In this work, the theory of the modified unit sphere representation (mUSR) has been proposed as a computational tool suitable for the three-dimensional representation of the pure electric-dipole [ β λ μ ν ( - 2 ω ; ω , ω ) ] as well as of the mixed electric-dipole/magnetic-dipole [   α J λ μ ν ( - 2 ω ; ω , ω ) and   β J λ μ ν ( - 2 ω ; ω , ω ) ] or electric-dipole/electric-quadrupole [   α K λ μ ν o ( - 2 ω ; ω , ω ) and   β K λ μ ν o ( - 2 ω ; ω , ω ) ] first hyperpolarizabilities. These five quantities are Cartesian tensors and they are responsible for the chiral signal in the chiroptical version of the hyper-Rayleigh scattering (HRS) spectroscopy, namely the HRS optical activity (HRS-OA) spectroscopy. For the first time, for each hyperpolarizability, alongside with the three-dimensional representation of the whole (i.e., reducible) Cartesian tensors, the mUSRs are developed for each of the irreducible Cartesian tensors (ICTs) that constitute them. This scheme has been applied to a series of three (chiral) hexahelicene molecules containing different degrees of electron-withdrawing (quinone) groups and characterized by the same (positive) handedness. Due to the increasing pollution of electromagnetic waves and the vigorous development of intelligent electronic devices, there is great interest in finding high-quality electromagnetic wave absorbing materials for integrated control boxes (ICBs) that integrate various electronic components. Polyaniline (PANI) is a new type of absorbing material with great potential due to its designable structure, simple preparation process, low density and adjustable conductivity. Herein, we prepared BCNF/PANI nanoscale conductive fibers with core-shell structure by in-situ growth of PANI on the surface of bacterial cellulose nanofibers (BCNF) by oxidative polymerization and further prepared cellulose/polyaniline/polyvinyl alcohol (BCNF/PANI/PVA) composite aerogel absorbing material by a freeze-drying process. The results show that the prepared BCNF/PANI/PVA aerogel has excellent absorption performance: the minimum reflection loss is -53.19 dB at 4.16 GHz with 6.11 mm thickness, and the effective absorption bandwidth is 2.20 GHz. The influence of the macrostructure of the BCNF/PANI/PVA absorbing unit on the absorption performance was further explored through numerical simulation, and the efficient electromagnetic protection of the small ICB was finally realized with the help of the macro-optimization strategy. The United Nations focuses on 17 urgent problems to call for action in all countries. Goal 7 of the 17 urgent problems is based on affordable and clean energy. Since 2017, National Taitung University (NTTU) has dedicated more time and effort to attain the wisdom, health, sustainability and aesthetics as an international green university. To accomplish this, we adhere and construct a safe radiofrequency and electromagnetic wave environment to achieve healthy and sustainable campus objectives. According to the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings, NTTU was ranked 74th in 2021, 67th in 2022 and 58th in 2023. In this study, we propose a formal estimation of wireless network services for classrooms or smart spaces to achieve the goal of safe radiofrequency and electromagnetic waves. Inside classrooms or smart spaces, better wireless signal strength and safer electromagnetic waves are achieved. Moreover, the proposed method can be used to determine the quantity of wireless access points for a given classroom or smart space to avoid unsafe electromagnetic waves and inappropriate energy consumption. Recently, metasurface-based photodetectors (metaphotodetectors) have been developed and applied in various fields. Metasurfaces are artificial materials with unique properties that have emerged over the past decade, and photodetectors are powerful tools used to quantify incident electromagnetic wave information by measuring changes in the conductivity of irradiated materials. Through an efficient microstructural design, metasurfaces can effectively regulate numerous characteristics of electromagnetic waves and have demonstrated unique advantages in various fields, including holographic projection, stealth, biological image enhancement, biological sensing, and energy absorption applications. Photodetectors play a crucial role in military and civilian applications; therefore, efficient photodetectors are essential for optical communications, imaging technology, and spectral analysis. Metaphotodetectors have considerably improved sensitivity and noise-equivalent power and miniaturization over conventional photodetectors. This review summarizes the advantages of metaphotodetectors based on five aspects. Furthermore, the applications of metaphotodetectors in various fields including military and civil applications, are systematically discussed. It highlights the potential future applications and developmental trends of metasurfaces in metaphotodetectors, provides systematic guidance for their development, and establishes metasurfaces as a promising technology., (© 2024 The Author(s). Hierarchical-porous-structured materials have been widely used in the field of electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption, playing a critical role in minimizing EMW interference and pollution. High-quality EMW absorbers, characterized by a lower thickness, lighter weight, wider absorption band, and stronger absorption capacity, have been instrumental in reducing damage and preventing malfunctions in the automotive and aviation industries. The utilization of discarded nut shells through recycling can not only alleviate environmental problems but relieve resource constraints. Herein, a facile method for the preparation of hierarchical porous biomass carbon derived from abandoned Xanthoceras Sorbifolium Bunge Shell (XSS) biomass was developed for high-performance EMW absorption. The porous structures of XSS biochar were studied by using different levels of the K 2 CO 3 activator and simple carbonization. The effect of K 2 CO 3 on the EMW parameters, including the complex permittivity, complex permeability, polarization relaxation, and impedance matching, was analyzed. The best EMW absorption performance of the XSS biochar was observed at a mass ratio of activator-to-biomass of 2:1. A minimum reflection loss (RL min ) of -38.9 dB was achieved at 9.12 GHz, and a maximum effective absorption bandwidth (EAB max ) of up to 3.28 GHz (14.72~18.0 GHz) could be obtained at a 1.8 mm thickness. These results demonstrated that hierarchical porous XSS carbon was prepared successfully. Simultaneously, the prepared XSS biochar was confirmed as a potential and powerfully attractive EMW-absorbing material. The proposal also provided a simple strategy for the development of a green, low-cost, and sustainable biochar as a lightweight high-performance absorbing material.

