Efficient and precise calculations of thermal transport properties and figures of merit, alongside a deep comprehension of thermal transport mechanisms, are essential for the practical utilization of advanced thermoelectric materials. In this study, we explore the microscopic processes governing thermal transport in the distinguished crystalline material Tl 9 SbTe 6 by integrating a unified thermal transport theory with machine learning-assisted self-consistent phonon calculations. Leveraging machine learning potentials, we expedite the analysis of phonon energy shifts, higher-order scattering mechanisms, and thermal conductivity arising from various contributing factors, such as population and coherence channels. Our finding unveils an exceptionally low thermal conductivity of 0.31 W m -1 K -1 at room temperature, a result that closely correlates with experimental observations. Notably, we observe that the off-diagonal terms of heat flux operators play a significant role in shaping the overall lattice thermal conductivity of Tl 9 SbTe 6 , where the ultralow thermal conductivity resembles that of glass due to limited group velocities. Furthermore, we achieve a maximum ZT value of 3.17 in the c -axis orientation for p -type Tl 9 SbTe 6 at 600 K and an optimal ZT value of 2.26 in the a -axis and b -axis direction for n -type Tl 9 SbTe 6 at 500 K. The crystalline Tl 9 SbTe 6 not only showcases remarkable thermal insulation but also demonstrates impressive electrical properties owing to the dual-degeneracy phenomenon within its valence band. These results not only elucidate the underlying reasons for the exceptional thermoelectric performance of Tl 9 SbTe 6 but also suggest potential avenues for further experimental exploration.

