Commelinales belongs to the commelinids clade, which also comprises Poales that includes the most important monocot species, such as rice, wheat, and maize. No reference genome of Commelinales is currently available. Water hyacinth (Pontederia crassipes or Eichhornia crassipes), a member of Commelinales, is one of the devastating aquatic weeds, although it is also grown as an ornamental and medical plant. Here, we present a chromosome-scale reference genome of the tetraploid water hyacinth with a total length of 1.22 Gb (over 95% of the estimated size) across 8 pseudochromosome pairs. With the representative genomes, we reconstructed a phylogeny of the commelinids, which supported Zingiberales and Commelinales being sister lineages of Arecales and shed lights on the controversial relationship of the orders. We also reconstructed ancestral karyotypes of the commelinids clade and confirmed the ancient commelinids genome having 8 chromosomes but not 5 as previously reported. Gene family analysis revealed contraction of disease-resistance genes during polyploidization of water hyacinth, likely a result of fitness requirement for its role as a weed. Genetic diversity analysis using 9 water hyacinth lines from 3 continents (South America, Asia, and Europe) revealed very closely related nuclear genomes and almost identical chloroplast genomes of the materials, as well as provided clues about the global dispersal of water hyacinth. Aim: This study aims to investigate the possible association between digit ratio (2D:4D) and match-play success (MPS) in junior tennis players. In addition, we consider the possible explanatory pathways of these associations in relation to psychological, strength, power, and hormonal parameters., Methods: We performed a cross-sectional study, with a sample comprised of 64 male junior tennis players (11-18 years old). Digit ratio was calculated from direct finger measurements. In addition, we measured the ratio of wins by number of matches played in 5 years of official competition (MPS), handgrip strength (HGS), standing long jump (SLJ), training (in weekly hours), and expertise (number of years in official competition). Salivary testosterone and cortisol levels were measured before and after physical "challenge" tests., Results: The 2D:4D correlated negatively with HGS and SLJ. MPS was also negatively associated with 2D:4D, but was positively correlated to HGS, expertise, training, and self-confidence (SC). Multiple linear regression showed 2D:4D and expertise were associated with MPS (43%-54%). None of the physical, or hormonal variables tested explained the links between 2D:4D and MPS., Conclusion: Therefore, the specific fitness components influenced by prenatal androgenization that moderate sports success remain unknown. COVID-19 Related Long-Term Taste Impairment (CRLTTI) is a condition that can be expressed after COVID-19 contagion, lasting for months or even years, affecting the routine and quality of life of individuals. Participants expressing CRLTTI, with a minimum of 2 months, attested by PCR-RT test were assessed for taste and smell, and underwent experimental treatments in 6 distinct groups: Photobiomodulation (PBM) in tongue dorsum and lateral (660 nm, 808 nm, association of 660 and 808 nm), Transmucosal Laser Irradiation of Blood (TLIB)-ventral surface of tongue (660 nm), B complex supplementation, and Sham laser. No intergroup statistical differences were observed at the final evaluation, despite the tendencies of better results with PBM and TLIB observed. PBM, TLIB, and B complex might be treatment options in the management of CRLTTI, despite the lack of total remission of taste and smell perception after 8 sessions (PBM and TLIB) or 30 days of B complex supplementation., (© 2023. Introduction:  The COVID-19 infection triggered in some patients a prolonged reduction in the perception of both gustatory and olfactory senses (ageusia and anosmia). These symptoms could be manifested during the first days after the contagion, acting as predictors of COVID-19 infection, and additionally, they could be the only symptoms manifested at all. Clinical resolution of anosmia and ageusia was expected to occur within a few weeks, yet in some cases, patients began to demonstrate COVID-19-related long-term taste impairment (CRLTTI), a condition that can persist for longer than two months, contradicting initial evidence.  Objectives: The authors' aimed to describe the characteristics of the sample of 31 participants with COVID-19-related long-term taste impairment, and their capacity to quantify taste and rate their smell perception.  Material and Methods: Participants were submitted to a taste evaluation of four hyper-concentrated tastes perceived by the tongue (0-10), self-reported their smell (0-10), and answered a semi-structured questionnaire.  Results: Different tastes seemed to be affected differently by COVID-19, despite the lack of statistical relevance observed in this study. Dysgeusia was only expressed in bitter, sweet, and acidic tastes. The mean age observed was 40.2 (SD 12.06) years, with women representing 71% of the sample. Taste impairment persisted for an average period of 10.8 months (SD 5.7). Self-reported smell impairment was reported by the majority of participants with taste impairment. Non-vaccinated people represented 80.6% of the sample.  Conclusions: COVID-19 infection could trigger taste and smell disturbances that lasted as long as 24 months. CRLTTI seems not to affect the four main taste perceptions (hyper-concentrated) equally. Women represented the majority of the sample, with an average age of 40 years (SD 12.06). Objective: The present study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the application of photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) in the prevention of recurrent herpes labialis (RHL) through a randomized controlled clinical trial. Background data: RHL is a lifelong infection that effects patients' quality of life. In the literature PBMT has shown positive results preventing RHL, decreasing recurrences and severity of lesions. Despite the good results reported, there are still few controlled clinical studies published on the subject. Methods: For this study, 158 volunteers were recruited and were randomly divided into three study groups: Laser 1-1 J/point (L1J): n  = 61, Laser 2-2 J/point (L2J): n  = 50, and placebo-0 J/point: n  = 47. The treatment consisted of a protocol of 15 sessions throughout 6 months and 2 years of follow-up posttreatment. Results: The results showed that L1J presented the most satisfactory results concerning the reduction of the number of lesions per year and less severity of recurrences in the long-term evaluation when compared with L2J. Both Laser Groups (L1J and L2J) were statistically more efficient than placebo in all aspects analyzed. All patients who received laser treatment (L1J and L2J) and presented recurrences had significant improvement in frequency and/or severity of lesions. No patient had side effects from treatment. Conclusions: PBMT can be effective in the reduction of the frequency of recurrences of RHL and in the severity of postirradiation lesions that may appear.

Photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) has demonstrated efficacy in the prevention and treatment of oral mucositis (OM) in hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT). However, based on the cell stimulation properties, its long-term safety has been questioned, mainly in relation to risk for secondary malignancies in the oral cavity. The aim of this study was to investigate if different PBMT protocols for OM control have association with immediate and late adverse effects in HCT patients. Data on autologous and allogeneic transplantation, conditioning regimen, PBMT protocols, and OM severity were retrospectively collected from medical and dental records. Presence of secondary malignancies in the oral cavity was surveyed during a 15-year follow-up. Impact of OM on overall survival was also analyzed. Different PBMT protocols for prevention and treatment of OM were recorded over the years. Severe OM (grades 3 and 4) was infrequently observed. When present, we observed a significant decrease of the overall survival. No immediate adverse effect and secondary malignancy was associated to PBMT. In conclusion, the PBMT protocols used in the study were considered safe. The low frequency of severe OM observed encourages the implementation of this technique, with a special emphasis on the dosimetry adjustments focused on the HCT context., (© 2021. To evaluate the effect of Er:YAG laser conditioning of a glass-infiltrated alumina-based zirconia-reinforced ceramic on its flexural strength and on bonding to a resin cement. Sixteen blocks (5 × 5 × 4 mm) and 50 discs (Ø 12 mm, 1 mm thickness) of In-Ceram Zirconia (ICZ) obtained from CAD-CAM blocks were infiltrated with glass. For the microtensile bond strength (μTBS) test, all blocks were treated with aluminum oxide (AOX) and divided into 4 groups (n = 4): G1 (AOX), no combined surface treatment; G2 (ROC), tribochemical silica-coating; G3 (EY200), Er:YAG laser 200 mJ/15 Hz; and G4 (EY250), Er:YAG laser 250 mJ/10 Hz. The ceramic blocks were silanated and cemented with a resin cement (Panavia F2.0/Kuraray) to composite resin blocks and subjected to the μTBS test. For the flexural strength evaluation, the discs were divided into 5 groups (n = 10) as described above, in addition to a control group (G5 - CTRL, mirror-polished without further treatment). Each surface treatment was submitted to qualitative evaluation under SEM. One-way ANOVA (α = 5%) revealed the highest bond strength value for EY200 with no significant difference from ROC. The groups AOX and EY250 showed similar μTBS values that were statistically lower than those of EY200. For flexural strength, ROC was the only group with significantly lower values when compared with the CTRL. The use of Er:YAG laser at 200 mJ/15 Hz can be considered an innovative and effective alternative for surface conditioning of ICZ since it did not reduce the flexural strength of the ceramic and improved the resin cement bond to this substrate., (© 2020. Background: Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 (HSV-1) is one of the most widespread infections that can effect the orofacial region. Recurrent infection is considered a life-long oral health problem, leading to pain, discomfort, and social restriction due to esthetic features when active. Effective therapies are needed. This study aimed to compare photodynamic therapy (PDT), Topical Acyclovir (AC), and the association of both in the healing process and self-reported symptomologies of HSV-1 recurrences., Methods: Patients were randomly assigned into 3 groups (n = 25): PDT (low-power laser, 660 nm, 40 mW, 120 J/cm 2 , 4.8 J, 120 s per point) and methylene blue (0.005 %) as photosensitizer; AC (5%); PDT + AC.Data concerning lesion size, healing time, and self-reported healing parameters, such as pain, tingling, and edema were taken every day up to complete healing for all studied groups., Results: There was no significant difference in healing time and pain between groups. AC group showed a significant minor reduction of the lesion compared to the AC-PDT group on day 1. Regarding edema and tingling, the comparison of treatments showed a statistical difference only on day 1, where PDT showed better results., Conclusion: With all the limitations of this study, it can be concluded that only on day 1 PDT showed positive effects in the treatment of herpes lesions in comparison to AC., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier B.V. Background: Paralysis of the facial muscles produces functional and aesthetic disturbance that has a negative impact for the patient's quality of life. Objective: To evaluate the effects of a photobiomodulation (PBM) with low-level laser (LLL) on the treatment of a patient with 8 years of facial paralysis. Methods: PBM with two different wavelengths of LLL (660 and 808 nm), applied only on the affected side, three times a week for 8 consecutive weeks. Evaluations were performed before starting treatments, after the 12th session of treatment and after the 24th session, using the House-Brackmann scale and electroneuromyography. Results: The House-Brackmann and electroneuromyography tests showed improvements in the movement of the facial muscles when tested in the middle and at the end of the treatment with LLL. Conclusions: PBM with LLL at the wavelength of 660 and 808 nm with the parameters used in this case report was an effective and noninvasive treatment for facial paralysis in this long-standing, chronic case of 8 years.

This in vitro study aimed to analyze the physical and chemical characteristics of the hypersensitive human dentin-like surface after application of a bioactive glass (BG) paste (BG/Ac) irradiated or not with high-power lasers. Dentin specimens were treated with 17% Ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) solution to mimic a hypersensitive dentin and then submitted to neodymium: yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Nd:YAG) laser or CO 2 laser irradiation prior and after application of BG/Ac. Characterizations were performed by using X-ray diffraction, Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The results suggested that application of BG/Ac by itself caused some obstructions of dentinal tubules. Nd:YAG laser irradiation reduced the opening of the dentinal tubules with no changes in the collagen structure. CO 2 laser irradiation caused dentin melting and resolidification along with cracks and chemical changes in collagen fibers. However, when BG/Ac paste was irradiated with lasers, a sequence of surface reactions between glass and dentin interface led to the formation of an amorphous hydroxyapatite layer, similar to that of an inorganic component of the normal dentin. Moreover, BG/Ac was able to prevent the formation of cracks and degradation of collagen fibers caused by CO 2 irradiation. The interest of the scientific community for ultrasound techniques has increased in recent years due to its wide range of applications. A continuous effort of researchers and industries has been made in order to improve and increase the applicability of non-destructive evaluations (NDE). In this context, the monitoring of manufacturing processes, such as the grinding process, arises. This work proposes a novel technique of ultrasound monitoring (chirp-through-transmission) through low-cost piezoelectric diaphragms and digital signal processing. The proposed technique was applied to the monitoring of material removal during the grinding process. The technique is based on changes in ultrasonic waves when propagated through the material under study, with the difference that this technique does not use traditional parameters of ultrasonic techniques but digital signal processing (RMS and Counts). Furthermore, the novelty of the proposed technique is also the use of low-cost piezoelectric diaphragms in the emission and reception of ultrasonic waves, enabling the implementation of a low-cost monitoring system. The results show that the monitoring technique proposed in this work, when used in conjunction with the frequency band selection, is sensitive to the material removal in the grinding process and therefore presents an advance for monitoring the grinding processes.

In-office dental bleaching allows the dentist to have greater control of the procedure and prevents patients from ingesting chemicals. To obtain optimum results, in-office bleaching usually requires a longer period of application as well as changes of the bleaching agent applied to the tooth surfaces at each appointment. The objective of this case report was to assess, by means of a split-mouth design in a single patient, the final tooth color and tooth sensitivity resulting from 2 different bleaching protocols: 1 application of 35% hydrogen peroxide for 45 minutes and 3 applications of 35% hydrogen peroxide for 15 minutes each. Neither the patient nor 5 individuals who were blinded to the techniques noted a difference in the final esthetic results of the 2 protocols immediately after the procedure. In addition, the patient reported that no tooth sensitivity was associated with either protocol. The results of dental bleaching on both sides were maintained after 15 days. The results shown in the present case report suggest that there may be no need to renew the gel during in-office dental bleaching.

