This study was to compare the total phenolic (TP) content in extracts from eleven plant materials collected at different geographical locations in Kenya, Nigeria, and USA. These plants have been selected because the majority of them are highly pigmented, from yellow to purple, and would therefore have economic value in industries for producing antioxidants and surfactants. Two of them were collected from the industrial and domestic waste outlets. Each analysis was achieved using the Folin-Ciocalteau technique. The order of decreasing phenolic acid content as gallic acid concentration (mg/g dry weight) was Prunus africana (55.14) > Acacia tortilis (42.11) > Khaya grandifoliola (17.54) > Curcuma longa (17.23) > Vernonia amygdalina (14.9)> Russelia equisetiformis (14.03) > Calendula officinalis (7.96) >Phragmites australis (control) (7.09) > Rauwolfia vomitoria (6.69) > Phragmites australis (industrial) (6.21) > Cnidoscolus aconitifolius (5.6). The TP contents of Spartina alterniflora species were below the detection limit.

Thin layer chromatography (TLC) analysis revealed that destructive distillation of Juniperus procera tree gave ten major components, whereas Croton megalocarpus tree yielded five components. This was confirmed by gas chromatography (GC). The components were isolated by column chromatography and analysed using infrared, ultra-violet, visible and mass spectroscopy (MS) techniques. The whole extract was about 30.3% of the starting material (sawdust) and consisted of 77.5% water and 22.5% oily reddish-brown layer. The extracts had alcoholic and phenolic compounds together with acids. Cedrol, a tertiary tricyclic alcohol, was found to be in the greatest proportion in the oily layer. IR spectra with a peak beyond 3000 cm(-1), UV-VIS absorption maxima at 230 nm and mass spectra with m/e 204 suggested the presence of cedrene in the extract.

Background: Kenya is a high hepatitis B virus (HBV) endemic zone. Prevention of HBV transmission by transfusing safe blood is necessary. Kits for screening hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) are usually imported and are expensive. Hence it has been difficult to screen donated and patient blood samples all over Kenya., Objective: To produce a HBsAg screening kit locally in order to be able to screen donated and patient blood samples all over Kenya., Design: A laboratory based study., Setting: Centre for Virus Research (CVR), Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI), Nairobi., Method: Purified HBsAg from plasma of carriers obtained from National Public Health Laboratories Services (NPHLS) was used to minimise guinea pigs to produce antihepatitis B (anti HBs) antibody. The anti HBs was then used to sensitise sheep red blood cells (SRBC). The final product was freeze dried (lyophilised) and its sensitivity and specificity was compared with other commercial kits., Results: The sensitivity and specificity of KEMRI Hep-cell II was found to be 98% and 99%, respectively. The kit was found to be stable and potent for one year whether kept 4 degrees C, 37 degrees C or room temperature., Conclusion: KEMRI Hep-cell II was successfully produced locally. The sensitivity and specificity were comparable to other commercial kits. The kit was stable and potent for one year between temperature of 4 degrees C and 37 degrees C. The kit required only simple apparatus to carry out the test hence it can be used anywhere in Kenya. It was also cheap and affordable.

An epizootic in free-ranging lesser flamingos (Phoeniconaias minor) in Kenya resulted in more than 18,500 deaths from August through mid-November 1993. Disease was concentrated along the shores of Rift Valley Lakes Bogoria and Nakuru (Kenya) and did not involve any of the other avian or mammalian species frequenting the lakes. Coincidental to the outbreak was a bloom of algae on Lake Bogoria, toxins from which were first suspected to be causative. Discrete necrotic and granulomatous lesions were often noted in spleen and liver, and Mycobacterium avium serovar I was isolated from both organs. Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa also were often recovered in pure culture from liver. Gross and histopathological evaluation of the cases disclosed signs of acute sepsis and also chronic, potentially life-threatening lesions of mycobacteriosis, primarily involving the spleen and liver. Lesions typical for algae toxicosis were not seen in any birds. Deaths were attributed to septicemia complicated in those affected, by mycobacteriosis.

