Background: Hereditary transthyretin amyloidosis (ATTRv amyloidosis) is an inherited disease, where the study of family history holds importance. This study evaluates the changes of age-of-onset (AOO) and other age-related clinical factors within and among families affected by ATTRv amyloidosis., Methods: We analysed information from 934 trees, focusing on family, parents, probands and siblings relationships. We focused on 1494 female and 1712 male symptomatic ATTRV30M patients. Results are presented alongside a comparison of current with historical records. Clinical and genealogical indicators identify major changes., Results: Overall, analysis of familial data shows the existence of families with both early and late patients (1/6). It identifies long familial follow-up times since patient families tend to be diagnosed over several years. Finally, results show a large difference between parent-child and proband-patient relationships (20-30 years)., Conclusions: This study reveals that there has been a shift in patient profile, with a recent increase in male elderly cases, especially regarding probands. It shows that symptomatic patients exhibit less variability towards siblings, when compared to other family members, namely the transmitting ancestors' age of onset. This can influence genetic counselling guidelines.

Objective: To estimate the comparative efficacy of ciltacabtagene autoleucel (cilta-cel) versus idecabtagene vicleucel (ide-cel) in patients with relapsed/refractory multiple myeloma (RRMM) treated with 2-4 prior lines of therapy., Methods: Matching adjusted indirect comparison (MAICs) were performed using individual patient-level data (IPD) for cilta-cel from CARTITUDE-1 and CARTITUDE-4 and published aggregated data for ide-cel from KarMMa-3. Cilta-cel patients who met inclusion criteria from KarMMa-3 were selected, and outcomes were compared against data for ide-cel using simulated IPD derived from aggregate-level data from KarMMa-3. Patient characteristics were adjusted by reweighting cilta-cel IPD to match the distribution of prognostic factors in KarMMa-3. Comparative efficacy was estimated for response outcomes using a weighted logistic regression analysis and for progression-free survival using a weighted Cox proportional hazards model., Results: Patients treated with cilta-cel were 1.2 times more likely to achieve overall response (relative response ratio [RR]: 1.18 [95% confidence interval: 1.03-1.34]; p  = 0.04), 1.3 times more likely to achieve very good partial response or better (RR: 1.34 [1.15-1.57]; p  = 0.003), and 1.9 times more likely to achieve complete response or better (RR: 1.91 [1.54-2.37]; p  < 0.0001) versus ide-cel patients from KarMMa-3. Cilta-cel was associated with a significant 49% reduction in risk of disease progression or death versus ide-cel (hazard ratio: 0.51 [95% confidence interval: 0.31, 0.84]; p  = 0.0078)., Conclusion: For patients with triple-class exposed RRMM treated with 2-4 prior lines of treatment, cilta-cel was found to provide superior clinical benefit over ide-cel in terms of response and progression-free survival.

Aim: The phase III randomized controlled trial (RCT) CARTITUDE-4 (NCT04181827) demonstrated superiority of CARVYKTI (ciltacabtagene autoleucel; cilta-cel) over daratumumab, pomalidomide and dexamethasone (DPd) and pomalidomide, bortezomib and dexamethasone (PVd) for relapsed/refractory multiple myeloma (RRMM) patients who have received one to three prior line(s) of therapy (LOT[s]) including an immunomodulatory agent and a proteasome inhibitor, and are refractory to lenalidomide. These analyses estimate the relative efficacy between cilta-cel and other common treatment regimens, for which no direct comparative evidence is available. Materials & methods: Patient data were available from the CARTITUDE-4, CASTOR, CANDOR and APOLLO RCTs. Imbalances between cohorts on key patient characteristics were adjusted for using inverse probability of treatment weighting (IPTW). Relative efficacies were estimated with response rate ratios (RRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for overall response rate (ORR), very good partial response or better rate (≥VGPR) and complete response or better rate (≥CR), and with hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% CIs for progression-free survival (PFS). Sensitivity analyses using different analytical methods and additional covariates were explored. Results: Key characteristics were well balanced across cohorts after IPTW. Cilta-cel showed statistically significant benefit in PFS (HRs: 0.11-0.51), ≥VGPR (RRs: 1.51-5.13) and ≥CR (RRs: 2.90-35.24) versus all comparators, and statistically significant improvements in ORR over most comparator regimens (RRs: 1.22-1.90). Results were consistent across sensitivity analyses. Conclusion: Cilta-cel demonstrated benefit over other common treatment regimens, highlighting its potential to become a new standard of care option for lenalidomide-refractory RRMM patients with one to three prior LOT(s). These comparisons help to demonstrate the improved efficacy of cilta-cel in countries where the standard of care may differ from DPd/PVd.

Purpose: To assess the effectiveness and pain intensity associated with magnetic ureteral stent removal using a retriever, without the aid of ultrasound guidance. Methods: We prospectively enrolled 100 patients who underwent retrograde rigid and flexible ureterorenoscopy with or without laser lithotripsy for ureteronephrolithiasis treatment from September 2021 to June 2023. These patients were assigned in two groups. Group 1 underwent the traditional ureteral stent insertion, while Group 2 underwent magnetic ureteral stent insertion. Both insertion and removal times were documented. The indwelling time for ureteral stents was 14 days. One group underwent stent removal via flexible cystoscopy using grasping forceps and the other group using just a magnetic retriever, without the aid of ultrasound guidance. The numeric pain rating scale, recommendation rate, and a standardized self-answered ureter stent symptoms questionnaire (USSQ) were obtained directly after stent removal. Results: Both groups presented comparable characteristics in factors such as age, body mass index, history of stone treatments, procedure type, and complication rates during and post-surgery. Time taken for ureteral stent insertion did not differ significantly between the groups (131.2 seconds for Group 1 vs 159.1 seconds for Group 2). However, the stent removal time (152.1 seconds for Group 1 vs 35.4 seconds for Group 2) and pain intensity (6 for Group 1 vs 2 for Group 2) were significantly lower for Group 2. Furthermore, five out of the six sections of the USSQ showed significantly better results for Group 2. Conclusions: The use of magnetic ureteral stents, as a safe and efficient alternative to conventional ureteral stents, not only eliminates the need for cystoscopy but also conserves resources and reduces patient discomfort.

In the management of early-stage breast cancer (BC), lymph nodes (LNs) are typically characterised using the One-Step Nucleic Acid Amplification (OSNA) assay, a standard procedure for assessing subclinical metastasis in sentinel LNs (SLNs). The pivotal role of LNs in coordinating the immune response against BC is often overlooked. Our aim was to improve prognostic information provided by the OSNA assay and explore immune-related gene signatures in SLNs. The expression of an immune gene panel was analysed in SLNs from 32 patients with Luminal A early-stage BC (cT1-T2 N0). Using an unsupervised approach based on these expression values, this study identified two clusters, regardless of the SLN invasion: one evidencing an adaptive anti-tumoral immune response, characterised by an increase in naive B cells, follicular T helper cells, and activated NK cells; and another with a more undifferentiated response, with an increase in the activated-to-resting dendritic cells (DCs) ratio. Through a protein-protein interaction (PPI) network, we identified seven immunoregulatory hub genes: CD80 , CD40 , TNF , FCGR3A , CD163 , FCGR3B , and CCR2 . This study shows that, in Luminal A early-stage BC, SLNs gene expression studies enable the identification of distinct immune profiles that may influence prognosis stratification and highlight key genes that could serve as potential targets for immunotherapy.

