Road traffic crashes are common occurrences that create substantial losses and hazards to society. A complex interaction of components, including drivers, vehicles, roads, and the environment, can impact the causes of these crashes. Due to its complexity, crash identification, and prediction research over large-scale areas faces several obstacles, including high costs and challenging data collecting. This study offers a method for large-scale road network crash risk identification based on open-source data, given that roadways' horizontal and vertical geometric alignment is crucial in highway traffic crashes. This methodology includes a comprehensive technique for feature extraction from horizontal curves (H-curves) and vertical curves (V-curves) and a novel way of combining the XGBoost model's attributes with the Harris Hawks Optimization (HHO) algorithm-referred to as the HHO-XGBoost model. Using this model on the road geometry-crash risk dataset developed specifically for this study, the HHO approach adaptively identifies the optimal set of XGBoost hyperparameters and yields favorable outcomes. This study creates a three-dimensional road geometry database that may be utilized for various road infrastructure management, operation, and safety in addition to completing a tiered risk analysis of "region-road-segment" for large-scale road networks. High electrical conductivity, along with high piezoresistive sensitivity and stretchability, are crucial for designing and developing nanocomposite strain sensors for damage sensing and on-line structural health monitoring of smart carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites. In this study, the influence of the geometric features and loadings of carbon-based nanomaterials, including reduced graphene oxide (rGO) or carbon nanofibers (CNFs), on the tunable strain-sensing capabilities of epoxy-based nanocomposites was investigated. This work revealed distinct strain-sensing behavior and sensitivities (gauge factor, GF) depending on both factors. The highest GF values were attained with 0.13 wt.% of rGO at various strains. The stability and reproducibility of the most promising self-sensing nanocomposites were also evaluated through ten stretching/relaxing cycles, and a distinct behavior was observed. While the deformation of the conductive network formed by rGO proved to be predominantly elastic and reversible, nanocomposite sensors containing 0.714 wt.% of CNFs showed that new conductive pathways were established between neighboring CNFs. Based on the best results, formulations were selected for the manufacturing of pre-impregnated materials and related smart CFRP composites. Digital image correlation was synchronized with electrical resistance variation to study the strain-sensing capabilities of modified CFRP composites (at 90° orientation). Promising results were achieved through the incorporation of CNFs since they are able to form new conductive pathways and penetrate between micrometer-sized fibers.

Three-dimensional point cloud evaluation is used in photogrammetry to validate and assess the accuracy of data acquisition in order to generate various three-dimensional products. This paper determines the optimal accuracy and correctness of a 3D point cloud produced by a low-cost spherical camera in comparison to the 3D point cloud produced by laser scanner. The fisheye images were captured from a chessboard using a spherical camera, which was calibrated using the commercial Agisoft Metashape software (version 2.1). For this purpose, the results of different calibration methods are compared. In order to achieve data acquisition, multiple images were captured from the inside area of our case study structure (an underpass in Wiesbaden, Germany) in different configurations with the aim of optimal network design for camera location and orientation. The relative orientation was generated from multiple images obtained by removing the point cloud noise. For assessment purposes, the same scene was captured with a laser scanner to generate a metric comparison between the correspondence point cloud and the spherical one. The geometric features of both point clouds were analyzed for a complete geometric quality assessment. In conclusion, this study highlights the promising capabilities of low-cost spherical cameras for capturing and generating high-quality 3D point clouds by conducting a thorough analysis of the geometric features and accuracy assessments of the absolute and relative orientations of the generated clouds. This research demonstrated the applicability of spherical camera-based photogrammetry to challenging structures, such as underpasses with limited space for data acquisition, and achieved a 0.34 RMS re-projection error in the relative orientation step and a ground control point accuracy of nearly 1 mm. Compared to the laser scanner point cloud, the spherical point cloud reached an average distance of 0.05 m and acceptable geometric consistency.

