The COVID-19 pandemic's psychological impact prompted this study to investigate the inner child healing course's effectiveness in reducing fear of COVID-19 and improving emotional family relationships. This quasi-experimental research adopted a pretest-posttest design with a control group. Convenience sampling was employed to select 42 women randomly from five psychotherapy centers in Isfahan (Iran) in 2020. They were then randomly assigned to a control group (n = 21) and an experimental group (n = 21). The experimental group received the inner child healing course in six sessions, whereas the control group received no intervention. The Fear of COVID-19 Scale and the Emotional Family Relationships Questionnaire were utilized for data collection. Analysis of covariance was employed for data analysis using SPSS 25. Participants in the inner child healing group reported significantly higher mean scores on happiness (12.40 ± 1.11) compared to the control group (5.90 ± 2.24). This pattern of higher means in the inner child healing group persisted for freedom and intimacy in family relationships (11.50 ± 1.90 vs. 5.12 ± 1.60), trust in the family (13.61 ± 1.90 vs. 6.21 ± 2.04), and collaborative decision-making with family (12.34 ± 2.05 vs. 6.31 ± 1.80). Statistical analysis revealed significant effects of the inner child healing course on happiness ( p <.01), freedom and intimacy with family members ( p <.01), trust in family members ( p <.01), and collaborative decision-making with family members ( p <.01) in women. Notably, the intervention did not yield statistically significant effects on commitment and responsibility or fear of COVID-19 in this sample of married women. This suggests the inner child healing course may improve emotional well-being within families during COVID-19.

In this study, DOX (Doxorubicin) and Fe 3 O 4 magnetic nanocrystals (SPIONs (Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanocrystals)) were encapsulated in the PLGA-PEG: poly(lactide-co-glycolide)-b-poly(ethylene glycol) nanoparticles for theranostic purposes. The final prepared formulation which is called NPs (Nanoparticles) exhibited a particle size with a mean diameter of ~ 209 nm and a sufficient saturation magnetization value of 1.65 emu/g. The NPs showed faster DOX release at pH 5.5 compared to pH 7.4. Also, the cytotoxicity effect of NPs increased compared to Free-DOX alone in C6 glioma cancer cells. For in vivo investigations, the 2.2 Kg rabbits were injected with NPs formulations via a central articular anterior vein in their ears. Furthermore, the images of rabbit organs were depicted via MR (Magnetic resonance) and fluorescent imaging techniques. A negative contrast (dark signal) was observed in T 2 (Relaxation Time) weighted MR images of IV (Intravenously)-injected rabbits with NPs compared to the control ones. The organ's florescent images of NPs-injected rabbits showed a high density of red color related to the accumulation of DOX in liver and kidney organs. These data showed that the NPs have no cytotoxicity effect on the heart. Also, the results of histopathological tests of different organs showed that the groups receiving NPs and Free-DOX were almost similar and no significant difference was seen, except for the cardiac tissue in which the pathological effects of NPs were significantly less than the Free-DOX. Additionally, pharmacokinetic studies were also conducted at the sera and whole bloods of IV-injected rabbits with NPs and Free-DOX. The pharmacokinetic parameters showed that NPs could enhance the DOX retention in the serum compared to the Free-DOX. Objectives: This study compared the effects of conventional, ultrasonic, and laser-activated irrigation (LAI) on penetration depth of three photosensitizers (PSs) in the root canal system., Materials and Methods: In this in vitro, experimental study, 120 extracted anterior teeth were decoronated such that the remaining root length was standardized at 12 mm. After root canal instrumentation with the ProTaper rotary system and irrigation with 5.25% NaOCl, the roots were assigned to 12 groups for the application of toluidine blue (TB), curcumin, and phycocyanin PSs combined with the LAI using erbium laser with 0.4 mm and 0.6 mm tips, ultrasonic activation, and conventional irrigation. The specimens were sectioned apicocoronally, and the dye penetration depth was quantified in the coronal, middle, and apical thirds under a stereomicroscope at x20 magnification. Data were analyzed by the Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn test (alpha=0.05)., Results: The effects of irrigation technique, PS type, and their interaction on dye penetration depth were significant at the apical, middle, and coronal thirds (P < 0.0001). TB + LAI with 0.4- and 0.6-mm laser tips showed the highest penetration depth while phycocyanin + LAI or conventional irrigation showed the lowest penetration depth at all areas. Dye penetration depth was the highest in the coronal, and the lowest in the apical third., Conclusion: The LAI technique with erbium laser (0.4- and 0.6-mm tips) enhanced the penetration depth of TB. Purpose: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), electric compound action potential (eCAP), and electric auditory brainstem response (eABR) are among the routine assessments performed before and/or after cochlear implantation. The objective of this review was to systematically summarize and critically appraise existing evidence of the prognostic value of eCAP, eABR, and MRI for predicting post-cochlear implant (CI) speech perception outcomes in children, with a particular focus on the lesion site., Method: The present systematic review was conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses 2020 statement. Three electronic databases (ProQuest, PubMed, and Scopus) were searched with no restrictions on language, publication status, or year of publication. Studies on children identified with sensorineural hearing loss, auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder, cochlear nerve deficiency, or cochleovestibular nerve abnormalities reporting the relevance of eCAP, eABR, and/or MRI results to CI speech perception outcomes were included. The literature search yielded 1,887 publications. Methodological quality and strength of evidence were assessed by the Crowe Critical Appraisal Tool and the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation tool, respectively., Results: Of the 25 included studies, the relevance of eCAP, eABR, and/or MRI findings to post-CI speech perception outcomes was reported in 10, 11, and 11 studies, respectively. The studies were strongly in support of the prognostic value of eABR and MRI for CI outcomes. Objectives: Current evidence supports the benefits of cochlear implants (CIs) in children with hearing loss, including those with auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder (ANSD). However, there is limited evidence regarding factors that hold predictive value for intervention outcomes., Design: This retrospective case-control study consisted of 66 children with CIs, including 22 with ANSD and 44 with sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) matched on sex, age, age at CI activation, and the length of follow-up with CIs (1:2 ratio). The case and control groups were compared in the results of five open-set speech perception tests, and a