Background: Non-syndromic orofacial cleft (NSOC) is a complex phenotype, involving multiple genetic and environmental factors. Association studies exploring the genetic susceptibility to this prevalent oral malformation show variability of results in different populations. Using a candidate gene approach, we aimed to verify the role of four single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the susceptibility to NSOC in Portuguese patients., Methods: A total of 254 non-consanguineous individuals of Portuguese were recruited, including 120 patients with NSOC and 134 controls. About 92% of these patients had non-syndromic cleft lip with or without cleft palate (NSCL/P) and 8% had only non-syndromic cleft palate (NSCP). SNPs in the MTHFR (rs1801133), IRF6 (rs642961), PAX7 (rs742071) and TP63 (rs9332461) genes were studied, using a real-time approach with TaqMan probes. Allelic, genotypic, dominant, recessive and over-dominant models were explored using a chi-squared test. Adjusted p-value was calculated for multiple comparisons using the Benjamini-Hochberg false discovery rate (FDR)., Results: All SNPs were in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. For MTHFR, IRF6, and PAX7 SNPs, no statistically significant difference was highlighted for any of the evaluated models. For TP63 SNP, data fitted an over-dominant model, with a protective effect for heterozygotes (OR 1.897; CI 95% [1.144-3.147]; p < .016, when comparing controls vs. cases), but significance was lost when applying adjusted p-value for multiple comparisons (4 × 5 tests)., Conclusion: In this Portuguese population, there was no evidence of an association between the evaluated SNPs and NSOC. Diabetic retinopathy (DR), a common diabetes complication leading to vision loss, presents early clinical signs linked to retinal vasculature damage, affecting the neural retina at advanced stages. However, vascular changes and potential effects on neural cells before clinical diagnosis of DR are less well understood. To study the earliest stages of DR we performed histological phenotyping and quantitative analysis on postmortem retinas from 10 donors with diabetes and without signs of DR (such as microaneurysms and haemorrhages), plus 3 controls and 1 DR case, focusing on capillary loss in the deeper (DVP) and superficial vascular plexuses (SVP) and neural retina effects. The advanced DR case exhibited profound vascular and neural damage, whereas the ten randomly selected donors with diabetes appeared superficially normal. The SVP was indistinguishable from the controls. In contrast, over half of the retinas from donors with diabetes showed capillary dropout in the DVP and increased capillary diameter. However, we could not detect any localised neural cell loss in the vicinity of dropout capillaries. Instead, we observed a subtle pan-retinal loss of inner nuclear layer (INL) cells in all diabetes cases (p<0.05), independent of microvascular damage. In conclusion, our findings demonstrate a novel histological biomarker for early-stage diabetes-related damage in human postmortem retina, common in people with diabetes before clinical DR diagnosis. Furthermore, the mismatch between capillary dropout and neural loss questions the notion of microvascular loss directly causing neurodegeneration at the earliest stages of DR, so diabetes may affect the two readouts independently., (© 2024 by the American Diabetes Association.)

Orthodontic Mini-Implants have a high success rate, but it is crucial to assess the load that they bear in order to maintain their primary stability. Increasing the diameter can improve this stability, but there are limitations due to the proximity of the tooth roots. To avoid damage, smaller diameters are used, which can decrease resistance and cause permanent deformations., Objective: The objective of this study is to evaluate the influence of the diameter of Mini-Implants through bending force tests, taking into account primary stability after one and two insertions., Methods: Here, 40 Ti6AI4V alloy Mini-Implants of two different brands and diameters were divided into eight groups, half of which received one insertion in the artificial bone, and the rest received two. All were subjected to a constant bending force using an INSTRON-Electropuls E10000LT (Norwood, MA, USA) until fracture., Results: The smaller-diameter Mini-Implants were less resistant to fracture, but both were able to withstand the necessary loads produced by orthodontic movements. As for the inserts, there were no statistically significant differences., Conclusions: There is an advantage to using 1.6 mm Mini-Implants over 2.0 mm ones, as a smaller diameter does not lead to fracture due to the forces used in orthodontic treatment. Having one or two inserts did not have a statistically significant effect.

Breast cancer remains a leading cause of mortality among women, with molecular subtypes significantly influencing prognosis and treatment strategies. Currently, identifying the molecular subtype of cancer requires a biopsy-a specialized, expensive, and time-consuming procedure, often yielding to results that must be supported with additional biopsies due to technique errors or tumor heterogeneity. This study introduces a novel approach for predicting breast cancer molecular subtypes using mammography images and advanced artificial intelligence (AI) methodologies. Using the OPTIMAM imaging database, 1397 images from 660 patients were selected. The pretrained deep learning model ResNet-101 was employed to classify tumors into five subtypes: Luminal A, Luminal B1, Luminal B2, HER2, and Triple Negative. Various classification strategies were studied: binary classifications (one vs. all others, specific combinations) and multi-class classification (evaluating all subtypes simultaneously). To address imbalanced data, strategies like oversampling, undersampling, and data augmentation were explored. Performance was evaluated using accuracy and area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC). Binary classification results showed a maximum average accuracy and AUC of 79.02% and 64.69%, respectively, while multi-class classification achieved an average AUC of 60.62% with oversampling and data augmentation. The most notable binary classification was HER2 vs. non-HER2, with an accuracy of 89.79% and an AUC of 73.31%. Binary classification for specific combinations of subtypes revealed an accuracy of 76.42% for HER2 vs. Luminal A and an AUC of 73.04% for HER2 vs. Luminal B1. These findings highlight the potential of mammography-based AI for non-invasive breast cancer subtype prediction, offering a promising alternative to biopsies and paving the way for personalized treatment plans.

