A key open question in the study of layered superconducting nickelate films is the role that hydrogen incorporation into the lattice plays in the appearance of the superconducting state. Due to the challenges of stabilizing highly crystalline square planar nickelate films, films are prepared by the deposition of a more stable parent compound which is then transformed into the target phase via a topotactic reaction with a strongly reducing agent such as CaH 2 . Recent studies, both experimental and theoretical, have introduced the possibility that the incorporation of hydrogen from the reducing agent into the nickelate lattice may be critical for the superconductivity. In this work, we use secondary ion mass spectrometry to examine superconducting La 1-x X x NiO 2 / SrTiO 3 (X = Ca and Sr) and Nd 6 Ni 5 O 12 / NdGaO 3 films, along with non-superconducting NdNiO 2 / SrTiO 3 and (Nd,Sr)NiO 2 / SrTiO 3 . We find no evidence for extensive hydrogen incorporation across a broad range of samples, including both superconducting and non-superconducting films. Theoretical calculations indicate that hydrogen incorporation is broadly energetically unfavorable in these systems, supporting our conclusion that extensive hydrogen incorporation is not generally required to achieve a superconducting state in layered square-planar nickelates., (© 2024. We study the coupled charge density wave (CDW) and insulator-to-metal transitions in the 2D quantum material 1T-TaS 2 . By applying in situ cryogenic 4D scanning transmission electron microscopy with in situ electrical resistance measurements, we directly visualize the CDW transition and establish that the transition is mediated by basal dislocations (stacking solitons). We find that dislocations can both nucleate and pin the transition and locally alter the transition temperature T c by nearly ~75 K. This finding was enabled by the application of unsupervised machine learning to cluster five-dimensional, terabyte scale datasets, which demonstrate a one-to-one correlation between resistance-a global property-and local CDW domain-dislocation dynamics, thereby linking the material microstructure to device properties. In this study, a conjugate radiation/conduction multimode heat transfer analysis of cryogenic focused ion beam (FIB) milling steps necessary for producing ex situ lift out specimens under cryogenic conditions (cryo-EXLO) is performed. Using finite volume for transient heat conduction and enclosure theory for radiation heat transfer, the analysis shows that as long as the specimen is attached or touching the FIB side wall trenches, the specimen will remain vitreous indefinitely, while actively cooled at liquid nitrogen (LN2) temperatures. To simulate the time needed to perform a transfer step to move the bulk sample containing the FIB-thinned specimen from the cryo-FIB to the cryo-EXLO cryostat, the LN2 temperature active cooling is turned off after steady-state conditions are reached and the specimen is monitored over time until the critical devitrification temperature is reached. Under these conditions, the sample will remain vitreous for >3 min, which is more than enough time needed to perform the cryo-transfer step from the FIB to the cryostat, which takes only ∼10 s. Charge density waves are emergent quantum states that spontaneously reduce crystal symmetry, drive metal-insulator transitions, and precede superconductivity. In low-dimensions, distinct quantum states arise, however, thermal fluctuations and external disorder destroy long-range order. Here we stabilize ordered two-dimensional (2D) charge density waves through endotaxial synthesis of confined monolayers of 1T-TaS 2 . Specifically, an ordered incommensurate charge density wave (oIC-CDW) is realized in 2D with dramatically enhanced amplitude and resistivity. By enhancing CDW order, the hexatic nature of charge density waves becomes observable. Upon heating via in-situ TEM, the CDW continuously melts in a reversible hexatic process wherein topological defects form in the charge density wave. From these results, new regimes of the CDW phase diagram for 1T-TaS 2 are derived and consistent with the predicted emergence of vestigial quantum order., (© 2024. The Author(s).)

