Although gapped grain boundaries have often been observed in bulk and nanosized materials, and their crucial roles in some physical and chemical processes have been confirmed, their acquisition at ultrasmall nanoscale presents a significant challenge. To date, they had not been reported in metal nanoparticles smaller than 2 nm owing to the difficulty in characterization and the high instability of grain boundary (GB) atoms. Herein, we have successfully developed a synthesis method for producing a novel chiral nanocluster Au78(TBBT)40 (TBBT = 4-tert-butylphenylthiol) with a 26-atom gapped and rotated GB. This nanocluster was precisely characterized using single-crystal X-ray crystallography and mass spectrometry. Additionally, an offset atomic defect linked to the peripheral Au(TBBT)2 staple was found in the structure. Comparing it to similarly face-centered cubic-structured Au36(TBBT)24, Au44(TBBT)28, Au52(TBBT)32, Au92(TBBT)44, and ~5 nm nanocrystals, the bridging Au78(TBBT)40 nanocluster exhibits higher catalytic activity in the reduction of CO2 to CO. Materials characterization using electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) requires indexing the orientation of the measured region from Kikuchi patterns. The quality of Kikuchi patterns can degrade due to pattern overlaps arising from two or more orientations, in the presence of defects or grain boundaries. In this work, we employ constrained nonnegative matrix factorization to segment a microstructure with small grain misorientations, (<1∘), and predict the amount of pattern overlap. First, we implement the method on mixed simulated patterns-that replicates a pattern overlap scenario, and demonstrate the resolution limit of pattern mixing or factorization resolution using a weight metric. Subsequently, we segment a single-crystal dendritic microstructure and compare the results with high-resolution EBSD. By utilizing weight metrics across a low-angle grain boundary, we demonstrate how very small misorientations/low-angle grain boundaries can be resolved at a pixel level. Transition metal oxides (TMOs) with high discharge capacity are considered as one of the most promising anodes for lithium-ion batteries. However, the practical utilization of TMOs is largely limited by cycling stability issues arising from volume expansion, structural collapse. In this study, we synthesized a high-entropy spinel oxide material (FeCrNiMnZn) 3 O 4 using a solution combustion method. With the implementation of five cations through high-entropy engineering, the agglomeration and expansion of the electrode materials during charging and discharging are suppressed, and the cycling stability is enhanced. The results demonstrate that entropy-induced high-density grain boundaries and the reversibility of spinel structure contribute to improved capacity and cycling stability. Herein, (FeCrNiMnZn) 3 O 4 provides a high capacity (1374 mAh g -1 ) at 0.1 A g -1 and superior cycling stability (almost 100 %) during 200 cycles with a current density of 0.5 A g -1 . Cation-doped cubic Li 7 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 is regarded as a promising solid electrolyte for safe and energy-dense solid-state lithium batteries. However, it suffers from the formation of Li 2 CO 3 and high electronic conductivity, which give rise to an unconformable Li/Li 7 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 interface and lithium dendrites. Herein, composite AlF 3 -Li 6.4 La 3 Zr 1.4 Ta 0.6 O 12 solid electrolytes were created based on thermal AlF 3 decomposition and F/O displacement reactions under a high-temperature sintering process. When the AlF 3 is thermally decomposed, it leaves Al 2 O 3 /AlF 3 meliorating the grain boundaries and F - ions partially displacing O 2- ions in the grains. Due to the higher electronegativity of F - in the grains and the grain-boundary modification, these AlF 3 -Li 6.4 La 3 Zr 1.4 Ta 0.6 O 12 deliver optimized electronic conduction and chemical stability against the formation of Li 2 CO 3 . The Li/AlF 3 -Li 6.4 La 3 Zr 1.4 Ta 0.6 O 12 /Li cell exhibits a low interfacial resistance of ∼16 Ω cm 2 and an ultrastable long-term cycling behavior for 800 h under a current density of 200 μA/cm 2 , leading to Li//LiCoO 2 solid-state batteries with good rate performance and cycling stability.

Material thermal conductivity is a key factor in various applications, from thermal management to energy harvesting. With microstructure engineering being a widely used method for customizing material properties, including thermal properties, understanding and controlling the role of extended phonon-scattering defects, like grain boundaries, is crucial for efficient material design. However, systematic studies are still lacking primarily due to limited tools. In this study, we demonstrate an approach for measuring grain boundary thermal resistance by probing the propagation of thermal waves across grain boundaries with a temperature-sensitive scanning probe. The method, implemented with a spatial resolution of about 100 nm on finely grained Nb-substituted SrTiO 3 ceramics, achieves a detectability of about 2 × 10 -8 K m 2 W -1 , suitable for chalcogenide-based thermoelectrics. The measurements indicated that the thermal resistance of the majority of grain boundaries in the STiO 3 ceramics is below this value. While there are challenges in improving sensitivity, considering spatial resolution and the amount of material involved in the detection, the sensitivity of the scanning probe method is comparable to that of optical thermoreflectance techniques, and the method opens up an avenue to characterize thermal resistance at the level of single grain boundaries and domain walls in a spectrum of microstructured materials.

Anisotropic bulk magnets of ThMn 12 -type SmFe 10 V 2 with a high coercivity ( H c ) were successfully fabricated. Powders with varying particle sizes were prepared using the ball milling process, where the particle size was controlled with milling time. A decrease in H c occurred in the heat-treated bulk pressed from large-sized powders, while heavy oxidation excessively occurred in small powders, leading to the decomposition of the SmFe 10 V 2 (1-12) phase. The highest H c of 8.9 kOe was achieved with powders ball-milled for 5 h due to the formation of the grain boundary phase. To improve the maximum energy product (( BH ) max ), which is only 2.15 MGOe in the isotropic bulk, anisotropic bulks were prepared using the same powders. The easy alignment direction, confirmed by XRD and EBSD measurements, was <002>. Significant enhancements were observed, with saturation magnetization ( M s ) increasing from 59 to 79 emu/g and a remanence ratio ( M r / M s ) of 83.7%. ( BH ) max reaching 7.85 MGOe. For further improvement of magnetic properties, controlling oxidation is essential to form a uniform grain boundary phase and achieve perfect alignment with small grain size.

