Lattice dynamics measurements are often crucial tools for understanding how materials transform between different structures. We report time-resolved x-ray scattering-based measurements of the nonequilibrium lattice dynamics in SnSe, a monochalcogenide reported to host a novel photoinduced lattice instability. By fitting interatomic force models to the fluence dependent excited-state dispersion, we determine the nonthermal origin of the lattice instability to be dominated by changes of interatomic interactions along a bilayer-connecting bond, rather than of an intralayer bonding network that is of primary importance to the lattice instability in thermal equilibrium.

Ultralow thermal conductivity and fast ionic diffusion endow superionic materials with excellent performance both as thermoelectric converters and as solid-state electrolytes. Yet the correlation and interdependence between these two features remain unclear owing to a limited understanding of their complex atomic dynamics. Here we investigate ionic diffusion and lattice dynamics in argyrodite Ag 8 SnSe 6 using synchrotron X-ray and neutron scattering techniques along with machine-learned molecular dynamics. We identify a critical interplay of the vibrational dynamics of mobile Ag and a host framework that controls the overdamping of low-energy Ag-dominated phonons into a quasi-elastic response, enabling superionicity. Concomitantly, the persistence of long-wavelength transverse acoustic phonons across the superionic transition challenges a proposed 'liquid-like thermal conduction' picture. Rather, a striking thermal broadening of low-energy phonons, starting even below 50 K, reveals extreme phonon anharmonicity and weak bonding as underlying features of the potential energy surface responsible for the ultralow thermal conductivity (<0.5 W m -1  K -1 ) and fast diffusion. Spin and lattice are two fundamental degrees of freedom in a solid, and their fluctuations about the equilibrium values in a magnetic ordered crystalline lattice form quasiparticles termed magnons (spin waves) and phonons (lattice waves), respectively. In most materials with strong spin-lattice coupling (SLC), the interaction of spin and lattice induces energy gaps in the spin wave dispersion at the nominal intersections of magnon and phonon modes. Here we use neutron scattering to show that in the two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals honeycomb lattice ferromagnetic CrGeTe 3 , spin waves propagating within the 2D plane exhibit an anomalous dispersion, damping, and breakdown of quasiparticle conservation, while magnons along the c axis behave as expected for a local moment ferromagnet. These results indicate the presence of dynamical SLC arising from the zero-temperature quantum fluctuations in CrGeTe 3 , suggesting that the observed in-plane spin waves are mixed spin and lattice quasiparticles fundamentally different from pure magnons and phonons., (© 2022. Superionic conductors possess liquid-like ionic diffusivity in the solid state, finding wide applicability from electrolytes in energy storage to materials for thermoelectric energy conversion. Type I superionic conductors (for example, AgI, Ag 2 Se and so on) are defined by a first-order transition to the superionic state and have so far been found exclusively in three-dimensional crystal structures. Here, we