Objective: The aim of this article was to describe and discuss a clinical case in which the Nd:YAG laser and a desensitizing agent were associated in a protocol for dentin hypersensitivity (DH) in teeth with molar-incisor hypomineralization (MIH). Background data: DH is a common condition among the population, being one of the main reasons for patients to seek for a dental treatment. MIH can be considered a condition that induces DH. Methods: The patient was referred for evaluation, complaining of hypersensitivity during eating or drinking cold foods. Clinical evaluation revealed the presence of MIH on the first lower molars. Aiming to treat DH, two strategies for dentin desensitization were associated: the use of a high-power laser (Nd:YAG laser, 1.064 nm; Lares Research), with a 300 μm quartz optical fiber, 1 W of power, 100 mJ of energy, 10 Hz of repetition rate, and 85 J/cm 2 of energy density, followed by the application of two layers of a desensitizing agent (Gluma Desensitizer). Results: DH was evaluated immediately, after 1 week and after 1 month of the treatment. Clinical outcomes were satisfactory, confirming the efficacy and considerable durability of the protocol used for the reduction of DH originated from MIH. Conclusions: The association of Nd:YAG laser and a desensitizing agent for controlling DH was effective, showing to be an interesting protocol.

Background: Radiotherapy is one of the treatments for cancer, which leads to many oral side effects that affect the quality of life of the patient; among them, trismus is considered. Objective: Considering the various therapies to treat this collateral effect of radiotherapy, photobiomodulation (PBM) with low-level laser is a contemporary alternative. Methods: In this article, an all-clinical case report is presented in which the patient was given trismus after radiotherapy and PBM with low-level laser. The measurement of the buccal opening was evaluated in each treatment session with a digital caliper, and the pain was evaluated through the visual analog scale (VAS). Results: The efficacy of the PBM protocol on the trismus after radiotherapy was evidenced by the decrease of pain and increase of the buccal opening. Conclusions: The use of PBM with low-level laser is an option for the treatment of trimus after radiotherapy.

Background: Several photobiomodulation (PBM) protocols with low-power lasers have been reported for pain control and tissue repair in the postoperative period of oral surgeries. However, there are still no reports of a protocol for bichectomy surgeries' postoperative period., Objective: This article presents six reports of clinical cases in which bichectomy surgery was performed., Methods: In the postoperative period, three patients were submitted to PBM with low-power lasers, while three patients did not receive it. Facial edema was evaluated using a millimeter tape. Pain was determined using the visual analog scale., Results: Data of each clinical case were evaluated in a descriptive way and compared., Conclusions: The efficacy of the PBM protocol on the postoperative period of bichectomy surgeries was evidenced by the decrease of edema and pain.

Cancer is characterized by the disordered growth of cells that have high capacity of invasion to the tissues and organs. One of the types of tumour that has national incidence and high mortality is breast cancer. Studies show that in addition to hereditary factors, lifestyle and environmental factors, there are factors related to emotional distress (mourning), which interfere with the development of breast cancer. Thus, it is necessary to investigate if the experience of mourning can trigger the appearance of the tumour. For this, an integrative review was performed to verify the existence of the relationship between mourning and development of breast cancer, which presented contradictory results. Methodological errors and lack of access to important information, such as alcohol and tobacco use, were pointed out as the main causes of the contradiction found. A possible mechanism involving cortisol release has been proposed, but more research is needed to make it clear whether the association between mourning and breast cancer really exists, and by what path.

Given the growing trend towards medical indications for continuous use of anticoagulants, the number of patients on these medications continues to rise. The management of patients on oral anticoagulants requiring oral surgical procedures has aroused much controversy. Changes in an anticoagulation regimen are associated with an increased risk of thromboembolism. However, it seems logical and advantageous for the patients' health if surgery could be performed without any change to the anticoagulation therapy. In dentistry, high-power lasers have been poorly explored in this field. The hemostatic properties of high-power lasers could be helpful during oral soft tissue surgeries in anticoagulated patients. The aim of this study was to compare bleeding time in anticoagulated rats after lingual frenectomy performed with a scalpel or diode laser with bleeding time in healthy animals. Twenty-four male Wistar rats were assigned to four groups (n = 6): (CS) Control-Scalpel Surgery; (AS) Anticoagulated-Scalpel Surgery; (CL) Control-Laser (diode laser 810 nm/1.5 W) Surgery; and (AL) Anticoagulated-Laser Surgery (diode laser 810 nm/1.5 W). Warfarin administration was used to induce anticoagulation. Blood was blotted every 30 seconds with filter paper until bleeding stopped to verify bleeding time. Two blinded researchers performed the surgeries and collected the bleeding time data. Diode laser surgery led to complete hemostasis in rats during and after lingual frenectomy. Zero bleeding was assessed during surgeries and after diode laser surgeries in anticoagulated rats. Laser-induced hemostasis offered an alternative solution to the controversial issue of intraoperative and postoperative bleeding control in patients on anticoagulation therapy.

The present study aims to evaluate the current scientific data regarding the effectiveness of photobiomodulation (PBM) in the treatment of dentin hypersensitivity (DH) as an alternative method for pain control. A systematic review was conducted to assess the effectiveness of PBM as treatment for DH. A complete literature search was performed up to October 2016. Searches were conducted using Boolean operators and MeSH terms. References of all selected full-text articles and related reviews were scanned. A total of 280 articles were identified (241 articles were excluded by the title and abstract). Of the 39 articles selected for analysis, 36 were excluded because they presented one or more exclusion criteria. Therefore, three articles were qualified for inclusion in this systematic review. PBM may not lead to adverse effects provided that adequately controlled parameters are followed when treating DH. More consistent studies should be conducted in order to adequately observe the advantageous therapeutic effect of PBM.

Despite nearly a century of research, the treatment of cervical dentinal hypersensitivity (DH) remains challenging. This case report discusses the indications for different approaches to the treatment of DH in a single patient; the chosen alternatives took into account the different degrees of tooth wear and levels of pain at different sites. A 31-year-old woman reported DH in the maxillary right canine and first premolar and the maxillary left lateral incisor and canine in response to thermal, tactile, and osmotic stimuli. Clinical examination revealed that the teeth on the right side presented noncarious cervical lesions deeper than 1 mm, while the teeth on the left side presented only minimal wear. Therefore, the right canine and premolar were restored with composite resin to create a mechanical barrier against stimuli and reestablish form, function, and esthetics. Prior to restoration, the teeth on the right side were irradiated with a low-power laser (808 nm, 100 mW, 1.1 J/point, 10 seconds), which was applied in a single session at 2 locations on each tooth. In contrast, the left lateral incisor and canine were irradiated in 3 sessions with the low-power laser, which reduces pain levels and depolarizes nerve fibers by means of cell biomodulation, and received no restorations. A visual analog scale (0.0-10.0) was used to record the patient's pain, and it was found that pain levels for the restored teeth decreased from 9.4 initially to 0.0 immediately after restoration, and pain levels for the irradiated teeth decreased from 5.4 initially to 2.0 after 3 sessions. After 6 months of clinical evaluation, both sets of teeth showed scores of 0.0 (no pain). Purpose: To assess the effectiveness of four in-office therapies used for the treatment of dentin hypersensitiviy (DH) after one single application., Materials and Methods: A randomised, controlled, split-mouth clinical trial was designed to evaluate the following treatments: 5% sodium fluoride varnish (positive control); 3% potassium oxalate; two-step self-etching adhesive; high power diode laser. Nineteen patients were selected and one tooth per quadrant was included in the study. After evaporative stimulation, pain was quantified by the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) at baseline, immediately after treatment, and after 15, 30 and 60 days., Results: Compared to the baseline values, fluoride varnish (p = 0.00) and potassium oxalate (p = 0.00) presented an immediate desensitising effect that remained constant at 15, 30 and 60 days. The high-power diode laser presented significant reduction in VAS scores after 15 days (p = 0.00), while in the self-etching adhesive group, a significant reduction in VAS scores was observed only after 60 days (p = 0.03). The change in VAS ([VAS x days] - VAS baseline) differed among the groups immediately after treatment, being higher in the fluoride varnish and lower in the adhesive groups, but no statistically significant difference was found at time intervals of 15, 30 and 60 days., Conclusion: When an immediate desensitising effect is desired after one single application, fluoride varnish and potassium oxalate should be used. High-power diode laser and self-etching adhesive may not be clinically considered an appropriate desensitising therapy after one single application.

