Toxoplasma gondii is a ubiquitous protozoan parasite with a complex life cycle containing multiple developmental stages. The parasites have distinct gene expression patterns at different stages to enable stage specific life activities, but the underlying regulatory mechanisms are largely unknown. In this study, a nuclear complex is identified that controls the expression of developmentally regulated genes. This complex consists of the AP2 family transcription factor AP2XII-5, the epigenetic factors MORC and HDAC3, as well as a novel AP2XII-5 interacting protein 1 (AIP1) that stabilizes this complex. At the tachyzoite stage when the parasites proliferate rapidly by asexual endodyogeny, AP2XII-5 binds to the promoter regions of developmentally activated genes and recruits MORC and HDAC3 to suppress their expression. When sexual commitment and merozoite development are triggered, the abundance of AP2XII-5 decreases and its suppression on target genes is relieved. In contrast to MORC and HDAC3, which regulate Toxoplasma development but are also essential for tachyzoite growth, AP2XII-5 and AIP1 are dispensable for tachyzoite proliferation in vitro. These data suggest that while MORC and HDAC3 have broad regulatory activities, forming a complex with AP2XII-5 and AIP1 enables them to specifically regulate gene expression during development., (© 2024 The Author(s). Challenges in developing adsorbents with sufficient phosphate (P) adsorption capacity, selectivity, and regeneration properties remain to be addressed. Herein, a multi-functionalized high-capacity nanocellulose/alginate hydrogel (La-NCF/SA-PEI [La: lanthanum, NCF: nanocellulose fiber, SA: sodium alginate, PEI: polyethyleneimine]) was prepared through environmentally friendly methods. The La-NCF/SA-PEI hydrogel, featuring a 3D porous structure with interwoven functional groups (amino, quaternary ammonium, and lanthanum), demonstrated a maximum P adsorption capacity of 78.0 mg/g, exceeding most La-based hydrogel adsorbents. The kinetic and isotherm fitting results confirmed the multilayer chemisorption process. Comprehensive experimental results, instrumental analysis, and computational results revealed that the ammonium phosphate complex (NH 3 + -O-P) and the inner-sphere complex (La-O-P) formed by La(OH) 3 dominated the selective P adsorption process. Density-functional theory (DFT) was employed to calculate the bond length between phosphate and each component of the La-NCF/SA-PEI. The calculation results revealed the double-bridge adsorption between the N (apex) atom on La-NCF/SA-PEI and the O (apex) atomic site in phosphate, including electrostatic adsorption and two hydrogen bonds (bond lengths 1.001 and 1.008 Å) between the O of PO 4 3- and the H + of the protonated amino group. Except the remarkable P adsorption performance (both municipal sewage and aquaculture tail water), the La-NCF/SA-PEI hydrogel's high selectivity toward P, environmental compatibility, and easy separability from water underscore its significant potential for phosphate-contaminated water remediation. Moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) technology with diverse merits is efficient in treating various waste streams whereas their microbial functional properties and ecology still need in-depth investigation, especially in real wastewater treatment systems. Herein, a well-controlled MBBR treating municipal wastewater was established to investigate the long-term system performance and the underlying principles of community succession and assembly. The system successfully achieved ammonium, TN, and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal of 96.7 ± 2.2%, 75.2 ± 3.6%, and 90.3 ± 3.8%, respectively, under simplified operation and low energy consumption. The effluent TN concentrations achieved 6.2 ± 1.6 mg-N/L despite the influent fluctuations. Diverse functional denitrifiers, such as Denitratisoma, Thermomonas, and Flavobacterium, and the anammox bacteria Candidatus Brocadia successfully enriched in anoxic chamber biofilms. The nitrifiers Nitrosomonas (∼0.73%) and Nitrospira (∼14.0%) exhibited appreciable nitrification capacity in specialized aerobic chambers. Ecological null model and network analysis revealed that microbial community assembly was mainly regulated by niche-based deterministic processes and air diffusion in the aerobic chamber resulted in more intense and complex bacterial interactions. Environmental filters including influent substrate and operating conditions (e.g., reactor configuration, DO, and temperature) greatly shaped the microbial community structure and affected carbon and nitrogen metabolism. The positive ecological roles of influent microflora and functional redundancy in biofilm communities were believed to facilitate functional stability. The anammox process coupled with partial denitrification in a specialized chamber demonstrated positive application implications. The excessive amounts of phosphorus (P) discharged and usage have caused eutrophication and algal blooms, which seriously jeopardize the environment even the human health. In this study, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) served as carriers to develop a lanthanum-based sodium alginate hydrogel (La-CNT-COOH/SA) aimed at efficiently removing phosphate from wastewater. Characterization results confirmed successful deposition of La(OH) 3 nanoparticles onto CNT-COOH. The optimal adsorption efficiency of La-CNT-COOH/SA hydrogels occurred at pH 4, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 54.4 mg/g under an initial phosphate concentration of 60 mg/L. Batch experiments demonstrated that La-CNT-COOH/SA performed well across a favorable pH range and exhibited high tolerance to common coexisting ions during phosphate adsorption. Adsorption isotherms indicated a dominance of both physical and chemical mechanisms in phosphate removal by La-CNT-COOH/SA. At elevated phosphate concentrations, the adsorption process followed quasi-second-order kinetics, primarily driven by chemical adsorption. Multi-instrument characterization emphasized that the substantial loading of La(OH) 3 on CNT-COOH significantly contributed to adsorption, alongside crosslinked lanthanum ions on sodium alginate and abundant hydroxyl groups. Mechanisms of adsorption by La-CNT-COOH/SA encompassed electrostatic interactions, surface precipitation, and in-sphere complexation (La-O-P). In human life and production, excessive oily wastewaters containing detergents are produced and discharged, causing severe environmental pollution and water resource problems. A metal-organic framework (MOF)-based membrane is an economical and environmentally friendly tool for emulsion separation but is limited by a complex preparation process and poor flexibility. Herein, we developed a simple method to synthesize a MOF-based mixed-matrix membrane (MMM) by spray and fabricated the membrane on poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) fibers via postdeposition and in situ growth manners. The prepared ZIF-8/PVA MMMs have uniform distribution of ZIF-8 particles and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) on the PVDF fibers. PVA improved the adhesion between the ZIF-8 particles and between the MOF layer and PVDF fiber, endowing the separation membrane with high flexibility and bendability. The prepared ZIF-8/PVA membrane exhibited hydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity, which showed high separation efficiency and considerable water flux for emulsions, emulsion containing dye, and surfactant-stabilized emulsion. In addition, the fabricated ZIF-8/PVA/PVDF fibers exhibited good antifouling property and flexibility and can maintain stable separation efficiency after working several times and even under bending, demonstrating the stability and potentiality of the ZIF-8/PVA/PVDF fibers in practical applications. This work paves a new avenue for the synthesis and application of MOF-based MMMs.

Developing a facile strategy to synthesize free-standing defect-free metal-organic framework (MOF) membranes with high separation selectivity and good mechanical stability is very appealing but challenging. Herein, by confining the reaction of metal and ligand at the quasi-interface, a representative membrane composed of a continuous ZIF-8 layer and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) was fabricated. The continuous ZIF-8 layer endowed the membrane with high separation efficiency, while PVA acted as a filler to eliminate the defection, synergistically achieving high selective ion transport and good mechanical stability. The continuous defect-free ZIF-8/PVA membrane showed excellent separation performance of selective ion transport with high Li + permeance of 17.83 mol·m -2 ·h -1 as well as decent Li + /Mg 2+ and Li + /Ca 2+ selectivities of 24.60 and 244.58, respectively. The separation performance of the ZIF-8/PVA membrane remained stable after 10% strain, indicating its good mechanical stability. This work will promote the development of MOF-based membranes in practical applications.

