Soft chemistry techniques, such as ion exchange, hold great potential for the development of battery electrode materials that cannot be stabilized via conventional equilibrium synthesis methods. Nevertheless, the intricate mechanisms governing ion exchange remain elusive. Herein, we investigate the evolution of the long-range and local structure, as well as the ion (de)intercalation mechanism during electrochemical Li-to-Na ion exchange initiated from an O3-type lithium-layered oxide cathode. The in situ -formed mixed-cation electrolyte leads to competitive intercalation of Li and Na ions. While Li ion intercalation predominates at the beginning of initial discharge, Na ion cointercalation into a different layer results in ion redistribution and phase separation, with the emergence of a P3-Na phase alongside an O3-Li phase. Further, this study spatially resolves the heterogeneous nature of electrochemical ion exchange reactions within individual particles and provides insights into the correlations between local Ni redox processes and phase separation. Overall, electrochemical ion exchange leads to a mixed-phase cathode and alters its reaction kinetics. Those findings have important implications for the development of new metastable materials for renewable energy devices and ion separation applications.

Hyperparameter optimization (HPO) has been well-developed and evolved into a well-established research topic over the decades. With the success and wide application of deep learning, HPO has garnered increased attention, particularly within the realm of machine learning model training and inference. The primary objective is to mitigate the challenges associated with manual hyperparameter tuning, which can be ad-hoc, reliant on human expertise, and consequently hinders reproducibility while inflating deployment costs. Recognizing the growing significance of HPO, this paper surveyed classical HPO methods, approaches for accelerating the optimization process, HPO in an online setting (dynamic algorithm configuration, DAC), and when there is more than one objective to optimize (multi-objective HPO). Acceleration strategies were categorized into multi-fidelity, bandit-based, and early stopping; DAC algorithms encompassed gradient-based, population-based, and reinforcement learning-based methods; multi-objective HPO can be approached via scalarization, metaheuristics, and model-based algorithms tailored for multi-objective situation. A tabulated overview of popular frameworks and tools for HPO was provided, catering to the interests of practitioners.

The reported study compared the impact of four influence strategies (agency assignment, enhanced active choice, deviance regulation marking, and temporal framing) on English- and Spanish-speaking parents' reported intention to vaccinate their children for HPV. An online experiment was conducted to examine the impact of the strategies. In a fractional factorial design, participating parents (N = 1663) were exposed to combinations of influence strategies in text messages presented as reminders they might receive from a healthcare provider about their child's eligibility for the vaccine series. The results indicated small but significant impacts of agency assignment, enhanced active choice, and deviance regulation marking on parents' reported vaccination intentions. The study adds to the research literature on HPV vaccination communication in two important respects. First, it demonstrated how incorporating evidence-based influence strategies into reminder messages can increase parents' vaccination intentions, an important precursor and predictor of actual vaccine uptake. Second, it sets an important precedent by examining the effects of influence strategies on vaccination intentions across different languages.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi play an important role in plant nutrient absorption and stress resistance. AM fungal spore-associated bacteria are essential for mycorrhizal colonization, but their responses to environmental changes remain largely unknown. We collected surface soil samples from a Chinese fir plantation in both summer and winter to investigate the responses of AM fungal morphological traits and spore-associated bacterial communities to simulated nitrogen deposition (40 kg N·hm -2 ·a -1 addition) and drought (-50% precipitation exclusion). Our results showed that nitrogen addition and precipitation exclusion significantly affected AM fungal spore density and extraradical hyphal length, respectively. AM fungal intraradical colonization rate, extraradical hyphal length and spore density were significantly differed between the two seasons. Compared to control (no nitrogen addition and no precipitation exclusion treatment), both nitrogen addition and precipitation exclusion significantly reduced spore density in winter, while precipitation exclusion alone and the combined nitrogen addition and precipitation exclusion significantly increased extraradical hyphal length in summer. The dominant spore-associated bacterial phyla were Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria, Actinobacteria, Chloroflexi, and Planctomycetes. Nitrogen addition and precipitation exclusion did not affect the diversity of spore-associated bacteria. However, the combined nitrogen addition and precipitation exclusion treatment altered the composition of the bacterial community, with significant variations between the two seasons. The spore-associated bacterial diversity was significantly higher and community variability (or turnover) was lower during summer than winter. Soil total nitrogen, nitrate nitrogen and dissolved organic carbon were important factors influencing the bacterial community composition. In all, the effects of nitrogen addition and precipitation exclusion on the morphological traits of AM fungi are seasonally dependent. The combination of nitrogen addition and precipitation exclusion has a significant impact on AM fungal spore-associated bacterial community structure.

Antibiotic resistance is a serious health threat that healthcare providers must communicate to the public to decelerate its development. Prior studies have shown that linguistic agency assignment is a viable strategy to frame health threats in a way that both conveys their severity and preserves audience members' sense of self-efficacy. In the current study, we examined this messaging strategy in the context of antibiotic resistance. Individuals' perceptions of the threat and efficacy, behavioral intentions, fear appeals, and evaluations of the educational fact sheet were explored. Participants ( N  = 449) were randomly assigned to one of the eight conditions crossing threat agency (bacteria/human), temporal agency (antibiotic resistance/human) and imagery agency (taking antibiotics/antibiotics). The results revealed that individuals' perceived severity, susceptibility, response efficacy, and self-efficacy were positively associated with their intentions to use antibiotics judiciously. The interaction effects between perceived threat and efficacy predicted behavioral intentions and the persuasiveness of the fact sheet. Relative to bacteria threat agency, human agency assignment led to significantly higher behavioral intentions. Also, readers of the human temporal agency condition reported higher persuasiveness toward the fact sheet than readers of the resistance condition. The implications, limitations, and future research directions of the study are discussed.

