Background: Acute respiratory infections (ARIs) pose global health challenges, with major outbreaks affecting healthcare systems and resulting in significant morbidity and mortality. We aimed to identify distinctive signs or symptoms correlated with ARIs for utilizing syndromic surveillance., Methods: We used data from national Korean databases to examine correlations between various symptoms and the reported ARI viruses in children aged under and over 5 years., Results: In children under 5 years old, respiratory symptoms were strongly correlated with human adenovirus, human respiratory syncytial virus, and human rhinovirus. Patients aged over 5 years displayed more diverse patterns, with varied correlations. Machine learning (ML) methods provide a pathway to accurately predict molecular properties, leveraging patterns derived from structure-property relationships within materials databases. This approach holds significant importance in drug discovery and materials design, where the rapid, efficient screening of molecules can accelerate the development of new pharmaceuticals and chemical materials for highly specialized target application. Unsupervised and self-supervised learning methods applied to graph-based or geometric models have garnered considerable traction. More recently, transformer-based language models have emerged as powerful tools. Nevertheless, their application entails considerable computational resources, owing to the need for an extensive pretraining process on a vast corpus of unlabeled chemical data sets. To this end, we present a semisupervised strategy that harnesses substructure vector embeddings in conjunction with a ML-based feature selection workflow to predict various molecular and drug properties. We evaluate the efficacy of our modeling methodology across a diverse range of data sets, encompassing both regression and classification tasks. Our findings demonstrate superior performance compared to most existing state-of-the-art algorithms, while offering advantages in terms of balancing model accuracy with computational requirements. Moreover, our approach provides deeper insights into feature interactions that are essential for model interpretability. A case study is conducted to predict the lipophilicity of chemical molecules, exemplifying the robustness of our strategy. The result underscores the importance of meticulous feature analysis and selection over a mere reliance on predictive modeling with a high degree of algorithmic complexity.

The reaction of terrylene in p-terphenyl with molecular oxygen is reinvestigated by TIRF-microscopy with λ exc =488 nm or λ exc =561 nm and 488 nm. A similar range of fluorescent products is obtained under both experimental conditions with a reaction quantum yield Φ r >10 -7 for those molecules which undergo the photoreaction. The majority of these oxygen-susceptible molecules reacts via an electronically relaxed, dark intermediate, presumably an endoperoxide, with a lifetime of off >~20 s. From this time constant, an activation energy E A <0.8 eV is estimated for the transition from the intermediate to the final product, the diepoxide, which nicely agrees with values calculated for the terrylene-derivative TDI. However, ~20 % of all reacting molecules at λ exc =561 nm and even ~40 % at λ exc =488 nm show an immediate change of the fluorescence colour within the time resolution of the experiment, bypassing any dark intermediate. Based on this experimentally observed impact of the excitation energy and the lack of relevant excited-state absorption, we hypothesize that oxygen forms a complex with ground-state terrylene which then undergoes a quasi-unimolecular reaction in the excited-state before vibrational relaxation takes place., (© 2025 The Authors. Deletion of the short arm of chromosome 1 (1p) increases recurrence rates in meningiomas by up to 33%, regardless of tumor grade, correlating with absence of intracellular alkaline phosphatase enzyme activity. Current screening methods for 1p deletion like fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and loss of heterozygosity (LOH) analysis are resource-intensive. This study evaluated AlkaPhos, a novel fluorescent probe, for detecting alkaline phosphatase in meningioma cells and compared findings with FISH, LOH, and histochemical analysis. AlkaPhos sensitivity in detecting alkaline phosphatase on BEN-MEN-1 cells and primary meningioma cultures was assessed via microscopic fluorescent ratio measurements. FISH and LOH were conducted on the same tumors to detect 1p deletions. Histochemical analysis served as a reference. AlkaPhos results were compared with FISH, LOH, and histochemical analysis. AlkaPhos effectively indicated alkaline phosphatase activity in BEN-MEN-1 cells and correctly identified 1p deletion in 8/14 primary meningioma cultures, matching FISH and LOH findings, respectively. AlkaPhos showed potential superiority over histochemical analysis in identifying tumors with 1p deletion and LOH of 1p. AlkaPhos bears potential as a future diagnostic tool for identifying alkaline phosphatase absence in meningiomas, indicative of 1p deletion. Extensive neovascularization is a hallmark of glioblastoma (GBM). In addition to supplying oxygen and nutrients, vascular endothelial cells provide trophic support to GBM cells via paracrine signaling. Here we report that Endocan (ESM1), an endothelial-secreted proteoglycan, confers enhanced proliferative, migratory, and angiogenic properties to GBM cells and regulates their spatial identity. Mechanistically, Endocan exerts at least part of its functions via direct binding and activation of the PDGFRA receptor. Subsequent downstream signaling enhances chromatin accessibility of the Myc promoter and upregulates Myc expression inducing stable phenotypic changes in GBM cells. Furthermore, Endocan confers radioprotection on GBM cells in vitro and in vivo. Inhibition of Endocan-PDGFRA signaling with ponatinib increases survival in the Esm1 wild-type but not in the Esm1 knock-out mouse GBM model. Importance: The neuropathological links underlying the association between changes in liver function and AD have not yet been clearly elucidated., Objective: We aimed to examine the relationship between liver function markers and longitudinal changes in Alzheimer's disease (AD) core pathologies., Design: Data from the Korean Brain Aging Study for the Early Diagnosis and Prediction of Alzheimer's Disease, a longitudinal cohort study initiated in 2014, were utilized., Setting: Community and memory clinic setting., Participants: Three hundred forty-seven older adults., Main Outcome and Measures: Participants underwent baseline and 2-year follow-up evaluations, including liver function assessments and various brain imaging techniques, such as amyloid and tau PET, FDG-PET, and MRI). Liver function indicators [alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), and total bilirubin] were examined as exposure variables., Results: Higher baseline ALT levels were associated with a greater increase in beta-amyloid deposition over 2 years [β = 0.166, Bonferroni-corrected P (P B ) = 0.012], while lower total bilirubin levels were associated with a greater increase in tau deposition over the same period (β = -0.570, P B < 0.001). In contrast, AST alone showed no significant association with changes of AD pathologies., Conclusions and Relevance: The findings suggest a possible link between lower liver function and the accumulation of core AD pathologies in the brain. Background: Sparse leaf patch (SLP) is one of the most significant diseases affecting seashore paspalum (Paspalum vaginatum Sw.), caused by Microdochium paspali. Fast and accurate detection of this pathogen is crucial for effective disease management. However, conventional culture-based methods are time-consuming and often compromised by the presence of other saprophytic or endophytic fungi., Results: In this study, we developed a real-time fluorescent quantitative (q)PCR method based on the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of the ribosomal RNA gene to rapidly detect and quantify M. paspali. The qPCR assay demonstrated the ability to detect all 12 tested isolates of M. paspali, with no cross-reactions observed when tested against 30 isolates of other fungal pathogens from turfgrass samples. The detection limit of the qPCR method was as low as 3.65 × 10 2 copies μL -1 of M. paspali genomic DNA, and the entire detection process could be completed within 1 h. The fluorescence signal was detectable in the leaf tissues of seashore paspalum without apparent disease symptoms as early as 24 h postinoculation with M. paspali. Moreover, the qPCR method successfully detected M. paspali in both asymptomatic and symptomatic turfgrass samples, including leaf, stem, root and rhizosphere soil, indicating that this assay can significantly enhance the detection of M. paspali., Conclusion: The study developed a rapid real-time qPCR assay for the detection of M. paspali causing SLP on seashore paspalum and in environmental samples, which has important implications for early warning and management of SLP. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry., (© 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.)

