Background: Selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) are increasingly gaining attention due to its characteristics of low toxicity, high activity, and stability. Additionally, Bacillus licheniformis, as a probiotic, has achieved remarkable research outcomes in diverse fields such as medicine, feed processing, and pesticides, attracting widespread attention. Consequently, evaluating the activity of probiotics and SeNPs is paramount. The utilization of probiotics to synthesize SeNPs, achieving large-scale industrialization, is a current hotspot in the field of SeNPs synthesis and is currently the most promising synthetic method. To minimize production costs and maximize yield of SeNPs, this study selected agricultural by-products that are nutrient-rich, cost-effective, and readily available as culture medium components. This approach not only fulfills industrial production requirements but also mitigates the impact on downstream processes., Results: The experimental findings revealed that SeNPs synthesized by B. licheniformis F1 exhibited a spherical morphology with diameters ranging from 110 to 170 nm and demonstrating high stability. Both the secondary metabolites of B. licheniformis F1 and the synthesized SeNPs possessed significant free radical scavenging ability. To provide a more robust foundation for acquiring large quantities of SeNPs via fermentation with B. licheniformis F1, key factors were identified through single-factor experiments and response surface methodology (RSM) include a 2% seed liquid inoculum, a temperature of 37 ℃, and agitation at 180 rpm. Additionally, critical factors during the optimization process were corn powder (11.18 g/L), soybean meal (10.34 g/L), and NaCl (10.68 g/L). Upon validating the optimized conditions and culture medium, B. licheniformis F1 can synthesize nearly 100.00% SeNPs from 5 mmol/L sodium selenite. Subsequently, pilot-scale verification in a 5 L fermentor using the optimized medium resulted in a shortened fermentation time, significantly reducing production costs., Conclusion: In this study, the efficient production of SeNPs by the probiotic B. licheniformis F1 was successfully achieved, leading to a significant reduction in fermentation costs. Tuning the properties of a pair of entangled electron and hole in a light-induced exciton is a fundamentally intriguing inquiry for quantum science. Here, using semiconducting hybrid perovskite as an exploratory platform, we discover that Nd 2+ -doped CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 (MAPbI 3 ) perovskite exhibits a Kondo-like exciton-spin interaction under cryogenic and photoexcitation conditions. The feedback to such interaction between excitons in perovskite and the localized spins in Nd 2+ is observed as notably prolonged carrier lifetimes measured by time-resolved photoluminescence, ~10 times to that of pristine MAPbI 3 without Nd 2+ dopant. From a mechanistic standpoint, such extended charge separation states are the consequence of the trap state enabled by the antiferromagnetic exchange interaction between the light-induced exciton and the localized 4 f spins of the Nd 2+ in the proximity. Importantly, this Kondo-like exciton-spin interaction can be modulated by either increasing Nd 2+ doping concentration that enhances the coupling between the exciton and Nd 2+ 4 f spins as evidenced by elongated carrier lifetime, or by using an external magnetic field that can nullify the spin-dependent exchange interaction therein due to the unified orientations of Nd 2+ spin angular momentum, thereby leading to exciton recombination at the dynamics comparable to pristine MAPbI 3 ., (© 2024. About 20% of breast cancer patients are positive for HER2. The efficacy of current treatments is limited by primary and secondary resistance to trastuzumab. tRNA-derived fragments (tRFs) have shown crucial regulatory roles in various cancers. This study aimed to evaluate the role of tRF-27 in regulating the resistance of HER2-positive breast cancer against trastuzumab. tRF-27 was highly expressed in trastuzumab-resistant cells, and its expression level could predict the resistance to trastuzumab. High expression of tRF-27 promoted the growth and proliferation of trastuzumab-exposed cells. RNA-pulldown assay and mass spectrometry were performed to identify Ras GTPase-activating protein-binding proteins 1 and 2 (G3BPs) (two proteins targeted by tRF-27 ); RNA-immunoprecipitation (RIP) to confirm their bindings; co-immunoprecipitation (co-IP) and RNA-pulldown assay to determine the binding domains between G3BPs and tRF-27 . tRF-27 bound to the nuclear transport factor 2 like domain(NTF2 domain) of G3BPs through a specific sequence. tRF-27 relied on G3BPs and NTF2 domain to increase trastuzumab tolerance. tRF-27 competed with lysosomal associated membrane protein 1(LAMP1) for NTF2 domain, thereby inhibiting lysosomal localization of G3BPs and tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC). Acting as a growth regulator, Indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) is an important phytohormone that can be produced by several Bacillus species. However, few studies have been published on the comprehensive evaluation of the strains for practical applications and the effects of selenium species on their IAA-producing ability. The present study showed the selenite reduction strain Bacillus altitudinis LH18, which is capable of producing selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) at a high yield in a cost-effective manner. Bio-SeNPs were systematically characterized by using DLS, zeta potential, SEM, and FTIR. The results showed that these bio-SeNPs were small in particle size, homogeneously dispersed, and highly stable. Significantly, the IAA-producing ability of strain was differently affected under different selenium species. The addition of SeNPs and sodium selenite resulted in IAA contents of 221.7 µg/mL and 91.01 µg/mL, respectively, which were 3.23 and 1.33 times higher than that of the control. This study is the first to examine the influence of various selenium species on the IAA-producing capacity of Bacillus spp., providing a theoretical foundation for the enhancement of the IAA-production potential of microorganisms.