Purpose: This study aimed to assess the relationship between the geometric features of tibial eminence and susceptibility to noncontact anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries., Methods: Patients with unilateral noncontact knee injuries between 2015 and 2021 were consecutively enroled in this study. Based on knee magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and arthroscopic visualisation, patients were categorised into the case group (ACL rupture) and control group (ACL intact). Using MRI, the geometric features of tibial eminence were characterised by measuring the sagittal slopes, depth of concavity and coronal slopes of the inclined surfaces of the tibial spines. Univariate and multivariate logistic regressions were conducted to explore independent associations between quantified geometric indices of tibial eminence and the risk of noncontact ACL injuries., Results: This study included 187 cases and 199 controls. A decreased sagittal slope of the medial tibial spine (MTSSS) (combined group: odds ratio [OR]: 0.87 [0.82, 0.92], p < 0.001; females: OR: 0.88 [0.80, 0.98], p = 0.020; males: OR: 0.87 [0.81, 0.93], p < 0.001) and an increased depth of concavity in the lateral tibial spine (LTSD) (combined group: OR: 1.51 [1.24, 1.85], p < 0.001; females: OR: 1.65 [1.12, 2.43], p = 0.012; males: OR: 1.44 [1.11, 1.89], p = 0.007) were independent risk factors for noncontact ACL injuries. Moreover, a steeper coronal slope of the inclined surface of the medial tibial spine was a significant predictor of noncontact ACL injuries for males (MTSCS: OR: 1.04 [1.01, 1.08], p = 0.015) but not for females., Conclusion: Geometric features of tibial eminence, particularly a decreased MTSSS and an increased LTSD, were identified as independent risk factors for noncontact ACL injuries. Vascular geometry was proposed to be one risk factor of atherosclerosis (AS). When developing this hypothesis, the discussion of geometry-wall shear stress (WSS) has often been included. However, further exploration on how various geometric parameters were affecting WSS was needed. The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence degree of vessel geometric parameters and blood velocity on WSS. A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analyses of the vertebral and basilar arteries (VA and BA, respectively) was used. Twenty patients with no plaques or vessel wall thickening at the VA and BA were included. CFD analyses using both specific vessel models and flow conditions measured by ultrasound Doppler were performed. Subsequently, CFD results were post-processed with multiple linear regression to investigate numerical correlations between geometrical and flow parameters and WSS. The results of the multiple linear regression analysis further demonstrated that the BA proximal velocity was the most influential factor positively influencing BA WSS. The lower the WSS was, the stronger the influence brought by BA average diameter would be. The regression demonstrated that the contributions brought by average diameter and proximal velocity in lower WSS regions were lower than that in higher WSS regions. Tortuosity was only positively correlated with 97.5th WSS percentile, and vessel length and curvature showed no correlation with WSS. The use of a Machine Learning (ML) classification algorithm to classify airborne urban Light Detection And Ranging (LiDAR) point clouds into main classes such as buildings, terrain, and vegetation has been widely accepted. This paper assesses two strategies to enhance the effectiveness of the Deep Learning (DL) classification algorithm. Two ML classification approaches are developed and compared in this context. These approaches utilize the DL Pipeline Network (DLPN), which is tailored to minimize classification errors and maximize accuracy. The geometric features calculated from a point and its neighborhood are analyzed to select the features that will be used in the input layer of the classification algorithm. To evaluate the contribution of the proposed approach, five point-clouds datasets with different urban typologies and ground topography are employed. These point clouds exhibit variations in point density, accuracy, and the type of aircraft used (drone and plane). This diversity in the tested point clouds enables the assessment of the algorithm's efficiency. The obtained high classification accuracy between 89% and 98% confirms the efficacy of the developed algorithm. Finally, the results of the adopted algorithm are compared with both rule-based and ML algorithms, providing insights into the positioning of DL classification algorithms among other strategies suggested in the literature.

Understanding the binding behavior and conformational dynamics of intrinsically disordered proteins (IDPs) is crucial for unraveling their regulatory roles in biological processes. However, their lack of stable 3D structures poses challenges for analysis. To address this, we propose an algorithm that explores IDP binding behavior with protein complexes by extracting topological and geometric features from the protein surface model. Our algorithm identifies a geometrically favorable binding pose for the IDP and plans a feasible trajectory to evaluate its transition to the docking position. We focus on IDPs from Homo sapiens and Mus-musculus, investigating their interaction with the Plasmodium falciparum (PF) pathogen associated with malaria-related deaths. We compare our algorithm with HawkDock and HDOCK docking tools for quantitative (computation time) and qualitative (binding affinity) measures. Our results indicated that our method outperformed the compared methods in computation performance and binding affinity in experimental conformations.

