Ecological integrity, encompassing physical, chemical, and biological aspects, is crucial for sustaining ecosystem service functions and stability. As the largest freshwater lake in China, the ecological integrity of Poyang Lake has attracted much attention due to the over-exploitation of its water resources in recent years. In this study, several biological and water quality surveys on water ecological conditions were carried out at 11 sampling points of Poyang Lake from 1998 to 2022, and the ecological health of Poyang Lake was evaluated by use of the O/E (Observation/Expectation) model and the chemical-biological index method according to the status of the water quality and the structure of the benthic fauna in the four seasons, respectively. The results showed that the benthic community structure is simple, and the biodiversity is low, which is mainly dominated by Insecta in Arthropoda and Oligochaeta in Oroidea, accounting for 84.3% and 42.4%, respectively; the results of the O/E index evaluated under the threshold of probability of capture ≥ 0.5 showed that the health grade of all sections was sub-healthy or average, which was consistent with the results of the chemical-biological composite index evaluation. The dual evaluation method of the O/E model and chemical-biological composite index adopted in this study integrates more than twenty years of long-time scale data; this method combined with long time scale data has not been studied before, and its advantage is that it can more objectively show the change in the ecological situation of Poyang Lake for many years. The results of the present study could provide a theoretical basis and technical support for the evaluation of lake water environment quality.

Cadmium poses a significant threat to freshwater aquatic organisms and ecosystems, making it essential to establish regional freshwater quality criteria (FWQC) in China to safeguard these organisms. The toxicity database for cadmium covered 249 acute toxicity data from 52 species (seven phyla and 27 families) and 62 chronic toxicity data from 21 species (four phyla and 12 families). During short-term exposure, Morone saxatilis displayed the most sensitivity to cadmium, whereas Daphnia magna showed the most sensitivity in long-term exposure scenarios. Significant correlations were identified between water hardness and the toxicity data for cadmium, with the acute toxicity coefficient (K ATD ) at 1.0227 (n = 52, p < 0.05) and the chronic toxicity coefficient (K CTD ) at 0.4983 (n = 21, p < 0.05). With the species sensitivity distribution method, the short-term freshwater quality criteria (S-FWQC) were derived with a normal distribution as the best fit ( R 2 0.9793), while the long-term freshwater quality criteria (L-FWQC) were calculated using a logistic distribution as the best fit ( R 2 0.9686). The formulas for the S-FWQC and L-FWQC were represented as 10(1.0227×lg(H)-1.5444) and 10(0.4983×lg(H)-1.7549), respectively, with water hardness serving as an independent variable. This study offers valuable insights for improving the management of cadmium to protect freshwater aquatic organisms in China.

Triphenyl phosphate (TPHP) and tris(1.3-dichloroisopropyl) phosphate (TDCIPP) are emerging contaminants that pervade diverse ecosystems and impair the thyroid and neural signaling pathways. The intricate interactions between thyroid and neurodevelopmental effects mediated by TPHP and TDCIPP remain elusive. This study integrates in vivo, in vitro, and in silico approaches to elucidate these mechanisms in Cyprinus carpio at varying temperatures. It showed that TPHP and TDCIPP hindered fish growth, particularly at low temperatures, by interfering with thyroid hormone synthesis and transport processes. Both compounds have been identified as environmental hormones that mimic thyroid hormone activity and potentially inhibit acetylcholinesterase, leading to neurodevelopmental disorders characterized by brain tissue damage and disrupted cholinergic synapses, such as axon guidance and regeneration. Notably, the bioaccumulation of TPHP was 881.54 % higher than that of TDCIPP, exhibiting temperature-dependent variations with higher levels of TDCIPP at low temperatures (20.50 % and 250.84 % above optimum and high temperatures, respectively), suggesting that temperature could exacerbate the toxicity effects of OPEs. This study sheds new light on the mechanisms underlying thyroid endocrine disruption and neurodevelopmental toxicity in C. carpio. Currently, chemicals and waste are recognized as key drivers of habitat degradation and biodiversity loss in aquatic ecosystems. To ensure vibrant habitats for aquatic species and maintain a sustainable aquatic food supply system, Japan promulgated its Environmental Quality Standards for the Conservation of Aquatic Life (EQS-CAL), based on its own aquatic life water quality criteria (ALWQC) derivation method and application mechanism. Here we overview Japan's EQS-CAL framework and highlight their best practices by examining the framework systems and related policies. Key experiences from Japan's EQS-CAL system include: (1) Classifying six types of aquatic organisms according to their adaptability to habitat status; (2) Using a risk-based chemical screening system for three groups of chemical pollutants; (3) Recommending a five-step method for determining ALWQC values based on the most sensitive life stage of the most sensitive species; (4) Applying site-specific implementation mechanisms through a series of Plan-Do-Check-Act loops. With increasing urbanization and rapid industrialization, more and more environmental problems have arisen. Phthalates (PAEs) are the foremost and most widespread plasticizers and are readily emitted from these manufactured products into the environment. PAEs act as endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) and can have serious impacts on aquatic organisms as well as human health. In this study, the water quality criteria (WQC) of five PAEs (dimethyl phthalate (DMP), diethyl phthalate (DEP), dibutyl phthalate (DBP), butyl benzyl phthalate (BBP) and di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP)) for freshwater aquatic organisms were developed using a species sensitivity distribution (SSD) and a toxicity percentage ranking (TPR) approach. The results showed that long-term water quality criteria (LWQC) of PAEs using the SSD method could be 13.7, 11.1, 2.8, 7.8, and 0.53 μg/L, respectively. Criteria continuous concentrations (CCC) of PAEs were derived using the TPR method and determined to be 28.4, 13.1, 1.3, 2.5, and 1.6 μg/L, respectively. The five PAEs are commonly measured in China surface waters at concentrations between ng/L and μg/L. DBP, DEHP, and di-n-octyl phthalate (DnOP) were the most frequently detected PAEs, with occurrence rates ranging from 67% to 100%. The ecological risk assessment results of PAEs showed a decreasing order of risk at the national level, DEHP, DBP, DMP, DEP, DnOP. Organophosphate esters (OPEs) have been widely used as flame retardants and plasticizers in consumer and industrial products. They have been found to have numerous exposure hazards. Recently, several OPEs have been detected in surface waters around the world, which may pose potential ecological risks to freshwater organisms. In this study, the concentration, spatial variation, and ecological risk of 15 OPEs in the Beiyun and Yongding rivers were unprecedentedly investigated by the ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) and risk quotient (RQ) method. The result showed that triethyl phosphate (TEP), tri (2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate (TCPP) were the most abundant OPEs with average concentrations of 55.53 ng/L and 42.29 ng/L, respectively. The concentrations of OPEs in the Beiyun River are higher than in the Yongding River, and their levels were higher in densely populated and industrial areas. The risk assessment showed that there was insignificant from OPEs to freshwater organisms in these rivers (RQs <0.1). The risk was higher downstream than upstream, which was related to human-intensive industrial activities downstream in the Yongding River. The ecological risk of OPEs in surface waters worldwide was estimated by joint probability curves (JPCs), and the result showed that there was a moderate risk for tri (2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP), a low risk for trimethyl phosphate (TMP), and insignificant for other OPEs. In addition, the QSAR-ICE-SSD model was used to calculate the hazardous concentration for 5% (HC 5 ). This result validated the feasibility and accuracy of this model in predicting acute data of OPEs and reducing biological experiments on the toxicity of OPEs. Due to their endocrine-disrupting effects and the risks posed in surface waters, in particular by chronic low-dose exposure to aquatic organisms, phthalate esters (PAEs) have received significant attention. However, most assessments of risks posed by PAEs were performed at a selection level, and thus limited by empirical data on toxic effects and potencies. A quantitative structure activity relationship (QSAR) and interspecies correlation estimation (ICE) model