Oenological tannins (OETs) are winemaking processing aids used to facilitate stabilization and fining, to increase the antioxidant capacity, and to promote colour stability of grape juice and wine. A wide variability of pure or mix formulates are available for winemaking purposes, including hydrolysable tannins (gallotannins and ellagitannins), proanthocyanidins from grape skins and seeds (prodelphinidins and procyanidins), and from exotic wood (prorobinetinidins and profisetinidins). In this study, seventeen OETs pure and mix formulates were characterized in terms of polyphenolic content and antioxidant capacity in a model wine and in a red wine after one-month storage, as well as aroma, astringency, and bitterness sensory characteristics in water and red wine. Colour-related features were also analysed in the added red wine after one-month storage. For the first time, correlations among the obtained results in the different matrices were investigated to understand the most suitable OETs for winemaking applications. The results showed a great variability among the formulates studied in terms of phenolic content, which was strictly correlated to their antioxidant capacity. Regarding origin, hydrolysable tannins had the highest antioxidant ability, followed by exotic wood formulates. A strong and positive correlation was found in antioxidant capacity of OETs in model wine and red wine after one-month storage, in particular for ellagitannins, which confirmed also their ability to increase pigments polymerization. By contrast, quebracho tannins resulted the bitterest and most astringent when tasted in water (0.4 g/L), although in-mouth and aromatic descriptors of OETs tasted in water were not correlated with the ones of the added red wine. Therefore, the choice of OETs formulate and its optimal dose requires a characterization in terms of polyphenolic content and antioxidant capacity because these properties were well correlated with those of the added wines in a short storage period, whereas the sensory impact at oenological range doses is mainly dependent on wine features., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier Ltd. A microclimate classification of the entire Bologna Municipality has been carried out in order to give a tool to the local administration in the drafting of the General Urbanistic Plan (PUG). The city was classified considering the variation of air temperature as a function of the surface characteristics, the vegetation fraction, the building density and the H/W ratio (height to width). Starting from the microclimate analysis carried out with fluid-dynamic modeling (Envi-met) for some areas of the city of urban interest, the air temperature variation was correlated to the physiological equivalent temperature (PET) in order to make a classification of physiological well-being for the resident population. An urban map of a normalized microclimate well-being index (BMN) has been obtained to give support when private, and public actors want to regenerate part of the city, taking into account the climate-centered approach for the development of a sustainability city.

Endoscopy represents a commonly employed technique for canine enteropathies. Different trials in human intestinal endoscopy have suggested that the introduction of water for luminal distension, in place of air, improves the visualization of the mucosal texture and decreases pain. The aim of the study was to compare water immersion (WI) vs. air insufflation (AI) during duodenoscopy in anesthetized dogs in terms of mucosal visualization and nociception. Twenty-five dogs undergoing duodenoscopy were included. The same image of the descending duodenum was recorded applying WI and AI. Each pair of images was analyzed using morphological skeletonization, an image entropy evaluation, and a subjective blind evaluation by three experienced endoscopists. To evaluate differences in nociception related to the procedure applied, heart rate and arterial blood pressure were measured before, during and after WI/AI. To compare the two methods, a t-test for paired data was applied for the image analysis, Fleiss' Kappa evaluation for the subjective evaluation and a Friedman test for anesthetic parameters. No differences were found between WI and AI using morphological skeletonization and entropy. The subjective evaluation identified the WI images as qualitatively better than the AI images, indicating substantial agreement between the operators. No differences in nociception were found. The results of the study pointed out the absence of changes in pain response between WI and AI, likely due to the sufficient control of nociception by the anesthesia. In this paper, a new semi-automatic procedure to transform three-dimensional point clouds of complex objects to three-dimensional finite element models is presented and validated. The procedure conceives of the point cloud as a stacking of point sections. The complexity of the clouds is arbitrary, since the procedure is designed for terrestrial laser scanner surveys applied to buildings with irregular geometry, such as historical buildings. The procedure aims at solving the problems connected to the generation of finite element models of these complex structures by constructing a fine discretized geometry with a reduced amount of time and ready to be used with structural analysis. If the starting clouds represent the inner and outer surfaces of the structure, the resulting finite element model will accurately capture the whole three-dimensional structure, producing a complex solid made by voxel elements. A comparison analysis with a CAD-based model is carried out on a historical building damaged by a seismic event. The results indicate that the proposed procedure is effective and obtains comparable models in a shorter time, with an increased level of automation.

The surface layer of road pavement has a particular importance in relation to the satisfaction of the primary demands of locomotion, such as security and eco-compatibility. Among those pavement surface characteristics, the "texture" appears to be one of the most interesting with regard to the attainment of skid resistance. Specifications and regulations, providing a wide range of functional indicators, act as guidelines to satisfy the performance requirements. This paper describes an experiment on the use of laser scanner techniques on various types of asphalt for texture characterization. The use of high precision laser scanners, such as the triangulation types, is proposed to expand the analysis of road pavement from the commonly and currently used two-dimensional method to a three-dimensional one, with the aim of extending the range of the most important parameters for these kinds of applications. Laser scanners can be used in an innovative way to obtain information on areal surface layer through a single measurement, with data homogeneity and representativeness. The described experience highlights how the laser scanner is used for both laboratory experiments and tests in situ, with a particular attention paid to factors that could potentially affect the survey.

The Authors consider the problems involved in dental treatment of the handicapped patients. Accuracy in diagnosis of the handicap factor, knowledge about its consequences on pathophysiological status and about chronically assumed drugs are the first step: in fact these patients may be affected by a wide variety of physiopathologic and mental diseases. Failure of cooperation requires general anesthesia or sedation techniques. General anesthesia can be dangerous (malignant hyperthermia in myopathies, difficult intubation in facial anomalies, pharmacological interactions); furthermore, its frequent application even in order to perform minimal treatment is often unsuitable. Sedation techniques offer a more convenient possibility, but must be practised by trained operators. Nitrous oxide alone rarely produces in fact a sufficient degree of sedation and is suitable only in patients affected by very slight mental insufficiency. In the other cases, association with various drugs (as benzodiazepines, barbiturates etc) is needed. In such a situation, the active and continuous presence of the anesthesiologist becomes mandatory.
