Removing pesticides from biological drinking water filters is challenging due to the difficulty in activating pesticide-degrading bacteria within the filters. Bioaugmented bacteria can alter the filter's microbiome, affecting its performance either positively or negatively, depending on the bacteria used and their interaction with native microbes. We demonstrate that adding specific bacteria strains can effectively remove recalcitrant pesticides, like metaldehyde, yielding compliance to regulatory standards for an extended period. Our experiments revealed that the Sphingobium CMET-H strain was particularly effective, consistently reducing metaldehyde concentrations to levels within regulatory compliance, significantly outperforming Acinetobacter calcoaceticus E1. This success is attributed to the superior acclimation and distribution of the Sphingobium strain within the filter bed, facilitating more efficient interactions with and degradation of the pesticide, even when present at lower population densities compared to Acinetobacter calcoaceticus E1. Furthermore, our study demonstrates that the addition of pesticide-degrading strains significantly impacts the filter's microbiome at various depths, despite these strains making up less than 1% of the total microbial community. The sequence in which these bacteria are introduced influences the system's ability to degrade pesticides effectively. This research shows the potential of carefully selected and dosed bioaugmented bacteria to improve the pesticide removal capabilities of water filtration systems, while also highlighting the dynamics between bioaugmented and native microbial communities. The transition from pediatric to adult care for patients with chronic disease is a vulnerable period, with risks of disengagement from care and subsequent complications of inadequately managed disease. This period comes at a time when there are many other transitions occurring in the young person's life, including changes to vocation, social supports, and to their physiology. The aim of the TRACER study is to assess the feasibility of conducting a multi-center, randomized-controlled trial of a virtual Transition Coach Intervention in youth transferring from pediatric to adult rheumatology care. Patients are being recruited at their last pediatric rheumatology visit from McMaster Children's Hospital and Children's Hospital, London Health Sciences Centre in Ontario, Canada. Participants are then randomized to standard of care or to eight transition coaching sessions, covering topics around health management, future planning, and self-advocacy. The primary outcomes of the study are to demonstrate protocol feasibility, including optimal recruitment and consent rates, ≥ 90% coaching session completion, and complete data collection with ≤ 5% missing data. Baseline demographics, transition readiness, global functional assessment, disease activity, and self-efficacy will be collected to characterize the study population. Recruitment has begun and is estimated to last 19 months. This study will inform the design of a robust, multi-centered, randomized-controlled study to investigate the impact of a virtual transition coaching program in supporting the physical, mental, and social well-being of youth with rheumatic disease transitioning into adult care. Background: Historically, golf does not have a strong tradition of fitness testing and physical training. However, in recent years, both players and practitioners have started to recognise the value of a fitter and healthier body, owing to its potential positive impacts on performance, namely clubhead speed (CHS)., Objective: The aim of this meta-analysis was to examine the associations between CHS (as measured using a driver) and a variety of physical characteristics., Methods: A systematic literature search with meta-analysis was conducted using Medline, SPORTDiscus, CINAHL and PubMed databases. Inclusion criteria required studies to have (1) determined the association between physical characteristics assessed in at least one physical test and CHS, (2) included golfers of any skill level but they had to be free from injury and (3) been peer-reviewed and published in the English language. Methodological quality was assessed using a modified version of the Downs and Black Quality Index tool and heterogeneity assessed via the Q statistic and I 2 . To provide summary effects for each of the physical characteristics and their associations with CHS, a random effects model was used where z-transformed r values (i.e. z r ) were computed to enable effect size pooling within the meta-analysis., Results: Of the 3039 studies initially identified, 20 were included in the final analysis. CHS was significantly associated with lower body strength (z r  = 0.47 [95% confidence intervals {CI} 0.24-0.69]), upper body strength (z r  = 0.48 [95% CI 0.28-0.68]), jump displacement (z r  = 0.53 [95% CI 0.28-0.78]), jump impulse (z r  = 0.82 [95% CI 0.63-1.02]), jumping peak power (z r  = 0.66 [95% CI 0.53-0.79]), upper body explosive strength (z r  = 0.67 [95% CI 0.53-0.80]), anthropometry (z r  = 0.43 [95% CI 0.29-0.58]) and muscle capacity (z r  = 0.17 [95% CI 0.04-0.31]), but not flexibility (z r  = - 0.04 [95% CI - 0.33 to 0.26]) or balance (z r  =  - 0.06 [95% CI - 0.46 to 0.34])., Conclusions: The findings from this meta-analysis highlight a range of physical characteristics are associated with CHS. Whilst significant associations ranged from trivial to large, noteworthy information is that jump impulse produced the strongest association, upper body explosive strength showed noticeably larger associations than upper body strength, and flexibility was not significant. Given the complexity of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and its interactions with coagulant chemicals, the mechanisms of DOM removal by aluminum (Al) coagulants remains a significant unknown. In this study, six test waters containing DOM with molecular weight (MW, <1 kDa, 1-10 kDa and >10 kDa) and hydrophobicity (hydrophilic, transphilic and hydrophobic) were prepared and coagulated with Al 0 , Al 13 and Al 30 . The molecular-level characteristics of DOM molecules that were removed or resistant to removal by Al species were analyzed using Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS). The results showed that at the molecular level, saturated and reduced tannins and lignin-like compounds containing abundant carboxyl groups exhibited higher coagulation efficiency. Unsaturated and oxidized lipids, protein-like, and carbohydrates compounds were relatively resistant to Al coagulation due to their higher polarity and lower content of carboxyl groups. Al 13 removed molecules across a wider range of molecular weights than Al 0 and Al 30 , thus the DOC removal efficiency of Al 13 was the highest. The interaction energies of two series of molecular balances (1-X with X = H, Me, OMe, NMe 2 and 2-Y with Y = H, CN, NO 2 , OMe, NMe 2 ) designed to probe carbonyl…carbonyl interactions were analysed at the B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p)-D3 level of theory using the energy partitioning method of Interacting Quantum Atoms/Fragments (IQA/IQF). The partitioned energies are analysed by the Relative Energy Gradient (REG) method, which calculates the correlation between these energies and the total energy of a system, thereby explaining the role atoms have in the energetic behaviour of the total system. The traditional "back-of-the-envelope" open and closed conformations of molecular balances do not correspond to those of the lowest energy. Hence, more care needs to be taken when considering which geometries to use for comparison with the experiment. The REG-IQA method shows that the 1-H and 1-OMe balances behave differently to the 1-Me and 1-NMe 2 balances because the latter show more prominent electrostatics between carbonyl groups and undergoes a larger dihedral rotation due to the bulkiness of the functional groups. For the 2-Y balance, REG-IQA shows the same behaviour across the series as the 1-H and 1-OMe balances. From an atomistic point of view, the formation of the closed conformer is favoured by polarisation and charge-transfer effects on the amide bond across all balances and is counterbalanced by a de-pyramidalisation of the amide nitrogen. Moreover, focusing on the oxygen of the amide carbonyl and the α-carbon of the remaining carbonyl group, electrostatics have a major role in the formation of the closed conformer, which goes against the well-known n-π* interaction orbital overlap concept. However, REG-IQF shows that exchange-correlation energies overtake electrostatics for all the 2-Y balances when working with fragments around the carbonyl groups, while they act on par with electrostatics for the 1-OMe and 1-NMe 2 . REG-IQF also shows that exchange-correlation energies in the 2-Y balance are correlated to the inductive electron-donating and -withdrawing trends on aromatic groups. We demonstrate that methods such as REG-IQA/IQF can help with the fine-tuning of molecular balances prior to the experiment and that the energies that govern the probed interactions are highly dependent on the atoms and functional groups involved.

