Glass Fiber-Reinforced Composite (GFRP) has found widespread use in engineering structures due to its lightweight construction, high strength, and design flexibility. However, pure GFRP beams exhibit weaknesses in terms of stiffness, stability, and local compressive strength, which compromise their bending properties. In addressing these limitations, this study introduces innovative square GFRP beams infused with gypsum-based composites (GBIGCs). Comprehensive experiments and theoretical analyses have been conducted to explore their manufacturing process and bending characteristics. Initially, four types of GBIGC-namely, hollow GFRP beams, pure gypsum, steel-reinforced gypsum, and fiber-mixed gypsum-infused beams-were designed and fabricated for comparative analysis. Material tests were conducted to assess the coagulation characteristics of gypsum and its mechanical performance influenced by polyvinyl acetate fibers (PVAs). Subsequently, eight GFRP square beams (length: 1.5 m, section size: 150 mm × 150 mm) infused with different gypsum-based composites underwent four-point bending tests to determine their ultimate bending capacity and deflection patterns. The findings revealed that a 0.12% dosage of protein retarder effectively extends the coagulation time of gypsum, making it suitable for specimen preparation, with initial and final setting times of 113 min and 135 min, respectively. The ultimate bending load of PVA-mixed gypsum-infused GFRP beams is 203.84% higher than that of hollow beams, followed by pure gypsum and steel-reinforced gypsum, with increased values of 136.97% and 186.91%, respectively. The ultimate load values from the theoretical and experimental results showed good agreement, with an error within 7.68%. These three types of GBIGCs with significantly enhanced flexural performance can be filled with different materials to meet specific load-bearing requirements for various scenarios. Their improved flexural strength and lightweight characteristics make GBIGCs well suited for applications such as repairing roof beams, light prefabricated frames, coastal and offshore buildings.

Compressive testing of specimens taken from relatively thin composite plates is difficult, especially due to the occurrence of buckling. To prevent buckling, the central portion of the specimens used for the compression test has smaller dimensions, and the specimens can be guided along their entire length. For these reasons, optical methods, such as digital image correlation (DIC), cannot be used for the compression test and strain rosettes cannot be glued onto the samples to determine Poisson's ratio. In this study, compression tests of a glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) were conducted using both the ASTM D695 (Boeing version) and a newly proposed method. The new method involves using special specimens that allow T-type rosettes to be bonded to determine Poisson's ratio, whose value of 0.14 was thus determined. SEM images of the failure surfaces were presented and interpreted. A finite element analysis (FEA) of the specimens tested in compression is also presented. The first analyzed case considers the homogeneous and orthotropic composite, loaded with a uniformly distributed force. The normal stress in the central section of the specimen, determined with FEA, has an error of 6.52% compared to that determined experimentally. Additionally, the strain in the center of the strain gauge, determined with FEA, has an error of 4.76% compared to the measured one. In the second case studied with FEA, the sample is loaded with a quasi-concentrated force, which can move in the direction of the symmetry axes of the cross-section, to study the effect of the eccentricity of the compression force on the state of stress. It was shown that the eccentricity of the force has a great influence: the stress distribution in the section of the specimen becomes strongly non-uniform. For a force eccentricity of 0.4 mm in the direction of the OX axis, the minimum stress decreases by 53.7%, and the maximum stress increases by 55.4%. In order to analyze the influence of some manufacturing defects, two other cases were analyzed by FEA, in which it was assumed that the thicknesses of the outer resin layers were modified, making them asymmetrical. For this final FEA, the specimen was considered to be composed of laminates. These results demonstrate the special attention that must be paid to the centric application of force in compression testing.

This article investigates the behavior of hybrid FRP Concrete-Steel columns with an elliptical cross section. The investigation was carried out by gathering information through literature and conducting a parametric study, which resulted in 116 data points. Moreover, multiple machine learning predictive models were developed to accurately estimate the confined ultimate strain and the ultimate load of confined concrete at the rupture of FRP tube. Decision Tree (DT), Random Forest (RF), Adaptive Boosting (ADAB), Categorical Boosting (CATB), and eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGB) machine learning techniques were utilized for the proposed models. Finally, these models were visually and quantitatively verified and evaluated. It was concluded that the CATB and XGB are standout models, offering high accuracy and strong generalization capabilities. The CATB model is slightly superior due to its consistently lower error rates during testing, indicating it is the best model for this dataset when considering both accuracy and robustness against overfitting., (© 2024. The detection of impact and depth defects in Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) composites has been extensively studied to develop effective, reliable, and cost-efficient assessment methods through various Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) techniques. Challenges in detecting these defects arise from varying responses based on the geometrical shape, thickness, and defect types. Long Pulse Thermography (LPT), utilizing an uncooled microbolometer and a low-resolution infrared (IR) camera, presents a promising solution for detecting both depth and impact defects in GFRP materials with a single setup and minimal tools at an economical cost. Despite its potential, the application of LPT has been limited due to susceptibility to noise from environmental radiation and reflections, leading to blurry images. This study focuses on optimizing LPT parameters to achieve accurate defect detection. Specifically, we investigated 11 flat-bottom hole (FBH) depth defects and impact defects ranging from 8 J to 15 J in GFRP materials. The key parameters examined include the environmental temperature, background reflection, background color reflection, and surface emissivity. Additionally, we employed image processing techniques to classify composite defects and automatically highlight defective areas. The Tanimoto Criterion (TC) was used to evaluate the accuracy of LPT both for raw images and post-processed images. The results demonstrate that through parameter optimization, the depth defects in GFRP materials were successfully detected. The TC success rate reached 0.91 for detecting FBH depth defects in raw images, which improved significantly after post-processing using Canny edge detection and Hough circle detection algorithms. This study underscores the potential of optimized LPT as a cost-effective and reliable method for detecting defects in GFRP composites.

As the landscape of mobility trends continues to evolve, concerted efforts have been made to incorporate Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) into automotive components. However, the substantial increase in cost relative to the achieved weight reduction has limited its widespread adoption. Consequently, research endeavors have focused on exploring alternative composite materials, adapting fibers such as glass fibers, natural fibers, and recycled fibers, to reduce the cost of composite components. Of particular interest in the automotive industry is the utilization of Glass Fiber Reinforced Plastic (GFRP) in chassis components like leaf springs. Nevertheless, the development of GFRP leaf springs encounters a significant challenge related to the adhesive strength at the interface between epoxy resin and glass fibers, which is crucial for enhancing fatigue durability. While glass fibers were traditionally paired with unsaturated polyester or vinyl ester matrices, the pursuit of improved durability has led to the adoption of epoxy matrices. Regrettably, this transition has not consistently yielded the expected gains in interfacial adhesion. In light of these challenges, this study systematically compares the interfacial adhesion strength and fatigue endurance performance. For comparison, two coupling agents widely used commercially, amino silane and epoxy silane, were selected. Glass fibers treated with each coupling agent were purchased commercially, and glass fiber-reinforced plastic (GFRP) specimens were fabricated using the HP-RTM (High-Pressure Resin Transfer Molding) method. Static property evaluations and fatigue durability assessments were conducted using the fabricated specimens. The results showed that when epoxy silane was used as the coupling agent, the interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) increased by approximately 7 %. Furthermore, SEM(Scanning Electron Microscopes) analysis confirmed a significant enhancement in interfacial adhesion, providing support for the ILSS evaluation results. Consequently, the fatigue durability performance improved by approximately six-fold. Glass-fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) composites are widely used due to their high strength-to-weight ratio and corrosion resistance. However, their properties can degrade under different environmental conditions, affecting long-term reliability. This study examines the effects of temperature and chemical environments on GFRP pipes. Specimens were exposed to salt water and alkaline solutions at 20 °C and 50 °C. Diffusion coefficients and tensile and flexural properties were measured. Advanced techniques (TGA, FT-IR, and XRD) showed a 54.73% crystallinity difference between samples at 20 °C/air and 50 °C/salt water. Elevated temperatures and alkaline conditions accelerated degradation, with diffusion coefficients 68.38% higher at 50 °C/salt water compared to at 20 °C/salt water. Flexural strength decreased by 47.65% and tensile strength by 13.89%, at 50 °C/alkaline compared to 20 °C/air. Temperature was identified as the primary factor affecting mechanical performance, while alkaline environments significantly influenced tensile and flexural modulus. These results underscore the importance of considering environmental factors for the durability of GFRP composites.

Glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) anchor bolts are a new type of high-performance nonmetallic anchor with significantly higher tensile strength, a lighter weight, better corrosion resistance, and a lower cost than steel bars. Therefore, exploring the durability and bonding performance of GFRP anchor systems is of great importance for the structural design of protective engineering, especially in coastal environments. However, insufficient research has been conducted on the durability of GFRP resin bolts in seawater conditions, with no universal standard on the pullout testing of GFRP bolts. To study the durability and bonding performance of GFRP resin bolts, durability experiments were conducted in this work using artificial seawater, and the pullout tests were conducted using a large-scale concrete platform with different compressive strengths (21.2, 40.8, and 61.3 MPa). The results of the durability experiments indicated that the strength variations of the GFRP rods and epoxy resin materials in artificial seawater environments were less than 5%. Subsequently, indoor pullout tests using steel tubes filled with epoxy resin were conducted, and the test results indicated a critical anchor length value. Pullout tests of the GFRP resin bolts embedded in large-scale concrete blocks were also conducted with different strengths. According to the test results, all GFRP resin bolts embedded in the three concrete blocks with different compressive strengths exhibited rod fracture failure. The failure mode was not controlled via the compressive strength of the concrete blocks due to the high bonding strength between the resin and the rod, as well as between the resin and the concrete. Therefore, this GFRP resin anchor system could fully utilize the tensile strength of GFRP rods. This research offers significant practical value in verifying the safety and reliability of GFRP resin bolts in corrosive marine service environments, and it contributes to the application and development of GFRP materials in the engineering field, serving as a valuable reference for the structural design and further study of GFRP bolts.

The primary drawback of concrete lies in its low tensile strength, prompting the development of various solutions to enhance this aspect. A notable approach is the utilization of Prestressed Reinforced Concrete (PRC) with tendons, aimed at bolstering its tensile strength. As the use of diverse tendon types in the PRC continues to surge, a review becomes imperative to delve into this evolution. Therefore, this study delved into the engineering characteristics, performance, and evolution of different tendon varieties, encompassing both steel and composite options. Despite certain drawbacks associated with employing composite materials such as Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) tendons - such as heightened costs, limited availability of composite materials, and intricate manufacturing processes - there are distinct advantages and merits to incorporating FRP composite tendons in the realm of construction. In this respect, Carbon FRP tendons exhibited superior strength, comparable to their steel counterparts. Glass FRP tendons, lacking metallic components, possessed non-magnetic properties, rendering them resistant to corrosion. Additionally, Aramid FRP tendons boasted low flammability and exceptional resistance to elevated temperatures. Lastly, Basalt FRP tendons offered sustainability, rust resistance, and non-corrosiveness. During the infusion process of a glass-fiber-reinforced thermosetting composite hose, the viscosity of its resin matrix undergoes temporal variations. Consequently, if the impact of resin viscosity changes over time on the internal resin fluidity is not considered during the infusion process, this may result in the incomplete impregnation of the hose, characterized by the presence of numerous voids. This phenomenon adversely affects the quality of the pipe's curing and forming process. Therefore, based on the characteristic variations in resin viscosity, this paper considers the changes in fluidity caused by the resin's temporal evolution within the material. We establish a finite element simulation model to calculate and analyze the overall infusion effects of resin viscosity changes during the hose infusion process. Furthermore, based on the predicted analysis, a variable parameter infusion strategy is proposed to increase resin impregnation in the hose, thereby reducing internal void content and subsequently improving the quality of material curing and forming.

A method of internal pressure-temperature coupling analysis for the thermal decomposition of GFRP composites under high-temperature conditions was established, which incorporates coupled calculations of heat transfer equations, the Arrhenius equation, Darcy's law, and the ideal gas state equation. Using the overlapping mesh method, the coupling calculation of temperature and internal pressure is realized based on the UMATHT and USDFLD user subroutines developed. Specifically, two user subroutines, UMATHT-1 and UMATHT-2, are used to define the heat transfer equation and gas diffusion equation separately. Numerical simulations are conducted to simulate the polymers' thermal decomposition in high-temperature environments. For glass fiber/vinyl ester composites and glass fiber/phenolic composites, the predicted temperature and pressure values are in good agreement with experimental measurements, and porosity and permeability are then analyzed. Due to the accumulation of thermal decomposition gases, inter-pressure within the material surged and reached a peak value. After that, it began to decrease, but the factors affecting the pressure decrease vary at different positions. Specifically, the pressure closest to the heating surface is influenced by the combined effects of decomposition rate, permeability, and porosity, while the pressure far away from the heating surface is only affected by the initial permeability. The pressure in the intermediate region may be influenced by both increased porosity and initial permeability.

The commercialization of modular timber products as cost-effective and lightweight components has resulted in innovative engineering products, e.g., glued laminated timber, laminated veneer lumber, I-beams, cross-laminated timber and solid timber joined with wedge joints. With the passage of time, timber structures can deteriorate, or new structural elements are required to increase the stiffness or load-bearing capacity in newly built structures, e.g., lintels over large-scale glazing or garages, or to reduce cross-sectional dimensions or save costly timber material while still achieving low weight. It is in such cases that repair or correct reinforcement is required. In this experimental and numerical study, the static performance of flexural timber beams reinforced with prestressed basalt BFRP, glass GFRP and hybrid glass-basalt fiber bars is shown. The experimental tests resulted in an increase in the load-carrying capacity of BFRP (44%), GFRP (33%) and hybrid bars (43%) and an increase in the stiffness of BFRP (28%), GFRP (24%) and hybrid bars (25%). In addition to this, glued laminated timber beams reinforced with prestressed basalt rods subjected to biological degradation, 7 years of weathering and prolonged exposure to various environmental conditions were examined, and an increase in the load-bearing capacity of 27% and an increase in stiffness of 28% were obtained. In addition, full-size laminated timber beams reinforced with prestressed basalt bars were investigated in the field as an exploratory test under fire conditions at elevated temperatures, and the effect of the physical-mechanical properties during the fire was examined via an analysis of these properties after the fire. In addition, a satisfactory correlation of the numerical simulations with the experimental studies was obtained. The differences were between 1.1% and 5.5%. The concordance was due to the fact that, in this study, the Young, Poisson and shear moduli were determined for all quality classes of sawn timber. Only a significant difference resulted in the numerical analysis for the beams exposed to fire under fire conditions. The experimental, theoretical and numerical analyses in this research were exploratory and will be expanded as directions for future research.

