Background/aim: Interferon-induced trans-membrane protein 1 (IFITM1) is known to be involved in breast cancer progression. We aimed to investigate its role in estrogen receptor (ER)-positive breast cancer cells with wild-type p53 and tamoxifen-resistant breast cancer cells., Materials and Methods: The ER-positive breast cancer cell lines, MCF-7 with wild-type p53 and T47D with mutant p53, were used. We established an MCF-7-derived tamoxifen-resistant cell line (TamR) by long-term culture of MCF-7 cells with 4-hydroxytamoxifen., Results: IFITM1 inhibition in MCF-7 cells significantly decreased cell growth and migration. MCF-7 cells with suppression of IFITM1 using siRNA or ruxolitinib showed reduced cell viability after tamoxifen treatment compared with that in the control MCF-7 cells. Unexpectedly, mRNA and protein levels of IFITM1 were decreased in TamR cells compared with those in MCF-7 cells. TamR cells with suppression of IFITM1 using siRNA or ruxolitinib showed no change in cell viability after treatment with tamoxifen. P53 knockdown using siRNA reduced the mRNA levels of IRF9 and increased mRNA and protein levels of SOCS3 in MCF-7 cells, suggesting that loss or mutation of p53 can affect the induction of IFITM1 via the JAK/STAT signaling pathway in breast cancer. Furthermore, MCF-7 cells with p53 knockdown using siRNA showed no decrease in cell viability after tamoxifen treatment or IFITM1 inhibition, indicating that p53 status may be important for cell death after tamoxifen treatment or IFITM1 inhibition., Conclusion: IFITM1 inhibition may enhance the sensitivity to tamoxifen based on p53-dependent enhancement of IFN signaling in wild-type p53, ER-positive breast cancer cells., (Copyright © 2024, International Institute of Anticancer Research (Dr. George J. Staphylococcus epidermidis , a common commensal bacterium found on human skin, can cause infections in clinical settings, and the presence of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) impedes the treatment of S. epidermidis infections. However, studies characterizing the ARGs in S. epidermidis with regard to genomic and ecological diversities are limited. Thus, we performed a comprehensive and comparative analysis of 405 high-quality S. epidermidis genomes, including those of 35 environmental isolates from the Han River, to investigate the genomic diversity of antibiotic resistance in this pathogen. Comparative genomic analysis revealed the prevalence of ARGs in S. epidermidis genomes associated with multi-locus sequence types. The genes encoding dihydrofolate reductase ( dfrC ) and multidrug efflux pump ( norA ) were genome-wide core ARGs. β-Lactam class ARGs were also highly prevalent in the S. epidermidis genomes, which was consistent with the resistance phenotype observed in river isolates. Furthermore, we identified chloramphenicol acetyltransferase genes ( cat ) in the plasmid-like sequences of the six river isolates, which have not been reported previously in S. epidermidis genomes. These genes were identical to those harbored by the Enterococcus faecium plasmids and associated with the insertion sequence 6 family transposases, homologous to those found in Staphylococcus aureu s plasmids, suggesting the possibility of horizontal gene transfer between these Gram-positive pathogens. Comparison of the ARG and virulence factor profiles between S. epidermidis and S. aureu s genomes revealed that these two species were clearly distinguished, suggesting genomic demarcation despite ecological overlap. Our findings provide a comprehensive understanding of the genomic diversity of antibiotic resistance in S. epidermidis ., Importance: A comprehensive understanding of the antibiotic resistance gene (ARG) profiles of the skin commensal bacterium and opportunistic pathogen Staphylococcus epidermidis needs to be documented from a genomic point of view. Our study encompasses a comparative analysis of entire S. epidermidis genomes from various habitats, including those of 35 environmental isolates from the Han River sequenced in this study. Our results shed light on the distribution and diversity of ARGs within different S. epidermidis multi-locus sequence types, providing valuable insights into the ecological and genetic factors associated with antibiotic resistance. Nonylphenol (NP) and octylphenol (OP), extensively used in industries, can disrupt the human endocrine system and cause significant ecological toxicity. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to reveal the occurrence and removal characteristics of NP and OP in 30 industrial wastewater treatment plants (IWWTPs). Specifically, this study focused on 13 NP isomers that have not been previously reported. Additionally, the potential environmental risk of NP and OP discharged from IWWTPs was assessed using a minimum dilution factor (MDF), proposed for the first time in this study. We showed that the concentration and proportion of the isomer NP11 were higher than those of the other isomers in the IWWTP influents and effluents. We also identified an activated sludge-activated carbon adsorption process suitable for removing NP and OP. Finally, we proposed the MDF value of 11 for the potential environmental risk assessment of NP and OP, revealing that OP poses a higher risk than NP when discharged into surface water. In recent years, many parts of the world have researched the transition to renewable energy, reducing energy consumption and moving away from fossil fuels. Among the studies to reduce energy consumption, passive radiative cooling can reduce the energy used for building cooling, and to improve this, the optical properties of atmospheric window emissivity and solar reflectance must be increased. In this study, hollow yttrium oxide (H-Y 2 O 3 ) was fabricated using melamine formaldehyde (MF) as a sacrificial template to improve the optical properties of passive radiative cooling. We then used finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations to predict the optical properties of the fabricated particles. This study compares the properties of MF@Y(OH)CO 3 and H-Y 2 O 3 particles derived from the same process. H-Y 2 O 3 was found to have a solar reflectance of 70.73% and an atmospheric window emissivity of 86.24%, and the field tests revealed that the temperature of MF@Y(OH)CO 3 was relatively low during the daytime. At night, the temperature of the H-Y 2 O 3 film was found to be 2.6 °C lower than the ambient temperature of 28.8 °C. The optical properties and actual cooling capabilities of the particles at each stage of manufacturing the hollow particles were confirmed and the cooling capabilities were quantified.