The aim of this research is to develop high carbon-yielding biochar from pinewood, coffee husk, sugarcane bagasse, and maize cob and to characterize the biochar/HDPE composites for electromagnetic (EM) shielding application. During the biochar/HDPE composites fabrication, slow pyrolysis and compression molding manufacturing were used. The enhanced properties characterizations were conducted by using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential thermal analysis (DTA), Fourier transform spectrometry (FTIR), Brunauer-Emmet-Teller (BET) analysis, digital multi-meter, and proximity analysis. The results of biochar pyrolysis showed the maximum carbon yield of 74.6 %, 68.9 %, 68.4 %, and 40 % for pine wood, maize cob, sugarcane bagasse, and coffee husk respectively. The BET analysis showed the maximum specific surface area (734.5 m 2 /g), pore volume (0.2364 cm 3 /g), and pore radius (9.897 Å) from the pine wood biochar. The biochar loading analysis results showed that the 30 % and 40 % pine wood biochar significantly enhanced the electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, thermal stability, crystallinity, and EM shielding effectiveness (SE) of the biochar/HDPE composites. In particular, the biochar/HDPE composite with 30 wt% pine wood biochar showed the highest thermal conductivity of 2.219 W/mK, and the 40 wt% pine wood biochar/HDPE composite achieved the highest electrical conductivity of 4.67 × 10 -7  S/cm and EM SE of 44.03 dB at 2.1 GHz., Competing Interests: The authors declare that they have no known competing financial interests or personal relationships that could have appeared to influence the work reported in this paper., (© 2024 The Authors.)

Since the discovery that Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticle has intrinsic natural peroxidase-like activity by Yan et al in 2007, mimicking native enzymes via nano-engineering (named as nanozyme) pays a new avenue to bypass the fragility and recyclability of natural enzymes and thus expedites the biocatalysis in multidisciplinary applications. In addition, the high programmability and structural stability attributes of nanozyme afford the ease of coupling with electromagnetic waves of different energies, providing great opportunities to construct photo-responsive nanozyme under user-defined electromagnetic waves, which is known as photo-nanozyme. Understanding the oxidative and thermal degradation of CO 2 sorbents is essential for assessing long-term sorbent stability in direct air capture (DAC). The potential degradation pathway of imidazolium cyanopyrrolide, an ionic liquid (IL) functionalized for superior CO 2 capacity and selectivity, is evaluated under accelerated degradation conditions to elucidate the secondary reactions that can occur during repetitive absorption-desorption thermal-swing cycles. The combined analysis from various spectroscopic, chromatographic, and thermal gravimetric measurements indicated that radical and S N 2 mechanisms in degradation are encouraged by the nucleophilicity of the anion. Thickening of the liquid and gas evolution are accompanied by 50 % reduction in CO 2 capacity after a 7-day exposure to O 2 under 80 °C. To prevent long exposure to conventional thermal heating, microwave (MW) regeneration of the CO 2 -reactive IL is used, where dielectric heating at 80 and 100 °C rapidly desorbs CO 2 and regenerates the IL without any measurable degradation., (© 2023 The Authors. Core-shell structures and interfacial polarization are of great significance to meet the diversified requirements of microwave attenuation. Herein, α -Fe 2 O 3 @MoS 2 nanocomposites are fabricated via a simple two-step hydrothermal process, in which MoS 2 nanosheets as the shell are self-assembled and α -Fe 2 O 3 microdrums are used as the core to constitute a special flower-like morphology with core-shell structure. This structure can provide more interface contact to achieve strong interfacial polarization and possibly offer more multiple reflection and scattering of electromagnetic waves. Furthermore, the microwave dissipation performances of α -Fe 2 O 3 @MoS 2 nanocomposites can be significantly improved through construction of core-shell structure and flower-like morphology, controlling the content of α -Fe 2 O 3 microdrums and adjusting the filler loading ratios. This work proves that the as-synthesized nanocomposites achieve excellent effective absorption bandwidth and outstanding electromagnetic wave absorption capabilities due to their special interfaces, core-shell structures and good impedance matching conditions. Carbon microcoils (CMCs) were formed on stainless steel substrates using C 2 H 2 + SF 6 gas flows in a thermal chemical vapor deposition (CVD) system. The manipulation of the SF 6 gas flow rate and the SF 6 gas flow injection time was carried out to obtain controllable CMC geometries. The change in CMC geometry, especially CMC diameter as a function of SF 6 gas flow injection time, was remarkable. In addition, the incorporation of H 2 gas into the C 2 H 2 + SF 6 gas flow system with cyclic SF 6 gas flow caused the formation of the hybrid of carbon nanofibers-carbon microcoils (CNFs-CMCs). The hybrid of CNFs-CMCs was composed of numerous small-sized CNFs, which formed on the CMCs surfaces. The electromagnetic wave shielding effectiveness (SE) of the heating film, made by the hybrids of CNFs-CMCs incorporated carbon paste film, was investigated across operating frequencies in the 1.5-40 GHz range. It was compared to heating films made from commercial carbon paste or the controllable CMCs incorporated carbon paste. Although the electrical conductivity of the native commercial carbon paste was lowered by both the incorporation of the CMCs and the hybrids of CNFs-CMCs, the total SE values of the manufactured heating film increased following the incorporation of these materials. Considering the thickness of the heating film, the presently measured values rank highly among the previously reported total SE values. This dramatic improvement in the total SE values was mainly ascribed to the intrinsic characteristics of CMC and/or the hybrid of CNFs-CMCs contributing to the absorption shielding route of electromagnetic waves.