Dynamic color-changing materials have attracted broad interest due to their widespread applications in visual sensing, dynamic color display, anticounterfeiting, and image encryption/decryption. In this work, we demonstrate a novel pH-responsive dynamic color-changing material based on a metal-insulator-metal (MIM) Fabry-Perot (FP) cavity with a pH-responsive poly( N , N -dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA) brush layer as the responsive insulating layer. The pH-responsive PDMAEMA brush undergoes protonation at a low pH value (pH < 6), which induces different swelling degrees in response to pH and thus refractive index and thickness change of the insulator layer of the MIM FP cavity. This leads to significant optical property changes in transmission and a distinguishable color change spanning the whole visible region by adjusting the pH value of the external environment. Due to the reversible conformational change of the PDMAEMA and the formation of covalent bonds between the PDMAEMA molecular chain and the Ag substrate, the MIM FP cavity exhibits stable performance and good reproducibility. This pH-responsive MIM FP cavity establishes a new way to modulate transmission color in the full visible region and exhibits a broad prospect of applications in dynamic color display, real-time environment monitoring, and information encryption and decryption.

Confronting the threat of environment uranium pollution, decades of research have yielded advanced and significant findings in uranium bioremediation, resulting in the accumulation of tremendous amount of high-quality literature. In this study, we analyzed over 10,000 uranium reduction-related papers published from 1990 to the present in the Web of Science based on bibliometrics, and revealed some critical information on knowledge structure, thematic evolution and additional attention. Methods including contribution comparison, co-occurrence and temporal evolution analysis are applied. The results of the distribution and impact analysis of authors, sources, and journals indicated that the United States is a leader in this field of research and China is on the rise. The top keywords remained stable, primarily focused on chemicals (uranium, iron, plutonium, nitrat, carbon), characters (divers, surfac, speciat), and microbiology (microbial commun, cytochrome, extracellular polymeric subst). Keywords related to new strains, reduction mechanisms and product characteristics demonstrated the strongest uptrend, while some keywords related to mechanism and performance were clearly emerging in the past 5 years. Furthermore, the evolution of the thematic progression can be categorized into three stages, commencing with the discovery of the enzymatic reduction of hexavalent uranium to tetravalent uranium, developing in the groundwater remediation process at uranium-contaminated sites, and delving into the research on microbial reduction mechanisms of uranium. For future research, enhancing the understanding of mechanisms, improving uranium removal performance, and exploring practical applications can be considered. Identification of key As mobilization processes in estuarine sediments is challenging due to the transitional hydrodynamic condition and the technical restriction of obtaining fine-scale results. Herein, high-resolution (μm to mm) and in situ profiling of As with associated elements (Fe, Mn, and S) by the diffusive gradients in thin-film (DGT) technique were applied and coupled with pore water and solid phase analysis as well as microbial high-throughput sequencing, to ascertain the driving mechanisms of As mobilization in the sediments of Pearl River Estuary (PRE). Significant diffusion fluxes of As from sediment to water were observed, particularly in the upper estuary. With the seaward increase of salinity, the driving mechanism of As mobilization gradually shifted from microbial-induced dissimilatory Fe reduction to saltwater-induced ion exchange. Correspondingly, the dominant Fe-reducing bacteria (FeRB) in sediments changed from the genera Clostridium&#95;sensu&#95;stricto&#95;1 and Bacillus to Ferrimonas and Deferribacter. The presence of dissolved sulfide in deeper sediments contributes to As removal through the formation of As-S precipitates as supported by theoretical calculations. Developing a facile strategy for constructing oriented mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) with uniformly dispersed and high-loading metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is a crucial scientific challenge in probing the enhanced capability and potential applications of MOF-polymer MMMs. Herein, a novel synchronous synthetic method for constructing oriented CuBDC/poly(m-phenylenediamine) (CuBDC/PmPD) MMM with uniform MOF dispersion at high loading at the air-solution interface via the dual function of metal ions is reported. The resulting MMM exhibits excellent separation performance in ion sieving and seawater desalination due to the structural integrity of the proposed membrane and the highly interconnected channels created through the oriented distribution of MOF in a polymer matrix. A new type of adsorbent, a Prussian blue analog-based copper-aluminum layered double hydroxide (PBA@CuAl-LDH), was successfully synthesized using a one-step method for the removal of radioactive Cs + from wastewater. The adsorption performance, characteristics and the underlying adsorption mechanism of PBA@CuAl-LDH were systematically examined. The results showed that PBA@CuAl-LDH exhibited excellent adsorption performance, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 109.2 mg g -1 . Over 85% of PBA@CuAl-LDH can be recycled, and the material exhibited only a 6.6% loss in adsorption performance. The adsorption process was well-fitted using the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Freundlich isotherm model, revealing the surface heterogeneity of the composite adsorbent. A molecular model of PBA@CuAl-LDH was constructed by combining density functional theory and multiple instrumental characterization techniques. Our results indicate that PBA crystals can be generated between layers and on the surface. Ion exchange was revealed as the main adsorption mechanism of Cs + by PBA@CuAl-LDH. Specifically, the interstitial spaces of the PBA crystals generated between the layers and on the surface played an important role in ion exchange. These findings provide concrete theoretical support for radioactive pollution control and have significant value in directing the fabrication of cesium removal materials and their future engineering application.

Importance: Sexual development is vital for the transmission, genetic hybridization, and population evolution of apicomplexan pathogens, which include several clinically relevant parasites, such as Plasmodium, Eimeria, and Toxoplasma gondii . Previous studies have demonstrated different morphological characteristics and division patterns between asexual and sexual stages of the parasites. However, the primary regulation is poorly understood. A transition from the asexual to the sexual stage is supposedly triggered/accompanied by rewiring of gene expression and controlled by transcription factors and chromatin modulators. Herein, we discovered a tachyzoite-specific transcriptional factor AP2XII-1, which represses the presexual development in the asexual tachyzoite stage of T. gondii . Conditional knockdown of AP2XII-1 perturbs tachyzoite proliferation by endodyogeny and drives a transition to a morphologically and transcriptionally distinct merozoite stage. The results also suggest a hierarchical transcriptional regulation of sexual development by AP2 factors and provide a path to culturing merozoites and controlling inter-host transmission of T. gondii ., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.

Coordination polymers are among the most favored active materials by researchers due to their broad application prospects. However, most of them are usually difficult to directly process into applicable devices because of their unsatisfied processability. One process of great concern for researchers is the in situ preparation of the coordination polymer on the applicable substrate, especially for the favored network substrates with good mechanical properties and 3D porous structure, which could provide obvious convenience and facilitation in the application process. Herein, we present an ultrafast and scalable thermal current-induced dewetting strategy to obtain uniform coordination polymer film in situ on network substrates, which could enable unprecedented convenience to obtain directly usable coordination polymer composites such as practical catalytic electrodes with excellent electrocatalytic performance. The proposed thermal current-induced dewetting method provides a highly adaptable and efficient practical production approach to integrate coordination polymer materials with network substrates and also provides new inspiration for understanding and applying the dewetting process on complex 3D network substrates.