Objective: To evaluate the prospective association between cumulative resting heart rate (cumRHR) and rapid renal function decline (RRFD) in a cohort of individuals aged 60 and older., Methods: In the Tianjin Chronic Kidney Disease Cohort Study, the individuals who underwent three consecutive physical examinations between 2014 and 2017, with estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) greater than 60 mL/min per 1.73 m 2 and aged 60 years or older were enrolled. A total of 27,564 patients were prospectively followed up from January 1, 2017 to December 31, 2020. The 3-year cumRHR was calculated. The primary outcome was RRFD, defined as an annualized decline in eGFR of 5 mL/min per 1.73 m 2 or greater. Logistic and restricted spline regression models and subgroup analysis were used to investigate the association of cumRHR with RRFD after adjusting for all confounders., Results: During a median follow-up of 3.2 years, a total of 4,347 (15.77%) subjects developed RRFD. In fully-adjusted models, compared with the lowest quartile of cumRHR, the odds ratio (OR) for the highest was 1.44 (1.28-1.61), P < 0.001. Furthermore, each 1-standard deviation (27.97 beats/min per year) increment in cumRHR was associated with a 17% ( P < 0.001) increased risk of RRFD, with a linear positive correlation ( P for non-linear = 0.803). Participants with a 3-year cumRHR ≥ 207 (beats/min) * year (equivalent to ≥ 69 beats/min per year in 3 years) were found to be at a higher risk of RRFD., Conclusions: The cumRHR is significantly associated with a higher risk of RRFD among older adults. Current induced spin-orbit torque (SOT) holds great promise for next generation magnetic-memory technology. Field-free SOT switching of perpendicular magnetization requires the breaking of in-plane symmetry, which can be artificially introduced by external magnetic field, exchange coupling or device asymmetry. Recently it has been shown that the exploitation of inherent crystal symmetry offers a simple and potentially efficient route towards field-free switching. However, applying this approach to the benchmark SOT materials such as ferromagnets and heavy metals is challenging. Here, we present a strategy to break the in-plane symmetry of Pt/Co heterostructures by designing the orientation of Burgers vectors of dislocations. We show that the lattice of Pt/Co is tilted by about 1.2° when the Burgers vector has an out-of-plane component. Consequently, a tilted magnetic easy axis is induced and can be tuned from nearly in-plane to out-of-plane, enabling the field-free SOT switching of perpendicular magnetization components at room temperature with a relatively low current density (~10 11  A/m 2 ) and excellent stability (> 10 4 cycles). Heterogeneities in structure and polarization have been employed to enhance the energy storage properties of ferroelectric films. The presence of nonpolar phases, however, weakens the net polarization. Here, we achieve a slush-like polar state with fine domains of different ferroelectric polar phases by narrowing the large combinatorial space of likely candidates using machine learning methods. The formation of the slush-like polar state at the nanoscale in cation-doped BaTiO 3 films is simulated by phase field simulation and confirmed by aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy. The large polarization and the delayed polarization saturation lead to greatly enhanced energy density of 80 J/cm 3 and transfer efficiency of 85% over a wide temperature range. Such a data-driven design recipe for a slush-like polar state is generally applicable to quickly optimize functionalities of ferroelectric materials.

Root-associated fungi play a vital role in maintaining nutrient absorption and health of host plants. To compare the responses of root-associated fungal community structures to nitrogen (N) and/or phosphorus (P) additions across differential mycorrhizal types, we collected roots of nine plant species belonging to three mycorrhizal types (arbuscular mycorrhiza, ectomycorrhiza, and ericoid mycorrhiza) under control and N and/or P addition treatments from a subtropical forest, and detected the diversity and community composition of fungi inhabiting roots through the high-throughput sequencing technique. The results showed that root-associated fungal communities of all nine plant species were mainly composed of Basidiomycota and Ascomycota. The relative abundance of Ascomycota and Basidiomycota was significantly lower and higher under the P addition than that under control, respectively. The relative abundance of Ascomycota of ericoid mycorrhizal trees was significantly higher than those of arbuscular mycorrhizal and ectomycorrhizal trees, while the relative abundance of Basidiomycota was significantly lower than the other two mycorrhizal types. Compared with the control, P addition significantly reduced the α-diversity and changed community composition of root-associated fungi across different mycorrhizal plant types, while no effect of N addition or mycorrhizal type was observed. Compared with the control and N addition treatments, NP addition caused root-associated fungal communities of all plants becoming integrally divergent. In addition, the fungal communities of ectomycorrhizal mycorrhizal trees became apparently convergent in comparison with those of arbuscular and ericoid mycorrhizal trees under the NP addition. Collectively, our results highlighted that P was a critical factor influencing community structures of tree root-associated fungi in subtropical forest soils. This study would enhance our understanding of the responses and maintenance mechanisms of plant root-associated fungal diversity under global environmental changes in the subtropical region.