Natural phosphatases featuring paired metal sites inspire various advanced nanozymes with phosphatase-like activity as alternatives in practical applications. Numerous efforts to create point defects show limited metal site pairs, further resulting in insufficient activity. However, it remains a grand challenge to accurately engineer abundant metal site pairs in nanozymes. Herein, we report a grain-boundary-rich ceria metallene nanozyme (GB-CeO 2 ) with phosphatase-like activity. Grain boundaries acting as the line or interfacial defects can effectively increase the content of Ce 4+ /Ce 3+ site pairs to 72.28%, achieving a 49.28-fold enhancement in activity. Furthermore, abundant grain boundaries optimize the band structure to assist the photoelectron transfer under irradiation, which further increases the content of metal site pairs to 88.96% and finally realizes a 114.39-fold enhanced activity over that of CeO 2 without irradiation. Given the different inhibition effects of pesticides on catalysts with and without irradiation, GB-CeO 2 was successfully applied to recognize mixed toxic pesticides.

We present large-scale atomistic simulations that reveal triple junction (TJ) segregation in Pt-Au nanocrystalline alloys in agreement with experimental observations. While existing studies suggest grain boundary solute segregation as a route to thermally stabilize nanocrystalline materials with respect to grain coarsening, here we quantitatively show that it is specifically the segregation to TJs that dominates the observed stability of these alloys. Our results reveal that doping the TJs renders them immobile, thereby locking the grain boundary network and hindering its evolution. In dilute alloys, it is shown that grain boundary and TJ segregation are not as effective in mitigating grain coarsening, as the solute content is not sufficient to dope and pin all grain boundaries and TJs. Our work highlights the need to account for TJ segregation effects in order to understand and predict the evolution of nanocrystalline alloys under extreme environments.

The remarkable stability, suitable thermomechanical characteristics, and acceptable electrical properties of donor-doped strontium titanates make them attractive materials for fuel electrodes, interconnects, and supports of solid oxide fuel and electrolysis cells (SOFC/SOEC). The present study addresses the impact of processing and thermochemical treatment conditions on the electrical conductivity of SrTiO 3 -derived ceramics with moderate acceptor-type substitution in a strontium sublattice. A-site-deficient Sr 0.85 La 0.10 TiO 3-δ and cation-stoichiometric Sr 0.85 Pr 0.15 TiO 3+δ ceramics with varying microstructures and levels of reduction have been prepared and characterized by XRD, SEM, TGA, and electrical conductivity measurements under reducing conditions. The analysis of the collected data suggested that the reduction process of dense donor-doped SrTiO 3 ceramics is limited by sluggish oxygen diffusion in the crystal lattice even at temperatures as high as 1300 °C. A higher degree of reduction and higher electrical conductivity can be obtained for porous structures under similar thermochemical treatment conditions. Metallic-like conductivity in dense reduced Sr 0.85 La 0.10 TiO 3-δ corresponds to the state quenched from the processing temperature and is proportional to the concentration of Ti 3+ in the lattice. Due to poor oxygen diffusivity in the bulk, dense Sr 0.85 La 0.10 TiO 3-δ ceramics remain redox inactive and maintain a high level of conductivity under reducing conditions at temperatures below 1000 °C. While the behavior and properties of dense reduced Sr 0.85 Pr 0.15 TiO 3+δ ceramics with a large grain size (10-40 µm) were found to be similar, decreasing grain size down to 1-3 µm results in an increasing role of resistive grain boundaries which, regardless of the degree of reduction, determine the semiconducting behavior and lower total electrical conductivity of fine-grained Sr 0.85 Pr 0.15 TiO 3+δ ceramics. Oxidized porous Sr 0.85 Pr 0.15 TiO 3+δ ceramics exhibit faster kinetics of reduction compared to the Sr 0.85 La 0.10 TiO 3-δ counterpart at temperatures below 1000 °C, whereas equilibration kinetics of porous Sr 0.85 La 0.10 TiO 3-δ structures can be facilitated by reductive pre-treatments at elevated temperatures.

Aqueous Zn-ion batteries are an attractive electrochemical energy storage solution for their budget and safe properties. However, dendrites and uncontrolled side reactions in anodes detract the cycle life and energy density of the batteries. Grain boundaries in metals are generally considered as the source of the above problems but we present a diverse result. This study introduces an ultra-high proportion of grain boundaries on zinc electrodes through femtosecond laser bombardment to enhance stability of zinc metal/electrolyte interface. The ultra-high proportion of grain boundaries promotes the homogenization of zinc growth potential, to achieve uniform nucleation and growth, thereby suppressing dendrite formation. Additionally, the abundant active sites mitigate the side reactions during the electrochemical process. Consequently, the 15 μm Fs-Zn||MnO 2 pouch cell achieves an energy density of 249.4 Wh kg -1 and operates for over 60 cycles at a depth-of-discharge of 23 %. Lithophobic Li 2 CO 3 /LiOH contaminants and high-resistance lithium-deficient phases produced from the exposure of garnet electrolyte to air leads to a decrease in electrolyte ion transfer ability. Additionally, garnet electrolyte grain boundaries (GBs) with narrow bandgap and high electron conductivity are potential channels for current leakage, which accelerate Li dendrites generation, ultimately leading to short-circuiting of all-solid-state batteries (ASSBs). Herein, a stably lithiophilic Li 2 ZO 3 is in situ constructed at garnet electrolyte surface and GBs by interfacial modification with ZrO 2 and Li 2 CO 3 (Z+C) co-sintering to eliminate the detrimental contaminants and lithium-deficient phases. The Li 2 ZO 3 formed on the modified electrolyte (LLZTO-(Z+C)) surface effectively improves the interfacial compatibility and air stability of the electrolyte. Li 2 ZO 3 formed at GBs broadens the energy bandgaps of LLZTO-(Z+C) and significantly inhibits lithium dendrite generation. More Li + transport paths found in LLZTO-Z+C by first-principles calculations increase Li + conductivity from 1.04×10 -4 to 7.45×10 -4  S cm -1 . Eventually, the Li|LLZTO-(Z+C)|Li symmetric cell maintains stable cycling for over 2000 h at 0.8 mA cm -2 . The capacity retention of LiFePO 4 |LLZTO-(Z+C)|Li battery retains 70.5% after 5800 ultralong cycles at 4 C. The electrochemical CO 2 reduction reaction (eCO 2 RR) to multicarbon chemicals provides a promising avenue for storing renewable energy. Herein, we synthesized small Cu nanoparticles featuring enriched tiny grain boundaries (RGBs-Cu) through spatial confinement and in situ electroreduction. In-situ spectroscopy and theoretical calculations demonstrate that small-sized Cu grain boundaries significantly enhance the adsorption of the *CO intermediate, owing to the presence of abundant low-coordinated and disordered atoms. Furthermore, these grain boundaries, generated in situ under high current conditions, exhibit excellent stability during the eCO 2 RR process, thereby creating a stable *CO-rich microenvironment. This high local *CO concentration around the catalyst surface can reduce the energy barrier for C-C coupling and significantly increase the Faradaic efficiency (FE) for multicarbon products across both neutral and alkaline electrolytes. Specifically, the developed RGBs-Cu electrocatalyst achieved a peak FE of 77.3% for multicarbon products and maintained more than 134 h stability at a constant current density of -500 mA cm -2 .