Abstract: Robinson, L, Murray, A, Ehlert, A, Wells, J, Jarvis, P, Turner, A, Glover, D, Coughlan, D, Hembrough, R, and Bishop, C. Effects of physical training and associations between physical performance characteristics and golf performance in female players: A systematic review with meta-analysis. J Strength Cond Res 37(12): e646-e655, 2023-The aims of this systematic review were to assess the association between physical performance and measures of golf performance, and the effects of physical training on measures of golf performance, in female golfers. A systematic literature search was conducted in PubMed, SPORTDiscus, Medline, and CINAHL. Inclusion criteria required studies to (a) have conducted a physical training intervention of any duration in female players and determine the effects on measures of golf performance, (b) determine the association between physical performance in at least one test and golf performance in female players, and (c) be peer-reviewed and published in English language. Methodological quality was assessed using a modified version of the Downs and Black Quality Index tool, and heterogeneity was examined through the Q statistic and I2 . Pooled effect sizes were calculated using standardized mean differences (SMDs) (with 95% confidence interval [CI]s) within a random-effects model, with Egger's regression test used to assess small study bias (inclusive of publication bias). Of the 2,378 articles screened, only 9 were included in the final review, with 3 of these being associative by design and 6 being training interventions. From an associative standpoint, clubhead speed (CHS) was reported in all 3 studies and was associated with measures of strength ( r = 0.54), lower-body power ( r = 0.60), upper-body power ( r = 0.56-0.57), and flexibility ( r = 0.52-0.71). When assessing the effects of physical training interventions, CHS was again the most commonly reported golf outcome measure ( n = 5). The random-effect model indicated that CHS significantly improves within each training group following training interventions (SMD = 0.73 [95% CIs: 0.32-1.14], Z = 3.50, p < 0.001), with trivial heterogeneity ( I2 = 0.00%, Q = 0.18; p = 0.9963) and no prevalence of small study bias depicted through the Egger's regression test ( z = -0.28, p = 0.78). From the available research, it seems that CHS can be positively affected from strength, power, and flexibility training interventions. From an associative standpoint, only 3 studies have been conducted solely in female players, with one showcasing questionable methodology. Future research should aim to carefully select test measures which better represent the physical capacities needed for the sport when determining the effects of and relationships with golf performance., (Copyright © 2023 National Strength and Conditioning Association.)

Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are increasingly applied in water and wastewater treatment, but their energy consumption and chemical use may hinder their further implementation in a changing world. This study investigated the feasibility and mechanisms involved in a chemical-free nanobubble-based AOP for treating organic micropollutants in both synthetic and real water matrices. The removal efficiency of the model micropollutant Rhodamine B (RhB) by oxygen nanobubble AOP (98%) was significantly higher than for air (73%) and nitrogen nanobubbles (69%). The treatment performance was not significantly affected by pH (3-10) and the presence of ions (Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ , HCO 3 - , and Cl - ). Although a higher initial concentration of RhB (10 mg/L) led to a slower treatment process when compared to lower initial concentrations (0.1 and 1 mg/L), the final removal performance reached a similar level (∼98%) between 100 and 500 min. The coexistence of organic matter (humic acid, HA) resulted in a much lower reduction (70%) in the RhB removal rate. Both qualitative and quantitative analysis of reactive oxygen species (ROSs) using fluorescent probe, electron spin resonance, and quenching experiments demonstrated that the contributions of ROSs in RhB degradation followed the order: hydroxyl radical (•OH) > superoxide radical (•O 2 - ) > singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ). The cascade degradation reactions for RhB were identified which involve N-de-ethylation, hydroxylation, chromophore cleavage, opening-ring and final mineralisation processes. Moreover, the treatment of real water samples spiked with RhB, including natural lake water and secondary effluent from a sewage works, still showed considerable removals of the dye (75.3%-90.8%), supporting its practical feasibility. Validity of a smartphone app using artificial intelligence for the real-time measurement of barbell velocity in the bench press exercise. J Strength Cond Res 37(12): e640-e645, 2023-The purpose of this study was to explore the validity and within-session reliability of the newly developed My Jump Lab application (app), which uses artificial intelligence techniques to monitor barbell velocity in real time. Twenty-seven sport science students performed 5 repetitions at 50 and 75% of their self-reported bench press 1 repetition maximum (1RM) during a single testing session, whereas barbell velocity was concurrently measured using the app (installed on an iPhone 12 Pro) and the GymAware linear position transducer (LPT). A very high correlation was observed between devices at each loading condition (50% 1RM: r = 0.90 [0.82-0.97]; 75% 1RM: r = 0.92 [0.86-0.98]). Results showed trivial differences between the app and LPT at both 50% 1RM (g = -0.06) and 75% 1RM (g = -0.12). Bland-Altman analysis showed a bias estimate of -0.010 m·s-1 and -0.026 m·s-1 for the 50 and 75% 1RM, respectively. Finally, similar levels of reliability, as revealed by the coefficient of variation, were observed for both devices (50% 1RM: LPT = 6.52%, app = 8.17%; 75% 1RM: LPT = 12.10%, app = 13.55%). Recent transcriptomic-based analysis of diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL) has highlighted the clinical relevance of LN fibroblast and tumor-infiltrating lymphocyte (TIL) signatures within the tumor microenvironment (TME). However, the immunomodulatory role of fibroblasts in lymphoma remains unclear. Here, by studying human and mouse DLBCL-LNs, we identified the presence of an aberrantly remodeled fibroblastic reticular cell (FRC) network expressing elevated fibroblast-activated protein (FAP). RNA-Seq analyses revealed that exposure to DLBCL reprogrammed key immunoregulatory pathways in FRCs, including a switch from homeostatic to inflammatory chemokine expression and elevated antigen-presentation molecules. Functional assays showed that DLBCL-activated FRCs (DLBCL-FRCs) hindered optimal TIL and chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cell migration. Moreover, DLBCL-FRCs inhibited CD8+ TIL cytotoxicity in an antigen-specific manner. Notably, the interrogation of patient LNs with imaging mass cytometry identified distinct environments differing in their CD8+ TIL-FRC composition and spatial organization that associated with survival outcomes. We further demonstrated the potential to target inhibitory FRCs to rejuvenate interacting TILs. Cotreating organotypic cultures with FAP-targeted immunostimulatory drugs and a bispecific antibody (glofitamab) augmented antilymphoma TIL cytotoxicity. Our study reveals an immunosuppressive role of FRCs in DLBCL, with implications for immune evasion, disease pathogenesis, and optimizing immunotherapy for patients.

