Lumbar ligamentous flavum hematoma (LFH) is a relatively rare pathology, and it is difficult to differentiate it from other cystic lesions. Full-endoscopic spine surgery (FESS), an excellent approach for clear and magnified operative visual field since it allows saline irrigation and minimizes destruction of surrounding tissues, has been applied to the treatment. This study aims to present a case series of patients with lumbar LFH treated by FESS.This case series consists of 17 lumbar LFH cases treated by FESS between May 2018 and November 2021 at a single institution. Patient background and operative data were collected from their medical records. The numerical rating scale (NRS), Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), and European Quality of Life-5 Dimensions (EQ-5D) were recorded preoperatively and postoperatively.Elderly men tend to suffer from lumbar LFH at the L4/5 vertebral level. Discontinuity with facet joint was confirmed under endoscopic visualization in all 17 cases. Blood clots were also observed in all cases under endoscope. The mean operative time was 68.6 min without complication. The patients were discharged at average 1.4 days after FESS with significant improvement of NRS score (P < 0.001). ODI and EQ-5D scores 2-year postoperatively statistically improved (P < 0.001), and there was no recurrence during followup period.The operative outcomes of lumbar LFH treated by FESS were satisfactory. FESS excels not only in the diagnosis but also in the treatment of lumbar LFH.

Wound healing of partially incised Arabidopsis inflorescence stems constitutes cell proliferation that initiates mainly in pith tissues about three days after incision, and that the healing process completes in about seven days. Although the initiation mechanisms of cell proliferation have been well documented, the suppression mechanisms remain elusive. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are zinc-dependent endopeptidases well-known as proteolytic enzymes in animal systems functioning in extracellular matrix remodeling during physiological and pathological processes, including tissue differentiation, growth, defense, wound healing, and control of cancer growth. In this study, we report At2-MMP might contribute to the suppression mechanism of cell proliferation during tissue-repair process of incised inflorescence stems. At2-MMP transcript was gradually upregulated from day 0 to 5 after incision, and slightly decreased on day 7. Morphological analysis of incised stem of defected mutant at2-mmp revealed significantly enhanced cell proliferation around the incision site. Consistent with this, semi-quantitative analysis of dividing cells displayed a significant increment in the number of dividing cells in at2-mmp as compared to WT. These results showed that the upregulation of At2-MMP at the later stage of wound-healing process is likely to be involved in the completion of the process by attenuating the cell proliferation., (© The Author(s) 2024. Background: Disorders of the trigeminal nerve, a sensory nerve of the orofacial region, often lead to complications in dental practice, including neuropathic pain, allodynia, and ectopic pain. Management of these complications requires an understanding of the cytoarchitecture of the trigeminal ganglion, where the cell bodies of the trigeminal nerve are located, and the mechanisms of cell-cell interactions., Highlights: In the trigeminal ganglion, ganglion, satellite, Schwann, and immune cells coexist and interact. Cell-cell interactions are complex and occur through direct contact via gap junctions or through mediators such as adenosine triphosphate, nitric oxide, peptides, and cytokines. Interactions between the nervous and immune systems within the trigeminal ganglion may have neuroprotective effects during nerve injury or may exacerbate inflammation and produce chronic pain. Under pathological conditions of the trigeminal nerve, cell-cell interactions can cause allodynia and ectopic pain. Although cell-cell interactions that occur via mediators can act at some distance, they are more effective when the cells are close together. Therefore, information on the three-dimensional topography of trigeminal ganglion cells is essential for understanding the pathophysiology of ectopic pain., Conclusions: A three-dimensional map of the somatotopic localization of trigeminal ganglion neurons revealed that ganglion cells innervating distant orofacial regions are often apposed to each other, interacting with and potentially contributing to ectopic pain. Recent single-cell RNA-sequencing analysis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) synovial tissues revealed the heterogeneity of RA synovial fibroblasts (SFs) with distinct functions such as high IL-6 production. The molecular mechanisms responsible for high IL-6 production will become a promising drug target of RASFs to treat RA. In this study, we performed siRNA screening of 65 transcription factors (TFs) differentially expressed among RASF subsets to identify TFs involved in IL-6 production. The siRNA screening identified 7 TFs including ARID5B , a RA risk gene, that affected IL-6 production. Both long and short isoforms of ARID5B were expressed and negatively regulated by TNF-α in RASFs. The siRNA knockdown and lentiviral overexpression of long and short isoforms of ARID5B revealed that the long isoform suppressed IL-6 production stimulated with TNF-α. eQTL analysis using 58 SFs demonstrated that RA risk allele, rs10821944, in intron 4 of the ARID5B gene had a trend of eQTL effects to the expression of long isoform of ARID5B in SFs treated with TNF-α. ARID5B was found to be a negative modulator of IL-6 production in RASFs. The RA risk allele of ARID5B intron may cause high IL-6 production, suggesting that ARID5B will become a promising drug target to treat RA.

