar groups. The reason was that the co-addition of separated biochar and AHL promoted the stages of hydrolysis and acidification, promoting the conversion of organic matters and short-chain fatty acids, and optimizing the accumulation of acetate acid. Moreover, the methanogenesis stage also performed best among experimental groups. Correspondingly, the highest activities of electron transfer and coenzyme F420 were obtained, with increase ratios of 33.2% and 27.2% respectively compared to that of control. Persulfate oxidation (PS) is widely employed as a promising alternative for waste activated sludge pretreatment due to the capability of generating free radicals. The product differences and microbiological mechanisms by which PS activation triggers WAS digestion through multiple modes need to be further investigated. This study comprehensively investigated the effects of persulfate oxidation activated through multiple modes, i.e., ferrous, zero-valent iron (ZVI), ultraviolet (UV) and heat, on the performance of sludge digestion. Results showed that PS_ZVI significantly accelerated the methane production rate to 12.02 mL/g VSS. By contrast, PS_Heat promoted the sludge acidification and gained the maximum short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) yield (277.11 ± 7.81 mg COD/g VSS), which was 3.41-fold compared to that in PS_ZVI. Moreover, ferrous and ZVI activated PS achieved the oriented conversion of acetate, the proportions of which took 73% and 78%, respectively. MiSeq sequencing results revealed that PS_Heat and PS_UV evidently enriched anaerobic fermentation bacteria (AFB) (i.e., Macellibacteroides and Clostridium XlVa). However, PS_Ferrous and PS_ZVI facilitated the enrichment of Woesearchaeota and methanogens. Furthermore, molecular ecological network and mantel test revealed the intrinsic interactions among the multiple functional microbes and environmental variables. The homo-acetogens and sulfate-reducing bacterial had potential cooperative and symbiotic relationships with AFB, while the nitrate-reducing bacteria displayed distinguishing ecological niches. Suitable activation modes for PS pretreatments resulted in an upregulation of genes expression responsible for digestion. Nitrate photolysis has become an efficient, low-cost and promising technology for emerging contaminants removal, while its performance and mechanism for waste activated sludge (WAS) treatment is still unknown. This study innovatively introduced nitrate photolysis for WAS disintegration, and investigated the effect of nitrate addition (150-375 mg N/L) for short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) production during anaerobic fermentation (AF). The results showed that nitrate photolysis significantly promoted the SCFAs production from WAS, and peaked at 280.7 mg/g VSS with 7-d fermentation with 150 mg N/L addition (150N-UV), which increased by 8.8-35.0 % and 10.7-23.3 % compared with other photolysis groups and sole nitrate groups. Effective release of the soluble organics was observed in the nitrate photolysis groups during AF, especially soluble proteins, reaching 1505.4 mg COD/L at 9 d in 150N-UV group, promoted by 7.0∼15.7 % than nitrate/nitrate photolysis groups. The model compounds simulation experiment further demonstrated the positive effect of nitrate photolysis on organics hydrolysis and SCFAs accumulation. The result of the radical capture and quenching verified the reactive oxygen species contributed more compared with reactive nitrogen species. Functional group analysis confirmed the effective bioconversion of the macromolecular organics during the fermentation. Moreover, the nitrate photolysis enhanced the enrichment of the functional consortia, including anaerobic fermentation bacteria (AFB), e.g., Fnoticella, Romboutsia, Gracilibacter and Sedimentibacter, and nitrate reducing bacteria (NRB), e.g., Acinerobacter and Ahniella. The production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) is constrained by substrate availability and the increased fractional pressure of H 2 emitted by acidogenic/fermentative bacteria during anaerobic fermentation of waste activated sludge (WAS). This study introduced a novel approach employing zero-valent iron (ZVI)-activated sulfite pretreatment combined with H 2 -consuming sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) mediation to improve SCFAs, especially acetate production from WAS fermentation. Experimental results showed that the combined ZVI-activated sulfite and incomplete-oxidative SRB (io-SRB) process achieved a peak SCFAs production of 868.11 mg COD/L, with acetate accounting for 80.55 %, which was 7.90- and 2.18-fold higher than that obtained from raw WAS fermentation, respectively. This could be firstly attributed to the SO 4 - and OH generated by ZVI-activated sulfite, which significantly promoted WAS decomposition, e.g., soluble proteins and carbohydrates increased 14.3- and 10.8-fold, respectively, over those in raw WAS. The biodegradation of dissolved organic matter was subsequently enhanced by the synergistic interaction and H 2 transfer between anaerobic fermentation bacteria (AFB) and io-SRB. The positive and negative correlations among AFB, nitrate-reducing bacteria (NRB) and the io-SRB consortia were revealed by molecular ecological network (MEN) and Mantel test. Moreover, the expression of functional genes was also improved, for instance, in relation to acetate formation, the relative abundances of phosphate acetyltransferase and acetate kinase was 0.002 % and 0.005 % higher than that in the control test, respectively. Biochar produced from bio-wastes has been widely used to promote the performance of anaerobic digestion. Waste activated sludge (WAS) is considered as a kind of popular precursor for biochar preparation, but the abundant resources in WAS were neglected previously. In this study, the roles of biochar prepared from raw, pretreated, and fermented sludge on anaerobic digestion were investigated. That is, parts of carbon sources and nutrients like polysaccharides, proteins, and phosphorus were firstly recovered after sludge pretreatment or fermentation, and then the sludge residuals were used as raw material to prepare biochar. The methane yield improved by 22.1% with adding the biochar (AK-BC) prepared by sludge residual obtained from alkaline pretreatment. Mechanism study suggested that the characteristics of AK-BC like specific surface area and defect levels were updated. Then, the conversion performance of intermediate metabolites and electro-activities of extracellular polymeric substances were up-regulated. As a result, the activity of electron transfer was increased with the presence of AK-BC, with increase ratio of 21.4%. In addition, the electroactive microorganisms like Anaerolineaceae and Methanosaeta were enriched with the presence of AK-BC, and the potential direct interspecies electron transfer was possibly established. Moreover, both aceticlastic and CO 2 -reducing