Herein, we systematically examined how composition influenced the properties of vinyl addition polynorbornene anion exchange membranes (AEMs) prepared from 5 -n -hexyl-2-norbornene and 5-(4-bromobutyl)-2-norbornene. Copolymerization kinetics revealed that 5 -n -hexyl-2-norbornene is consumed faster than 5-(4-bromobutyl)-2-norbornene, leading to a portion of the chain being richer in bromoalkyl groups. The alkyl halide pendants can then be converted to either trimethylammonium or tetrakis(dialkylamino)phosphonium cations through straightforward substitution with trimethylamine or a tris(dialkylamino)phosphazene. A series of cationic ammonium polymers were synthesized first, where conductivity and water uptake increased as a function of increasing ionic content in the polymer. The optimized copolymer had a hydroxide conductivity of 95 ± 6 mS/cm at 80 °C. The living polymerization of the two monomers catalyzed by a cationic tert -butylphosphine palladium catalyst also enabled precise changes in the molecular weight while keeping the functional group concentration constant. Molecular weight did not have a significant impact on hydroxide conductivity over the range of ∼60-190 kg/mol ( M n ). The optimized tetraaminophosphonium AEM had the highest conductivity for any tetraaminophosphonium polymer to date (70 ± 3 mS/cm at 80 °C). Clear phase separation and larger domains were observed for the phosphonium-based AEM compared to the ammonium at an identical composition, which is attributed to the larger occupied volume of the phosphorus cation. Fuel cell studies with the two membranes resulted in peak power densities of 1.59 and 0.79 W/cm 2 for the ammonium and tetraaminophosphonium membrane electrode assemblies, respectively. The charge density wave material 1T-TaS 2 exhibits a pulse-induced insulator-to-metal transition, which shows promise for next-generation electronics such as memristive memory and neuromorphic hardware. However, the rational design of TaS 2 devices is hindered by a poor understanding of the switching mechanism, the pulse-induced phase, and the influence of material defects. Here, we operate a 2-terminal TaS 2 device within a scanning transmission electron microscope at cryogenic temperature, and directly visualize the changing charge density wave structure with nanoscale spatial resolution and down to 300 μs temporal resolution. We show that the pulse-induced transition is driven by Joule heating, and that the pulse-induced state corresponds to the nearly commensurate and incommensurate charge density wave phases, depending on the applied voltage amplitude. With our in operando cryogenic electron microscopy experiments, we directly correlate the charge density wave structure with the device resistance, and show that dislocations significantly impact device performance. A mixture of N , N , N '-trisubstituted thiourea and cyclic N , N , N ', N '-tetrasubstituted selenourea precursors were used to synthesize three monolayer thick CdS 1- x Se x nanoplatelets in a single synthetic step. The microstructure of the nanoplatelets could be tuned from homogeneous alloys, to graded alloys to core/crown heterostructures depending on the relative conversion reactivity of the sulfur and selenium precursors. UV-visible absorption and photoluminescence spectroscopy and scanning transmission electron microscopy electron energy loss spectroscopy (STEM-EELS) images demonstrate that the elemental distribution is governed by the relative precursor conversion kinetics. Slow conversion kinetics produced nanoplatelets with larger lateral dimensions, behavior that is characteristic of precursor conversion limited growth kinetics. Across a 10-fold range of reactivity, CdS nanoplatelets have 4× smaller lateral dimensions than CdSe nanoplatelets grown under identical conversion kinetics. The difference in size is consistent with a rate of CdSe growth that is 4× greater than the rate of CdS. The alkaline earth stannates are touted for their wide band gaps and the highest room-temperature electron mobilities among all of the perovskite oxides. CaSnO 3 has the highest measured band gap in this family and is thus a particularly promising ultrawide band gap semiconductor. However, discouraging results from previous theoretical studies and failed doping attempts had described this material as "undopable". Here we redeem CaSnO 3 using hybrid molecular beam epitaxy, which provides an adsorption-controlled growth for the phase-pure, epitaxial, and stoichiometric CaSnO 3 films. By introducing lanthanum (La) as an n-type dopant, we demonstrate the robust and predictable doping of CaSnO 3 with free electron concentrations, n 3D , from 3.3 × 10 19 cm -3 to 1.6 × 10 20 cm -3 . The films exhibit a maximum room-temperature mobility of 42 cm 2 V -1 s -1 at n 3D = 3.3 × 10 19 cm -3 . Despite having a comparable radius as the host ion, La expands the lattice parameter. Using density functional calculations, this effect is attributed to the energy gain by lowering the conduction band upon volume expansion. Finally, we exploit robust doping by fabricating CaSnO 3 -based field-effect transistors. The transistors show promise for CaSnO 3 's high-voltage capabilities by exhibiting low off-state leakage below 2 × 10 -5 mA/mm at a drain-source voltage of 100 V and on-off ratios exceeding 10 6 . This work serves as a starting point for future studies on the semiconducting properties of CaSnO 3 and many devices that could benefit from CaSnO 3 's exceptionally wide band gap.

The layer stacking order in 2D materials strongly affects functional properties and holds promise for next-generation electronic devices. In bulk, octahedral MoTe 2 possesses two stacking arrangements, the ferroelectric Weyl semimetal T d phase and the higher-order topological insulator 1T' phase. However, in thin flakes of MoTe 2 , it is unclear if the layer stacking follows the T d , 1T', or an alternative stacking sequence. Here, we use atomic-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy to directly visualize the MoTe 2 layer stacking. In thin flakes, we observe highly disordered stacking, with nanoscale 1T' and T d domains, as well as alternative stacking arrangements not found in the bulk. We attribute these findings to intrinsic confinement effects on the MoTe 2 stacking-dependent free energy. Our results are important for the understanding of exotic physics displayed in MoTe 2 flakes. Measurement of picometer-scale atomic displacements by aberration-corrected STEM has become invaluable in the study of crystalline materials, where it can elucidate ordering mechanisms and local heterogeneities. HAADF-STEM imaging, often used for such measurements due to its atomic number contrast, is generally considered insensitive to light atoms such as oxygen. Light atoms, however, still affect the propagation of the electron beam in the sample and, therefore, the collected signal. Here, we demonstrate experimentally and through simulations that cation sites in distorted perovskites can appear to be displaced by several picometers from their true positions in shared cation-anion columns. The effect can be decreased through careful choice of sample thickness and beam voltage or can be entirely avoided if the experiment allows reorientation of the crystal along a more favorable zone axis. Therefore, it is crucial to consider the possible effects of light atoms and crystal symmetry and orientation when measuring atomic positions.