Purpose: To compare surgical outcomes of regenerative treatment (RT) including basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) (Group-R) with the conventional method (Group-C) for patients with tympanic membrane perforation (TMP), both of whom underwent transcanal endoscopic ear surgery., Methods: The study population of Group-R included 61 ears of 59 patients treated with RT-TMP in which TMP edges were disrupted mechanically and a gelatin sponge immersed in bFGF was inserted into the TMP. Fibrin glue was then dripped over the sponge. Group-C consisted of 13 patients who underwent conventional surgery before adopting the RT-TMP. Patients' characteristics and outcomes including TMP closure rates, and change in hearing level were evaluated three or more weeks after the surgery., Results: The baseline characteristics including size of TMP were not significantly different between the two groups. Although Group-R had significantly shorter operating time than Group-C, the complete TMP closure rates were 69 % (9/13) and 85 % (52/61), respectively. Air-conduction hearing thresholds showed significant improvements, and analysis of variance showed that Group-R achieved significant interactions other than at 8 kHz, implying better improvement in cases with TMP closure. The air-bone gaps also improved at all frequencies in both groups. Specifically, at 4 kHz, there was a trend showing better improvement in Group-R., Conclusion: RT-TMP had a high TMP closure rate and good hearing improvement, with no significant differences compared with those of conventional surgery. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the utility of minor salivary glands in the hypopharynx as novel indicators for safe resection of superficial hypopharyngeal carcinomas with fewer complications., Study Design: Cadaveric study., Setting: Cadavers were stored in the pathology laboratory at Kansai Medical University., Methods: Twenty-three cadaveric specimens were examined for minor salivary glands in the pyriform sinus, posterior wall, and postcricoid regions of the hypopharynx. Their count, size, and depth were assessed. Resected specimens from 5 consecutive patients with superficial hypopharyngeal carcinomas were pathologically analyzed to determine the positional relationship between cancer and minor salivary glands., Results: Minor salivary glands were present in more than 70% of patients in each region during autopsy, with the postcricoid region having a larger count and size. The glands were universally present, regardless of sex, height, or body mass index. Minor salivary glands in the pyriform sinus and postcricoid region were present at a depth of 30% from the bottom of the submucosal layer, whereas those in the posterior wall were present in the shallow muscularis. During surgery, endoscopic findings revealed minor salivary glands as small white nodules in the submucosal layer. Pathological examination of the resected specimen confirmed that the white nodule was a minor salivary gland. Cervical radiculopathy might affect finger movement and dexterity. Postoperative features and clinical outcomes comparing C8 radiculopathies with other radiculopathies are unknown. This prospective multicenter study analyzed 359 patients undergoing single-level surgery for pure cervical radiculopathy (C5, 48; C6, 132; C7, 149; C8, 30). Background data and pre- and 1-year postoperative neck disability index (NDI) and numerical rating scale (NRS) scores were collected. The C5-7 and C8 radiculopathy groups were compared after propensity score matching, with clinical significance determined by minimal clinically important differences (MCID). Postoperative arm numbness was significantly higher than upper back or neck numbness, and arm pain was reduced the most (3.4 points) after surgery among the C5-8 radiculopathy groups. The C8 radiculopathy group had worse postoperative NDI scores (p = 0.026), upper back pain (p = 0.042), change in arm pain NRS scores (p = 0.021), and upper back numbness (p = 0.028) than the C5-7 group. NDI achieved MCID in both groups, but neck and arm pain NRS did not achieve MCID in the C8 group. In conclusion, although arm numbness persisted, arm pain was relieved after surgery for cervical radiculopathy. COVID-19, caused by SARS-CoV-2 infection, results in irreversible or fatal lung injury. We assumed that necroptosis of virus-infected alveolar epithelial cells (AEC) could promote local inflammation and further lung injury in COVID-19. Since CD8+ lymphocytes induced AEC cell death via cytotoxic molecules such as FAS ligands, we examined the involvement of FAS-mediated cell death in COVID-19 patients and murine COVID-19 model. We identified the occurrence of necroptosis and subsequent release of HMGB1 in the admitted patients with COVID-19. In the mouse model of COVID-19, lung inflammation and injury were attenuated in Fas-deficient mice compared to Fas-intact mice. The infection enhanced Type I interferon-inducible genes in both groups, while inflammasome-associated genes were specifically upregulated in Fas-intact mice. The treatment with necroptosis inhibitor, Nec1s, improved survival rate, lung injury, and systemic inflammation. Background: In view of improving biomarkers predicting the efficacy of immunotherapy for head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (R/M HNSCC), this multicenter retrospective study aimed to identify clinical, tumor microenvironmental, and genomic factors that are related to therapeutic response to the anti- Programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1) antibody, nivolumab, in patients with R/M HNSCC., Methods: The study compared 53 responders and 47 non-responders, analyzing formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded samples using 14-marker multiplex immunohistochemistry and targeted gene sequencing., Results: Of 100 patients included, responders had significantly lower smoking and alcohol index, higher incidence of immune related adverse events, and higher PD-1 ligand (PD-L1) expression in immune cells as well as PD-L1 combined positive score (CPS) than non-responders. The frequency of natural killer cells was associated with nivolumab response in patients with prior cetuximab use, but not in cetuximab-naïve status. Age-stratified analysis showed nivolumab response was linked to high CPS and lymphoid-inflamed profiles in patients aged ≥ 65. In contrast, lower NLR in peripheral blood counts was associated with response in patients aged < 65. Notably, TP53 mutation-positive group had lower CPS and T cell densities, suggesting an immune-excluded microenvironment. Study Design: Retrospective cohort study., Objective: The aim of the present study is to investigate the coexisting lower back pain (LBP) in patients with cervical myelopathy and to evaluate changes in LBP after cervical spine surgery., Summary of Background Data: Only a few studies with a small number of participants have evaluated the association between cervical myelopathy surgery and postoperative improvement in LBP., Methods: Patients who underwent primary cervical decompression surgery with or without fusion for myelopathy and completed preoperative and 1-year postoperative questionnaires were reviewed using a prospectively collected database involving 9 tertiary referral hospitals. The questionnaires included the patient-reported Japanese Orthopaedic Association (PRO-JOA) score and Numerical Rating Scales (NRS). The minimum clinically important difference (MCID) for NRS-LBP was defined as >30% improvement from baseline. Patient demographics, characteristics, and PRO-JOA score were compared between patients with and without concurrent LBP, and the contributor to achieving the MCID for LBP was analyzed using logistic regression analysis., Results: A total of 786 consecutive patients with cervical myelopathy were included, of which 525 (67%) presented with concurrent LBP. LBP was associated with a higher body mass index ( P <0.001) and worse preoperative PRO-JOA score ( P <0.001). Among the 525 patients with concurrent LBP, the mean postoperative NRS-LBP significantly improved from 4.5±2.4 to 3.4±2.7 ( P <0.01) postoperatively, with 248 (47%) patients reaching the MCID cutoff. Patients with a PRO-JOA recovery rate >50% were more likely to achieve MCID compared with those with a recovery rate <0% (adjusted odd ratio 4.02, P <0.001)., Conclusions: More than 50% of patients with myelopathy reported improvement in LBP after cervical spine surgery, and 47% achieved the MCID for LBP, which was positively correlated with a better PRO-JOA recovery rate. Electron tomography based on scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) is used to analyze 3D structures of metal nanoparticles on the atomic scale. However, in the case of supported metal nanoparticle catalysts, the supporting material may interfere with the 3D reconstruction of metal nanoparticles. In this study, a deep learning-based image inpainting method is applied to high-angle annular dark field (HAADF)-STEM images of a supported metal nanoparticle to predict and remove the background image of the support. The inpainting method can separate an 11 nm Pd nanoparticle from the θ-Al 2 O 3 support in HAADF-STEM images of the θ-Al 2 O 3 -supported Pd catalyst. 