Background: Kidney transplantation is the gold-standard treatment for patients with kidney failure. However, one-third of patients awaiting a kidney transplant are highly sensitized to human leukocyte antigens (HLA), resulting in an increased waiting time for a suitable kidney, more acute and chronic rejection, and a shorter graft survival compared to non-highly sensitised patients. Current standard immunosuppression protocols do not adequately suppress memory responses, and so alternative strategies are needed. Autologous polyclonally expanded regulatory T cells (Tregs) have been demonstrated to be safe in transplant settings and could be a potential alternative to modulate memory immune alloresponses., Methods: The aim of this trial is to determine whether adoptive transfer of autologous Tregs into HLA sensitised patients can suppress memory T and B cell responses against specific HLA antigens. This is a two-part, multi-centre, prospective clinical trial, comprising an observational phase (Part 1) aiming to identify patients with unregulated cellular memory responses to HLA (Pure HLA Proteins) followed by an interventional phase (Part 2). The first 9 patients identified as being eligible in Part 1 will undergo baseline immune monitoring for 2 months to inform statistical analysis of the primary endpoint. Part 2 is an adaptive, open labelled trial based on Simon's two-stage design, with 21 patients receiving Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP)-grade polyclonally expanded Tregs to a dose of 5-10 × 106 cells/kg body weight. The primary EP is suppression of in vitro memory responses for 2 months post-infusion. 12 patients will receive treatment in stage 1 of Part 2, and 9 patients will receive treatment in stage 2 of Part 2 if ≥ 50% patients pass the primary EP in stage 1., Discussion: This is a prospective study aiming to identify patients with unregulated cellular memory responses to Pure HLA Proteins and determine baseline variation in these patterns of response. Part 2 will be an adaptive phase IIa clinical trial with 21 patients receiving a single infusion of GMP-grade polyclonally expanded Tregs in two stages. Bubble aeration has been widely applied in water/wastewater treatment, however its low gas utilization rate results in high energy consumption. Application of micro-nanobubbles (MNB) has emerged as a process with the potential to significantly increase gas utilisation due to their high relative surface area and high gas-liquid mass transfer efficiency. In this study, we demonstrate through calibrated models that MNB of an optimum bubble size can shrink and burst at or below the water surface enabling (1) all encapsulated gas to thoroughly dissolve in water, and (2) the bursting of nanobubbles to potentially generate free radicals. Through the understanding of MNB dimensional characteristics and bubble behaviour in water, a dynamic model that integrated force balance (i.e. buoyancy force, gravity, drag force, Basset force and virtual mass force), and mass transfer was developed to describe the rising velocity and radius variation of MNB along its upward trajectory. Unlike for conventional millimetre-sized bubbles, intensive gas dissolution of MNBs led to radius reduction for small bubbles, while a large initial radius triggers bubble swelling. The initial water depth was also crucial, where greater depth could drive the potential for bubble shrinkage so that they were more liable to contract. For example, the optimum bubble size of air (42-194 μm) and oxygen (127-470 μm) MNB that could achieve complete gas transfer (100% gas utilisation) for a range of specific water depths (0.5-10 m) were calculated. The modelling results for microbubbles (10-530 μm) were well validated by the experimental data (R 2 >0.85). However, the validation of the modelling results for nanobubble (<1 μm) aeration requires further study due to a lack of available empirical data. Background: Current child measurements of weight status in Wales are determined at early childhood only. A further measurement at late childhood could identify adiposity levels prior to adolescence and young adulthood. The aim of this study therefore was to determine current adiposity levels in a cohort of children at late childhood and present a prediction of future levels upon entering young adulthood., Methods: In total, 288 boys (M age = 10.94 years, SD = 0.58) and 257 girls (M age = 10.78 years, SD = 0.63) from South East Wales were measured for anthropometry and their body mass index (BMI) (kg/m2) determined. International Obesity Task Force data predicted their BMI at age 18 years., Results: Approximately one quarter of boys and girls in late childhood were classified at an unhealthy weight. Predictive data showed that by age 18 years, this percentage had increased to approximately one-third in both genders., Conclusion: The overweight and obesity levels in our cohort were high and predicted that many could become obese adults. Hidradenitis Suppurativa (HS) is a chronic, recurrent, inflammatory, follicular skin disease whose pathology is complex and not fully understood. The objective of this study was to elucidate the role of IL-17A in moderate-to-severe HS. Transcriptomic and histological analyses were conducted on ex vivo HS (n = 19; lesional and non-lesional) and healthy control (n = 8) skin biopsies. Further, a Phase II exploratory, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study was carried out in moderate-to-severe HS patients. Patients were treated with either CJM112 300 mg (n = 33), a fully human anti-IL-17A IgG1/κ monoclonal antibody, or placebo (n = 33). The main outcome of the translational analyses was to identify IL-17A-producing cells and indications of IL-17A activity in HS lesional skin. The primary objective of the clinical study was to determine the efficacy of CJM112 in moderate-to-severe HS patients by HS-Physician Global Assessment (HS-PGA) responder rate at Week 16. Transcriptomic and histopathologic analyses revealed the presence of heterogeneous cell types in HS lesional skin; IL-17A gene signatures were increased in HS lesional vs non-lesional or healthy skin. High expression of IL-17A was localized to T cells, neutrophils, and mast cells, confirming the transcriptional data. Clinically, the proportion of Week 16 HS-PGA responders was significantly higher (p = 0.03) in the CJM112 group vs placebo (32.3% vs 12.5%). The aim of the present study was to analyse the validity and reliability of the newly developed My Jump Lab smartphone app, which includes the option to calculate time to take-off and the reactive strength index modified (RSI&#95;Mod - calculated as jump height divided by time to take-off), in addition to jump height. Twenty-seven postgraduate sport science students attended a single test session and performed three maximal effort countermovement jumps (CMJ) on twin force plates, whilst concurrently being filmed using the app. Results showed no significant differences in jump height between measurement methods (g = 0.00) or RSI&#95;Mod (g = -0.49), although a significant difference was evident for time to take-off (g = 0.68). When a correction factor was applied to time to take-off data, no meaningful differences were evident (g = 0.00), which also had a knock-on effect for RSI&#95;Mod (g = 0.10). Bland-Altman analysis showed near perfect levels of agreement for jump height with a bias estimate of 0.001 m, whilst time to take-off reported a bias estimate of 0.075 s initially and, 0.000 s once the correction factor was applied. For RSI&#95;Mod, bias estimate was initially -0.048, and 0.006 once calculated with the corrected time to take-off data. Pearson's r correlations were: 0.98 for jump height, 0.81 for time to take-off, and 0.85 for RSI&#95;Mod. Case presentationA 14-year-old boy, with autism spectrum disorder, presented with a 1-day history of colicky abdominal pain, non-bilious vomiting, anorexia and loose normal-coloured stool. Two days previously, he had a poorly reheated takeaway chicken.On examination, body mass index (BMI) was >99th centile. He had inconsistent epigastric, periumbilical and umbilical tenderness, and guarding, with normal bowel sounds. Observations were within normal limits, but his pain was poorly responsive to paracetamol, ibuprofen, hyoscine butylbromide, codeine and morphine.Investigations are in table 1. Lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) individuals are at a particularly high risk for suicidal behavior in the general population of the United States. This study aims to determine if there are differences in the frequency of lifetime suicide ideation and suicide attempts between heterosexual, lesbian/gay, and bisexual service members in the active component of the U.S. Armed Forces. Self-reported data from the 2015 Department of Defense Health-Related Behaviors Survey were used in the analysis. Multivariable logistic regression demonstrated that lesbian/gay and bisexual service members were more likely to report past suicide ideation when compared to heterosexual service members (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] for lesbian/gay: 1.79; 95% CI:1.14-2.82; AOR for bisexual: 2.33; 95% CI: 1.56-3.49). Similar results were observed for past suicide attempt for lesbian/gay (AOR: 2.29; 95% CI: 1.15-4.57) and bisexual SMs (AOR: 2.04; 95% CI: 1.24-3.38). Despite disparities in suicide ideation and attempt by sexual orientation, a majority of service members’ behavioral health questionnaires do not assess sexual orientation. Clinical screenings of suicide risk in military settings should factor in sexual orientation to more comprehensively assess association between sexual orientation and suicidal behavior in this population.