Narrow-bandgap (NBG) mixed tin-lead (Sn-Pb) perovskite solar cells (PSCs) serve as crucial top subcells in all-perovskite tandem solar cells (TSCs). However, the prevalent use of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT: PSS) hole transport layers (HTLs) in NBG PSCs compromises device efficiency and stability. To address this, the study proposes a revitalizing strategy for the buried interface of Sn-Pb perovskites by directly immersing acetylcholine chloride (ACh) into PEDOT: PSS. ACh acts as a proficient "diver," not only modulating the bottom PEDOT: PSS HTLs but also facilitating the reconstruction of the buried interface and significantly enhancing the quality of the top perovskite layers. This intervention with ACh prevents Sn 2+ oxidation, mitigates buried defects, and encourages the growth of large, densely packed grains within Sn-Pb perovskites. Consequently, the optimized NBG PSCs exhibit significantly improved hole transport and reduced carrier recombination, achieving a steady-state efficiency of 22.98% with enhanced stability. Furthermore, these optimized NBG Sn-Pb cells enable highly efficient two-terminal and four-terminal all-perovskite TSCs, boasting steady-state efficiencies of 27.54% (certified at 26.41%) and 28.01%, respectively. Spiral inorganic perovskite nanowires (NWs) possess unique morphologies and properties that allow them highly attractive for applications in optoelectronic and catalytic fields. In popular solution-based synthesis methodology, however, challenges persist in simultaneously achieving precise and facile control over morphological twisting and fantastic carrier lifetimes. Here, a cooperative strategy of concurrently employing selective etching and ligand engineering is applied to facilitate the formation of spiral CsPbBr 3 perovskite NWs with an ultralong carrier lifetime of ≈2 µs. Specifically, a novel amine of 1-(p-tolyl)ethanamine is introduced to functionalize as both a selective etchant and the source of forming an effective ligand to passivate the exposed facets, favoring the structural twisting and the enhancement of carrier lifetimes. The twisting behaviors are dependent on the etch ratios, which are essentially associated with the densities of grain boundaries and dislocations in the NWs. The ultralong carrier lifetime and long-term stability of the spiral NWs open up new possibilities for all-inorganic perovskites in optoelectronic and photocatalytic fields, while the cooperative synthesis strategy paves the way for exploring complex spiral structures with tunable morphology and functionality., (© 2024 Wiley‐VCH GmbH.)

A phase-field model for the precipitation of Fe-Cr-Al alloy is established incorporating grain boundary (GB) effects and irradiation-accelerated diffusion. The radiation source and grain boundary effect are incorporated to broaden the applicability of the Fe-Cr-Al precipitated phase-field model. The model is firstly employed to simulate the precipitation of the Cr-rich α' phase in a single-crystal alloy. The precipitation rate and the size distribution of the precipitated phase were analyzed. Subsequently, the model is utilized to simulate segregation at GBs in a double-crystal system, analyzing the enrichment of Cr and depletion of Al near these boundaries. The simulation results are consistent with experimental observations reported in the references. Finally, the model is applied to simulate the precipitation in a polycrystalline Fe-Cr-Al system. The simulated results revealed that the presence of GBs induces the formation of localized regions with enhanced Cr and Al content as well as depleted zones adjacent to these boundaries. GBs also diminish both the quantity and precipitation rate of the formed phase within the grains.

Proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE) is considered a promising technology for coupling with renewable energy sources to achieve clean hydrogen production. However, constrained by the sluggish kinetics of the anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and the acidic abominable environment render the grand challenges in developing the active and stable OER electrocatalyst, leading to low efficiency of PEMWE. Herein, we develop the rutile-type IrO 2 nanoparticles with abundant grain boundaries and the continuous nanostructure through the joule heating and sacrificial template method. The optimal candidate (350-IrO 2 ) demonstrates remarkable electrocatalytic activity and stability during the OER, presenting a promising advancement for efficient PEMWE. DFT calculations verified that grain boundaries can modulate the electronic structure of Ir sites and optimize the adsorption of oxygen intermediates, resulting in the accelerated kinetics. 350-IrO 2 affords a rapid OER process with 20 times higher mass activity (0.61 A mg Ir -1 ) than the commercial IrO 2 at 1.50 V vs. RHE. Benefiting from the reduced overpotential and the preservation of the stable rutile structure, 350-IrO 2 exhibits the stability of 200 h test at 10 mA cm -2 with only trace decay of 11.8 mV. Moreover, the assembled PEMWE with anode 350-IrO 2 catalyst outputs the current density up to 2 A cm -2 with only 1.84 V applied voltage, long-term operation for 100 h without obvious performance degradation at 1 A cm -2 ., (© 2024 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)

The last two decades have witnessed significant progress in the development of severe plastic deformation techniques to produce ultrafine-grained materials with new and superior properties. This review examines works and achievements related to the low-temperature superplasticity of ultrafine-grained aluminum alloys. The examples are provided of the possibility to observe low-temperature superplasticity in aluminum alloys at temperatures less than 0.5 T melt and even at room temperature, and herein, we demonstrate the cases of achieving high ductility and high strength in aluminum alloys from processing utilizing severe plastic deformation. Special emphasis is placed on recent studies of the formation of segregations of alloying elements at grain boundaries in UFG Al alloys and their influence on the development of grain boundary sliding and manifestation of low-temperature superplasticity. In addition, the current status and innovative potential of low-temperature superplasticity in aluminum alloys are observed.