In this study, sequencing batch operation was successfully combined with a pilot-scale anaerobic biofilm-modified anaerobic/aerobic membrane bioreactor to achieve anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) without inoculation of anammox aggregates for municipal wastewater treatment. Both total nitrogen and phosphorus removal efficiencies of the reactor reached up to 80% in the 250-day operation, with effluent concentrations of 4.95 mg-N/L and 0.48 mg-P/L. In situ enrichment of anammox bacteria with a maximum relative abundance of 7.86% was observed in the anaerobic biofilm, contributing to 18.81% of nitrogen removal, with denitrification being the primary removal pathway (38.41%). Denitrifying phosphorus removal (DPR) (40.54%) and aerobic phosphorus uptake (48.40%) played comparable roles in phosphorus removal. Metagenomic sequencing results showed that the biofilm contained significantly lower abundances of NO-reducing functional genes than the bulk sludge ( p < 0.01), favoring anammox catabolism in the former. Interactions between the anammox bacteria and flanking community were dominated by cooperation behaviors (e.g., nitrite supply, amino acids/vitamins exchange) in the anaerobic biofilm community network. Moreover, the hydrolytic/fermentative bacteria and endogenous heterotrophic bacteria ( Dechloromonas , Candidatus competibacter ) were substantially enriched under sequencing batch operation, which could alleviate the inhibition of anammox bacteria by complex organics. Overall, this study provides a feasible and promising strategy for substantially enriching anammox bacteria and achieving partial mainstream anammox as well as DPR.

Along with rapid urbanization and intensive human activities, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) pollution in the Pearl River Estuary (PRE) and its effects on the microbial community have attracted extensive attention. However, the potential and mechanism of microbial degradation of PAHs across water and sediment habitats remain obscure. Herein, the estuarine microbial community structure, function, assembly process and co-occurrence patterns impacted by PAHs were comprehensively analyzed using environmental DNA-based approaches. The contamination and distribution of PAHs were jointly affected by anthropogenic and natural factors. Some of the keystone taxa were identified as PAH-degrading bacteria (i.e., genera Defluviimonas, Mycobacterium, families 67-14, Rhodobacteraceae, Microbacteriaceae and order Gaiellales in water) or biomarkers (i.e., Gaiellales in sediment) that were significantly correlated with PAH levels. The proportion of deterministic process in the high PAH-polluted water (76%) was much higher than that in the low pollution area (7%), confirming the significant effect of PAHs on the microbial community assembly. In sediment, the communities with high phylogenetic diversity demonstrated a great extent of niche differentiation, exhibited a stronger response to environmental variables and were strongly influenced by deterministic processes (40%). Estuaries are significant sources of the ozone-depleting greenhouse gas N 2 O. However, owing to large spatial heterogeneity and discrete measurements, N 2 O emissions from estuaries are considerably uncertain. Microbial processes are disputed in terms of the dominant N 2 O production under severe human disturbance. Herein, combining real-time and high-resolution measurements with bioinformatics analysis, we accurately mapped the consecutive two-dimensional N 2 O distribution in the Pearl River Estuary (PRE), China, and revealed its underlying microbial mechanisms. Both the horizontal and vertical distributions of N 2 O concentrations varied greatly at fine scales. Supersaturated N 2 O concentrations (9.1 to 132.2 nmol/L) in the surface water decreased along the estuarine salinity gradient, with several emission hotspots scattering upstream. The vertical N 2 O distribution showed marked differences from complete mixing upstream to incomplete mixing downstream, with constant or changeable concentrations with increasing depth. Furthermore, spatially varied denitrifying and nitrifying microorganisms controlled the N 2 O production and distribution in the PRE, with denitrification playing the dominant role. The nirK-type and nirS-type denitrifying bacteria were the primary producers of N 2 O in the water and sediment columns, respectively. In addition, substrate concentration (NO 3 - and DOC) regulated N 2 O production by affecting key microbial processes, while physical influences (water-mass mixing and salt wedges) reshaped N 2 O distribution. Designing a multidimensional transformation of metal-organic coordination polymers (MOPs) is highly attractive yet very challenging. Herein, by combining the dynamicity of the coordination bond with the controllability of the chemical reaction, the concept of self-catalysis transformation of MOPs is first proposed. It uses the metal in MOPs as the catalyst to catalyze the chemical reaction of the ligand in the frameworks, simultaneously changing the coordination environment of the metal and the structure of the ligand, resulting in the controllable multidimensional transformation in the morphology and structure of MOPs. The self-catalysis transformation of MOPs can be triggered by heat or light, and crystals with various morphologies and structures can be obtained. Significantly, because the self-catalysis reaction is constraint in the framework, the products at different transformation processes are relatively stable. Monitoring and characterizing the transformation of MOPs give evidences for the exploration of the self-catalysis reaction, and a plausible transformation mechanism is proposed and proved. It can be foreseen that this novel self-catalysis transformation strategy might open up a new direction for the diverse development of MOPs and provide a powerful tool for the study of organic reaction mechanism.

Due to the strong oxidizability of H 2 O 2 , rapid, accurate, sensitive, and stable sensors of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) have attracted wide attention in the chemical industry, food, medicine, household detergents, and environmental monitoring fields. Here, a high-performance H 2 O 2 electrochemical sensing platform is proposed based on an Au nanoparticles@UiO-66 film coated on a carbon cloth (CC) electrode (Au NPs@UiO-66/CC electrode). The Au NPs@UiO-66/CC electrode was prepared through solvothermal growth of a UiO-66 film on a functionalized three-dimensional CC electrode, followed by in situ deposition of Au NPs into the UiO-66 film under a periodic galvanostatic pulse current. The in situ preparation strategy greatly improves the electrical interaction between Au NPs@UiO-66 and the CC substrate without sacrificing the electrochemical activity of the Au NPs@UiO-66/CC electrode. Meanwhile, thanks to the high specific surface area of the three-dimensional Au NPs@UiO-66/CC electrode, the optimized Au NPs@UiO-66/CC electrode illustrates excellent electrochemical detection capability for H 2 O 2 with an extensive linear range (0.1-21 mM), high sensitivity (1048.01 μA mM -1 cm -2 ), and lower limit of detection [0.033 μM (S/N = 3)] and limit of quantification [0.109 μM (S/N = 3)]. At the same time, the encapsulated structure of Au NPs in the UiO-66 film also endows the composite electrode with specific sensing performance owing to the regular opening channels of the UiO-66 films that prevent large-size interferents from reacting to the electrochemically active Au NPs. Together with all these advantages, the proposed sensing platform would exhibit great potential for electrochemical sensors and bioelectronics.

