Two sets of short amplicon binary markers (SABs): 50 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and 38 insertion/deletion polymorphisms (Indels) were used to genotype bones of 35 years "post-mortem". Typing results of these binary markers were compared with those obtained for standard commercial STR and mini-STR DNA typing kits. We observed SAB marker performance to be better compared with conventional STR and mini-STR genotyping in degraded bone sample analysis. Furthermore, additional genetic information provided by these 88 binary markers, 50 SNPs and 38 Indels, combined with classical markers gave very high discrimination power even in severely degraded specimens, with all tested bone samples showing Random Match Probabilities (RMPs) higher than 1019. Missing person and disaster victim identification by kinship analysis is considerably strengthened by the addition of SAB markers since they can be successfully typed on degraded bone samples while adding considerable extra genetic data when poor or incomplete information is available from conventional forensic markers for the analysis of family pedigrees., (Copyright © 2011 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. To investigate the male genetic legacy of the Arab rule in southern Europe during medieval times, we focused on specific Northwest African haplogroups and identified evolutionary close STR-defined haplotypes in Iberia, Sicily and the Italian peninsula. Our results point to a higher recent Northwest African contribution in Iberia and Sicily in agreement with historical data. southern Italian regions known to have experienced long-term Arab presence also show an enrichment of Northwest African types. The forensic and genomic implications of these findings are discussed.

For several years Y-chromosomal microsatellites (short tandem repeats, STRs) have been well established in forensic practice. In this context, the genetic characteristics of the Y chromosome (i.e. its paternal inheritance and lack of recombination) render STRs particularly powerful. However, genetic differences between male populations appear to be larger for Y-STRs than for autosomal STRs, a fact that is most likely due to the higher sensitivity of Y-chromosomal lineages to genetic drift (Forensic Sci Int 118 (2001) 153). The assessment of probabilities for matches between haplotyped male persons or traces/persons requires the typing of a large number of haplotypes in the appropriate reference populations. The haplotype data of a large number of European as well as South and North American populations have been collected and are continuously published online (Y-STR Haplotype Reference Database--YHRD; http://www.ystr.org). The most recent multicentric effort has led to the establishment of an Asian YHRD (http://www.ystr.org/asia) which has been available since January 2002. All databases are maintained and curated at the Institute of Legal Medicine, Humboldt-University, Berlin and will soon be fused to a global repository including populations from all continents.

The Accessory Axillary Vein (AAV) was studied in 60 axillae of adult cadavers after fixation in 10% formaldehyde solution. The AAV had an incidence of 56.7% originating in 55.9% from the lateral brachial vein, in 32.4% from the common brachial and in 11.8% from the deep brachial vein. After running upward laterally to the axillary artery and the brachial plexus it ended usually (79.4%) in the suprapectoral portion of the AV. The tributaries of the AAV are the circumflex humeral and muscular veins and rarely the thoraco-acromial and the cephalic veins. The AAV can replace the AV in cases of obliteration of the latter.