3D reconstruction of the extracted images of the Pd nanoparticle reveals that the Pd nanoparticle adopts a deformed structure of the cuboctahedron model particle, resulting in high index surfaces, which account for the high catalytic activity for methane combustion. Using the xyz coordinate of each Pd atom, the local Pd-Pd bond distance and its variance in a real supported Pd nanoparticle are visualized, showing large strain and disorder at the Pd-Al 2 O 3 interface. When a mass occurs at the staple line following lung resection, it can be difficult to distinguish between local cancer recurrence and granuloma. We present a case of a staple-line granuloma with 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography uptake and elevated serum carbohydrate antigen 19-9 (CA19-9) in a patient with ovarian cancer lung metastasis. After granuloma resection, serum CA19-9 levels normalized, and CA19-9 positive cells were identified in the resected tumor. Therefore, serum CA19-9 elevation does not rule out a staple-line granuloma. Whereas granulomas on computed tomography (CT) scans tend to show smooth shadows along the staple line unilaterally, detailed CT evaluation may help diagnostic differentiation. Differentiation based on imaging and tumor markers has limitations. However, core needle biopsy has the risk of misdiagnosis and tumor cell dissemination, therefore surgical resection should be considered when comprehensive findings indicate a potential recurrence., (© 2024 The Author(s). Introduction: Determining a surgical strategy for early-stage lung cancer requires an accurate histologic diagnosis. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) enables reliable diagnosis of histological types but requires more time and more tumor tissue slides than hematoxylin and eosin staining. We aimed to assess the clinical validity of a new rapid multiplex IHC technique utilizing alternating current (AC) mixing for intraoperative lung cancer diagnosis., Methods: Forty-three patients who underwent radical resection of lung cancers were enrolled in a retrospective observational study. Frozen sections were prepared from lung tumor samples, and rapid IHC employing AC mixing was implemented alongside a multiplex IHC protocol targeting thyroid transcription factor-1 + cytokeratin 5, desmoglein 3 + Napsin A, and p63 + tripartite motif containing 29. We then evaluated the concordance between intraoperative diagnoses derived from rapid multiplex IHC and final pathology., Results: The concordance rate between the pathological diagnosis made with added rapid multiplex IHC and the final pathology was 93.0% (Cohen's 𝜅 coefficient = 0.860 and 95% CI: 0.727-0.993). The severity of COVID-19 has been reported to differ among SARS-CoV-2 mutant variants. The overactivation of macrophages is involved in severe COVID-19, yet the effects of SARS-CoV-2 mutations on macrophages remain poorly understood. To clarify the effects, we examined whether mutations of spike proteins (S-proteins) affect macrophage activation. CD14 + monocyte-derived macrophages were stimulated with the recombinant S-protein of the wild-type, Delta, and Omicron strains or live viral particles of individual strains. Regarding IL-6 and TNF-α, Delta or Omicron S-protein had stronger or weaker pro‑inflammatory ability, respectively, than the wild-type. Similar trends were observed between S-proteins and viral particles. Background: Immuno-oncology (IO) drugs are essential for treating various cancer types; however, safety concerns persist in older patients. Although the incidence of immune-related adverse events (irAEs) is similar among age groups, higher rates of hospitalization or discontinuation of IO therapy have been reported in older patients. Limited research exists on IO drug safety and risk factors in older adults. Our investigation aimed to assess the incidence of irAEs and identify the potential risk factors associated with their development., Methods: This retrospective analysis reviewed the clinical data extracted from the medical records of patients aged > 80 years who underwent IO treatment at our institution. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to assess the incidence of irAEs., Results: Our study included 181 patients (median age: 82 years, range: 80-94), mostly men (73%), with a performance status of 0-1 in 87% of the cases; 64% received IO monotherapy. irAEs occurred in 35% of patients, contributing to IO therapy discontinuation in 19%. Our analysis highlighted increased body mass index, eosinophil counts, and albumin levels in patients with irAEs. Eosinophil count emerged as a significant risk factor for any grade irAEs, particularly Grade 3 or higher, with a cutoff of 118 (/μL). The group with eosinophil counts > 118 had a higher frequency of irAEs, and Grade 3 or higher events than the group with counts ≤ 118., Conclusion: IO therapy is a safe treatment option for patients > 80 years old. Study Design: Retrospective Comparative Study., Objectives: To compare the outcomes of microendoscopic discectomy (MED) versus full-endoscopic discectomy (FED) for treating L4/5 lumbar disc herniation (LDH)., Methods: A retrospective study was performed on patients with L4/5 LDH treated using MED (n = 249) or FED (n = 124). A 16-mm tubular retractor and endoscope was used for MED, while a 4.1-mm working channel endoscope was used for FED. Patient background and operative data were collected. The Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) and European Quality of Life-5 Dimensions (EQ-5D) scores were recorded preoperatively and at 1 and 2 years postsurgery., Results: The background data of the two groups were similar. The mean operation times for MED and FED were 59.3 and 47.7 min (respectively), and the mean volumes of removed nucleus pulposus were .65 and 1.03 g, respectively. These differences were significant ( P < .001). Six dural tears and one postoperative hematoma were observed in the MED group; none were observed in the FED group. During the follow-up period, 16 MED and 7 FED patients required re-operation due to recurrence ( P = 1.00). Although the ODI and EQ-5D scores significantly improved at 1 and 2 years postsurgery in both groups, the differences were not statistically significant., Conclusions: Operative outcomes were almost identical in both groups. We did not observe any operative or postoperative complications in FED. Introduction: Eosinophils contribute to the pathogenesis of allergic diseases, including asthma, allergic rhinitis, and atopic dermatitis. We previously reported that human tissue eosinophils have high CD69 expression compared to blood eosinophils, and its expression is correlated with disease severity and the number of infiltrated eosinophils. However, biological CD69 signaling activity in eosinophils remains unclear., Methods: CD69 expression on lung tissue eosinophils obtained from mice with ovalbumin-induced asthma was measured using flow cytometry. CD69 crosslinking was performed on eosinophils purified from the spleen of IL-5 transgenic mice to investigate CD69 signaling and its function in eosinophils. Then, qPCR, Western blot, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and survival assay results were analyzed., Results: Surface CD69 expression on lung tissue eosinophils in the asthma mice model was 2.91% ± 0.76%, whereas no expression was detected in the healthy group. CD69-expressed eosinophils intrinsically have an upregulation of IL-10 mRNA expression. Moreover, CD69 crosslinking induced further pronounced IL-10 production and apoptosis; these responses were mediated via the Erk1/2 and JNK pathways, respectively., Conclusions: Our results suggested that CD69 + eosinophils play an immunoregulator role in type 2 inflammation, whereas activated tissue eosinophils contribute to the pathogenesis of asthma.

