Due to the sulfur's atoms' propensity to form molecules and/or polymeric chains of various sizes and configuration, elemental sulfur possesses more allotropes and polymorphs than any other element at ambient conditions. This variability of the starting building blocks is partially responsible for its rich and fascinating phase diagram, with pressure and temperature changing the states of sulfur from insulating molecular rings and chains to semiconducting low- and high-density amorphous configurations to incommensurate superconducting metallic atomic phase. Here, using a fast compression technique, we demonstrate that the rapid pressurisation of liquid sulfur can effectively break the molecular ring structure, forming a glassy polymeric state of pure-chain molecules (Am-S P ). This solid disordered chain state appears to be (meta)stable in the P-T region usually associated with phase I made up of S 8 . The elemental sulfur glass, made up from one of the simplest building blocks, offers a unique prospect to study the structure and property relationships of various other phases of sulfur and their interactions. The Na-W-H and Na-Re-H ternary systems were studied in a diamond anvil cell through X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy, supported by density functional theory and molecular dynamics calculations. Na 3 WH 9 can be synthesized above 7.8 GPa and 1400 K, remaining stable between at least 0.1 and 42.1 GPa. The rhenium analogue Na 3 ReH 8 can form at 10.1 GPa upon laser heating, being stable between at least 0.3 and 32.5 GPa. Na 3 WH 9 and Na 3 ReH 8 host [WH 9 ] 3- and [ReH 8 ] 3- anions, respectively, forming homoleptic 18-electron complexes in both cases. Both ternary hydrides show similar structural types and pressure dependent phase transitions. At the highest pressures they adopt a distorted fcc Heusler structure (Na 3 WH 9 -II' and Na 3 ReH 8 -II') while upon decompression the structure symmetrizes becoming fcc between ∼6.4 and 10 GPa for Na 3 WH 9 -II and at 17 GPa for Na 3 ReH 8 -II. On further pressure release, the fcc phases transform into variants of a (quasi-) hexagonal structure at ∼3 GPa, Na 3 WH 9 -I and Na 3 ReH 8 -I.

Solid nitrogen exhibits a panoply of phenomena ranging from complex molecular crystalline configurations to polymerization and closing band gap at higher densities. Among the elemental molecular solids, nitrogen stands apart for having phases, which can only be stabilized following particular pressure-temperature pathways, indicative of metastability and kinetic barriers. Here, through the combination of Raman spectroscopy and dynamic compression techniques, we find that the appearance of the whole nitrogen phase diagram is determined by the P-T paths taken below 2 GPa. We reveal the existence of the path- and phase-dependent triple point between the β - N 2 , δ loc - N 2 and γ - or ϵ - N 2 . We further show that the β - N 2 towards γ - N 2 path below the triple point, that evades δ ( δ loc )- N 2 , results in the formation of γ - N 2 , which in turn becomes a dominant phase. We then demonstrate, that the β - N 2 through δ ( δ loc )- N 2 above the triple point path leads to the formation of ϵ - N 2 and the "well-established" phase diagram. An additional pathway, which by-passes the rotationally inhibited modifications δ ( δ loc )- N 2 , via rapid compression is found to produce γ - N 2 at higher temperatures. We argue that the pathway and phase sensitive triple point and the compression rate dependent phase formation challenge our understanding of this archetypal dense molecular solid., (© 2024. Using optical spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and electrical transport measurements, we have studied the pressure-induced metallization in BaH 2 and Ba 8 H 46 . Our combined measurements suggest a structural phase transition from BaH 2 -II to BaH 2 -III accompanied by band gap closure and transformation to a metallic state at 57 GPa. The metallization is confirmed by resistance measurements as a function of the pressure and temperature. We also confirm that, with further hydrogenation, BaH 2 forms the previously observed Weaire-Phelan Ba 8 H 46 , synthesized at 45 GPa and 1200 K. In this compound, metallization pressure is shifted to 85 GPa. Through a comparison of the properties of these two compounds, a question is raised about the importance of the hydrogen content in the electronic properties of hydride systems.

