Advancements in electronic devices demand materials capable of exceptional performance in various challenging environments. This study presents polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) nonwoven membranes with controlled porosity, created using an air-guided electrospinning method, followed by a calendaring process. These membranes exhibit a combination of water-repellent properties and sound transmission capabilities, making them ideal candidates for use in air and acoustic vents in electronic systems. A key feature of our membrane is the three-dimensional nanostructured pores, ranging from 0.20 to 0.76 μm, with a mean pore size of 0.51 μm, achieved through the formation of randomly arranged long nanofibers. By employing both experimental and theoretical methods, we achieved impressive performance metrics: air permeability of 0.86 cm 3 /cm 2 /s, water contact angles up to 139.3°, and breakthrough pressure as low as 0.27 MPa. Our PVDF nonwoven membranes maintain an optimal balance of stiffness, density, and air permeability, leading to exceptionally low sound transmission loss values ranging between -10 and -40 dBV/Pa, all while preserving their structural integrity. These findings contribute to the development of next-generation waterproof and acoustically permeable membranes, offering enhanced performance capabilities in demanding operational scenarios. This work advances the field of nanomaterials, environmental engineering, and acoustic technologies, with the potential to influence the design of future electronic devices.

Carbon nanotubes are a significant class of nanomaterials with distinctive properties that have led to their application in a variety of fields, such as polymer composites, medicine, electronics, and material science. However, their nonpolar nature and insolubility in polar solvents limit their applications. To address this issue, highly functionalized and water-soluble double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWNTs) were developed by selectively oxidizing the inner walls of the DWNTs using oleum and nitric acid. The impact of reaction time on the chemical functionalization of DWNTs was investigated under two different reaction durations of 2 and 24 h. The presence of highly oxygenated functional groups resulted in high water solubility, which was confirmed by high- and low-frequency Raman spectroscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method, and optical spectroscopy. The conductivity of highly water-soluble W-DWNTs (24 h) was 122.65 × 10 2 S cm -1 . After annealing for 12 h at 140 °C, the W-DWNTs retained 72% of their conductivity (88.79 × 10 2 S cm -1 ).

Activated carbons (ACs) are the most widely used and attractive support materials for electrocatalytic applications because of their significant surface areas, high electrical conductivities, and moderate affinities toward supported metal catalysts. However, the corrosive behavior of ACs at oxidative potentials causes an inevitable reduction in the active surface area of supported catalysts, resulting in the continuous deterioration of their electrocatalytic performance. Therefore, the introduction of corrosion-resistant durable catalyst supports is essential for sustainable and efficient electrocatalysis. Here, we modified ACs to obtain different boron (B)-doped structures via doping-temperature controls to investigate the corrosion resistance of B-doped ACs. With increasing doping temperature, the B-doped ACs exhibited a decreased defect density and enhanced crystallinity owing to the accelerating dopant-induced graphitization. We found that the substitution of B atoms into the carbon lattice improved the structural integrity of the carbon structure, and cyclic voltammetry (CV) tests suggested that the highly B-substituted structures caused electrochemical surface passivation against carbon corrosion. Moreover, B-doped ACs significantly contributed to the increase in loading mass of cobalt (Co)-based catalyst on them and the electrochemical durability toward the oxygen evolution reaction as catalyst-support hybrid. The B22 (B-doped AC obtained at a 2200 °C B-doping temperature)-supported Co catalyst with the lowest oxidation current exhibited a voltage change of 32 mV at a current density of 10 mA/cm 2 (Δ E j =10 ) after 10,000 cycles, which was a factor of ∼7 higher cycle durability and stability than that of the conventional IrO 2 catalyst (Δ E j =10 = 205 mV). Here, we propose that surface engineering by B-doping to improve the structural integrity of ACs is an attractive method for designing durable electrocatalytic support materials.