It is well-known that wireless communication technologies facilitate human life. However, the harmful effects of electromagnetic field (EMF) radiation on the human body should not be ignored. In the present study, we evaluated the effects of long-term, prenatal exposure to EMF radiation on the myocardium of rats at varying durations. Overall, 18 pregnant Sprague-Dawley rats were assigned into six groups ( n = 3 in each group). In all groups other than the control group, three pregnant rats were exposed to EMF radiation (900, 1800 and 2100 MHz) for 6, 12 and 24 h over 20 days. After delivery, the newborn male pups were identified and six newborn male pups from each group were randomly selected . Then, histopathological and biochemical analysis of myocardial samples were performed. When 24-h/day prenatal exposures to 900, 1800, 2100 MHz EMF radiation were evaluated, myocardial damage was greater in the 2100 MHz EMF-24h group than the other groups. In addition, when malondialdehyde (MDA) and glutathione (GSH) levels associated with reactive oxidative species (ROS) were evaluated, the MDA level was higher in the 2100 MHz EMF-24h group compared with the other groups. The GSH level was also lower in the 2100 MHz EMF-24h group. When the 6, 12 and 24 h/day prenatal exposures to 1800 MHz EMF radiation were evaluated, myocardial damage was greater in 1800 MHz EMF-24h group than the remaining groups ( p < 0.0001). Also, MDA level was greater in the 1800 MHz EMF-24h group compared with the other groups while the GSH level was lower in this group. It was shown that myocardial tissue was affected more by long-term exposure to EMF radiation at high frequencies. The data raise concerns that the harmful effects of non-ionizing radiation exposure on cardiac tissue will increase with 5G technology.

Pathogenic viral infections have become a serious public health issue worldwide. Viruses can infect all cell-based organisms and cause varying injuries and damage, resulting in diseases or even death. With the prevalence of highly pathogenic viruses, such as severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), it is urgent to develop efficient and safe approaches to inactivate pathogenic viruses. Traditional methods of inactivating pathogenic viruses are practical but have several limitations. Electromagnetic waves, with high penetration capacity, physical resonance, and non-contamination, have emerged as a potential strategy to inactivate pathogenic viruses and have attracted increasing attention. This paper reviews the recent literature on the effects of electromagnetic waves on pathogenic viruses and their mechanisms, as well as promising applications of electromagnetic waves to inactivate pathogenic viruses, to provide new ideas and methods for this inactivation., (© 2022. We have read the article recently published by Lopez et al., 2020 (Lopez et al., 2021). This study aimed to find a possible relationship, if any, between exposure to RF-EMF with some health indicators such as sleep, headache, and fatigue collected through surveys, using maximum electromagnetic radiation peak-to-peak measurements. Throughout human history, the control of light, electricity and heat has evolved to become the cornerstone of various innovations and developments in electrical and electromagnetic technologies. Wireless communications, laser and computer technologies have all been achieved by altering the way light and other energy forms act naturally and how to manage them in a controlled manner. At the nanoscale, to control light and heat, matured nanostructure fabrication techniques have been developed in the last two decades, and a wide range of groundbreaking processes have been achieved. Photonic crystals, nanolithography, plasmonics phenomena and nanoparticle manipulation are the main areas where these techniques have been applied successfully and led to an emergent material sciences branch known as metamaterials. Metamaterials and functional material development strategies are focused on the structures of the matter itself, which has led to unconventional and unique electromagnetic properties through the manipulation of light-and in a more general picture the electromagnetic waves-in widespread manner. Metamaterial's nanostructures have precise shape, geometry, size, direction and arrangement. Such configurations are impacting the electromagnetic light waves to generate novel properties that are difficult or even impossible to obtain with natural materials. This review discusses these metamaterials and metasurfaces from the perspectives of materials, mechanisms and advanced metadevices in depth, with the aim to serve as a solid reference for future works in this exciting and rapidly emerging topic.

Objective: To evaluate the effects of electromagnetic waves generated by a commercial medical electromagnetic instrument (trade name, TDP, the Chinese phonetic abbreviation of "Te-ding Dian-ci-bo Pu") as an adjuvant to improve the rate of increase of milk feeds per day by premature infants with necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC)., Methods: This study was a prospective randomized clinical trial. A total of 103 premature infants were diagnosed with NEC II, but there was no need for surgery. The infants were randomly divided into the TDP intervention group and the control group by a randomized method using SPSS 24.0. The patients in the TDP intervention group were treated with TDP irradiation and routine interventions; those in the control group were treated with routine interventions. The rate of increase of milk feeds per day, the time to achieve total gastrointestinal nutrition, the velocity of weight gain, and the complication incidence rate were recorded and compared., Results: The rate of increase of milk feeds per day in the TDP intervention group was significantly greater than that in the control group [14.51 (11.58~22.11) ml/kg/d vs. 10.15 (6.15~15.87) ml/kg/d, P = 0.002]. Compared to the control group, the time to achieve total gastrointestinal nutrition (21.45 ± 1.87 d vs. 36.43 ± 2.585 d, P = 0.000) and the velocity of weight gain (19.65 ± 15.27% vs. 13.68 ± 7.15%, P = 0.013) in the TDP intervention group were substantially better than those in the control group. The aim of this work is to propose a consensus to scientific community that handles personal exposimeters, which measure intensity of an electromagnetic wave (W/m 2 ). To express the intensity of an electromagnetic wave there is a duality in the way of expressing it. Some scientists prefer to use W/m 2 while others use V/m, which is a unit of the electric field. There is also a duality in the name, sometimes it is called it power flux density and some other times, wave intensity. We believe that this second name is more appropriate from the point of view of physics. We suggest expressing intensity of an electromagnetic wave in W/m 2 instead of giving the value of their electric field which is measured in V/m. There is a quadratic relation between electric field and intensity of the wave, and it is necessary to do a mathematical operation, so in our opinion, it is preferable to use W/m 2 which directly gives us the value of the measured intensity. Furthermore, if the intensity is very low, it may be expressed in μW/m 2 and with only three significant figures, due to sensitivity of the current exposimeters used., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Inc. A large range of applications have been identified based upon the communication of underground sensors deeply buried in the soil. The classical electromagnetic wave (EM) approach, which works well for terrestrial communication in air medium, when applied for this underground communication, suffers from significant challenges attributing to signal absorption by rocks, soil, or water contents, highly varying channel condition caused by soil characteristics, and requirement of big antennas. As a strong alternative of EM, various magnetic induction (MI) techniques have been introduced. These techniques basically depend upon the magnetic induction between two coupled coils associated with transceiver sensor nodes. This paper elaborates on three basic MI communication mechanisms i.e . direct MI transmission, MI waveguide transmission, and 3D coil MI communication with detailed discussion of their working mechanism, advantages and limitations. The comparative analysis of these MI techniques with each other as well as with EM wave method will facilitate the users in choosing the best method to offer enhanced transmission range (upto 250 m), reduced path loss (<100 dB), channel reliability, working bandwidth (1-2 kHz), & omni-directional coverage to realize the promising MI-based wireless underground sensor network (WUSN) applications., Competing Interests: The authors declare that they have no competing interests., (© 2022 Malik et al.)

