This study investigated critical metal (CM) geochemistry including rare earth elements (REEs), Co, Ni, and Mn in groundwaters below and surrounding two dredged material placement facilities (DMPFs). Metal concentrations are elevated at both sites, spanning several orders of magnitude. The highest CM concentrations measured exceed many environments considered as aqueous resources (Co and Ni > 1 mg L -1 , REEs > 3 mg L -1 ). Correlations between sulfur and iron, major cations, and CMs indicate that oxidation of sulfides present in the DM releases metals both directly from sulfide minerals and indirectly through acid dissolution of and/or desorption from additional minerals. REE fractionation patterns indicate that their mobility in the groundwaters may be influenced by interactions with silicate, carbonate, and phosphate minerals. Significant positive Gd and Eu anomalies were observed, which may be attributed to increased mobility of Eu 2+ and anthropogenic Gd. Nanogeochemical analysis of filtered samples revealed several REE-bearing nanoparticulate (diameter < 100 nm) species, some of which co-occurred with aluminum, suggesting an (oxy)hydroxide or a clay mineral component. Further characterization of soluble and nano scale geochemical speciation is needed to fully assess the viability of CM recovery from DM-associated groundwater. The sustainable management of dredged sediment from contaminated sites needs to consider the end-use of the treated sediment. In this regard, modifying conventional sediment treatment techniques to generate a product that is suitable for a range of terrestrial uses is necessary. In the present study, we evaluated the product quality of treated sediment as a potential plant-growth medium following the thermal treatment of marine sediment contaminated by petroleum. The contaminated sediment was subject to thermal treatment at temperatures of 300, 400, or 500 °C, and no, low, or moderate oxygen availability, and the resulting treated sediment was analyzed in terms of its bulk properties, spectroscopic properties, organic contaminants, water-soluble salts and organic matter, and the leachability and extractability of heavy metals. All operational combinations for the treatment process reduced the total petroleum hydrocarbon content of the sediment from 4922 mg kg -1 to lower than 50 mg kg -1 . The thermal treatment process stabilized the heavy metals in the sediment, reducing the zinc and copper concentration by up to 58.9% and 89.6%, respectively, in the leachate from the toxicity characteristic leaching procedure. The hydrophilic organic and/or sulfate salt byproducts of the treatment were phytotoxic, but these can easily be removed by washing the sediment with water. By combining the sediment analysis results with experimental data from barley germination and early-growth tests, the end product was found to be of higher quality when higher temperatures and lower oxygen availability were employed in the treatment process. When terminating sediment bioaccumulation tests with the oligochaete Lumbriculus variegatus, varying amounts of detrital material are retained along with the recovered worms after sieving, necessitating time-consuming, labor-intensive manual separation of worms from detritus prior to tissue residue analysis. A method to facilitate the worms self-extracting out of the detrital material into a column of gravel was developed, resulting in approximately 90% recovery test organisms (on a mass basis) at test termination. Following exposure to contaminated sediment, polychlorinated biphenyl tissue residues and residual sediment in the gut of self-extracted animals were not significantly different compared to worms recovered by manual separation followed by purging of gut contents. Sediment dredging impacts coastal environments by promoting the resuspension of fine particles and remobilization of contaminants that may trigger toxic effects. In this study, we evaluated the sediment quality in harbor areas of Mucuripe bay, a semi-arid ecosystem located in Ceará state (Brazil), which is subject to dredging activities. A sampling survey was conducted right after dredging operations and data compared to another survey performed prior dredging. Sediments were analyzed for fine particles, organic carbon, nutrients, metals, hydrocarbons, and tributyltin (TBT). Toxicity of whole-sediment and liquid phase exposures were also determined. The concentrations of Cd, Cr, Cu, and Zn decreased after dredging, which was confirmed by the geoaccumulation index. Levels of TBT dropped while phosphorus, aliphatic and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons increased. Toxic effects persisted, indicating a post-dredging recontamination combined with other sources such as urban runoff, wastewater discharges, harbor activities, and antifouling particles. Data from Mucuripe and Pecém harbors were compiled and site-specific sediment quality values (SQVs) were developed by using multivariate methods. The threshold values proposed by our study were lower and more effective to predict toxicity compared