Background: Sleep alterations are common in college students, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. Sociodemographic factors may predict these alterations in this population., Objective: To identify the sociodemographic factors and health characteristics associated with the number of hours of sleep of college students during the COVID-19 pandemic., Methods: This was a cross-sectional study carried out with 244 university students from a multicampi public university in the State of Bahia, Northeast Brazil. Data collection was performed online and participants answered a specific questionnaire to assess sleep hours, sociodemographic and health variables., Results: Significant associations were observed between hours of sleep and older students (odds ratio adjusted -ORaj: 3.75; 95% Confidence Interval -CI: 1.81-7.75; p < 0.01), attending the final semesters (ORaj: 1.85; 95% CI: 1.05-3.25; p < 0.03), and who reported having some disease (ORaj: 2.18; 95% CI: 1.05-4.50; p < 0.03) with greater chances of getting less sleep. However, those who used tobacco (ORaj: 0.08; 95% CI: 0.01-0.45; p < 0.001) were likely to have more hours of sleep per night., Conclusion: Sleep restriction was common among participating college students, which has likely intensified due to the COVID-19 pandemic and its restrictions. This encourages specific public health actions, contemplating the health and hours of sleep of this population.

This study aimed to analyze factors associated with delay in specialized treatment after diagnosis of cervical cancer in the State of Bahia, Brazil. This was a cross-sectional hospital-based study of women treated in accredited units in the Hospital-Based Cancer Registry (HBCR) system in the State of Bahia from 2008 to 2017. A descriptive analysis and logistic regression were performed with backward stepwise modeling to estimate crude and adjusted prevalence ratios (PR), defining statistical significance as p ≤ 0.05 in Pearson's chi-square test. We analyzed 9,184 cases, and 65% had delayed treatment (time between diagnosis and first treatment > 60 days). Delayed treatment was more prevalent among women 65 years or older (PR = 1.30; 95%CI: 1.21-1.39), with no schooling (PR = 1.24; 95%CI: 1.15-1.33), and in advanced stages (PR = 1.17; 95%CI: 1.13-1.21). Most of the cases analyzed had delayed treatment, more prevalent among older women, with less schooling, and advanced tumor stages, highlighting the need to expand access to cancer treatment services in Bahia state, especially for these groups in worse conditions.

Background: The insufficient knowledge regarding the serological status of people affected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a concern in Brazil. HIV self-testing (HIVST) has been proved to have great potential for increasing testing, especially among vulnerable populations. The large-scale distribution of HIVST by the Brazilian public health system has increased in recent years. We aimed to investigate the awareness of HIVST among health care providers (HCP) from specialized HIV/AIDS care services in the state of Bahia, Northeast Brazil. Further we investigated HCP acceptability and willingness to offer its use., Methods: A cross-sectional study on HCP from 29 specialized care services (SCS) located in 21 cities in the state of Bahia. HCP working in the service for at least 6 months were included. Sociodemographic, occupational, and behavioral data were collected using a questionnaire. Descriptive statistics were carried out. Bivariate, and multivariate analyses estimating adjusted odds ratios (aOR) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) using logistic regression were conducted., Results: The awareness and acceptability of HIVST and the willingness to provide it were 79.8, 55.2, and 47.1%, respectively. Few HCP reported that the SCS where they worked dispensed HIVST (3.6%), and 13.5% received some information or training on HIVST. Factors associated with willingness to offer HIVST were: HIVST acceptability (aOR = 9.45; 95% CI: 4.53-19.71), willingness to use HIVST on themselves (aOR = 4.45; 95% CI: 1.62-12.24), confidence in offering HIVST to clients (aOR = 5.73; 95% CI: 2.26-12.72), and considering everyone eligible for HIVST (aOR = 2.88; 95% CI: 1.25-6.59)., Conclusions: Although most HCP were aware of HIVST, acceptability and willingness to provide it to the clients was moderate. The scale up of HIVST as a mean for the HIV prevention and control policy in Brazil, requires further training of HCP and better implementation of this program., (© 2022. The Author(s).)

A report on two cases of botulism, one fatal, in which disease diagnosis was difficult and collaboration between public health and epidemiological surveillance services was poor. The objective of this report is to warn professionals of the seriousness of this disease and to reflect on existing public health surveillance practices.
