Background: This study aimed to analyze the trends of Parkinson's disease (PD) mortality rates among Chinese residents from 2004 to 2021, provide evidence for the formulation of PD prevention and control strategies to improve the quality of life among PD residents., Methods: Demographic and sociological data such as gender, urban or rural residency and age were obtained from the National Cause of Death Surveillance Dataset from 2004 to 2021. We then analyzed the trends of PD mortality rates by Joinpoint regression., Results: The PD mortality and standardized mortality rates in China showed an overall increasing trend during 2004-2021 (average annual percentage change [AAPC] = 7.14%, AAPC ASMR =3.21%, P < 0.001). The mortality and standardized mortality rate in male (AAPC = 7.65%, AAPC ASMR =3.18%, P < 0.001) were higher than that of female (AAPC = 7.03%, AAPC ASMR =3.09%, P < 0.001). The PD standardized mortality rates of urban (AAPC = 5.13%, AAPC ASMR =1.76%, P < 0.001) and rural (AAPC = 8.40%, AAPC ASMR =4.29%, P < 0.001) residents both increased gradually. In the age analysis, the mortality rate increased with age. And the mortality rates of those aged > 85 years was the highest. Considering gender, female aged > 85 years had the fastest mortality trend (annual percentage change [APC] = 5.69%, P < 0.001). Considering urban/rural, rural aged 80-84 years had the fastest mortality trend (APC = 6.68%, P < 0.001)., Conclusions: The mortality rate of PD among Chinese residents increased from 2004 to 2021. Male sex, urban residence and age > 85 years were risk factors for PD-related death and should be the primary focus for PD prevention., (© 2024. The Author(s).)

Bioelectronic medicine uses electrical stimulation of the nervous system to improve health outcomes throughout the body primarily by regulating immune responses. This concept, however, has yet to be applied systematically to the auditory system. There is growing interest in how cochlear damage and associated neuroinflammation may contribute to hearing loss. In conjunction with recent findings, we propose here a new perspective, which could be applied alongside advancing technologies, to use auditory nerve (AN) stimulation to modulate immune responses in hearing health disorders and following surgeries for auditory implants. In this article we will: (1) review the mechanisms of inflammation in the auditory system in relation to various forms of hearing loss, (2) explore nerve stimulation to reduce inflammation throughout the body and how similar neural-immune circuits likely exist in the auditory system (3) summarize current methods for stimulating the auditory system, particularly the AN, and (4) propose future directions to use bioelectronic medicine to ameliorate harmful immune responses in the inner ear and auditory brainstem to treat refractory conditions. We will illustrate how current knowledge from bioelectronic medicine can be applied to AN stimulation to resolve inflammation associated with implantation and disease. Further, we suggest the necessary steps to get discoveries in this emerging field from bench to bedside. Denitrification in river sediments is the hotspot of nitrogen removal and nosZI gene is essential for reducing nitrous oxide (N 2 O) emissions. However, few studies tried to link nosZI communities with variations of denitrification rates in sediments along the high-elevation rivers. Here, we investigated the spatial variation of potential denitrification rates of sediments along a section (hereafter YJ) of the middle reaches of the Yarlung Zangbo River in the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. We also used the real-time quantitative PCR (qPCR) and high-throughput sequencing techniques to evaluate the abundance and composition of nosZI-containing microbial groups. The influences of physicochemical factors and denitrifier communities on potential denitrification rates were further revealed through structural equation modeling. The obtained results indicated that potential denitrification rates and N 2 O/(N 2 O + N 2 ) ratio in the sediments along YJ section were greatly different. Moreover, the alpha diversity and composition of nosZI-containing microbial community in river sediments differed remarkably, mainly driven by the ammonia nitrogen (NH 4 + -N), organic matter (OM) and pH in sediments. The relative abundances of Zoogloeaceae, Oxalobacteraceae, Rhodospirillaceae and Bradyrhizobiaceae significantly differed among five groups (P < 0.05). Structural equation modeling further suggested that nitrogen nutrients directly influenced the potential denitrification rates, while total phosphorus (TP) showed indirect effects on potential denitrification rates through modulating denitrifier abundances and nosZI community. The abundance and composition of nosZI community were powerful predictors in regulating denitrification rates and N 2 O/(N 2 O + N 2 ) ratio.