Secondary trastuzumab resistance represents an evolutionary adaptation of HER2-positive breast cancer during anti-HER2 treatment. Most current studies have tended to prioritize HER2 and its associated signaling pathways, often overlooking broader but seemingly less relevant cellular processes, along with their associated genetic and epigenetic mechanisms. Here, transcriptome data is not only characterized but also examined epigenomic and 3D genome architecture information in both trastuzumab-sensitive and secondary-resistant breast cancer cells. The findings reveal that the global metabolic reprogramming associated with trastuzumab resistance may stem from genome-wide alterations in both histone modifications and chromatin structure. Specifically, the transcriptional activities of key genes involved in lipid metabolism appear to be regulated by variant promoter H3K27me3 and H3K4me3 modifications, as well as promoter-enhancer interactions. Most cases of delayed wound healing are associated with bacterial biofilm infections due to high antibiotic resistance. To improve patient compliance and recovery rates, it is critical to develop minimally invasive and efficient methods to eliminate bacterial biofilms as an alternative to clinical debridement techniques. Herein, we develop a dissolving microneedle system containing Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs)-decorated silk fibroin microspheres (SFM-AgNPs) and antibiotics for synergistic treatment of bacterial biofilm infection. Silk fibroin microspheres (SFM) are controllably prepared in an incompatible system formed by a mixture of protein and carbohydrate solutions by using a mild all-aqueous phase method and serve as biological templates for the synthesis of AgNPs. The SFM-AgNPs exert dose- and time-dependent broad-spectrum antibacterial effects by inducing bacterial adhesion. The combination of SFM-AgNPs with antibiotics breaks the limitation of the antibacterial spectrum and achieves better efficacy with reduced antibiotic dosage. Using hyaluronic acid (HA) as the soluble matrix, the microneedle system containing SFM-AgNPs and anti-Gram-positive coccus drug (Mupirocin) inserts into the bacterial biofilms with sufficient strength, thereby effectively delivering the antibacterial agents and realizing good antibiofilm effect on Staphylococcus aureus-infected wounds. Monolithic perovskite/silicon tandem solar cells have been attracted much attention in recent years. Despite their high performances, the stability issue of perovskite-based devices is recognized as one of the key challenges to realize industrial application. When comes to the perovskite top subcell, the interface between perovskite and electron transporting layers (usually C 60 ) significantly affects the device efficiency as well as the stability due to their poor adhesion. Here, different from the conventional interfacial passivation using metal fluorides, a hybrid intermediate layer is proposed-PMMA functionalized with ionic liquid (IL)-is introduced at the perovskite/C 60 interface. The application of PMMA essentially improves the interfacial stability due to its strong hydrophobicity, while adding IL relieves the charge accumulation between PMMA and the perovskite. Thus, an optimal wide-bandgap perovskite solar cells achieves power conversion efficiency of 20.62%. These cells are further integrated as top subcells with silicon bottom cells in a monolithic tandem structure, presenting an optimized PCE up to 27.51%. Wide-bandgap metal halide perovskites have demonstrated promise in multijunction photovoltaic (PV) cells. However, photoinduced phase segregation and the resultant low open-circuit voltage (V oc ) have greatly limited the PV performance of perovskite-based multijunction devices. Here, a alloying strategy is reported to achieve uniform distribution of triple cations and halides in wide-bandgap perovskites by doping Rb + and Cl - with small ionic radii, which effectively suppresses halide phase segregation while promoting the homogenization of surface potential. Based on this strategy, a V oc of 1.33 V is obtained from single-junction perovskite solar cells, and a V OC approaching 3.0 V and a power conversion efficiency of 25.0% (obtained from reverse scan direction, certified efficiency: 24.19%) on an 1.04 cm 2 photoactive area can be achieved in a perovskite/perovskite/c-Si triple-junction tandem cell, where the certification efficiency is by far the greatest performance of perovskite-based triple-junction tandem solar cells. tRNA-derived fragments (tRFs) play crucial roles in cancer progression. Among them, tRF-27 has been identified as a key factor in promoting naïve trastuzumab resistance in HER2-positive breast cancer. However, the origin of tRF-27 remains uncertain. In this study, we propose that the upregulated expression of specific cysteine tRNAs may lead to the increased accumulation of tRF-27 in trastuzumab-resistant JIMT1 cells. Mechanistically, the reduced inhibitory H3K27me3 modification at the promoter regions of tRF-27-related tRNA genes in JIMT1 cells, potentially resulting from decreased EZH2 and increased KDM6A activity, may be a critical factor stimulating the transcriptional activity of these tRNA genes. Our research offers fresh insights into the mechanisms underlying elevated tRF-27 levels in trastuzumab-resistant breast cancer cells and suggests potential strategies to mitigate trastuzumab resistance in clinical treatments.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a progressive disease, involving the progressive breakdown of cartilage, as well as changes to the synovium and bone. There are currently no disease-modifying treatments available clinically. An increasing understanding of the disease pathophysiology is leading to new potential therapeutics, but improved approaches are needed to deliver these drugs, particularly to cartilage tissue, which is avascular and contains a dense matrix of collagens and negatively charged aggrecan proteoglycans. Cationic delivery vehicles have been shown to effectively penetrate cartilage, but these studies have thus far largely focused on proteins or nanoparticles, and the effects of macromolecular architectures have not yet been explored. Described here is the synthesis of a small library of polycations composed of N -(2-hydroxypropyl)methacrylamide (HPMA) and N -(3-aminopropyl)methacrylamide (APMA) with linear, 4-arm, or 8-arm structures and varying degrees of polymerization (DP) by reversible addition fragmentation chain-transfer (RAFT) polymerization. Uptake and retention of the polycations in bovine articular cartilage was assessed. While all polycations penetrated cartilage, uptake and retention generally increased with DP before decreasing for the highest DP. In addition, uptake and retention were higher for the linear polycations compared to the 4-arm and 8-arm polycations. In general, the polycations were well tolerated by bovine chondrocytes, but the highest DP polycations imparted greater cytotoxicity. Overall, this study reveals that linear polymer architectures may be more favorable for binding to the cartilage matrix and that the DP can be tuned to maximize uptake while minimizing cytotoxicity.