Introduction: The association between postoperative patient-reported outcomes (PROs) and patient satisfaction remains poorly defined in patients undergoing surgery for thoracic myelopathy. This study aimed to investigate PROs and patient satisfaction following surgical intervention for thoracic myelopathy., Methods: A prospective cohort of 133 patients who underwent surgery for thoracic myelopathy at 13 hospitals between April 2017 and August 2021 was enrolled. Patient demographics and perioperative complications were recorded. PROs were assessed using questionnaires administered preoperatively and 1 year postoperatively, including the EuroQol-5 dimension, physical and mental component summaries of the 12-item Short-Form Health Survey, Oswestry Disability Index, and numerical rating scales for low back, lower extremity, and plantar pain. Patients were categorized into two groups: satisfied (very satisfied, satisfied, and slightly satisfied) and dissatisfied (neither satisfied nor dissatisfied, slightly dissatisfied, dissatisfied, and very dissatisfied)., Results: The mean age of the patients was 66.5 years, comprising 87 men and 46 women. The most common diagnoses were ossification of the ligamentum flavum (48.8%) and thoracic spondylotic myelopathy (26.3%). Seventy-four (55.6%) and 59 (44.3%) patients underwent decompression surgery and underwent decompression with fusion, respectively. Eight patients required reoperation due to postoperative surgical site infection, hematoma, and insufficient decompression in four, three, and one patient. Ninety (67.7%) patients completed both the preoperative and postoperative PRO questionnaires, all of which demonstrated significant improvement. Among them, 58 (64.4%) and 32 (35.6%) reported satisfaction and dissatisfaction with their treatment, respectively. The satisfied group showed superior improvement in PROs than the dissatisfied group, although there were no significant differences in complication rates between the two groups., Conclusions: The 64.4% satisfaction rate observed in patients undergoing surgery for thoracic myelopathy was lower than that reported in previous studies on cervical or lumbar spine surgery. Background: Several reports have highlighted comparable surgical outcomes between microendoscopic laminectomy (MEL) and open laminectomy (open) for lumbar spinal stenosis. However, the unilateral approach in MEL may present challenges for the upper lumbar levels, where facet joints are located deeper inside. Our objective was to compare surgical outcomes and radiographic evaluations for single-level decompression cases at L1-L2 or L2-L3 between MEL and open laminectomy., Methods: We analyzed patients who underwent single-level decompression for upper lumbar spinal stenosis at 12 distinguished spine centers from April 2017 to September 2021. Baseline demographics, preoperative, and 1-year postoperative patient-reported outcomes, along with imaging parameters, were compared between the MEL and open groups. To account for potential confounding, patients' backgrounds were adjusted using the inverse probability weighting method based on propensity scores., Results: Among the 2487 patients undergoing decompression surgery, 118 patients (4.7%) underwent single-level decompression at L1-L2 or L2-L3. Finally, 80 patients (51 in the MEL group, 29 in the open group) with postoperative data were deemed eligible for analysis. The MEL group exhibited significantly improved postoperative EuroQol 5-Dimension values compared to the open group. Additionally, the MEL group showed a lower facet preservation rate according to computed tomography examination, whereas the open group had a higher incidence of retrolisthesis., Conclusions: Although overall surgical outcomes were similar, the MEL group demonstrated potential advantages in enhancing EuroQol 5-Dimension scores. The trigeminal nerve is the sensory afferent of the orofacial regions and divided into three major branches. Cell bodies of the trigeminal nerve lie in the trigeminal ganglion and are surrounded by satellite cells. There is a close interaction between ganglion cells via satellite cells, but the function is not fully understood. In the present study, we clarified the ganglion cells' three-dimensional (3D) localization, which is essential to understand the functions of cell-cell interactions in the trigeminal ganglion. Fast blue was injected into 12 sites of the rat orofacial regions, and ganglion cells were retrogradely labeled. The labeled trigeminal ganglia were cleared by modified 3DISCO, imaged with confocal laser-scanning microscopy, and reconstructed in 3D. Histograms of the major axes of the fast blue-positive somata revealed that the peak major axes of the cells innervating the skin/mucosa were smaller than those of cells innervating the deep structures. Ganglion cells innervating the ophthalmic, maxillary, and mandibular divisions were distributed in the anterodorsal, central, and posterolateral portions of the trigeminal ganglion, respectively, with considerable overlap in the border region. The intermingling in the distribution of ganglion cells within each division was also high, in particular, within the mandibular division. Specifically, intermingling was observed in combinations of tongue and masseter/temporal muscles, maxillary/mandibular molars and masseter/temporal muscles, and tongue and mandibular molars. Double retrograde labeling confirmed that some ganglion cells innervating these combinations were closely apposed. Background: Unilateral biportal endoscopic lumbar discectomy (UBELD) is a new minimally invasive spine surgery. The purpose of this study is to describe a new surgical method to treat intracanal lumbar disc herniation (LDH) using the unilateral biportal endoscopic transforaminal approach (UBE-TFA). The first 15 patients who had undergone UBELD for single-level LDH were included in this study. Operative time, intraoperative blood loss, postoperative stay, and intraoperative complications were recorded. The Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), numeric rating scale (NRS) score for leg pain, and modified MacNab criteria were assessed at 3 months postoperatively., Observations: The mean operative time was 52.0 ± 13.8 minutes. The mean intraoperative blood loss was 10.5 ± 10.2 mL. The mean postoperative stay was 1.1 ± 0.3 days. There were no complications. The postoperative mean ODI was significantly improved from 44.9 ± 14.4 to 7.7 ± 11.2 at the final follow-up (p < 0.001). There was a significant decrease in the postoperative mean NRS score for leg pain, from 6.1 ± 1.9 to 0.8 ± 1.3 at the final follow-up (p < 0.001). Based on the modified MacNab criteria, good to excellent results were obtained in 86.7% of the patients., Lessons: We considered UBELD-TFA as not only one of the promising surgical methods for UBELD, but also a new surgical implementation of the TFA.

