The capacity of environmental pollutants to generate oxidative stress is known to affect the development and progression of chronic diseases. This scientific review identifies previously published experimental studies using preclinical models of exposure to environmental stress agents, such as black carbon and/or RF-EMF, which produce cellular oxidative damage and can lead to different types of cell death. We summarize in vivo and in vitro studies, which are grouped according to the mechanisms and pathways of redox activation triggered by exposure to BC and/or EMF and leading to apoptosis, necrosis, necroptosis, pyroptosis, autophagy, ferroptosis and cuproptosis. The possible mechanisms are considered in relation to the organ, cell type and cellular-subcellular interaction with the oxidative toxicity caused by BC and/or EMF at the molecular level. The actions of these environmental pollutants, which affect everyday life, are considered separately and together in experimental preclinical models. However, for overall interpretation of the data, toxicological studies must first be conducted in humans, to enable possible risks to human health to be established in relation to the progression of chronic diseases. Objective: To characterize and describe clinical experience with childhood-onset non-infectious uveitis., Study Design: A multicenter retrospective multidisciplinary national web-based registry of 507 patients from 21 hospitals was analyzed. Cases were grouped as immune disease-associated (IMDu), idiopathic (IDIu) or ophthalmologically distinct. Characteristics of juvenile idiopathic arthritis-associated (non-HLA-B27-related) uveitis (JIAu), IDIu, and pars planitis (PP) were compared., Results: IMDu (62.3%) and JIAu (51.9%) predominated in young females; and IDIu (22.7%) and PP (13.6%) in older children, without sex imbalance. Ocular complications occurred in 45.3% of cases (posterior synechiae [28%], cataracts [16%], band keratopathy [14%], ocular hypertension [11%] and cystoid macular edema [10%]) and were associated with synthetic (86%) and biologic (65%) disease-modifying antirheumatic drug (DMARD) use. Subgroups were significantly associated ( p  < 0.05) with different characteristics. JIAu was typically anterior (98%), insidious (75%), in ANA-positive (69%), young females (82%) with fewer complications (31%), better visual outcomes, and later use of uveitis-effective biologics. In contrast, IDIu was characteristically anterior (87%) or panuveitic (12.1%), with acute onset (60%) and more complications at onset (59%: synechiae [31%] and cataracts [9.6%]) and less DMARD use, while PP is intermediate, and was mostly bilateral (72.5%), persistent (86.5%) and chronic (86.8%), with more complications (70%; mainly posterior segment and cataracts at last visit), impaired visual acuity at onset, and greater systemic (81.2%), subtenon (29.1%) and intravitreal (10.1%) steroid use., Conclusion: Prognosis of childhood uveitis has improved in the "biologic era," particularly in JIAu. Early referral and DMARD therapy may reduce steroid use and improve outcomes, especially in PP and IDIu.

This study investigates the fabrication and characterization of electrospun poly (ε-caprolactone)/poly (vinyl pyrrolidone) (PCL/PVP) fibers integrated with a nanocomposite of chitosan, silver nanocrystals, and graphene oxide (ChAgG), aimed at developing advanced wound dressing materials. The ChAgG nanocomposite, recognized for its antimicrobial and biocompatible properties, was incorporated into PCL/PVP fibers through electrospinning techniques. We assessed the resultant fibers' morphological, physicochemical, and mechanical properties, which exhibited significant enhancements in mechanical strength and demonstrated effective antimicrobial activity against common bacterial pathogens. The findings suggest that the PCL/PVP-ChAgG fibers maintain biocompatibility and facilitate controlled therapeutic delivery, positioning them as a promising solution for managing chronic and burn-related wounds. This study underscores the potential of these advanced materials to improve healing outcomes cost-effectively, particularly in settings plagued by high incidences of burn injuries. Metalloporphyrins based on open-shell transition metals, such as Ni(II), exhibit typically fast excited-state relaxation. In this work, we shed light into the nonradiative relaxation mechanism in a nanographene-Ni(II) porphyrin conjugate. Variable temperature transient absorption and global fit analysis are combined to produce a picture of the relaxation pathways. At room temperature, photoexcitation of the lowest π-π* transition is followed by vibrational cooling in 1.6 ps, setting a short 20 ps temporal window wherein a small fraction of relaxed singlets radiatively decay to the ground state before intersystem crossing proceeds. Following intersystem crossing, triplets relax rapidly to the ground state (S 0 ) in a few tens of picoseconds. By performing measurements at low temperature, we provide evidence for a competition between two terminal relaxation pathways from the lowest (metal-centered) triplet to the ground state: a slow ground state relaxation process proceeding in time scales beyond 1.6 ns and a faster pathway dictated by a sloped conical intersection, which is thermally accessible at room temperature from the triplet state. The overall triplet decay at a given temperature is dictated by the interplay of these two contributions. This observation bears significance in understanding the underlying fast relaxation processes in Ni-based molecules and related transition metal complexes, opening avenues for potential applications for energy harvesting and optoelectronics.

A biomarker is defined as a characteristic that is measured as an indicator of a normal biological or pathological process, a response to an exposure or intervention. Biomarkers with a diagnostic approach must identify not only the presence but also the absence of the disease with high precision, so having the biological source of the said marker is of vital importance to ensure precision and accuracy; the aim was to carry out a review of its diagnostic potential. The search strategy was carried out in three databases: PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Scopus. The keywords that were used were as follows: "gingival crevicular fluid", "Biomarker", and "Diagnosis", using the Boolean operator "AND". The filter was used at 10 years. Within the type of molecules most studied, the cytokine family was the most abundant with 25.42% of the studies, followed by metalloproteinases and proteins with 16.9% each one. Studies that included RNA-type genetic material were less frequently found. Introduction: Leishmaniasis, a chronic vector-borne disease caused by parasites of the genus Leishmania, presents diagnostic challenges. Conventional diagnostic methods struggle with accurate visualization of these parasites. Immunostaining with CD1a has demonstrated effectiveness in visualizing Leishmania parasites, particularly in the Old World. However, the application of CD1a immunostaining in Colombian leishmaniasis remains unexplored., Objective: To determine the utility of CD1a as an immunomarker in detecting chronic forms of tegumentary leishmaniasis., Materials and Methods: This proof-of-concept study involved 48 paraffin-embedded samples categorized into 3 groups: moderate-to-high parasite load (n = 15), low load (n = 15), and chronic granulomatous inflammation (n = 13); 5 samples diagnosed with cutaneous histoplasmosis. These samples were stained with the immunomarker CD1a clone EP3622 for comparative analysis. In addition, CD1a immunohistochemistry was compared with 18S rDNA qPCR and hematoxylin-eosin staining to evaluate its performance in relation to these established methods., Results: CD1a immunohistochemistry was positive in 46.51% of the samples evaluated. This immunomarker showed lower sensitivity and negative predictive value than 18S rDNA qPCR and hematoxylin-eosin staining; specificity and negative predictive value were consistent. Purpose: To examine the association between educational level and the presence of periodontal disease in adults ages ≥ 50 years in Mexico., Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 2098 Mexican adults, using data from the annual reports of the Epidemiological Monitoring System for Oral Pathologies from 2019-2022. Data were collected on sociodemographic characteristics such as gender, age, educational level, oral hygiene, and diabetes. Periodontal status was evaluated using the Community Periodontal Index (CPI) and was classified into: CPI &#61; 0 (healthy); CPI &#61; 1 (bleeding on probing); CPI &#61; 2 (calculus); and CPI &#61; 3 or 4 (pocket depth ≥ 4 mm). A multinomial regression model was used to estimate the odds ratio (OR) and the 95% confidence intervals (CI), using periodontal status as the result., Results: 39.9% of subjects presented periodontal pockets of ≥ 4 mm, 20.8% presented calculus, and 12.8% presented bleeding, while only 26.4% were classified as healthy. A low level of education (≤ 9 years) (OR &#61; 4.84; p 0.001), age ≥ 65 years (OR &#61; 1.33; p &#61; 0.025), poor oral hygiene (OR &#61; 6.86; p 0.001), smoking (OR &#61; 1.51; p &#61; 0.025), and diabetes (OR &#61; 1.73; p 0.001) were statistically significantly associated with the presence of periodontal pockets ≥ 4 mm., Conclusions: A low level of education is associated with worse periodontal status in adults aged 50 years or more. These findings reiterate the importance of implementing effective strategies and the incorporation of interventions for improving the access to and quality of services targeted at aging communities.

