Background and Aims: According to the World Health Organization (WHO), an Adverse Drug Reaction (ADR) is defined as "a response to a drug which is noxious and unintended, and which occurs at doses normally used in humans for the prophylaxis, diagnosis, or therapy of disease, or for the modification of physiological function." The aim of this research was to evaluate the current practice and implement the best practices for detecting and reporting ADR in a tertiary hospital in Tabriz, Iran., Methods: We used a mixed-methods sequential explanatory design in the current study. The research was conceptually informed by the Joanna Briggs Institute model of Evidence-Based Healthcare (JBI EBHC). A three-phase implementation process, outlined by this model, was used in this study. The first and third phases comprised the quantitaive phase of the study, in which we evaluated the current practice and conducted a final evaluation to measure changes in compliance with the best practice. The qualitative phase, the second phase of the JBI EBHC model, was conducted to identify barriers and develop implementation strategies. There were seven evidence-based audit criteria for evaluating the practice, with a sample size of 23 nurses for the quantitative phase and 10 participants for the qualitative phase., Results: The quantitative findings revealed an improvement in compliance rates for all criteria following the follow-up audit. From the qualitative analysis, four themes of barriers were identified: time and workload, lack of a proper reporting system for ADR, lack of belief and readiness for change among nurses, and lack of awareness about the importance of documenting ADR., Conclusion: The results of this implementation study demonstrated enhanced ADR reporting. Introduction: Falls are the main cause of disability among psychiatric patients, as well as being the most common adverse event in hospitals., Aim: The aim of this evidence implementation project was to improve fall prevention and management among psychiatric patients in a neurology ward in an Iranian tertiary psychiatric hospital., Methods: This project used the JBI Evidence Implementation Framework, which recommends an audit, feedback, and re-audit strategy. A baseline audit was conducted to evaluate current fall prevention practices among 50 psychiatric patients and 20 health care professionals. The baseline audit was used to identify gaps in compliance. After the implementation of improvement strategies, a follow-up audit was conducted to measure any changes in practice., Results: The baseline and follow-up audits revealed that compliance with best practices improved in ward transfer fall risk assessment (Criterion 2: 87% to 90%), patient participation in fall risk assessment (Criterion 3: 95% to 96%), revising patient fall risk status (Criterion 9: 50% to 86%), and person-centered education of health care providers (Criterion 11: 78% to 96%). Other audit criteria remained unchanged. However, for Criterion 6 on patient engagement in goal-setting and treatment planning, compliance dropped from 100% at baseline to 94% at follow-up., Conclusions: This project successfully increased evidence-based practices regarding fall prevention and management, as well as providing mechanisms for sustaining the practice changes. Background: In light of the multi-faceted challenges confronting health systems worldwide and the imperative to advance towards development goals, the contribution of health policy graduates is of paramount importance, facilitating the attainment of health and well-being objectives. This paper delineates a set of core skills and competencies that are requisite for health policy graduates, with the objective of preparing these graduates for a spectrum of future roles, including both academic and non-academic positions., Methods: The study was conducted in three phases: a scoping review, qualitative interviews and the validation of identified competencies through brainstorming with experts. In the initial phase, a scoping review was conducted on the databases. The following databases were searched: PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science and Google Scholar search engine. Additionally, the WebPages of universities offering health policy programmes were manually searched. In the second phase, 36 semi-structured interviews were conducted with students, graduates and distinguished academics from Iran and other countries. These interviews were conducted in person or via email. In the third phase, the draft version of the competencies and their associated learning objectives, derived from the preceding stages, was subjected to independent review by an expert panel and subsequently discussed. In light of the expert panel's findings, the authors undertook a subsequent revision of the list, leading to the finalization of the core competencies through a process of consensus., Results: In the scoping review phase, the analysis included six studies and nine university curricula. The results of the scoping review could be classified into five domains: health system understanding, health policy research, knowledge translation, multidisciplinary work and knowledge of public health. In the second phase, six core competencies were extracted from the interviews and combined with the results of the first phase, which were then discussed by the expert panel at the third phase. The final five core competencies, derived from the brainstorming session and presented in no particular order, encompass health policy research, policy analysis, educational competencies, decision-making and multidisciplinary work., Conclusions: It is essential that the curriculum is appropriate and contextually tailored, as this is crucial to foster multi-dimensional competencies that complement the specific disciplines of future health policy scholars. Background: A better understanding of health system performance requires evaluating achievements and challenges, thereby providing a basis for effective reforms. This systematic review aims to investigate the challenges and weaknesses of leadership and governance-related health policies in Iran., Methods: In this qualitative systematic review, we followed the instructions of the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI). It encompassed qualitative studies assessing challenges and weaknesses of leadership and governance-related health policies. Thematic synthesis was conducted in three stages to identify common themes., Results: The primary database search yielded 1890 records, of which 152 were fully assessed, resulting in the inclusion of 57 studies in this review. Thematic synthesis produced 157 structured codes and identified 11 main descriptive themes of challenges in leadership and governance-related health policies. These themes included hospital autonomy policy, challenges to the entire health system, governance of medical universities, healthcare payment systems, sustainable universal health insurance coverage, informal payments, insurance systems, induced demand, strategic purchasing of health services, the family physician program, family physician and rural health insurance programs, and primary healthcare human resources., Conclusion: The identified challenges underscore the urgent need for strategic reforms and interventions to overcome the complex issues plaguing the healthcare system. Objective: The objective of this qualitative systematic review will be to understand the experiences of mental health practitioners after clients' suicide., Introduction: Mental health practitioners inevitably encounter client suicide during their careers, which can significantly affect their personal lives and professional outcomes. A deeper understanding of mental health practitioners' experiences in the aftermath of clients' suicide is necessary to provide effective support and assist with adaptation to this situation., Inclusion Criteria: This systematic review will consider qualitative studies that explore the experiences of mental