In thermoelectric, phase interface engineering proves effective in reducing the lattice thermal conductivity via interface scattering and amplifying the density-of-states effective mass by energy filtering. However, the indiscriminate introduction of phase interfaces inevitably leads to diminished carrier mobility. Moreover, relying on a singular energy barrier is insufficient for comprehensive filtration of low-energy carriers throughout the entire temperature range. Addressing these challenges, we advocate the establishment of a composite phase interface using atomic layer deposition (ALD) technology. This design aims to effectively decouple the interrelated thermoelectric parameters in ZrNiSn. The engineered coherent dual-interface energy barriers substantially enhance the density-of-states effective mass across the entire temperature spectrum while preser carrier mobility. Simultaneously, the strong interface scattering on phonons is crucial for curtailing lattice thermal conductivity. Consequently, a 40-cycles TiO 2 coating on ZrNi 1.03 Sn 0.99 Sb 0.01 achieves an unprecedented zT value of 1.3 at 873 K. The toxicity of organophosphorus pesticides (OPs) can catastrophically cause liver cell damage and inhibit the catalytic activity of cholinesterase. We designed and synthesized a near-infrared fluorescent probe HP-LZB with large Stokes shift which can specifically identify and detect butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) and visually explore the interaction between OPs and endogenous BChE in living cells. Fluorescence was turned on when HP-LZB was hydrolyzed into HP-LZ in the presence of BChE, and OPs could inhibit BChE's activity resulting in a decrease of fluorescence. Six OPs including three oxon pesticides (paraoxon, chlorpyrifos oxon and diazoxon) and their corresponding thion pesticides (parathion, chlorpyrifos and diazinon) were investigated. Both in vitro and cell experiments indicated that only oxon pesticides could inhibit BChE's activity. The limits of detection (LODs) of paraoxon, chlorpyrifos oxon and diazoxon were as low as 0.295, 0.007 and 0.011 ng mL -1 respectively and the recovery of OPs residue in vegetable samples was satisfactory. Thion pesticides themselves could hardly inhibit the activity of BChE and are only toxic when they are converted to their corresponding oxon form in the metabolic process. However, in this work, thion pesticides were found not be oxidized into their oxon forms in living HepG2 cells due to the lack of cytochrome P450 in hepatoma HepG2 cell lines. Elastic strain in Cu catalysts enhances their selectivity for the electrochemical CO 2 reduction reaction (eCO 2 RR), particularly toward the formation of multicarbon (C 2+ ) products. However, the reasons for this selectivity and the effect of catalyst precursors have not yet been clarified. Hence, we employed a redox strategy to induce strain on the surface of Cu nanocrystals. Oxidative transformation was employed to convert Cu nanocrystals to Cu x O nanocrystals; these were subsequently electrochemically reduced to form Cu catalysts, while maintaining their compressive strain. Using a flow cell configuration, a current density of 1 A/cm 2 and Faradaic efficiency exceeding 80% were realized for the C 2+ products. The selectivity ratio of C 2+ /C1 was also remarkable at 9.9, surpassing that observed for the Cu catalyst under tensile strain by approximately 7.6 times. In-situ Raman and infrared spectroscopy revealed a decrease in the coverage of K + ion-hydrated water (K·H 2 O) on the compressively strained Cu catalysts, consistent with molecular dynamics simulations and density functional theory calculations. Finite element method simulations confirmed that reducing the coverage of coordinated K·H 2 O water increased the probability of intermediate reactants interacting with the surface, thereby promoting efficient C-C coupling and enhancing the yield of C 2+ products. Background: Multi-population genomic prediction can rapidly expand the size of the reference population and improve genomic prediction ability. Machine learning (ML) algorithms have shown advantages in single-population genomic prediction of phenotypes. However, few studies have explored the effectiveness of ML methods for multi-population genomic prediction., Results: In this study, 3720 Yorkshire pigs from Austria and four breeding farms in China were used, and single-trait genomic best linear unbiased prediction (ST-GBLUP), multitrait GBLUP (MT-GBLUP), Bayesian Horseshoe (BayesHE), and three ML methods (support vector regression (SVR), kernel ridge regression (KRR) and AdaBoost.R2) were compared to explore the optimal method for joint genomic prediction of phenotypes of Chinese and Austrian pigs through 10 replicates of fivefold cross-validation. In this study, we tested the performance of different methods in two scenarios: (i) including only one Austrian population and one Chinese pig population that were genetically linked based on principal component analysis (PCA) (designated as the "two-population scenario") and (ii) adding reference populations that are unrelated based on PCA to the above two populations (designated as the "multi-population scenario"). Our results show that, the use of MT-GBLUP in the two-population scenario resulted in an improvement of 7.1% in predictive ability compared to ST-GBLUP, while the use of SVR and KKR yielded improvements in predictive ability of 4.5 and 5.3%, respectively, compared to MT-GBLUP. SVR and KRR also yielded lower mean square errors (MSE) in most population and trait combinations. In the multi-population scenario, improvements in predictive ability of 29.7, 24.4 and 11.1% were obtained compared to ST-GBLUP when using, respectively, SVR, KRR, and AdaBoost.R2. However, compared to MT-GBLUP, the potential of ML methods to improve predictive ability was not demonstrated., Conclusions: Our study demonstrates that ML algorithms can achieve better prediction performance than multitrait GBLUP models in multi-population genomic prediction of phenotypes when the populations have similar genetic backgrounds; however, when reference populations that are unrelated based on PCA are added, the ML methods did not show a benefit. The ultrahigh flexibility and elasticity achieved in freestanding single-crystalline ferroelectric oxide membranes have attracted much attention recently. However, for antiferroelectric oxides, the flexibility limit and fundamental mechanism in their freestanding membranes are still not explored clearly. Here, we successfully fabricate freestanding single-crystalline PbZrO 3 membranes by a water-soluble sacrificial layer technique. They exhibit good antiferroelectricity and have a commensurate/incommensurate modulated microstructure. Moreover, they also have good shape recoverability when bending with a small radius of curvature (about 2.4 μm for the thickness of 120 nm), corresponding to a bending strain of 2.5%. They could tolerate a maximum bending strain as large as 3.5%, far beyond their bulk counterpart. Our atomistic simulations reveal that this remarkable flexibility originates from the antiferroelectric-ferroelectric phase transition with the aid of polarization rotation. The dermis and epidermis, crucial structural layers of the skin, encompass appendages, hair follicles (HFs), and intricate cellular heterogeneity. However, an integrated spatiotemporal transcriptomic atlas of embryonic skin has not yet been described and would be invaluable for studying skin-related diseases in humans. Here, single-cell and spatial transcriptomic analyses are performed on skin samples of normal and hairless fetal pigs across four developmental periods. The cross-species comparison of skin cells illustrated that the pig epidermis is more representative of the human epidermis than mice epidermis. Moreover, Phenome-wide association study analysis revealed that the conserved genes between pigs and humans are strongly associated with human skin-related diseases. In the epidermis, two lineage differentiation trajectories describe hair follicle (HF) morphogenesis and epidermal development. By comparing normal and hairless fetal pigs, it is found that the hair placode (Pc), the most characteristic initial structure in HFs, arises from progenitor-like OGN + /UCHL1 + cells. These progenitors appear earlier in development than the previously described early Pc cells and exhibit abnormal proliferation and migration during differentiation in hairless pigs. Manipulation of directional magnon propagation, known as magnon spin current, is essential for developing magnonic devices featuring nonvolatile functionalities and ultralow power consumption. Magnon spin current can usually be modulated by magnetic field or current-induced spin torques. However, these approaches may lead to energy dissipation due to Joule heating. Electric-field switching of magnon spin current without charge current is highly preferred but challenging to realize. By integrating magnonic and piezoelectric materials, the manipulation of the magnon spin current generated by the spin Seebeck effect in the ferrimagnetic insulator Gd 3 Fe 5 O 12 (GdIG) film on a piezoelectric substrate is demonstrated. Reversible electric-field switching of magnon polarization without applied charge current is observed. Through strain-mediated magnetoelectric coupling, the electric field induces the magnetic compensation transition between two magnetic states of the GdIG, resulting in its magnetization reversal and the simultaneous switching of magnon spin current. Peripheral nerve injury (PNI) is one of the most serious causes of disability and loss of work capacity of younger individuals. Although PNS has a certain degree of regeneration, there are still challenges like disordered growth, neuroma formation, and incomplete regeneration. Regarding the management of PNI, conventional methods such as surgery, pharmacotherapy, and rehabilitative therapy. Treatment strategies vary depending on the severity of the injury. While for the long nerve defect, autologous nerve grafting is commonly recognized as the preferred surgical approach. Nevertheless, due to lack of donor sources, neurological deficits and the low regeneration efficiency of grafted nerves, nerve guide conduits (NGCs) are recognized as a future promising technology in recent years. Acetaminophen (APAP) overdose, also known as APAP poisoning, may directly result in hepatic injury, acute liver failure and even death. Nowadays, APAP-induced liver injury (AILI) has become an urgent public health issue in the developing world so the early accurate diagnosis and the revelation of underlying molecular mechanism of AILI are of great significance. As a major detoxifying organ, liver is responsible for metabolizing chemical substances, in which human carboxylesterase-2 (CES2) is present. Hence, we chose CES2 as an effective biomarker for evaluating AILI. By developing a CES2-activatable and water-soluble fluorescent probe PFQ-E with superior affinity (K m  = 5.9 μM), great sensitivity (limit of detection = 1.05 ng/mL), near-infrared emission (655 nm) and large Stokes shift (135 nm), activity and distribution of CES2 in cells were determined or imaged effectively. More importantly, the APAP-induced hepatotoxicity and the underlying molecular mechanism of pathogenesis of AILI were investigated by measuring the "light-up" response of PFQ-E towards endogenous CES2 in vivo for the first time. Asphaltene is often regarded as an undesirable by-product of petroleum processing, possesses vast reserves with little market value. The typical routes of consuming asphaltene, namely burning and landfilling, pose significant environmental challenges. In this study, low-value asphaltene is converted into high-value ethylated carbon clusters (ECC) using a supercritical ethanol technique. The resulting ECC powder demonstrates promising properties for high density polyethylene (HDPE) composite applications. The effects of incorporating ECC on the mechanical, gas barrier, and anti-aging properties of the composite are investigated. Results show that a 1 wt.% ECC led to a 4.2% and 43.5% increase in tensile strength and elongation at break, a reduction of 45.8% and 30.7% in oxygen and carbon dioxide permeability. Furthermore, ECC exhibits effective UV spectrum absorption and conversion in the wavelength range of 400-600 nm, providing protection against UV spectrum damage to HDPE. The incorporation of ECC not only enhances the properties of polymer composites but also sequesters carbon within the polymer matrix, enabling the valorization of asphaltene while mitigating environmental impact., (© 2023 The Authors. The cross-species characterization of evolutionary changes in the functional genome can facilitate the translation of genetic findings across species and the interpretation of the evolutionary basis underlying complex phenotypes. Yet, this has not been fully explored between cattle, sheep, goats, and other mammals. Here, we systematically characterized the evolutionary dynamics of DNA methylation and gene expression in 3 somatic tissues (i.e. brain, liver, and skeletal muscle) and sperm across 7 mammalian species, including 3 ruminant livestock species (cattle, sheep, and goats), humans, pigs, mice, and dogs, by generating and integrating 160 DNA methylation and transcriptomic data sets. We demonstrate dynamic changes of DNA hypomethylated regions and hypermethylated regions in tissue-type manner across cattle, sheep, and goats. Specifically, based on the phylo-epigenetic model of DNA methylome, we identified a total of 25,074 hypomethylated region extension events specific to cattle, which participated in rewiring tissue-specific regulatory network. Furthermore, by integrating genome-wide association studies of 50 cattle traits, we provided novel insights into the genetic and evolutionary basis of complex phenotypes in cattle. Overall, our study provides a valuable resource for exploring the evolutionary dynamics of the functional genome and highlights the importance of cross-species characterization of multiomics data sets for the evolutionary interpretation of complex phenotypes in cattle livestock., (© The Author(s) 2024. The Farm Animal Genotype-Tissue Expression (FarmGTEx) project has been established to develop a public resource of genetic regulatory variants in livestock, which is essential for linking genetic polymorphisms to variation in phenotypes, helping fundamental biological discovery and exploitation in animal breeding and human biomedicine. Here we show results from the pilot phase of PigGTEx by processing 5,457 RNA-sequencing and 1,602 whole-genome sequencing samples passing quality control from pigs. We build a pig genotype imputation panel and associate millions of genetic variants with five types of transcriptomic phenotypes in 34 tissues. We evaluate tissue specificity of regulatory effects and elucidate molecular mechanisms of their action using multi-omics data. Leveraging this resource, we decipher regulatory mechanisms underlying 207 pig complex phenotypes and demonstrate the similarity of pigs to humans in gene expression and the genetic regulation behind complex phenotypes, supporting the importance of pigs as a human biomedical model., (© 2024. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with crown ether units have drawn great attention due to their potential applications in adsorption, catalysis, and sensing. However, employing crown ethers to construct COFs is still challenging in light of the flexible nature of macrocycles. Here, a highly crystalline one-dimensional covalent organic framework (1D-18C6-COF) with crown ether units on the ribbon edge was synthesized. The water-mediated hydrogen bond network and π-π stacking hold the 1D COF ribbons together. The combination of experimental and DFT studies demonstrated that the hydrogen bond network plays a crucial role in the structure crystallinity. The 1D-18C6-COF was applied as an adsorbent for strontium, and it exhibited rapid kinetics with good selectivity. In the competitive adsorption experiment, a separation factor of 1900 was achieved, representing one of the largest values for cesium/strontium separation. This work provides new insights into the design and functional exploration of crystalline COFs with flexible units.

