Reconstructing and segmenting cortical surfaces from MRI is essential to a wide range of brain analyses. However, most approaches follow a multi-step slow process, such as a sequential spherical inflation and registration, which requires considerable computation times. To overcome the limitations arising from these multi-steps, we propose SegRecon, an integrated end-to-end deep learning method to jointly reconstruct and segment cortical surfaces directly from an MRI volume in one single step. We train a volume-based neural network to predict, for each voxel, the signed distances to multiple nested surfaces and their corresponding spherical representation in atlas space. This is, for instance, useful for jointly reconstructing and segmenting the white-to-gray-matter interface and the gray-matter-to-CSF (pial) surface. We evaluate the performance of our surface reconstruction and segmentation method with a comprehensive set of experiments on the MindBoggle, ABIDE and OASIS datasets. Our reconstruction error is found to be less than 0.52 mm and 0.97 mm in terms of average Hausdorff distance to the FreeSurfer generated surfaces. Papaya ringspot virus (PRSV) is a devastating Potyvirus that causes papaya ringspot disease in Carica papaya plantations globally. In this study, the complete genome sequence of a PRSV isolate from Shankarpalli, Telangana, India, was reported and designated as PRSV-HYD (KP743981.1). The genome is a single-stranded positive-sense RNA comprising 10,341 nucleotides. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that PRSV-HYD is closely related to PRSV Pune (Aundh) isolate with 92 and 95% nucleotide and amino acid sequence identity, respectively. To develop infectious cDNA (icDNA), the complete nucleotide sequence of PRSV-HYD was cloned between the right and left borders in the binary vector pCB301 using Bgl II and Xma I restriction sites. Cauliflower mosaic virus (CaMV) double promoter (35S) was fused at the 5'-end and Avocado sunblotch viroid (ASBVd) ribozyme (RZ) sequence was fused to the 3' end to generate an authentic 3' viral end in the transcribed mRNAs. The icDNA generated was mobilized into the Agrobacterium tumefaciens EHA 105, and the agrobacterial cultures were infiltrated into the natural host C. papaya and a non-host Nicotiana benthamiana plants; both did not show any symptoms. In RT-PCR analysis of RNAs isolated from N. benthamiana , we could detect viral genes as early as 3 days and continued up to 28 days post infiltration. Alternatively, virion particles were purified from agroinfiltrated N. benthamiana plants and introduced into C. papaya by mechanical inoculation as well as by pinprick method. In both cases, we could see visible systemic symptoms similar to that of wild type by 40 days. Complexity of wastewater is the most challenging phenomenon on successful degradation of pollutant via any wastewater treatment regime. Upon availability of numerous techniques, Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOP) is the most promising technique for treating industrial wastewater. Higher operating cost is the most promising factor that possess challenge for the industrial scale usage of the AOP process. Combination of biological process with AOP helps in achieving sustainable degradation of toxic pollutant in the wastewater. AOP result in complete or partial degradation of toxic emerging pollutants with the help of free radicals like hydroxyl, superoxide, hydroperoxyl and sulphate radicals. In addition to this the presence of bio-enzymes and microorganisms helps in sustainable degradation of pollutant in an economical and environmentally friendly strategy. In this review, a detailed discussion was conducted on various AOP, focusing on catalytic ozonation, electrochemical oxidation, Sono chemical and photocatalytic processes. With the need for sustainable solutions for wastewater treatment, the use of AOP in conjunction with biological process has innumerous opportunities for not only wastewater treatment but also the production of high value by-products. Background and Purpose: Many patients with chronic pain report hypersensitivity not only to noxious stimuli, but also to other modalities including innocuous touch, sound, and light, possibly due to differences in the processing of these stimuli. The goal of this study was to characterize functional connectivity (FC) differences between subjects with temporomandibular disorders (TMD) and pain-free controls during a visual functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) task that included an unpleasant, strobing visual stimulus. We hypothesized the TMD cohort would exhibit maladaptations in brain networks consistent with multisensory hypersensitivities observed in TMD patients., Methods: This pilot study included 16 subjects, 10 with TMD and 6 pain-free controls. Clinical pain was characterized using self-reported questionnaires. Visual task-based fMRI data were collected on a 3T MR scanner and used to determine differences in FC via group independent component analysis., Results: Compared to controls, subjects with TMD exhibited abnormally increased FC between the default mode network and lateral prefrontal areas involved in attention and executive function, and impaired FC between the frontoparietal network and higher order visual processing areas., Conclusions: The results indicate maladaptation of brain functional networks, likely due to deficits in multisensory integration, default mode network function, and visual attention and engendered by chronic pain mechanisms., (© 2023 The Authors. Pulses are an important source of energy and protein, essential amino acids, dietary fibers, minerals, and vitamins, and play a significant role in addressing global nutritional security. The global pulse area, production, and average productivity increased from 1961 to 2020 (60 years). Pulses are usually grown under rainfed, highly unstable, and complex production environments, with substantial variability in soil and environmental factors, high year-to-year output variability, and variation in soil moisture. Since the last six decades, there is not much satisfactory improvement in the yield of pulses because of their cultivation in harsh environments, coupled with their continuous ignorance of the farmers and governments in policy planning. As a result, the global food supplies through pulses remained negligible and amounted to merely ~1.0% of the total food supply and 1.2% of the vegan food system. In this situation, protein-rich food is still a question raised at the global level to make a malnutrition-free world. Pulses are a