methanogenesis pathways were improved by up-regulating related enzymes. Electro-fermentation (EF) has been extensively studied for recovering hydrogen and phosphorus from waste activated sludge (WAS), while was limited for the further application due to the low hydrogen yield and phosphorus recovery efficiency. This study proposed an efficient strategy for hydrogen and vivianite recovery from the simulated sludge fermentation liquid by sacrificial iron anode in EF. The optimum hydrogen productivity and the utilization efficiency of short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) reached 45.2 mmol/g COD and 77.6% at 5 d in pH 8. Phosphate removal efficiency achieved at 90.8% at 2 d and the high crystallinity and weight percentage of vivianite (84.8%) was obtained. The functional microbes, i.e., anaerobic fermentative bacteria, electrochemical active bacteria, homo-acetogens and iron-reducing bacteria were highly enriched and the inherent interaction between the microbial consortia and environmental variables was thoroughly explored. A huge production of waste activated sludge (WAS) has been a burden for wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) with high disposal cost and little benefit back to wastewater purification. The short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) produced by a short-term acidogenic fermentation of WAS before methane production have been proven to be a high-quality carbon source available for microbial denitrification process. The dual purpose of full recovery of fermentation liquid products and facilitating disposal of residual solid waste necessitate an efficient solid-liquid separation process of short-term fermentation liquid. The transformation and loss of various soluble carbon sources between solid and liquid are very important issues for carbon recovery efficiency when combining short-term fermentation and sludge dewatering in WWTPs. Here we testified the three conventional preconditioning coagulants, Polyferric Sulfate (PFS), Poly Aluminum Chloride (PAC) and Polyacrylamide (PAM), to improve the efficiency of subsequent solid-liquid separation. The results show that conversion yield of SCFAs in the liquid phase of sludge after short-term fermentation was 195 mg COD/g VSS, when using the coagulants PFS, PAC, and PAM for recovery, the recovery ratio was 79.5%, 82.0%, and 85.9%, respectively, while the dewaterability could be improved after preconditioning short-term fermentation sludge. The complexation of Al 3+ /Fe 3+ in metal coagulants with carboxyl groups of SCFA demonstrated by Density Functional Theory calculation led to small part of soluble carbons co-migration to the solid phase, mainly a loss of high molecular weight organic compounds (carbohydrate, proteins, humic acids), while the application of PAM had little impact on carbon recovery. With advancements in research and the necessity of improving the performance of bioelectrochemical system (BES), coupling anaerobic digestion (AD) with BES is crucial for energy gain from wastewater and bioremediation. Hybridization of BES-AD concept opens new avenues for pollutant degradation, carbon capture and nutrient-resource recovery from wastewater. The strength of merging BES-AD lies in synergy, and this approach was employed to differentiate fads from strategies with the potential for full-scale implementation and making it an energy-positive system. The integration of BES and AD system increases the overall performance and complexity of combined system and the cost of operation. From a technical standpoint, the primary determinants of BES-AD feasibility for field applications are the scalability and economic viability. High potential market for such integrated system attract industrial partners for more industrial trials and investment before commercialization. Polyethylene terephthalate (PET), one of the most ubiquitous engineering plastics, presents both environmental challenges and opportunities for carbon neutrality and a circular economy. This review comprehensively addressed the latest developments in biotic and abiotic approaches for PET recycling/upcycling. Biotically, microbial depolymerization of PET, along with the biosynthesis of reclaimed monomers [terephthalic acid (TPA), ethylene glycol (EG)] to value-added products, presents an alternative for managing PET waste and enables CO 2 reduction. Abiotically, thermal treatments (i.e., hydrolysis, glycolysis, methanolysis, etc.) and photo/electrocatalysis, enabled by catalysis advances, can depolymerize or convert PET/PET monomers in a more flexible, simple, fast, and controllable manner. Tandem abiotic/biotic catalysis offers great potential for PET upcycling to generate commodity chemicals and alternative materials, ideally at lower energy inputs, greenhouse gas emissions, and costs, compared to virgin polymer fabrication. Remarkably, over 25 types of upgraded PET products (e.g., adipic acid, muconic acid, catechol, vanillin, and glycolic acid, etc.) have been identified, underscoring the potential of PET upcycling in diverse applications. Efforts can be made to develop chemo-catalytic depolymerization of PET, improve microbial depolymerization of PET (e.g., hydrolysis efficiency, enzymatic activity, thermal and pH level stability, etc.), as well as identify new microorganisms or hydrolases capable of degrading PET through computational and machine learning algorithms. Boosting acetate production from waste activated sludge (WAS) fermentation is often hindered by the inefficient solubilization in the hydrolysis step and the high hydrogen pressure ( [Formula: see text] ) during the acidogenesis of C3-C5 short-chain fatty acid (SCFAs), i.e., propionate (HPr), butyrate (HBu) and valerate (HVa). Therefore, this study employed persulfate (PS) oxidation and C3-C5 incomplete-oxidative sulfate reducing bacteria (io-SRB) metabolizers to tailor SCFAs conversion from WAS fermentation. The decomposition efficiency, performance of SCFAs production was investigated. Results showed that the PS significantly promoted WAS decomposition, with a dissolution rate of 39.4%, which is 26.0% higher than the un-treated test. Furthermore, SCFAs yields were increased to 462.7 ± 42 mg COD/g VSS in PS-HBu-SRB, which was 7.4 and 2.2 times higher than that of un-treated and sole PS tests, respectively. In particular, the sum of acetate and HPr reached the peak value of 85%, indicating that HBu-SRB mediation promoted the biotransformation of HBu and macromolecular organics by reducing the [Formula: see text] restriction. Meanwhile, sulfate radical (SO 4 ∙ - )-based oxidation (SR-AOPs) was effective in the decomposition of WAS, the oxidative product, i.e., sulfate served the necessary electron acceptor for the metabolism of io-SRB. Further analysis of Mantel test revealed the cluster of the functional genus and their interaction with environmental variables. Potassium ferrate (K 2 FeO 4 ) has been extensively employed to promote