Cysteine (Cys) distribute widely in organisms as the crucial components of proteins, and play important roles in pathophysiological processes of human body. Low level of Cys might induce hepatic injury, edema and growth retardation, while superfluous level of Cys is found to be closely relevant to Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. In this work, a novel near-infrared (NIR) fluorescent probe PFQ-C was developed for highly selective detection of Cys in living cells and mice by utilizing the cyclization removal reaction between acrylate group and Cys. The superior sensitivity (limit of detection, 0.036 μM), NIR emission (655 nm), large Stokes shift (135 nm) and low cytotoxicity of the probe highlight its broad potential for future clinical applications. The response mechanism of the probe towards Cys was clarified by spectroscopy, chromatography and theoretical calculation. An electrical-biased or mechanical-loaded scanning probe written on the ferroelectric surface can generate programmable domain nanopatterns for ultra-scaled and reconfigurable nanoscale electronics. Fabricating ferroelectric domain patterns by direct-writing as quickly as possible is highly desirable for high response rate devices. Using monolayer α-In 2 Se 3 ferroelectric with ≈1.2 nm thickness and intrinsic out-of-plane polarization as an example, a writing-speed dependent effect on ferroelectric domain switching is discovered. The results indicate that the threshold voltages and threshold forces for domain switching can be increased from -4.2 to -5 V and from 365 to 1216 nN, respectively, as the writing-speed increases from 2.2 to 10.6 µm s -1 . The writing-speed dependent threshold voltages can be attributed to the nucleations of reoriented ferroelectric domains, in which sufficient time is needed for subsequent domain growth. The writing-speed dependent threshold forces can be attributed to the flexoelectric effect. Furthermore, the electrical-mechanical coupling can be employed to decrease the threshold force, achieving as low as ≈189±41 nN, a value smaller than those of perovskite ferroelectric films. A green, efficient and easy sample pretreatment method of magnetic ionic liquid-based liquid-liquid microextraction (MIL-based LLME) combined with a sensitive, rapid and precise analytical method of ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with triple-quadrupole tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-QqQ/MS 2 ) was developed to simultaneously - determining of neurotransmitters (NTs) in biosamples. Two magnetic ionic liquids (MILs), [P 6,6,6,14 ] 3 [GdCl 6 ] and [P 6,6,6,14 ] 2 [CoCl 4 ] tested, and the latter was selected as the extraction solvent due to its advantages of visual recognition, paramagnetic behavior and higher extraction efficiency. Facile magnetic separation of MIL containing analytes from matrix was realized by applying external magnetic field without rather than centrifugation. Experimental parameters that would influence the extraction efficiency, including type and amount of MIL, extraction time, speed of the vortex process, salt concentration, and environmental pH, were optimized obtained. The proposed method was successfully applied to the simultaneous extraction and determination of 20 NTs in human cerebrospinal fluid and plasma samples. Mo-Re pre-alloyed powders are crucial raw materials in fabricating Mo-Re alloys, and their properties can significantly impact the properties of the resulting alloys. The powders are usually produced by the co-reduction of a mixture of Mo and Re oxides. However, it remains unclear if the overall characteristics of the produced Mo-Re powders rely on the different combinations of the Mo and Re oxide precursors. Therefore, in this work, a comparative study is conducted on the co-reduction processes of different Mo oxides together with NH 4 ReO 4 , along with its influence on the size distribution and phase composition of the resulting Mo-10Re pre-alloyed powders. The results show that MoO 3 is more promising than MoO 2 as a precursor material. The powders fabricated using MoO 3 , when compared to MoO 2 , have a much more uniform size distribution, with a primary particle size ranging from 0.5-4 μm. In addition, it is also beneficial to achieve atomic-scale homogeneous mixing with Mo and Re elements and the formation of a solely Mo(Re) solid solution if MoO 3 is used as a precursor oxide. In contrast, such desirable features were not identified when using the MoO 2 route. The reason for this discrepancy may relate to whether Mo-O-Re metallurgical bonding has formed during the co-reduction process.

The interaction between aluminum (Al) and F and O atoms is essential to understand the etching process of Al and alumina (Al 2 O 3 ) by fluorine-containing gases. In addition, it also has an influence on the corrosion behavior of Al devices, e.g. , the Al collector in lithium-ion batteries operates in fluorine-containing electrolytes. However, the understanding of the structural evolution of the Al surface by fluorination at the atomistic level still remains elusive. Here, the thermodynamic and kinetic behaviors of F adatoms as well as co-adsorbed F and O adatoms on typical Al surfaces have been systematically investigated by combining density functional theory (DFT) calculations, canonical Monte Carlo (CMC) simulations and reactive molecular dynamics (RMD) simulations. The results of DFT calculations indicate that there is a repulsion (about 0.07 eV on Al(111) and Al(110), and 0.7 eV on Al(100)) between the first nearest neighboring (1NN) F adatoms, while an attraction of 0.14 eV on Al(111) exists within a 1NN F-O pair. CMC simulations reveal that the configurations of co-adsorbed F and O adatoms on the Al(111) surface at medium to low temperature (<600 K) and low total coverage (<0.2 monolayer, ML) have F adatoms dispersed in the hexagonal islands of O adatoms due to the attraction within the O-O and F-O pairs and the repulsion between F adatoms. As the coverage increases, the surface undergoes serious deformation. The average 1NN coordination numbers (1st CN) of O-to-O, F-to-O and F-to-F are six, three and zero, respectively. As the temperature increases, the interactions among adsorbates begin to be disrupted: the 1st CNs of O-to-O and F-to-O decrease, while that of F-to-F increases. The O-F hexagonal pattern remains until above the Al melting temperature (>1200 K). For F adatoms, both their migration on the surface and the penetration into the subsurface are easier than those of O adatoms, confirmed by both the DFT and RMD simulations. Our study on the co-adsorbates with opposite lateral interactions is instructive for understanding the thermal etching of Al and Al 2 O 3 by fluorine-containing compounds.