Forward Linear Regression Model was used to identify factors that can predict the post-CI outcomes., Results: There was no significant difference in average scores between the two groups across five outcome measures, ranging from 88.40% to 95.65%. The correlation matrix revealed that younger ages at hearing aid fitting and CI activation positively influenced improvements in speech perception test scores. Furthermore, among the variables incorporated in the regression model, the duration of follow-up with CIs, age at CI activation, and the utilization of two CIs demonstrated prognostic significance for improved post-CI speech perception outcomes., Conclusions: Children with ANSD can achieve similar open-set speech perception outcomes as children with SNHL. Background: Studies have shown short-term and long-term positive effects of family-centred care interventions on neonatal and maternal health, and developmental outcomes in neonatal intensive care units. However, some challenges and barriers limit implementation of family-centred care., Aim: To investigate parental barriers to implementing family-centred care in a neonatal intensive care unit in Islamic Republic of Iran., Methods: A conventional content analysis was conducted at a neonatal intensive care unit in Tehran, Islamic Republic of Iran from 2020 to 2021. Twenty semi-structured interviews and 9 field notes were conducted. The interview data were analysed using the Graneheim and Lundman method and the demographic data were analysed using SPSS version 21., Findings: Two themes emerged from the data analysis. The first theme was "inefficiency of playing the parental role", with 2 main categories of "face unpleasant feelings" and "inappropriate presence and participation". The second theme was "ineffective involvement of parents in the care", with 3 main categories of "lack of effective communication with personnel", "interference of parents in the treatment process", and "given insufficient information by parents"., Conclusion: Parental barriers to the provision of family-centred care featured prominently in the study. Background: This study examined the proportion of Iranian children who met the World Health Organization (WHO) Guidelines for physical activity, sedentary behaviour and sleep for children under 5 years. Additionally, it investigated the feasibility and acceptability of the methods to be used in the SUNRISE study., Methods: This pilot study was conducted among 83 children aged 3 and 4 years in preschools and health care centres in Iran, in 2022. Physical activity, sedentary behaviour and sleep (ActiGraph wGT3x-BT); fine and gross motor skills (validated activities); and executive functions (the Early Years Toolbox) were assessed., Results: Only four (4.8%) children met all recommendations of the WHO guidelines. The proportion of children who met MVPA, TPA, screen time, restrained sitting and sleep were 44.6%, 38.6%, 19.3%, 38.6% and 65.1%, respectively. Fifty-two (62.6%) children wore the ActiGraph for at least three full days. A total of 97.6%, 95.1% and 91.5% of children completed anthropometric, EF and motor skill assessments, respectively., Conclusion: This pilot study was feasible and acceptable among Iranian children. Auditory deprivation following congenital/pre-lingual deafness (C/PD) can drastically affect brain development and its functional organisation. This systematic review intends to extend current knowledge of the impact of C/PD and deafness duration on brain resting-state networks (RSNs), review changes in RSNs and spoken language outcomes post-cochlear implant (CI) and draw conclusions for future research. The systematic literature search followed the PRISMA guideline. Two independent reviewers searched four electronic databases using combined keywords: 'auditory deprivation', 'congenital/prelingual deafness', 'resting-state functional connectivity' (RSFC), 'resting-state fMRI' and 'cochlear implant'. Seventeen studies (16 cross-sectional and one longitudinal) met the inclusion criteria. Using the Crowe Critical Appraisal Tool, the publications' quality was rated between 65.0% and 92.5% (mean: 84.10%), ≥80% in 13 out of 17 studies. A few studies were deficient in sampling and/or ethical considerations. According to the findings, early auditory deprivation results in enhanced RSFC between the auditory network and brain networks involved in non-verbal communication, and high levels of spontaneous neural activity in the auditory cortex before CI are evidence of occupied auditory cortical areas with other sensory modalities (cross-modal plasticity) and sub-optimal CI outcomes. Medical image segmentation is a critical task in computer vision because of facilitating precise identification of regions of interest in medical images. This task plays an important role in disease diagnosis and treatment planning. In recent years, deep learning algorithms have exhibited remarkable performance in this domain. However, it is important to note that there are still unresolved issues, including challenges related to class imbalance and achieving higher levels of accuracy. Considering the challenges, we propose a novel approach to the semantic segmentation of medical images. In this study, a new sampling method to handle class imbalance in the medical datasets is proposed that ensures a comprehensive understanding of both abnormal tissues and background characteristics. Additionally, we propose a novel loss function inspired by exponential loss, which operates at the pixel level. To enhance segmentation performance further, we present an ensemble model comprising two UNet models with ResNet backbone. The initial model is trained on the primary dataset, while the second model is trained on the dataset obtained through our sampling method. The predictions of both models are combined using an ensemble model. We have assessed the effectiveness of our approach using three publicly available datasets: Kvasir-SEG, FLAIR MRI Low-Grade Glioma (LGG), and ISIC 2018 datasets. In our evaluation, we have compared the performance of our loss function against four different loss functions. Background: Eradication of endodontic biofilms from the infected root canal system is still the main concern in endodontics. In this study, the role of the power density parameter in the efficacy of antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (PDT) with toluidine blue O (TBO) and phycocyanin (PC) activated by a 635 nm diode laser (DL) against Enterococcus faecalis biofilm in the root canal model was investigated., Materials and Methods: The E. faecalis biofilm in the root canal was treated with TBO and PC with different power densities (636, 954, 1273, and 1592 W/cm 2 ). The untreated biofilm represented the control group. After the treatments, the biofilms were analyzed based on the number of colonies per milliliter., Results: TBO and PC activated with 635 nm DL with a power density of 1592 W/cm 2 were more efficient in removing E. faecalis biofilms within the root canals than those with a power density of 636 W/cm 2 (p = 0.00)., Conclusion: The light power density optimized the bacterial reduction of E. faecalis biofilms in the root canal spaces. Colorectal cancer (CRC) is deadly anaplastic changes in the gastrointestinal tract with high-rate mortality. In recent years, the application of phytocompounds has been extended along