Background: Cytoreductive surgery with Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (CR-HIPEC) is a locorregional surgical therapy applied in patients with peritoneal-only metastatic disease of primary abdominal malignancies. Integrated in a multimodal treatment, CR-HIPEC is associated with increased overall survival. In cases of peritoneal-site only relapse, it may be carried out more than once., Methods: Patients who received a CR-HIPEC between January 2016 and December 2020 at Instituto Português de Oncologia do Porto, Portugal were included in a unicentric, retrospective, observational study. Short- and long-term outcomes after surgery were analyzed., Results: In this period, 259 CR-HIPEC were performed on 248 patients. Of these, 31 were CR-HIPEC repeats, with 6 being the third HIPEC in the same patient. Of the 31 cases, 15 (48.4 %) had an appendicular origin. Mean PCI in re-HIPEC group was 10.6 (SD ± 7.1). No significant differences in baseline characteristics between the first and re-HIPEC groups were found, except for mean PCI, higher in the 1st HIPEC group (p = 0.047). In re-HIPEC group, major complications rate (CT-CAE 3-4) was 12.9 % (n = 4), without postoperative mortality. The 1st and re-HIPEC group had similar morbidity rates and hospitalization time. With a median follow-up time of 44 months, relapse rate after repeat CR-HIPEC was 45.2 % (n = 14), with a mean overall survival (OS) of 68.7 months and 5-year OS of 78 %., Conclusions: Repeat CR-HIPEC is a safe approach with an acceptable complication rate for its complexity, associated with a survival benefit in selected patients. Preservation of Scarpa's fascia has improved clinical outcomes in abdominoplasty procedures and in other body contour surgeries. However, the physical properties of Scarpa's fascia have not yet been described, and grafts are still underexplored. Fresh surgical specimens from five female patients subjected to classical abdominoplasty were dissected and analyzed. A grid was drawn on the fascia surface, dividing it into equal upper and lower halves; four Scarpa's fascia samples (30 × 10 mm) were collected from each half, 40 mm apart. The thickness was measured with a caliper. A strain/stress universal testing machine was used for mechanical tests. Twenty-five samples were obtained (nine from the upper half, 16 from the lower). The average thickness was 0.56 ± 0.11 mm. The average values for stretch, stress, strain, and Young's Modulus were, respectively, 1.436, 4.198 MPa, 43.6%, and 23.14 MPa. The upper half showed significantly greater thickness and strain values (p = 0.020 and p = 0.048; Student's t-test). The physical and biomechanical properties of Scarpa's fascia can make it a donor area for fascial grafts as an alternative to fascia lata, as it is always available and has minimal donor-site morbidity. Further studies are needed to validate this statement. Background: The arterial input function (AIF) is vital for myocardial blood flow quantification in cardiac MRI to indicate the input time-concentration curve of a contrast agent. Inaccurate AIFs can significantly affect perfusion quantification. Purpose: When only saturated and biased AIFs are measured, this work investigates multiple ways of leveraging tissue curve information, including using AIF + tissue curves as inputs and optimizing the loss function for deep neural network training. Methods : Simulated data were generated using a 12-parameter AIF mathematical model for the AIF. Tissue curves were created from true AIFs combined with compartment-model parameters from a random distribution. Using Bloch simulations, a dictionary was constructed for a saturation-recovery 3D radial stack-of-stars sequence, accounting for deviations such as flip angle, T2* effects, and residual longitudinal magnetization after the saturation. A preliminary simulation study established the optimal tissue curve number using a bidirectional long short-term memory (Bi-LSTM) network with just AIF loss. Further optimization of the loss function involves comparing just AIF loss, AIF with compartment-model-based parameter loss, and AIF with compartment-model tissue loss. The optimized network was examined with both simulation and hybrid data, which included in vivo 3D stack-of-star datasets for testing. The AIF peak value accuracy and ktrans results were assessed. Results : Increasing the number of tissue curves can be beneficial when added tissue curves can provide extra information. Using just the AIF loss outperforms the other two proposed losses, including adding either a compartment-model-based tissue loss or a compartment-model parameter loss to the AIF loss. With the simulated data, the Bi-LSTM network reduced the AIF peak error from -23.6 ± 24.4% of the AIF using the dictionary method to 0.2 ± 7.2% (AIF input only) and 0.3 ± 2.5% (AIF + ten tissue curve inputs) of the network AIF. The corresponding ktrans error was reduced from -13.5 ± 8.8% to -0.6 ± 6.6% and 0.3 ± 2.1%. With the hybrid data (simulated data for training; in vivo data for testing), the AIF peak error was 15.0 ± 5.3% and the corresponding ktrans error was 20.7 ± 11.6% for the AIF using the dictionary method. The hybrid data revealed that using the AIF + tissue inputs reduced errors, with peak error (1.3 ± 11.1%) and ktrans error (-2.4 ± 6.7%). Conclusions : Integrating tissue curves with AIF curves into network inputs improves the precision of AI-driven AIF corrections. This result was seen both with simulated data and with applying the network trained only on simulated data to a limited in vivo test dataset.

Bronchial asthma is a chronic pathology and a global public health problem. However, asthma can be controlled and treated for the most part by patients, so the Portuguese General Directorate of Health recommends shared medical appointments in primary health care (PHC). The present study aims to identify the role of PHC nurses in the control and treatment of asthma in adults. Using the MeSH platform, the following descriptors were validated: asthma, nurses, adults. An individual search was carried out in the following databases: CINAHL (ESBSCO host), MEDLINE (Pubmed host), Web of Science, and Scopus. Out of a total of 280 publications, 79 of which were duplicates and 185 publications which did not meet the inclusion criteria, 16 publications remained readable. Of the eligible articles, there were 13 specialist reports, one mixed study, one quasi-experimental study, and one randomized trial. Education was the intervention most identified in the scientific evidence analyzed, and patient assessment, application of an asthma control questionnaire, verification and training of inhalation technique, empowerment for self-management of the disease, support, promotion of seasonal influenza vaccination, and use of written action plans were also identified. The results reveal that, although the scientific evidence on the intervention of these professionals is poorly developed, nurses play a crucial role in the control and treatment of asthma. The scientific evidence analyzed allowed the identification of interventions that can help the organization of a nursing health appointment, providing nurses with a crucial role in the control and treatment of asthma in adults in the context of PHC.

Background: Malignant hyperfunctioning thyroid nodules are rare and more likely to occur in follicular cancer types rather than papillary variants. The authors present a case of a papillary thyroid carcinoma associated with a hyperfunctioning nodule., Methods: A single adult patient submitted to total thyroidectomy with the presence of thyroid carcinoma within hyperfunctioning nodules was selected. Additionally, brief literature was conducted., Results: An asymptomatic 58-year-old male was subjected to routine blood analysis and a TSH level of <0.003 mIU/L was found. Ultrasonography revealed a 21 mm solid, hypoechoic, and heterogenous nodule with microcalcifications in the right lobe. A fine needle aspiration guided by ultrasound resulted in a follicular lesion of undetermined significance. A 99m Tc thyroid scintigram was followed and identified a right-sided hyperfunctioning nodule. Another cytology was performed and a papillary thyroid carcinoma was derived as a result. The patient underwent a total thyroidectomy. Postoperative histology confirmed the diagnosis and a tumor-free margin with no vascular or capsular invasions., Conclusion: Hyperfunctioning malignant nodules are a rare association, although a careful approach should be led since major clinical implications arise. Selective fine needle aspiration in all suspicious ≥1 cm nodules should be considered.