was constructed to estimate hazardous concentrations (HCs) of selected PAEs to aquatic organisms, then they were used to conduct a multiple-level environmental risk assessment for PAEs in surface waters of China. Values of hazardous concentration for 5% of species (HC 5 s), based on acute lethality, estimated by use of the QSAR-ICE model were within 1.25-fold of HC 5 values derived from empirical data on toxic potency, indicating that the QSAR-ICE model predicts the toxicity of these three PAEs with sufficient accuracy. The five selected PAEs may be commonly measured in China surface waters at concentrations between ng/L and μg/L. Risk quotients according to median concentrations of the five PAEs ranged from 3.24 for di(2-ethylhexhyl) phthalate (DEHP) to 4.10 × 10 -3 for dimethyl phthalate (DMP). DEHP and dibutyl phthalate (DBP) had risks to the most vulnerable aquatic biota, with the frequency of exceedances of the predicted no-effect concentration (PNECs) of 75.5% and 38.0%, respectively. DEHP and DBP were identified as having "high" or "moderate" risks. Results of the joint probability curves (JPC) method indicated DEHP posed "intermediate" risk to freshwater species with a maximum risk product of 5.98%. Fragrances rac- and l-menthol extracted from peppermint are widely used and considered as emerging contaminants recently, which are persistent in the environment. Menthol has always been considered as a safe chemical for humans, but its potential adverse ecological effects on aquatic organisms and the toxic mechanisms have not yet been fully understood. The present study aims to investigate the physiological response of Microcystis aeruginosa after exposure to the two menthol isomers, and to explore the toxic mechanisms and ecological risks of these two chemicals. Results showed that rac-menthol exhibited a hormesis effect on the cell growth, chlorophyll a and protein contents; while l-menthol showed an inhibition effect. Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) content increased significantly at day 3 and then decreased markedly at day 6 after exposure to the two chemicals. Compared with rac-menthol, l-menthol can cause damage to the antioxidant system and plasmalemma more severely, promote the production and release of microcystins-LR (MC-LR) more dramatically, upregulate the expression of MC-transportation-related gene mcyH, and induce higher apoptosis rates. Overall results revealed that the toxic effects of l-menthol on cyanobacteria were significantly greater than those of rac-menthol. The significant increase in the malondialdehyde (MDA) content and the ultrastructural characteristics of the cells indicated that the plasma membranes were damaged. Thus, further attention should be paid to the scientific use, ecological and environmental risk assessment of chiral menthol. Organophosphate esters (OPEs) are increasingly recognized as pervasive environmental contaminants, primarily from their extensive application in flame retardants and plasticizers. Despite their widespread presence, the intricacies of OPE bioaccumulation within aquatic ecosystems remain poorly understood, particularly the environmental determinants influencing their distribution and the bioaccumulation dynamics across aquatic food chains. Here we show that water temperature plays a crucial role in modulating the dispersion of OPE in the aquatic environment of Poyang Lake. We quantified OPE concentrations across various matrices, uncovering levels ranging from 0.198 to 912.622 ng L -1 in water, 0.013-493.36 ng per g dry weight (dw) in sediment, 0.026-41.92 ng per g wet weight (ww) in plankton, 0.13-2100.72 ng per g dw in benthic invertebrates, and 0.31-3956.49 ng per g dw in wild fish, highlighting a pronounced bioaccumulation gradient. Notably, the intestines emerged as the principal site for OPE absorption, displaying the highest concentrations among the seven tissues examined. Among the various OPEs, tris(chloroethyl) phosphate was distinguished by its significant bioaccumulation potential within the aquatic food web, suggesting a need for heightened scrutiny. The propensity for OPE accumulation was markedly higher in benthic invertebrates than wild fish, indicating a differential vulnerability within aquatic biota. Organophosphate esters (OPEs) have been used worldwide as organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) since brominated flame retardants (BFRs) were banned. Due to the toxicity of these OPEs, environmental concerns and ecological risks arose. However, there are still large gaps in the understanding of their toxicity to organisms and the mechanisms of toxicity. After collecting the existing toxicity information and obtaining molecular descriptors of OPEs, a partial least square (PLS) regression model was used in this study to quantify the structure-toxicity relationships of OPEs. Based on the regression results, the acute toxicity of the remaining OPEs lacking acute toxicity data was predicted, and the risk level of total common OPEs was classified. The acute toxicity of 15 chemicals was collected, and >1660 molecular structure descriptors were obtained. The cross-validation results of the partial least square regression indicated that two principal components met the regression requirements with the selected features, and the regression equations of these chemicals were generated with selected molecular descriptors. The influence of physicochemical properties, such as hydrophobicity/molecular weight, in traditional perception of OPE toxicity was not that obvious, and acute toxicity was mainly influenced by the autocorrelation coefficients. However, the regression results indicated that the correlation between autocorrelation coefficients calculated based on different physicochemical properties and toxicity was different. According to the prediction result based on PLS regression, CDP may pose a high risk and halogenated alkyl-substituted OPEs such as TCEP may be less toxic. Due to a lack of toxicity reference values that match the regional environmental characteristics, the ecological risk of metals in water bodies cannot be accurately assessed. The Fen River is the second-largest tributary of the Yellow River in China, and the sustainability of this area is threatened by heavy metal pollution caused by intensive industrial and agricultural activities. In this study, site-specific water quality criteria (WQCs) for heavy metals in the Fen River were derived considering toxicity data from native aquatic organisms and regional water quality factors (e.g., water hardness). Short-term WQCs for Mn, Cu, Cd, Zn, Cr, Pb, and Ni were 2026.15, 98.62, 10.02, 63.07, 6.06, 166.74, and 132.73 μg/L, respectively, and long-term WQCs were 166.53, 29.71, 2.18, 19.29, 4.15, 6.38, and 14.76 μg/L, respectively. The distribution characteristics of these metals during the wet season in 2020 were explored, and their average concentrations in the river water did not exceed the environmental quality standards for surface water in China but were higher than the world average levels. Cr was the main pollutant in the sampling sites of Yaodu region, Hongdong Shitan, Xiao River, and Duanchun River, as was Pb in Duanchun River. Based on the site-specific WQCs, using hazardous quotient (HQ) and margin of safety (MOS 10 ) approaches, a high risk of Pb was identified in the Duanchun River, and a medium risk of Cr might occur at midstream and downstream of Yaodu and Xiaodian. The results will provide a reference basis for heavy metal pollution control and water quality management in the Fen River.

In this study, the spatial distribution characteristics of nine alkylphenols (APs) in the Yongding River and Beiyun River were analyzed. The differences in the concentrations and spatial distribution patterns of nine APs were systematically evaluated using principal component analysis (PCA). The relationships between the concentration distribution patterns and the risks associated with nine APs were investigated under various categories of land use conditions in the region. The results demonstrated that the APs were widely present in both rivers, and the pollution risks associated with the APs were more severe in the Yongding River than in the Beiyun River. The results show that the contamination risks associated with 4-NP were the most serious in the two rivers, with detection percentages of 100% and 96.3%, respectively. In the Yongding River, the APs showed a tendency of low concentration levels in the upper reaches and high levels in the middle and lower regions. Meanwhile, the overall concentration levels of the APs in the Beiyun River were relatively high. However, despite the differences between the upper and middle regions of the Yongding River, the distribution pattern of the APs in the Beiyun River was basically stable. The concentration levels and risk quotient of the APs were negatively correlated with the vegetation cover land use type and positively correlated with the cropland and unused land use types within 500 m, 1 km, and 2 km. The purpose of this study was to provide theoretical data support and a basis for AP pollution risk evaluations in the Yongding River and Beiyun River.