with different therapeutic protocols. Here, we monitored the effects of Thymoquinone (TQ) on autophagy via mitochondrial function after modulation of the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway.Human colorectal adenocarcinoma HT-29 cells were treated with TQ (60 µM) and 15 µM Wnt3a inhibitor (LGK974) for 48 h. The survival rate was evaluated using an MTT assay. The expression of Wnt-related factors (c-Myc, and Axin), angiogenesis (VE-Cadherin), and mitophagy-related factors (PINK1, OPTN) was assessed using real-time PCR assay. Protein levels of autophagy factors (Beclin-1, LC3, and P62) were monitored using western blotting. Using flow cytometry analysis, the intracellular accumulation of Rhodamine 123 was evaluated. The migration properties were analyzed using a scratch wound healing assay.Data indicated that TQ can reduce the viability of HT-29 cells compared to the control cells (p < 0.05). The expression of VE-Cadherin was inhibited while the expression of PINK1 was induced in treated cells (p < 0.05). Both LGK974 and TQ-treated cells exhibited activation of autophagy flux (Beclin-1↑, LC3II/I↑, and p62↓) compared to the control group (p < 0.05). TQ can increase intracellular accumulation of Rhodamine 123, indicating the inhibition of efflux mechanisms in cancer cells. Amniotic membrane (AM), the innermost layer of the placenta, is an exceptionally effective biomaterial with divers applications in clinical medicine. It possesses various biological functions, including scar reduction, anti-inflammatory properties, support for epithelialization, as well as anti-microbial, anti-fibrotic and angio-modulatory effects. Furthermore, its abundant availability, cost-effectiveness, and ethical acceptability make it a compelling biomaterial in the field of medicine. Given the potential unavailability of fresh tissue when needed, the preservation of AM is crucial to ensure a readily accessible and continuous supply for clinical use. However, preserving the properties of AM presents a significant challenge. Therefore, the establishment of standardized protocols for the collection and preservation of AM is vital to ensure optimal tissue quality and enhance patient safety. Various preservation methods, such as cryopreservation, lyophilization, and air-drying, have been employed over the years. However, identifying a preservation method that effectively safeguards AM properties remains an ongoing endeavor. Background: The present study aimed to evaluate the impacts of lavender and metformin on polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) patients., Methods: We performed a randomized, double-blind clinical trial including 68 females aged 18 to 45, fulfilling the Rotterdam criteria for PCOS. The patients were randomized to receive lavender (250 mg twice daily) or metformin (500 mg three times a day) for 90 days. The serum progesterone was measured at baseline and after 90 days, one week before their expected menstruation. Moreover, the length of the menstrual cycle was documented., Results: Our results showed that lavender and metformin treatment notably increased the progesterone levels in PCOS patients (increasing from 0.35 (0.66) and 0.8 (0.69) to 2.5 (6.2) and 2.74 (6.27) ng/mL, respectively, P < 0.001). However, we found no significant differences between the increasing effects of both treatments on progesterone levels. In addition, all patients in the lavender or metformin groups had baseline progesterone levels <3 ng/mL, reaching 14 (45.2%) patients >3 ng/mL. Lavender and metformin remarkably attenuated the menstrual cycle length in PCOS patients (decreasing from 56.0 (20.0) and 60 (12.0) to 42.0 (5.0) and 50.0 (14.0) days, respectively, P < 0.001). Furthermore, the decreasing effects of lavender on the menstrual cycle length were greater than the metformin group; however, it was not statistically significant (P = 0.06)., Conclusion: Lavender effectively increased progesterone levels and regulated the menstrual cycles in PCOS patients, similar to metformin. Introduction: This study aimed to assess the fracture resistance of mandibular first molars after preparation with 3 different access cavity designs and 2 rotary systems using finite element analysis., Methods: Six 3-dimensionally printed mandibular first molars simulating natural teeth received traditional, conservative, and ultraconservative (truss) access cavity preparations. The root canals in each group were instrumented with either XP-Endo Shaper (FKG Dentaire, La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland) or TruNatomy (Dentsply Sirona, Ballaigues, Switzerland) rotary files. The models were individually digitized, and micro-computed tomographic scans were transferred to Mimics software (Materialise NV, Leuven, Belgium) to create a geometric model of the tooth. The designed model was exported to 3-matic software (Materialise NV), and STL files were transferred to Geomagic Design X (3D Systems, Rock Hill, SC). Point cloud data were used for surfacing and transferred to ANSYS software (Ansys, Canonsburg, PA). A 200-N superficial force was applied vertically to the buccal cusps and central fossa, and the maximum and minimum equivalent von Mises stress values were calculated and reported., Results: The traditional and ultraconservative access cavity designs yielded the highest and the lowest von Mises stress values, respectively. In the ultraconservative cavity design, the stress values in pericervical dentin were lower in canal preparation with TruNatomy compared with XP-Endo Shaper. In the traditional and conservative cavity designs, stress was lower in the first 2 mm from the cementoenamel junction in the XP-Endo Shaper group and in the next 3 mm in the TruNatomy group., Conclusions: Stress was lower in the ultraconservative and conservative cavity designs compared with the traditional design. Purpose: The objective of this overview of systematic reviews (SRs; umbrella review) was to systematically summarize and critically appraise current evidence of cochlear implant (CI) outcomes in children with auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder (ANSD)., Method: This study was guided by the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses 2020 statement. The methodological quality and the risk of bias in the included SRs were assessed using A MeaSurement Tool to Assess systematic Reviews 2 checklist and the Risk of Bias in Systematic Reviews tool, respectively., Results: According to eight included SRs, children with ANSD achieve CI outcomes (speech perception performance) similar to their peers with sensorineural hearing loss. In children with postsynaptic ANSD (cochlear nerve deficiency), cochlear nerve hypoplasia is associated with better speech recognition outcomes compared with cochlear nerve aplasia, especially in the absence of additional disabilities. Except for one study, the overall quality of the included SRs was critically low, and except for three studies, evidence of a high risk of bias was identified in other included SRs., Conclusions: Current evidence supports CI benefits for children with ANSD. To improve the quality of evidence, well-designed, prospective studies with appropriate sample sizes, using valid outcome measures, clarifying matching criteria, and taking into account the role of confounding factors are essential.