This paper presents an investigation into the influence of repeating cycles of hydrothermal growth processes and rapid thermal annealing (HT+RTA) on the properties of CuO thin films. An innovative hydrothermal method ensures homogeneous single-phase films initially. However, their electrical instability and susceptibility to cracking under the influence of temperature have posed a challenge to their utilization in electronic devices. To address this limitation, the HT+RTA procedure has been developed, which effectively eliminated the issue. Comprehensive surface analysis confirmed the procedure's ability to yield continuous films in which the content of organic compounds responsible for the formation of cracks significantly decreases. Structural analysis underscored the achieved improvements in the crystalline quality of the films. The implementation of the HT+RTA procedure significantly enhances the potential of CuO films for electronic applications. Key findings from Kelvin probe force microscopy analysis demonstrate the possibility of modulating the work function of the material. In addition, scanning capacitance microscopy measurements provided information on the changes in the local carrier concentration with each repetition. These studies indicate the increased usefulness of CuO thin films obtained from the HT+RTA procedure, which expands the possibilities of their applications in electronic devices., (Copyright © 2024, Ozga et al.)

Atomic layer deposition of HfO 2 from TDMAH and water or ammonia water at different temperatures below 400 °C is studied. Growth per cycle (GPC) has been recorded in the range of 1.2-1.6 Å. At low temperatures (≤100 °C), the films grew faster and are structurally more disordered, amorphous and/or polycrystalline with crystal sizes up to 29 nm, compared to the films grown at higher temperatures. At high temperatures of 240 °C, the films are better crystallized with crystal sizes of 38-40 nm but grew slower. GPC, dielectric constant, and crystalline structure are improved by depositing at temperatures above 300 °C. The dielectric constant value and the roughness of the films have been determined for monoclinic HfO 2 , a mixture of orthorhombic and monoclinic, as well as for amorphous HfO 2 . Moreover, the present study shows that the increase in the dielectric constant of the films can be achieved by using ammonia water as an oxygen precursor in the ALD growth. The detailed investigations of the relationship between HfO 2 properties and growth parameters presented here have not been reported so far, and the possibilities of fine-tuning and controlling the structure and performance of these layers are still being sought.

This work demonstrated the optimization of HiPIMS reactive magnetron sputtering of hafnium oxynitride (HfO x N y ) thin films. During the optimization procedure, employing Taguchi orthogonal tables, the parameters of examined dielectric films were explored, utilizing optical methods (spectroscopic ellipsometry and refractometry), electrical characterization (C-V, I-V measurements of MOS structures), and structural investigation (AFM, XRD, XPS). The thermal stability of fabricated HfO x N y layers, up to 800 °C, was also investigated. The presented results demonstrated the correctness of the optimization methodology. The results also demonstrated the significant stability of hafnia-based layers at up to 800 °C. No electrical parameters or surface morphology deteriorations were demonstrated. The structural analysis revealed comparable electrical properties and significantly greater immunity to high-temperature treatment in HfO x N y layers formed using HiPIMS, as compared to those formed using the standard pulsed magnetron sputtering technique. The results presented in this study confirmed that the investigated hafnium oxynitride films, fabricated through the HiPIMS process, could potentially be used as a thermally-stable gate dielectric in self-aligned MOS structures and devices.

The continuous development of ALD thin films demands ongoing improvements and changes toward fabricating materials with tailored properties that are suitable for different practical applications. Ozone has been recently established as a precursor, with distinct advantages over the alternative oxidizing precursors in the ALDs of advanced dielectric films. This study reports alumina (Al 2 O 3 ) and hafnia (HfO 2 ) formation using an O 3 source and compares the obtained structural and electrical properties. The performed structural examinations of ozone-based materials proved homogenous high- k films with less vacancy levels compared to water-based films. The enhanced structural properties also result in the problematic incorporation of different dopants through the bulk layer. Furthermore, analysis of electrical characteristics of the MIS structures with ALD gate dielectrics demonstrated the improved quality and good insulating properties of ozone-based films. However, further optimization of the ALD technique with ozone is needed as a relatively low relative permittivity characterizes the ultra-thin films.

Iron plays an important role in various crucial processes in the body and its deficiency is considered currently as a serious health problem. Thus, iron supplementation strategies for both humans and animals need to be effective and safe. According to our previous studies, zinc-based nanoparticles provide safe, biodegradable, fast and efficient transport system of orally given substances to the tissues. In the current manuscript we present results of a study aimed at investigation of the ZnO nanoparticle-based Fe supplementation system (average size 100 × 250 nm). Nanostructures were orally (gavage) administered to adult mice. Animals were sacrificed at different time points with collection of blood and internal organs for analyses (tissue iron concentration, hepatic level of hepcidin, blood parameters, liver and spleen levels of ferritin, histopathology). Initial experiment was performed to compare the biological effect of doping type (Fe 3+ doping vs. a mixture of Fe 3+ and Fe 2+ ). Then, the effect of acute/chronic exposure models was determined. The increase in ferritin, along with improved, crucial hematological parameters and lack of the influence on hepcidin expression indicated the chronic application of Fe 3+,2+ doped ZnO nanostructures to be the most effective among tested.

