Introduction: Vaccinations are important for informal caregivers and their care recipients. Mental health problems are common among care givers. The aim of this study was to investigate vaccination readiness in informal caregivers and associations with mental health issues. Associations between vaccination readiness in informal caregivers and the vaccination status of their aged care recipients were examined., Methods: Within the multicenter prospective registry study 'Bavarian ambulatory Covid-19 Monitor (BaCoM) ', informal caregivers were asked for symptoms of depression (PHQ-9), burden of caretaking (BSFC-s), psychological antecedents of vaccination readiness (5C model) and previous Covid-19 infections of their care recipients. The vaccination status against Covid-19, seasonal influenza and pneumococcal disease was determined via vaccination certificates. Data analysis was performed using ordinal regressions and Mann-Whitney-U tests., Results: Data of n = 91 informal caregivers, associated with n = 84 care recipients were collected. Symptoms of depression were associated with reduced vaccination readiness (Calculation: p = 0.026, OR = 1.18), as well as the perceived burden of caretaking (Confidence: p = 0.006, OR = 0.88). A previous Covid-19 infection of the care recipients was associated with decreased vaccination readiness of informal caregivers (Median (Q1-Q3) Confidence: 5.0 (4.5-6.0) vs. 4.0 (3.0-5.0); Calculation: 5.0 (3.0-6.0) vs. 4.0 (1.0-5.0)). The vaccination status of the care recipients interrelated significantly with vaccination readiness of their informal caregivers (Confidence: p < 0.001; Complacency: p < 0.01; Constraints p < 0.05). No significant interrelations between vaccination readiness and the vaccination status against seasonal influenza or pneumococcal disease occurred., Conclusion: Mental health issues of informal caregivers seem to be associated with the actual vaccination status against Covid-19 in their care recipients. Background: In the context of the Covid-19 pandemic, institutional measures were decreed to protect nursing home residents from infection. Their appropriateness has been a subject of controversy. The aim of this work was to better understand the subjective perception of the protective measures during the Covid-19 pandemic by the nursing home residents in Bavaria and to shed light on the role of nursing staff and general practitioners in coping with the crisis., Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with residents of inpatient long-term care facilities. Data analysis was carried out by means of structured content analysis according to Kuckartz., Results: A total of ten nursing home residents with various degrees of care were interviewed, five of whom had already been infected with Covid-19 at the time of the survey. The respondents reported, on the one hand, their need for protection and, on the other hand, the isolation they experienced during the pandemic. Trust in the care provided by the nursing staff was emphasized. Introduction: People in need of care or support are severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. We lack valid data of long-term assessments. We present a register study to detect the physical and psychosocial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on people in need of care or support in Bavaria, Germany. To describe the persons' life conditions comprehensively, we assess the perspectives and needs of the respective care teams too. Results will serve as evidence-based source to manage the pandemic and long-term prevention strategies., Methods and Analysis: The 'Bavarian ambulatory COVID-19 Monitor' is a multicentre registry including a purposive sample of up to 1000 patient-participants across three study sites in Bavaria. The study group consists of 600 people in need of care with a positive SARS-CoV-2 PCR test. Control group 1 comprises 200 people in need of care with a negative SARS-CoV-2 PCR test, while control group 2 comprises 200 people with a positive SARS-CoV-2 PCR test but are not in need of care. We assess the clinical course of infection, psychosocial aspects and care needs using validated measures. Follow-up is every 6 months for up to 3 years. Additionally, we assess up to 400 people linked to these patient-participants (caregivers, general practitioners (GPs)) for their health and needs. Main analyses are stratified by level of care I-V (I=minor/V=most severe impairment of independence), inpatient/outpatient care setting, sex and age. We use descriptive and inferential statistics to analyse cross-sectional data and changes over time. In qualitative interviews with 60 stakeholders (people in need of care, caregivers, GPs, politicians), we explore interface problems of different functional logics, of everyday and professional perspectives., Ethics and Dissemination: The Institutional Review Board of the University Hospital LMU Munich (#20-860) and the study sites (Universities of Wurzburg and Erlangen) approved the protocol. Objectives: This pilot study analyses the effect and feasibility of hydrotherapeutic Kneipp arm affusions on secretory immunoglobulin A (sIgA) and classic cold symptoms in children 3-6 years of age., Study Design: A controlled, non-randomized, clinical pilot study was undertaken., Intervention: This descriptive hydrotherapeutic intervention treated children aged 3-6 with Kneipp arm affusions over four weeks. The control group received no intervention. At baseline and after the intervention, secretory IgA was measured, cold symptoms were assessed by means of the Common Cold Questionnaire (CCQ), and a semi-structured follow-up qualitative interview of the parents in the intervention group was conducted on acceptance and susceptibility to infection of the respiratory tract., Results: Fifteen participants were included in the intervention group and 15 were in the control group. The Kneipp arm affusions intervention was conducted at home and well-accepted by the children. No differences developed between the groups regarding sIgA. Comparing the symptoms by means of CCQ did not show symptoms of respiratory tract infections. In the intervention group, rhinitis occurred less frequently (26.7 % vs. 66.7 %, p = 0.057). In the qualitative analysis, 9/13 parents described an improvement in susceptibility to infections of the respiratory tract., Conclusion: Due to the pilot character of this study, home hydrotherapy (Kneipp arm affusions) in healthy children is feasible but did not influence sIgA levels. The influence on infections of the respiratory tract after the intervention phase should be interpreted carefully. Purpose: For some years now, a programme for the use of integrative care in paediatric oncology has been established in a German university hospital and offers patients and parents complementary treatment options. According to their medical condition and wishes. A variety of external applications such as medical wraps, warm oil compresses and rhythmic embrocations are offered. This article analyses how patients and parents perceived and experienced the integrative care program., Methods: In this qualitative study, data consists of field notes conducted through participant observation, informal conversations and interviews with parents (n = 25) during the implementation phase of the program. Data was analysed on basis of thematic analysis and organized with the analysis software MAXQDA., Results: Parents and families intuitively developed strategies for dealing with crisis situations such as childhood cancer. In addition, many of the families brought with them a wealth of experience in complementary medicine. Parents perceived the integrative care treatments as soothing, relaxing and pain-relieving for their child. Patients could relax and side effects of chemotherapy were alleviated. However, children, who undergoing chemotherapy were not always open for physical touch and thus sometimes also rejected the treatments sometimes., Conclusion: The analysed integrative care programme is perceived as a strong patient and family-centred approach of support during the oncological paediatric treatment. From a salutogenetic viewpoint, this program aims to strengthen the dimension of manageability within the concept of sense of coherence. The bifunctional enzyme UDP-N-acetylglucosamine 2-epimerase/N-acetylmannosamine kinase (GNE) is the key enzyme for the biosynthesis of sialic acids, terminal components of glycoconjugates associated with a variety of physiological and pathological processes. Different protein isoforms of human and mouse GNE, deriving from splice variants, were predicted recently: GNE1 represents the GNE protein described in several studies before, GNE2 and GNE3 are proteins with extended and deleted N-termini, respectively. hGNE2, recombinantly expressed in insect and mamalian cells, displayed selective reduction of UDP-GlcNAc 2-epimerase activity by the loss of its tetrameric state, which is essential for full enzyme activity. hGNE3, which had to be expressed in Escherichia coli, only possessed kinase activity, whereas mGNE1 and mGNE2 showed no significant differences. Our data therefore suggest a role of GNE1 in basic supply of cells with sialic acids, whereas GNE2 and GNE3 may have a function in fine-tuning of the sialic acid pathway.