The consumption of fatty acids offers significant health benefits; however, they are prone to degradation by environmental factors. One method to preserve these fatty acids is the addition of synthetic antioxidants. This study focuses on the determination of peroxide and MDA formation rates at temperatures of 25 °C, 45 °C, and 65 °C. The oxidative stability of cold-pressed avocado oil was evaluated using pure astaxanthin, TBHQ, and H. pluvialis extract at concentrations of 100, 500, and 1000 ppm. Kinetic models and thermodynamic analysis were applied to determine the oxidation rate and compare the antioxidant effects of H. pluvialis extract with astaxanthin and TBHQ. The Arrhenius model was used to estimate activation energy (Ea), enthalpy, entropy, and free energy. Avocado oil with 500 ppm of H. pluvialis extract showed antioxidant effects comparable to TBHQ and pure astaxanthin. The activation energy of plain avocado oil was 40.47 kJ mol -1 , while with H. pluvialis extract, it was 54.35 kJ mol -1 . These findings suggest that H. pluvialis extract offers effective antioxidant properties and could serve as a natural alternative to synthetic antioxidants in food applications, despite the limitations of unprotected astaxanthin.

In this paper, we explore the effects of biological (pathological) and mechanical damage on bone tissue within a benchmark model. Using the Finite Element Methodology, we analyze and numerically test the model's components, capabilities, and performance under physiologically and pathologically relevant conditions. Our findings demonstrate the model's effectiveness in simulating bone remodeling processes and self-repair mechanisms for micro-damage induced by biological internal conditions and mechanical external ones within bone tissue. Highly emissive Ag 2 S nanocrystals (NCs) passivated with a gradated shell incorporating Se and Zn were synthesized in air, and the temperature dependence of their photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) was quantified in both organic and aqueous media at ∼1200 nm. The relevance of this parameter, measured at physiological temperatures, is highlighted for applications that rely on the near infrared (NIR) photoluminescence of NCs, such as deep NIR imaging or luminescence nanothermometry. Hyperspectral NIR imaging shows that Ag 2 S-based NCs with a PLQY in organic media of about 10% are inefficient for imaging at 40 °C through 20 mm thick tissue with low laser irradiation power densities. In contrast, water-transferred Ag 2 S-based NCs with an initial PLQY of 2% in water exhibit improved robustness against temperature changes, enabling improved imaging performance.

This study assessed the in vitro anthelmintic activity of ethyl acetate extract (Cn-EtOAc) and its bioactive fractions (CnR3 and CnR5) obtained from Chamaecrista nictitans aerial parts against two Haemonchus contortus (Hc) isolates, one resistant (strain HcIVM-R) and another susceptible (strain HcIVM-S) to ivermectin. Ferulic acid and p-coumaric acid were identified in the bioactive fractions; therefore, their commercial standards were also assessed. A colocalization analysis between the ferulic acid commercial standard and eggs of the HcIVM-R strain was performed using confocal laser scanning microscopy and the ImageJ program. The ovicidal effects of the Cn-EtOAc extract, bioactive fractions and commercial compounds were tested through the egg hatching inhibition (EHI) assay on H. contortus isolates HcIVM-R and HcIVM-S. The Cn-EtOAc caused 88 % and 92 % EHI at 5000 µg/mL on HcIVM-R and HcIVM-S, respectively. Fractions CnR3 and CnR5 displayed the highest ovicidal activity against HcIVM-S, with effective concentrations (EC 90 ) of 2134 and 601 µg/mL, respectively. Meanwhile, the commercial standards ferulic acid and p-coumaric acid also resulted in higher effectiveness on the same strain, with EC 90 of 57.5 and 51.1 µg/mL. A colocalization analysis of ferulic acid and eggs of HcIVM-R revealed that this compound is localized to the cuticle surface of the embryo inside the egg parasite. The results demonstrated that both ferulic and p-coumaric acids interrupt the egg-hatching processes of the two Hc isolates. Both phenolic acids isolated from C. nictitans and commercial standards exhibited the best anthelmintic effect on HcIVM-S. Objective: This systematic review aims to determine the effectiveness of dorsal root ganglion stimulation (DRGS) in chronic pain management., Methods: In 2023, a comprehensive systematic review was undertaken utilizing various electronic databases, employing MeSH terms and free search terms tailored to the study's aims. This review included primary research such as cohorts, case-control studies, and clinical trials, all focusing on the efficacy of DRGS in treating various chronic pain conditions. Nonhuman or animal studies were omitted from the selection process. A review of study quality was conducted, followed by a meticulous analysis of the findings to synthesize the evidence. This review represents the most current research, with updates extending to 2024. A total of 400 articles were reviewed. Twenty-nine articles were included in our review after meticulous screening., Results: Twenty-nine articles published in the last five years meeting selection criteria were identified, encompassing patients with various diagnoses warranting the use of DRGS beyond complex regional pain syndrome. Additionally, the analysis includes different outcome measurement tools, emphasizing improvements in pain management, functionality, and quality of life. Parasitological studies of long-term inter-annual variations provide more precise and reliable information about the biological structure of fish parasite communities, and constitute a reference data base for future studies. A total of 1103 blue sea catfish Ariopsis guatemalensis from a tropical eutrophic coastal lagoon were examined for parasites over a 22-year period (from May 2000 to October 2022), to test the hypothesis that parasite communities of this host, should exhibit greater variations in their structure and species composition mainly over long-term periods. Three species of monoxenous (single-host life cycle), and nine of heteroxenous (multi-host life cycle) parasites were identified. The results indicated that parasite species composition of this catfish has remained stable over a 22-years period. However, the community structure has registered notable changes over periods of several years, mainly due to the replacement of the numerically dominant species. Objective: Primary Hemifacial Spasm (PHFS) significantly impacts quality of life, necessitating effective treatment like microvascular decompression of the facial nerve. This study aims to identify prognostic factors related to surgical treatment to enhance outcomes and minimize complications. A systematic review of literature from the past five years was conducted., Methods: Following PRISMA guidelines, we systematically searched databases like PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Ovid, EBSCO, and Cochrane using keywords such as 'Hemifacial spasm,' 'Microvascular decompression,' 'Neurovascular conflict,' and 'Surgical techniques.' The search spanned January 2018 to November 2023. The 'Rayyan' program facilitated data compilation. Each author reviewed abstracts, applying inclusion criteria like systematic reviews, clinical trials, observational studies, and case series, while excluding theoretical or non-English articles., Results: Of 26 selected articles, those solely addressing PHFS treatment with botulinum toxin and lacking surgical procedure data were excluded. Thus, our analysis focused on 16 articles, including meta-analyses, systematic reviews, clinical trials, and observational studies., Discussion: Microvascular decompression at the cerebellar pontine angle is the mainstay treatment for hemifacial spasm. Despite limited statistically significant prognostic factors in the literature, overarching recommendations aim to improve outcomes, minimize complications, and prevent recurrences. Background: Patients with schizophrenia die decades earlier than the general population. Among the factors involved in this mortality gap, evidence suggests a telomere length shortening in this clinical population, which is associated with premature ageing. Recent studies support the use of strength-based training exercise programmes to maintain, or even elongate, telomere length in healthy elderly populations. However, studies aiming at modifying telomere length in severe mental illnesses, such as schizophrenia, are still very scarce., Aims: To investigate the effect of a strength-based physical exercise programme on the telomere length of individuals with schizophrenia., Method: We propose a pragmatic, randomised controlled trial including 40 patients aged ≥18 years, with a stable diagnosis of schizophrenia, attending the Complejo de Rehabilitación Psicosocial (CRPS, Psychosocial Rehabilitation Centre) in Salamanca, Spain. These patients will be randomly assigned (1:1) to either receive the usual treatment and rehabilitation programmes offered by CRPS (treatment-as-usual group) or these plus twice weekly sessions of an evidence-based, strength-based training exercise programme for 12 weeks (intervention group). The primary outcome will be effect on telomere length. Secondary outcomes will include impact on cognitive function, frailty and quality of life., Results: We expect to show the importance of implementing strength-based physical exercise programmes for patients with schizophrenia. We could find that such programmes induce biological and genetic changes that may lengthen life expectancy and decrease physical fragility., Conclusions: We anticipate that our trial findings could contribute to parity of esteem for mental health, reducing premature ageing in patients with severe mental illnesses, such as schizophrenia.