to international guidelines, indicating levels of contamination for this tropical region in which toxic effects may occur. Humans rely fundamentally on the marine environment, which is at the same time subject to an increasingly broad range of anthropogenic pressures, leading to growing concerns and the need for effective management for marine protection. One activity is the dredging of ports and harbours which is necessary to maintain safe channels for commercial and recreational navigation. Regulatory authorities in developing countries have few resources to conduct full EIAs for determining dredged material disposal sites but are required to do so under international obligations. The Tool in this paper provides an effective, pragmatic, transparent, consistent, and robust approach to protect the environment whilst using limited technical and scientific resources through a risk based approach to defining need, characterising and designating disposal sites at sea for dredged material. Worldwide production of large volumes of dredged materials (DMs) has become a pressing environmental problem. In Turkey, the government has yet to develop management strategies that successfully prevent or minimize dumping into the Marmara Sea. One potential solution is the utilization of the DMs as a source of material for earthworks, particularly in sanitary landfills in Istanbul and Kocaeli. The most economically developed cities in Turkey, they were evaluated in terms of potential environmental impacts and regulatory compliance. Five ports/harbors representing specific portions of the study area and different industrial activities were selected as pilot regions. Physical, chemical, mineralogical, toxicological, and leaching potential measurements of DMs dredged from the seabed revealed they qualify as non-hazardous waste. Index and engineering tests performed on raw and processed DMs were assessed to determine the geotechnical requirements for soil-based materials (SBM) used in sanitary landfills. The results showed that non-hazardous DMs could be utilized as a cover, base/cap liner, and/or fill material at various sections within the landfills. The water balance and effectiveness of a landfill cover containing a liner from fine-grained dredged material ('METHA-material') and a drainage layer from sandy dredged material ('METHA-sand') from the Port of Hamburg (Northern Germany) was investigated for 20 years using two test fields (lysimeters), each 500 m 2 in size. The layering within the standard design test field (FS) is identical to the layering of the cover on the landfill, whereas the alternative design test field (FA) was designed to provoke desiccation of the liner. The setup abstained from continuous side walls cutting through the liners in order to allow for material properties representative for the landfill cover, at the cost of possible minor lateral inflows or outflows, which were, however, considered negligible. By example of the lysimeter FA the risk of desiccation-induced failure of a liner from METHA-material under the given climate could be shown. In contrast, the discharges and hydro-chemical parameters measured for the lysimeter FS indicate continuous high efficiency of the liner until today. The average discharge below the liner was 14.9 mm/yr. The entire cover contributes to the good liner performance. Reason are (1) the low hydraulic conductivity of the liner (5 × 10 -10 m/s) and its large thickness (1.5 m); (2) the increased stresses on the liner due to the 2.5 m thick overlaying cover; (3) the 1.0 m thick drainage layer from slowly-draining METHA-sand, allowing for a continuous nearly water-saturated fringe above the liner; and (4) the sufficient amount of plant available water in the recultivation layer., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Ltd. As known, marine dredged materials (DMs) are highly nuisance wastes if they are not correctly reused or removed. In this work, the usability of DMs to the technical terms as manufactured topsoil (MT) in the urban landscaping works is discussed. Firstly, the leaching potentials of DMs were determined according to the related legislations to identify their hazardousness features. Secondly, DMs were subject to some treatment stages such as sieving, desalination, organic amelioration via peat and sheep manure, and pH adjustment to turn into an alternative natural soil pursuant to the British Standard in the scope of soil quality improvement studies as there is not any national standard in Turkey for the production of topsoil from different materials. Then, MT mixtures were prepared with washed and unwashed DM, peat and sheep manure in different mixing ratios (v/v); 33%, 50% and 67% DM, respectively. Consequently, high quality grass seed mixtures used for the landscaping applications were monitored for six months. The results demonstrate the availability of DM as alternative MT in the urban landscaping areas. Thus, important data were obtained as to the use of DM at alternative areas such as green city, green roof, shopping centers, organized industry, etc.