Background: The accurate interpretation of the BRCA1 /2 variant is critical for diagnosing and treating hereditary breast and ovarian cancers. ClinVar is a widely used public database for genetic variants. Conflicting classifications of pathogenicity can occur when different submitters categorize the same genetic variant inconsistently as pathogenic (PV), likely pathogenic (LPV), likely benign (LBV), benign (BV), or a variant of uncertain significance (VUS). The conflicting ClinVar BRCA1/2 variant classifications hinder clinical decision making. We reinterpreted 450 BRCA1 missense variants with conflicting interpretations in ClinVar (accessed on 20 December 2022)., Methods: VarSome and the BRCA1/BRCA2: CanVIG-UK gene-specific guidance (CanVIG-UK) classifications were compared, and the five original classifications were consolidated into three categories (PV/LPV, VUS, and BV/LBV). Consensus analysis was performed between re-extracted ClinVar data and VarSome and CanVIG-UK results., Results: The three-category classification of the variants resulted in an overall concordance rate of 58.9% for BRCA1 missense variant interpretation between CanVIG-UK and VarSome, with VarSome having rates of 11.3, 24.7, and 64.0% for PV/LPV, VUS, and BV/LBV classifications and CanVIG-UK having rates of 11.1, 51.6, and 37.3% for P/LPV, VUS, and BV/LBV classifications, respectively. No variants classified as PV/LPV in VarSome were classified as BV/LBV in CanVIG-UK and vice versa. By 1 May 2024, 3.8% (17/450) of these conflicting variants reached a consensus classification in ClinVar and were definitively classified (9 PV/LPV, 1 VUS, and 7 BV/LBV)., Conclusions: VarSome and CanVIG-UK have different features that help improve the accuracy of pathogenicity classification, highlighting the potential complementary use of both tools to support clinical decision making.

Anemia is a common and disabling complication of chronic kidney disease (CKD). Current therapies can be burdensome, and full correction of anemia is limited by cardiovascular side effects. New approaches that may offer additional therapeutic options are needed. We explored the anti-anemic effects of erythroferrone, an erythroid hormone that induces iron mobilization by suppressing the master iron-regulatory hormone hepcidin. In a preclinical murine model of adenine-induced CKD, transgenic augmentation of erythroferrone mobilized iron, increased hemoglobin concentrations by approximately 2 g/dl, and modestly improved renal function without affecting systemic or renal inflammation, fibrosis, or markers of mineral metabolism. Introduction: We investigated the hypothesis that tau burden in the locus coeruleus (LC) correlates with tau accumulation in cortical regions according to the Braak stages and examined whether the relationships differed according to cortical amyloid beta (Aβ) deposition., Methods: One hundred and seventy well-characterized participants from an ongoing cohort were included. High-resolution T1, tau positron emission tomography (PET), and amyloid PET were obtained., Results: LC tau burden was significantly linked to global tau in neocortical regions, as was tau in both early Braak stage (stage I/II) and later Braak stage areas. This relationship was significant only in Aβ-positive individuals. While LC tau did not directly impact memory, it was indirectly associated with delayed memory through mediation or moderation pathways., Discussion: The findings from living human brains support the idea that LC tau closely relates to subsequent cortical tau accumulation, particularly among individuals with pathological Aβ accumulation, and identify LC tau burden as a promising indicator of cognitive trajectories of AD., Highlights: Tau burden in the LC was significantly associated with cortical tau accumulation. Objective: The aim of this single-center case series is to demonstrate that an ultra-low dose (ULD) can be routinely achieved in the hybrid operating room in standard endovascular aortic repair (EVAR) for infrarenal abdominal aortic aneurysm by adjusting the manufacturer's predefined imaging parameters, hardware configurations and user protocols (including benchmarking)., Methods: The hybrid operating room manufacturer predefined EVAR software setup of the dose exposure control software (OPTIQ, Siemens Healthineers, Forchheim, Germany) at our university medical center was screened for possible improvements regarding radiation dose application. Tests on a water-equivalent as well as polymethyl methacrylate phantom model to assess the impact of technical settings were performed, including comparison of settings for exposure control software, different magnification, collimation configurations and detector distance. All results were transferred into modified setups for the exposure control software and a new ULD procedure protocol for EVAR. Additionally, to standardize the clinical pathway, the Lucerne EVAR Milestone Approach (LEMA) was introduced including preoperative, perioperative, and postoperative milestones for technical procedure content and dose benchmarking during EVAR. A validation of the new settings including revised software setup, procedure protocol, and applicability of LEMA on a consecutive EVAR case series was conducted. Ten consecutive patients undergoing EVAR for low and medium complexity infrarenal abdominal aortic aneurysm were included. The primary outcome parameter was intraoperative dose area product (DAP, measured in Gy·cm 2 ). Secondary outcomes were median fluoroscopy time (in minutes:seconds), cumulative air kerma (in mGy), clinical success, and occurrence of endoleaks., Results: New ULD settings compared with previous manufacturers standard settings of dose exposure control software reduced DAP for both fluoroscopy (0.0382 Gy·cm 2 /min vs 0.3 Gy·cm 2 /min) and angiography (2.36 Gy·cm 2 /min vs 2.48 Gy·cm 2 /min). Digital magnification and collimation decreased DAP. Application of the new ULD standard EVAR protocol resulted in a median DAP of 5.6 Gy·cm 2  (range, 3.54-12.1 Gy·cm 2 ). Median fluoroscopy time was 16 minutes and 32 seconds. Type I endoleaks occurred in no patients (0%), type II in five patients (50%), and type III in no patients (0%). Introduction: The influence of genetic variation on tau protein aggregation, a key factor in Alzheimer's disease (AD), remains not fully understood. We aimed to identify novel genes associated with brain tau deposition using pathway-based candidate gene association analysis in a Korean cohort., Methods: We analyzed data for 146 older adults from the well-established Korean AD continuum cohort (Korean Brain Aging Study for the Early Diagnosis and Prediction of Alzheimer's Disease; KBASE). Fifteen candidate genes related to both tau pathways and AD were selected. Association analyses were performed using PLINK: A tool set for whole-genome association and population-based linkage analyses (PLINK) on tau deposition measured by 18 F-AV-1451 positron emission tomography (PET) scans, with additional voxel-wise analysis conducted using Statistical Parametric Mapping 12 (SPM12)., Results: CLU and FYN were significantly associated with tau deposition, with the most significant single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) being rs149413552 and rs57650567, respectively. These SNPs were linked to increased tau across key brain regions and showed additive effects with apolipoprotein E (APOE) ε4., Discussion: CLU and FYN may play specific roles in tau pathophysiology, offering potential targets for biomarkers and therapies., Highlights: Gene-based analysis identified CLU and FYN as associated with tau deposition on positron emission tomography (PET). Lactic acid bacteria are commonly used in plant-based fermentation to reduce off-flavor and improve sensory characteristics. However, there have been few studies on Latilactobacillus sakei for plant-based yogurt fermentation and, particularly, its metabolic features at the genomic level remain unclear. This study aims to analyze the fermentation characteristics of the L. sakei DCF0720 strain and compare genetics and metabolic relations. For this, DCF0720 was used to ferment the black soybean milk and conduct the physicochemical analysis and sensory test. The genomic and metabolic analyses were performed by complete genome sequencing and 500 MHz 1 H NMR, respectively. As a result, DCF0720 exhibited enhanced fermentation performance and sensory evaluations at 37 °C compared to 30 °C, which is generally recognized as the optimal growth