Occupational exposure to contaminants created by electronic manufacturing process is not well characterized. The aim of this study was to carry out risk assessments of exposure to welding fume and airborne heavy metals (HMs) in electronic manufacturing workshops. Seventy-six air samples were collected from five sites in Hangzhou, China. In welding workshops, the most abundant contaminant found was welding fume, followed by Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Pb, Cd, and Cr. The concentration of Mn was positively correlated with Fe (r = 0.906). When compared with non-welding workshops, the Fe content in the air of welding workshops increased significantly (P < 0.05), while the Cu content decreased significantly (P < 0.05). Singapore semi-quantitative health risk assessment model and the United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) inhalation risk assessment model were applied to assess the occupational exposure. In welding workshops, the levels of 8-h time weighted average (8 h-TWA) calculated for welding fume (range 0.288 ~ 6.281 mg/m 3 ), Mn (range Nd ~ 0.829 mg/m 3 ), and Fe (range 0.027 ~ 2.234 mg/m 3 ) partly exceeded the permissible limits. While, in non-welding workshops, the average of 8 h-TWA for Cu (0.411 mg/m 3 ) was higher than the limit. The risk rates (RR) assessed for Pb (2.4 vs 1.7), Mn (2.0 vs 1.4), and Fe (1.4 vs 1.0) were higher in welding workshops than that in non-welding workshops, but Cu (1.0 vs 2.2) were lower. The mean excess lifetime cancer risks (ELCR) in welding (5.59E - 06 per 1000 people) and non-welding (1.88E - 06 per 1000 people) workshops were acceptable. The mean non-cancer risk (HQ) estimated for Mn was greater than 10 in both welding (HQ = 164) and non-welding (HQ = 11.1) workshops. These results indicate that there was a risk of occupational exposure implication in the electronic manufacturing workshops. Reducing contaminant exposure through engineering controls and management strategies, such as efficient ventilation and reducing exposure hours, is thus suggested., (© 2023. The anomalous Hall effect (AHE) is a quantum coherent transport phenomenon that conventionally vanishes at elevated temperatures because of thermal dephasing. Therefore, it is puzzling that the AHE can survive in heavy metal (HM)/antiferromagnetic (AFM) insulator (AFMI) heterostructures at high temperatures yet disappears at low temperatures. In this paper, an unconventional high-temperature AHE in HM/AFMI is observed only around the Néel temperature of AFM, with large anomalous Hall resistivity up to 40 nΩ cm is reported. This mechanism is attributed to the emergence of a noncollinear AFM spin texture with a non-zero net topological charge. Atomistic spin dynamics simulation shows that such a unique spin texture can be stabilized by the subtle interplay among the collinear AFM exchange coupling, interfacial Dyzaloshinski-Moriya interaction, thermal fluctuation, and bias magnetic field., (© 2023 The Authors. Self-assembled systems have recently attracted extensive attention because they can display a wide range of phase morphologies in nanocomposites, providing a new arena to explore novel phenomena. Among these morphologies, a bicontinuous structure is highly desirable based on its high interface-to-volume ratio and 3D interconnectivity. A bicontinuous nickel oxide (NiO) and tin dioxide (SnO 2 ) heteroepitaxial nanocomposite is revealed here. By controlling their concentration, we fabricated tuneable self-assembled nanostructures from pillars to bicontinuous structures, as evidenced by TEM-energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy with a tortuous compositional distribution. The experimentally observed growth modes are consistent with predictions by first-principles calculations. Phase-field simulations are performed to understand 3D microstructure formation and extract key thermodynamic parameters for predicting microstructure morphologies in SnO 2 :NiO nanocomposites of other concentrations. Furthermore, we demonstrate significantly enhanced photovoltaic properties in a bicontinuous SnO 2 :NiO nanocomposite macroscopically and microscopically. Fluorescent lamp manufacturing workers have been extensively exposed to mercury (Hg). Our aim was to assess their health risks using several approved occupational health risk assessment methods, and to find out which method was more suitable for identification of occupational health risks. Work locations, and air and urine samples were collected from 530 exposed workers in Zhejiang, China. Based on the calculated exposure doses, health risks and risk ratios (RRs) as health risk indices, were evaluated using: Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Australian, Romanian, Singaporean, International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM), and Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) methods. Among the workers, 86.0% had higher Hg levels than the Chinese occupational exposure limits of 0.02 mg/m3, and 16.7% urine samples were higher than the biological exposure limits of 35.0 μg/g·creatinine. Among workers at the injection, etc. locations, their average RRs, evaluated by the EPA, COSHH and Singaporean methods were 0.97, 0.76, and 0.60, respectively, and were significantly higher than the ICMM (0.39), Australian (0.30) and Romanian (0.29) methods. The RRs from the Singaporean method showed significant correlations with the urinary Hg levels ( P < 0.01). Relaxor ferroelectric-based energy storage systems are promising candidates for advanced applications as a result of their fast speed and high energy storage density. In the research field of ferroelectrics and relaxor ferroelectrics, the concept of solid solution is widely adopted to modify the overall properties and acquire superior performance. However, the combination between antiferroelectric and paraelectric materials was less studied and discussed. In this study, paraelectric barium hafnate (BaHfO 3 ) and antiferroelectric lead hafnate (PbHfO 3 ) are selected to demonstrate such a combination. A paraelectric to relaxor ferroelectric, to ferroelectric, and to antiferroelectric transition is observed by varying the composition x in the (Ba 1- x Pb x )HfO 3 solid solution from 0 to 100%. It is noteworthy that ferroelectric phases can be realized without primal ferroelectric material. This study creates an original solid solution system with a rich spectrum of competing phases and demonstrates an approach to design relaxor ferroelectrics for energy storage applications and beyond.

