Introduction: Alcohol-related cues trigger relapse in patients with alcohol use disorders (AUDs). These cues may automatically activate motivational approach tendencies. Through computerised cognitive bias modification (CBM), the tendencies of patients with AUD to approach alcohol can be reduced. The present protocol describes a training intervention with approach bias modification (ApBM) incorporating religion-related stimuli as an alternative to alcohol to improve the effectiveness of CBM in a religion-based rehabilitation centre. AUD is often related to patients' religious attitudes in this treatment context. The religion-adapted ApBM, therefore, combines training in avoidance of alcohol-related motivational cues and an approach to religion-based motivational cues. This combination's effectiveness will be compared with a standard ApBM and to a sham ApBM., Methods and Analysis: Using a double-blind multiarm parallel randomised controlled trial procedure (ratio 1:1:1), 120 patients with AUD will be randomised into 1 of 3 conditions (religion-adapted ApBM, standard ApBM or sham ApBM) with personalised stimuli. The interventions are delivered over 4 consecutive days during an inpatient detoxification programme in addition to treatment as usual. Assessments occur before the start of the training and after the fourth training session, with follow-up assessments after 1 and 4 months. A multivariate analysis of variance will be used with the primary outcomes, the percentage of days abstinent and meaning in life 4-month follow-up. The consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic for the health and wellbeing of the Dutch population exceed the normal regional research-approach. That is why the 'network GOR-COVID-19' - comprised of GGD GHOR Nederland (representing the municipal health services), RIVM, Nivel and ARQ National Psychotrauma Centre - has taken the initiative for a national research program to monitor the health impact of the corona crisis over time. As children with epilepsy may have a number of learning and behavioral problems, it is important that insight into the underlying neurocognitive differences in these children, which may underlie these areas of challenge is gained. Executive function (EF) problems particularly are associated with specific learning abilities as well as behavioral problems. We aim to review systematically the current status of empirical studies on the association between EF problems and behavior and socioemotional problems in children with epilepsy. After search, 26 empirical studies were identified, most of them of moderate quality. Overall, attention problems were the most reported cognitive deficit in test assessment and the most reported problem by parents. In 54% of the studies, children with epilepsy scored below average compared to controls/normative samples on different aspects of EF. Most studies reported behavior problems, which ranged from mild to severe. Forty-two percent of the studies specifically reported relationships between EF deficits and behavioral problems. In the remaining studies, below average neuropsychological functioning seemed to be accompanied by above average reported behavioral problems. The association was most pronounced for cognitive control and attention in relation to externalizing behavior problems. This cognitive control is also associated with social functioning. Relevant epilepsy variables in this relationship were early age at onset and high seizure frequency.Future research should distinguish specific aspects of EF and take age into account, as this provides more insight on the association between EF and behavior in pediatric epilepsy, which makes it possible to develop appropriate and early intervention.

Objectives: This study characterizes risk-taking behaviours in a group of people with a self-reported diagnosis of BD using fuzzy trace theory (FTT). FTT hypothesizes that risk-taking is a 'reasoned' (but sometimes faulty) action, rather than an impulsive act associated with mood fluctuations., Design: We tested whether measures of FTT (verbatim and gist-based thinking) were predictive of risk-taking intentions in BD, after controlling for mood and impulsivity. We hypothesized that FTT scales would be significant predictors of risk-taking intentions even after accounting for mood and impulsivity., Methods: Fifty-eight participants with BD (age range 21-78, 68% female) completed a series of online questionnaires assessing risk intentions, mood, impulsivity, and FTT., Results: Fuzzy trace theory scales significantly predicted risk-taking intentions (medium effect sizes), after controlling for mood and impulsivity consistent with FTT (part range .26 to .49). Participants with BD did not show any statistically significant tendency towards verbatim-based thinking., Conclusions: Fuzzy trace theory gist and verbatim representations were both independent predictors of risk-taking intentions, even after controlling for mood and impulsivity. The results offer an innovative conceptualization of the mechanisms behind risk-taking in BD., Practitioner Points: Risk-taking behaviour in bipolar disorder is not just a consequence of impulsivity. Background: Novel balance-targeting exergames controlled with off-the-shelf hardware, were developed based on current recommendations for balance training in healthy older adults and documented shortcomings of existing games. The aim of this study was to explore the feasibility of these novel exergames as training tool for elderly and, more specifically whether these games can elicit more challenging weight shifts and higher levels of muscle activity compared to existing off-the-shelf exergames. Furthermore, the motivational pull in these new games was studied., Methods: Sixteen healthy older adults were recruited to play the novel games and two reference games that were found to be the most challenging ones in terms of weight shifts or muscle activity in previous studies. Weight shifts were expressed relative to participants' Functional Limits of Stability (FLOS). Muscular challenge of the games was quantified by dividing the signal into 200 ms blocks and determining the average muscle activity within these blocks. The muscle activity was normalized to maximal voluntary contractions (MVC) to categorize the blocks in zones of < 40, 40-60, 60-80 and > 80% MVC. Subsequently, the number of blocks per intensity level and the number of consecutive blocks above 40% were determined. Motivation to play the games was assessed using the Intrinsic Motivation Inventory (IMI) and scores between the games were analyzed using Generalized Estimated Equations (GEE)., Results: The novel exergames successfully elicited center of mass (COM) displacements with medians of around 80% of FLOS or higher for all directions. Furthermore, the COM displacements in the novel games were larger for each direction than in the reference games, although for one game the sideward left direction reached significance only at the third trial. Compared to the existing games, longer blocks of muscle activation above 40% MVC were found, but overall intensity remained low. IMI scores were high on all subscales, indicating that older adults experienced the games as motivating., Conclusion: We conclude that affordable hardware can be used to create challenging and enjoyable balance training programs using exergames. The exergames that were successful in eliciting challenging weight shifts and muscle activity should now be further studied in longitudinal randomized controlled interventions, to assess effects on balance, muscle strength and eventually fall risk in healthy older adults.