A pilot scale chlorine contact tank (CCT) with flexible baffling was installed at an operational water treatment plant (WTP), taking a direct feed from the outlet of the rapid gravity filters (RGF). For the first time, disinfection efficacy was established by direct microbial monitoring in a continuous reactor using flow cytometry (FCM). Disinfection variables of dose, time, and hydraulic efficiency (short circuiting and dispersion) were explored following characterisation of the reactor's residence time distributions (RTD) by tracer testing. FCM enabled distinction to be made between changes in disinfection reactor design where standard culture-based methods could not. The product of chlorine concentration (C) and residence time (t) correlated well with inactivation of microbes, organisms, with the highest cell reductions (N/N 0 ) reaching <0.025 at Ct x¯ of 20 mg.min/L and above. The influence of reactor geometry on disinfection was best shown from the Ct 10 . This identified that the initial level of microbial inactivation was higher in unbaffled reactors for low Ct 10 values, although the highest levels of inactivation of 0.015 could only be achieved in the baffled reactors, because these conditions enabled the highest Ct 10 values to be achieved. Increased levels of disinfection were closely associated with increased formation of the trihalomethane disinfection by-products. The results highlight the importance of well-designed and operated CCT. Ion Exchange (IEX) applications for drinking water can be limited due to high volumes of brine, brine waste and treated water corrosivity. Reusing the resin by operating at reduced regeneration frequency can overcome this. However, assessing changes on the resin loading over reuse cycles is complex because multiple presaturant ions participate in the exchange and existing models only account for the exchange with one presaturant ion. This study developed a theoretical multicomponent model for the determination of IEX equilibria when the resin loading increases due to reuse. The model suggested that both electrostatic interactions and admicelle formation were the separation mechanisms. The model revealed that under reduced regeneration frequencies, brine use and waste generation can be reduced by more than 90%, where the bicarbonate-form resin offered the potential for lower corrosivity. However, changes in resin loading after 5 reuse cycles showed that the risk of corrosion increased. For the tested source water, reusing the bicarbonate-form resin every 5 cycles would achieve the most sustainable option with 41% NOM removal and 79% brine and waste reduction. The continued technological developments and decreased purchase costs of ceramic membranes have seen increased recent interest in the technology as an alternative to the more widely used polymeric membranes. This paper assesses the relative technical, practical and economic merits of the two membrane materials in the context of potable water production from surface water sources. The work focuses on phenomena of direct technoeconomic significance, namely cleaning efficacy (manifested as permeability recovery), membrane integrity and incurred labour effort. Topics reviewed thus comprise: (a) practical comparison of the two technologies challenged with the same feedwater, (b) comparative technoeconomic analyses, (c) membrane integrity studies of polymeric membranes - incorporating aged samples extracted from operating installations, (d) sludging incidents, and (e) pilot and full-scale data. Available relevant data reveal: (a) bench-scale comparative tests do not indicate a consistent significant difference in the net permeability between the two membranes; (b) polymeric membranes are subject to a decline in both mechanical strength and permeability from the loss of the hydrophilic agent over a period of years from the action of hypochlorite used for cleaning; (c) the decreased mechanical strength with age of polymeric membranes increases the manual repair requirement and shortens membrane life, respectively impacting on labour and membrane replacement costs where the latter is also determined by the permeability; (d) the chemical and mechanical robustness of ceramic membranes permits more aggressive chemical cleaning, which then affects the chemicals consumption cost; and (e) anecdotal evidence suggests that polymeric membranes challenged with pre-coagulated surface waters may be subject to sludging, the agglomeration of solids in the membrane channels, which may also be age-related. Notwithstanding the above, data from published comparative technoeconomic studies indicate a linear relationship between the overall cost benefit and the membrane module cost ratio mitigated by the relative membrane life and operating flux., (Copyright © 2022. Removal of pesticides from agricultural run-off close to the point of application has the potential to prevent or reduce the pollution of water sources used for drinking. This research considered the novel application of activated carbon (AC) fabric as a sorbent material for removal of pesticides from field run-off. AC fabric was tested for the removal of the molluscicide pesticide metaldehyde under a range of flow rates at both laboratory and pilot scale. Metaldehyde at an initial concentration of 10 μg/L was removed effectively from deionised (DI) water and real source water by the AC cloth under all conditions tested, reaching removal of 1375 and 876 μg/g (equivalent to 169 and 264 mg/m 2 ), respectively. The adsorption followed pseudo-second order kinetics (k 2 of 29.9 and 34.8 g/μg min for the AC fabric and GAC), providing rapid removal of metaldehyde within the first 5 min of contact. In single pass and flow through conditions, stabilised removal of 46% metaldehyde was achieved by the AC fabric bundle for treatment of 700 L of real water in a pilot scale flume. This equated to removal of 454 μg/m 2 , although significantly more removal would be expected over longer duration testing given the stabilised removal and the equilibrium capacity of the fabric seen during the batch isotherm testing. Abstract: Bishop, C, Read, P, Chavda, S, Jarvis, P, Brazier, J, Bromley, T, and Turner, A. Magnitude or direction? Seasonal variation of interlimb asymmetry in elite academy soccer players. J Strength Cond Res 36(4): 1031-1037, 2022-Previous research has highlighted a distinct lack of longitudinal data for asymmetry. The aims of this study were to provide seasonal variation data for the magnitude and direction of asymmetry. Eighteen elite male academy soccer players (under-23) performed unilateral countermovement jumps (CMJs) and unilateral drop jumps (DJs) during pre-season, mid-season, and end of season time points. Recorded metrics for asymmetry included jump height and concentric impulse for the CMJ, and jump height and reactive strength index for the DJ. The magnitude of asymmetry showed trivial to small changes throughout the season (CMJ effect size [ES] range = -0.43 to 0.05; DJ ES range = -0.18 to 0.41). However, Kappa coefficients showed poor to substantial levels of agreement for the direction of asymmetry during the CMJ (Kappa = -0.06 to 0.77) and DJ (Kappa = -0.10 to 0.78) throughout the season. These data show that when monitoring asymmetry, the magnitude alone may provide a false impression of consistent scores over time. By contrast, monitoring the direction of asymmetry highlights its task and variable nature and is suggested as a useful tool for practitioners who wish to monitor asymmetry over the course of a competitive soccer season., (Copyright © 2020 National Strength and Conditioning Association.)