temperature for most L. sakei strains. It also produced flavor enhancing volatile compounds such as acetoin and hydroxyacetone, possessing all three key genes for acetoin biosynthesis. DCF0720 lacks 2,3-butanediol dehydrogenase, which leads to the inhibition of acetoin production. DCF0720 possesses a complete pathway to utilize primary black soybean carbon sources such as sucrose, raffinose, and stachyose. DCF0720 also possesses genes for the GH28 family, including the key enzymes in the hydrolysis of pectin substances, which means eliminating the main soybean nonstarch polysaccharides. This study demonstrates that DCF0720 is a suitable starter for plant-based yogurt fermentation, providing a better understanding of fermentation conditions with genetic and metabolic features for black soybean yogurt. Photoacids undergo an increase in acidity upon electronic excitation, enabling excited-state proton transfer (ESPT) reactions. A multitude of compounds that allow ESPT has been identified and integrated in numerous applications, as is outlined by reviewing the rich history of photoacid research reaching back more than 90 years. In particular, achievements together with ambitions and challenges are highlighted from a combined experimental and theoretical perspective. Besides explicating the spectral signatures, transient ion-pair species, and electronic states involved in an ESPT, special emphasis is put on the diversity of methods used for studying photoacids as well as on the effects of the environment on the ESPT, illustrated in detail for 8-hydroxypyrene-1,3,6-trisulfonate (HPTS) and the naphthols as examples of prototypical photoacids. The development of exceptionally acidic super-photoacids and magic photoacids is subsequently discussed, which opens the way to applications even in aprotic solvents and provides additional insight into the mechanisms underlying ESPT. In the overview of highlights from theory, a comprehensive picture of the scope of studies on HPTS is presented, along with the general conceptualization of the electronic structure of photoacids and approaches for the quantification of excited-state acidity. Introduction: Despite the recognized importance of including ethnic diversity in Alzheimer's disease (AD) research, substantial knowledge gaps remain, particularly in Asian populations., Methods: RNA sequencing was performed on blood samples from the Korean Brain Aging Study for the Early Diagnosis and Prediction of Alzheimer's Disease (KBASE) to perform differential gene expression (DGE), gene co-expression network, gene-set enrichment, and machine learning analyses for amyloid beta (Aβ) deposition on positron emission tomography., Results: DGE analysis identified 265 dysregulated genes associated with Aβ deposition and replicated three AD-associated genes in an independent Korean cohort. Network analysis identified two modules related to pathways including a natural killer (NK) cell-mediated immunity. Background: We investigated whether combining T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings and clinical risk categories improves upon established prognostic indicators of oncological outcomes in prostate cancer., Methods: Patients who underwent radical prostatectomy, but not preoperative hormone therapy, radiotherapy, or chemotherapy, for localized prostate cancer at Seoul National University Bundang Hospital from October 2007 to April 2016 were included. MRIs were classified according to the Prostate Imaging-Reporting and Data System (PI-RADS). Patients were divided into the following five groups: 1, no focal suspicious lesion; 2, organ-confined suspicious lesion PI-RADS ≤3; 3, organ-confined suspicious lesion PI-RADS 4 or 5; 4, suspicious lesion with extraprostatic extension (EPE), no seminal vesicle invasion (SVI); 5, suspicious lesion with EPE and SVI. Risk classified according to the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) and MRI findings were combined to analyze survival curves for biochemical recurrence (BCR)-free and metastasis-free survival. The area under a time-dependent receiver operating characteristic was analyzed for event prediction after 5 years., Results: We analyzed 1,290 patients. In multivariate Cox regression models, PI-RADS ≥4 (hazard ratio [HR] 2.33, P  < 0.001), EPE (HR 1.46, P  = 0.027), SVI (HR 5.03, P  < 0.001) and NCCN high-risk (HR 2.33, 95% CI 1.66-3.26, P  < 0.001) were associated with BCR. For metastasis, EPE (HR 2.33, P  = 0.047), SVI (HR 13.08, P  < 0.001) and NCCN high-risk (HR 2.78, P  = 0.026) were independent risk factors. Depending on MRI group, BCR-free survival significantly decreased in NCCN intermediate-risk ( P  = 0.001) and high-risk ( P  < 0.001) groups, and metastasis-free survival decreased in the intermediate-risk group ( P  = 0.39) and significantly decreased in the high-risk ( P  < 0.001) group. Objective: We intended to investigate the relationships between visual sensory impairment (VSI) or auditory sensory impairment (ASI) and brain pathological changes associated with cognitive decline in older adults., Methods: We primarily tried to examine whether each sensory impairment is related to Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology, specifically beta-amyloid (Aβ) deposition, through both cross-sectional and longitudinal approaches in cognitively unimpaired older adults. Self-report questionnaires on vision and hearing status were administered at the baseline. Neuroimaging scans including brain [ 11 C] Pittsburgh Compound B PET and MRI, as well as clinical assessments, were performed at baseline and 2-year follow-up., Results: Cross-sectional analyses showed that the VSI-positive group had significantly higher Aβ deposition than the VSI-negative group, whereas there was no significant association between ASI positivity and Aβ deposition. Longitudinal analyses revealed that VSI positivity at baseline was significantly associated with increased Aβ deposition over 2 years (β = 0.153, p = 0.025), although ASI positivity was not (β = 0.045, p = 0.518). VSI positivity at baseline was also significantly associated with greater atrophic changes in AD-related brain regions over the 2-year follow-up period (β = -0.207, p = 0.005), whereas ASI positivity was not (β = 0.024, p = 0.753). Neither VSI nor ASI positivity was related to cerebrovascular injury, as measured based on the white matter hyperintensity volume., Conclusion: The findings suggest that VSI is probably related to AD-specific pathological changes, which possibly mediate the reported relationship between VSI and cognitive decline. In contrast, ASI appears not associated with AD pathologies but may contribute to cognitive decline via other mechanisms.

Objective: Previous studies have reported that vitamin D deficiency increased the risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD) dementia in older adults. However, little is known about how vitamin D is involved in the pathophysiology of AD. Thus, this study aimed to examine the association and interaction of serum vitamin D levels with in vivo AD pathologies including cerebral beta-amyloid (Aβ) deposition and neurodegeneration in nondemented older adults., Methods: 428 Nondemented older adults were recruited from the Korean Brain Aging Study for the Early Diagnosis and Prediction of Alzheimer's Disease, a prospective cohort that began in 2014. All participants underwent comprehensive clinical assessments, measurement of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D), and multimodal brain imaging including Pittsburgh compound B (PiB) positron emission tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. Global PiB deposition was measured for the Aβ biomarker. Intracranial volume-adjusted hippocampal volume (HVa) was used as a neurodegeneration biomarker., Results: Overall, serum 25(OH)D level was not associated with either Aβ deposition or HVa after controlling for age, sex, apolipoprotein E ε4 positivity, and vascular risk factors. However, serum 25(OH)D level had a significant moderating effect on the association between Aβ and neurodegeneration, with lower serum 25(OH)D level significantly exacerbating cerebral Aβ-associated hippocampal volume loss (B = 34.612, p = 0.008)., Conclusion: Our findings indicate that lower serum vitamin D levels may contribute to AD by exacerbating Aβ-associated neurodegeneration in nondemented older adults. Further studies to explore the potential therapeutic effect of vitamin D supplementation on the progression of AD pathology will be necessary.