short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) production from anaerobic fermentation of waste activated sludge (WAS) because of its potent oxidizing property and formation of alkaline hydrolyzed products (potassium hydroxide, KOH and ferric hydroxide, Fe(OH) 3 ). However, whether K 2 FeO 4 actually works as dual functions of both an oxidizing agent and an alkalinity enhancer during the anaerobic fermentation process remains uncertain. This study aims to identify the contributions of hydrolyzed products of K 2 FeO 4 on SCFAs production. The results showed that K 2 FeO 4 did not execute dual functions of oxidization and alkalinity in promoting SCFAs production. The accumulation of SCFAs using K 2 FeO 4 treatment (183 mg COD/g volatile suspended solids, VSS) was less than that using either KOH (192 mg COD/g VSS) or KOH & Fe(OH) 3 (210 mg COD/g VSS). The mechanism analysis indicated that the synergistic effects caused by oxidization and alkalinity properties of K 2 FeO 4 did not happen on solubilization, hydrolysis, and acidogenesis stages, and the inhibition effect caused by K 2 FeO 4 on methanogenesis stage at the initial phase was more severe than that of its hydrolyzed products. It was also noted that the inhibition effects of K 2 FeO 4 and its hydrolyzed products on the methanogenesis stage could be relieved during a longer sludge retention time, and the final methane yields using KOH or KOH & Fe(OH) 3 treatment were higher than that using K 2 FeO 4 , further confirming that dual functions of K 2 FeO 4 were not obtained. Therefore, K 2 FeO 4 may not be an alternative strategy for enhancing the production of SCFAs from WAS compared to its alkaline hydrolyzed products. Anaerobic digestion is widely employed for the treatment of waste activated sludge (WAS) due to its advantages like simultaneous energy recovery and sludge stabilization, promoting carbon-neutral operation of wastewater treatment plants. Natural zeolite, a low-cost and eco-friendly additive, has the potential to improve methane production from anaerobic digestion. This study investigated the effects of natural zeolite on anaerobic digestion when the substrate was WAS. It was found that methane production potential in response to natural zeolite was dosage-dependent. The optimal dosage was 0.1 g zeolite/g volatile suspended solids (VSS), with a methane yield of 181.89 ± 6.75 mL/g VSS, which increased by 20.1% compared to that of the control. Although the methane yields with other dosages of natural zeolite were higher than that of control, they were lesser than that with 0.1 g zeolite/g VSS. Natural zeolite affected transfer and conversion of proteins much more than polysaccharides in liquid phase and extracellular polymeric substances. In anaerobic digestion, natural zeolite had with little effects on WAS solubilization, while it improved hydrolysis, acidification, and methanogenesis. The dosages of natural zeolite did have significant effects on bacterial communities in biofilm rather than suspension, while the archaeal communities in biofilm and suspension were all greatly related to natural zeolite dosages. The developed biofilms promoted richness and functionality of microbial communities. The syntrophic metabolism relationships between methanogens and bacteria were improved, which was proved by selective enrichment of Methanosarcina, Syntrophomonas, and Petrimonas. Methane is one of the most promising renewable energies to alleviate energy crisis or replace fossil fuels, which can be recovered from anaerobic digestion of bio-wastes. However, the engineering application of anaerobic digestion is always hindered by low methane yield and production rate. This study revealed the roles and mechanisms of a green-prepared magnetic biochar (MBC) in promoting methane production performance from waste activated sludge. Results showed that the methane yield reached 208.7 mL/g volatile suspended solids with MBC additive dosage of 1 g/L, increasing by 22.1 % compared to that in control. Mechanism analysis demonstrated that MBC could promote hydrolysis, acidification, and methanogenesis stages. This was because the properties of biochar were upgraded by loading nano-magnetite, such as specific surface area, surface active sites, and surface functional groups, which made MBC have greater potential to mediate electron transfer. Correspondingly, the activity of α-glucosidase and protease respectively increased by 41.7 % and 50.0 %, and then the hydrolysis performances of polysaccharides and proteins were improved. Also, MBC improved the secretion of electroactive substances like humic substances and cytochrome C, which could promote extracellular electron transfer. Furthermore, Clostridium and Methanosarcina, as well-known electroactive microbes, were selectively enriched. The direct interspecies electron transfer between them was established via MBC. Gaining insight into the occurrence states of residual antibiotics is crucial to demystify their environmental behavior. However, the complexation of heteroatoms functioned on antibiotic molecules to metal ions in the water environment is not fully understood. This study reports that a fluorescence response was unexpectedly triggered by tetracycline (TC) and Al 3+ , serving as solid evidence to visualize the Al 3+ -TC coordination reaction. Differential electron absorption spectroscopy shows a quantifiable signal of the redshifted n-π* transition with a coordination reaction, which is also proportional to the fluorescence. The occurrence of Al 3+ -complexed TC also caused a split in retention time in liquid chromatogram. The TC ligands were re-released in the presence of stronger ligands competing for central Al 3+ . The complex ratio of Al 3+ -TC is confirmed to be 1:1 using Job's plot with a stability constant of 1.01 × 10 6 . Quantum chemical computations coupled with Gibbs free energy analysis simulated the formation of octahedral Al 3+ -TC configuration through a spontaneous bidentate chelation. Excessive waste-activated sludge (WAS) and insufficient carbon source (CS) for biological nitrogen removal (BNR) often coexist in municipal sewage treatment. Although the production of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) from WAS has been recognized as a promising solution, the development is limited by low VFAs production efficiency and dewatering deterioration of sludge. This study extracted the extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) from sludge by low-temperature thermal-hydrolysis (LTH) and high-speed hydro-cyclone (HSHC) pretreatment and recovered it for high-quality VFAs bio-production in thermophilic fermentation. Microbial mechanism analysis disclosed that interspecific interaction networks composed of functional flora, which accumulate VFAs by bio-converting EPS primarily and supplemented by EPS synthesis, guaranteed the efficient bio-production of VFAs. Anaerobic digestion has been proved as one promising strategy to simultaneously achieve resource recovery and