Hydrogels elaborated from Dasylirion spp. and enriched with grape seed extract (GSE) were investigated for tentative use in dental treatment. Cellulose-GSE hydrogels were elaborated with varying GSE contents from 10 to 50 wt%. The mechanical and physical properties, antimicrobial effect, biocompatibility, and in vitro cytotoxicity were studied. In all the cases, the presence of GSE affects the hydrogel's mechanical properties. The elongation decreased from 12.67 mm for the hydrogel without GSE to 6.33 mm for the hydrogel with the highest GSE content. The tensile strength decrease was from 52.33 N/mm 2 (for the samples without GSE) and went to 40 N/mm 2 for the highest GSE content. Despite the adverse effects, hydrogels possess suitable properties for manipulation. In addition, all hydrogels exhibited excellent biocompatibility and no cytotoxicity, and the antibacterial performance was demonstrated against S. mutans , E. Faecalis , S. aureus , and P. aureginosa . Furthermore, the hydrogels with 30 wt% GSE inhibited more than 90% of the bacterial growth.

Biofilm-producing methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and coagulase-negative staphylococci (MR-CoNS) pose clinical challenges in treating healthcare-associated infections. As alternative antimicrobial options are needed, in this study, we aimed to determine the effect of curcumin-chitosan magnetic nanoparticles (Cur-Chi-MNP) on the biofilms of staphylococcal clinical isolates. MRSA and CoNS clinical isolates were identified using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing was performed using the broth microdilutions. Nanoparticles were synthesized by the co-precipitation of magnetic nanoparticles (MNP) and encapsulated by the ionotropic gelation of curcumin (Cur) and chitosan (Chi). Biofilm inhibition and eradication by nanoparticles, with and without the addition of oxacillin (OXA), were assessed in Staphylococcus strains. Cur-Chi-MNP showed antimicrobial activity against planktonic cells of MRSA and MR-CoNS strains and inhibited MRSA biofilm. The addition of OXA to Cur-Chi-MNP increased the biofilm inhibition and eradication activity against all staphylococcal strains (P = 0.0007), and higher biofilm activity was observed in the early biofilm stages. Cur-Chi-MNP showed antimicrobial and biofilm inhibitory activities against S. aureus. Addition of OXA increased biofilm inhibition and eradication activity against all staphylococcal strains. A combination treatment of Cur-Chi-MNP and OXA could potentially be used to treat staphylococcal biofilm-associated infections in the early stages before the establishment of biofilm bacterial cells.

Upconversion nanohybrids (UCNHs) consisting of rose bengal (RB) and upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) are able to promote terpinene oxidation upon near-infrared irradiation. The photophysical events occurring upon NIR-irradiation of the UCNH correlate well with the synthetic protocol used to prepare the UCNHs (RB loading and aggregation). The clinical significance of Blastocystis sp. remains to be fully elucidated. This study assesses whether Blastocystis subtype diversity can affect the outcome of the infection and the occurrence of clinical manifestations in infected individuals. Stool samples from 219 Blastocystis-positive patients by PCR targeting the ssu rDNA gene were fully genotyped by Sanger sequencing analyses. Co-infections by other parasitic, viral, and bacterial enteropathogens were identified by molecular and culture methods. Sequence analyses revealed the presence of six Blastocystis subtypes including ST1 (21.5 %), ST2 (17.8 %), ST3 (29.7 %), ST4 (22.8 %), ST6 (5.5 %), and ST7 (2.3 %), with a single sample harbouring a ST1+ST3 co-infection (0.5 %). Multivariate risk factor analyses using logistic regression models indicated that neither Blastocystis subtypes nor patient-associated variables including sex, country of origin, travelling history, and presence of nonspecific symptoms were positively associated with a higher likelihood of developing gastrointestinal symptoms (abdominal pain and diarrhoea). However, being of a young age (p-value: 0.003) and experiencing skin pruritus (p-value < 0.001) and eosinophilia (p-value: 0.016) were found to increase the odds of presenting gastrointestinal symptoms. Background: Padel is a sport that requires a combination of physical and technical skills. Fatigue is a major modulator of padel players' performance. The aim of this study was to analyze the changes in neuromuscular performance and perceived effort among high-level padel players., Methods: Countermovement jump and handgrip strength of 58 participants (men: N.=38 age = 28.3±7.05 years, height = 178.9±8.41 cm; body mass = 75.25±8.2 kg. women: N.=21, age = 23.07±4.6 years, height = 163.86±10.34 cm; body mass = 59.9±6.13 kg) were assessed pre- and post-match in 43 official matches during the Padel Master 2021 of the Andalusian Padel Federation. Additionally, the Rating of Perceived Exertion (RPE) Scale was used to assess players' subjective perception of effort after each match., Results: Players experienced significant increases in postmatch jump height, with no changes in handgrip strength. Moreover, changes in jump height were greater in male players after the match when compared to their female counterparts, but the match duration was not determinant when comparing CMJ or handgrip between 2-sets and 3-sets matches. Finally, players reported a higher RPE after longer matches, but perceived effort was not different between sexes., Conclusions: These findings suggest that the internal load generated during competitive padel matches is insufficient to cause a declination in performance of the studied variables. It is also concluded that players' warm-up routines could be optimized to enhance neuromuscular performance at the start of matches.