health practitioners, including psychotherapists, psychiatrists, psychological counselors, clinical psychologists, psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners, and social workers following clients' suicide. Experiences may include emotional responses, coping strategies, changes in social relationships, and reflections on practice., Methods: This review will follow the JBI methodology for qualitative systematic reviews. The databases to be searched will include PubMed, CINAHL (EBSCOhost), Embase, PsycINFO (EBSCOhost), SocINDEX (EBSCOhost), Web of Science, CNKI, Wanfang, VIP, Bibliographia Medica Čechoslovaca, and Bibliographia Medica Slovaca. Gray literature sources will include Google Scholar, and ProQuest. Studies in English, Czech, Slovak, and Chinese will be assessed for inclusion regardless of publication date. Studies that are initially selected will be assessed for methodological quality using the JBI critical appraisal tool for qualitative studies. Then, findings with illustrations will be extracted for subsequent meta-aggregation and ConQual assessment. Cancer of the thyroid has become the fastest-growing cancer among women in the past several decades. This study is aimed at using scientometric methods to identify research frontiers and development trends in the field of thyroid cancer (TC) research. We used the Scopus database to collect articles and reviews related to TC in November 2022. R software and Bibliometrix software package were used for scientometric analysis. More than 28,000 articles were obtained from Scopus using the defined specific keywords. The United States, France, and England published the most publications. Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism and Cancer were found as the core journals in this field. Morris LGT, Sikora AG, and Davies L authored the most publications. National Cancer Institute, National Cancer Institute at NIH, and the University of Washington contributed the most publications. The most cited evidence was related to the articles of Bray (2018), Sung (2021), and Parkin (2005). Using scientometric analysis, this study mapped and visualized the knowledge landscape in the field of TC. The analysis showed that scientists in the field of TC are working collaboratively to tackle one of the most prevalent cancers in the world. Introduction and Objectives: Basic life support (BLS) is foundational to the care delivered to cardiac arrest victims. This study evaluated current practices and implemented best practices related to BLS training for intensive care unit (ICU) nurses in a general hospital in Tabriz, Iran., Methods: This interventional before-after study was informed by the JBI Evidence Implementation Framework. An audit, feedback, and re-audit strategy was used to measure baseline compliance with best practices, develop an implementation strategy to address gaps in compliance, and undertake a final evaluation to measure changes in compliance. The JBI Practical Application of Clinical Evidence System (JBI PACES) and situational analysis Getting Research into Practice (GRiP) tool were used to support data collection and implementation planning. There were 13 evidence-based criteria and a sample of 9 ICU nurses., Results: The baseline audit revealed gaps between current practice and best practice in 9 of the 13 criteria. Barriers included insufficient education tools and programs, insufficient supervision, lack of skills laboratories, and a lack of continuous BLS education. Improvement strategies included providing a human stimulator manikin, developing an education program for nurses, as well as establishing a cardiopulmonary-cerebral resuscitation department, a skills laboratory, and continuous BLS education based on the American Heart Association guidelines. Introduction and Objectives: Health care providers need a high level of communication skills in dealing with pediatric patients and their carers. The objective of this project was to evaluate current practice and implement best practices promoting health care provider communication with pediatric patients and carers in a children's hospital in Tabriz, Iran., Methods: This project used the JBI Model of Evidence-Based Healthcare, which guided the conceptualization of evidence implementation, context analysis, project implementation, and evaluation of outcomes using evidence-based quality indicators. An audit and feedback strategy was adopted to measure baseline compliance with best practices, develop strategies to address areas of non-compliance, and conduct a final audit to measure any changes in compliance. Four criteria were developed for the baseline and follow-up audits. Criteria 1 and 2 were evaluated using a sample of 30 health care providers, while Criteria 3 and 4 were evaluated using a sample of 80 pediatric patients and carers., Results: All four criteria improved at the end of the project. Criterion 1 (health care staff receive communication skills training) had the highest mean score at baseline and follow-up (63% and 83%, respectively). Criterion 2 (implementation of local strategies by health care organizations) increased from 45% to 55%. However, this rate of improvement was the lowest of all the criteria. Criterion 3 (pediatric patients receive relevant education) improved from low to moderate, rising from 18% to 49%. A more significant improvement was noted for Criterion 4 (parents receive relevant education), which rose from 19% to 56%., Conclusions: The strategies implemented in this project successfully improved health care provider communication with pediatric patients and their carers. Introduction: Frailty is conventionally diagnosed using clinical tests and self-reported assessments. However, digital health technologies (DHTs), such as wearable accelerometers, can capture physical activity and gait during daily life, enabling more objective assessments. In this study, we assess the feasibility of deploying DHTs in community-dwelling older individuals, and investigate the relationship between digital measurements of physical activity and gait in naturalistic environments and participants' frailty status, as measured by conventional assessments., Methods: Fried Frailty Score (FFS) was used to classify fifty healthy individuals as non-frail (FFS = 0, n/female = 21/11, mean ± SD age: 71.10 ± 3.59 years), pre-frail (FFS = 1-2, n/female = 23/9, age: 73.74 ± 5.52 years), or frail (FFS = 3+, n/female = 6/6, age: 70.70 ± 6.53 years). Participants wore wrist-worn and lumbar-worn GENEActiv accelerometers (Activinsights Ltd., Kimbolton, UK) during three in-laboratory visits, and at-home for 2 weeks, to measure physical activity and gait. After this period, they completed a comfort and usability questionnaire. Compliant days at-home were defined as follows: those with ≥18 h of wear time, for the wrist-worn accelerometer, and those with ≥1 detected walking bout, for the lumbar-worn accelerometer. For each at-home measurement, a group analysis was performed using a linear regression model followed by ANOVA, to investigate the effect of frailty on physical activity and gait. Correlation between at-home digital measurements and conventional in-laboratory assessments was also investigated., Results: Participants were highly compliant in wearing the accelerometers, as 94% indicated willingness to wear the wrist device, and 66% the lumbar device, for at least 1 week. Time spent in sedentary activity and time spent in moderate activity as measured from the wrist device, as well as average gait speed and its 95th percentile from the lumbar device were significantly different between frailty groups. Moderate correlations between digital measurements and self-reported physical activity were found., Conclusions: This work highlights the feasibility of deploying DHTs in studies involving older individuals. Introduction: During the unprecedented COVID-19 lockdowns, road traffic was limited, and a change in the traumatic emergency admission pattern was anticipated. We conducted the current systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on hospital admissions due to road traffic crashes., Methods: This systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted based on the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) instructions. The following databases were searched: PubMed, ISI Web of Knowledge, Scopus, ProQuest, and the Cochrane Library. Two independent reviewers screened articles based on the inclusion criteria for the review and assessed the methodological quality of the included studies using an appropriate appraisal checklist, introduced by the JBI, based on the study type. The meta-analysis was performed using Comprehensive meta-analysis (CMA) software. Considering the heterogeneity among studies, a random effect model was adopted to estimate the pooled effect with 95% confidence interval (CI) for binary outcomes., Results: A total of 13 studies were included in this systematic review, and all of them were considered for meta-analysis. According to the meta-analysis, differences in hospital admission rates during the COVID-19 pandemic and one year before this pandemic were statistically significant [RR: 0.685 CI 95% (0.578 -0.813) p<0.00001]. The heterogeneity assessment of the included studies in the meta-analysis showed high heterogeneity (I 2 =78%, p<0.00001)., Conclusion: The results of this systematic review showed that the COVID-19 pandemic dramatically reduced the number of hospital admissions related to road traffic crashes because of both quarantines and lifestyle changes. Retinal diseases are a leading cause of blindness in developed countries, accounting for the largest share of visually impaired children, working-age adults (inherited retinal disease), and elderly individuals (age-related macular degeneration). These conditions need specialised clinicians to interpret multimodal retinal imaging, with diagnosis and intervention potentially delayed. With an increasing and ageing population, this is becoming a global health priority. One solution is the development of artificial intelligence (AI) software to facilitate rapid data processing. Herein, we review research offering decision support for the diagnosis, classification, monitoring, and treatment of retinal disease using AI. We have prioritised diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, inherited retinal disease, and retinopathy of prematurity. There is cautious optimism that these algorithms will be integrated into routine clinical practice to facilitate access to vision-saving treatments, improve efficiency of healthcare systems, and assist clinicians in processing the ever-increasing volume of multimodal data, thereby also liberating time for doctor-patient interaction and co-development of personalised management plans., (© 2023. Introduction and Objectives: Telephone follow-up (TFU) is a method that can be recommended for patients with chronic disease, including patients with nonmuscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) after transurethral resection of the bladder (TURB). This project aimed to improve postdischarge TFU of patients with TURB in a tertiary care system and referral system in Tabriz, Iran., Methods: This evidence implementation project used the JBI evidence implementation framework. Two audit criteria were used. A baseline audit was conducted, followed by the implementation of multiple strategies. The project was finalized with a follow-up audit to evaluate changes in practice., Results: The aggregated data collated from the urology ward demonstrated that all criteria had achieved 0% compliance in the baseline audit round. Strategies such as patient education about TFU, educational pamphlets developed according to the latest validated guidelines, and a mobile app for education material about bladder cancer, diagnosis, management, and follow-up were implemented. The Phase 3 follow-up showed an 88% increase in compliance with staff education about the postdischarge TFU as a component of comprehensive discharge planning and a 22% achievement of timely patient follow-up by telephone., Conclusions: A clinical audit is an effective approach to promoting postdischarge TFU in bladder cancer cases following TURB. Actions that are taken to preserve effective antibacterial agents and eliminate transmission of resistant organisms are crucial to prevent a catastrophic postantibiotic era. In this systematic review, we searched and appraised relevant texts and expert opinions to determine effective strategies to tackle bacterial resistance worldwide. We considered expert opinions, consensus, current discourses, comments, assumptions or assertions and discussion papers published in English. We searched following databases for expert opinion-based literature: MEDLINE, CINAHL, ISI Web of Knowledge, SCOPUS, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials and World Health Organization (WHO). We extracted the textual data from texts using a standardised data extraction tool. Textual pooling was not possible, so the conclusions were presented in a narrative form. Eighteen texts were included in this review. The findings show that, the most repeated policies and strategies include implementing and strengthening bacterial resistance surveillance, developing national guidelines, improving public awareness; enhancing home and everyday life hygiene; improving prescribing patterns, improving laboratories capacity, promoting innovation and research in new drugs and technology and strengthening coordination. This review systematically gathered strategies that were recommended by textual publications. To our knowledge, this was the first systematic review of text and opinion in the field of bacterial resistance. Introduction: Inherited retinal diseases (IRD) are a leading cause of visual impairment and blindness in the working age population. Mutations in over 300 genes have been found to be associated with IRDs and identifying the affected gene in patients by molecular genetic testing is the first step towards effective care and patient management. However, genetic diagnosis is currently slow, expensive and not widely accessible. The aim of the current project is to address the evidence gap in IRD diagnosis with an AI algorithm, Eye2Gene, to accelerate and democratise the IRD diagnosis service., Methods and Analysis: The data-only retrospective cohort study involves a target sample size of 10 000 participants, which has been derived based on the number of participants with IRD at three leading UK eye hospitals: Moorfields Eye Hospital (MEH), Oxford University Hospital (OUH) and Liverpool University Hospital (LUH), as well as a Japanese hospital, the Tokyo Medical Centre (TMC). Eye2Gene aims to predict causative genes from retinal images of patients with a diagnosis of IRD. For this purpose, 36 most common causative IRD genes have been selected to develop a training dataset for the software to have enough examples for training and validation for detection of each gene. The total fertility rate in Iran has declined to below replacement level recently, and a new approach has been taken to tackle this issue. Thus, this study aimed to identify the involved stakeholders and their characteristics in the new population policy change in Iran. We employed a qualitative approach using the purposive sampling of key informants and the identification of relevant documents. The main stakeholders were divided into seven key groups: religious, political, governmental, professional, international sectors, media, and nongovernmental organizations. In addition, there was no centralized, clear, and comprehensive mechanism to guide the activities of stakeholders to coordinate and bring the total fertility rate to the replacement level in Iran. Despite the importance of the new population policy in Iran, in recent years, we still experience dispersion and inconsistency among various actors in this area. Purpose: The objective of this meta-synthesis was to identify, appraise, and synthesize patients and provider's experiences