Previous research has found butyltin pollution at dumping sites, which are the final fate of dredged material mostly originating from harbors and navigation systems. The distribution and impacts of butyltins were assessed in sediments at 12 dumping sites of China. Total butyltins (monobutyltin, dibutyltin, and tributyltin) concentrations ranged from 1.76 to 486.62 ng Sn g -1 dw. This study also presents evidence of considerable historic inputs of tributyltin (TBT) to Dumping sites 01, 05, 06, 08, 09 and 11, with evidence of heavier recent TBT input at Dumping site 04 and 10. The butyltin contamination at dumping sites was comparatively light and historic compared to research in other countries, but was more serious than other sea regions. TBT levels at Dumping site 09 probably have negative effects on biological systems. The US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) operates and maintains numerous projects in support of its various civil works missions including flood damage risk reduction, navigation, and ecosystem restoration. Originally authorized on an economic basis, these projects may produce a broad array of unaccounted for ecosystem services (ESs) that contribute to overall human, societal, and environmental well-being. Efforts are underway to capture the full array of environmental, economic, and social impacts of these projects. Methods are needed to identify relevant ESs generated by these nature-based projects and to measure their contribution to societal well-being with an emphasis placed on use of readily available data. Performance metrics were collected to capture the benefits of strategic placement of dredged material in river systems to allow formation of islands that produce a wide array of ESs. These performance metrics can be converted to ESs with market value or combined in a decision analytical approach to demonstrate the relative gain in utility. This approach is demonstrated on a riverine island created on the Atchafalaya River, Louisiana, as a result of the strategic placement of dredged material. The outcomes foster integration of ES assessment into project design and management practices and support more comprehensive project evaluation and widespread application. It has been shown that the current approach to the assessment of contamination in the sediments obtained during the dredging works in the Baltic countries indicates the presence of "non-contaminated" dredged material. The concentration limits of heavy metals, Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs), Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) have been exceeded only in 1% of the samples obtained during the dredging works (2005-2015) within the Polish coastal zone. After 2008, no contaminated sediments have been found. Also, in the remaining Baltic countries, sediments are very rarely contaminated. As a result of this assessment, the sediments can be stored in the sea or have a practical application. However, it has been questioned whether the large cost of determining the numerous chemical parameters is justified. It has been proposed to carry out simple screening tests. In 2014, the concentrations of 13 heavy metals in surface sediments from 14 sampling stations were analyzed and compared to samples from previous years to evaluate the remediation effectiveness of the "rest-year" (RY) system and capping with dredged material at the Yellow Sea-Byung dumping site offshore Korea. Since the 2006 introduction of the RY system, annual variations in metal concentrations at stations within the RY zone have gradually decreased over time. Heavy metal concentrations at most stations were lower than sediment quality guidelines, indicating the success of the RY system. Additionally, the effects of capping the contaminated sediment with dredged materials were investigated. The results indicate that dredged materials successfully capped the contaminated sediment within the dredged material dumping area, as the concentrations of Cr and total organic carbon were significantly reduced. This article deals with the legal and practical recommendations for the management of dredged material in the riparian countries of the Baltic Sea. The recommendations are contained in three conventions: LC, 2000. London Convention (1972), Convention on the Protection of the Marine Environment of the Baltic Sea area (Helsinki Convention) (1992), the OSPAR Convention (1972). Different approaches to evaluating the contamination level of dredge spoils, used by the Baltic Sea riparian countries, have been characterized. The differences in those approaches manifest themselves by various concentration limits for contaminants, which form a basis for the classification of dredged material as either contaminated or non-contaminated, and thus determine how the spoils will be processed further. Based on the collected information about the concentration limits for contaminants of surface sediments in the coastal ports, it was pointed out that it is necessary to conduct routine monitoring of heavy metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, polychlorinated biphenyls, tributyltin, and petroleum hydrocarbons in dredged sediments in all the Baltic Sea states. On the other hand, the monitoring of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/furans, organochlorine, and organophosphoric pesticides is only needed in locations that are suspected of historical or being the local contamination sources. Due to significant economic limitations of chemical determinations, it is important to consider a simple screening test of sediment that would say whether sediment may be "contaminated" and qualifies for more detailed and costly chemical research. It may be typical basic physical-chemical analysis of sediments or ecotoxicological classification of sediments.Despite environmentally friendly tendencies, the practical application of dredged material within the Baltic Sea area is very limited. Dredged material is most frequently stored at the specifically designated sites. From among the practical uses of dredge spoils, beach nourishment is of the highest significance.In the conclusion, the new proposed management procedure of dredged material was presented.

More than 1.15 million cubic meters (1.5 million cubic yards) of sediment require annual removal from harbors and ports along Ohio's Lake Erie coast. Disposing of these materials into landfills depletes land resources, while open water placement of these materials deteriorates water quality. There are more than 14,000 acres of revitalizing brownfields in Cleveland, U.S., many containing up to 90% impervious surface, which does not allow "infiltration" based stormwater practices required by contemporary site-based stormwater regulation. This study investigates the potential of sintering the dredged material from the Harbor of Cleveland in Lake Erie to produce lightweight aggregate (LWA), and apply the LWA to green roof construction. Chemical and thermal analyses revealed the sintered material can serve for LWA production when preheated at 550 °C and sintered at a higher temperature. Through dewatering, drying, sieving, pellet making, preheating, and sintering with varying temperatures (900-1100 °C), LWAs with porous microstructures are produced with specific gravities ranging from 1.46 to 1.74, and water absorption capacities ranging from 11% to 23%. The water absorption capacity of the aggregate decreases as sintering temperature increases. The LWA was incorporated into the growing media of a green roof plot, which has higher water retention capacity than the conventional green roof system.

