Cannabis use is a common risk factor for psychoses. But although prevalence of consumption as well as potency of cannabis increased, the incidence of schizophrenia remained stable. The discontinuation hypothesis suggests that a potential increase of psychoses incidence may be relativized by more frequent cessation of consumption due to higher rates of adverse psychosis-like intoxication effects (PLE), caused by stronger cannabis. A mixed methods online survey was administered to 441 current and past users to analyze the predictive impact of different acute intoxication effects regarding abstinence motivation/cessation of use. Our hypothesis was that PLE would be experienced as the most aversive intoxication effect and therefore have the highest predictive significance. Possible confounds were included (craving, patterns of consumption and sociodemographics). Further analyzes compared past versus current users regarding the quality of intoxication effects, suggesting that past users retrospectively experienced more unpleasant experiences than current users. Free-text data explored subjective reasons for abstinence. We found that paranoid/dysphoric intoxication effects were most predictive for abstinence motivation. Less predictive were psychosis-like intoxication effects such as hallucinations. Group comparisons revealed significant more unpleasurable and less positive intoxication effects in past users compared with current users. Current users with the intention to stop consumption showed significantly more paranoia/dysphoria intoxication compared to users with no intention to stop use. As a conclusion, different intoxication experiences have different effects on abstinence motivation and substance use behavior. Purpose: The primary objective of the present systematic review and meta-analysis was to determine the effect of differing exercise intensity on (areal) bone mineral density (BMD) at lumbar spine and hip in adults by a comparative meta-analysis., Methods: A systematic review of the literature according to the PRISMA statement included: (a) exercise trials, (b) with ≥two study arms that compared different exercise intensities, (c) intervention ≥6 months, (d) BMD assessments at lumbar spine (LS) or hip. Five electronic databases were scanned without language restrictions up to July 2021. The present analysis of exercise intensity was conducted as a mixed-effect meta-analysis and applied "type of exercise" and "study duration" as moderator in subgroup analyses. Outcome measures were standardized mean differences (SMD) for BMD changes at the LS, and hip., Results: Eleven exercise studies with 26 study arms were included. Although the effect of high-intensity exercise was more pronounced on LS-BMD (SMD: 0.19, 95%-CI: 0.61 to -0.23) and hip-ROI (0.17, 0.38 to -0.04), we did not observe significant differences between the groups (LS-BMD: p=0.373 and hip-BMD: p=0.109). We observed a substantial level of heterogeneity between the trials for LS- but not for hip-BMD. Applying "type of exercise" and "study duration" as moderators did not significantly modify the differences between low and high exercise intensity on BMD at LS or hip., Conclusion: There is insufficient evidence for a superior effect of high-intensity exercise on areal BMD at lumbar spine and hip in people aged 50 years and older. Varying exercise intensity with periods of lower exercise intensity intermitted by higher intensity might be a promising option to address the issue of exercise intensities in intervention studies., (© 2022. In contrast to postmenopausal women, evidence for a favorable effect of exercise on Bone Mineral Density (BMD) is still limited for men. This might be due to the paucity of studies, but also to the great variety of participants and study characteristics that may dilute study results. The aim of the present systematic review and meta-analysis was to evaluate the effect of exercise on BMD changes with rational eligibility criteria. A comprehensive search of six electronic databases up to 15 March 2021 was conducted. Briefly, controlled trials ≥6 months that determined changes in areal BMD in men >18 years old, with no apparent diseases or pharmacological therapy that relevantly affect bone metabolism, were included. BMD changes (standardized mean differences: SMD) of the lumbar spine (LS) and femoral neck (FN) were considered as outcomes. Twelve studies with 16 exercise and 12 control groups were identified. The pooled estimate of random-effect analysis was SMD = 0.38, 95%-CI: 0.14-0.61 and SMD = 0.25, 95%-CI: 0.00-0.49, for LS and FN, respectively. Heterogeneity between the trials was low-moderate. Funnel plots and rank and regression correlation tests indicate evidence for small study publication bias for LS but not FN-BMD. Subgroup analyses that focus on study length, type of exercise and methodologic quality revealed no significant difference between each of the three categories. In summary, we provided further evidence for a low but significant effect of exercise on BMD in men. However, we are currently unable to give even rough exercise recommendations for male cohorts.

In peripheral spatial cueing paradigms, exogenous attentional capture is commonly observed after salient onset cues or with cues contingent on target characteristics. We proposed that exogenously captured attention disrupts the selectivity to target features. We tested this by experimentally emulating the everyday observation that in a viewing situation in which the observer is monitoring a stationary display fort change to occur, the onset of a salient stimulus (onset cue) or a change in a stationary stimulus similar to the expected one (contingent cue) has a distracting effect. As predicted, we found that both types of cues reduced the target detection sensitivity but enhanced the bias to respond in a go-nogo-paradigm. With the onset cue, the sensitivity loss was more pronounced at the side of the cue, whereas the contingent cue affected both sides likewise. Moreover, the effects of the onset cue interacted with the task difficulty: the more selectivity a task required the more immune it was against disruption, but the more likely was a response. We concluded that onset capture disrupts selective attention by adding noise to the processing of the target location. The effects of contingent capture could be explained with cue-target confounding. Finally, we suggest a new model of attentional capture in which exogenous and endogenous components interact in a dynamic way.