The binary Xe-Ar system has been studied in a series of high pressure diamond anvil cell experiments up to 60 GPa at 300 K. In-situ x-ray powder diffraction and Raman spectroscopy indicate the formation of a van der Waals compound, XeAr2, at above 3.5 GPa. Powder x-ray diffraction analysis demonstrates that XeAr2 adopts a Laves MgZn2-type structure with space group P63/mmc and cell parameters a = 6.595 Å and c = 10.716 Å at 4 GPa. Density functional theory calculations support the structure determination, with agreement between experimental and calculated Raman spectra. Pressure-induced magnetic phase transitions are attracting interest as a means to detect superconducting behaviour at high pressures in diamond anvil cells, but determining the local magnetic properties of samples is a challenge due to the small volumes of sample chambers. Optically detected magnetic resonance of nitrogen vacancy centres in diamond has recently been used for the in situ detection of pressure-induced phase transitions. However, owing to their four orientation axes and temperature-dependent zero-field splitting, interpreting these optically detected magnetic resonance spectra remains challenging. Here we study the optical and spin properties of implanted silicon vacancy defects in 4H-silicon carbide that exhibit single-axis and temperature-independent zero-field splitting. Using this technique, we observe the magnetic phase transition of Nd 2 Fe 14 B at about 7 GPa and map the critical temperature-pressure phase diagram of the superconductor YBa 2 Cu 3 O 6.6 . Spin defects in silicon carbide appear to be a promising tool for various quantum technologies, especially for quantum sensing. However, this technique has been used only at ambient pressure until now. Here, by combining this technique with diamond anvil cell, we systematically study the optical and spin properties of divacancy defects created at the surface of SiC at pressures up to 40 GPa. The zero-field-splitting of the divacancy spins increases linearly with pressure with a slope of 25.1 MHz/GPa, which is almost two-times larger than that of nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond. The corresponding pressure sensing sensitivity is about 0.28 MPa/Hz -1/2 . The coherent control of divacancy demonstrates that coherence time decreases as pressure increases. Based on these, the pressure-induced magnetic phase transition of Nd 2 Fe 14 B sample at high pressures was detected. These experiments pave the way to use divacancy in quantum technologies such as pressure sensing and magnetic detection at high pressures.

Through a series of high pressure diamond anvil experiments, we report the synthesis of alkaline earth (Ca, Sr, Ba) tetrahydrides, and investigate their properties through Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and density functional theory calculations. The tetrahydrides incorporate both atomic and quasi-molecular hydrogen, and we find that the frequency of the intramolecular stretching mode of the H 2 δ - units downshifts from Ca to Sr and to Ba upon compression. The experimental results indicate that the larger the host cation, the longer the H 2 δ - bond. Analysis of the electron localization function (ELF) demonstrates that the lengthening of the H-H bond is caused by the charge transfer from the metal to H 2 δ - and by the steric effect of the metal host on the H-H bond. This effect is most prominent for BaH 4 , where the precompression of H 2 δ - units at 50 GPa results in bond lengths comparable to that of pure H 2 above 275 GPa.

There is an ever increasing interest in studying dynamic-pressure dependent phenomena utilizing dynamic Diamond Anvil Cells (dDACs), devices capable of a highly controlled rate of compression. Here, we characterize and compare the compression rate of dDACs in which the compression is actuated via three different methods: (1) stepper motor (S-dDAC), (2) gas membrane (M-dDAC), and (3) piezoactuator (P-dDAC). The compression rates of these different types of dDAC were determined solely on millisecond time-resolved R 1 -line fluorescence of a ruby sphere located within the sample chamber. Furthermore, these different dynamic compression-techniques have been described and characterized over a broad temperature and pressure range from 10 to 300 K and 0-50 GPa. At room temperature, piezoactuation (P-dDAC) has a clear advantage in controlled extremely fast compression, having recorded a compression rate of ∼7 TPa/s, which is also found to be primarily influenced by the charging time of the piezostack. At 40-250 K, gas membranes (M-dDAC) have also been found to generate rapid compression of ∼0.5-3 TPa/s and are readily interfaced with moderate cryogenic and ultrahigh vacuum conditions. Approaching more extreme cryogenic conditions (<10 K), a stepper motor driven lever arm (S-dDAC) offers a solution for high-precision moderate compression rates in a regime where P-dDACs and M-dDACs can become difficult to incorporate. The results of this paper demonstrate the applicability of different dynamic compression techniques, and when applied, they can offer us new insights into matter's response to strain, which is highly relevant to physics, geoscience, and chemistry.

Through a series of x-ray diffraction, optical spectroscopy diamond anvil cell experiments, combined with density functional theory calculations, we explore the dense CH&#95;{4}-H&#95;{2} system. We find that pressures as low as 4.8 GPa can stabilize CH&#95;{4}(H&#95;{2})&#95;{2} and (CH&#95;{4})&#95;{2}H&#95;{2}, with the latter exhibiting extreme hardening of the intramolecular vibrational mode of H&#95;{2} units within the structure. On further compression, a unique structural composition, (CH&#95;{4})&#95;{3}(H&#95;{2})&#95;{25}, emerges. This novel structure holds a vast amount of molecular hydrogen and represents the first compound to surpass 50 wt % H&#95;{2}. These compounds, stabilized by nuclear quantum effects, persist over a broad pressure regime, exceeding 160 GPa.

