The fragmentation patterns of cell-free DNA (cfDNA) in plasma can potentially be utilized as diagnostic biomarkers in liquid biopsy. However, our knowledge of this biological process and the information encoded in fragmentation patterns remains preliminary. Here, we investigated the cfDNA fragmentomic characteristics against nucleosome positioning patterns in hematopoietic cells. cfDNA molecules with ends located within nucleosomes were relatively shorter with altered end motif patterns, demonstrating the feasibility of enriching tumor-derived cfDNA in patients with cancer through the selection of molecules possessing such ends. We then developed three cfDNA fragmentomic metrics after end selection, which showed significant alterations in patients with cancer and enabled cancer diagnosis. By incorporating machine learning, we further built high-performance diagnostic models, which achieved an overall area under the curve of 0.95 and 85.1% sensitivity at 95% specificity. Controlling the formation of new lymphatic vessels has been postulated as an innovative therapeutic strategy for various disease phenotypes, including neurodegenerative diseases, metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease, and lymphedema. Yet, compared to the blood vascular system, little is known about the molecular regulation that controls lymphatic tube formation in a synthetic matrix. In this study, we utilize hyaluronic acid (HA)-hydrogels to design a novel platform for decoupled investigation into how mechanical and biochemical cues regulate lymphatic vessel formation in a synthetic matrix. Using HA and controlling the degree of modification provides a method to preserve and modulate key lymphatic markers Prox1, LYVE-1, and Pdpn. The chemistry of the system allows for spatial and temporal patterning of specific peptides and substrate stiffnesses, and an MMP-sensitive crosslinker allowed cells to degrade and remodel their matrix. Through systematic optimization of multiple parameters, we have designed a system that allows human lymphatic endothelial cells (LECs) to self-assemble into vessels in vitro within 3 days. These engineered vessels can be cultured for up to 3 weeks and can be used for high-throughput mechanistic studies, or can be implanted into immunodeficient mice where they have demonstrated the ability to integrate and mature. Collectively, these studies report a novel, fully-defined 3D synthetic matrix system capable of generating lymphatic vessels in vitro that provide promise as an in vitro screening platform and as a therapeutic vessel transplant, which to our knowledge, is the first ever 3D lymphatic tissue engineering approach to not require the use of support cells., (© 2024. Herein, we report the first example of a highly enantioselective alkylative aziridine ring opening. Under the catalysis of a chiral nickel/pyridine-imidazoline complex, asymmetric C(sp 3 )-C(sp 3 ) cross-electrophile coupling between racemic N -sulfonyl styrenyl aziridines and readily available primary alkyl bromides furnishes a variety of highly enantioenriched phenethylamine derivatives with complete regiocontrol and good functional group tolerance. Preliminary mechanistic studies support a reaction pathway consisting of regioselective iodolysis of aziridines in situ and subsequent enantioconvergent coupling of the generated β-amino benzyl iodides with alkyl bromides.

To investigate the potential of computed tomography (CT) images of median palatine suture (MP) for adult age estimation in the Northern and Southwestern Chinese populations. A total of 1110 cranial CT scans from individuals aged 10-79 years, including 557 northern Chinese and 553 southwestern Chinese, were collected for analysis. After volume reformation and multiplanar reconstruction, a total of 20 slices of median palatine suture were selected from each individual. The closure of sutures was analyzed into four stages, and the cumulative scores of 20 slices were recorded as the suture closure score (SCS). The correlations between SCS and age were compared among the two Chinese populations residing in diverse geographic regions. Regression models were established for age estimation. The estimation accuracy was evaluated based on the test set. The mean absolute error (MAE) and the correlation between predicted age and chronological age were calculated to evaluate estimation accuracy. The SCS of MP exhibited a significant correlation with age (0.613, northern male; 0.678, southwestern male; 0.730, northern female; 0.704, Southwestern female; 0.662, total). Furthermore, there were statistically significant differences in SCS among different regions and sex groups (p < 0.001). The cubic regression model had the highest R2 value in all subjects, especially among Northern females and Southwestern males, while the power and quadratic regression models showed the highest R2 value in Northern males and Southwestern females, respectively. In the test set, the Northern cohort demonstrated a lower MAE (9.06 ± 7.32 years, males; 9.17 ± 5.28 years, females) compared to the Southwestern cohort (9.19 ± 7.49 years, male; 10.61 ± 6.83 years, female). Additionally, it was observed that males exhibited a lower MAE than females in both regional groups. WRKY transcription factors are essential for coping with various biotic stresses. Pseudomonas syringae pv. actinidiae (Psa)-induced kiwifruit canker is a major problem restricting kiwifruit yield. Nevertheless, it's unclear how the kiwifruit WRKY genes respond to Psa. Through genome-wide identification, 112 WRKY members were found in 'Hongyang' genome in this work. Promoter analysis revealed that there were many cis-acting elements associated with stress responses in the AcWRKY gene's promoter region. According to transcriptomic analysis, 90 of the AcWRKY genes were differently expressed following Psa, salicylic acid (SA), or methyl jasmonate (MeJA) treatments. Almost all group III WRKYs were responsive to at least one of these treatments, with tissue-specific expression patterns. Quantitative RT-PCR study provided more evidence that Psa and SA treatments significantly induced the expression of the group III WRKY gene AcWRKY94, whereas MeJA treatment repressed it. AcWRKY94 was a transcriptionally active protein localized in the nucleus. Transient overexpression of AcWRKY94 in the leaves of 'Hongyang' enhanced the resistance of kiwifruit to Psa. Overexpression of AcWRKY94 in kiwifruit callus remarkably promoted the expression of PR and JAZ genes associated with SA and JA signals, respectively. These data imply that AcWRKY94 controls the signaling pathway dependent on SA and JA, thereby enhancing resistance to Psa. Proteoglycans (PGs), consisting of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) linked with the core protein through a tetrasaccharide linkage region, play roles in many important biological events. The chemical synthesis of PG glycopeptides is extremely challenging. In this work, the enzymes required for synthesis of chondroitin sulfate (CS) PG (CSPG) have been expressed and the suitable sequence of enzymatic reactions has been established. To expedite CSPG synthesis, the peptide acceptor was immobilized on solid phase and the glycan units were directly installed enzymatically onto the peptide. Subsequent enzymatic chain elongation and sulfation led to the successful synthesis of CSPG glycopeptides. The CS dodecasaccharide glycopeptide was the longest homogeneous CS glycopeptide synthesized to date. The enzymatic synthesis was much more efficient than the chemical synthesis of the corresponding CS glycopeptides, which could reduce the total number of synthetic steps by 80 %. The structures of the CS glycopeptides were confirmed by mass spectrometry analysis and NMR studies. In addition, the interactions between the CS glycopeptides and cathepsin G were studied. The sulfation of glycan chain was found to be important for binding with cathepsin G. Peach is one of the popular and