Microplastics are emerging pollutants that can absorb large amounts of hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs). However, no biodynamic model has yet been proposed to estimate their effects on HOC depuration in aquatic organisms, where the HOC concentrations are time-varying. In this work, a microplastic-inclusive biodynamic model was developed to estimate the depuration of HOCs via ingestion of microplastics. Several key parameters of the model were redefined to determine the dynamic HOC concentrations. Through the parameterized model, the relative contributions of dermal and intestinal pathways can be distinguished. Moreover, the model was verified and the vector effect of microplastics was confirmed by studying the depuration of polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) in Daphnia magna (D. magna) with different sizes of polystyrene (PS) microplastics. The results showed that microplastics contributed to the elimination kinetics of PCBs because of the fugacity gradient between the ingested microplastics and the biota lipids, especially for the less hydrophobic PCBs. The intestinal elimination pathway via microplastics would promote overall PCB elimination, contributing 37-41 % and 29-35 % to the total flux in the 100 nm and 2 μm polystyrene (PS) microplastic suspensions, respectively. Furthermore, the contribution of microplastic uptake to total HOC elimination increased with decreasing microplastic size in water, suggesting that microplastics may protect organisms from HOC risks. In conclusion, this work demonstrated that the proposed biodynamic model is capable of estimating the dynamic depuration of HOCs for aquatic organisms. The fabrication of one-dimensional hollow metal-organic frameworks (1D HMOFs) has attracted considerable attention for the catalysis and separation because of their large surface areas and short and continuous axial diffusion pathways. However, the fabrication of 1D HMOFs requires the use of a sacrificial template and multiple steps, limiting their potential applications. This study proposes a novel Marangoni-assisted method to synthesize 1D HMOFs. Using this method, the MOF crystals can undergo heterogeneous nucleation and growth, affording a morphology self-regulation process under kinetic control and forming tubular 1D HMOFs in one step without requiring additional treatment. This method is expected to open new avenues for synthesizing 1D HMOFs.

The influence of influent species immigration (ISI) on membrane fouling behaviors of membrane bioreactors (MBRs) treating municipal wastewater remains elusive, leading to an incomprehensive understanding of fouling ecology in MBRs. To address this issue, two anoxic/aerobic MBRs, which were fed with raw (named MBR-C) and sterilized (MBR-E) municipal wastewater, were operated. Compared with the MBR-E, the average fouling rate of the MBR-C was lowered by 30% over the long-term operation. In addition, the MBR-E sludge had significantly higher unified membrane fouling index and biofilm formation potential than the MBR-C sludge. Considerably larger flocs size and lower soluble microbial products (SMP) concentrations were observed in the MBR-C than in the MBR-E. Moreover, the 16S rRNA gene sequencing results showed that highly diverse and abundant populations responsible for floc-forming, hydrolysis/fermentation and SMP degradation readily inhabited the influent, shaping a unique microbial niche. Based on species mass balance-based assessment, most of these populations were nongrowing and their relative abundances were higher in the MBR-C than in the MBR-E. This suggested an important contribution of the ISI on the assemblage of these bacteria, thus supporting the increased flocs size and lowered SMP concentrations in the MBR-C. Moreover, the SMP-degrading related bacteria and functional pathways played a more crucial role in the MBR-C ecosystem as revealed by the bacterial co-occurrence network and Picrust2 analysis. We report a one-step method to fabricate a free-standing supramolecular membrane composed of melamine and barbituric acid coordinated with silver nitrate (Mba-Ag) at the gas/liquid interface by a soft spray technique. MBa-Ag exhibits a folded two-dimensional layered morphology and thickness of 4.5 μm. The shortwave IR transmittance of MBa-Ag is as high as 95%, which is much higher than the transmittance of UV and visible light, and has the potential for electromagnetic wave transmission.

The ubiquitous pathogen Toxoplasma gondii has a complex lifestyle with different metabolic activities at different stages that are intimately linked to the parasitic environments. Here we identified the eukaryotic regulator of cellular homeostasis AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) in Toxoplasma and discovered its role in metabolic programming during parasite's lytic cycle. The catalytic subunit AMPKα is quickly phosphorylated after the release of intracellular parasites to extracellular environments, driving energy-producing catabolism to power parasite motility and invasion into host cells. Once inside host cells, AMPKα phosphorylation is reduced to basal level to promote a balance between energy production and biomass synthesis, allowing robust parasite replication. AMPKγ depletion abolishes AMPKα phosphorylation and suppresses parasite growth, which can be partially rescued by overexpressing wildtype AMPKα but not the phosphorylation mutants. Thus, through the cyclic reprogramming by AMPK, the parasites' metabolic needs at each stage are satisfied and the lytic cycle progresses robustly., (© 2023. The Author(s).)

Estimation of large-scale and high-precision water quality parameters is critical in explaining the spatiotemporal dynamics and the driving factors of water quality variability, especially in areas with environmental complexity (e.g., crisscrossing waterways, high flood risk in rainy season and seawater invasion). Thus, in this study, a retrieval algorithm was developed to predict chlorophyll-a (Chl-a), total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) concentrations in the Pearl River Estuary (PRE) based on a large amount of in situ measurements and Landsat 8 remote sensing images. Random Forest (RF) machine learning was conducted to identify the relationship between environmental indicators (pH, turbidity, conductivity, total dissolved solids and water temperature), Chl-a, TN and TP. The results showed that the NIR/R Binomial algorithm for Chl-a estimation presented appreciable reliability with R 2 of 0.7429, root mean square error (RMSE) of 1.2089 and mean absolute percent error (MAPE) of 15.33%. The water quality variation in the PRE showed a characteristic of overall improvement and regional deterioration with average concentrations of 7.28 μg/L, 1.15 mg/L and 0.12 mg/L for Chl-a, TN, and TP respectively. Turbidity and pH were identified as the most important indicators to explain Chl-a (52.86%, 39.91%), TN (52.38%, 40.57%) and TP (55.23%, 40.03%) variation. Agricultural pollution was the main pollution source due to the intensive application of fertilizer and increased field size. Besides, land use patterns (e.g., increasing farmland but decreasing forest) greatly influenced water quality from 2010 to 2020. Moreover, light limitation caused by high turbidity reduced the algae productivity and further lowered the Chl-a concentration. The driving factors for regional water quality variations were anthropologically dominated and supplemented by climate change. While nuclear energy with zero carbon emissions will continue to occupy an indispensable position in future scenarios for power generation, the proper disposal of nuclear waste is still highly challenging in many countries. Adsorption is currently one of the primary methods used for removal of cesium from wastewater. However, no available literature has systematically summarized advances and outlooks on the adsorptive removal of cesium, and research issues such as relevant adsorption mechanisms remain largely unexplored. In this study, a bibliometric analysis was used to quantitatively analyze 10141 publications in the Web of Science Core Collection that were published from 1900 to 2022. Current publication trends and active countries, most influential authors and institutions, journal distribution, and research hotspots and trends were reviewed and summarized. The results for the conceptual structure and evolution of investigations in this field showed three distinct periods of rapid development in recent decades. The first period concerned the scope, degree, and influences of pollution by cesium and the development of natural adsorbents. The second period included the exploration and verification of adsorption mechanisms, the fabrication and optimization of new materials, and the application of density functional theory for chemical calculations. The third period involved the development of more advanced biodegradable, nanoscale and synthetic materials with great potential for use as adsorbents as well as advances in engineering applications. Notably, the study showed that it is necessary to further enhance application-driven laboratory investigations. Future directions for research were proposed, such as the investigation of complex adsorption mechanisms, development of new materials, and engineering applications of materials developed in the laboratory. Thiocyanate (SCN - ) detection is highly significant because of the toxicity of SCN - . Herein, a portable and miniaturized lab-on-fiber (LOF) sensor is reported for the detection of SCN - through integrating a Fabry-Perot (F-P) optical resonance cavity based on anionic-responsive metal-insulator-metal (MIM) onto an optical fiber tip. The responsive MIM optical resonance cavity is constructed with an intermediate cationic polymer brush layer (poly[2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl] trimethylammonium chloride, PMETAC) and two silver layers via a facile in situ "layer-by-layer" construction method. When the fabricated LOF sensor was immersed in SCN - solutions, an obvious reflection dip shift can be observed, which is feasible for the quantitative detection of SCN - . What's more, the fabricated LOF sensor exhibits outstanding selectivity and anti-interference against other interfering anions. Furthermore, the fabricated LOF sensor also displays other excellent advantages endowed by the polymer brush film, such as a fast response rate and outstanding reproducibility. Therefore, it is believed that the fabricated miniaturized LOF sensor would show great potential as a portable sensor in future applications, such as environmental monitoring and clinical diagnosis.