As crop productivity is greatly influenced by weather conditions, many attempts have been made to estimate crop yields using meteorological data and have achieved great progress with the development of machine learning. However, most yield prediction models are developed based on observational data, and the utilization of climate model output in yield prediction has been addressed in very few studies. In this study, we estimate rice yields in South Korea using the meteorological variables provided by ERA5 reanalysis data (ERA-O) and its dynamically downscaled data (ERA-DS). After ERA-O and ERA-DS are validated against observations (OBS), two different machine learning models, Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), are trained with different combinations of eight meteorological variables (mean temperature, maximum temperature, minimum temperature, precipitation, diurnal temperature range, solar irradiance, mean wind speed, and relative humidity) obtained from OBS, ERA-O, and ERA-DS at weekly and monthly timescales from May to September. Regardless of the model type and the source of the input data, training a model with weekly datasets leads to better yield estimates compared to monthly datasets. LSTM generally outperforms SVM, especially when the model is trained with ERA-DS data at a weekly timescale. The best yield estimates are produced by the LSTM model trained with all eight variables at a weekly timescale. Altogether this study shows the significance of high spatial and temporal resolution of input meteorological data in yield prediction, which can also serve to substantiate the added value of dynamical downscaling., (© 2023. Recent developments in genome sequencing have expanded the knowledge of genetic factors associated with late-onset Alzheimer's disease (AD). Among them, genetic variant ε4 of the APOE gene (APOE4) confers the greatest disease risk. Dysregulated glucose metabolism is an early pathological feature of AD. Using isogenic ApoE3 and ApoE4 astrocytes derived from human induced pluripotent stem cells, we find that ApoE4 increases glycolytic activity but impairs mitochondrial respiration in astrocytes. Ultrastructural and autophagy flux analyses show that ApoE4-induced cholesterol accumulation impairs lysosome-dependent removal of damaged mitochondria. Acute treatment with cholesterol-depleting agents restores autophagic activity, mitochondrial dynamics, and associated proteomes, and extended treatment rescues mitochondrial respiration in ApoE4 astrocytes. Two novel bacterial strains CJ74 T and CJ75 T belonging to the genus Flavobacterium were isolated from freshwater of Han River and ginseng soil, South Korea, respectively. Strain CJ74 T was Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, rod-shaped, non-motile, and non-flagellated, and did not produce flexirubin-type pigments. Strain CJ75 T was Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, rod-shaped, motile by gliding, and non-flagellated, and produced flexirubin-type pigments. Both strains were shown to grow optimally at 30 °C in the absence of NaCl on R2A medium. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strains CJ74 T and CJ75 T belonged to the genus Flavobacterium and were most closely related to Flavobacterium niveum TAPW14 T and Flavobacterium foetidum CJ42 T with 96.17% and 97.29% 16S rRNA sequence similarities, respectively. Genomic analyses including the reconstruction of phylogenomic tree, average nucleotide identity, and digital DNA-DNA hybridization suggested that they were novel species of the genus Flavobacterium. Both strains contained menaquinone 6 (MK-6) as the primary respiratory quinone and phosphatidylethanolamine as a major polar lipid. The predominant fatty acids of both strains were iso-C 15:0 and summed feature 3 (C 16:1 ω7c and/or C 16:1 ω6c). Based on the polyphasic taxonomic study, strains CJ74 T and CJ75 T represent novel species of the genus Flavobacterium, for which names Flavobacterium psychrotrophum sp. nov. and Flavobacterium panacagri sp. nov. are proposed, respectively. Silicon has garnered significant attention as a promising anode material for high-energy density Li-ion batteries. However, Si can be easily pulverized during cycling, which results in the loss of electrical contact and ultimately shortens battery lifetime. Therefore, the Si anode binder is developed to dissipate the enormous mechanical stress of the Si anode with enhanced mechanical properties. However, the interfacial stability between the Si anode binder and Cu current collector should also be improved. Here, a multifunctional thiourea polymer network (TUPN) is proposed as the Si anode binder. The TUPN binder provides the structural integrity of the Si anode with excellent tensile strength and resilience due to the epoxy-amine and silanol-epoxy covalent cross-linking, while exhibiting high extensibility from the random coil chains with the hydrogen bonds of thiourea, oligoether, and isocyanurate moieties. Furthermore, the robust TUPN binder enhances the interfacial stability between the Si anode and current collector by forming a physical interaction. Finally, the facilitated Li-ion transport and improved electrolyte wettability are realized due to the polar oligoether, thiourea, and isocyanurate moieties, respectively. The human epidermal growth factor receptor-2 (HER2) enriched subtype of breast cancer is associated with early recurrence, mostly within 5 years. However, anti-HER2 therapies have improved outcomes and their benefits persist in the long term. This study aimed to determine predictive factors for late survival in patients with HER2-positive breast cancer. We analyzed 20,672 patients with HER2-positive stage I-III breast cancer. The patients were divided into two groups based on a follow-up period of 60 months. The multivariate analysis of factors associated with poor overall survival included old age, advanced pathologic tumor size stage (pT), advanced pathologic regional lymph node stage (pN), high histological grade, presence of lymphatic and vascular invasion, and HR-negative status within 60 months. In the breast cancer-specific survival (BCSS) of the > 60 months follow-up group, the hazard ratios (HRa) based on pN-negative were 3.038, 3.722, and 4.877 in pN1 (p = 0.001), pN2 (p < 0.001), and pN3 (p < 0.001), respectively. Only pT4 level was statistically significant in the pT group (HRa, 4.528; p = 0.007). Age (HRa, 1.045, p < 0.001) and hormone receptor-positive status (HRa, 1.705, p = 0.022) were also associated to worse BCSS. Although lymphatic invasion was not significantly associated with BCSS, there was a tendency toward a relationship (p = 0.079) with worse BCSS. In HER2-positive breast cancer patients, node status had a more significant relationship with long-term prognosis than T stage. Background: Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is a common adverse effect of taxane treatment and can significantly affect patient quality of life. Currently, there are no effective treatments to alleviate symptoms of CIPN; thus, starting with prevention steps in high-risk patients is considered advantageous. However, for these prevention steps to be applicable to all patients, their side effects or accompanying discomforts should be minimal, and the intervention cost-effective. Compression therapy can be considered a prevention intervention, and using surgical gloves is feasible and cost-effective (approximately $0.6 per pair). Although previous studies on compression therapy using surgical gloves have reported decreased incidence of PN, these studies were non-randomized, limited to nab-paclitaxel treatment, and involved the use of small gloves, which may have caused discomfort. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the preventive effects of compression therapy using normal-sized surgical gloves on CIPN in patients treated with paclitaxel., Methods: This clinical trial is designed to evaluate the preventive effects of compression therapy using surgical gloves on CIPN in women with stage II-III breast cancer who received paclitaxel chemotherapy for at least 12 weeks. This multicenter, randomized-controlled, open-label study will be conducted in six academic hospitals. Patients with medication or a medical history related to neuropathy or hand disease will be excluded. The primary outcome will be the preventive effect of compression therapy using surgical gloves, measured based on changes in the neurotoxicity component of the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Taxane questionnaire. Furthermore, we will assess the National Cancer Institute's Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events grade of CIPN after 6 months. Notably, the estimated sample size, based on a p-value < 0.025 and statistical power of 0.9, will consist of 104 patients (52 per group), accounting for a 10% sample loss., Discussion: This intervention can be easily implemented in clinical practice and may serve as a preventive strategy for CIPNs with strong patient adherence. G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) regulate diverse intracellular signaling pathways through the activation of heterotrimeric G proteins. However, the effects of the sequential activation-deactivation cycle of G protein on the conformational changes of GPCRs remains unknown. By developing a Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) tool for human M3 muscarinic receptor (hM3R), we find that a single-receptor FRET probe can display the consecutive structural conversion of a receptor by G protein cycle. Our results reveal that the G protein activation evokes a two-step change in the hM3R structure, including the fast step mediated by G q protein binding and the subsequent slower step mediated by the physical separation of the Gα q and Gβγ subunits. We also find that the separated Gα q -GTP forms a stable complex with the ligand-activated hM3R and phospholipase Cβ. Linear nevus sebaceous syndrome (LNSS) is a neurocutaneous disorder caused by somatic gain-of-function mutations in KRAS or HRAS. LNSS brains have neurodevelopmental defects, including cerebral defects and epilepsy; however, its pathological mechanism and potentials for treatment are largely unclear. We show that introduction of KRAS G12V in the developing mouse cortex results in subcortical nodular heterotopia and enhanced excitability, recapitulating major pathological manifestations of LNSS. Moreover, we show that decreased firing frequency of inhibitory neurons without KRAS G12V expression leads to disrupted excitation and inhibition balance. Transcriptional profiling after destabilization domain-mediated clearance of KRAS G12V in human neural progenitors and differentiating neurons identifies reversible functional networks underlying LNSS. Neurons expressing KRAS G12V show molecular changes associated with delayed neuronal maturation, most of which are restored by KRAS G12V clearance. Two novel bacterial species CJ51 T and CJ63 T belonging to the genus Chryseobacterium were isolated from the Upo wetland and the Han River, South Korea, respectively. Cells of these strains were Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, non-motile, rod-shaped, and catalase- and oxidase-positive. Both strains were shown to grow optimally at 30 °C and pH 7 in the absence of NaCl on tryptic soy agar. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strains CJ51 T and CJ63 T belonged to the genus Chryseobacterium and were most closely related to Chryseobacterium piperi CTM T and Chryseobacterium piscicola VQ-6316s T with 98.47% and 98.46% 16S rRNA sequence similarities, respectively. The average nucleotide identity values of strains CJ51 T and CJ63 T with its closely related type strains Chryseobacterium piperi CTM T and Chryseobacterium piscicola VQ-6316s T were 81.9% and 82.1%, respectively. The major fatty acids of strains CJ51 T and CJ63 T were iso-C 15:0 , iso-C 17:0 3-OH and summed feature 9 (C 16:0 10-methyl and/or iso-C 17:1 ω9c). Menaquinone 6 (MK-6) was identified as the primary respiratory quinone in both strains. The major polar lipids of strains CJ51 T and CJ63 T were phosphatidylethanolamine and several unidentified amino lipids and lipids. Based on polyphasic taxonomy data, strains CJ51 T and CJ63 T represent novel species of the genus Chryseobacterium, for which names Chryseobacterium paludis sp. nov. and Chryseobacterium foetidum sp. nov. are proposed respectively. Current research has focused on effective solutions to mitigate global warming and the accelerating greenhouse gas emissions. Compared to most cooling methods requiring energy and resources, passive daytime radiative cooling (PDRC) technology offers excellent energy savings as it requires no energy consumption. However, existing PDRC materials encounter unprecedented problems such as complex structures, low flexibility, and performance degradation after stretching. Thus, this study reports a porous structured thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) film with bimodal pores to produce high-efficiency PDRC with efficient solar scattering using a simple process. The TPU film exhibited an adequately high solar reflectivity of 0.93 and an emissivity of 0.90 in the atmospheric window to achieve an ambient cooling of 5.6 °C at midday under a solar intensity of 800 W m -2 . Thus, the highly elastic and flexible TPU film was extremely suitable for application on objects with complex shapes. The radiative cooling performance of 3D-printed models covered with these TPU films demonstrated their superior indoor cooling efficiency compared to commercial white paint (8.76 °C). This study investigates the occurrence of 36 pesticides-including 33 that were monitored from 2007 to 2019 in Korean rivers-in wastewaters from pesticide manufacturing facilities (PMFs) and in 13 pesticide wastewater treatment plants (PWWTPs). Furthermore, an approach for the effective removal of these pesticides from pesticide wastewater (PW) is proposed. Among the 36 pesticides investigated, 32 were found to be present in the PMF wastewater and PWWTP influents (at concentrations ≤466.8 mg/L). In addition, 24 of the 36 pesticides were detected in PWWTP effluents, indicating that effluents are discharged without the complete removal of many pesticides. Moreover, the PWWTP effluent influences the presence of pesticides in river (confidence interval: ≥ 95%; p < 0.05). Although the chemical oxidation-activated sludge process is frequently recommended for the treatment of PWs, the findings from the current study indicate that an activated sludge-activated carbon adsorption process is more suitable for PW treatment due to its superior removal efficiency, treatment stability, and economic feasibility. Background: The increasing prevalence of resistance against the last-resort antibiotic colistin is a significant threat to global public health. Here, we discovered a novel colistin resistance mechanism via enzymatic inactivation of the drug and proposed its clinical importance in microbial communities during polymicrobial infections., Results: A bacterial strain of the Gram-negative opportunistic pathogen Stenotrophomonas maltophilia capable of degrading colistin and exhibiting a high-level colistin resistance was isolated from the soil environment. A colistin-degrading protease (Cdp) was identified in this strain, and its contribution to colistin resistance was demonstrated by growth inhibition experiments using knock-out (Δcdp) and complemented (Δcdp::cdp) mutants. Coculture and coinfection experiments revealed that S. maltophilia carrying the cdp gene could inactivate colistin and protect otherwise susceptible Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which may seriously affect the clinical efficacy of the drug for the treatment of cystic fibrosis patients with polymicrobial infection., Conclusions: Our results suggest that Cdp should be recognized as a colistin resistance determinant that confers collective resistance at the microbial community level. Our study will provide vital information for successful clinical outcomes during the treatment of complex polymicrobial infections, particularly including S. maltophilia and other colistin-susceptible Gram-negative pathogens such as P. aeruginosa. Severe patients visited regional emergency centers more frequently during the COVID-19 period, and disposition status warranting admission to the intensive care unit or resulting in death was more common during the COVID-19 period. This study was conducted to compare the characteristics and severity of patients, and emergency department length of stay before and after the COVID-19 outbreak. Subjects were 75,409 patients who visited the regional emergency medical center from 1 February 2019 to 19 January 2020 and from 1 February 2020 to 19 January 2021. Data was analyzed using the SPSS/WIN 22.0 program. The significance level was p < 0.05. The chi-square test and t-test were used for variables, and Cramer V was used for correlation. We found that the total number of patients visiting the emergency room decreased by 37.6% after COVID-19, but emergency department length of stay among severely ill patients increased by 203.7%. Additionally, the utilization rate of 119 ambulances and relatively more severe patients increased by 9.0% and by 2.1%. More studies about emergency department designs and operational programs should be conducted for better action not only during regular periods but also during periods of pandemic.