Genomic imprinting, an epigenetic phenomenon leading to parent-of-origin-specific gene expression, has independently evolved in the endosperm of flowering plants and the placenta of mammals-tissues crucial for nurturing embryos. While transposable elements (TEs) frequently colocalize with imprinted genes and are implicated in imprinting establishment, direct investigations of the impact of de novo TE transposition on genomic imprinting remain scarce. In this study, we explored the effects of chemically induced transposition of the Copia element ONSEN on genomic imprinting in Arabidopsis thaliana. Through the combination of chemical TE mobilization and doubled haploid induction, we generated a line with 40 new ONSEN copies. Our findings reveal a preferential targeting of maternally expressed genes (MEGs) for transposition, aligning with the colocalization of H2A.Z and H3K27me3 in MEGs-both previously identified as promoters of ONSEN insertions. Additionally, we demonstrate that chemically-induced DNA hypomethylation induces global transcriptional deregulation in the endosperm, leading to the breakdown of MEG imprinting. This study provides insights into the consequences of chemically induced TE remobilization in the endosperm, revealing that chemically-induced epigenome changes can have long-term consequences on imprinted gene expression., (© The Author(s) 2024. Muscle functional MRI identifies changes in metabolic activity in each muscle and provides a quantitative index of muscle activation and damage. No previous studies have analyzed the hamstrings activation over a football match. This study aimed at detecting different patterns of hamstring muscles activation after a football game, and to examine inter- and intramuscular differences (proximal-middle-distal) in hamstring muscles activation using transverse relaxation time (T2)-weighted magnetic resonance images. Eleven healthy football players were recruited for this study. T2 relaxation time mapping-MRI was performed before (2 hours) and immediately after a match (on average 13 min). The T2 values of each hamstring muscle at the distal, middle, and proximal portions were measured. The primary outcome measure was the increase in T2 relaxation time value after a match. Linear mixed models were used to detect differences pre and postmatch. MRI examination showed that there was no obvious abnormality in the shape and the conventional T2 weighted signal of the hamstring muscles after a match. On the other hand, muscle functional MRI T2 analysis revealed that T2 relaxation time significantly increased at distal and middle portions of the semitendinosus muscle (p = 0.0003 in both cases). By employing T2 relaxation time mapping, we have identified alterations within the hamstring muscles being the semitendinosus as the most engaged muscle, particularly within its middle and distal thirds. Background: Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) is associated with a higher risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Pentoxifylline (PTF), a nonselective phosphodiesterase inhibitor with anti-inflammatory, antiproliferative, and antifibrotic actions, has demonstrated renal benefits in both clinical trials and meta-analyses. The present work aimed to study the effects of PTF on the progression of subclinical atherosclerosis (SA) in a population of patients with diabetes and moderate to severe chronic kidney disease (CKD)., Methods: In this open-label, randomized controlled, prospective single-center pilot study the evolution of carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) and ankle-brachial index (ABI) were determined in 102 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and CKD assigned to PTF, aspirin or control groups during 18 months. We also determined the variations in the levels of inflammatory markers and Klotho (KL), a protein involved in maintaining cardiovascular health, and their relationship with the progression of SA., Results: Patients treated with PTF presented a better evolution of CIMT, increased KL mRNA levels in peripheral blood cells (PBCs) and reduced the inflammatory state. The progression of CIMT values was inversely related to variations in KL both in serum and mRNA expression levels in PBCs. Multiple regression analysis demonstrated that PTF treatment and variations in mRNA KL expression in PBCs, together with changes in HDL, were significant determinants for the progression of CIMT (adjusted R 2  = 0.24, P < 0.001) independently of traditional risk factors. Background: Understanding individual ovarian hormone cycles and their relationship with health, performance and injuries is highly important to practitioners supporting female athletes. Venous blood sampling is the current gold standard for measuring the ovarian hormones, but the invasive nature of this method presents a major barrier in sport environments. Saliva analysis may offer an alternative method as it is non-invasive, allowing the sample to be collected " in situ ", with relative ease, necessary in applied sport environments., Objective: The aims of this study were: (i) To compare the concentration of progesterone between capillary blood and saliva, (ii) To assess the efficacy of weekly measurements of progesterone for determining if ovulation has occurred in elite eumenorrheic football players, and (iii) To establish a saliva criteria cut-off for establishing ovulation and assessing the sensitivity, specificity and accuracy values of the method., Methodology: Twenty-one professional and semi-professional, Spanish league female football players (18.6 ± 1.5 years, 58.1 ± 6.0 kg, 164.0 ± 4.8 cm) with natural menstrual cycles, completed the study. Capillary blood and saliva samples were collected from each participant on twelve occasions each separated by at least 7 days. All samples were collected in the morning, following an overnight fast., Results: According to luteal phase serum progesterone concentrations, 11 out of 21 (52%) players presented with menstrual irregularities (oligomenorrheic n  = 6, anovulatory n  = 4, amenorrhoeic n  = 1). A significant correlation was observed between plasma and saliva progesterone in the estimated eumenorrheic group ( r  = 0.80, p  = <0.001, 95% CI 0.72-0.86). The association between serum and saliva progesterone was weaker in the oligomenorrheic group ( r  = 0.47, p  = <0.001, 95% CI 0.27-0.64) and was not present in the anovulatory or amenorrhoeic groups., Conclusions: Salivary measurements of progesterone are well correlated with capillary blood when taken during eumenorrheic menstrual cycles and presents a viable, non-invasive method of establishing characteristic progesterone fluctuations in applied sport settings. The strength of the association appears to be concentration dependent. Gastrointestinal microorganism resistance and dissemination are increasing, partly due to international travel. This study investigated gastrointestinal colonisations and the acquisition of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) genes among international travellers moving between Spain and low- and middle-income countries (Peru and Ethiopia). We analysed 102 stool samples from 51 volunteers collected before and after travel, revealing significantly higher rates of colonisation by both bacteria and protists upon return. Diarrhoeagenic strains of E. coli were the most notable microorganism detected using RT-PCR with the Seegene Allplex™ Gastrointestinal Panel Assays. A striking prevalence of β-lactamase resistance genes, particularly the TEM gene, was observed both before and after travel. No significant differences in AMR genes were found between the different locations. These findings highlight the need for rigorous surveillance and preventive strategies, as travel does not significantly impact AMR gene acquisition but does affect microbial colonisations. This study provides valuable insights into the intersection of gastrointestinal microorganism acquisition and AMR in international travellers, underscoring the need for targeted interventions and increased awareness.