Node localization in two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) space for wireless sensor networks (WSNs) remains a hot research topic. To improve the localization accuracy and applicability, we first propose a quantum annealing bat algorithm (QABA) for node localization in WSNs. QABA incorporates quantum evolution and annealing strategy into the framework of the bat algorithm to improve local and global search capabilities, achieve search balance with the aid of tournament and natural selection, and finally converge to the best optimized value. Additionally, we use trilateral localization and geometric feature principles to design 2D (QABA-2D) and 3D (QABA-3D) node localization algorithms optimized with QABA, respectively. Simulation results show that, compared with other heuristic algorithms, the convergence speed and solution accuracy of QABA are greatly improved, with the highest average error of QABA-2D reduced by 90.35% and the lowest by 17.22%, and the highest average error of QABA-3D reduced by 75.26% and the lowest by 7.79%.

The design of machine parts of different sizes and shapes has become relevant in the manufacturing industry which requires five-axis machine tools of high dynamic performance; different machining test pieces have been used to test and reflect the machine tool's performance. The S-shaped is still under development and consideration of which a new test piece better than the S-shaped part has been recommended to be put forward making the NAS979 the only standardized test piece; however, it has some limitations. Hence, this study proposes a new test piece to objectively satisfy the demand for machine tools with higher dynamic performance, which shows much improvement over the standard NAS979 and is the best alternative to the S-shaped test piece, and it combines the geometric and kinematic features of both test pieces. Geometrically, it has non-uniform surface continuity, variable twist angle, and variable curvature; and the cutting tool moves in close and opened angles along the tool path; there is sudden rise and fall of axes' velocity, acceleration, and jerk with much impact during machining which makes the S-cone test piece be machined by only five-axis machine tools with high dynamic performance, and has a better dynamic performance identification effect than the S-shaped test piece based on the trajectory test. As the technology of high-precision 3D laser scanning becomes increasingly prevalent in the fields of hydraulic building modeling and deformation monitoring, the quality of point clouds plays an increasingly crucial role in data processing. This paper investigates an automatic extraction method of anchor rod points based on geometric features, which focuses on the influence of anchor rod points and mixed pixels in the data of an underground powerhouse of a pumped storage power station on modeling and deformation monitoring during the construction period. This workflow consists of two steps that can automatically extract anchor rod points from high-density point cloud data. Triangular mesh features in the local neighborhood and the parameters of the anchor rods are used to locate the anchor rod in downsampled data, and curvature features are used to extract anchor rod points precisely. The experiment of extracting anchor rods shows that the accuracy of this method of initial identification is 97.2%. Furthermore, precise extraction based on curvature curve fitting is applicable. This method can accurately separate the three types of anchor rods from the dense point cloud on the rough surface of a cavern roof; the false-extraction rate of anchor rod points is about 0.11% to 5.09%. This method can provide high-quality and dependable data sources for the precise registration, modeling and deformation analysis of point clouds in a construction cavern.

Hemodialysis is an important means to maintain life in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Approximately 76.8% of patients who begin hemodialysis do so through catheters, which play vital roles in the delivery of hemodialysis to patients. During the past decade, the materials, structures, and surface-coating technologies of catheters have constantly been evolving to ameliorate catheter-related problems, such as recirculation, thrombosis, catheter-related infections, and malfunction. In this study, based on the commercial GDK catheter, six catheter models (GDK, GDK1, GDK2, GDK3, GDK4, and GDK5) with different lumen diameters and different geometric features of side holes were established, and computational flow dynamics (CFD) were used to measure flow rate, shear stress, residence time (RT), and platelet lysis index (PLI). These six catheters were then printed with polycarbonate PC using 3D printing technology to verify recirculation rates. The results indicated that: (1) the catheter with a 5.5 mm outer diameter had the smallest average shear stress in the arterial lumen and the smallest proportion of areas with shear stress > 10 pa. With increasing catheter diameter, the shear stress in the tip volume became lower, the average RT increased, and the PLI decreased due to larger changes in shear stress; (2) the catheters with oval-shaped side holes had smaller shear stress levels than those with circular-shaped holes, indicating that the oval design was more effective; (3) the catheter with parallel dual side holes had uniformly distributed flow around side holes and exhibited lower recirculation rates in both forward and reverse connections, while linear multi-side holes had higher shear stress levels due to the large differences in flow around side holes. The selection of the material and the optimization of the side holes of catheters have significant impacts on hemodynamic performances and reduce the probability of thrombosis, thus improving the efficiency of dialysis. This study would provide some guidance for optimizing catheter structures and help toward the commercialization of more efficient HD catheters.