Hydrogels are of interest for a wide range of applications from sensors to drug delivery and tissue engineering. Self-immolative polymers, which depolymerize from end-to-end following a single backbone or end-cap cleavage, offer advantages such as amplification of the stimulus-mediated cleavage event through a cascade degradation process. It is also possible to change the active stimulus by changing only a single end-cap or linker unit. However, there are very few examples of self-immolative polymer hydrogels, and the reported examples exhibited relatively poor stability in their nontriggered state or slow degradation after triggering. Described here is the preparation of hydrogels composed of self-immolative poly(ethyl glyoxylate) (PEtG) and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG). Hydrogels formed from 2 kg/mol 4-arm PEG and 1.2 kg/mol PEtG with a light-responsive linker end-cap had high gel content (90%), an equilibrium water content of 89%, and a compressive modulus of 26 kPa. The hydrogel degradation could be turned on and off repeatedly through alternating cycles of irradiation and dark storage. Similar cycles could also be used to control the release of the anti-inflammatory drug celecoxib. These results demonstrate the potential for self-immolative hydrogels to afford a high degree of control over responses to stimuli in the context of smart materials for a variety of applications.

Design and modification of interfaces have been the main strategies in developing perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Among the interfacial treatments, dipole molecules have emerged as a practical approach to improve the efficiency and stability of PSCs due to their unique and versatile abilities to control the interfacial properties. Despite extensive applications in conventional semiconductors, working principles and design of interfacial dipoles in the performance/stability enhancement of PSCs are lacking an insightful elucidation. In this review, we first discuss the fundamental properties of electric dipoles and the specific roles of interfacial dipoles in PSCs. Then we systematically summarize the recent progress of dipole materials in several key interfaces to achieve efficient and stable PSCs. In addition to such discussions, we also dive into reliable analytical techniques to support the characterization of interfacial dipoles in PSCs. Finally, we highlight future directions and potential avenues for research in the development of dipolar materials through tailored molecular designs. Perennial trees develop and coordinate endogenous response signaling pathways, including their crosstalk and convergence, to cope with various environmental stresses which occur simultaneously in most cases. These processes are involved in gene transcriptional regulations that depend on dynamic interactions between regulatory proteins and corresponding chromatin regions, but the mechanisms remain poorly understood in trees. In this study, we detected chromatin regulatory landscapes of poplar under abscisic acid, methyl jasmonate, salicylic acid and sodium chloride (NaCl) treatment, through integrating ATAC-seq and RNA-seq data. Our results showed that the degree of chromatin accessibility for a given gene is closely related to its expression level. However, unlike the gene expression that shows treatment-specific response patterns, changes in chromatin accessibility exhibit high similarities under these treatments. We further proposed and experimentally validated that a homologous gene copy of RESPONSIVE TO DESICCATION 26 mediates the crosstalk between jasmonic acid and NaCl signaling pathways by directly regulating the stress-responsive genes and that circadian clock-related transcription factors like REVEILLE8 play a central role in response of poplar to these treatments. To date, solution-processing and vapor-deposition fabrication methods have achieved huge successes in high-efficiency perovskite solar cells (PSCs) and satisfy special demanding requirements for diverse application purposes, respectively. Although people realize that the fabrication procedure is crucial in device performance, insightful studies of charge carrier dynamics in perovskite films by different methods still lack. In this work, we compare the carrier behaviors in one-step spin-coated and dual-source coevaporated MAPbI 3 perovskite films by combining time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy and carrier dynamics simulation. We suggest that strains, lattice orientations, and defects at buried side of perovskite films, which are associated with different preparation processes, lead to variations in carrier behaviors. Hence fabrication of perovskite layers should be elaborately designed in order to satisfy the needs of different carrier behaviors in specified device configurations of PSCs such as smooth planar or textured monolithic tandem structures.