We aimed to compare gene expression in primary tumors of patients with recurrence and nonrecurrence to gain insight into the biology of high-risk HER2-positive early breast cancer. Patients who underwent curative resection and received adjuvant trastuzumab for HER2-positive early breast cancer were evaluated. Gene expression analyses were performed using NanoString Technologies’ nCounter Breast Cancer 360 Panel. PAM50 intrinsic subtypes and Breast Cancer Signatures including tumor inflammation signature (TIS) were evaluated. Of 247 patients, 28 (11.3%) had recurrence at a median follow-up of 54.2 months. Patients with pathological stage III, tumor size > 5 cm, axillary lymph node metastases, and hormone receptor-negativity were more frequently observed in the recurrent group compared with the nonrecurrent group. In patients with recurrence, seven genes were upregulated significantly, including WNT11, HAPLN1, FGF10, BBOX1, CXADR, NDP, and EREG, and two genes were downregulated, including CXCL9 and GNLY. TIS score was significantly lower in patients with recurrence compared with controls without recurrence. These findings suggest that activation of oncogenic signaling pathways related to cell proliferation, adhesion, cancer stemness, and noninflamed tumor microenvironment are associated with the risk of recurrence in early stage, HER2-positive breast cancer.

Structural colors have advantages compared with chemical pigments or dyes, such as iridescence, tunability, and unfading. Many studies have focused on developing the ability to switch ON/OFF the structural color; however, they often suffer from a simple and single stimulus, remaining structural colors, and target selectivity. Herein, we present regionally controlled multistimuli-responsive structural color switching surfaces. The key part is the utilization of a micropatterned DNA-hydrogel assembly on a single substrate. Each hydrogel network contains a unique type of stimuli-responsive DNA motifs as an additional cross-linker to exhibit swelling/deswelling via stimuli-responsive DNA interactions. The approach enables overcoming the existing limitations and selectively programming the DNA-hydrogel to a decrypted state (ON) and an encrypted state (OFF) in response to multiple stimuli. Furthermore, the transitions are reversible, providing cyclability. We envision the potential of our method for diverse applications, such as sensors or anticounterfeiting, requiring multistimuli-responsive structural color switching surfaces.

The presence of extrathyroidal extension (ETE) is associated with locoregional recurrence and distant metastases in papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). This study was designed to compare the recurrence risk between minimal ETE (mETE) and gross ETE (gETE) in patients with PTC using propensity score matching. In this study, 4452 patients with PTC who underwent thyroid surgery in a single center were retrospectively analyzed, and clinicopathological characteristics were compared according to the ETE status. Disease-free survival (DFS) and recurrence risk were compared between mETE and gETE after propensity score matching. The mean follow-up duration was 122.7 ± 22.5 months. In multivariate analysis, both mETE and gETE were not associated with recurrence risk before propensity score matching ( p = 0.154 and p = 0.072, respectively). After propensity score matching, no significant difference in recurrence rates was observed between the two groups ( p = 0.668). DFS of the gETE group did not significantly differ from that of the mETE group (log-rank p = 0.531). This study revealed that both mETE and gETE are not independent risk factors for the risk of recurrence in PTC. Our findings suggest that gETE invading strap muscles only might not be associated with worse oncological outcomes in PTC.

Background: There is an increasing interest in HER2-low breast cancer with promising data from clinical trials using novel anti-HER2 antibody-drug conjugates. We explored the differences in clinicopathological characteristics and survival outcomes between HER2-low and HER2-IHC 0 breast cancer., Methods: Using nationwide data from the Korean Breast Cancer Registry between 2006 and 2011, 30,491 patients with stages I to III breast cancer were included in the analysis: 9,506 (31.2%) in the HER2-low group and 20,985 (68.8%) in the HER2-IHC 0 group. Kaplan-Meier and Cox proportional hazards regression survival analysis were used to compare breast cancer-specific survival between the two groups., Results: HER2-low breast cancer was more frequent in patients with hormone receptor-positive breast cancer than in those with triple-negative breast cancer. In patients with hormone receptor-positive breast cancer, HER2-low breast cancer was associated with fewer T4 tumors, higher histological grade, and a negative lymphatic invasion. In patients with triple-negative breast cancer, HER2-low breast cancer was associated with a high lymph node ratio and positive lymphatic invasion. HER2-low breast cancer was significantly associated with a lower Ki-67 labeling index. No significant difference was observed in overall survival between the two groups. HER2-low breast cancer showed significantly better breast cancer-specific survival than HER2-IHC 0 breast cancer, regardless of the hormone receptor status. In multivariate analysis, the impact of low HER2 expression on breast cancer-specific survival was significant only in triple-negative breast cancer (HRs, 0.68; 95% CI, 0.49-0.93; P = 0.019)., Conclusions: These findings suggest that the biology and clinical impact of low HER2 expression can differ according to the hormone receptor status and support the need for further investigation on the understanding of the biology of HER2-low breast cancer., (© 2022. Stretchable electronic circuits are critical in a variety of next-generation electronics applications, including soft robots, wearable technologies, and biomedical applications. To date, printable composite conductors comprising various types of conductive fillers have been suggested to achieve high electrical conductance and excellent stretchability. Among them, liquid metal particles have been considered as a viable candidate filler that can meet the necessary prerequisites. However, a mechanical activation process is needed to generate interconnected liquid channels inside elastomeric polymers. In this study, we have developed a chemical strategy of surface-functionalizing liquid metal particles to eliminate the necessity of additional mechanical activation processes. We found that the characteristic conformations of the polyvinylpyrrolidone surrounding eutectic gallium indium particles are highly dependent on the molecular weight of polyvinylpyrrolidone. By virtue of the specific chemical roles of polyvinylpyrrolidone, the as-printed composite layers are highly conductive and stretchable, exhibiting an electrical conductivity approaching 8372 S/cm at 100% strain and an invariant resistance change of 0.92 even at 75% strain after a 60,000 cycle test. The results demonstrate that the self-activated liquid metal-based composite conductors are applicable to traditional stretchable electronics, healable stretchable electronics, and shape-morphable applications.

A Gram-stain-negative, aerobic and motile bacterial strain, designated CJ34 T , was isolated from Han River water in the Republic of Korea. Strain CJ34 T grew optimally on tryptic soy agar at 30 °C and pH 7.0 in the absence of NaCl. Results of phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequence showed that strain CJ34 T belonged to the genus Comamonas within the family Comamonadaceae and was most closely related to Comamonas testosteroni ATCC 11996 T and Comamonas thiooxydans DSM 17888 T (both 98.63 % similarity). The average nucleotide identity values between strain CJ34 T and two closely related type strains C. testosteroni ATCC 11996 T and C. thiooxydans DSM 17888 T were 82.77 and 82.73 %, respectively. The major isoprenoid quinone of strain CJ34 T was ubiquinone Q-8. The major cellular fatty acids of strain CJ34 T were C 16 : 0 , C 16 : 1  ω 6 c and/or C 16 : 1  ω 7c and C 18 : 1  ω 6 c and/or C 18 : 1  ω 7 c . The predominant polar lipids of strain CJ34 T were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol and an unidentified aminophospholipid. Whole genome sequencing revealed that strain CJ34 T had a genome of 4.9 Mbp and the G+C content of the genomic DNA was 59.73 mol%. On the basis of the results of this polyphasic taxonomy study, strain CJ34 T represents a novel species in the genus Comamonas , for which the name Comamonas fluminis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is CJ34 T (=KACC 22237 T =JCM 34454 T ).