Purpose of Review: A successful reverse total shoulder arthroplasty requires careful preoperative planning and perioperative management. Preoperative comorbidity risks, perioperative pain management, and postoperative rehabilitation are all critical components of this arthroplasty. The current review examines available literature to guide the perioperative care of the reverse total shoulder arthroplasty patient., Recent Findings: One of the most important advances for shoulder arthroplasty in recent years has been heightened awareness of various modalities for perioperative pain management. A number of recent studies have focused on the options for regional blockade as a critical tool for postoperative pain relief and the use of either continuous interscalene blocks or single shot blocks are supported. Additional studies are necessary to define the best local anesthetic agent and delivery mechanism to provide appropriate pain relief with a low side effect profile. Management of the patient throughout the perioperative course is a critical component in achieving better patient outcomes delivering high quality patient care. An orthopedic surgery team focused on perioperative management is better positioned to decrease adverse events and improve patient outcomes after reverse total shoulder arthroplasty., (© 2021. Today, silicon solar cells (amorphous films and wafer-based) are a main source of green energy. These cells and their components are produced by employing various technologies. Unfortunately, during the production process, chemicals that are harmful for the environment and for human life are used. For example, hydrofluoric acid is used to texture the top electrode to improve light harvesting. In this work, and also in recent ones, we report a way to obtain 3D textures on the top electrode by using zinc oxide nanorods. The efficiency of a textured solar cell structure is compared with the one obtained for a planar zinc oxide/silicon structure. The present results show the possibility to produce efficient solar cells on a relatively thin 50 μm thick silicon substrate. Solar cells with structured top electrodes were examined by numerous measuring techniques. Scanning electron microscopy revealed a grain-like morphology of the magnesium-doped zinc oxide film. The size of the grains is closely related to the structure of the nanorods. The external quantum efficiency of the cells was measured. The obtained solar cell shows response in a wide spectral range from ultraviolet to infrared. Current-voltage and current-voltage-temperature measurements were performed to evaluate basic photovoltaic parameters. At room temperature, the cells efficiency equals to 9.1% for textured structures and 5.4% for planar structures, respectively. In order to effectively utilize the photovoltaic properties of gallium arsenide, its surface/interface needs to be properly prepared. In the experiments described here we examined eight different paths of GaAs surface treatment (cleaning, etching, passivation) which resulted in different external quantum efficiency (EQE) values of the tested photovoltaic (PV) cells. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) examinations were conducted to obtain structural details of the devices. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) with depth profiling was used to examine interface structure and changes in the elemental content and chemical bonds. The photoluminescence (PL) properties and bandgap measurements of the deposited layers were also reported. The highest EQE value was obtained for the samples initially etched with a citric acid-based etchant and, in the last preparation step, either passivated with ammonium sulfide aqueous solution or treated with ammonium hydroxide solution with no final passivation. Subsequent I - V measurements, however, confirmed that from these samples, only the sulfur-passivated ones provided the highest current density. Atomic layer deposition (ALD) technology has started to attract attention as an efficient method for obtaining bioactive, ultrathin oxide coatings. In this study, using ALD, we have created titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) layers. The coatings were characterised in terms of physicochemical and biological properties. The chemical composition of coatings, as well as thickness, roughness, wettability, was determined using XPS, XRD, XRR. Cytocompatibillity of ALD TiO 2 coatings was accessed applying model of mouse pre-osteoblast cell line MC3T3-E1. The accumulation of transcripts essential for bone metabolism (both mRNA and miRNA) was determined using RT-qPCR. Obtained ALD TiO 2 coatings were characterised as amorphous and homogeneous. Cytocompatibility of the layers was expressed by proper morphology and growth pattern of the osteoblasts, as well as their increased viability, proliferative and metabolic activity. Simultaneously, we observed decreased activity of osteoclasts. Obtained coatings promoted expression of Opn, Coll-1, miR-17 and miR-21 in MC3T3-E1 cells. The results are promising in terms of the potential application of TiO 2 coatings obtained by ALD in the field of orthopaedics, especially in terms of metabolic- and age-related bone diseases, including osteoporosis.

Background: Due to increasing aging of population prevalence of age-related disorders including osteoporosis is rapidly growing. Due to health and economic impact of the disease, there is an urgent need to develop techniques supporting bone metabolism and bone regeneration after fracture. Due to imbalance between bone forming and bone resorbing cells, the healing process of osteoporotic bone is problematic and prolonged. Thus searching for agents able to restore the homeostasis between these cells is strongly desirable., Results: In the present study, using ALD technology, we obtained homogeneous, amorphous layer of hafnium (IV) oxide (HfO 2 ). Considering the specific growth rate (1.9Å/cycle) for the selected process at the temperature of 90 °C, we performed the 100 nm deposition process, which was confirmed by measuring film thickness using reflectometry. Then biological properties of the layer were investigated with pre-osteoblast (MC3T3), pre-osteoclasts (4B12) and macrophages (RAW 264.7) using immunofluorescence and RT-qPCR. We have shown, that HfO 2 (i) enhance osteogenesis, (ii) reduce osteoclastogenesis (iii) do not elicit immune response and (iv) exert anti-inflammatory effects., Conclusion: HfO 2 layer can be applied to cover the surface of metallic biomaterials in order to enhance the healing process of osteoporotic bone fracture.

Introduction: The development of the field of biomaterials engineering is rapid. Various bioactive coatings are created to improve the biocompatibility of substrates used for bone regeneration, which includes formulation of thin zirconia coatings with pro-osteogenic properties. The aim of this study was to assess the biological properties of ZrO 2 thin films grown by Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) technology (ZrO 2 ALD )., Methodology: The cytocompatibility of the obtained layers was analysed using the mice pre-osteoblastic cell line (MC3T3) characterized by decreased expression of microRNA 21-5p (miR-21-5p) in order to evaluate the potential pro-osteogenic properties of the coatings. The in vitro experiments were designed to determine the effect of ZrO 2 ALD coatings on cell morphology (confocal microscope), proliferative activity (cell cycle analysis) and metabolism, reflected by mitochondrial membrane potential (cytometric-based measurement). Additionally, the influence of layers on the expression of genes associated with cell survival and osteogenesis was studied using RT-qPCR. The following genes were investigated: B-cell lymphoma 2 ( Bcl-2 ), Bcl-2-associated X protein ( Bax ), p53 and p21 , as well as osteogenic markers, i.e. collagen type 1 ( Coll-1 ), osteopontin ( Opn ), osteocalcin ( Ocl ) and runt-related transcription factor 2 ( Runx-2 ). The levels of microRNA (miRNA/miR) involved in the regulation of osteogenic genes were determined, including miR-7, miR-21, miR-124 and miR-223., Results: The analysis revealed that the obtained coatings are cytocompatible and may increase the metabolism of pre-osteoblast, which was correlated with increased mitochondrial membrane potential and extensive development of the mitochondrial network. The obtained coatings affected the viability and proliferative status of cells, reducing the population of actively dividing cells. However, in cultures propagated on ZrO 2 ALD coatings, the up-regulation of genes essential for bone metabolism was noted., Discussion: The data obtained indicate that ZrO 2 coatings created using the ALD method may have pro-osteogenic properties and may improve the metabolism of bone precursor cells. Iron is the crucial element for living organisms and its deficiency is described as the most common nutritional disorder all over the world. Nowadays, more effective and safe iron supplementation strategies for both humans and animals become one of the most important challenges in the therapy of nutritional deficiencies. Our previous in vivo studies confirmed safety and biodegradability of in-house manufactured zinc oxide-based nanoparticles and their rapid distribution to majority of organs and tissues in the body. In vitro examinations performed on Caco-2 cell line, a model of epithelial cells of the gastrointestinal tract, revealed a low toxicity of studied nanomaterials. In the current study, we investigated biodegradable zinc oxide nanoparticles doped with Fe(III) as a perspective supplementation strategy for iron deficiency. Biodegradable ZnO:Fe nanoparticles were intra-gastrically administered to adult mice and following 24 h, animals were sacrificed with collection of internal organs for further analyses. The iron concentration measured with atomic absorption spectrometry and histological staining (Perl's method) showed a rapid distribution of iron-doped nanoparticles to tissues specifically related with iron homeostasis. Accumulation of iron was also visible within hepatocytes and around blood vessels within the spleen, which might indicate the transfer of Fe-doped nanoparticles from the bloodstream into the tissue. Reassuming, preliminary results obtained in the current study suggest that biodegradable ZnO nanoparticles doped with Fe might be a good carriers of exogenous iron in the living body. Therefore, subsequent investigations focus on determination an exact mechanisms related with an iron deposition in the tissue and influence of nanoparticle carriers on iron metabolism are required.