Narrowband terahertz (THz) radiation is crucial for high-resolution spectral identification, but a narrowband THz source driven by a femtosecond (fs) laser has remained scarce. Here, it is computationally predicted that a metal/dielectric/magnetoelastic heterostructure enables converting a fs laser pulse into a multicycle THz pulse with a narrow linewidth down to ∼1.5 GHz, which is in contrast to the single-cycle, broadband THz pulse from the existing fs-laser-excited emitters. It is shown that such narrowband THz pulse originates from the excitation and long-distance transport of THz spin waves in the magnetoelastic film, which can be enabled by a short strain pulse obtained from fs laser irradiation of the metal film when the thicknesses of the metal and magnetoelastic films both fall into a specific range. These results therefore reveal an approach to achieving optical generation of narrowband THz pulse based on heterostructure design, which also has implications in the design of THz magnonic devices.

Room-temperature skyrmions in magnetic multilayers are considered to be promising candidates for the next-generation spintronic devices. Several approaches have been developed to control skyrmions, but they either cause significant heat dissipation or require ultrahigh electric fields near the breakdown threshold. Here, we demonstrate electric-field control of skyrmions through strain-mediated magnetoelectric coupling in ferromagnetic/ferroelectric multiferroic heterostructures. We show the process of non-volatile creation of multiple skyrmions, reversible deformation and annihilation of a single skyrmion by performing magnetic force microscopy with in situ electric fields. Strain-induced changes in perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction strength are characterized experimentally. These experimental results, together with micromagnetic simulations, demonstrate that strain-mediated magnetoelectric coupling (via strain-induced changes in both the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction is responsible for the observed electric-field control of skyrmions. Our work provides a platform to investigate electric-field control of skyrmions in multiferroic heterostructures and paves the way towards more energy-efficient skyrmion-based spintronics.

Purpose: This study aims to assess the effectiveness of the 3Shape TRIOS intraoral scanner (IOS) in student crown preparation evaluation., Design: Students were tasked to perform a full metal crown preparation on the upper left first molar on a patient simulator within 45 minutes. Marginal Width, Occlusal Reduction, Presence of Undercuts, Taper, Planes of Reduction, Line Angles, Conformity to Gingival Contour, and Smoothness were evaluated via 3 assessment modes: (a) Conventional assessment by 2 supervisors; (b) Conventional assessment by students; (c) Digital assessment by students. Agreement between assessment modes was investigated using Kappa (κ), with a threshold set at κ > 0.4. Effectiveness of IOS for objective parameters was determined via physical verification, while that for subjective parameters was defined by agreement with the stricter supervisor grade., Results: Substantial agreement (κ = 0.631) was found between IOS measurement of Marginal Width and physical verification. Two of 5 subjective parameters met κ > 0.4 for agreement between IOS and the stricter supervisor grade. Agreement between supervisors ranged from slight (κ = 0.103) for Occlusal Reduction to Fair (κ = 0.399) for Marginal Width. Agreement between conventional assessments of supervisors and students ranged from less than chance (κ = -0.142) for Occlusal Reduction to moderate (κ = 0.577) for Line Angles. Agreement between conventional assessments of supervisors and digital assessments of students ranged from slight (κ = 0.130) for Planes of Reduction to moderate (κ = 0.538) for Line Angles., Conclusions: IOS may be used to overcome limitations in conventional assessment of objective parameters and some subjective parameters. Exploring the dynamic responses of a material is of importance to both understanding its fundamental physics at high frequencies and potential device applications. Here we develop a phase-field model for predicting the dynamics of ferroelectric materials and study the dynamic responses of ferroelectric domains and domain walls subjected to an ultrafast electric-field pulse. We discover a transition of domain evolution mechanisms from pure domain growth at a relatively low field to combined nucleation and growth of domains at a high field. We derive analytical models for the two regimes which allow us to extract the effective mass and damping coefficient of ferroelectric domain walls. The exhibition of two regimes for the ferroelectric domain dynamics at low and high electric fields is expected to be a general phenomenon that would appear for ferroic domains under other ultrafast stimuli. The present Letter also offers a general framework for studying domain dynamics and obtaining fundamental properties of domain walls and thus for manipulating the dynamic functionalities of ferroelectric materials.

Qufengtongluo (QFTL) decoction is an effective treatment for diabetic nephropathy (DN). However, the underlying molecular mechanism is still unclear. In this study, we try to investigate whether QFTL decoction acts via inhibiting PI3K/Akt signaling pathway. Twenty-four GK rats were randomly divided into 3 groups: blank group, sham-operated group, and QFTL group. After model establishment, rats in QFTL group were given QFTL decoction by gavage, while the rest were given pure water. During the 8-week intervention, 24 hr urinal protein was measured every 2-3 weeks. After intervention, kidneys were removed for pathological smear, quantitative real-time PCR, and western blotting to detect expression levels of p-PI3K, p-Akt, PTEN, TGF- β , PI3K mRNA, Akt mRNA, PTEN mRNA, and TGF- β mRNA. QFTL group showed a slighter degree of renal fibrosis in Masson and PASM staining and a greater reduction of 24 hr urinal protein than blank group. Compared to blank group, expression levels of p-PI3K, p-Akt, PI3K mRNA, and Akt mRNA were lower in QFTL group, while expression levels of PTEN and PTEN mRNA were higher. Besides, TGF- β was downregulated by QFTL decoction. In conclusion, this study suggests that QFTL decoction might inhibit PI3K/Akt signaling pathway via activating PTEN and inhibiting TGF- β .