Background: To evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of Monofix ® -PDO compared to V-Loc™ for tumor bed suturing during robotic-assisted laparoscopic partial nephrectomy (RAPN)., Methods: A randomized, controlled, multicenter, single-blinded trial was conducted across four tertiary institutions. Patients with T1-2 stage renal masses scheduled for RAPN were enrolled. The exclusion criteria included patients not deemed in need of bed suturing, those with a history of prior chemotherapy or immunotherapy, and those with severe systemic diseases or high bleeding tendencies. A total of 174 patients participated and were subjected to permuted block randomization (T1a vs. others), resulting in 88 patients in the V-Loc™ group and 86 in the Monofix ® -PDO group. The primary outcome was the resection bed suture time. The secondary outcomes were total suture use time, warm ischemia time, console time (for efficacy), estimated blood loss, hemoglobin change, and 90-day treatment-related adverse events (for safety). All patients were scheduled for follow-up visits for up to three months postoperatively., Results: The primary outcome, resection bed suture time, did not significantly differ between the V-Loc™ and Monofix ® -PDO groups (4.8 ± 2.6 vs. 4.5 ± 2.6 min, p = 0.531). Secondary outcomes, including total suture used time (5.3 ± 2.8 vs. 4.8 ± 2.6 min, p = 0.289) and warm ischemic time (15.6 ± 5.5 vs. 15.4 ± 5.4 min, p = 0.834), were comparable between the two groups. In terms of safety outcomes, changes in serum hemoglobin levels did not show significant differences on postoperative days 1, 3, and 14 (P = 0.537, 0.353, and 0.840, respectively). No device-related adverse events were observed during the 90-day follow-up period in either group., Conclusions: Monofix ® -PDO demonstrated non-inferior to V-Loc in terms of both safety and efficacy in patients undergoing RAPN. Background: Homestay accommodations aim to support a smoother transition for refugees; yet, the intricate nature of relationships between refugees and their hosting families can make this process complex, which, in turn, can affect their health and well-being. It is crucial to grasp the experiences of both refugees and their host families in order to foster effective settlement, integration, and well-being., Objective: The purpose of this scoping review is to explore the dynamics of homestay or hosting with a focus on understanding the experiences of both refugees and their hosting families to identify gaps in the literature and propose directions for future research., Methods: We used the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology and followed the PRISMA-ScR (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews) checklist to guide this scoping review. Interaction analysis using linear regression is widely employed in psychology and related fields, yet it often induces confusion among applied researchers and students. This paper aims to address this confusion by developing intuitive visual explanations based on causal graphs. By leveraging causal graphs with distinct interaction nodes, we provide clear insights into interpreting main effects in the presence of interaction, the rationale behind centering to reduce multicollinearity, and other pertinent topics. Fluazinam, a fungicide widely used in agriculture and turf management, was traditionally thought to pose a low risk of resistance. However, our in vitro sensitivity test conducted in 2021 revealed reduced sensitivity to fluazinam in dollar spot, highlighting the need for more vigilant field monitoring. In 2022 and 2023, we evaluated the field responses of four Clarireedia jacksonii isolates with varying in vitro sensitivity to fluazinam. Fluazinam was used at both a full labeled rate (0.5 oz/1,000 ft 2 ) and a half-rate (0.25 oz/1,000 ft 2 ) to evaluate the effectiveness in isolate-inoculated plots in the field. In 2022, both natural and sensitive isolates showed significantly better control compared to insensitive isolates under both half- and full-rate treatments. However, in 2023, half-rate fluazinam demonstrated limited control under high disease pressure, providing relative disease control of dollar spot less than 45% across all treatments. In contrast, full-rate fluazinam maintained significantly better control of natural and sensitive isolates compared with insensitive isolates. Our results, showing that in vitro insensitivity leads to field insensitivity under inoculated conditions, suggest the development of fluazinam insensitivity in the C. jacksonii population. This highlights the need for judicious use of fluazinam and the establishment of continuous resistance monitoring. The potential influence of circadian rhythm, seasonal variations, and alterations in meteorological parameters has been studied across various vascular events. However, there is a lack of evidence on the potential chronobiological impacts on thromboembolic events related to the most common peripheral aneurysm, the popliteal artery aneurysm (PAA). Data was obtained from a German PAA registry and the German Meteorological Service (Deutscher Wetterdienst). In this observational cohort study seasonality and chronobiology as well as associations with meteorological parameters of symptomatic PAA were investigated. In a multivariate logistic regression analysis, it was further analyzed whether meteorological parameters could distinguish asymptomatic from symptomatic patients in the registry. Of 1200 registered PAA, n  = 142 PAA presented with acute limb ischemia between February 2011 and September 2022. More symptomatic patients (57.0%) presented to the hospital between January and June than in the second half of the year with a nadir in the fall season. Symptom onset was predominantly in the morning hours (39.5%). Atmospheric pressure and humidity values from the index dates diverged from a normal distribution showing a bimodal ("double-peak") configuration. Most patients developed symptoms after a reduction in temperatures compared to 1 or 2 d prior to the index date. However, we found evidence for an interaction between age and temperature difference, where the effects of a decreasing temperature fade with increasing age. Facing the complexity of individual-environment interactions, further investigations are needed to determine whether meteorological parameters are true risk modifiers or surrogates for seasonal differences and altered behaviors.

Ferroelectric (FE) materials are key to advancing electronic devices owing to their non-volatile properties, rapid state-switching abilities, and low-energy consumption. FE-based devices are used in logic circuits, memory-storage devices, sensors, and in-memory computing. However, the primary challenge in advancing the practical applications of FE-based memory is its reliability. To address this problem, a novel polarization pruning (PP) method is proposed. The PP is designed to eliminate weakly polarized domains by applying an opposite-sign pulse immediately after a program or erase operation. Significant improvements in the reliability of ferroelectric devices are achieved by reducing the depolarization caused by weakly polarized domains and mitigating the fluctuations in the ferroelectric dipole. These enhancements include a 25% improvement in retention, a 50% reduction in read noise, a 45% decrease in threshold voltage variation, and a 72% improvement in linearity. The purpose of this study is to evaluate Lactobacillus paracasei SMB092 as a prophylactic agent for oral pathogens. We examined the physical interaction of SMB092 with a host by identifying the presence of mucus-binding (MuB) protein domains and the capacity of the mucin binding. We determined the role of heat-killed SMB092 in host oral immunity by quantifying the mRNA levels of β-defensins (BDs), Toll-like receptors (TLRs), and their cofactors (CD14/CD36) in normal human oral keratinocytes (HOK-16B cells). To assess the clinically relevant oral health effects of heat-killed SMB092, the growth of Porphyromonas (P.) gingivalis and the production of a volatile sulfur compound (H 2 S) were also measured in the filtered condition media (FCM) obtained from its cultures with HOK-16B cells. SMB092 possessed 14 putative MuB protein domains and was attached to mucin. Significant amounts of hBD1/2 and TLR2/6 were expressed in heat-killed SMB092-treated HOK-16B cells. The specific neutralization of TLR2 attenuated the expression of hBD1/2 and CD14/CD36. The FCM inhibited the growth of P. gingivalis and the production of H 2 S. Our data indicate that heat-killed SMB092 may contribute to a healthy oral microbiome as an immune stimulant in the production of BDs via the activation of the TLR2/6 signaling pathway.

