The demand for natural medicines has increased because of their limited adverse effects. The aim of study is to explore the antidiabetic potential of isolated steroidal alkaloid from Sarcococca saligna in streptozotocin induced diabetic rats. To determine the antidiabetic activity of steroidal alkaloids, diabetes was induced in rats by injecting streptozotocin intraperitoneally at a dose of 40 mg/Kg. After a week of STZ injection the treatment were started and the 8th day was considered as the 1st day of treatment and up to four weeks the rats were treated with steroidal alkaloids. Animals were divided into five groups, group 1 considered as a control group by receiving normal saline (1 ml/Kg) twice daily and group 2, 3, 4 were treated with active compound sarcovagine-D, saracodine and holaphylline at the dose of 5 mg/Kg subcutaneously twice a day while group 5 was treated with a standard drug glibenclamide at a dose of 1 mg/Kg/day. The result showed that treated group 2 and 4 reduced the glucose level in blood significantly while group 3 showed moderate glucose reduction. The fructosamine level reduced significantly in treating group 4 from the 2nd week of treatment while group 2 and 3 decreased the level significantly in week 4 in diabetic rats. The treated groups showed gradual decreases the glucose level in 1st and 2nd week of oral glucose tolerance test compared to control group. The group receiving holaphylline (4) and sarcovagine-D (2) showed good improvements in blood lipids while the effect of compound on body weight showed less significant improvement. The present study concluded that steroid alkaloids from isolated Sarcococca saligna possess hypoglycemic effect and improve others diabetes associated complications. Together these finding further research is needed using a range of doses to explore the other possible beneficial effects in diabetes mellitus and its molecular mechanism., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Masson SAS. Objective: To determine the mean age of fusion of medial end of clavicle by radiography., Study Design: Cross-sectional study., Place and Duration of Study: Departments of Forensic Medicine, Dow Medical College and Ziauddin University, Karachi, from June 2010 to May 2011., Methodology: The subjects for this study were selected from various government colleges of Karachi. The subjects were analyzed for age and further confirmation was done by interviews where birth records and other physical parameters of age were also assessed. X-rays chest PA view was taken focusing on the medial end of clavicle; and were examined by a consultant radiologist and complete fusion of the medial end was noted. P-value less than 0.05 was considered significant., Results: The mean age of fusion of medial end of the clavicle was found to be 21 ±1.43 years. Significant difference was observed in male to female age of fusion 21.14 ±1.41 years versus 20.65 ±1.94 years (p > 0.05). Similarly, statistically significant differences were observed between lower to middle income class and higher income class of all society. No difference was observed among various ethnic groups., Conclusion: Socio-economic factors, such as diet and nutrition, directly affect bone growth and hence bones' age. The results of fusion of the medial end of the clavicle are not affected by ethnicity; however, it is significantly affected by gender. More studies should be conducted in various parts of the country to make a natural standard in setting up uniform criteria for assessing age at or above 21 years.

Background: Homicide is one ofthe oldest crimes in human civilization. For every person who dies as a result of homicide, many more are injured. A study of the patterns of homicide in a society is one of the first steps in developing strategies to prevent it. This study was conducted at the department of Forensic Medicine Khyber Medical College, Peshawar, to know the patterns of homicide, taking it as the first step in the prevention of this crime., Methods: This study includes 520 cases of homicide out of the total of 662 medico-legal autopsies conducted at Khyber Medical College, Peshawar, during the year 2002. The cases have been labeled as homicide on the basis of autopsy and police inquest., Results: The homicide rate for Peshawar during the period under study was 22.9/100,000. Males constituted 86.15% ofthe victims. 32% of the victims were in their third decade of life. Firearms were the causative agent in 86% of the cases. Chest was the primarily targeted area of the body. The highest number of homicides occurred in the month of November., Conclusions: The homicide rate is alarmingly high in Peshawar as is the use of firearms. This is something that should be seriously looked at by the policy makers.

Objective: The aim of the study was to know the extent of violent deaths among females in Peshawar, the most vulnerable age group, weapons of infliction and the mode of death., Design: Non interventional (descriptive) type study., Place and Duration of Study: This study was conducted from 1st January, 2001 to 31st December, 2001 in the Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology, Khyber Medical College, Peshawar., Subjects and Methods: Out of 679 deaths, presented for autopsy at the Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology, Khyber Medical College, Peshawar 89 were females. These were grouped according to age, mode of death and weapons of infliction., Results: Females formed 13% of all the autopsies done in Peshawar. The age group most commonly involved was 21-40 years (50.56%). Firearms were the predominant weapons of infliction (70.78%) and the intent was mostly homicidal (77.52%)., Conclusion: Fatal violence against women is uncommon in Peshawar. Suicide is rare. Young women are mostly killed by firearms.