vital component of agricultural biological diversity, essential for tackling climate change, and serve as an energy diet for vegetarians. Pulses can mitigate climate change by reducing the dependence on synthetic fertilizers that artificially introduce nitrogen (N) into the soil. The high demand and manufacture of chemical fertilizers emit greenhouse gases (GHGs), and their overuse can harm the environment. In addition, the increasing demand for the vegetal protein under most global agroecosystems has to be met with under a stressed rainfed situation. The rainfed agroecosystem is a shelter for poor people from a significant part of the globe, such as Africa, South Asia, and Latin America. Nearly, 83% [over 1,260 million hectares (ha)] of cultivated land comes under rainfed agriculture, contributing significantly to global food security by supplying over 60% of the food. In rainfed areas, the limitation of natural resources with the shrinking land, continuous nutrient mining, soil fertility depletion, declining productivity factor, constantly depleting water availability, decreasing soil carbon (C) stock, augmented weed menace, ecological instability, and reduced system productivity are creating a more challenging situation. Pulses, being crops of marginal and semi-marginal soils of arid and semi-arid climates, require less input for cultivation, such as water, nutrients, tillage, labor, and energy. Furthermore, accommodation of the area for the cultivation of pulses reduces the groundwater exploitation, C and N footprints, agrochemical application in the cropping systems, and ill effects of climate change due to their inherent capacity to withstand harsh soil to exhibit phytoremediation properties and to stand well under stressed environmental condition. This article focuses on the role of pulses in ecological services, human wellbeing, soil, environmental health, and economic security for advanced sustainability. Therefore, this study will enhance the understanding of productivity improvement in a system-based approach in a rainfed agroecosystem through the involvement of pulses. Furthermore, the present study highlighted significant research findings and policy support in the direction of exploring the real yield potential of pulses. Urban areas play a key role in the production of microplastics (MPs) and their entry into water bodies. This article reviews the literature on the sources, transport, and control of MPs in urban environments with the aim of clarifying the mechanisms underlying these processes. Major MP sources include atmospheric deposition, micro-litter, and tire and road wear particles (TRWPs). MPs deposited from the atmosphere are mostly fibers and may be particularly important in catchments without traffic. Littering and attrition of textiles and plastic products is another important MP source. However, the quantities of MPs originating from this source may be hard to estimate. TRWPs are a significant source of MPs in urban areas and are arguably the best quantified source. The mobilization of MPs in urban catchments is poorly understood but it appears that dry unconsolidated sediments and MP deposits are most readily mobilized. Sequestration of MPs occurs in green areas and is poorly understood. Consequently, some authors consider green/pervious parts of urban catchments to be MP sinks. Field studies have shown that appreciable MP removal occurs in stormwater quality control facilities. Street cleaning and snow removal also remove MPs (particularly TRWPs), but the efficacy of these measures is unknown. Among stormwater management facilities, biofiltration/retention units seem to remove MPs more effectively than facilities relying on stormwater settling. However, knowledge of MP removal in stormwater facilities remains incomplete. Finally, although 13 research papers reported MP concentrations in stormwater, the total number of field samples examined in these studies was only 189. Moreover, the results of these studies are not necessarily comparable because they are based on relatively small numbers of samples and differ widely in terms of their objectives, sites, analytical methods, size fractions, examined polymers, and even terminology. Global pollution is calling for advanced methods to remove contaminants from water and wastewater, such as TiO 2 -assisted photocatalysis.  The environmental applications of titanium dioxide have started after the initial TiO 2 application for water splitting by Fujishima and Honda in 1972. TiO 2 is now used for self-cleaning surfaces, air and water purification systems, microbial inactivation and selective organic conversion. The synthesis of titanium dioxide nanomaterials with high photocatalytic activity is actually a major challenge. Here we review titanium dioxide photocatalysis with focus on mechanims, synthesis, and applications. Synthetic methods include sol-gel, sonochemical, microwave, oxidation, deposition, hydro/solvothermal, and biological techniques. Bioremediation of heavy metals and dyes is one of the emerging techniques globally as it is evident from the numerous publications made by various research groups. Biofilm-assisted bioremediation is one of the trending approaches as it facilitates negatively charged extracellular polymeric substances which makes the bacteria resistant to the toxic chemicals. Genetic engineering of microbes will make them unique in the bioremediation process. This mini-review concentrates on source and toxic effects of heavy metals and dyes on aqueous and living beings. Further, the genetic improvement strategies for effective bioremediation are described. Verrucous carcinoma of oral cavity is a highly well differentiated variant of squamous cell carcinoma with a low potential for invasion and metastasis. It is prevalent in the tobacco quid chewing population in our region. In this observational study, we reviewed the medical case records of 58 patients treated for oral verrucous carcinoma staged T2 to T4a. All patients underwent wide excision of tumour which included marginal mandibulectomy in 22 and hemimandibulectomy in 23 patients along with neck dissection saving the accessory nerve and internal jugular vein. 5 patients were found to have bone involvement along the alveolar sockets. 11 patients had other associated premalignant lesions in oral cavity. Only 2 patients had lymph node metastasis without extra nodal spread in submandibular region. With a mean follow up of 6 years and minimum follow up of 1 year, 3 patients had local recurrence. All these 3 patients had bone involvement and 2 of them had lymph node metastasis on histopathological examination. 