Physiologic dead space is a well-established independent predictor of death in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Here, we explore the association between a surrogate measure of dead space (DS) and early outcomes of mechanically ventilated patients admitted to Intensive Care Unit (ICU) because of COVID-19-associated ARDS. Retrospective cohort study on data derived from Italian ICUs during the first year of the COVID-19 epidemic. A competing risk Cox proportional hazard model was applied to test for the association of DS with two competing outcomes (death or discharge from the ICU) while adjusting for confounders. The final population consisted of 401 patients from seven ICUs. A significant association of DS with both death (HR 1.204; CI 1.019-1.423; p = 0.029) and discharge (HR 0.434; CI 0.414-0.456; p [Formula: see text]) was noticed even when correcting for confounding factors (age, sex, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, diabetes, PaO[Formula: see text]/FiO[Formula: see text], tidal volume, positive end-expiratory pressure, and systolic blood pressure). These results confirm the important association between DS and death or ICU discharge in mechanically ventilated patients with COVID-19-associated ARDS. Background: Social media contains an overabundance of health information relating to people living with different type of diseases. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental condition with lifelong impacts and reported trends have revealed a considerable increase in prevalence and incidence. Research had shown that the ASD community provides significant support to its members through Twitter, providing information about their values and perceptions through their use of words and emotional stance. Our purpose was to analyze all the messages posted on Twitter platform regarding ASD and analyze the topics covered within the tweets, to understand the attitude of the various people interested in the topic. In particular, we focused on the discussion of ASD and COVID-19., Methods: The data collection process was based on the search for tweets through hashtags and keywords. After bots screening, the NMF (Non-Negative Matrix Factorization) method was used for topic modeling because it produces more coherent topics compared to other solutions. Sentiment scores were calculated using AFiNN for each tweet to represent its negative to positive emotion., Results: From the 2.458.929 tweets produced in 2020, 691.582 users were extracted (188 bots which generated 59.104 tweets), while from the 2.393.236 total tweets from 2019, the number of identified users was 684.032 (230 bots which generated 50.057 tweets). The total number of COVID-ASD tweets is only a small part of the total dataset. Often, the negative sentiment identified in the sentiment analysis referred to anger towards COVID-19 and its management, while the positive sentiment reflected the necessity to provide constant support to people with ASD., Conclusions: Social media contributes to a great discussion on topics related to autism, especially with regards to focus on family, community, and therapies. The COVID-19 pandemic increased the use of social media, especially during the lockdown period. A survey was made on a population of 6059 subjects aged more than 60 years with the aim to assess 1. the prevalence of heart arrhythmias and 2. the relationships between arrhythmias and some other ecg alterations. Arrhythmias resulted present in 29.0% of the whole population with a significantly higher prevalence among males (30.7% vs 28.1%, P less than 0.05) and among subjects over 75 years of age (33.2% vs 23.9%, P less than 0.001). Supraventricular extrasystoles (SE, 11.55%), atrial fibrillation (AF, 10.44%) and ventricular extrasystoles (VE, 8.91%) were the most frequent arrhythmias, followed by sinus bradycardia (SB, 2.04%), sinus arrhythmia (SA, 1.35%), atrial flutter (AFL, 1.09%) and junctional rhythms (JR, 0.20%). AF and AFL resulted significantly more frequent among females, whilst SE, VE and SB were more frequent among males. All the above arrhythmias, with the exception of AFL and JR resulted significantly more frequent among subjects over 75. A significantly higher prevalence of ecg signs of left ventricular hypertrophy, ischemia, previous myocardial infarction (MI) and of the so-called "minor" T-wave changes (MTC) was found among the subjects with arrhythmia as compared with those free from rhythm disturbances. Ecg signs of MI and MTC were significantly more frequent among males and MTC were more frequent among females and among subjects over 75. It is concluded that in an old person the presence of an arrhythmia should lead to a careful evaluation of the general and cardiological clinical situation in order to avoid 1. to prescribe an unnecessary and potentially dangerous antiarrhythmic treatment, and 2. to misdiagnose an underlying clinical condition liable to a decisive improvement under adequate treatment.