while using telemedicine in cancer care during the COVID-19 pandemic., Methods: The databases Medline, Embase, Cinahl, PsycInfo, Web of Science, and other related databases were searched. Reviewers followed the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) meta-aggregation method to identify categories and synthesized findings and to assign a level of confidence to synthesized findings. The listed quotations and the original author interpretations were synthesized using MAXQDA software., Results: Nineteen studies were included in the meta-synthesis. Three synthesized findings emerged from 243 primary findings: telemedicine assists but cannot be a substitute for face-to-face appointments in a health care crisis and in the provision of routine care to stable patients with cancer, infrastructural drivers and healthcare provider's support and attention affect patients' experiences and feelings about telemedicine, and patients who use telemedicine expect their health care providers to devote enough time and consider emotional needs, the lack of which can develop a negative response. The methodological quality of the studies ranged between 4 and 10, and the overall level of confidence of the synthesized findings was determined to be low and medium., Conclusion: The findings from this meta-synthesis gave a new insight to promoting the safe and evidence-based use of telemedicine during the current pandemic and future emergencies., (© 2022. Purpose: Bisphosphonates (BPs) have a powerful effect on reducing bone resorption and improving the survival of patients with breast cancer. We aimed to investigate the impact of BP treatment on the prevention of recurrence, metastasis, and death of breast cancer survivors in the perimenopausal period., Methods: The search strategy aimed to identify both published and unpublished studies in PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, Embase, ProQuest, and Google Scholar in March 2021. Two independent reviewers assessed quantitative papers selected for retrieval for methodological validity before being included in the review using standardized critical appraisal instruments from the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) Meta-Analysis of Statistics Assessment and Review Instrument (JBI-MAStARI). Statistical meta-analysis was performed using Review Manager (RevMan) 5.4 statistical software when the data were homogenous. Meta-analysis was performed by calculating the effect size (hazard ratio; HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs)., Results: Twenty-one studies were eligible for this systematic review and meta-analysis. The overall The HRs for disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) in women who received BPs were 0.89 (95% CI, 0.83-0.97; p = 0.005), and 0.75 (95% CI, 0.63-0.89; p = 0.001), respectively. The results showed that BPs had a significant effect on the prevention of locoregional (HR, 0.64; 95% CI, 0.42-0.97; p = 0.04), bone (95% CI, 0.74-0.95; p ≤ 0.001), and distant metastases (HR, 0.77; 95% CI, 0.62-0.94; p = 0.01). Introduction: The first case of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Iran was officially announced on February 19, 2020, in Qom city. The prevalence of COVID-19 is higher among frontline healthcare workers (HCWs) due to their occupational exposure., Objective: The aim of this evidence implementation project was to improve the protection of nurses against COVID-19 in the emergency department of a teaching hospital in Tabriz, Iran., Methods: A clinical audit was undertaken using the JBI Practical Application of Clinical Evidence System (JBI PACES) tool. Ten audit criteria, representing the best practice recommendations for the protection of HCWs in the emergency department were used. A baseline audit was conducted, followed by the implementation of multiple strategies. The project was finalized with a follow-up audit to evaluate changes in practice., Results: The baseline audit results showed that the compliances for four (out of ten) audit criteria (criteria 4, 7, 8 and 9), were under 75%, which indicated poor and moderate compliance with the current evidence. After implementing plans such as running educational programs and meetings, major improvement was observed in 3 criteria, criterion 4 was improved from low to excellent (41-81%), criterion 7 was promoted from low to moderate (30-62%), criterion 8 was not promoted considerably (22-27%) and criterion 9 was improved from moderate to excellent (70-84%)., Conclusion: The results of the audit process increased COVID-19 protection measures for nurses in the emergency department. This qualitative systematic review was conducted to summarize the policies for prevention of common gastrointestinal cancers worldwide. This study was conducted using PubMed, Web of Science, SCOPUS, and ProQuest databases. Two independent reviewers assessed included studies for methodological quality and extracted data by using standardized tools from Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI). Primary study findings were read and reread to identify the strategies or policies used in the studies for prevention of gastrointestinal cancers. The extracted findings were categorized on the basis of their similarity in meaning. These categories were then subjected to a meta-synthesis. The final synthesized findings were graded according to the ConQual approach for establishing confidence in the output of qualitative research synthesis. From the nine included studies in this review, 39 findings were extracted and based on their relevance in meaning were aggregated into 12 categories. Four synthesized findings were developed from these categories. We used World Health Organization report on 2000 for synthesizing the findings. The four synthesized findings were "service provision", "resource generation", "financing", and "stewardship". Circadian rhythms are maintained by a complex "system of systems" that continuously coordinates biological processes with each other and the environment. Although humans predominantly entrain to solar time, individual persons vary in their precise behavioral timing due to endogenous and exogenous factors. Endogenous differences in the timing of individual circadian rhythms relative to a common environmental cue are known as chronotypes, ranging from earlier than average (Morningness) to later than average (Eveningness). Furthermore, individual behavior is often constrained by social constructs such as the 7-day week, and the "sociogenic" impact our social calendar has on our behavioral rhythms is likely modified by chronotype. Our aim in this study was to identify and characterize differences in sleep and rest-activity rhythms (RAR) between weekends and weekdays and between-chronotypes. Male volunteers (n = 24, mean age = 23.46 y) were actigraphically monitored for 4 weeks to derive objective behavioral measures of sleep and RARs. Chronotype was assessed through self-report on the Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire. Sleep characteristics were derived using Actiware; daily rest-activity rhythms were modeled using a basic 3-parameter cosinor function. We observed that both Eveningness and Morningness Chronotypes were more active and slept later on the weekends than on weekdays. Significant between-chronotype differences in sleep timing and duration were observed within individual days of the week, especially during transitions between weekends and the workweek. Moreover, chronotypes significantly varied in their weekly rhythms: e.g. Morningness Chronotypes generally shifted their sleep duration, timing and quality across work/rest transitions quicker than Eveningness Chronotypes. Although our results should be interpreted with caution due to the limitations of our cosinor model and a homogenous cohort, they reinforce a growing body of evidence that day of the week, chronotype and their interactions must be accounted for in observational studies of human behavior, especially when circadian rhythms are of interest.