3 patients who had associated premalignant lesions developed second primary in oral cavity after 3 years. In our experience, verrucous carcinoma has good prognosis when treated by surgery. Bone involvement along alveolar sockets and associated oral premalignant lesions adversely affect the outcome. There was no difference in the outcome between selective and modified radical neck dissection. Therefore selective neck dissection (supraomohyoid) would be adequate in treating these patients. Access to clean water has reduced in recent years due to pollution and man-made activities. Wastewater treatment regimens are many such as electrocoagulation, adsorption, ozonation, membrane and advanced oxidation processes. Owing to economical, resource availability and ease of operation adsorption has upper hand over all other methods employed in wastewater treatment. Graphene based adsorbents attracted researchers due to their ability to play dual role as adsorbent and photo-catalysts. When it comes to removal of heavy metals and dyes graphene-based aerogels are successful. Graphene composites were predominantly synthesized by top-down and bottom-up approach methods. Graphene composites are mesoporous and have microporous structure on surface. Graphene has copper desorption efficiency of 90 % upon 10th consecutive cycle. Graphene based adsorbents have adsorption efficiency of 367, 246 and 106.3 mg -1 for lead, zinc and cadmium respectively. Though graphene possesses numerous applications, this review was devoted towards heavy metals removal from aqueous environment. In detail, the synthesis routes and interaction mechanism were explained and also the adsorption isotherms, kinetics were added. Diabetes mellitus has become a troublesome and increasingly widespread condition. Treatment strategies for diabetes prevention in high-risk as well as in affected individuals are largely attributed to improvements in lifestyle and dietary control. Therefore, it is important to understand the nutritional factors to be used in dietary intervention. A decreased risk of diabetes is associated with daily intake of millet-based foods. Pearl millet is a highly nutritious grain, nutritionally comparable and even superior in calories, protein, vitamins, and minerals to other large cereals, although its intake is confined to lower income segments of society. Pearl millet contains phenolic compounds which possess antidiabetic activity. Thus, it can be used to prepare a variety of food products for diabetes mellitus. Moreover, it also has many health benefits, including combating diabetes mellitus, cancer, cardiovascular conditions, decreasing tumour occurrence, lowering blood pressure, heart disease risk, cholesterol, and fat absorption rate. Therefore, the current review addresses the role of pearl millet in managing diabetes.

Onchocerciasis is causing blindness in over half a million people in the world today. Drug development for the disease is crippled as there is no way of measuring effectiveness of the drug without an invasive procedure. Drug efficacy measurement through assessment of viability of onchocerca worms requires the patients to undergo nodulectomy which is invasive, expensive, time-consuming, skill-dependent, infrastructure dependent and lengthy process. In this paper, we discuss the first-ever study that proposes use of machine learning over thermal imaging to non-invasively and accurately predict the viability of worms. The key contributions of the paper are (i) a unique thermal imaging protocol along with pre-processing steps such as alignment, registration and segmentation to extract interpretable features (ii) extraction of relevant semantic features (iii) development of accurate classifiers for detecting the existence of viable worms in a nodule. When tested on a prospective test data of 30 participants with 48 palpable nodules, we achieved an Area Under the Curve (AUC) of 0.85. Clinical Relevance- This is the first ever research effort of using thermal imaging in the assessment of viability of onchocerca worms and it resulted in a very high specificity>95% which makes it a promising modality to pursue further.

The release and prevalence of organic pollutants in an aqueous environment due to industrial discharges, agricultural operations, or inappropriate waste disposal is a huge threat to attaining sustainable development. As a result, wastewater treatment has attained a huge scope as it is evident from the number of articles published in recent years. Among the various techniques, bioremediation is one of the economical and eco-friendly means of wastewater treatment for the removal of organic pollutants. Microbial community and microalgae are the front runners of this process as they result in treated water and sludge or biomass formation. This mini review put forwards the types of organic pollutants and the bioremediation strategies using microbes and micro-algae, the role of genetically engineered microbes on the bio-remediation of organic pollutants and the recent applications of Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques that have been implemented for improving the efficiency of the methods. The gap between practicability and applicability of the bioremediation process was also identified in this review. Medical devices and surgical implants are necessary for tissue engineering and regenerative medicines. However, the biofouling and microbial colonization on the implant surface continues to be a major concern, which is difficult to eradicate and typically necessitates either antibiotic therapy or implant removal. As a result, efficient and eco-friendly bioinspired coating strategies for tethering functional materials or molecules on different medical substrates are highly desirable, especially for endowing versatile surface functionalities. Tannic acid (TA), a well-known tea stain polyphenol, has a good affinity for various substrates and actively inhibits the adhesion and colonization of microbes. Thus, functionalization of polymers, nanomaterials, metal-phenolic networks (MPNs), and proteins using TA bestows the end-products with unique binding or anchoring abilities on various implantable surfaces. This review addresses the recent advancements in the essential biomedical perspective of TA-based bioinspired universal surface coating technologies by focusing on their intrinsic features and ability to produce engineered functional composites. Further, the possible contributions of TA-based composites in antifouling and antibacterial applications on various biomedical substrates are outlined.