A novel bacterial strain designated CJ43 T was isolated from fresh water located in Gangwon-do, South Korea, displaying multi-drug resistance. The isolate was Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, orange-pigmented, and rod-shaped. Strain CJ43 T grew optimally at 30 °C and pH 7 on R2A agar in the absence of NaCl. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain CJ43 T belonged to the genus Pedobacter in the family Sphingobacteriaceae and was most closely related to Pedobacter puniceum HX-22-1  T and P. glucosidilyticus 1-2  T (98.3 and 98.1% sequence similarity). The genome size of strain CJ43 T was 3.9 Mb in a single contig with DNA G + C content of 34.9%. The genome included 3144 predicted protein-coding genes, as well as 55 tRNA, 9 rRNA and 3 ncRNA genes. The genome also contained 128 putative antibiotic resistance genes, reflecting its phenotypes. The average nucleotide identity values between strain CJ43 T and two closely related strains P. puniceum HX-22-1  T and P. glucosidilyticus 1-2  T were 91.0 and 88.7%, respectively. In silico digital DNA-DNA hybridization results between strain CJ43 T and the related strains were 42.8 and 38.6%, respectively. The major fatty acids of strain CJ43 T were iso-C 15:0 , iso-C 17:0 3-OH, and summed feature 3 (C 16:1 ω6c and/or C 16:1 ω7c). Strain CJ43 T contained phosphatidylethanolamine as the major polar lipid and menaquinone-7 as the sole respiratory quinone. Based on the polyphasic taxonomy data, strain CJ43 T represents a novel species of the genus Pedobacter, for which the name Pedobacter aquae sp. nov. is proposed with the type strain CJ43 T (= KACC 21350  T  = JCM 33709  T )., (© 2022. The current 5-day biochemical oxygen demand (BOD 5 ) test methods lack detailed information on sample dilution, which typically leads to an incorrect dilution ratio of samples and failed BOD 5 testing. This study proposed an improved dilution technique that effectively determines the dilution ratios for raw wastewater and wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) effluent. The numbers of raw wastewater and WWTPs effluent samples used in the BOD 5 tests were 201 and 61, respectively. The experimental results demonstrated that both the raw wastewater and WWTPs effluent varied in BOD 5 values with the sample dilution ratio, and these changes were more noticeable when the dissolved oxygen consumption ratio (DOCR) was less than 20% or when the dilution ratio was large. Assuming that the BOD 5 value over the DOCR range of 40%-70% was true, the optimal DOCR range was 40%-90% for the raw wastewater and 40%-70% and 80%-90% for the WWTPs effluent, where the relative error of BOD 5 values in these DOCR ranges was less than 10% depending on the dilution ratio. The correlation between the sample dilution ratio and the BOD 5 value over the optimal DOCR range was considerably higher than that over the entire DOCR range. This was combined with the correlation equation between BOD 5 and chemical oxygen demand to propose an equation that could determine more accurate sample dilution ratios for raw wastewater and WWTPs effluent compared to the conventional sample dilution methods for the BOD 5 test., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Ltd. Vitrimers have shown advantages over conventional thermosets via capabilities of dynamic network rearrangement to endow repairability as well as recyclability. Based on such characteristics, vitrimers have been studied and have shown promises as a 3D printing ink material that can be recycled with the purpose of waste reduction. However, despite the brilliant approaches, there still remain limitations regarding requirement of new reagents for recycling the materials or reprintability issues. Here, a new class of a 4D printable vitrimer that is translated from a commercial poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) resin is reported to exhibit self-healability, weldability, reprocessability, as well as reprintability. Thus, formed 3D-printed vitrimer products show superior heat resistance in comparison to commercial PCL prints, and can be repeatedly reprocessed or reprinted via filament extrusion and a handheld fused deposition modeling (FDM)-based 3D printing method. Furthermore, incorporation of semicrystalline PCL renders capabilities of shape memory for 4D printing applications, and as far as it is known, such demonstration of FDM 3D-printed shape memory vitrimers has not been realized yet. Purpose: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has significantly impacted the rates of screening, case identification, and referral for cancer diagnosis. We investigated the diagnosis and surgery status of breast cancer before and after the COVID-19 pandemic at a multi-institutional level., Methods: We collected breast cancer data from the clinical data warehouse which contained the medical records of patients from six academic institutions in South Korea. Patients were divided into two groups: February to April (period A) and May to July (period B). The data from the two groups were then compared against the same periods in 2019 and 2020. The primary objective was to investigate the differences in breast cancer stages before and after the COVID-19 pandemic., Results: Among 3,038 patients, there was a 9.9% reduction in the number of diagnoses in 2020. This decrease was more significant during period A than period B. The breast cancer stage was not statistically different in period A ( p = 0.115), but it was in period B ( p = 0.001). Depression is accompanied by neuronal atrophy and decreased neuroplasticity. Leucine-rich glioma-inactivated protein 1 (LGI1), a metastasis suppressor, plays an important role in the development of CNS synapses. We found that LGI1 expression was reduced in the hippocampi of mice that underwent chronic unpredictable stress (CUS), and could be rescued by the antidepressant, fluoxetine. Recombinant soluble neuritin, an endogenous protein previously implicated in antidepressant-like behaviors, elevated hippocampal LGI1 expression in a manner dependent on histone deacetylase 5 (HDAC5) phosphorylation. Accordingly, Nrn1 flox/flox ;Pomc-cre ( Nrn1 cOE) mice, which conditionally overexpress neuritin, displayed increases in hippocampal LGI1 level under CUS and exhibited resilience to CUS that were blocked by hippocampal depletion of LGI1. Interestingly, neuritin-mediated LGI1 expression was inhibited by HNMPA-(AM) 3 , an insulin receptor inhibitor, as was neuritin-mediated HDAC5 phosphorylation. A Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, short rod-shaped, pale yellow-pigmented, non-motile and gentamycin-resistant bacterial strain designated CJ210 T was isolated from the Han River, Republic of Korea. Strain CJ210 T grew optimally at 30 °C and pH 7.0 in the absence of NaCl on tryptic soy agar. Flexirubin-type pigments were not produced. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity showed that strain CJ210 T belonged to the genus Myroides within the family Flavobacteriaceae and was most closely related to Myroides odoratus KACC 14347 T (98.1 % similarity), followed by M. injenensis KCTC 23367 T (95.3 % similarity). The average nucleotide identity values between strain CJ210 T and two closely related type strains M. odoratus KACC 14347 T and M. injenensis KCTC 23367 T were 83.7 and 73.8 %, respectively. The digital DNA-DNA hybridization results between strain CJ210 T and the related type strains were 27.5 and 20.2 %, respectively. Strain CJ210 T contained menaquinone 6 (MK-6) as the predominant menaquinone. The predominant polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, two unidentified aminolipids and two unidentified lipids. The major fatty acids of strain CJ210 T were iso-C 15 : 0 , iso-C 17 : 0 3-OH and summed feature 9 (comprising iso-C 17 : 1  ω 9 c and/or C 16 : 0 10-methyl). Whole genome sequencing revealed that strain CJ210 T had a genome of 3.8 Mbp with 36.5 % DNA G+C content. The genome contained several antimicrobial resistance genes including an aminoglycoside-resistant gene. On the basis of the polyphasic taxonomic study, strain CJ210 T represents a novel species in the genus Myroides , for which name Myrodies fluvii sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is CJ210 T (=KACC 19954 T =JCM 33306 T ).