In this study, high-strength concrete containing hooked-end steel or amorphous metallic fibers was fabricated, and the electrical conductivity and electromagnetic shielding effectiveness were evaluated after 28 and 208 days based on considerations of the influences of the moisture content. Amorphous metallic fibers, which have the same length and length/equivalent diameter ratio as hooked-end steel fibers, were favored for the formation of a conductive network because they can be added in large quantities owing to their low densities. These fibers have a large specific surface area as thin plates. The electromagnetic shielding effectiveness clearly improved as the electrical conductivity increased, and it can be expected that the shielding effectiveness will approach the saturation level when the fiber volume fraction of amorphous metallic fibers exceeds 0.5 vol.%. Meanwhile, it is necessary to reduce the amount of moisture to conservatively evaluate the electromagnetic shielding performance. In particular, when 0.5 vol.% of amorphous metallic fibers was added, a shielding effectiveness of >80 dB (based on a thickness of 300 mm) was achieved at a low moisture content after 208 days. Similar to the electrical conductivity, excellent shielding effectiveness can be expected from amorphous metallic fibers at low contents compared to that provided by hooked-end steel fibers.

We propose an original technique for the fabrication of terahertz (THz) metasurfaces comprising a 3D printed regular array of polymer hemispheres covered with a thin conductive layer. We demonstrate that the deposition of a thin metal layer onto polymer hemispheres suppresses the THz reflectivity to almost zero, while the frequency range of such a suppression can be considerably broadened by enhancing the structure with graphene. Scaling up of the proposed technique makes it possible to tailor the electromagnetic responses of metasurfaces and allows for the fabrication of various components of THz photonics.

Prestressed concrete (PSC) is widely used for the construction of bridges. The collapse of several bridges with PSC has been reported, and insufficient grout and tendon corrosion were found inside the ducts of these bridges. Therefore, non-destructive testing (NDT) technology is important for identifying defects inside ducts in PSC structures. Electromagnetic (EM) waves have limited detection of internal defects in ducts due to strong reflections from the surface of the steel ducts. Spectral analysis of the existing impact echo (IE) method is limited to specific conditions. Moreover, the flexural mode in upper defects of ducts located at a shallow depth and delamination defects inside ducts are not considered. In this study, the applicability of the elastic wave of IE was analyzed, and multichannel analysis of surface, EM, and shear waves was employed to evaluate six types of PSC structures. A procedure using EM waves, IE, and principal component analysis (PCA) was proposed for a more accurate classification of defect types inside ducts. The proposed procedure was effective in classifying upper, internal, and delamination defects of ducts under 100 mm in thickness, and it could be utilized up to 200 mm in the case of duct defect limitations.

This study aims to investigate the toxicity of the plant to heavy elements (HMs). For this purpose, the estimated daily intake (EDI) parameters of potentially toxic elements (PTE) per kilogram of body weight, target hazard quotient (THQ) for non-carcinogenic disorders, total hazard index (HI), and bioconcentration factor (BCF) are determined in the plant at different stages of growth. In this study, the reaction of the plant to different electromagnetic waves at different stages of growth (DSG) is also investigated, and the relationship between the THQ values and electromagnetic waves is prepared. The results show that Pb has the highest EDI value (5.97), Pb (74.67) and Cd (9.75) have the highest THQ values, and Cd has the highest BCF value (30.44). Also, the results show that HI values are higher than the threshold in the growth (69.98), flowering (71.38), and fruiting (68.06) stages. Results of BCF indicate Pb, and Cd has absorption rate in Capsicum towards. Contaminated Capsicum plants submitted to electromagnetic waves showed a significant relationship between Pb and the b490, and b560 spectra, Cd and Ni the b450 spectrum, and Zn the b460 spectrum. This finding highlights the salience of employing electromagnetic waves in assessing contamination in plants. In this paper, the detection of the lunar surface soil permittivity with megahertz electromagnetic (EM) waves by spaceborne radar is studied based on the EM scattering theory, the Boltzmann-Shukla equations, and the improved scattering matrix method (ISMM). The reflection characteristics of the lunar surface soil subject to megahertz waves are analyzed through the EM scattering theory and expressed by the lunar surface soil permittivity. Then, the lunar ionosphere is assumed to be composed of dusty plasma, and its EM characteristics are described with the Boltzmann-Shukla equations. Finally, the transmission and reflection characteristics of the propagation of EM waves in the lunar ionosphere are numerically calculated with ISMM. Thus, the complex permittivity of lunar surface soil is obtained. In addition, the effects of detection environment situations, such as the lunar illumination intensity, characteristics of the lunar dust and dust charging process in the lunar ionosphere, on the amplitude and phase of EM waves are also investigated in this study. The simulation results show that an EM wave at a high frequency induces a strong effective wave with a stable phase shift and a significantly small interferential wave. Moreover, the lunar illumination is more effective under EM waves in low frequency bands; the characteristics of the lunar dust have a notable influence on the transmission and absorption coefficients of the effective waves. These conclusions help in real applications involving the detection of the lunar surface soil permittivity by spaceborne radar in various lunar environments.

The neutrinos of cosmic radiation, due to interaction with any known medium in which the Cherenkov detector is used, produce energy radiation phenomena in the form of a Cherenkov cone, in very large frequency spectrum. These neutrinos carry with them the information about the phenomena that produced them and by detecting the electromagnetic energies generated by the Cherenkov cone, we can find information about the phenomena that formed in the universe, at a much greater distance, than possibility of actually detection with current technologies. At present, a very high number of sensors for detection electromagnetic energy is required. Thus, some sensors may detect very low energy levels, which can lead to the erroneous determination of the Cherenkov cone, thus leading to information errors. As a novelty, we propose, to use these sensors for determination of the dielectrically permittivity of any known medium in which the Cherenkov detector is used, by preliminary measurements, the subsequent simulation of the data and the reconstruction of the Cherenkov cone, leading to a significant reduction of problems and minimizing the number of sensors, implicitly the cost reductions. At the same time, we offer the possibility of reconstructing the Cherenkov cone outside the detector volume.