Background: Adequate postoperative pain management after cesarean section is important for the prognosis of both mother and infant. However, excessive prescription of opioid analgesics has become a concern. This study evaluated the efficacy of local continuous subfascial infusion of ropivacaine in relieving postoperative pain and reducing opioid requirements in postpartum women with cesarean section., Methods: Seventy eligible women undergoing cesarean section were randomly allocated to the ropivacaine and the normal saline group for continuous subfascial wound infiltration. All patients received additional fentanyl through an intravenous patient-controlled analgesia pump. Pain score using the visual analog scale, opioid consumption through pump, and requirements for other analgesics were postoperatively measured within 8 h, 1 day, and 2 days after surgery. Statistical analysis was performed with independent t-tests for continuous variables and Chi-square tests for categorical variables. Paired Wilcoxon and student's t-tests were used for paired samples., Results: Sixty-nine patients (35 in the study and 34 in the control group) were analyzed. The mean VAS scores were lower in the study group all three periods, with significance achieved at day 2 (2.74 ± 0.95 versus 3.41 ± 1.33, p  = 0.028). The intravenous fentanyl consumptions were significantly lower in the study group at all three periods. High entropy alloys and amorphous metallic alloys represent two distinct classes of advanced alloy materials, each with unique structural characteristics. Their emergence has garnered considerable interest across the materials science and engineering communities, driven by their promising properties, including exceptional strength. However, their extensive compositional diversity poses substantial challenges for systematic exploration, as traditional experimental approaches and high-throughput calculations struggle to efficiently navigate this vast space. While the recent development in data-driven materials discovery could potentially help, such efforts are hindered by the scarcity of comprehensive data and the lack of robust predictive tools that can effectively link alloy composition with specific properties. To address these challenges, we have deployed a machine-learning-based workflow for feature selection and statistical analysis to afford predictive models that accelerate the data-driven discovery and optimization of these advanced materials. Our methodology is validated through two case studies: (i) a regression analysis of the bulk modulus, and (ii) a classification analysis based on glass-forming ability. The Bayesian-optimized regression model trained for the prediction of bulk modulus achieved an R 2 of 0.969, an mean absolute error (MAE) of 3.958 GPa, and an root mean square error (RMSE) of 5.411 GPa, while our classification model for predicting glass-forming ability achieved an F1-score of 0.91, an area-under-the-curve of the receiver-operating-characteristic curve of 0.98, and an accuracy of 0.91. Furthermore, by leveraging a wide array of chemical data from diverse literature sources, we have successfully predicted a broad range of properties. This success underscores the efficacy of our modeling approach and emphasizes the importance of a comprehensive feature analysis and judicious feature selection strategy over a mere reliance on complex modeling techniques.

In the quest for advanced superconducting materials, the accurate prediction of critical temperatures ( T c ) poses a formidable challenge, largely due to the complex interdependencies between superconducting properties and the chemical and structural characteristics of a given material. To address this challenges, we have developed a machine-learning framework that aims to elucidate these complicated and hitherto poorly understood structure-property and property-property relationships. This study introduces a novel machine-learning-based workflow, termed the Gradient Boosted Feature Selection (GBFS), which has been tailored to predict T c for superconductors by employing a distributed gradient-boosting framework. This approach integrates exploratory data analyses, statistical evaluations, and multicollinearity reduction techniques to select highly relevant features from a high-dimensional feature space, derived solely from the chemical composition of materials. Our methodology was rigorously tested on a data set comprising approximately 16,400 chemical compounds with around 12,000 unique chemical compositions. The GBFS workflow enabled the development of a classification model that distinguishes compositions likely to exhibit T c values greater than 10 K. This model achieved a weighted average F1-score of 0.912, an AUC-ROC of 0.986, and an average precision score of 0.919. Additionally, the GBFS workflow underpinned a regression model that predicted T c values with an R 2 of 0.945, an MAE of 3.54 K, and an RMSE of 6.57 K on a test set obtained via random splitting. Further exploration was conducted through out-of-sample T c predictions, particularly those exceeding the liquid nitrogen temperature, and out-of-distribution predictions for (Ca 1- x La x )FeAs 2 based on varying lanthanum content. The outcome of our study underscores the significance of systematic feature analysis and selection in enhancing predictive model performance, offering various advantages over models that rely primarily on algorithmic complexity. This research not only advances the field of superconductivity but also sets a precedent for the application of machine learning in materials science.

Background: Breast cancer (BC) is the most common malignancy in women. Immunotherapy has revolutionized treatment options in many malignancies, and the introduction of immune checkpoint inhibition yielded beneficial results also in BC. However, many BC patients are ineligible for this T cell-based therapy, others do not respond or only briefly. Thus, there remains a high medical need for new therapies, particularly for triple-negative BC. CD276 (B7-H3) is overexpressed in several tumors on both tumor cells and tumor vessels, constituting a promising target for immunotherapy., Methods: We analyzed tumor samples of 25 patients using immunohistochemistry to assess CD276 levels. The potential of CC-3, a novel bispecific CD276xCD3 antibody, for BC treatment was evaluated using various functional in vitro assays., Results: Pronounced expression of CD276 was observed in all analyzed tumor samples including triple negative BC. In analyses with BC cells, CC-3 induced profound T cell activation, proliferation, and T cell memory subset formation. Moreover, treatment with CC-3 induced cytokine secretion and potent tumor cell lysis., Conclusion: Our findings characterize CD276 as promising target and preclinically document the therapeutic potential of CC-3 for BC treatment, providing a strong rationale for evaluation of CC-3 in BC patients in a clinical trial for which the recruitment has recently started., (© 2024. Objective: Cranial abnormalities are common birth defects that frequently alter skull shape and appearance. Despite their prevalence, objective quantification of defect severity pre- and posttreatment is limited. The authors evaluated the ability of MirrorMe3D, a novel 3D mobile iPhone application, to measure changes in the contour of the skull for patients undergoing contouring of a calcified cephalohematoma., Methods: The heads of two 20-month-old patients with disfiguring right parietal cephalohematomas undergoing a skull recontouring operation were scanned pre- and postsurgery. Four scans of the cranial abnormality were taken throughout the procedure and intraoperative 3D models were generated. Models of the head were overlapped pre- and postsurgery and compared using a depth analyzer built into MirrorMe3D., Results: Depth analysis revealed 6.0-mm and 9.9-mm differences for patients 1 and 2, respectively. Volume analysis revealed 33-cm3 and 85-cm3 differences for patients 1 and 2, respectively. Currently, no standard for quantitative measurement of the surgical outcomes of a skull reconstruction procedure exists., Conclusions: MirrorMe3D provides an efficient method for monitoring patients with simple topographic scans that create accurate models of the head. The authors show the app's ability to capture the severity of a calcified cephalohematoma and quantify the changes in the contour of the skull before and after surgery.