Objective. Whole slide images (WSIs) play a crucial role in histopathological analysis. The extremely high resolution of WSIs makes it laborious to obtain fine-grade annotations. Hence, classifying WSIs with only slide-level labels is often cast as a multiple instance learning (MIL) problem where a WSI is regarded as a bag and tiled into patches that are regarded as instances. The purpose of this study is to develop a novel MIL method for classifying WSIs with only slide-level labels in histopathology analysis. Approach. We propose a novel iterative MIL (IMIL) method for WSI classification where instance representations and bag representations are learned collaboratively. In particular, IMIL iteratively finetune the feature extractor with selected instances and corresponding pseudo labels generated by attention-based MIL pooling. Additionally, three procedures for robust training of IMIL are adopted: (1) the feature extractor is initialized by utilizing self-supervised learning methods on all instances, (2) samples for finetuning the feature extractor are selected according to the attention scores, and (3) a confidence-aware loss is applied for finetuning the feature extractor. Main results. Our proposed IMIL-SimCLR archives the optimal classification performance on Camelyon16 and KingMed-Lung. Compared with the baseline method CLAM, IMIL-SimCLR significantly outperforms it by 3.71% higher average area under curve (AUC) on Camelyon16 and 4.25% higher average AUC on KingMed-Lung. Additionally, our proposed IMIL-ImageNet achieve the optimal classification performance on TCGA-Lung with the average AUC of 96.55% and the accuracy of 96.76%, which significantly outperforms the baseline method CLAM by 1.65% higher average AUC and 2.09% higher average accuracy respectively. As the world is committed to reach carbon peak by 2030 and net zero by 2050, the use of coal as an energy source is facing unprecedented challenges. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), global annual coal demand is estimated to drop from more than 5640 million tonnes of coal equivalent (Mtce) in 2021 to 540 Mtce in 2050 under the net zero emission scenario, mostly being replaced by renewable energy such as solar and wind. Therefore, the coal industry is vigorously seeking alternative applications to keep it thriving, and nanotechnology can be one of the contributors. Herein, the challenges to coal-based carbon nanomaterials syntheses are outlined, along with a path toward commercialization. Highly efficient and eco-friendly thermoelectric generators rely on low-cost and nontoxic semiconductors with high symmetry and ultralow lattice thermal conductivity κ L . We report the rational synthesis of the novel cubic (Ag, Se)-doped Cu 2 GeTe 3 semiconductors. A localized symmetry breakdown (LSB) was found in the composition of Cu 1.9 Ag 0.1 GeTe 1.5 Se 1.5 (i.e., CAGTS15) with an ultralow κ L of 0.37 W/mK at 723 K, the lowest value outperforming all Cu 2 GeCh 3 (Ch = S, Se, and Te). A joint investigation of synchrotron X-ray techniques identifies the LSB embedded into the cubic CAGTS15 host matrix. This LSB is an Ångström-scale orthorhombic symmetry unit, characteristic of multiple bond lengths, large anisotropic atomic displacements, and distinct local chemical coordination of anions. Computational results highlight that such an unusual orthorhombic symmetry demonstrates low-frequency phonon modes, which become softer and more predominant with increasing temperatures. This unconventional LSB promotes bond complexity and phonon scattering, highly beneficial for extraordinarily low lattice thermal conductivity.

The adsorption and dissociation of H 2 O on Al surfaces including crystal planes and nanoparticles (ANPs) are systematically investigated by using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. H 2 O adsorption strength follows the order ANPs > Al(110) > Al(111) > Al(100). Due to the smaller cluster deformation caused by the moderate H 2 O adsorption, the relative magnitude of H 2 O adsorption strength on ANPs and crystal planes is opposite to the trend of adatoms like O* and/or N*. The energy barrier for the decomposition of H 2 O into H* and OH* is larger on ANPs than on crystal planes, and it decreases with the increasing cluster size. Due to the competition between the hydrogen (H) bonding among water molecules and the interaction between the water molecules and the substrate, the adsorption strength of H 2 O first increases and then decreases with the increase of water coverage. Moreover, each H 2 O molecule can efficiently form up to two H bonds with two H 2 O molecules. As a result, H 2 O molecules tend to aggregate into cyclic structures rather than chains on Al surfaces. Furthermore, the dissociation energy barrier of H 2 O drops with the increasing water coverage due to the presence of H bonds. Our results provide insight into interactions between water and Al, which can be extended to understand the interaction between water and other metal surfaces.

The ensemble effect due to variation of Pd content in Pd-Au alloys have been widely investigated for several important reactions, including CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR), however, identifying the stable Pd arrangements on the alloyed surface and picking out the active sites are still challenging. Here we use a density functional theory (DFT) based machine-learning (ML) approach to efficiently find the low-energy configurations of Pd-Au(111) surface alloys and the potentially active sites for CO 2 RR, fully covering the Pd content from 0 to 100 %. The ML model is actively learning process to improve the predicting accuracy for the configuration formation energy and to find the stable Pd-Au(111) alloyed surfaces, respectively. The local surface properties of adsorption sites are classified into two classes by the K-means clustering approach, which are closely related to the Pd content on Au surface. The classification is reflected in the variation of adsorption energy of CO and H: In the low Pd content range (0-60 %) the adsorption energies over the surface alloys can be tuned significantly, and in the medium Pd content (37-68 %), the catalytic activity of surface alloys for CO 2 RR can be increased by increase the Pd content and attributed to the meta-stable active site over the surface. The piezoelectric properties of lead zirconate titanate [Pb(Zr,Ti)O 3 or PZT] ceramics could be enhanced by fabricating textured ceramics that would align the crystal grains along specific orientations. We present a seed-passivated texturing process to fabricate textured PZT ceramics by using newly developed Ba(Zr,Ti)O 3 microplatelet templates. This process not only ensures the template-induced grain growth in titanium-rich PZT layers but also facilitates desired composition through interlayer diffusion of zirconium and titanium. We successfully prepared textured PZT ceramics with outstanding properties, including Curie temperatures of 360°C, piezoelectric coefficients d 33 of 760 picocoulombs per newton and g 33 of 100 millivolt meters per newton, and electromechanical couplings k 33 of 0.85. This study addresses the challenge of fabricating textured rhombohedral PZT ceramics by suppressing the otherwise severe chemical reaction between PZT powder and titanate templates.