Background: We previously compared the operative outcomes of microendoscopic laminectomy (MEL) and full-endoscopic laminectomy (FEL) for single-level lumbar spinal canal stenosis (LSCS). In this initial report, the operative outcomes of FEL were not inferior to those of MEL., Objective: The purpose of this study is to compare the outcomes of MEL and FEL for single-level LSCS on a large scale using widely used multiple evaluation methods., Methods: MEL was performed using a 16 mm tubular retractor and an endoscope, while FEL was performed using a 6.4 mm working channel endoscope. A retrospective study was performed on patients with LSCS treated with MEL (n = 355) or FEL (n = 154). Patient background and operative data were also collected. The Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), European Quality of Life-5 Dimensions (EQ-5D), and 36-item Short Form Survey (SF-36) scores were recorded preoperatively and 1-year postoperatively., Results: Background data of the two groups and the mean operation time (MEL, 72.1 m; FEL, 74.2 m) were not significant (p>0.2). The mean volumes of intraoperative bleeding (MEL, 25.2 ml; FEL, 10.3 ml) were significantly different (p<0.001). The mean postoperative hospital stays (MEL, 3.9 days; FEL, 2.1 days) were significantly different (p<0.001). Fifteen dural tears (MEL, 11; FEL, 4) and 1 surgical site infection (MEL, 1; FEL, 0) were observed but not significant (p>0.5). Reoperation was required for postoperative hematoma in five patients (MEL, 3; FEL, 2). Although the ODI, EQ-5D, and SF-36 scores improved significantly at one year postoperatively in the MEL and FEL groups (p<0.001), there were no significant differences between the two groups (p>0.1)., Conclusion: The operative outcomes and minimal invasiveness were no statistical difference between the MEL and FEL groups. Multidimensional NMR spectra are the basis for studying proteins by NMR spectroscopy and crucial for the development and evaluation of methods for biomolecular NMR data analysis. Nevertheless, in contrast to derived data such as chemical shift assignments in the BMRB and protein structures in the PDB databases, this primary data is in general not publicly archived. To change this unsatisfactory situation, we present a standardized set of solution NMR data comprising 1329 2-4-dimensional NMR spectra and associated reference (chemical shift assignments, structures) and derived (peak lists, restraints for structure calculation, etc.) annotations. With the 100-protein NMR spectra dataset that was originally compiled for the development of the ARTINA deep learning-based spectra analysis method, 100 protein structures can be reproduced from their original experimental data. The 100-protein NMR spectra dataset is expected to help the development of computational methods for NMR spectroscopy, in particular machine learning approaches, and enable consistent and objective comparisons of these methods., (© 2024. Programmed-cell-death 1 (PD-1) expression is associated not only with T-cell activation but with exhaustion. Specifically, PD-1 + T cells present an exhausted phenotype in conditions of chronic antigen exposure, such as tumor microenvironments and chronic viral infection. However, the immune status regarding exhaustion of PD-1 + CD8 + T cells in chronic autoimmune diseases including idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIMs) remains unclear. We aimed to clarify the role of PD-1 + CD8 + T cells and PD-1 ligand (PD-L1) in IIMs. We showed that PD-1 + cells infiltrated into PD-L1-expressing muscles in patients with IIMs and immune checkpoint inhibitor-related myopathy. According to the peripheral blood immunophenotyping, the PD-1 + CD8 + cell proportions were comparable between the active and inactive patients. Of note, PD-1 + CD8 + cells in the active patients highly expressed cytolytic molecules, indicating their activation, while PD-1 - CD8 + cells expressed low levels of cytolytic molecules in the active and inactive patients. A part of PD-1 + CD8 + cells expressed the HMG-box transcription factor TOX highly and presented the exhausted phenotype in the active patients. Among PD-1 + CD4 + T cells, PD-1 high CXCR5 - CD45RO + CD4 + peripheral helper T cells were increased in the active patients. PD-L1-deficient mice developed severer C-protein-induced myositis (CIM), a model of polymyositis, with abundant infiltration of PD-1 + CD8 + cells expressing cytolytic molecules than wild-type mice, indicating pathogenicity of the PD-1 + CD8 + cells and the protective role of PD-L1. The deficiency of IFNγ, a general PD-L1-inducer, impaired muscular PD-L1 expression and exacerbated CIM, indicating IFNγ-dependent muscular PD-L1 regulation. IFNγ-induced PD-L1 on myotubes was protective in an established muscle injury model. Background: Histopathology by pathologists is essential in the diagnosis of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, auxiliary diagnostic procedures for malignant tumor have continued to evolve. Despite the poor prognosis of patients with NSCLC, the application of the latest procedures and technologies to the field of lung cancer has lagged. Mass spectrometry was used to detect trace amounts of peptides in human tissue with high accuracy. The aim of this study was to establish a method for diagnostic mass spectrometry to identify lymph node metastasis by detecting cytokeratin (CK)19, a useful biomarker in lung cancer., Methods: We collected 81 lymph nodes with positive expression of CK19 in patients who underwent radical surgical resection in the Department of Thoracic Surgery at Iwate Medical University between May 2020 and December 2022. An X500R instrument was used for sample analysis. A positive result for lymph node metastasis as the detection at least two product ions (FGPGVAFR and ILGATIENSR) from CK19 was defined., Results: Our study indicated a high diagnostic efficiency for mass spectrometry, with 87.5% sensitivity and 91.2% specificity. The structures of cell wall mannan hemicelluloses have changed during plant evolution. Recently, a new structure called β-galactoglucomannan (β-GGM) was discovered in eudicot plants. This galactoglucomannan has β-(1,2)-Gal-α-(1,6)-Gal disaccharide branches on some mannosyl residues of the strictly alternating Glc-Man backbone. Studies in Arabidopsis revealed β-GGM is related in structure, biosynthesis and function to xyloglucan. However, when and how plants acquired β-GGM remains elusive. Here, we studied mannan structures in many sister groups of eudicots. All glucomannan structures were distinct from β-GGM. In addition, we searched for candidate mannan β-galactosyltransferases (MBGT) in non-eudicot angiosperms. Candidate AtMBGT1 orthologues from rice (OsGT47A-VII) and Amborella (AtrGT47A-VII) did not show MBGT activity in vivo. However, the AtMBGT1 orthologue from rice showed MUR3-like xyloglucan galactosyltransferase activity in complementation analysis using Arabidopsis. Further, reverse genetic analysis revealed that the enzyme (OsGT47A-VII) contributes to proper root growth in rice. Together, gene duplication and diversification of GT47A-VII in eudicot evolution may have been involved in the acquisition of mannan β-galactosyltransferase activity. A coherent Doppler LIDAR (CDL) with long-duration frequency-modulated pulses was demonstrated and validated by analyzing the data observed by a prototype. In traditional CDL using short-duration single-frequency pulses (PCDL; pulsed CDL), there exists a trade-off relationship between distance and velocity resolution. Meanwhile, in earlier work, a theoretical framework of CDL using long-duration frequency-modulated pulses (FMCDL; frequency-modulated CDL) was put forth to eliminate the trade-off. We developed the prototype to be operated as both a PCDL and FMCDL. Analyses of data observed by the PCDL and FMCDL modes showed that the FMCDL worked in good agreement with the PCDL for wind ranging and velocimetry. Furthermore, the performance of the FMCDL in terms of received power and resolution of distance and velocity was quantitatively consistent with ones theoretically expected.