Zinc-based nanoparticles are promising materials for various applications, including in biomedicine. The aim of our study was to determine the effect of fluorescent europium-doped zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO:Eu NPs) on sperm parameters, cell apoptosis and integrity of the blood-testis barrier (BTB) in mice. Nanostructures were orally administered to adult mice (n = 34). Animals were sacrificed after 3 h, 24 h, 7 d and 14 d following oral administration. Sperm was collected and analysed for viability and kinetic parameters. Collected testes were quantitatively analysed for accumulation of ZnO:Eu NPs. Microscopic evaluation based on immunofluorescence and histopathological studies were also conducted. Results showed that ZnO:Eu NPs were able to overcome the BTB with their subsequent accumulation in the testis. No toxic or pro-apoptotic effects of nanoparticles on the male reproductive system were observed. The results suggested that ZnO:Eu NPs were able to accumulate in the testis with no negative impact on sperm parameters, tissue architecture or the integrity of the BTB.

While synthesis methods for pure ZnO nanostructures are well established, an efficient technique for the growth of ZnO-based nanowires or microrods that incorporate any type of quantum structure is yet to be established. Here, we report on the fabrication and optical properties of axial Zn1-xMgxO/ZnO/Zn1-xMgxO quantum wells that were deposited by molecular beam epitaxy on ZnO microrods obtained using a hydrothermal method. Using the emission energy results found in cathodoluminescence measurements and the results of a numerical modeling process, we found the quantum well width to be 4 nm, as intended, at the growth stage. The emission of quantum well-confined excitons persists up to room temperature. We used the fabricated structures to determine the carrier diffusion length (>280 nm) in ZnO using spatially resolved cathodoluminescence. The micro-photoluminescence results suggest an increase in the electron-phonon coupling strength with increasing microrod size.

In this work, well-aligned vertical ZnO nanorod (ZnO NRs) on p-type Si substrate was fabricated by a microwave-assisted hydrothermal reactor to study the coal mine methane (CMM) gas sensing properties. The XRD diffraction peaks and Raman spectra of the ZnO NRs confirmed the hexagonal wurtzite structure with strong preferential orientation along the c axis and well crystal quality. SEM analysis showed NRs with 100 nm average diameter and ~600 nm length. The variations of the sensor electrical resistance in the presence of CMM were investigated at different gas concentrations and various temperatures in the dark and under UV light. The selectivity and response time of the sensor to CMM gas were improved under UV irradiation. The optimal operating temperatures were 225 °C and 100 °C in dark and exposing UV-irradiation, respectively. Also the response of ZnO NRs sensor under UV excitation in humid condition was higher. The sensor was more selective to CMM than CO 2 . The sensor stability was considered by repeating CMM detection for 90 days.

The use of complementary visualization and measurement techniques allowed accurate description and quantification of changes in the intestinal mucosal architecture and provided a comprehensive outlook on the dynamics of remodelling and maturation processes of the mucosal layer taking place in the small intestine of piglets from birth to weaning. The aim of the study was to examine the early postnatal development of the small intestine in pigs. Three techniques were used: scanning electron microscopy (measurements of villus density and shape, height of enterocytes and microvilli, cell exfoliation, and location of extrusion zones), optical microscopy (cross section, measurement of structures: villus length and width; crypt depth; mucosal thickness), and confocal microscopy (cell localization, apoptosis, exfoliation and migration). The postnatal development of the mucosal layer of the small intestine was reflected in changes in the density, length, width, and shape of villi, crypt depth, replacement of enterocyte population, and arrangement. The presence of deep transverse furrows on villus corpus and vacuolated fetal-type enterocytes in the mucosal layer of the small intestine, which are able to engulf large amounts of colostrum shortly after birth, appears to play an important role in the observed phenomenon of straightening of the villus height and increasing of the villus diameter shortly after birth. We hypothesized that the intestinal mucosal layer is compressed before birth and ready to unfold within a short time after birth.

This work discusses an application of titanium oxide (TiO x ) thin films deposited using physical (reactive magnetron sputtering, RMS) and chemical (atomic layer deposition, ALD) vapour deposition methods as a functional coating for label-free optical biosensors. The films were applied as a coating for two types of sensors based on the localised surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of gold nanoparticles deposited on a glass plate and on a long-period grating (LPG) induced in an optical fibre. Optical and structural properties of the TiO x thin films were investigated and discussed. It has been found that deposition method has a significant influence on optical properties and composition of the films, but negligible impact on TiO x surface silanization effectiveness. A higher content of oxygen with lower Ti content in the ALD films leads to the formation of layers with higher refractive index and slightly higher extinction coefficient than for the RMS TiO x . Moreover, application of the TiO x film independently on deposition method enables not only for tuning of the spectral response of the investigated biosensors, but also in case of LSPR for enhancing the ability for biofunctionalization, i.e., TiO x film mechanically protects the nanoparticles and induces change in the biofunctionalization procedure to the one typical for oxides. TiO x coated LSPR and LPG sensors with refractive index sensitivity of close to 30 and 3400nm/RIU, respectively, were investigated. The ability for molecular recognition was evaluated with the well-known complex formation between avidin and biotin as a model system. The shift in resonance wavelength reached 3 and 13.2nm in case of LSPR and LPG sensors, respectively. The aim of the study was to determine the effect of butyrate infusion into the rumen on butyrate flow to the duodenum, expression of short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) transporters (monocarboxylate transporter-1, -2, and -4) and receptors (G protein coupled receptor-41 and -43) in the duodenal epithelium and nutrient digestion in sheep. Eight wethers (39.0 ± 3.00 kg; mean ± SD) with ruminal and T-shape duodenal cannulas were allocated to 4 × 4 replicated Latin square design with each experimental period lasting for 21 d (12 d of adaptation and 9 d for data and sample collection). Experimental treatments were: 1) distilled water infusion into the rumen (CONT); 2) 15 g/d of butyric acid infusion into the rumen (BUT15); 3) 30 g/d of butyric acid infusion into the rumen (BUT30); and 4) 45 g/d of butyric acid infusion into the rumen (BUT45). The daily dose of butyrate was infused into the rumen via the rumen cannula, with 200 mL of solution of butyric acid and distilled water, at a constant rate (0.1389 mL/min) throughout the day using a peristaltic pump. Correspondingly, 200 mL/d of distilled water was infused into the rumen of CONT. The wethers were fed daily 900 g of chopped meadow hay and 200 g of concentrate in two equal meals at 0600 and 1800 h. Butyrate infusion into the rumen did not affect total SCFA concentration in the rumen fluid ( > 0.11). Molar proportion of butyrate in total SCFA linearly increased, and molar proportion of acetate and isovalerate linearly decreased ( ≤ 0.02) with an increasing amount of butyrate infused into the rumen. The molar proportion of butyrate in total SCFA in the duodenal digesta linearly increased ( < 0.01), and butyrate flow to duodenum tended to linearly increase ( = 0.06) with an increasing dose of exogenous butyrate delivered to the rumen. Butyrate infusion into the rumen did not affect ( ≥ 0.14) the mRNA expression of monocarboxylate transporter-2 and -4 and G protein coupled receptor-43 in the duodenal epithelium. The G protein coupled receptor-41 and monocarboxylate transporter-1 mRNA expression in the duodenal epithelium was very low in many of the analyzed samples. Digestibility of organic matter, neutral detergent fiber, and acid detergent fiber in the stomach (forestomach and abomasum) decreased for BUT15 and BUT30 and then increased for BUT45 (quadratic, ≤ 0.04); however, neither digestibility in the intestine nor total tract digestibility differed between treatments ( ≥ 0.10).