This study investigates variations in the velocity and sensitivity of electromagnetic waves in transmission lines configured in defective model piles for the detection of necking defects containing soil. Experiments are performed with model piles containing defects filled with different materials, such as air, sands, and clay. Five different types of transmission lines are configured in model piles. The electromagnetic waves are generated and detected using a time domain reflectometer. The velocity of electromagnetic waves is highest when the defect is filled with air, and it decreases with an increase in the water content. The velocity is lowest when the defect is filled with clay. The sensitivity of transmission lines for detecting defects decreases with an increase in soil water contents. The transmission line with a single electrical wire and epoxy-coated rebar exhibits the highest sensitivity, followed by that with three and two parallel electrical wires. Transmission lines with a single electrical wire and uncoated rebar and those with two parallel electrical wires wrapped with a sheath exhibit poor sensitivity when the defect is filled with clay. This study demonstrates that electromagnetic waves can be effective tools for detecting necking defects with wet and conductive soils in bored piles.

This study aims to investigate the relationship between the steel fibers and the electromagnetic wave shielding effectiveness of a high-performance fiber-reinforced cementitious composite (HPFRCC). The distribution characteristics of the steel fibers and the variation of the electrical conductivity of HPFRCC as a function of the fiber content were quantified based on micro computed tomography (CT) and impedance measurements to determine their correlations with the electromagnetic shielding effectiveness. The impedance results showed that no electrical network was formed in the composite by the steel fibers and it is difficult to manufacture HPFRCC with high-electrical conductivity using steel fibers alone without CNTs or other carbon-based materials. For the steel fiber content of greater than 0.5%, the number of contact points between the steel fibers increased significantly, and the relationship between the fiber content and the number of contact points was observed. Despite the improvement of the electrical conductivity owing to the presence of the steel fibers and to the increase in the contact points between the steel fibers, the shielding effectiveness did not increase further for the steel fiber contents equal or above 1.5%. Consequently, it was found that the factor that controls the shielding effectiveness of HPFRCC is not the electrical network of the steel fibers, but the degree of the dispersion of the individual steel fibers.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is widely used in pattern recognition and positioning. In most of the geological exploration applications, it needs to locate and identify underground objects according to electromagnetic wave characteristics from the ground-penetrating radar (GPR) images. Currently, a few robust AI approach can detect targets by real-time with high precision or automation for GPR images recognition. This paper proposes an approach that can be used to identify parabolic targets with different sizes and underground soil or concrete structure voids based on you only look once (YOLO) v3. With the TensorFlow 1.13.0 developed by Google, we construct YOLO v3 neural network to realize real-time pattern recognition of GPR images. We propose the specific coding method for the GPR image samples in Yolo V3 to improve the prediction accuracy of bounding boxes. At the same time, K-means algorithm is also applied to select anchor boxes to improve the accuracy of positioning hyperbolic vertex. For some instances electromagnetic-vacillated signals may occur, which refers to multiple parabolic electromagnetic waves formed by strong conductive objects among soils or overlapping waveforms. This paper deals with the vacillating signal similarity intersection over union (IoU) (V-IoU) methods. Experimental result shows that the V-IoU combined with non-maximum suppression (NMS) can accurately frame targets in GPR image and reduce the misidentified boxes as well. Compared with the single shot multi-box detector (SSD), YOLO v2, and Faster-RCNN, the V-IoU YOLO v3 shows its superior performance even when implemented by CPU. It can meet the real-time output requirements by an average 12 fps detected speed. In summary, this paper proposes a simple and high-precision real-time pattern recognition method for GPR imagery, and promoted the application of artificial intelligence or deep learning in the field of the geophysical science.

Transition metals and carbon materials are known as electromagnetic wave (EMW) nemesis, which can effectively attenuate EMW in the 2-18 GHz frequency band. Herein, three typical transition metal (Fe, Co, Ni) are freely combined into three layered double hydroxides (LDHs) through hydrothermal method and successfully grown in situ on the surface of short carbon fibers (SCFs). The SEM images show that although the three LDHs (CoNi-LDHs, FeNi-LDHs and FeCo-LDHs) are all sheet-like structures, their respective morphologies are completely different and each has its own merits. After calcination treatment at 500 °C, their distinct morphologies are basically retained, while the EMW absorption properties are greatly improved dramatically. Their effective absorption bandwidth (f e ) (RL ≤ -10 dB) reached 3.68 GHz, 1.68 GHz and 4.48 GHz at thicknesses of 2.2 mm, 2.2 mm and 2.0 mm, respectively. This study seeks to assess the reaction of the eggplant (Solanum melongena L.) to soil samples contaminated. Following, cultivation, growth, and harvest, the plant samples were prepared and maximum absorption rates of heavy metals were measured in both leaf and fruit. The estimated daily intake (EDI), the target hazard quotient (THQ), and the bio-concentration factor (BCF) were measured at various intervals during the growth period of the plant. Spectral analysis was also performed to assess the reaction of target crops to heavy metals. The results showed that in the second and third stages of plant growth, the THQ values were more than 1 for infected plants with Cd, Pb, and Zn. According to results from the BCF analysis, the absorption rate in Pb, during the growth stages was relatively high, in crops contaminated by Ni was around 1 in the second and third stages, and in plants contaminated by Cd was extremely high. All crops contaminated by heavy metals showed higher reflection rates in the 400-500 and 600-700 nm range. So, using electromagnetic waves during different stages of growth, the reaction of eggplant cultivated in soil samples contaminated by heavy metals is predictable.