Brazilian coastal archaeology is renowned for its numerous and large shellmounds (sambaquis), which had been continuously occupied from at least 8000 to 1000 years cal BP. However, changes in their structure and material culture in the late Holocene have led to different hypotheses concerning their ecological and cultural changes. The archaeological site Galheta IV (ca. 1300 to 500 years cal BP) offers new insights into the complexity of the late coastal occupation in southern Brazil. Our attempt was to determine whether Galheta IV can be classified as a sambaqui site, or if it belongs to a Southern proto-Jê settlement. Here, we reassessed Galheta's collections and applied a multi-proxy approach using: new 14C dates, zooarchaeology, δ13C and δ15N isotopes in bulk collagen and 87Sr/86Srenamel isotopic ratios from eight human individuals, ceramics analysis, and FTIR. The results indicate an intense exploitation of marine resources, with an area designated for processing animals located at the opposite side of the funerary areas. Bone tools and specific species of animals were found as burial accompaniments. No evidence of human cremations was detected. 87Sr/86Sr results indicate that the eight human individuals always lived on the coast, and did not come from the inland. The pottery analysis confirms the association with Itararé-Taquara, but contrary to what was assumed by previous studies, the pottery seems related to other coastal sites, and not to the highlands. In light of these findings, we propose that Galheta IV can be considered a funerary mound resulting from long and continuous interactions between shellmound and Southern proto-Jê populations. This study not only enhances our understanding of the late coastal occupation dynamics in southern Brazil but also underscores its importance in reshaping current interpretations of shellmound cultural changes over time., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist., (Copyright: © 2024 Mendes Cardoso et al. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of two coating materials, a silicone sealing gel and a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) tape, on the screw preload and removal torque value (RTV) to develop strategies to prevent prosthetic screw loosening. We examined 45 complexes comprising an implant, abutment, and prosthetic screw, of which 15 samples were uncoated, 15 were coated with GapSeal ® (Hager & Werken GmbH & Co., Duisburg, Germany), and 15 were coated with PTFE tape (MIARCO ® , Valencia, Spain). The screws were tightened to register the preload and then untightened to register the RTV. The preload values showed a statistically significant difference only in the PTFE group, suggesting that this lubricant negatively affects the preload. The RTVs showed statistically significant differences among all groups, with the GapSeal ® group and PTFE group showing the highest and lowest values, respectively. It can be concluded that the application of the PTFE tape on the screw significantly reduced the preload and RTV. The silicone sealing gel did not affect the preload but increased the RTV. Therefore, the use of GapSeal ® should be considered to prevent prosthetic screw loosening, while the use of PTFE tape should be avoided.

Introduction: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease is the leading cause of pediatric chronic liver disease. Although nonalcoholic fatty liver disease is closely associated with obesity, its relationship with metabolic syndrome in children is not fully understood. The main aim of this study was to evaluate the association between nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and a combination of cardiometabolic risk factors in adolescents with overweight/obesity, using a pediatric metabolic syndrome score (PsiMS) to predict metabolic syndrome., Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted. Subjects with overweight/obesity aged 10 to 17 followed at two clinical centers in Portugal (2018 - 2021) were enrolled. The independent association of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease with PsiMS, and of other potential predictors, was tested through multiple regression analyses. Receiver operator characteristic curve analysis was performed to estimate the optimal cutoff of PsiMS to discriminate metabolic syndrome., Results: Eighty-four subjects were included (median age at baseline 11.5 years). The prevalence rate of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease was 51% and the prevalence rate of metabolic syndrome was 7%. The mean PsiMS was 2.05 ± 0.48 at the first evaluation, and 2.11 ± 0.52 at the last evaluation (mean follow-up time was 15 months). The nonalcoholic fatty liver disease group had significantly (p < 0.05) higher weight and body mass index z-scores, higher rate of severe obesity and higher waist circumference percentile. PsiMS was highly accurate in predicting metabolic syndrome (area under the curve = 0.96), with an optimal cutoff of 2.46 (sensitivity 100%, specificity 89%). In the univariate analysis, no statistically significant association was observed between nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and PsiMS. In the multiple regression analysis, female sex had a negative association with PsiMS (first and last evaluation). Independent predictors of a higher PsiMS at first evaluation were: ≥ 2 metabolic syndrome criteria, body mass index z-score, insulin resistance and dyslipidemia. At the last evaluation, independent predictors of a higher PsiMS were: nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, baseline PsiMS and body mass index increase from baseline., Conclusion: The results suggest a good performance of the PsiMS to assess metabolic syndrome and that nonalcoholic fatty liver disease is associated with PsiMS at follow-up.

Bovine leptospirosis is an important disease that affects the reproductive sphere. Due to its high relevance for the bovine production chain in a worldwide scenario, a better understanding of the disease is crucial to reduce its negative impacts. The main agents are strains from the Sejroe serogroup, such as Hardjo and Guaricura, which lead to renal and genital infection. The genital colonization causes a chronic, silent, and subclinical reproductive syndrome, called Bovine Genital Leptospirosis (BGL). Embryonic death, estrus repetition, subfertility, and abortions are the main signs of BGL condition in females. However, although leptospires have been identified in semen, the manifestation of BGL in bulls remains to be clarified. The recommended diagnosis of BGL includes a serologic screening of the herds using the microscopic agglutination test followed by PCR of genital samples (cervicovaginal mucus, uterine fragment, or semen), especially from animals with reproductive failures. After the identification of carriers, control is carried out considering three steps: antimicrobial treatment of the carriers, environmental and reproductive management, and herd vaccination. Systematic testing, quarantine of newly arrived animals, and usage of antimicrobials in semen diluents or embryo culture media are other sanitary approaches that are encouraged to improve the control of the syndrome. Herein we discuss protocols for an efficient diagnosis and preventive procedures of BGL, which are fundamental to reducing the negative impact of the disease on cattle reproduction and its consequent economic hazards.

The present work investigates the effect of both surface roughness and particle morphology on the retention behaviour of granular materials via X-ray micro-computed tomography (µCT) observations. X-ray µCT images were taken on two types of spherical glass beads (i.e. smooth and rough) and two different sands (i.e. natural and roughened). Each sample was subjected to drainage and soaking paths consisting in a multiphase 'static' flow of potassium iodine (KI) brine (wetting phase) and dry air (non-wetting phase). Tomograms were obtained at different saturation states ranging from fully brine saturated to air dry conditions with 6.2 μm voxel size resolution. The data acquisition and pre-processing are here described while all data, a total of 48 tomograms, are made publicly available. The combined dataset offers new opportunities to study the influence of surface roughness and particle morphology on capillary actions as well as supporting validation of pore-scale models of multiphase flow in granular materials., (© 2024. The biopsychosocial development of individuals is influenced by body image and physical exercise. This study aimed to evaluate seven hypotheses regarding the impact of positive affect, negative affect, self-consciousness of appearance, and positive body image on the practice of physical exercise. The data were processed using the statistical package SmartPLS 4.0.9.5. Using an exploratory methodology based on structural equation modeling (SEM) of structural equations applied to small sample sizes, a tentative model has been generated to define the drivers of physical activity. The survey used the Body Mass Index, Body Appreciation Scale-Revised, and Derriford Appearance Scale-14 items. The study involved 129 men and 279 women (N = 408). The model demonstrated a distinct internal consistency in that, out of the seven hypotheses analyzed, only one was rejected. The findings of the multigroup analysis indicate that there are no statistically significant discrepancies between the constructed measures and the practice of physical activity. The conclusions of this study showed that, although positive and negative affect, and self-consciousness influence positive body image, there were no statistically significant differences between those who exercise and those who do not exercise. Various factors influence biopsychosocial development. Future studies should explore the influence of psychological and social variables on understanding body image and physical exercise.