Microgels are three-dimensional (3D) colloidal hydrogel particles with outstanding features such as biocompatibility, good mechanical properties, tunable sizes from submicrometer to tens of nanometers, and large surface areas. Because of these unique qualities, microgels have been widely used in various applications. Carbon-based materials (CMs) with various dimensions (0-3D) have recently been investigated as promising candidates for the design and fabrication of microgels because of their large surface area, excellent conductivity, unique chemical stability, and low cost. Here, we provide a critical review of the specific characteristics of CMs that are being incorporated into microgels, as well as the state-of-the art applications of CM-microgels in pollutant adsorption and photodegradation, H 2 evoluation, CO 2 capture, soil conditioners, water retention, drug delivery, cell encapsulation, and tissue engineering. Advanced preparation techniques for CM-microgel systems are also summarized and discussed. Finally, challenges related to the low colloidal stability of CM-microgels and development strategies are examined. Herein, a sequential gas-phase process involving air jet milling followed by chemical vapor deposition (CVD), is demonstrated to be an efficient strategy for the fabrication of heterolayered 2D nanohybrids (2DNHs) decorated with nanocatalysts. Tens of grams of the nanohybrids, which is a substantial quantity at the laboratory scale, are produced in the absence of solvents and water, and without the need for an extra purification procedure. Air jet milling enables the development of binary/ternary heterolayered structures consisting of graphene, WSe 2 , and/or MoS 2 via the gas-phase co-exfoliation of their bulk counterparts. Based on the X-ray photoelectron and Raman spectroscopy data, the heterolayers of the 2DNHs exert chemical and electronic effects on each other, while diminishing the interactions between same-component layers. Moreover, the electrochemically active surface area increases by >190% and the charge transfer resistance decreases by >35%. CVD is performed to introduce Pt and Ru nanoparticles with diameters of a few nanometers as additional electrocatalysts into the 2DNHs. The nanocatalyst-decorated 2DNHs show excellent performance for the production of hydrogen and oxygen gases in water-splitting cells. Investigating the surface properties of heteroatom-doped carbon materials is essential because these versatile materials have found use in a variety of energy and environmental applications; an understanding of these properties would also lead to an improved appreciation of the direct interaction between the reactant and the functionalized surface. Herein, we explore the effect of boron (B) doping on the surface properties of activated carbon (AC) materials based on their water adsorption behavior and oxygen reduction reaction. In the high-temperature B doping process, B-doped AC materials at 1400 °C exhibit an open pore structure with B-O bonds, whereas at a temperature of 1600 °C, a nonporous structure containing a large amount of B-C bonds prevails. The B-O species act as active sites for water adsorption on the carbon surface. On the basis of the isothermal adsorption heat, we suggest that B atoms are present at the pore openings and on the surfaces. The B-O moieties at the open edges improve the electrocatalytic activity, whereas the B-C bonds at the closed edges decrease the electrocatalytic activity because of the stable structure of these bonds. Our findings provide new evidence for the electrocatalytic properties associated with the structure of B-doped edges.

This paper demonstrates the hierarchical design of functional, fibrous polymer monoliths. The monoliths are composed of conjugated microporous polymers that not only are embedded with heteroatoms but also feature fibrous yet compressible structures due to the in situ self-assembly process that occurs during the polymerization process. Therefore, the doped nitrogen atoms can allow the growth of zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF) nanocrystals, which causes the homogeneous encapsulation of individual fibers. The resulting hybrid monoliths exhibit enhanced physical properties as well as catalytic activity, allowing the formation of an additional coating layer via a thiol-epoxy reaction. The deliberate inclusion of template molecules during the reaction forms molecularly imprinted sites on the fibers to afford functional monoliths. As a proof of concept, the hierarchically designed materials are able to show effective recognition properties toward diethylstilbestrol, an endocrine disruptor, taking advantage of the binding sites that selectively capture the analyte molecules and the fibrous morphology that increases the accessibility of these binding sites. We envisage that the incorporation of various heteroatoms or nanocrystals will bring about the bespoke design of advanced monoliths with autonomous functions, leading to smart textile systems.

Linear carbon chains (LCCs) are one-dimensional materials with unique properties, including high Debye temperatures and restricted selection rules for phonon interactions. Consequently, their Raman C-band frequency's temperature dependence is a probe to their thermal properties, which are well described within the Debye formalism even at room temperatures. Therefore, with the basis on a semiempirical approach we show how to use the C band to evaluate the LCCs' internal energy, heat capacity, coefficient of thermal expansion, thermal strain, and Grüneisen parameter, providing universal relations for these quantities in terms of the number of carbons atoms and the temperature.

The objective of this study is to fabricate an electrode by frictional sliding caused by a rough paper surface. The pressure exerted during drawing induces adsorption of the graphite particles by the rough paper and simultaneously reduces the surface roughness of the paper electrode. Repetitive drawing in one-way direction reduced the roughness of the paper surface, decreasing the grain boundaries of graphite. This increases the electron pathway at the electrode, thus reducing the resistance to less than 50 Ω. At the same time, repetitive drawing could confirm that unstable errors caused by the hand could help converge within a certain margin of error. We quantified the relationship between pressure and resistance when drawing on the electrode using a pencil hardness tester. In addition, the electrodes formed by repeated drawing generated a new surface grain and boundary, parallel to the drawing direction, and changed the electrode characteristics with respect to the drawing direction. The grain boundary difference based on the drawing direction was measured via a heating test of the foldable device, a sound pressure level, and laser scattering vibrometer measurements of a linear speaker. Influenza is an annual epidemic and an occasional pandemic caused by pathogens that are responsible for infectious respiratory disease. Humans are highly susceptible to the infection mediated by influenza A viruses (IAV). The entry of the virus is mediated by the influenza virus hemagglutinin (HA) glycoprotein that binds to the cellular sialic acid receptors and facilitates the fusion of the viral membrane with the endosomal membrane. During IAV infection, virus-derived pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) are recognized by host intracellular specific sensors including toll-like receptors (TLRs), C-type lectin receptors, retinoic acid-inducible gene-I (RIG-I)-like receptors (RLRs), and nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain (NOD)-like receptors (NLRs) either on the cell surface or intracellularly in endosomes. Herein, we comprehensively review the current knowledge available on the entry of the influenza virus into host cells and the molecular details of the influenza virus-host interface. We also highlight certain strategies for the development of universal influenza vaccines.