Background and objectives : The development of the oral microbiome begins in the prenatal stage. Breast milk contains antimicrobial proteins, microorganisms, metabolites, enzymes, and immunoglobulins, among others; therefore, differences have been noted in the type of microorganisms that colonize the oral cavity of children who are breastfed compared to those who are formula-fed. Our objective was to establish the relationship between breastfeeding, formula feeding, or mixed feeding (breastfeeding and formula) with the presence of S. mutans in a population of children under 6 months of age. Materials and Methods : The patients were recruited from the Child Care Center of Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, and from the pediatric dentistry postgraduate clinics of the Autonomous University of Ciudad Juárez; children exclusively fed maternally, with formula, and/or mixed were included. Those who had been fed within the previous hour were excluded. The sample was taken with a smear of the jugal groove using a sterile micro-brush. For the identification of Streptococcus mutans , a culture of Mitis Salivarius Agar (Millipore) was used. Results : 53.3% corresponded to females and 46.7% to males, 36.7% corresponded to maternal feeding, 23.3% corresponded to formula feeding, and 40% corresponded to mixed feeding. In 90% of the infants, the parents indicated that they did not perform oral hygiene. The CFU count showed that infants who were exclusively breastfed had an average of 9 × 10 CF/mL, formula-fed infants had an average of 78 × 10 CFU/mL, and those who had mixed feeding 21 × 10 CFU/mL. Conclusions : According to the results obtained, it was possible to corroborate that exclusive breastfeeding limits the colonization of Streptococcus mutans compared to those infants who receive formula or mixed feeding; these results could have a clinical impact on the dental health of infants by having a lower presence of one of the main etiological factors involved in dental caries and the type of microbiome established in the oral cavity.

Cyclic acid anhydride is a not very widespread structure in nature, but with a determining role in natural products possessing this functionality in their skeleton. To the best of our knowledge, no revision of terpenes containing cyclic anhydrides has been previously reported. The result was that more than 100 terpenic cyclic anhydrides and related compounds were found to be in need of being reported. This review has been systematically organized by terpene skeletons, from the smallest to largest, describing their sources and bioactivities. In addition, different biosynthetic pathways for their final oxidations, namely, routes A, B and C, leading to the formation of these heterocyclic natural products, have been proposed. We have also included the most plausible precursors of these natural products, which mostly happened to be present in the same natural source. Some molecules derived from terpene cyclic anhydrides, such as their natural imide derivatives, have also been described due to their significant biological activity. In this sense, special attention has been paid to cantharidin because of its historical relevance and its broad bioactivity. A plausible biosynthesis of cantharidin has been proposed for the first time. Finally, cyclic anhydride structures that were firstly assigned as anhydrides and later corrected have been also described.

The Spanish Society of Tropical Medicine and International Health (SEMTSI), the Spanish Society of Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology (SEIMC), the Spanish Society of Emergency Medicine (SEMES), the Spanish Society of Primary Care Physicians (SEMERGEN) and the Spanish Society of Family and Community Medicine (SEMFYC) have prepared a consensus statement on the diagnosis and management of patients with imported febrile illnesses. Twenty authors with different backgrounds and representing different healthcare perspectives (ambulatory primary care, travel and tropical medicine specialists, emergency medicine, hospital care, microbiology and parasitology and public health), identified 39 relevant questions, which were organised in 7 thematic blocks. After a systematic review of the literature and a thoughtful discussion, the authors prepared 125 recommendations, as well as several tables and figures to be used as a consulting tool. Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) are enzymes that belong to the neuromuscular cholinergic system, their main function is to hydrolyze the neurotransmitter acetylcholine (ACh), through their hydrolysis these enzymes regulate the neuronal and neuromuscular cholinergic system. They have recently attracted considerable attention due to the discovery of new enzymatic and nonenzymatic functions. These discoveries have aroused the interest of numerous scientists, consolidating the relevance of this group of enzymes. Recent investigations have revealed a positive correlation between several risk factors for metabolic syndrome (MetS) and the expression of cholinesterases (ChE's), which underscore the impact of high ChE's activity on the pro-inflammatory state associated with MetS. In addition, the excessive hydrolysis of ACh and other choline esters (succinylcholine, propionylcholine, butyrylcholine, etc.) by both ChE's results in the overproduction of fatty acid precursor metabolites, which facilitate the synthesis of very low-density lipoproteins and triacylglycerols. Participation in these processes may represent the link between ChE's and metabolic disorders. However, further scientific research is required to fully elucidate the involvement of ChE's in metabolic diseases. A 81-year-old woman with a history of mild chronic heart failure and invasive lobular breast carcinoma pT2N0M0 diagnosed in 2009 and treated by mastectomy, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and adjuvant endocrine therapy with letrozole until 2016. Since then the patient has been disease-free. She presented to the Emergency Room in April 2023 due to severe postprandial epigastric pain and a 7 kg weight loss in the last 3 months. Abdominal computed tomography was performed showing thickening of the gastric antrum and proximal duodenum walls, peritoneal implants and ascites that suggested primary gastric tumor or lymphoma as the first possibility. An endoscopic ultrasound was schedule, performing a biopsy of the gastric lesion and placing a Hot-Axios® stent. The sample showed infiltration by lobular breast carcinoma CK7 (+), CK20 (-), CDX2 (-), GATA3 (+) GCDFP15 (+) RE (+) RP (-) HER2 (-). Treatment with capecitabine was started, with which it continues currently.