Epitaxial metal-organic framework (MOF) films have shown huge potential for use in separation applications. Herein, bendable epitaxial MOF films are fabricated via spraying. The synthesized MOF films show excellent oil-in-water emulsion separation performance even after being bent for multiple times at high curvatures.

Bacteria, archaea and fungi usually coexist in various soil habitats and play important roles in biogeochemical cycle and remediation of contamination. Despite their significance, their combined bioassembly pattern, ecological interactions and driving factors in contaminated soils still remain obscure. To fill the gap, a systemic investigation on the characteristics of microbial community including bacteria, archaea and fungi, assembly patterns and environmental driving factors was conducted in an abandoned gas station soils which were contaminated by polycyclic aromatic compounds and potentially toxic elements for decades. The results showed that the soils were contaminated excessively by benzo[a]pyrene (0.46-2.00 mg/kg) and Dibenz[a,h]anthracene (0.37-1.30 mg/kg). Multitudinous contaminant-degrading/resistant microorganisms and unigenes were detected, indicating potential of the soils to mitigate the pollution. Compared with fungi and archaea, the bacteria had higher community diversity and were more responsive to seasonal shifts. Functional genes (nidB, nahAb, nahAa, adhP, adh, adhC, etc.) involved in biodegradation were highly enriched in summer (1.96% vs 1.80%). The co-occurrence network analysis showed summer communities exhibit a more robust network structure and positive interactions than winter communities. The fungi Neocucurbitaria, Penicillium, Fusarium, Chrysosporium, Knufia, Filobasidium, Wallemia and Rhodotorula were identified as the keystone taxa, indicating that fungi also had important positions in the interdomain molecular ecological networks of both seasons. The network topological properties and |βNTI| (66.7%-93.3% greater than 2) results indicated the deterministic assembly processes of the microbial communities in the contaminated soil. Acenaphthylene, benzo[b]fluoranthene, indeno[1,2,3-cd]perylene, benzo[g,h,i]pyrene and 9-fluorenone were the key environmental factors driving the deterministic assembly processes of the interdomain microbial community in the contaminated soil. Soil polycyclic aromatic compound (PAC) pollution as a result of petroleum exploitation has caused serious environmental problems. The unclear assembly and functional patterns of microorganisms in oilfield soils limits the understanding of microbial mechanisms for PAC elimination and health risk reduction. This study investigated the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and substituted PAHs (SPAHs) occurrence, and their impact on the bacteria-archaea-fungi community diversity, co-occurrence network and functionality in the soil of an abandoned oilfield. The results showed that the PAC content in the oilfield ranged from 3429.03 μg kg -1 to 6070.89 μg kg -1 , and risk assessment results suggested a potential cancer risk to children and adults. High molecular weight PAHs (98.9%) and SPAHs (1.0%) contributed to 99.9% of the toxic equivalent concentration. For microbial analysis, the abundantly detected degraders and unigenes indicated the microbial potential to mitigate pollutants and reduce health risks. Microbial abundance and diversity were found to be negatively correlated with health risk. The co-occurrence network analysis revealed nonrandom assembly patterns of the interdomain microbial communities, and species in the network exhibited strong positive connections (59%). The network demonstrated strong ecological linkages and was divided into five smaller coherent modules, in which the functional microbes were mainly involved in organic substance and mineral component degradation, biological electron transfer and nutrient cycle processes. The keystone species for maintaining microbial ecological functions included Marinobacter of bacteria and Neocosmospora of fungi. Additionally, benzo [g,h,i]pyrene, dibenz [a,h]anthracene, indeno [1,2,3-cd]perylene and total phosphorus were the key environmental factors driving the assembly and functional patterns of microbial communities under pollution stress. Toxoplasma gondii is a ubiquitous pathogen infecting one third of the world's population and diverse animals. It has a complex life cycle alternating among different developmental stages, which contributes to its transmission and pathogenesis. The parasite has a sophisticated gene regulation network that enables timely expression of genes at designated stages. However, little is known about the underlying regulatory mechanisms. Here, we identified an AP2 family transcription factor named TgAP2X-4, which was crucial for parasite growth during the acute infection stage. TgAP2X-4 deletion leads to reduced expression of many genes that are normally upregulated during the M phase of the cell cycle. These include genes that encode rhoptry neck proteins that are key for parasite invasion. As a result, the Δ ap2X-4 mutant displayed significantly decreased efficiency of host cell invasion. Transcriptomic analyses suggested that TgAP2X-4 also regulates a large group of genes that are typically induced during chronic infection, such as BAG1 and LDH2 . Given the diverse impacts on gene expression, TgAP2X-4 inactivation results in severely impaired parasite growth, as well as drastic attenuation of parasite virulence and complete inability to form chronic infection. Therefore, TgAP2X-4 represents a candidate for antitoxoplasmic drug and vaccine designs. IMPORTANCE Toxoplasma gondii has a complicated gene regulation network that allows "just in time" expression of genes to cope with the physiological needs at each stage during the complex life cycle. However, how such regulation is achieved is largely unknown. Here, we identified a transcription factor named TgAP2X-4 that is critical for the growth and life cycle progression of the parasite. Detailed analyses found that TgAP2X-4 regulated the expression of many cell cycle-regulated genes, including a subset of rhoptry genes that were essential for the parasites to enter host cells. It also regulated the expression of many genes involved in the development of chronic infection. Because of the diverse impacts on gene expression, TgAP2X-4 inactivation caused reduced parasite growth in vitro and attenuated virulence in vivo . Therefore, it is a potential target for drug or vaccine designs against Toxoplasma infections.