In Endodontics, photosensitizers' such as methylene blue and toluidine blue have been used in Photodynamic Therapy due to their positive results. However, they can stain the dentin from the root canal after Photodynamic Therapy (PDT). The present in vitro study aimed to evaluate different stain removal protocols from root canal after PDT using methylene blue (MB) dye. After mechanical preparation of the root canal of 40 uni-radicular human teeth, PDT was performed using 0,01% MB with parameters of 3min of pre-irradiation and a diode laser irradiation emitting at 660nm, 40mW, 4min, 9.6J. After PDT, different protocols of MB removal were performed: Group 1 - control (0.9% saline solution); Group 2 - sodium hypochlorite (2.5% NaOCl); Group 3-17% ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA); Group 4 - passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI); The color of the dentin of the root canal was measured, before, immediately after the PDT and immediately after the cleaning using a spectrophotometer. The ΔE values found were statistically compared using the ANOVA and Tukey's tests (α=0.05). All the treatments lead to some cleaning of root canal after PDT, however, none of the treatments tested completely removed all staining caused by MB photosensitizer of the root canal. Among the treatments tested, PUI and Hypochlorite 2.5% promoted greater cleaning, with no statistically significant difference between them. Objective: Analyze the effect of photobiomodulation in the prevention of tooth sensitivity after in-office dental bleaching., Background Data: Tooth sensitivity is a common clinical consequence of dental bleaching. Therapies for prevention of sensitivity have been investigated in literature., Materials and Methods: This study was developed as a randomized, placebo blind clinical trial. Fifty patients were selected (n = 10) and randomly divided into five groups: (1) control, (2) placebo, (3) laser before bleaching, (4) laser after bleaching, and (5) laser before and after bleaching. Irradiation was performed perpendicularly, in contact, on each tooth during 10 sec per point in two points. The first point was positioned in the middle of the tooth crown and the second in the periapical region. Photobiomodulation was applied using the following parameters: 780 nm, 40 mW, 10 J/cm 2 , 0.4 J per point. Pain was analyzed before, immediately after, and seven subsequent days after bleaching. Patients were instructed to report pain using the scale: 0 = no tooth sensitivity, 1 = gentle sensitivity, 2 = moderate sensitivity, 3 = severe sensitivity., Results: There were no statistical differences between groups at any time (p > 0.05). More studies, with others parameters and different methods of tooth sensitivity analysis, should be performed to complement the results found., Conclusions: Within the limitation of the present study, the laser parameters of photobiomodulation tested in the present study were not efficient in preventing tooth sensitivity after in-office bleaching.

This randomized and longitudinal in vivo study aimed to assess different protocols for the treatment of dentin hypersensitivity with low-power laser (with different doses), high-power laser, and a desensitizing agent, for a period of 12 and 18 months. The lesions from 32 patients (117 lesions), who were submitted to the inclusion and exclusion criteria, were divided into nine groups (n = 13): G1: Gluma Desensitizer (Heraeus Kulzer), G2: low-power laser with low dose (three points of irradiation in vestibular portion and an apical point 30 mW, 10 J/cm 2 , 9 s per point with the wavelength of 810 nm, with three sessions with an interval of 72 h), G3: low-power laser with high dose (one point in the cervical area, and one apical point 100 mW, 40 J/cm 2 , 11 s per point with the wavelength of 810 nm in three sessions with an interval of 72 h), G4: low-power laser with low dose + Gluma Desensitizer, G5: low-power laser with high dose + Gluma Desensitizer, G6: Nd:YAG laser (Power Laser™ ST6, Research® in contact 1.0 W, 10 Hz and 100 mJ, ≈85 J/cm 2 , with the wavelength of 1064 nm), G7: Nd:YAG laser + Gluma Desensitizer, G8: low-power laser with low dose + Nd:YAG laser, and G9: low-power laser with high dose + Nd:YAG laser. The level of sensitivity of each volunteer was assessed by visual analog scale of pain (VAS) with the aid of air from the triple syringe and exploration probe, 12 and 18 months after treatment. All analyses were performed separately for air and probe stimulus. The level of significance was considered for values of p < 0.05. After statistical analysis, all treatments were shown to be effective in reducing dentinal hypersensitivity, and the results were considered not statistically different from those at 12 months. Therefore, until the 18-month evaluation, it could be said that no statistical differences were observed in the sensitivity levels for all treatments.

Postoperative sensitivity is one of the most common side effects of in-office bleaching with hydrogen peroxide. Laser phototherapy (LPT) has been suggested as an adjunctive treatment to prevent or minimize tooth sensitivity. This case report aimed to verify the efficacy of LPT in the reduction of sensitivity after in-office bleaching. Tooth bleaching was performed with 35% hydrogen peroxide activated with a hybrid LED-laser device. Immediately after the bleaching treatment, the patient reported dental sensitivity, as measured with a visual analog scale (VAS). To reduce sensitivity, LPT was applied with a 780-nm laser using the following parameters: 70 mW, exposure time of 10 seconds per point of irradiation (middle region of the buccal surfaces of each compromised tooth) in contact mode, energy of 1 J per point. Immediately after LPT, the patient reported a substantially lower level of pain on the VAS. Twenty-four hours after bleaching, the score on the VAS indicated that sensitivity levels had rebounded, and the patient received additional LPT. After 48 hours, the patient reported no dental sensitivity. The results in this patient indicated that irradiation with an infrared low-power laser substantially reduced dental pain generated by bleaching, suggesting that LPT should be considered as an auxiliary method to reduce postbleaching tooth sensitivity., Competing Interests: Disclaimer: The authors have no financial, economic, commercial, or professional interests related to topics presented in this manuscript.

Abandoned tailing dumps (ATDs) offer an opportunity to identify the main physicochemical filters that determine colonization of vegetation in solid mine wastes. The current study determined the soil physicochemical factors that explain the compositional variation of pioneer vegetal species on ATDs from surrounding areas in semiarid Mediterranean-climate type ecosystems of north-central Chile (Coquimbo Region). Geobotanical surveys-including physicochemical parameters of substrates (0-20 cm depth), plant richness, and coverage of plant species-were performed on 73 ATDs and surrounding areas. A total of 112 plant species were identified from which endemic/native species (67%) were more abundant than exotic species (33%) on ATDs. The distribution of sampling sites and plant species in canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) ordination diagrams indicated a gradual and progressive variation in species composition and abundance from surrounding areas to ATDs because of variations in total Cu concentration (1.3%) and the percentage of soil particles <2 μm (1.8%). According to the CCA, there were 10 plant species with greater abundance on sites with high total Cu concentrations and fine-textured substrates, which could be useful for developing plant-based stabilization programs of ATDs in semiarid Mediterranean-climate type ecosystems of north-central Chile.