Niche selection and microbial dispersal are key factors that shape microbial communities. However, their relative significance varies across different environments and spatiotemporal scales. While most studies focus on the impact of these forces on community composition, few consider other structural levels such as the physiological stage of the microbial community and single-cell characteristics. To understand the relative influence of microbial dispersal and niche selection on various community structural levels, we concurrently examined the taxonomic composition, abundance and single-cell characteristics of bacterioplankton in an acidic reservoir (El Sancho, Spain) during stratification and mixing periods. A cluster analysis based on environmental variables identified five niches during stratification and one during mixing. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) revealed that communities within each niche differed in both, taxonomic and single-cell characteristics. The environmental variables that explained the variation in class-based ordination differed from those explaining the ordination based on single-cell characteristics. However, a Procrustes analysis indicated a high correlation between the CCA ordinations based on both structural levels, suggesting simultaneous changes in the microbial community at multiple structural levels. Introduction: Phthalates, or dieters of phthalic acid, are a ubiquitous type of plasticizer used in a variety of common consumer and industrial products. They act as endocrine disruptors and are associated with increased risk for several diseases. Once in the body, phthalates are metabolized through partially known mechanisms, involving phase I and phase II enzymes., Objective: In this study we aimed to identify common single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and copy number variants (CNVs) associated with the metabolism of phthalate compounds in children through genome-wide association studies (GWAS)., Methods: The study used data from 1,044 children with European ancestry from the Human Early Life Exposome (HELIX) cohort. Ten phthalate metabolites were assessed in a two-void pooled urine collected at the mean age of 8 years. Six ratios between secondary and primary phthalate metabolites were calculated. Genome-wide genotyping was done with the Infinium Global Screening Array (GSA) and imputation with the Haplotype Reference Consortium (HRC) panel. PennCNV was used to estimate copy number variants (CNVs) and CNVRanger to identify consensus regions. GWAS of SNPs and CNVs were conducted using PLINK and SNPassoc, respectively. Subsequently, functional annotation of suggestive SNPs (p-value < 1E-05) was done with the FUMA web-tool., Results: We identified four genome-wide significant (p-value < 5E-08) loci at chromosome (chr) 3 (FECHP1 for oxo-MiNP&#95;oh-MiNP ratio), chr6 (SLC17A1 for MECPP&#95;MEHHP ratio), chr9 (RAPGEF1 for MBzP), and chr10 (CYP2C9 for MECPP&#95;MEHHP ratio). Moreover, 115 additional loci were found at suggestive significance (p-value < 1E-05). Two CNVs located at chr11 (MRGPRX1 for oh-MiNP and SLC35F2 for MEP) were also identified. Functional annotation pointed to genes involved in phase I and phase II detoxification, molecular transfer across membranes, and renal excretion., Conclusion: Through genome-wide screenings we identified known and novel loci implicated in phthalate metabolism in children. Background and Objective: The high incidence of nodular thyroid pathology has led to growing concern about the economic impact that this pathology represents on the healthcare system. There are conclusive data about the cost-effectiveness of high-resolution units for nodular thyroid pathology; however, their implementation is not homogeneous in the Endocrinology and Nutrition services of our country. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the economic impact of the implementation of the high-resolution thyroid nodule unit (HRTNU) in our center., Patients and Methods: The present work is a prospective, observational and descriptive study carried out in 1314 patients (82% women, mean age 58 years ds = 11) evaluated at the HRTNU during the period of August 2022-August 2023. Demographic data (age and sex) were analyzed, referral center and consultation type, number of total consultations and neck ultrasound performed, number of fine needle aspiration (FNAB) performed, and cytology results were analyzed., Results: In the period from August 2022 to August 2023, a total of 1314 patients were evaluated (neck ultrasound and clinical consultation) and a total of 133 FNAB were performed, of which only 2.26% were non-diagnostic. Compared to the percentage of unsatisfactory FNAB from the previous year August 2021-July 2022 of 25%, a mean saving of 9931.43 euros was estimated. 84.47% of the patients evaluated for the first time by the HRTNU were discharged, estimating a mean saving of 133,200 euros., Conclusions: The implementation of a HRTNU at the Endocrinology and Nutrition departments, coordinated with primary and specialized care, is a cost-effectiveness alternative, as it reduces the number of medical consultations and is accompanied by a higher rate of diagnostic FNAB., (Copyright © 2024 SEEN and SED. Background: Colorectal cancer is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, with chemotherapy being a crucial treatment despite its significant side effects, such as chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN). Physical exercise has shown potential benefits in mitigating these side effects and improving patients' overall well-being. Objective: This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of a strength exercise program in reducing CIPN in patients with colorectal cancer undergoing chemotherapy, along with secondary objectives including impacts on quality of life, body mass index, oxygen consumption, anxiety and depression, fatigue, sleep quality, and various analytical parameters. Methods: A double-blind randomized controlled trial was conducted with 44 participants, divided into an intervention group (supervised resistance training twice a week and home exercises) and a control group (home exercises only). The primary outcome measure was CIPN, assessed using the EORTC QLQ-CIPN20 questionnaire. Secondary outcomes included assessments using the EORTC QLQ-C30, the 6-minute walk test, HADS, FACT-F, and MISS, along with various blood parameters. Results and Conclusions: The study will provide insights into the effectiveness of physical exercise in managing CIPN and improving various health parameters in colorectal cancer patients. By developing tailored exercise protocols, this research aims to enhance patient quality of life, optimize treatment outcomes, and reduce the incidence of debilitating side effects, thereby supporting the integration of physical exercise into standard oncological care.

Background: Programmed cell death ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression in non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC) is a crucial factor in predicting responses to immunotherapy. This systematic review and meta-analysis focuses on the prevalence of PD-L1 expression and clinicopathological features among Hispanic/Latino (H/L) populations., Methods: Embase, LILACS, Medline, and Virtual Health Library were searched for studies that evaluated the prevalence of PD-L1 in H/L patients. The protocol was submitted to PROSPERO with ID CRD42023488547. We employed the Joanna Briggs Institute Checklist for Systematic Reviews and Research Syntheses to assess the methodological quality and applicability of the included studies. Meta-analyses were done to determine the prevalence using a random effects model., Results: The meta-analysis, encompassing 21 articles with 16,486, revealed that 80.2% of patients had PD-L1 expression data available (n=13,222). The prevalence calculated of PD-L1 expression in Latino NSCLC patients was 55% [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.54-0.55], with 31% (95% CI: 0.27-0.36) showing a tumoral proportion score (TPS) of 1-49%, and 23% (95% CI: 0.16-0.30) registering a TPS ≥50%. Higher expression was observed in male gender, smoking, adenocarcinoma subtypes, poor tumor differentiation, and advanced stages. PD-L1 expression was most frequent in EGFR wild-type status (82.5%) with a odds ratio (OR) 1.54 (95% CI: 1.24-1.92) and PD-L1 expression was associated with ALK positive (OR =1.54; 95% CI: 1.24-1.92)., Conclusions: This meta-analysis provides a comprehensive overview of PD-L1 expression in NSCLC in the H/L population. The findings underscore the significant prevalence of PD-L1 expression and emphasize the relevance of immunotherapy in this population. Objective: To identify published research on the Shock Index (SI) in patients with septic shock or severe sepsis and to describe its main findings and conclusions., Design: Systematic review of the literature following the recommendations of the PRISMA protocol (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses)., Settings: The following databases were consulted: Pubmed, Embase, Library Cochrane and Lilacs., Patients: Patients older than 14 years with septic shock. Pregnant women and population with COVID-19 were excluded., Interventions: Studies reporting measurement of the shock index or its modified variants., Main Variables of Interest: Absolute frequencies and relative frequencies were assessed with measures of central tendency and dispersion. Effect estimators (OR, RR and HR) were extracted according to the context of each study., Results: Seventeen articles were included, of which 11 investigated the SI as a predictor of mortality. Seven of them found significant differences in the SI when comparing survivors to non-survivors and observed a relationship between the SI evolution and clinical outcomes. Additional research evidenced a relation between the Modified Shock Index and myocardial depression, as well as mortality. Furthermore, they identified a relationship between the Diastolic Shock Index, the dose of administered dobutamine, and mortality., Conclusions: The results suggest that both the SI and its modified versions, particularly in serial assessments, can be considered for evaluating patient prognosis. Forty-five accessions of the genus Phaseolus from the orthodox seed collection of the National Center for Genetic Resources (CNRG) of the National Institute of Forestry, Agricultural, and Livestock Research (INIFAP) of Mexico were sequenced using RADseq. The species utilized were: P. acutifolius (14), P. coccineus (12), P. lunatus (8), P. dumosus (6), P. leptostachyus (2), P. filiformis (2), and P. vulgaris (1). A variant call file (VCF) was generated using GATK with the P. vulgaris reference genome GCF&#95;000499845.1, identifying 97,103 shared SNPs among the species. These data have the potential to be used for studies of genetic diversity intra and interspecies, phylogeny, evolution, genetic resource conservation, and agricultural improvement., (© 2024 The Author(s).)