When cancer metastasizes to bone, the resulting pain and functional disorders due to bone destruction adversely affect the patient's quality of life. We have developed a new cancer metastasis control system consisting of anticancer agents conjugated to carbon fibers (CFs), which are nonbiodegradable, carriers of a wide variety of molecules with extremely high affinity for bone. In the evaluation of cancer suppression effects on Walker 256 cancer cells, cisplatin (CDDP)-conjugated CFs (CF-CDDP) were found to be as effective in cancer suppression as CDDP. In the evaluation of the cancer suppression effects of local injection in the rat model of tibial cancer bone metastasis, similar cancer suppression was noted in the CF-CDDP group and CDDP group; however, blood Pt concentrations were significantly lower in the CF-CDDP group. Experiments with CDDP and CF-CDDP injected into bone actually destroyed by cancer metastases revealed the presence of significantly more newly formed bone tissue with the administration of CF-CDDP. Isolated linear carbon chains (LCCs) encapsulated by multiwalled carbon nanotubes are studied under hydrostatic pressure (P) via resonance Raman scattering. The LCCs' spectroscopic signature C band around 1850  cm^{-1} softens linearly with increasing P. A simple anharmonic force-constant model not only describes such softening but also shows that the LCCs' Young's modulus (E), Grüneisen parameter (γ), and strain (ϵ) follow universal P^{-1} and P^{2} laws, respectively. In particular, γ also presents a unified behavior for all LCCs. To the best of our knowledge, these are the first results reported on such isolated systems and the first work to explore universal P-dependent responses for LCCs' E, ϵ, and γ.

A biosensor is defined as a measuring system that includes a biological receptor unit with distinctive specificities toward target analytes. Such analytes include a wide range of biological origins such as DNAs of bacteria or viruses, or proteins generated from an immune system of infected or contaminated living organisms. They further include simple molecules such as glucose, ions, and vitamins. One of the major challenges in biosensor development is achieving efficient signal capture of biological recognition-transduction events. Carbon nanomaterials (CNs) are promising candidates to improve the sensitivity of biosensors while attaining low detection limits owing to their capability of immobilizing large quantities of bioreceptor units at a reduced volume, and they can also act as a transduction element. In addition, CNs can be adapted to functionalization and conjugation with organic compounds or metallic nanoparticles; the creation of surface functional groups offers new properties (e.g., physical, chemical, mechanical, electrical, and optical properties) to the nanomaterials. Because of these intriguing features, CNs have been extensively employed in biosensor applications. In particular, carbon nanotubes (CNTs), nanodiamonds, graphene, and fullerenes serve as scaffolds for the immobilization of biomolecules at their surface and are also used as transducers for the conversion of signals associated with the recognition of biological analytes. Herein, we provide a comprehensive review on the synthesis of CNs and their potential application to biosensors. In addition, we discuss the efforts to improve the mechanical and electrical properties of biosensors by combining different CNs.

To understand the effect of microstructural characteristics of carbon materials on their electrochemical or electrocatalytic performance, an in-depth study of the edges in carbon materials should be carried out. In this study, catalytically grown platelet-type carbon nanofibers (CNFs) with fully exposed edges were physically and chemically passivated to clarify the relationship between the edge density and the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity. Due to the aligned structure along the fiber axis, the edges on the outer surface of the CNFs were easily modified without using a complex process. The edges on the surface of the CNFs were inactivated by sequentially forming single, double, and multiple loops as the heat treatment temperatures increased. The number of edges within the CNFs was quantitatively measured using temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) up to 1800 °C. The surviving edges on the surface of thermally treated CNFs were identified by chemical functionalization via an amination reaction. We identified a close relationship between the HER activity and the edge density. When evaluating the electrochemical and electrocatalytic activity of carbon materials, it is important to know the portion of the edge surface area with respect to the total surface area and edge ratio.

SWCNTs were individually dispersed in ethylne glycol (EG) via mild bath-type sonication using quaternized poly(furfuryl methacrylate)- co -(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) p(FMA- co -QDMAEMA) as a dispersing agent. QDMAEMA, which has alkyl groups, was more favorable to the dispersion ability of single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs). The functionalization of nanocarbon materials such as graphene has attracted considerable attention over the past decades. In this work, we designed and synthesized a unique N-heterocyclic carbene compound with a pyrene tail group (NHCp) to investigate how carbene species can be used for the functionalization of graphene. Although the carbene moiety of NHCp has the ability to covalently bond to graphene, the pyrene tail can noncovalently interact with graphene and allows monitoring its surrounding microenvironment. The major characteristics of the resulting nanohybrids were highly dependent on the type of graphene and the NHCp-to-graphene weight ratio. Importantly, despite the covalent functionalization of graphene, an anomalous decrease in the intensity of the Raman D peak and improved conductivity were observed for the nanohybrids. It was found that the covalent bond of NHCp to the graphene edge may allow the hybridization of their orbitals, which affects electronic energy levels and alters the double resonance process that originates the D peak at the edge defect. Importantly, the NHCp compound can act as a π acceptor (not just as a σ donor) via the NHCp-graphene covalent bridge. This is the first report showing that the concept of π-backdonation can be realized in two-dimensional materials, such as graphene, and rationally designed carbene molecules can functionalize graphene without losing their beneficial sp2 hybridization characteristics.