This randomized placebo-blind study aimed to evaluate the effect of laser phototherapy (LPT) on pain caused by symptomatic irreversible pulpitis (SIP). Sixty patients diagnosed with SIP were randomly assigned to treatment groups (n = 15): G1 (control), G2 (laser placebo-sham irradiation), G3 (laser irradiation at 780 nm, 40 mW, 4 J/cm 2 ), and G4 (laser irradiation at 780 nm, 40 mW, 40 J/cm 2 ). Spontaneous pain was recorded using a VAS score before (T0), immediately after (T1), and 15 min after treatment (T2). Local anesthetics failure during emergency endodontic treatment was also assessed. There was no pain difference in T1 and T2 between the experimental laser groups (G3 and G4) and the placebo group (G2). The 4-J/cm 2 (G3) irradiation resulted in significant increase in the local anesthetics failure in lower jar teeth. This effect could be suggested as consequence of the LPT improvement in local circulation and vasodilatation that would result in the increase of local anesthetic agent absorption. The application of 780-nm diode laser irradiation, at 4 and 40 J/cm 2 , showed no effect in reducing the pain in SIP in comparison to the placebo group. The fluence of 4 J/cm 2 showed a negative effect in local anesthetics, resulting in significant increase of complimentary local anesthesia during emergency endodontic treatment. This work provides evidence of the consequence of LPT application on teeth with symptomatic irreversible pulpitis. LPT should be avoided in teeth with pain due to irreversible pulpitis.

Pseudorabies virus (PrV) causes Aujeszky's disease (AD), which affects mainly swine, but also cattle, sheep, and wild animals, resulting in substantial economic losses due to animal mortality and lost productivity worldwide. To combat PrV, eradication programs using PrV strains lacking the gene encoding glycoprotein E (gE) are ongoing in several countries. These eradication programs have generated a currently unmet demand for affordable, easy-to-use, and sensitive tests that can detect PrV infection in pigs infected with either wild-type virus or vaccine strain (gE-deleted) virus. To meet this demand, we used the baculovirus-insect cell system to produce recombinant glycoprotein B (gB) as antigen for an immune assay. The high GC-content (70% average) of the gB gene from the Argentinian PrV CL15 strain necessitated the use of betaine as a PCR enhancer to amplify the extracellular domain. Recombinant gB was expressed at high levels and reacted strongly with sera from PrV infected pigs. We used the recombinant gB to develop an agar gel immunodiffusion (AGID) test for detection of PrV antibodies. Compared to the gold standard virus neutralization (VN) assay, the AGID sensitivity and specificity were 95% and 96.6% respectively. Thus, recombinant gB produced in the baculovirus-insect cell system is a viable source of antigen for the detection of PrV antibodies in AGID tests. Purpose: To evaluate the suitability of an ultra-short pulsed laser (USPL) to treat zirconia ceramic surfaces and increase their adhesion to dual-curing resin cement., Materials and Methods: Twenty 10 × 10 × 5 mm³ blocks were prepared from a zirconia ceramic (Y-TZP). The specimens were polished and randomly assigned to four groups (n = 5) which received the following surface treatments: sandblasting (SB) with Al₂O₃ particles and silica coating (SC) with SiO₂ particles as positive controls; two groups received USPL irradiation, one with 10 scan repetitions (L10) and the other with 20 (L20). Laser irradiation was performed at 1030 nm, 2.3 J/cm², 6 ps pulse duration. The ceramic blocks were duplicated in composite resin and cemented with a dual-curing resin cement. Half of the blocks were then stored in water (37°C) for 24 h and the other half for 1 month. At each time, 40 to 60 sticks per group were subjected to microtensile bond strength testing. Data were analyzed statistically using the Kruskal-Wallis test (α = 0.05)., Results: Laser-treated zirconia presented statistically significantly higher roughness than did SB and SC. After 24 h, the highest bond strength means (MPa) were achieved by L10 (42.3 ± 10.8) and L20 (37.9 ± 14.4), and both of them were statistically significantly higher than SB (22.0 ± 5.3) and SC (20.8 ± 7.1) (p < 0.05). After 1 month of storage, L10- and L20-treated zirconia still showed significantly higher bond strengths than did SB- and SC-treated zirconia (p < 0.05)., Conclusion: USPL irradiation significantly increases bond strength of zirconia ceramic to dual-curing resin cement and might be an alternative for improving adhesion to this material.

The aim of this randomized in vivo study was to compare antimicrobial chemotherapies in primary carious dentin. Thirty-two participants ages 5 to 7 years underwent partial caries removal from deep carious dentin lesions in primary molars and were subsequently divided into three groups: control [chlorhexidine and resin-modified glass ionomer cement (RMGIC)], LEDTB [photodynamic antimicrobial chemotherapy (PACT) with light-emitting diode associated with toluidine blue solution and RMGIC], and LMB [PACT with laser associated with methylene blue solution and RMGIC]. The participants were submitted to initial clinical and radiographic examinations. Demographic features and biofilm, gingival, and DMFT/DMFS indexes were evaluated, in addition to clinical and radiographic followups at 6 and 12 months after treatments. Carious dentin was collected before and after each treatment, and the number of Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus sobrinus, Lactobacillus casei, Fusobacterium nucleatum, Atopobium rimae, and total bacteria was established by quantitative polymerase chain reaction. No signs of pain or restoration failure were observed. All therapies were effective in reducing the number of microorganisms, except for S. sobrinus. No statistical differences were observed among the protocols used. All therapies may be considered as effective modern approaches to minimal intervention for the management of deep primary caries treatment.

Objective: The aim of the present study was to conduct a review of the literature about adhesion on erbium laser prepared cavities, related to the specific conditions of the irradiated dentin substrate and the effects on bond strength values., Background Data: Advances in adhesive restorative techniques significantly influenced modern restorative dentistry. The concept of "minimally invasive dentistry" aims to perform more conservative treatment of cavities in which the removal of sound dentin is no longer necessary. This approach, which relies on the concept of adhesion of restorative materials to the mineralized dental tissues, is considered to be a contemporary outcome in dentistry. Similarly, laser technology in restorative dentistry opened new possibilities and strategies as alternatives to conventional treatment. Considering the clinical aspects of the use of erbium lasers for caries removal, cavity preparations, and substrate conditioning, treatment with lasers can be considered to be an efficient technique with wide acceptance by patients., Methods: Computerized and manual searches were conducted for studies through 2015 that addressed the topic., Results: According to the literature, there is no defined standard protocol concerning the information that articles must provide, making a definitive protocol very difficult to establish. Data varied from the type of adhesive and resin composite used, substrate, and parameters (power, energy density, pulse duration, irradiation time, distance, cooling system) to the bond strength test methodology used., Conclusions: Further studies are necessary in order to define a standard protocol with positive results and higher bond strength values when using erbium lasers. Detailed information concerning laser parameters should be implemented. Also, longitudinal clinical studies should be developed in the search for new parameters that behave favorably in the irradiated substrate.