Background: Gastrointestinal cancers continue to claim the lives of thousands of individuals. Fortunately, primary prevention, which focuses on interventions to change unhealthy lifestyle behaviors, can lessen the negative effects and decrease the economic burden of these cancers. The purpose of this paper is to assess the likelihood of adopting gastrointestinal cancer prevention policies through the lens of Kingdon's theory of agenda setting., Methods: A qualitative study was conducted using document review and face-to-face interviews with 22 key informants from different stages of the policymaking process of gastrointestinal cancer prevention program in Iran. We used purposive sampling. Our analysis of documents and interview were guided based on Kingdon's multiple streams (problem stream, policy stream, and political stream)., Results: Based on the results of this study the important factors of problem stream are as below. The high cost of gastrointestinal cancer diagnostic services dramatically affect patient's financial affordability to essential cancer-related services. Consequently, most of the cancers show distant metastasis at the time of diagnosis, imposing catastrophic expenses to patients, society, and the health systems. In the policy stream, participants mentioned the importance of the cancer registry system in the country that provides a clear source of information for decision-makers to plan for early diagnostic services. Under the political stream, the national and international supports provide a favorable climate for this issue., Conclusion: Now that a window of opportunity for gastrointestinal cancer prevention policymaking is created, there is a need for greater efforts to strengthen the inter-sectoral collaboration. Background: Gastrointestinal cancers in Iran are among the major non-communicable diseases with a considerable burden on the health system. Changes in lifestyles as well as environmental factors have resulted in the emergence of these cancers., Objective: To elicit and quantitatively verify experts' opinions regarding the potential public health impact, feasibility, economic impact, and budgetary impact of gastrointestinal cancer prevention policies in Iran., Methods: Sixteen experts from Iran were recruited in an email-based, two-round Delphi study. In each round, a questionnaire of policy options for preventing gastrointestinal cancers, which adhered to the new policy framework of the World Cancer Research Fund International, was given to participants. In the first round, experts were asked to provide opinions for and against the policy options. The second round evaluated the policy options for their public health impact, feasibility, economic impact, and budgetary impact., Results: A total of 32 policy options were organized based on three domains: health-enhancing environments, system changes, and behavior change communications. Of the 32 policy options, there were consensus in 31 (96%) and 30 (93%) options for public health impact and feasibility, respectively. On study completion, experts reached a consensus in 29 of 32 (90%) policy options for economic impact; only on 26 (81%) of these policy options did participants reached consensus for budgetary impact., Conclusion: Findings indicated that although nearly all policy options reached a consensus for their public health impact, some options are not feasible or do not appear to have an economic rationale for being implemented. Moreover, it is crucial to take into account the inter-sectoral collaboration between health and non-health sectors. Findings from this study can be helpful for health policymakers in identifying support for evidence-informed approaches regarding gastrointestinal cancer prevention.

Introduction: Parents of infants admitted to hospital have high information needs. A good educational program will improve the outcomes and communication needs of these parents. Results from some studies have shown that patient education in Iran is inappropriate and should be improved., Objectives: The aim of this evidence implementation project was to evaluate the current practice and implement the best practice related to promoting patient education in a children's hospital in Tabriz, Iran., Methods: A clinical audit was undertaken using the Joanna Briggs Institute Practical Application of Clinical Evidence System tool. Eight audit criteria that represent the best practice recommendations for patient education were used. A baseline audit was conducted followed by implementing multiple strategies, and the project was finalized with a follow-up audit to determine a change in practice., Results: Significant improvements in the follow-up audit in comparison with the baseline audit were as follows: evaluation of patient learning has been undertaken to determine met and unmet needs (from 65 to 77%); patients' learning needs, readiness to learn, and their learning style have been assessed before the implementation of an educational initiative (from 55 to 66%); and educational resources in different formats (e.g., written handouts, brochures, and links to online materials) are available in the ward (from 33 to 77%). Strategies that were implemented to achieve change in practice included conducting workshops and conferences, determining a trained nurse as responsible for educating parents, training in discharge time, the presentation of educational films daily, conducting group training, and installing related posters in the department and patient's room. The other five criteria were less compliant with best practice in the follow-up audit rather than the baseline audit; however, all of them except one (Criterion 3) were still up to 75% compliant, which is considered excellent by the audit team., Conclusion: The follow-up audit results indicated an improvement in providing parental education. Purpose : Spontaneous eye-blink rate is the number of involuntary blinks performed during a certain period of time. Assessing blink rate in humans provides valuable physiological and behavioral data for studying neuropathology and emotional states. Cognitive states, including awareness on the part of the subject that his or her blinks are being counted, may influence blink activity and confound blink rate measurements. The goal of this study was to provide direct experimental evaluation of the hypothesis that subject awareness affects tasked-based blink activity. Materials and methods : 30 young healthy adult males with normal vision underwent a series of tasks - viewing images, talking, sitting quietly, and cross fixation - while being video recorded. Each subject completed the tasks naively, then repeated them after being explicitly told their blink rate was being measured. Blink rate was measured through minute-by-minute blink counts by human raters. Results : We found a transitory impact on blink count during the first and third minute of a passive image-viewing task that occurred immediately after subjects were informed of their eye blinks being counted. However, the overall blink rate across the 7-min passive image-viewing task was not influenced. In three other tasks - fixation, silence, and conversation - we observed no statistically significant difference in minute-by-minute blink count or overall blink rate. Conclusions : We conclude that informing a subject that his eye blinks are being counted exerts a modest but significant acute influence on blinking activity, but critically does not appear to confound blink rate over prolonged tasks.

In this rapid review, we aimed to evaluate the effect of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) on renal functions and mortality of patients with kidney diseases. We searched MEDLINE, The Cochrane Library, Scopus, Embase, Web of Science, UpToDate, and TRIP databases using the following keywords: COVID-19, COVID19, 2019-nCoV, 2019-CoV, coronavirus, SARS-nCoV-2, urology, cancer, bladder, prostate, kidney, trauma, stone, neurogenic, and reconstructive. The initial search resulted in 495 records. After the primary screening of titles, abstracts, and full texts and removing duplicates, 10 articles were selected and included in this rapid review. Moreover, we performed meta-analysis of binary data for the outcomes with sufficient data. Owing to a high level of heterogeneity because of different study designs and contexts, we used a random model for the meta-analysis. Only 5 studies were eligible for the meta-analysis. In these studies, comprising 964 COVID-19 positive patients, the cumulative event rate of acute kidney injury (AKI) was 7.1% (95% confidence interval: 1.8%-24.5%, p<0.001, I2=92.4). Based on the qualitative synthesis of the 10 included studies, patients with COVID-19 and kidney diseases had higher risk of in-hospital mortality. If AKI occurs because of the novel coronavirus, the mortality rate will be very high. Therefore, we need further investigations and more studies to recognize the extent and the cause of renal involvement in COVID-19.