Purpose: The prognosis of patients with node-negative T1b tumors according to human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) status is not known. This group of patients has not been studied in the available randomized trials. The objective of this study was to evaluate the survival of patients in a monoethnic group diagnosed with T1b lymph node-negative breast cancer depending on HER2 status., Methods: We analyzed 3110 patients with T1bN0M0 breast cancer whose data were deposited into the Korean Breast Cancer Society Registry database between 2000 and 2009. Overall survival (OS) and breast cancer-specific survival (BCSS) were compared according to HER2 status., Results: Among all patients, 494 (15.9%) had HER2-positive breast cancer. At a mean follow-up of 93 months, 108 deaths and 86 breast cancer-specific deaths were noted among all patients. There was no significant difference in OS between the HER2-negative and HER2-positive groups (p = 0.103). The same result was observed for BCSS. However, in the subgroup of estrogen receptor (ER)-positive women, HER2-negative patients had a better BCSS prognosis than HER2-positive patients (p = 0.025). Multivariate analysis also indicated a significant difference in BCSS in the ER-positive subgroup (HR 2.60; 95% CI 1.15-5.87; p = 0.021)., Conclusion: This study analyzed a large nationwide and monoethnic cohort and found a significant difference only in BCSS in the ER-positive subgroup according to HER2 status. Anti-HER2 therapy may be considered in HER2-positive and ER-positive patients with small, node-negative breast cancer.

The three-dimensional field-in-field (3-D FIF) technique for radiotherapy is an advanced, state-of-the-art method that uses multileaf collimators to generate a homogeneous and conformal dose distribution via segmental subfields. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the dosimetric reproducibility of 3-D FIF plans using the original simulation computed tomography (iCT) scans and re-simulation CT (rCT) scans for whole breast irradiation (WBI) schedule. This study enrolled a total of 34 patients. The study population underwent iCT scans for standard WBI and took rCT scans after 45 Gy of WBI for cone down boost plans. The dosimetric parameters (V 105% , V 103% , V 100% , V 98% , V 95% , V 90% , V 50% ), plan quality indices (conformity index, homogeneity index) and clinical parameters (isocenter-breast axis, isocenter-lung axis, soft tissue volumes within radiation field, lung volumes within radiation field) were assessed. The median time interval from surgery to iCT was 33 days and from iCT to rCT was 35 days. All dosimetric parameters exhibited statistically significant differences between iCT and rCT among cohorts with a surgery-iCT interval of < 60 days. Homogeneity index showed a statistically significant increase from iCT to rCT among all cohorts. Soft tissue volumes (p = 0.001) and isocenter-breast axis (p = 0.032) exhibited statistically significant differences among cohorts with surgery-iCT interval < 60 days. Regarding the reproducibility of the 3-D FIF WBI plans, significant changes were observed in dosimetric and clinical factors, particularly in study cohorts with a surgery-simulation interval < 60 days. The main contributing factor of these transitions seemed to be the changes in volume of the soft tissue within the WBI field. Further confirmative studies are necessary to determine the most suitable timing and technique for WBI.

Zoonotic avian influenza viruses pose severe health threats to humans. Of several viral subtypes reported, the low pathogenic avian influenza H7N9 virus has since February 2013 caused more than 1,500 cases of human infection with an almost 40% case-fatality rate. Vaccination of poultry appears to reduce human infections. However, the emergence of highly pathogenic strains has increased concerns about H7N9 pandemics. To develop an efficacious H7N9 human vaccine, we designed vaccine viruses by changing the patterns of N-linked glycosylation (NLG) on the viral hemagglutinin (HA) protein based on evolutionary patterns of H7 HA NLG changes. Notably, a virus in which 2 NLG modifications were added to HA showed higher growth rates in cell culture and elicited more cross-reactive antibodies than did other vaccine viruses with no change in the viral antigenicity. Developed into an inactivated vaccine formulation, the vaccine virus with 2 HA NLG additions exhibited much better protective efficacy against lethal viral challenge in mice than did a vaccine candidate with wild-type (WT) HA by reducing viral replication in the lungs. In a ferret model, the 2 NLG-added vaccine viruses also induced hemagglutination-inhibiting antibodies and significantly suppressed viral replication in the upper and lower respiratory tracts compared with the WT HA vaccines. In a mode of action study, the HA NLG modification appeared to increase HA protein contents incorporated into viral particles, which would be successfully translated to improve vaccine efficacy. Background/aims: We evaluated the efficacy of docetaxel and epirubicin as neoadjuvant chemotherapy in locally advanced breast cancer and assessed the predictive factors for response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy and prognostic factors related to relapse-free survival., Methods: Forty patients who received docetaxel and epirubicinas neoadjuvant chemotherapy for locally advanced breast cancer were evaluated retrospectively. Neoadjuvant chemotherapy consisted of intravenous injection of 75 mg/m2 docetaxel and 60 mg/m2 epirubucin on day 1, every 21 days, and two to six cycles., Results: Twenty-five (62.5%) patients showed a partial response, and 15 (37.5%) patients showed a stable disease in the first response evaluation after two or three cycles of neoadjuvant chemotherapy. In the second response evaluation of nine patients who received six cycles of neoadjuvant chemotherapy, one patient achieved a complete response, but two patients with hormone receptor-negative, human epidermal growth factor receptor 2-positive breast cancer experienced disease progression. Twenty-five (62.5%) patients experienced downstaging after neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Patients with > 20% pretreatment Ki-67 and decrease of Ki-67 between pre- and post-neoadjuvant chemotherapy showed a trend for better response. In multivariate analysis, advanced pathological stage showed a significant negative effect on relapse-free survival., Conclusion: Docetaxel and epirubicin neoadjuvant chemotherapy showed a good response in locally advanced breast cancer. Pretreatment Ki-67 and change of Ki-67 may play a role as predictive factor for response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy.