Tacrolimus (TAC) is a drug from natural origin that can be used for topical application to control autoimmune skin diseases such as atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, and vitiligo. Computational simulation based on quantum mechanics theory by solving Schrödinger Equation for n-body problem may allow the theoretical calculation of drug geometry, charge distribution and dipole moment, electronic levels and molecular orbitals, electronic transitions, and vibrational transitions. Additionally, the development of novel nanotechnology-based delivery systems containing TAC can be an approach for reducing the dose applied topically, increasing dermal retention, and reducing the reported side effects due to the controlled release pattern. Firstly, this paper was devoted to obtaining the molecular, electronic, and vibrational data for TAC by using five semi-empirical (SE) methods and one Density Functional Theory (DFT) method in order to expand the knowledge about the drug properties by computational simulation. Then, this study was carried out to prepare TAC-loaded poly(ԑ-caprolactone) nanocapsules by interfacial polymer deposition following solvent displacement and investigate the in vitro drug permeation using the Franz diffusion cell and the photoacoustic spectroscopy. Computational simulations were compared in the three schemes SE/SE, SE/DFT, and DFT/DFT, where the first method represented the procedure used for geometry optimization and the second one was performed to extract electronic and vibrational properties. Computational data showed correspondence with TAC geometry description and electronic properties, with few differences in HOMO - LUMO gap (Δ) and dipole values. The SE/DFT and DFT/DFT methods presented a better drug description for the UV-Vis, Infrared, and Raman spectra with low deviation from experimental values. Franz cell model demonstrated that TAC was more delivered across the Strat-M® membrane from the solution than the drug-loaded poly(ԑ-caprolactone) nanocapsules. Overactivation of microglial cells seems to play a crucial role in the degeneration of dopaminergic neurons occurring in Parkinson's disease. We have previously demonstrated that glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) present in astrocytes secretome modulates microglial responses induced by an inflammatory insult. Therefore, astrocyte-derived soluble factors may include relevant molecular players of therapeutic interest in the control of excessive neuroinflammatory responses. However, in vivo, the control of neuroinflammation is more complex as it depends on the interaction between different types of cells other than microglia and astrocytes. Whether neurons may interfere in the astrocyte-microglia crosstalk, affecting the control of microglial reactivity exerted by astrocytes, is unclear. Therefore, the present work aimed to disclose if the control of microglial responses mediated by astrocyte-derived factors, including GDNF, could be affected by the crosstalk with neurons, impacting GDNF's ability to protect dopaminergic neurons exposed to a pro-inflammatory environment. Also, we aimed to disclose if the protection of dopaminergic neurons by GDNF involves the modulation of microglial cells. Our results show that the neuroprotective effect of GDNF was mediated, at least in part, by a direct action on microglial cells through the GDNF family receptor α-1. However, this protective effect seems to be impaired by other mediators released in response to the neuron-astrocyte crosstalk since neuron-astrocyte secretome, in contrast to astrocytes secretome, was unable to protect dopaminergic neurons from the injury triggered by lipopolysaccharide-activated microglia. Supplementation with exogenous GDNF was needed to afford protection of dopaminergic neurons exposed to the inflammatory environment. In conclusion, our results revealed that dopaminergic protective effects promoted by GDNF involve the control of microglial reactivity. However, endogenous GDNF is insufficient to confer dopaminergic neuron protection against an inflammatory insult. This reinforces the importance of further developing new therapeutic strategies aiming at providing GDNF or enhancing its expression in the brain regions affected by Parkinson's disease.

Background: The use of a gradient echo spin echo (GESE) method to obtain rapid T2 and T2* estimation in the heart has been proposed. The effect of acquisition parameter settings on T2 and T2* bias and precision have not been investigated in depth., Purpose: To understand factors impacting the quantification of T2 and T2* values with a gradient echo spin echo (GESE) method using echo planar imaging (EPI) readouts in a reduced field of view acquisition., Methods: The GESE method is implemented with a reduced field-of-view using an outer volume suppression (OVS) technique to minimize the time for multi-echo EPI readouts. The number of EPI readouts (images) for the GESE is optimized using Cramer-Rao Lower Bound (CRLB) and Monte Carlo simulations with a nonlinear least-square (NLLS) estimator. The SNR requirements were studied using the latter simulation method for a selected range of T2 and T2* values and T2/T2* ratios. Two healthy control subjects were imaged with the proposed GESE sequence and evaluated with the NLLS estimation method. In addition, the proposed OVS method was compared with a saturation bands OVS method in one subject. Clinical T2 and T2* mappings were used as the reference., Results: The optimal number of EPI readouts is five and the performance is slightly better when the refocusing pulse is placed between the 2 nd and 3 rd readouts. The SNR requirement for achieving a target bias < 1 ms and standard deviation (SD) < 5 ms is more demanding when T2/T2* ratio increases. The minimum SNR requirement in the GESE acquisition should vary from 6 to 20 depending on specific myocardial T2 and T2* values at 3T. The T2 and T2* estimates using the proposed OVS method and the saturation bands OVS method are both similar to the reference., Conclusion: The GESE sequence with five EPI readouts is a feasible and efficient technique that can estimate T2 and T2* values in the septal myocardium within a heartbeat when the SNR requirement can be satisfied., (© 2023 American Association of Physicists in Medicine.)