Combined with the inherent spin-orbital coupling effect, the elemental ferroelectricity of monolayer Bi (bismuthene) is the critical property that renders this system a 2D ferroelectric topological insulator. Here, using first-principles calculations, we systematically investigate the ferroelectric polarization in bismuthene nanoribbons and discover the width size limiting effect arising from the edge effects. The decreasing width led to the spontaneous transformation of the zigzag (ZZ) and armchair (AC) paired Bi nanoribbons into newly discovered high-symmetric nonpolarized nanoribbons. For ZZ-paired nanoribbons, the driving force of the phase transition is attributed to the depolarization field, similar to the conventional perovskite ferroelectric thin films. Instead, edge stress as a novel mechanism played a major role in the phase transition of AC-paired nanoribbons. Inspired by such a revealed mechanism, the phase transition and related ultrahigh piezoelectricity can be achieved by strain engineering in Bi nanoribbons, which could enable new applications for 2D ferroelectric devices.

Reproductive traits have a key impact on production efficiency in the pig industry. It is necessary to identify the genetic structure of potential genes that influence reproductive traits. In this study, a genome-wide association study (GWAS) based on chip and imputed data of five reproductive traits, namely, total number born (TNB), number born alive (NBA), litter birth weight (LBW), gestation length (GL), and number of weaned (NW), was performed in Yorkshire pigs. In total, 272 of 2844 pigs with reproductive records were genotyped using KPS Porcine Breeding SNP Chips, and then chip data were imputed to sequencing data using two online software programs: the Pig Haplotype Reference Panel (PHARP v2) and Swine Imputation Server (SWIM 1.0). After quality control, we performed GWAS based on chip data and the two different imputation databases by using fixed and random model circulating probability unification (FarmCPU) models. We discovered 71 genome-wide significant SNPs and 25 potential candidate genes (e.g., SMAD4 , RPS6KA2 , CAMK2A , NDST1 , and ADCY5 ). Functional enrichment analysis revealed that these genes are mainly enriched in the calcium signaling pathway, ovarian steroidogenesis, and GnRH signaling pathways. In conclusion, our results help to clarify the genetic basis of porcine reproductive traits and provide molecular markers for genomic selection in pig breeding.

Peripheral nerve injury (PNI) is one of the most common neurological diseases. Recent studies on nerve cells have provided new ideas for the regeneration of peripheral nerves and treatment of physical trauma or degenerative disease-induced loss of sensory and motor neuron functions. Accumulating evidence suggested that magnetic fields might have a significant impact on the growth of nerve cells. Studies have investigated different magnetic field properties (static or pulsed magnetic field) and intensities, various magnetic nanoparticle-encapsulating cytokines based on superparamagnetism, magnetically functionalized nanofibers, and their relevant mechanisms and clinical applications. The size of the reference population is critical in order to improve the accuracy of genomic prediction. Indeed, improving genomic prediction accuracy by combining multinational reference populations has proven to be effective. In this study, we investigated the improvement of genomic prediction accuracy in seven complex traits (i.e., milk yield; fat yield; protein yield; somatic cell count; body conformation; feet and legs; and mammary system conformation) by combining the Chinese and Nordic Holstein reference populations. The estimated genetic correlations between the Chinese and Nordic Holstein populations are high with respect to protein yield, fat yield, and milk yield-whereby these correlations range from 0.621 to 0.720-and are moderate with respect to somatic cell count (0.449), but low for the three conformation traits (which range from 0.144 to 0.236). When utilizing the joint reference data and a two-trait GBLUP model, the genomic prediction accuracy in the Chinese Holsteins improves considerably with respect to the traits with moderate-to-high genetic correlations, whereas the improvement in Nordic Holsteins is small. When compared with the single population analysis, using the joint reference population for genomic prediction in younger animals, results in a 2.3 to 8.1 percent improvement in accuracy. Meanwhile, 10 replications of five-fold cross-validation were also implemented in order to evaluate the performance of joint genomic prediction, thereby resulting in a 1.6 to 5.2 percent increase in accuracy. With respect to joint genomic prediction, the bias was found to be quite low. However, for traits with low genetic correlations, the joint reference data do not improve the prediction accuracy substantially for either population.

Lithium isotope separation has attracted extensive interest due to its important role in fusion and fission reactions. Up to now, it is still a great challenge to separate lithium isotopes ( 6 Li and 7 Li) in an efficient manner due to the low capture ability for lithium ions of related materials and highly similar physicochemical properties between lithium isotopes. In this work, three calix[4]arene-decorated crystalline covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with wave-like extension and AA-stacking configuration were designed and utilized for lithium adsorption and its isotope separation. Experimental studies show that these COFs exhibit an outstanding lithium adsorption capacity up to 94.66 mg·g -1 , which is about 2 times beyond that of adsorbents reported in the literature. The high adsorption capacity of COFs could be attributed to the abundant adsorption sites from calix[4]arene unit. More importantly, this study demonstrates for the first time that calixarene groups can separate lithium isotopes with an excellent separation factor up to 1.053 ± 0.002, comparable to the most successful solid-phase lithium separation adsorbent. The calculation based on density functional theory showed that calixarene played an important role in the lithium adsorption. Interestingly, the lithium isotope separation performance is mainly affected by the amine bridging units. This work demonstrated that calixarene COFs are promising adsorbents for lithium isotope separation.

Room-temperature out-of-plane two-dimensional ferroelectrics have promising applications in miniaturized non-volatile memory appliances. The feasible manipulation of polarization switching significantly influences the memory performance of ferroelectrics. However, conventional high-voltage-induced polarization switching inevitably generates charge injection or electric breakdown, and large-mechanical-loading-induced polarization switching may damage the structure of ferroelectrics. Hence, decreasing critical voltage/loading for ferroelectric polarization reversal is highly required. Herein, using atomic force microscopy experiments, the ferroelectric domain switching via both electric field and mechanical loading was demonstrated for an ultrathin (∼4.1 nm) CuInP 2 S 6 nanoflake. The relevant threshold voltage/loading for polarization switching was ∼ -5 V/1095 nN, resulting from the electric field and flexoelectric effect, respectively. Finally, the electrical-mechanical coupling was adopted to reduce the threshold voltage/loading of CuInP 2 S 6 significantly. It can be explained by the Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire double-well model. This effective way for easily tuning the polarization states of CuInP 2 S 6 opens up new prospects for mechanically written and electrically erased memory devices.

Manageable thermal expansion (MTE) of metal trifluorides can be achieved by introducing local structure distortion (LSD) in the negative thermal expansion ScF 3 . However, an open issue is why isostructural TiF 3 , free of LSD, exhibits positive thermal expansion. Herein, a combined analysis of synchrotron X-ray diffraction, X-ray pair distribution function, and rigorous first-principles calculations was performed to reveal the important role of itinerant electrons in mediating soft phonons and lattice dynamics. Metallic TiF 3 demonstrates itinerant electrons and a suppressed Grüneisen parameter γ ≈ -20, while insulating ScF 3 absence of itinerant electrons has a considerable γ ≈ -120. With increasing electron doping concentrations in ScF 3 , soft phonons become hardened and the γ is repressed significantly, identical to TiF 3 . The presented results update the thermal expansion transition mechanism in framework structure analogues and provide a practical approach to obtaining MTE without inducing sizable structure distortion.