Infiltration of excessive antibiotics into aquatic ecosystems plays a significant role in antibiotic resistance, a major global health challenge. It is therefore critical to develop effective technologies for their removal. Herein, defect-rich Bi 2 WO 6 nanoparticles are solvothermally prepared via epitaxial growth on pristine Bi 2 WO 6 seed nanocrystals, and the efficiency of the photocatalytic degradation of ciprofloxacin, a common antibiotic, is found to increase markedly from 62.51% to 98.27% under visible photoirradiation for 60 min. This is due to the formation of a large number of structural defects, where the synergistic interactions between grain boundaries and adjacent dislocations and oxygen vacancies lead to an improved separation and migration efficiency of photogenerated carriers and facilitate the adsorption and degradation of ciprofloxacin, as confirmed in experimental and theoretical studies. Monolayer WTe 2 has attracted significant attention for its unconventional superconductivity and topological edge states. However, its air sensitivity poses challenges for studying intrinsic defect structures. This study addresses this issue using a custom-built inert gas interconnected system, and investigate the intrinsic grain boundary (GB) structures of monolayer polycrystalline 1T' WTe 2 grown by nucleation-controlled chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method. These findings reveal that GBs in this system are predominantly governed by W-Te rhombi with saturated coordination, resulting in three specific GB prototypes without dislocation cores. The GBs exhibit anisotropic orientations influenced by kinks formed from these fundamental units, which in turn affect the distribution of grains in various shapes within polycrystalline flakes. Scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/S) analysis further reveals metallic states along the intrinsic 120° twin grain boundary (TGB), consistent with computed band structures. Cesium (Cs) incorporation and sulfurization on copper indium gallium selenide solar cells are the keys to improving the device quality. In this study, we explore the impact of Cs modulation on sulfur-containing Cu(In, Ga)(S, Se) 2 (CIGSSe) absorbers, resulting in a performance increase of over 2%, reaching 18.11%. The improvement stems from a widened surface bandgap, grain boundary (GB) passivation, and a moderate injection blocking layer. The surface bandgap widens from 1.44 to 2.63 eV after Cs incorporation, confirmed by ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) and low-energy inverse photoemission spectroscopy (LEIPS) analysis. Cs presence and S depletion in GBs suggest a new phase that might mitigate carrier recombination. Heightened Cs incorporation introduces interface issues, including an augmented injection blocking layer and interface defects. Our study offers insights into interface challenges and GB engineering strategies in Cs-treated CIGSSe solar cells, illuminating the multifaceted impact of heavy alkali metal ion Cs in CIGS-based photovoltaics.

The widespread use of high-capacity Ni-rich layered oxides such as LiNi 0.8 Mn 0.1 Co 0.1 O 2 (NMC811), in lithium-ion batteries is hindered due to practical capacity loss and reduced working voltage during operation. Aging leads to defective NMC811 particles, affecting electrochemical performance. Surface modification offers a promising approach to improve cycle life. Here, we introduce an amorphous lithium titanate (LTO) coating via atomic layer deposition (ALD), not only covering NMC811 surfaces but also penetrating cavities and grain boundaries. As NMC811 electrodes suffer from low structural stability during charge and discharge, We combined electrochemistry, operando X-ray diffraction (XRD), and dilatometry to understand structural changes and the coating protective effects. XRD reveals significant structural evolution during delithiation for uncoated NMC811. The highly reversible phase change in coated NMC811 highlights enhanced bulk structure stability. The LTO coating retards NMC811 degradation, boosting capacity retention from 86 % to 93 % after 140 cycles. Electrochemical CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) presents a unique opportunity to convert carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) to value-added products while simultaneously storing renewable energy in the form of chemical energy. However, particle applications of this technology are limited due to the poor efficiency and product selectivity of the existing catalyst. In this study, we demonstrate a facile method for the heat-induced transformation of copper nanowires into CuO x /Cu nanotubes with defect-enriched surfaces. During this transformation, the outward migration of copper results in the formation of tubular structures encased within nanosized oxide grains. Notably, the hydrogen faradaic efficiency (FE) decreases with extended heat treatment, while carbon monoxide (CO) FE increases. As compared to Cu NWs, Cu NTs exhibit lower selectivity towards H 2 and single-carbon (C 1 ) products and favor the formation of multi-carbon (C 2+ ) products. Consequently, a 2-fold increase in the single pass CO 2 conversion (SPCC) and C 2+ half-cell energy efficiency (EE half cell ) was noted after heat treatment. In this work, the hierarchical topology ring (HTR+) algorithm, an extension of the HTR algorithm, was developed for identifying gas hydrate types, cage structures, and grain boundaries (GBs) within polycrystalline structures. Utilizing molecular dynamics trajectories of polycrystalline hydrates, the accuracy of the HTR+ algorithm is validated in identifying sI, sII and sH hydrate types, hydrate grains, and GBs in multi-hydrate polycrystals, as well as clathrate cages at GBs. Additionally, during the hydrate nucleation and growth processes, clathrate cages, hydrate type, hydrate grains and ice structures are accurately recognized. Significantly, this algorithm demonstrates high efficiency, particularly for large hydrate systems. Aluminum-incorporated medium-manganese steel (MMnS) has potential for lightweight transport applications owing to its impressive mechanical properties. Increasing the austenite volume fraction and making microstructural changes are key to manufacturing MMnS. However, the grain boundary character and strain distribution of intercritically annealed low-density MMnS have not been extensively scrutinized, and the effects of crystallographic texture orientation on tensile properties remain ambiguous. Therefore, in this study, the microstructure, microtexture, strain distribution, and grain boundary characteristics of a hot-rolled medium-Mn steel (Fe-0.2 C-4.3 Al-9.4 Mn (wt%)) were investigated after intercritical annealing (IA) at 750, 800, or 850 °C for 1 h. The results show that the 800 °C annealed sample exhibited the highest austenite volume fraction among the specimens (60%). The duplex microstructure comprised lath-type γ-austenite, fine α-ferrite, and coarse δ-ferrite. As the IA temperature increased, the body-centered cubic phase orientation shifted from <001> to <111>. At higher temperatures, the face-centered cubic phase was oriented in directions ranging from <101> to <111>, and the sums of the fractions of high-angle grain boundaries and coincidence-site-lattice special boundaries were significantly increased. The 800 °C annealed sample with a high austenite content and strong γ-fiber {111}//RD orientation demonstrated a noteworthy tensile strength (1095 MPa) and tensile elongation (30%).