Diamond and graphite are fundamental sources of carbon in the upper mantle, and their reactivity with H 2 -rich fluids present at these depths may represent the key to unravelling deep abiotic hydrocarbon formation. We demonstrate an unexpected high reactivity between carbons' most common allotropes, diamond and graphite, with hydrogen at conditions comparable with those in the Earth's upper mantle along subduction zone thermal gradients. Between 0.5-3 GPa and at temperatures as low as 300 °C, carbon reacts readily with H 2 yielding methane (CH 4 ), whilst at higher temperatures (500 °C and above), additional light hydrocarbons such as ethane (C 2 H 6 ) emerge. These results suggest that the interaction between deep H 2 -rich fluids and reduced carbon minerals may be an efficient mechanism for producing abiotic hydrocarbons at the upper mantle., (© 2021. Hydrogen bond networks play a crucial role in biomolecules and molecular materials such as ices. How these networks react to pressure directs their properties at extreme conditions. We have studied one of the simplest hydrogen bond formers, hydrogen chloride, from crystallization to metallization, covering a pressure range of more than 2.5 million atmospheres. Following hydrogen bond symmetrization, we identify a previously unknown phase by the appearance of new Raman modes and changes to x-ray diffraction patterns that contradict previous predictions. On further compression, a broad Raman band supersedes the well-defined excitations of phase V, despite retaining a crystalline chlorine substructure. We propose that this mode has its origin in proton (H + ) mobility and disorder. Above 100 GPa, the optical bandgap closes linearly with extrapolated metallization at 240(10) GPa. Our findings suggest that proton dynamics can drive changes in these networks even at very high densities.

Carbon disulfide is an archetypal double-bonded molecule belonging to the class of group IV-group VI, AB 2 compounds. It is widely believed that, upon compression to several GPa at room temperature and above, a polymeric chain of type (-(C═S)-S-) n , named Bridgman's black polymer, will form. By combining optical spectroscopy and synchrotron X-ray diffraction data with ab initio simulations, we demonstrate that the structure of this polymer is different. Solid molecular CS 2 polymerizes at ∼10-11 GPa. The polymer is disordered and consists of a mixture of 3-fold (C3) and 4-fold (C4) coordinated carbon atoms with some C═C double bonds. The C4/C3 ratio continuously increases upon further compression to 40 GPa. Upon decompression, structural changes are partially reverted, while the sample also undergoes partial disproportionation. Our work uncovers the nontrivial high-pressure structural evolution in one of the simplest molecular systems exhibiting molecular as well as polymeric phases.

The chalcogens are known to react with one another to form interchalcogens, which exhibit a diverse range of bonding and conductive behavior due to the difference in electronegativity between the group members. Through a series of high-pressure diamond anvil experiments combined with density functional theory calculations, we report the synthesis of an S-Se hydride. At pressures above 4 GPa we observe the formation of a single solid composed of both H 2 Se and H 2 S molecular units. Further compression in a hydrogen medium leads to the formation of an alloyed compound (H 2 S x Se 1- x ) 2 H 2 , after which there is a sequence of pressure-induced phase transitions associated with the arrested rotation of molecules. At pressures above 50 GPa, there is a symmetrization of hydrogen bonds concomitantly with a closing band gap and increased reflectivity of the compound, indicative of a transition to a metallic state.

By combining pressures up to 50 GPa and temperatures of 1200 K, we synthesize the novel barium hydride, Ba 8 H 46 , stable down to 27 GPa. We use Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and first-principles calculations to determine that this compound adopts a highly symmetric P m 3 ¯ n structure with an unusual 5 3 4 :1 hydrogen-to-barium ratio. This singular stoichiometry corresponds to the well-defined type-I clathrate geometry. This clathrate consists of a Weaire-Phelan hydrogen structure with the barium atoms forming a topologically close-packed phase. In particular, the structure is formed by H 20 and H 24 clathrate cages showing substantially weakened H-H interactions. Density functional theory (DFT) demonstrates that cubic P m 3 ¯ n Ba 8 H 46 requires dynamical effects to stabilize the H 20 and H 24 clathrate cages.

Through a series of high-pressure x-ray diffraction experiments combined with in situ laser heating, we explore the pressure-temperature phase diagram of germanium (Ge) at pressures up to 110 GPa and temperatures exceeding 3000 K. In the pressure range of 64-90 GPa, we observe orthorhombic Ge-IV transforming above 1500 K to a previously unobserved high-temperature phase, which we denote as Ge-VIII. This high-temperature phase is characterized by a tetragonal crystal structure, space group I4/mmm. Density functional theory simulations confirm that Ge-IV becomes unstable at high temperatures and that Ge-VIII is highly competitive and dynamically stable at these conditions. The existence of Ge-VIII has profound implications for the pressure-temperature phase diagram, with melting conditions increasing to much higher temperatures than previous extrapolations would imply.

Our combined high-pressure synchrotron X-ray diffraction and Monte Carlo modeling studies show super-filling of the zeolite, and computational results suggest an occupancy by a maximum of nearly two inserted H 2 molecules per framework unit, which is about twice that observed in gas hydrates. Super-filling prevents amorphization of the host material up to at least 60 GPa, which is a record pressure for zeolites and also for any group IV element being in full 4-fold coordination, except for carbon. We find that the inserted H 2 forms an exotic topologically constrained glassy-like form, otherwise unattainable in pure hydrogen. Raman spectroscopy on confined H 2 shows that the microporosity of the zeolite is retained over the entire investigated pressure range (up to 80 GPa) and that intermolecular interactions share common aspects with bulk hydrogen, while they are also affected by the zeolite framework., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing financial interest., (© 2021 American Chemical Society.)