Water quality criteria (WQC) for the protection of aquatic organisms mainly focus on the maximum threshold values of the pollutants that do not have harmful effects on aquatic organisms. The WQC value is the result obtained based on scientific experiments in the laboratory and data fitting extrapolation and is the limit of the threshold value of pollutants or other harmful factors in the water environment. Until now, many studies have been carried out on WQC for the protection of aquatic organisms internationally, and several countries have also issued their own relevant technical guidelines. Thus, the WQC method for the protection of aquatic organisms has been basically formed, with species sensitivity distribution (SSD) as the main method and the assessment factor (AF) as the auxiliary method. In addition, in terms of the case studies on WQC, many scholars have conducted relevant case studies on various pollutants. At the national level, several countries have also released WQC values for typical pollutants. This study systematically discusses the general situation, theoretical methodology and research progress of WQC for the protection of aquatic organisms, and deeply analyzes the key scientific issues that need to be considered in the research of WQC. Furthermore, combined with the specific characteristics of the emerging pollutants, some new ideas and directions for future WQC research for the protection of aquatic organisms are also proposed.

Copper (Cu) exists in a variety of forms in different aquatic environments, and affects their bioavailability. In this study we provide a systematic review on toxicity of Cu which focuses on identifying evidence in the mechanisms of Cu toxicity, and apply an adverse outcome pathway (AOP) analysis to identify multiple potential mechanisms and their interactions of Cu toxicity to fish. This analysis process included the mechanisms of behavior toxicant, oxidative toxicant, ion regulation disruption toxicity, as well as endocrine disruption toxicity. It was found that at low levels of Cu exposure, swimming, avoid predators, locating prey and other sensory functions will be impaired, and the organism will suffer from metabolic alkalosis and respiratory acidosis following the inhibition of the carbonic anhydrase active. The main pathway of acute toxicity of Cu to fish is the inhibition of the Na + /K + -ATPase enzyme, and lead to reduced intracellular sodium absorption, as well as Cu-induced increased cell permeability, in turn resulting in increased sodium ion loss, leading to cardiovascular collapse and respiratory insufficiency. The endocrine disruption toxicity of Cu to fish caused growth inhibition and reproductive reduction. In addition, there are several key pathways of Cu toxicity that are affected by hardness (e.g., Ca 2+ ) and intracellular DOC concentrations, including inhibiting Cu-induction, improving branchial gas exchange, altering membrane transport functions, decreasing Na + loss, and increasing Na + uptake. A total of 34 antibiotics from five major classes of antibiotics, including macrolides, sulfonamides, quinolones, tetracyclines and chloramphenicol, were considered as contaminants, considering the Yellow River Estuary as the study area. The distribution, sources and ecological risks of typical antibiotics in the Yellow River Estuary were investigated using an optimized solid-phase extraction pre-treatment and an Agilent 6410B tandem triple-quadrupole liquid chromatography-mass spectrometer for antibiotic detection. The results show that antibiotics were widely present in the water bodies of the Yellow River Estuary, with 14 antibiotics detected to varying degrees, including a high detection rate for lincomycin hydrochloride. Farming wastewater and domestic sewage were the primary sources of antibiotics in the Yellow River Estuary. The distribution characteristics of antibiotics in the study area were linked to the development of farming and social activities. The ecological risk evaluation of 14 antibiotics in the Yellow River Estuary watershed showed that clarithromycin and doxycycline hydrochloride were present at medium-risk levels, and lincomycin hydrochloride, sulfamethoxazole, methomyl, oxifloxacin, enrofloxacin, sulfadiazine, roxithromycin, sulfapyridine, sulfadiazine and ciprofloxacin were present at low-risk levels in the samples collected from water bodies of the Yellow River Estuary. This study provides novel, beneficial information for the assessment of the ecological risk presented by antibiotics in the Yellow River Estuary water bodies and provides a scientific basis for future antibiotic pollution control in the Yellow River Basin.

Organophosphate esters (OPEs), as flame retardants and plasticizers, have been numerously explored regarding the occurrence and ecotoxicology. Given their toxicity, persistency and bio-accumulative potential, however, they may pose negative effects on ecosystems, regarding which is a growing global concern. Accordingly, the present review systematically analyses the recent literature to (1) elucidate their worldwide distribution, bioaccumulation, and biomagnification potential, (2) determine their interim water quality criteria (i.e., effect thresholds), and (3) preliminarily assess the ecological risks for 32 OPEs in aquatic ecosystems. The results showed that the spatiotemporal distribution of OPEs was geographically specific and closely related to human activities (i.e., megacities), especially halogenated-OPEs. We also found that precipitation of airborne particulates could affect the concentrations of OPEs in soil, and there was a positive correlation between the bioaccumulation and hydrophobicity of OPEs. Tris(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate may exhibit high bioaccumulation in aquatic organisms. A substantial difference was found among interim water quality criteria for OPEs, partly attributable to the variation of their available toxicity data. Tris(phenyl) phosphate (TPHP) and tris(1,3-dichloroisopropyl) phosphate with the lowest predicted no-effect concentration showed the strongest toxicity of growth and reproduction. Through the application of the risk quotient and joint probability curve, TPHP and tris(chloroethyl) phosphate tended to pose moderate risks, which should receive more attention for risk management. Mineral elements and antibiotic-resistant bacterial pollutants in livestock and poultry farms' wastewater are often sources of ecological and public health problems. To understand the heavy-metal pollution status and the characteristics of drug-resistant Escherichia coli (E. coli) in swine-farm wastewater in Shandong Province and to provide guidance for the rational use of mineral-element additives, common antibiotics, and quaternary ammonium compound disinfectants on swine farms, 10 mineral elements were measured and E. coli isolated from wastewater and its resistance to 29 commonly used antibiotics and resistance genes was determined. Finally, phylogenetic and multi-locus sequence typing (MLST) analyses was performed on E. coli. The results showed serious pollution from iron and zinc, with a comprehensive pollution index of 708.94 and 3.13, respectively. It is worth noting that average iron levels in 75% (12/16) of the districts exceed allowable limits. Multidrug-resistant E. coli were found in every city of the province. The E. coli isolated from swine-farm wastewater were mainly resistant to tetracyclines (95.3%), chloramphenicol (77.8%), and sulfonamides (62.2%), while antibiotic resistance genes for quinolones, tetracyclines, sulfonamides, aminoglycosides, and β-lactams were all more than 60%. The clonal complex 10 (CC10) was prevalent, and ST10 and ST48 were dominant in E. coli isolates. Multidrug-resistant E. coli were widely distributed, with mainly A genotypes. However, the mechanism of the effect of iron on antibiotic resistance needs more study in this area. The chloride in water frequently exceeds the standard; directly quoting foreign water-quality criteria (WQC) or standards will inevitably reduce the scientific value of the water-quality standard (WQS) in China. Additionally, this may lead to the under- or overprotection of water bodies. This study summarized the sources, distribution, pollution status, and hazards of chloride in China's water bodies. Additionally, we compared and analyzed the basis for setting WQS limits for chloride in China; we systematically analyzed the basis for setting the WQC for chloride in foreign countries, especially the United States. Finally, we collected and screened data on the toxicity of chloride to aquatic organisms; we also used the species sensitivity distribution (SSD) method to derive the WQC value for chloride, which is 187.5 mg·L -1 . We put forward a recommended value for freshwater WQS for chloride in China: less than 200 mg·L -1 . The study of a freshwater WQC for chloride is not only a key point of environmental research, but also an urgent demand to ensure water ecological protection in China. The results of this study are of great significance for the environmental management of chloride, protection of aquatic organisms, and risk assessment, especially for the revision of WQSs.

