To probe its environment, the flying insect controllably flexes, twists, and maneuvers its antennae by coupling mechanical deformations with the sensory output. We question how the materials properties of insect antennae could influence their performance. A comparative study was conducted on four hawkmoth species: Manduca sexta, Ceratomia catalpae, Manduca quinquemaculata, and Xylophanes tersa. The morphology of the antennae of three hawkmoths that hover while feeding and one putatively non-nectar-feeding hawkmoth (Ceratomia catalpa) do not fundamentally differ, and all the antennae are comb-like (i.e., pectinate), markedly in males but weakly in females. Applying different weights to the free end of extracted cantilevered antennae, we discovered anisotropy in flexural rigidity when the antenna is forced to bend dorsally versus ventrally. The flexural rigidity of male antennae was less than that of females. Compared with the hawkmoths that hover while feeding, Ceratomia catalpae has almost two orders of magnitude lower flexural rigidity. Tensile tests showed that the stiffness of male and female antennae is almost the same. Therefore, the differences in flexural rigidity are explained by the distinct shapes of the antennal pectination. Like bristles in a comb, the pectinations provide extra rigidity to the antenna. We discuss the biological implications of these discoveries in relation to the flight habits of hawkmoths. Flexural anisotropy of antennae is expected in other groups of insects, but the targeted outcome may differ. Our work offers promising new applications of shaped fibers as mechanical sensors. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Insect antennae are blood-filled, segmented fibers with muscles in the two basal segments. The long terminal segment is muscle-free but can be flexed. Our comparative analysis of mechanical properties of hawkmoth antennae revealed a new feature: antenna resistance to bending depends on the bending direction. Our discovery replaces the conventional textbook scenario considering hawkmoth antennae as rigid rods. We showed that the pectinate antennae of hawkmoths behave as a comb in which the bristles resist bending when they come together. This anisotropy of flexural resistance offers a new mode of environmental sensing that has never been explored. The principles we found apply to other insects with non-axisymmetric antennae. The surgical connection of blood vessels, anastomosis, is a critical procedure in many reparative, transplantation, and reconstructive surgical procedures. However, effective restoration of circulation is complicated by pathological clotting (thrombosis) or progressive occlusion due to excess cell proliferation that often leads to additional surgeries and increases morbidity and mortality risk for patients. Pharmaceutical agents have been tested to prevent these complications, but many have unacceptable systemic side effects. Therefore, an alternative approach to deliver these drugs at the site of injury in a controlled manner is necessary. The objective of this study was to develop electrospun nanofibers composed of polyester poly(lactide- co-glycolide) (PLGA), poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO), and positively charged copolymer, poly(lactide- co-glycolide)- graft-polyethylenimine (PgP) for electrostatic binding and release of heparin for application as an antithrombotic microvascular suture. PgP was synthesized with different coupling ratios between PLGA and branched polyethylenimine (bPEI) to obtain PgP 1 (∼1 PLGA grafted to 1 bPEI) and PgP 3.7 (∼3.7 PLGA grafted to 1 bPEI). Nanofiber yarns (PLGA/PEO/PgP 1 and PLGA/PEO/PgP 3.7 ) were fabricated by electrospinning. Heparin immobilization on the positively charged nanofiber yarns was visualized using fluorescein-conjugated heparin (F-Hep), and the amount of immobilized F-Hep was higher on both PLGA/PEO/PgP 3.7 and PLGA/PEO/PgP 1 than yarns without PgP (PLGA/PEO). We also found that F-Hep was released from both PgP-containing yarns in a sustained manner over 20 days, while over 60% of F-Hep was released within 4 h from PLGA/PEO. Finally, we observed that heparin-eluting nanofiber yarns with both PgP 1 and PgP 3.7 showed significantly longer clotting times than nanofiber yarns without PgP. The clotting time of PLGA/PEO/PgP 3.7 was not significantly different than that of free heparin (0.5 μg/mL). These results show that heparin-eluting electrospun nanofiber yarns may offer a basis for the development of microvascular sutures with anticoagulant activity.

We report on the development of a multifunctional magnetic rotator that has been built and used during the last five years by two groups from Clemson and Drexel Universities studying the rheological properties of microdroplets. This magnetic rotator allows one to generate rotating magnetic fields in a broad frequency band, from hertz to tens kilohertz. We illustrate its flexibility and robustness by conducting the rheological studies of simple and polymeric fluids at the nano and microscale. First we reproduce a temperature-dependent viscosity of a synthetic oil used as a viscosity standard. Magnetic rotational spectroscopy with suspended nickel nanorods was used in these studies. As a second example, we converted the magnetic rotator into a pump with precise controlled flow modulation. Using multiwalled carbon nanotubes, we were able to estimate the shear modulus of sickle hemoglobin polymer. We believe that this multifunctional magnetic system will be useful not only for micro and nanorheological studies, but it will find much broader applications requiring remote controlled manipulation of micro and nanoobjects.

While nanocrystalline diamond is quickly becoming one of the most widely studied nanomaterials, achieving a large fraction of diamond nanoparticles in a polymer coating has been an unresolved problem. In this work, polymer nano- and microfibers containing high loadings of 5 nm diamond particles (up to 80 wt % in polyacrylonitrile and 40% in polyamide 11) have been demonstrated using electrospun nanofibers as a delivery vehicle. The electrospun nanofibers with a high load of nanodiamond in the polymers were fused into thin transparent films, which had high mechanical properties; an improvement of 4 times for the Young's modulus and 2 times for the hardness was observed already at 20% nanodiamond in polyamide 11. These films can provide UV protection and scratch resistance to a variety of surfaces, especially in applications where a combination of mechanical, thermal, and dielectric properties is required.

The use of carbon nanomaterials in various applications requires precise control of their surface and bulk properties. In this paper, we present a strategy for modifying the surface chemistry, wettability, and electrical conductivity of carbon tubes and films through annealing in a vacuum. Experiments were conducted with 60-300 nm nanotubes (nanopipes), produced by noncatalytic chemical vapor deposition (CVD) in a porous alumina template, and with thin films deposited by the same technique on a glassy carbon substrate having the same structure and chemistry of the CNTs. The surface of the as-produced CVD-carbon, treated with sodium hydroxide to remove the alumina template, is hydrophilic, and the bulk electrical conductivity is lower by a factor of 20 than that of fully graphitic multiwalled nanotubes (MWNT) or bulk graphite. The bulk electrical conductivity increases to the conductivity of graphite after annealing at 2000 degrees C in a high vacuum. The analysis of CNTs by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Raman spectroscopy shows the ordering of carbon accompanied by an exponential increase of the in-plane crystallite size, L(a), with increasing annealing temperature. Environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM) was used to study the interaction of CNT with water, and contact angle measurements performed using the sessile drop method on CVD-carbon films demonstrate that the contact angle increases nearly linearly with increasing annealing temperature.

We describe a simple and versatile technique to produce magnetic tubes by filling carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with paramagnetic iron oxide particles ( approximately 10 nm diameter). Commercial ferrofluids were used to fill CNTs with an average outer diameter of 300 nm made via chemical vapor deposition into alumina membranes. Transmission electron microscopy study shows a high density of particles inside the CNT. Experiments using external magnetic fields demonstrate that almost 100% of the nanotubes become magnetic and can be easily manipulated in magnetic field. These one-dimensional magnetic nanostructures can find numerous applications in nanotechnology, memory devices, optical transducers for wearable electronics, and in medicine.