economically important fruit crops in China. Peach cultivation is hampered due to attacks of anthracnose disease, causing significant economic losses. Colletotrichum fructicola and Colletotrichum siamense belong to the Colletotrichum gloeosporioides species complex and are considered major pathogens of peach anthracnose. Application of different groups of fungicides is a routine approach for controlling this disease. However, fungicide resistance is a significant drawback in managing peach anthracnose nowadays. In this study, 39 isolates of C. fructicola and 41 isolates of C. siamense were collected from different locations in various provinces in China. The sensitivity of C. fructicola and C. siamense to some commonly used fungicides, i.e., carbendazim, iprodione, fluopyram, and propiconazole, was determined. All the isolates of C. fructicola collected from Guangdong province showed high resistance to carbendazim, whereas isolates collected from Guizhou province were sensitive. In C. siamense, isolates collected from Hebei province showed moderate resistance, while those from Shandong province were sensitive to carbendazim. On the other hand, all the isolates of C. fructicola and C. siamense showed high resistance to the dicarboximide (DCF) fungicide iprodione and succinate dehydrogenase inhibitor (SDHI) fungicide fluopyram. However, they are all sensitive to the demethylation inhibitor (DMI) fungicide propiconazole. Positive cross-resistance was observed between carbendazim and benomyl as they are members of the same methyl benzimidazole carbamate (MBC) group. While no correlation of sensitivity was observed between different groups of fungicides. No significant differences were found in each fitness parameter between carbendazim-resistant and sensitive isolates in both species. Molecular characterization of the β-tubulin 2 (TUB2) gene revealed that in C. fructicola, the E198A point mutation was the determinant for the high resistance to carbendazim, while the F200Y point mutation was linked with the moderate resistance to carbendazim in C. siamense. Lenvatinib is a multikinase inhibitor that suppresses vascular endothelial growth factor receptor (VEGFR), fibroblast growth factor receptor (FGFR), platelet-derived growth factor receptor α (PDGFRα), as well as the proto-oncogenes RET and KIT. Lenvatinib has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the first-line treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) due to its superior efficacy when compared to sorafenib. Unfortunately, the development of drug resistance to lenvatinib is becoming increasingly common. Thus, there is an urgent need to identify the factors that lead to drug resistance and ways to mitigate it. Coupling by metal-carbene transfer enables the formation of several different bonds at the carbenoid site, enabling prochiral C sp 3 centers that are fundamental three-dimensional substructures for medicines to be forged with increased efficiency. However, strategies using bulk chemicals are rare because of the challenge of breaking two unactivated geminal bonds. Herein, we report the reactivity of ethers to form metal-carbene intermediate by cleavage of α-C sp 3 -H/C sp 3 -O bonds, which achieve selective coupling with arylmagnesium bromides and chlorosilanes. These couplings are catalysed by cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbene-chromium complex and enable the one-step formation of 1,n-arylsilyl alcohols and α-arylated silanes. Mechanistic studies indicate that the in-situ formed low-valent Cr might react with iodobenzene to form phenyl radical species, which abstracts the α-H atom of ether in giving α-oxy radical. Background: An enduringly stable tip graft is the key to achieve successful rhinoplasty cases. However, the intrinsic nature of rib graft warping renders major unpredictability for the long-term outcome. The objective of this study was to detail and validate the use of a radix graft design that is characterized by the dual curved surfaces and beveled margin, which consequently renders a shape similar to a saddle., Methods: Twenty-three female patients, ranging in age from 22 to 31 years, completed the study. In all cases, the saddle-shaped radix graft was applied as the essential element for enhancing radix region profile. The complications that arose were collected retrospectively. Three-dimensional stereophotogrammetric evaluations of patients were performed. Anthropometric points were analyzed in a blinded fashion. Outcome variables were tip projection, nasal length, radix height, and the radius of curvature., Results: Postoperative analysis suggested significant improvement on the aesthetics of the radix region over time, evidenced by the significant increase of radix height (4.33 ± 1.21 mm versus 7.08 ± 1.00 mm), and the reduction of radius of curvature at nasofrontal break over the long term (22.63 ± 2.24 mm versus 13.94 ± 0.98 mm). Other postoperative evaluations, including radix height, tip projection, and nasal length, had significant improvement., Conclusions: The saddle-shaped radix graft effectively augments the radix area and creates an aesthetically pleasant nasofrontal break without causing the elevated radix deformity. Bone age assessment (BAA) is crucial in various fields, including legal proceedings, athletic competitions, and clinical medicine. However, the use of X-ray methods for age estimation without medical indication is subject to ethical debate, especially in forensic and athletic fields. The application of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with non-ionizing radiation can overcome this limitation in BAA. This study aimed to compare the application value of several MRI modalities of proximal humeral in BAA. A total of 468 patients with shoulder MRIs were retrospectively collected from a Chinese Han population aged 12-30 years (259 males and 209 females) for training and testing, including T 1 weighted MRI (T 1 WI), T 2 weighted MRI (T 2 WI), and Proton density weighted MRI (PDWI). Optimal regression models were established for age estimation, yielding mean absolute error (MAE) values below 2.0 years. The MAE values of T 1 WI were the lowest, with 1.700 years in males and 1.798 years in females. The area under the curve (AUC) and accuracy values of different MRI modalities of 16-year and 18-year thresholds were all around 0.9. For the 18-year threshold, T 1 WI outperformed T 2 WI and PDWI. In conclusion, the three MRI modalities of the proximal humerus can serve as reliable indicators for age assessment, while the T 1 WI performed better in age assessment and classification., (© 2024. In the terahertz (THz) band, modulation research has become a focal point, with precise control of the phase shift of THz waves playing a pivotal role. In this study, we investigate the optical control of THz phase shift modulation in a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-vanadium dioxide (VO 2 ) flexible material using THz time-domain spectroscopy. Under the influence of an 808-nm continuous wave (CW) laser with power densities ranging from 0 to 2.74 W/cm 2 , the PDMS-VO 2 flexible material exhibits significant phase shift modulation in the frequency range of 0.2 to 1.0 THz. The maximum optical-pumping phase shift reaches 0.27π rad at 1.0 THz in a composite material with a VO 2 mass fraction of 5% and a thickness of 360 µm, and the amplitude transmittance from 0.2 THz to 1.0 THz exceeds 70%. Furthermore, the composite material exhibits good stability under at least 640 switching cycle times, as confirmed through repeatability tests. The proposed composite devices offer a new approach for more flexible phase shift modulation owing to the flexibility of the composite material and the non-contact and precise modulation of light control. Additionally, the stress-adjustable characteristics of flexible materials make them highly suitable for use in wearable THz modulators, highlighting their significant application potential.