Alkylphenols (APs) are ubiquitous and generally present in higher residue levels in the environment. The present work focuses on the development of a set of in silico models to predict the aquatic toxicity of APs with incomplete/unknown toxicity data in aquatic environments. To achieve this, a QSAR-ICE-SSD model was constructed for aquatic organisms by combining quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR), interspecies correlation estimation (ICE), and species sensitivity distribution (SSD) models in order to obtain the hazardous concentrations (HCs) of selected APs. The research indicated that the keywords "alkylphenol" and "nonylphenol" were most commonly studied. The selected ICE models were robust (R 2 : 0.70-0.99; p-value < 0.01). All models had a high reliability cross- validation success rates (>75%), and the HC 5 predicted with the QSAR-ICE-SSD model was 2-fold than that derived with measured experimental data. The HC 5 values demonstrated nearly linear decreasing trend from 2-MP to 4-HTP, while the decreasing trend from 4-HTP to 4-DP became shallower, indicates that the toxicity of APs to aquatic organisms increases with the addition of alkyl carbon chain lengths. The ecological risks assessment (ERA) of APs revealed that aquatic organisms were at risk from exposure to 4-NP at most river stations (the highest risk quotient (RQ) = 1.51), with the highest relative risk associated with 2.9% of 4-NP detected in 82.9% of the sampling sites. The targeted APs posed potential ecological risks in the Yongding and Beiyun River according to the mixture ERA. The increasing exploitation and application of rare earth elements (REEs) may induce hazardous risks to freshwater aquatic organisms. Due to the lack of water quality criteria (WQC) and sufficient reliable toxicity data, little information is available on the ecological risk of REEs in surface water. In this study, lanthanum (La) toxicity data were collected from published toxicological studies, and the data quality was assessed using a toxicological data reliability assessment tool. To obtain more toxicity data, Daphnia magna, Cyprinus carpio, and Dania rerio embryos were selected as surrogate species, and an interspecies correlation estimation (ICE) model was used to predict the toxicity of La for untested species. The species sensitivity distributions (SSDs) of La toxicity and WQC were investigated. Differences were observed in the hazardous concentrations for 5% of species (HC 5 ), but no statistically significant differences were noted in the SSD curves between the measured acute toxicity data and the predicted data. For the SSDs constructed from the measured toxicity data, the ICE-predicted toxicity data and all acute data supplemented with the ICE-predicted data, the acute WQC values of La were 88, 1022 and 256 μg/L, respectively. According to the SSD and corresponding HC 5 of chronic toxicity data, the chronic WQC was 14 μg/L. Organophosphate esters (OPEs) are widespread in various environmental media, and can disrupt thyroid endocrine signaling pathways. Mechanisms by which OPEs disrupt thyroid hormone (TH) signal transduction are not fully understood. Here, we present in vivo-in vitro-in silico evidence establishing OPEs as environmental THs competitively entering the brain to inhibit growth of zebrafish via multiple signaling pathways. OPEs can bind to transthyretin (TTR) and thyroxine-binding globulin, thereby affecting the transport of TH in the blood, and to the brain by TTR through the blood-brain barrier. When GH3 cells were exposed to OPEs, cell proliferation was significantly inhibited given that OPEs are competitive inhibitors of TH. Cresyl diphenyl phosphate was shown to be an effective antagonist of TH. Chronic exposure to OPEs significantly inhibited the growth of zebrafish by interfering with thyroperoxidase and thyroglobulin to inhibit TH synthesis. Based on comparisons of modulations of gene expression with the Gene Ontology and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes databases, signaling pathways related to thyroid endocrine functions, such as receptor-ligand binding and regulation of hormone levels, were identified as being affected by exposure to OPEs. Effects were also associated with the biosynthesis and metabolism of lipids, and neuroactive ligand-receptor interactions. Water quality criteria (WQC) play an important role in the environmental management of pollutants in different countries or institutions. It has been found that endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) can potentially alter functions of the endocrine system and consequently cause adverse effects in aquatic organisms. Therefore, the complicated modes of action and mechanisms of EDCs should be carefully considered in WQC studies. For example, the research regarding the WQC derivation of EDCs should prioritize sensitive aquatic species in consideration of the WQC derivation. Second, the chronic toxicity of EDCs should be of utmost concern. In addition, the appropriate effects and endpoints of EDCs should be carefully selected for the WQC derivation. Silver is toxic to freshwater aquatic organisms and aquatic ecosystems, and it is necessary to develop regional water quality criteria (WQC) for silver to protect the freshwater aquatic organisms in China. The toxicity database of silver for freshwater aquatic organisms involved 121 acute toxicity values for 35 species (6 phyla and 27 families) and 15 chronic toxicity values for 4 species (2 phyla and 4 families). Teleost fish showed the most sensitivity to silver after both short-term and long-term exposure. Significant correlations between the natural logarithms of hardness and the natural logarithms of acute silver toxicity were found for Daphnia magna , Oncorhynchus mykiss , and Pimephales promelas . The criterion maximum concentration (CMC) was calculated by the species sensitivity distribution method with sigmoid as the best fitting model (Adj R 2 0.9797), and the criterion continuous concentration (CCC) was obtained by the acute-to-chronic ratio method. The CMC and CCC of silver were e1.58ln(HCaCO3)-8.68, and e1.58ln(HCaCO3)-10.28 respectively, in China, with water hardness (HCaCO3, mg/L) as an independent variable. This research can provide a basis and reference for the management of silver to protect freshwater aquatic organisms in China.