Most patients with muscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC) are not cured with platinum chemotherapy. Up-regulation of nuclear factor kappa light-chain enhancer of activated B cells (NF-κB) is a major mechanism underlying chemoresistance, suggesting that its pharmacological inhibition may increase platinum efficacy. NF-κB signaling was investigated in two patient cohorts. The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) was used to correlate NF-κB signaling and patient survival. The efficacy of cisplatin plus the NF-κB inhibitor dimethylaminoparthenolide (DMAPT) versus cisplatin or DMAPT alone was tested in vitro. Xenografted and immunocompetent MIBC mouse models were studied in vivo. Platinum-naive claudin-low MIBC showed constitutive NF-κB signaling and this was associated with reduced disease-specific survival in TCGA patients. Chemotherapy up-regulated NF-κB signaling and chemoresistance-associated genes, including SPHK1, PLAUR, and SERPINE1. In mice, DMAPT significantly improved the efficacy of cisplatin in both models. The combination preserved body weight, renal function, and morphology, reduced muscle fatigue and IL-6 serum levels, and did not aggravate immuno-hematological toxicity compared with cisplatin alone. The purpose of this report is to demonstrate robotic cryoablation of an atrial myxoma stalk as a method to prevent recurrence and preserve atrial tissue. A 38-year-old female patient was taken to the operating room, and an atrial myxoma abutting the left inferior pulmonary vein was resected robotically. This was followed by cryoablation of the tumor stalk instead of a full-thickness resection to prevent an extensive reconstruction. The operation resulted in the successful resection of an atrial myxoma with minimal length of stay. Follow-up at 3 months has shown no evidence of residual or recurrent tumor. Follow-up at 1 year is planned. Background and Objectives: Repeated blood donation is a well-known cause of iron deficiency among donors. However, present scientific literature lacks comprehensive evidence regarding the impact of regular plateletpheresis procedures on body iron reserves. In this study, we aimed to detect and correlate iron deficiency (using iron indices) with the frequency of platelet donations. Additionally, we also analysed the correlation between other iron and haematological indices with serum ferritin to determine cost-effective parameters that may serve as an initial screening approach to determine which donors should be subjected to serum ferritin testing., Materials and Methods: A total of 180 male participants from our platelet donor registry were enrolled in this observational cross-sectional study. Enrolment questionnaires were administered to eligible donors, and biological samples were collected during plateletpheresis donation. Biological tests such as complete blood count, reticulocyte indices, iron indices, vitamin B12 and folate were performed., Results: Donors with ≥12 donations per year showed the highest prevalence of low ferritin (serum ferritin: 15-30 ng/mL) and absent iron stores (serum ferritin <15 ng/mL) (41.3% and 26.7%, respectively). Ferritin showed a significant negative correlation with recent (r = -0.346) and lifetime donations (r = -0.196). The efficacy of other indices for identifying iron depletion was much better using a serum ferritin value <15 ng/mL., Conclusion: Regular plateletpheresis donations can lead to varying severities of non-anaemic iron deficiency. Ultrasound (US) imaging is used in the diagnosis and monitoring of COVID-19 and breast cancer. The presence of Speckle Noise (SN) is a downside to its usage since it decreases lesion conspicuity. Filters can be used to remove SN, but they involve time-consuming computation and parameter tuning. Several researchers have been developing complex Deep Learning (DL) models (150,000-500,000 parameters) for the removal of simulated added SN, without focusing on the real-world application of removing naturally occurring SN from original US images. Here, a simpler (<30,000 parameters) Convolutional Neural Network Autoencoder (CNN-AE) to remove SN from US images of the breast and lung is proposed. In order to do so, simulated SN was added to such US images, considering four different noise levels (σ = 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, 0.5). The original US images (N = 1227, breast + lung) were given as targets, while the noised US images served as the input. The Structural Similarity Index Measure (SSIM) and Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR) were used to compare the output of the CNN-AE and of the Median and Lee filters with the original US images. The CNN-AE outperformed the use of these classic filters for every noise level. To see how well the model removed naturally occurring SN from the original US images and to test its real-world applicability, a CNN model that differentiates malignant from benign breast lesions was developed. Several inputs were used to train the model (original, CNN-AE denoised, filter denoised, and noised US images). The use of the original US images resulted in the highest Matthews Correlation Coefficient (MCC) and accuracy values, while for sensitivity and negative predicted values, the CNN-AE-denoised US images (for higher σ values) achieved the best results. Our results demonstrate that the application of a simpler DL model for SN removal results in fewer misclassifications of malignant breast lesions in comparison to the use of original US images and the application of the Median filter. This shows that the use of a less-complex model and the focus on clinical practice applicability are relevant and should be considered in future studies.

Background: Bovine leptospirosis is an important reproductive disease and abortion is a major sign, leading to economic impacts. Due to its multifactorial etiology, the proper diagnosis of the cause of the abortion is crucial. Necropsy of the fetuses followed by molecular analysis is recommended for diagnosis, and the investigation mainly occurs in the kidneys and liver. This study aimed to analyze unconventional sites for the presence of leptospiral DNA in bovine anicteric aborted fetuses., Methods: Five fetuses of the same herd were received for necropsy and diagnosis. Conventional lip L32-PCR was performed in the fetuses' kidneys, livers, lungs, hearts, spleens, subcapsular kidney content, abomasal fluid, and in the cavity's hemorrhagic contents. To complete the investigation, the sera of 30 cows of the herd were collected to perform the serologic screening by Microscopic Agglutination Test. In addition, six subfertile non-pregnant cows from the same herd were selected due to their low reproductive performance, and genital samples (uterine fragment and cervicovaginal mucus) and urine were collected for lip L32-PCR. PCR-positive samples were submitted to a nested PCR of the sec Y gene and intended for sequencing., Results: The herd presented seroreactive animals (11/30, 36.6%), all against the Sejroe serogroup, with titers between 200 and 1600. In necropsy, four fetuses showed hemorrhagic and anicteric lesions, while one fetus had no macroscopic lesions. Regarding molecular analysis, all the fetuses were positive in lip L32-PCR and the positive sites were the heart, lungs, subcapsular kidney content, thymus, kidneys, liver, and abomasal fluid. Only one fetus presented positive results in the kidney and liver, while three fetuses were positive in the abomasal fluid. Five of six cows were positive for lip L32-PCR, all being positive only in genital samples. Of the fetuses and the cows, seven sequences were obtained and all were identified as Leptospira interrogans serogroup Sejroe serovar Hardjoprajitno., Conclusions: In order to improve the diagnosis of leptospirosis in cows, it is recommended to perform a comprehensive analysis of the samples, beyond the kidneys and liver. Thus, we highly encourage testing multiple organs by PCR to investigate abortions suspected of bovine leptospirosis, particularly in anicteric fetuses.

Implant-supported provisional restorations are critical for improving the esthetics and shaping of the peri-implant tissue. The mechanical properties of these provisional materials can be influenced by saliva, food, beverages, and interactions between these materials in the oral environment. Therefore, the integrity of provisional restorations should be preserved throughout the treatment period. This study aimed to evaluate the fracture strength of implant-supported polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) provisional restorations made of computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing when immersed in different solutions at a controlled temperature of 37 °C for 7 days. Each analog-pillar-crown set was submerged in different liquids: 10 pieces were placed in distilled water then in tea, coffee, red wine, and Coca Cola ® for 1 week at a controlled oral temperature of 37 °C. The samples were then subjected to fracture forces. The moment of fracture of the crown was recorded and compared with those of the other samples. Specimens immersed in distilled water (control group) had the highest fracture resistance (mean [M] = 1331.00 ± 296.74 N), while those immersed in tea had the lowest mean resistance to fracture (mean [M] = 967.00 ± 281.86 N). Nutritional deficiency and inappropriate eating habits influence the fracture strength of temporary crowns, thereby rendering them more elastic or less resistant to fractures.