Polycyclic aromatic compound (PAC) contamination in soil as a result of oil spills is a serious issue because of the huge global demand for fossil energy. This study assessed the vertical variation in polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), derivatives of PAHs (dPAHs) and bacterial community structure in deep soil with long-term contamination by oil spillage. Our results suggest that the content of total PACs ranged from 1196.6 μg/kg to 14980.9 μg/kg and decreased with depth at all sites. PAHs were the most abundant PACs, with a mean concentration of 6640.7 μg/kg, followed by oxygenated PAHs (mean 156.3 μg/kg) and nitrated PAHs (mean 33.4 μg/kg). PAHs are mainly low molecular weight PACs such as naphthalene, fluorene and phenanthrene, while derivatives of PAHs are all low molecular weight PACs and mainly oxygenated PAHs. Low molecular weight PAHs were an important source of dPAHs under specific conditions. The bacterial community structure showed higher bacterial diversity and lower bacterial richness in shallow soil (2-6 m in depth) than in deep soil (8-10 m in depth). Spearman's analysis confirmed that dramatic bacterial community shifts are a response to contamination. At the genus level, the presence of PACs highly selected for Pseudomonas, belonging to Proteobacteria. Moreover, functional predictions based on Tax4Fun revealed that soil with long-term contamination had a strong potential for PAC degradation. In addition, statistical analysis showed that oxidation-reduction potential (Eh) was closely related to variations of bacterial community composition and function. Finally, Ramlibacter, Pseudomonas, Pseudonocardia, c&#95;MB-A2-108, f&#95;Amb-16S-1323, and Qipengyuania were identified by cooccurrence network analysis as keystone taxa contributing to the maintenance of bacterial ecological function. The self-assembly of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is crucial for the functional design of materials, including energy storage materials, catalysts, selective separation materials and optical crystals. However, oriented self-assembly of MOFs is still a challenge. Herein, we propose a novel strategy to drive oriented self-assembly of MOF polyhedral particles at the water-liquid interface by photoinitiated monomer polymerization. The MOF polyhedral particles self-assemble into ordered close-packed structures with obvious orientation in the polymer film, and the orientation is determined by the casting solvent on the water surface. The prepared large-area MOF polymer films show a Janus structure, containing a MOF monolayer and a polymer layer, and can be easily transferred to a variety of substrates. In addition, mixed MOF particles with different sizes and morphologies can also be assembled by this method. Chitosan crosslinked with potassium tripolyphosphate (CTPP) and monochloroacetic-acid-modified chitosan crosslinked with potassium tripolyphosphate (MCTPP) were synthesized for removing UO 2 2+ from acidic radioactive effluents. The influential factors, operational requirements, and interactive mechanisms of the adsorption process were systematically investigated. The mesh-structured composites adsorbed UO 2 2+ most effectively at pH 5.0. The maximum adsorption capacities for pure chitosan, CTPP, and MCTPP were 374.93, 780.89, and 1487.72 mg/g, respectively. Batch experiments indicated that the pH and adsorbent dose strongly influenced UO 2 2+ adsorption. MCTPP could adsorb most UO 2 2+ within 15 min, and equilibrium was reached by ~1 h. The adsorption isotherms indicated that UO 2 2+ adsorption by MCTPP may be an endothermic single-layer adsorption process. Moreover, common metal ions in single-metal systems only slightly affected this process. The results of instrumental characterization and natural water application suggested that the highly developed pore structure and abundant tripolyphosphate groups in synthesized composites were dominant adsorption contributors besides amino and hydroxyl groups. Successful development of the novel material for efficiently adsorbing UO 2 2+ and identification of the adsorption mechanism will provide valuable guidance to chitosan modification and further remediation practices of radioactive effluents., (Copyright © 2022. At present, it remains challenging and desirable to prepare dynamic color-changing materials with wide viewing angles for practical applications. Herein, we proposed a responsive asymmetric metal-insulator-metal (MIM) Fabry-Perot resonance cavity to achieve dynamic color display with high viewing-angle tolerance. The responsive asymmetric MIM cavity is constructed with thermal-responsive poly( N -isopropyl acrylamide) (PNIPAm) brush as the mid-insulator layer sandwiched by two different metallic layers (Sn and Ag). The as-prepared MIM cavity shows both improved viewing-angle tolerance owing to the asymmetric architecture of the cavity and a wide tunable color gamut because of the thermal responsiveness of the mid PNIPAm layer. Remarkably, the as-prepared asymmetric MIM resonance cavity also possesses a relatively fast response rate and good repeatability. Together, with all these advantages, the proposed responsive asymmetric MIM cavity may open a new pathway to prepare high-performance color display material for future practical optical applications.

Soil-slurry bioreactor based bioremediation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) contaminated soil was studied through laboratory and pilot-scale trials, in which the degradation mechanism was explored. Indigenous PAH-degrading consortium was firstly screened out and it degraded 80.5% of total PAHs in lab-scale bioreactors. Then a pilot-scale trial lasting 410 days was conducted in two bioreactors of 1.5 m 3 to examine the operating parameters and validate the optimum running conditions. During the initial 200 days, the crucial running parameters affecting PAH removal were evaluated and selected. Subsequently, an average PAH removal rate of 93.4% was achieved during 15 consecutive batches (210 days) under the optimum running conditions. The kinetic analysis showed that the reactor under optimum conditions achieved the highest PAH degradation rate of 0.1795 day -1 and the shortest half-life of 3.86 days. Notably, efficient mass transfer of PAHs and high biodegradation capability by bioaugmented consortia in soil-slurry bioreactors were two key mechanisms for appreciable PAH removal performance. Under the optimal operating conditions, the degradation rate of low-molecular-weight (LMW) PAHs was significantly higher than high-molecular-weight (HMW) PAHs; when the mass transfer was limited, there was no significant difference between their degradation behaviors. Both microbial co-metabolism and collaborative metabolism might occur when all PAHs demonstrated low degradation rates. The implementation of the p-type metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) in modern sensing systems requires a strategy to effectively enhance its inherent low response. However, for p-type MOS sensors, conventional methods such as catalyst nanoparticle (NP) decoration and grain size regulation do not work as effectively as they do for n-type MOS sensors, which is basically due to the fact that the p-type MOS adopts an unfavorable parallel conduction model. Herein, taking Au@PdO as an example, we demonstrate that the conduction model of the p-type MOS can be manipulated into the series conduction model by inserting a high-conductive metallic core into less-conductive p-type MOS NPs. This unique series conduction model makes the sensor response of Au@PdO nanoparticle arrays (NAs) very sensitive to the catalyst NP decoration as well as the change of structural parameters. For example, Au@PdO NAs demonstrate an ∼9000 times increase in sensor response when decorated with Pd NPs, whereas there is only ∼100 times increase for PdO NAs. This greatly improved response value outperforms all previously reported PdO-based (and most other p-type semiconductor-based) H 2 sensors, which helps the obtained sensor to achieve an ultralow detection limit of ∼0.1 ppm at room temperature. Additionally, Au@PdO NAs inherit the high surface reactivity and gas adsorption property of p-type PdO. As a result, the as-prepared sensor exhibits high humidity-resistive property and excellent selectivity. This work provides a new strategy to significantly enhance the sensing performance of p-type gas sensors by manipulating their conduction model.

2D metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are promising 2D materials with a wide range of applications due to their unique physical and chemical properties. However, 2D MOFs are prone to stacking due to their ultrathin thickness, and the high-yield preparation method of 2D MOFs is highly demanded. In this work, a rapid and scalable method is novelistically presented to prepare 2D MOFs with highly colloidal stability and high yield through coordination modulation at room temperature. A well-ordered CuBDC-MBA nanosheet (BDC, 1,4-benzenedicarboxylic; MBA, 4-methoxybenzoic acid) fabricated by introducing MBA as a modulator exhibits extremely stable colloid suspension for 6 months and the yield of well-dispersed CuBDC-MBA is higher than 88.6%. As MBA successfully participates in synthetic coordination of CuBDC-MBA and is presumably installed on the edge of 2D MOFs with low MBA content due to anisotropic growth, CuBDC-MBA and CuBDC are similar with respect to nanosheet morphology, integrated crystal structure, and porosity. Moreover, well-dispersed CuBDC-MBA shows higher catalytic effectiveness for the cycloaddition reaction of CO 2 with 1.5 times higher yield than CuBDC. Thus, this method can provide a new idea based on coordination modulation to directly fabricate 2D MOFs with purposeful properties.