As miniature fibre-optic platforms, micro/nanofibres (MNFs) taper-drawn from silica fibres have been widely studied for applications from optical sensing, nonlinear optics to optomechanics and atom optics. While continuous-wave (CW) optical waveguiding is frequently adopted, so far almost all MNFs are operated in low-power region (e.g., <0.1 W). Here, we demonstrate high-power low-loss CW optical waveguiding in MNFs around 1550-nm wavelength. We show that a pristine MNF, even with a diameter down to 410 nm, can waveguide an optical power higher than 10 W, which is about 30 times higher than demonstrated previously. Also, we predict an optical damage threshold of 70 W. In high-power CW waveguiding MNFs, we demonstrate high-speed optomechanical driving of microparticles in air, and second harmonic generation efficiency higher than those pumped by short pulses. The development of materials with highly selective recognition towards Hg 2+ is of great significance in environmental monitoring. Herein, a novel thermo-responsive copolymer with Hg 2+ recognition property is prepared via thermally-initiated copolymerization of 5'-O-Acryloyl 5-methyl-uridine (APU) and N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM). The chemical structure and stimuli-sensitive properties of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-5-methyl-uridine) (P(NIPAM-co-APU)) linear polymers and hydrogel are thoroughly investigated. At the supramolecular level, P(NIPAM-co-APU) linear polymers could respond to both temperature and Hg 2+ stimuli with highly selective recognition towards Hg 2+ over other 18 metal ion species (at least 5 fold difference) and common anions. Upon capturing Hg 2+ by APU units as host metal receptors, the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of P(NIPAM-co-APU, PNU-7 and PNU-11) linear polymers are significantly shifted more than 10 °C due to the formation of stable APU-Hg 2+ -APU directed host-guest complexes. Accordingly, at the macroscopic level, P(NIPAM-co-APU) hydrogel display selective and robust recognition of Hg 2+ under optimum conditions, and its maximum Hg 2+ uptake capacity was 33.1 mg g -1 . Perovskite/silicon tandem solar cells are promising avenues for achieving high-performance photovoltaics with low costs. However, the highest certified efficiency of perovskite/silicon tandem devices based on economically matured silicon heterojunction technology (SHJ) with fully textured wafer is only 25.2% due to incompatibility between the limitation of fabrication technology which is not compatible with the production-line silicon wafer. Here, a molecular-level nanotechnology is developed by designing NiO x /2PACz ([2-(9H-carbazol-9-yl) ethyl]phosphonic acid) as an ultrathin hybrid hole transport layer (HTL) above indium tin oxide (ITO) recombination junction, to serve as a vital pivot for achieving a conformal deposition of high-quality perovskite layer on top. The NiO x interlayer facilitates a uniform self-assembly of 2PACz molecules onto the fully textured surface, thus avoiding direct contact between ITO and perovskite top-cell for a minimal shunt loss. As a result of such interfacial engineering, the fully textured perovskite/silicon tandem cells obtain a certified efficiency of 28.84% on a 1.2-cm 2 masked area, which is the highest performance to date based on the fully textured, production-line compatible SHJ. The extensive use of traditional cooking stoves to meet daily cooking and heating requirements has highlighted the serious problem of indoor and outdoor air pollution. This study evaluates seven improved coal-fired space-heating and cooking stoves and compares them with a widely used stove of an older design, selected as a baseline reference. The seven stoves were selected from a range of candidate improved stoves submitted by manufacturers for testing as part of the air quality improvement in the Hebei Clean Air Project, Hebei Province, China. Stove performance was evaluated when burning raw coal and coal briquettes during the high and low power stages respectively. All seven improved cooking stoves surpassed the baseline stove in combined heating and cooking thermal and emission performance. Among the improved cooking stoves, Model 2-TL was found to have the highest average thermal efficiency, 87.2 ± 0.5%, when burning coal briquettes at high and low power. The lowest emission of PM 2.5 was 0.94 ± 0.5 mg MJ NET -1 , CO 0.55 ± 0.28 g MJ NET -1 , and CO/CO 2 1.1 ± 0.6%, respectively. It is concluded that the use of these improved heating and cooking stoves should be promoted for daily cooking and heating requirements. Laser based on single plasmonic nanoparticle can provide optical frequency radiation far beyond the diffraction limit and is one of the ultimate goals of nanolasers, yet it remains a challenge to be realized because of the inherently high Ohmic loss. Here, we report the direct observation of lasing in microfiber-coupled single plasmonic nanoparticles enabled by strong mode coupling. We show that, by strongly coupling a gold nanorod (GNR) with the whispering gallery cavity of a dye-doped polymer microfiber (with diameter down to 2.0 μm), the substantially enhanced optical coherence of the hybrid photon-plasmon mode and effective gain accumulated from the active microfiber cavity enable single-mode laser emission from the GNR at room temperature with a threshold as low as 2.71 MW/cm 2 and a linewidth narrower than 2 nm.

We proposed a photonic approach to a lasing mode supported by low-loss oscillation of polarized bound electrons in an active nano-slit-waveguide cavity, which circumvents the confinement-loss trade-off of nanoplasmonics, and offers an optical confinement down to sub-1-nm level with a peak-to-background ratio of ∼30  dB. Experimentally, the extremely confined lasing field is realized as the dominant peak of a TE&#95;{0}-like lasing mode around 720-nm wavelength, in 1-nm-level width slit-waveguide cavities in coupled CdSe nanowire pairs. The measured lasing characteristics agree well with the theoretical calculations. Our results may pave a way towards new regions for nanolasers and light-matter interaction.

Organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites have shown tremendous potential for optoelectronic applications. Ion migration within the crystal and across heterointerfaces, however, imposed severe problems with material degradation and performance loss in devices. Encapsulating hybrid perovskite with a thin physical barrier can be essential for suppressing the undesirable interfacial reactions without inhibiting the desirable transport of charge carriers. Here, we demonstrated that nanoscale, pinhole-free Al 2 O 3 layer can be coated directly on the perovskite CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 using atomic layer deposition (ALD). The success can be attributed to a multitude of strategies including surface molecular modification and hybrid ALD processing combining the thermal and plasma-enhanced modes. The Al 2 O 3 films provided remarkable protection to the underlying perovskite films, surviving by hours in solvents without noticeable decays in either structural or optical properties. The results advanced the understanding of applying ALD directly on hybrid perovskite and provided new opportunities to implement stable and high-performance devices based on the perovskites.