Zinc and its derivatives requirement increased to enhance human immunity against the different pandemics, including covid-19. Green synthesis is an emerging field of research. Zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles have been prepared from Anoectochilus elatus and characterized using absorption, vibrational and electron microscope analysis. They were carried for antibacterial, inflammatory control tendency, and potential antioxidant activities. The brine shrimp lethal assay tested the biologically derived nanomaterial toxicity and the lethal concentration (LC 50 ) is 599.79 µg/ml. The inhibition against the important disease-causing pathogens was measured against four-gram negative, gram-positive bacteria and two fungus pathogens. The nanomaterial exposed inhibition zone for gram-positive bacteria between 17 mm and 25 mm. The inhibition zone against gram-negative bacteria exists between 19 mm and 24 mm. The anti-inflammatory activity was assessed by inhibition of protein denaturation and protease inhibitory activity using nanomaterial. The antioxidant activity was examined using four assays for the therapeutic activities. The average size range of 60-80 nm nanoparticles has prepared and exposed the good biological activity between 50 µg/ml and 100 µg/ml. The comparative results of anti-inflammatory and antioxidant assay results with standards such as Aspirin and vitamin C exposed that two to three times higher concentrations are required for the fifty percent of inhibitions. COVID-19 is more virulent and challenging to human life. In India, the Ministry of AYUSH recommended some strategies through Siddha, homeopathy, and other methods to effectively manage COVID-19 (Guidelines for AYUSH Clinical Studies in COVID-19, 2020). Kabasura Kudineer and homeopathy medicines are in use for the prevention and treatment of COVID-19 infection; however, the mechanism of action is less explored. This study aims to understand the antagonist activity of natural compounds found in Kabasura Kudineer and homeopathy medicines against the SARS-CoV-2 using computational methods. Potential compounds were screened against NSP-12, NSP-13, NSP-14, NSP-15, main protease, and spike proteins. Structure-based virtual screening results shows that, out of 14,682 Kabasura Kudineer compounds, the 250395, 129677029, 44259583, 44259584, and 88583189 compounds and, out of 3,112 homeopathy compounds, the 3802778, 320361, 5315832, 14590080, and 74029795 compounds have good scoring function against the SARS-CoV-2 structural and nonstructural proteins. As a result of docking, homeopathy compounds have a docking score ranging from -5.636 to 13.631 kcal/mol, while Kabasura Kudineer compounds have a docking score varying from -8.290 to -13.759 kcal/mol. It has been found that the selected compounds bind well to the active site of SARS-CoV-2 proteins and form hydrogen bonds. The molecular dynamics simulation study shows that the selected compounds have maintained stable conformation in the simulation period and interact with the target. In this study, we assess the magnitude, type, and sources of microplastic (MP) in lake bottom sediments collected from freshwater Anchar Lake, located in the Kashmir Valley, Northwest Himalaya. The MP identification was done on twenty-four lake bottom sediment samples under a stereo-microscope, and their polymer compositions were characterized using an Attenuated Total Reflectance Fourier Transform Infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy. The study reveals that 606 ± 360 (average ± SD, n = 24) numbers of MP were present per kilogram of dry sediment samples, with fibers (91%), fragments/films (8%), and pellets (1%) dominating the shape groups. Polyamide (PA, 96%) was the dominant polymer composition present in the sediment samples, followed by polyethylene terephthalate (PET, 1.4%), polystyrene (PS, 1.4%), polyvinyl chloride (PVC, 0.9%), and polypropylene (PP, 0.7%). Polymer Hazard Index (PHI) and Pollution Load Index (PLI) were used to evaluate the quality of sediments. It was noted that high PHI values (>1000) were due to the presence of PVC polymer. According to PLI values, sediments in the Anchar lake are less contaminated with MP. The present study was carried out to determine the characteristics, distribution, and abundance of plastic debris in 25 sediment samples collected from the Poompuhar beach, southeast coast of India. The result reveals that the mean plastic debris abundance was 42 ± 27 particles/m 2 dry weight (dw) (1 SD, n = 25) with higher concentrations in the river mouth. The dominant shapes in the study area were fragment (70.7%), followed by fiber (20.7%), and pellet-shaped (8.6%). The dominant colors of the plastic debris were: white-colored (47%) followed by blue (28%) and green (14%). Brain surface analysis is essential to neuroscience, however, the complex geometry of the brain cortex hinders computational methods for this task. The difficulty arises from a discrepancy between 3D imaging data, which is represented in Euclidean space, and the non-Euclidean geometry of the highly-convoluted brain surface. Recent advances in machine learning have enabled the use of neural networks for non-Euclidean spaces. These facilitate the learning of surface data, yet pooling strategies often remain constrained to a single fixed-graph. This paper proposes a new learnable graph pooling method for processing multiple surface-valued data to output subject-based information. The proposed method innovates by learning an intrinsic aggregation of graph nodes based on graph spectral embedding. We illustrate the advantages of our approach with in-depth experiments on two large-scale benchmark datasets. The ablation study in the paper illustrates the impact of various factors affecting our learnable pooling method. The flexibility of the pooling strategy is evaluated on four different prediction tasks, namely, subject-sex classification, regression of cortical region sizes, classification of Alzheimer's disease stages, and brain age regression. Our experiments demonstrate the superiority of our learnable pooling approach compared to other pooling techniques for graph convolutional networks, with results improving the state-of-the-art in brain surface analysis.

