We introduce an approach to particle breakage, wherein the particle is modeled as an aggregate of polyhedral cells with their common surfaces governed by the Griffith criterion of fracture. This model is implemented within a discrete element code to simulate and analyze the breakage behavior of a single particle impacting a rigid plane. We find that fracture dynamics involves three distinct regimes as a function of the normalized impact energy ω. At low values of ω, the particle undergoes elastic rebound and no cracks occur inside the particle. In the intermediate range, the particle is damaged by nucleation and propagation of cracks, and the effective restitution coefficient declines without breakup of the particle. Finally, for values of ω beyond a well-defined threshold, the particle breaks into fragments and the restitution coefficient increases with ω due to kinetic energy carried away by the fragments. We show that particle damage, restitution coefficient, and fracture efficiency (the amount of energy input consumed for particle fracture) collapse well as a function of dimensionless scaling parameters. Our data are also sufficiently accurate to scale fragment size and shape distributions. It is found that fragment masses (volumes) follow a power-law distribution with an exponent decreasing with fracture energy. Interestingly, the average elongation and flatness of fragments are very close to those observed in experiments and lunar samples at the optimal fracture efficiency.

Particle-embedded materials consist of a dispersed phase of particles in a sticking matrix. We used a bond-based peridynamics method to investigate their elastic properties, rupture, and probability of failure. We performed an extensive two-dimensional parametric study where particles are disk-shaped inclusions diluted into a pore-filling matrix. Both particle and matrix are considered to be brittle elastic with a perfectly bonded interface. The inclusion volume fraction φ and the inclusion matrix toughness ratio β (β≥1) were varied from 0.254-0.754 (jamming point) and 1.5-100.0, respectively. A total of 5000 uniaxial tensile tests up to failure were performed. We showed that the Halpin-Tsai model fits well all Young elastic moduli even for nearly in-contact particles. The stress distribution strongly depends on φ and β. As the highest stresses (at the origin of crack nucleation) occur between neighboring particles, we analyzed the average stress in gaps. We found that, regardless of the particle volume fraction, the yield stress is a power law of a grain-scaled stress concentration factor. We also investigated the probability of failure of the samples. We found that whatever φ and β, this probability follows a classical Weibull law. Finally, we showed that Weibull modulus, normalized by its value for infinitely rigid particles, is inversely proportional to a function of the stress concentration factor.

We use the bond-based peridynamics approach to analyze the strength and fracture of dense granular aggregates with variable amount of a solid binding matrix, distributed according to a simple protocol in the interstitial space between particles. We show the versatility of the peridynamics approach in application to crack propagation and its scaling behavior in a homogeneous medium (in the absence of particles and pores). Then we apply this method to simulate the deformation and failure of aggregates as a function of the amount of the binding matrix under tensile loading. We find that the tensile strength is a strongly nonlinear function of the matrix volume fraction. It first increases slowly and levels off as the gap space in-between touching particles is gradually filled by the binding matrix, up to nearly 90% of the total pore volume, and then a rapid increase occurs to the maximum strength as the remaining interstitial space, composed of isolated pores between four or more particles, is filled. By analyzing the probability density functions of stresses in the particle and matrix phases, we show that the adhesion of the matrix to the particles and the thickening of stress chains (i.e., stresses distributed over larger cross sections) control the strength in the first case whereas the homogenizing effect of the matrix by filling the pores (hence reducing stress concentration) is at the origin of further increase of the strength in the second case. Interestingly, these two mechanisms contribute almost equally to the total strength.

We perform systematic particle dynamics simulations of granular flows composed of breakable particles in a 2D rotating drum to investigate the evolution of the mean particle size and specific surface as a function of system parameters such as drum size, rotation speed, filling degree, and particle shape and size. The specific surface increases at a nearly constant rate up to a point where particle breakage begins to slow down. The rates of particle breakage for all values of system parameters are found to collapse on a master curve when the times are scaled by the characteristic time defined in the linear regime. We determine the characteristic time as a function of all system parameters, and we show that the rate of particle breakage can be expressed as a linear function of a general scaling parameter that incorporates all our system parameters. This scaling behavior provides a general framework for the upscaling of drum grinding process from laboratory to industrial scale.

Granular flows are omnipresent in nature and industrial processes, but their rheological properties such as apparent friction and packing fraction are still elusive when inertial, cohesive and viscous interactions occur between particles in addition to frictional and elastic forces. Here we report on extensive particle dynamics simulations of such complex flows for a model granular system composed of perfectly rigid particles. We show that, when the apparent friction and packing fraction are normalized by their cohesion-dependent quasistatic values, they are governed by a single dimensionless number that, by virtue of stress additivity, accounts for all interactions. We also find that this dimensionless parameter, as a generalized inertial number, describes the texture variables such as the bond network connectivity and anisotropy. Encompassing various stress sources, this unified framework considerably simplifies and extends the modeling scope for granular dynamics, with potential applications to powder technology and natural flows.