The bacterial wilt pathogen Ralstonia pseudosolanacearum (Rps) colonizes plant xylem vessels and blocks the flow of xylem sap by its biofilm (comprising of bacterial cells and extracellular material), resulting in devastating wilt disease across many economically important host plants including tomatoes. The technical challenges of imaging the xylem environment, along with the use of artificial cell culture plates and media in existing in vitro systems, limit the understanding of Rps biofilm formation and its infection dynamics. In this study, we designed and built a microfluidic system that mimicked the physical and chemical conditions of the tomato xylem vessels, and allowed us to dissect Rps responses to different xylem-like conditions. The system, incorporating functional surface coatings of carboxymethyl cellulose-dopamine, provided a bioactive environment that significantly enhanced Rps attachment and biofilm formation in the presence of tomato xylem sap. Using computational approaches, we confirmed that Rps experienced linear increasing drag forces in xylem-mimicking channels at higher flow rates. Consistently, attachment and biofilm assays conducted in our microfluidic system revealed that both seeding time and flow rates were critical for bacterial adhesion to surface and biofilm formation inside the channels. Currently, coastal sandy soils face issues such as insufficient foundation strength, which has become one of the crucial factors constraining urban development. Geotechnical engineering, as a traditional discipline, breaks down disciplinary barriers, promotes interdisciplinary integration, and realizes the green ecological and low-carbon development of geotechnical engineering, which is highly important. Based on the "dual carbon" concept advocating a green and environmentally friendly lifestyle, Bacillus spores were utilized to induce calcium carbonate precipitation technology (MICP) to solidify coastal sandy soils, leveraging the rough-surface and low-permeability characteristics of silty soil. The mechanical-strength variations in the samples were explored through experiments, such as calcium carbonate generation rate tests, non-consolidated undrained triaxial shear tests, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) experiments, to investigate the MICP solidification mechanism. The results indicate that by incorporating silty soil into sandy soil for MICP solidification, the calcium carbonate generation rates of the samples were significantly increased. With the increase in the silty-soil content, the enhancement range was 0.58-3.62%, with the maximum calcium carbonate generation rate occurring at a 5% content level. As the silty-soil content gradually increased from 1% to 5%, the peak deviator stress increased by 4.2-43.2%, enhancing the sample shear strength. Furthermore, the relationship between the internal-friction angle, cohesion, and shear strength further validates the enhancement of the shear strength. Silty soil plays roles in adsorption and physical filling during the MICP solidification process, reducing the inter-particle pores in sandy soil, increasing the compactness, providing adsorption sites, and enhancing the calcium carbonate generation rate, thereby improving the shear strength. Diquat (DQ), paraquat (PQ), glufosinate (GLU), and glyphosate (GLYP) are commonly used herbicides that have been confirmed to be toxic to humans. Rapid and accurate measurements of these toxicants in clinical practice are beneficial for the correct diagnosis and timely treatment of herbicide-poisoned patients. The present study aimed to establish an efficient, convenient, and reliable method to achieve the simultaneous quantification of DQ, PQ, GLU, and GLYP in human plasma using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) without using derivatization or ion-pairing reagents. DQ, PQ, GLU, and GLYP were extracted by the rapid protein precipitation and liquid-liquid extraction method and then separated and detected by LC-MS/MS. Subsequently, linearity, limit of detection (LOD), limit of quantification (LOQ), precision, accuracy, extraction recovery, matrix effect, dilution integrity, and stability were evaluated to validate the method based on the FDA criteria. Finally, the validated method was applied to real plasma samples collected from 166 Chinese patients with herbicide poisoning. The results showed satisfactory linearity with low LOD (1 ng/mL for DQ and PQ, 5 ng/mL for GLU, and 10 ng/mL for GLYP, respectively) and low LOQ (5 ng/mL for DQ and PQ, 25 ng/mL for GLU and GLYP, respectively). In addition, the precision, accuracy, extraction recovery, and stability of the method were acceptable. The matrix effect was not observed in the analyzed samples. Moreover, the developed method was successfully applied to determine the target compounds in real plasma samples. This study aimed to explore and develop data mining models for adult age estimation based on CT reconstruction images from the sternum. Maximum intensity projection (MIP) images of chest CT were retrospectively collected from a modern Chinese population, and data from 2700 patients (1349 males and 1351 females) aged 20 to 70 years were obtained. A staging technique within four indicators was applied. Several data mining models were established, and mean absolute error (MAE) was the primary comparison parameter. The intraobserver and interobserver agreement levels were good. Within internal validation, the optimal data mining model obtained the lowest MAE of 9.08 in males and 10.41 in females. For the external validation (N = 200), MAEs were 7.09 in males and 7.15 in females. In conclusion, the accuracy of our model for adult age estimation was among similar studies. Introduction: Rhinoplasty for caudal septal cartilage defects is a challenge due to the difficulty of fixation of the grafts., Objectives: This study presents an approach for correcting defects in caudal septal cartilage with the costal cartilaginous framework using a mortise-tenon technique., Methods: From May 2019 through May 2022, a retrospective analysis of patients with caudal septal cartilage defects underwent rhinoplasty using a mortise-tenon cartilaginous framework by a senior surgeon was performed. The surgical outcomes were evaluated both preoperatively and postoperatively., Results: This study involved 17 patients, ranging in age from 27 to 58 years. There were 22.4 months of follow-up on average. There was no long-term or short-term complication observed. The aesthetic outcome of all cases was satisfactory. The mean score for the patients of the perceptions of improvement in their noses was 8.11., Conclusion: Correction of caudal septal cartilage defects with this costal cartilaginous framework using the mortise-tenon technique is feasible and effective., Level of Evidence Iv: This journal requires that authors assign a level of evidence to each article. Bone age assessment (BAA) is a crucial task in clinical, forensic, and athletic fields. Since traditional age estimation methods are suffered from potential radiation damage, this study aimed to develop and evaluate a deep learning radiomics method based on multiparametric knee MRI for noninvasive and automatic BAA. This retrospective study enrolled 598 patients (age range,10.00-29.99 years) who underwent MR examinations of the knee joint (T1/T2*/PD-weighted imaging). Three-dimensional convolutional neural networks (3D CNNs) were trained to extract and fuse multimodal and multiscale MRI radiomic features for age estimation and compared to traditional machine learning models based on hand-crafted features. The age estimation error was greater in individuals aged 25-30 years; thus, this method may not be suitable for individuals over 25 years old. In the test set aged 10-25 years (n = 95), the 3D CNN (a fusion of T1WI, T2*WI, and PDWI) demonstrated the lowest mean absolute error of 1.32 ± 1.01 years, which is higher than that of other MRI modalities and the hand-crafted models. In the classification for 12-, 14-, 16-, and 18- year thresholds, accuracies and the areas under the ROC curves were all over 0.91 and 0.96, which is similar to the manual methods. Visualization of important features showed that 3D CNN estimated age by focusing on the epiphyseal plates. The deep learning radiomics method enables non-invasive and automated BAA from multimodal knee MR images. Objectives: To establish age estimation models of northern Chinese Han adults using cranial suture images obtained by CT and multiplanar reformation (MPR), and to explore the applicability of cranial suture closure rule in age estimation of northern Chinese Han population., Methods: The head CT samples of 132 northern Chinese Han adults aged 29-80 years were retrospectively collected. Volume reconstruction (VR) and MPR were performed on the skull, and 160 cranial suture tomography images were generated for each sample. Then the MPR images of cranial sutures were scored according to the closure grading criteria, and the mean closure grades of sagittal suture, coronal sutures (both left and right) and lambdoid sutures (both left and right) were calculated respectively. Finally taking the above grades as independent variables, the linear regression model and four machine learning models for age estimation (gradient boosting regression, support vector regression, decision tree regression and Bayesian ridge regression) were established for northern Chinese Han adults age estimation. The accuracy of each model was evaluated., Results: Each cranial suture closure grade was positively correlated with age and the correlation of sagittal suture was the highest. All four machine learning models had higher age estimation accuracy than linear regression model. The support vector regression model had the highest accuracy among the machine learning models with a mean absolute error of 9.542 years., Conclusions: The combination of skull CT-MPR and machine learning model can be used for age estimation in northern Chinese Han adults, but it is still necessary to combine with other adult age estimation indicators in forensic practice.