The pumpkin pulp contains a greater composition of edible polysaccharides and has reported with excellent biological applications. This research pertains to optimize the extraction of polysaccharides from the fleshy portion of the pumpkin using aqueous assisted extraction (AAE). The result showed that the optimal extraction condition of pumpkin polysaccharide was as follows: extraction temperature at 55 °C, pH 4.5, and enzyme concentration of 4000 µ/g for 80 min. Under the optimal extraction condition, the yield of pumpkin polysaccharide via AAE (15.4) was significantly higher. The biological activities of extracted polysaccharide including α-amylase inhibition (57.41% at 1000 µg/mL) and anti-inflammatory (50.41% at 25 µg/mL) activity increased significantly. Additionally, the antioxidant activities of extracted pumpkin polysaccharides including IC 50 values of DPPH and ABTS were 59.87% and 58.74%, respectively. The pumpkin polysaccharide has maximum inhibitory effects against bacterial strains especially for Escherichia coli than that of fungal strains. In this study, the medium requirements to increase the production of xylitol by using Candida tropicalis (CT) have been investigated. The technique of single addition or omission of medium components was applied to determine the nutritional requirements. The addition of amino acids such as Asp, Glu, Gln, Asn, Thr, and Gly had no significant effect on CT growth. However, in the absence of other metal ions, there was a higher concentration of cell growth and xylitol production when only Zn 2+ was present in the medium. The analysis of various vitamins unveiled that biotin and thiamine were the only vitamins required for the growth of CT. Surprisingly, when only biotin was present in the medium as a vitamin, there was less growth of CT than when the medium was complete, but the amount of xylitol released was significantly higher. The novel SARS-CoV-2 uses ACE2 (Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme 2) receptor as an entry point. Insights on S protein receptor-binding domain (RBD) interaction with ACE2 receptor and drug repurposing has accelerated drug discovery for the novel SARS-CoV-2 infection. Finding small molecule binding sites in S protein and ACE2 interface is crucial in search of effective drugs to prevent viral entry. In this study, we employed molecular dynamics simulations in mixed solvents together with virtual screening to identify small molecules that could be potential inhibitors of S protein -ACE2 interaction. Observation of organic probe molecule localization during the simulations revealed multiple sites at the S protein surface related to small molecule, antibody, and ACE2 binding. In addition, a novel conformation of the S protein was discovered that could be stabilized by small molecules to inhibit attachment to ACE2. The most promising binding site on RBD-ACE2 interface was targeted with virtual screening and top-ranked compounds (DB08248, DB02651, DB03714, and DB14826) are suggested for experimental testing. The protocol described here offers an extremely fast method for characterizing key proteins of a novel pathogen and for the identification of compounds that could inhibit or accelerate spreading of the disease.

Algae is abundantly present in our ecosystems and can be easily extracted and used for production of biopolymers. Algae does not produce any anthropogenic, harmful effects, has a good growth rate, and cultivable in wastewater. This literature elucidates the potential of algae biomass by comparing various seaweed and microalgae strains. The routes for biopolymer production were portrayed and their novel methods of isolation such as microwave assisted, ultrasound assisted, and subcritical water assisted extraction are discussed in detail. These novel methods are observed to be highly efficient compared to conventional solvent extraction, with the microwave assisted and ultrasound assisted processes yielding 33% and 5% more biopolymer respectively than the conventional method. Biopolymers are used in variety of applications such as environmental remediation, adsorbent and antioxidant. The marked increase in bacterial colonization of medical devices and multiple drug resistance to traditional antibiotics underline the pressing need for developing novel antibacterial surface coatings. In the present investigation, natural polyphenol tannic acid (TA)-capped silver nanoparticles (TA-Ag NPs) were synthesized via an environmentally friendly and sustainable one-step redox reaction under UV irradiation with a simultaneous and uniform deposition on polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and other substrate surfaces. In the synthesis process, the dihydroxyphenyl and trihydroxyphenyl groups of TA actively participate in Ag + reduction, forming co-ordination linkages with Ag NPs and bestowing the deposition on the PDMS surface. The physico-chemical features of TA-Ag NPs were characterized in detail. Microscopic examination, surface elemental analysis, and wettability measurements clearly reveal the decoration of TA-Ag NPs on the substrate surfaces. The modified PDMS surfaces can kill the adhered bacteria or resist the bacterial adhesion, and no live bacteria can be found on their surfaces. Most importantly, the modified PDMS surfaces exhibit predominant antibacterial effects both in vitro in the catheter bridge model and in vivo in a rat subcutaneous infection model. On the other hand, the functionalized surfaces exhibit only a negligible level of cytotoxicity against L929 mouse fibroblasts with no side effects on the major organs of Sprague-Dawley rats after implantation, indicating their biocompatibility for potential biomedical applications.

The pandemic of COVID-19 across the globe triggered national lockdowns hampering normal working for all the essential services including healthcare. In order to reduce transmission and safety of patients and healthcare workers, the elective surgeries have been differed. The visits to the hospitals for follow-ups and consultations received temporary halt. However, we cannot halt the treatment for cancer patients who may or may not be COVID-19 positives. These are emergencies and should be treated ASAP. Conducting emergency surgeries during pandemic like COVID-19 is challenge for surgeons and the entire hospital infrastructure. The available information about COVID-19 and its propensity of contamination through droplets and aerosol need some modifications for conducting surgeries successfully without contaminating the hospital buildings, protecting healthcare teams and the patient. With these objectives, some modifications in the operating theater including surgical techniques for minimal access, laparoscopy, and robotic surgery are proposed in this review article. This review article also discusses the safety measures to be followed for the suspected or confirmed COVID-19 patient and the guidelines and recommendations for healthcare teams while treating these patients. Titanium (Ti) and its alloys are primarily explored to produce biomedical implants owing to their improved mechanical stability, corrosion resistance, low density, and good biocompatibility. Despite, Ti substrate surfaces are easily contaminated by plasma proteins and bacteria. Herein, a simple one-step process for the simultaneous deposition of a polyphenol tannic acid (TA) and four-armed poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG 10k -4-OH) on the Ti substrate (Ti-TA/PEG) surface was described. Additionally, a two-step process has been employed to fabricate the Ti-TA-PEG surface via successive deposition of TA and PEG 10k -4-OH for comparison. The resultant Ti-TA/PEG surface prepared by simultaneous deposition of TA and PEG 10k -4-OH exhibits higher coating thickness and better surface coverage than the Ti-TA-PEG surface. The Ti-TA/PEG and Ti-TA-PEG surfaces could actively inhibit the non-specific adsorption of proteins, suppress the bacterial and platelet adhesion, and prevents biofilm formation. Moreover, the Ti-TA/PEG surface displays a better antifouling performance than the Ti-TA-PEG surface. Central nervous system (CNS) sequelae continue to be common in HIV-infected individuals despite combination antiretroviral therapy (cART). These sequelae include HIV-associated neurocognitive disorder (HAND) and virologic persistence in the CNS. Resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rsfMRI) is a widely used tool to examine the integrity of brain function and pathology. In this study, we examined 16 HIV-positive (HIV+) subjects and 12 age, sex, and race matched HIV seronegative controls (HIV-) whole-brain high-resolution rsfMRI along with a battery of neurocognitive tests. A comprehensive data-driven analysis of rsfMRI revealed impaired functional connectivity, with very large effect sizes in executive function, language, and multisensory processing networks in HIV+ subjects. These results indicate the potential of high-resolution rsfMRI in combination with advanced data analysis techniques to yield biomarkers of neural impairment in HIV.