We use particle dynamics simulations to investigate the evolution of a wet agglomerate inside homogeneous shear flows of dry particles. The agglomerate is modeled by introducing approximate analytical expressions of capillary and viscous forces between particles in addition to frictional contacts. During shear flow, the agglomerate may elongate, break, or be eroded by loss of its capillary bonds and primary particles. By systematically varying the shear rate and surface tension of the binding liquid, we characterize the rates of these dispersion modes. All the rates increase with increasing inertial number of the flow and decreasing cohesion index of the agglomerate. We show that the data points for each mode collapse on a master curve for a dimensionless scaling parameter that combines the inertial number and the cohesion index. The erosion rate vanishes below a cutoff value of the scaling parameter. This leads to a power-law borderline between the vanishing erosion states and erosion states in the phase space defined by the inertial number and the cohesion index.

The use of lignocellulosic plant biomass as an alternative to fossil feedstocks for chemistry, energy and materials often involves an intense dry comminution step, for which the energy consumed can vary significantly according to the process parameters, the particle size targeted, and the properties of the biomass. Here we studied the fine milling of maritime pine bark in an impact-mill configuration and in an attrition-mill configuration. The properties of the resulting powders (particle size distribution, particle shape, specific surface area, agglomeration level) obtained in each configuration were compared in relation to process energy consumption. Results evidenced that the agglomeration phenomena drive milling efficiency and limit the possibilities for reaching ultrafine particles. Interestingly, impact loading proved more effective at breaking down coarse particles but tended to generate high agglomeration levels, whereas attrition milling led to less agglomeration and thus to finer particles.

In order to get insight into the wet agglomeration process, we numerically investigate the growth of a single granule inside a dense flow of an initially homogeneous distribution of wet and dry particles. The simulations are performed by means of the discrete element method and the binding liquid is assumed to be transported by the wet particles, which interact via capillary and viscous force laws. The granule size is found to be an exponential function of time, reflecting the conservation of the amount of liquid and the decrease of the number of available wet particles inside the flow during agglomeration. We analyze this behavior in terms of the accretion and erosion rates of wet particles for a range of different values of material parameters such as mean particle size, size polydispersity, friction coefficient and liquid viscosity. In particular, we propose a phase diagram of the granule growth as a function of the mean primary particle diameter and particle size span, which separates the parametric domain in which the granule grows from the domain in which the granule does not survive.

Roots provide basic functions to plants such as water and nutrient uptake and anchoring in soil. The growth and development of root systems contribute to colonizing the surrounding soil and optimizing the access to resources. It is generally known that the variability of plant root architecture results from the combination of genetic, physiological, and environmental factors, in particular soil mechanical resistance. However, this last factor has never been investigated at the soil grain scale for roots. In this paper, we are interested in the effect of the disordered texture of granular soils on the evolution of forces experienced by the root cap during its growth. We introduce a numerical model in which the root is modeled as a flexible self-elongating tube that probes a soil composed of solid particles. By means of extensive simulations, we show that the forces exerted on the root cap reflect interparticle force chains. Our simulations also show that the mean force declines exponentially with root flexibility, the highest force corresponding to the soil hardness. Furthermore, we find that this functional dependence is characterized by a single dimensionless parameter that combines granular structure and root bending stiffness. This finding will be useful to further address the biological issues of mechanosensing and thigmomorphogenesis in plant roots.

We present here a numerical study dedicated to the fluidization of a submerged granular medium induced by a localized fluid injection. To this end, a two-dimensional (2D) model is used, coupling the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) with the discrete element method (DEM) for a relevant description of fluid-grains interaction. An extensive investigation has been carried out to analyze the respective influences of the different parameters of our configuration, both geometrical (bed height, grain diameter, injection width) and physical (fluid viscosity, buoyancy). Compared to previous experimental works, the same qualitative features are recovered as regards the general phenomenology including transitory phase, stationary states, and hysteretic behavior. We also present quantitative findings about transient fluidization, for which several dimensionless quantities and scaling laws are proposed, and about the influence of the injection width, from localized to homogeneous fluidization. Finally, the impact of the present 2D geometry is discussed, by comparison to the real three-dimensional (3D) experiments, as well as the crucial role of the prevailing hydrodynamic regime within the expanding cavity, quantified through a cavity Reynolds number, that can presumably explain some substantial differences observed regarding upward expansion process of the fluidized zone when the fluid viscosity is changed.