The continuous, longitudinal nature of accelerometry monitoring is well-suited to capturing the regular 24-hour oscillations in human activity across the day, the cumulative effect of our circadian rhythm and behavior. Disruption of the circadian rhythm in turn disrupts rest-activity rhythms. Although circadian disruption is a major feature of Parkinson's disease (PD), rest-activity rhythms and their relationship with disease severity have not been well characterized in PD. 13 PD participants (Hoehn & Yahr Stage [H&Y] 1-3) wore a Philips Actiwatch Spectrum PRO continuously for two separate weeks. Rest-activity rhythms were quantified by fitting an oscillating 24-hour cosinor model to each participant-day of activity data. One-way ANOVAs adjusted for demographics revealed significant variation in the amount (MESOR, F = 12.76, p < .01), range (Amplitude, F = 9.62, p < .01), and timing (Acrophase, F = 2.7, p = .05) of activity across H&Y Stages. Those with higher H&Y Stages were significantly more likely to be active later in the day, where-as those who shifted between H&Y Stages during the study were significantly more active than those who did not change H&Y Stage. Being active later in the day was also significantly associated with higher scores on the Movement Disorder Society's Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (MDS-UPDRS) Section III (motor symptom severity, p = .02), Section II (self-reported impact of motor symptoms on daily living, p = .01), and Total Score ( p = .01) in an adjusted linear regression model; significant associations between MDS-UPDRS scores and activity levels were observed only in the unadjusted model. These findings demonstrate that continuous actigraphy is capable of detecting rest-activity disruption in PD, and provides preliminary evidence that rest-activity rhythms are associated with motor symptom severity and H&Y Stage.

Accurately monitoring motor and non-motor symptoms as well as complications in people with Parkinson's disease (PD) is a major challenge, both during clinical management and when conducting clinical trials investigating new treatments. A variety of strategies have been relied upon including questionnaires, motor diaries, and the serial administration of structured clinical exams like part III of the MDS-UPDRS. To evaluate the potential use of mobile and wearable technologies in clinical trials of new pharmacotherapies targeting PD symptoms, we carried out a project (project BlueSky) encompassing four clinical studies, in which 60 healthy volunteers (aged 23-69; 33 females) and 95 people with PD (aged 42-80; 37 females; years since diagnosis 1-24 years; Hoehn and Yahr 1-3) participated and were monitored in either a laboratory environment, a simulated apartment, or at home and in the community. In this paper, we investigated (i) the utility and reliability of self-reports for describing motor fluctuations; (ii) the agreement between participants and clinical raters on the presence of motor complications; (iii) the ability of video raters to accurately assess motor symptoms, and (iv) the dynamics of tremor, dyskinesia, and bradykinesia as they evolve over the medication cycle. Future papers will explore methods for estimating symptom severity based on sensor data. We found that 38% of participants who were asked to complete an electronic motor diary at home missed ~25% of total possible entries and otherwise made entries with an average delay of >4 h. During clinical evaluations by PD specialists, self-reports of dyskinesia were marked by ~35% false negatives and 15% false positives. Compared with live evaluation, the video evaluation of part III of the MDS-UPDRS significantly underestimated the subtle features of tremor and extremity bradykinesia, suggesting that these aspects of the disease may be underappreciated during remote assessments. On the other hand, live and video raters agreed on aspects of postural instability and gait. Introduction: Informed consent is a continuous and dynamic process. It is a crucial part of healthcare procedures that becomes more complex in a pediatric clinical practice, where parents must make decisions for their children., Objectives: The aim of this implementation project was to evaluate the current practice and implement the best practice related to obtaining informed consent in a children's hospital in Tabriz, Iran., Methods: A clinical audit was undertaken using the JBI Practical Application of Clinical Evidence System (JBI PACES) tool. Five audit criteria representing the best-practice recommendations for informed consent were used. A baseline audit was conducted, followed by the implementation of multiple strategies. The project was finalized with a follow-up audit to determine change in practice., Results: The compliance rate of all criteria improved from baseline to follow-up audit. Criteria 1 (obtaining informed consent prior to all nursing procedures) and 5 (provision of information related to the necessity of the treatment) reached 97% compliance in the follow-up cycle. Criterion 4 (provision of information related to the nature and effect of the treatment) achieved 74% compliance. Both criteria 2 and 3 (provision of information related to alternative treatments and consequences of refusing treatment) reached 57% in the follow-up cycle. To improve compliance, meetings were organized with the heads of departments, nurses and residents regarding informed consent. Also, staff were encouraged to report cases where informed consent was not obtained., Conclusion: The audit results indicated an improvement in obtaining informed consent in the included departments. The interventions that were employed can facilitate the implementation of evidence into clinical practice.

Objectives: In 2010, South Africa (SA) hosted the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) World Cup (soccer). Emergency Medical Services (EMS) used the SA mass gathering medicine (MGM) resource model to predict resource allocation. This study analyzed data from the World Cup and compared them with the resource allocation predicted by the SA mass gathering model., Methods: Prospectively, data were collected from patient contacts at 9 venues across the Western Cape province of South Africa. Required resources were based on the number of patients seeking basic life support (BLS), intermediate life support (ILS), and advanced life support (ALS). Overall patient presentation rates (PPRs) and transport to hospital rates (TTHRs) were also calculated., Results: BLS services were required for 78.4% (n = 1279) of patients and were consistently overestimated using the SA mass gathering model. ILS services were required for 14.0% (n = 228), and ALS services were required for 3.1% (n = 51) of patients. Both ILS and ALS services, and TTHR were underestimated at smaller venues., Conclusions: The MGM predictive model overestimated BLS requirements and inconsistently predicted ILS and ALS requirements. MGM resource models, which are heavily based on predicted attendance levels, have inherent limitations, which may be improved by using research-based outcomes.