The type and ratio of abnormal red blood cells (RBCs) in blood can be identified through peripheral blood smear test. Accurate classification is important because the accompanying diseases indicated by abnormal RBCs vary. In clinical practice, this task is time-consuming because the RBCs are manually classified. In addition, because the classification depends on the subjective criteria of pathologists, objective classification is difficult to achieve. In this paper, an automatic classification method that is solely based on images of RBCs captured under a microscope and processed using machine learning (ML) is proposed. The size and hemoglobin abnormalities of RBCs were classified by optimizing the criteria used in clinical practice. For morphologically abnormal RBCs classification, used seven geometric features information (major axis, minor axis, ratio of major and minor axis, perimeter, circularity, number of convex hulls, difference between area and convex area) and five types of multiple classifiers (Support Vector Machine, Decision Tree, K-Nearest Neighbor, Random Forest, and Adaboost models). Among was categorized using SVM, highly accurate results (99.9%) were obtained. Epilepsy is a neurological disorder that is characterized by transient and unexpected electrical disturbance of the brain. Seizure detection by electroencephalogram (EEG) is associated with the primary interest of the evaluation and auxiliary diagnosis of epileptic patients. The aim of this study is to establish a hybrid model with improved particle swarm optimization (PSO) and a genetic algorithm (GA) to determine the optimal combination of features for epileptic seizure detection. First, the second-order difference plot (SODP) method was applied, and ten geometric features of epileptic EEG signals were derived in each frequency band (δ, θ, α and β), forming a high-dimensional feature vector. Secondly, an optimization algorithm, AsyLnCPSO-GA, combining a modified PSO with asynchronous learning factor (AsyLnCPSO) and the genetic algorithm (GA) was proposed for feature selection. Finally, the feature combinations were fed to a naïve Bayesian classifier for epileptic seizure and seizure-free identification. The method proposed in this paper achieved 95.35% classification accuracy with a tenfold cross-validation strategy when the interfrequency bands were crossed, serving as an effective method for epilepsy detection, which could help clinicians to expeditiously diagnose epilepsy based on SODP analysis and an optimization algorithm for feature selection.

In this study, an attempt has been made to develop an automated muscle fatigue detection system using cyclostationary based geometric features of surface electromyography (sEMG) signals. For this purpose, signals are acquired from fifty-eight healthy volunteers under dynamic muscle fatiguing contractions. The sEMG signals are preprocessed and the epochs of signals under nonfatigue and fatigue conditions are considered for the analysis. A computationally effective Fast Fourier transform based accumulation algorithm is adapted to compute the spectral correlation density coefficients. The boundary of spectral density coefficients in the complex plane is obtained using alpha shape method. The geometric features, namely, perimeter, area, circularity, bending energy, eccentricity and inertia are extracted from the shape and the machine learning models based on multilayer perceptron (MLP) and extreme learning machine (ELM) are developed using these biomarkers. The results show that the cyclostationarity increases in fatigue condition. All the extracted features are found to have significant difference in the two conditions. It is found that the ELM model based on prominent features classifies the sEMG signals with a maximum accuracy of 94.09% and F-score of 93.75%. Therefore, the proposed approach appears to be useful for analysing the fatiguing contractions in neuromuscular conditions.