Modeling the effective ion conductivities of heterogeneous solid electrolytes typically involves the use of a computer-generated microstructure consisting of randomly or uniformly oriented fillers in a matrix. However, the structural features of the filler/matrix interface, which critically determine the interface ion conductivity and the microstructure morphology, have not been considered during the microstructure generation. Using nanoporous β-Li 3 PS 4 electrolyte as an example, we develop a phase-field model that enables generating nanoporous microstructures of different porosities and connectivity patterns based on the depth and the energy of the surface (pore/electrolyte interface), both of which are predicted through density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Room-temperature effective ion conductivities of the generated microstructures are then calculated numerically, using DFT-estimated surface Li-ion conductivity (3.14 × 10 -3 S/cm) and experimentally measured bulk Li-ion conductivity (8.93 × 10 -7 S/cm) of β-Li 3 PS 4 as the inputs. We also use the generated microstructures to inform effective medium theories to rapidly predict the effective ion conductivity via analytical calculations. When porosity approaches the percolation threshold, both the numerical and analytical methods predict a significantly enhanced Li-ion conductivity (1.74 × 10 -4 S/cm) that is in good agreement with experimental data (1.64 × 10 -4 S/cm). The present phase-field based multiscale model is generally applicable to predict both the microstructure patterns and the effective properties of heterogeneous solid electrolytes.

Epitaxial III-V semiconductor heterostructures are key components in modern microelectronics, electro-optics, and optoelectronics. With superior semiconducting properties, halide perovskite materials are rising as promising candidates for coherent heterostructure devices. In this report, spinodal decomposition is proposed and experimentally implemented to produce epitaxial double heterostructures in halide perovskite system. Pristine epitaxial mixed halide perovskites rods and films were synthesized via van der Waals epitaxy by chemical vapor deposition method. At room temperature, photon was applied as a knob to regulate the kinetics of spinodal decomposition and classic coarsening. By this approach, halide perovskite double heterostructures were created carrying epitaxial interfaces and outstanding optical properties. Reduced Fröhlich electron-phonon coupling was discovered in coherent halide double heterostructure, which is hypothetically attributed to the classic phonon confinement effect widely existing in III-V double heterostructures. As a proof-of-concept, our results suggest that halide perovskite-based epitaxial heterostructures may be promising for high-performance and low-cost optoelectronics, electro-optics, and microelectronics. Thus, ultimately, for practical device applications, it may be worthy to pursue these heterostructures via conventional vapor phase epitaxy approaches widely practised in III-V field.

Objective: To analyze the outcomes of pregnancies in women with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and the risk factors affecting the outcomes., Methods: The data of SLE patients with pregnancy admitted from October, 2006 and September, 2015 were analyzed for assessing the maternal and fetal outcomes and complications. Their risk factors affecting the outcomes of the pregnancies were analyzed., Results: The 66 SLE patients (69 pregnancies) had a mean age at SLE diagnosis of 22.9 ∓ 5.1 years with a mean duration of SLE of 4.1∓3.6 years before pregnancy. Forty-five (65.2%) of the patients received oral medication for SLE treatment during pregnancy, and 44 (63.8%) were treated with prednisone and 19 (27.5%) were treated with hydroxychloroquine. The highest SLEDAI score was 6.8∓7.4 during pregnancy. The patients with moderate-to-severe disease activity had a higher rate of fetal loss (12 [54.5%] vs 12 [25.5%]) with a significantly lower birth weight of the newborns than those with remittent or mild disease (2073.0∓ 778.7 vs 2817.8∓533.7 g, P<0.05). The patients with moderate-to-severe disease activity also had higher rates of new-onset SLE (9 [40.9%] vs 6 [12.8%]), hypertension (12 [54.5%] vs 3 [6.4%]), active lupus nephritis (22 [100%] vs 4 [8.5%]), pneumonia (5 [22.7%] vs 2 [4.3%]), and renal insufficiency (8 [36.4%] vs 2 [4.3%]) compared with patients with remittent and mild disease (P<0.05). Active lupus nephritis (OR=6.10,95%CI: 1.43-25.96) was a significant predictor of adverse outcomes of the pregnancies., Conclusion: Fetal loss and maternal complications are common in patients with SLE in relation with the disease activity. Active lupus nephritis is a predictor for poor outcomes of pregnancies in SLE patients.

Background: Mastermind-like transcriptional coactivator 1(MAML1) is a transcriptional coregulator of activators in various signaling pathways. High MAML1 was associated with tumorigenesis, progression, and aggressiveness in various tumors. The role of MAML in Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC), however, has not been directly addressed. The present study was to determine its association with clinicopathological characteristics and prognosis of HCC patients., Materials and Methods: MAML1 expression at protein level in human HCC and normal liver tissues was detected by immunohistochemistry analysis, which was further validated by high-throughput sequencing data TCGA dataset at mRNA level. Then, the association of MAML1 expression with clinicopathological features of HCC patients was statistically analyzed., Results: Immunohistochemistry analysis found that MAML1 expression was significantly increased in HCC tissues compared with those in normal tissues (P=0.005). High MAML1 was dramatically associated with advanced clinical stage (P=0.019) and enhanced tumor invasion (P=0.019). The TCGA mRNA expression data showed that MAML1 was upregulated in HCC with young age (P=0.005). Kaplan-Meier survival curves revealed that HCC patients with high MAML1 levels had shorter survival (P=0.040). Furthermore, high MAML1 expression was an independent prognostic factor for HCC patients (HR 1.841, 95% CI 1.045-3.243; P=0.035)., Conclusions: Our data suggests that MAML1 may play an important role in tumor progression of HCC. The increased expression of MAML1 may efficiently predict poor overall survival in HCC patients, and it may be a potential prognostic marker of this malignancy., (© 2016 by the Association of Clinical Scientists, Inc.)