environmental pollution control for biosolid treatment, and adding exogenous materials is a potential alternative to promote the above process. This study investigated response mechanisms of anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge (WAS) to particle sizes of zeolite. Results showed that the methane production reached 186.75 ± 7.62 mL/g volatile suspended solids (VSS) with zeolite of the particle size of 0.2-0.5 mm and the additive dosage of 0.1 g/g VSS, which increased by 22.08% compared to that in control. Mechanism study revealed that zeolite could improve hydrolysis, acidification, and methanogenesis stages. Rapid consumption rates of soluble polysaccharides and proteins were observed, correspondingly, the accumulations of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) were enhanced, and the compositions of SCFAs were optimized. The loss and negative impacts of nitrogen from fertilized soils remain a global challenge in agricultural field. Ammonium nitrogen (NH 4 + -N) and nitrate nitrogen (NO 3 - -N) leaching, together with volatile ammonia loss are the main pathways of nitrogen loss. To improve nitrogen availability, alkaline biochar with improved adsorption capacities is a promising soil amendment. This study was objected to investigate the effects of alkaline biochar (ABC, pH 8.68) on nitrogen mitigation, the effects on nitrogen loss, and the interactions among the mixed soils (biochar, nitrogen fertilizer, and soil) under both pot and field experiments. From pot experiments, ABC addition resulted in the poor reservation of NH 4 + -N which converted to volatile NH 3 under higher alkaline environments, mainly occurring in the first 3 days. But after, NO 3 - -N could be largely retained in surface soil by ABC addition. The reservation of NO 3 - -N by ABC offsets the loss of volatile NH 3 , and ABC ultimately showed positive reservations of nitrogen with fertilization. In the field experiment, the addition of urea inhibitor (UI) addition could inhibit the volatile NH 3 loss caused by ABC mainly in the first week. The long-term operation demonstrated that ABC supported persistent effectiveness in reducing N loss, while UI treatment temporarily delayed the N loss through inhibition of fertilizer hydrolysis. Integrated microbial electrolysis with anaerobic digestion is proved to be an effective way to improve methanogenesis efficiency of waste activated sludge (WAS). WAS requires pretreatment for efficient improvement of acidification or methanogenesis efficiency, but excessive acidification may inhibit the methanogenesis. In order to balance these two stages, a method for efficient WAS hydrolysis and methanogenesis has been proposed in this study by high-alkaline pretreatment integrated with microbial electrolysis system. The effects of pretreatment methods and voltage on the normal temperature digestion of WAS have also been further investigated with emphasis on the effects of voltage and substrate metabolism. The results show that compared to low-alkaline pretreatment (pH = 10), high-alkaline pretreatment (pH > 14) can double the SCOD release and promote the VFAs accumulation to 5657 ± 392 mg COD/L, but inhibit the methanogenesis process. Microbial electrolysis can alleviate this inhibition effectively through the rapid consumption of VFAs and speeding up of the methanogenesis process. The optimal methane yield of the integrated system is 120.4 ± 8.4 mL/g VSS at the voltage of 0.5 V. Enzyme activities, high-throughput and gene function prediction analysis reveal that the cathode and anode maintain the activity of methanogens under high substrate concentrations. Voltage positively responded to improved methane yield from 0.3 to 0.8 V, but higher than 1.1 V is found to be unfavorable for cathodic methanogenesis and results in additional power loss. Landfill leachate concentrate (LLC) is a concentrated waste stream from landfill leachate treatment systems and has been recognized as a key challenge due to its high concentration of salts, heavy metals, organic matters, etc. Improper management of LLC (e.g. reinjection) would exacerbate the performance of upstream treatment processes and pose risks to the surrounding environments near landfill sites. Addressing the challenge and recovering resources from LLC have thus been attracting considerable attention. Although many LLC treatment technologies have been developed, a comprehensive discussion about the challenges still lacks. This review critically evaluates mainstream LLC treatment technologies, namely incineration, coagulation, advanced oxidation, evaporation and solidification/stabilization. We then introduce a geopolymer-based solidification (GS) process as a promising technology owning to its simple casting process and reusable final product and summarize engineering applications in China. Finally, we suggest investigating hybrid systems to minimize LLC production and achieve the on-site reuse of LLC. Persulfate has been applied extensively for waste activated sludge (WAS) decomposition due to the strong oxidizing sulfate radical generated as a product. However, the efficiency is not improved without activation to produce free radicals. In this study, a novel coupling strategy of heat-activated persulfate (Heat_PS) pretreatment and sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) triggering was explored to enhance short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) produced by WAS fermentation. The remaining sulfate acts as an essential acceptor of electrons for the metabolism of synergistic SRB, thereby boosting WAS acidification by energetic cooperation with anaerobic fermenters. The results showed that SCFAs yield in the Heat_PS + SRB group peaked at 431.89 mg COD/gVSS, with the proportion of acetate reaching 57.8 %. This was 6.33 and 1.75 times higher than that in raw and single Heat_PS treated WAS, respectively. Carbon balance revealed a conversion rate of 26.1 % of carbon content in WAS to SCFAs, with 4.5 % lower CO 2 equivalents emitted than that in raw WAS fermentation by the assessments of environmental impacts. This was partially attributed to the strong decomposition of WAS by SO 4 •- and • OH oxidation from heat-activated PS and the SRB trigger. In addition, the synergistic relationship among acidogenic/fermentative bacteria and SRB consortia was further verified by the positive correlation among Desulfovibrio, the hydrolytic Escherichia-Shigella, Morganella and the fermetative Macellibacteroides and Bacteroides, as revealed by molecular ecological networks (MENs) analysis. As the gathering place of urban wastewater, wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are indispensable for removing microplastics (MPs), one of the emerging contaminants of great concern, from cities into the natural environment. A reliable and efficient extraction method for MPs, especially in organic-rich matrices, such as sludge samples, is the basis for studying MPs contamination, while it is still