Abstract: Bishop, C, Read, P, Bromley, T, Brazier, J, Jarvis, P, Chavda, S, and Turner, A. The association between interlimb asymmetry and athletic performance tasks: A season-long study in elite academy soccer players. J Strength Cond Res 36(3): 787-795, 2022-The aims of this study were to determine the association between asymmetry and measures of speed and change of direction speed (CODS) performance throughout a competitive soccer season and, determine whether any observed changes in asymmetry were associated with changes in speed and CODS performance. Eighteen elite male under-23 academy soccer players performed unilateral countermovement jumps, unilateral drop jumps (DJ), 10- and 30-m sprints, and 505 CODS tests at pre, mid, and end of season. No significant relationships were evident during preseason or midseason between asymmetry and speed or CODS performance. Significant correlations were shown at the end of season between DJ height asymmetry and 10-m sprint time (ρ = 0.62; p = 0.006) and 505 time on the right limb (ρ = 0.65; p = 0.003). No significant correlations between changes in asymmetry and changes in speed or CODS were evident at any time point. Although numerous studies have reported associations between asymmetry and reduced athletic performance, it seems that these associations with speed and CODS do not track consistently over time. Metaldehyde is a polar, mobile, low molecular weight pesticide that is challenging to remove from drinking water with current adsorption-based micropollutant treatment technologies. Alternative strategies to remove this and compounds with similar properties are necessary to ensure an adequate supply of safe and regulation-compliant drinking water. Biological removal of metaldehyde below the 0.1 µg•L -1 regulatory concentration was attained in pilot-scale slow sand filters (SSFs) subject to bioaugmentation with metaldehyde-degrading bacteria. To achieve this, a library of degraders was first screened in bench-scale assays for removal at micropollutant concentrations in progressively more challenging conditions, including a mixed microbial community with multiple carbon sources. The best performing strains, A. calcoaceticus E1 and Sphingobium CMET-H, showed removal rates of 0.0012 µg•h -1 •10 7 cells -1 and 0.019 µg•h -1 •10 7 cells -1 at this scale. These candidates were then used as inocula for bioaugmentation of pilot-scale SSFs. Here, removal of metaldehyde by A. calcoaceticus E1, was insufficient to achieve compliant water regardless testing increasing cell concentrations. Quantification of metaldehyde-degrading genes indicated that aggregation and inadequate distribution of the inoculum in the filters were the likely causes of this outcome. Conversely, bioaugmentation with Sphingobium CMET-H enabled sufficient metaldehyde removal to achieve compliance, with undetectable levels in treated water for at least 14 d (volumetric removal: 0.57 µg•L -1 •h -1 ). Bioaugmentation did not affect the background SSF microbial community, and filter function was maintained throughout the trial. Here it has been shown for the first time that bioaugmentation is an efficient strategy to remove the adsorption-resistant pesticide metaldehyde from a real water matrix in upscaled systems. Swift contaminant removal after inoculum addition and persistent activity are two remarkable attributes of this approach that would allow it to effectively manage peaks in metaldehyde concentrations (due to precipitation or increased application) in incoming raw water by matching them with high enough degrading populations. This study provides an example of how stepwise screening of a diverse collection of degraders can lead to successful bioaugmentation and can be used as a template for other problematic adsorption-resistant compounds in drinking water purification., (Copyright © 2022 The Authors. Cold water immersion offers no functional or perceptual benefit compared to a sham intervention during a resistance training program. J Strength Cond Res 35(10): 2720-2727, 2021-Cold water immersion (CWI) is regularly used by athletes as a postexercise recovery strategy, but relatively little is understood about potential training adaptations associated with habitual use. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of repeated CWI or a sham intervention on adaptations to a lower body resistance training program. Thirteen men (26 ± 6 years; 83.6 ± 15.7 kg) familiar with resistance training were allocated into a CWI (10 minutes at 10° C) or sham group and completed 2 × 4-week blocks of lower body resistance training. Subjects completed a total of 16 training sessions (2 × session·week-1), with each session immediately followed by their allocated recovery intervention. Measures of perceptual markers, muscle function, and muscle architecture were recorded at baseline, midpoint, and post-training. Data were analyzed using factorial analysis of variances. The training program resulted in significant increases in muscle fibre pennation angle (p = 0.009), isometric peak force (p = 0.018), and 1/4 squat (p < 0.001) with no differences between groups (all p > 0.05). There were no differences in perceptual responses between groups. Despite the popularity of CWI as a postexercise recovery intervention, the findings from the present study demonstrated no functional or perceptual benefit compared with a sham intervention during progressive strength and power training. Furthermore, there was no detrimental impact of CWI on morphological adaptations after 16 exposures. Microbial contamination of water in the form of highly-resistant bacterial spores can cause a long-term risk of waterborne disease. Advanced photocatalysis has become an effective approach to inactivate bacterial spores due to its potential for efficient solar energy conversion alongside reduced formation of disinfection by-products. However, the overall efficiency of the process still requires significant improvements. Here, we proposed and evaluated a novel visible light photocatalytic water disinfection technology by its close coupling with micro/nano bubbles (MNBs). The inactivation rate constant of Bacillus subtilis spores reached 1.28 h -1 , which was 5.6 times higher than that observed for treatment without MNBs. The superior performance for the progressive destruction of spores' cells during the treatment was confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and excitation-emission matrix (EEM) spectra determination. Experiments using scavengers of reactive oxygen species (ROSs) revealed that H 2 O 2 and •OH were the primary active species responsible for the inactivation of spores. The effective supply of oxygen from air MNBs helped accelerate the hole oxidation of H 2 O 2 on the photocatalyst (i.e. Ag/TiO 2 ). In addition, the interfacial photoelectric effect from the MNBs was also confirmed to contribute to the spore inactivation. Specifically, MNBs induced strong light scattering, consequently increasing the optical path length in the photocatalysis medium by 54.8% at 700nm and enhancing light adsorption of the photocatalyst. The non-uniformities in dielectricity led to a high-degree of heterogeneity of the electric field, which triggered the formation of a region of enhanced light intensity which ultimately promoted the photocatalytic reaction. Abstract: Bishop, C, Read, P, Brazier, J, Jarvis, P, Chavda, S, Bromley, T, and Turner, A. Effects of interlimb asymmetries on acceleration and change of direction speed: a between-sport comparison of professional soccer and cricket athletes. J Strength Cond Res 35(8): 2095-2101, 2021-The first aim of this study was to quantify and compare asymmetries among professional soccer and cricket athletes. The second aim was to examine the association between asymmetries and performance within both groups. Professional soccer (n = 18) and cricket (n = 23) athletes performed single-leg countermovement jumps, single-leg drop jumps (SLDJs), a 10-m sprint, and 505 change of direction speed (CODS) tests. Interlimb asymmetries were calculated as a standard percentage difference, Mann-Whitney U tests conducted to establish systematic bias between groups, and Spearman's r correlations used to establish the relationship between asymmetry scores and speed and CODS performance. Soccer athletes sprinted faster, jumped higher, and had a greater reactive strength index (RSI) score than cricket athletes (p < 0.05). However, cricketers showed reduced ground contact times compared with footballers during the SLDJ (p < 0.05). The cricket group showed significantly greater jump height (asymmetry = 11.49 vs. 6.51%; p = 0.015) and RSI (asymmetry = 10.37 vs. 5.95%; p = 0.014) asymmetries compared with soccer players. These metrics were also associated with slower 505 times in the cricket group only (r = 0.56 -0.74; p < 0.01). These results show that between-limb asymmetries exhibit no association with speed and CODS in elite soccer players but are associated with reduced CODS in elite cricketers. Background and Objective: Anti-IL-17A IgG/κ monoclonal antibody CJM112 binds both IL-17A and IL-17AF. The purpose of this First-in-Human study was to assess CJM112 effects on safety and efficacy in patients with moderate to severe plaque psoriasis., Methods: This study had two parts: single ascending doses of 5-450 mg subcutaneous (s.c.) CJM112 (SAD) and multi-dose parallel groups of CJM112 15 mg, 50 mg and 150 mg s.c. low frequency or high frequency (MD). SAD/MD were double-blind, randomized and placebo-controlled; MD also included a secukinumab 150 mg s.c. arm as an active comparator. Patients 18-65 years with moderate to severe psoriasis were included in this study. The efficacy outcome was the change in Psoriasis Area Severity Index (PASI) from baseline to Week 4 in the SAD part of the study, and from baseline to Week 12 in the MD part., Results: 96 patients were enrolled in this study (SAD, n = 42; MD, n = 54). In SAD, CJM112 doses from 15 mg and above demonstrated higher PASI responses compared with placebo at Week 12. CJM112 450 mg did not add further efficacy, but efficacy duration was prolonged compared with CJM112 150 mg. CJM112 MD resulted in a dose-dependent decrease in PASI over time to Week 12. CJM112 150 mg high frequency did not exceed the effect of CJM112 150 mg low frequency and had similar efficacy to secukinumab 150 mg. The safety profile of CJM112 was as expected for an antibody targeting IL-17A/IL-17AF., Conclusions: CJM112 had clinical efficacy in moderate to severe psoriasis and was generally safe and well tolerated in the doses tested. We propose an extension of the Yang-Mills paradigm from Lie algebras to internal chiral superalgebras. We replace the Lie algebra-valued connection one-form A , by a superalgebra-valued polyform A ˜ mixing exterior-forms of all degrees and satisfying the chiral self-duality condition A ˜ = * A ˜ χ , where χ denotes the superalgebra grading operator. This superconnection contains Yang-Mills vectors valued in the even Lie subalgebra, together with scalars and self-dual tensors valued in the odd module, all coupling only to the charge parity CP-positive Fermions. The Fermion quantum loops then induce the usual Yang-Mills-scalar Lagrangian, the self-dual Avdeev-Chizhov propagator of the tensors, plus a new vector-scalar-tensor vertex and several quartic terms which match the geometric definition of the supercurvature. Applied to the SU(2/1) Lie-Kac simple superalgebra, which naturally classifies all the elementary particles, the resulting quantum field theory is anomaly-free and the interactions are governed by the super-Killing metric and by the structure constants of the superalgebra.