To assess distribution of metal contamination and grain size in the sediments of Nakdong River (South Korea), surface sediments were collected from 21 sites and analyzed. Within the study area, sand was typically the dominant grain size. However, because of the reduced flow rate and flow velocity, sites adjacent to weirs were composed of relatively fine sediments. A comparison of sediment metal concentrations with sediment quality guidelines proposed by the USA, Canada, and South Korea revealed that sites adjacent to weirs had concentrations that exceeded the standard values. The enrichment factor, index of geo-accumulation, and pollution load index calculation results that the sites adjacent to weirs showed high contamination, with Cd accounting for the highest contamination levels. The metals in the study area varies due to the effect of fine sediments; therefore, high concentrations of metals accumulated adjacent to weirs where fine sediments were distributed in greater proportions. Furthermore, Cd exhibited the greatest contribution to metal contamination in the study area and the highest contamination levels were found at NS19 (adjacent to the Haman weir). Thus, the accumulation of fine sediment increased due to the influence of the weirs, thereby increasing the overall amount of metal contamination.

This study aimed to select rivers of priority management through the assessment of heavy metal pollution of sediments. We investigated the distribution characteristics of heavy metals in surface sediments of the Nakdong River in South Korea and used various pollution indices to assess pollution risk and identify factors influencing pollution. The kriging method was used to determine heavy metal distribution. The pollution load index, potential ecological risk index, mean PEL quotient, and the Canada Council of Ministers of the Environment sediment quality index were used as sediment pollution assessment methods. The toxicity evaluation was performed on sites that appeared to be contaminated, by applying existing methods for assessing sediment pollution level and the national standards for evaluating the pollution level. The toxicity test was performed on Hyalella azteca, and a methodology for assessing sediment pollution level was proposed. Ecotoxicity was assessed at seven sites that were found to have heavy metal contaminants. The results showed that sites N1, N8, T28, and T29 were not toxic, while T8, T19, and T21 were. Thus, this study shows that high heavy metal pollution does not necessarily lead to a toxic environment. To assess sediment pollution, an additional assessment of toxicity should be made, along with assessments of existing sediment pollution. Our results demonstrate that streams showing high sediment pollution levels should be granted priority in management. The efforts should particularly focus on Cu at T8, Cr at T19, and Hg at T21.

Clozapine is thought to induce obsessive compulsive symptoms (OCS) in schizophrenic patients. However, because OCS are often comorbid with schizophrenia regardless of clozapine treatment, it remains unclear whether clozapine can generate OCS de novo. Thus, it has been difficult to establish a causal link between clozapine and OCS in human studies. To address this question, we asked whether chronic treatment with clozapine can induce obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD)-like behavior in mice. We injected mice with long-term continuous release pellets embedded with clozapine four times at 60-day intervals and then monitored the mice for signs of OCD-like behavior up to 40 wk. of age. We found clozapine increases grooming behavior as early as 30 wk. of age. We also investigated the effect clozapine on grooming behavior in Sapap3 knockout (KO) mice, which are a well-known animal model of OCD. In Sapap3 heterozygous KO mice, clozapine increases grooming behavior much earlier than in wild-type mice, suggesting a clozapine-OCD gene interaction. Fluoxetine, which is often used in the treatment of OCS and OCD, reduced the grooming behavior induced by clozapine. These data demonstrate that chronic clozapine treatment can generate OCD-like behavior in mice and support the hypothesis that clozapine produces de novo OCS regardless of schizophrenia status.

Thermadapt shape memory polymers (SMPs), utilizing a variety of dynamic covalent bond exchange mechanisms, have been extensively studied in recent years but it is still challenging to address several constraints in terms of limited accuracy and complexity for constructing 3D shape memory structures. Here, an effective and facile preparation of thermadapt SMPs based on elemental sulfur-derived poly(phenylene polysulfide) networks (PSNs) is presented. These SMPs possess intrinsic near-infrared (NIR)-induced photothermal conversion properties for spatiotemporal control of their plasticity and elasticity. Background: We aimed to evaluate the expression of APOBEC3A (A3A), 3B (A3B) mRNA, and germline APOBEC3A/B deletion polymorphism in patients with breast cancers and to investigate the correlation between their expressions and clinicopathological characteristics., Methods: RNA and DNA samples were extracted from 138 breast cancer tissues and adjacent normal breast tissues. The levels of A3A and A3B mRNA transcripts were determined using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction. Insertion and deletion PCR assays were performed to detect the A3B deletion allele. The serum concentrations of soluble programmed death-ligand 1 (sPD-L1) and interferon gamma were determined using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays., Results: A3B mRNA expression levels were significantly higher in triple-negative breast cancers compared to hormone receptor-positive, human epidermal growth factor receptor 2-negative breast cancers. Older age of the patient and high ki-67 expression were associated with increased expression levels of A3A and A3B mRNA. Advanced tumor stage, presence of lymph node involvement, and high histological grade were associated with increased expression levels of A3A mRNA. The APOBEC3A/B deletion allele was found in 77 (55.8%) patients. TP53 and PIK3CA mutations were detected in 62 (44.9%) and 31 (22.5%) patients, respectively. The presence of a PIK3CA mutation was associated with lower A3A mRNA expression levels. There was a weak positive relationship between A3A mRNA expression levels and serum sPD-L1 levels., Conclusions: There was a difference in A3B mRNA expression levels according to breast cancer subtypes, and high levels of A3A and A3B mRNA expressions were associated with an aggressive phenotype. There was a high incidence of APOBEC3A/B deletion allele. Background: The impact of human activities on the environmental resistome has been documented in many studies, but there remains the controversial question of whether the increased antibiotic resistance observed in anthropogenically impacted environments is just a result of contamination by resistant fecal microbes or is mediated by indigenous environmental organisms. Here, to determine exactly how anthropogenic influences shape the environmental resistome, we resolved the microbiome, resistome, and mobilome of the planktonic microbial communities along a single river, the Han, which spans a gradient of human activities., Results: The bloom of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) was evident in the downstream regions and distinct successional dynamics of the river resistome occurred across the spatial continuum. We identified a number of widespread ARG sequences shared between the river, human gut, and pathogenic bacteria. These human-related ARGs were largely associated with mobile genetic elements rather than particular gut taxa and mainly responsible for anthropogenically driven bloom of the downstream river resistome. Furthermore, both sequence- and phenotype-based analyses revealed environmental relatives of clinically important proteobacteria as major carriers of these ARGs., Conclusions: Our results demonstrate a more nuanced view of the impact of anthropogenic activities on the river resistome: fecal contamination is present and allows the transmission of ARGs to the environmental resistome, but these mobile genes rather than resistant fecal bacteria proliferate in environmental relatives of their original hosts. Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the therapeutic efficacy of adjuvant modalities for elderly Asian breast cancer patients using population-based data from the Korean Breast Cancer Registry database., Methods: We identified 53,582 patients who underwent curative surgery between January 2005 and December 2010. The primary end point was the comparison of overall survival between the administration or omission of adjuvant treatment modalities, including endocrine treatment, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy, in the elderly group (older than 75 years) compared with the control group (younger than 75 years)., Results: Of the 53,582 patients analyzed, the total number of elderly patients was 901 (1.7%), and the number of control patients was 52,681 (98.3%). Although elderly patients were found to have larger tumor sizes (p = 0.024) and higher pathological stages (p < 0.001) than the control group, elderly patients were less likely to undergo adjuvant treatment compared to the control group. However, use of endocrine treatment in elderly patients with HR-positive breast cancer is associated with improved overall survival (OS) (adjusted OR 0.417; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.240-0.726; p = 0.002). Furthermore, chemotherapy was associated with a significant improvement in OS in patients with stage II and III breast cancer (adjusted OR 0.657; 95% CI 0.462-0.934; p = 0.019)., Conclusion: Endocrine treatment and chemotherapy for elderly patients are associated with improved OS. Therefore, personalized decision-making based on the potential survival benefit of adjuvant treatment modalities should be made with the careful counseling of all elderly patients with breast cancer.