Tris (1,3-dichloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TDCIPP), an alternative to brominated flame retardants, might pose an exposure risk to humans and wild animals during fetal development. Our recent study suggested that short-term TDCIPP exposure during early development caused sex-dependent behavioral alteration in adults. In the present study, multigenerational neurodevelopmental toxicity upon early-life exposure of parental zebrafish was evaluated, and the possible underlying mechanisms were further explored. Specifically, after embryonic exposure (0-10 days post-fertilization, dpf) to TDCIPP (0, 0.01, 0.10, and 1.00 μM), zebrafish larvae were cultured in clean water until the sexually matured to produce progeny (F1). The results confirmed neurodevelopmental toxicity in F1 larvae characterized by changes of developmental endpoints, reduced thigmotaxis, as well as altered transcription of genes including myelin basic protein a (mbpa), growth associated protein (gap43) and synapsin IIa (syn2a). Sex-specific changes in thyroid hormones (THs) indicated the relationship of abnormal THs levels with previously reported neurotoxicity in adult females after early-life exposure to TDCIPP. Similar changing profiles of TH levels (increased T3 and decreased T4) in adult females and F1 eggs, but not in F1 larvae, suggested that the TH disruptions were primarily inherited from the maternal fish. Further results demonstrated hypermethylation of global DNA and key genes related to TH transport including transthyretin (ttr) and solute carrier family 16 member 2 (slc16a2), which might affect the transport of THs to target tissues, thus at least partially contributing to the neurodevelopmental toxicity in F1 larvae. Overall, our results confirmed that early-life TDCIPP exposure of parental fish could affect the early neurodevelopment of F1 offspring. Transition metals are widespread in aquatic environments and can be harmful when concentrations exceed thresholds. Especially for fish, an important component of the human diet, low concentrations of transition metals will directly affect their well-being. Different taxa are protected by unified water quality criteria (WQC) thresholds, which rarely consider the ecological status and economic value of different species. There is therefore an urgent need to study taxon-specific sensitivity. The present study established the species sensitivity distributions of nine typical transition metals (Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, Ag, Cd and Hg) for protecting freshwater and seawater fish based on non-parametric kernel density estimation methods, and then derived their acute and chronic HC5-values. The results showed that Ag and Hg have the highest acute toxic potency to fish in freshwater as well as seawater. Compared with marine fish, freshwater fish were more tolerant to acute exposure to Cr, Fe, Ni and Zn, whilst being more sensitive to Ag and Cd. Moreover, edible fish are more sensitive than other fish to these metals in both freshwater and seawater, encouraging more protection of economically valuable fish that may potentially affect human health. Modulating the structure of a photocatalyst at the molecular level can improve the photocatalytic efficiency and provides a guide for the synthesis of highly qualified photocatalysts. In this study, TiO 2 was modified by various organic compounds to form different TiO 2 -based hybrid photocatalysts. 1,10-Phenanthroline (Phen) is an organic material with delocalized π-conjugated systems. It was used to modify TiO 2 to form the hybrid photocatalyst Phen/TiO 2 . Furthermore, 1,10-phenanthrolin-5-amine (Phen-NH 2 ) and 1,10-phenanthroline-5-nitro (Phen-NO 2 ) were also used to modify TiO 2 to form NH 2 -Phen/TiO 2 and NO 2 -Phen/TiO 2 , respectively. The samples of TiO 2 , Phen/TiO 2 , NO 2 -Phen/TiO 2 , and NH 2 -Phen/TiO 2 were carefully characterized, and their photocatalytic performance was compared. The results indicated that the photocatalytic efficiency followed the order of NH 2 -Phen/TiO 2 > NO 2 -Phen/TiO 2 > Phen/TiO 2 > TiO 2 . Organophosphorus flame retardants (OPFRs) have been implicated as neurotoxicants, but their potential neurotoxicity and mechanisms remain poorly understood. Herein, we investigated the neurotoxicity of selected OPFRs using zebrafish as a model organism. Environmentally relevant concentrations (3-1500 nM) of three classes of OPFRs (aryl-OPFRs, chlorinated-OPFRs, and alkyl-OPFRs) were tested in zebrafish larvae (2-144 h post-fertilisation) alongside the neurotoxic chemical chlorpyrifos (CPF) that inhibits acetylcholinesterase (AChE). Exposure to aryl-OPFRs and CPF inhibited AChE activities, while chlorinated- and alkyl-OPFRs did not inhibit these enzymes. Biolayer interferometry (BLI) was used to probe interactions between OPFRs and AChE. The association and dissociation response curves showed that, like CPF, all three selected aryl-OPFRs, triphenyl phosphate (TPHP), tricresyl phosphate (TCP) and cresyl diphenyl phosphate (CDP), bound directly to AChE. The affinity constant (K D ) for TPHP, TCP, CDP and CPF was 2.18 × 10 -4 , 5.47 × 10 -5 , 1.05 × 10 -4 and 1.70 × 10 -5 M, respectively. In addition, molecular docking revealed that TPHP, TCP, CDP and CPF bound to AChE with glide scores of - 7.8, - 8.3, - 8.1 and - 7.3, respectively. Furthermore, the calculated binding affinity between OPFRs and AChE correlated well with the K D values measured by BLI. Some studies have suggested possible estrogen actions for antidepressants such as fluoxetine. However, the specific molecular mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, the molecular mechanism of fluoxetine-induced the proliferation of breast cancer SKBR3 and MCF-7 cells was evaluated by detecting ERα and GPR30-mediated ERK and PI3K/AKT signals. We found that low concentrations of fluoxetine upregulated the expression of GPR30, ERα, CyclinD1, and C-MYC proteins, as well as elevated the phosphorylation of ERK and AKT. The phosphorylation of ERK and AKT decreased when the cells were pretreated with ERα inhibitor ICI, GPR30 inhibitor G15, and PI3K inhibitor WM prior to fluoxetine exposure. The addition of these inhibitors also attenuated the fluoxetine-induced cell proliferation. These findings indicated that fluoxetine activated the PI3K/AKT and ERK signaling cascades via GPR30 to derive the cell proliferation. Cresyl diphenyl phosphate (CDP), as a kind of aryl substituted organophosphate esters (OPEs), is commonly used as emerging flame retardants and plasticizers detected in environmental media. Due to the accumulation of CDP in organisms, it is very important to discover the toxicological mechanism and metabolic process of CDP. Hence, liver microsomes of crucian carps (Carassius carassius) were prepared for in vitro metabolism kinetics assay to estimate metabolism rates of CDP. After 140 min incubation, the depletion of CDP accounted for 58.1%-77.1% (expect 0.5 and 2 μM) of the administrated concentrations. The depletion rates were best fitted to the Michaelis-Menten model (R 2  = 0.995), where maximum velocity (V max ) and Michaelis-Menten constant (K m ) were 12,700 ± 2120 pmol min -1 ·mg -1 protein and 1030 ± 212 μM, respectively. Moreover, the in vitro hepatic clearance (C Lint ) of CDP was 12.3 μL min -1 ·mg -1 protein. Log K ow and bioconcentration factor (BCF) of aryl-OPEs were both higher than those of alkyl- and chlorinated-OPEs, indicating that CDP may easily accumulate in aquatic organisms. The results made clear that the metabolism rate of CDP was greater than those of other OPEs detected in liver microsomes in previous research. This paper was first of its kind to comprehensively investigate the in vitro metabolic kinetics of CDP in fish liver microsomes. Following the world-wide ban of brominated flame retardants (BFRs), organophosphate esters (OPEs), which could potentially affect human health and ecosystem safety, have been frequently detected in various environmental media. However, the knowledge regarding the underlying toxicity effects of OPEs remains limited. In order to address these issues, this study reviewed the related reports which have been published in recent years. This analysis process included 12 OPEs, 10 model organisms, and 15 cell lines, which were used to systematically examine the mechanisms of endocrine disruption, neurotoxicity, hepatotoxicity, and cardiotoxicity, as well as reproductive and developmental toxicity. Subsequently, an adverse outcome pathway (AOP) framework of the toxicological effects of OPEs was built. The results demonstrated that multiple different pathways may lead to a single same adverse outcome (AO), and there was a certain degree of correlation among the different AOs. It was found that among all the 12 OPEs, tris(1,3-dichloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TDCIPP) may