Objective: The aim of this article is to review the current literature concerning Erbium lasers: Er:YAG (λ=2.94μm), Er:YSGG (λ=2.79μm), and Er,Cr:YSGG (λ=2.78μm) for the prevention of enamel and dentin demineralization., Methods: Features such as laser parameters, reported outcome, inhibition of demineralization, and mechanisms of laser action were analyzed. A total of 55 publications were found in four electronic databases and were complemented by hand searching., Results: Evidence regarding the potential of laser-induced prevention of demineralization (LIPD) was demonstrated in the literature, especially when subablative parameters were applied. Although ablation parameters have shown partial positive results in LIPD, some studies have shown severe morphological alterations in enamel and dentin. Until now, there are still no reports on the long-term effects of laser treatment. Additionally, it is unclear if there is a best combination of mechanisms that leads to the optimal LIPD. Other variables that are poorly investigated in the literature and have an important role in LIPD include pulse width, water irrigation, and air flow., Conclusions: This review demonstrates the current knowledge concerning the use of erbium lasers in LIPD, and brings forth essential questions that should be further addressed.

Post-traumatic nerve repair represents a major challenge to health sciences. Although there have been great advances in the last few years, it is still necessary to find methods that can effectively enhance nerve regeneration. Laser therapy has been widely investigated as a potential method for nerve repair. Therefore, in this article, a review of the existing literature was undertaken with regard to the effects of low-power laser irradiation on the regeneration of traumatically/surgically injured nerves. The articles were selected using either electronic search engines or manual tracing of the references cited in key papers. In electronic searches, we used the key words as "paresthesia", "laser therapy", "low-power laser and nerve repair", and "laser therapy and nerve repair", considering case reports and clinical studies. According to the findings of the literature, laser therapy accelerates and improves the regeneration of the affected nerve tissues, but there are many conflicting results about laser therapy. This can be attributed to several variables such as wavelength, radiation dose, and type of radiation. All the early in vivo studies assessed in this research were effective in restoring sensitivity. Although these results indicate a potential benefit of the use of lasers on nerve repair, further double-blind controlled clinical trials should be conducted in order to standardize protocols for clinical application.

The aim of this randomized, longitudinal clinical study was to evaluate different protocols for dentin hypersensitivity treatment with low-power laser at different dosages, desensitizing agent, and associations, for a period of 6 months. After analysis of the inclusion and exclusion criteria of volunteer participants, those who present pain resulting from non-carious cervical lesions were selected. Twenty-seven patients participated in the study, and 55 lesions were recorded. The lesions were divided into five groups (n = 11), treated, and evaluated: G1: Gluma Desensitizer (Heraeus); G2: low-power laser (Photon Lase, DMC) at low dose (three vestibular points and one apical point of irradiation: 30 mW, 10 J/cm(2), 9 s per point with wavelength of 810 nm), three sessions were performed with an interval of 72 h between them; G3: low-power laser at high dose (application at one cervical and one apical point: 100 mW, 90 J/cm(2), 11 s per point with wavelength of 810 nm), three sessions were performed with an interval of 72 h between irradiations; G4: low-power laser at low dose + Gluma Desensitizer; and G5: low-power laser at high dose + Gluma Desensitizer, the level of sensitivity of each volunteer was evaluated with a visual analog scale of pain (VAS) with the use of air from a triple syringe and exploration with a probe after time intervals of 5 min, 1 week, and 1, 3, and 6 months after treatment. Data were collected and subjected to statistical analysis. Kolmogorov-Smirnov test was used to verify the distribution of the data, and nonparametric Kruskal-Wallis and Friedman tests were performed for comparison among the experimental groups and time intervals studied, respectively. Statistically significant differences between the studied time intervals (p < 0.05) were detected. From the difference in pain, it was observed that for both stimuli, the protocol with the Gluma desensitizing agent presented immediate effects of pain reduction. For low-level lasers, it was observed that there were distinct effects for the different doses; however, both were efficient in reducing pain up to the 6 months of clinical follow-up. Therefore, it could be concluded that all the desensitizing protocols were effective in reducing dentin hypersensitivity, but with different effects. The combination of protocols is an interesting alternative in the treatment of cervical dentin hypersensitivity.

Limited information is available regarding the adhesion to eroded dentin. This study aims to evaluate the effect of different surface treatments on eroded dentin morphology and on microtensile bond strength (μTBS) of adhesive systems to this substrate. Ninety-six extracted third molars were randomly divided into eight groups (n = 12) according to the type of surface treatment and the adhesive system: G1 = Control + Clearfil SE Bond [SE], G2 = Diamond bur [DB] + SE, G3 = Er:YAG laser (60 mJ, 2 Hz, 0.12 W, 19.3 J/ cm(2)) + SE, G4 = Er,Cr:YSGG laser (50 mJ, 30 Hz, 1.5 W, 4.5 J/ cm(2)) + SE, G5 = Control + Single Bond [SB], G6 = DB + SB, G7 = Er:YAG + SB, G8 = Er,Cr:YSGG + SB. The erosive cycling was performed by immersion in 0.05 M citric acid (pH 2.3, 10 min, 6x/day) and in supersaturated solution (pH 7.0, 1 h, between acid attacks), during 5 days. Blocks of composite were bonded to the samples according to the manufacturers' instructions. After 24 h-storage in distilled/deionized water (37 °C), stick-shaped samples were obtained and submitted to μTBS test. Each surface treatment was analyzed under scanning electron microscopy (n = 4) and the bond strength values (megapascal) were analyzed by two-way ANOVA and Tukey tests (α = 0.05). All surface treatments lead to changes on eroded dentin. G4 showed the highest bond strength mean (28.3 ± 9.2 MPa), which was statistically significant higher than all the other groups (p < 0.05). The surface treatment with Er,Cr:YSGG laser irradiation (4.5 J/cm(2)/50 mJ/30 Hz/140 μs) prior to bonding with a self-etching adhesive system significantly increases adhesion to eroded dentin, as compared to conventional treatment.