Strain is a novel approach to manipulating functionalities in correlated complex oxides. However, significant epitaxial strain can only be achieved in ultrathin layers. We show that, under direct lattice matching framework, large and uniform vertical strain up to 2% can be achieved to significantly modify the magnetic anisotropy, magnetism, and magnetotransport properties in heteroepitaxial nanoscaffold films, over a few hundred nanometers in thickness. Comprehensive designing principles of large vertical strain have been proposed. Phase-field simulations not only reveal the strain distribution but also suggest that the ultimate strain is related to the vertical interfacial area and interfacial dislocation density. By changing the nanoscaffold density and dimension, the strain and the magnetic properties can be tuned. The established correlation among the vertical interface-strain-properties in nanoscaffold films can consequently be used to tune other functionalities in a broad range of complex oxide films far beyond critical thickness.

Voltage-driven 180° magnetization switching provides a low-power alternative to current-driven magnetization switching widely used in spintronic devices. Here we computationally demonstrate a promising route to achieve voltage-driven in-plane 180° magnetization switching in a strain-mediated multiferroic heterostructure (e.g., a heterostructure consisting of an amorphous, slightly elliptical Co40Fe40B20 nanomagnet on top of a Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 film as an example). This 180° switching follows a unique precessional path all in the film plane, and is enabled by manipulating magnetization dynamics with fast, local piezostrains (rise/release time <0.1 ns) on the Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 film surface. Our analyses predict ultralow area energy consumption per switching (~0.03 J/m(2)), approximately three orders of magnitude smaller than that dissipated by current-driven magnetization switching. A fast overall switching time of about 2.3 ns is also demonstrated. Further reduction of energy consumption and switching time can be achieved by optimizing the structure and material selection. The present design provides an additional viable route to realizing low-power and high-speed spintronics.

Magnetic domain-wall motion driven by a voltage dissipates much less heat than by a current, but none of the existing reports have achieved speeds exceeding 100 m/s. Here phase-field and finite-element simulations were combined to study the dynamics of strain-mediated voltage-driven magnetic domain-wall motion in curved nanowires. Using a ring-shaped, rough-edged magnetic nanowire on top of a piezoelectric disk, we demonstrate a fast voltage-driven magnetic domain-wall motion with average velocity up to 550 m/s, which is comparable to current-driven wall velocity. An analytical theory is derived to describe the strain dependence of average magnetic domain-wall velocity. Moreover, one 180° domain-wall cycle around the ring dissipates an ultrasmall amount of heat, as small as 0.2 fJ, approximately 3 orders of magnitude smaller than those in current-driven cases. These findings suggest a new route toward developing high-speed, low-power-dissipation domain-wall spintronics.

Purely voltage-driven, repeatable magnetization reversal provides a tantalizing potential for the development of spintronic devices with a minimum amount of power consumption. Substantial progress has been made in this subject especially on magnetic/ferroelectric heterostructures. Here, we report the in situ observation of such phenomenon in a NiFe thin film grown directly on a rhombohedral Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)0.7Ti0.3O3(PMN-PT) ferroelectric crystal. Under a cyclic voltage applied perpendicular to the PMN-PT without a magnetic field, the local magnetization of NiFe can be repetitively reversed through an out-of-plane excursion and then back into the plane. Using phase field simulations we interpret magnetization reversal as a synergistic effect of the metastable ferroelastic switching in the PMN-PT and an electrically rotatable local exchange bias field arising from the heterogeneously distributed NiO clusters at the interface.

Multiferroic heterostructures can be synthesized by integrating monolithic ferroelectric and magnetic materials, with interfacial coupling between electric polarization and magnetization, through the exchange of elastic, electric, and magnetic energy. Although the nature of the interfaces remains to be unraveled, such cross coupling can be utilized to manipulate the magnetization (or polarization) with an electric (or magnetic) field, known as a converse (or direct) magnetoelectric effect. It can be exploited to significantly improve the performance of or/and add new functionalities to many existing or emerging devices such as memory devices, tunable microwave devices, sensors, etc. The exciting technological potential, along with the rich physical phenomena at the interface, has sparked intensive research on multiferroic heterostructures for more than a decade. Here, we summarize the most recent progresses in the fundamental principles and potential applications of the interface-based magnetoelectric effect in multiferroic heterostructures, and present our perspectives on some key issues that require further study in order to realize their practical device applications., (© 2015 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Voltage control of magnetism in multiferroic heterostructures provides a promising solution to the excessive heating in spintronic devices. Direct observation of voltage-modulated magnetic domain evolution dynamics is desirable for studying the mechanism of the voltage control of magnetism at mesoscale, but has remained challenging. Here we explored a characterization method for the dynamic in situ evolution of pure voltage modulated magnetic domains in the heterostructures by employing the scanning Kerr microscopy function in the magneto optic Kerr effect system. The local magnetization reorientation of a Ni/PMN-PT heterostructure were characterized under sweeping applied voltage on the PMN-PT single crystal, and the results show that the magnetization rotation angle in the local regions is much greater than that obtained from macroscopic magnetization hysteresis loops.

Magnetoelectric composite thin films hold substantial promise for applications in novel multifunctional devices. However, there are presently shortcomings for both the extensively studied bilayer epitaxial (2-2) and vertically architectured nanocomposite (1-3) film systems, restricting their applications. Here we design a novel growth strategy to fabricate an architectured nanocomposite heterostructure with magnetic quasiparticles (0) embedded in a ferroelectric film matrix (3) by alternately growing (2-2) and (1-3) layers within the film. The new heteroepitaxial films not only overcome the clamping effect from substrate, but also significantly suppress the leakage current paths through the ferromagnetic phase. We demonstrate, by focusing on switching characteristics of the piezoresponse, that the heterostructure shows magnetic field dependence of piezoelectricity due to the improved coupling enabled by good connectivity amongst the piezoelectric and magnetostrictive phases. This new architectured magnetoelectric heterostructures may open a new avenue for applications of magnetoelectric films in micro-devices.