Background: Average backfat thickness (BFT) is a critical complex trait in pig and an important indicator for fat deposition and lean rate. Usually, genome-wide association study (GWAS) was used to discover quantitative trait loci (QTLs) of BFT in a single population. However, the power of GWAS is limited by sample size in a single population. Alternatively, meta-analysis of GWAS (metaGWAS) is an attractive method to increase the statistical power by integrating data from multiple breeds and populations. The aim of this study is to identify shared genetic characterization of BFT across breeds in pigs via metaGWAS.  RESULTS: In this study, we performed metaGWAS on BFT using 15,353 pigs (5,143 Duroc, 7,275 Yorkshire, and 2,935 Landrace) from 19 populations. We detected 40 genome-wide significant SNPs (Bonferroni corrected P < 0.05) and defined five breed-shared QTLs in across-breed metaGWAS. Markers within the five QTL regions explained 7 ~ 9% additive genetic variance and showed strong heritability enrichment. Furthermore, by integrating information from multiple bioinformatics databases, we annotated 46 candidate genes located in the five QTLs. Among them, three important (MC4R, PPARD, and SLC27A1) and seven suggestive candidate genes (PHLPP1, NUDT3, ILRUN, RELCH, KCNQ5, ITPR3, and U3) were identified., Conclusion: QTLs and candidate genes underlying BFT across breeds were identified via metaGWAS from multiple populations. In situ socketing metal nanoparticles onto perovskite oxides has shown great potential in heterogeneous catalysis, but its employment in boosting ambient CO 2 electroreduction (CER) is unexplored. Here, a CER catalyst of perovskite-socketed sub-3 nm Cu equipped with strong metal-support interactions (SMSIs) is constructed to promote efficient and stable CO 2 -to-C 2+ conversion. For such a catalyst, plentiful sub-3 nm ellipsoid Cu particles are homogeneously and epitaxially anchored on the perovskite backbones, with concomitant creation of significant SMSIs. These SMSIs are able to not only modulate electronic structure of active Cu and facilitate adsorption/activation of key intermediates, but also to strengthen perovskite-Cu adhesion and intensify resistance to structural degradation. Beneficial from these advantageous merits, when evaluated in CER, it performs comparably to or better than most reported Cu-based heteronanostructures. Relative to a physical-mixture counterpart, it features marked improvements (up to 6.2 folds) in activity and selectivity for C 2+ , together with greatly boosted stability (>80 h). PbSe-based thermoelectric materials exhibit promising ZT values at medium temperature, but its near-room-temperature thermoelectric properties are overlooked, thus restricting its average ZT (ZT ave ) value at low-medium temperatures. Here, a high ZT ave of 0.90 at low temperature (300-573 K) is reported in n-type PbSe-based thermoelectric material (Pb 1.02 Se 0.72 Te 0.20 S 0.08 -0.3%Cu), resulting in a large ZT ave of 0.96 at low-medium temperatures (300-773 K). This high thermoelectric performance stems from its ultralow lattice thermal conductivity caused by dense dislocations through heavy Te/S alloying and Cu interstitial doping. The dislocation density evaluated by modified Williamson-Hall method reaches up to 5.4 × 10 16  m -2 in Pb 1.02 Se 0.72 Te 0.20 S 0.08 -0.3%Cu. Moreover, the microstructure observation further uncloses two kinds of dislocations, namely screw and edge dislocations, with several to hundreds of nanometers scale in length. These dislocations in lattice can strongly intensify phonon scattering to minimize the lattice thermal conductivity and simultaneously maintain high carrier transport. As a result, with the reduced lattice thermal conductivity and optimized power factor in Pb 1.02 Se 0.72 Te 0.20 S 0.08 -0.3%Cu, its near-room-temperature thermoelectric performance is largely enhanced and exceeds previous PbSe-based thermoelectric materials., (© 2022. Despite the extraordinary electromechanical properties of relaxor ferroelectrics, correlating their properties to underlying atomic-scale structures remains a decisive challenge for these "mess" systems. Here, taking the lead-free relaxor ferroelectric Bi 0.5 Na 0.5 TiO 3 -based system as an example, we decipher the atomic-scale structure and its relationship to the polar structure evolution and large dynamic electromechanical response, using the direct atomic-scale point-by-point correlation analysis. With judicious chemical modification, we demonstrate the increased defect concentration is the main driving force for deviating polarizations with high-angle walls, leading to the increased random field. Meanwhile, the main driving force for deviating polarizations with low-angle walls changes from the anti-phase oxygen octahedral tilting to the multidirectional A-O displacement, leading to the decreased anisotropy field. Benefiting from the competitive and synergetic equilibrium of anisotropic field versus random field, the facilitated polarization rotation and extension versus facilitated domain switching are identified to be responsible for the giant electromechanical response. Intramuscular fat (IMF) deposition is an important determinant of pork quality and a complex process facilitated by non-coding ceRNAs. In this study, 52 Berkshire × Anqing Sixwhite crossbred pigs were slaughtered to measure eight carcass and pork quality traits. Whole-transcriptome sequencing analysis was performed using longissimus dorsi samples of six low- and high-IMF samples; 34 ceRNA networks, based on 881, 394, 158 differentially expressed (DE) lncRNAs, miRNAs, and mRNAs, were constructed. Following weighted gene co-expression network analysis between the low and high IMF, only one ceRNA, lncRNA4789/miR-381-3p/FABP3 , that showed similar DE trend in longissimus dorsi tissue was retained. Dual-luciferase reporter assays further indicated that FABP3 was a direct, functional target of miR-381-3p , where miR-381-3p overexpression inhibited the mRNA and protein expression of FABP3 . In addition, overexpressed lncRNA4789 attenuated the effect of miR-381-3p on FABP3 by sponging miR-381-3p . Cell function verification experiment demonstrated that miR-381-3p suppressed IMF deposition by inhibiting preadipocyte cell differentiation and lipid droplet deposition via the suppression of FABP3 expression in the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor signalling pathway, whereas lncRNA4789 rescued FABP3 expression by sponging miR-381-3p . Our study may aid in identifying novel molecular markers for its optimization in IMF which is of importance in breeding for improving pork quality.