reveal a two-dimensional type I superionic conductor, α-KAg 3 Se 2 , by scattering techniques and complementary simulations. Quasi-elastic neutron scattering and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations confirm that the superionic Ag + ions are confined to subnanometre sheets, with the simulated local structure validated by experimental X-ray powder pair-distribution-function analysis. Finally, we demonstrate that the phase transition temperature can be controlled by chemical substitution of the alkali metal ions that compose the immobile charge-balancing layers. Our work thus extends the known classes of superionic conductors and will facilitate the design of new materials with tailored ionic conductivities and phase transitions., (© 2021. The candidate thermoelectric compounds Mg 3 Sb 2 and Mg 3 Bi 2 show excellent performance near ambient temperature, enabled by an anomalously low lattice thermal conductivity (κ l ) comparable to those of much heavier PbTe or Bi 2 Te 3 Contrary to common mass-trend expectations, replacing Mg with heavier Ca or Yb yields a threefold increase in κ l in CaMg 2 Sb 2 and YbMg 2 Bi 2 Here, we report a comprehensive analysis of phonons in the series A Mg 2 X 2 ( A = Mg, Ca, and Yb; X = Bi and Sb) based on inelastic neutron/x-ray scattering and first-principles simulations and show that the anomalously low κ l of Mg 3 X 2 has inherent phononic origins. We uncover a large phonon softening and flattening of low-energy transverse acoustic phonons in Mg 3 X 2 compared to the ternary analogs and traced to a specific Mg- X bond, which markedly enlarges the scattering phase-space, enabling the threefold tuning in κ l These results provide key insights for manipulating phonon scattering without the traditional reliance on heavy elements., (Copyright © 2021 The Authors, some rights reserved; exclusive licensee American Association for the Advancement of Science. AgSbSe 2 is a typical member of cubic I-V-VI 2 semiconductors, which are known for their extremely low lattice thermal conductivity (κ l ). However, the low electrical conductivity of AgSbSe 2 , below ∼10 S cm -1 at room temperature, has hindered its thermoelectric performance. In this work, single-phase AgSbSe 2 bulk samples with much higher electrical conductivity were synthesized via self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) combined with spark plasma sintering (SPS) for the first time. Pb doping through the nonequilibrium process further increases the electrical conductivity to >100 S cm -1 . Furthermore, continuously increased effective mass m d * can be achieved upon Pb doping because of the multiple degenerate valence bands of AgSbSe 2 and the energy-filtering effect induced by in situ -formed nanodots. The simultaneous enhancement of both the electrical conductivity and Seebeck coefficient contributes to an unprecedentedly high average power factor of 6.75 μW cm -1 K -2 . Meanwhile, the introduced dense grain boundaries and point defects enhance the phonon scattering and consequently suppress κ l , yielding a high ZT value of 1.2 at 723 K in AgSb 0.94 Pb 0.06 Se 2 . This study opens a new avenue for rapid, low-cost, large-scale production of AgSbSe 2 -based materials and demonstrates that Pb-doped AgSbSe 2 prepared via the SHS-SPS method is a promising candidate for thermoelectric applications.