Purpose: Early detection is significant to reduce lung cancer-related death. Computer-aided detection system (CADs) can help radiologists to make an early diagnosis. In this paper, we propose a novel 3D gray density coding feature (3D GDC) and fuse it with extracted geometric features. The fusion feature and random forest are used for benign-malignant pulmonary nodule classification on Chest CT., Methods: First, a dictionary model is created to acquire codebook. It is used to obtain feature descriptors and includes 3D block database (BD) and distance matrix clustering centers. 3D BD is balanced and randomly selecting from benign and malignant pulmonary nodules of training data. Clustering centers is got by clustering the distance matrix, which is the distance between every two blocks in 3D BD. Then, feature descriptor is obtained by coding the pulmonary nodule with codebook, and 3D GDC feature is the result of histogram statistics on feature descriptor. Second, geometric features are extracted for fusion feature. Finally, random forest is performed for benign-malignant pulmonary nodule classification with fusion feature of the 3D gray density coding feature and the geometric features., Results: We verify the effectiveness of our method on the public LIDC-IDRI dataset and the private ZSHD dataset. For LIDC-IDRI dataset, compared with other state-of-the-art methods, we achieve more satisfactory results with 93.17 ± 1.94% for accuracy and 97.53 ± 1.62% for AUC. As for private ZSHD dataset, it contains a total of 238 lung nodules from 203 patients. The accuracy and AUC achieved by our method are 90.0% and 93.15%., Conclusions: The results show that our method can provide doctors with more accurate results of benign-malignant pulmonary nodule classification for auxiliary diagnosis, and our method is more interpretable than 3D CNN methods, which can provide doctors with more auxiliary information., (© 2021 American Association of Physicists in Medicine.)

Background: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by the impairment of facial expression, known as hypomimia. Hypomimia has serious impacts on patients' ability to communicate, and it is difficult to detect at early stages of the disease. Furthermore, due to bradykinesia or other reasons, it is inconvenient for PD patients to visit the hospital. Therefore, it is appealing to develop an auxiliary diagnostic method that remotely detects hypomimia., Methods: We proposed an automatic detection system for Parkinson's hypomimia based on facial expressions (DSPH-FE). DSPH-FE provides a convenient remote service for those who potentially suffer from hypomimia and only requires patients to input their facial videos. Specifically, patients can detect hypomimia through two aspects: geometric features and texture features. Geometric features focus on visually representing structures of facial muscles. Facial expression factors (FEFs) are used as the first metric to quantify the current activation state of the facial muscles. Facial expression change factors (FECFs) are subsequently used as the second metric to calculate the moving trajectories of the activation states in the videos. Geometric features primarily concentrate on spatial information, with little involvement of temporal information. Thus, the extended histogram of oriented gradients (HOG) algorithm is introduced. This algorithm can extract texture features within multiple continuous frames and incorporate the temporal information into the features. Finally, these features are applied to four machine learning algorithms to model the relationship between these features and hypomimia., Results: The DSPH-FE detection system achieved the best performance when concatenating geometric features and texture features, resulting in a F1 score of 0.9997. The best F1 scores achieved with geometric features and texture features were 0.8286 and 0.9446, respectively. This indicated that both geometric features and texture features have an ability to predict hypomimia, and demonstrated that temporal information can boost the model performance. Thus, DSPH-FE is an effective supportive tool in the medical management of PD patients., Conclusions: Comprehensive experiments demonstrated that proposed features fit well with real-world videos and are beneficial in the clinical diagnosis of hypomimia. Attention recognition plays a vital role in providing learning support for children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). The unobtrusiveness of face-tracking techniques makes it possible to build automatic systems to detect and classify attentional behaviors. However, constructing such systems is a challenging task due to the complexity of attentional behavior in ASD. This paper proposes a face-based attention recognition model using two methods. The first is based on geometric feature transformation using a support vector machine (SVM) classifier, and the second is based on the transformation of time-domain spatial features to 2D spatial images using a convolutional neural network (CNN) approach. We conducted an experimental study on different attentional tasks for 46 children (ASD n =20, typically developing children n =26) and explored the limits of the face-based attention recognition model for participant and task differences. Our results show that the geometric feature transformation using an SVM classifier outperforms the CNN approach. Also, attention detection is more generalizable within typically developing children than within ASD groups and within low-attention tasks than within high-attention tasks. Although visual SLAM (simultaneous localization and mapping) methods obtain very accurate results using optimization of residual errors defined with respect to the matching features, the SLAM systems based on 3-D laser (LiDAR) data commonly employ variants of the iterative closest points algorithm and raw point clouds as the map representation. However, it is possible to extract from point clouds features that are more spatially extended and more meaningful than points: line segments and/or planar patches. In particular, such features provide a natural way to represent human-made environments, such as urban and mixed indoor/outdoor scenes. In this paper, we perform an analysis of the advantages of a LiDAR-based SLAM that employs high-level geometric features in large-scale urban environments. We present a new approach to the LiDAR SLAM that uses planar patches and line segments for map representation and employs factor graph optimization typical to state-of-the-art visual SLAM for the final map and trajectory optimization. The new map structure and matching of features make it possible to implement in our system an efficient loop closure method, which exploits learned descriptors for place recognition and factor graph for optimization. With these improvements, the overall software structure is based on the proven LOAM concept to ensure real-time operation. A series of experiments were performed to compare the proposed solution to the open-source LOAM, considering different approaches to loop closure computation. The results are compared using standard metrics of trajectory accuracy, focusing on the final quality of the estimated trajectory and the consistency of the environment map. With some well-discussed reservations, our results demonstrate the gains due to using the high-level features in the full-optimization approach in the large-scale LiDAR SLAM.