Executive dysfunction and behavioral problems are common in children with epilepsy. Inhibition and shifting, both aspects of cognitive control, seem related to behavior problems and are thought to be driven mainly by the frontal lobes. We investigated if inhibition and shifting deficits are present in children with frontal lobe epilepsy (FLE). Secondly, we studied the relationship between these deficits and behavior problems. Thirty-one children were administered the Stroop Color Word Test and a digital version of the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST). Parents completed the Behavioral Rating Inventory for Executive Function (BRIEF) and the Achenbach scale (Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL)). About 20% of the children displayed significant low results on the Stroop Effect. About 60% showed shifting problems on the WCST. Parents reported cognitive control and behavioral deficits in about a third of the children. Also, behavioral problems and deficits in inhibition and shifting in daily life (BRIEF) seem to be related. There were no correlations between questionnaires and the Stroop and the WCST. Objective: Caring for a child with a chronic illness adds stress to the typical parenting stress in healthy developing children. This stress can place a heavy burden on parents and may increase when a child displays problem behavior. In general, parenting and child's behavior problems are associated. Furthermore, externalizing (more outgoing) behavior is reported frequently in children with frontal lobe epilepsy (FLE). Therefore, in this study, we first investigated the burden of parents of children with FLE, and second, we investigated the relation between the experienced burden and reported behavioral problems. The validity of parents' reports on proxy measures as well as duration of epilepsy is taken into account., Methods: Thirty-one parents of children with FLE completed validated questionnaires about behavioral problems and burden of parenting. To examine if parents tend to be inconsistent or unusually negative, we used the two validity scales of the Behavioral Rating Inventory of Executive Function (BRIEF) (Negativity and Inconsistency)., Results: Only parents of children with FLE who have had epilepsy for 5 years or longer report more problems on the Nijmeegse Vragenlijst voor de Opvoedingssituatie (NVOS) subscales 'Able to manage', 'Child is a burden', and 'Good Interaction' compared with the healthy controls. The subscale 'Child is a burden' significantly predicts scores in about 20% to 49% on the main scales of the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL), the Global Executive Composite (GEC), and Behavioral Regulation Index (BRI) of the BRIEF. Only 6% of parents scored in the clinical range of the negativity scale of the BRIEF. For the inconsistency scale, this was 45%., Conclusion: Parents of children with FLE do not report excessive parental burden. Longer duration of epilepsy might be a risk factor in experiencing burden. The findings suggest a link between parental burden and behavioral problems in children with FLE. Externalizing behavioral problems are the most marked behavioral problems, which relate to the parental burden. Parents tend to be inconsistent in their ratings., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Inc. Objective: Epilepsy, as a chronic and neurological disease, is generally associated with an increased risk for social and emotional behavior problems in children. These findings are mostly derived from studies on children with different epilepsy types. However, there is limited information about the associations between frontal lobe epilepsy (FLE) and cognitive and behavioral problems. The aim of this study was to examine relationships between FLE and executive and behavioral functioning reported by parents and teachers., Material and Methods: Teachers and parents of 32 children (18 boys, 14 girls, mean age 9; 2 years ±1;6) with a confirmed diagnosis of FLE completed the Behavioral Rating Inventory of Executive Function (BRIEF), the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL), and Teacher Report Form (TRF)., Results: About 25 to 35% of the parents and teachers rated children in the abnormal range of the main scales of the BRIEF, CBCL, and TRF. Teachers tend to report more metacognition problems, whereas parents tend to report more behavior regulation problems. Children with left-sided FLE showed more problems than children with bilateral or right-sided FLE. The whole range of executive dysfunctioning is linked to behavioral dysfunctioning in FLE, but ratings vary across settings and informants. The epilepsy variables age of onset, lateralization, drug load, and duration of epilepsy had only a small and scattered contribution., Conclusion: Ratings on the BRIEF, CBCL, and TRF are moderately to highly correlated, suggesting a (strong) link between executive and behavioral functioning. From the age of about 60, many people begin to experience difficulties with tasks that require the use of prospective memory and begin to have trouble finding words and names. Worried that these symptoms may be indicative of the onset of Alzheimer's disease, many of them fill in online self-tests or consult their family doctor. In the vast majority of cases, symptoms like these indicate completely natural age-related forgetfulness. Physicians should encourage a socially active lifestyle to slow down further decline. In cases of mild cognitive impairment (MCI), the physician should be aware of patients who deny or trivialise memory problems, especially if these problems have repercussions for performance in professions such as that of airline pilots or medical practitioners. In the absence of formal annual performance checks, ageing physicians should keep a close watch on themselves and on their colleagues.

This article presents an overview of biases in studies among the aged as a consequence of under-coverage and non-response. The question studied is whether participants and non-participants in research differed in their socioeconomic status (education; income; SES of neighbourhood), social integration (marital status; living arrangements; social participation; ethnicity) and health (general health situation; mortality in the period after study; lifestyle and risk factors, namely obesity and alcohol abuse; contact with physicians). In all, 65 studies were reviewed. The results showed that research participants had a higher socioeconomic status, were more integrated socially and in better health than research non-participants. The differences (effect sizes) were small to moderate. On the basis of these results, we can conclude that univariate distributions and prevalence estimates as well as relationships between variables in published research will frequently be biased.