Background: Skin tone assessment is critical in both cosmetic and medical fields, yet traditional methods like the individual typology angle (ITA) have limitations, such as sensitivity to illuminants and insensitivity to skin redness., Methods: This study introduces an automated image-based method for skin tone mapping by applying optical approaches and deep learning. The method generates skin tone maps by leveraging the illuminant spectrum, segments the skin region from face images, and identifies the corresponding skin tone on the map. The method was evaluated by generating skin tone maps under three standard illuminants (D45, D65, and D85) and comparing the results with those obtained using ITA on skin tone simulation images., Results: The results showed that skin tone maps generated under the same lighting conditions as the image acquisition (D65) provided the highest accuracy, with a color difference of around 6, which is more than twice as small as those observed under other illuminants. The mapping positions also demonstrated a clear correlation with pigment levels. Compared to ITA, the proposed approach was particularly effective in distinguishing skin tones related to redness., Conclusion: Despite the need to measure the illuminant spectrum and for further physiological validation, the proposed approach shows potential for enhancing skin tone assessment. Recently, Clarireedia jacksonii has emerged as a significant pathogen threatening turfgrass, and its escalating resistance to multiple drugs often undermines field interventions. This study highlighted the critical role of the fungus-specific transcription factor CjXDR1 (formerly ShXDR1) in regulating multidrug resistance (MDR) in C. jacksonii . This was demonstrated through experiments involving CjXDR1-knockout and CjXDR1-complemented strains. Our sequence analysis revealed five mutations in CjXDR1: G445D, K453E, S607F, D676H, and V690A. All five gain-of-function (GOF) mutations were confirmed to directly contribute to MDR against three different classes of fungicides (propiconazole: demethylation inhibitor, boscalid: succinate dehydrogenase inhibitor, and iprodione: dicarboximide) using the genetic transformation system and in vitro fungicide-sensitivity assay. Comparative transcriptome analysis revealed that CjXDR1 and its GOF mutations led to the overexpression of downstream genes encoding a Phase I metabolizing enzyme ( CYP68 ) and two Phase III transporters ( CjPDR1 and CjAtrD ) previously reported. Knockout mutants of CYP68, CjPDR1, CjAtrD, and double-knockout mutants of CjPDR1 and CjAtrD exhibited increased sensitivity to all three fungicides tested. Among these, the CYP68-knockout mutants displayed the highest sensitivity to propiconazole, while the CjPDR1 knockout mutant exhibited significantly increased sensitivity to all three fungicides. Double-knockout mutants of CjPDR1 and CjAtrD displayed greater sensitivity than the single knockouts. In conclusion, multiple GOF mutants in CjXDR1 contribute to MDR by upregulating the expression of CjPDR1 , CjAtrD , and CYP68 . This study enhances our understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying MDR in plant pathogenic fungi, providing valuable insights into GOF mutation structures and advancing the development of antifungal drugs.

Background: The aim of this study was to determine whether inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is associated with the risk of developing prostate cancer (PCa) through a population-based study., Materials and Methods: Male patients aged ≥40 years, diagnosed with IBD from 2010 to 2013 and without IBD were identified and followed-up till 2019. A matched cohort of male patients with and without IBD in a ratio of 1:4 was created based on age, income level, and Charlson comorbidity index. Multivariate Cox regression analysis was conducted to evaluate the association of IBD with the prescence of PCa and PCa requiring definitive treatment within 1 year of diagnosis. The hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were stratified by Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis (UC), and subtypes., Results: After matching, 15,751 IBD patients and 62,346 controls were analyzed. Over a median follow-up period of 96 months, the HR for PCa was significantly increased in patients with IBD (HR: 2.44; 95% CI: 2.08-2.86, P  < 0.001). IBD was also associated with PCa requiring definitive treatment within 1 year (HR: 2.67; 95% CI: 2.09-3.42, P  < 0.001). In subgroup analysis, UC (HR: 2.83; 95% CI: 2.18-3.69, P  < 0.001) showed higher risk of PCa requiring definitive treatment than for Crohn's disease (HR: 2.21; 95% CI: 1.43-3.43, P  = 0.0004). All-cause death in patient-diagnosed PCa was the highest in UC of pancolitis (HR: 2.26; 95% CI: 0.99-5.16, P  = 0.054), and the lowest in ulcerative proctitis (HR: 0.35; 95% CI: 0.21-0.60, P  = 0.0001)., Conclusion: IBD was associated with an increased incidence of PCa in our matched analysis., Competing Interests: This study was conducted in the absence of commercial or financial relationships that could be interpreted as potential conflicts of interest. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder associated with behavioral and cognitive impairments. Unfortunately, the drugs the Food and Drug Administration currently approved for AD have shown low effectiveness in delaying the progression of the disease. The focus has shifted to non-pharmacological interventions (NPIs) because of the challenges associated with pharmacological treatments for AD. One such intervention is environmental enrichment (EE), which has been reported to restore cognitive decline associated with AD effectively. However, the therapeutic mechanisms by which EE improves symptoms associated with AD remain unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to reveal the mechanisms underlying the alleviating effects of EE on AD symptoms using histological, proteomic, and neurotransmitter-related analyses. Wild-type (WT) and 5XFAD mice were maintained in standard housing or EE conditions for 4 weeks. First, we confirmed the mitigating effects of EE on cognitive impairment in an AD animal model. Then, histological analysis revealed that EE reduced Aβ accumulation, neuroinflammation, neuronal death, and synaptic loss in the AD brain. Moreover, proteomic analysis by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry showed that EE enhanced synapse- and neurotransmitter-related networks and upregulated synapse- and neurotransmitter-related proteins in the AD brain. Furthermore, neurotransmitter-related analyses showed an increase in acetylcholine and serotonin concentrations as well as a decrease in polyamine concentration in the frontal cortex and hippocampus of 5XFAD mice raised under EE conditions. Our findings demonstrate that EE restores cognitive impairment by alleviating AD pathology and regulating synapse-related proteins and neurotransmitters. Dollar spot, a highly destructive turfgrasses disease worldwide, is caused by multiple species within the genus Clarireedia. Previous research indicated varying sensitivity to boscalid among Clarireedia populations not historically exposed to succinate dehydrogenase inhibitors (SDHIs). This study confirms that the differential sensitivity pattern is inherent among different Clarireedia spp., utilizing a combination of phylogenetic analyses, in vitro cross-resistance assays, and genetic transformation of target genes with different mutations. Furthermore, greenhouse inoculation experiments revealed that the differential boscalid sensitivity did not lead to pathogenicity issues or fitness penalties, thereby not resulting in control failure by boscalid. Background: Chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP) is a rare disease, and the potential risk of cancer in patients with CIDP remains an important concern during treatment. However, a comprehensive epidemiological study examining this association is yet to be conducted. This study aimed to investigate the incidence of cancer in patients with CIDP in South Korea using data from the Korean Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service (HIRA) database., Methods: Data from the HIRA database between January 2016 and June 2021 were analyzed. The actual incidence of cancer in patients with CIDP was compared with the expected incidence based on the general population statistics in South Korea, with adjustments for age., Results: In total, 888 patients with CIDP were included in the analysis, of whom 50 (5.63% of malignancy incidence) were newly diagnosed with cancer during the study period. Among the patients with CIDP diagnosed with cancer, 32 (64.00%) were aged 60 years or older, and 36 (72.00%) were male. The observed number of cancer diagnoses corresponded to an incidence rate of 