This study investigates the fracture behavior of glass fiber-reinforced plastic (GFRP) under various loading conditions using acoustic emission (AE) testing. Using fracture tests and time series analysis of AE signals, parameters such as b -value, improved b -value (I b -value), and energy b -value ( b e -value) were examined to understand crack initiation, growth, and structural failure. The stress-strain curve revealed distinct responses during tensile and step loading, and time series analysis highlighted variations in amplitude, AE energy, and Kaiser and Felicity effects. Under tensile loading, the I b -value exhibited a linear decrease, while step loading introduced complexities, including the Felicity effect. The b e -value, incorporating energy considerations, fluctuated, providing insights into micro-cracks and macro-cracks. Statistical analysis demonstrated a consistent decrease in the b e -value, emphasizing its potential for long-term monitoring. This study provides a comprehensive technique for assessing composite material fracture behavior, enhancing understanding for critical applications in hydrogen storage vessels and pressure pipes as well as advancing reliability and safety in industrial sectors.

This paper presents the results of inspecting tensile stress-loaded GFRP (glass fiber-reinforced polymer) samples using the Magnetic Recording Method (MRM). The MRM can be utilized solely to examine ferromagnetic materials. The modification was proposed in order to examine nonmagnetic composites. Ferromagnetic strips made of low-carbon steel DC01 were bonded to the surface using an adhesive composed of epoxy resin with the addition of triethylenetetramine. The modified method's feasibility was tested on six samples made of GFRP. The research procedure consisted of three steps. In the first step, a metal strip is glued at the top surface of each sample, and an array of 100 cylindrical permanent magnets is used to record a sinusoidal magnetic pattern on the strip. The initial residual magnetization is measured in the second step, and the samples are subjected to static stress. In the third step, the residual magnetization is measured one more time. Ultimately, the measurement results from the second and third steps are compared. Generally, the applied stress causes changes in the amplitude and frequency of the sinusoidal magnetization pattern. In the case of GFRP, the frequency changes have not been used for evaluation due to minimal variations. The statistical parameters (mean, median, max, and mode) of the RMS (root mean square) value of the sinusoidal pattern were calculated and analyzed. The analysis demonstrates that the modified method is suitable for providing unequivocal and exact information on the load applied to a nonmagnetic composite material. For the presented results, the applied load can be assessed unambiguously for the samples elongated up to 0.6%.

Composites are materials that are widely used in industry, including yachting, railway and aviation. The properties of these materials can be modified by changing the type of reinforcement, the type of matrix, as well as the use of additives in the form of fillers and nanofillers that improve their mechanical or specific parameters. Due to the fact that these materials are often used for important structures, computational models using FEM tools may not be sufficient to determine the actual strength parameters, and what is more, to check them during operation. When designing structures made of composite materials, it is necessary to use high safety factors due to their behavior under several different types of loads, which is still difficult to determine precisely. This situation makes these structures much heavier and characterized by much higher strength properties than those that would actually be needed. In this article, the Kolmogorov-Sinai (K-S) metric entropy was used to determine the transition from the elastic to the viscoelastic state in GFRP (glass fiber reinforced polymer) composite materials without and with the addition of nanoaluminum, during a static tensile test. Additionally, the acoustic emission method was used during the research. This signal was further processed, and graphs were made of the number of events and the amplitude as a function of time. The obtained values were plotted on tensile graphs. The influence of the nano-filler on these parameters was also analyzed. The presented results show that it is possible to determine additional parameters affecting the strength of the structure for any composite materials.

This study presents an experimental framework with seventeen beams to investigate the impact of loading type, configuration, and through-bolt anchorage on LC-GFRP (Low-Cost Glass-Fiber-Reinforced Polymer) confinement performance. Beams underwent three-point and four-point bending, with LC-GFRP applied in various ways, including U-shaped, side-bonded, and fully wrapped, with and without anchors. The performance of LC-GFRP was compared to CFRP (Carbon-Fiber-Reinforced Polymer) and sisal wraps. LC-GFRP in side-bonded and U-shaped configurations without anchors under three-point bending showed no shear failure, while those under four-point bending without anchors experienced shear failure. With anchors, U-shaped configurations successfully prevented shear failure. The side-bonded, U-shaped, and U-shaped configurations along the full span with anchors demonstrated peak capacity enhancements of 72.11%, 43.66%, and 68.39% higher improvements than the corresponding configurations without anchors, respectively. Wrapping all sides of the beam with LC-GFRP or CFRP prevented shear failure without additional anchors, with complete wrapping being the most efficient method. When anchors were used, significant capacity enhancements were observed. Existing shear strength prediction models were evaluated, highlighting the need for more tailored expressions for LC-GFRP confinement, especially for non-U-shaped configurations.

This research aims to address a post-earthquake urgent strengthening measure to enhance the residual seismic capacity of earthquake-damaged reinforced concrete wall structures with coupling beams. The study consists of a series of tests on half-scale prototype coupling beams with various detailing options, including confined with reduced confinement, partially confined, and unconfined bundles, under cyclic loading conditions. The methodology employed involved subjecting the specimens to displacement-controlled reversal tests, and carefully monitoring their response using strain gauges and potentiometers. The main results obtained reveal that GFRP wrapping significantly enhances the seismic performance of earthquake-damaged coupling beams, even in cases where specimens experienced strength loss and main reinforcement rupture. The strengthened beams exhibit commendable ductility, maintaining high levels of deformation capacity, and satisfying the requirements of relevant seismic design codes. The significance of the study lies in providing valuable insights into the behavior and performance of damaged coupling beams and assessing the effectiveness of GFRP wrapping as a rapid and practical post-earthquake strengthening technique. The findings can be particularly useful for developing urgent post-earthquake strengthening strategies for high-rise buildings with structural walls. The method may be particularly useful for mitigating potential further damage in aftershocks and eventual collapse. In conclusion, this study represents a significant advancement in understanding the post-earthquake behaviors of coupling beams and provides valuable guidance for practitioners in making informed decisions regarding post-earthquake strengthening projects. The findings contribute to the overall safety and resilience of structures in earthquake-prone regions.

The present work studies the response to hygrothermal ageing of natural fibre composites (NFCs) against synthetic fibre composites when using three different types of polymers as matrices. For ageing, coupons were fully immersed in distilled water at 23, 40, and 60 °C for a total ageing period of 56 days. Flax fibre-reinforced composites, using two recyclable polymer systems: (i) a bio-based recyclable epoxy and (ii) an acrylic-based liquid thermoplastic resin, were tested against conventional glass fibre-reinforced composites employing a synthetic (petroleum-based) epoxy. Different fibre/polymer matrix material combinations were tested to evaluate the effects of hygrothermal ageing degradation on the reinforcement, matrix, and fibre/matrix interface. The hygrothermal ageing response of unaged and aged composite coupons was assessed in terms of flexural and viscoelastic performance, physicochemical properties, and microscopy (SEM-Scanning Electron Microscopy).