There has been an increasing amount of research on regenerative medicine for the treatment of bone defects. Scaffolds are needed for the formation of new bone, and various scaffolding materials have been evaluated for bone regeneration. Materials with pores that allow cells to differentiate into osteocytes are preferred in scaffolds for bone regeneration, and porous materials and fibers are well suited for this application. Electrospinning is an effective method for producing a nanosized fiber by applying a high voltage to the needle tip containing a polymer solution. The use of electrospun nanofibers is being studied in the medical field, and its use as a scaffold for bone regeneration therapy has become a topic of growing interest. In this review, we will introduce the potential use of electrospun nanofiber as a scaffold for bone regenerative medicine with a focus on carbon nanofibers produced by the electrospinning method.

Insulating polymers have received little attention in electronic applications. Here, we synthesize a photoresponsive, amphiphilic block copolymer (PEO-b-PVBO) and further control the chain growth of the block segment (PVBO) to obtain different degrees of polymerization (DPs). The benzylidene oxazolone moiety in PEO-b-PVBO facilitated chain-conformational changes due to photoisomerization under visible/ultraviolet (UV) light illumination. Intercalation of the photoresponsive but electrically insulating PEO-b-PVBO into graphene sheets enabled electrical monitoring of the conformational change of the block copolymer at the molecular level. The current change at the microampere level was proportional to the DP of PVBO, demonstrating that the PEO-b-PVBO-intercalated graphene nanohybrid (PGNH) can be used in UV sensors. Additionally, discrete signals at the nanoampere level were separated from the first derivative of the time-dependent current using the fast Fourier transform (FFT). Analysis of the harmonic frequencies using the FFT revealed that the PGNH afforded sawtooth-type current flow mediated by Coulomb blockade oscillation.

Nitrogen (N)-doped nanostructured carbons have been actively examined as promising alternatives for precious-metal catalysts in various electrochemical energy generation systems. Herein, an effective approach for synthesizing N-doped single-walled carbon nanohorns (SWNHs) with highly electrocatalytic active sites via controlled oxidation followed by N 2 plasma is presented. Nanosized holes were created on the conical tips and sidewalls of SWNHs under mild oxidation, and subsequently, the edges of the holes were easily decorated with N atoms. The N atoms were present preferentially in a pyridinic configuration along the edges of the nanosized holes without significant structural change of the SWNHs. The enriched edges decorated with the pyridinic-N atoms at the atomic scale increased the number of active sites for the oxygen reduction reaction, and the inherent spherical three-dimensional feature of the SWNHs provided good electrical conductivity and excellent mass transport. We demonstrated an effective method for promoting the electrocatalytic active sites within N-doped SWNHs by combining defect engineering with the preferential formation of N atoms having a specific configuration.

Nitrogen enriched carbon nanofibers have been obtained by one-step carbonization/activation of PAN-based nanofibers with various concentrations of melamine at 800 °C under a N 2 atmosphere. As synthesised carbon nanofibers were directly used as electrodes for symmetric supercapacitors. The obtained PAN-MEL fibers with 5% melamine stabilised at 280 °C and carbonized at 800 °C under a nitrogen atmosphere showed excellent electrochemical performance with a specific capacitance of up to 166 F g -1 at a current density of 1A g -1 using 6 M KOH electrolyte and a capacity retention of 109.7% after 3000 cycles. It shows a 48% increase as compared to pristine carbon nanofibers. Two electrode systems of the CNFM5 sample showed high energy densities of 23.72 to 12.50 W h kg -1 at power densities from 400 to 30 000 W kg -1 . When used as an anode for Li-ion battery application the CNFM5 sample showed a high specific capacity up to 435.47 mA h g -1 at 20 mA g -1 , good rate capacity and excellent cycling performance (365 mA h g -1 specific capacity even after 200 cycles at 100 mA g -1 ). The thermal conductivity enhancement of neat poly(vinyl alcohol) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) composite was attempted via electrospinning. The suspended microdevice technique was applied to measure the thermal conductivity of electrospun nanofibers (NFs). Neat PVA NFs and PVA/CNC NFs with a diameter of approximately 200 nm showed thermal conductivities of 1.23 and 0.74 W/m-K, respectively, at room temperature, which are higher than that of bulk PVA by factors of 6 and 3.5, respectively. Material characterization by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and thermogravimetric analysis confirmed that the thermal conductivity of the PVA/CNC NFs was enhanced by the reinforcement of their backbone rigidity, while that of the neat PVA NFs was attributed to the increase in their crystallinity that occurred during the electrospinning.

This study has demonstrated the design of stimuli-responsive double-network hydrogels that are formed by sequential polymerization and show chemical transformation by selective de-cross-linking without structural failure owing to chemical orthogonality. Each self-immolative and thermoresponsive network established together the double-network structure through a thiol-ene click reaction and radical polymerization. The hydrogel exhibited enhanced mechanical strength but chemically transformed through the selective de-cross-linking of specific network triggered by a molecular stimulus, which significantly alters physical properties of the material such as tunable toughness and lower critical solution temperature behavior. In addition, the material displayed a thermoresponsive, controlled release. Only after treatment with the stimulus did the hydrogel release cargo molecules on demand via de-cross-linking while maintaining the entire structure.