New properties and exotic quantum phenomena can form due to periodic nanotextures, including Moire patterns, ferroic domains, and topologically protected magnetization and polarization textures. Despite the availability of powerful tools to characterize the atomic crystal structure, the visualization of nanoscale strain-modulated structural motifs remains challenging. Here, we develop nondestructive real-space imaging of periodic lattice distortions in thin epitaxial films and report an emergent periodic nanotexture in a Mott insulator. Specifically, we combine iterative phase retrieval with unsupervised machine learning to invert the diffuse scattering pattern from conventional X-ray reciprocal-space maps into real-space images of crystalline displacements. Our imaging in PbTiO 3 /SrTiO 3 superlattices exhibiting checkerboard strain modulation substantiates published phase-field model calculations. Furthermore, the imaging of biaxially strained Mott insulator Ca 2 RuO 4 reveals a strain-induced nanotexture comprised of nanometer-thin metallic-structure wires separated by nanometer-thin Mott-insulating-structure walls, as confirmed by cryogenic scanning transmission electron microscopy (cryo-STEM). The nanotexture in Ca 2 RuO 4 film is induced by the metal-to-insulator transition and has not been reported in bulk crystals. We expect the phasing of diffuse X-ray scattering from thin crystalline films in combination with cryo-STEM to open a powerful avenue for discovering, visualizing, and quantifying the periodic strain-modulated structures in quantum materials.

The occurrence of superconductivity in proximity to various strongly correlated phases of matter has drawn extensive focus on their normal state properties, to develop an understanding of the state from which superconductivity emerges 1-4 . The recent finding of superconductivity in layered nickelates raises similar interests 5-8 . However, transport measurements of doped infinite-layer nickelate thin films have been hampered by materials limitations of these metastable compounds: in particular, a high density of extended defects 9-11 . Here, by moving to a substrate (LaAlO 3 ) 0.3 (Sr 2 TaAlO 6 ) 0.7 that better stabilizes the growth and reduction conditions, we can synthesize the doping series of Nd 1-x Sr x NiO 2 essentially free from extended defects. In their absence, the normal state resistivity shows a low-temperature upturn in the underdoped regime, linear behaviour near optimal doping and quadratic temperature dependence for overdoping. This is phenomenologically similar to the copper oxides 2,12 despite key distinctions-namely, the absence of an insulating parent compound 5,6,9,10 , multiband electronic structure 13,14 and a Mott-Hubbard orbital alignment rather than the charge-transfer insulator of the copper oxides 15,16 . We further observe an enhancement of superconductivity, both in terms of transition temperature and range of doping. These results indicate a convergence in the electronic properties of both superconducting families as the scale of disorder in the nickelates is reduced., (© 2023. Cation exchange is becoming extensively used for nanocrystal (NC) doping in order to produce NCs with unique optical and electronic properties. However, despite its ever-increasing use, the relationships between the cation exchange process, its doped NC products, and the resulting NC photophysics are not well characterized. For example, similar doping procedures on NCs with the same chemical compositions have resulted in quite different photophysics. Through a detailed single molecule investigation of a postsynthesis Ag + doping of CdSe NCs, a number of species were identified within a single doped NC sample, suggesting the differences in the optical properties of the various synthesis methods are due to the varied contributions of each species. Electrostatic force microscopy (EFM), electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) mapping, and single molecule photoluminescence (PL) studies were used to identify four possible species resulting from the Ag + -CdSe cation exchange doping process. The heterogeneity of these samples shows the difficulty in controlling a postsynthesis cation exchange method to produce homogeneous samples needed for use in any potential application. Nickel-based superconductors provide a long-awaited experimental platform to explore possible cuprate-like superconductivity. Despite similar crystal structure and d electron filling, however, superconductivity in nickelates has thus far only been stabilized in thin-film geometry, raising questions about the polar interface between substrate and thin film. Here we conduct a detailed experimental and theoretical study of the prototypical interface between Nd 1-x Sr x NiO 2 and SrTiO 3 . Atomic-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy in the scanning transmission electron microscope reveals the formation of a single intermediate Nd(Ti,Ni)O 3 layer. Density functional theory calculations with a Hubbard U term show how the observed structure alleviates the polar discontinuity. We explore the effects of oxygen occupancy, hole doping and cation structure to disentangle the contributions of each for reducing interface charge density. Resolving the non-trivial interface structure will be instructive for future synthesis of nickelate films on other substrates and in vertical heterostructures., (© 2023. The layered square-planar nickelates, Nd n+1 Ni n O 2n+2 , are an appealing system to tune the electronic properties of square-planar nickelates via dimensionality; indeed, superconductivity was recently observed in Nd 6 Ni 5 O 12 thin films. Here, we investigate the role of epitaxial strain in the competing requirements for the synthesis of the n = 3 Ruddlesden-Popper compound, Nd 4 Ni 3 O 10 , and subsequent reduction to the square-planar phase, Nd 4 Ni 3 O 8 . We synthesize our highest quality Nd 4 Ni 3 O 10 films under compressive strain on LaAlO 3 (001), while Nd 4 Ni 3 O 10 on NdGaO 3 (110) exhibits tensile strain-induced rock salt faults but retains bulk-like transport properties. A high density of extended defects forms in Nd 4 Ni 3 O 10 on SrTiO 3 (001). Films reduced on LaAlO 3 become insulating and form compressive strain-induced c-axis canting defects, while Nd 4 Ni 3 O 8 films on NdGaO 3 are metallic. The Jahn-Teller effect, in which electronic configurations with energetically degenerate orbitals induce lattice distortions to lift this degeneracy, has a key role in many symmetry-lowering crystal deformations 1 . Lattices of Jahn-Teller ions can induce a cooperative distortion, as exemplified by LaMnO 3 (refs. 2,3 ). Although many examples occur in octahedrally 4 or tetrahedrally 5 coordinated transition metal oxides due to their high orbital degeneracy, this effect has yet to be manifested for square-planar anion coordination, as found in infinite-layer copper 6,7 , nickel 8,9 , iron 10,11 and manganese oxides 12 . Here we synthesize single-crystal CaCoO 2 thin films by topotactic reduction of the brownmillerite CaCoO 2.5 phase. We observe a markedly distorted infinite-layer structure, with ångström-scale displacements of the cations from their high-symmetry positions. This can be understood to originate from the Jahn-Teller degeneracy of the d xz and d yz orbitals in the d 7 electronic configuration along with substantial ligand-transition metal mixing. A complex pattern of distortions arises in a [Formula: see text] tetragonal supercell, reflecting the competition between an ordered Jahn-Teller effect on the CoO 2 sublattice and the geometric frustration of the associated displacements of the Ca sublattice, which are strongly coupled in the absence of apical oxygen. As a result of this competition, the CaCoO 2 structure forms an extended two-in-two-out type of Co distortion following 'ice rules' 13 ., (© 2023. The growing demands for high-energy density electrical energy storage devices stimulate the coupling of conversion-type cathodes and lithium (Li) metal anodes. While promising, the use of these "Li-free" cathodes brings new challenges to the Li anode interface, as Li needs to be dissolved first during cell operation. In this study, we have achieved a direct visualization and comprehensive analysis of the dynamic evolution of the Li interface. The critical metrics of the interfacial resistance, Li growth, and solid electrolyte interface (SEI) distribution during the initial dissolution/deposition processes were systematically investigated by employing multidimensional analysis methods. They include three-electrode impedance tests, in situ atomic force microscopy, scanning electrochemical microscopy, and cryogenic scanning transmission electron microscopy. The high-resolution imaging and real-time observations show that a loose, diffuse, and unevenly distributed SEI is formed during the initial dissolution process. This leads to the dramatically fast growth of Li during the subsequent deposition, deviating from Fick's law, which exacerbates the interfacial impedance. The compactness of the interfacial structure and enrichment of electrolyte species at the surface during the initial deposition play critical roles in the long-term stability of Li anodes, as revealed by operando confocal Raman spectroscopic mapping. Our observations relate to ion transfer, morphological and structural evolution, and Li (de)solvation at Li interfaces, revealing the underlying pathways influenced by the initial dissolution process, which promotes a reconsideration of anode investigations and effective protection strategies.