Grain boundary (GB) precipitation-induced cracking is a significant issue for S31254 super austenitic stainless steel during hot working. Investigating the deformation behavior based on precipitate morphology and distribution is essential. In this study, continuous smaller and intermittent larger precipitates were obtained through heat treatments at 950 °C and 1050 °C. The microstructure evolution and mechanical properties influenced by precipitates were experimentally investigated using an in situ tensile stage inside a scanning electron microscope (SEM) combined with electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). The results showed that continuous precipitates at 950 °C had a stronger pinning effect on the GB, making grain rotation difficult and promoting slip deformation in the plastic interval. Continuous precipitates caused severe stress concentration near GB and reduced coordinated deformation ability. Additionally, the crack propagation path changed from transcrystalline to intercrystalline. Furthermore, internal precipitates were a crucial factor affecting the initial crack nucleation position. Interconnected precipitates led to an intergranular fracture tendency and severe deterioration of the material's plasticity, as observed in fracture morphology.

Two-dimensional (2D) semiconducting materials have attracted significant interest as promising candidates for channel materials owing to their high mobility and gate tunability at atomic-layer thickness. However, the development of 2D electronics is impeded due to the difficulty in formation of high-quality dielectrics with a clean and nondestructive interface. Here, we report the direct van der Waals epitaxial growth of a molecular crystal dielectric, Sb 2 O 3 , on 2D materials by physical vapor deposition. The grown Sb 2 O 3 nanosheets showed epitaxial relations of 0 and 180° with the 2D template, maintaining high crystallinity and an ultrasharp vdW interface with the 2D materials. As a result, the Sb 2 O 3 nanosheets exhibited a high breakdown field of 18.6 MV/cm for 2L Sb 2 O 3 with a thickness of 1.3 nm and a very low leakage current of 2.47 × 10 -7 A/cm 2 for 3L Sb 2 O 3 with a thickness of 1.96 nm. We also observed two types of grain boundaries (GBs) with misorientation angles of 0 and 60°. The 0°-GB with a well-stitched boundary showed higher electrical and thermal stabilities than those of the 60°-GB with a disordered boundary. Our work demonstrates a method to epitaxially grow molecular crystal dielectrics on 2D materials without causing any damage, a requirement for high-performance 2D electronics.

The manufacturing process for wrought Ti alloys with the hexagonal close-packed (HCP) structure introduces a complicated microstructure with abundant intra- and inter-grain boundaries, which greatly influence performance. In the hexagonal close-packed (HCP) structure, two types of grain boundaries are commonly observed between grains with ~90° misorientation: the basal/prismatic boundary (BPB) and the coherent twin boundary (CTB). The mechanical response of the BPB and CTB under external loading was studied through molecular dynamic simulations of HCP-Ti. The results revealed that CTB undergoes transformation into BPB through the accumulation of twin boundary (TB) steps and subsequent emission of Shockley partial dislocations. When the total mismatch vector is close to the Burgers vector of a Shockley partial dislocation, BPB emits partial dislocations and further grows along the stacking faults. When a pair of CTBs are close to each other, severe boundary distortion occurs, facilitating the emission and absorption of partial dislocations, which further assists the CTB-BPB transformation. The present results thus help to explain the frequent observation of coexisting CTB and BPB in HCP alloys and further contribute to the understanding of their microstructure and property regulation.

Cathodoluminescence and electron backscatter diffraction have been applied to exactly the same grain boundaries (GBs) in a Cu(In,Ga)S 2 solar absorber in order to investigate the influence of microstructure on the radiative recombination behaviour at the GBs. Two different types of GB with different microstructure were analysed in detail: random high angle grain boundaries (RHAGBs) and Σ3 GBs. We found that the radiative recombination at all RHAGBs was inhibited to some extent, whereas at Σ3 GBs three different observations were made: unchanged, hindered, or promoted radiative recombination. These distinct behaviours may be linked to atomic-scale grain boundary structural differences. The majority of GBs also exhibited a small spectral shift of about ±10 meV relative to the local grain interior (GI) and a few of them showed spectral shifts of up to ±40 meV. Catalyst surface dynamics drive the generation of active species for electrocatalytic reactions. Yet, the understanding of dominant site formation and reaction mechanisms is limited. In this study, we thoroughly investigate the dynamic reconstruction of two-dimensional defective Bi nanosheets from exfoliated Bi 2 Se 3 nanosheets under electrochemical CO 2 and nitrate (NO 3 - ) reduction conditions. The ultrathin Bi 2 Se 3 nanosheets obtained by NaBH 4 -assisted cryo-mediated liquid-phase exfoliation are more easily reduced and reconstructed to Bi nanosheets with high-density grain boundaries (GBs; GB-rich Bi). The reconstructed GB-rich Bi catalyst affords a remarkable yield rate of 4.6 mmol h -1 mg cat. -1 and Faradaic efficiency of 32 % for urea production at -0.40 V vs. RHE. Notably, this yield rate is 2 and 8.2 times higher than those of the low-GB Bi and bulk Bi catalysts, respectively. Theoretical analysis demonstrates that the GB sites significantly reduce the *CO and *NH 2 intermediate formation energy and C-N coupling energy barrier, enabling selective urea electrosynthesis on the GB-rich Bi catalyst. The Ca 12 Al 14 O 33 ceramic (C12A7) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) composite which an ultra-high amount (i.e., 40, 50, 60, and 70 wt%) of rGO (ultra-high amount C12A7/rGO composite) were synthesized by a solid-state reaction process. After the hydraulic press, the heat treatment in the temperature range of 773 K under the argon environment had been performed with the composite pellets for 30 min. XRD results of the C12A7 and all the ultra-high amount C12A7/rGO composites indicated a pure phase of C12A7 ceramic. Raman spectra confirmed the existence of rGO content in all the ultra-high amount C12A7/rGO composites. Raman peaks also suggested reduction of the free O 2 2 - and O 2 - ions from the framework of the ultra-high amount C12A7/rGO composites. SEM image presented the homogeneous grain boundary interface after the heat treatment at 773 K of the C12A7 wrapped by the rGO sheet, the agglomerated rGO sheet, and the rough interface stack of rGO sheets. UV-VIS spectroscopy presented the absorption behavior, direct energy gap, and indirect energy gap modifications of the ultra-high amount C12A7/rGO composites. Electrical conductivity of the ultra-high amount C12A7/rGO composites illustrated larger than 10 8 times improvement with temperature independence. Range of -5 to -17 μ V / K , temperature dependence, and increased with rGO content increasing Seebeck coefficient were reported. Thermal conductivity of the ultra-high amount C12A7/rGO composites was increased with the rGO content increasing. Both the Power factor (PF) and the figure of merit (ZT) of the ultra-high amount C12A7/rGO composites were temperature dependent and were increased with the rGO content increasing, within the range of 0.4 μ W / m . K 2 of PF and the range of 3 x 10 - 4 of ZT, respectively. Grain boundaries (GBs) in two-dimensional (2D) covalent organic frameworks (COFs) unavoidably form during the fabrication process, playing pivotal roles in the physical characteristics of COFs. Herein, molecular dynamics simulations were employed to elucidate the fracture failure and thermal transport mechanisms of polycrystalline COFs (p-COFs). The results revealed that the tilt angle of GBs significantly influences out-of-plane wrinkles and residual stress in monolayer p-COFs. The tensile strength of p-COFs can be enhanced and weakened with the tilt angle, which exhibits an inverse relationship with the defect density. The crack always originates from weaker heptagon rings during uniaxial tension. Notably, the thermal transport in p-COFs is insensitive to the GBs due to the variation of minor polymer chain length at defects, which is abnormal for other 2D crystalline materials. This study contributes insights into the impact of GBs in p-COFs and offers theoretical guidance for structural design and practical applications of advanced COFs.