Biodegradable zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) are considered promising materials for future biomedical applications. To fulfil this potential, biodistribution and elimination patterns of ZnO NPs in the living organism need to be resolved. In order to investigate gastrointestinal absorption of ZnO NPs and their intra-organism distribution, water suspension of ZnO or fluorescent ZnO:Eu (Europium-doped zinc oxide) NPs (10mg/ml; 0.3ml/mouse) was alimentary-administered (IG: intra-gastric) to adult mice. Internal organs collected at key time-points after IG were evaluated by AAS for Zn concentration and analysed by cytometric techniques. We found that Zn-based NPs were readily absorbed and distributed (3 h post IG) in the nanoparticle form throughout the organism. Results suggest, that liver and kidneys were key organs responsible for NPs elimination, while accumulation was observed in the spleen and adipose tissues. Programmed cell death (PCD) is a cellular suicide process, commonly found in organisms, that is important for elimination unnecessary and damaged cells during development and adaptation to abiotic and biotic environmental stresses. PCD is a complex and precise, genetically controlled cellular process, in opposite to non-programmed death, necrosis, in which cells are "killed" by strong abiotic factors. This article shows: the occurrence of PCD during animals and plants ontogenesis, classification of cell death types in these organisms with description of autophagy, apoptosis and necrotic cell death and with discussion on plant cell death by apoptosis. The role of Bcl-2 protein and other proteins involved in the regulation of apoptosis induction and detection in the plant's (whose genomes do not encode these proteins) proteins of analogous function is also discussed. The paper also presents the effects of the expression of animals pro- and anti-apoptotic genes transformed into yeast and plants, and the use of transformed yeast as model to identify in cDNA libraries animal and plant genes involved in regulation of the induction and course of the PCD.

Equine herpesvirus type 1 (EHV-1), a member of Alphaherpesvirinae, has a broad host range in vitro, allowing for study of the mechanisms of productive viral infection, including intracellular transport in various cell cultures. In the current study, quantitative methods (scanning cytometry and real-time PCR) and confocal-microscopy-based image analysis were used to investigate the contribution of microtubules and neurofilaments in the transport of virus in primary murine neurons separately infected with two EHV-1 strains. Confocal-microscopy analysis revealed that viral antigen co-localized with the β-tubulin fibres within the neurites of infected cells. Alterations in β-tubulin and neurofilaments were evaluated by confocal microscopy and scanning cytometry. Real-time PCR analysis demonstrated that inhibitor-induced (nocodazole, EHNA) disruption of microtubules and dynein significantly reduced EHV-1 replication in neurons. Our results suggest that microtubules together with the motor protein - dynein, are involved in EHV-1 replication process in neurons. Zinc oxide nanopowders doped with 1-15 mol % cobalt were produced by the microwave solvothermal synthesis (MSS) technique. The obtained nanoparticles were annealed at 800 °C in nitrogen (99.999%) and in synthetic air. The material nanostructure was investigated by means of the following techniques: X-ray diffraction (XRD), helium pycnometry density, specific surface area (SSA), inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES), extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and with magnetometry using superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID). Irrespective of the Co content, nanoparticles in their initial state present a similar morphology. They are composed of loosely agglomerated spherical particles with wurtzite-type crystal structure with crystallites of a mean size of 30 nm. Annealing to temperatures of up to 800 °C induced the growth of crystallites up to a maximum of 2 μm in diameter. For samples annealed in high purity nitrogen, the precipitation of metallic α-Co was detected for a Co content of 5 mol % or more. For samples annealed in synthetic air, no change of phase structure was detected, except for precipitation of Co3O4 for a Co content of 15 mol %. The results of the magentometry investigation indicated that all as-synthesized samples displayed paramagnetic properties with a contribution of anti-ferromagnetic coupling of Co-Co pairs. After annealing in synthetic air, the samples remained paramagnetic and samples annealed under nitrogen flow showed a magnetic response under the influences of a magnetic field, likely related to the precipitation of metallic Co in nanoparticles.

Merkel cell polyomavirus is of oncogenic significance in approximately 80% of Merkel cell carcinomas. Morphological subcategories of the tumor differ in regard to viral status, the rare combined type being uniformly virus negative and the predominant pure type being mainly virus positive. Indications that different biological subsets of the tumor exist led us to explore this diversity. In an Eastern Canadian cohort of cases (75 patients; mean age, 76 years [range, 43-91]; male/female ratio, 43:32; 51 [68%] pure and 24 [34%] combined tumors), we semiquantitatively compared the immunohistochemical expression of 3 cellular proteins (p53, Bcl-2, and c-kit) in pure versus combined groups. Viral status was known in a subset of cases. The significant overexpression of p53 in the combined group (mean [SD], 153.8 [117.8] versus 121.6 [77.9]; P = .01) and the increased epidermal expression of this protein (p53 patches) in the same group lend credence to a primary etiologic role for sun damage in these cases. Expression of Bcl-2 and c-kit did not differ significantly between the 2 morphological groups. A relative increase in c-kit expression was significantly associated with a virus-negative status (median [interquartile range], 100 [60-115] versus 70 [0-100]; P = .03). Emerging data reveal divergent biological pathways in Merkel cell carcinoma, each with a characteristic immunohistochemical profile. Virus-positive tumors (all pure) exhibit high retinoblastoma protein and low p53 expression, whereas virus-negative cases (few pure and all combined) show high p53 and relatively high c-kit expression. We present results of cathodoluminescence (CL) investigations of high-quality zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorods obtained by an extremely fast hydrothermal method on a silicon substrate. A scanning electron microscopy (SEM) system equipped with CL allows direct comparison of SEM images and CL maps, taken from exactly the same areas of samples. Investigations are performed at a temperature of 5 K. An interlink between sample microstructure and emission properties is investigated. CL confirms a very high quality of ZnO nanorods produced by our method. In addition, the presence of super radiation effects in ZnO nanorod arrays is suggested.