Introduction: Physical activity is recommended as an alternative treatment for depression. Myokines, which are secreted from skeletal muscles during physical activity, play an important role in the skeletal muscle-brain axis. Musclin, a newly discovered myokine, exerts physical endurance, however, the effects of musclin on emotional behaviors, such as depression, have not been evaluated. This study aimed to access the anti-depressive effect of musclin and clarify the connection between depression-like behavior and hypothalamic neuropeptides in mice., Methods: We measured the immobility time in the forced swim (FS) test, the time spent in open arm in the elevated-plus maze (EPM) test, the mRNA levels of hypothalamic neuropeptides, and enumerated the c-Fos-positive cells in the paraventricular nucleus (PVN), arcuate nucleus (ARC), and nucleus tractus solitarii (NTS) in mice with the intraperitoneal (i.p.) administration of musclin. Next, we evaluated the effects of a selective corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) type 1 receptor antagonist, selective CRF type 2 receptor antagonist, melanocortin receptor (MCR) agonist, and selective melanocortin 4 receptor (MC4R) agonist on changes in behaviors induced by musclin. Finally we evaluated the antidepressant effect of musclin using mice exposed to repeated water immersion (WI) stress., Results: We found that the i.p. and i.c.v. administration of musclin decreased the immobility time and relative time in the open arms (open %) in mice and increased urocortin 2 (Ucn 2) levels but decreased proopiomelanocortin levels in the hypothalamus. The numbers of c-Fos-positive cells were increased in the PVN and NTS but decreased in the ARC of mice with i.p. administration of musclin. The c-Fos-positive cells in the PVN were also found to be Ucn 2-positive. The antidepressant and anxiogenic effects of musclin were blocked by central administration of a CRF type 2 receptor antagonist and a melanocortin 4 receptor agonist, respectively. Objective: Data on risk factors for otogenic intracranial complications including cerebral abscess have been limited. Using a nationwide database, the aim was to identify the factors related to mortality and delayed discharge., Study Design: Retrospective., Setting: Nationwide database using the Diagnostic Procedure Combination database., Main Outcome Measures: Data of 145 patients were extracted from a Japanese inpatient database between 2012 and 2020. The main outcome was survival at discharge. In a subgroup analysis of the 137 surviving patients, the second outcome was delayed discharge., Results: The mortality rate was 5.5% (8 of 145). Logistic regression analyses identified intracerebral complications (adjusted odds ratio [OR], 3.09) and more than 2-day delay of the first surgery after admission (adjusted OR, 4.68) as risk factors for mortality. Specifically, consciousness level evaluated by the Japan Coma Scale (JCS) was significantly related to prolonged hospitalization or mortality: JCS I (adjusted OR, 3.40) and JCS ≥II (adjusted OR, 25.1)., Conclusions: Although otogenic intracranial complications are rare, and their mortality is decreasing because of the progress in imaging and clinical strategies, they remain the most severe complications of suppurative otitis media and/or cholesteatoma. The nucleic acid integrity of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) samples is poor, and the material available for genetic analysis is limited. Therefore, to expand the effectiveness of personalized medicine in patients with HNSCC, a new sampling method is needed. In total, 128 samples from 44 patients with HNSCC were studied: 32 genetic analysis samples (GASs) collected as 5 × 5 × 5 mm tissue fragments from resected large tumors and immediately embedded in a small formalin bottle within 10 min (i.e., the ischemic time), 43 primary tumor components (primary), 14 decalcified tumor (DC) samples, 32 metastatic tumors in lymph nodes (LNs), and 7 parakeratinized components (PKCs). The nucleic acid quality in the GAS, primary, DC, LN, and PKC groups was compared and next-generation sequencing (NGS) was performed. DNA integrity number and percentage of RNA fragments with > 200 nucleotides were significantly higher in the GAS group than those in the other groups. RNA integrity number decreased first in LN, followed by GAS, primary, and DC. No significant differences were observed in DIN, RIN and DV200 among the PKC, primary and LN. Following methyl green-pyronin staining, preserved DNA and RNA were not visualized in DC samples. Most NGS metrics did not differ significantly among primary, LN, and PKC samples. In conclusion, GASs should be collected during routine hospital activities. Eosinophilic airway inflammation, complicated by bronchial asthma and eosinophilic chronic rhinosinusitis (ECRS), is difficult to treat. The disease may become refractory when eosinophilic mucin associated with eosinophil peroxidase (EPX) and autoantibodies fills in the paranasal sinus and small airway. This study investigated the functional role of an anti-EPX antibody in eosinophilic mucin of ECRS in eosinophilic airway inflammation. Eosinophilic mucin was obtained from patients with ECRS. The effects of the anti-EPX antibody on dsDNA release from eosinophils and eosinophilic mucin decomposition were evaluated. Immunofluorescence or enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays were performed to detect the anti-EPX antibody and its supernatant and serum levels in eosinophilic mucin, respectively. The serum levels of the anti-EPX antibody were positively correlated with sinus computed tomography score and fractionated exhaled nitrogen oxide. Patients with refractory ECRS had higher serum levels of the anti-EPX antibody than those without. However, dupilumab treatment decreased the serum levels of the anti-EPX antibody. Immunoglobulins (Igs) in the immunoprecipitate of mucin supernatants enhanced dsDNA release from eosinophils, whereas the neutralization of Igs against EPX stopped dsDNA release. Furthermore, EPX antibody neutralization accelerated mucin decomposition and restored corticosteroid sensitivity. Taken together, the anti-EPX antibody may be involved in the formulation of eosinophilic mucin and be used as a clinical marker and therapeutic target for intractable eosinophilic airway inflammation.