Cattle have been essential for the development of human civilization since their first domestication few thousand years ago. Since then, they have spread across vast geographic areas following human activities. Throughout generations, the cattle genome has been shaped with detectable signals induced by various evolutionary processes, such as natural and human selection processes and demographic events. Identifying such signals, called selection signatures, is one of the primary goals of population genetics. Previous studies used various selection signature methods and normalized the outputs score using specific windows, in kbp or based on the number of SNPs, to identify the candidate regions. The recent method of iSAFE claimed for high accuracy in pinpointing the candidate SNPs. In this study, we analyzed whole-genome resequencing (WGS) data of ten individuals from Austrian Fleckvieh ( Bos taurus ) and fifty individuals from 14 Chinese indigenous breeds ( Bos taurus, Bos taurus indicus, and admixed). Individual WGS reads were aligned to the cattle reference genome of ARS. UCD1.2 and subsequently undergone single nucleotide variants (SNVs) calling pipeline using GATK. Using these SNVs, we examined the population structure using principal component and admixture analysis. Then we refined selection signature candidates using the iSAFE program and compared it with the classical iHS approach. Additionally, we run Fst population differentiation from these two cattle groups. We found gradual changes of taurine in north China to admixed and indicine to the south. Based on the population structure and the number of individuals, we grouped samples to Fleckvieh, three Chinese taurines (Kazakh, Mongolian, Yanbian), admixed individuals (CHBI&#95;Med), indicine individuals (CHBI&#95;Low), and a combination of admixed and indicine (CHBI) for performing iSAFE and iHS tests. There were more significant SNVs identified using iSAFE than the iHS for the candidate of positive selection and more detectable signals in taurine than in indicine individuals. However, combining admixed and indicine individuals decreased the iSAFE signals. From both within-population tests, significant SNVs are linked to the olfactory receptors, production, reproduction, and temperament traits in taurine cattle, while heat and parasites tolerance in the admixed individuals. Fst test suggests similar patterns of population differentiation between Fleckvieh and three Chinese taurine breeds against CHBI. Genotype by environment (G × E) interaction is fundamental in the biology of complex traits and diseases. However, most of the existing methods for genomic prediction tend to ignore G × E interaction (GEI). In this study, we proposed the genomic prediction method G × EBLUP by considering GEI. Meanwhile, G × EBLUP can also detect the genome-wide single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) subject to GEI. Using comprehensive simulations and analysis of real data from pigs and maize, we showed that G × EBLUP achieved higher efficiency in mapping GEI SNPs and higher prediction accuracy than the existing methods, and its superiority was more obvious when the GEI variance was large. For pig and maize real data, compared with GBLUP, G × EBLUP showed improvement by 3% in the prediction accuracy for backfat thickness, while our findings indicated that the trait of days to 100 kg of pig was not affected by GEI and G × EBLUP did not improve the accuracy of genomic prediction for the trait. A significant advantage was observed for G × EBLUP in maize; the prediction accuracy was improved by ∼5.0 and 7.7% for grain weight and water content, respectively. Furthermore, G × EBLUP was not influenced by the number of environment levels. It could determine a favourable environment using SNP Bayes factors for each environment, implying that it is a robust and useful method for market-specific animal and plant breeding. We proposed G × EBLUP, a novel method for the estimation of genomic breeding value by considering GEI. Genotype imputation from BeadChip to whole-genome sequencing (WGS) data is a cost-effective method of obtaining genotypes of WGS variants. Beagle, one of the most popular imputation software programs, has been widely used for genotype inference in humans and non-human species. A few studies have systematically and comprehensively compared the performance of beagle versions and parameter settings of farm animals. Here, we investigated the imputation performance of three representative versions of Beagle (Beagle 4.1, Beagle 5.0, and Beagle 5.4), and the effective population size (Ne) parameter setting for three species (cattle, pig, and chicken). Six scenarios were investigated to explore the impact of certain key factors on imputation performance. The results showed that the default Ne (1,000,000) is not suitable for livestock and poultry in small reference or low-density arrays of target panels, with 2.47%-10.45% drops in accuracy. Beagle 5 significantly reduced the computation time (4.66-fold-13.24-fold) without an accuracy loss. In addition, using a large combined-reference panel or high-density chip provides greater imputation accuracy, especially for low minor allele frequency (MAF) variants. Fat deposition in pigs is not only closely related to pig production efficiency and pork quality but also an ideal model for human obesity. Transcriptome sequencing is widely used to study fat deposition. However, due to small sample sizes, high false positive rates, and poor consistency of results from different studies, new strategies are urgently needed. Machine learning, a new analysis method, can effectively fit complex data and accurately identify samples and genes. In this study, 36 samples of adipose tissue, muscle tissue, and liver tissue were collected from Songliao black pigs and Landrace pigs, and the mRNA of all the samples was sequenced. In addition, we collected transcriptome data for 64 samples in the GEO database from four different sources. After standardization and imputation of missing values in the data set comprising 100 samples, traditional differential expression analysis was carried out, and different numbers of expressed genes were selected as features for the training model of eight machine learning methods. In the 1000 replications of fourfold cross validation with 100 samples, AdaBoost performed best, with an average prediction accuracy greater than 93% and the highest mean area under the curve in predicting the high- and low-fat content groups among the eight ML methods. According to their performance-based ranks inferred by AdaBoost, 12 genes related to fat deposition were identified; among them, FASN and APOD were specifically expressed in adipose tissue, and APOA1 was specifically expressed in the liver, which could be important candidate biomarkers affecting fat deposition.