A simple method has been needed to synthesize nanoparticles (NPs) to avoid environmental pollution, an alternative chemical and physical method. This current study deals with phytosynthesis of gold (Au) and platinum (Pt) metal doped with titanium oxide (TiO 2 ) NPs using Enterolobium saman bark extract. This extract plays a vital role in reducing and stabilizing Au and Pt doped into the TiO 2 NPs lattices. Phytosynthesized samples were characterized by XRD, SEM, ED-XRF, TEM, FTIR, Raman, and UV-vis-DRS analyses. The metal doping effect has decreased bandgap energy and particle size, whereas increased conductivity for TiO 2 /M-Au and TiO 2 /M-Pt NPs compared to pristine TiO 2 NPs. Phytosynthesized NPs were fabricated for dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) and photocatalytic behaviour against methylene blue (MB) dye was studied. An obtained result demonstrates that TiO 2 /M-Au NPs have excellent feasibility for applying DSSC and photocatalytic application due to particle size, crystallite size, absorption ability, and bandgap energy. Besides, synthesized samples were measured with cyclic voltammetry and impedance spectroscopy found that the metal doping is drifted the dielectric and increases that the metal doping is drifted the dielectric increases electro-catalytic of the TiO 2 . Different concentrations of all NPs were tested against Escherichia coli MTCC 40 and S. aureus ATCC 6633 bacteria by a well-diffusion method. The 10 mg concentration of all NPs showed better antibacterial activity. Thermostable enzymes are a field of growing interest in bioremediation, pharmaceuticals, food industry etc., due to their ability to catalyze bio reactions at high temperatures. This review aims to provide an overview on extremophiles with a special focus on thermophiles and enzymes produced from extremophilic bacteria. Novel thermostable catalysts, used in producing commercially important chemicals, are discussed in this review. Various classes of enzymes produced by microbes, synthesis of thermozymes and comparison with enzymes produced at optimal conditions are critically discussed. A detailed discussion on immobilized enzymes in comparisons with free enzymes, produced by extremozymes, is included. Different parameters which affect enzyme production are also discussed. The present work aims to synthesize zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles via green approaches using leaf extract of Parthenium hysterophorus . UV-vis and FT-IR tests confirmed the existence of biomolecules, active materials, and metal oxides. The X-ray diffraction structural study exposes the ZnO nanoparticles formation with hexagonal phase structures. SEM and TEM analysis reveal surface morphologies of ZnO nanoparticles and most of them are spherical with a size range of 10 nm. ZnO nanoparticles were revealed strong antimicrobial activity against both bacterial and fungal strains. Quantifying accurate functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) activation maps can be dampened by spatio-temporally varying task-correlated motion (TCM) artifacts in certain task paradigms (e.g., overt speech). Such real-world tasks are relevant to characterize longitudinal brain reorganization poststroke, and removal of TCM artifacts is vital for improved clinical interpretation and translation. In this study, we developed a novel independent component analysis (ICA)-based approach to denoise spatio-temporally varying TCM artifacts in 14 persons with aphasia who participated in an overt language fMRI paradigm. We compared the new methodology with other existing approaches such as "standard" volume registration, nonselective motion correction ICA packages (i.e., AROMA), and combining the novel approach with AROMA. Results show that the proposed methodology outperforms other approaches in removing TCM-related false positive activity (i.e., improved detectability power) with high spatial specificity. The proposed method was also effective in maintaining a balance between removal of TCM-related trial-by-trial variability and signal retention. Finally, we show that the TCM artifact is related to clinical metrics, such as speech fluency and aphasia severity, and the implication of TCM denoising on such relationship is also discussed. Overall, our work suggests that routine bulkhead motion based denoising packages cannot effectively account for spatio-temporally varying TCM. In this research, raw jujube seeds (RJS) treated with sulphuric acid followed by ultrasonic treatment such as ultrasonic assisted jujube seeds (UAJS) based biochar have been experimented as a viable material for treating Zn(II) and Pb(II) contaminated water. The adsorption ability of UAJS was compared with RJS through Langmuir adsorption capacity. The produced adsorbents were analysed by using BET surface area and thermogravimetric analyses. The removal kinetics, isotherms and thermodynamic behaviours of metal ions adsorption by UAJS were studied. Adsorption equilibrium data were analysed using various equilibrium models and Freundlich isotherm was appropriate towards explain the adsorption characteristics. UAJS Langmuir capacity of 221.1 mg/g and 119.8 mg/g were obtained for Zn(II) ions and Pb(II) ions, respectively. The results observed that UAJS holds higher capacity as compared with RJS. The pseudo-first order model was relevant to address adsorption behaviour. The mechanism on the separation of metal ions by UAJS was tested using diffusion and Boyd models. The mechanism outcomes observed that the internal and external diffusion controlled the separation process. The thermodynamic results explain the separation process was viable, exothermic and natural. The electroplating industrial wastewater was also treated with UAJS biochar to remove the metal ions such as copper, nickel, chromium and zinc ions from wastewater. Desorption process showed that 0.1 N HCl provide the good results as compared with other desorbing agents. The adsorbent property is not lost till