Plants are exposed to a variety of biotic and abiotic stresses, including wounding at the stem. The healing process (tissue reunion) begins immediately after stem wounding. The plant hormone auxin plays an important role during tissue reunion. In decapitated stems, auxin transport from the shoot apex is reduced and tissue reunion does not occur but is restored by application of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA). In this study, we found that plasmodesmata callose binding protein 2 (PDCB2) affects the expansion of the cambium/phloem region via changes in auxin response during the process of tissue reunion. PDCB2 was expressed in the cortex and endodermis on the incised side of stems 1-3 days after incision. PDCB2-knockout plants showed reduced callose deposition at plasmodesmata and DR5::GUS activity in the endodermis/cortex in the upper region of the incision accompanied by an increase in size of the cambium/phloem region during tissue reunion. In addition, PIN(PIN-FORMED)3, which is involved in lateral auxin transport, was induced by auxin in the cambium/phloem and endodermis/cortex in the upper part of the incision in wild type, but its expression of PIN3 was decreased in pdcb2 mutant. Background: There is a strong demand for remote monitoring systems to gather health data. This study investigated the safety, usefulness, and patient satisfaction in outpatient care using telehealth with real-time electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring after catheter ablation. Methods and Results: In all, 38 patients who underwent catheter ablation were followed up using telehealth. At the 3- and 6-month follow-up, a self-fitted Duranta ECG monitoring device was sent to the patient's home before the online consultation. Patients attached the devices themselves, and the doctors viewed the patients by video chat and performed real-time ECG monitoring. The frequency of hospital visits and the ECG monitoring duration were compared with conventional in-person follow-up data (n=102). The completion rate for telehealth follow-up was 32 of 38 patients (84%). The number of hospital visits during the 6 months was significantly lower with telehealth follow-up than with conventional follow-up (median [interquartile range] 1 [1-1] vs. 5 [3-5]; P<0.0001). However, the ECG monitoring duration was approximately 4-fold longer for the telehealth follow-up (median [interquartile range] 89 [64-117] vs. 24 [0.1-24] h; P<0.0001). No major adverse events were observed during the telehealth follow-up. Patient surveys showed high satisfaction with telehealth follow-up due to reduced hospital visits. The purpose of this study was to introduce the application of a monoportal scope and bipolar coagulator used in full-endoscopic spine surgery (FESS) for unilateral biportal endoscopy-unilateral laminectomy bilateral decompression (UBE-ULBD) in those with central stenosis. A 68-year-old man who presented with cauda equina symptoms underwent UBE-ULBD to improve his central stenosis at the L2/3 level. In this technique, a FESS scope was attached to a camera portal in place of a common arthroscope. A decompression tool was subsequently inserted through the working portal, and the lower border of the vertebral lamina and the lower border of the contralateral lamina were resected. Additionally, the superior border of the L3 level was thinned using a high-speed drill, and the ligament flavum was excised. The operation time was 70 minutes, and his symptoms improved. The patient was discharged from the hospital four days postoperatively. We found three advantages of using a FESS scope and bipolar coagulator, including the ability to 1) stabilize the camera via placement of the sleeve against the bone, 2) minimize the wounded area by irrigating saline on the side of the scope, and 3) provide bipolar tissue hemostasis in an isolated area around the nerves. Background: The antitumour effects of interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) in humans with cutaneous epitheliotropic T-cell lymphoma (CETCL) have been described; however, the efficacy of IFN-γ in dogs has not been investigated., Hypothesis/objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of recombinant canine IFN-γ (rCaIFN-γ) therapy in dogs with CETCL., Animals: Twenty dogs with CETCL recruited from seven veterinary clinics were enrolled in the study., Materials and Methods: Fifteen dogs were treated with rCaIFN-γ, and five control dogs were treated with prednisolone. We evaluated survival time, skin lesions (erythema, nodules, ulcers and bleeding), pruritus and general condition (sleep, appetite and body weight). In the rCaIFN-γ group, a questionnaire regarding the therapy was administered to owners after the dogs died., Results: No significant differences existed in the median survival time between the rCaIFN-γ and control groups (log-rank test: p = 0.2761, Wilcoxon's rank sum test: p = 0.4444). However, there were significant differences in ulcer, bleeding, pruritus, sleep, appetite and body weight between the groups (Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney U-test: p = 0.0023, p = 0.0058, p = 0.0005, p = 0.0191, p = 0.0306 and p = 0.0306, respectively). Two (40%) of five dogs were euthanised in the control group, compared with none in the rCaIFN-γ group. This study aimed to compare the outcomes of microendoscopic cervical foraminotomy (MECF) versus full-endoscopic cervical foraminotomy (FECF) for treating cervical radiculopathy (CR).A retrospective study was performed on patients with CR treated using MECF (n = 35) or FECF (n = 89). A 16-mm tubular retractor and endoscope was used for MECF, while a 4.1-mm working channel endoscope was used for FECF. Patient background and operative data were collected. The numerical rating scale (NRS) and the Neck Disability Index scores were recorded preoperatively and at 1 year postoperatively. Postoperative subjective satisfaction was also assessed.Although the NRS, and NDI scores, as well as postoperative satisfaction at 1 year considerably improved in both groups, one of the background data (number of operated vertebral level) was significantly different. Therefore, we separately analyzed single- and two-level CR. In single-level CR, operation time, intraoperative bleeding, postoperative stay, NDI after 1 year, and reoperation rate were statistically superior in FECF group. In two-level CR, the postoperative stay was statistically superior in FECF group. Three postoperative hematomas were observed in the MECF group, while none was observed in the FECF group.Operative outcomes did not significantly differ between groups. We did not observe postoperative hematoma in FECF even without placement of a postoperative drain. Therefore, we recommend FECF as the first option for the treatment of CR as it has a better safety profile and is minimally invasive.

Cattle-related injuries are a significant contributing factor in 84.3% of livestock-related incidents in Hokkaido Japan. The specific countermeasures to respond to its characteristics are needed because cattle move freely. This study examined the JA Kyosai mutual aid payment claim form data of the agricultural work-related incidents that occurred from 1st January 2013 to 31st December 2016. We extracted incidents coded 'Cattle' term on the 'Causing Stuffs/Animals' column as cattle-related injuries and analysed them. In four years, there were 227 cattle-related incidents and all were non-fatal cases. The most common age group of victims were in their 60s (37.9%). The Therapy duration was 1 to 243 days, with one day being the most common (10.1%); however, in 51.5% of the cases it required more than 30 days. The most common Activity at the moment of the incident was 'bringing the cattle' (22.5%), of which 'leading the cattle by rope' (56.9% of bringing) was most frequently mentioned. Even farmers with significant experience with cattle cannot control cattle proficiently. Neither can they predict cattle behaviour. Hence, cattle should be kept under protected contact. Since prevention of incidents has limits, harm reduction to farmers must be considered. In the short-term planning, isolated pathways and shock-absorbing lead rope are effective in preventing injuries. This study aims to compare the outcomes of interlaminar and transforaminal approaches for full-endoscopic discectomy (FED) for treating L4/5 lumbar disc herniation (LDH).A retrospective study of patients with L4/5 LDH treated with interlaminar endoscopic lumbar discectomy (IELD, n = 19) or transforaminal endoscopic lumbar discectomy (TELD, n = 105) was conducted. Patient background, radiological findings, and operative data were collected. Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) and European Quality of Life-5 Dimension (EQ-5D) scores were recorded preoperatively and 1 and 2 years postoperatively.Although ODI and EQ-5D scores 1 and 2 years postoperatively improved statistically in the IELD and TELD groups, there were no statistical differences between the groups. IELD was predominantly performed in patients who were taller and heavier. The mean operative times and the frequency of laminectomy for IELD and TELD were 67.2 and 44.6 min and 63.2 and 17.1%, respectively (P < 0.001). The radiological findings showed that the concave configuration of the L4 lamina, interlaminar space width, and foraminal width were statistically different between the groups. There were no complications in either of the groups. Reoperation was required for recurrence in two and five patients in the IELD and TELD groups (P = 0.29), respectively.Operative outcomes were identical between the two groups. Although the operative time was longer in the IELD group, both approaches were safely and effectively performed. Depending on the patient's physique and preoperative radiological findings, the more suitable approach for L4/5 LDH should be chosen.