Background: Radium-223 dichloride (Ra-223) therapy improves overall survival in bony metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) patients. Recent guidance change recommends Ra-223 following at least two prior therapies for mCRPC. We evaluated how this change affects overall survival and the optimal timing of Ra-223 in the mCRPC treatment pathway., Methods: Retrospective analysis of all mCRPC patients receiving Ra-223 therapy at a single UK centre over a 70-month period. Overall survival, number of prior lines of therapy commenced before Ra-223 initiation and number of Ra-223 therapy cycles completed were identified., Results: One hundred ninety-one mCRPC patients received Ra-223 therapy during the study period. One hundred twenty-one (63%) received one prior therapy (group 1) and 70 (37%) received two prior therapies (group 2). Median survival in group 1 was significantly improved, compared to group 2 (448 days vs. 341 days (P = 0.03). Subgroup analysis of 111/191 (58%) patients that completed the recommended six Ra-223 therapy cycles showed additional improved survival. Median survival in group 1 was incrementally significantly improved, compared to group 2 within these patients (665 days vs. 552 days; P = 0.05). There was no difference in the number of patients completing the recommenced six cycles of therapy between the groups [72/121 (59%) vs. 39/70 (56%); P = 0.61]., Conclusion: We found a significant survival benefit when Ra-223 was used earlier in the mCRPC treatment pathway, with additional survival advantage seen in those patients completing all six Ra-223 cycles. The current study compared the impact of three different unit processes, coagulation, granular activated carbon (GAC), and a novel suspended ion exchange (SIX) technology, on disinfection by-product formation potential (DBPFP) from two UK lowland water sources with medium to high bromide content. Specific attention was given to the influence of the organic molecular weight (MW) fraction on DBPFP as well as the impact of bromide concentration. Whilst few studies have investigated the impact of MW fractions from Liquid Chromatography with Organic Carbon Detection (LC-OCD) analysis on dissolved organic carbon (DOC) removal by different processes, none have studied the influence of DOC MW fractions from this analysis on DBP formation. The impact of higher bromide concentration was to decrease the total trihalomethane (THM) and haloacetic acid (HAA) mass concentration, in contrast to previously reported studies. Results indicated that for a moderate bromide concentration source (135 μg/L), the THM formation potential was reduced by 22% or 64% after coagulation or SIX treatment, respectively. For a high bromide content source (210 μg/L), the THM formation potential removal was 47% or 69% following GAC or SIX treatment, respectively. The trend was the same for HAAs, albeit with greater differences between the two processes/feedwaters with reference to overall removal. A statistical analysis indicated that organic matter of MW > 350 g/mol had a significant impact on DBPFP. Background: Adults with intellectual disability (ID) experience inequality in access to healthcare that is considered to extend to end-of-life care. Their experiences of healthcare at the end of life and how these compare with the general population are unknown., Aim: To describe the end-of-life care outcomes for adults with ID living in residential care in the UK using the VOICES-SF questionnaire and compare these with the general population., Design: Nationwide population-based postbereavement survey., Participants: 38 ID care providers took part in the study. The supported over 13 000 people with ID. Over the 18-month period of data collection, 222 deaths were reported. The survey was completed, by care staff, for 157 (70.7%) of those deaths., Results: Decedents had complex health, functional and behavioural needs. Death was unanticipated in a high proportion of cases. Quality of care provided across care settings was generally well rated. However, hospital care and care provided at the time of was less well rated, particularly in comparison with the general population. Respondents reported low levels of involvement in care and awareness of approaching death among adults with ID, and lower than in the general population., Conclusions: Access to end-of-life care for adults with ID may be constrained by a failure to identify approaching the end of life. The high proportion of unexpected deaths in this population warrants further study. Background and Aims: KRP203 is a potent oral agonist of the sphingosine-1-phosphate receptor subtype 1 that induces the sequestration of peripheral lymphocytes, thereby potentially reducing the number of activated lymphocytes circulating to the gastrointestinal tract., Methods: We conducted a multicentre, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group, proof-of-concept study to evaluate the efficacy, safety, and tolerability of KRP203 in patients with moderately active 5-aminosalicylate-refractory ulcerative colitis (UC). Patients were randomly assigned to receive 1.2 mg KRP203 or placebo daily for 8 weeks. Primary efficacy variable was clinical remission, defined as partial Mayo Score 0-1 and modified Baron Score 0-1 with rectal bleeding subscore 0., Results: KRP203 was safe and well tolerated overall. The most common adverse events (AEs) were gastrointestinal disorders and headache. Importantly, no KRP203-related cardiac AEs were reported. Total peripheral lymphocytes and selectively affected lymphocyte subtypes decreased, causing marked decreases in naive and central memory CD4+ and CD8+ T cells, and also in B cells. Clinical remission occurred in 2/14 (14%) patients under KRP203, compared with 0/8 (0%) under placebo., Conclusions: Overall, KRP203 was safe and well tolerated by patients with UC. Importantly, no cardiac AEs were reported. Although KRP203 did not meet the minimum clinically relevant threshold for efficacy, the results may suggest that KRP203 treatment is superior to placebo. However, in this small study population, the difference was insignificant. Background: Population-based data are presented on the nature of dying in intellectual disability services., Methods: A retrospective survey was conducted over 18 months with a sample of UK-based intellectual disability service providers that supported over 12,000. Core data were obtained for 222 deaths within this population. For 158 (71%) deaths, respondents returned a supplemented and modified version of VOICES-SF., Results: The observed death was 12.2 deaths per 1,000 people supported per year, but just over a third deaths had been deaths anticipated by care staff. Mortality patterns, place of usual care and availability of external support exerted considerable influence over outcomes at the end of life., Conclusion: Death is not a common event in intellectual disability services. A major