We demonstrate selective nitrogen doping on the outer tubes of double walled carbon nanotubes by nitrogen plasma treatment. Such selectivity improves the chemical activity of the outer tubes, including their wettability and oxygen reduction reaction properties, while retaining the structural, optical, and electrical properties of the inner tubes.

We explored the effect of substitutional boron doping on the electrical conductivity of a metallicity-separated single walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) assembly. Boron atoms were introduced into semiconducting (S)- and metallic (M)-SWCNT assemblies using high temperature thermal diffusion and the concentration of the doped boron atoms was controlled by the thermal treatment temperature. Depending on the conduction mechanism of the SWCNT assembly, both positive and negative effects upon boron incorporation are observed. For the S-SWCNT sheet, the electrical resistivity decreased by about 1 order on introduction of a small amount of boron atoms, due to the localized state for hopping conduction. In contrast, we observed an increase in the electrical resistivity on boron doping for M-SWCNTs. The pristine and boron doped metallic SWCNTs exhibited a tendency of decreasing electrical resistivity in the presence of an external magnetic field perpendicular to the film, which indicated two-dimensional weak localization behavior. A detailed analysis of the resistivity and the magnetoresistance implied that an increase in the inelastic scattering event at the doped boron site reduced the phase coherence length, leading to an increase in the electrical resistivity.

Charge transport in π-conjugated polymer films involves π-π interactions within or between polymer chains. Here, we demonstrate a facile solution processing strategy that provides enhanced intra- and interchain π-π interactions of the resultant polymer films using a good solvent additive with low volatility. These increased interactions result in enhanced charge transport properties. The effect of the good solvent additive on the intra- and intermolecular interactions, morphologies, and charge transport properties of poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) films is systematically investigated. We found that the good solvent additive facilitates the self-assembly of P3HT chains into crystalline fibrillar nanostructures by extending the solvent drying time during thin-film formation. As compared to the prior approach using a nonsolvent additive with low volatility, the solvent blend system containing a good solvent additive results in enhanced charge transport in P3HT organic field-effect transistor (OFET) devices [from ca. 1.7 × 10 -2 to ca. 8.2 × 10 -2 cm 2 V -1 s -1 for dichlorobenzene (DCB) versus 4.4 × 10 -2 cm 2 V -1 s -1 for acetonitrile]. The mobility appears to be maximized over a broad spectrum of additive concentrations (1-7 vol %), indicative of a wide processing window. Detailed analysis results regarding the charge injection and transport characteristics of the OFET devices reveal that a high-boiling-point solvent additive decreases both the contact resistance ( R c ) and channel resistance ( R ch ), contributing to the mobility enhancement of the devices. Finally, the platform presented here is proven to be applicable to alternative good solvent additives with low volatility, such as chlorobenzene (CB) and trichlorobenzene (TCB). Specifically, the mobility enhancement of the resultant P3HT films increases in the order CB (bp 131 °C) < DCB (bp 180 °C) < TCB (bp 214 °C), suggesting that solvent additives with higher boiling points provide resultant films with preferable molecular ordering and morphologies for efficient charge transport.

Boron nitride nanoribbons (BNNRs) have very attractive electrical and optical properties due to their unique edge states and width-related properties. Herein, for the first time, BNNRs were produced by a simple reflux of boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) in nitric acid containing water, which had led to unzipped sidewalls through hydrolysis. Their high reactivity that originated from edges was verified via a strong interaction with methylene blue.

The pulsed laser deposition method was used to decorate appropriately single wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) with PbS quantum dots (QDs), leading to the formation of a novel class of SWCNTs/PbS-QDs nanohybrids (NHs), without resorting to any ligand engineering and/or surface functionalization. The number of laser ablation pulses (NLp) was used to control the average size of the PbS-QDs and their coverage on the SWCNTs' surface. Photoconductive (PC) devices fabricated from these SWCNTs/PbS-QDs NHs have shown a significantly enhanced photoresponse, which is found to be PbS-QD size dependent. Wavelength-resolved photocurrent measurements revealed a strong photoconductivity of the NHs in the UV-visible region, which is shown to be due to multiple exciton generation (MEG) in the PbS-QDs. For the 6.5 nm-diameter PbS-QDs (with a bandgap (Eg) = 0.86 eV), the MEG contribution of the NHs based PC devices was shown to lead to a normalized internal quantum efficiency in excess of 300% for photon energies ≥4.5Eg. While the lowest MEG threshold in our NHs based PC devices is found to be of ~2.5Eg, the MEG efficiency reaches values as high as 0.9 ± 0.1.

Exploring the potential catalytic applications of boron-doped carbon materials is a fascinating challenge. Here we describe that boron-doped onion-like carbon and carbon nanotubes as metal-free catalysts exhibit excellent catalytic activity and stability in nitroarene reduction under a stoichiometric amount of reductant.