Mixtures of ammonia and water are major components of the "hot ice" mantle regions of icy planets. The ammonia-rich ammonia hemihydrate (AHH) plays a pivotal role as it precipitates from water-rich mixtures under pressure. It has been predicted to form ionic high-pressure structures, with fully disintegrated water molecules. Utilizing Raman spectroscopy measurements up to 123 GPa and first-principles calculations, we report the spontaneous ionization of AHH under compression. Spectroscopic measurements reveal that molecular AHH begins to transform into an ionic state at 26 GPa and then above ∼69  GPa transforms into the fully ionic P3[over ¯]m1 phase, AHH-III, characterized as ammonium oxide (NH&#95;{4}^{+})&#95;{2}O^{2-}.

Raman spectroscopy demonstrates that the rotational spectrum of solid hydrogen, and its isotope deuterium, undergoes profound transformations upon compression while still remaining in phase I. We show that these changes are associated with a loss of quantum character in the rotational modes and that the angular momentum J gradually ceases to be a good quantum rotational number. Through isotopic comparisons of the rotational Raman contributions, we reveal that hydrogen and deuterium evolve from a quantum rotor to a harmonic oscillator. We find that the mechanics behind this transformation can be well-described by a quantum-mechanical single inhibited rotor, accurately reproducing the striking spectroscopic changes observed in phase I.

The Co-H system has been investigated through high-pressure, high-temperature X-ray diffraction experiments combined with first-principles calculations. On compression of elemental cobalt in a hydrogen medium, we observe face-centered cubic cobalt hydride (CoH) and cobalt dihydride (CoH 2 ) above 33 GPa. Laser heating CoH 2 in a hydrogen matrix at 75 GPa to temperatures in excess of ∼800 K produces cobalt trihydride (CoH 3 ) which adopts a primitive structure. Density functional theory calculations support the stability of CoH 3 . This phase is predicted to be thermodynamically stable at pressures above 18 GPa and to be a superconductor below 23 K. Theory predicts that this phase remains dynamically stable upon decompression above 11 GPa where it has a maximum T c of 30 K.

Molecular hydrogen forms the archetypical quantum solid. Its quantum nature is revealed by behavior which is classically impossible and by very strong isotope effects. Isotope effects between [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], and HD molecules come from mass difference and the different quantum exchange effects: fermionic [Formula: see text] molecules have antisymmetric wavefunctions, while bosonic [Formula: see text] molecules have symmetric wavefunctions, and HD molecules have no exchange symmetry. To investigate how the phase diagram depends on quantum-nuclear effects, we use high-pressure and low-temperature in situ Raman spectroscopy to map out the phase diagrams of [Formula: see text]-HD-[Formula: see text] with various isotope concentrations over a wide pressure-temperature ( P - T ) range. We find that mixtures of [Formula: see text], HD, and [Formula: see text] behave as an isotopic molecular alloy (ideal solution) and exhibit symmetry-breaking phase transitions between phases I and II and phase III. Surprisingly, all transitions occur at higher pressures for the alloys than either pure [Formula: see text] or [Formula: see text] This runs counter to any quantum effects based on isotope mass but can be explained by quantum trapping of high-kinetic energy states by the exchange interaction., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing interest.

When compressed in a matrix of solid hydrogen, many metals form compounds with increasingly high hydrogen contents. At high density, hydrogenic sublattices can emerge, which may act as low-dimensional analogues of atomic hydrogen. We show that at high pressures and temperatures, ruthenium forms polyhydride species that exhibit intriguing hydrogen substructures with counterintuitive electronic properties. Ru 3 H 8 is synthesized from RuH in H 2 at 50 GPa and at temperatures in excess of 1000 K, adopting a cubic structure with short H-H distances. When synthesis pressures are increased above 85 GPa, we observe RuH 4 which crystallizes in a remarkable structure containing corner-sharing H 6 octahedra. Calculations indicate this phase is semimetallic at 100 GPa.