5.63%, with a standardized incidence ratio (SIR) of 2.83 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.89-4.39) compared to the expected cancer incidence rate of 2.00%. Notably, the SIR for malignancies of lymphoid, hematopoietic, and related tissues, excluding malignant immunoproliferative diseases, multiple myeloma, and plasma cell neoplasms (C81-96, except C88 and C90), was the highest at 8.51 (95% CI: 4.18-19.83)., Conclusion: Our study shows a potential association between CIDP and an increased risk of hematological malignancies, which is consistent with previous investigations. This study aims to enhance breast cancer detection accuracy through an AI-driven ultrasound tool, Vis-BUS, developed by Barreleye Inc., Seoul, South Korea. Vis-BUS incorporates Lesion Detection AI (LD-AI) and Lesion Analysis AI (LA-AI), along with a Cancer Probability Score (CPS), to differentiate between benign and malignant breast lesions. A retrospective analysis was conducted on 258 breast ultrasound examinations to evaluate Vis-BUS's performance. The primary methods included the application of LD-AI and LA-AI to b-mode ultrasound images and the generation of CPS for each lesion. Diagnostic accuracy was assessed using metrics such as the Area Under the Receiver Operating Characteristic curve (AUROC) and the Area Under the Precision-Recall curve (AUPRC). The study found that Vis-BUS achieved high diagnostic accuracy, with an AUROC of 0.964 and an AUPRC of 0.967, indicating its effectiveness in distinguishing between benign and malignant lesions. Logistic regression analysis identified that 'Fatty' lesion density had an extremely high odds ratio (OR) of 27.7781, suggesting potential convergence issues. The 'Unknown' density category had an OR of 0.3185, indicating a lower likelihood of correct classification. Medium and large lesion sizes were associated with lower likelihoods of correct classification, with ORs of 0.7891 and 0.8014, respectively. The presence of microcalcifications showed an OR of 1.360. Among Breast Imaging-Reporting and Data System categories, category C5 had a significantly higher OR of 10.173, reflecting a higher likelihood of correct classification. Vis-BUS significantly improves diagnostic precision and supports clinical decision-making in breast cancer screening. However, further refinement is needed in areas like lesion density characterization and calcification detection to optimize its performance.

Room-temperature ferromagnets are high-value targets for discovery given the ease by which they could be embedded within magnetic devices. However, the multitude of potential interactions among magnetic ions and their surrounding environments renders the prediction of thermally stable magnetic properties challenging. Therefore, it is vital to explore methods that can effectively screen potential candidates to expedite the discovery of novel ferromagnetic materials within highly intricate feature spaces. To this end, we explore machine-learning (ML) methods as a means to predict the Curie temperature ( T c ) of ferromagnetic materials by discerning patterns within materials databases. This study emphasizes the importance of feature analysis and selection in ML modeling and demonstrates the efficacy of our gradient-boosted statistical feature-selection workflow for training predictive models. The models are fine-tuned through Bayesian optimization, using features derived solely from the chemical compositions of the materials data, before the model predictions are evaluated against literature values. We have collated ca. 35,000 T c values and the performance of our workflow is benchmarked against state-of-the-art algorithms, the results of which demonstrate that our methodology is superior to the majority of alternative methods. In a 10-fold cross-validation, our regression model realized an R 2 of (0.92 ± 0.01), an MAE of (40.8 ± 1.9) K, and an RMSE of (80.0 ± 5.0) K. We demonstrate the utility of our ML model through case studies that forecast T c values for rare-earth intermetallic compounds and generate magnetic phase diagrams for various chemical systems. These case studies highlight the importance of a systematic approach to feature analysis and selection in enhancing both the predictive capability and interpretability of ML models, while being devoid of potential human bias. They demonstrate the advantages of such an approach over a mere reliance on algorithmic complexity and a black-box treatment in ML-based modeling within the domain of computational materials science.

Background: Deep learning in dermatology presents promising tools for automated diagnosis but faces challenges, including labor-intensive ground truth preparation and a primary focus on visually identifiable features. Spectrum-based approaches offer professional-level information like pigment distribution maps, but encounter practical limitations such as complex system requirements., Methods: This study introduces a spectrum-based framework for training a deep learning model to generate melanin and hemoglobin distribution maps from skin images. This approach eliminates the need for manually prepared ground truth by synthesizing output maps into skin images for regression analysis. The framework is applied to acquire spectral data, create pigment distribution maps, and simulate pigment variations., Results: Our model generated reflectance spectra and spectral images that accurately reflect pigment absorption properties, outperforming spectral upsampling methods. It produced pigment distribution maps with correlation coefficients of 0.913 for melanin and 0.941 for hemoglobin compared to the VISIA system. Additionally, the model's simulated images of pigment variations exhibited a proportional correlation with adjustments made to pigment levels. These evaluations are based on pigment absorption properties, the Individual Typology Angle (ITA), and pigment indices., Conclusion: The model produces pigment distribution maps comparable to those from specialized clinical equipment and simulated images with numerically adjusted pigment variations. Cross-polarized images are beneficial for skin pigment analysis due to the enhanced visualization of melanin and hemoglobin regions. However, the required imaging equipment can be bulky and optically complex. Additionally, preparing ground truths for training pigment analysis models is labor-intensive. This study aims to introduce an integrated approach for generating cross-polarized images and creating skin melanin and hemoglobin maps without the need for ground truth preparation for pigment distributions. We propose a two-component approach: a cross-polarized image generation module and a skin analysis module. Three generative adversarial networks (CycleGAN, pix2pix, and pix2pixHD) are compared for creating cross-polarized images. The regression analysis network for skin analysis is trained with theoretically reconstructed ground truths based on the optical properties of pigments. The methodology is evaluated using the VISIA VAESTRO clinical system. The cross-polarized image generation module achieved a peak signal-to-noise ratio of 35.514 dB. The skin analysis module demonstrated correlation coefficients of 0.942 for hemoglobin and 0.922 for melanin. The integrated approach yielded correlation coefficients of 0.923 for hemoglobin and 0.897 for melanin, respectively. Background: Altered thyroid hormone levels have been associated with increased risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD) dementia and related cognitive decline. However, the neuropathological substrates underlying the link between thyroid hormones and AD dementia are not yet fully understood. We first investigated the association between serum thyroid hormone levels and in vivo AD pathologies including both beta-amyloid (Aβ) and tau deposition measured by positron emission tomography (PET). Given the well-known relationship between Aβ and tau pathology in AD, we additionally examined the moderating effects of thyroid hormone levels on the association between Aβ and tau deposition., Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted as part of the Korean Brain Aging Study for Early Diagnosis and Prediction of Alzheimer's Disease (KBASE) cohort. This study included a total of 291 cognitively normal adults aged 55 to 90. All participants received comprehensive clinical assessments, measurements for serum total triiodothyronine (T3), free triiodothyronine (fT3), free thyroxine (fT4), and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), and brain imaging evaluations including [ 11 C]-Pittsburgh compound B (PiB)- PET and [ 18 F] AV-1451 PET., Results: No associations were found between either thyroid hormones or TSH and Aβ and tau deposition on PET. However, fT4 (p = 0.002) and fT3 (p = 0.001) exhibited