lacking. The digestion process, which requires further optimisation, is the most important step during extraction. In this study, we developed and optimised a two-step digestion process to extract MPs and proposed a recommended dosage of digestion reagents based on the mixed liquid volatile suspended solids (MLVSS) level of the sample. Successive addition of 30% H 2 O 2  + 1 M HNO 3 (v:v = 1:1, T = 60 °C, t = 5 h + 5 h) could efficiently extract MPs from sludge samples (over 90%), and the recommended dosage of digestion reagent was 100 ml 30% H 2 O 2 +100 ml 1 M HNO 3 with the sample MLVSS lower than approximately 0.43 g. This new method was also applied to examine the characteristics of MPs in two typical WWTPs (anaerobic-anoxic-oxic and biofilter processes) in Shenzhen. The concentrations of MPs in the influent, effluent and dewatered sludge were approximately 114.00 n/L, 6.00 n/L, and 126.00 n/g (dry weight) in WWTP A, whereas 404.00 n/L, 22.00 n/L, and 204.00 n/g (dry weight) in WWTP B, respectively. Rayon and polyester were the dominant polymers in both the WWTPs. Fibers accounted for the largest proportion of the influent and effluent. Sizes between 0.20-0.50 mm were most detected. Mechanism of microbiome assembly and function driven by cathode potential in electro-stimulated microbial reductive dechlorination system remain poorly understood. Here, core microbiome structure, interaction, function and assembly regulating by cathode potential were investigated in a 2,4,6-trichlorophenol bio-dechlorination system. The highest dechlorination rate (24.30 μM/d) was observed under - 0.36 V with phenol as a major end metabolite, while, lower (-0.56 V) or higher (0.04 V or -0.16 V) potentials resulted in 1.3-3.8 times decreased of dechlorination kinetic constant. The lower the cathode potential, the higher the generated CH 4 , revealing cathode participated in hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis. Taxonomic and functional structure of core microbiome significantly shifted within groups of - 0.36 V and - 0.56 V, with dechlorinators (Desulfitobacterium, Dehalobacter), fermenters (norank_f_Propionibacteriaceae, Dysgonomonas) and methanogen (Methanosarcina) highly enriched, and the more positive interactions between functional genera were found. The lowest number of nodes and links and the highest positive correlations were observed among constructed sub-networks classified by function, revealing simplified and strengthened cooperation of functional genera driven by group of - 0.36 V. Carbon cycle regulation and greenhouse gas (GHG) emission abatement within wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) can theoretically improve sustainability. Currently, however, large amounts of external carbon sources used for deep nitrogen removal and waste sludge disposal aggravate the carbon footprint of most WWTPs. In this pilot-scale study, considerable carbon was preliminarily recovered from primary sludge (PS) through short-term (five days) acidogenic fermentation and subsequently utilized on-site for denitrification in a wool processing industrial WWTP. The recovered sludge-derived carbon sources were excellent electron donors that could be used as additional carbon supplements for commercial glucose to enhance denitrification. Additionally, improvements in carbon and nitrogen flow further contributed to GHG emission abatement. Overall, a 9.1% reduction in sludge volatile solids was achieved from carbon recovery, which offset 57.4% of external carbon sources, and the indirect GHG emissions of the target industrial WWTP were reduced by 8.05%. Conductive materials have been widely used to establish direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) for enhancing methane production potential from anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge (WAS). However, the roles of extracellular polymeric substances (EPSs) affected by conductive materials on anaerobic digestion have been rarely reported. This study selected four widely used conductive materials, i.e., granular active carbon (GAC), biochar (BC), zero-valent iron (ZVI), and magnetite (Mag), to reveal the roles of EPSs. Results showed that methane production potentials were increased by BC, ZVI and Mag compared to that of control, with increase ratios of 13.4 %, 22.2 %, and 12.2 %, while a decrease was observed by GAC. The contents, components and characteristics of EPSs were all affected by conductive materials. The contents of EPSs were increased by ZVI and Mag, while they were decreased by BC and GAC. The ratios between proteins and polysaccharides (PN/PS) in loosely bound EPSs (LB-EPSs) were reduced in all groups, while they were similar in tightly bound EPSs (TB-EPSs) of ZVI and Mag groups. In addition, the cytochrome C and redox properties were remarkably promoted in suspension rather than in LB- and TB-EPSs. It was found that the correlation relationships between the maximal methane production potential (Pmax) and PN/PS in EPSs were positive, as well as fluorescent substances, especially tyrosine-like and tryptophan-like substances, with R 2 of 0.96 and 0.98. Furthermore, the correlation relationships also existed between EPSs and microbial communities. Clostridium and Methanobacterium, potential DIET partners, presented significant positive correlation relationships (P < 0.05) with Pmax, PN/PS and fluorescent substances in EPSs. With the rapid growth of population and urbanization, more and more bio-wastes have been produced. Considering organics contained in bio-wastes, to recover resource from bio-wastes is of great significance, which can not only achieve the resource recycle, but also protect the environment. Anaerobic digestion (AD) has been proved as one of the most promising strategies to recover bio-energy from bio-wastes, as well as to realize the reduction of bio-wastes. However, the conventional interspecies electron transfer is sensitive to environmental shocks, such as high ammonia, organic pollutants, metal ions, etc., which lead to instability or failure of AD. The recent findings have proved that the introduction of zero-valent iron (ZVI) in AD system can significantly enhance methane production from bio-wastes. This review systematically highlighted the recent advances on the roles of ZVI in AD, including underlying mechanisms of ZVI on AD, performance enhancement of AD contributed by ZVI, and impact factors of AD regulated by ZVI. Furthermore, current limitations and outlooks have been analyzed and concluded. The roles of ZVI on underlying mechanisms in AD include regulating reaction conditions, electron transfer mode and function of microbial communities. The addition of ZVI in AD can not only enhance bio-energy recovery and toxic contaminants removal from bio-wastes, but also have the potential to buffer adverse effect caused by inhibitors. Moreover, the electron transfer modes induced by ZVI include both interspecies hydrogen transfer and direct interspecies electron transfer pathways. How