The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of combined CO2 laser and tin-containing fluoride treatment on the formation and progression of enamel erosive lesions. Ninety-six human enamel samples were obtained, stored in thymol solution and, after surface polishing, randomly divided into 6 different surface treatment groups (n = 16 in each group) as follows: no treatment, control (C); one CO2 laser irradiation (L1); two CO2 laser irradiations (L2); daily application of fluoride solution (F); combined daily fluoride solution + one CO2 laser irradiation (L1F), and combined daily fluoride solution + two CO2 laser irradiations (L2F). Laser irradiation was performed at 0.3 J/cm2 (5 µs/226 Hz/10.6 µm) on day 1 (L1) and day 6 (L2). The fluoride solution contained AmF/NaF (500 ppm F), and SnCl2 (800 ppm Sn) at pH 4.5. After surface treatment the samples were submitted to an erosive cycling over 10 days, including immersion in citric acid (2 min/0.05 M/pH = 2.3) 6 times daily and storage in remineralization solution (≥1 h) between erosive attacks. At the end of each cycling day, the enamel surface loss (micrometers) was measured using a 3D laser profilometer. Data were statistically analyzed by means of a 2-level mixed effects model and linear contrasts (α = 0.05). Group F (-3.3 ± 2.0 µm) showed significantly lower enamel surface loss than groups C (-27.22 ± 4.1 µm), L1 (-18.3 ± 4.4 µm) and L2 (-16.3 ± 5.3 µm) but higher than L1F (-1.0 ± 4.4 µm) and L2F (1.4 ± 3.2 µm, p < 0.05). Under the conditions of this in vitro study, the tin-containing fluoride solution caused 88% reduction of enamel surface loss, while its combination with CO2 laser irradiation at 0.3 J/cm2 hampered erosive loss almost completely., (© 2015 S. Among the new technologies developed, low power lasers have enabled new approaches to provide conservative treatment. Low power lasers act at cellular level, resulting in reduced pain, modulating inflammation, and improved tissue healing. Clinical application of the low power laser requires specific knowledge concerning laser interaction with biological tissue so that the correct irradiation protocol can be established. The present case report describes the clinical steps involved in an indirect composite resin restoration performed in a 31-year-old patient, in whom low power laser was used for soft tissue biomodulation. Laser therapy was applied with a semiconductor laser 660 nm, spot size of 0.028 cm(2), energy density of 35.7 J/cm(2), mean power of 100 mW, and energy per point as 1 J, in contact mode, on a total of 2 points (mesial and distal), totaling 2 J of energy. The therapy with low power laser can contribute positively to the success of an indirect restorative treatment.

Recurrent herpes labialis is a worldwide life-long oral health problem that remains unsolved. It affects approximately one third of the world population and causes frequent pain and discomfort episodes, as well as social restriction due to its compromise of esthetic features. In addition, the available antiviral drugs have not been successful in completely eliminating the virus and its recurrence. Currently, different kinds of laser treatment and different protocols have been proposed for the management of recurrent herpes labialis. Therefore, the aim of the present article was to review the literature regarding the effects of laser irradiation on recurrent herpes labialis and to identify the indications and most successful clinical protocols. The literature was searched with the aim of identifying the effects on healing time, pain relief, duration of viral shedding, viral inactivation, and interval of recurrence. According to the literature, none of the laser treatment modalities is able to completely eliminate the virus and its recurrence. However, laser phototherapy appears to strongly decrease pain and the interval of recurrences without causing any side effects. Photodynamic therapy can be helpful in reducing viral titer in the vesicle phase, and high-power lasers may be useful to drain vesicles. The main advantages of the laser treatment appear to be the absence of side effects and drug interactions, which are especially helpful for older and immunocompromised patients. Although these results indicate a potential beneficial use for lasers in the management of recurrent herpes labialis, they are based on limited published clinical trials and case reports. The literature still lacks double-blind controlled clinical trials verifying these effects and such trials should be the focus of future research.

Purpose: To evaluate the shear bond strength (SBS) to zirconia ceramics using different associations of primers and resin cements., Materials and Methods: Two blocks of LAVA zirconia (3Y-TZP) were randomly submitted to an application of three different commercially available primers: Alloy Primer (AP), Z-Prime Plus (ZP), and Signum Zirconia Bond (SZB). Nonprimed specimens were considered controls. After treatment, the 80 specimens (5 mm × 5 mm × 2 mm) were randomly cemented with one of the resin cements: Panavia F, Multilink, seT, and NX3. For cementation, cylinders of resin cement were built on the ceramic surfaces using the SDI SBS apparatus. The specimens were submitted to the SBS test. Fractured surfaces were observed under stereomicroscopy to determine the failure mode, and mean bond strength values were analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests (α = 0.05)., Results: Signum Zirconia Bond had the highest SBS compared to all other primers and the control group, regardless of the resin cement used. The highest values were obtained when associating Panavia F with Signum Zirconia Bond. Alloy Primer increased bonding values when associated with seT cement only. When no primer was used, no statistical difference was observed among resin cements. All specimens fractured due to adhesive failure., Conclusion: Signum Zirconia Bond is capable of increasing bonding values of resin cements to zirconia ceramics. Its association with Panavia F shows enhanced results when considering short-term adhesion to zirconia.

Composite blocks were bonded to the samples, and after 24-h storage in distilled/deionized water (37 °C), stick-shaped samples were obtained and submitted to μTBS test. Bond strength values (in megapascal) were analyzed by two-way ANOVA and Tukey tests (α = 0.05). G1 (54.69 ± 7.8 MPa) showed the highest mean, which was statistically significantly higher than all the other groups (p < 0.05). For all treatments, SE showed higher bond strength than SB, except only for Er,Cr:YSGG treatment, in which the systems did not differ statistically from each other. Based on the irradiation parameters considered in this study, it can be concluded that Er:YAG and Er,Cr:YSGG irradiation presented lower values than the control group; however, their association with self-etching adhesive does not have a significantly negative effect on sound dentin (μTBS values of >20 MPa).

Oral mucositis (OM) is one of the side effects of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), resulting in major morbidity. The aim of this study was to determine the cost-effectiveness of the introduction of a specialized oral care program including laser therapy in the care of patients receiving HSCT with regard to morbidity associated with OM. Clinical information was gathered on 167 patients undergoing HSCT and divided according to the presence (n = 91) or absence (n = 76) of laser therapy and oral care. Cost analysis included daily hospital fees, parenteral nutrition (PN) and prescription of opioids. It was observed that the group without laser therapy (group II) showed a higher frequency of severe degrees of OM (relative risk = 16.8, 95% confidence interval -5.8 to 48.9, p < 0.001), with a significant association between this severity and the use of PN (p = 0.001), prescription of opioids (p < 0.001), pain in the oral cavity (p = 0.003) and fever > 37.8°C (p = 0.005). Hospitalization costs in this group were up to 30% higher. The introduction of oral care by a multidisciplinary staff including laser therapy helps reduce morbidity resulting from OM and, consequently, helps minimize hospitalization costs associated with HSCT, even considering therapy costs., (Copyright © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.)

Background and Objective: Over the last few decades, many studies have focused on the effect of lasers on the management of oral mucositis in oncologic patients treated with chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy. However, the effect of light-emitting diode (LED) has been poorly studied, and was not compared with that of laser phototherapy (LPT). For this reason, the aim of the present study was to clinically compare the effect of these two therapies on chemotherapy-induced oral mucositis (CIOM) and pain., Methods: Forty patients with CIOM were divided into two groups: G1, patients treated with LPT; G2, patients treated with LED. The treatment was administered during 10 consecutive days, with exception of weekends. LPT was applied using an InGaAlP laser (660 nm/40 mW/6.6 J cm-(2)/0.24 J per point/0.036 cm(2) of spot size). LED phototherapy was applied using 0.24 J per point/80 mW/630 nm/1 cm(2) of spot size. CIOM was assessed during each session in accordance to the World Health Organization (WHO) score. The patient self-assessed pain was scored on a visual analog scale (VAS)., Results: The mean VAS and WHO scores were significantly smaller in the LED group (p<0.05). However, both groups required the same number of days to reach score zero for mucositis and pain (p>0.05). Moreover, in the group with severe mucositis (score III), there was a lower frequency of patients with complete healing and pain relief, with the exception of analgesia in G2, in which almost all patients were completely relieved from pain., Conclusions: These findings suggest that LED therapy is more effective than LPT in the treatment of COIM, with the parameters used in the present study.