Halide perovskites have shown superior potentials in flexible photovoltaics due to their soft and high power-to-weight nature. However, interfacial residual stress and lattice mismatch due to the large deformation of flexible substrates have greatly limited the performance of flexible perovskite solar cells (F-PSCs). Here, ammonium formate (HCOONH 4 ) is used as a pre-buried additive in electron transport layer (ETL) to realize a bottom-up infiltration process for an in situ, integral modification of ETL, perovskite layer, and their interface. The HCOONH 4 treatment leads to an enhanced electron extraction in ETL, relaxed residual strain and micro-strain in perovskite film, along with reduced defect densities within these layers. As a result, a top power conversion efficiency of 22.37% and a certified 21.9% on F-PSCs are achieved, representing the highest performance reported so far. Layered halide perovskites (LHPs) with crystallographically 2D structures have gained increasing interest for photovoltaic applications due to their superior chemical stability and intriguing anisotropic properties, which are in contrast to their conventional 3D perovskite counterparts. The most frequently studied LHPs are Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) phases, which suffer from a carrier-transport bottleneck due to the van der Waals gap associated with their intrinsic organic interlayer structures. To address this issue, Dion-Jacobson (DJ) and alternating-cation-interlayer (ACI) LHPs have rapidly emerged, which exhibit unique structural and (opto)electronic characteristics that may resemble those of the 3D counterparts owing to the eliminated or reduced van der Waals gap. Improved photophysical properties have been achieved in DJ and ACI LHPs, leading towards better photovoltaic performance. Here we provide a comprehensive discussion on the merits and promises of DJ and ACI LHPs from a chemistry perspective. Then, we review recent progress on the synthesis and tailoring of DJ and ACI LHP crystals and thin films, as well as their optoelectronic properties and photovoltaic performance. Finally, we discuss possible pathways to overcome critical challenges to realize the full potential of DJ and ACI LHPs for high-performance solar cells and beyond., (© 2021 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)

Background: Plant secondary growth depends on the activity of the vascular cambium, which produces xylem and phloem. Wood derived from xylem is the most abundant form of biomass globally and has played key socio-economic and subsistence roles throughout human history. However, despite intensive study of vascular development, the full diversity of cell types and the gene networks engaged are still poorly understood., Results: Here, we have applied an optimized protoplast isolation protocol and RNA sequencing to characterize the high-resolution single-cell transcriptional landscape of highly lignified poplar stems. We identify 20 putative cell clusters with a series of novel cluster-specific marker genes and find that these cells are highly heterogeneous based on the transcriptome. Analysis of these marker genes' expression dynamics enables reconstruction of the cell differentiation trajectories involved in phloem and xylem development. We find that different cell clusters exhibit distinct patterns of phytohormone responses and emphasize the use of our data to predict potential gene redundancy and identify candidate genes related to vascular development in trees., Conclusions: These findings establish the transcriptional landscape of major cell types of poplar stems at single-cell resolution and provide a valuable resource for investigating basic principles of vascular cell specification and differentiation in trees., (© 2021. Group 2 innate lymphoid cells (ILC2s) manifest tissue heterogeneity and are crucial modulators of regional immune responses. The molecular mechanisms regulating tissue ILC2 properties remain elusive. Here, we interrogate the signatures of ILC2s from five tissues at the transcriptome and epigenetic level. We have found that tissue microenvironment strongly shapes ILC2 identities. The intestine induces Aiolos + ILC2s, whereas lung and pancreas enhance Galectin-1 + ILC2s. Though being a faithful gut ILC2 feature under the steady state, Aiolos is induced in non-intestinal ILC2s by pro-inflammatory cytokines. Specifically, IL-33 stimulates Aiolos expression in both human and mouse non-intestinal ILC2s. Functionally, Aiolos facilitates eosinophil recruitment by supporting IL-5 production and proliferation of ST2 + ILC2s through inhibiting PD-1. At the epigenetic level, ILC2 tissue characters are imprinted by open chromatin regions (OCRs) at non-promoters. Intestinal-specific transcription factor aryl hydrocarbon receptor (Ahr) binds to Ikzf3 (encoding Aiolos) locus, increases the accessibility of an intestinal ILC2-specific OCR, and promotes the Ikzf3 transcription by enhancing H3K27ac. Consequently, Ahr prevents ILC2s entering an "exhausted-like" state through sustaining Aiolos expression. Objective: To compare the effectiveness of arthroscopic intertubercular groove and open subpectoral tenodesis in treatment of long head of biceps tendon (LHBT) tendinopathy., Methods: A clinical data of 80 patients with LHBT tendinopathy who were admitted between June 2013 and May 2017 and met the selection criteria was retrospectively analyzed. After cutting LHBT under arthroscopy, the arthroscopic intertubercular groove tenodesis was performed in 40 cases (group A) and open subpectoral tenodesis was performed in 40 cases (group B). There was no significant difference in the gender, age, side of the affected shoulder joint, disease duration, and preoperative pain visual analogue scale (VAS) score, Constant score, American Society of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery (ASES) score, Disability of Arm, Shoulder, and Hand (DASH) score, LHBT score (LHBS) between the two groups ( P >0.05). The operation time and the scores of shoulder joint pain and function at 12 months after operation were compared between the two groups., Results: The operation time was (3.6±2.5) minutes in group A and (8.5±2.3) minutes in group B, showing a significant difference ( t =18.584, P =0.000). The incisions of the two groups healed by first intention, and there was no complication such as infection or thrombosis. All patients were followed up. The follow-up time was 24-30 months (mean, 26.0 months) in group A and 24-31 months (mean, 26.0 months) in group B. Both Speed test and Yergason test were negative at 3 months after operation. MRI showed that there was no obvious effusion around the LHTB and no dislocation of LHTB. At 12 months after operation, the VAS score, Constant score, ASES score, DASH score, and LHBS score of the two groups all improved when compared with preoperative ones ( P <0.05), and there was no significant difference in the differences before and after operation between the two groups ( P >0.05). No Popeye sign appeared during the follow-up., Conclusion: The arthroscopic intertubercular groove and open subpectoral tenodesis can effectively relieve shoulder pain and improve function, but the former has shorter operation time and less trauma.

p-p orbital interaction through Mg(ii) isovalent doping in methylammonium lead chloride perovskite significantly enhances the electronic properties while not affecting the optical bandgap. This chemical behaviour shows promising applications to optoelectronic devices.