For decades, lab-on-fiber (LOF) sensing systems have become an emerging optical sensing platform due to the features of small size and light weight. Herein, a simple and efficient in situ construction strategy was reported for the preparation of LOF sensing platform based on the integration of responsive Fabry-Perot optical resonance cavity on optical fibers. The responsive Fabry-Perot optical resonance cavity with thermal poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) polymer brush layer sandwiched by two silver layers was constructed on the end surface of the optical fiber through combining in situ surface-initiated polymerization and metal film deposition techniques. Owing to the thermo-responsiveness of the intermediate layer, the as-prepared LOF sensing system shows a sensitive response towards the environmental temperature. Importantly, the as-prepared LOF sensing system also possesses excellent repeatability and rapid response rate. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), as a chemical platform, combined with multifunctional polymers are of interest in catalytic applications, which can not only inherit the outstanding properties of the two components but also lead to unique synergistic effects. Nonetheless, most MOFs possess varying degrees of water instability, which limits their real application. Herein, we fabricated highly hydrophobic MOF/polymer composites via a universal post-synthetic polymerization strategy as efficient catalysts. Polyaniline (PANI) was first hybridized with MOFs by vapor deposition polymerization, and then, hydrophobic molecules were grafted to the PANI by a covalent linking process, thereby forming a superhydrophobic MOF/PANI hybrid material (MOF/PANI-shp). The resultant MOF/PANI-shp not only obtains superior moisture/water resistance without significantly disturbing the original features but also exhibits a novel catalytic selectivity in styrene oxidation because of the accessible sites and synergistic effects. Such a synthetic strategy for the MOF/polymer catalyst opens a new avenue for the design of a unique catalyst with outstanding catalytic efficiency, selectivity, and stability.

In this study, we proposed a novel IFAS-MBR with low aeration for the treatment of real municipal wastewater. With biocarriers packed in the anoxic tank, the pilot-scale IFAS-MBR operated with average dissolved oxygen concentrations of 0.56 mg/L in the oxic tank. Over 110 days of operation, highly efficient nutrient removal was achieved with the total nitrogen (TN) and phosphorus (TP) removal efficiencies of 78.1 ± 7.2% and 93.7 ± 5.8%, respectively. The average effluent concentrations of TN and TP reached 5.4 and 0.26 mg/L, respectively. Meanwhile, the removal efficiency of COD reached 95.3 ± 1.3% in the system, and the concentrations of COD decreased from 31.9 ± 3.7 (sludge supernatant) to 12.7 ± 1.6 mg/L (permeate) after membrane filtration. Microbial community analysis showed that Nitrosomonas (0.32%) and Nitrospira (1.85%) in activated sludge were the main drivers of the nitrification process, while various denitrifying bacteria in activated sludge and biofilms were responsible for nitrate reduction in the anoxic tank. Candidatus Accumulibacter (0.34%) and Dechloromonas (1.31%) primarily contributed to denitrifying phosphorus uptake in the anoxic tank. Furthermore, these organisms (i.e., core functional microbiota) exhibited stable levels over the entire operation. The highly enriched hydrolytic fermentation bacteria drove community succession, and the remarkable functional robustness of microbial communities in activated sludge and biofilms favored nutrient removal. The ecological roles of influent microflora in activated sludge communities have not been well investigated. Herein, parallel lab-scale anoxic/aerobic (A/O) membrane bioreactors (MBRs), which were fed with raw (MBR-C) and sterilized (MBR-T) municipal wastewater, were operated. The MBRs showed comparable nitrogen removal but superior phosphorus removal in MBR-C than MBR-T over the long-term operation. The MBR-C sludge community had higher diversity and deterministic assembly than the MBR-T sludge community as revealed by 16S rRNA gene sequencing and null model analysis. Moreover, the MBR-C sludge community had higher abundance of polyphosphate accumulating organisms (PAOs) and hydrolytic/fermentative bacteria (HFB) but lower abundance of glycogen-accumulating organisms (GAOs), in comparison with MBR-T sludge. Intriguingly, the results of both the net growth rate and Sloan's neutral model demonstrated that HFB in the sludge community were generally slow-growing or nongrowing and their consistent presence in activated sludge was primarily attributed to the HFB immigration from influent microflora. Positive correlations between PAOs and HFB and potential competitions between HFB and GAOs were observed, as revealed by the putative species-species associations in the ecological networks. Taken together, this work deciphers the positive ecological roles of influent microflora, particularly HFB, in system functioning and highlights the necessity of incorporating influent microbiota for the design and modeling of A/O MBR plants.

Bimetallic organic frameworks (Bi-MOFs) have been recognized as one of the most ideal precursors to construct metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) composites, owing to their high surface area, various chemical structures, and easy removal of the sacrificial MOF scaffolds through calcination. Herein, we synthesized Zn/Ni Bi-MOF for the first time via a facile ion exchange postsynthetic strategy, formed a three-dimensional framework consisting of infinite one-dimensional chains that is unattainable through the direct solvothermal approach, and then transformed the Zn/Ni Bi-MOF into a unique ZnO/NiO heterostructure through calcination. Notably, the obtained sensor based on a ZnO/NiO heterostructure exhibits an ultrahigh response of 280.2 toward 500 ppm n -propanol at 275 °C (17.2-fold enhancement compared with that of ZnO), remarkable selectivity, and a limit of detection of 200 ppb with a notable response (2.51), which outperforms state-of-the-art n -propanol sensors. The enhanced n -propanol sensing properties may be attributed to the synergistic effects of several points including the heterojunction at the interface between the NiO and ZnO nanoparticles, especially a one-dimensional chain MOF template structure as well as the chemical sensitization effect of NiO. This work provides a promising strategy for the development of a novel Bi-MOF-derived MOS heterostructure or homostructure with well-defined morphology and composition that can be applied to the fields of gas sensing, energy storage, and catalysis.