The atomic force microscope tip was used to progressively abrade the surface of non-cut starch granules embedded in the endosperm protein matrix in grain sections from wheat near-isogenic lines differing in the puroindoline b gene and thus, hardness. In the hard near-isogenic wheat lines, starch granules exhibited two distinct profiles corresponding either to abrasion in the surrounding protein layer or the starch granule. An additional profile, only identified in soft lines, revealed a marked stop in the abrasion at the protein-starch transition similar to a lipid interface playing a lubricant role. It was related to the presence of both wild-type puroindolines, already suggested to act at the starch-protein interface through their association with polar lipids. This study revealed, for the first time, in situ differences in the nano-mechanical properties at the starch-protein interface in the endosperm of wheat grains depending on the puroindoline allelic status., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. We investigate by means of Contact Dynamics simulations the transient dynamics of a 2D granular pile set into motion by applying shear velocity during a short time interval to all particles. The spreading dynamics is directly controlled by the input energy whereas in recent studies of column collapse the dynamics scales with the initial potential energy of the column. As in column collapse, we observe a power-law dependence of the runout distance with respect to the input energy with nontrivial exponents. This suggests that the power-law behavior is a generic feature of granular dynamics, and the values of the exponents reflect the distribution of kinetic energy inside the material. We observe two regimes with different values of the exponents: the low-energy regime reflects the destabilization of the pile by the impact with a runout time independent of the input energy whereas the high-energy regime is governed by the input energy. We show that the evolution of the pile in the high-energy regime can be described by a characteristic decay time and the available energy after the pile is destabilized.

By means of coupled molecular dynamics-computational fluid dynamics simulations, we analyze the initiation of avalanches in a granular bed of spherical particles immersed in a viscous fluid and inclined above its angle of repose. In quantitative agreement with experiments, we find that the bed is unstable for a packing fraction below 0.59 but is stabilized above this packing fraction by negative excess pore pressure induced by the effect of dilatancy. From detailed numerical data, we explore the time evolution of shear strain, packing fraction, excess pore pressures, and granular microstructure in this creeplike pressure redistribution regime, and we show that they scale excellently with a characteristic time extracted from a model based on the balance of granular stresses in the presence of a negative excess pressure and its interplay with dilatancy. The cumulative shear strain at failure is found to be ≃ 0.2, in close agreement with the experiments, irrespective of the initial packing fraction and inclination angle. Remarkably, the avalanche is triggered when dilatancy vanishes instantly as a result of fluctuations while the average dilatancy is still positive (expanding bed) with a packing fraction that declines with the initial packing fraction. Another nontrivial feature of this creeplike regime is that, in contrast to dry granular materials, the internal friction angle of the bed at failure is independent of dilatancy but depends on the inclination angle, leading therefore to a nonlinear dependence of the excess pore pressure on the inclination angle. We show that this behavior may be described in terms of the contact network anisotropy, which increases with a nearly constant connectivity and levels off at a value (critical state) that increases with the inclination angle. These features suggest that the behavior of immersed granular materials is controlled not only directly by hydrodynamic forces acting on the particles but also by the influence of the fluid on the granular microstructure.

We use three-dimensional contact dynamics simulations to analyze the rheological properties of granular materials composed of rigid aggregates. The aggregates are made from four overlapping spheres and described by a nonconvexity parameter depending on the relative positions of the spheres. The macroscopic and microstructural properties of several sheared packings are analyzed as a function of the degree of nonconvexity of the aggregates. We find that the internal angle of friction increases with the nonconvexity. In contrast, the packing fraction first increases to a maximum value but declines as the nonconvexity increases further. At a high level of nonconvexity, the packings are looser but show a higher shear strength. At the microscopic scale, the fabric and force anisotropy, as well as the friction mobilization, are enhanced by multiple contacts between aggregates and interlocking, thus revealings the mechanical and geometrical origins of shear strength.

The macroscopic cohesion of granular materials made up of sticky particles depends on the particle shapes. We address this issue by performing contact dynamics simulations of 2D packings of nonconvex aggregates. We find that the macroscopic cohesion is strongly dependent on the strain and stress inhomogeneities developing inside the material. The largest cohesion is obtained for nearly homogeneous deformation at the beginning of unconfined axial compression and it evolves linearly with nonconvexity. Interestingly, the aggregates in a sheared packing tend to form more contacts with fewer neighboring aggregates as the degree of nonconvexity increases. We also find that shearing leads either to an isotropic distribution of tensile contacts or to the same privileged direction as that of compressive contacts.

We rely on the lattice element method to simulate and analyze the stress fields at subparticle scales in two-dimensional granular solids composed of particles of variable stiffness together with an interstitial matrix of variable volume fraction. We find that the contact force distributions as approached from the subscale stresses are similar to those obtained from a particle-scale discrete element approach. This means that the well-known properties of force distributions in model granular media, with hard particles and without an interstitial phase, can be extended to materials such as concrete and sandstone involving a jammed particle phase. Interestingly, the stress distributions are exponential at the contact zones and they are mainly guided by the particle phase in compression and by the matrix in tension. We also show that the distributions are increasingly broader for a decreasing matrix volume fraction in tension whereas in compression they depend only on the particle stiffness.