to comprehensively evaluate the effects of ZVI on AD and further improve the roles of ZVI in AD is urgently needed for practical application of ZVI in AD. Bioelectrochemical systems were proposed as a promising approach for the efficient valorization of biomass into 6-8 carbon atom medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs), the precursors for high value-added chemicals or renewable energy, via acetyl-CoA-mediated chain elongation (CE). To achieve CE processes, exogenous electron donors (EDs), e.g., ethanol or lactic acid, were normally prerequisites. This research built a microbial electrolysis cell (MEC) for MCFAs biosynthesis from acetate without exogenous EDs addition. A wide range of applied voltages (0.6-1.2 V) was first employed to investigate the bioelectrocatalyzing response. The results show that caproate and butyrate were the main products formed from acetate under different applied voltages. Maximum caproate concentration (501 ± 12 mg COD/L) was reached at 0.8 V on day 3. Under this applied voltage, hydrogen partial pressure stabilized at about 0.1 bar, beneficial for MCFA production. Electron and carbon balances revealed that the electron-accepting capacity achieved 32% at 0.8 V, showing the highest interspecies electron transfer efficiency. Most of the carbon was recovered in the form of caproate (carbon loss was 9%). MiSeq sequencing revealed Rhodobacter and Clostridium&#95;sensu&#95;stricto playing the crucial role in the biosynthesis of caproate, while Acetobacterium, Acetoanaerobium, and Acetobacter represented the main ED contributors. Alkaline pretreatment is one promising strategy for promoting anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge (WAS). This study selected three types of alkalis with monovalent (NaOH and KOH), divalent (Ca(OH) 2 and Mg(OH) 2 ), and trivalent (Fe(OH) 3 and Al(OH) 3 ) cations to reveal the roles of metal ions on short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) production. The enhanced production potentials of SCFAs were reduced by order of alkalis with monovalent, divalent, and trivalent cations. Na + , K + , Ca 2+ , and Mg 2+ did no contributions on SCFAs production, while Fe 3+ and Al 3+ performed better than control, especially the latter. The mechanism analysis proved that Na + , K + , Ca 2+ , and Mg 2+ did no significant effects on solubilization, hydrolysis, acidification and methanogenesis stages, while the first three stages were improved by Fe 3+ and Al 3+ and the methanogenesis stage was inhibited. Biomethane as a sustainable, alternative, and carbon-neutral renewable energy source to fossil fuels is highly needed to alleviate the global energy crisis and climate change. The conventional anaerobic digestion (AD) process for biomethane production from waste(water) streams has been widely employed while struggling with a low production rate, low biogas qualities, and frequent instability. The electric-biologically hybrid microbial electrochemical anaerobic digestion system (MEC-AD) prospects more stable and robust biomethane generation, which facilitates complex organic substrates degradation and mediates functional microbial populations by giving a small input power (commonly voltages < 1.0 V), mainly enhancing the communication between electroactive microorganisms and (electro)methanogens. Despite numerous bioreactor tests and studies that have been conducted, based on the MEC-AD systems, the integrated microbial fingerprints, and cooperation, accelerating substrate degradation, and biomethane production, have not been fully summarized. Herein, we present a comprehensive review of this novel developing biotechnology, beginning with the principles of MEC-AD. First, we examine the fundamentals, configurations, classifications, and influential factors of the whole system's performances (reactor types, applied voltages, temperatures, conductive materials, etc.,). Second, extracellular electron transfer either between diverse microbes or between microbes and electrodes for enhanced biomethane production are analyzed. Third, we further conclude (electro)methanogenesis, and microbial interactions, and construct ecological networks of microbial consortia in MEC-AD. Currently, the depletion of natural resources and contamination of the surrounding environment demand a paradigm shift to resource recycling and reuse. In this regard, phosphorus (P) is a model nutrient that possesses the negative traits of depletion (will be exhausted in the next 100 years) and environmental degradation (causes eutrophication and climate change), and this has prompted the scientific community to search for options to solve P-related problems. To date, P recovery in the form of struvite from wastewater is one viable solution suggested by many scholars. Struvite can be recovered either in the form of NH 4 -struvite (MgNH 4 PO 4 •6H 2 O) or K-struvite (MgKPO 4 •6H 2 O). From struvite, K (MgKPO 4 •6H 2 O) and N (MgNH 4 PO 4 •6H 2 O) are important nutrients for plant growth, but N is more abundant in the environment than K (the soil's most limited nutrient), which requires a systematic approach during P recovery. Although K-struvite recovery is a promising approach, information related to its crystallization is deficient. Here, we present the general concept of P recovery as struvite and details about K-struvite, such as the source of nutrients, factors (pH, molar ratio, supersaturation, temperature, and seeding), advantages (environmental, economic, and social), disadvantages (heavy metals, pathogenic organisms, and antibiotic resistance genes), and challenges (scale-up and acceptance). Removal and recovery of uranium from uranium-mine wastewater is beneficial to environmental protection and resource preservation. Reduction of soluble hexavalent U (U(VI)) to insoluble tetravalent uranium (U(IV)) by microbes is a plausible approach for this purpose, but its practical implementation has long been restricted by its intrinsic drawbacks. The electro-stimulated microbial process offers promise in overcoming these drawbacks. However, its applicability in real wastewater has not been evaluated yet, and its U(VI) removal mechanisms remain poorly understood. Herein, we report that introducing a weak electro-stimulation considerably boosted microbial U(VI) removal activities in both synthetic and real wastewater. The U(VI) removal has proceeded via U(VI)-to-U(IV) reduction in the biocathode, and the electrochemical characterization demonstrates the crucial role of the electroactive biofilm. Microbial community analysis shows that the broad biodiversity of the cathode biofilm is capable of U(VI) reduction, and the molecular ecological network indicates that synthetic metabolisms among electroactive and metal-reducing bacteria play major roles in electro-microbial-mediated uranium removal. Metagenomic sequencing elucidates that the electro-stimulated U(VI) bioreduction may proceed via e-pili, extracellular electron shuttles, periplasmic and