Fungi are known to play important roles in pollutant transformation in activated sludge-based wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). However, the seasonality and distributions of fungal populations in different-sized flocs have still remained largely unknown. In this study, seasonal population dynamics and community separation of fungi in a municipal WWTP across a 1-year period were investigated. We classified all taxa into six categories based on abundances to assess their roles and contributions to the whole community. The results showed that the rare taxa (<0.01%) contributed greatly to species richness (95.27%). Conversely, although low in species diversity, abundant taxa (≥1%) accounted for the majority (89.45%) of the total relative abundance, which suggested that a few core abundant fungi existed in the activated sludge ecosystem. The abundant, conditionally rare, and rare taxa contributed 30.14%, 31.11%, and 38.75%, respectively, to temporal shifts in community structure, and their abundances responded differently to environmental variables, suggesting that these three subcommunities exhibited a large difference in environmental sensitivity. Importantly, the results revealed seasonal dynamics of the whole fungal community and the subcommunities of all the microbial taxon categories, resulting in significant differences in community structures between warm and cold seasons. Furthermore, fungal diversity and the compositions of the whole community and subcommunities differed significantly among flocs of different sizes, which underlined the size-based fungal community separation in activated sludge of WWTPs. The findings of this work improved our understanding of fungal population dynamics and community separation in WWTPs. IMPORTANCE Fungi are important contributors to the various functions of activated sludge in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Unlike previous studies, this work demonstrated the seasonality of the fungal community over a longer time span while it also systematically assessed the contributions of abundant, conditionally rare, and rare taxa to the whole community. Importantly, in the present study, we considered sludge flocs of a certain size range rather than the whole sludge flocs as a community. Our results revealed significant differences in fungal community structure among different-sized flocs, which supported the idea that size-based fungal community segregation is occurring in activated sludge ecosystems. Odors from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) have attracted extensive attention and stringent environmental standards are more widely adopted to reduce odor emissions. Biological odor treatment methods have broader applications than the physical and chemical counterparts as they are environment-friendly, cost-effective and generate low secondary wastes. The aqueous activated sludge (AS) processes are among the most promising approaches for the prevention or end-of-pipe removal of odor emissions and have the potential to simultaneously treat odor and wastewater. However, AS deodorization biotechnologies in WWTPs still need to be further systematically summarized and categorized while in-depth discussions on the characteristics and underlying mechanisms of AS deodorization process are still lacking. Recently, considerable studies have been reported to elucidate the microbial metabolisms in odor control and wastewater treatment. This paper reviews the fundamentals, characteristics, advances and field experiences of three AS biotechnologies for odor treatment in WWTPs, i.e., AS recycling, microaeration in AS digester and AS diffusion. The underlying deodorization mechanisms of typical odors have been revealed through the summary of recent advances on multi-element conversions, metabolic interactions of bacteria, microscopic characterization and identification of functional microorganisms. An interesting reversible shape and structure transformation between two types of two-dimensional (2D) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has been successfully achieved by the spray method. The ability to precisely control the morphology and structure of 2D MOFs is also developed by altering the amount of MOF precursors and reversing the spray order. Meanwhile, the mechanism of the transformation between two MOFs is studied and conversion is induced by the change of the acidity in the reaction system. In addition, the prepared non-interpenetrate CuBDC twists exhibit more remarkable catalytic performance in C-S coupling reaction than Cu(BDC)(DMF) nanosheets owing to the more unsaturated coordination copper active sites from the non-interpenetrate structure. The catalytic result reveals the relationship between structure and function.

Structural color materials with reversible stimuli-responsiveness to external environment have been widely used in sensors, encryption, display, and other fields. Compared with other stimuli, visible light is highly controllable both temporally and spatially with less damage to materials, which is more suitable for structural color patterning. Herein, a new diselenide-containing shape memory material is prepared and used for creating patterns via visible light stimulus. In this system, the structural color originates from birefringence of stretched materials, whose shapes can be fixed while maintaining the mechanical stress. The fixed stress can be released by diselenide metathesis under visible light irradiation. By regulating the wavelength or irradiation time with a commercial projector, the pattern with tunable structural colors is realized and the structural color pattern can be erased and rewritten arbitrarily. During the patterning process, the optical signal is first stored as mechanical signal and then transformed back to optical signal. The effectiveness of nitrate-mediated souring control highly depends on the interactions of sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) and nitrate reducing bacteria (NRB). Biosurfactants produced by natural NRB are promising bio-agents for enhancing NRB competence towards SRB. However, the function of NRB-produced biosurfactants in NRB-SRB interactions remains unexplored due to the rarely successful isolation of natural biosurfactant-producing NRB. Hereby, biosurfactant-aided inhibitory control of SRB strain Desulfomicrobium escambiense ATCC 51164 by biosurfactant-producing NRB strain Pseudomonas stutzeri CX3, reported in our previous work, was investigated. Under non-sour conditions, insufficient nitrate injection resulted in limited SRB inhibition. Phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) biomarkers traced the overall bacterial responses. Compositional PLFA patterns revealed biosurfactant addition benefitted both SRB and NRB towards stressful conditions. Under sour conditions, nitrite oxidation of sulfide proved to be the primary mechanism for sulfide removal. The subsequent elevation of redox potential and pH inhibited SRB activities. NRB-produced biosurfactants significantly enhanced SRB inhibition by NRB through more efficient sulfide removal and effective duration of nitrate in the microcosms. Biosurfactants specially produced by the NRB strain are for the first time reported to significantly strengthen SRB inhibition by NRB via reduced nitrate usage and prolonged effective duration of nitrate, which has encouraging potential in nitrate-dependent souring control., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Ltd. Wavelength-controlled dynamic processes are mostly based on light-triggered isomerization or the cleavage/formation of molecular connections. Control over dynamic metathesis reactions by different light wavelengths, which would be useful in controllable dynamic chemistry, has rarely been studied. Taking advantage of the different bond energies of disulfide and diselenide bonds, we have developed a wavelength-driven exchange reaction between disulfides and diselenides, which underwent metathesis under UV light to produce Se-S bonds. When irradiated with visible light, the Se-S bonds were reversed back to those of the original reactants. The conversion of the exchange depends on the wavelength of the incident light. This light-driven metathesis chemistry was also applied to tune the mechanical properties of polymer materials. The visible-light-induced reverse reaction was compatible with reductant-catalyzed disulfide/diselenide metathesis, and could be utilized to develop a dissipative system with light as the energy input., (© 2018 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Biosurfactant producing nitrate-reducing bacteria (NRB) in anaerobic reservoir environments are closely associated with souring (H 2 S) control in the offshore oil and gas industry. Five NRB strains were screened from offshore produced water samples and all were identified as Pseudomonas stutzeri . Their biosurfactant producing abilities when fed on either glucose or glycerol media were investigated. P. stutzeri CX3 reduced the medium surface tension to 33.5 and 29.6 mN m -1 , respectively, while growing on glucose or glycerol media. The CX3 strain was further inoculated to examine its growth performance, resulting in 32.4% and 94.5% of nitrate consumption over 228 hours of monitoring in two media, respectively. The composition analysis of the biosurfactant product generated by P. stutzeri CX3 was conducted through thin-layer chromatography, gas chromatography with a flame ionization detector (FID) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The biosurfactant product was identified as a mixture of a small part of lipopeptides and a large part of glycolipids while its critical micellar concentration (CMC) was as low as 35 mg L -1 . The biosurfactant product demonstrated high stability over a wide range of temperature (4-121 °C), pH (2-10), and salinity (0-20% w/v) concentration. In-depth understanding of indigenous microbial assemblages resulted from aged contamination by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is of vital importance in successful in situ bioremediation treatments. Soil samples of three boreholes were collected at 12 different vertical depths. Overall, the dominating three-ring PAHs (76.2%) were closely related to distribution patterns of soil dehydrogenase activity, microbial cell numbers, and Shannon biodiversity index (H') of indigenous microorganisms. High-molecular-weight PAHs tend to yield more diverse communities. Results from 16S rRNA analysis indicated that possible functional groups of PAH degradation include three species in Bacillus cereus group, Bacillus sp. SA Ant14, Nocardioides sp., and Ralstonia pickettii. Principal component analysis indicates significant positive correlations between the content of high-molecular-weight PAHs and the distribution of Bacillus weihenstephanensis KBAB4 and Nocardioides sp. The species B. cereus 03BB102, Bacillus thuringiensis, B. weihenstephanensis KBAB4, and Nocardioides sp. were recognized as main PAH degraders and thus recommended to be utilized in further bioremediation applications. The vertical distribution characteristics of PAHs in soil profiles (1-12 m) and the internal relationship between the transport mechanisms of PAHs and the response of soil biological properties help further understand the microbial diversity and activity in an aged site.