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is associated with cerebral plaques and tangles, reduced synapse number, and shrinkage in several brain areas and these morphological effects are associated with the onset of compromised cognitive, motor, and anxiety-like behaviours. The appearance of both anatomical and behavioural symptoms is worsened by stress. The focus of this study was to examine the effect of neonatal tactile stimulation on AD-like behavioural and neurological symptoms on APP NL-G-F/NL-G-F mice, a mouse model of AD, who have been gestationally stressed. Our findings indicate that neonatal tactile stimulation improves cognition, motor skills, and anxiety-like symptoms in both gestationally stressed and non-stressed adult APP mice and that these alterations are associated with reduced Aβ plaque formation. Current evidence supports the link between hearing loss and Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, few studies report the hearing status of AD mice compared to wild-type mice. This study aimed to compare hearing thresholds and short-term memory (STM) performance of an AD (APP NL-G-F ) mouse model of amyloid-beta (Aꞵ) pathology with C57BL/6 J and CBA/CaJ mice across age. The auditory brainstem response (ABR) test, using click and five tone-burst (TB) stimuli, was recorded at 2, 4, 6, 9, and 12 months. The novel object recognition (NOR) test, a measure of STM, was conducted at 6 and 12 months. While hearing thresholds were almost preserved in CBA/CaJ mice, they were not recorded at high frequencies with age in C57BL/6 J and AD mice, leading to island hearing (severe to profound hearing loss) at 9 and 12 months. AD mice showed increased hearing thresholds in TB8 and TB16 kHz at 6 and 9 months compared to C57BL/6 J mice. NOR findings were evidence of impaired STM in both C57BL/6 J and AD mice relative to CBA/CaJ mice, and a relationship was found between hearing thresholds and NOR measures in three groups. Background: Despite significant advances in the quality and delivery of specialized stroke care, there still persist remarkable spatial variations in emergency medical services (EMS) transport delays, stroke incidence, and its outcomes. Therefore, it is very important to investigate the possible geographical variations of in-hospital stroke mortality and to identify its associated factors., Methods: This historical cohort study included suspected stroke cases transferred to Ghaem Hospital of Mashhad by the EMS from March 2018 to March 2019. Using emergency mission IDs, the pre-hospital emergency data were integrated with the patient medical records in the hospital. We used the Bayesian approach for estimating the model parameters., Results: Out of 301 patients (142 (47.2%) females vs. 159 (52.8%) males) with a final diagnosis of stroke, 61 (20.3%) cases had in-hospital mortality. Results from Bayesian spatial log-logistic proportional odds (PO) model showed that age (PO=1.07), access rate to EMS (PO=0.78), arrival time (evening shift vs. day shift, PO=0.09), and sequelae variables (PO=9.20) had a significant association with the odds of in-hospital stroke mortality ( P <0.05). Furthermore, the odds of in-hospital stroke mortality were higher in central urban areas compared to suburban areas., Conclusion: Marked regional variations were found in the odds of in-hospital stroke mortality in Mashhad. There was a direct association between age and odds of in-hospital stroke mortality. Hence, the prognosis of in-hospital stroke mortality could be improved by better control of hypertension, prevention of the occurrence of sequelae, increasing the access rate to EMS, and optimizing shift work schedule., (© 2023 The Author(s). In this project, a three-dimensional graphene oxide coated agarose/chitosan (ACGO) porous film was synthesized and utilized as sorbent in thin film microextraction (TFME) technique to extract 4-chlorophenol, 2,4-dichlorophenol, 3,5-dichlorophenol and 2,4,6-trichlorophenol as the model analytes in various real samples such as agricultural waste water, honey and tea samples. In addition, deep eutectic solvent made of tetra ethyl ammonium chloride/chlorine chloride was used as a desorption solvent. The effect of various variables, such as: extraction time, stirring rate, solvent desorption volume, desorption time, ionic strength and solution pH on the extraction efficiency of the method was studied and optimized. Under the optimized condition, the linear range of the method was obtained in the range of 0.1-500μgL -1 for testing analytes (4-chloropheol=0.1-500μgL -1 , 2,4-dichlorophenol=0.2-500μgL -1 , 3,5-dichlorophenol=0.5-500μgL -1 and 2,4,6-trichlorophenol=0.2-500μgL -1 ). The obtained correlation coefficients (r 2 ) were between 0.9984 and 0.9994. The limits of detection (LODs) were also calculated between 0.03 - 0.13μgL -1 . The relative standard deviations (RSDs%) were obtained in the range of 2.8 to 5.9%. The enrichment factor (EFs) values for the studied analytes were also obtained in the range of 33.4-35.8. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is one of the largest health crises in the world. There are limited pharmaceutical interventions to treat AD, however, and most of the treatment options are not for cure or prevention, but rather to slow down the progression of the disease. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of tactile stimulation (TS) on AD-like symptoms and pathology in APP NL-G-F/NL-G-F mice, a mouse model of AD. The results show that TS reduces the AD-like symptoms on tests of cognition, motor, and anxiety-like behaviors and these improvements in behavior are associated with reduced AD pathology in APP mice. Introduction: Human amniotic membrane (hAM) and its cells have been proposed for several clinical applications, including cancer therapy. However, reports on the anticancer effects of human amniotic epithelial stem cells-conditioned media (hAECs-CM) are limited. This work aims to evaluate the anticancer effects of hAECs-CM on cervical cancer and breast cancer cell lines in vitro ., Methods: Human term placentas were gained from uncomplicated Cesarean sections from healthy donor women. After amnion peeling from the chorion, its epithelial stem cells were isolated and cultured, and its conditioned medium (CM) was collected for experiments. MTT assay was performed to assess cancer cells viability. Migration rate of cancer cells was examined via wound healing assay. Cell-cycle distribution and apoptosis were determined using flow cytometry., Results: Based on MTT assay hAECs-CM was cytotoxic against cancerous cell lines in a dose-time-dependent manner. After 48 h of treatment with hAECs-CM pure, the cell viability of breast cancer cells includes MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 reached to 73.2% and 65.5%, respectively. In the same situation, HeLa cervical cancer cell line revealed the lowest viability by 47.3%. The wound-healing assay displayed an incomplete wound closure of scratched MDA-MB-231 cells and significant inhibition of cell migration after hAECs-CM treatment. The results also revealed that hAECs-CM exerted anti-proliferation activity by prompting cell cycle arrest and apoptosis of cancer cells.Conclusions: hAECs-CM is a potent candidate for inducing apoptosis and simultaneously inhibition of the proliferation and migration of cancer cells via inhibiting cell cycle blockade.