The Ruddlesden-Popper (A n +1 B n O 3 n +1 ) compounds are highly tunable materials whose functional properties can be dramatically impacted by their structural phase n . The negligible differences in formation energies for different n can produce local structural variations arising from small stoichiometric deviations. Here, we present a Python analysis platform to detect, measure, and quantify the presence of different n -phases based on atomic-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) images. We employ image phase analysis to identify horizontal Ruddlesden-Popper faults within the lattice images and quantify the local structure. Our semiautomated technique considers effects of finite projection thickness, limited fields of view, and lateral sampling rates. This method retains real-space distribution of layer variations allowing for spatial mapping of local n -phases to enable quantification of intergrowth occurrence and qualitative description of their distribution suitable for a wide range of layered materials.

Physical and chemical processes at solid-liquid interfaces play a crucial role in many natural and technological phenomena, including catalysis, solar energy and fuel generation, and electrochemical energy storage. Nanoscale characterization of such interfaces has recently been achieved using cryogenic electron microscopy, thereby providing a new path to advancing our fundamental understanding of interface processes. This contribution provides a practical guide to mapping the structure and chemistry of solid-liquid interfaces in materials and devices using an integrated cryogenic electron microscopy approach. In this approach, we pair cryogenic sample preparation which allows stabilization of solid-liquid interfaces with cryogenic focused ion beam (cryo-FIB) milling to create cross-sections through these complex buried structures. Cryogenic scanning electron microscopy (cryo-SEM) techniques performed in a dual-beam FIB/SEM enable direct imaging as well as chemical mapping at the nanoscale. We discuss practical challenges, strategies to overcome them, as well as protocols for obtaining optimal results. While we focus in our discussion on interfaces in energy storage devices, the methods outlined are broadly applicable to a range of fields where solid-liquid interface play a key role.