The increasing concern and the search for conservative dental treatments have resulted in the development of several new technologies. Low and high power lasers can be cited as one of these new technologies. Low power lasers act at cellular level leading to pain reduction, modulation of inflammation, and improvement of tissue healing. High power lasers act by increasing temperature and have the potential to promote microbial reduction and ablation of hard and soft tissues. The clinical application of both low and high power lasers requires specific knowledge concerning laser interaction with biological tissues, so that the correct irradiation protocol can be established. The present case report describes the clinical steps of two metal-ceramic crowns development in a 60-year-old patient. Three different laser wavelengths were applied throughout the treatment with different purposes: Nd:YAG laser (1,064 nm) for dentin decontamination, diode (660 nm) for soft tissue biomodulation, and Er:YAG laser (2,940 nm) for inner ceramic surface conditioning. Lasers were successfully applied in the present case report as coadjutant in the treatment. This coadjutant technology can be a potential tool to assist treatment to reach the final success.

This in vitro study aimed to investigate the potential of CO2 lasers associated with different fluoride agents in inhibiting enamel erosion. Human enamel samples were randomly divided into 9 groups (n = 12): G1-eroded enamel; G2-APF gel; G3-AmF/NaF gel; G4-AmF/SnF2 solution; G5-CO2 laser (λ = 10.6 µm)+APF gel; G6-CO2 laser+AmF/NaF gel; G7-CO2laser+AmF/SnF2solution; G8-CO2 laser; and G9-sound enamel. The CO2 laser parameters were: 0.45 J/cm2; 6 μs; and 128 Hz. After surface treatment, the samples (except from G9) were immersed in 1% citric acid (pH 4.0, 3 min). Surface microhardness was measured at baseline and after surface softening. The data were statistically analyzed by one-way ANOVA and Tukey's tests (p < 0.05). G2 (407.6 ± 37.3) presented the highest mean SMH after softening, followed by G3 (407.5 ± 29.8) and G5 (399.7 ± 32.9). Within the fluoride-treated groups, G4 (309.0 ± 24.4) had a significantly lower mean SMH than G3 and G2, which were statistically similar to each other. AmF/NaF and APF application showed potential to protect and control erosion progression in dental enamel, and CO2 laser irradiation at 0.45J/cm2 did not influence its efficacy. CO2 laser irradiation alone under the same conditions could also significantly decrease enamel erosive mineral loss, although at lower levels.

Objective: The aim of this study is to report patient and physician profiles of those who used the teleconsultation system in the primary care health units of a health district in the city of Belo Horizonte, MG, Brazil., Materials and Methods: Data were collected from the telehealth attendance records of nine Primary Health Units (Unidade Básica de Saúde [UBS] in Portuguese) and from interviews carried out with the referring physicians. The criteria for inclusion required that data come from users seen by means of telehealth in the period between December 2004 and August 2010 and from the practitioners who saw them. The following were excluded: physicians who were not working in the UBS when the data were collected and a physician who did not agree to take part in the study., Results: Two hundred sixty-three teleconsultations were analyzed, and 20 referring physicians were interviewed. The offline method was the most common. The physicians were predominantly female and had graduated over 11 years ago. The patients were predominantly adult women. After teleconsultation, a prescription was not necessary for 9.8% of patients. When required, 83.2% of the medication was available in the UBS. In 68.3% of cases, additional tests were required. The incorporation of these technologies prevented the physical referral of patients in 64.2% of cases., Conclusions: Telehealth resources can help to improve the provision of primary healthcare, reducing the number of physically referred patients. The number of teleconsultations is still small, and there is a need to encourage physicians to use the system.

Unlabelled: This study evaluated the effects of different parameters of dentin irradiation with erbium -doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Er:YAG) laser on bond strength to dentin and analyzed the ultramorphological characteristics of resin-laser-irradiated dentin interfaces using a transmission electron microscope (TEM). Dentin surfaces were abraded with SiC paper (600 grit) or Er:YAG laser-irradiated (120/4, 140/6, 180/4, or 200/6 mJ/Hz). Three adhesive systems were tested: Single Bond Plus (3M ESPE), Clearfil Protect Bond (Kuraray Med.), and Clearfil Tri-S Bond (Kuraray Med.). Treatments were performed over flat dentin surfaces of human third molars. Specimens were stored in distilled water for 1 week or 6 months and prepared for a microtensile bond strength test and interfacial ultrastructure for analysis. Microtensile bond strength data (n = 5) were analyzed with three-way analysis of variance. Irradiation with Er:YAG laser did not reduce the bond strength values for self-etching adhesives even after 6 months of water storage. The hybrid layer formation was observed only when the adhesives were applied to non-irradiated dentin (control group). Nanoleakage occurred in all resin-dentin interfaces using Single Bond Plus for both periods. Nanoleakage pattern and bond strength of self-etching adhesives to dentin were less affected by Er:YAG laser irradiation and by the 6-month storage in water than was those of the etch-and-rinse adhesive. TEM analysis revealed no hybridization when dentin was laser-irradiated., Clinical Significance: Minimally invasive caries removal has been proposed. Nevertheless, bonding mechanisms to lased dentin are not entirely described. Knowing the interaction between the treated dentin and bonding agents and its behavior over time is of utmost importance for new technologies. Regarding that, two-bottle self-etching adhesive system provided a more consistent evidence of its better behavior when bonding to lased substrate.

Suid Herpesvirus 1 (SHV-1) is the etiological agent of Aujeszky's disease (AD), which affects swine herds worldwide and causes substantial economic losses due to animal mortality and lost productivity. In order to eradicate SHV-1, vaccination programs using viruses lacking the gene encoding glycoprotein E (gE) are ongoing in several countries. These eradication programs have generated a currently unmet demand for affordable and sensitive tests that can detect SHV-1 infection, yet distinguish between infected and vaccinated pigs. To meet this demand, we used the baculovirus-insect cell system to produce immunologically authentic full-length recombinant gE protein for use in a serum ELISA assay. As previous efforts to clone the gE gene had failed due to its extremely high GC-content (75% average), we used betaine as a PCR enhancer to facilitate amplification of the entire gE gene from the Argentinian CL15 strain of SHV-1. The cloned gE gene was expressed at high levels in recombinant baculovirus-infected insect cells and reacted strongly with sera from SHV-1 infected pigs. We used the recombinant gE protein to develop a local indirect ELISA test with sensitivity and specificity comparable to currently available commercial tests. Thus, recombinant gE produced in baculovirus-infected insect cells is a viable source of antigen for the detection of SHV-1 in ELISA tests.