Herein, polydopamine-coated Fe 3 O 4 spheres were synthesized using a very simple, easy, cost-effective, efficient, and fast method. First, magnetic nanoparticles (Fe 3 O 4 ) were synthesized and were followed by accommodating polydopamine on the surface of the prepared Fe 3 O 4 . The prepared polydopamine-coated Fe 3 O 4 spheres were utilized as a sorbent in magnetic solid phase extraction of gemfibrozil and warfarin (as the model analytes). The extracted model analytes were desorbed by a suitable organic solvent and were analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography. Under optimized condition, the linearity of the method was in the range of 0.1-200.0 μg/L for the selected analytes in water. The limits of detection were calculated to be in the range of 0.026-0.055 μg/L for warfarin and gemfibrozil, respectively. The limits of quantification were calculated to be in the range of 0.089-0.185 μg/L. The inter-day and intra-day relative standard deviations were determined to be in the range of 1.4%-3.3% in three concentrations in order to calculate the method precision. Furthermore, the enrichment factors were found to be 78 and 81 for warfarin and gemfibrozil, respectively. Moreover, the calculated absolute recoveries were between 78% and 81%. Objectives: Current evidence supports the growing application of extended high-frequency (EHF: 9 to 20 kHz) audiometry in hearing research, which likely results from the high vulnerability of this frequency region to damage induced by known auditory risk factors. The present systematic review and meta-analysis were performed to investigate whether adults with a normal audiogram and tinnitus show increased EHF hearing thresholds relative to control peers., Design: A comprehensive search was undertaken on electronic databases consisting of PubMed, ScienceDirect, Wiley, and Google Scholar using combined keywords: "tinnitus," "extended high frequency," "normal audiogram," and "hidden hearing loss.", Results: From 261 articles found by searching databases, nine studies met the inclusion criteria for the meta-analysis. A significant difference was observed between tinnitus and control groups in the effect size analysis of hearing thresholds at 10, 12.5, 14, 16, and 18 kHz ( p ≤ 0.001), and the I-square heterogeneity analysis was below 50% in all studies ( p ≥ 0.131). Visual inspection by the Funnel plot and Egger's regression test ( p ≥ 0.211) also exhibited no publication bias in the meta-analyses., Conclusions: Our findings are in support of the idea that in most cases, tinnitus is associated with some degree of cochlear mechanical dysfunction, which may not be detected by conventional audiometry alone. Purpose: Whereas chronic noise exposure (CNE) is a known risk factor for tinnitus, little is known about how a history of CNE impacts tinnitus characteristics and its comorbid symptoms., Methods: Seventy-five participants with chronic tinnitus (59m/16f, 22-78 years, 48 with sensory-neural hearing loss, and 27 with a normal audiogram) including 43 individuals with (Tin-CNE group) and 32 without (Tin group) a history of long-term occupational noise exposure were studied. Tinnitus characteristics were rated by a visual analog scale, and tinnitus comorbid symptoms were scored using self-assessment questionnaires., Results: The Tin-CNE group showed reduced uncomfortable loudness level (ULL), sound tolerance, and quality of life (QoL), and increased tinnitus loudness, tinnitus handicap, anxiety, depression, insomnia severity, and tinnitus annoyance scores compared to the Tin group. Higher tinnitus loudness and a lower anxiety score were observed in participants with hearing loss relative to those without. Using a stepwise regression model also showed that tinnitus-related characteristics, hyperacusis, and tinnitus comorbid symptoms enhance one another., Conclusions: The findings were in support of accumulative evidence indicating the adverse auditory and non-auditory effects of CNE, including exacerbated sound intolerance and tinnitus-related psychiatric symptoms. Objectives: Although various studies have revealed the beneficial effects of crocin (derived from saffron), such as anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, antioxidant, and immune modulator, however, its exact mechanism is unknown. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of crocin on the expression ratio of T-bet/GATA-3 as an indicator of altered immune responses in the lung tissue of ovalbumin (OVA)-sensitized mice. In addition, the effect of crocin on the expression level of miR-146a and miR-106a in the lung tissue OVA-sensitized mice was investigated., Materials and Methods: Mice were randomly divided into five groups (n=6): Control; OVA, OVA + Crocin 25, OVA + Cro 50, and OVA + Cro100 groups. Crocin was administrated intraperitoneally at doses of 25, 50, and 100 mg/kg for five consecutive days. One day after asthma induction, animals were euthanized, and lungs were sampled for pathological and gene expression analysis., Results: OVA-sensitization led to increased inflammation and histopathological changes in the lung tissue of mice. In addition, GATA-3 expression increased ( P <0.001) and T-bet expression decreased ( P <0.001) in OVA-sensitized groups. The T-bet/GATA3 ratio was also reduced markedly in asthma groups ( P <0.001). Furthermore, increased expression of miR-146a and miR-106a levels was evident in the lung tissue of OVA-sensitized mice ( P <0.001 for both). Intervention with high concentrations of crocin (50 and 100 mg/kg) significantly reduced airway inflammation, GATA-3 expression, miR-146a expression, and miR-106a expression and corrected the T-bet/GATA-3 ratio ( P <0.05 to P <0.001)., Conclusion: Treatment with crocin led to a decrease in the severity of lung inflammation in OVA-sensitized mice, which is probably through the reduction of the T-bet/GATA-3 ratio, and mir-146a and mir-106a expression level., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that there are no conflicts of interest.

The effects of phosphorylation pre-treatments at 1.5, 2.5, and 3.5% levels, as well as microwave application at 200, 400, and 700 watts levels for 2 min, on the functional parameters of egg white powder obtained by the freeze dryer procedure were investigated. P1.5-M200 had the highest oil-holding capacity, emulsion stability, and emulsion activity, while P2.5-M200 had the highest foam capacity. The P2.5-M400 had the largest particle size, and P3.5-M200 had the highest degree of phosphorylation and protein solubility. On the other hand, P3.5-M200 had the highest solution viscosity by 1% ( w / v ), water-holding capacity, and foam stability, in the treatments that used phosphorylation and microwave treatment simultaneously. FTIR spectroscopy of the unfolding structure of egg white protein revealed changes in the protein's secondary structure, such as the development of β-sheets and β-turns, as well as the binding of negatively charged phosphate groups on the serine, threonine, and tyrosine side chains. The phosphorylation and microwave treatments reduced the particle size of the egg white protein powder while increasing the surface area of the protein molecules, according to SEM analyses.

Objectives: Extensive studies indicate that severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) involves human sensory systems. A lack of discussion, however, exists given the auditory-vestibular system involvement in CoV disease 2019 (COVID-19). The present systematic review and meta-analysis were performed to determine the event rate (ER) of hearing loss, tinnitus, and dizziness caused by SARS-CoV-2., Methods: Databases (PubMed, ScienceDirect, Wiley) and World Health Organization updates were searched using combined keywords: 'COVID-19,' 'SARS-CoV-2,' 'pandemic,' 'auditory dysfunction,' 'hearing loss,' 'tinnitus,' 'vestibular dysfunction,' 'dizziness,' 'vertigo,' and 'otologic symptoms.', Results: Twelve papers met the eligibility criteria and were included in the study. These papers were single group prospective, cross-sectional, or retrospective studies on otolaryngologic, neurologic, or general clinical symptoms of COVID-19 and had used subjective assessments for data collection (case histories/medical records). The results of the meta-analysis demonstrate that the ER of hearing loss (3.1%, CIs: 0.01-0.09), tinnitus (4.5%, CIs: 0.012-0.153), and dizziness (12.2%, CIs: 0.070-0.204) is statistically significant in patients with COVID-19 (Z ≤ -4.469, p ≤ 0.001)., Conclusions: COVID-19 can cause hearing loss, tinnitus, and dizziness. These findings, however, should be interpreted with caution given insufficient evidence and heterogeneity among studies. Well-designed studies and follow-up assessments on otologic symptoms of SARS-CoV-2 using standard objective tests are recommended.