Spontaneous hierarchical self-organization of nanometre-scale subunits into higher-level complex structures is ubiquitous in nature. The creation of synthetic nanomaterials that mimic the self-organization of complex superstructures commonly seen in biomolecules has proved challenging due to the lack of biomolecule-like building blocks that feature versatile, programmable interactions to render structural complexity. In this study, highly aligned structures are obtained from an organic-inorganic mesophase composed of monodisperse Cd 37 S 18 magic-size cluster building blocks. Impressively, structural alignment spans over six orders of magnitude in length scale: nanoscale magic-size clusters arrange into a hexagonal geometry organized inside micrometre-sized filaments; self-assembly of these filaments leads to fibres that then organize into uniform arrays of centimetre-scale bands with well-defined surface periodicity. Enhanced patterning can be achieved by controlling processing conditions, resulting in bullseye and 'zigzag' stacking patterns with periodicity in two directions. Overall, we demonstrate that colloidal nanomaterials can exhibit a high level of self-organization behaviour at macroscopic-length scales., (© 2022. Hydrogen energy-based electrochemical energy conversion technologies offer the promise of enabling a transition of the global energy landscape from fossil fuels to renewable energy. Here, we present a comprehensive review of the fundamentals of electrocatalysis in alkaline media and applications in alkaline-based energy technologies, particularly alkaline fuel cells and water electrolyzers. Anion exchange (alkaline) membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs) enable the use of nonprecious electrocatalysts for the sluggish oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), relative to proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), which require Pt-based electrocatalysts. However, the hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) kinetics is significantly slower in alkaline media than in acidic media. Understanding these phenomena requires applying theoretical and experimental methods to unravel molecular-level thermodynamics and kinetics of hydrogen and oxygen electrocatalysis and, particularly, the proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) process that takes place in a proton-deficient alkaline media. Extensive electrochemical and spectroscopic studies, on single-crystal Pt and metal oxides, have contributed to the development of activity descriptors, as well as the identification of the nature of active sites, and the rate-determining steps of the HOR and ORR. Among these, the structure and reactivity of interfacial water serve as key potential and pH-dependent kinetic factors that are helping elucidate the origins of the HOR and ORR activity differences in acids and bases. Additionally, deliberately modulating and controlling catalyst-support interactions have provided valuable insights for enhancing catalyst accessibility and durability during operation. The design and synthesis of highly conductive and durable alkaline membranes/ionomers have enabled AEMFCs to reach initial performance metrics equal to or higher than those of PEMFCs. We emphasize the importance of using membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) to integrate the often separately pursued/optimized electrocatalyst/support and membranes/ionomer components. Operando/in situ methods, at multiscales, and ab initio simulations provide a mechanistic understanding of electron, ion, and mass transport at catalyst/ionomer/membrane interfaces and the necessary guidance to achieve fuel cell operation in air over thousands of hours. We hope that this Review will serve as a roadmap for advancing the scientific understanding of the fundamental factors governing electrochemical energy conversion in alkaline media with the ultimate goal of achieving ultralow Pt or precious-metal-free high-performance and durable alkaline fuel cells and related technologies.

As a real-space technique, atomic-resolution STEM imaging contains both amplitude and geometric phase information about structural order in materials, with the latter encoding important information about local variations and heterogeneities present in crystalline lattices. Such phase information can be extracted using geometric phase analysis (GPA), a method which has generally focused on spatially mapping elastic strain. Here we demonstrate an alternative phase demodulation technique and its application to reveal complex structural phenomena in correlated quantum materials. As with other methods of image phase analysis, the phase lock-in approach can be implemented to extract detailed information about structural order and disorder, including dislocations and compound defects in crystals. Extending the application of this phase analysis to Fourier components that encode periodic modulations of the crystalline lattice, such as superlattice or secondary frequency peaks, we extract the behavior of multiple distinct order parameters within the same image, yielding insights into not only the crystalline heterogeneity but also subtle emergent order parameters such as antipolar displacements. When applied to atomic-resolution images spanning large (~0.5 × 0.5 μm2) fields of view, this approach enables vivid visualizations of the spatial interplay between various structural orders in novel materials.

Interface quantum materials have yielded a plethora of previously unknown phenomena, including unconventional superconductivity, topological phases, and possible Majorana fermions. Typically, such states are detected at the interface between two insulating constituents by electrical transport, but whether either material is conducting, transport techniques become insensitive to interfacial properties. To overcome these limitations, we use angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and molecular beam epitaxy to reveal the electronic structure, charge transfer, doping profile, and carrier effective masses in a layer-by-layer fashion for the interface between the Dirac nodal-line semimetal SrIrO 3 and the correlated metallic Weyl ferromagnet SrRuO 3 . We find that electrons are transferred from the SrIrO 3 to SrRuO 3 , with an estimated screening length of λ = 3.2 ± 0.1 Å. In addition, we find that metallicity is preserved even down to a single SrIrO 3 layer, where the dimensionality-driven metal-insulator transition typically observed in SrIrO 3 is avoided because of strong hybridization of the Ir and Ru t 2 g states.

Antiferroelectric materials have seen a resurgence of interest because of proposed applications in a number of energy-efficient technologies. Unfortunately, relatively few families of antiferroelectric materials have been identified, precluding many proposed applications. Here, we propose a design strategy for the construction of antiferroelectric materials using interfacial electrostatic engineering. We begin with a ferroelectric material with one of the highest known bulk polarizations, BiFeO 3 . By confining thin layers of BiFeO 3 in a dielectric matrix, we show that a metastable antiferroelectric structure can be induced. Application of an electric field reversibly switches between this new phase and a ferroelectric state. The use of electrostatic confinement provides an untapped pathway for the design of engineered antiferroelectric materials with large and potentially coupled responses.