The application of pressure can achieve novel structures and exotic phenomena in condensed matters. However, such pressure-induced transformations are generally reversible and useless for engineering materials for ambient-environment applications. Here, we report comprehensive high-pressure investigations on a series of Dion-Jacobson (D-J) perovskites A'A n -1 Pb n I 3 n +1 [A' = 3-(aminomethyl) piperidinium (3AMP), A = methylammonium (MA), n = 1, 2, 4]. Our study demonstrates their irreversible behavior, which suggests pressure/strain engineering could viably improve light-absorber material not only in situ but also ex situ, thus potentially fostering the development of optoelectronic and electroluminescent materials. We discovered that the photoluminescence (PL) intensities are remarkably enhanced by one order of magnitude at mild pressures. Also, higher pressure significantly changes the lattices, boundary conditions of electronic wave functions, and possibly leads to semiconductor-metal transitions. State-of-the-art halide perovskite solar cells have bandgaps larger than 1.45 eV, which restricts their potential for realizing the Shockley-Queisser limit. Previous search for low-bandgap (1.2 to 1.4 eV) halide perovskites has resulted in several candidates, but all are hybrid organic-inorganic compositions, raising potential concern regarding device stability. Here we show the promise of an inorganic low-bandgap (1.38 eV) CsPb 0.6 Sn 0.4 I 3 perovskite stabilized via interface functionalization. Device efficiency up to 13.37% is demonstrated. The device shows high operational stability under one-sun-intensity illumination, with T 80 and T 70 lifetimes of 653 h and 1045 h, respectively (T 80 and T 70 represent efficiency decays to 80% and 70% of the initial value, respectively), and long-term shelf stability under nitrogen atmosphere. Controlled exposure of the device to ambient atmosphere during a long-term (1000 h) test does not degrade the efficiency. These findings point to a promising direction for achieving low-bandgap perovskite solar cells with high stability.

Background: Endostatin, a biologically active fragment of collagen XVIII, has been observed in patients with ischemic heart disease. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether endostatin overexpression could attenuate cardiac hypertrophy by inhibiting the cyclic adenosine monophosphate-protein kinase A (cAMP-PKA) signaling pathway., Methods: This study was examined in vivo in rats and in vitro in primary neonatal rat cardiomyocytes treated with angiotensin (Ang) II to model cardiac hypertrophy. Twenty-four male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomized into adenovirus (Ad)-green fluorescent protein, Ang II, Ad-endostatin, and Ang II + Ad-endostatin groups (n = 6 in each group). Four weeks later, all the rats were weighed and sacrificed after transthoracic echocardiography. Cardiac function was evaluated by transthoracic echocardiography, cardiomyocyte size was evaluated by hematoxylin-eosin staining. Levels of atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) and brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) were evaluated by quantitative reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction or Western blotting, PKA level was evaluated by Western blotting, and cAMP level was evaluated by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Statistical significance among multiple groups was evaluated by one-way analysis of variance., Results: Endostatin overexpression reduced the increases in left ventricle (LV) mass (P = 0.0063), LV mass/body weight (BW) (P = 0.0013), interventricular septal thickness (IVS) in diastole (P = 0.0013), IVS in systole (P = 0.0056), left ventricular posterior wall thickness (LVPW) in diastole (P = 0.0291), LVPW in systole (P = 0.0080), heart weight (HW) (P = 0.0138), HW/BW (P = 0.0001), and HW/tibial length (P = 0.0372) in Ang II-treated rats. In addition, endostatin overexpression reduced cardiomyocyte cross-sectional area expansion, and reduced the levels of ANP and BNP in Ang II-treated rats (P = 0.0251 and 0.0477 for messenger RNA [mRNA]), and primary neonatal rat cardiomyocytes (P = 0.0188 and P = 0.0024 for mRNA; P = 0.0023 and 0.0013 for protein, respectively). Additionally, endostatin overexpression reduced the increase of cAMP (P = 0.0054) and PKA (P = 0.0328) levels in cardiomyocytes treated with Ang II. Treatment with cAMP reversed the effects of endostatin overexpression on ANP (P = 0.0263) and BNP (P = 0.0322) levels in cardiomyocytes induced by Ang II., Conclusion: Endostatin overexpression could alleviate cardiac hypertrophy by inhibiting the cAMP-PKA signaling pathway.