In this paper, we discuss an impact of thin titanium dioxide (TiO(2)) coatings on refractive index (RI) sensitivity and biofunctionalization of long-period gratings (LPGs). The TiO(2) overlays on the LPG surfaces have been obtained using atomic layer deposition (ALD) method. This method allows for a deposition of conformal, thickness-controlled, with well-defined optical properties, and high-RI thin films which are highly desired for optical fiber sensors. It has been found that for LPGs working at a dispersion turning point of higher order cladding modes only tens of nanometers of TiO(2) overlay thickness allow to obtain cladding mode transition effect, and thus significant improvement of RI sensitivity. When the TiO(2) overlay thickness reaches 70 nm, it is possible to obtain RI sensitivity exceeding 6200 nm/RIU in RI range where label-free sensors operate. Moreover, LPGs with TiO(2)-enhanced RI sensitivity have shown improved sensitivity to bacteria endotoxin (E. coli B lipopolysaccharide) detection, when TiO(2) surface is functionalized with endotoxin binding protein (adhesin) of T4 bacteriophage.

Equine herpesvirus type 1 (EHV-1) causes respiratory disease, abortion and neurological disorders in horses. In the present study, we investigated reorganization of the cytoskeleton in neurons infected with two EHV-1 strains: Jan-E (wild-type strain) and Rac-H (attenuated strain). The studies were performed on primary murine neurons, which are an excellent model for studying neurotropism and neurovirulence of EHV-1. We have demonstrated for the first time that EHV-1 infection causes rearrangements in the actin network of neurons that are dependent on the virus strain and its adaptation to cell culture in vitro. Immunofluorescent labeling and confocal microscopy revealed the formation of long, thin projections in neurons infected with the Jan-E strain, which was probably associated with enhanced intracellular spread of the virus. The EHV-1 Rac-H strain caused disruption of the microfilaments system and general depolymerization of actin, but treatment of neurons with cytochalasin D or latrunculin A resulted in limitation of viral replication. It can therefore be assumed that actin filaments are required only at the early stages of infection. Our results allow us to suggest that the actin cytoskeleton participates in EHV-1 infection of primary murine neurons but is not essential, and that other components of the cytoskeleton and/or cellular mechanisms may be also involved during EHV-1 infection.

Recent evidence has invoked immunohistochemical expression of p63 in Merkel cell carcinoma as an adverse prognostic factor. Conflicting data led us to evaluate this. An Eastern Canadian cohort diagnosed between 1990 and 2012 was studied. Demographic and clinical data were obtained from pathology records and Provincial Cancer Registries. Pathological features were evaluated by the investigators. Merkel cell polyomavirus status was known in a subset of cases. Clinicopathological features were correlated with overall survival. The cohort consisted of 83 patients (mean age, 75.8 ± 11.7 years) with a male/female ratio of 1.24:1. In a mean follow-up period of 175 weeks (±177), 51 patients died (61.4%). Of several parameters examined, 6 showed significant adverse associations with survival on univariate analysis: age (hazard ratio [HR], 1.05 [1.02-1.08]), clinical stage (III/IV versus I/II; HR, 2.24 [1.18-4.27]), tumor size (HR, 1.16 [1.05-1.28]), combined versus pure morphology (HR, 1.82 [1.04-3.18]), minimal tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (HR, 2.23 [1.04-4.78]), and expression of p63 (positive in 49.4%; HR, 1.93 [1.09-3.43]). In the stage I/II subgroup, p63 expression was associated with a trend toward poor survival. On multivariate analysis, p63 expression was not significantly associated with reduced survival. Our data support existing evidence that p63 expression in Merkel cell carcinoma carries adverse implications for survival. That it was not an independent prognostic factor may be due to study size and/or its potential as a confounding variable with clinical stage. The use of telepathology for clinical applications in Canada has steadily become more attractive over the last 10 years, driven largely by its potential to provide rapid pathology consulting services throughout the country regardless of the location of a particular institution. Based on this trend, the president of the Canadian Association of Pathologists asked a working group consisting of pathologists, technologists, and healthcare administrators from across Canada to oversee the development of guidelines to provide Canadian pathologists with basic information on how to implement and use this technology. The guidelines were systematically developed, based on available medical literature and the clinical experience of early adopters of telepathology in Canada. While there are many different modalities and applications of telepathology, this document focuses specifically on whole-slide imaging as applied to intraoperative pathology consultation (frozen section), primary diagnosis, expert or second opinions and quality assurance activities. Applications such as hematopathology, microbiology, tumour boards, education, research and technical and/or standard-related issues are not covered.

Selected properties of photovoltaic (PV) structures based on n-type zinc oxide nanorods grown by a low temperature hydrothermal method on p-type silicon substrates (100) are investigated. PV structures were covered with thin films of Al doped ZnO grown by atomic layer deposition acting as transparent electrodes. The investigated PV structures differ in terms of the shapes and densities of their nanorods. The best response is observed for the structure containing closely-spaced nanorods, which show light conversion efficiency of 3.6%.

The aim of the study was to estimate the size of bone marrow-origin stem/progenitor population in 2-year old nonpregnant Holstein-Friesian heifers. Quantitative and qualitative analysis was done using scanning cytometry and confocal microscopy of mammary tissue slices labelled with the combination of two markers: Sca-1 (marker of stem-progenitor cells) and CD45 (marker of hematopoietic cells). The average (+/- SEM) percentage of Sca-1POS CD45 POS cells was 0.89 +/- 0.21. They were localized mainly outside of mammary ducts, in the stroma and sometimes intraluminally. Our results indicate that the subpopulation of Sca-1POS cells bearing CD45 antigen may enrich the niche of mammary stem/progenitor cells from the bone marrow and participate in the growth of the mammary gland in post-pubertal heifers.

