Novel magnetic nanohybrids composed of nanomaghemite covered by organic molecules were successfully synthesized at room temperature with different functionalization agents (sodium polystyrene sulfonate, oxalic acid, and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide) in low and high concentrations. Structural, vibrational, morphological, electron energy-loss spectroscopy, magnetic, and Mössbauer characterizations unraveled the presence of mainly cubic inverse spinel maghemite (γ-Fe 2 O 3 ), whilst X-ray diffraction and 57 Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy showed that most samples contain a minor amount of goethite phase (α-FeOOH). Raman analysis at different laser power revealed a threshold value of 0.83 mW for all samples, for which the γ-Fe 2 O 3 to α-Fe 2 O 3 phase transition was observed. Imaging microscopy revealed controlled-size morphologies of nanoparticles, with sizes in the range from 8 to 12 nm. Organic functionalization of the magnetic nanoparticles was demonstrated by vibrational and thermogravimetric measurements. For some samples, Raman, magnetic, and Mössbauer measurements suggested an even more complex core-shell-like configuration, with a thin shell containing magnetite (Fe 3 O 4 ) covering the γ-Fe 2 O 3 surface, thus causing an increase in the saturation magnetization of approximately 11% against nanomaghemite. Field cooling hysteresis curves at 5 K did not evidence an exchange bias effect, confirming that the goethite phase is not directly interacting magnetically with the functionalized maghemite nanoparticles. These magnetic nanohybrids may be suitable for applications in effluent remediation and biomedicine.

Magnetic properties of ferromagnetic nanostructures were studied by atomistic simulations following Monte Carlo and Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert approaches. First, we investigated the influence of particle size and shape on the temperature dependence of magnetization for single cobalt and gadolinium nanoparticles and also in bi-magnetic Co@Gd core-shell nanoparticles with different sizes. The Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert approach was subsequently applied for inspecting the magnetic hysteresis behavior of 2 and 4 nm Co@Gd core-shell nanoparticles with negative, positive, and zero values of interfacial magnetic exchange. We were able to demonstrate the influence of finite-size effect on the dependence of the Curie temperature of Co and Gd nanoparticles. In the Co@Gd core-shell framework, it was possible to handle the critical temperature of the hybrid system by adjusting the Co core size. In addition, we found an improvement in the coercive field values for a negative interfacial exchange energy and for a different core size, suggesting an exchange spring behavior, while positive and zero values of interfacial exchange constant showed no strong influence on the hysteresis behavior.

Novel magnetic zeolite type 5A nanocomposites were synthesized by the co-precipitation method and applied to lead removal from aqueous ambient. Maghemite nanoparticles were mixed with zeolite and, by controlling its content, transmission electron microscopy results gave sizes of 5 to 15 nm and selected area electron diffraction patterns confirmed the presence of zeolite. The nanocomposites have high specific surface area with values up to 194 m 2 /g. Magnetization measurements proved superparamagnetic behavior with saturation values of ~35 emu/gFe. Kinetic adsorption experiments showed removal efficiencies of 99.9% and an enhanced equilibrium time of 5 min. The lead concentrations after adsorption experiments lay under the permissible levels of 10 μg L -1 , according to the World Health Organization. The maximum adsorption capacity, estimated by Sips model, was 265 mg L -1 at 300 K. The removal efficiency was significantly improved in the range of pH > 6, as well as in the presence of cation interferents such as Ca(II), Cu(II), and Cd(II). The adsorption mechanism was explained with cation exchange between Pb(II), the zeolite framework, and the protonated maghemite surface. Besides, our system revealed recyclability even after seven regeneration cycles. Thus, our synthesized materials have remarkable adsorption properties for lead water remediation processes.

Herein, by studying a stepwise phase transformation of 23 nm FeO-Fe 3 O 4 core-shell nanocubes into Fe 3 O 4 , we identify a composition at which the magnetic heating performance of the nanocubes is not affected by the medium viscosity and aggregation. Structural and magnetic characterizations reveal the transformation of the FeO-Fe 3 O 4 nanocubes from having stoichiometric phase compositions into Fe 2+ -deficient Fe 3 O 4 phases. The resultant nanocubes contain tiny compressed and randomly distributed FeO subdomains as well as structural defects. This phase transformation causes a 10-fold increase in the magnetic losses of the nanocubes, which remain exceptionally insensitive to the medium viscosity as well as aggregation unlike similarly sized single-phase magnetite nanocubes. We observe that the dominant relaxation mechanism switches from Néel in fresh core-shell nanocubes to Brownian in partially oxidized nanocubes and once again to Néel in completely treated nanocubes. The Fe 2+ deficiencies and structural defects appear to reduce the magnetic energy barrier and anisotropy field, thereby driving the overall relaxation into Néel process. The magnetic losses of these nanoparticles remain unchanged through a progressive internalization/association to ovarian cancer cells. Moreover, the particles induce a significant cell death after being exposed to hyperthermia treatment. Here, we present the largest heating performance that has been reported to date for 23 nm iron oxide nanoparticles under intracellular conditions. Our findings clearly demonstrate the positive impacts of the Fe 2+ deficiencies and structural defects in the Fe 3 O 4 structure on the heating performance into intracellular environment.

We report the colloidal synthesis of hybrid dumbbell-like nanocrystals (NCs) which feature a plasmonic metal domain (M) attached to a morphologically-tunable magnetic oxide domain (MOx). We highlight how the modulation of the amount of oleic acid (OlAc) in the synthesis mixture influences the final composition of the M domain, the morphology of the MOx domain and, consequently, the magnetic properties of the hetero-structures. In the presence of high amounts of OlAc, a crystalline, magnetite MOx is mainly formed, coupled with a partial dealloying between Au and Cu in the M domain. Decreasing the amount of OlAc preserved the AuCu alloy and resulted in the formation of core-shell structures in the MOx. Here, a disordered, poorly crystalline, glass-like maghemite shell was coupled with a highly disordered iron rich core. An investigation into the magnetic properties revealed that the disordered phase was likely responsible for the observed exchange bias, rather than the interfacial stress between the M and MOx., Competing Interests: There are no conflicts to declare., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry.)