An environmentally friendly magnetic solid phase extraction method was developed based on magnetic chitosan-graphene oxide nanoparticles and deep eutectic solvents (DESs) for the pre-concentration and isolation of flavonoids (apigenin, morin, naringenin, and quercetin) of natural orange juice, commercial apple juice, onion juice, green tea, and natural apple juice samples. DESs via hydrophilic and π-π interactions could increase the extraction performance. The immobilization of chitosan-graphene oxide on the surface of Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles improved their chemical properties and mechanical stability. In addition, the prepared magnetic nanoparticles with the hydrophilic polymeric network and the high surface area of the graphene oxide increased the access of binding sites and extraction performance. The use of DESs as desorption of solvent and the individual properties of MANPs provided the ability for high extraction recovery and accelerates the time to reach equilibrium. The principal variables that influence microextraction efficiency, including the extraction time, type of DES, stirring rate, desorption time, type of eluent solvent, and pH of the sample solution, were screened via the Plackett-Burman design and then the variables were optimized by the Box-Behnken design. Under the optimum conditions obtained, the developed method showed a good working range ( R 2 ≥ 0.9962). The limit of detection (LOD) and the limit of quantification (LOQ) ranged from 0.03 μg L -1 (morin) to 0.14 μg L -1 (naringenin) and from 0.09 μg L -1 (morin) to 0.46 μg L -1 (naringenin) variables, respectively. The intraday precision was in the range of 4.1-4.8. In order to experiment with the precision and applicability of the MSPE-DES method, spiking recovery studies were performed in beverages and vegetable samples (natural orange juice, onion juice, commercial apple juice, natural apple juice, and green tea). The recovery results for real samples were calculated as 90-102%.

The past decade marked the beginning of the use of resting-state functional connectivity (RSFC) imaging in bilingualism studies. This paper intends to review the latest evidence of changes in RSFC in language and cognitive control networks in bilinguals during adulthood, aging, and early Alzheimer's disease, which can add to our understanding of brain functional reshaping in the context of second language (L2) acquisition. Because of high variability in bilingual experience, recent studies mostly focus on the role of the main aspects of bilingual experience (age of acquisition (AoA), language proficiency, and language usage) on intrinsic functional connectivity (FC). Existing evidence accounts for stronger FC in simultaneous rather than sequential bilinguals in language and control networks, and the modulation of the AoA impact by language proficiency and usage. Studies on older bilingual adults show stronger FC in language and frontoparietal networks and preserved FC in posterior brain regions, which can protect the brain against cognitive decline and neurodegenerative processes. Altered RSFC in language and control networks subsequent to L2 training programs also is associated with improved global cognition in older adults. Extensive evidence supports the association between age-related hearing loss (ARHL) and cognitive decline. It is, however, unknown whether a causal relationship exists between these two, or whether they both result from shared mechanisms. This paper intends to study this relationship through a comprehensive review of MRI findings as well as evidence of cellular alterations. Our review of structural MRI studies demonstrates that ARHL is independently linked to accelerated atrophy of total and regional brain volumes and reduced white matter integrity. Resting-state and task-based fMRI studies on ARHL also show changes in spontaneous neural activity and brain functional connectivity; and alterations in brain areas supporting auditory, language, cognitive, and affective processing independent of age, respectively. Although MRI findings support a causal relationship between ARHL and cognitive decline, the contribution of potential shared mechanisms should also be considered. In this regard, the review of cellular evidence indicates their role as possible common mechanisms underlying both age-related changes in hearing and cognition. Prenatal stress (PS) can impact fetal brain structure and function and contribute to higher vulnerability to neurodevelopmental and neuropsychiatric disorders. To understand how PS alters evoked and spontaneous neocortical activity and intrinsic brain functional connectivity, mesoscale voltage imaging was performed in adult C57BL/6NJ mice that had been exposed to auditory stress on gestational days 12-16, the age at which neocortex is developing. PS mice had a four-fold higher basal corticosterone level and reduced amplitude of cortical sensory-evoked responses to visual, auditory, whisker, forelimb, and hindlimb stimuli. Relative to control animals, PS led to a general reduction of resting-state functional connectivity, as well as reduced inter-modular connectivity, enhanced intra-modular connectivity, and altered frequency of auditory and forelimb spontaneous sensory motifs. These resting-state changes resulted in a cortical connectivity pattern featuring disjoint but tight modules and a decline in network efficiency. The adsorption property of Sumatriptan drug onto graphene oxide (GO) was studied using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. All possible initial positions of drug adsorption were considered to find out which one is energetically favorable. According to the achieved findings, the stronger interactions occurred between the positively polarized parts of the Sumatriptan (i.e. hydrogen atoms of the-OH and -NH parts) and negatively polarized oxygen atoms of the GO. The presence of non-covalent interactions of GO and Sumatriptan was confirmed based on the determined geometrical parameters, electronic structure analysis results, and adsorption energies. Different parameters such as frontier molecular orbital (FMO), natural bond orbital (NBO), dipole moment, and solation energy were investigated. Global indices such as hardness, softness, chemical potential, and electrophilicity of all systems were calculated and compared. The adsorption energy values were determined within the range of -8.39 to -10.59 kcal/mol (-1.87 to -5.67 BSSE corrected) in the water solvent for different adsorption geometries. The obtained results show that GO can act as a promising carrier/sensor for Sumatriptan drug in practical application.Communicated by Ramaswamy H. Sarma.