Sambaqui (shellmound) societies are among the most intriguing archaeological phenomena in pre-colonial South America, extending from approximately 8,000 to 1,000 years before present (yr BP) across 3,000 km on the Atlantic coast. However, little is known about their connection to early Holocene hunter-gatherers, how this may have contributed to different historical pathways and the processes through which late Holocene ceramists came to rule the coast shortly before European contact. To contribute to our understanding of the population history of indigenous societies on the eastern coast of South America, we produced genome-wide data from 34 ancient individuals as early as 10,000 yr BP from four different regions in Brazil. Early Holocene hunter-gatherers were found to lack shared genetic drift among themselves and with later populations from eastern South America, suggesting that they derived from a common radiation and did not contribute substantially to later coastal groups. Our analyses show genetic heterogeneity among contemporaneous Sambaqui groups from the southeastern and southern Brazilian coast, contrary to the similarity expressed in the archaeological record. The complex history of intercultural contact between inland horticulturists and coastal populations becomes genetically evident during the final horizon of Sambaqui societies, from around 2,200 yr BP, corroborating evidence of cultural change., (© 2023. Subcostal scars may increase the risk of healing complications in abdominoplasty. The authors evaluated the use of thermography as a potential tool for patient selection and surgery planning to avoid complications and improve abdominoplasty outcomes. Two candidates for abdominoplasty procedures who presented with extensive subcostal scars were submitted to an infrared thermography protocol at all phases of the procedure: preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative at 1 and 6 months. The preoperative thermography for both patients revealed near-normal abdominal wall perfusion. The thermograms captured intraoperatively during flap elevation did not show perfusion deficits on the upper abdominal flap. At 1 month and 6 months postoperative, dynamic thermography for both patients showed normal to near-normal perfusion. The procedures had a complication-free course with a good aesthetic result. Plastic surgeons may be reluctant to perform a full abdominoplasty in patients with a previous subcostal incision. In this preliminary analysis, we raise the potential usefulness of thermography for patients with recent subcostal scars and/or important comorbidities as a strategy for adequate patient and technique selection, avoiding possible complications. Introduction: Hereditary transthyretin amyloidosis (ATTRv amyloidosis) is a rare neurological hereditary disease clinically characterized as severe, progressive, and life-threatening while the age of onset represents the moment in time when the first symptoms are felt. In this study, we present and discuss our results on the study, development, and evaluation of an approach that allows for time-to-event prediction of the age of onset, while focusing on genealogical feature construction., Materials and Methods: This research was triggered by the need to answer the medical problem of when will an asymptomatic ATTRv patient show symptoms of the disease. To do so, we defined and studied the impact of 77 features (ranging from demographic and genealogical to familial disease history) we studied and compared a pool of prediction algorithms, namely, linear regression (LR), elastic net (EN), lasso (LA), ridge (RI), support vector machines (SV), decision tree (DT), random forest (RF), and XGboost (XG), both in a classification as well as a regression setting; we assembled a baseline (BL) which corresponds to the current medical knowledge of the disease; we studied the problem of predicting the age of onset of ATTRv patients; we assessed the viability of predicting age of onset on short term horizons, with a classification framing, on localized sets of patients (currently symptomatic and asymptomatic carriers, with and without genealogical information); and we compared the results with an out-of-bag evaluation set and assembled in a different time-frame than the original data in order to account for data leakage., Results: Currently, we observe that our approach outperforms the BL model, which follows a set of clinical heuristics and represents current medical practice. Robotic devices can be used in upper limb rehabilitation in order to help the total or partial functional recovery. Robots can perform repetitive activities for a long period of time, which may be beneficial for rehabilitation processes. In this context, this study uses a bi-manual robotic device to investigate motor learning and control for the upper limbs among different game guided tasks, and inspect the user's grip force exerted in response to perturbations. The robotic device resembles a bicycle handlebar, instrumented with load cells to measure torques and grip forces. It is equipped with a DC motor to apply external torques to the guiding system. A game was developed containing in-game and physical perturbations to the natural movement of the handlebar. Tests were carried out with 16 healthy subjects that were instructed to move the handlebar guiding a character displayed on the screen with the objective of collecting tokens to get the higher score in the game. During the trials, corresponding data from the game and the load cells were collected and used to infer the learning process, the mean error in the trajectory and the variations in the force applied to the handles of the handlebar. Analyses showed that there was learning in the first repetitions, and the learning was retained further. The higher values of the grip force occurred when there was a physical perturbation to the handlebar's natural movement. The larger errors in the trajectories occurred immediately after the perturbations ended. In conclusion, there was a performance improvement, probably related to learning. The increase of the mean error at the transitions of the perturbations indicates the need for adaptation to the new conditions of the task.

Background: Scarpa fascia preservation during abdominoplasty has been shown to have several clinical advantages. The mechanisms behind its efficiency have been the subject of several studies. Three theories have been proposed, relating to mechanical factors, lymphatic preservation, and improved vascularization. This study aimed to further investigate the possible vascular impact of Scarpa fascia preservation by using a thermographic analysis., Methods: A single-center prospective study was conducted, involving 12 female patients randomly and equally assigned to one of two surgical procedures: classic (Group A) and Scarpa-sparing abdominoplasty (Group B). Dynamic thermography was applied before and after surgery (one and six months), and two regions of interest (ROIs) were considered. The latter had the same location on every sample, and corresponded to areas where different surgical planes had been used. Static thermography was applied intraoperatively, and four ROIs were considered, located over Scarpa and over the deep fascia. The respective thermal data were analyzed., Results: The general characteristics of both groups were identical. Preoperative thermography demonstrated no differences between groups. Intraoperative higher thermal gradients between lateral and medial ROIs were observed in Group B (P = 0.037, right side). Dynamic thermography at one month demonstrated a trend for better thermal recovery and better thermal symmetry (P = 0.035, 1-min mark) in Group B. No other differences were found., Conclusion: Dynamic thermography presented a better response when Scarpa fascia was preserved: stronger, faster, and more symmetric. •Muscle strength decline is a crucial factor for the course of sarcopenia in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients. •There is a need to discuss the association between IBD and sarcopenia focusing not only on changes of muscle mass, but also on muscle strength. •A narrative review was conducted in order to present the set of factors with impact in both muscle strength and IBD. •Inflammation, reduced nutrient intake and malabsorption, changes in body composition and gut microbiota dysbiosis are most likely the main factors with impact on muscle strength in IBD patients. Inflammation, changes in nutrient absorption and gut dysbiosis are common conditions in patients with inflammatory bowel disease. These factors may lead to variations in macro- and micronutrients and, particularly, to an imbalance of protein metabolism, loss of muscle mass and development of sarcopenia. This narrative review aims to present the set of factors with impact in muscle strength and physical performance that may potentially mediate the relation between inflammatory bowel disease and sarcopenia. Studies that associated changes in muscle strength, sarcopenia and inflammatory bowel disease were selected through a literature search in databases Medline, Pubmed and Scielo using relevant keywords: muscle strength, physical performance, sarcopenia and inflammatory bowel disease. Chronic inflammation is currently reported as a determinant factor in the development of muscle atrophy in inflammatory bowel disease. In addition, strength decline in inflammatory bowel disease patients may be also influenced by changes in body composition and by gut dysbiosis. Measures of muscle strength and physical performance should be considered in the initial identification of sarcopenia, particularly in patients with inflammatory bowel disease, for a timely intervention can be provided. Presence of proinflammatory cytokines, high adiposity, malabsorption and consequent deficits of macro and micronutrients, loss of muscle mass, and gut dysbiosis may be the main factors with impact in muscle strength, that probably mediate the relation between inflammatory bowel disease and sarcopenia.