outer membrane cytochrome, and thioredoxin pathways. Waste activated sludge (WAS) is a potential resource to achieve carbon-neutral goal of wastewater treatment plant. However, the solubilization is always the rate-limiting step for resource recovery from anaerobic digestion of WAS. This study reported a novel strategy, i.e., potassium ferrate (PF) followed by alkali-stripping treatment, to achieve short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) and nitrogen recovery from WAS. Results showed that whether the stripping process was conducted under alkaline condition or not, the SCFAs production potential was increased rather than reduced. The promoted SCFAs production was due to the accelerated solubilization and hydrolysis stages but the inhibited methanogenesis stage. The SCFAs yield reached 258 mg chemical oxygen demand (COD)/g volatile suspended solids (VSS), and the carbon source, including SCFAs, soluble polysaccharides and proteins, reached 384 mg COD/g VSS. Electrodeionization (EDI) is used to recover ammonia from wastewater as a fuel, but how its performance for ammonia recovery is affected by the supporting electrolyte is not very clear. This study involved experimental tests and theoretical calculations on NH 3 recovery, NH 4 + permeation, and NH 4 + and Na + interacting with the functional groups in a cation exchange membrane (CEM) using Na 2 SO 4 as the supporting electrolyte. The results demonstrated that a low concentration (≤0.250 mol L -1 of Na 2 SO 4 ) was conducive to NH 4 + permeation, while the a concentration (0.750 mol L -1 of Na 2 SO 4 ) hindered NH 4 + permeation. A maximum recovery efficiency of ammonia of 80.00%, a current efficiency of 70.10%, and an energy balance ratio of 0.66 were obtained at 0.250 mol L -1 of Na 2 SO 4 . Numerical results indicated that an increase in Na 2 SO 4 concentration caused severe concentration polarization that resisted NH 4 + migration in the CEM. The DFT results demonstrated that competitive adsorption of Na + to the CEM hindered NH 4 + migration. The weaker interacting force between NH 4 + and the sulfonate functional group (-SOH 3 ) in comparison to that between Na + and -SOH 3 might be related to the geometric and orientation effects, which generated an additional energy barrier for NH 4 + transport. To date, the application of marine anammox bacteria (MAB) is still a challenge in saline wastewater treatment due to the low growth rate and high sensitivity. Herein, bioelectrochemical system with applied voltage was exerted for the first time to promote the activity of MAB for removing nitrogen from saline wastewater. At the optimal voltage of 1.5 V, the mean total nitrogen removal rate (TNRR) reached the maximum of 0.65 kg/m 3 •d, which was 27.45% higher than that without applied voltage. Besides, applied voltage reduced the microbial diversity of MAB-based consortia, but the relative abundance of Candidatus Scalindua increased by 4.63% at 1.5 V compared with that without applied voltage. Also, proper applied voltage promoted the secretion of EPS and heme c, which resulted in the enhancement of MAB activity. Based on the remodified Logistic model analysis, the lag time of the nitrogen removal process was shortened by 0.72 h at the voltage of 1.5 V. Furthermore, it was found that higher voltage (> 2.0 V) had a negative effect on the MAB activity for low TNRR of 0.33 kg/m 3 •d (2.5 V). However, TNRR increased back to 0.61 kg/m 3 •d after removing the high applied voltage, which implied that the bioactivity was recoverable after being inhibited. Methane recovered from anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge (WAS) can be used as the energy supplement of the wastewater treatment plant, benefiting to its carbon-neutral operation. In order to enhance methane production, biochar (BC) has been widely selected as conductive material to build direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) in anaerobic digestion of WAS. However, the role and significance of washing strategies, including water and acid washing, on BCs for regulating methane production have not been reported. This study selected the frequently used woody- (W) and straw (S)-BCs as mode. Compared to raw W-BC, water and acid washing W-BC increased the methane yields by 19.1% and 15.7%, respectively. Differently, the methane yields among raw, water and acid washing S-BCs were similar. Mechanism study showed that both the two washing strategies optimized the properties of raw W-BC for promoting methane production. Water and acid washing W-BCs increased the electron transfer functional groups, such as ketones and quinones, which were not observed in S-BCs. Moreover, the electron-active microorganisms were enriched with the presence of water and acid washing W-BCs, and the predominant pathway for methane production shifted from hydrogentrophic to acetotrophic and DIET methanogenesis, while the microbial communities, including bacteria and archaea, were similar with the presence of raw, water and acid washing S-BCs. This study proposed a novel and high-efficiency strategy, i.e., freezing followed by low-temperature thermal treatment, to significantly promote short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) production from waste activated sludge compared to traditional freezing/thawing treatment. The maximal production of SCFAs was 212 mg COD/g VSS with a shortened retention time of five days, and the potentially recovered carbon source, including SCFAs, soluble polysaccharides and proteins, reached 321 mg COD/g VSS, increased by 92.1 and 28.3% compared to sole freezing and thermal treatment. Both the solubilization and hydrolysis steps of WAS were accelerated, and the acid-producing microorganisms, such as Macellibacteroides, Romboutsia and Paraclostridium, were greatly enriched, with a total abundance of 13.9%, which was only 0.54% in control. Interestingly, the methane production was inhibited at a shortened retention time, resulting in SCFAs accumulation, whereas it was increased by 32.0% at a longer sludge retention time, providing a potential solution for energy recovery from WAS., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Ltd. Electro-fermentation (EF) is an attractive way to implement the chain elongation (CE) process, by controlling the fermentation environment and reducing the dosage of external electron donors (EDs). However, besides the coexistence performance of external EDs and electrode, applications of EF technology on the fermentation broth containing both EDs and electron acceptors during CE process, are all still limited. The current study investigated the contribution of EF to caproate production, under different acetate: ethanol ratios (R A/E ). The effect of multiple EDs, both from ethanol and the bio-cathode, on caproate production, was also assessed. A proof-of-concept, based on experimental data, was presented for the EF-mediated ethanol-driven CE process. Experimental results showed that ethanol, together