significant interactions with Aβ on tau deposition: The sensitivity analyses conducted after the removal of an outlier showed that the interaction effect between fT4 and Aβ deposition was not significant, whereas the interaction between fT3 and Aβ deposition remained significant. However, further subgroup analyses demonstrated a more pronounced positive relationship between Aβ and tau in both the higher fT4 and fT3 groups compared to the lower group, irrespective of outlier removal. Meanwhile, neither T3 nor TSH had any interaction with Aβ on tau deposition., Conclusion: Our findings suggest that serum thyroid hormones may moderate the relationship between cerebral Aβ and tau pathology. Higher levels of serum thyroid hormones could potentially accelerate the Aβ-dependent tau deposition in the brain. The demand for gas sensing systems that enable fast and precise gas recognition is growing rapidly. However, substantial challenges arise from the complex fabrication process of sensor arrays, time-consuming data transmission to an external processor, and high energy consumption in multi-stage data processing. In this study, a gas sensing system using on-chip annealing for fast and power-efficient gas detection is proposed. By utilizing a micro-heater embedded in the gas sensor, the sensing material of adjacent sensors in the same substrate can be easily varied without further fabrication steps. The response to oxidizing gas is constrained in metal oxide (MOX) sensing material with small grain sizes, as the depletion width of grain cannot extend beyond the grain size during the gas reaction. On the other hand, the response to reducing gases and humidity, which decrease the depletion width, is less affected by grain sizes. A readout circuit integrating a differential amplifier and dual FET-type gas sensors effectively emphasizes the response to oxidizing gases by canceling the response to reducing gases and humidity. The selective on-chip annealing method is applicable to various MOX sensing materials, demonstrating its potential for application in commercial fields due to its simplicity and expandability., (© 2024 The Authors. Xkin closure is a newly developed medical suture device for lacerations and surgical wounds that can reduce scarring, pain and the risk of infection compared with conventional sutures or staplers. A randomized controlled study was performed to compare the wound healing effects and complications of Xkin closure with stapler closure. Fifty patients who underwent robot-assisted radical prostatectomy for prostate cancer were randomly assigned. Only the wound above the navel, which was extended to take out the prostate was targeted. The wound was examined at 2, 6 and 12 weeks after surgery, and the modified Vancouver Scar Scale (mVSS), scar height and side effects were assessed with a 3D skin analyser. Forty-six patients (23 Xkin, 23 Stapler) were analysed. The mVSS scores, vascularity and pliability were significantly lower in the Xkin group compared with the stapler group at the 12-week follow-up. No significant differences in the maximum peak and depth of the scars were detected between the two groups using 3D photographs at 12 weeks. Xkin is an effective wound closure method for improving scar outcomes. Smart healthcare systems integrated with advanced deep neural networks enable real-time health monitoring, early disease detection, and personalized treatment. In this work, a novel 3D AND-type flash memory array with a rounded double channel for computing-in-memory (CIM) architecture to overcome the limitations of conventional smart healthcare systems: the necessity of high area and energy efficiency while maintaining high classification accuracy is proposed. The fabricated array, characterized by low-power operations and high scalability with double independent channels per floor, exhibits enhanced cell density and energy efficiency while effectively emulating the features of biological synapses. The CIM architecture leveraging the fabricated array achieves high classification accuracy (93.5%) for electrocardiogram signals, ensuring timely detection of potentially life-threatening arrhythmias. Incorporated with a simplified spike-timing-dependent plasticity learning rule, the CIM architecture is suitable for robust, area- and energy-efficient in-memory arrhythmia detection systems. Background: Popliteal artery aneurysms (PAAs) are the most common peripheral aneurysm. However, due to its rarity, the cumulative body of evidence regarding patient patterns, treatment strategies, and perioperative outcomes is limited. This analysis aims to investigate distinct phenotypical patient profiles and associated treatment and outcomes in patients with a PAA by performing an unsupervised clustering analysis of the POPART (Practice of Popliteal Artery Aneurysm Repair and Therapy) registry., Methods and Results: A cluster analysis (using k-means clustering) was performed on data obtained from the multicenter POPART registry (42 centers from Germany and Luxembourg). Sensitivity analyses were conducted to explore validity and stability. Using 2 clusters, patients were primarily separated by the absence or presence of clinical symptoms. Within the cluster of symptomatic patients, the main difference between patients with acute limb ischemia presentation and nonemergency symptomatic patients was PAA diameter. When using 6 clusters, patients were primarily grouped by comorbidities, with patients with acute limb ischemia forming a separate cluster. Despite markedly different risk profiles, perioperative complication rates appeared to be positively associated with the proportion of emergency patients. However, clusters with a higher proportion of patients having any symptoms before treatment experienced a lower rate of perioperative complications., Conclusions: The conducted analyses revealed both an insight to the public health reality of PAA care as well as patients with PAA at elevated risk for adverse outcomes. This analysis suggests that the preoperative clinic is a far more crucial adjunct to the patient's preoperative risk assessment than the patient's epidemiological profile by itself.

Elucidating the energetic processes which govern photosynthesis, the engine of life on earth, are an essential goal both for fundamental research and for cutting-edge biotechnological applications. Fluorescent signal of photosynthetic markers has long been utilised in this endeavour. In this research we demonstrate the use of fluorescent noise analysis to reveal further layers of intricacy in photosynthetic energy transfer. While noise is a common tool analysing dynamics in physics and engineering, its application in biology has thus far been limited. Here, a distinct behaviour in photosynthetic pigments across various chemical and biological environments is measured. These changes seem to elucidate quantum effects governing the generation of oxidative radicals. Although our method offers insights, it is important to note that the interpretation should be further validated expertly to support as conclusive theory. This innovative method is simple, non-invasive, and immediate, making it a promising tool to uncover further, more complex energetic events in photosynthesis, with potential uses in environmental monitoring, agriculture, and food-tech., (© 2024. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), prevalent among conditions like obesity and diabetes, is globally significant. Existing ultrasound diagnosis methods, despite their use, often lack accuracy and precision, necessitating innovative solutions like AI. This study aims to validate an AI-enhanced quantitative ultrasound (QUS) algorithm for NAFLD severity assessment and compare its performance with Magnetic Resonance Imaging Proton Density Fat Fraction (MRI-PDFF), a conventional diagnostic tool. A single-center cross-sectional pilot study was conducted. Liver fat content was estimated using an AI-enhanced quantitative ultrasound attenuation coefficient (QUS-AC) of Barreleye Inc. with an AI-based QUS algorithm and two conventional ultrasound techniques, FibroTouch Ultrasound Attenuation Parameter (UAP) and Canon Attenuation Imaging (ATI). The results were compared with MRI-PDFF values. The intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was also assessed. Significant correlation was found between the QUS-AC and the MRI-PDFF, reflected by an R value of 0.95. On other hand, ATI and UAP displayed lower correlations with MRI-PDFF, yielding R values of 0.73 and 0.51, respectively. In addition, ICC for QUS-AC was 0.983 for individual observations. On the other hand, the ICCs for ATI and UAP were 0.76 and 0.39, respectively. Our findings suggest that AC with AI-enhanced QUS could serve as a valuable tool for the non-invasive diagnosis of NAFLD.