Hierarchically three-dimensional (3D) micro-nanostructures have promising applications in multifarious fields. Herein, we report a general strategy, that is, in situ catalysis process, for fabrication of nitrogen-doped carbon nanotube (NCNT) arrays on one-dimensional (1D) nitrogen-doped carbon (NC) skeletons. The NCNT arrays branch out from the 1D NC surfaces, resulting in the formation of hierarchically 3D micro-nanostructures. The strategy is involved in the pyrolysis of M-precursor (M = Fe, Co, and Ni) nanowires with the assistance of dicyandiamide. During the synthesis process, the metal components in the precursors serve as catalysts for growing NCNTs, while dicyandiamide provides carbon and nitrogen sources. With the ongoing reaction, the NCNTs were catalytically grown and branched out from 1D NC skeletons. Through the strategy, three kinds of hierarchically 3D structures with encapsulated Fe/Fe 3 C, Co, and Ni nanoparticles, respectively, were fabricated successfully. As functional materials for attenuating electromagnetic wave energy, these hierarchically 3D structures exhibit satisfactory performances even at a low matching thickness, exceeding most of the carbon-based materials. Typically, the minimal reflection losses of the 3D structures can reach -10.0 dB even as the matching thickness is in the range of 1.4-2.0 mm. Experimental results demonstrate that the excellent attenuation properties toward electromagnetic wave energy are relative to high conduction loss at a low frequency and high dielectric relaxations at a high frequency as well as better impedance matching with the input impedance of the free space. Our method presented here opens a general way for the development of hierarchically 3D carbon-based micro-nanostructures for their practical applications.

Cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) is a near room-temperature ionized gas composed of highly reactive species. CAP also generates thermal radiation, ultraviolet radiation, and electromagnetic (EM) waves. So far, nearly all biological effects of CAP have relied on the chemical factors in CAP. Here, we first show that the EM emission from CAP can lead to the death of melanoma cells via a transbarrier contactless method. Compared with reactive species, the effect of the physical factors causes much stronger growth inhibition on a reactive species-resistant melanoma cell line B16F10. Such a physically triggered growth inhibition is due to a new cell death type, characterized by the rapid leakage of bulk solutions from the cells, resulting in cytoplasm shrinkage and bubbling on the cell membrane. The physically based CAP-triggered cell death can occur even there is a macroscale gap between the bulk CAP and cells, which includes an air gap (∼8 mm) and a dielectric material of the dish or plate (∼1 mm). Either a too large or a too small gap will inhibit such cell death. The physically triggered cellular pressure may cause the bubbling on cells, which can be inhibited in a hypotonic environment via the extracellular osmotic pressure. This study builds a foundation to use CAP as a physically based noninvasive cancer treatment.

The stability of tunnels and rock slopes is adversely affected by defects in rock bolts. This study investigates the suitability of the smart sensing method using electromagnetic waves for inspecting defects in rock bolts. Experiments were performed with one fully grouted and eight defective rock bolts, out of which five have non-grouted parts at the ends with different non-grouted ratios, and three have different types of voids. Electromagnetic waves were generated and detected using a time domain reflectometer by configuring two-conductor transmission lines in the rock bolts. Results show that electromagnetic waves are reflected both at defects and ends of rock bolts. The electromagnetic wave velocity increases with an increase in the non-grouted ratio and decreases when rock bolts are embedded in a concrete block simulating rock mass. The estimated locations of defects found by electromagnetic waves are in good agreement with actual defect locations. This study demonstrates that smart sensing using electromagnetic waves is an effective method for inspecting and determining defect locations and the non-grouted ratio of rock bolts.

The amount of technological products including television, radio transmitters, and mobile phone that have entered our daily life has increased in recent years. But these devices may cause adverse effects on human health. Electromagnetic shielding fabrics may limit and inhibit electromagnetic waves. Aim of our study was to evaluate electromagnetic wave blocking performance of nonwoven textile surfaces on zebrafish embryos that were exposed to electromagnetic waves at specific frequencies. Oxidant-antioxidant system parameters were evaluated spectrophotometrically. The expressions of tp53 and casp3a were evaluated by RT-PCR. Results showed that electromagnetic shielding fabrics produced as conductive nonwoven textile surfaces improved oxidant-antioxidant status and tp53 expression that were impaired in electromagnetic waves exposed zebrafish embryos. Also, electromagnetic shielding fabrics decreased casp3a expression responsible for the execution phase of apoptosis that increased in electromagnetic waves exposed zebrafish embryos.

Transient Radar Method (TRM) was recently proposed as a novel contact-free method for the characterization of multilayer dielectric structures including the geometric details. In this paper, we discuss and quantify the intrinsic and systematic errors of TRM. Also, solutions for mitigating these problems are elaborated extensively. The proposed solution for error correction will be applied to quantify experimentally the thickness of several single-layer dielectric structures with thicknesses varying from larger to smaller than the wavelength. We will show how the error correction method allows sub-wavelength thickness measurements around λ / 5 .

Radiofrequency electromagnetic radiation emitted from Wi-Fi devices is nonionizing radiation. The frequencies used in wireless technology are similar to those applied in mobile telephony. Due to the much lower output power of devices using Wi-Fi compared to mobile phones, the degree of exposure to radiation is also lower. Most of the research on Wi-Fi has been carried out in less favorable or adverse conditions, involving higher power values of devices (peak values instead of average values) and smaller distances of working devices from measuring points. None of the studies conducted so far have indicated that there were the exceedances of the permissible values of radiofrequency electromagnetic radiation contained in the Polish and global legal regulations. Similar to the research related to the impact of mobile telephony on human health, the studies conducted until now focusing on exposure to Wi-Fi are considered ambiguous as they do not give a definitive answer on the possible negative (including carcinogenic) effects on human health. Because of the continuous development of wireless networks, there is a need for further research on this topic. To dynamically monitor the horizontal well, we studied the oil-water two-phase water holdup detection method based on transmission lines, and designed a micro-sensor and a sensor-array water holdup detection tool. We modeled the relationship of the dielectric constant of the transmission line filling medium and the amplitude and phase shift of the electromagnetic wave signal on the transmission line by using the time-domain analysis. We proposed a novel method to measure the water holdup of oil-water mixtures based on the phase shift of signals on the conical spiral transmission line. Furthermore, we simulated and optimized the structural parameters by software simulation, and developed a small conical spiral water holdup sensor suitable for arraying. The single sensor with detection circuits can achieve the full scale (water holdup from 0% to 100%) measurement with resolution better than 3%. On this basis, 12 sensors are used to develop a clock-like sensor-array water holdup detection tool, realizing the array detection of the distribution of the cross-section medium in horizontal wells.