Cholesterol plays a key role in the synthesis of bile acids and steroid hormones in the human body. However, excessively high levels are usually implicated in cardiovascular diseases. For this reason, it is essential to monitor exposure to high levels of it in products meant for human consumption, and this calls for the need to develop analytical methods to detect them. The use of Liebermann-Burchard reaction in this study has been explored to develop a simple, reliable, and robust quantitative colorimetric method to assay cholesterol, and hence provide a good alternative to chromatographic methods. The developed method was validated and used to determine the contents of cholesterol in selected dairy products on the Kumasi Metropolis market. The method demonstrated a good linearity ( R 2 = 0.996) over concentration range of 0.01-0.08 mg/ml. It was also shown to be precise and robust. The limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) were determined to be 0.00430 mg/ml and 0.01304 mg/ml, respectively. Ten selected brands of canned milk (B1-B5) and fresh yoghurt products (A1-A5) were then assayed using the developed method. The results showed that three products from each category had cholesterol contents above the allowable content of 5 mg/100 g in dairy products. The study thus has proposed a simple colorimetric method that can be adopted by dairy products manufacturing facilities to rapidly determine cholesterol contents during manufacturing in order to monitor the safe consumption of their products, and eliminate or minimize possible future health hazards., Competing Interests: The authors declare that they have no conflicts of interest., (Copyright © 2019 Joseph K. Background: A huge number of people living with HIV/AIDS lives in developing countries. Thus, strengthening health systems in these countries is a prerequisite for improving disease prevention and care. After three decades of HIV/AIDS policy-making in Iran, conducting a comprehensive analysis on the policy process seems to be essential. In the present study, we aimed to analyse the HIV/AIDS policy-making process in Iran from 1986 to 2016., Methods: This was a theory-based, multi-method and retrospective study. Interviewing of key informants and review of policy documents were concurrently conducted to identify and include further key informants (39 participants) and documents in the study. Framework analysis was used to analyse data., Results: The mean age of participants working in HIV/AIDS policy-making was of 48 years and participants had a mean of 14 years of working experience. Findings were categorized as contextual factors, content of HIV/AIDS policies, actors involved in the policy process, and evidence use in the policy process. Contextual effective factors on the HIV/AIDS policy-making process were categorized into five major themes, namely situational factors, structural-managerial factors, socioeconomic factors, political and legal factors, and international factors. The HIV/AIDS phenomenon in Iran was identified to be deeply rooted in the culture and traditions of society. The HIV/AIDS policy content has, recently, been crystallized in the national strategic plans and harm reduction policies of the country. The policy process has been conducted with a solely governmental top-down approach and is now suffering from poor evidence and lack of sufficient consideration of contextual factors., Conclusions: There is a great need for change in the approach of government towards the issue and to increase the participation of non-governmental sectors and civil society in the policy process.

Introduction: The Movement Disorder Society's Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (MDS-UPDRS) is the current gold standard means of assessing disease state in Parkinson's disease (PD). Objective measures in the form of wearable sensors have the potential to improve our ability to monitor symptomology in PD, but numerous methodological challenges remain, including integration into the MDS-UPDRS. We applied a structured video coding scheme to temporally quantify clinical, scripted, motor tasks in the MDS-UPDRS for the alignment and integration of objective measures collected in parallel., Methods: 25 PD subjects completed two video-recorded MDS-UPDRS administrations. Visual cues of task performance reliably identifiable in video recordings were used to construct a structured video coding scheme. Postural transitions were also defined and coded. Videos were independently coded by two trained non-expert coders and a third expert coder to derive indices of inter-rater agreement., Results: 50 videos of MDS-UPDRS performance were fully coded. Non-expert coders achieved a high level of agreement (Cohen's κ > 0.8) on all postural transitions and scripted motor tasks except for Postural Stability (κ = 0.617); this level of agreement was largely maintained even when more stringent thresholds for agreement were applied. Durations coded by non-expert coders and expert coders were significantly different (p < 0.05) for only Postural Stability and Rigidity, Left Upper Limb., Conclusions: Non-expert coders consistently and accurately quantified discrete behavioral components of the MDS-UPDRS using a structured video coding scheme; this represents a novel, promising approach for integrating objective and clinical measures into unified, longitudinal datasets., (Copyright © 2018. Objective: The Scale for the Assessment and Rating of Ataxia (SARA) is a semi-quantitative assessment used to evaluate ataxia. The goal of these studies was to assess and evaluate the utility of this instrument in a Healthy Volunteer (HV) group and subjects with Schizophrenia (SCZ)., Methods: Two studies were completed to collect SARA data, in a HV group and in a stable SCZ group. 177 HVs (18-65 years) and 16 SCZs (18-58 years) provided written consent and were assessed using the SARA. Of 177 HV subjects, 88 had 2 SARA assessments (within 2 days of initial visit) while all 16 SCZ had 3 SARA assessments (within 14 days of initial visit)., Results: For the HV group, the mean score ± Std for the SARA on visit-1 was 0.39 ± 0.72, and 0.34 ± 0.64 for visit-2. The Pearson correlation coefficient between visit-1 and visit-2 was 0.7486 and an ICC of 0.743. For the SCZ group, the mean score for the SARA was 0.63 ± 0.65 on visit-1, 0.84 ± 1.19 on visit-2, and 0.84 ± 0.94 on visit-3. The Pearson correlation coefficient between visit-1 and visit-2 was 0.6545, between visit-1 and visit-3 was 0.6635 and between visit-2 and visit-3 was 0.7613 and an ICC of 0.650. There was no significant difference in baseline SARA scores between the HV and SCZ group p = .063. A statistically significant positive association between age and total SARA scores was observed in HV (r = 0.345) and SCZ (r = 0.676)., Conclusions: A strong association was observed in both the HV and SCZ groups in the reassessment of signs of ataxia using the SARA scale. Background: Cancer is a significant problem in modern medicine, also is the most common cause of death after cardiovascular diseases, and in need of targeted drug release. Although, chemotherapy is an important candidate in cancer treatment, but it has many side effects on healthy tissues of the body. Therefore, Nano technology is used for specific function, by the least side effects and damage to normal cells. Materials and method: In this study, the pharmacological properties of PEGylated Nano-niosomal Gingerol was examined. Noisome were prepared using reverse phase evaporation method, which contains specific proportion of cholesterol, span60 and polyethylene glycol. Then, PEGylated the prepared formulation by PEG6600. The amount of release and encapsulation of the drug was investigated. The percentage of remains of cancer cell line T47D treated with PEGylated niosomal Gingerol. Results: The average diameter of the nanoparticles, size distribution and zeta potential were reported for PEGylated niosomal sample 35.65 nm, 0.17 and 21 mv, and for PEGylated niosomal drug sample 256.9 nm, 0.23 and 28 mv, respectively. The amount of OD for encapsulated drug was 0.198, also the amount of concentration of the drug which is not encapsulated, was 0.77947 μl of the drug per ml. This value of encapsulated drug was 76.38 percent. Conclusion: The results showed that IC50 of the formulation of PEGylated nanoniosomal Gingerol is less than the standard drug. It seems, the cause of this phenomenon is due to the effect of Polyethylene glycol, in more stability and slower drug release, in the formulation of PEGylated niosome. Also, Polyethylene glycol makes increase in the drug dealing and its greater influence with the target cell. In this study, more than 76% of the Gingerol drug in PEGylated nanoniosomal formulation were enclose. Due to frequent childbirth, heavy lifting and the structure of the lives of rural women in Shahrekord region, Iran, cystocele and rectocele are of the main medical problems of the women in this area and for its correction, vaginal reconstructive surgery is needed which causes infection. The purpose of this study was to identify the bacteria causing infection after vaginal reconstructive surgery and performing antibiogram to help these patients for faster recovery. Patients enrolled this study were 92 who had undergone previous vaginal reconstructive surgery and now had infection. After examination, the group of patients taking antibiotics (n = 26) were excluded and the remaining 66 completed the study questionnaire. A gynecologist performed sampling; related tests (aerobic and anaerobic culture using an anaerobic culture gas pack jar and type A which provides absolute anaerobic conditions) were performed; antimicrobial susceptibility testing using Disk Diffusion Method was carried out; and the results were recorded. All the positive samples were polymicrobial. Gardnerella vaginalis in 20 cases (31%), peptostreptococci and anaerobic cocci in 9 cases (13.6%), staphylococcus aureus in 8 cases (9.1%), bacteroides and fusobacterium in 7 cases (10.6%), streptococcus group B in 4 cases (6%), yeast cells in 11 cases (16.6%) and Trichomonas vaginalis in wet mount of 4 (6%) existed. Anaerobic bacteria showed 85% sensitivity to clindamycin, 82% to chloramphenicol, 85% sensitivity to ceftizoxime and 45% to penicillin. Facultative anaerobic bacteria showed a sensitivity rate of 90% to ceftizoxime, chloramphenicol and cephalothin. According to our findings, the rate of vaginal bacterial infection in women with vaginal reconstructive surgery has increased; from which, infections with anaerobic bacteria origins have increased dramatically. We recommend antibiotic prophylaxis prior to genital reconstructive surgeries.