The potential impact of dredged sediment has been assessed at sixteen areas of the high-traffic port of Vilagarcia (Northwest Spanish Atlantic coast). The assessment has been done by three weight-of-evidence tools, which integrated data on sediment characteristics and toxicity responses of Ampelisca brevicornis, Vibrio fischeri and eggs and embryos of Paracentrotus lividus. Two of the tools also represented management options regarding the disposal of dredged material. The comparison of the logic in these tools revealed essential differences in the type and the necessity of bioassays and threshold values for chemical concentrations. However, despite this difference, assessment results and the derived management options coincided in most of the sediments. The potential toxicity of sediments was relatively low especially for eggs and embryos possibly due to different contaminant availability in solid and liquid phases. The importance of a battery of toxicity tests in the dredged material quality assessment has been emphasized to avoid an underestimation of sediment toxicity for solid phase organisms, if only liquid phase responses are considered. The potential false implications, which may result from the application of the third tool, were highlighted. The maintenance of navigation channels to ports and the development of their facilities present a need to conduct dredging operations, and the subsequent disposal of dredged material at sea. Contaminant concentrations in candidate dredged material are determined and their possible impacts considered during the licensing process, which can result in the exclusion of some material from sea disposal. Monitoring of disposal sites is conducted in order to ensure that no undesirable impacts are occurring. In this study we consider the levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in sediments at a number of disposal sites monitored in 2013 and variations in concentrations over time at three sites during the period 2008-2013. These were assessed using established sediment quality guidelines. The results of sediment quality assessment by two different weight-of-evidence methodologies were compared. Both methodologies used the same dataset but as criteria and procedures were different, the results emphasized different aspects of sediment contamination. One of the methodologies integrated the data by means of a multivariate analysis and suggested bioavailability of contaminants and their spatial distribution. The other methodology, used in the dredged material management framework recently proposed in Spain, evaluated sediment toxicity in general by assigning categories. Despite the differences in the interpretation and presentation of results, the methodologies evaluated sediment risk similarly, taking into account chemical concentrations and toxicological effects. Comparison of the results of different approaches is important to define their limitations and thereby avoid implications of potential environmental impacts from different management options, as in the case of dredged material risk assessment. Consistent results of these two methodologies emphasized validity and robustness of the integrated, weight-of-evidence, approach to sediment quality assessment. Dredged material is a potential resource for beneficial use for create/improve subtidal habitats. In a northwestern Adriatic lagoon, dredged sand was placed in inner areas with the management objective of improving the characteristics of the muddy areas being recharged. With this study we investigated the recolonization dynamics of benthic communities following the placement of dredged sand in a microtidal lagoon. The disposal of dredged sand had an immediate and negative effect on resident fauna. After an initial reduction, benthic communities followed different recovery pathways. One year after disposal, we recorded an almost complete recovery of the benthic invertebrates in terms of univariate parameters. Despite multivariate analyses still showed significantly different community structures, the trajectories of recovery for disposal areas converged towards the same basin of attraction of control areas. This work offers an environmental assessment of a dredged sediment disposal area in Santos bay, situated on the central coast of the São Paulo State, Brazil. Sediment quality was evaluated through physicochemical analysis and toxicity tests of sediments collected in the disposal site and adjacent area. The physicochemical characterization of the sediments involved grain size distribution, concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), chlorinated and aromatic hydrocarbons, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), pesticides, phthalates, metals and nutrients. Acute and chronic toxicity tests were employed, using amphipods (Tiburonella viscana) and sea urchins (Lythechinus variegatus), respectively. Results revealed toxicity by all the methods applied here, suggesting that the area of disposal of dredged material is significantly altered with respect to sediment quality and probably capable of generating deleterious effects on the local biota. Aiming to elucidate the association between the distinct environmental variables and the biological effects measured in laboratory, Factor Analysis was performed. Results revealed that despite most contaminant concentrations were found below the limits established by Brazilian legislation, biological effects were related to metals (chronic toxicity) and organic compounds (acute toxicity). The application of multivariate analysis proved to be particularly useful to assess and interpret the results in an integrated way, particularly due to the large number of parameters analyzed in environmental assessments, and should be applied in future studies., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier B.V. Despite legislative interventions since the 1980s, contemporary concentrations of organotin compounds in marine sediments still impose restrictions on the disposal of dredged material in the UK. Here, we analyse temporal and spatial data to assess the effectiveness of the ban on the use of TBT paints in reducing concentrations at disposal sites. At a national scale, there was a statistically significant increase in the proportion of samples in which the concentration was below the limit of detection (LOD) from 1998 to 2010. This was observed for sediments both inside and outside the disposal sites. However, this temporal decline in organotin concentration is disposal site-specific. Of the four sites studied in detail, two displayed significant increases in proportion of samples below LOD over time.