disadvantage experienced by people with intellectual disabilities was that their deaths were relatively unanticipated. People with intellectual disabilities living in supported living settings, even when their dying was anticipated, experienced poorer outcomes., (© 2020 The Authors. Defects in chloroplast development are 'retrograde-signalled' to the nucleus, reducing synthesis of photosynthetic or related proteins. The Arabidopsis cue8 mutant manifests virescence, a slow-greening phenotype, and is defective at an early stage in plastid development. Greening cotyledons or early leaf cells of cue8 exhibit immature chloroplasts which fail to fill the available cellular space. Such chloroplasts show reduced expression of genes of photosynthetic function, dependent on the plastid-encoded polymerase (PEP), while the expression of genes of housekeeping function driven by the nucleus-encoded polymerase (NEP) is elevated, a phenotype shared with mutants in plastid genetic functions. We attribute this phenotype to reduced expression of specific PEP-controlling sigma factors, elevated expression of RPOT (NEP) genes and maintained replication of plastid genomes (resulting in densely coalesced nucleoids in the mutant), i.e. it is due to an anterograde nucleus-to-chloroplast correction, analogous to retention of a juvenile plastid state. Mutants in plastid protein import components, particularly those involved in housekeeping protein import, also show this 'retro-anterograde' correction. Loss of CUE8 also causes changes in mRNA editing. The overall response has strong fitness value: loss of GUN1, an integrator of retrograde signalling, abolishes elements of it (albeit not others, including editing changes), causing bleaching and eventual seedling lethality upon cue8 gun1 . Operational and financial constraints challenge effective removal of natural organic matter (NOM), and specifically disinfection by-product (DBP) precursors, at remote and/or small sites. Granular activated carbon (GAC) is a widely used treatment option for such locations, due to its relatively low maintenance and process operational simplicity. However, its efficacy is highly dependent on the media capacity for the organic matter, which in turn depends on the media characteristics. The influence of GAC media properties on NOM/DBP precursor removal has been studied using a range of established and emerging media using both batch adsorption tests and rapid small-scale column tests. DBP formation propensity (DBPFP) was measured with reference to trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs). All GAC media showed no selectivity for specific removal of precursors of regulated DBPs; DBP formation was a simple function of residual dissolved organic carbon (DOC) levels. UV 254 was found to be a good surrogate measurement of DBPFP for an untreated water source having a high DOC. Due to the much-reduced concentration of DBP precursors, the correlation was significantly poorer for the coagulation/flocculation-pretreateed water source. Breakthrough curves generated from the microcolumn trials revealed DOC removal and consequent DBP reduction to correlate reasonably well with the prevalence pores in the 5-10 nm range. A 3-6 fold increase in capacity was recorded for a 0.005-0.045 cm 3 /g change in 5-10 nm-sized pore volume density. The UV/Chlorine process has gained attention in recent years due to the high quantum yield and absorbance of the chlorine species. However, there are still many unknowns around its application as a treatment for drinking water. The potential for the formation of disinfection by-products (DBPs) is one of them. There are no studies reporting on the formation of trihalomethanes (THMs) or haloacetic acids (HAAs) in complex matrices, such as real source waters, at UV wavelengths tailored to the UV/Chlorine process, which has been possible thanks to the development of light emitting diodes (LEDs). In addition, consideration of mitigation measures that might be needed after UV/Chlorine treatment for full scale application have not been previously reported. Specifically, the novelty of this work resides in the use of an innovative reactor using UV-LEDs emitting at 285 nm for the removal of three pesticides (metaldehyde, carbetamide and mecoprop), the evaluation of THM, HAA and bromate formation in real water sources by UV/Chlorine treatment and the mitigation effect of subsequent GAC treatment. A new parameter, the applied optical dose (AOD), has been defined for UV reactors, such as the one in the present study, where the irradiated volume is non-uniform. The results showed the feasibility of using the UV/Chlorine process with LEDs, although a compromise is needed between pH and chlorine concentration to remove pesticides while minimising DBP formation. Overall, the UV/Chlorine process did not significantly increase THM or HAA formation at pH 7.9-8.2 at the studied wavelength. At acidic pH, however, THM formation potential increased up to 30% after UV/Chlorine treatment with concentrations up to 60 μg/L. HAA formation potential increased between 100 and 180%, although concentrations never exceeded 35 μg/L. Objective: As part of a large mixed-method study aimed at capturing understandings of dignity, and care expectations of community dwelling older women from Black and minority ethnic (BME) backgrounds living in Wales, the aim of this paper is to compare service providers' perceptions of their care and support provided to older people in general, and to older women from BME backgrounds in particular, with a focus on two dignity indicators: care and support needs, and effective communication. Design: A survey design was used. Results: A total of 124 responses from service providers in Wales were received. Perceived inequalities in care and support were found. Although most respondents reported that care and support provision was generally acceptable, more respondents believed that compared to older people in general, older women from BME backgrounds were seldom or never offered opportunities and support to express their needs, were involved in their own care, were provided appropriate information, had their key needs especially less visible needs (psychological and religious needs) been taken into account, or were communicated with effectively (all p  < 0.05). In some cases, respondents tended to report more positively in areas related to their own practice. Conclusion: We suggest that learning from the views and perceptions of service providers, as well as older people and their families, remains key to developing services for the UK's increasingly diverse and ageing population. A better understanding of how inequalities may occur, their impact on older people and their families, and how they may be minimised can inform the development of high quality care for older people regardless of their ethnic and cultural backgrounds in Wales, other parts of the UK and beyond.