Background: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCO) is recognized as the most common endocrinopathy in female. Chemerin is a novel adipocytokine that is expressed in ovary and upregulated in adipose tissue of obese, PCO patients. To date there is no report about the regulation of ovarian chemerin gene expression after PCO induction and treatment by insulin sensitizing drugs including pioglitazone and metformin. Thirty female rats were divided into six experimental groups with five rats in each group including control group, PCO group (i.m injection of 4 mg estradiol benzoate for 40 days), metformin treated (200 mg/kg/day for 21 days), pioglitazone treated (20 mg/kg/day, for 21 days), PCO + metformin and PCO + pioglitazone. PCO was detected by microscopic observation of vaginal smear and treatment by metformin and pioglitazone was initiated one week after that. Ovarian chemerin expression was analyzed by real time PCR and western blotting., Results: Our results demonstrated that PCO induction resulted in elevation of chemerin mRNA and protein levels in ovary in concomitant with incidence of insulin resistance and increasing androgen and progesterone production. We observed that metformin and pioglitazone attenuated ovarian chemerin expression and improved insulin resistance and abnormal steroid production in PCO rats., Conclusion: Based on data presented here we concluded that alteration of ovarian chemerin expression may has important role in PCO development and manipulation of chemerin expression or signaling by pioglitazone or metformin can be a novel therapeutic mechanism in the treatment of PCO patients by these drugs.

Context: Evidence suggests that diets with high contents of cholesterol will increase serum lipoproteins and apolipoproteins, thereby increase risk of atherosclerosis. According to literature, some plants show hypolipidemic, hypocholestrolemic, and antiatherosclerotic activities., Aims: In this study, antiatherosclerotic effect of Hypericum perforatum hydroalcoholic extract on hypercholesterolemic rabbits was compared with that of lovastatin., Materials and Methods: Twenty five mature male New Zealand rabbits were randomly divided into five groups of five and were fed for 60 days as follows: Standard diet (GroupI), standard diet and hydroalcoholic extract of Hypericum perforatum (150 mg/kg daily)(GroupII), standard diet, hydroalcoholic extract of Hypericum perforatum (150 mg/ kg daily) and cholesterol (1% of food content) (Group III), standard diet and cholesterol (1% of food content)(GroupIV), and finally standard diet, lovastatin (10 mg/kg), and cholesterol (1% of foodcontent) (GroupV)., Results: Hypericum perforatum extract significantly decreased the levels of apolipoprotein B(apoB), apolipoprotein B/apolipoprotein A (apoB/apoA), triglyceride, cholesterol, low density lipoprotein cholesterol, oxidized LDL, malondialdehyde, and C-reactive protein (CRP) as well as atherosclerosis index, and increased high density lipoprotein and apoA in rabbits of Group III compared to the rabbits of Group IV. The effect of Hypericum perforatum extract in decreasing the level of some biochemical factors like apoB, apoB/apoA, and CRP was meaningfully more than that of lovastatin. Histopathological findings confirmed that hydroalcoholic extract of Hypericum perforatum restricted the atherosclerotic lesions., Conclusions: This study indicates that hydroalcoholic extract of Hypericum perforatum possesses hypolipidemic and anti-atherosclerotic effects and could be beneficial in the management of hyperlipidemia and atherosclerosis.

Background: The antihypercholesterolemic and antiatherogenic effect of hydroalcoholic extracts of Amaranthus caudatus L (A. caudatus). on regression of atherosclerosis in experimental rabbits maintained on a high cholesterol diet., Methods: Twenty five rabbits were randomly divided into five groups of five each and treated 75 days as follows: Group I: normal diet(ND), Group II: Hypercholesterolemic diet (HCD) for 45 days; Group III: Hypercholesterolemic diet (HCD) for 75 days, Group IV and V: HCD for 45 days and then normal diet and normal diet + A. caudatus(150 mg·kg day) respectively for an additional 30 days(regression period). Blood samples were collected before (0 time) and after 45 days and 75 days of experimental diets for measurement of biochemical factors. The aortas were removed at the end of the study for assessment of atherosclerotic plaques., Results: In regression period dietary use of A. caudatus in group V significantly decreased total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, malondialdehyde, C-reactive protein while apolipoproteinA and HDL-cholesterol was significantly increased compared to group IV. The atherosclerotic area was significantly decreased in group V. Whereas, the animals that in regression period received only normal diet showed no regression but rather progression of atherosclerosis., Conclusion: These results thus suggest that hydroalcoholic extracts of A. caudatus can reduce risk factors and cause regression of fatty lesions in aorta.