Background: Aging is a major challenge not only for high-income countries but also for middle- and low-income countries. The length of stay (LOS) in hospitals is one of the major concerns of elderly patients, which should be taken into consideration. We aimed to investigate the factors affecting LOS of elderly patients admitted to a referral hospital of northeast of Iran. Methods: A relatively large population of 7130 hospitalized elderly patients (over 65 years old) who referred to Ghaem hospital (Mashhad, Iran) from March 20, 2016 to March 19, 2017 were selected. The demographic and medical records data of patients were extracted from the hospital database. Univariate analyses as well as count regression models, including poisson regression and negative binomial regression, were conducted to assess the influential factors on the LOS and the number of admissions considered for potential confounders using SAS software. In this study α =0.05 was considered as statistically significant. Results: The mean age of participants was 76.57±7.29 years, and 54.8% were male and 45.2% were female. The mean LOS was 8.11±13.97 days and the mean number of admissions 1.5±1.73 times. The negative binomial regression model had better fitness than Poisson's model. Findings indicated that emergency hospitalization (RR: 0.21), admission to the CCU (RR: 0.33), and male gender (RR: 0.92) were statistically reducing factors for LOS among elderly patients, respectively. Discharge status (deceased, RR: 1.50), patients with diagnosis of injuries and poisoning (RR: 1.34), and native residence (RR: 1.10) were factors that statistically increased the length of stay among hospitalized elderly patients. An effective, sensitive, relatively fast, and cost-effective method was developed to determine two types of selected organophosphorus pesticides (OPPs) including diazinon and chlorpyrifos in apple, peach, and four different water samples (river, sea, well, and agriculture wastewater samples) through applying poly(amidoamine)@graphene oxide-reinforced polyvinylidene difluoride thin-film microextraction (PAMAM@GO-PVDF-TFME). The extracted analytes were desorbed via organic solvent and determined using high-performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet detection (HPLC-UV). The strong interactions between the sorbent and selected analytes (coordination bonds, intermolecular hydrogen bonding, π-π interactions, and hydrophobic effects) made this TFME capable of high extraction performance and capacity. Several factors involved in the PAMAM@GO-PVDF-TFME experiments such as desorption volume, desorption time, sample pH, extraction time, and stirring rate were screened via Plackett-Burman design and then optimized through Box-Behnken design with the purpose of reaching the highest extraction efficiency. The above method showed a good linear range (0.5-500 μg L -1 and 1-500 μg L -1 ) with the coefficient of determination better 0.9944, low limits of determination (0.12 and 0.20 μg L -1 ), good enrichment factors (99 and 98), acceptable extraction recoveries (99 and 98%), and good spiking recoveries (90-98%) under the optimized condition at three different spike levels for chlorpyrifos and diazinon, respectively. The results confirmed that the presented method would be promising for the determination of various types of these pesticides in environmental and beverage samples.

Purpose: Individuals with aphasia (IWA) show various impairments in speech, language, and cognitive functions. Working memory (WM), a cognitive system that functions to hold and manipulate information in support of complex, goal-directed behaviors, is one of the impaired cognitive domains in aphasia. The present study intended to examine the effects of a WM training program on both memory and language performance in IWA., Method: This quasi-experimental study with an active control group was performed on 25 people with mild or moderate Broca's aphasia aged 29-61 years resulting from left hemisphere damage following ischemic stroke. Participants were assigned into two groups, including a training group (n = 13) and a control group (n = 12). The treatment and control groups received WM training and routine speech therapy, respectively. Two separate lists of WM tests, including one list for both pre-training assessment and training program and a second list for the post-training assessment, were used in this study., Results: The treatment group showed significant improvements in both trained and non-trained WM tasks (near transfer effect) and language performance (far transfer effect) compared to the control group., Conclusion: Given the good generalizability of the WM training program on both WM and language performance, WM training is suggested as part of the rehabilitation program in aphasia., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier Inc. Objective: Age-related hearing loss (ARHL) is the third most challenging disability in older adults. Noise is a known modifiable risk factor of ARHL, which can drive adverse health effects. Few large-scale studies, however, have shown how chronic noise exposure (CNE) impacts the progression of ARHL and tinnitus., Study Design: Retrospective large-scale study., Setting: Audiology clinical practice., Patients: In this study, 928 individuals aged 30-100 years without (n=497) or with the experience of CNE (n=431) were compared in their hearing assessments and tinnitus. In order to only investigate the impact of CNE on ARHL and tinnitus, people with other risk factors of hearing loss were excluded from the study., Intervention: Diagnostic., Main Outcome Measures: Noise damage was associated with a greater ARHL per age decades (pure-tone average(PTA)0.5-4kHz alterations 19.6-70.8 dB vs. 8.0-63.2 dB, ≤0.001), an acceleration of developing a significant ARHL at least by two decades (PTA0.5-4kHz 33.4 dB at 50-59yr vs. 28.2 dB at 30-39yr, ≤0.001), and an increased loss of word recognition scores (total average 84.7% vs. 80.0%, ≤0.001). Significant noise-associated growth in the prevalence of tinnitus also was shown, including more than a triple prevalence for constant tinnitus (28.10% vs. 8.85%, ≤0.001) and near to a double prevalence for intermittent tinnitus (19.10% vs. 11.10%, ≤0.001). Noise also resulted in the elevation of the static compliance of the tympanic membrane throughout age (total average 0.61 vs. 0.85 mmho, ≤0.001)., Conclusions: Our findings emphasize the significant contribution of CNE in auditory aging and the precipitation of both ARHL and tinnitus.

Aging is associated with alterations in cognitive processing and brain neurophysiology. Whereas the primary symptom of amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) is memory problems greater than normal for age and education, patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) show impairments in other cognitive domains in addition to memory dysfunction. Resting-state electroencephalography (rsEEG) studies in physiological aging indicate a global increase in low-frequency oscillations' power and the reduction and slowing of alpha activity. The enhancement of slow and the reduction of fast oscillations, and the disruption of brain functional connectivity, however, are characterized as major rsEEG changes in AD. Recent rodent studies also support human evidence of age- and AD-related changes in resting-state brain oscillations, and the neuroprotective effect of brain stimulation techniques through gamma-band stimulations. Cumulatively, current evidence moves toward optimizing rsEEG features as reliable predictors of people with aMCI at risk for conversion to AD and mapping neural alterations subsequent to brain stimulation therapies. Oncological emergencies are defined as any acute possible morbid or life-threatening events in patients with cancer either because of the malignancy or because of their treatment. These events may occur at any time during malignancy, from symptoms present to end-stage disease. The aim of this study is the review of urgent conditions results from cancer or cancer treatment side effects that need to be addressed immediately. In this study, a comprehensive and in-depth narrative review was carried out by searching the databases of PubMed, Scopus, Science Direct, Google Scholar with the keywords of "cancer, emergency, metabolic emergency, neutropenic fever" along with the words, "tumor lysis syndrome, chemotherapeutic emergency, diagnosis, treatment " in last two decades. Patients suffering from cancer mostly face the challenges that we are classified in different categories, including metabolic, hematologic, cardiovascular, neurologic, respiratory, infectious, and chemotherapeutic emergencies. These patients mostly complain of headaches, nausea, pain, and fever. In conclusion, knowledge of oncology emergencies and palliative care as part of a team approach is critical for treating cancer patients. In this light, it is pivotal for physicians to focus on the early detection of oncological emergencies. Moreover, training programs for cancer patients help them to timely recognize and report the oncologic emergency symptoms, leading to avoid deleterious consequences and unnecessary healthcare costs as well as improve the quality of life in these patients.