Dental age estimation is a crucial aspect and one of the ways to accomplish forensic age estimation, and imaging technology is an important technique for dental age estimation. In recent years, some studies have preliminarily confirmed the feasibility of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in evaluating dental development, providing a new perspective and possibility for the evaluation of dental development, suggesting that MRI is expected to be a safer and more accurate tool for dental age estimation. However, further research is essential to verify its accuracy and feasibility. This article reviews the current state, challenges and limitations of MRI in dental development and age estimation, offering reference for the research of dental age assessment based on MRI technology.

Background: Because of its unique advantages, frontal expansion has become a common tool for Asian nasal reconstruction, but it has the limitations of prolonging the duration and pain in the expansion area. Based on the fact that the denervation effect of botulinum toxin type A (BTX-A) has been widely used in the reconstruction of superficial organs, we hypothesized that BTX-A would shorten the length of nasal reconstruction sequence and alleviate the discomfort of patients., Methods: A comparative retrospective study was conducted of consecutive patients underwent sequential treatment of nasal reconstruction between June 2010 and July 2012. Data on demographics, BTX-A injection plan and expansion duration were collected and analyzed. Phased pain intensity outcomes were evaluated by visual analogue scale (VAS). Photographs were collected during the follow-up period., Results: Thirty patients were enrolled in the study; 15 (50%) with and 15 (50%) without BTX-A pre-injection. Demographic data were homogeneous. The duration of the observation group (BTX-A pretreated) (133.87 ± 13.64 days) was significantly shortened versus the control group (164.27 ± 14.08 days, P<0.001). At the initial stage, no significant difference was found in the VAS scores (P=0.64). At the medium stage, the VAS score of the observation group (2.07 ± 0.80) was significantly lower than the control group (3.00 ± 0.53, P<0.01). Due to the prevalence of anterior maxilla dysplasia in Asian population, paranasal concavity is a common accompaniment to low nose, but its impact on facial harmonization is often underestimated. A retrospective comparative study was conducted on patients diagnosed as low nose with paranasal concavity between June 2017 and June 2021, with a total of 56 patients followed up successfully. The control and observation groups were established according to whether the paranasal augmentation was performed. Demographic data were collected. Cosmetic enhancement was quantitatively evaluated by sagittal planimetry, establishing related anatomical landmarks and measuring columella base prominence (CBP) and alar base prominence (ABP). Subjective evaluation concluded the patient-reported satisfaction (FACE-Q-Rhinoplasty Module and Facial Appearance Module) and the third-party physician assessment (Global Aesthetic Improvement Scale, GAIS).Significant improvements in CBP and ABP were reported both in the control and the observation group ( p  < 0.01). In postoperative intergroup comparisons, the observation group was superior to the control group regarding ABP values (2.5 ± 0.75 degrees, p  < 0.01), FACE-Q-Facial scores (7.49 ± 3.70, p  < 0.05), and GAIS scores ( p  < 0.05). However, no statistical difference was found in CBP values and FACE-Q-Rhinoplasty scores. Paranasal augmentation-related complications included asymmetry of alar bases (6.9%) and facial or intraoral foreign body sensation (34.5%). This study affirmed that paranasal augmentation using diced costal cartilage in rhinoplasty is a safe procedure effective in remedying paranasal concavity and improving facial satisfaction. Polymer memristors represent a highly promising avenue for the advancement of next-generation computing systems. However, the intrinsic structural heterogeneity characteristic of most polymers often results in organic polymer memristors displaying erratic resistive switching phenomena, which in turn lead to diminished production yields and compromised reliability. In this study, a 2D conjugated polymer, named PBDTT-BPQTPA, is synthesized by integrating the coplanar bis(thiophene)-4,8-dihydrobenzo[1,2-b:4,5-b]dithiophene (BDTT) as an electron-donating unit with a quinoxaline derivative serving as an electron-accepting unit. The incorporation of triphenylamine groups at the quinoxaline termini significantly enhances the polymer's conjugation and planarity, thereby facilitating more efficient charge transport. The fabricated polymer memristor with the structure of Al/PBDTT-BPQTPA/ITO exhibits typical non-volatile resistive switching behavior under high voltage conditions, along with history-dependent memristive properties at lower voltages. The unique memristive behavior of the device enables the simulation of synaptic enhancement/inhibition, learning algorithms, and memory operations. Additionally, the memristor demonstrates its capability for executing logical operations and handling decimal calculations. The Yangtze finless porpoises (Neophocaena asiaeorientalis a.) are an endemic and critically endangered species in China. Intensive captive breeding is essential for understanding the biology of critically endangered species, especially their pregnancy characteristics, knowledge of which is crucial for effective breeding management. Urine metabolomics can reveal metabolic differences, arising from physiological changes across pregnancy stages. Therefore, we used the urinary metabolomic technology, to explore urinary metabolite changes in pregnant Yangtze finless porpoises. A total of 2281 metabolites were identified in all samples, which including organic acids and derivatives (24.45%), organoheterocyclic compounds (20.23%), benzenoids (18.05%), organic oxygen compounds (7.73%), and phenylpropanoids and polyketides (6.48%). There were 164, 387, and 522 metabolites demonstrating differential abundance during early pregnancy, mid pregnancy, and late pregnancy, respectively, from the levels observed in nonpregnancy. The levels of pregnenolone, 17α-hydroxyprogesterone, and tetrahydrocortisone were significantly higher during all pregnancy stages, indicating their important roles in fetal development. The differential metabolites between nonpregnancy and pregnancy were mainly associated with amino acid and carbohydrate metabolism. Moreover, metabolic activity varied across pregnancy stages; steroid hormone biosynthesis was predominant in early pregnancy, and amino acid biosynthesis and carbohydrate metabolism were predominant in mid pregnancy and late pregnancy, respectively. Our results provide new insights into metabolic characteristics in the Yangtze finless porpoises' urine during pregnancy, and indicate that the differential levels of urine metabolites can determine pregnancy in Yangtze finless porpoises, providing valuable information for the husbandry and management of pregnant Yangtze finless porpoises in captivity., (© The Author(s) 2024. The imaging quality of a rotational reflection high-speed tracking system is greatly affected by the optical characteristics of the reflector and the depth of field limitations of the imaging system, especially for tracking systems working in small distances. In order to improve the imaging quality, this paper focused on two factors that affect the imaging quality: double vision caused by the optical characteristics of reflectors and blurring caused by the depth of field of imaging systems. This paper quantified the impact of these two factors on imaging through theoretical analysis, proposed a method of changing the hardware position, and conducted a simulation and experiments. The results show that the proposed solution in this paper can effectively improve the imaging quality of the system. The content studied in this paper has certain significance in the field of high-speed tracking of rotating reflectors and can provide reference for relevant researchers.