Fabricating materials with customized characteristics for both electromagnetic (EM) and acoustic waves remain a significant challenge using the current technology, since the demand of multiphysical manipulation requires a variety of material parameters that are hard to satisfy in nature. However, the emergence of artificially structured materials provides a new degree of freedom to tailor the wave-matter interactions in dual physical domains at the subwavelength scale. Here, a bifunctional digital coding metamaterial (MM) is proposed to engineer the propagation behaviors of EM and acoustic waves simultaneously and independently. Four kinds of rigid pillars with various material properties are employed to serve as 1-bit reflection-type digital meta-atoms with antiphase responses in both frequency spectra, thus offering the opportunities for independent field control as desired. The MM demonstrates excellent performance of scattering manipulations from 5700 to 8000 Hz in the acoustic region and 5.80-6.15 GHz in the microwave region. The bifunctional MM is verified through full-wave simulations and experimental measurements with good agreement, which stands out as a powerful tool for related applications in the future.

With the booming microwave and terahertz technology for communication, detection, and healthcare, the consequently increasingly complicated electromagnetic environment is in urgent need of high-performance microwave and terahertz absorption materials. However, it is still a huge challenge to achieve consecutively strong absorption in both microwave and terahertz regimes. Herein, an ultra-broadband and highly efficient absorber for both microwave and terahertz bands based on the monolithic three-dimensional cross-linked Fe 3 O 4 /graphene material (3DFG) is first reported. The 3DFG shows an incredible wide qualified absorption bandwidth (with reflection loss less than -10 dB) from 3.4 GHz to 2.5 THz, which is the best result in this area by far. Furthermore, the remarkable absorption performance can be maintained under oblique incidence, different compressive strains, and even after 200 compression/release cycles. The designed highly porous structure for minimizing surface reflection combined with the micro-macro integrated high lossy framework results in the excellent absorptivity, as verified by the terahertz time-domain spectroscopy technique. With these, the 3DFG achieves an unprecedentedly average absorption intensity of 38.0 dB, which is the maximum value among the broadband absorbers. In addition, its specific average microwave and terahertz absorption value is over 2 orders of magnitude higher than other kinds of reported materials. The results provide new insights for developing novel ultra-broadband absorbers with stronger reflection loss and wider absorption bandwidth.

In recent years, there has been a rapid increase in the number of electromagnetic radiation sources such as mobile phones and base stations of mobile telephony. This radiation has been classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer as a possible human carcinogen (group 2B). For this reason, many studies have been carried out on the impact of mobile telephony on human health. The largest of the experiments were carried out on animals. Due to the divergent results of many studies, there was no clear answer on the possible carcinogenic effects of this type of radiation on health. Detection of cancer shortly after an exposure is the most difficult task in analyzing the results. Some of the studies require repetition and verification of the results. In the case of negative effects of electromagnetic fields on brain activity, sleep, heart rate, cognitive function and blood pressure, no consistent evidence has been obtained either. In view of the increasing popularity of mobile phones, their location at short distances from the body (mainly the head) and the development of mobile phone technologies (which entails an increase in the number of base stations), further research, especially among young people, is needed. This article contains the ground and satellite meteorological data sets of clear-sky temperature events for five years (2012-2016) in Covenant University, Ota, Ogun State, Nigeria. The satellite data were obtained from Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) while the ground data information were acquired from Davis weather station data logger-vantage pro2. These data were acquired from propagation study that used same location (Lat: 6.67°N and Long: 3.23°E) for both satellite data and radiometer directed along the same path by providing information about the temperature. The data sets were assessed and evaluated by means of a descriptive statistics. There was perfect agreement between the two data. The peak temperature events occurs between the months of November and April for the five years of observation for both Ota and AIRS Satellite. The data from this article can be used for further studies on non-rainy attenuation effect in the study area.

Here, we report a simple method to grow thin MoS 2 nanosheets (NSs) on the ultralong nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes through anion-exchange reaction. The MoS 2 NSs are grown on ultralong nitrogen-doped carbon nanotube surfaces, leading to an interesting three-dimensional hierarchical structure. The fabricated hybrid nanotubes have a length of approximately 100 μm, where the MoS 2 nanosheets have a thickness of less than 7.5 nm. The hybrid nanotubes show excellent electromagnetic wave attenuation performance, with the effective absorption bandwidth of 5.4 GHz at the thicknesses of 2.5 mm, superior to the pure MoS 2 nanosheets and the MoS 2 nanosheets grown on the short N-doped carbon nanotube surfaces. The experimental results indicate that the direct growth of MoS 2 on the ultralong nitrogen-doped carbon nanotube surfaces is a key factor for the enhanced electromagnetic wave attenuation property. The results open the avenue for the development of ultralong transition metal dichalcogenides for electromagnetic wave absorbers.

Herein we develop a facile strategy for fabricating nickel particle encapsulated in few-layer nitrogen-doped graphene supported by graphite carbon sheets as a high-performance electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorbing material. The obtained material exhibits sheetlike morphology with a lateral length ranging from a hundred nanometers to 2 μm and a thickness of about 23 nm. Nickel nanoparticles with a diameter of approximately 20 nm were encapsulated in about six layers of nitrogen-doped graphene. As applied for electromagnetic absorbing material, the heteronanostructures exhibit excellent electromagnetic wave absorption property, comparable to most EMW absorbing materials previously reported. Typically, the effective absorption bandwidth (the frequency region falls within the reflection loss below -10 dB) is up to 8.5 GHz at the thicknesses of 3.0 mm for the heteronanostructures with the optimized Ni content. Furthermore, two processes, carbonization at a high temperature and subsequent treatment in hot acid solution, were involved in the preparation of the heteronanostructures, and thus, mass production was achieved easily, facilitating their practical applications.