Since the discovery of high-temperature superconductivity in copper oxide materials 1 , there have been sustained efforts to both understand the origins of this phase and discover new cuprate-like superconducting materials 2 . One prime materials platform has been the rare-earth nickelates and, indeed, superconductivity was recently discovered in the doped compound Nd 0.8 Sr 0.2 NiO 2 (ref. 3 ). Undoped NdNiO 2 belongs to a series of layered square-planar nickelates with chemical formula Nd n+1 Ni n O 2n+2 and is known as the 'infinite-layer' (n = ∞) nickelate. Here we report the synthesis of the quintuple-layer (n = 5) member of this series, Nd 6 Ni 5 O 12 , in which optimal cuprate-like electron filling (d 8.8 ) is achieved without chemical doping. We observe a superconducting transition beginning at ~13 K. Electronic structure calculations, in tandem with magnetoresistive and spectroscopic measurements, suggest that Nd 6 Ni 5 O 12 interpolates between cuprate-like and infinite-layer nickelate-like behaviour. Compelling evidence suggests distinct correlated electron behavior may exist only in clean 2D materials such as 1T-TaS 2 . Unfortunately, experiment and theory suggest that extrinsic disorder in free standing 2D layers disrupts correlation-driven quantum behavior. Here we demonstrate a route to realizing fragile 2D quantum states through endotaxial polytype engineering of van der Waals materials. The true isolation of 2D charge density waves (CDWs) between metallic layers stabilizes commensurate long-range order and lifts the coupling between neighboring CDW layers to restore mirror symmetries via interlayer CDW twinning. The twinned-commensurate charge density wave (tC-CDW) reported herein has a single metal-insulator phase transition at ~350 K as measured structurally and electronically. Fast in-situ transmission electron microscopy and scanned nanobeam diffraction map the formation of tC-CDWs. The occurrence of unconventional superconductivity in cuprates has long motivated the search for manifestations in other layered transition metal oxides. Recently, superconductivity is found in infinite-layer nickelate (Nd,Sr)NiO 2 and (Pr,Sr)NiO 2 thin films, formed by topotactic reduction from the perovskite precursor phase. A topic of much current interest is whether rare-earth moments are essential for superconductivity in this system. In this study, it is found that with significant materials optimization, substantial portions of the La 1- x Sr x NiO 2 phase diagram can enter the regime of coherent low-temperature transport (x = 0.14 - 0.20), with subsequent superconducting transitions and a maximum onset of ≈9 K at x = 0.20. Additionally, the unexpected indication of a superconducting ground state in undoped LaNiO 2 is observed, which likely reflects the self-doped nature of the electronic structure. Combining the results of (La/Pr/Nd) 1- x Sr x NiO 2 reveals a generalized superconducting dome, characterized by systematic shifts in the unit cell volume and in the relative electron-hole populations across the lanthanides., (© 2021 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)

Efforts to improve energy storage depend greatly on the development of efficient electrode materials. Recently, strain has been employed as an alternate approach to improve ion mobility. While lattice strain has been well-researched in catalytic applications, its effects on electrochemical energy storage are largely limited to computational studies due to complexities associated with strain control in nanomaterials as well as loss of strain due to the phase change of the active material during charging-discharging. In this work, we overcome these challenges and investigate the effects of strain on supercapacitor performance in Li-ion-based energy devices. We synthesize epitaxial Fe 3 O 4 @MnFe 2 O 4 (core@shell) nanoparticles with varying shell thickness to control the lattice strain. A narrow voltage window for electrochemical testing is used to limit the storage mechanism to lithiation-delithiation, preventing a phase change and maintaining structural strain. Cyclic voltammetry reveals a pseudocapacitive behavior and similar levels of surface charge storage in both strained- and unstrained-MnFe 2 O 4 samples; however, diffusive charge storage in the strained sample is twice as high as the unstrained sample. The strained-MnFe 2 O 4 electrode exceeds the performance of the unstrained-MnFe 2 O 4 electrode in energy density by ∼33%, power density by ∼28%, and specific capacitance by ∼48%. Density functional theory shows lower formation energies for Li-intercalation and lower activation barrier for Li-diffusion in strained-MnFe 2 O 4 , corresponding to a threefold increase in the diffusion coefficient. The enhanced Li-ion diffusion rate in the strained-electrodes is further confirmed using the galvanostatic intermittent titration technique. This work provides a starting point to using strain engineering as a novel approach for designing high performance energy storage devices.