Background: In East Asian individuals, the nasal bone already has sufficient height for an ideal dorsal profile, but the tip requires enhancement for a desired projection. Consequently, the gap between the intrinsic bony structure and the established nasal tip requires appropriate management. The options are either to reduce the keystone region to create a smooth bed for a conventional dorsal onlay graft or to preserve the original osseocartilaginous structures and then customize a supplementary graft. The aim of this study was to detail and validate the utilization of a relay graft, a transition graft that fills the structural gap between the upper dorsum and established tip graft. The proper application of this graft could prevent osteotomy and preserve the intrinsic dorsum., Methods: Relay grafts were applied during rib-based rhinoplasty in East Asian patients. Three-dimensional stereophotogrammetric evaluations of the patients were performed. Anthropometric points were analyzed in a blinded fashion. Outcome variables were tip projection improvement, radix elevation, and the angulation of kyphion and pronasale., Results: Fifteen female patients, ranging in age from 21 to 40 years (average 24.5 years), were included. In all cases, the relay graft was applied as one essential element for filling the structural gap. No crooked dorsal profile or visible graft was noted in all cases. Fifteen patients completed the pre- and postoperative stereophotogrammetric study. Postoperative analysis showed great improvement of tip position as well as a slight elevation of the radix, evidenced by the consistent change of kyphion/pronasale angulation and sellion elevation., Conclusions: The relay graft effectively mitigates the necessity of a disruptive dorsal reduction. The role of KIAA0040 role in glioma development is not yet understood despite its connection to nervous system diseases. In this study, KIAA0040 expression levels were evaluated using qRT-PCR, WB and IHC, and functional assays were conducted to assess its impact on glioma progression, along with animal experiments. Moreover, WB was used to examine the impact of KIAA0040 on the JAK2/STAT3 signalling pathway. Our study found that KIAA0040 was increased in glioma and linked to tumour grade and poor clinical outcomes, serving as an independent prognostic factor. Functional assays showed that KIAA0040 enhances glioma growth, migration and invasion by activating the JAK2/STAT3 pathway. Of course, KIAA0040 enhances glioma growth by preventing tumour cell death and promoting cell cycle advancement. Adult age estimation is one of the most challenging problems in forensic science and physical anthropology. In this study, we aimed to develop and evaluate machine learning (ML) methods based on the modified Gustafson's criteria for dental age estimation. In this retrospective study, a total of 851 orthopantomograms were collected from patients aged 15 to 40 years old. The secondary dentin formation (SE), periodontal recession (PE), and attrition (AT) of four mandibular premolars were analyzed according to the modified Gustafson's criteria. Ten ML models were generated and compared for age estimation. The partial least squares regressor outperformed other models in males with a mean absolute error (MAE) of 4.151 years. The support vector regressor (MAE = 3.806 years) showed good performance in females. The accuracy of ML models is better than the single-tooth model provided in the previous studies (MAE = 4.747 years in males and MAE = 4.957 years in females). The Shapley additive explanations method was used to reveal the importance of the 12 features in ML models and found that AT and PE are the most influential in age estimation. The findings suggest that the modified Gustafson method can be effectively employed for adult age estimation in the southwest Chinese population. Euglena gracilis is a unicellular eukaryote between animal and plant cells, which is widely distributed in nature. E . gracilis has both plant and animal characteristics, and can grow photoautotrophically, heterotrophically and mixotrophically. E . gracilis also features on abundant and various cellular composition. Recently, extensive researches on unique cellular components of E . gracilis have revealed its application in the field of medicine, food, and feedstuff, in terms of improving immunity, fighting inflammation, and lowering uric acid levels. The application prospects of paramylon in biomedical area were also discovered. As food ingredients, food additives, feedstuffs and cosmetic ingredients, E . gracilis has been certified domestically and overseas. A series of products have been developed overseas, especially in Japan. However, the research and development of E . gracilis are still in its infancy in China, and there is huge space for development. At present, the research and potential application of cultivation and product functions of E . gracilis have been rarely reviewed. This review systematically examines both the domestic and abroad research of cultivation and production of E . gracilis , as well as the biological activity of E . gracilis powder and paramylon. The existing problems in the application, exploitation, and possible development direction of E . gracilis in the future are prospected. This review might be useful for establishing and optimizing large-scale and efficient heterotrophic technology, as well as developing related products of E . gracilis with specific functions.

Achieving highly efficient broadband absorption is an important research area in nanophotonics. In this paper, a novel method is proposed to design broadband near-perfect absorbers, consisting of a four-layer hemispherical concentric nanoshell array. The proposed nanostructure supports absorptivity exceeding 95% in the entire visible region, and the absorption bandwidth is determined by the interaction or 'hybridization' of the plasmons of the inner and outer metal-based nanoshells. Moreover, the designed absorber has wide-angle capability and is insensitive to polarization. Background: The tissue expansion process brings changes in hemodynamics. Objective: To measure the change in vessel diameter, blood flow, and resistance in the blood vessels using ultrasound before, during, and after tissue expansion. Methods: Patients undergoing the embedment of a forehead expander from September 2021 to October 2022 were included. Hemodynamics parameters, including vessel diameter, blood flow velocity, and resistance index (RI) of the supraorbital artery (SOA), supratrochlear artery (STrA), and frontal branch of the superficial temporal artery (FBSTA), were measured with ultrasound before and 1, 2, 3, and 4 months after expansion. Results: Nine males and six females with ages ranging from 15 to 26 years (mean, 20 years) were included. After 4 months of expansion, the diameter of the STrA, SOA, and FBSTA increased significantly, the RI decreased significantly, and except the right SOA, peak systolic flow velocity increased significantly. Conclusion: The parameters of flap perfusion were significantly improved in the first 2 months of expansion and tended to stable values.