Pronounced anomalies in the SrTiO&#95;{3} dynamical structure factor, S(Q,E), including the disappearance of acoustic phonon branches at low temperatures, were uncovered with inelastic neutron scattering (INS) and simulations. The striking effect reflects anharmonic couplings between acoustic and optic phonons and the incipient ferroelectric instability near the quantum critical point. It is rationalized using a first-principles renormalized anharmonic phonon approach, pointing to nonlinear Ti-O hybridization causing unusual changes in real-space phonon eigenvectors, frequencies, group velocities, and scattering phase space. Our method is general and establishes how T dependences beyond the harmonic regime, assessed by INS mapping of large reciprocal-space volumes, provide real-space insights into anharmonic atomic dynamics near phase transitions.

Intrinsically low lattice thermal conductivity ([Formula: see text]) in superionic conductors is of great interest for energy conversion applications in thermoelectrics. Yet, the complex atomic dynamics leading to superionicity and ultralow thermal conductivity remain poorly understood. Here, we report a comprehensive study of the lattice dynamics and superionic diffusion in [Formula: see text] from energy- and momentum-resolved neutron and X-ray scattering techniques, combined with first-principles calculations. Our results settle unresolved questions about the lattice dynamics and thermal conduction mechanism in [Formula: see text] We find that the heat-carrying long-wavelength transverse acoustic (TA) phonons coexist with the ultrafast diffusion of Ag ions in the superionic phase, while the short-wavelength nondispersive TA phonons break down. Strong scattering of phonon quasiparticles by anharmonicity and Ag disorder are the origin of intrinsically low [Formula: see text] The breakdown of short-wavelength TA phonons is directly related to the Ag diffusion, with the vibrational spectral weight associated to Ag oscillations evolving into stochastic decaying fluctuations. Furthermore, the origin of fast ionic diffusion is shown to arise from extended flat basins in the energy landscape and collective hopping behavior facilitated by strong repulsion between Ag ions. Many ultrafast solid phase transitions are treated as chemical reactions that transform the structures between two different unit cells along a reaction coordinate, but this neglects the role of disorder. Although ultrafast diffraction provides insights into atomic dynamics during such transformations, diffraction alone probes an averaged unit cell and is less sensitive to randomness in the transition pathway. Using total scattering of femtosecond x-ray pulses, we show that atomic disordering in photoexcited vanadium dioxide (VO 2 ) is central to the transition mechanism and that, after photoexcitation, the system explores a large volume of phase space on a time scale comparable to that of a single phonon oscillation. Recent work on superionic conductors has demonstrated the influence of lattice dynamics and the softness of the lattice on ionic transport. When examining either the changes in the acoustic phonon spectrum or the whole phonon density of states, both a decreasing activation barrier of migration and a decreasing entropy of migration have been observed, highlighting that the paradigm of "the softer the lattice, the better" does not always hold true. However, both approaches to monitor the changing lattice dynamics probe different frequency ranges of the phonon spectrum, and thus, it is unclear if they are complementary. In this work, we investigate the lattice dynamics of the superionic conductor Na 3 PS 4- x Se x by probing the optical phonon modes and the acoustic phonon modes, as well as the phonon density of states via inelastic neutron scattering. Notably, Raman spectroscopy shows the evolution of multiple local symmetry reduced polyhedral species, which likely affect the local diffusion pathways. Meanwhile, density functional theory and the ionic transport data are used to compare the different approaches for assessing the lattice dynamics. This work shows that, while acoustic and inelastic methods may be used to experimentally assess the overall changing lattice stiffness, calculations of the average vibrational energies between the mobile ions and the anion framework are important to assess and computationally screen for ionic conductors.

The low temperature magnetic behaviour of the multiferroic quadruple perovskite CaMn 7 O 12 is investigated. The magneto-caloric effect in this material is presented for the first time. Along with the established magnetic transitions, T N1 ~ 90 K and T N2 ~ 45 K, an anomaly at 20 K is observed in our dc magnetization, ac susceptibility and dielectric measurements; below which, an inverse magnetocaloric effect is also observed in our  -ΔS M (T) plots. The neutron scattering measurements show minimal change between 10 K and 30 K in static correlations, but a clear change in energy and linewidth of the magnetic excitations is evident. The results suggest that only dynamic correlations change across T M ~ 20 K. The existence of multiple magnetic interactions below 45 K, with significant coupling between them, is demonstrated using an Arrott plot analysis of our magnetic data. Compatible conclusions are drawn from magnetocaloric plots. The peak change in isothermal magnetic entropy (-ΔS M ) is 1.3 JK -1 kg -1 and the value of refrigeration capacity in CaMn 7 O 12 is 34.5 J · kg -1 at 7 T.

Magnetoelectrics offer tantalizing opportunities for devices coupling ferroelectricity and magnetism but remain difficult to realize. Breakthrough strategies could circumvent the mutually exclusive origins of magnetism and ferroelectricity by exploiting the interaction of multiple phonon modes in geometric improper and hybrid improper ferroelectrics. Yet, the proposed instability of a zone-boundary phonon mode, driving the emergence of ferroelectricity via coupling to a polar mode, remains to be directly observed. Here, we provide previously missing evidence for this scenario in the archetypal improper ferroelectric, yttrium manganite, through comprehensive scattering measurements of the atomic structure and phonons, supported with first-principles simulations. Our experiments and theoretical modeling resolve the origin of the unusual temperature dependence of the polarization and rule out a reported double-step ferroelectric transition. These results emphasize the critical role of phonon anharmonicity in rationalizing lattice instabilities in improper ferroelectrics and show that including these effects in simulations could facilitate the design of magnetoelectrics.