Background and Aim: Depression is often accompanied by thoughts of self-harm, which are a strong predictor of subsequent suicide attempt and suicide death. Few empirical data are available regarding the temporal correlation between depression symptoms and suicidal ideation. We investigated the anecdotal concern that suicidal ideation may increase during a period of depression improvement., Data: Longitudinal Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ)-9 is a questionnaire of 9 multiple-choice questions to assess the frequency of depressive symptoms within the previous two weeks. We analyzed a chronic depression treatment population's electronic health record (EHR) data, containing 610 patients' longitudinal PHQ-9 scores (62% age 45 and older; 68% female) within 40 weeks., Methods: The irregular and sparse EHR data were transformed into continuous trajectories using Gaussian process regression. We first estimated the correlations between the symptoms (total score of the first 8 questions; PHQ-8) and suicide ideation (9th question score; Item 9) using the cross-correlation function. We then used an artificial neural network (ANN) to discover subtypes of depression patterns from the fitted depression trajectories. In addition, we conducted a separate analysis using the unfitted raw PHQ scores to examine PHQ-8's and Item 9's pattern changes., Results: Results showed that the majority of patients' PHQ-8 and Item 9 scores displayed strong temporal correlations. We found five patterns in the PHQ-8 and the Item 9 trajectories. We also found 8% - 13% of the patients have experienced an increase in suicidal ideation during the improvement of their PHQ-8. Organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites such as methylammonium lead iodide (CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 ) are game-changing semiconductors for solar cells and light-emitting devices owing to their defect tolerance and exceptionally long carrier lifetimes and diffusion lengths. Determining whether the dynamically disordered organic cations with large dipole moment benefit the optoelectronic properties of CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 has been an outstanding challenge. Herein, via transient absorption measurements employing an infrared pump pulse tuned to a methylammonium vibration, we observe slow, nanosecond-long thermal dissipation from the selectively excited organic mode to the inorganic sublattice. The resulting transient electronic signatures, during the period of thermal-nonequilibrium when the induced thermal motions are mostly concentrated on the organic sublattice, reveal that the induced atomic motions of the organic cations do not alter the absorption or the photoluminescence response of CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 , beyond thermal effects. Our results suggest that the attractive optoelectronic properties of CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 mainly derive from the inorganic lead-halide framework.

Excitations of free electrons and optical phonons are known to permit access to the negative real part of relative permittivities (ϵ^{'}<0) that yield strong light-matter interactions. However, negative ϵ^{'} arising from excitons has been much less explored. Via development of a dielectric-coating based technique described herein, we report fundamental optical properties of two-dimensional hybrid perovskites (2DHPs), composed of alternating layers of inorganic and organic sublattices. Low members of 2DHPs (N=1 and N=2) exhibit negative ϵ^{'} stemming from the large exciton binding energy and sizable oscillator strength. Furthermore, hyperbolic dispersion (i.e., ϵ^{'} changes sign with directions) occurs in the visible range, which has been previously achieved only with artificial metamaterials. Such naturally occurring, exotic dispersion stems from the extremely anisotropic excitonic behaviors of 2DHPs, and can intrinsically support a large photonic density of states. We suggest that several other van der Waals solids may exhibit similar behaviors arising from excitonic response.

5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) can be prepared by the catalytic dehydration of glucose or fructose using a range of homogeneous or heterogeneous catalysts. For our research, a selection of closely related Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) were used as catalysts in the conversion of glucose to 5-HMF due to their chemical and thermal stability as well as the Lewis acidity of zirconium. Our initial study focused on the use of UiO-66-X (X = H, NH 2 and SO 3 H), optimization of the dehydration reaction conditions, and correlation of the catalytic activity with the MOF's properties, in particular, their surface area. The highest yield of 5-HMF (28%) could be obtained using UiO-66 under optimal reaction conditions in dimethylsulfoxide and this could be increased to 37% in the presence of water. In catalyst recycling tests, we found the efficiency of UiO-66 was maintained across five runs (23%, 19%, 21%, 20%, 22.5%). The post-catalysis MOF, UiO-66-humin, was characterized using a range of techniques including PXRD, FT-IR, 13 C Solid State NMR and N 2 gas adsorption. We continued to optimize the reaction using MOF 808 as the catalyst. Notably, MOF 808 afforded higher yields of 5-HMF under the same conditions compared with the three UiO-66-X compounds. Materials in metastable states, such as amorphous ice and supercooled condensed matter, often exhibit exotic phenomena. To date, achieving metastability is usually accomplished by rapid quenching through a thermodynamic path function, namely, heating-cooling cycles. However, heat can be detrimental to organic-containing materials because it can induce degradation. Alternatively, the application of pressure can be used to achieve metastable states that are inaccessible via heating-cooling cycles. Here we report metastable states of 2D organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites reached through structural amorphization under compression followed by recrystallization via decompression. Remarkably, such pressure-derived metastable states in 2D hybrid perovskites exhibit enduring bandgap narrowing by as much as 8.2% with stability under ambient conditions. The achieved metastable states in 2D hybrid perovskites via compression-decompression cycles offer an alternative pathway toward manipulating the properties of these "soft" materials., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.

Hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites are emerging semiconductors for cheap and efficient photovoltaics and light-emitting devices. Different from conventional inorganic semiconductors, hybrid perovskites consist of coexisting organic and inorganic sub-lattices, which present disparate atomic masses and bond strengths. The nanoscopic interpenetration of these disparate components, which lack strong electronic and vibrational coupling, presents fundamental challenges to the understanding of charge and heat dissipation. Here we study phonon population and equilibration processes in methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI 3 ) by transiently probing the vibrational modes of the organic sub-lattice following above-bandgap optical excitation. We observe inter-sub-lattice thermal equilibration on timescales ranging from hundreds of picoseconds to a couple of nanoseconds. As supported by a two-temperature model based on first-principles calculations, the slow thermal equilibration is attributable to the sequential phonon populations of the inorganic and organic sub-lattices, respectively. The observed long-lasting thermal non-equilibrium offers insights into thermal transport and heat management of the emergent hybrid material class.