The medial clavicle epiphysis is a crucial indicator for bone age estimation (BAE) after hand maturation. This study aimed to develop machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) models for BAE based on medial clavicle CT images and evaluate the performance on normal and variant clavicles. This study retrospectively collected 1049 patients (mean± SD: 22.50±4.34 years) and split them into normal training and test sets, and variant training and test sets. An additional 53 variant clavicles were incorporated into the variant test set. The development stages of normal MCE were used to build a linear model and support vector machine (SVM) for BAE. The CT slices of MCE were automatically segmented and used to train DL models for automated BAE. Comparisons were performed by linear versus ML versus DL, and normal versus variant clavicles. Mean absolute error (MAE) and classification accuracy was the primary parameter of comparison. For BAE, the SVM had the best MAE of 1.73 years, followed by the commonly-used CNNs (1.77-1.93 years), the linear model (1.94 years), and the hybrid neural network CoAt Net (2.01 years). In DL models, SE Net 18 was the best-performing DL model with similar results to SVM in the normal test set and achieved an MAE of 2.08 years in the external variant test. For age classification, all the models exhibit superior performance in the classification of 18-, 20-, 21-, and 22-year thresholds with limited value in the 16-year threshold. Background: There has been no previous study on the availability of different glucocorticoid varieties used in the multimodal cocktail for harvesting autologous costal cartilage. This randomized controlled trial (RCT) was to compare the significance and complications of betamethasone and triamcinolone acetonide as a component of the cocktail for harvesting costal cartilage in patients., Materials and Methods: The patients were randomized to two groups. The group A used multimodal cocktail: ropivacaine, parecoxib sodium, epinephrine, and triamcinolone acetonide; group B used multimodal cocktail: ropivacaine, parecoxib sodium, epinephrine, and betamethasone. The primary outcomes were chest pain after surgery evaluated with a visual analog scale (VAS). The secondary outcomes evaluated the quality of recovery. The tertiary outcomes included rescue analgesic consumption, the first feeding time and the time to the first ambulation, and duration of hospital stay., Results: The VAS scores between the two groups was not considered clinically significant, but the groups achieved a VAS score of 3 or less. However, the time until the first rescue analgesia and the number were significantly longer and smaller for group A. Additionally, there were no significant differences between the two groups in the duration of hospital stay, first feeding time, the quality of recovery, and the first ambulation time., Conclusion: Adding corticosteroids into the multimodal cocktails could improve pain relief after costal cartilage harvest. Background: Clinical trials of new drugs for tic disorders (TD) often fail to yield positive results. Placebo and nocebo responses play a vital role in interpreting the outcomes of randomized controlled trials (RCTs), yet these responses in RCTs of TD remain unexplored., Objective: The aim was to assess the magnitude of placebo and nocebo responses in RCTs of pharmacological interventions for TD and identify influencing factors., Methods: A systematic search of the Embase, Medline, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and PsycINFO databases was conducted. Eligible studies were RCTs that compared active pharmacological agents with placebos. Placebo response was defined as the change from baseline in TD symptom severity in the placebo group, and nocebo response as the proportion experiencing adverse events (AEs) in this group. Subgroup analysis and meta-regression were performed to explore modifying factors., Results: Twenty-four trials involving 2222 participants were included in this study. A substantial placebo response in TD symptom severity was identified, with a pooled effect size of -0.79 (95% confidence interval [CI] -0.99 to -0.59; I 2  = 67%). Forty-four percent (95% CI 27% to 63%; I 2  = 92%) of patients experienced AEs while taking inert pills. Sample size, study design, and randomization ratio were correlated with changes in placebo and nocebo responses., Conclusion: There were considerable placebo and nocebo responses in TD clinical trials. High-speed tracking technology has wide applications in the military and aerospace industry. However, existing approaches, such as camera arrays or Doppler radar systems, suffer from high cost and inconvenience. This paper reports a high-speed target tracking control system based on short-time rotational reflection imaging, specifically aimed at overcoming certain limitations. In the system we designed, a high-speed camera coupled with a rotating reflector is used to achieve reliable high-speed target tracking. This paper first introduces the working principle and mathematical model of the system, then analyzes the key technologies, including motor response delay time and rotational speed curve fitting, and, finally, verifies the feasibility of the system and the correctness of the theory based on a series of experiments. Experimental results demonstrated that our work is efficient and accurate in target tracking and image clarity. The developed system demonstrates significant potential for widespread use across military and aerospace sectors. Furthermore, the insights gained from our investigation into key technologies could act as a reference point for fellow researchers in related scientific areas.

Light is crucial in microalgae growth. However, dividing the microalgae growth region into light and dark regions has limitations. In this study, the light response of Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 was investigated to define four light regions (FLRs): light compensation region, light limitation region, light saturation region, and photoinhibition region. The proportions of cells' residence time in the FLRs and the number of times cells (NTC) passed through the FLRs in photobioreactors were calculated by using MATLAB. Based on the FLRs and NTC passed through the FLRs, a growth model was established by using artificial neural network (ANN).The ANN model had a validation R 2 value of 0.97, which was 76.36% higher than the model based on light-dark regions. In addition to providing extra flap size, the tissue expansion process also brings changes in flap thickness. This study aims to identify the changes in the forehead flap thickness during the tissue expansion period. Patients undergoing forehead expander embedment from September 2021 to September 2022 were included. The thickness of the forehead skin and subcutaneous tissue were measured with ultrasound before and 1, 2, 3, and 4 months after expansion. Twelve patients were included. The average expansion period was 4.6 months, and the mean expansion volume was 657.1 mL. The thickness of skin and subcutaneous tissue in the central forehead changed from 1.09 ± 0.06 to 0.63 ± 0.05 mm and from 2.53 ± 0.25 to 0.71 ± 0.09 mm, respectively. In the left frontotemporal region, skin and subcutaneous tissue thickness changed from 1.03 ± 0.05 to 0.52 ± 0.05 mm and 2.02 ± 0.21 to 0.62 ± 0.08 mm. On the right side, skin and subcutaneous tissue thickness changed from 1.01 ± 0.05 to 0.50 ± 0.04 mm and 2.06 ± 0.21 to 0.50 ± 0.05 mm. This study measured the dynamic changes in the thickness of the forehead flap during expansion. The thickness of the forehead flap decreased the fastest in the first 2 months of expansion, and the changes in skin and subcutaneous thickness slowed down in the third and fourth months and tended to a minimum value. More than half of the patients with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have gastrointestinal (GI) comorbidities, such as constipation, indigestion, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Recent studies suggest prescribing probiotics and prebiotics in ASD could relieve GI disturbances and behavioral issues. This narrative review generalizes the research progress on probiotic and prebiotic therapies for ASD over the past 5 years and further discusses the underlying mechanisms of interaction between probiotics and prebiotics with ASD. Preliminary evidence has demonstrated the beneficial effects of probiotics and prebiotics on GI problems, autism-related behavioral disorders, and gut microbiome composition; the mechanism of probiotics and prebiotics in the treatment of ASD is mediated through inflammatory signaling pathways, metabolic pathways, neuronal signaling pathways, and the involvement of the vagus nerve. However, the results are inconclusive and mainly generated by animal experiments. Objective: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of a hospital-made resuscitation pack, a Chinese medicinal herbal compound formula designed to enhance recovery in post-bronchoscopy patients., Methods: In this randomized, single-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial, eligible patients were randomly assigned 1:1 to either the treatment or control groups. The