Glass Fiber reinforced polymers (GFRPs) are widely used and play an important role in modern society. The multilayer structure of GFRPs can lead to delamination defects during production and service, which can have a significant impact on the integrity and safety of the equipment. Therefore, it is important to monitor these delamination defects during equipment service in order to evaluate their effects on equipment performance and lifespan. Microwave imaging testing, with its high sensitivity and noncontact nature, shows promise as a potential method for detecting delamination defects in GFRPs. However, there is currently limited research on the quantitative characterization of defect images in this field. In order to achieve visual quantitative nondestructive testing (NDT), we propose a 2D-imaging visualization and quantitative characterization method for delamination defects in GFRP, and realize the combination of visual detection and quantitative detection. We built a microwave testing experimental system to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. The results of the experiment indicate the effectiveness and innovation of the method, which can effectively detect all delamination defects of 0.5 mm thickness inside GFRP with high accuracy, the signal-to-background ratio (SBR) of 2D imaging can reach 4.41 dB, the quantitative error of position is within 0.5 mm, and the relative error of area is within 11%.

The work is aimed at studying the impact resistance of epoxy oligomer matrices (EO) modified with polysulfone (PSU) or polyethersulfone (PES) and glass fibers reinforced plastics (GFRP) based on them under low-velocity impact conditions. The concentration dependences of strength and fracture energy of modified matrices and GFRP were determined. It has been determined that the type of concentration curves of the fracture energy of GFRP depends on the concentration and type of the modifying polymer. It is shown that strength σ and fracture energy E M of thermoplastic-modified epoxy matrices change little in the concentration range from 0 to 15 wt.%. However, even with the introduction of 20 wt.% PSU into EO, the strength increases from 164 MPa to 200 MPa, and the fracture energy from 32 kJ/m 2 to 39 kJ/m 2 . The effect of increasing the strength and fracture energy of modified matrices is retained in GFRP. The maximum increase in shear strength (from 72 MPa to 87 MPa) is observed for GFRP based on the EO + 15 wt.% PSU matrix. For GFRP based on EO + 20 wt.% PES, the shear strength is reduced to 69 MPa. The opposite effect is observed for the EO + 20 wt.% PES matrix, where the strength value decreases from 164 MPa to 75 MPa, and the energy decreases from 32 kJ/m 2 to 10 kJ/m 2 . The reference value for the fracture energy of GFRP 615 is 741 kJ/m 2 . The maximum fracture energy for GFRP is based on EO + 20 wt.% PSU increases to 832 kJ/m 2 for GFRP based on EO + 20 wt.% PES-up to 950 kJ/m 2 . The study of the morphology of the fracture surfaces of matrices and GFRP confirmed the dependence of impact characteristics on the microstructure of the modified matrices and the degree of involvement in the process of crack formation. The greatest effect is achieved for matrices with a phase structure "thermoplastic matrix-epoxy dispersion." Correlations between the fracture energy and strength of EO + PES matrices and GFRP have been established.

In this paper results of the damage assessment of fiber-reinforced composite panels using guided wave propagation phenomenon are presented. For this purpose, non-contact elastic wave generation based on an air-coupled transducer (ACT) is utilised. Elastic wave sensing was based on a scanning laser Doppler vibrometer (SLDV). The problem of ACT slope angle for the effectiveness of elastic wave modes generation is analysed. It was shown that for an excitation frequency of 40 kHz it is possible to generate A 0 wave mode. The authors also investigated the damage sensitivity related to panel coverage area by elastic waves with large energy. An artificial damage in the form of Teflon inserts was utilised. Moreover, the influence of single and multiple acoustic wave sources on artificial damage localisation results was investigated. For this purpose RMS wave energy maps, statistical parameters, and damage indices are utilised. Different locations of ACTs and their influence on damage localisation results are investigated. A damage imaging algorithm based on wavefield irregularity mapping (WIM) has been proposed. This experimental study investigated how defects, in particular fiber misalignment, affect the mechanical behavior of glass fiber composites (GFRP) under compressive loading. GFRP cross-plies with three different types of fiber misalignment, namely a fold, a wave, and an in-plane undulation, were fabricated using the resin transfer molding process. The compressive tests were performed at four different temperatures, in order to investigate the role of a change in the matrix properties on the strength of the composite. The experiments showed that the defects, especially at lower temperatures, had a significant impact on the mechanical properties of the composite, exceeding the proportion of the defects inside the composite. With increasing temperature, the damage mechanism changed from fiber-dominated to matrix-dominated and, in doing so, decreased the significance of fiber misalignment for the mechanical behavior.

Nowadays, the hybridization of natural and glass fiber has promised several advantages as a green composite. Nevertheless, their different characteristics lead to poor mechanical bonding. In this work, agel fiber and glass fiber was used as reinforcements, and activated carbon filler was added to the polymer matrix of a hybrid composite to modify its characteristics and mechanical properties. A tensile and bending test was conducted to evaluate the effect of three different weight percentages of activated carbon filler (1, 2, and 4 wt%). Vacuum-assisted resin infusion was used to manufacture the hybrid composite to obtain the high-quality composite. The results have revealed that adding 1 wt% filler yielded the most optimum result with the highest tensile strength, flexural strength, and elastic modulus, respectively: 112.90 MPa, 85.26 MPa, and 1.80 GPa. A higher weight percentage of activated carbon filler on the composite reduced its mechanical properties. The lowest test value was shown by the composite with 4 wt%. The micrograph observations have proven that the 4 wt% composite formed agglomeration filler that can induce stress concentration and reduce its mechanical performance. Adding 1 wt% filler offered the best dispersion in the matrix, which can enhance better load transfer capability.

Fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites play a vital role in the production of structural and semi-structural components for engineering applications. The drilling process is a commonly employed machining process for FRP composites to join the FRP structural elements. Usually, the FRP composites possess a heterogeneous nature because of their multi-layered structure, hybridization, and the presence of multi-phase materials. Hence, common problems like delaminations, fuzzing, buckling, cracking, matrix and fiber burning occur during the drilling operations. These problems cause dimensional inaccuracy, poor surface finish, and tool wear and reduce the mechanical strength of the composites. The optimum drilling parameters (drill geometry, speed, feed, and depth of cut) selection for the specific materials is good to achieve effective drilling performance and better surface quality of the holes. Yet, little study has been done on how all of these factors affect the size of the drilled hole. The majority of drilling studies on FRPCs in the past have focused on how to improve the hole quality by maximizing processing conditions, and there has been little discussion on the correlation between drilling conditions, physical properties, and production techniques. This is what motivated to review the characteristics and properties analysis of FRP composites. As a consequence of this research, it is anticipated that scientists and researchers would place a greater emphasis on the drilling characteristic of the workpieces made from FRPCs than on other attributes. This review clearly presents an overview of FRP composites drilling that had progressed from 2000 to 2021. The analysis of different drilling conditions and parameters like thrust force, drill geometry, temperature, speed, and feed also includes the post-drilling analysis through delaminations, thermal damage, and surface roughness. Furthermore, the recent developments in carbon, glass, and natural fiber reinforced polymer composites are studied with both conventional and nonconventional drilling techniques. As a new type of pre-reinforcement material for tunnel faces, glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) bolts can effectively and safely improve the stability of tunnel faces in soft surrounding rocks and speed up excavation. Therefore, in this paper, systematic research is carried out on the bond strength of GFRP bolts in tunnel faces and their relative pre-reinforcement parameters. Firstly, the effects of rebar diameter, anchorage length, and mortar strength on the bonding properties of GFRP bars were studied by indoor pull-out tests. The bond strength-slip curves under different working conditions were obtained, and the curves showed that the ultimate bond strength between GFRP bars and mortar was negatively correlated with the diameter of GFRP bars but positively correlated with the strength of the mortar. In addition, the increase in anchorage length led to a reduction in bonding strength. Secondly, inverse analysis was used to analyse the mechanical parameters of the bond performance of the anchor bars by the finite difference software FLAC3D, and the results indicated that 1/5 of the compressive strength of the GFRP bar grouting body can be taken as the ultimate bond strength to calculate the cohesive strength of the grout. Additionally, the formula of GFRP bar grouting body stiffness was revised. Finally, based on the results of laboratory tests and the inverse analysis, the numerical simulation analysis results showed that the optimal reinforcement configuration for a shallow buried tunnel face surrounded by weak rock is to use GFRP bars with a length of 17 m arranged in the center circle of the tunnel face with a reasonable reinforcement density of 1.0 bolt/m 2 . The calculation formula of the stiffness and cohesion strength of the GFRP bar grouting body and the reinforcement scheme proposed in this paper can provide a reference for the construction of shallowly buried rock tunnels in soft surrounding rock.