The chemical stabilities of hybrid perovskite materials demand further improvement toward long-term and large-scale photovoltaic applications. Herein, the enhanced chemical stability of CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 is reported by doping the divalent anion Se 2- in the form of PbSe in precursor solutions to enhance the hydrogen-bonding-like interactions between the organic cations and the inorganic framework. As a result, in 100% humidity at 40 °C, the 10% w/w PbSe-doped CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 films exhibited >140-fold stability improvement over pristine CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 films. As the PbSe-doped CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 films maintained the perovskite structure, a top efficiency of 10.4% with 70% retention after 700 h aging in ambient air is achieved with an unencapsulated 10% w/w PbSe:MAPbI 3 -based cell. While the nanowire (NW) lasers have attracted much attentions as nanoscale coherent sources in recent years, the heat accumulation and temperature-rise-induced breakdown remain challenges to improving the lasers for practical applications. Here we propose a microscale liquid-cooled approach to address the issue. Calculated results show that, compared with conventional air-cooled lasing systems, liquid-cooled NW lasers can allow much higher thermal power. By keeping the NW temperature below 373 K, the allowed thermal power in water is about 21 times that in air (850 µW in water versus 40 µW in air). Transient temperature evolution reveals a much faster heat dissipation of the NW in water (30 ns) than in air (7 µs), indicating a much higher allowable repetition rate in water than in air (e.g., 10 MHz versus 100 kHz). Our results suggest a possible route to compact NW lasers with higher power, new materials and new operation modes.

The organic-inorganic hybrid lead trihalide perovskites have been emerging as the most attractive photovoltaic materials. As regulated by Shockley-Queisser theory, a formidable materials science challenge for improvement to the next level requires further band-gap narrowing for broader absorption in solar spectrum, while retaining or even synergistically prolonging the carrier lifetime, a critical factor responsible for attaining the near-band-gap photovoltage. Herein, by applying controllable hydrostatic pressure, we have achieved unprecedented simultaneous enhancement in both band-gap narrowing and carrier-lifetime prolongation (up to 70% to ∼100% increase) under mild pressures at ∼0.3 GPa. The pressure-induced modulation on pure hybrid perovskites without introducing any adverse chemical or thermal effect clearly demonstrates the importance of band edges on the photon-electron interaction and maps a pioneering route toward a further increase in their photovoltaic performance.

We report on the carrier-rotor coupling effect in perovskite organic-inorganic hybrid lead iodide (CH3NH3PbI3) compounds discovered by isotope effects. Deuterated organic-inorganic perovskite compounds including CH3ND3PbI3, CD3NH3PbI3, and CD3ND3PbI3 were synthesized. Devices made from regular CH3NH3PbI3 and deuterated CH3ND3PbI3 exhibit comparable performance in band gap, current-voltage, carrier mobility, and power conversion efficiency. However, a time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) study reveals that CH3NH3PbI3 exhibits notably longer carrier lifetime than that of CH3ND3PbI3, in both thin-film and single-crystal formats. Furthermore, the comparison in carrier lifetime between CD3NH3PbI3 and CH3ND3PbI3 single crystals suggests that vibrational modes in methylammonium (MA(+)) have little impact on carrier lifetime. In contrast, the fully deuterated compound CD3ND3PbI3 reconfirmed the trend of decreasing carrier lifetime upon the increasing moment of inertia of cationic MA(+). Polaron model elucidates the electron-rotor interaction.

Sympathetic activity is enhanced in heart failure and hypertensive rats. The aims of the current study were: i) To investigate the association between renal sympathetic nerve activity (RSNA) and mean arterial pressure (MAP) in response to intravenous injection of the ganglionic blocker hexamethonium; and ii) to determine whether normal Wistar rats and spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs) differ in their response to hexamethonium. RSNA and MAP were recorded in anaesthetized rats. Intravenous injection of four doses of hexamethonium significantly reduced the RSNA, MAP and heart rate (HR) in the Wistar rats and SHRs. There were no significant differences in the RSNA, MAP or HR between Wistar rats and SHRs at the two lowest doses of hexamethonium. However, the two highest doses of hexamethonium resulted in a greater reduction in the RSNA and MAP in SHRs compared with Wistar rats. There was a significant positive correlation between the alterations in RSNA and MAP in response to the intravenous injection of hexamethonium in the Wistar rats and SHRs. There were no significant differences in the timing of the maximal effects on RSNA, MAP or HR or in recovery following hexamethonium treatment. These results suggest that there is an association between the RSNA and MAP response to intravenous injection of hexamethonium and that the alterations in MAP in response to hexamethonium may be used to evaluate basal sympathetic nerve activity.

Two pseudohalide thiocyanate ions (SCN(-) ) have been used to replace two iodides in CH3 NH3 PbI3 , and the resulting perovskite material was used as the active material in solar cells. In accelerated stability tests, the CH3 NH3 Pb(SCN)2 I perovskite films were shown to be superior to the conventional CH3 NH3 PbI3 films as no significant degradation was observed after the film had been exposed to air with a relative humidity of 95 % for over four hours, whereas CH3 NH3 PbI3 films degraded in less than 1.5 hours. Solar cells based on CH3 NH3 Pb(SCN)2 I thin films exhibited an efficiency of 8.3 %, which is comparable to that of CH3 NH3 PbI3 based cells fabricated in the same way., (© 2015 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co.