Al-based composites incorporating multilayered graphene sheets were developed via a facile approach. The multilayered graphene sheets were fabricated from the expanded graphite via a simple mechanical exfoliation process. The facile extrusion molding process with Al powder and graphene sheets exfoliated from expended graphite afforded Al-based graphene composite rods. These composites showed enhanced thermal conductivity compared to the pristine Al rods. Moreover, the Al-based multilayered graphene sheet composites exhibited lower interfacial contact resistance between graphene-based electrodes than the pristine Al. With increasing degrees of dispersion, the number of exposed graphene sheets increases, thereby significantly decreasing the interfacial contact resistance between the composite and external graphite electrode.

We evaluated the synergistic effect of the hybrid-type nanocarbon, consisting of 1D thin-walled carbon nanotubes (TWNTs) and 2D reduced graphene oxide (RGO), on the shape memory performance of hyperbranched polyurethane composites. The shape recovery of the resulting composites was activated via a photothermal process using a near-infrared laser. The best laser-induced shape recovery performance was achieved for the composites with a 7/3 of TWNT/RGO ratio and a 1wt.% of nanocarbon content. Such result can be explained by good dispersion of TWNTs and RGO in the hyperbranched polymer as well as three-dimensionally enhanced interconnection between carbon nanotubes and graphenes. The optically active TWNTs with a high optical absorption section exhibited high ability of transferring laser-induced thermal energy to polymer matrix whereas RGO provided a high mechanical property to polymer matrix. The tensile modulus and electrical conductivity of the composites also showed a similar dependence on the TWNT/RGO composition ratio as the photothermal shape recovery. A new synthetic method is demonstrated for transforming rice husks into bulk amounts of graphene through its calcination and chemical activation. The bulk sample consists of crystalline nano-sized graphene and corrugated individual graphene sheets; the material generally contains one, two, or a few layers, and corrugated graphene domains are typically observed in monolayers containing topological defects within the hexagonal lattice and edges. Resonant Raman spectroscopy studies are performed to access information about the intertube interactions and wall-to-wall distances in double- and triple-walled carbon nanotubes. Here, we explain how the surroundings of the nanotubes in a multiwalled system influence their radial breathing modes. Of particular interest, the innermost tubes in double- and triple-walled carbon nanotube systems are shown to be significantly shielded from environmental interactions, except for those coming from the intertube interaction with their own respective host tubes. From a comparison of the Raman results for bundled as well as individual fullerene-peapod-derived double- and triple-walled carbon nanotubes, we observe that metallic innermost tubes, when compared to their semiconducting counterparts, clearly show weaker intertube interactions. Additionally, we discuss a correlation between the wall-to-wall distances and the frequency upshifts of the radial breathing modes observed for the innermost tubes in individual double- and triple-walled carbon nanotubes. All results allow us to contemplate fundamental properties related to DWNTs and TWNTs, as for example diameter- and chirality-dependent intertube interactions. We also discuss differences in fullerene-peapod-derived and chemical vapor deposition grown double- and triple-walled systems with the focus on mechanical coupling and interference effects.

A carbon nanotube yarn core graphitic shell hybrid fiber was fabricated via facile heat treatment of epoxy-based negative photoresist (SU-8) on carbon nanotube yarn. The effective encapsulation of carbon nanotube yarn in carbon fiber and a glassy carbon outer shell determines their physical properties. The higher electrical conductivity (than carbon fiber) of the carbon nanotube yarn overcomes the drawbacks of carbon fiber/glassy carbon, and the better properties (than carbon nanotubes) of the carbon fiber/glassy carbon make up for the lower thermal and mechanical properties of the carbon nanotube yarn via synergistic hybridization without any chemical doping and additional processes.

We report the preparation of hybrid paperlike films consisting of alternating layers of graphene (or graphene oxide) and different types of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (N-doped MWNTs, B-doped MWNTs, and pristine MWNTs). We used an efficient self-assembly method in which nanotubes were functionalized with cationic polyelectrolytes in order to make them dispersible in water, and subsequently these suspensions were mixed with graphene oxide (GO) suspensions, and the films were formed by casting/evaporation processes. The electronic properties of these films (as produced and thermally reduced) were characterized, and we found electrical resistivities as low as 3 × 10(-4) Ω cm. Furthermore, we observed that these films could be used as electron field emission sources with extraordinary efficiencies; threshold electric field of ca. 0.55 V/μm, β factor as high as of 15.19 × 10(3), and operating currents up to 220 μA. These values are significantly enhanced when compared to previous reports in the literature for other carbon nanostructured filmlike materials. We believe these hybrid foils could find other applications as scaffolds for tissue regeneration, thermal and conducting papers, and laminate composites with epoxy resins.