In electrically conductive solids, the Wiedemann-Franz law requires the electronic contribution to thermal conductivity to be proportional to electrical conductivity. Violations of the Wiedemann-Franz law are typically an indication of unconventional quasiparticle dynamics, such as inelastic scattering, or hydrodynamic collective motion of charge carriers, typically pronounced only at cryogenic temperatures. We report an order-of-magnitude breakdown of the Wiedemann-Franz law at high temperatures ranging from 240 to 340 kelvin in metallic vanadium dioxide in the vicinity of its metal-insulator transition. Different from previously established mechanisms, the unusually low electronic thermal conductivity is a signature of the absence of quasiparticles in a strongly correlated electron fluid where heat and charge diffuse independently., (Copyright © 2017, American Association for the Advancement of Science.)

We present a framework to use high performance computing to determine accurate solutions to the inverse optimization problem of big experimental data against computational models. We demonstrate how image processing, mathematical regularization, and hierarchical modeling can be used to solve complex optimization problems on big data. We also demonstrate how both model and data information can be used to further increase solution accuracy of optimization by providing confidence regions for the processing and regularization algorithms. We use the framework in conjunction with the software package SIMPHONIES to analyze results from neutron scattering experiments on silicon single crystals, and refine first principles calculations to better describe the experimental data.

Based on thermodynamic principles, we derive expressions quantifying the non-harmonic vibrational behavior of materials, which are rigorous yet easily evaluated from experimentally available data for the thermal expansion coefficient and the phonon density of states. These experimentally-derived quantities are valuable to benchmark first-principles theoretical predictions of harmonic and non-harmonic thermal behaviors using perturbation theory, ab initio molecular-dynamics, or Monte-Carlo simulations. We illustrate this analysis by computing the harmonic, dilational, and anharmonic contributions to the entropy, internal energy, and free energy of elemental aluminum and the ordered compound [Formula: see text] over a wide range of temperature. Results agree well with previous data in the literature and provide an efficient approach to estimate anharmonic effects in materials.

A variety of crystals contain quasi-one-dimensional substructures, which yield distinctive electronic, spintronic, optical and thermoelectric properties. There is a lack of understanding of the lattice dynamics that influences the properties of such complex crystals. Here we employ inelastic neutron scatting measurements and density functional theory calculations to show that numerous low-energy optical vibrational modes exist in higher manganese silicides, an example of such crystals. These optical modes, including unusually low-frequency twisting motions of the Si ladders inside the Mn chimneys, provide a large phase space for scattering acoustic phonons. A hybrid phonon and diffuson model is proposed to explain the low and anisotropic thermal conductivity of higher manganese silicides and to evaluate nanostructuring as an approach to further suppress the thermal conductivity and enhance the thermoelectric energy conversion efficiency. This discovery offers new insights into the structure-property relationships of a broad class of materials with quasi-one-dimensional substructures for various applications.

Phase competition underlies many remarkable and technologically important phenomena in transition metal oxides. Vanadium dioxide (VO2) exhibits a first-order metal-insulator transition (MIT) near room temperature, where conductivity is suppressed and the lattice changes from tetragonal to monoclinic on cooling. Ongoing attempts to explain this coupled structural and electronic transition begin with two alternative starting points: a Peierls MIT driven by instabilities in electron-lattice dynamics and a Mott MIT where strong electron-electron correlations drive charge localization. A key missing piece of the VO2 puzzle is the role of lattice vibrations. Moreover, a comprehensive thermodynamic treatment must integrate both entropic and energetic aspects of the transition. Here we report that the entropy driving the MIT in VO2 is dominated by strongly anharmonic phonons rather than electronic contributions, and provide a direct determination of phonon dispersions. Our ab initio calculations identify softer bonding in the tetragonal phase, relative to the monoclinic phase, as the origin of the large vibrational entropy stabilizing the metallic rutile phase. They further reveal how a balance between higher entropy in the metal and orbital-driven lower energy in the insulator fully describes the thermodynamic forces controlling the MIT. Our study illustrates the critical role of anharmonic lattice dynamics in metal oxide phase competition, and provides guidance for the predictive design of new materials.