A simple fabrication method of silver (Ag) nanoislands on ZnO films is presented. Continuous wave and time-resolved photoluminescence and transmission are employed to investigate modifications of visible and UV emissions of ZnO brought about by coupling to localized surface plasmons residing on Ag nanoislands. The size of the nanoislands, determining their absorption and scattering efficiencies, is found to be an important factor governing plasmonic modification of optical response of ZnO films. The presence of the Ag nanoislands of appropriate dimensions causes a strong (threefold) increase in emission intensity and up to 1.5 times faster recombination. The experimental results are successfully described by model calculations within the Mie theory.

This paper reports the observation of Tb(3+) 4f-4f emission gain in ZrO2 nanocrystals stabilized by Y2O3 as the amount of stabilizer increases from 0% to 10% mol. The nanocrystals were obtained via microwave solvothermal technology. The photoluminescence properties of as-grown samples are investigated. The possibility of biological applications of the material is tested on living organisms (mice). The result indicates the potential use of the studied material as a luminescent nanomarker.

The cj0183 and cj0588 genes identified in the Campylobacter jejuni NCTC 11168 genome encode proteins with homology to virulence factors found in other bacteria. Previous studies showed that single mutation in the cj0183 gene does not affect adhesion of C. jejuni to the Caco-2 cell line whereas protein encoded by cj0588 is involved in adherence to the Caco-2 cells. In the presented study differences in invasion index were observed between mutants in both genes and single mutation of cj0588 in 81116 and 81-176 C. jejuni strains This fact indicates that Cj0183 protein might play some role in invasion of bacteria into host cells.

Equid herpesvirus 1 (EHV-1), like other members of the Alphaherpesvirinae, is a neurotropic virus, that causes latent infections in the nervous system of the natural host. All alphaherpesviruses have developed sophisticated strategies to interfere with the host cell apoptotic mechanisms, but the ability of EHV-1 to induce apoptosis in neurons has not been determined yet. In this study, apoptotic and necrotic changes in cultured murine neurons were methods identifying key stages of apoptosis. These methods have demonstrated characteristic apoptosis features, like DNA fragmentation, chromatin condensation, membrane blebbing and cell shrinkage in the infected cells. It seems likely that apoptosis was the predominant way of cell death in EHV-1-infected murine neurons. However, we showed also that during acute EHV-1 infection the majority of infected neurons remained unchanged and survived for more than eight weeks in culture, suggesting some protective mechanisms induced by the virus. Furthermore, it was shown that infection of neurons with EHV-1 has no significant influence on the level of the caspase 3, 7, and 8. We speculate that the control of apoptosis may be the key mechanism regulating the balance between productive and latent infection at the site of virus persistence.

The effect of 2-48 h treatment of Lupinus angustifolius L. roots with lead nitrate at the concentration of 10(-4) M on the nucleoli in meristematic cells was investigated. In the lead presence the number of ring-shaped as well as segregated nucleoli increased especially after 12-48 h of treatment, while spindle-shaped nucleoli appeared after 24 h and 48 h. Lead presence also increased the frequency of cells with silver-stained particles in the nucleus and the number of these particles especially from the 12th hour of treatment. It was accompanied by significant decline of nucleolar area. Analysis of these cells in transmission electron microscope confirmed the presence of ring-shaped and segregated nucleoli. Moreover, electron microscopy revealed compact structure nucleoli without granular component. Additionally, one to three oval-shaped fibrillar structures attached to nucleolus or lying free in the nucleoplasm were visible. The possible mechanism of lead toxicity to the nucleolus is briefly discussed.

Interest in the problem of plant nitrogen nutrition is increasing. Certain plants can use not only inorganic nitrogen, but also intact amino acids and short peptides. According to our studies, the roots of several agricultural and wild-living plants are able to exude proteases and by using them to create a pool of accessible N. This mini-review offers an overview of the problem of protease exudation by plant roots and its potential role in plant nitrogen nutrition.

Viruses can reorganize the cytoskeleton and restructure the host cell transport machinery. During infection viruses use different cellular cues and signals to enlist the cytoskeleton for their mission. However, each virus specifically affects the cytoskeleton structure. Thus, the aim of our study was to investigate the cytoskeletal changes in homologous equine dermal (ED) and heterologous Vero cell lines infected with either equine herpesvirus 1 (EHV-1) strain Rac-H or Jan-E. We found that Rac-H strain disrupted actin fibers and reduced F-actin level in ED cells, whereas the virus did not influence Vero cell cytoskeleton. Conversely, the Jan-E strain induced polymerization of both F-actin and MT in Vero cells, but not in ED cells. Confocal-microscopy analysis revealed that alpha-tubulin colocalized with viral antigen in ED cells infected with either Rac-H or Jan-E viruses. Alterations in F-actin and alpha-tubulin were evaluated by confocal microscopy, Microimage analysis and scanning cytometry. This unique combination allowed precise interpretation of confocal-based images showing the cellular events induced by EHV-1. We conclude that examination of viral-induced pathogenic effects in species specific cell lines is more symptomatic than in heterologous cell lines.

ZnTe-ZnO core-shell radial heterostructures were grown using a new method of combining molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) and atomic layer deposition (ALD). Zinc telluride nanowires (core) were grown on a GaAs substrate using gold catalyzed vapor-liquid-solid mechanism. An atomic layer deposition technique using diethyl zinc and deionized water as precursors was applied for zinc oxide shell formation. The core-shell ZnTe-ZnO heterostructures thus obtained were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction and photoluminescence measurements.

Large-conductance Ca(2+)-activated K(+) channels (BKCa channels) are highly expressed in human glioma cells. It has been reported that BK(Ca) channels are present in the inner mitochondrial membrane of the human glioma cell line LN229. In the present study we investigated whether BK(Ca)-channel openers, such as CGS7181 (ethyl 2-hydroxy-1-[[(4-methylphenyl)amino]oxo]-6-trifluoromethyl-1H-indole-3-carboxylate) and CGS7184 (ethyl 1-[[(4-chlorophenyl)amino]oxo]-2-hydroxy-6-trifluoromethyl-1H-indole-3-carboxylate), affect the functioning of LN229 glioma cell mitochondria in situ. In the micromolar concentration range CGS7181 and CGS7184 induced glioma cell death. Morphological and cytometric analyses confirmed that both substances trigger the glioma cell death. This effect was not inhibited by the pan-caspase inhibitor z-VAD-fmk. Lack of DNA laddering, PARP cleavage, and caspase 3 activation suggested that glioma cell death was not of the apoptotic type. We examined the effect of CGS7184 on mitochondrial membrane potential and mitochondrial respiration. Potassium channel opener CGS7184 increased cell respiration and induced mitochondrial membrane depolarization. The latter was dependent on the presence of Ca(2+) in the external medium. It was shown that CGS7184 induced an increase of cytosolic Ca(2+) concentration due to endoplasmic reticulum store depletion. In conclusion, our results show that CGS7181 and CGS7184 induce glioma cell death by increasing the cytosolic calcium concentration followed by activation of calpains.