We have used in situ current-voltage measurements of cup-stacked carbon nanotubes (CSCNTs) to establish reversible strain induced (compressive bending) semiconducting to metallic behavior. The corresponding electrical resistance decreases by two orders of magnitude during the process, and reaches values comparable to those of highly crystalline multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and graphite. Joule heating experiments on the same CSCNTs showed that the edges of individual cups merge to form "loops" induced by the heating process. The resistance of these looped CSCNTs was close to that of highly deformed CSCNTs (and crystalline MWCNTs), thus suggesting that a similar conduction mechanism took place in both cases. Using a combination of molecular dynamics and first-principles calculations based on density functional theory, we conclude that an edge-to-edge interlayer transport mechanism results in conduction channels at the compressed side of the CSCNTs due to electronic density overlap between individual cups, thus making CSCNTs more conducting. This strain-induced CSCNT semiconductor to metal transition could potentially be applied to enable functional composite materials (e.g. mechanical sensors) with enhanced and tunable conducting properties upon compression.

The isolation of few-layered transition metal dichalcogenides has mainly been performed by mechanical and chemical exfoliation with very low yields. In this account, a controlled thermal reduction-sulfurization method is used to synthesize large-area (~1 cm(2)) WS2 sheets with thicknesses ranging from monolayers to a few layers. During synthesis, WOx thin films are first deposited on Si/SiO2 substrates, which are then sulfurized (under vacuum) at high temperatures (750-950 °C). An efficient route to transfer the synthesized WS2 films onto different substrates such as quartz and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) grids has been satisfactorily developed using concentrated HF. Samples with different thicknesses have been analyzed by Raman spectroscopy and TEM, and their photoluminescence properties have been evaluated. We demonstrated the presence of single-, bi-, and few-layered WS2 on as-grown samples. It is well known that the electronic structure of these materials is very sensitive to the number of layers, ranging from indirect band gap semiconductor in the bulk phase to direct band gap semiconductor in monolayers. This method has also proved successful in the synthesis of heterogeneous systems of MoS2 and WS2 layers, thus shedding light on the controlled production of heterolayered devices from transition metal chalcogenides.

Electrospun biopolymer-derived nanofiber webs are promising scaffolds for growing tissue and cells. However, the webs are mechanically weak and electrically insulating. We have synthesized a polyethylene oxide (PEO) nanofiber web that is pliable, tough, and electrically conductive, by incorporating optically active, DNA-wrapped, double-walled carbon nanotubes. The nanotubes were individually trapped along the length of the PEO nanofiber and acted as mechanically reinforcing filler and an electrical conductor.

In this work, we carried out chemical oxidation studies of nitrogen-doped multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNx-MWCNTs) using potassium permanganate in order to obtain nitrogen-doped graphene nanoribbons. Reaction parameters such as oxidation reaction, reaction time, the oxidizer to nanotube mass ratio, and the temperature were varied, and their effect was carefully analyzed. The presence of nitrogen atoms makes CNx-MWCNTs more reactive toward oxidation when compared to undoped multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). High-resolution transmission electron microscopy studies indicate that the oxidation of the graphitic layers within CNx-MWCNTs results in the unzipping of large diameter nanotubes and the formation of a disordered oxidized carbon coating on small diameter nanotubes. The nitrogen content within unzipped CNx-MWCNTs decreased as a function of the oxidation time, temperature, and oxidizer concentration. By controlling the degree of oxidation, the N atomic % could be reduced from 1.56% in pristine CNx-MWCNTs down to 0.31 atom % in nitrogen-doped oxidized graphene nanoribbons. A comparative thermogravimetric analysis reveals a lower thermal stability of the (unzipped) oxidized CNx-MWCNTs when compared to MWCNT samples. The oxidized graphene nanoribbons were chemically and thermally reduced and yielded nitrogen-doped graphene nanoribbons (N-GNRs). The thermal reduction at relatively low temperature (300 °C) results in graphene nanoribbons with 0.37 atom % of nitrogen. This method represents a novel route to preparation of bulk quantities of nitrogen-doped unzipped carbon nanotubes, which is able to control the doping level in the resulting reduced GNR samples. Finally, the electrochemical properties of these materials were evaluated.

The optical characterization of bundled and individual triple-walled carbon nanotubes was studied for the first time in detail by using resonant Raman spectroscopy. In our approach, the outer tube of a triple-walled carbon nanotube system protects the two inner tubes (or equivalently the inner double-walled carbon nanotube) from external environment interactions making them a partially isolated system. Following the spectral changes and line-widths of the radial breathing modes and G-band by performing laser energy dependent Raman spectroscopy, it is possible to extract important information as regards to the electronic and vibrational properties, tube diameters, wall-to-wall distances, radial breathing mode, and G-band resonance evolutions as well as high-curvature intertube interactions in isolated double- and triple-walled carbon nanotube systems.

Electrospun polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) nanofiber membranes have 3-dementional (3-D) open pore channel and hence have excellent application potential in Western blot. In this study we have modified electrospun PVDF nanofiber membrane by argon (Ar) plasma treatment to improve the surface hydrophilic and detection sensitivity. The results showed that the detection sensitivity of the Ar plasma-treated PVDF nanofiber membrane increased with increasing plasma treatment time without the need for a methanol pre-wet step. This suggests that the Ar plasma treated PVDF nanofiber membrane can be useful in Western blot with high sensitivity and without methanol pre-wet step.