ConspectusThe rich physics permeating the phase diagrams of quantum materials have commanded the attention of the solid-state chemistry, materials science, and condensed-matter physics communities, sparking immense research into quantum phase transitions including superconducting, ferroic, and charge-order transitions. Many of these transitions occur at low temperatures and involve electronic, magnetic, or lattice order, which emerges on the atomic to mesoscopic scales. The complex interplay of these states and the heterogeneity that arises due to competition and intertwining of phases, however, is not fully understood and requires probes that capture ordering over multiple length scales down to the local atomic symmetries. Advances in scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) have enabled atomic-resolution imaging as well as mapping of functional picometer-scale atomic displacements inside materials. In this Account, we discuss our group's work to expand the reach of atomic-resolution STEM to cryogenic temperatures (cryo-STEM) to study quantum materials with focus on charge-ordered systems.Charge-ordered phases, in which electrons as well as the atomic lattice form periodic patterns that lift the translational symmetries of the crystal, are not only intertwined with superconductivity but also underlie other exotic electronic phenomena such as colossal magnetoresistance and metal-insulator transitions. The periodic lattice distortions (PLDs) modulate the positions of the crystal's nuclei, which can be readily probed by electron microscopy. In a set of examples, we demonstrate cryo-STEM as a powerful technique for probing local order, nanometer-scale heterogeneities, and topological defects in charge-ordered manganites and in transition metal dichalcogenide charge density wave (CDW) systems.With the nearly commensurate-to-commensurate CDW transition upon cooling in 1T-TaS 2 , we show that nanoscale lattice textures in CDW phases can be revealed through direct imaging. These early atomic-resolution results, however, also highlighted the need for improvements in cryo-STEM imaging, which led to a push to advance data collection and analysis for direct spatial mapping and quantification of PLDs. By introducing an image registration algorithm developed specifically to accommodate fast, low signal-to-noise image acquisitions of crystalline lattices, we address previous limitations due to sample drift in cryo-STEM experiments. This has enabled subangstrom cryo-STEM imaging with sufficient signal-to-noise to reveal the low temperature structure of 1T'-TaTe 2 . Furthermore, it allows mapping and quantification of PLD atomic displacements in the charge-ordered manganites Bi 0.35 Sr 0.18 Ca 0.47 MnO 3 and Nd 0.5 Sr 0.5 MnO 3 with picometer precision at ∼95 K to resolve not only distinct ordered phases (i.e., site- and bond-centered charge order) but also their nanoscale coexistence within the same sample.Atomic-resolution cryo-STEM opens new opportunities for understanding the microscopic underpinnings of quantum phases. In this Account, we focus on spatial mapping of lattice degrees of freedom in phases that are present at temperatures down to liquid nitrogen. Further advances in instrumentation are needed to expand the temperature range and to also enable atomic-resolution measurements that rely on weaker signals such as electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) for probing of electronic structure or 4D-STEM approaches to map electric and magnetic fields.

The self-organization of strongly interacting electrons into superlattice structures underlies the properties of many quantum materials. How these electrons arrange within the superlattice dictates what symmetries are broken and what ground states are stabilized. Here we show that cryogenic scanning transmission electron microscopy (cryo-STEM) enables direct mapping of local symmetries and order at the intra-unit-cell level in the model charge-ordered system Nd 1/2 Sr 1/2 MnO 3 . In addition to imaging the prototypical site-centered charge order, we discover the nanoscale coexistence of an exotic intermediate state which mixes site and bond order and breaks inversion symmetry. We further show that nonlinear coupling of distinct lattice modes controls the selection between competing ground states. The results demonstrate the importance of lattice coupling for understanding and manipulating the character of electronic self-organization and that cryo-STEM can reveal local order in strongly correlated systems at the atomic scale.

Epitaxially connected quantum dot solids have emerged as an interesting class of quantum confined materials with the potential for highly tunable electronic structures. Realization of the predicted emergent electronic properties has remained elusive due in part to defective interdot epitaxial connections. Thermal annealing has shown potential to eliminate such defects, but a direct understanding of this mechanism hinges on determining the nature of defects in the connections and how they respond to heating. Here, we use in situ heating in the scanning transmission electron microscope to probe the effect of heating on distinct defect types. We apply a real space, local strain mapping technique, which allows us to identify tensile and shear strain in the atomic lattice, highlighting tensile, shear, and bending defects in interdot connections. We also track the out-of-plane orientation of individual QDs and infer the prevalence of out-of-plane twisting and bending defects as a function of annealing. We find that tensile and shear defects are fully relaxed upon mild thermal annealing, while bending defects persist. Additionally, out-of-plane orientation tracking reveals an increase in correctly oriented QDs, pointing to a relaxation of either twisting defects or out-of-plane bending defects. While bending defects remain, highlighting the need for further study of orientational ordering during the preattachment phase of superlattice formation, these atomic-scale insights show that annealing can effectively eliminate tensile and shear defects, a promising step toward delocalization of charge carriers and tunable electronic properties.

The recent observation of superconductivity in [Formula: see text] has raised fundamental questions about the hierarchy of the underlying electronic structure. Calculations suggest that this system falls in the Mott-Hubbard regime, rather than the charge-transfer configuration of other nickel oxides and the superconducting cuprates. Here, we use state-of-the-art, locally resolved electron energy-loss spectroscopy to directly probe the Mott-Hubbard character of [Formula: see text] Upon doping, we observe emergent hybridization reminiscent of the Zhang-Rice singlet via the oxygen-projected states, modification of the Nd 5d states, and the systematic evolution of Ni 3d hybridization and filling. These experimental data provide direct evidence for the multiband electronic structure of the superconducting infinite-layer nickelates, particularly via the effects of hole doping on not only the oxygen but also nickel and rare-earth bands., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing interest., (Copyright © 2021 the Author(s). The physiochemical nature of reactive metal electrodeposits during the early stages of electrodeposition is rarely studied but known to play an important role in determining the electrochemical stability and reversibility of electrochemical cells that utilize reactive metals as anodes. We investigated the early-stage growth dynamics and reversibility of electrodeposited lithium in liquid electrolytes infused with brominated additives. On the basis of equilibrium theories, we hypothesize that by regulating the surface energetics and surface ion/adatom transport characteristics of the interphases formed on Li, Br-rich electrolytes alter the morphology of early-stage Li electrodeposits; enabling late-stage control of growth and high electrode reversibility. A combination of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), image analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and contact angle goniometry are employed to evaluate this hypothesis by examining the physical-chemical features of the material phases formed on Li. We report that it is possible to achieve fine control of the early-stage Li electrodeposit morphology through tuning of surface energetic and ion diffusion properties of interphases formed on Li. This control is shown further to translate to better control of Li electrodeposit morphology and high electrochemical reversibility during deep cycling of the Li metal anode. Our results show that understanding and eliminating morphological and chemical instabilities in the initial stages of Li electroplating via deliberately modifying energetics of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) is a feasible approach in realization of deeply cyclable reactive metal batteries., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing interest.