Nitrogen is one of the crucial elements that regulate plant growth and development. It is well-established that plants can acquire nitrogen from soil in the form of low-molecular-mass compounds, namely nitrate and ammonium, but also as amino acids. Nevertheless, nitrogen in the soil occurs mainly as proteins or proteins complexed with other organic compounds. Proteins are believed not to be available to plants. However, there is increasing evidence to suggest that plants can actively participate in proteolysis by exudation of proteases by roots and can obtain nitrogen from digested proteins. To gain insight into the process of organic nitrogen acquisition from proteins by leek roots (Allium porrum L. cv. Bartek), casein, bovine serum albumin and oxidized B-chain of insulin were used; their degradation products, after exposure to plant culture medium, were studied using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). Casein was degraded to a great extent, but the level of degradation of bovine serum albumin and the B-chain of insulin was lower. Proteases exuded by roots cleaved proteins, releasing low-molecular-mass peptides that can be taken up by roots. Various peptide fragments produced by digestion of the oxidized B-chain of insulin suggested that endopeptidase, but also exopeptidase activity was present. After identification, proteases were similar to cysteine protease from Arabidopsis thaliana. In conclusion, proteases exuded by roots may have great potential in the plant nitrogen nutrition.

We report on the observation of optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) in bismuth-doped silica glass. To explain the results of the experiment we adopted the intramolecular charge transfer model for Bi(5+)O(n)(2-) molecules in the frame of a semiempirical molecular orbitals approach. The results of our calculations are in good agreement with observed features of luminescence and ODMR experiments.

This study is concerned with the properties and bioactivity and biocompatibility of hydroxyapatite islets deposited on a new composite layer Ti3P+Ti2Ni type produced by a duplex method on Ti6Al4V titanium alloy. The microstructure and chemical composition of a produced surface layers and hydroxyapatite coating were investigated using scanning electron microscope equipped with EDS. Their bioactivity were examined in simulated body fluid and analyzed with XPS. Dissolution of hydroxyapatite was tested in culture medium during 12 days of incubation. Biocompatibility was investigated in osteoblast Saos2 line culture in contact with the tested material. Cell proliferation and activity were determined by the MTT test and measurement of alkaline phosphatase activity, respectively. Cell distribution was analyzed under a confocal microscope. The produced surface layers have a diffusion character with fine-grained structure and about 4 microm thick external zone of Ti3P. The experiments revealed higher bioactivity and biocompatibility of the Ti3P in comparison with reference titanium alloy. Hydroxyapatite islets were 0.8 mm in diameter and about 300 nm thick. They partially dissolved during the experiment what lead to formation on Ti3P between hydroxyapatite islets a precipitate containing Ca and P. Biocompatibility analyzed under confocal microscope in range of cell adhesion with osteoblast cells of Saos2 line revealed initial the highest osteoblast adhesion on Ti3P between hydroxyapatite islets and increasing on hydroxyapatite during following days. Cell were characterized by high proliferation and ALP activity. Therefore, the high bioactivity and biocompatibility of Ti3P and profitable hydroxyapatite properties make this composite layer promising for increasing implant fixation in vivo.

This paper reports on the role of proteases secreted by roots in nitrogen capture by plants. The study was conducted on aseptically cultivated wheat seedlings (Triticum aestivum cv. Tacher) obtained from embryos isolated from grains. Seedlings were cultivated for 21 days on deionised water, Murashige Skoog medium (MS), MS without inorganic nitrogen (IN), and MS without IN, in which IN was replaced by casein (0.01%, 0.1% or 1%). Comparison of seedlings grown on these media showed that casein entirely compensated for the lack of inorganic nitrogen in the medium. Shoots and roots of seedlings cultivated on MS medium with this protein had higher fresh weight than those cultivated on MS medium without casein. The increase in fresh weight of seedlings was correlated with casein concentration and proteolytic activity in the medium. In conclusion, wheat that uses proteases secreted by the roots can directly utilise proteins in the medium as a source of nitrogen without prior digestion by microbial proteases and without protein mineralisation. These results suggest the important role of organic nitrogen fertilisers in increasing wheat yield.

Our recent studies of structure and function of gastrointestinal tract mucosa revealed that the domestification of Sus scrofa corresponds with the significant slowing of the organ development. On top of genetic potential, the nutritional factors (or more precisely - lack of certain biologically active substances in the feed of pregnant sows) are responsible. Moreover, feeding neonates with milk replacers instead of mother's milk further slows down the development. This is manifested by reduced mitotic activity in the crypts and enhanced apoptosis of enterocytes. The negative effects consist of slower replacement of fetal type, vacuolated enterocytes to adult type enterocytes, modified profile of brush border enzymes, alterations in intestinal mucosa barrier, higher susceptibility to infectious agents, and many others. On the other hand, farmers in order to intensify the production, shorten the suckling period imposing the neonatal piglets to be weaned at 3-4 weeks of life and even earlier. Altogether, it makes the weaning disorders one of the most important problems in pig husbandry, and the mortality of piglets in the leading pig-producing countries still reaches 10%. A number of strategies have been developed to counteract the post-weaning problems. One of them is to stimulate the development of the gastrointestinal tract of the neonate by supplementation of the sow diet with certain biologically active substances and plants. The other idea is to speed up the postnatal development of the gut mucosa for example by plant lectins. Lessons from pig studies can be also useful in human nutrition and medicine since the development of porcine gastrointestinal tract shows a great similarity to that of humans.

The aim of our study was to find out if the culture medium of aseptically cultivated seedlings exhibits proteolytic activity and if this event is universal in angiospermous plants. Seedlings of 15 agricultural and wild-living plant species were cultivated for 14days without any addition of nutrients. Our studies showed that roots of higher plants could secrete proteases and that levels of proteolytic activity in the culture medium of individual species (and cultivars of the same species) could be significantly different. The differences between quantities of the secreted proteases were connected neither with the fresh weight of the growing seedlings nor with the surface of the root system. No proteins were required to induce secretion of proteases. The culture medium of a few studied species (Allium porrum, Zea mays, Helianthus annuus) showed the highest proteolytic activity at pH 7. Studies of the influence of standard protease inhibitors showed that examined proteases belong to the cysteine protease family. The results suggest that the apical parts of roots exuded proteases more intensively than mature parts. Our studies suggest that some plant species could develop a strategy to actively increase the level of free amino acids in the soil solution as a source of N. Our results may contribute to studying plant N nutrition in natural ecosystems and to increasing yield after organic fertilization of agricultural species.