Strain sensors are sensitive to mechanical deformations and enable the detection of strain also within integrated electronics. For flexible displays, the use of a seamlessly integrated strain sensor would be beneficial, and graphene is already in use as a transparent and flexible conductor. However, graphene intrinsically lacks a strong response, and only by engineering defects, such as grain boundaries, one can induce piezoresistivity. Nanocrystalline graphene (NCG), a derivative form of graphene, exhibits a high density of defects in the form of grain boundaries. It holds an advantage over graphene in easily achieving wafer-scale growth with controlled thickness. In this study, we explore the piezoresistivity in thin films of nanocrystalline graphite. Simultaneous measurements of sheet resistance and externally applied strain on NCG placed on polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrates provide intriguing insights into the underlying mechanism. Raman measurements, in conjunction with strain applied to NCG grown on flexible glass, indicate that the strain is concentrated at the grain boundaries for smaller strain values. The development of efficient and durable high-current-density hydrogen production electrocatalysts is crucial for the large-scale production of green hydrogen and the early realization of hydrogen economic blueprint. Herein, the evolution of grain boundaries through Cu-mediated NiMo bimetallic oxides (MCu-BNiMo), which leading to the high efficiency of electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution process (HER) in industrial-grade current density, is successfully driven. The optimal MCu 0.10 -BNiMo demonstrates ultrahigh current density (>2 A cm -2 ) at a smaller overpotential in 1 m KOH (572 mV), than that of BNiMo, which does not have lattice strain. Experimental and theoretical calculations reveal that MCu 0.10 -BNiMo with optimal lattice strain generated more electrophilic Mo sites with partial oxidation owing to accelerated charge transfer from Cu to Mo, which lowers the energy barriers for H* adsorption. These synergistic effects lead to the enhanced HER performance of MCu 0.10 -BNiMo. More importantly, industrial application of MCu 0.10 -BNiMo operated in alkaline electrolytic cell is also determined, with its current density reached 0.5 A cm -2 at 2.12 V and 0.1 A cm -2 at 1.79 V, which is nearly five-fold that of the state-of-the-art HER electrocatalyst Pt/C. Nanoscale defects like grain boundaries (GBs) would introduce local phonon modes and affect the bulk materials' thermal, electrical, optical, and mechanical properties. It is highly desirable to correlate the phonon modes and atomic arrangements for individual defects to precisely understand the structure-property relation. Here we investigated the localized phonon modes of Al 2 O 3 GBs by combination of the vibrational electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) in scanning transmission electron microscope and density functional perturbation theory (DFPT). The differences between GB and bulk obtained from the vibrational EELS show that the GB exhibited more active vibration at the energy range of <50 meV and >80 meV, and further DFPT results proved the wide distribution of bond lengths at GB are the main factor for the emergence of local phonon modes. This research provides insights into the phonon-defect relation and would be of importance in the design and application of polycrystalline materials.

Grain boundaries (GBs) serve not only as strong barriers to dislocation motion, but also as important carriers to accommodate plastic deformation in crystalline solids. During deformation, the inherent excess volume associated with loose atomic packing in GBs brings about a microscopic degree of freedom that can initiate GB plasticity, which is beyond the classic geometric description of GBs. However, identification of this atomistic process has long remained elusive due to its transient nature. Here, we use Au polycrystals to unveil a general and inherent route to initiating GB plasticity via a transient topological transition process triggered by the excess volume. This route underscores the general impact of a microscopic degree of freedom which is governed by a stress-triaxiality-based criterion. Electrochemical conversion of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) into syngas is considered a promising approach to mitigate global warming and achieve the recycling of carbon resources. In this work, a series of core-shell metal (copper/indium) oxides with abundant grain boundaries (GBs) between the amorphous In 2 O 3 and cubic Cu 2 O have been prepared by template-assisted co-precipitation method and tested for the synthesis of syngas by electrochemical CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR). The phases of Cu 2 O and In 2 O 3 are independent in bimetallic oxides and do not form any alloy oxidation phase, thus Cu 2 O and In 2 O 3 can maintain their crystal structure and chemical properties in bimetallic oxides. The Cu 2 O and In 2 O 3 would been completely reduced to metallic Cu and In during CO 2 RR. The derived copper/indium possesses the maximum FE of CO (80 %) at -0.77 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) and a good stability of 10 h in an H-type cell. Further applied the copper/indium oxide in the MEA reactor, the FE of CO is more than 80 % at 2.6 V and the total FE of syngas is near 100 % at all applied potentials. More importantly, the H 2 /CO ratios can be tuned from 1/1 to 1/4 by changing the applied voltages in MEA. Grain boundary (GB) fracture is a major mechanism of material failure in polycrystalline ceramics. However, the intricate atomic arrangements of GBs have impeded our understanding of the atomistic mechanisms of these processes. In this study, we investigated the atomic-scale crack propagation behavior of an α-Al 2 O 3 ∑13 grain boundary, using a combination of in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning TEM. The atomic-scale fracture path along the GB core was directly determined by the observation of the atomic structures of the fractured surfaces, which is consistent with density functional theory calculations. We found that the GB fracture can be attributed to the weaker local bonds and a smaller number of bonds along the fracture path. Our findings provide atomistic insights into the mechanisms of crack propagation along GBs, offering significant implications for GB engineering and the toughening of ceramics.