potentially be the most toxic. In addition, rather than the parent chemicals, the metabolites of OPEs may also have different degrees of toxicity effects on aquatic organisms and humans. Overall, the results of the present study also suggested that an AOP framework should be built via fully utilizing the existing toxicity data of OPEs based on in vivo-in vitro-in silico to completely and deeply understand the toxic mechanisms of OPEs. The extensive use of antibiotics has, in recent years, caused antimicrobial resistance and multidrug resistance in Escherichia coli to gradually develop into a worldwide problem. These resistant E. coli could be transmitted to humans through animal products and animal feces in the environment, thereby creating a problem for bacterial treatment for humans and animals and resulting in a public health issue. Monitoring the resistance of E. coli throughout the broiler fattening period is therefore of great significance for both the poultry industry and public health. In this longitudinal study, samples were taken from 6 conventional broiler fattening farms in Shandong Province, China, at 3 different times within 1 fattening period. The overall isolation rate of E. coli was 53.04% (375/707). Antibiotic resistance was very common in the E. coli isolated from these farms, and differed for different antibiotics, with ampicillin having the highest rate (92.86%) and cefoxitin the lowest (10.12%). Multidrug resistance was as high as 91.07%. More importantly, both the resistance rate of E. coli to the different drugs and the detection rate of drug resistance genes increased over time. The mobile colistin resistance (mcr-1) gene was detected in 24.40% of the strains, and these strains often carried other drug resistance genes, such as those conferring aminoglycoside, β-lactamase, tetracycline, and sulfonamide resistance. Antimicrobial resistance and drug resistance genes in E. coli were least common in the early fattening stage. The individual detection rates of sul1, sul3, aacC4, aphA3, and mcr-1 were significantly lower (P < 0.05) for the early fattening stage than for the middle and late stages. Constructed wetlands (CWs) are of great socioeconomic significance because they can remove anthropogenic compounds from aquatic environments. However, no information is available about the removal of persistent chlorinated paraffins by CWs. This study investigates the occurrences, fates, and mass balances of short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs), medium-chain chlorinated paraffins (MCCPs), and long-chain chlorinated paraffins (LCCPs) in a CW ecosystem. MCCPs were the predominant compounds in water, sediments, and plants within the system. The amounts of SCCPs, MCCPs, and LCCPs entering the wetland were 3.3, 6.8, and 3.4 g/day, respectively. Overall removal efficiencies were 51-78%, 76-86%, and 76-91% for SCCPs, MCCPs, and LCCPs, respectively, and the greatest reduction in CPs was observed in the subsurface flow wetland unit. CPs were predominantly adsorbed onto the sediment and bioaccumulated in the plants, and their organic carbon-water partitioning and plant-water accumulation increased as the carbon and chlorine numbers increased. Sediment sorption (12-38%) and degradation (12-50%) contributed the most to the removal of CPs, but bioaccumulation of CPs in plants (3.8-12%) should not be neglected. Wetlands can economically remove large amounts of CPs, but sediment in the wetland systems could be a sink for CP pollutants.

Heavy metals and antimicrobial resistant bacteria in livestock and poultry environments can cause declines in production and significant economic losses, leading to potential environmental and public health issues. In this study, the heavy metal pollution status of livestock breeding water bodies in the Dawen river basin of Shandong Province in China was evaluated, and a total of 10 heavy metals were measured. In addition, antimicrobial susceptibility tests were conducted for Escherichia coli strains isolated from the water samples. The results showed that among all the metals, copper, zinc, and iron were detected at each sampling point, followed by nickel (detection rate of 95.74%), arsenic (detection rate of 89.36%), selenium (detection rate of 68.09%), lead (detection rate of 27.66%), and mercury (detection rate of 12.77%). Cadmium and hexavalent chromium were not detected. The contents of nine heavy metals were below the existing water standard values in China, whereas the iron pollution index in the water body in the study area was large and may pose a potential risk. A total of 17 E. coli isolates showed different resistance to β-lactams, aminoglycosides, tetracyclines, quinolone antibiotics and chloramphenicol, but were mainly resistant to β-lactams and tetracyclines. The detection rate of the tetA resistance gene was relatively high, indicating the overuse of cephalosporins and tetracyclines. Tris (1,3-dichloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TDCPP) is a type halogenated organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs), which has been identified as contaminants of emerging concern (CECs). The use and production of OPFRs began to increase gradually when brominated flame retardants (BFRs) were banned. Halogenated OPFRs, especially TDCPP have been considered to lead to mutagenicity and carcinogenesis and major concerns have been raised regarding their toxicity. In this study, the toxicity effects and mechanisms of TDCPP were summarized and ecological risk assessment was made regarding its potential impact on freshwater organisms. TDCPP has been widely detected in ecosystems throughout the world, with observed toxicity effects on both humans and freshwater organisms. Inhalation of the dust was found to be the main exposure for humans. TDCPP could be metabolized in the human body, and medium stability was achieved in human body with the main metabolite BDCPP. Aside from mutagenicity and carcinogenesis, TDCPP was also found to have the potential for endocrine disruption and impairing the human reproductive system. Furthermore, this study reviewed the results of previous toxicity experiments, including acute toxicity, growth and development toxicity, neurotoxicity, and hepatotoxicity in freshwater organisms. Risk assessment was made using the safety threshold method by comparing the toxicity data with the exposure data in freshwater. HC 5 (hazardous concentration for 5% of organisms) derived based on traditional endpoints of acute toxicity LC 50 (median lethal concentration) or EC 50 (concentration for 50% of maximal effect) was 877 μg/L. This value was much higher than the exposure concentration levels in the surface water with EXD 90 (exposure data with cumulative probability 90%) of 65.22 ng/L. However, based on the growth and development toxicity data, the derived HC 5 was 33.33 ng/L and the calculated MOS (margin of safety) was below 1. Tris (2-ethylhexyl) phosphate (TEHP) is one of the most commonly used organophosphorus flame retardant (OPFR) analogues and is commonly detected in surface water and sediments. Limited information is available about the metabolic pathway or metabolite formation related to TEHP in fish. In this study, rare minnows (Gobiocyprisrarus) were exposed to TEHP in static water for 30 d to investigate the bioaccumulation and metabolite distribution in the fish muscle, liver, kidney, gill, GI-tract, ovary and testis. Based on the estimated k up , parent and k d,parent values, the bioconcentration factors (BCF parent ) of TEHP in fish tissues were calculated in the order of kidney > ovary ≈ liver ≈ testis > gill ≈ GI-tract > muscle; this finding was consistent with the results of our previous study on other alkyl-substituted OPFRs. In addition, this study identified the metabolic profiles of TEHP in the liver. TEHP was oxidatively metabolized by the fish to a dealkylated metabolite (di 2-ethylhexyl phosphate; DEHP) and hydroxylated TEHP (OH-TEHP). OH-TEHP further underwent extensive phase II metabolism to yield glucuronic acid conjugates. DEHP was mainly distributed in rare minnow in the following order: liver > GI-tract > kidney ≫ other tissues. However, the metabolite showed lower accumulation potential in fish tissues than TEHP, with metabolite parent concentration factors (MPCFs) for DEHP of less than 0.1 in all the investigated tissues. The BCF parent values of TEHP in various fish tissues were only 9.0 × 10 -3 -7.2 × 10 -4 times its estimated tissue-water partition coefficient (K tissue-water ) values based on tissue lipid, protein and water contents, which indicated the significance of biotransformation in reducing the bioaccumulation potential of TEHP in fish. Interest in the risks posed by trace concentrations of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in