If achieved, magnetization reversal purely with an electric field has the potential to revolutionize the spintronic devices that currently utilize power-dissipating currents. However, all existing proposals involve the use of a magnetic field. Here we use phase-field simulations to study the piezoelectric and magnetoelectric responses in a three-dimensional multiferroic nanostructure consisting of a perpendicularly magnetized nanomagnet with an in-plane long axis and a juxtaposed ferroelectric nanoisland. For the first time, we demonstrate a full reversal of perpendicular magnetization via successive precession and damping, driven purely by a perpendicular electric-field pulse of certain pulse duration across the nanoferroelectric. We discuss the materials selection and size dependence of both nanoferroelctrics and nanomagnets for experimental verification. These results offer new inspiration to the design of spintronic devices that simultaneously possess high density, high thermal stability, and high reliability.

A simple and fully gate-voltage-controlled magnetic random access memory is designed based on anisotropic magnetoresistance. This multiferroic memory device consists of just a single magnetic film grown on a ferroelectric layer with bistable in-plane anisotropic ferroelastic or piezo strains induced by out-of-plane voltages. The main bottlenecks limiting the practical applications of current magnetoresistive random access memory (MRAM) technology are its low storage density and high writing energy consumption. Although a number of proposals have been reported for voltage-controlled memory device in recent years, none of them simultaneously satisfy the important device attributes: high storage capacity, low power consumption and room temperature operation. Here we present, using phase-field simulations, a simple and new pathway towards high-performance MRAMs that display significant improvements over existing MRAM technologies or proposed concepts. The proposed nanoscale MRAM device simultaneously exhibits ultrahigh storage capacity of up to 88 Gb inch(-2), ultralow power dissipation as low as 0.16 fJ per bit and room temperature high-speed operation below 10 ns.

The conserved residue Gly47 of the chloroplast ATP synthase beta subunit was substituted with Leu, Arg, Ala and Glu by site-directed mutagenesis. This process generated the mutants epsilon G47L, epsilon G47R, epsilon G47A and epsilon G47E, respectively. All the beta variants showed lower inhibitory effects on the soluble CF1(-epsilon) Ca2+-ATPase compared with wild-type epsilon. In reduced conditions, epsilon G47E and epsilon G47R had a lower inhibitory effect on the oxidized CF1(-epsilon) Ca2+-ATPase compared with wild-type epsilon. In contrast, epsilon G47L and epsilon G47A increased the Ca2+-ATPase activity of soluble oxidized CF1(-epsilon). The replacement of Gly47 significantly impaired the interaction between the subunit epsilon and gamma in an in vitro binding assay? Further study showed that all epsilon variants were more effective in blocking proton leakage from the thylakoid membranes. This enhanced ATP synthesis of the chloroplast and restored ATP synthesis activity of the reconstituted membranes to a level that was more efficient than that achieved by wild-type epsilon. These results indicate that the conserved Gly47 residue of the epsilon subunit is very important for maintaining the structure and function of the epsilon subunit and may affect the interaction between the epsilon subunit, beta subunit of CF1 and subunit III of CFo, thereby regulating the ATP hydrolysis and synthesis, as well as the proton translocation role of the subunit III of CFo.

Five truncation mutants of chloroplast ATP synthase gamma subunit from spinach (Spinacia oleracea) lacking 8, 12, 16, 20 or 60 N-terminal amino acids were generated by PCR by a mutagenesis method. The recombinant gamma genes were overexpressed in Escherichia coli and assembled with alphabeta subunits into a native complex. The wild-type (WT) alphabetagamma assembly i.e. alphabetagammaWT exhibited high (Mg2+)-dependent and (Ca2+)-dependent ATP hydrolytic activity. Deletions of eight residues of the gamma subunit N-terminus caused a decrease in rates of ATP hydrolysis to 30% of that of the alphabetaWT assembly. Furthermore, only approximately 6% of ATP hydrolytic activity was retained with the sequential deletions of gamma subunit up to 20 residues compared with the activity of the alphabetaWT assembly. The inhibitory effect of the epsilon subunit on ATP hydrolysis of these alphabetagamma assemblies varied to a large extent. These observations indicate that the N-terminus of the gamma subunit is very important, together with other regions of the gamma subunit, in stabilization of the enzyme complex or during cooperative catalysis. In addition, the in vitro binding assay showed that the gamma subunit N-terminus is not a crucial region in binding of the epsilon subunit.

Mutagenesis was used to generate seven truncation mutants of the spinach (Spinacia oleracea) chloroplast ATP synthase delta subunit lacking 5, 11, 17, or 35 amino acid residues from the N-terminus or 3, 9, or 15 residues from the C-terminus. Interactions between these mutants and all other subunits of the chloroplast ATPase were investigated by a yeast two-hybrid system. The results indicate that the N-terminal deletions mainly affected interactions between the delta subunit and the other part of CF(1), but did not significantly affect interactions with the CF(0) sector. In contrast, C-terminal truncations of the delta subunit mainly affected its interaction with the CF(0) sector and caused little impairment in interactions with the other part of CF(1). The conformation of the delta subunit C-terminal domain seems to be more sensitive to the truncations, as shown by minimal expression driven by C-terminal deleted (nine residues) mutants. Further studies showed C-terminal truncations of the delta subunit greatly impaired its ability to restore cyclic photophosphorylation in NaBr vesicles, whereas N-terminal truncations had little effect on the ability of delta to plug the CF(0) channel. None of the mutants impaired ATP hydrolysis by CF(1).