We report a facile method to efficiently visualize the atomic carbon network of curved few-layered graphitic systems including folded bi-layer graphene, nanoribbon edges and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (straight and bent), via the processing of aberration-corrected high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (AC-HRTEM) images. This technique is also able to atomically resolve the structure of overlapping graphene layers with different orientations, thus enabling us to determine the stacking order of multiple graphene layers. To the best of our knowledge, we are the first to identify the stacking order of a misoriented 4-layer closed-edge graphene and a metal-semiconductor double-walled carbon nanotube junction.

The introduction of foreign atoms, such as nitrogen, into the hexagonal network of an sp(2)-hybridized carbon atom monolayer has been demonstrated and constitutes an effective tool for tailoring the intrinsic properties of graphene. Here, we report that boron atoms can be efficiently substituted for carbon in graphene. Single-layer graphene substitutionally doped with boron was prepared by the mechanical exfoliation of boron-doped graphite. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy demonstrated that the amount of substitutional boron in graphite was ~0.22 atom %. Raman spectroscopy demonstrated that the boron atoms were spaced 4.76 nm apart in single-layer graphene. The 7-fold higher intensity of the D-band when compared to the G-band was explained by the elastically scattered photoexcited electrons by boron atoms before emitting a phonon. The frequency of the G-band in single-layer substitutionally boron-doped graphene was unchanged, which could be explained by the p-type boron doping (stiffening) counteracting the tensile strain effect of the larger carbon-boron bond length (softening). Boron-doped graphene appears to be a useful tool for engineering the physical and chemical properties of graphene.

Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) promote calcification during hydroxyapatite (HA) formation by osteoblasts. Primary cultured osteoblasts are incubated with MWCNTs or carbon black. After culture for 3 weeks, the degree of calcification is very high in the 50 μg mL(-1) MWCNT group. Transmission electron microscopy shows needle-like crystals around the MWCNTs, and diffraction patterns reveal that the peak of the crystals almost coincides with the known peak of HA., (Copyright © 2012 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. We report a mechanically strong, electrically and thermally conductive, and optically transparent shape-memory polyurethane composite which was fabricated by introducing a small amount (0.1 wt%) of high-quality graphene as a filler. Geometrically large (≈4.6 μm(2)), but highly crystallized few-layer graphenes, verified by Raman spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy, were prepared by the sonication of expandable graphite in an organic solvent. Oxygen- containing functional groups at the edge plane of graphene were crucial for an effective stress transfer from the graphene to polyurethane. Homogeneously dispersed few-layered graphene enabled polyurethane to have a high shape recovery force of 1.8 MPa cm(-3). Graphene, which is intrinsically stretchable up to 10%, will enable high-performance composites to be fabricated at relatively low cost and we thus envisage that such composites may replace carbon nanotubes for various applications in the near future., (Copyright © 2012 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. We report a novel physicochemical route to produce highly crystalline nitrogen-doped graphene nanoribbons. The technique consists of an abrupt N(2) gas expansion within the hollow core of nitrogen-doped multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CN(x)-MWNTs) when exposed to a fast thermal shock. The multiwalled nanotube unzipping mechanism is rationalized using molecular dynamics and density functional theory simulations, which highlight the importance of open-ended nanotubes in promoting the efficient introduction of N(2) molecules by capillary action within tubes and surface defects, thus triggering an efficient and atomically smooth unzipping. The so-produced nanoribbons could be few-layered (from graphene bilayer onward) and could exhibit both crystalline zigzag and armchair edges. In contrast to methods developed previously, our technique presents various advantages: (1) the tubes are not heavily oxidized; (2) the method yields sharp atomic edges within the resulting nanoribbons; (3) the technique could be scaled up for the bulk production of crystalline nanoribbons from available MWNT sources; and (4) this route could eventually be used to unzip other types of carbon nanotubes or intercalated layered materials such as BN, MoS(2), WS(2), etc., (© 2012 American Chemical Society)

Supercapacitors can store and deliver energy by a simple charge separation, and thus they could be an attractive option to meet transient high energy density in operating fuel cells and in electric and hybrid electric vehicles. To achieve such requirements, intensive studies have been carried out to improve the volumetric capacitance in supercapacitors using various types and forms of carbons including carbon nanotubes and graphenes. However, conventional porous carbons are not suitable for use as electrode material in supercapacitors for such high energy density applications. Here, we show that edge-enriched porous carbons are the best electrode material for high energy density supercapacitors to be used in vehicles as an auxiliary powertrain. Molten potassium hydroxide penetrates well-aligned graphene layers vertically and consequently generates both suitable pores that are easily accessible to the electrolyte and a large fraction of electrochemically active edge sites. The coalescence process of fullerenes in the hollow core of single walled carbon nanotubes is systematically explored by the kinetic Monte Carlo method. Two elongation (or growth) modes via the coalescence (i) between an inner tube and fullerenes and (ii) between neighboring inner tubes are identified. It is found that the coalescence of two inner tubes mostly creates a very stable intra-tube junction which is composed of multiple pentagon-heptagon pairs. As a consequence, the study predicts that the inner tube of peapod derived double walled carbon nanotubes (DWNTs) must contain many intra-tube junctions. Careful high resolution transmission electron microscopy observation on peapod-grown DWNT sample provides experimental evidence of the presence of the junctions.