Speeding is considered as one of the most significant contributing factors to severe traffic crashes. Understanding the associations between trip/driving/roadways features and speeding behavior is crucial for both researchers and practitioners. This research utilized naturalistic driving data collected by the Safety Pilot Model Deployment (SPMD) program and roadway features from a road inventory dataset - Highway Performance Monitoring System (HPMS), provided by the United States Department of Transportation (USDOT), to investigate the hidden rules that associated trip/driving/roadway features with speeding behavior. A classification-based association (CBA) algorithm was adopted to explore the hidden rules from two perspectives of speeding: speeding duration and speeding pattern. Results indicate that the combinations of longer trips (more than 60 min), driving on the roadways with a relatively higher functional class are highly associated with longer speeding events (speeding longer than 2 min). The moderate speeding events (speeding longer than 2 min and longer than 30 s) are found highly associated with the combination of driving on roadways with lower functional class, absence of a median and relatively short trip time (less than 30 min). The research also found the combinations of driving on roadways with relatively lower functional class, experienced congestion before a speeding event, and the presence of a median is a leading cause that triggers a higher speeding pattern (speeding more than 5mph above the speed limit). Furthermore, the moderate speeding pattern (speeding more than 1mph above the speed limit and less than 5mph of the speed limit) is associated with the combinations of factors like experiencing congestion before a speed event, driving on roadways with higher functional class and a relatively shorter trip (less than 30 min). The findings can help practitioners understand the composite effect of these factors more comprehensively and provide corresponding countermeasures to mitigate the negative consequences of speeding wherever possible. Continuous monitoring of frail individuals for detecting dangerous situations during their daily living at home can be a powerful tool toward their inclusion in the society by allowing living independently while safely. To this goal we developed a pose recognition system tailored to disabled students living in college dorms and based on skeleton tracking through four Kinect One devices independently recording the inhabitant with different viewpoints, while preserving the individual's privacy. The system is intended to classify each data frame and provide the classification result to a further decision-making algorithm, which may trigger an alarm based on the classified pose and the location of the subject with respect to the furniture in the room. An extensive dataset was recorded on 12 individuals moving in a mockup room and undertaking four poses to be recognized: standing, sitting, lying down, and "dangerous sitting." The latter consists of the subject slumped in a chair with his/her head lying forward or backward as if unconscious. Each skeleton frame was labeled and represented using 10 discriminative features: three skeletal joint vertical coordinates and seven relative and absolute angles describing articular joint positions and body segment orientation. In order to classify the pose of the subject in each skeleton frame we built a two hidden layers multi-layer perceptron neural network with a "SoftMax" output layer, which we trained on the data from 10 of the 12 subjects (495,728 frames), with the data from the two remaining subjects representing the test set (106,802 frames). The system achieved very promising results, with an average accuracy of 83.9% (ranging 82.7 and 94.3% in each of the four classes). This study analysed fruits of cranberry cultivars: Ben Lear, Bergman, Early Richard, Pilgrim and Stevens and compared them with wild-grown cranberry fruits. The fruits were characterised in terms of dimensions, colour, content of total phenolic compounds, flavonoids, proanthocyanidins and anthocyanins, and hydroxyl radical and trypsin inhibition activities. It was shown that the wild-grown cranberry fruits were characterised by much smaller dimensions and redder colour than fruits of the cranberry cultivars. The most phenolic compounds were found in the Early Richard fruits (357.6 mg/100 g fw), and they showed the highest antitrypsin activity. The highest anthocyanin content (60.6 mg/100 g fw) was determined in the Pilgrim fruits, while the Ben Lear fruits were the richest source of proanthocyanidins (27.9 mg/100 g fw). The antioxidant activity was correlated with the content of phenolic compounds, flavonoids and proanthocyanidins, while the antitrypsin activity was correlated with phenolic compounds and anthocyanin contents.