This review examines the adverse impacts of different noise exposure paradigms on the neuroendocrine system, hippocampal and neocortical structures, cognitive performances, and the development of Alzheimer's disease (AD)-like neuropathological changes in the brain of laboratory animals. Studies were reviewed in three periods during the lifespan including: adult animals exposed to noise, female rodents exposed to noise during gestation, and offspring exposed to noise during the prenatal period. Findings imply that chronic noise exposure dysregulates the neuroendocrine system leading to hyperactivation of the sympathetic divisions of the autonomic nervous system (i.e., the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA)-axis), and increases stress hormones that affect brain and behaviour. Enduring dysregulation of the HPA-axis was the most discussed mechanism for the harmful effect of noise during the lifespan. Studies also suggest a causative association of noise with diverse indicators of the AD-like neuropathology in rodents and a hypersusceptibility in females. The results indicate the importance of future neuroimaging studies to quantify the potential contribution of noise in predisposing cognitive decline and preclinical signs of dementia in humans., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Ltd. In the current study, a green, cost-effective, and bio-degradable additive was used for the preparation of a highly efficient sorbent based on silicon glue. Here, a banana peel was pretreated and mixed with silicon glue. It was proved that the prepared banana peel-silicon glue bar is a reliable sorbent for stir bar sorptive extraction of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) including aspirin, diclofenac, ibuprofen and mefenamic acid in human urine and plasma. Compared to the lab-made sorbents, the prepared sorbent showed high extraction performance, high stability, and satisfactory reproducibility and involved easy preparation. In order to optimize the effective factors, different parameters such as (stirring rate, pH, extraction time, desorption time and elution solvent volume) were optimized using response surface methodology (RSM) through applying Central-Composite Design (CCD). Under the optimum conditions, the linear dynamic ranges of the target analytes were investigated in the range of 0.2-200 μg L -1 with r 2 higher than 0.9929. Limits of detection (LODs) and limits of quantification (LOQs) of analytes were in the ranges of 0.04-0.5 and 0.15-1.65, respectively. The reproducibility of the method was also investigated by calculating the relative standard deviation. The RSD was measured to be lower than 4.9%. Bar-to-bar reproducibility at a 100 μg L -1 concentration level was also evaluated to be lower than 5.3% (n = 3). Also, each prepared film can be used up to 64 times without any reduction in extraction performance. Finally, the method was successfully applied for the determination of selected drugs in different biological fluids including urine and plasma samples. The calculated relative recovery in real sample analysis was higher than 90%.

New cases of the novel coronavirus, also known as severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), are increasing around the world. Currently, health care services are mainly focused on responding to and controlling the unique challenges of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. These changes, along with the higher susceptibility of patients with cancer to infections, have profound effects on other critical aspects of care and pose a serious challenge for the treatment of such patients. During the COVID-19 pandemic, it is important to provide strategies for managing the treatment of patients with cancer to limit COVID-19-associated risks at this difficult time. The present study set out to summarize the latest research on epidemiology, pathogenesis, and clinical features of COVID-19. This study explored the in-situ growth of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 on woven cotton yarn for the first time. The applicability of highly flexible and natural cotton yarn-polypyrrole-layered double hydroxide-zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 composite (CY- PPy-LDH-ZIF8) was introduced for the extraction of quercetin in plasma and food samples. For increasing the contact area of the analyte and the prepared sorbent, the green substrate was woven and employed as the substrate for the construction of ZIF8. Extraction, separation, and determination of the analyte were performed by TFME-HPLC-UV. Due to the large surface area, the number of cages and unique porous structure of the zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF8) as well as hydrogen bonding, ionic and π-π interactions between the analyte and the ZIF8, the prepared thin film showed a high affinity towards the target analyte. The affecting parameters on the extraction efficiency, including pH of the sample solution, extraction time, stirring rate, desorption time, and elution solvent volume were investigated and optimized through applying Box-Behnken Design (BBD). Under optimum conditions, calibration curves were found to be linear in the range of 0.2-200 μg L -1 with r 2  > 0.9958. Background: Orofacial clefts (OFCs) comprise a wide range of malformations, including cleft lip, cleft palate, and cleft lip with cleft palate, which can vary in terms of etiology, severity, and disease burden., Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the correlation between various risk factors and orofacial cleft disorder spectrum in newborns., Study Design: A total of 323 cases and 400 controls were enrolled in this study and evaluated in terms of the maternal history of abortion or miscarriage, child's sex, maternal and paternal age, maternal history of systemic disease, history of medication therapy during pregnancy, birth order, consanguineous marriage, and complications during pregnancy., Results: Analysis of the results suggested that consanguineous marriage, a maternal history of abortion/miscarriage, and complications during pregnancy could potentially increase the risk of OFCs in children ( P < 0.05). Inhibition plays a crucial role in many functional domains, such as cognition, emotion, and actions. Studies on cognitive aging demonstrate changes in inhibitory mechanisms are age- and pathology-related. Prepulse inhibition (PPI) is the suppression of an acoustic startle reflex (ASR) to an intense stimulus when a weak prepulse stimulus precedes the startle stimulus. A reduction of PPI is thought to reflect dysfunction of sensorimotor gating which normally suppresses excessive behavioral responses to disruptive stimuli. Both human and rodent studies show age-dependent alterations of PPI of the ASR that are further compromised in Alzheimer's disease (AD). The auditory P50 gating, an index of repetition suppression, also is characterized as a putative electrophysiological biomarker of prodromal AD. This review provides the latest evidence of age- and AD-associated impairment of sensorimotor gating based upon both human and rodent studies, as well as the AD-related disruption of P50 gating in humans. It begins with a concise review of neural networks underlying PPI regulation. Then, evidence of age- and AD-related dysfunction of both PPI and P50 gating is discussed. The attentional/ emotional aspects of sensorimotor gating and the neurotransmitter mechanisms underpinning PPI and P50 gating are also reviewed.