Grain boundaries (GBs)-triggered severe non-radiative recombination is recently recognized as the main culprits for carrier loss in polycrystalline kesterite photovoltaic devices. Accordingly, further optimization of kesterite-based thin film solar cells critically depends on passivating the grain interfaces of polycrystalline Cu 2 ZnSn(S,Se) 4 (CZTSSe) thin films. Herein, 2D material of graphene is first chosen as a passivator to improve the detrimental GBs. By adding graphene dispersion to the CZTSSe precursor solution, single-layer graphene is successfully introduced into the GBs of CZTSSe absorber. Due to the high carrier mobility and electrical conductivity of graphene, GBs in the CZTSSe films are transforming into electrically benign and do not act as high recombination sites for carrier. Consequently, benefitting from the significant passivation effect of GBs, the use of 0.05 wt% graphene additives increases the efficiency of CZTSSe solar cells from 10.40% to 12.90%, one of the highest for this type of cells. Catalysts involving post-transition metals have shown almost invincible performance on generating formate in electrochemical CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR). Conversely, Cu without post-transition metals has struggled to achieve comparable activity. In this study, a sulfur (S)-doped-copper (Cu)-based catalyst is developed, exhibiting excellent performance in formate generation with a maximum Faradaic efficiency of 92 % and a partial current density of 321 mA cm -2 . Ex situ structural elucidations reveal the presence of abundant grain boundaries and high retention of S-S bonds from the covellite phase during CO 2 RR. Furthermore, thermodynamic calculations demonstrate that S-S bonds can moderate the binding energies with various intermediates, further improving the activity of the formate pathway. Negative differential resistance (NDR), a phenomenon in which the current decreases when the applied voltage is increased, is attracting attention as a unique electrical property. Here, we propose a broad spectral photo/gate cotunable channel switching NDR (CS-NDR) device. The proposed CS-NDR device has superior linear gate-tunable NDR behavior and highly reproducible properties compared to the previously reported NDR devices, as the fundamental mechanism of the CS-NDR device is directly related to a charge transport channel switching by the linear increase of the applied drain voltage. We also experimentally demonstrate that the photoinduced NDR behavior of the CS-NDR device was derived from the grain boundaries of dinaphtho[2;3-b:2',3'-f]-thieno[3,2- b ]thiophene. Furthermore, this work produces a 9 × 9 CS-NDR device array composed of 81 devices, providing the reproducibility and uniformity of the CS-NDR device. Finally, we successfully demonstrate the detection of text images with 81 CS-NDR devices using the proposed photo/gate cotunable NDR behavior.

Even though grain boundaries (GBs) have been previously employed to increase the number of active catalytic sites or tune the binding energies of reaction intermediates for promoting electrocatalytic reactions, the effect of GBs on the tailoring of the local chemical environment on the catalyst surface has not been clarified thus far. In this study, a GBs-enriched iridium (GB-Ir) was synthesized and examined for the alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Operando Raman spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that a local acid-like environment with H 3 O + intermediates was created in the GBs region owing to the electron-enriched surface Ir atoms at the GBs. The H 3 O + intermediates lowered the energy barrier for water dissociation and provided enough hydrogen proton to promote the generation of hydrogen spillover from the sites at the GBs to the sites away from the GBs, thus synergistically enhancing the hydrogen evolution activity. Notably, the GB-Ir catalyst exhibited a high alkaline HER activity (10 mV @ 10 mA cm -2 , 20 mV dec -1 ). Atomicforce microscopy (AFM)-based scanning probing techniques, including Kelvinprobe force microscopy (KPFM) and conductive atomic force microscopy (C-AFM), have been widely applied to investigate thelocal electromagnetic, physical, or molecular characteristics of functional materials on a microscopic scale. The microscopic inhomogeneities of the electronic properties of polycrystalline photovoltaic materials can be examined by these advanced AFM techniques, which bridge the local properties of materials to overall device performance and guide the optimization of the photovoltaic devices. In this review, the critical roles of local optoelectronic heterogeneities, especially at grain interiors (GIs) and grain boundaries (GBs) of polycrystalline photovoltaic materials, including versatile polycrystalline silicon, inorganic compound materials, and emerging halide perovskites, studied by KPFM and C-AFM, are systematically identified. How the band alignment and electrical properties of GIs and GBs affect the carrier transport behavior are discussed from the respective of photovoltaic research. Further exploiting the potential of such AFM-based techniques upon a summary of their up-to-date applications in polycrystalline photovoltaic materials is beneficial to acomprehensive understanding of the design and manipulation principles of thenovel solar cells and facilitating the development of the next-generation photovoltaics and optoelectronics., (© 2023 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)

Three-dimensional elemental mapping in atom probe microscopy provides invaluable insights into the structure and composition of interfaces in materials. Quasi-atomic resolution facilitates access to the solute decoration of grain boundaries, advancing the knowledge on local segregation and depletion phenomena. More recent developments unlocked three-dimensional mapping of the interfacial excess across grain boundaries. Such detailed understanding of the local structure and composition of these interfaces enabled advancements in processing methods and material development. However, many engineering alloys, such as Ni-based superalloys, have much more complex microstructures with various solutes and precipitates in close proximity to grain boundaries. The complex interaction of grain boundary segregation and grain boundary precipitates requires precise compositional control. However, abrupt changes in solute solubility across phase boundaries obscure the interfacial excess in proximity to grain boundaries. Therefore, this study provides a methodological framework of the quantitative characterization of phase boundaries in proximity to grain boundaries using atom probe microscopy. The detailed mass spectrum ranging of MC, M 23 C 6 , and M 6 C carbides is explored in order to achieve satisfactory compositional information. Proximity histograms and correlating concentration difference profiles determine the interface location, where a Gibbs dividing surface is not accessible. This enables reliable direct calculation of the interfacial excess across phase boundaries. Intuitively interpretable and quantitative 'interface plots' are introduced, and showcased for phase boundaries between γ-matrix, γ' precipitates, GB-γ', MC, M 23 C 6 , and M 6 C carbides. Ta-doped Li 7 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 (LLZTO) garnet is a promising Li-ion-conducting ceramic electrolyte for solid-state batteries. However, it is still challenging to use LLZTO in Li metal batteries operating at high current densities because of the tendency for Li metal to nucleate and propagate along the grain boundaries. In this study, we carry out a detailed investigation to elucidate the effect of microstructure and grain size on the electrochemical properties and short circuit behavior in LLZTO. Pellets were prepared using reactive sintering from pyrochlore precursors (a method called pyrochlore-to-garnet, P2G) and compared with LLZTO synthesized using solid-state reaction (SSR) followed by conventional pressureless sintering. Both preparation methods were controlled to keep the phase and elemental composition, ionic and electronic conductivity, relative density, and area-specific resistance of the pellets constant. Reflection electron energy loss spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirm that both types of LLZTO have similar band gaps and chemical states. Microstructure analysis shows that the P2G method results in LLZTO with an average grain size of around 3 μm, which is much smaller than the grain sizes (as large as 20 μm) seen in SSR LLZTO. Galvanostatic Li stripping/plating and linear sweep voltammetry measurements show that P2G LLZTO can withstand higher critical current densities (up to 0.4 mA/cm 2 in bidirectional cycling and >1 mA/cm 2 for unidirectional) than those seen in SSR LLZTO. Post-mortem examination reveals much less Li deposition along the grain boundaries of P2G LLZTO, particularly in the bulk of the pellet, compared to SSR LLZTO after cycling. The improved cycling behavior in P2G LLZTO despite the higher grain boundary area could be from more homogeneous current density at the interfaces and different grain boundary properties arising from the liquid-phase, reactive sintering method. These results suggest that the effect of grain size on Li dendrite propagation in LLZO may be highly dependent on the synthesis and sintering method employed.