surface waters is increasing, particularly with regard to potential effects of long-term, low-dose exposures of aquatic organisms. In most cases, the actual studies on PPCPs were risk assessments at screening-level, and accurate estimates were scarce. In this study, exposure and ecotoxicity data of 50 PPCPs were collected based on our previous studies, and a multiple-level environmental risk assessment was performed. The 50 selected PPCPs are likely to be frequently detected in surface waters of China, with concentrations ranging from the ng L -1 to the low-g L -1 , and the risk quotients based on median concentrations ranged from 2046 for nonylphenol to 0 for phantolide. A semi-probabilistic approach screened 33 PPCPs that posed potential risks to aquatic organisms, among which 15 chemicals (nonylphenol, sulfamethoxazole, di (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, 17β-ethynyl estradiol, caffeine, tetracycline, 17β-estradiol, estrone, dibutyl phthalate, ibuprofen, carbamazepine, tonalide, galaxolide, triclosan, and bisphenol A) were categorized as priority compounds according to an optimized risk assessment, and then the refined probabilistic risk assessment indicated 12 of them posed low to high risk to aquatic ecosystem, with the maximum risk products ranged from 1.54% to 17.38%. Based on these results, we propose that the optimized risk assessment was appropriate for screening priority contaminants at national scale, and when a more accurate estimation is required, the refined probability risk assessment is useful. Benzene homologues have significant toxic effects to aquatic organisms. In this study, the acute toxicity data of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene (BTEX) were collected and screened, and the toxicity extrapolation model of paired BTEX was established. The results showed that except the correlation between benzene and xylene was not strong due to insufficient data, the linear correlation of the other five paired BTEX was good (p < 0.01), and R 2 fitted by the four out of five paired BTEX was greater than 0.85. The cross validation showed that ethylbenzene-xylene model was optimal, and for most species (81.8%), the established five BTEX models had a prediction error of less than 10%. Also, these extrapolation models were validated by experimental results of Pseudorasbora parva. The difference between the predicted and measured values of the acute toxicity of BTEX was less than 1 fold, which indicated that the extrapolation model had high accuracy., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Ltd. Colibacillosis, caused by Escherichia coli, is one of the most common bacterial diseases of chickens. The high incidence and considerable economic losses associated with colibacillosis make it a significant concern worldwide. In recent years, the efficacy of colistin has been severely impacted by the emergence of plasmid-mediated colistin resistance genes, especially mcr-1. Therefore, monitoring of antibiotic resistance, particularly colistin resistance, amongst E. coli strains is vitally important to the future growth and sustainability of the poultry industry. In this study, a total of 130 E. coli strains were isolated from the livers of chickens displaying symptoms of colibacillosis in Tai'an, China. Isolates were screened for their susceptibility to various antibiotics and for the presence of mobile colistin resistance genes and other antibiotic resistance genes. Overall, 75 (57.7%) isolates showed resistance to colistin and were positive for mcr-1. The mobile colistin resistance genes, mcr-2, -3, and -4, were not detected in this study. Of the 75 mcr-1-positive isolates, all (100%) also carried tetracycline resistance genes, 71 (94.7%) also contained genes associated with β-lactam resistance, 59 (78.7%) contained aminoglycoside resistance genes, and 57 (76%) contained sulfonamide resistance genes. This high prevalence of multidrug resistance among mcr-1-positive E. coli isolates, including the production of extended-spectrum β-lactamases, is highly concerning. The surveillance findings presented here will be conducive to our understanding of the prevalence and characteristics of multidrug-resistance in E. coli in the Tai'an area and will provide a better scientific basis for the clinical treatment of colibacillosis in chickens., (Copyright © 2019. Copper (Cu) bioavailability varies under water conditions. In the present study, the whole life of zebrafish was divided into three different life stages (larvae, juvenile and adult) based on the growth curve, then the influences of water hardness and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentration on the acute toxicity of zebrafish were respectively investigated. The results indicated that the life stages had significant effects on Cu toxicity. The larvae stage was less sensitive to Cu than both the juvenile and adult stages. With the increase of water hardness, the toxicity of Cu on zebrafish was decreased, a linear relationship was observed between water hardness and Cu toxicity, and the same was true for DOC concentration. The results showed that taking the 24 days juvenile zebrafish to study the water quality criteria of Cu was stable, sensitive and economical.

In the present study, biochar particles (BPs) produced by the co-pyrolysis of sewage sludge and corncobs at temperatures of 300, 500, and 700°C were characterized. The Pb 2+ adsorption properties and the heavy metal leaching toxicity rates of the BPs were investigated. It was found that the adsorption kinetics of the Pb 2+ can be accurately described by a pseudo-second-order model, and the equilibrium adsorption data were well represented by both the Langmuir and the Freundilich Equations. The toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) results indicated that the leaching concentrations of all the heavy metals were below the set limit of China's national standard (Identification Standard for Hazardous Waste Extraction Toxicity Identification, China National Standard, GB 5085.3-2007). The results of this study can successfully provide scientific support for future corncob treatment and sludge pollution control.

Water quality criteria are the basis for formulating environmental water quality standards, and are also an important part of environmental water protection and environmental management programs. The current study focused on a systematic discussion of the current research progress of water quality criteria theories and methodology for aquatic organisms both in China and internationally. This study also successfully pointed out key scientific issues which should be considered in the determination of water quality criteria guidelines from the following perspectives for a national strategy: the selection of pollutants; data collection and screening; species selection; water quality criteria derivation methods, and so on. For the first time, this study systematically introduced technology for the determination of water quality criteria guidelines for protecting aquatic organisms which was suitable for China's regional characteristics and national conditions. Alkylated organophosphate esters (alkyl-OPEs) are widely used and extensively detected in aquatic organisms. This work investigated the tissue-specific toxicokinetics of two common alkyl-OPEs, tri(2‑butoxyethyl) phosphate (TBOEP) and tri‑n‑butyl phosphate (TNBP) in Chinese rare minnow (Gobiocypris rarus) through a 50 day uptake and depuration experiment. The tissue-specific bioconcentration factor (BCF) values for the two alkyl-OPEs ranged from 1 to 30 L/kg wet weight (ww), with the kidney and ovary as the tissues with the highest accumulation. The tissue BCFs only exhibited a significant correlation with lipid contents only in storage tissues (i.e., muscle, brain, ovary and testis), indicating that lipids might not be the major contributor to tissue distribution of TBOEP and TNBP. However, the contribution of blood perfusion and active transport to tissue-specific OPE accumulation needs to be further investigated. Lower accumulation of metabolites than parent chemicals was observed, with metabolite parent concentration factors (MPCFs) <1. Di-alkyl phosphate (DAP), bis(2‑butoxyethyl) phosphate (BBOEP) and di(n-butyl) phosphate (DNBP) were the most abundantly formed metabolites of TBOEP and TNBP in various tissues, followed by the monohydroxylated OPEs (OH-OPEs). However, bis(2‑butoxyethyl) hydroxyethyl phosphate (BBOEHEP), was detected at much lower levels in the tissues. All the investigated metabolites showed high production rates (k prod,metabolites ) in the fish liver, followed by the GI tract and the kidney, indicating the importance of the hepatobiliary and urinary systems in eliminating the metabolites. Tris (1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TCIPP) and