In the era of sustainable development, glass-fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) composites have made their way into modern engineering, construction, and building sectors due to their exponential characteristics. While considering the rapid growth and development in this sector, this research has assessed the relative environmental and techno-economic sustainability of two sorts of GFRP composite technologies: (a) filament winding and (b) pultrusion to effectively appraise their application, merits, and demerits. This study will help low-middle-income countries like Pakistan toward cleaner production, environmental management, and sustainable industrial development. The techno-economic sustainability is determined by using life cycle costing and techno-economic indicators, i.e., benefit-cost (B/C) ratio, net present value (NVP), internal rate of return (IRR), and payback period. The B/C ratio depicts the relationship between the relative cost and benefits of a technology, and NVP expresses the calculated present value of the future payback stream of a technological investment, while the IRR is an effective techno-economic indicators which can predict the efficacy of an investment, and the payback period is the time forecast for a technology to recover its investments. These techno-economic analytics showed that the net life-cycle cost performance, B/C ratio, and IRR are 5%, 7%, and 15% higher respectively for filament winding-based GFRP technology than the pultrusion-based manufacturing technology, whereas overall net life cycle benefits are about 80% greater for filament winding. Similarly, the payback time is shorter for filament winding compared to pultrusion. The environmental sustainability is determined, by employing a relative life cycle analysis (LCA) for both technologies. The system boundary for the study is "gate to gate," i.e., manufacturing phase, where these technologies are assessed for their environmental externalities. The functional unit of "1 kg finished product," i.e., manufactured by pultrusion and filament winding technology, and eight life cycle impact assessment (LCIA) categories; climate change potential (CCP), terrestrial eco-toxicity potential (TETP), ozone depletion potential (ODP), fossil resource depletion potential (FDP), acidification potential (AP), eutrophication potential (EP), particulate matter (PM) formation, and water consumption potential (WCP) have been selected. The significant ecological impact scores are determined in the categories of CCP (kg CO 2 eq.) as 10.8E + 00 and 5.01E + 00 and ETP (kg. 2,4-D eq.) as 1.26E-02 and 9.47E-03 and FDP (kg Oil eq.) as 3.96E + 00 and 2.59E + 00 for filament winding and pultrusion-based GFRP technologies, respectively. These LCIA results depicted that the ecological performance of filament winding technology is specifically better than pultrusion technology in the categories of EP, PM, and WCP, while, for all other life cycle impact categories, the pultrusion technology has depicted significantly lower impact potential and is environmentally more sustainable. With the extensive application of glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) in the field of high voltage insulation, its operating environment is becoming more and more complex, and the surface insulation failure has gradually become a pivotal problem affecting the safety of equipment. In this paper, nano-SiO 2 was fluorinated by Dielectric barrier discharges (DBD) plasma and doped with GFRP to enhance the insulation performance. Through Fourier Transform Ioncyclotron Resonance (FTIR) and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) characterization of nano fillers before and after modification, it was found that plasma fluorination can graft a large number of fluorinated groups on the surface of SiO 2 . The introduction of fluorinated SiO 2 (FSiO 2 ) can significantly enhance the interfacial bonding strength of the fiber, matrix and filler in GFRP. The DC surface flashover voltage of modified GFRP was further tested. The results show that both SiO 2 and FSiO 2 can improve the flashover voltage of GFRP. When the concentration of FSiO 2 is 3%, the flashover voltage increases most significantly to 14.71 kV, which is 38.77% higher than that of unmodified GFRP. The charge dissipation test results show that the addition of FSiO 2 can inhibit the surface charge migration. By the calculation of Density functional theory (DFT) and charge trap, it is found that grafting fluorine-containing groups on SiO 2 can increase its band gap and enhance its electron binding ability. Furthermore, a large number of deep trap levels are introduced into the nanointerface inside GFRP to enhance the inhibition of secondary electron collapse, thus increasing the flashover voltage.

The current study investigates the effect of a hybrid L-profile aluminium/glass-fiber-reinforced polymer stacking sequence under axial and lateral compression loads. Four stacking sequences are studied: aluminium (A)-glass-fiber (GF)-AGF, GFA, GFAGF, and AGFA. In the axial compression test, the aluminium/GFRP hybrid tends to crush in a more progressive and stable failure than the net aluminium and net GFRP specimens, with a relatively more stable load-carrying capacity throughout the experimental tests. The AGF stacking sequence was second, with an energy absorption of 145.31 kJ, following AGFA at 157.19 kJ. The load-carrying capacity of AGFA was the highest, with an average peak crushing force of 24.59 kN. The second-highest peak crushing force, 14.94 kN, was achieved by GFAGF. The highest amount of energy absorption, 157.19 J, was achieved by the AGFA specimen. The lateral compression test showed a significant increase in load-carrying and energy absorption capacity in the aluminium/GFRP hybrid specimens compared to the net GFRP specimens. AGF had the highest energy absorption with 10.41 J, followed by AGFA with 9.49 J. AGF also had the highest peak crushing force with 2.98 kN, followed by AGFA with 2.16 kN. The most crashworthy stacking sequence among the four variations tested in this experimental research was the AGF stacking sequence because of its great load-carrying capacity, energy absorption, and specific energy absorption in axial and lateral loading. The study provides greater insight into the failure of hybrid composite laminates under lateral and axial compression.

Due to its physical and mechanical properties, glass-fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) is utilized in wind turbine blades. The loads given to the blades of wind turbines, particularly those operating offshore, are relatively significant. In addition to the typical static stresses, there are also large dynamic stresses, which are mostly induced by wind-direction changes. When the maximum stresses resulting from fatigue loading change direction, the reinforcing directions of the material used to manufacture the wind turbine blades must also be considered. In this study, sandwich-reinforced GFRP materials were subjected to tensile testing in three directions. The parameters of the stress-strain curve were identified and identified based on the three orientations in which samples were cut from the original plate. Strain gauge sensors were utilized to establish the three-dimensional elasticity of a material. After a fracture was created by tensile stress, SEM images were taken to highlight the fracture's characteristics. Using finite element analyses, the stress-strain directions were determined. In accordance to the three orientations and the various reinforcements used, it was established that the wind turbine blades are operational.