This study investigated the effects of tetracycline on photophosphorylation, electron transport and P/O ratio of spinach chloroplasts. When chloroplast preparations were treated with low concentrations of tetracycline, non-cyclic and cyclic photophosphorylation activities increased, electron transport rates and P/O ratios improved, chloroplast ms-DLE also improved, and the Mg(2+)-ATPase activity of CF1 increased in comparison to the control. These results indicate that spinach chloroplasts are sensitive to tetracycline. Next, we used the fluorescence emission spectra of CF1 to examine the possible binding sites for tetracycline. The fluorescence emission spectra of CF1 treated with glutaraldehyde, NEM and TNBS, which interact with CF1 across its whole structure, at the γ subunit and at the β subunit, respectively, were compared with that of control CF1. The peak sites of the various fluorescence emission spectra were the same, but the peak values for CF1 treated with glutaraldehyde, NEM and TNBS were lower than that of control CF1. The peak value of CF1 treated with 50 µM tetracycline was very similar to that of CF1 treated with NEM. The above results indicate that the acting site of tetracycline may be at or near the γ subunit of CF1, and allows the creation of a model in which tetracycline binding strengthens the subunit interactions of ATP synthase, enlarges the proton motive force across the thylakoid membrane, and allows the excess proton motive force to increase ATP formation and improve the P/O ratio.

The chloroplast atpE genes from broad bean and maize were overexpressed in E.coli, respectively. After proper refolding and purification, two types of epsilon-subunit proteins with biological activity were obtained. When reconstituted with CF(1)(-epsilon)from different chloroplast ATPase, the effects of the reconstructed epsilon-subunit protein of maize CF(1) to the Ca(2+)-ATPase activity of epsilon-deficient CF(1) and to the proton leakage through CF(0) were markedly stronger than that of broad bean CF(1). It was also observed that the enhancing effect of maize epsilon-subunit protein to the chloroplast photophosphorylation activity was greater than that of broad bean epsilon-subunit protein. The results indicate that (1)the inhibition of epsilon-subunit is closely related to the its affinity with other parts of CF(1) (2)both functions of epsilon-subunit as inhibitor of ATPase and as proton pathway are closely linked. The circular dichroism was performed to show the differences in their secondary structure of these epsilon-subunit proteins based on the deduced primary sequences. Unconstrained analysis of the CD spectrum for the maize epsilon-subunit protein gave 22.6% alpha-helix, 30.6% beta-sheet, 9.3% beta-turn, and 37.7% unordered structure and 31.4%alpha-helix, 22.3% beta-sheet, 13.8% beta-turn, and 32.4% unordered structure for the epsilon-subunit from broad bean.

The effects of some residues in maize chloroplast epsilon subunit on its activity have been studied by site-directed mutagenesis. After replacing Thr-42 of epsilon subunit with Cys, Arg, Ile or Pro, and forming the mutant epsilonT42C, mutant epsilonT42R, mutant epsilonT42I and mutant epsilonT42P respectively, it was found that the mutant epsilonT42P protein could no longer be expressed, but expression of other epsilon subunit mutants was similar to that of wild type. Comparing the inhibitory potency of different mutants of epsilon subunit with that of the wild type, it was found that the inhibitory effects of epsilon subunit mutants epsilonT42C and epsilonT42R on ATPase activity were slightly higher than that of wild type, but the epsilonT42I protein strongly inhibited the Ca(2+)-ATPase activity.

The ninth KpnI fragment (about 4.0 kb) of broad bean chloroplast DNA contains the entire chloroplast atpE gene and atpB gene. This fragment was inserted into the pUC18 polylinker region, yielding plasmid pUK1. Southern hybridization using atpE gene from maize chloroplast as probe revealed that atpE gene encoding epsilon subunit of broad bean chloroplast was localized in 0.9 kb ClaI fragment of pUK1. The whole sequence of atpE gene of broad bean chloroplast was determined by using primer F and primer R of the polylinker region of pBluescript KS (+) DNA. The entire atpE gene of broad bean chloroplast was inserted into the polylinker region of vector pJLA505 to form recombinant plasmids pJLA505-atpE. The expression plasmid was transformed into E. coli DH5alpha cells which were then induced at 42 degrees. By analysis with SDS-PAGE, the product of interest accounted for more than 38% of total E. coli cell proteins. Identification of the expressed product by Western blot analysis demonstrated that it can react specifically with anti-epsilon serum of maize chloroplast CF(1). The expressed product aggregated to form insoluble inclusion bodies and was purified. The purified product had the same function as that of the native epsilon subunit.

The absorption spectrum and fluorescence emission spectrum of RS601 were found to keep the typical characteristics of those of the purple nonsulfide bacteria Rb. sphaeroides. Under illumination, methyl viologen was reduced by RS601 chromatophores in the presence of DCPIPH(2) as the electron donor, setting up a standard noncyclic electron transport. o-phenanthroline with I(50) of 1.0 mM inhibited the DCPIPH(2) right curved arrow MV electron transport. Antimycin A did not inhibit the DCPIPH(2) right curved arrow MV electron transport and had no I(50). The results suggested that the exact site where methyl viologen accepted electron should locate between the secondary electron acceptor, Q(B), and cyt b, but not at the Q(A) binding site as indicated before. The difference of electron transport between reduced sides of reaction centers of Rb. sphaeroides and Rs. rubrum was discussed.