Background and Objective: Early detection is the important key to reduce breast cancer mortality rate. Detecting the mammographic abnormality as a subtle sign of breast cancer is essential for the proper diagnosis and treatment. The aim of this preliminary study is to develop algorithms which detect suspicious lesions and characterize them to reduce the diagnostic errors regarding false positives and false negatives., Methods: The proposed hybrid mechanism detects suspicious lesions automatically using connected component labeling and adaptive fuzzy region growing algorithm. A novel neighboring pixel selection algorithm reduces the computational complexity of the seeded region growing algorithm used to finalize lesion contours. These lesions are characterized using radiomic features and then classified as benign mass or malignant tumor using k-NN and SVM classifiers. Two datasets of 460 full field digital mammograms (FFDM) utilized in this clinical study consists of 210 images with malignant tumors, 30 with benign masses and 220 normal breast images that are validated by radiologists expert in mammography., Results: The qualitative assessment of segmentation results by the expert radiologists shows 91.67% sensitivity and 58.33% specificity. The effects of seven geometric and 48 textural features on classification accuracy, false positives per image (FPsI), sensitivity and specificity are studied separately and together. The features together achieved the sensitivity of 84.44% and 85.56%, specificity of 91.11% and 91.67% with FPsI of 0.54 and 0.55 using k-NN and SVM classifiers respectively on local dataset., Conclusions: The overall breast cancer detection performance of proposed scheme after combining geometric and textural features with both classifiers is improved in terms of sensitivity, specificity, and FPsI., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier B.V. In this paper, we propose a parking slot markings detection method based on the geometric features of parking slots. The proposed system mainly consists of two steps, namely, separating line detection and parking slot entrance detection. First, in the separating line detection stage, we propose a line-clustering method based on the line segment detection (LSD) algorithm. Our detecting and line-clustering algorithm can detect the separating lines that contain a pair of parallel lines with a fixed distance in a bird's eye view (BEV) image under diverse lighting and ground conditions. Consequently, parking slot candidates are generated by pairing the separating lines according to the width of the parking slots. In the parking slot entrance detection process, we propose a multiview fusion-based learning approach that can increase the number of training samples by performing a perspective transformation on the acquired BEV images. The proposed method was evaluated using 353 BEV images covering diverse parking slot markings. Experiments show that the proposed method can recognize typical perpendicular and parallel rectangular parking slots, and a precision of 97.4% and recall of 96.6% are achieved.

Protein-protein interactions and recognitions are essential for organisms to accomplish many cellular processes. The interface compositions of protein-protein complexes are the key to understand the molecular mechanisms of these processes. There are many studies on near native interface recognition for protein-protein interactions, but the formation mechanism of protein-protein interface is still ambiguous. Here, we propose a new probability method to understand protein-protein interface formation mechanism at amino acid level. The probability of two surface residues from two monomers as a true interface residue pair is estimated by their properties in the structures of protein monomers. Estimated residue pairs with interface possibilities combine together to form a protein-protein interface. The possibility values are integrated to discriminate the near native interface from non-near native ones. In this paper, five simple probability based methods are constructed for near native interface recognition based on several geometric and physicochemical descriptors. The performances are comparable to the best results reported previously, which suggests this is a promising way. In some mechanical engineering devices the novelty or inventive step of a patented design relies heavily upon how geometric features contribute to device functions. Communicating the functional interactions between geometric features in existing patented designs may increase a designer's awareness of the prior art and thereby avoid conflict with their emerging design. This paper shows how functional representations of geometry interactions can be developed from patent claims to produce novel semantic graphical and text annotations of patent drawings. The approach provides a quick and accurate means for the designer to understand the patent that is well suited to the designer's natural way of understanding the device. Through several example application cases we show the application of a detailed representation of functional geometry interactions that captures the working principle of familiar mechanical engineering devices described in patents. A computer tool that is being developed to assist the designer to understand prior art is also described.