Objective: To determine the efficacy and safety of hepaccine B., Design: Vaccination on first-come-first-served basis., Setting: Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) staff and families at Nairobi, Kenya., Participants: A total of 107 vaccinees aged 0-10 years and 10 years and above., Main Outcome: Antibody to hepatitis B surface antigen (anti HBs) checked one month after the third dose of the vaccine., Results: Ninety seven per cent of the vaccinees developed antiHBs. Side effects were few in the form of soreness at site of injection and headache., Conclusion: Hepaccine B produced good immune response in vaccinees with minimal side effects.

Background: An adult female goat with rare malformations, which consisted of duplication of the intestinal, lower urinary, and genital tracts as well a pair of parasitic appendages, is presented., Methods: A complete dissection was performed on a moribund female goat (Capra hircus)., Results: The animal had a normal body with a parasitic attachment located within the pelvic region. This attachment was represented by an ovoid, trunk-like, adipose mass that lacked internal organs or vertebrae but that had two fairly well-developed limbs with the normal components of hind limbs. There was duplication involving the external and internal genitalia, the urethra, the urinary bladder, and portions of the small intestine as well as the large bowel, including the anal openings., Conclusions: An autosite with a duplication involving the hindgut and paramesonephric anlages was identified. These features were compatible with life in utero and postutero and emanated from incomplete twinning (heteropagus twins). A review of the literature also suggests that heteropagus twins are a very rare abnormality in both domestic animals and humans.

Five blue and black cloth traps designed for tsetse were tested for their ability to catch Stomoxys spp. in Kenya. Significantly greatest catches were obtained with Vavoua traps, which then were used to compare odor baits at Nairobi Park. Acetone, lactic acid, and animal urine (cow, buffalo, waterbuck, camel) or dung (rhinoceros, elephant, hippopotamus) did not increase catches. However, 1-octen-3-ol dispensed at 0.2-2.0 mg/h increased catches up to 3.7-fold. Vavoua traps were highly specific for Stomoxyinae, with 80% of the catch consisting of 11 different taxa of Stomoxys as well as genera such as Prostomoxys, Haematobosca, Stygeromyia, and Rhinomusca. During periods of peak seasonal abundance, up to 3,000 Stomoxys per day were collected in an octenol-baited Vavoua trap. These high catches suggest that Vavoua traps may be of practical use for fly control in isolated settings at a relatively low cost.

The prevalence of HBsAg positivity, liver cirrhosis (LC) and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is studied in 139 patients at the Clinical Research Centre of KEMRI. The prevalences were found to be 15.1%, 9.3 % and 10 % respectively. 14% of the HBsAg positives were also E antigen positive. The positivity of HBsAg in HCC was 42.9% only 15.4% in LC and 57.1% HCC had AFP compared to only 15.4% in LC. It is suggested that the findings support an association of Hepatitis B virus with LC and HCC.

Oxidation of ferrocene in acetonitrile resulted in films on Pt electrodes under voltammetric conditions. Films were more readily formed with tetrabutylammonium tetrafluoroborate as the electrolyte than with perchlorate salts. No films were detected when ferrocene was oxidized in aqueous 0.05 M cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). Analysis of the films by FT-IR and Auger spectroscopy confirmed iron-containing oxidation products on Pt, presumably from chemical reactions of ferricinium ions. Oxidation of 50-100 mM ferrocene in acetonitrile on Pt yielded insoluble precipitates. Analyses by MS, FT-IR, and UV-visible (water extract), suggested a mixture of oligomeric material and a small fraction of ferricinium ions. Film formation had much less influence on voltammograms on 12.5-micron-radius Pt microdisks than on 0.5-mm-radius Pt. This is consistent with the smaller sensitivity of microelectrodes to chemical reactions following charge transfer. The smaller apparent heterogeneous rate constants (k zero') found for ferrocene on macroelectrodes than on microelectrodes could possibly be influenced by film formation on larger Pt electrodes. Correlations between macro- and microelectrode kinetic data suggest that macroelectrode k zero' values may be valid in a relative sense when ohmic drop is negligible. Bias in k zero's on conventional-sized electrodes should be small in solutions giving minimal film formation, such as micellar CTAB.