This article considers the possibility of excitation of acoustic oscillations in a cell by electromagnetic waves. In this process, not only the frequency but also the length of a wave is of great importance. It is also reported that the pulse signal can be more effective than harmonic signal, and the pulse length is not essential. In accordance with this fact, it is possible to explain the biological effects of electromagnetic waves and to develop new medical electronic devices. In this work, a microwave welding method has been used for the construction of chemical Ni-C bonding at the interface between carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and metal Ni to provide a different surface electron distribution, which determined the electromagnetic (EM) wave absorption properties based on a surface plasmon resonance mechanism. Through a serial of detailed examinations, such as X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Raman spectrum, the as-expected chemical Ni-C bonding between CNTs and metal Ni has been confirmed. And the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller and surface zeta potential measurements uncovered the great evolution of structure and electronic density compared with CNTs, metal Ni, and Ni-CNT composite without Ni-C bonding. Correspondingly, except the EM absorption due to CNTs and metal Ni in the composite, another wide and strong EM absorption band ranging from 10 to 18 GHz was found, which was induced by the Ni-C bonded interface. With a thinner thickness and more exposed Ni-C interfaces, the Ni-CNT composite displayed less reflection loss.

Although cell phones have been used worldwide, some adverse and toxic effects were reported for this communication technology apparatus. To analyze in vivo effects of exposure to radiofrequency-electromagnetic field (RF-EMF) on protein expression in rat testicular proteome, 20 Sprague-Dawley rats were exposed to 900 MHz RF-EMF for 0, 1, 2, or 4 h/day for 30 consecutive days. Protein content of rat testes was separated by high-resolution two-dimensional electrophoresis using immobilized pH gradient (pI 4-7, 7 cm) and 12% acrylamide and identified by MALDI-TOF/TOF-MS. Two protein spots were found differentially overexpressed (P < 0.05) in intensity and volume with induction factors 1.7 times greater after RF-EMF exposure. After 4 h of daily exposure for 30 consecutive days, ATP synthase beta subunit (ASBS) and hypoxia up-regulated protein 1 precursor (HYOU1) were found to be significantly up-regulated. These proteins affect signaling pathways in rat testes and spermatogenesis and play a critical role in protein folding and secretion in the endoplasmic reticulum. Our results indicate that exposure to RF-EMF produces increases in testicular proteins in adults that are related to carcinogenic risk and reproductive damage. In light of the widespread practice of men carrying phones in their pockets near their gonads, where exposures can exceed as-tested guidelines, further study of these effects should be a high priority.

Hierarchical structured ZnFe 2 O 4 @SiO 2 @RGO core-shell nanocomposites were prepared via a "coating-coating" route, and its structure, composition and electromagnetic properties were characterized. Compared with the binary composites of ZnFe 2 O 4 @SiO 2 , the hierarchical ZnFe 2 O 4 @SiO 2 @RGO ternary composites exhibited enhanced electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption properties in terms of the effective bandwidth and minimum reflection loss (RL). Furthermore, EMW absorption properties of the prepared samples can be tuned by changing RGO content and thickness of SiO 2 layer to reach the best impedance match. The minimum RL of the sample with a thickness of 2.8 mm can reach -43.9 dB at 13.9 GHz, and its effective bandwidth (RL ≤ -10 dB) was up to 6 GHz. Hence, the obtained products can be a new candidate for lightweight EMW absorbing materials.

Corporate establishment of US Food & Drug Administration approved pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMFs) for clinical applications has been achieved. However, optimization of PEMFs for improvement in efficacy for current indications, in addition to the expansion into new indications, is not trivial. Moving directly into a clinical trial can be costly and carries little guarantee for success, necessitating the need for preclinical studies as supported by this review of the extensive corporate preclinical experience by Orthofix, Inc. The Translational Potential of this Article: This review illustrates the need to gain enough in vitro / in vivo knowledge of specific PEMF signals and its target tissue interaction to enable a high success rate in clinical trials.

A highly sensitive impedimetric bio-chip based on vertically aligned multiwall carbon nanotubes (VAMWCNTs), was applied in direct interaction with lung cancer cells. Our tool provided both inducing and monitoring the bioelectrical changes in the cells initiated by electromagnetic (EM) wave stimulation. EM wave of 940MHz frequency with different intensities was used. Here, wave ablation might accumulate electrical charge on the tips of nanotubes penetrated into cell's membrane. The charge might induce ionic exchanges into the cell and cause alterations in electrical states of the membrane. Transmembrane electrostatic/dynamic states would be strongly affected due to such exchanges. Our novel modality was that, the cells' vitality changes caused by charge inductions were electrically detected with the same nanotubes in the architecture of electrodes for impedance measurement. The responses of the sensor were confirmed by electron and florescent microscopy images as well as biological assays. In summation, our method provided an effective biochip for enhancing and detecting external EM stimulation on the cells useful for future diagnostic and therapeutic applications, such as wave-guided drug-resistance breakage., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier B.V. Objective: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the feasibility of the SAVI SCOUT surgical guidance system, which uses a nonradioactive infrared-activated electromagnetic wave reflector, to localize and excise nonpalpable breast lesions. We evaluated the system's use in 15 nonpalpable breast lesions in 13 patients., Conclusion: Image-guided placement was successful for 15 of 15 (100%) reflectors. The final pathologic analysis found that lesion excision was successful, including five malignancies with negative margins. No patients required reexcision or experienced complications. SAVI SCOUT is a feasible method for breast lesion localization and excision.

This paper develops a topology optimization procedure for three-dimensional electromagnetic waves with an edge element-based finite-element method. In contrast to the two-dimensional case, three-dimensional electromagnetic waves must include an additional divergence-free condition for the field variables. The edge element-based finite-element method is used to both discretize the wave equations and enforce the divergence-free condition. For wave propagation described in terms of the magnetic field in the widely used class of non-magnetic materials, the divergence-free condition is imposed on the magnetic field. This naturally leads to a nodal topology optimization method. When wave propagation is described using the electric field, the divergence-free condition must be imposed on the electric displacement. In this case, the material in the design domain is assumed to be piecewise homogeneous to impose the divergence-free condition on the electric field. This results in an element-wise topology optimization algorithm. The topology optimization problems are regularized using a Helmholtz filter and a threshold projection method and are analysed using a continuous adjoint method. In order to ensure the applicability of the filter in the element-wise topology optimization version, a regularization method is presented to project the nodal into an element-wise physical density variable.