The primary objective of this investigation was to synthesize a resin incorporating nanoparticles of hydroxyapatite and silver (HA-NpsAg) to enhance biocompatibility and antimicrobial efficacy, thereby facilitating potential implementation within the dental industry. These enhancements aim to ensure reliable, durable, functional, and aesthetically pleasing restorations while concurrently reducing susceptibility to bacterial colonization within the oral cavity. Hydroxyapatite powders were prepared using the sol-gel method and doped with silver nanoparticles obtained by chemical reduction. The crystalline amorphous calcium phosphate powder had a particle size of 279 nm, and the silver nanoparticles had an average diameter of 26.5 nm. Resin spheres containing HA-NpsAg (RHN) were then synthesized at two concentrations (0.5% and 1%) by dissolving the initial monomer mixture in tetrahydrofuran. Subsequent antimicrobial evaluations were conducted via agar diffusion and turbidimetry, employing three strains of Gram-negative bacteria ( E. coli , K. oxytoca , and P. aeruginosa ) and three strains of Gram-positive bacteria ( S. mutans , S. aureus , and B. subtilis ). The findings revealed that P. aeruginosa exhibited maximum susceptibility to RHN powder at a concentration of 0.5%, while RHN powder at 1% concentration demonstrated maximal inhibition against S. aureus and S. mutans. Overall, our study highlights the successful synthesis of a dental resin with hydroxyapatite and silver nanoparticles, exhibiting bactericidal properties at low silver concentrations. These findings hold promise for enhancing dental materials with improved antimicrobial efficacy and clinical performance.

The cefazolin inoculum effect (CzIE) has been associated with poor clinical outcomes in patients with MSSA infections. We aimed to investigate the point prevalence of the CzIE among nasal colonizing MSSA isolates from ICU patients in a multicenter study in Colombia (2019-2023). Patients underwent nasal swabs to assess for S. aureus colonization on admission to the ICU and some individuals had follow-up swabs. We performed cefazolin MIC by broth-microdilution using standard and high-inoculum and developed a modified nitrocefin-based rapid test to detect the CzIE. Whole genome sequencing was carried out to characterize BlaZ types and allotypes, phylogenomics and Agr-typing. All swabs were subjected to 16S-rRNA metabarcoding sequencing to evaluate microbiome characteristics associated with the CzIE. A total of 352 patients were included; 46/352 (13%) patients were colonized with S. aureus; 22% (10/46) and 78% (36/46) with MRSA and MSSA, respectively. Among 36 patients that contributed with 43 MSSA colonizing isolates, 21/36 (58%) had MSSA exhibiting the CzIE. BlaZ type A and BlaZ-2 were the predominant type and allotype in 56% and 52%, respectively. MSSA belonging to CC30 were highly associated with the CzIE and SNP analyses supported transmission of MSSA exhibiting the CzIE among some patients of the same unit. The modified nitrocefin rapid test had 100%, 94.4% and 97.7% sensitivity, specificity and accuracy, respectively. We found a high prevalence point prevalence of the CzIE in MSSA colonizing the nares of critically-ill patients in Colombia. A modified rapid test was highly accurate in detecting the CzIE in this patient population.

Background: Motor and intellectual disabilities (MIDs) represent a great challenge for maintaining general health due to physical and cognitive limitations, particularly in the maintenance and preservation of oral health. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have emerged as a promising therapeutic tool for bacterial control, including oral biofilms; however, knowledge of the bactericidal effectiveness of oral biofilms from patients with MIDs is insufficient. This study aims to determine the antimicrobial effect of AgNPs on different oral biofilms taken from patients with and without MIDs., Methods: Two sizes of AgNPs were prepared and characterized by dynamic light scattering (DLS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Through consecutive sampling, biofilm samples were collected from 17 subjects with MIDs and 20 subjects without disorders. The antimicrobial effect was determined by obtaining the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of AgNPs, and the identification and distribution of oral bacterial species were determined by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Finally, correlations between sociodemographic characteristics and the antimicrobial levels of AgNPs were also explored. The values of the MIC results were analyzed with IBM-SPSS software (version25) using non-parametric tests for independent groups and correlations, with statistical significance being considered as p < 0.05., Results: Both sizes of AgNPs exhibited tight particle size distributions (smaller: 10.2 ± 0.7 nm; larger: 29.3 ± 2.3 nm) with zeta potential values (-35.0 ± 3.3 and -52.6 ± 8.5 mV, respectively) confirming the stability that resulted in little to no agglomeration of nanoparticles. Although both sizes of AgNPs had good antimicrobial activity in all oral biofilms, the smallest particles had the best antimicrobial effects on the oral biofilm samples from patients with and without MIDs, even better than chlorhexidine (CHX) ( p < 0.05). Likewise, the patients with disabilities showed higher levels of antimicrobial sensitivity to AgNPs compared with CHX ( p < 0.05). Although the microorganisms included in the biofilms of females had a statistically higher growth level, the AgNP antimicrobial effect was statistically similar in both genders ( p > 0.05). The most frequent bacteria for all oral biofilms were S. mutans (100%), P. intermedia (91.6%), T. forsythia (75.0%), T. denticola (75.0%), P. gingivalis (66.6%), F. nucleatum (66.6%), S. sobrinus (50.0%), and A. actinomycetemcomitans (8.3%)., Conclusions: AgNPs exhibited considerable antimicrobial potential to be used as a complementary and alternative tool in maintaining and preserving oral health in patients with MIDs.