The small-polaron hopping model has been used for six decades to rationalize electronic charge transport in oxides. The model was developed for binary oxides, and, despite its significance, its accuracy has not been rigorously tested for higher-order oxides. Here, the small-polaron transport model is tested by using a spinel system with mixed cation oxidation states (Mn x Fe 3- x O 4 ). Using molecular-beam epitaxy (MBE), a series of single crystal Mn x Fe 3- x O 4 thin films with controlled stoichiometry, 0 ≤ x ≤ 2.3, and lattice strain are grown, and the cation site-occupation is determined through X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES). Density functional theory + U analysis shows that charge transport occurs only between like-cations (Fe/Fe or Mn/Mn). The site-occupation data and percolation models show that there are limited stoichiometric ranges for transport along Fe and Mn pathways. Furthermore, due to asymmetric hopping barriers and formation energies, the Mn O h 2 + polaron is energetically preferred to the Fe O h 2 + polaron, resulting in an asymmetric contribution of Mn/Mn pathways. All of these findings are not contained in the conventional small-polaron hopping model, highlighting its inadequacy. To correct the model, new parameters in the nearest-neighbor hopping equation are introduced to account for percolation, cross-hopping, and polaron-distribution, and it is found that a near-perfect correlation can be made between experiment and theory for the electronic conductivity., (© 2020 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)

The capacity of soil as a carbon (C) sink is mediated by interactions between organic matter and mineral phases. However, previously proposed layered accumulation of organic matter within aggregate organo-mineral microstructures has not yet been confirmed by direct visualization at the necessary nanometer-scale spatial resolution. Here, we identify disordered micrometer-size organic phases rather than previously reported ordered gradients in C functional groups. Using cryo-electron microscopy with electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), we show organo-organic interfaces in contrast to exclusively organo-mineral interfaces. Single-digit nanometer-size layers of C forms were detected at the organo-organic interface, showing alkyl C and nitrogen (N) enrichment (by 4 and 7%, respectively). At the organo-mineral interface, 88% (72-92%) and 33% (16-53%) enrichment of N and oxidized C, respectively, indicate different stabilization processes than at organo-organic interfaces. However, N enrichment at both interface types points towards the importance of N-rich residues for greater C sequestration.

Transition-metal dichalcogenides containing tellurium anions show remarkable charge-lattice modulated structures and prominent interlayer character. Using cryogenic scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), we map the atomic-scale structures of the high temperature (HT) and low temperature (LT) modulated phases in 1T^{'}-TaTe_{2}. At HT, we directly show in-plane metal distortions which form trimerized clusters and staggered, three-layer stacking. In the LT phase at 93 K, we visualize an additional trimerization of Ta sites and subtle distortions of Te sites by extracting structural information from contrast modulations in plan-view STEM data. Coupled with density functional theory calculations and image simulations, this approach opens the door for atomic-scale visualizations of low temperature phase transitions and complex displacements in a variety of layered systems.

The formation of defect-free two-dimensional nanocrystal (NC) superstructures remains a challenge as persistent defects hinder charge delocalization and related device performance. Understanding defect formation is an important step toward developing strategies to mitigate their formation. However, specific mechanisms of defect formation are difficult to determine, as superlattice phase transformations that occur during fabrication are quite complex and there are a variety of factors influencing the disorder in the final structure. Here, we use Molecular Dynamics (MD) and electron microscopy in concert to investigate the nucleation of the epitaxial attachment of lead chalcogenide (PbX, where X = S, Se) NC assemblies. We use an updated implementation of an existing reactive force field in an MD framework to investigate how initial orientational (mis)alignment of the constituent building blocks impacts the final structure of the epitaxially connected superlattice. This Simple Molecular Reactive Force Field (SMRFF) captures both short-range covalent forces and long-range electrostatic forces and allows us to follow orientational and translational changes of NCs during superlattice transformation. Our simulations reveal how robust the oriented attachment is with regard to the initial configuration of the NCs, measuring its sensitivity to both in-plane and out-of-plane misorientation. We show that oriented attachment nucleates through the initial formation of dimers, which corroborate experimentally observed structures. We present high-resolution structural analysis of dimers at early stages of the superlattice transformation and rationalize their contribution to the formation of defects in the final superlattice. Collectively, the simulations and experiments presented in this paper provide insights into the nucleation of NC oriented attachment, the impact of the initial configuration of NCs on the structural fidelity of the final epitaxially connected superlattice, and the propensity to form commonly observed defects, such as missing bridges and atomic misalignment in the superlattice due to the formation of dimers. We present potential strategies to mitigate the formation of superlattice defects.