the maximum of 5 adsorption/desorption cycles. With the advent of microvascular surgery, the choice of reconstruction following resection of the primary has an important bearing on the final functional and cosmetic outcome in surgical oncology. The vertical rectus abdominis myocutaneous (VRAM) flap is arguably the most widely used and versatile flap in reconstructive surgery. All patients undergoing a VRAM flap reconstruction following resection of their tumor in the Surgical Oncology Department of a tertiary cancer center from 2012 to 2019 were included in the study. Defects ranged from the breast (40), head and neck (10), groin (3), and perineum (5). The primary outcome measure was incidence of complete and partial flap necrosis, while incidence of hematoma, seroma, incisional hernia, wound dehiscence, and infection were secondary outcomes measured. The patients were followed up for a minimum period of 1 year. The incidence of complete flap necrosis was 5.1% (3) and partial loss 12% (7). Incidence of minor complications such as seroma was 13.7% (8), hematoma 6.8% (4), wound dehiscence 10.3% (6), and wound infection 5.1% (3). Incisional hernia and donor site wound-related complications were not seen in any. On binary regression analysis, the presence of diabetes mellitus, smoking, and the use of adjuvant treatment were associated significantly with increased odds of flap loss. This study demonstrates the versatility and reliability of the VRAM flap in primary reconstruction of defects in surgical oncology. The COVID-19 pandemic, caused by novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), is a severe global health crisis now. SARS-CoV-2 utilizes its Spike protein receptor-binding domain (S-protein) to invade human cell through binding to Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme 2 receptor (ACE2). S-protein is the key target for many therapeutics and vaccines. Potential S-protein-ACE2 fusion inhibitor is expected to block the virus entry into the host cell. In many countries, traditional practices, based on natural products (NPs) have been in use to slow down COVID-19 infection. In this study, a protocol was applied that combines mixed solvent molecular dynamics simulations (MixMD) with high-throughput virtual screening (HTVS) to search NPs to block SARS-CoV-2 entry into the human cell. MixMD simulations were employed to discover the most promising stable binding conformations of drug-like probes in the S-protein-ACE2 interface. Detected stable sites were used for HTVs of 612093 NPs to identify molecules that could interfere with the S-protein-ACE2 interaction. In total, 19 NPs were selected with rescoring model. These top-ranked NP-S-protein complexes were subjected to classical MD simulations for 300 ns (3 replicates of 100 ns) to estimate the stability and affinity of binding. Three compounds, ZINC000002128789, ZINC000002159944 and SN00059335, showed better stability in all MD runs, of which ZINC000002128789 was predicted to have the highest binding affinity, suggesting that it could be effective modulator in RBD-ACE2 interface to prevent SARS-CoV-2 infection. A hybrid and straightforward nanosystem that can be used simultaneously for cancer-targeted fluorescence imaging and targeted drug delivery in vitro was reported in this study. A chitosan (CS) polymer coated with reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and implanted with Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles was fabricated. The fundamental physicochemical properties were confirmed via FT-IR, XRD, FE-SEM, HR-TEM, XPS, and VSM analysis. The in vivo toxicity study in zebrafish showed that the nanocomposite was not toxic. The in vitro drug loading amount was 0.448 mg/mL -1 for doxorubicin, an anticancer therapeutic, in the rGO/Fe 3 O 4 /CS nanocomposite. Furthermore, the pH-regulated release was observed using folic acid. Cellular uptake and multimodal imaging revealed the benefit of the folic acid-conjugated nanocomposite as a drug carrier, which remarkably improves the doxorubicin accumulation inside the cancer cells over-express folate receptors. The rGO/Fe 3 O 4 /CS nanocomposite showed enhanced antibiofilm and antioxidant properties compared to other materials. This study's outcomes support the use of the nanocomposite in targeted chemotherapy and the potential applications in the polymer, cosmetic, biomedical, and food industries.

Inevitable use of plastic materials in our day-to-day life has led to the entry of microplastic into aquatic environments, which are plastics less that than 5 mm. Microplastic is of great concern in recent years due to its impact on humans and aquatic organisms since they absorb organic contaminants and pathogens from the surrounding media due to higher surface and volume ratio. This is the first study attempted to study the distribution and source of microplastic contamination in Red Hills Lake which is one of the freshwater systems supplying water to the North of Chennai city. Thirty-two sediment samples and six water samples were collected covering an area 18.21 km 2 . The presence of microplastic was analyzed in water and sediment as per the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) protocol. The mean concentration of microplastic in water samples was 5.9 particles/L and 27 particles/kg in sediment. In both sediments and water, the most commonly found microplastic types are as follows: fibers (37.9%), fragments (27%), films (24%), and pellets (11.1%). Based on the FTIR, the common types of microplastic were of high-density polyethylene, low-density polyethylene, polypropylene, and polystyrene. Further samples were evaluated for surface elemental composition in order to understand whether heavy metals get adhered to the surface of microplastic using energy-dispersive X-ray. Our results indicated the presence of microplastic in water and sediments which will lead to further study of microplastic presence in biota and microplastic pollution in freshwater systems.