Over twenty thousand persons rely on water from Atuwara River for drinking and other domestic purposes, hence the need to ascertain the human health risk inherent in such practice. Seventy-two water samples were collected from River Atuwara during the dry and wet seasons of 2018, and the concentration of heavy metals (Pb, As, Ni, Cr, Zn, Cu, and Cd) were measured using ICP-OES. A newly developed human health risk assessment method, HHRISK code was used to estimate the health risks associated with consumption of water from Atuwara River. Results obtained revealed that the concentration of heavy metals in the river was as follows: Cd < Ni < Pb < Cr < Cu < As < Zn in the wet season and Cd < Pb < Ni < Cu < Cr < As < Zn during the dry season. Principal component analysis suggested that industrial effluents, agricultural activities and base-rock interaction are responsible for pollution of Atuwara River. The cumulative hazard index (HIcum) obtained was 678.0 ± 36.8 (for adult) and 1392.0 ± 132 (for child) for non-carcinogenic risks. A cumulative carcinogenic risk (CRcum) of 1.01E-1±5.26E-3 and 4.96E-2±5.05E-3 was obtained for adult and children respectively, suggesting that up to 1 in 10 adults and 1 in 20 children may suffer from cancer over their lifetime as a result of consumption and exposure to water from River Atuwara. Three different source waters were investigated using virgin and pre-used anion exchange resins, coagulation, and ion exchange combined with coagulation (IEX&Coagulation). The hydrophobicity, size distribution and charge of natural organic matter (NOM) were used to evaluate its removal. Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) removal by pre-used IEX resin was 67-79%. A consistent ratio of different hydrophobicity fractions was found in the removed DOC, while the proportion and quantity of the molecular weight fraction around 1 kDa was important in understanding the treatability of water. For pre-used resin, organic compounds were hypothesised to be restricted to easily accessible exchange sites. Comparatively, virgin resin achieved higher DOC removals (86-89%) as resin fouling was absent. Charge density and the proportion of the hydrophobic fraction were found to be important indicators for the specific disinfection byproduct formation potential (DBP-FP). Treatment of raw water with pre-used resin decreased the specific DBP-FP by between 2 and 43%, while the use of virgin resin resulted in a reduction of between 31 and 63%. Goal: There is limited research on intracerebral hemorrhage in young urban populations. There is reduced access to healthcare and a high prevalence of multiple comorbidities in this vulnerable population. We studied the etiologies and outcomes of spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage in an urban North Philadelphia cohort aged 50 years old and younger., Materials and Methods: A retrospective chart review of subjects 50 years old and younger who presented with spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage at Temple University Hospital was conducted. A novel scoring system was used to classify the cause of each intracerebral hemorrhage. This system was used to assign a degree of likelihood that hypertension, amyloid angiopathy, tumor, oral anticoagulants, vascular malformations, infrequent causes, or cryptogenic etiologies were present. Aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage was excluded. The prevalence of each risk factor and outcomes were analyzed., Findings: Of the 110 patients in the study, the most common etiology was hypertension (82.7%). There was no statistically significant difference in mortality between patients with multiple possible etiologies for their hemorrhage. Vascular malformations and cavernomas were rare (5.5%)., Conclusions: Hypertension was the most common cause of intracerebral hemorrhage in a young urban population. The presence of multiple possible etiologies does not correlate with a worse prognosis of mortality. Flow cytometry (FCM) and the ability to measure both total and intact cell populations through DNA staining methodologies has rapidly gained attention and consideration across the water sector in the past decade. In this study, water quality monitoring was undertaken over three years across 213 drinking water treatment works (WTW) in the Scottish Water region (Total n = 39,340). Samples subject to routine regulatory microbial analysis using culture-based methods were also analysed using FCM. In addition to final treated water, the bacterial content in raw water was measured over a one-year period. Three WTW were studied in further detail using on-site inter-stage sampling and analysis with FCM. It was demonstrated that there was no clear link between FCM data and the coliform samples taken for regulatory monitoring. The disinfectant Ct value (Ct = mg·min/L) was the driving factor in determining final water cell viability and the proportion of intact cells (intact/total cells) and the frequency of coliform detections in the water leaving the WTW. However, the free chlorine residual, without consideration of treatment time, was shown to have little impact on coliform detections or cell counts. Amongst the three treatment trains monitored in detail, the membrane filtration WTW showed the greatest log removal and robustness in terms of final water intact cell counts. Ion exchange (IEX) can successfully remove natural organic matter (NOM) from surface water. However, the removal mechanism is not well understood due to the complexity and variability of NOM in real source waters as well as the influence of multiple parameters on the removal behavior. For example, this includes the physicochemical properties of the NOM and IEX resin, and the presence of competing anions. Model compounds with a range of physical and chemical characteristics were therefore used to determine the mechanisms of NOM removal by IEX resins. Fifteen model compounds were selected to evaluate the influence of hydrophobicity, size, and charge of organic molecules on the removal by ion exchange, both individually and in mixtures. Three different resins, comprising polystyrene and polyacrylic resin of macroporous and gellular structure, showed that charge density (CD) was the most important characteristic that controlled the removal, with CD of >5 mequiv mg DOC -1 resulting in high removal (≥89%). Size exclusion of compounds with high MW (≥8 kDa) was evident. The hydrophobicity of the resin and model compound was particularly important for removal of neutral molecules such as resorcinol, which was best removed by the more hydrophobic polystyrene resin. Relationships were identified that provided explanations of the interactions observed between NOM and IEX resin in real waters.

There are ongoing policy concerns surrounding the difficulty in obtaining timely appointments to primary healthcare services and the potential impact on, for example, attendance at accident and emergency services and potential health outcomes. Using the case study of potential access to primary healthcare services in Wales, Geographic Information System (GIS)-based tools that permit a consideration of population-to-provider ratios over space are used to examine variations in geographical accessibility to general practitioner (GP) surgeries offering appointment times outside of 'core' operating hours. Correlation analysis is used to explore the association of accessibility scores with potential demand for such services using UK Population Census data. Unlike the situation in England, there is a tendency for accessibility to those surgeries offering 'extended' hours of appointment times to be better for more deprived census areas in Wales. However, accessibility to surgeries offering appointments in the evening was associated with lower levels of working age population classed as 'economically active'; that is, those who could be targeted beneficiaries of policies geared towards 'extended' appointment hours provision. Such models have the potential to identify spatial mismatches of different facets of primary healthcare, such as 'extended' hours provision available at GP surgeries, and are worthy of further investigation, especially in relation to policies targeted at particular demographic groups., (© 2019 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.)

J Strength Cond Res 33(7S): S78-S84, 2019-The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of an 8-week barbell hip thrust strength training program on sprint performance. Twenty-one collegiate athletes (15 males and 6 females) were randomly assigned to either an intervention (n = 11, age 27.36 ± 3.17 years, height 169.55 ± 10.38 cm, mass 72.7 ± 18 kg) or control group (n = 10, age 27.2 ± 3.36 years, height 176.2 ± 7.94 cm, mass 76.39 ± 11.47 kg). One repetition maximum hip thrust, 40-m sprint time, and individual 10-m split timings: 0-10, 10-20, 20-30, and 30-40 m were the measured variables; these recorded at both the baseline and posttesting time points. After the 8-week hip thrust strength training intervention, significantly greater 1 repetition maximum (1RM) hip thrust scores for the training group were observed (p < 0.001, d = 0.77 [mean difference 44.09 kg]); however, this failed to translate into changes in sprint time for any of the measured distances (all sprint performance measures: p > 0.05, r = 0.05-0.37). No significant differences were seen for the control group for 1RM hip thrust (p = 0.106, d = 0.24 [mean difference 9.4 kg]) or sprint time (all sprint performance measures: p > 0.05, r = 0.13-0.47). These findings suggest that increasing maximum hip thrust strength through the use of the barbell hip thrust does not seem to transfer into improvements in sprint performance in collegiate level athletes.

Most commercial swimming pools use pressurised filters, typically containing sand media, to remove suspended solids as part of the water treatment process designed to keep water attractive, clean and safe. The accidental release of faecal material by bathers presents a poorly quantified risk to the safety of swimmers using the pool. The water treatment process usually includes a combination of maintaining a residual concentration of an appropriate biocide in the pool together with filtration to physically remove particles, including microbial pathogens, from the water. However, there is uncertainty about the effectiveness of treatment processes in removing all pathogens, and there has been growing concern about the number of reported outbreaks of the gastrointestinal disease cryptosporidiosis, caused by the chlorine-resistant protozoan parasite Cryptosporidium. A number of interacting issues influence the effectiveness of filtration for the removal of Cryptosporidium oocysts from swimming pools. This review explains the mechanisms by which filters remove particles of different sizes (including oocyst-sized particles, typically 4-6 μm), factors that affect the efficiency of particle removal (such as filtration velocity), current recommended management practices, and identifies further work to support the development of a risk-based management approach for the management of waterborne disease outbreaks from swimming pools.