Silent information regulator 2 (Sirtuin2 / SIRT2) is a NAD + -dependent deacetylase that regulates the cellular oxidative stress response. It modulates transcriptional silencing and protein stability through deacetylation of target proteins including histones. Previous studies have shown that SIRT2 plays a role in mood disorders and hippocampus-dependent cognitive function, but the underlying neurobiological mechanism is poorly understood. Here, we report that chronic stress suppresses SIRT2 expression in the hippocampus. Molecular and biochemical analyses indicate that the stress-induced decrease in the SIRT2 expression downregulates synaptic plasticity-related genes in the hippocampus through the increase of euchromatic histone-lysine N-methyltransferase 2 (Ehmt2) (also known as G9a). shRNA-mediated knockdown of SIRT2 in the dentate gyrus alters the expression of synaptic plasticity- related genes in a way similar to those induced by chronic stress, and produces depression-like behaviors. Our results indicate that SIRT2 plays an important role in the response to stress, thereby modulating depression-like behaviors.

The synthesis and characterization of poly(phenylene polysulfide) networks (PSNs) with controlled average sulfur ranks, from elemental sulfur (ES) and p -diiodobenzene (DIB), are investigated. The PSN films, prepared via simple hot pressing, are found to possess large extensibility up to around 300% and complete recovery of shape and mechanical properties after deformation, which are attributed to the loosely cross-linked network structures mainly consisting of linear poly(phenylene polysulfide) chains. The covalent polysulfide linkages in the PSNs also exhibit dynamic behaviors under ultraviolet (UV) or thermal treatment, thus, enabling self-healing and reprocessing of the films when scratched and broken, respectively. Combined with the unique mechanical properties of the PSNs, their high refractive index and excellent infrared (IR) transparency contribute to the preparation of stretchable, healable, and reprocessable IR transmitting materials for potential deformable and stretchable optical applications.

Solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) for Li-metal polymer batteries are prepared, in which poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO), lithium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI), and copper-oxide fillers are formulated. Their structural and electrochemical properties are analyzed when the morphology of the copper-oxide fillers has been modulated to spherical or dendritic structure. The ionic conductivity obtained by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) has been increased to 1.007 × 10 -4 S cm -1 at 30 °C and 1.368 × 10 -3 S cm -1 at 60 °C, as the 5 wt% dendritic fillers have been added to the SPEs. This ionic conductivity value is 1.3 times higher than that of 5 wt% spherical filler-contained SPEs. The analyses of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) indicate that the increase of ionic conductivity is due to the remarkable decrease of crystallinity upon the addition of copper-oxide filler into PEO matrix of SPEs. The fabricated SPEs with the dendritic copper-oxide fillers present a total ionic transference number of 0.99 and a lithium-ion transference number of 0.38. More importantly, it presents a stable potential window of 2.0-4.8 V at 25 °C and high thermal stability up to 300 °C. The specific discharge capacity of the prepared cell with the dendritic filler-contained SPEs is measured to be 51 mA h g -1 and 125 mA h g -1 under 0.1 current-rate (C-rate) at 25 °C and 60 °C, respectively. In this study, the ionic conductivity and the electrochemical performance of the PEO-based polymer electrolyte have been evaluated when morphologically different copper-oxide fillers have been incorporated into the PEO matrix. Biomimetic polymeric materials, adopting the basic molecular design principles of biological materials, have been extensively studied in recent years but it is still challenging to combine assorted mechanical characteristics in a single material. Here, we present a simple and effective strategy to prepare mechanically robust yet resilient biomimetic polymer networks by utilizing dual noncovalent and covalent cross-linkings. Tailoring the dual cross-links consisting of thiourea noncovalent interactions and epoxy-amine covalent linkages in the biomimetic polymer networks enables a rare combination of excellent elastic modulus (1.1 GPa), yield stress (39 MPa), extensibility (320%), as well as complete strain and performance recovery after deformation at room temperature. In this study, thermally conductive composite films were fabricated using an anisotropic boron nitride (BN) and hybrid filler system mixed with spherical aluminum nitride (AlN) or aluminum oxide (Al₂O₃) particles in a polyimide matrix. The hybrid system yielded a decrease in the through-plane thermal conductivity, however an increase in the in-plane thermal conductivity of the BN composite, resulting from the horizontal alignment and anisotropy of BN. The behavior of the in-plane thermal conductivity was theoretically treated using the Lewis⁻Nielsen and modified Lewis⁻Nielsen theoretical prediction models. A single-filler system using BN exhibited a relatively good fit with the theoretical model. Moreover, a hybrid system was developed based on two-population approaches, the additive and multiplicative. This development represented the first ever implementation of two different ceramic conducting fillers. The multiplicative-approach model yielded overestimated thermal conductivity values, whereas the additive approach exhibited better agreement for the prediction of the thermal conductivity of a binary-filler system.

PTEN hamartoma tumor syndrome is a spectrum of disorders characterized by unique phenotypic features including multiple hamartomas caused by mutations of the tumor suppressor gene PTEN. Cowden syndrome and Bannayan-Riley-Ruvalcaba syndrome are representative diseases, and both have several common clinical features and differences. Because PTEN mutations are associated with an increased risk of malignancy including breast, thyroid, endometrial, and renal cancers, cancer surveillance is an important element of disease management. We report a germline mutation of the PTEN (c.723dupT, exon 7) identified in a young woman with a simultaneous occurrence of breast cancer, dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans, and follicular neoplasm. This case suggests that it is critical for clinicians to recognize the phenotypic features associated with these syndromes to accurately diagnose them and provide preventive care.