The COVID-19 pandemic was an unprecedented global event in recent history. Beginning with an initial outbreak in Wuhan, China, in December 2019, the virus spread rapidly across the globe, causing millions of deaths and triggering an unprecedented health, economic, and social crisis. The initial response to the outbreak in many countries was the implementation of social distancing measures, including the closure of schools and businesses, the cancellation of mass events, and the banning of travel. These measures were aimed at reducing the virus' spread and preventing health systems from being overwhelmed by the numerous severe COVID-19 cases. However, these measures also had a devastating economic impact, especially on precarious workers and freelancers, as well as those who were unable to work from home. As the pandemic (also considered a syndemic or synergistic epidemic ) dragged on, countries adopted more flexible approaches to dealing with the virus, adopting mitigation measures rather than social distancing measures. These included the use of masks, testing and contact tracing, and the opening of businesses and schools with the implementation of additional safety measures. Using humor as a caregiving strategy can help professionals perceive daily and work-related events from a more optimistic and light-hearted perspective. The main objective of this study was to analyze humor styles among health care professionals. A cross-sectional and correlational design was employed. Data were collected using the Humor Styles Questionnaire, which measures four humor styles: affiliative, self-enhancing, aggressive, and self-defeating humor. Health care professionals scored higher in positive humor than negative humor. Age exhibited a negative correlation with positive humor. Significant differences were observed between marital status and affiliative and self-enhancing humor, professional category and hospital unit with aggressive humor, shift work and self-enhancing humor, and type of contract and experience with affiliative humor. Health care professionals employ various humor styles based on their social and work contexts. Abstract: Perianal ulcers (PAUs) related to antihemorrhoidal product use have been recently reported in the literature through a few case reports. However, other etiologies of PAU must be ruled out, including infectious disease, inflammatory disease, malignancy, pressure injuries, radiotherapy, and other topical drugs. In this report, the authors describe two cases of PAUs due to an antihemorrhoidal ointment. In case 1, a 68-year-old woman with a history of hemorrhoids presented with PAUs after using an antihemorrhoidal ointment for 2 months. The ulcers were assessed through a histopathologic study and treated with calcium alginate dressings, with complete re-epithelialization occurring after 2 months. In case 2, a 58-year-old woman with a history of hemorrhoids developed painful PAUs while using an antihemorrhoidal ointment for 2 months. No other probable cause was found, and the ulcers were treated by discontinuing the ointment. Diabetes and derived complications, especially diabetic nephropathy and neuropathy annually cause great morbimortality worldwide. 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) acts as a modulator of renal sympathetic input and vascular tone. In this line, 5-HT 2 receptor blockade has been linked with reduced incidence and progression of diabetic microvascular alterations. In this work, we aimed to determine, in diabetic rats, whether 5-HT 2 blockade ameliorates renal function and to characterize the serotonergic modulatory action on renal sympathetic neurotransmission. Diabetes was induced in male Wistar rats by alloxan administration (150 mg/kg, s.c.), and sarpogrelate (30 mg/kg·day, p.o.; 5-HT 2 antagonist) was administered for 14 days (DM-S). Normoglycemic and diabetic (DM) animals were maintained as aged-matched controls. At 28th day, DM-S animals were anesthetized and prepared for the in situ autoperfusion of the kidney. Renal vasoconstrictor responses were induced electrically or by i.a. noradrenaline (NA) administration. The role of 5-HT and selective 5-HT agonist/antagonist were studied on these renal vasopressor responses. Sarpogrelate treatment decreased renal sympathetic-induced vasopressor responses, reduced renal hypertrophy and kidney damage markers increased in DM. Intraarterial 5-HT inhibited the sympathetic-induced renal vasoconstrictions, effect reproduced by 5-CT, AS-19, L-694,247 and LY 344864 (5-HT 1/5/7 , 5-HT 7 , 5-HT 1D and 5-HT 1F receptor agonists, respectively). Blocking 5-HT 1D/1F/7 receptors completely abolished the 5-CT sympatho-inhibition. NA vasoconstrictions were not altered by any of the 5-HT agonists tested. A total of 366 individuals of Lutjanus argentiventris (Peters, 1869) were collected over a 5-yr period (October 2018 to June 2022) from Acapulco Bay, Mexico. Parasite communities in Lutjanus argentiventris were quantified and analyzed to determine the main factors that generate changes in species richness and/or species composition over time. The digeneans and copepods were the best-represented parasite groups. The parasite communities were characterized by a high numerical dominance of ectoparasites, mainly isopod larvae. Species richness at the component community level (9-23 species) was similar to the reported richness in other Lutjanus spp. The parasite communities of Lutjanus argentiventris exhibited high variability in species composition, suggesting that each parasite species may respond differently to environmental changes. However, the species richness and diversity were fairly stable over time; therefore, a clear pattern of interannual variation was not observed. Variations in the community structure probably were due to factors such as host traits (e.g., feeding behavior and body size), and possible interannual differences in environmental factors amplified by the occurrence of the anomalous event of La Niña., (© American Society of Parasitologists 2024.)

Purpose: There is a lack of evidence for treatment of some conditions including complication management, suboptimal initial weight loss, recurrent weight gain, or worsening of a significant obesity complication after one anastomosis gastric bypass (OAGB). This study was designed to respond to the existing lack of agreement and to provide a valuable resource for clinicians by employing an expert-modified Delphi consensus method., Methods: Forty-eight recognized bariatric surgeons from 28 countries participated in the modified Delphi consensus to vote on 64 statements in two rounds. An agreement/disagreement among ≥ 70.0% of the experts was regarded to indicate a consensus., Results: A consensus was achieved for 46 statements. For recurrent weight gain or worsening of a significant obesity complication after OAGB, more than 85% of experts reached a consensus that elongation of the biliopancreatic limb (BPL) is an acceptable option and the total bowel length measurement is mandatory during BPL elongation to preserve at least 300-400 cm of common channel limb length to avoid nutritional deficiencies. Also, more than 85% of experts reached a consensus on conversion to Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) with or without pouch downsizing as an acceptable option for the treatment of persistent bile reflux after OAGB and recommend detecting and repairing any size of hiatal hernia during conversion to RYGB., Conclusion: While the experts reached a consensus on several aspects regarding revision/conversion surgeries after OAGB, there are still lingering areas of disagreement. This highlights the importance of conducting further studies in the future to address these unresolved issues., (© 2024. Objectives: The aim of this study is to compare the aesthetic outcomes of metal porcelain (C), lithium disilicate (T1) and porcelain-layered zirconium (T2) immediate implant-supported single crowns in the anterior maxilla., Materials and Methods: Forty-five immediate dental implants were provided for 45 patients that required the extraction of a single tooth in the anterior maxilla. A temporary prosthesis was provided at 8 weeks after placement followed by the final prosthesis at 24 weeks post-implantation. The patients were randomly allocated into 3 groups: 15 patients in the control group (C) received a metal-porcelain restoration, 15 patients (T1) received a lithium disilicate (LD) restoration and 15 patients (T2) received a porcelain-layered, zirconium (Z) restoration. Pink (PES) and White (WES) esthetic scores, radiographic bone levels, periodontal parameters and patient's esthetic satisfaction using a visual analogue scale (VAS) were evaluated at the time of final restoration placement (t0) and at 12-months post-loading (t12)., Results: No implants were lost during the duration of this study. Statistically significant higher WES and VAS scores (p < 0.05) were recorded in T1 vs C and T1 vs T2 groups respectively. Similar radiographic bone levels and periodontal parameters were recorded in all groups., Conclusion: Within the limitations of this study, it was concluded that T1 restorations provided better WES outcomes when compared to C restorations and better VAS scores when compared to T2 restorations at 12 months post-loading.