We report here the pressure-induced amorphization and reversible structural transformation between two amorphous forms of SO 2 : molecular amorphous and polymeric amorphous, with the transition found at 26 GPa over a broad temperature regime, 77 K to 300 K. The transformation was observed by both Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction in a diamond anvil cell. The results were corroborated by ab initio molecular dynamics simulations, where both forward and reverse transitions were detected, opening a window to detailed analysis of the respective local structures. The high-pressure polymeric amorphous form was found to consist mainly of disordered polymeric chains made of three-coordinated sulfur atoms connected via oxygen atoms, with few residual intact molecules. Single crystals of the high-pressure phases II and III of pyridine have been obtained by in situ crystallization at 1.09 and 1.69 GPa, revealing the crystal structure of phase III for the first time using X-ray diffraction. Phase II crystallizes in P 2 1 2 1 2 1 with Z ' = 1 and phase III in P 4 1 2 1 2 with Z ' = ½. Neutron powder diffraction experiments using pyridine-d 5 establish approximate equations of state of both phases. The space group and unit-cell dimensions of phase III are similar to the structures of other simple compounds with C 2v molecular symmetry, and the phase becomes stable at high pressure because it is topologically close-packed, resulting in a lower molar volume than the topologically body-centred cubic phase II. Phases II and III have been observed previously by Raman spectroscopy, but have been mis-identified or inconsistently named. Raman spectra collected on the same samples as used in the X-ray experiments establish the vibrational characteristics of both phases unambiguously. The pyridine molecules interact in both phases through CH⋯π and CH⋯N interactions. The nature of individual contacts is preserved through the phase transition between phases III and II, which occurs on decompression. Calcium carbonate is a relevant constituent of the Earth's crust that is transferred into the deep Earth through the subduction process. Its chemical interaction with calcium-rich silicates at high temperatures give rise to the formation of mixed silicate-carbonate minerals, but the structural behavior of these phases under compression is not known. Here we report the existence of a dense polymorph of Ca 5 (Si 2 O 7 )(CO 3 ) 2 tilleyite above 8 GPa. We have structurally characterized the two phases at high pressures and temperatures, determined their equations of state and analyzed the evolution of the polyhedral units under compression. This has been possible thanks to the agreement between our powder and single-crystal XRD experiments, Raman spectroscopy measurements and ab-initio simulations. The presence of multiple cation sites, with variable volume and coordination number (6-9) and different polyhedral compressibilities, together with the observation of significant amounts of alumina in compositions of some natural tilleyite assemblages, suggests that post-tilleyite structure has the potential to accommodate cations with different sizes and valencies.

Diatomic elemental solids are highly compressible due to the weak interactions between molecules. However, as the density increases the intra- and intermolecular distances become comparable, leading to a range of phenomena, such as structural transformation, molecular dissociation, amorphization, and metallisation. Here we report, following the crystallization of chlorine at 1.15(30) GPa into an ordered orthorhombic structure (oC8), the existence of a mixed-molecular structure (mC8, 130(10)-241(10) GPa) and the concomitant observation of a continuous band gap closure, indicative of a transformation into a metallic molecular form around 200(10) GPa. The onset of dissociation of chlorine is identified by the observation of the incommensurate structure (i-oF4) above 200(10) GPa, before finally adopting a monatomic form (oI2) above 256(10) GPa.

Transition-metal nitrides have applications in a range of technological fields. Recent experiments have shown that new nitrogen-bearing compounds can be accessed through a combination of high temperatures and pressures, revealing a richer chemistry than was previously assumed. Here, we show that at pressures above 50 GPa and temperatures greater than 1500 K  elemental copper reacts with nitrogen, forming copper diazenide (CuN 2 ). Through a combination of synchrotron X-ray diffraction and first-principles calculations we have explored the stability and electronic structure of CuN 2 . We find that the novel compound remains stable down to 25 GPa before decomposing to its constituent elements. Electronic structure calculations show that CuN 2 is metallic and exhibits partially filled N 2 antibonding orbitals, leading to an ambiguous electronic structure between Cu + /Cu 2+ . This leads to weak Cu-N bonds and the lowest bulk modulus observed for any transition-metal nitride.

Nitrogen exhibits an exceptional polymorphism under extreme conditions, making it unique amongst the elemental diatomics and a valuable testing system for experiment-theory comparison. Despite attracting considerable attention, the structures of many high-pressure nitrogen phases still require unambiguous determination. Here, we report the structure of the elusive high-pressure high-temperature polymorph ι-N 2 at 56 GPa and ambient temperature, determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction, and investigate its properties using ab initio simulations. We find that ι-N 2 is characterised by an extraordinarily large unit cell containing 48 N 2 molecules. Geometry optimisation favours the experimentally determined structure and density functional theory calculations find ι-N 2 to have the lowest enthalpy of the molecular nitrogen polymorphs that exist between 30 and 60 GPa. The results demonstrate that very complex structures, similar to those previously only observed in metallic elements, can become energetically favourable in molecular systems at extreme pressures and temperatures.

Through a series of Raman spectroscopy studies, we investigate the behavior of hydrogen-helium and hydrogen-nitrogen mixtures at high pressure across a wide range of concentrations. We find that there is no evidence of chemical association or increased miscibility of hydrogen and helium in the solid state up to pressures of 250 GPa at 300 K. In contrast, we observe the formation of concentration-dependent N&#95;{2}-H&#95;{2} van der Waals solids, which react to form N-H bonded compounds above 50 GPa. Through this combined study, we can demonstrate that the recently reported chemical association of H&#95;{2}-He can be attributed to significant N&#95;{2} contamination and subsequent formation of N&#95;{2}-H&#95;{2} compounds.