The inverse Finite Element Method (iFEM) has recently gained much popularity within the Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) field since, given sparse strain measurements, it reconstructs the displacement field of any beam or shell structure independently of the external loading conditions and of the material properties. However, in principle, the iFEM requires a triaxial strain measurement for each inverse finite element, which is seldom feasible in practical applications due to both costs and cabling-related limitations. To alleviate this problem several techniques to pre-extrapolate the measured strains have been developed, so that interpolated or extrapolated strain values are inputted to elements without physical sensors: the benefit is that the required number of sensors can be reduced. Nevertheless, whenever the monitored components comprise regions of different thicknesses, each region of constant thickness must be extrapolated separately, due to thickness-induced discontinuities in the strain field. This is the case in many practical applications, especially those concerning fiber-reinforced composite laminates. This paper proposes to extrapolate the measured strain field in a thickness-normalized space, where the thickness-induced trends are removed; this novel method can significantly decrease the number of required sensors, effectively reducing the costs of iFEM-based SHM systems. The method is validated in a simple but informative numerical case study, highlighting the potentialities and benefits of the proposed approach for more complex application scenarios.

Honeycomb structure composites are taking an increasing proportion in aircraft manufacturing because of their high strength-to-weight ratio, good fatigue resistance, and low manufacturing cost. However, the hollow structure is very prone to liquid ingress. Here, we report a fast and automatic classification approach for water, alcohol, and oil filled in glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) honeycomb structures through terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS). We propose an improved one-dimensional convolutional neural network (1D-CNN) model, and compared it with long short-term memory (LSTM) and ordinary 1D-CNN models, which are classification networks based on one dimension sequenced signals. The automated liquid classification results show that the LSTM model has the best performance for the time-domain signals, while the improved 1D-CNN model performed best for the frequency-domain signals.

Based on the stiffness theory of wave spring, this paper proposes the wave springs made of glass fiber reinforced plastic (GFRP) and investigates the effect of the number of periods on the GFRP wave springs' stiffness and frequency response characteristics. First of all, five different periods of composite wave springs which have identical outside dimensions are designed. Afterwards, the load-displacement curves of the GFRP wave springs are obtained using a combination of experimental and finite element analysis (FEA). Finally, the frequency response characteristics of the GFRP wave springs are measured using a force hammer excitation, and the experiment results of a GFRP wave spring are compared with a metal helical spring. The results show that the stiffness of the GFRP wave spring decreases from 34.84 N/mm to 20.59 N/mm with the increase in the number of periods. As the number of periods increases, the vibration attenuation increases from 16.32 dB to 69.17 dB. The stiffness of the GFRP wave spring is increased by 90.30% and the weight is reduced by 26.78%. The vibration isolation interval and vibration attenuation amplitude of the GFRP wave spring are higher than the metal helical spring.

This paper reports the results of measurements of cutting forces and delamination in drilling of Glass-Fiber-Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) composites. Four different types of GFRP composites were tested, made by a different manufacturing method and had a different fiber type, weight fraction (wf) ratio, number of layers, but the same stacking sequence. GFRP samples were made using two technologies: a novel method based on the use of a specially designed pressing device and hand lay-up and vacuum bag technology process. The study was conducted with variable technological parameters: cutting speed v c and feed per tooth f z . The two-edge carbide diamond-coated drill produced by Seco Company was used in the experiments. Cutting-force components and delamination factor were measured in the experiments, and photos of the holes were taken to determine the delamination. In addition, modeling of cause-and-effect relationships between the technological drilling parameters v c and f z was simulated with the use of artificial neural network modeling. For all tested GFRP materials, an increase in f z led to an increase in the amplitude of cutting-force component F z . The lowest values of the amplitude of cutting-force component F z were obtained with the lowest tested feed per tooth value of 0.04 mm/tooth for all tested materials. It was observed that materials produced with the use of the specially designed pressing device were characterized by lower values of the cutting-force component F z . It was also found that the delamination factor increased with an increase in f z for all tested GFRP materials. A comparison of the lowest and the highest values of f z revealed that the lowest delamination factor increase was archived by the B1 material and amounted to about 12.5%. The error margin of the obtained numerical modeling results does not exceed 15%, so it can be concluded that artificial neural networks are a suitable tool for modeling cutting force amplitudes as a function of v c and f z . The study has shown that the use of the special pressing device during the manufacturing of composite materials has a positive effect on delamination.

Research on natural-fiber-reinforced polymer composite is continuously developing. Natural fibers from flora have received considerable attention from researchers because their use in biobased composites is safe and sustainable for the environment. Natural fibers that mixed with Carbon Fiber and or Glass Fiber are low-cost, lightweight, and biodegradable and have lower environmental influences than metal-based materials. This study highlights and comprehensively reviews the natural fibers utilized as reinforcements in polyester composites, including jute, bamboo, sisal, kenaf, flax, and banana. The properties of composite materials consisting of natural and synthetic fibers, such as tensile strength, flexural strength, fatigue, and hardness, are investigated in this study. This paper aims to summarize, classify, and collect studies related to the latest composite hybrid science consisting of natural and synthetic fibers and their applications. Furthermore, this paper includes but is not limited to preparation, mechanism, characterization, and evaluation of hybrid composite laminates in different methods and modes. In general, natural fiber composites produce a larger volume of composite, but their strength is weaker than GFRP/CFRP even with the same number of layers. The use of synthetic fibers combined with natural fibers can provide better strength of hybrid composite.

An adhesive based on a Fe 3 O 4 -nanoparticle (MNP)-doped epoxy resin was proposed for the development of detachable adhesive joints with GFRP substrates. The analysis of cryofractures showed that the increasing MNP content promotes a higher presence of larger aggregates and a lower sedimentation of nanoparticles due to the higher viscosity of the mixture. In this regard, the inclusion of expandable microspheres (MS) induces a more uniform dispersion of MNPs, reducing their sedimentation. The capability of the proposed adhesives for electromagnetic (EM) heating was also evaluated, with increases in temperature of around 100 °C at 750 A, enough to reach the T g of the polymer required to facilitate the adhesive detachment, which is around 80 °C. Finally, the lap shear strength (LSS) of 14 and 20 wt.% MNP samples was evaluated in a single-lap shear joint with simultaneous EM heating. The LSS values were reduced by 60-80% at 750 A, thus promoting successful adhesive joint detachment under EM heating.

This research aims to understand the simplified finite element (FE) model behavior for estimating the glass fiber reinforced polyester polymer (GFRP) structural response and studying its tensile properties. The simplified FE model has been developed using an equivalent single-ply transversely isotropic material model to estimate the multi-layer GFRP laminates tensile behavior. The linear elastic and a trilinear plasticity material formulation were adopted. The experimental study is conducted to determine the tensile properties of the equivalent single-ply model of the multi-layer laminates with the variation of layers number, stacking sequence, and fiber orientation. The tensile test specimen used E-glass fiber reinforcement and polyester resin (Yukalac 157 BQTN-EX) as the matrix. The hand layup method was used for the lamination procedure. The experimental results show that the nonlinearity might occur due to the imperfection and poor quality of the composite laminate. Therefore, the comparison of numerical simulation and the experimental results is conducted to understand the stress-strain behavior of the simplified FE model. Both models presented different characteristics and showed good agreement with the experimental results. The linear model can be adopted while the nonlinearity is not significantly identified. Furthermore, the plastic strain as a compensated constant should be defined thoroughly to conduct an accurate estimation using the trilinear plasticity model. Paediatric radiotherapy differs greatly from its practice in adults mainly because of the age (median age 6 years), which poses the problem of irradiation of healthy tissues in a growing organism, causing sequelae, difficult compliance and management of parents. These particularities require a dedicated education and specific organisation that was set progressively concerning indications, quality control, exhaustive collection of native dosimetry, long-term follow-up and clinical and translational research, as well as accreditations to practice paediatric radiotherapy, in close collaboration with the French society of child and adolescent cancer and leukaemia (SFCE), under the aegis of the French group of paediatric radiotherapy (GFRP). Structural health monitoring systems for composite laminates using guided ultrasonic waves become more versatile with the structural integration of sensors. However, the data generated within these sensors have to be transmitted from the laminate to the outside, where polyimide-based printed circuit boards play a major role. This study investigates, to what extent integrated polyimide inlays with applied sensor bodies influence the guided ultrasonic wave propagation in glass fiber-reinforced polymer specimens. For reasons of resource efficiency, narrow specimens are used. Numerical simulations of a damping-free specimen indicate reflections of the S0-mode at the integrated inlay. This is validated experimentally with an air-coupled ultrasonic technique and a 3D laser Doppler vibrometry measurement. The experimental data are evaluated with a method including temporal and spatial continuous wavelet transformations to clearly identify periodically occurring wave packages as edge reflections and distinguish them from possible inlay reflections. However, even when separating in-plane and out-of-plane movements using the 3D measurement, no reflections at the inlays are detected. This leads to the conclusion that polyimide inlays are well suited as substrates for printed circuit boards integrated into fiber-reinforced polymer structures for structural health monitoring, since they do not significantly influence the wave propagation.