patients in the treatment group applied the resuscitation pack, which contained aromatic compounded Chinese herbs. The patients in the control group applied a hospital-made, single herb placebo pack. Packs were placed on the Tiantu (CV 22) acupuncture point for 4 h as soon as the bronchoscopy finished. Efficacy indicators, such as recovery time, patients' symptoms including nausea and dizziness, and adverse events (AEs) were observed and compared. The outcome indices were evaluated at baseline, 1 and 24 h after the bronchoscopy. Subgroup analysis was further performed by patients' age and depth of sedation., Results: When applying generalized estimating equations (GEE) to evaluate the intensity of post-bronchoscopy nausea and vomiting, the intensity was lower in the treatment group (163 cases) compared with the control group (162 cases; 95% CI: 0.004, 0.099, P=0.03]. Also, significantly lower intensity of nausea was observed in the 60-70 years of age subgroup (95% CI: 0.029, 0.169, P=0.006) and deep sedation subgroup (95% CI: 0.002, 0.124; P=0.04). There was no significant difference in dizziness between two groups by GEE (95% CI: -0.134, 0.297; P=0.459). In addition, no serious AEs were observed in either group., Conclusions: Our study found that the resuscitation pack markedly improved patients' symptoms by reducing nausea and vomiting after bronchoscopy without AEs, compared with placebo in the perioperative period. Background: The application of the expanded forehead flap in nasal reconstruction has the advantage of being able to provide a sufficient amount of flap and can provide good aesthetic results. For an expanded forehead flap to survive, there must be adequate arterial supply and venous return. Despite this, limited studies have been conducted on preoperative vascular mapping and the design of the expanded forehead flap for nasal reconstruction. In this article, the authors present a technique of hand-held Doppler detection with light illumination for vascular mapping., Patients and Methods: The study included patients who underwent total nasal reconstruction with expanded forehead flaps between May 2016 and April 2021. The design of the flap was based on the result of preoperative vascular detection by hand-held Doppler detection assisted by light illumination., Results: A total of 32 patients underwent total nasal reconstruction with an expanded forehead flap. The distal part of the flap became necrotic 1 week after the surgery in 2 patients. Following dressing changes and the administration of antibiotics, the distal flap in these patients survived well. No complications were reported in the long term., Conclusions: Hand-held Doppler detection combined with light illumination is a convenient and effective preoperative design method for nasal reconstruction with an expanded forehead flap. Donor-acceptor-type conjugated polymers are widely used in memristors due to their unique push-pull electron structures and charge transfer mechanisms. However, the inherently inhomogeneous microstructure of polymer films and their low crystallinity produce randomness that destabilizes formed conductive channels, giving polymer-based memristors unstable switching behavior. In this contribution, we prepared a synaptic device based on PM6-MoS 2 QD (molybdenum disulfide quantum dot) nanocomposites. In the composites, MoS 2 QDs provided the active centers for forming conductive channels via electron trapping and detrapping. They also controlled the directional formation of conductive channels between PM6 and MoS 2 QDs, reducing randomness and giving devices a narrow switching voltage range and cycling longevity. The device exhibited continuous multistage conductance states under a direct current voltage sweep and simulated a variety of synaptic functions, including long-term potentiation, long-term depression, short-term potentiation, short-term depression, paired-pulse facilitation, spiking-rate-dependent plasticity, and "learning experience" behavior. The memristor could also perform arithmetic, including "counting" and "subtraction" operations. This work provides a new approach to improving the performance of memristors for neuromorphic computing.

The dynamics of the extracellular matrix (ECM) influences stem cell differentiation and morphogenesis into complex lymphatic networks. While dynamic hydrogels with stress relaxation properties have been developed, many require detailed chemical processing to tune viscoelasticity, offering a limited opportunity for in situ and spatiotemporal control. Here, a hyaluronic acid (HA) hydrogel is reported with viscoelasticity that is controlled and spatially tunable using UV light to direct the extent of supramolecular and covalent cross-linking interactions. This is achieved using UV-mediated photodimerization of a supramolecular ternary complex of pendant trans -Brooker's Merocyanine (BM) guests and a cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]) macrocycle. The UV-mediated conversion of this supramolecular complex to its covalent photodimerized form is catalyzed by CB[8], offering a user-directed route to spatially control hydrogel dynamics in combination with orthogonal photopatterning by UV irradiation through photomasks. This material thus achieves spatial heterogeneity of substrate dynamics, recreating features of native ECM without the need for additional chemical reagents. Moreover, these dynamic hydrogels afford spatial control of substrate mechanics to direct human lymphatic endothelial cells (LECs) to form lymphatic cord-like structures (CLS). Specifically, cells cultured on viscoelastic supramolecular hydrogels have enhanced formation of CLS, arising from increased expression of key lymphatic markers, such as LYVE-1 , Podoplanin , and Prox1 , compared to static elastic hydrogels prepared from fully covalent cross-linking. Viscoelastic hydrogels promote lymphatic CLS formation through the expression of Nrp2 , VEGFR2 , and VEGFR3 to enhance the VEGF-C stimulation. Overall, viscoelastic supramolecular hydrogels offer a facile route to spatially control lymphatic CLS formation, providing a tool for future studies of basic lymphatic biology and tissue engineering applications.

In this work, a novel semisupervised framework is proposed to tackle the small-sample problem of dental-based human identification (DHI), achieving enhanced performance via a "classifying while generating" paradigm. A generative adversarial network (GAN), called the DHI-GAN, is presented to implement this idea, in which an extra classifier is also dedicatedly proposed to achieve an efficient training procedure. Considering the complex specificities of this problem, except for the noise input of the generator, an identity embedding-guided architecture is proposed to retain informative features for each individual. A parallel spatial and channel fusion attention block is innovatively designed to encourage the model to learn discriminative and informative features by focusing on different regional details and abstract concepts. The attention block is also widely applied to the overall classifier to learn identity-dependent information. A loss combination of the ArcFace and focal loss is utilized to address the small-sample problem. Two parameters are proposed to control the generated samples that are fed into the classifier during the optimization procedure. The proposed DHI-GAN framework is finally validated on a real-world dataset, and the experimental results demonstrate that it outperforms other baselines, achieving a 92.5% top-one accuracy rate. Most importantly, the proposed GAN-based semisupervised training strategy is able to reduce the required number of training samples (individuals) and can also be incorporated into other classification models. Lymphatic endothelial cells (LECs) play a critical role in the formation and maintenance of the lymphatic vasculature, which is essential for the immune system, fluid balance, and tissue repair. However, LECs are often difficult to study in vivo and in vitro models that accurately mimic their behaviors and phenotypes are limited. In particular, LECs have been shown to lose their lymphatic markers over time while being cultured in vitro , which reflect their plasticity and heterogeneity in vivo . Since LECs uniquely express lymphatic vessel endothelial hyaluronan receptor-1 ( LYVE-1 ), we hypothesized that surface coating with hyaluronic acid (HA) can preserve LEC phenotypes and functionalities. Dopamine conjugated hyaluronic acid (HA-DP) was synthesized with 42% degree of substitution to enable surface modification and conjugation onto standard tissue culture plates. Compared to fibronectin coating and tissue culture plate controls, surface coating with HA-DP was able to preserve lymphatic markers, such as prospero homeobox protein 1 ( Prox1 ), podoplanin ( PDPN ), and LYVE-1 over several passages in vitro . LECs cultured on HA-DP expressed lower levels of focal adhesion kinase (FAK) and YAP/TAZ, which may be responsible for the maintenance of the lymphatic characteristics. Collectively, the HA-DP coating may provide a novel method for culturing human LECs in vitro toward more representative studies in basic lymphatic biology and lymphatic regeneration.