Despite the attractive thermoelectric properties in single crystals, the fabrication of high-performance polycrystalline SnSe by a cost-effective strategy remains challenging. In this study, we prepare the undoped SnSe ceramic with remarkable thermoelectric efficiency by the combination of a cold sintering process (CSP) and thermal annealing. The high sintering pressure during CSP induces not only highly oriented grains but also a high concentration of lattice dislocations and stacking faults, which leads to large lattice strain that can shorten the phonon relaxation time. Meanwhile, the thermal annealing breaks the highly resistive SnO x layers at grain boundaries, which improves the electrical conductivity and power factor. In addition, the grain growth during annealing further turns the broken SnO x layers into nanoparticles, which further lowers the thermal conductivity by enhanced scattering. As a result, a peak ZT of 1.3 at 890 K and a high average ZT of 0.69 are achieved in the polycrystalline SnSe, suggesting great potential in mid-temperature power generation. This work may pave the way for the mass production of SnSe-based ceramics for thermoelectric devices.

This paper reviews quantitative characterization via transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and its application to interfacial phenomena based on the results obtained through the studies. Several signals generated by the interaction between the specimen and the electron beam with a probe size of less than 1 nm are utilized for a quantitative analysis, which yields considerable chemical and physical information. This review describes several phenomena near the interfaces, e.g., clear solid-vapor interface (surface) segregation of yttria in the zirconia nanoparticles by an energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analysis, the evaluation of the local magnetic moment at the grain boundary in terms of electron energy loss spectroscopy equipped with TEM, and grain boundary character dependence of the magnetism. The direct measurement of the stress to the dislocation transferred across the grain boundary and the microstructure evolution focused on the grain boundary formation caused by plastic deformation are discussed as examples of material dynamics associated with the grain boundary. Finally, the outlook for future investigations of interface studies, including the recent progress, is also discussed.

Grain rotation is commonly observed during the evolution of microstructures in polycrystalline materials of different kinds, including metals, ceramics, and colloidal crystals. It is widely accepted that interface migration in these systems is mediated by the motion of line defects with step and dislocation character, i.e., disconnections. We propose a crystallography-respecting continuum model for arbitrarily curved grain boundaries or heterophase interfaces, accounting for the disconnections' role in grain rotation. Numerical simulations demonstrate that changes in grain orientations, as well as interface morphology and internal stress field, are associated with disconnection flow. Our predictions agree with molecular dynamics simulation results for pure capillarity-driven evolution of grain boundaries and are interpreted through an extended Cahn-Taylor model., Competing Interests: Competing interests statement:The authors declare no competing interest.

Graphene is a two-dimensional carbon allotrope which exhibits exceptional properties, making it highly suitable for a wide range of applications. Practical graphene fabrication often yields a polycrystalline structure with many inherent defects, which significantly influence its performance. In this study, we utilize a Monte Carlo approach based on the optimized Wooten, Winer and Weaire (WWW) algorithm to simulate the crystalline domain coarsening process of polycrystalline graphene. Our sample configurations show excellent agreement with experimental data. We conduct statistical analyses of the bond and angle distribution, temporal evolution of the defect distribution, and spatial correlation of the lattice orientation that follows a stretched exponential distribution. Furthermore, we thoroughly investigate the diffusion behavior of defects and find that the changes in domain size follow a power-law distribution. We briefly discuss the possible connections of these results to (and differences from) domain growth processes in other statistical models, such as the Ising dynamics. We also examine the impact of buckling of polycrystalline graphene on the crystallization rate under substrate effects. Our findings may offer valuable guidance and insights for both theoretical investigations and experimental advancements.

The interactions between displacement cascades and three types of structures, dislocations, dislocation loops and grain boundaries, in BCC-Fe are investigated through molecular dynamics simulations. Wigner-Seitz analysis is used to calculate the number of point defects induced in order to illustrate the effects of three special structures on the displacement cascade. The displacement cascades in systems interacting with all three types of structure tend to generate more total defects compared to bulk Fe. The surviving number of point defects in the grain boundary case is the largest of the three types of structures. The changes in the atomic structures of dislocations, dislocation loops and grain boundaries after displacement cascades are analyzed to understand how irradiation damage affects them. These results could reveal irradiation damage at the microscale. Varied defect production numbers and efficiencies are investigated, which could be used as the input parameters for higher scale simulation.

Electrical characteristics with various program temperatures ( T PGM ) in three-dimensional (3-D) NAND flash memory are investigated. The cross-temperature conditions of the T PGM up to 120 °C and the read temperature ( T READ ) at 30 °C are used to analyze the influence of grain boundaries (GB) on the bit line current ( I BL ) and threshold voltage ( V T ). The V T shift in the E-P-E pattern is successfully decomposed into the charge loss (Δ V T,CL ) component and the poly-Si GB (Δ V T ,GB ) component. The extracted Δ V T ,GB increases at higher T PGM due to the reduced GB potential barrier. Additionally, the Δ V T ,GB is evaluated using the Technology Computer Aided Design (TCAD) simulation, depending on the GB position ( X GB ) and the bit line voltage ( V BL )., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.