with the additional electron donors from the bio-cathode, was beneficial for the stable caproate production. The caproate concentration increased with the decrease of R A/E , while the bio-cathode further contributed to 10.7%-26.1 % increase of caproate concentration. Meanwhile, the hydrogen partial pressure tended to 0.10 ± 0.01 bar in all controlled EF reactors, thus favoring caproate production. This was attributed to the increased availability EDs, i.e., hydrogen and ethanol, generated by the electrode and electrochemically active bacteria (EAB), which might create multiple additional pathways to achieve caproate production. Molecular ecological networks analysis of the key microbiomes further revealed underlying cooperative relationships, beneficial to the chain elongation process. A mature cathodic biofilm plays the key role in biocathode electron transfer. The physiological transitions of it were of great interests as the sessile and dispersed (planktonic) work in a balance while it is still lack of understanding. In this study, an improved sampling method was used for detecting sessile, detached, and dispersed microorganisms. The results indicated a certain number of methanogens (82.6%) and its associated phyla (60%-90%) are immobilized as sessile biofilm. The Tax4Fun predicted a lower abundance of mobility associated genes and a significant enrichment (t-test, P = 0.003) of c-di-GMP in sessile biofilm. Overall, the microbial interaction and motility were predicted as two factors to affect the physiological transitions of cathodic biofilm. Electrostimulated hydrolysis acidification (eHA) has been used as an efficient biological pre-treatment of refractory industrial wastewater. However, the effects of electrostimulation on the function and assembly of planktonic anaerobic sludge microbial communities are poorly understood. Using 16S rRNA gene and metagenomic sequencing, we investigated planktonic sludge microbial community structure, composition, function, assembly, and microbial interactions in response to electrostimulation. Compared with a conventional hydrolysis acidification (HA) reactor, the planktonic sludge microbial communities selected by electrostimulation promoted biotransformation of the azo dye Alizarin Yellow R. The taxonomic and functional structure and composition were significantly shifted upon electrostimulation with azo dyes degraders (e.g. Acinetobacter and Dechloromonas) and electroactive bacteria (e.g. Pseudomonas) being enriched. More microbial interactions between fermenters and decolorizing and electroactive bacteria, as well as fewer interactions between different fermenters evolved in the eHA microbial communities. Moreover, the decolorizing bacteria were linked to the higher abundance of genes encoding for azo- and nitro-reductases and redox mediator (e.g. ubiquinone) biosynthesis involved in the transformation of azo dye. Microbial community assembly was more driven by deterministic processes upon electrostimulation. Sludge lysate is an unavoidable and refractory liquid produced from the waste activated sludge hydrothermal pyrolysis, which contains plenty of hazardous refractory organic compounds and value-added organic resources. Here, the proof of concept for an integrated strategy that couples technically compatible pretreatment to microbial electrolysis assisted AD (ME-AD) system is investigated for sludge lysate treatment and resource recovery. The pretreatment process shows a positive effectiveness on the ME-AD by reducing the organic load and inhibitory matters, which promote the residual refractory organic compounds (Maillard reaction products and humic acid-like substances) and carbon sources further biodegradation and bio-transformation. Combining membrane separation with ME-AD increased not only both the yield and purity of methane to 268.76 mL CH 4 /g COD and 98%, respectively, but also the recovery of 70.0~82.4% crude proteins (9.1 ± 0.5 g/L) from sludge lysate. Alternatively, the alkaline precipitation combined with ME-AD enhanced the recovery efficiency of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). The visible decreasing in the unpleasant color of the effluents was observed, implying that the degradation of harmful refractory organic was almost eliminated in sludge lysate. Pyridine contamination poses a significant threat to human and environmental health. Due to the presence of nitrogen atom in the pyridine ring, the pi bond electrons are attracted toward it and make difficult for pyridine treatment with biological and chemical methods. In this study, coupling Fenton treatment with different biological process was designed to enhance pyridine biotransformation and further mineralization. After Fenton oxidation process optimized, pretreated pyridine was evaluated under three biological (anaerobic, aerobic and microaerobic) operating conditions. Under optimum Fenton oxidation, pyridine (30-75%) and TOC (5-25%) removal efficiencies were poor. Biological process alone also showed insignificant removal efficiency, particularly anaerobic (pyridine = 8.2%; TOC = 5.3%) culturing condition. However, combining Fenton pretreatment with biological process increased pyridine (93-99%) and TOC (87-93%) removals, suggesting that hydroxyl radical generated during Fenton oxidation enhanced pyridine hydroxylation and further mineralization in the biological (aerobic > microaerobic > anaerobic) process. Intermediates were analyzed with UPLC-MS and showed presence of maleic acid, pyruvic acid, glutaric dialdehyde, succinic semialdehyde and 4-formylamino-butyric acid. High-throughput sequencing analysis also indicated that Proteobacteria (35-43%) followed by Chloroflexi (10.6-24.3%) and Acidobacteria (8.0-29%) were the dominant phyla detected in the three biological treatment conditions. Co-existence of dominant genera under aerobic/microaerobic (Nitrospira > Dokdonella > Caldilinea) and anaerobic (Nitrospira > Caldilinea > Longilinea) systems most probably play significant role in biotransformation of pyridine and its intermediate products. Waste sludge lysate was produced by dehydration after pyrolysis of waste activated sludge. In addition to dominant components such as protein, polysaccharide, and volatile fatty acids (VFAs), it also contained melanoidins, which produced from Maillard reaction. The inclusion of melanoidins will lead to poor biological degradation in conventional anaerobic digestion (AD). While microbial electrolysis cell (MEC) was proved an enhanced degradation of complex organic matter for hydrogen production. The results showed that under high concentration conditions, conventional AD caused the accumulation of propionic acid and slowed down the use of acetic acid, but MEC overcame the defects and increased the chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency by 40.33%, and achieved average hydrogen production rate (0.15 ± 0.05 L L -1  day -1 ), which was 79 times that of AD system (0.0019 ± 0.0009 L L -1  day -1 ).