Background: The clinical and epidemiological significance of HIV-associated Mycobacterium tuberculosis bloodstream infection (BSI) is incompletely understood. We hypothesised that M tuberculosis BSI prevalence has been underestimated, that it independently predicts death, and that sputum Xpert MTB/RIF has suboptimal diagnostic yield for M tuberculosis BSI., Methods: We did a systematic review and individual patient data (IPD) meta-analysis of studies performing routine mycobacterial blood culture in a prospectively defined patient population of people with HIV aged 13 years or older. Studies were identified through searching PubMed and Scopus up to Nov 10, 2018, without language or date restrictions and through manual review of reference lists. Risk of bias in the included studies was assessed with an adapted QUADAS-2 framework. IPD were requested for all identified studies and subject to harmonised inclusion criteria: age 13 years or older, HIV positivity, available CD4 cell count, a valid mycobacterial blood culture result (excluding patients with missing data from lost or contaminated blood cultures), and meeting WHO definitions for suspected tuberculosis (presence of screening symptom). Predicted probabilities of M tuberculosis BSI from mixed-effects modelling were used to estimate prevalence. Estimates of diagnostic yield of sputum testing with Xpert (or culture if Xpert was unavailable) and of urine lipoarabinomannan (LAM) testing for M tuberculosis BSI were obtained by two-level random-effect meta-analysis. Estimates of mortality associated with M tuberculosis BSI were obtained by mixed-effect Cox proportional-hazard modelling and of effect of treatment delay on mortality by propensity-score analysis. This study is registered with PROSPERO, number 42016050022., Findings: We identified 23 datasets for inclusion (20 published and three unpublished at time of search) and obtained IPD from 20, representing 96·2% of eligible IPD. Risk of bias for the included studies was assessed to be generally low except for on the patient selection domain, which was moderate in most studies. 5751 patients met harmonised IPD-level inclusion criteria. Technical factors such as number of blood cultures done, timing of blood cultures relative to blood sampling, and patient factors such as inpatient setting and CD4 cell count, explained significant heterogeneity between primary studies. The predicted probability of M tuberculosis BSI in hospital inpatients with HIV-associated tuberculosis, WHO danger signs, and a CD4 count of 76 cells per μL (the median for the cohort) was 45% (95% CI 38-52). The diagnostic yield of sputum in patients with M tuberculosis BSI was 77% (95% CI 63-87), increasing to 89% (80-94) when combined with urine LAM testing. Presence of M tuberculosis BSI compared with its absence in patients with HIV-associated tuberculosis increased risk of death before 30 days (adjusted hazard ratio 2·48, 95% CI 2·05-3·08) but not after 30 days (1·25, 0·84-2·49). In a propensity-score matched cohort of participants with HIV-associated tuberculosis (n=630), mortality increased in patients with M tuberculosis BSI who had a delay in anti-tuberculosis treatment of longer than 4 days compared with those who had no delay (odds ratio 3·15, 95% CI 1·16-8·84)., Interpretation: In critically ill adults with HIV-tuberculosis, M tuberculosis BSI is a frequent manifestation of tuberculosis and predicts mortality within 30 days. Blood Oxygen Level Dependent (BOLD) functional MRI is a complex neurovascular signal whose magnitude depends on baseline physiological factors such as cerebral blood flow (CBF). Because baseline CBF varies across the brain and is altered with aging, the interpretation of stand-alone aging-related BOLD changes can be misleading. The primary objective of this study was to develop a methodology that combines task fMRI and arterial spin labeling (ASL) techniques to sensitize task-induced BOLD activity by covarying out the baseline physiology (i.e., CBF) in an aging model. We recruited 11 younger and 13 older healthy participants who underwent ASL and an overt language fMRI task (semantic category member generation). We measured in-scanner language performance to investigate the effect of BOLD sensitization on BOLD-behavior relationships. The results demonstrate that our correction approach is effective at enhancing the specificity and sensitivity of the BOLD signal in both groups. In addition, the correction strengthens the statistical association between task BOLD activity and behavioral performance. Although CBF has inherent age dependence, our results show that retaining the age factor within CBF aides in greater sensitization of task fMRI signals. From a cognitive standpoint, compared to young adults, the older participants showed a delayed domain-general language-related task activity possibly due to compromised vessel compliance. Further, assessment of functional evolution of corrected BOLD activity revealed biphasic BOLD dynamics in both groups where BOLD deactivation may reflect greater semantic demand or increased premium on domain general executive functioning in response to task difficulty. Although it was promising to note that the predictability of behavior using the proposed methodology outperforms other methodologies (i.e., no correction and normalization by division), and provides moderate stability and adequate power, further work with a larger cohort and other task designs is necessary to improve the stability of predicting associated behavior. In summary, we recommend correction of task fMRI signals by covarying out baseline CBF especially when comparing groups with different neurovascular properties. Background: Hypertension is a prevalent cardiovascular complication caused by genetic and nongenetic factors. Blood pressure (BP) management is difficult because most patients become resistant to monotherapy soon after treatment initiation. Although many antihypertensive drugs are available, some patients do not respond to multiple drugs. Identification of personalized antihypertensive treatments is a key for better BP management., Objective: This review aimed to elucidate aspects of rational drug design and other methods to develop better hypertension management., Results: Among hypertension-related signaling mechanisms, the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system is the leading genetic target for hypertension treatment. Identifying a single drug that acts on multiple targets is an emerging strategy for hypertension treatment, and could be achieved by discovering new drug targets with less mutated and highly conserved regions. Extending pharmacogenomics research to include patients with hypertension receiving multiple antihypertensive drugs could help identify the genetic markers of hypertension. However, available evidence on the role of pharmacogenomics in hypertension is limited and primarily focused on candidate genes. Studies on hypertension pharmacogenomics aim to identify the genetic causes of response variations to antihypertensive drugs. Genetic association studies have identified single nucleotide polymorphisms affecting drug responses. To understand how genetic traits alter drug responses, computational screening of mutagenesis can be utilized to observe drug response variations at the protein level, which can help identify new inhibitors and drug targets to manage hypertension., Conclusion: Rational drug design facilitates the discovery and design of potent inhibitors.