Intermetallic lithium compounds have found a wide range of applications owing to their light mass and desirable electronic and mechanical properties. Here, by compressing pure lithium and zinc mixtures in a diamond-anvil cell, we observe a direct reaction forming the stoichiometric compound LiZn, at pressures below 1 GPa. On further compression above 10 GPa, we observe the formation of Li 2 Zn, which is the highest lithium content compound to be discovered in the Li-Zn system. Our results constrain the structures of these compounds and their evolution with pressure, furthering our understanding of potentially useful light volume-efficient energy storage materials.

A new phase V of hydrogen was recently claimed in experiments above 325 GPa and 300 K. Because of the extremely small sample size at such record pressures the measurements were limited to Raman spectroscopy. The experimental data on increase of pressure show decreasing Raman activity and darkening of the sample, which suggests band gap closure and impending molecular dissociation, but no definite conclusions could be reached. Furthermore, the available data are insufficient to determine the structure of phase V, which remains unknown. Introducing saddle-point ab initio random structure searching, we find several new structural candidates of hydrogen which could describe the observed properties of phase V. We investigate hydrogen metallization in the proposed candidate structures, and demonstrate that smaller band gaps are associated with longer bond lengths. We conclude that phase V is a stepping stone towards metallization.

High pressure can profoundly affect the electronic structure and reactivity, creating compounds between elements that do not react at ambient conditions. Lithium is known to react with gold and silver; however, no copper compounds are known to date. By compressing mixtures of the elements in diamond-anvil cells, compounds of lithium and copper have been synthesized and characterized by X-ray diffraction for the first time. Pressures as low as 1 GPa lead to the formation of a complex layered phase LiCu, displaying two-dimensional kagomé lattice layers of Cu atoms. With increasing pressure, the layered Cu-Cu bonding is replaced by linear chains of Cu atoms in the high-pressure phase Li 2 Cu. Here we show the powerful effects of even modest pressures on the reactivity of lithium, leading to structures of remarkable complexity and low-dimensional transition metal bonding.

The observation of high-temperature superconductivity in hydride sulfide (H 2 S) at high pressures has generated considerable interest in compressed hydrogen-rich compounds. High-pressure hydrogen selenide (H 2 Se) has also been predicted to be superconducting at high temperatures; however, its behaviour and stability upon compression remains unknown. In this study, we synthesize H 2 Se in situ from elemental Se and molecular H 2 at pressures of 0.4 GPa and temperatures of 473 K. On compression at 300 K, we observe the high-pressure solid phase sequence (I-I'-IV) of H 2 Se through Raman spectroscopy and x-ray diffraction measurements, before dissociation into its constituent elements. Through the compression of H 2 Se in H 2 media, we also observe the formation of a host-guest structure, (H 2 Se) 2 H 2 , which is stable at the same conditions as H 2 Se, with respect to decomposition. These measurements show that the behaviour of H 2 Se is remarkably similar to that of H 2 S and provides further understanding of the hydrogen chalcogenides under pressure.

Dias and Silvera (Research Article, 17 February 2017, p. 715) claim the observation of the Wigner-Huntington transition to metallic hydrogen at 495 gigapascals. In situ high-pressure low-temperature high-quality Raman data for hydrogen and deuterium demonstrate the presence of a novel phase, phase II^{'}, unique to deuterium and distinct from the known phase II. Phase II^{'} of D&#95;{2} is not observed in hydrogen, making it the only phase that does not exist in both isotopes and occupies a significant part of P-T space from ∼25 to 110 GPa and below 125 K. For H&#95;{2}, the data show that below 30 K the transition to phase II happens at as low as 73 GPa. The transformation from phase II to III commences at around ∼155  GPa and is completed by 170 GPa with the average pressure of ∼160  GPa being slightly higher than previously thought. The updated phase diagrams of H&#95;{2} and D&#95;{2} demonstrate the difference between the isotopes at low temperatures and moderate pressures, providing new information on the phase diagrams of both elements.

Molecular nitrogen exhibits one of the strongest known interatomic bonds, while xenon possesses a closed-shell electronic structure: a direct consequence of which renders both chemically unreactive. Through a series of optical spectroscopy and x-ray diffraction experiments, we demonstrate the formation of a novel van der Waals compound formed from binary Xe-N 2 mixtures at pressures as low as 5 GPa. At 300 K and 5 GPa Xe(N 2 ) 2 -I is synthesised, and if further compressed, undergoes a transition to a tetragonal Xe(N 2 ) 2 -II phase at 14 GPa; this phase appears to be unexpectedly stable at least up to 180 GPa even after heating to above 2000 K. Raman spectroscopy measurements indicate a distinct weakening of the intramolecular bond of the nitrogen molecule above 60 GPa, while transmission measurements in the visible and mid-infrared regime suggest the metallisation of the compound at ~100 GPa.