Background: Compared to medium-density single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) data, high-density SNP data contain abundant genetic variants and provide more information for the genetic evaluation of livestock, but it has been shown that they do not confer any advantage for genomic prediction and heritability estimation. One possible reason is the uneven distribution of the linkage disequilibrium (LD) along the genome, i.e., LD heterogeneity among regions. The aim of this study was to effectively use genome-wide SNP data for genomic prediction and heritability estimation by using models that control LD heterogeneity among regions., Methods: The LD-adjusted kinship (LDAK) and LD-stratified multicomponent (LDS) models were used to control LD heterogeneity among regions and were compared with the classical model that has no such control. Simulated and real traits of 2000 dairy cattle individuals with imputed high-density (770K) SNP data were used. Five types of phenotypes were simulated, which were controlled by very strongly, strongly, moderately, weakly and very weakly tagged causal variants, respectively. The performances of the models with high- and medium-density (50K) panels were compared to verify that the models that controlled LD heterogeneity among regions were more effective with high-density data., Results: Compared to the medium-density panel, the use of the high-density panel did not improve and even decreased prediction accuracies and heritability estimates from the classical model for both simulated and real traits. Compared to the classical model, LDS effectively improved the accuracy of genomic predictions and unbiasedness of heritability estimates, regardless of the genetic architecture of the trait. LDAK applies only to traits that are mainly controlled by weakly tagged causal variants, but is still less effective than LDS for this type of trait. Compared with the classical model, LDS improved prediction accuracy by about 13% for simulated phenotypes and by 0.3 to ~ 10.7% for real traits with the high-density panel, and by ~ 1% for simulated phenotypes and by - 0.1 to ~ 6.9% for real traits with the medium-density panel., Conclusions: Grouping SNPs based on regional LD to construct the LD-stratified multicomponent model can effectively eliminate the adverse effects of LD heterogeneity among regions, and greatly improve the efficiency of high-density SNP data for genomic prediction and heritability estimation., (© 2022. The size of reference population is an important factor affecting genomic prediction. Thus, combining different populations in genomic prediction is an attractive way to improve prediction ability. However, combining multireference population roughly cannot increase the prediction accuracy as well as expected in pig. This may be due to different linkage disequilibrium (LD) pattern differences between population. In this study, we used the imputed whole-genome sequencing (WGS) data to construct LD-based haplotypes for genomic prediction in combined population to explore the impact of different single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) densities, variant representation (SNPs or haplotype alleles), and reference population size on the prediction accuracy for reproduction traits. Our results showed that genomic best linear unbiased prediction (GBLUP) using the WGS data can improve prediction accuracy in multi-population but not within-population. Not only the genomic prediction accuracy of the haplotype method using 80 K chip data in multi-population but also GBLUP for the multi-population (3.4-5.9%) was higher than that within-population (1.2-4.3%). More importantly, we have found that using the haplotype method based on the WGS data in multi-population has better genomic prediction performance, and our results showed that building haploblock in this scenario based on low LD threshold ( r 2 = 0.2-0.3) produced an optimal set of variables for reproduction traits in Yorkshire pig population. Background: Recently, machine learning (ML) has become attractive in genomic prediction, but its superiority in genomic prediction over conventional (ss) GBLUP methods and the choice of optimal ML methods need to be investigated., Results: In this study, 2566 Chinese Yorkshire pigs with reproduction trait records were genotyped with the GenoBaits Porcine SNP 50 K and PorcineSNP50 panels. Four ML methods, including support vector regression (SVR), kernel ridge regression (KRR), random forest (RF) and Adaboost.R2 were implemented. Through 20 replicates of fivefold cross-validation (CV) and one prediction for younger individuals, the utility of ML methods in genomic prediction was explored. In CV, compared with genomic BLUP (GBLUP), single-step GBLUP (ssGBLUP) and the Bayesian method BayesHE, ML methods significantly outperformed these conventional methods. ML methods improved the genomic prediction accuracy of GBLUP, ssGBLUP, and BayesHE by 19.3%, 15.0% and 20.8%, respectively. In addition, ML methods yielded smaller mean squared error (MSE) and mean absolute error (MAE) in all scenarios. ssGBLUP yielded an improvement of 3.8% on average in accuracy compared to that of GBLUP, and the accuracy of BayesHE was close to that of GBLUP. In genomic prediction of younger individuals, RF and Adaboost.R2&#95;KRR performed better than GBLUP and BayesHE, while ssGBLUP performed comparably with RF, and ssGBLUP yielded slightly higher accuracy and lower MSE than Adaboost.R2&#95;KRR in the prediction of total number of piglets born, while for number of piglets born alive, Adaboost.R2&#95;KRR performed significantly better than ssGBLUP. Among ML methods, Adaboost.R2&#95;KRR consistently performed well in our study. Our findings also demonstrated that optimal hyperparameters are useful for ML methods. After tuning hyperparameters in CV and in predicting genomic outcomes of younger individuals, the average improvement was 14.3% and 21.8% over those using default hyperparameters, respectively., Conclusion: Our findings demonstrated that ML methods had better overall prediction performance than conventional genomic selection methods, and could be new options for genomic prediction. Among ML methods, Adaboost.R2&#95;KRR consistently performed well in our study, and tuning hyperparameters is necessary for ML methods. Hair placode formation is an important stage of hair follicle morphogenesis and it is a complex process facilitated by non-coding RNAs. In this study, we conducted whole transcriptome sequencing analysis of skin, heart, liver, lung, and kidney tissues of day 41 (E41) normal and hairless pig embryos, and respectively detected 15, 8, and 515 skin-specific differentially expressed (DE) lncRNAs, miRNAs, and mRNAs. Furthermore, 18 competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) networks were constructed. Following weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) of stages E39, E41, E45, E52, and E60, between normal and hairless pig embryos, only two ceRNAs (lncRNA2162.1/miR-29a-5p/BMPR1b and lncRNA627.1/miR-29a-5p/EDAR) that showed period-specific differential expression in E41 skin were retained. Dual-luciferase reporter assays further indicated that EDAR was a direct, functioning target of miR-29a-5p and that no binding site was found in BMPR1b. Moreover, miR-29a-5p overexpression inhibited the mRNA and protein expression of EDAR while no significant differential expression of BMPR1b was detected. In addition, over-expressed lncRNA627.1 reduces the expression of miR-29a-5p and increase EDAR expression while inhibits lncRNA627.1 resulted in a opposite expression trend. Cell proliferation result demonstrated that lower expression of EDAR and lncRNA627.1 inhibited hair placode precursor cells (HPPCs) proliferation in a manner similar to that shown by over-expressed miR-29a-5p . This study identified that miR-29a-5p inhibited HPPCs proliferation via the suppression of EDAR expression in the EDA/EDAR signaling pathway, while lncRNA627.1 rescues EDAR expression. Metals with nanocrystalline grains have ultrahigh strengths approaching two gigapascals. However, such extreme grain-boundary strengthening results in the loss of almost all tensile ductility, even when the metal has a face-centred-cubic structure-the most ductile of all crystal structures 1-3 . Here we demonstrate that nanocrystalline nickel-cobalt solid solutions, although still a face-centred-cubic single phase, show tensile strengths of about 2.3 gigapascals with a respectable ductility of about 16 per cent elongation to failure. This unusual combination of tensile strength and ductility is achieved by compositional undulation in a highly concentrated solid solution. The undulation renders the stacking fault energy and the lattice strains spatially varying over length scales in the range of one to ten nanometres, such that the motion of dislocations is thus significantly affected. The motion of dislocations becomes sluggish, promoting their interaction, interlocking and accumulation, despite the severely limited space inside the nanocrystalline grains. As a result, the flow stress is increased, and the dislocation storage is promoted at the same time, which increases the strain hardening and hence the ductility. Meanwhile, the segment detrapping along the dislocation line entails a small activation volume and hence an increased strain-rate sensitivity, which also stabilizes the tensile flow. As such, an undulating landscape resisting dislocation propagation provides a strengthening mechanism that preserves tensile ductility at high flow stresses., (© 2022. Yunnan semi-fine wool sheep are among the most important cultivated sheep breeds in China. However, their population structure, genetic characteristics and traits of interest are poorly studied. In this study, we systematically studied the population characteristics and selection signatures of 40 Yunnan semi-fine wool sheep using SNPs obtained from whole-genome resequencing data. A total of 1393 Gb of clean data were acquired. The mapping rate against the reference genome was 91.23% on average (86.01%-92.26%), and the average sequence depth was 9.51X. After filtering, 28,593,198 SNPs and 4,725,259 indels with high quality were obtained. The heterozygosity rate, inbreeding coefficient and effective population size of the sheep were calculated to preliminarily explore their genetic characteristics. The average heterozygosity rate was 0.264, the average inbreeding coefficient was 0.0099, and the effective population size estimated from the heterozygote excess (HE) was 242.9. Based on the Tajima's D and integrated haplotype score (iHS) approaches, 562 windows and 11,356 core SNPs showed selection signatures in the Yunnan semi-fine wool sheep population. After genome annotation and gene enrichment analysis, we found traces of early domestication in sensory organs, behavioural activity and the nervous system as well as adaptive changes in reproductive and wool traits under selection in this population. Some selected genes related to litter size, including FSHR , BMPR1B and OXT , were identified as being under selection. Specific missense mutations of the FSHR gene that differed from the reference genome were also identified in the population, and we found some SNP variations that may affect litter size. Our findings provide a theoretical basis for the conservation and utilization of Yunnan semi-fine wool sheep.