The Iterative Closest Points (ICP) algorithm is the mainstream algorithm used in the process of accurate registration of 3D point cloud data. The algorithm requires a proper initial value and the approximate registration of two point clouds to prevent the algorithm from falling into local extremes, but in the actual point cloud matching process, it is difficult to ensure compliance with this requirement. In this paper, we proposed the ICP algorithm based on point cloud features (GF-ICP). This method uses the geometrical features of the point cloud to be registered, such as curvature, surface normal and point cloud density, to search for the correspondence relationships between two point clouds and introduces the geometric features into the error function to realize the accurate registration of two point clouds. The experimental results showed that the algorithm can improve the convergence speed and the interval of convergence without setting a proper initial value.

Breast-region segmentation is an important step for density estimation and Computer-Aided Diagnosis (CAD) systems in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). Detection of breast-chest wall boundary is often a difficult task due to similarity between gray-level values of fibroglandular tissue and pectoral muscle. This paper proposes a robust breast-region segmentation method which is applicable for both complex cases with fibroglandular tissue connected to the pectoral muscle, and simple cases with high contrast boundaries. We present a decision-making framework based on geometric features and support vector machine (SVM) to classify breasts in two main groups, complex and simple. For complex cases, breast segmentation is done using a combination of intensity-based and atlas-based techniques; however, only intensity-based operation is employed for simple cases. A novel atlas-based method, that is called localized-atlas, accomplishes the processes of atlas construction and registration based on the region of interest (ROI). Atlas-based segmentation is performed by relying on the chest wall template. Our approach is validated using a dataset of 210 cases. Based on similarity between automatic and manual segmentation results, the proposed method achieves Dice similarity coefficient, Jaccard coefficient, total overlap, false negative, and false positive values of 96.3, 92.9, 97.4, 2.61 and 4.77%, respectively. The localization error of the breast-chest wall boundary is 1.97 mm, in terms of averaged deviation distance. The achieved results prove that the suggested framework performs the breast segmentation with negligible errors and efficient computational time for different breasts from the viewpoints of size, shape, and density pattern.

Artifact rejection is a central issue when dealing with electroencephalogram recordings. Although independent component analysis (ICA) separates data in linearly independent components (IC), the classification of these components as artifact or EEG signal still requires visual inspection by experts. In this paper, we achieve automated artifact elimination using linear discriminant analysis (LDA) for classification of feature vectors extracted from ICA components via image processing algorithms. We compare the performance of this automated classifier to visual classification by experts and identify range filtering as a feature extraction method with great potential for automated IC artifact recognition (accuracy rate 88%). We obtain almost the same level of recognition performance for geometric features and local binary pattern (LBP) features. Compared to the existing automated solutions the proposed method has two main advantages: First, it does not depend on direct recording of artifact signals, which then, e.g. have to be subtracted from the contaminated EEG. Second, it is not limited to a specific number or type of artifact. In summary, the present method is an automatic, reliable, real-time capable and practical tool that reduces the time intensive manual selection of ICs for artifact removal. Premise of the Study: One of the many advantages offered by automated palynology systems is the ability to vastly increase the number of observations made on a particular sample or samples. This is of particular benefit when attempting to fully quantify the degree of variation within or between closely related pollen types. •, Methods: An automated palynology system (Classifynder) has been used to further investigate the variation in pollen morphology between two New Zealand species of Myrtaceae (Leptospermum scoparium and Kunzea ericoides) that are of significance in the New Zealand honey industry. Seven geometric features extracted from automatically gathered digital images were used to characterize the range of shape and size of the two taxa, and to examine the extent of previously reported overlap in these variables. •, Results: Our results indicate a degree of overlap in all cases. The narrowest overlap was in measurements of maximum Feret diameter (MFD) in grains oriented in polar view. Multivariate statistical analysis using all seven factors provided the most robust discrimination between the two types. •, Discussion: Further work is required before this approach could be routinely applied to separating the two pollen types used in this study, most notably the development of comprehensive reference distributions for the types in question.