Almost 80 years ago it was predicted that, under sufficient compression, the H-H bond in molecular hydrogen (H2) would break, forming a new, atomic, metallic, solid state of hydrogen. Reaching this predicted state experimentally has been one of the principal goals in high-pressure research for the past 30 years. Here, using in situ high-pressure Raman spectroscopy, we present evidence that at pressures greater than 325 gigapascals at 300 kelvin, H2 and hydrogen deuteride (HD) transform to a new phase--phase V. This new phase of hydrogen is characterized by substantial weakening of the vibrational Raman activity, a change in pressure dependence of the fundamental vibrational frequency and partial loss of the low-frequency excitations. We map out the domain in pressure-temperature space of the suggested phase V in H2 and HD up to 388 gigapascals at 300 kelvin, and up to 465 kelvin at 350 gigapascals; we do not observe phase V in deuterium (D2). However, we show that the transformation to phase IV' in D2 occurs above 310 gigapascals and 300 kelvin. These values represent the largest known isotropic shift in pressure, and hence the largest possible pressure difference between the H2 and D2 phases, which implies that the appearance of phase V of D2 must occur at a pressure of above 380 gigapascals. These experimental data provide a glimpse of the physical properties of dense hydrogen above 325 gigapascals and constrain the pressure and temperature conditions at which the new phase exists. We speculate that phase V may be the precursor to the non-molecular (atomic and metallic) state of hydrogen that was predicted 80 years ago.

An alternative approach to loading metal organic frameworks with gas molecules at high (kbar) pressures is reported. The technique, which uses liquefied gases as pressure transmitting media within a diamond anvil cell along with a single-crystal of a porous metal-organic framework, is demonstrated to have considerable advantages over other gas-loading methods when investigating host-guest interactions. Specifically, loading the metal-organic framework Sc2BDC3 with liquefied CO2 at 2 kbar reveals the presence of three adsorption sites, one previously unreported, and resolves previous inconsistencies between structural data and adsorption isotherms. A further study with supercritical CH4 at 3-25 kbar demonstrates hyperfilling of the Sc2 BDC3 and two high-pressure displacive and reversible phase transitions are induced as the filled MOF adapts to reduce the volume of the system., (© 2015 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. The chemical reaction between hydrogen and purely sp(2)-bonded graphene to form graphene's purely sp(3)-bonded analogue, graphane, potentially allows the synthesis of a much wider variety of novel two-dimensional materials by opening a pathway to the application of conventional chemistry methods in graphene. Graphene is currently hydrogenated by exposure to atomic hydrogen in a vacuum, but these methods have not yielded a complete conversion of graphene to graphane, even with graphene exposed to hydrogen on both sides of the lattice. By heating graphene in molecular hydrogen under compression to modest high pressure in a diamond anvil cell (2.6-5.0 GPa), we are able to react graphene with hydrogen and propose a method whereby fully hydrogenated graphane may be synthesized for the first time.

We have investigated the local and electronic structure of solid rubidium by means of x-ray absorption spectroscopy up to 101.0 GPa, thus doubling the maximum investigated experimental pressure. This study confirms the predicted stability of phase VI and was completed by the combination of two pivotal instrumental solutions. On one side, we made use of nanocrystalline diamond anvils, which, contrary to the more commonly used single crystal diamond anvils, do not generate sharp Bragg peaks (glitches) at specific energies that spoil the weak fine structure oscillations in the x-ray absorption cross section. Second, we exploited the performance of a state-of-the-art x-ray focussing device yielding a beam spot size of 5 × 5 μm(2), spatially stable over the entire energy scan. An advanced data analysis protocol was implemented to extract the pressure dependence of the structural parameters in phase VI of solid Rb from 51.2 GPa up to the highest pressure. A continuous reduction of the nearest neighbour distances was observed, reaching about 6% over the probed pressure range. We also discuss a phenomenological model based on the Einstein approximation to describe the pressure behaviour of the mean-square relative displacement. Within this simplified scheme, we estimate the Grüneisen parameter for this high pressure Rb phase to be in the 1.3-1.5 interval.

It has been theorized that at high pressure the increased energy of the zero-point oscillations in hydrogen would destabilize the lattice and form a ground fluid state at 0 K (ref. 1). Theory has also suggested that this fluid state, representing a new state of matter, might have unusual properties governed by quantum effects, such as superfluidity or superconductivity. Here, by combining Raman spectroscopy and in situ high-temperature, high-pressure techniques, we demonstrate that above 200 GPa a new phase transition occurs as temperature is increased, for example 480 K at 255 GPa. If the transformation is interpreted as melting, it would be the lowest melting temperature of any material at these high pressures. We also find a new triple point between phases I and IV and the new phase, and demonstrate that hydrogen retains its molecular character around this point. These data may require a significant revision of the phase diagram of hydrogen above 200 GPa.