Currently, breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed type of cancer worldwide. Digital Breast Tomosynthesis (DBT) has been widely accepted as a stand-alone modality to replace Digital Mammography, particularly in denser breasts. However, the image quality improvement provided by DBT is accompanied by an increase in the radiation dose for the patient. Here, a method based on 2D Total Variation (2D TV) minimization to improve image quality without the need to increase the dose was proposed. Two phantoms were used to acquire data at different dose ranges (0.88-2.19 mGy for Gammex 156 and 0.65-1.71 mGy for our phantom). A 2D TV minimization filter was applied to the data, and the image quality was assessed through contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) and the detectability index of lesions before and after filtering. The results showed a decrease in 2D TV values after filtering, with variations of up to 31%, increasing image quality. The increase in CNR values after filtering showed that it is possible to use lower doses (-26%, on average) without compromising on image quality. The detectability index had substantial increases (up to 14%), especially in smaller lesions. So, not only did the proposed approach allow for the enhancement of image quality without increasing the dose, but it also improved the chances of detecting small lesions that could be overlooked.

Dental-implant-supported reconstructions provide comfort and improvements in prosthetic function, adaptation, and stability over conventional treatment options. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of different denture cleansing solutions and their influence on the deterioration and loss of retention of overdenture attachments in a 12-month clinical-use simulation. In this way, ten specimens each of different brands of retentive caps made of Teflon (OT Equator ® (Rhein83, Bologna, Italy), Locator ® (Zest Anchors, Escondido, CA, USA), Kerator ® (KJ Meditech, Gwangiu, Republic of Korea), and Locator R-Tx ® (Zest Anchors, Escondido, CA, USA)) were immersed in five different cleaning solutions (Kukident ® (P&G Tech, Oxford Parkway, UK), Benfix ® (Laboratorios URGO S.L., Guipúzcoa, Spain), Corega ® (Stafford Miller, Waterford, Ireland), and Protefix ® (Neuhofer Weiche, Parchim, Germany)), and tap water was used as the control group, in a simulation that lasted 12 months. Data were analyzed using two-way ANOVA and a Tukey HSD. Furthermore, a Levene Test and Shapiro-Wilk tests were performed to assess the validation of the ANOVA assumptions. The statistical analysis was performed using R version 4.2.2 software with the significance level set to p < 0.05. There were significant statistical differences between the different manufacturers regarding the retention forces of the attachment's retentive caps (F = 322.066, p < 0.001). For the cleaning solution groups, different statistical results between Kukident ® (P&G Tech, Oxford Parkway, UK) ( p < 0.05) and Benfix ® (Laboratorios URGO S.L., Guipúzcoa, Spain) ( p < 0.05) were observed. There were no significant statistical differences between Corega ® (Stafford Miller, Ireland), Protefix ® (Neuhofer Weiche, Parchim, Germany), and tap water, even though the retention forces decreased in all of them.

This paper presents a clinical case study investigating the pattern of a saxophonist's embouchure as a possible origin of orofacial pain. The rehabilitation addressed the dental occlusion and a fracture in a metal ceramic bridge. To evaluate the undesirable loads on the upper teeth, two piezoresistive sensors were placed between the central incisors and the mouthpiece during the embouchure. A newly fixed metal ceramic prosthesis was placed from teeth 13 to 25, and two implants were placed in the premolar zone corresponding to teeth 14 and 15. After the oral rehabilitation, the embouchure force measurements showed that higher stability was promoted by the newly fixed metal-ceramic prosthesis. The musician executed a more symmetric loading of the central incisors (teeth 11 and 21). The functional demands of the saxophone player and consequent application of excessive pressure can significantly influence and modify the metal-ceramic position on the anterior zone teeth 21/22. The contribution of engineering (i.e., monitoring the applied forces on the musician's dental structures) was therefore crucial for the correct assessment and design of the treatment plan.

Objectives: Diet is important for the appropriate development and maturation of young amateur athletes. The aim of this study was to determine whether young gymnasts were consuming adequate amounts of nutrients, particularly calcium and iron., Methods: This cross-sectional survey was conducted in Portugal's Almada and Lisbon regions in 2020. To determine if participants' diet was adequate, weight, height, and skinfold measurements were taken. Dietary consumption was examined using two 24-h recalls. We collected data from 66 participants (60% females, 12-18 y of age), of whom 82% had normal weight and 39% had ideal body fat., Results: The daily total energy intake (TEI) was1605 ± 601 kcal. Of the TEI, 19%, 31%, and 50% were comprised of protein, fat, and carbohydrates, respectively. The most often consumed protein sources were poultry and ultra-processed meat products (52% and 45%, respectively). The average daily consumption of calcium and iron was 626 ± 293 and 9 ± 3 mg, respectively. Only 2 of the 66 participants had calcium intake within recommended levels, and 1of 5 had iron intake within recommended levels, the percentage of which was lower in girls than boys (7.5% versus 38.5%, P < 0.05)., Conclusions: Despite having a sufficient macronutrient distribution, Portuguese gymnasts consume a high amount of ultra-processed items and a low amount of calcium and iron. Post transition metal chalcohalides are an emerging class of semiconductor materials for optoelectronic applications. Within this class, bismuth oxyiodide (BiOI) is of particular interest due to its high environmental stability, low toxicity, and defect tolerance considered typical of 'ns 2 ' materials. Here we fabricate BiOI thin films using a solution-processed method that affords pin-hole free highly pure films without any residual carbon or other contaminant species. Based on these films, solution processed all-inorganic solar cells with an architecture ITO/NiO x /BiOI/ZnO/Al are fabricated for the first time. Additional device improvements are realised by templating BiOI thin film growth to attain efficiencies that rival some of the best vacuum deposited devices. The BiOI thin films and devices outlined here are an excellent platform for the further development of solution processed bismuth chalcohalide optoelectronic devices., (Creative Commons Attribution license.)

Purpose: To evaluate a novel 2D simultaneous multi-slice (SMS) myocardial perfusion acquisition and compare directly to a published quantitative 3D stack-of-stars (SoS) acquisition., Methods: A hybrid saturation recovery radial 2D SMS sequence following a single saturation was created for the quantification of myocardial blood flow (MBF). This sequence acquired three slices simultaneously and generated an arterial input function (AIF) using the first 24 rays. Validation was done in a novel way by alternating heartbeats between the hybrid 2D SMS and the 3D SoS acquisitions. Initial studies were done to study the effects of using only every other beat for the 2D SMS in two subjects, and for the 3D SoS in four subjects. The proposed alternating acquisitions were then performed in ten dog studies at rest, four dog studies at adenosine stress, and two human resting studies. Quantitative MBF analysis was performed for 2D SMS and 3D SoS separately, using a compartment model., Results: Acquiring every-other-beat data resulted in 6 ± 5% ("ideal") and 11 ± 8% ("practical") perfusion changes for both 2D SMS and 3D SoS methods. For alternating acquisitions, 2D SMS and 3D SoS quantitative perfusion values were comparable for both the twelve rest studies (2D SMS: 0.69 ± 0.16 vs 3D: 0.69 ± 0.15 ml/g/min, p = 0.55) and the four stress studies (2D SMS: 1.28 ± 0.22 vs 3D: 1.30 ± 0.24 ml/g/min, p = 0.61)., Conclusion: Every-other-beat acquisition changed estimated perfusion values relatively little for both sequences.