tris (2-chloroethyl)phosphate (TCEP) are two widely used chlorinated organophosphate flame retardants (ClOPFRs), and have been frequently detected in various environmental media. Concern is now growing whether TCIPP and TCEP can cause neurotoxicity since they have similar chemical structure with organophosphorus pesticide. Therefore, in this study, zebrafish embryos (2-120 h post-fertilization [hpf]) were exposed to TCIPP or TCEP (0, 100, 500 or 2500 μg/L) or a model neurotoxicant, chlorpyrifos (CPF, 100 μg/L) to investigate the adverse effects and possible mechanisms of TCIPP and TCEP on neurodevelopment. Our results showed that CPF exposure resulted in developmental toxicity including decreased hatching, survival rates and increased malformation rates (e.g., spinal curvature) as well as behavior changes such as decreased locomotive activity in dark stimulation. In contrast, TCIPP and TCEP showed no significant effects on developmental parameters, but caused similar effects on locomotive activity at high concentration, indicating that although not as potent as CPF, TCIPP and TCEP may still cause adverse effects on neurodevelopment. Furthermore, our results suggest that TCIPP and TCEP showed no effects on acetylcholine content or AChE activity, which were considered as the main targets of CPF. However, TCIPP and TCEP exposure can significantly down-regulate the expression of selected genes and proteins related to neurodevelopment (e.g., mbp, syn2a, and α1-tubulin) similar as CPF did. Besides that, TCIPP and TCEP can also affect the transcription of shha and gap43, which were not affected by CPF, pointing out a complex mechanism underlying TCIPP and TCEP's neurodevelopmental toxicity. Overall, our results demonstrated that TCEP and TCIPP may have adverse effect on the neurodevelopment of zebrafish embryos/larvae, but the underlying mechanism is not via the inhibition of acetyl cholinesterase activity., (Copyright © 2018. The negative health effects of bisphenol A (BPA) due to its estrogenic activity result in the increasing usage of alternative bisphenols (BPs) including bisphenol AF (BPAF). To comprehensive understand health effects of BPAF, the MCF-7 cells were used to investigate the effects of BPAF on cell proliferation, intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation, and calcium ion (Ca 2+ ) level. The molecular mechanisms of cell biological responses caused by BPAF were investigated by analyzing target protein expression. The results showed that low-concentration BPAF induces significant effects on MCF-7 cells, including promoting cell proliferation and elevating intracellular ROS and Ca 2+ levels. BPAF in low concentration significantly enhances the protein expression of estrogen receptor α (ERα), G protein-coupled receptor (GPER), c-Myc, and Cyclin D1, as well as increases phosphorylation levels of protein kinase B (Akt) and extracellular signal-regulated kinase (Erk) in MCF-7 cells. After the addition of ERα, GPER, and phosphatidylinositide 3-kinase (PI3K) inhibitors, phosphorylations of Erk and Akt were both inhibited. In addition, specific signal inhibitors significantly attenuated the effects of BPAF. Silencing of GPER also markedly decreased BPAF induced cell proliferation. The present results suggested that BPAF can activate PI3K/Akt and Erk signals via GPER, which, in turn, stimulate cellular biological effects induced by BPAF. Bisphenol F (BPF), one of the alternatives to bisphenol A (BPA), can induce proliferation through the nuclear estrogen receptor ERα (estrogen receptor alpha) pathway in human breast cancer MCF-7 cells. However, the roles of membrane estrogen receptor GPER1 (G-protein-coupled receptor 1)-mediated signaling pathways in MCF-7 cell proliferation caused by BPF are unclear. The influence of BPF on MCF-7 cells was evaluated in terms of cell proliferation, intracellular calcium (Ca 2+ ) fluctuations, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation. The molecular mechanisms of the cellular responses to low doses of BPF were studied through detecting the activations of ERα and GPER1-regulated PI3K/PKB or AKT (phosphatidylinotidol 3-kinase/protein kinase B) and ERK1/2 (extracellular-signa1-regulated kinase 1/2) signals. At 0.01-1 μM, BPF significantly promoted cell proliferation and elevated the levels of intracellular ROS and Ca 2+ . At these concentrations, BPF also significantly upregulated protein expressions of ERα, GPER1, c-myc, and cyclin D and phosphorylations of PKB and ERK1/2. Specific signal inhibitors decreased PKB and ERK1/2 phosphorylations and attenuated the effects of BPF. Silencing of GPER1 also significantly decreased BPF-induced cell proliferation. These results indicate that activating the GPER1-PI3K/PKB and ERK1/2 signals by low doses of BPF can regulate the response of MCF-7 cells and that ERα also influences the effects of exposure to BPF on the cells. Triphenyl phosphate (TPhP), a typical organophosphate ester, is frequently detected in the environment and biota samples. It has been implicated as a neurotoxin as its structure is similar to neurotoxic organophosphate pesticides. The purpose of the present study was to investigate its potential developmental neurotoxicity in fish by using zebrafish larvae as a model. Zebrafish (Danio rerio) embryos were exposed to 0.8, 4, 20 and 100 μg/L of TPhP from 2 until 144 h post-fertilization. TPhP was found to have high bioconcentrations in zebrafish larvae after exposure. Further, it significantly reduced locomotor activity as well as the heart rate at the 100 μg/L concentration. TPhP exposure significantly altered the content of the neurotransmitters γ-aminobutyric and histamine. Downregulation of the genes related to central nervous system development (e.g., α1-tubulin, mbp, syn2a, shha, and elavl3) as well as the corresponding proteins (e.g., α1-tubulin, mbp, and syn2a) was observed, but the gap-43 protein was found to upregulated. Finally, marked inhibition of total acetylcholinesterase activity, which is considered as a biomarker of neurotoxicant exposure, was also observed in the larvae. Our results indicate that exposure to environmentally relevant concentrations of TPhP can affect different parameters related to center nervous system development, and thus contribute to developmental neurotoxicity in early developing zebrafish larvae., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier B.V. Metals can pose hazards to marine species and can adversely affect structures and functions of communities of marine species. However, little is known about how structural properties of metal atoms combined with current geographical and climatic conditions affect their toxic potencies. A mathematical model, based on quantitative structure-activity relationships and species sensitivity distributions (QSAR-SSD) was developed by use of acute toxicities of six metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, and Zn) to eight marine species and accessory environmental conditions. The model was then used to predict toxicities of 31 metals and metalloids and then to investigate relationships between acute water quality criteria (WQC) and environmental conditions in coastal marine environments. The model was also used to predict WQC in the coastal areas of different countries. Given global climate change, the QSAR-SSD model allows development of WQC for metals that will be protective of marine ecosystems under various conditions related to changes in global climate. This approach could be of enormous benefit in delivering an evidence-based approach to support regulatory decision making in management of metal and metalloids in marine waters.

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) induced by bisphenol A (BPA) have been implicated in cellular oxidative damage and carcinogenesis. It is not known whether the potential alternatives of BPA, bisphenol AF (BPAF), and bisphenol F (BPF) can also induce ROS involved in mediating biological responses. This study evaluated the toxicity of BPAF and BPF on cell proliferation, DNA damage, intracellular calcium homeostasis, and ROS generation in MCF-7 human breast cancer cells. The results showed that BPAF at 0.001-1 μM and BPF at 0.01-1 μM significantly increased cell viability and at 25 and 50 μM, both compounds decreased cell viability. At 0.01-10 μM, both BPAF and BPF increased DNA damage and significantly elevated ROS and intracellular Ca 2+ levels in MCF-7 cells. These biological effects were attenuated by the ROS scavenger N-acetylcysteine (NAC), indicating that ROS played a key role in the observed biological effects of BPAF and BPF on MCF-7 cells. These findings can deepen our understanding on the toxicity of BPAF and BPF, and provide basis data to further evaluate the potential health harm and establish environmental standard of BPAF and BPF.