Paenibacillus polymyxa is an important biocontrol bacterium. The combination of propidium monoazide (PMA) and quantitative polymerase chain reactionq (qPCR) has proven effective in quantifying live bacteria from various microorganisms. The objective was to create a PMA-qPCR assay to precisely and consistently measure the number of living bacteria of biocontrol P. polymyxa. The primers were designed for the spo0A gene of P. polymyxa HY96-2. The optimal conditions for treating the target strain with PMA were a PMA concentration of 15 μg/mL, an incubation time of 5 min, and an exposure time of 10 min. The PMA-qPCR method had a limit of quantification (LOQ) of 1.0 × 103 CFU/mL for measuring the amount of viable P. polymyxa bacteria. The PMA-qPCR method is more sensitive than the qPCR method in detecting viable bacteria in the mixtures of viable and dead bacteria. The accuracy and reproducibility of quantifying viable P. polymyxa bacteria using the PMA-qPCR method were higher compared to the plate count method., (© The Author(s) 2023. Background: A variety of techniques for alar base modification have been described in the literature. Limitations of these techniques include scars, recurrence, asymmetry, etc. An incorrect excision of the lateral alar wall can result in a tear-drop or Q-shaped deformity., Objectives: In this study, a modified V-Y advancement flap will be introduced that will avoid the complications discussed above as well as adjust the positional relationship between the nasal alar and the columella using this technique. In addition, this method is reversible; once the nostril is narrow due to excessive advancement of the flap, the reverse V-Y advancement method can be used to enlarge the nostril., Methods: In this study, a retrospective review of wide nasal bases in the past 3 years was conducted. A blind analysis of anthropometric points was conducted. There were 3 outcome variables: the width of the alar base, the width of the flare, and the distance between the alar base and columellar base., Results: The alar base was reduced with a modified V-Y advancement flap on 65 female patients ranging from 18 to 45 years of age. In 10 cases, an "Inclined Y-arm flap" was used to narrow alar bases and adjust columella-alar positions. In the remaining cases, a "Horizontal Y-arm flap" was performed to narrow the simple nasal alar width. In all cases, the nasal base was reduced without distortion. In the postoperative period, all the effects were seen to persist for a long time, and patients were generally satisfied with the results of the procedure., Conclusion: By using this modified V-Y advancement flap technique, the incision can be concealed as thoroughly as possible, thereby avoiding "tear-drop" or "Q" deformities as well as narrowing the nasal alar effectively. Objective: Adult age estimation (AAE) is a challenging task. Deep learning (DL) could be a supportive tool. This study aimed to develop DL models for AAE based on CT images and compare their performance to the manual visual scoring method., Methods: Chest CT were reconstructed using volume rendering (VR) and maximum intensity projection (MIP) separately. Retrospective data of 2500 patients aged 20.00-69.99 years were obtained. The cohort was split into training (80%) and validation (20%) sets. Additional independent data from 200 patients were used as the test set and external validation set. Different modality DL models were developed accordingly. Comparisons were hierarchically performed by VR versus MIP, single-modality versus multi-modality, and DL versus manual method. Mean absolute error (MAE) was the primary parameter of comparison., Results: A total of 2700 patients (mean age = 45.24 years ± 14.03 [SD]) were evaluated. Of single-modality models, MAEs yielded by VR were lower than MIP. Multi-modality models generally yielded lower MAEs than the optimal single-modality model. The best-performing multi-modality model obtained the lowest MAEs of 3.78 in males and 3.40 in females. On the test set, DL achieved MAEs of 3.78 in males and 3.92 in females, which were far better than the MAEs of 8.90 and 6.42 respectively, for the manual method. For the external validation, MAEs were 6.05 in males and 6.68 in females for DL, and 6.93 and 8.28 for the manual method., Conclusions: DL demonstrated better performance than the manual method in AAE based on CT reconstruction of the costal cartilage., Clinical Relevance Statement: Aging leads to diseases, functional performance deterioration, and both physical and physiological damage over time. Ingesting marine plastics is increasingly common in cetaceans, but little is known about their potential effects. Here, by utilizing 16S rRNA gene sequencing, we profiled the intestinal bacterial communities of a stranded Risso's dolphin (Grampus griseus) which died because of the ingestion of rubber gloves. In this study, we explored the potential relationships between starvation raised by plastic ingestion with the dolphin gut microbiota. Our results showed significant differences in bacterial diversity and composition among the different anatomical areas along the intestinal tract, which may be related to the intestinal emptying process under starvation. In addition, the intestinal bacterial composition of the Risso's dolphin showed both similarity and divergence to that of other toothed whales, suggesting potential roles of both host phylogeny and habitat shaping of the cetacean intestinal microbiome. Perhaps, the microbiota is reflecting a potentially disordered intestinal microbial profile caused by the ingestion of macro-plastics which led to starvation. Moreover, two operational taxonomic units (0.17% of the total reads) affiliated with Actinobacillus and Acinetobacter lwoffii were detected along the intestinal tract. These bacterial species may cause infections in immunocompromised dolphins which are malnourished. Silicon carbide (SiC) ceramics are widely used as structural materials for various applications. However, the extraordinarily high hardness, brittleness, low material removal rate, and severe tool wear of these materials significantly impact the performance of conventional mechanical processing techniques. In this study, we investigated the influence of different parameters on the material removal rate, surface quality, and surface oxidation during the laser processing of SiC ceramic samples using a high-repetition-frequency femtosecond laser at a wavelength of 1030 nm. Additionally, an experimental investigation was conducted to analyze the effects of a burst mode on the material removal rate. Our results demonstrate that the surface oxidation, which significantly affects the material removal rate, can be effectively reduced by increasing the laser scanning speed and decreasing the laser scanning pitch. The material removal rate and surface quality are mainly affected by laser fluence. The optimal material removal rate is obtained with a laser fluence of 0.4 J/cm 2 at a pulse width of 470 fs.