Development of the small intestinal epithelium in early postnatal period has a significant influence on pig's survival rate and further productivity. The aim of this research was to verify whether the diet supplementation of pregnant and lactating sow with a blend of bioactive substances (flax seed, rapeseed, linden inflorescence, taurine, L-carnitine and tocopherol acetate) had an effect on the development of intestinal epithelium in their offspring. The doses of bioactive substances were calculated to meet the demands for optimal supply of the pig fetuses and newborns. Pig neonates from two groups of sows, control and supplemented, were sacrificed at the day 1, 2, 4, 7 and 14 of life. The samples taken from mid-jejunum were evaluated for mitosis (Ki67), apoptosis (active caspase 3), autophagy (MAP I LC3), and DNA damage (p53). Increase of mitotic index was noticed at day 1, 4 and 7 for supplemented group when compared to the control. Reduction of apoptotic index was observed at day 2 as compared to control. A tendency toward elevated autophagy was observed during the first 2-4 postnatal days in both groups. p53 expression was significantly lower in supplemented group as compared to control. Overall, the mitosis to programmed cell death ratio was increased and the maturation of epithelial cells quickened. We suppose that the supplementation of pregnant and lactating sow diet with bioactive substances enhanced maturation of the small intestinal epithelium in their offspring during the early postnatal period.

In the intestinal mucosa of pig, calf and rat neonates, we observed the cells die in the packets which suggests involvement of some paracrine factors. The death signal was transferred via tissue continuum as well as across the gut lumen, and the involvement of TGF-beta1 and TNFalpha was demonstrated. Present study aimed to clarify the molecular mechanisms of programmed cell death in the mucosa of the small intestine of pig neonates. Groups (packets) of cells and the neighboring cells underwent apoptosis, and expressed an enhanced TGF-RII. In the dying cells the death signal promoted via TGF-RII was associated with enhanced expression of active caspase 8, TGF-beta1, TNFalpha and Bid. Quantitative study showed that high expression of TGF-beta1 was positively correlated with expression of BID and negatively with BCL-2, illustrating the transmission of signal from TGF-RII through SMAD cascade and RunX protein. We hypothesize that TGF-beta1 sensitizes the enterocytes for TNFalpha signaling and both cytokines control the apoptosis process in the gut epithelium. Intensive mitosis triggers many errors in DNA replication, and the role of p53 is to detect them and promote either repair or apoptosis. During first days of live all damaged cells were directed towards apoptosis while at day 7 at least some of them were repaired. Autophagy, the second form of programmed cell death, was recognized by its key marker MAP I LC3. Our data showed the colocalization of MAP I LC3 with active caspase 3 thus suggesting a coexistence between these two forms of cell death, at least in the early postnatal life.

Rare-earth-doped nanoparticles are promising materials for fluorescent labeling, as they are characterized by a high Stokes shift, narrow emission spectra, long lifetimes, minimized photobleaching, and low toxicity. We examined the structural and optical properties of europium-doped gadolinium oxide nanoparticles synthesized by the flame pyrolysis method, with specific emphasis on full spectral characterization and fluorescence kinetics. The emission-excitation characterization revealed the presence of predominantly monoclinic but also highly luminescent cubic phases with a prominent oxygen-to-europium charge-transfer band in the 230-260 nm range. A broad emission band in the visible region, corresponding to a similar band in undoped Gd(2)O(3), related to the matrix surface defects, was observed in time-gated spectroscopy of doped nanopowders. All of the examined nanopowders showed very short decay components, on the order of 2 ns, and much longer millisecond decay times characteristic of lanthanide ions. At intermediate times, on the order of 20-100 ns, a complex behavior of the decay was observed, indicative of progressive energy transfer to the lanthanide ion, which varied with different intrashell transitions. Structural characterization data by means of XRD measurements allowed for unambiguous determination of the Eu:Gd(2)O(3) crystallographic structure and cell dimensions to be consistent with a predominantly monoclinic phase.

The use of soybean in human and animal nutrition is limited because of high content of bioactive compounds: enzyme inhibitors, polyphenols, goitrogens, phytates, saponins, sugars, and agglutinins. The damage of intestinal mucosa structure was previously observed in animals fed soybean supplemented diets. Hence, the objectives of the presented study were to compare intensity of epithelium remodeling processes in different intestinal segments, and to evaluate the influence of the 1% of soybean dietary supplementation on the processes in intestinal mucosa. The experiment was performed on 30 Wistar rats fed AIN-93 based diets. Animals were divided randomly into three groups: control (CTRL), with 1% of raw soybean (RS) and with 1% of soaked and boiled soybean (BS). The samples of: duodenum (DUO), proximal jejunum (PROX), mid-jejunum (MID), distal-jejunum (DIST) and ileum (ILE) were collected. The following processes in these samples were evaluated: mitosis (Ki-67), apoptosis (Cpp32), autophagy (MAP I LC3) and DNA damage (p53). Present data show that modification of soybean by soaking and subsequent boiling markedly influences the enterocyte turnover in the small intestine mucosa. Increased mitotic ratio in the intestine of rats fed with boiled soybean masks the negative effects of soybean on the small intestine structure.

Background: Islet cell transplantation is a promising method to restore insulin independence to patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus. A main problem in clinical islet transplantation is the fact that only a small percentage of allogeneic islet-transplanted type 1 diabetic patients can completely omit insulin injections after transplantation. One reason for the impaired survival of islet grafts is aberration of the function of islets due to toxic agents, including oxygen radicals and nitric oxide, which arise during warm or cold ischemic time. Therefore, in clinical islet transplantation, islets have been preserved with a mixture of antioxidants to reduce free radical-mediated damage of transplanted beta cells. Our aim was to examine hepatic tissue after metabolic normalization following intraportal islet transplantation after application of sulforaphane., Materials and Methods: Islets were isolated from pancreata of WAG rats. Sulforaphane (24 mg/kg) was administered 24 hours before isolated islets were transplanted into the liver through the portal vein (1200 +/- 100 per rat). At 9 months after transplantation the animals were killed and liver tissue removed for morphological examination., Results: This report indicated that the intrahepatic portal vein site was indeed an excellent locus for implantation of free pancreatic islets. The islet grafts developed rich vascularization derived from both venous and arterial sources. The islet cells maintained their structural and functional integrity after implantation., Conclusion: Our results showed that sulforaphane improved islet function in vivo, indicating that combination of a free radical scavenger and an antioxidant (sulforaphane) may be used to increase the effectiveness of islet transplantation.