Boron carbide is one of the lightest and hardest ceramics, but its applications are limited by its poor stability against a partial phase separation into separate boron and carbon. Phase separation is observed under high non-hydrostatic stress (both static and dynamic), resulting in amorphization. The phase separation is thought to occur in just one of the many naturally occurring polytypes in the material, and this raises the possibility of doping the boron carbide to eliminate this polytype. In this work, we have synthesized boron carbide doped with silicon. We have conducted a series of characterizations (transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy and x-ray diffraction) on pure and silicon-doped boron carbide following static compression to 50 GPa non-hydrostatic pressure. We find that the level of amorphization under static non-hydrostatic pressure is drastically reduced by the silicon doping.

From a combination of powder and single-crystal synchrotron x-ray diffraction data we have determined the carbon substructure of phase B of methane at a pressure of ∼8 GPa. We find this substructure to be cubic with space group I4¯3m and 58 molecules in the unit cell. The unit cell has a lattice parameter a = 11.911(1) Å at 8.3(2) GPa, which is a factor of √2 larger than had previously been proposed by Umemoto et al. [J. Phys.: Condens. Matter 14, 10675 (2002)]. The substructure as now solved is not related to any close-packed arrangement, contrary to previous proposals. Surprisingly, the arrangement of the carbon atoms is isostructural with that of α-manganese at ambient conditions.

Using a combination of the Raman spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations on dense hydrogen-deuterium mixtures of various concentrations, we demonstrate that, at 300 K and above 200 GPa, they transform into phase IV, forming a disordered binary alloy with six highly localized intramolecular vibrational (vibrons) and four delocalized low-frequency (<1200  cm(-1)) modes. Hydrogen-deuterium mixtures are unique in showing a purely mass-induced localization effect in the quantum solid: chemical bonding is isotope-independent while the mass varies by a factor of 2.

We have performed in situ synchrotron x-ray diffraction studies of the iridium-hydrogen system up to 125 GPa. At 55 GPa, a phase transition in the metal lattice from the fcc to a distorted simple cubic phase is observed. The new phase is characterized by a drastically increased volume per metal atom, indicating the formation of a metal hydride, and substantially decreased bulk modulus of 190 GPa (383 GPa for pure Ir). Ab initio calculations show that the hydrogen atoms occupy the face-centered positions in the metal matrix, making this the first known noninterstitial noble metal hydride and, with a stoichiometry of IrH(3), the one with the highest volumetric hydrogen content. Computations also reveal that several energetically competing phases exist, which can all be seen as having distorted simple cubic lattices. Slow kinetics during decomposition at pressures as low as 6 GPa suggest that this material is metastable at ambient pressure and low temperatures.

Density-driven phase transformations are a known phenomenon in liquids. Pressure-driven transitions from an open low-density to a higher-density close-packed structure were observed for a number of systems. Here, we show a less intuitive, inverse behavior. We investigated the electronic, atomic, and dynamic structures of liquid Rb along an isothermal line at 573 K, at 1.2-27.4 GPa, by means of ab initio molecular dynamics simulations and inelastic x-ray scattering experiments. The excellent agreement of the simulations with experimental data performed up to 6.6 GPa validates the overall approach. Above 12.5 GPa, the breakdown of the nearly-free-electron model drives a transition of the pure liquid metal towards a less metallic, denser liquid, whose first coordination shell is less compact. Our study unveils the interplay between electronic, structural, and dynamic degrees of freedom along this liquid-liquid phase transition. In view of its electronic nature, we believe that this behavior is general for the first group elements, thus shedding new light into the high-pressure properties of alkali metals.

The formation of hydride phases in the noble metals copper, silver, and gold was investigated by in situ x-ray diffraction at high hydrogen pressures. In the case of copper, a novel hexagonal hydride phase, Cu2H, was synthesised at pressures above 18.6 GPa. This compound exhibits an anti-CdI2-type structure, where hydrogen atoms occupy every second layer of octahedral interstitial sites. In contrast to chemically produced CuH, this phase does not show a change in compressibility compared to pure copper. Furthermore, repeated compression (after decomposition of Cu2H) led to the formation of cubic copper hydride at 12.5 GPa, a phenomenon attributed to an alteration of the microstructure during dehydrogenation. No hydrides of silver (up to 87 GPa) or gold (up to 113 GPa) were found at both room and high temperatures.

We used Raman and visible transmission spectroscopy to investigate dense hydrogen (deuterium) up to 315 (275) GPa at 300 K. At around 200 GPa, we observe the phase transformation, which we attribute to phase III, previously observed only at low temperatures. This is succeeded at 220 GPa by a reversible transformation to a new phase, IV, characterized by the simultaneous appearance of the second vibrational fundamental and new low-frequency phonon excitations and a dramatic softening and broadening of the first vibrational fundamental mode. The optical transmission spectra of phase IV show an overall increase of absorption and a closing band gap which reaches 1.8 eV at 315 GPa. Analysis of the Raman spectra suggests that phase IV is a mixture of graphenelike layers, consisting of elongated H2 dimers experiencing large pairing fluctuations, and unbound H2 molecules.