Ants use cuticular hydrocarbon (CHC) as a semiochemical for recognizing their nestmates. For socially parasitic ants, deceiving the CHC is an important survival strategy. Profiling and quantifying CHC is a potent approach to understanding such nestmate discrimination behavior. Thus, a highly efficient, stable, and reproducible extraction method for CHC is essential for this purpose. This paper describes a method for socially parasitic ants to disguise the host species' CHC profile under laboratory conditions, as well as the extraction and measurement of CHC from ants (from a previous study). First, the artificial isotopic substance is applied to the host worker; then, the socially parasitic ant disguises the host-like CHC profile against the above host worker. Next, the CHC is extracted and fractionated from a socially parasitic ant using hexane and silica gel. After concentrating the fractionated product, this product is then used for measurement by gas chromatographymass spectrometry (GC-MS). Background: Posterior cervical foraminotomy against anterior osteophyte is an indirect decompression procedure but less invasive compared to anterior cervical discectomy and fusion. Residual compression to the nerve root may lead to poor surgical outcomes. Although clinical results of posterior cervical foraminotomy for osteophytes are not considered better than those of disk herniation, osteophyte size and the association of the decompression area with poor surgical outcomes remain unclear. This study aimed to identify the limitations of minimally invasive posterior cervical foraminotomy for cervical radiculopathy and discuss the methods to improve surgical outcomes., Methods: We analyzed 55 consecutive patients with degenerative cervical radiculopathy who underwent minimally invasive posterior cervical foraminotomy. Minimum postoperative follow-up duration was 1 year. We divided the patients into nonimproved and improved groups. The cutoff value between preoperative and postoperative Neck Disability Index scores was 30% improvement. Preoperative imaging data comprised disk height, local kyphosis, spinal cord compression, anterior osteophytes in the foramen, and anterior osteophytes of >50% of the intervertebral foramen diameter. Postoperative imaging data comprised craniocaudal length and lateral width of decompressed lamina, preserved superior facet width, and area of decompressed lamina., Results: Fifty-five patients were divided into two groups: nonimproved (n = 19) and improved (n = 36). The presence of osteophytes itself was not significant; however, the presence of osteophytes of >50% of the foramen diameter increased in the nonimproved group (P = 0.004). Mean lateral width and mean area of decompressed lamina after surgery significantly increased in the improved group (P = 0.001, P = 0.03)., Conclusion: The presence of anterior osteophytes >50% of the diameter of the foramen led to poor improvement of clinical outcomes in minimally invasive posterior cervical foraminotomy. Anthropogenic activities' impacts over 140 years were studied at West Nanao Bay using a variety of geochemical techniques on sedimentary records. The bay is influenced by the Ninomiya River which is fed by a small watershed at which Tatzuruhama Town is located. Sedimentation rate was calculated using 210 Pb-excess and 137 Cs activities. C/N decreased after 1975, indicating a decrease in lignin-rich organic matter. From δ 13 C, δ 15 N and biogenic silica it was indicated that the population increased sewage-discharges until the construction of waste-water treatment plant in 1986. Several recorded changes in the landuse matched with the variation of the particle size. Total PAHs concentration was 1.17-62.78 μg g -1 , being highest during Japan's fastest economic growth period (1946-1975). Using diagnostic ratios and PCA analysis, PAHs' sources were identified as pyrogenic for all depths, varying from coal combustion (90.7 %) before 1946 to a mixture of biomass and vehicle combustion after 1961., Competing Interests: Declaration of competing interest The authors declare no conflict of interest., (Copyright © 2023. Introduction: Intermuscular implantations of subcutaneous implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (S-ICD) have been recommended, but the position of the anterior border of the latissimus dorsi muscle (LDM) has not previously been evaluated in establishing an incision line to facilitate the intermuscular approach. The objective of this study is to evalua the position and trend of the anterior border of the LDM in patients who are candidates for implantable cardioverter-defibrillators., Methods: The distance from the back to the anterior border of the LDM (A) and the anterior-posterior width of the chest wall (B) were measured on computed tomography retrospectively, and the ratio (=A/B) was used as the position of the anterior border of the LDM. In addition, the variability and factors affecting the values were evaluated., Results: An analysis was performed on 78 patients, and the position of the anterior border of the LDM (=A/B) exhibited a normal distribution, with a mean value of 0.53 ± 0.062 (0.41-0.69). The position of the anterior border of the LDM tended to be more anterior in younger, taller, male, primary prevention, nonheart failure, low brain natriuretic peptide level, and nondiabetic patients., Conclusion: The position of the anterior border of the LDM varied from case to case with variable results. Despite the increase in age-related hearing loss (ARHL) prevalence owing to increased population aging, preventive measures against ARHL have not yet been established. The immune system becomes one of the most dysfunctional systems upon aging, and immunosenescence greatly affects homeostasis and promotes systemic aging along with chronic inflammation and oxidative stress. This study aimed to determine whether immuno-rejuvenation procedures can prevent ARHL and have clinical applications as well as to analyze the communication mechanisms between the systemic immune system and the cochlea using a murine model. Lymphocytes from young mice inhibited the progression of ARHL. The method of cryopreserving these lymphocytes and inoculating them at the onset of ARHL suggests their clinical application. Mice that were administered this treatment not only maintained auditory threshold but also avoided spinal ganglion degeneration, cellular immune aging, and nitric oxide production, which causes age-related tissue damage. These findings coincide with our previous strategies against immunosenescence and neuronal aging. Therefore, the manipulation of systemic immune function may contribute not only to the prevention of ARHL but also to the development of novel anti-aging clinical measures, paving the way to healthy longevity with preserved organ function., Competing Interests: Declaration of competing interest None., (Copyright © 2023 The Authors.