Experimental and numerical studies of composite sandwich structures are warranted to reap the benefits of these materials when they are well designed. In the current research, new liquid thermoplastic and epoxy resins were used to fabricate four composite sandwich panels with two additional foam types and different densities in the wind turbine industry. A comprehensive comparison of three-point bending test results was made. Finite-element-based simulations using the ABAQUS program with Hashin's damage criterion were conducted to examine the failure behavior of the GFRP sandwich composites. The flexural behavior of the glass-fiber-reinforced plastic (GFRP) sandwich panels was investigated and compared with the experiments. The results show that the GF/PVC/Elium composite panel gives the highest load absorption, flexural strength, flexural modulus, core shear ultimate strength, and facing stress due to effect of the core foam and resin types. For the PVC foam core sandwich panel, using thermoplastic resin increased the flexural strength by 18% compared to that of the epoxy resin. The simulation results show excellent agreement between the finite-element-predicted failure loads and the experimental results.

In life service, the wind turbine blades are subjected to compound loading: torsion, bending, and traction, all these resulting in the occurrence of normal and tangential stresses. At some points, the equivalent stresses, due to overlapping effects provided by normal and shear stresses, can have high values, close to those for which the structure can reach to the failure point. If the effects of erosion and clashes with foreign bodies are added, the structure of the blade may lose its integrity. Considering both the complex shape of the blade and internal structure used, the mechanical behavior of the blade, such as the rigidity and resistance along the length of the blade, are usually determined with some uncertainty. This paper presents the results obtained in the non-destructive tests at static torsion of a scalable wind turbine blade. The objective of the paper was to determine the variation of the equivalent stress in the most stressed points of the blade, in relation to the torques applied. To determine the points with the highest stress, a finite element analysis was performed on the scalable wind turbine blade. Electrotensiometric transducers were mounted at different points of the blade, determining the main stresses in the respective points, as well as their variation during the torsion test, by subsequent calculations. The determinations were performed by applying the torque in both senses, in relation to the blade axis, thus concluding the values of the equivalent stress in the two cases.

This study aims to investigate the two-way shear strength of concrete slabs with FRP reinforcements. Twenty-one strength models were briefly outlined and compared. In addition, information on a total of 248 concrete slabs with FRP reinforcements were collected from 50 different research studies. Moreover, behavior trends and correlations between their strength and various parameters were identified and discussed. Strength models were compared to each other with respect to the experimentally measured strength, which were conducted by comparing overall performance versus selected basic variables. Areas of future research were identified. Concluding remarks were outlined and discussed, which could help further the development of future design codes. The ACI is the least consistent model because it does not include the effects of size, dowel action, and depth-to-control perimeter ratio. While the EE-b is the most consistent model with respect to the size effect, concrete compressive strength, depth to control perimeter ratio, and the shear span-to-depth ratio. This is because of it using experimentally observed behavior as well as being based on mechanical bases.

This study investigates the effects of deionized water, seawater, and solutions with various concentrations (5% and 10% by mass) of HCl and NaOH on the physical and mechanical properties of glass fiber reinforced polymers (GFRPs) through aging tests at 20 °C, 50 °C, and 80 °C. The tensile properties of GFRP were assessed by tensile testing at room temperature, and the strain during the tensile process was observed using digital image correlation. Additionally, the degradation mechanism was analyzed using scanning electron microscopy, and long-term tensile properties were predicted based on the Arrhenius model. The results indicated that the tensile strength of the GFRP decreased by 22%, 71%, and 87% after 56 d of exposure to 5% NaOH solutions at 20 °C, 50 °C, and 80 °C, respectively. The alkaline solutions had a more severe effect on the GFRP than deionized water, seawater, and acidic solutions. The experimental values and Arrhenius model predictions were found to be in good agreement with each other.

Glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) composites are promising composites often utilized in coastal infrastructure or used as an alternative to steel reinforcement in seawater sea sand concrete due to their excellent corrosion resistance. Understanding the degradation mechanism of GFRP in corrosion environments is significant for improving the long-term performance of GFRP materials. This paper presented the influences of seawater content and temperature on the properties of GFRP composites using the molecular dynamics method. The simulation results were validated by existing experiments on mechanical properties, interlaminar strength, and microstructures of an accelerated aging test of GFRP. The calculation results indicated that when seawater content of the matrix increased from 0% to 9.09% at 298 K, Young's modulus, shear modulus, and bulk modulus decreased 46.72%, 53.46%, and 41.75%, respectively. The binding energy of GFRP composites with seawater content of 2.15% at 353 K was 26.46% lower than that of unconditioned GFRP at 298 K. It revealed that the higher seawater content and temperature accelerated the degradation of the GFRP composites. The investigation provided a comprehensive understanding of the degradation mechanism of GFRP in seawater environments and provided a basis for the durability design of GFRP composites.

Fibre-reinforced polymeric composite materials are becoming substantial and convenient materials in the repair and replacement of traditional metallic materials due to their high stiffness. The composites undergo different types of fatigue loads during their service life. The drive to enhance the design methodologies and predictive models of fibre-reinforced polymeric composite materials subjected to fatigue stresses is reliant on more precise and reliable techniques for assessing their fatigue life. The influences of fibre volume fraction and stress level on the fatigue performance of glass fibre-reinforced polyester (GFRP) composite materials have been studied in the tension-tension fatigue scenario. The fibre volume fractions for this investigation were set to: 20%, 35%, and 50%. The tensile testing of specimens was performed using a universal testing machine and the Young's modulus was validated with four different prediction models. In order to identify the modes of failure as well as the fatigue life of composites, polyester-based GFRP specimens were evaluated at five stress levels which were 75%, 65%, 50%, 40%, and 25% of the maximum tensile stress until either a fracture occurred or five million fatigue cycles was reached. The experimental results showed that glass fibre-reinforced polyester samples had a pure tension failure at high applied stress levels, while at low stress levels the failure mode was governed by stress levels. Finally, the experimental results of GFRP composite samples with different volume fractions were utilized for model validation and comparison, which showed that the proposed framework yields acceptable correlations of predicted fatigue lives in tension-tension fatigue regimes with experimental ones.

Gutters made of glass-fibre-reinforced polymer (GFRP) are usually produced with a three-millimetre thickness. The fillers are mixed into unsaturated polyester (UP) resin, which is intended to make the composite material more affordable. This study aims to examine the effects of the addition of alumina trihydrate (ATH), calcium carbonate (CC), and a mixture of ATH and CC of 15 and 30 parts per hundredweight of resins (PHR) on the material properties of the three-millimetre-thick three-layered GFRP composites. The properties observed included physical properties, namely, specific gravity and water absorption, chemical properties such as burning rate, and mechanical properties such as hardness, flexural strength, and toughness. The effects of the fillers on the voids and interfacial bond between the reinforcing fibre and matrix were analysed using the flexural fracture observation through scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results showed that the addition of fillers into the UP resin led to an increase in the density, hardness, flexural strength, modulus of elasticity, and toughness but a decrease in water absorption and burning rate in a horizontal position. This information can be helpful for manufacturers of gutters made of GFRP in selecting the appropriate constituent materials while considering the technical and economic properties.

The application of fibre-reinforced polymers (FRP) for strengthening timber structures has proven its efficiency in enhancing load-bearing capacity and, in some cases, the stiffness of structural elements, thus providing cost-effective and competitive alternatives both in new design and retrofitting existing historical buildings. Over the last few decades, several reinforcing materials and techniques evolved, and considerable progress was made in numerical modelling, especially using the finite element method. As this field of research has become extensive and diversified, as well as numerous contradicting results have emerged, a thorough review is necessary. This manuscript covers the topics of historical preliminaries, reinforcing with carbon and glass fibre composites, bond characteristics, main reinforcing techniques, modelling of knots, and the effects of the fibre waviness on the composite behaviour. A detailed overview is given on the experimental and numerical investigation of mechanics of strengthened beams. A one-of-a-kind table is presented that compares the stiffness improvement observed in several studies with analytical estimates. Attention is drawn to a number of challenges that have arisen, e.g., the moderate stiffness enhancement, composite-to-wood interface, modelling of knots, and strengthening of defected timber members. This paper can be used as a starting point for future research and engineering projects.

Materials such as high performance (HPC) or ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC), and fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) reinforcement can be used to improve the resource efficiency in concrete construction by, for example, enabling the production of thin-walled structures. When building filigree concrete beams two essential factors must be considered: the low stiffness of the structure and the bond between the materials. By prestressing the structural stiffness is improved while an adequate concrete cover ensures sufficient bond strength. Based on this the bending behaviour of prestressed T-shaped beams reinforced with FRP, focussing on determining the influence of four parameters on the bearing capacity, bond behaviour and failure mode, is investigated in this paper. Comprehensive experimental investigations prove the potential of the approach and show that a reduction of the web thickness down to 40 mm, a lower concrete quality, and the use of glass FRP instead of carbon FRP allow a more resource-efficient structure while the applied prestressing leads to a higher utilisation of the high performance materials.

The recent failure of buildings because of punching shear has alerted researchers to assess the reliability of the punching shear design models. However, most of the current research studies focus on model uncertainty compared to experimentally measured strength, while very limited studies consider the variability of the basic variables included in the model and the experimental measurements. This paper discusses the reliability of FRP-reinforced concrete slabs' existing punching shear models. First, more than 180 specimens were gathered. Second, available design codes and simplified models were selected and used in the calculation. Third, several reliability methods were conducted; therefore, three methods were implemented, including the mean-value first-order second moment (MVFOSM) method, the first-order second moment (FOSM) method, and the second-order reliability method (SORM). A comparison between the three methods showed that the reliability index calculated using the FOSM is quite similar to that using SORM. However, FOSM is simpler than SORM. Finally, the reliability and sensitivity of the existing strength models were assessed. At the same design point, the reliability index varied significantly. For example, the most reliable was the JSCE, with a reliability index value of 4.78, while the Elgendy-a was the least reliable, with a reliability index of 1.03. The model accuracy is the most significant parameter compared to other parameters, where the sensitivity factor varied between 67% and 80%. On the other hand, the column dimension and flexure reinforcement are the least significant parameters compared to other parameters where the sensitivity factor was 0.4% and 0.3%, respectively.

The usage of glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) composite cross-arms in transmission towers is relatively new compared to wood timber cross-arms. In this case, many research works conducted experiments on composite cross-arms, either in coupon or full-scale size. However, none performed finite element (FE) analyses on full-scale composite cross-arms under actual working load and broken wire conditions. Thus, this work evaluates the performance of glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) composite cross-arm tubes in 275 kV transmission towers using FE analysis. In this study, the performance analysis was run mimicking actual normal and broken wire conditions with five and three times more than working loads (WL). The full-scale assembly load test experiment outcomes were used to validate the FE analysis. Furthermore, the mechanical properties values of the GFRP composite were incorporated in simulation analysis based on the previous experimental work on coupons samples of GFRP tubes. Additionally, parametric studies were performed to determine the ultimate applied load and factor of safety for both normal and broken wire loading conditions. This research discovered that the GFRP composite cross-arm could withstand the applied load of five times and three times working load (WL) for normal and broken wire conditions, respectively. In addition, the factor of safety of tubes was 1.08 and 1.1 for normal and broken wire conditions, respectively, which can be considered safe to use. Hence, the composite cross-arms can sustain load two times more than the design requirement, which is two times the working load for normal conditions. In future studies, it is recommended to analyze the fatigue properties of the composite due to wind loading, which may induce failure in long-term service.

Fibre-reinforced polymer materials (FRP) are increasingly used to reinforce structural elements. Due to this, it is possible to increase the load-bearing capacity of polymer, wooden, concrete, and metal structures. In this article, the authors collected all the crucial aspects that influence the behaviour of concrete elements reinforced with FRP. The main types of FRP, their characterization, and their impact on the load-carrying capacity of a composite structure are discussed. The most significant aspects, such as type, number of FRP layers including fibre orientation, type of matrix, reinforcement of concrete columns, preparation of a concrete surface, fire-resistance aspects, recommended conditions for the lamination process, FRP laying methods, and design aspects were considered. Attention and special emphasis were focused on the description of the current research results related to various types of concrete reinforced with FRP composites. To understand which aspects should be taken into account when designing concrete reinforcement with composite materials, the main guidelines are presented in tabular form.

Although much research has been carried out in the field of the milling of GFRP (Glass Fibre Reinforced Polymer) composites, the complexity of the process is such that it is still not mastered in many industrial cases. The current work is aimed at studying the influence of three different geometries of PCD (PolyCrystalline Diamond) and cemented tungsten carbide cutting tools during the up-milling of GFRP composites at fixed cutting conditions ( v c = 502 m/min and v f = 420 mm/min). Delamination, cutting forces and tool wear are compared at the fresh and worn states, and the correlation between the lifespan and the cost of the cutting tool is analysed. The main wearing phase of the tools was performed under the conditions of production in the facilities of a company (Sobelcomp, Loncin, Belgium). The results indicate that the PCD tool with the straight edge, inclined peripheral tooth shape produces the smallest total cutting force and less delamination (shortest and lowest number of delaminated fibres) at both fresh and worn states. Moreover, the grinding ability of PCD makes the cutting tool cost per part lower than for cemented carbide. The PCD tool is therefore the best option to mill GFRP parts.
