In this work, an analytical approach was developed for Pb, Sr, and Fe isotopic analysis of archaeological samples recovered from an iron work site by using multi-collector inductively coupled plasma - mass spectrometry (MC-ICP-MS). The sample types include slag, coal, clay and hammer scales, all obtained from an archaeological site at Hoeke (Belgium). Despite the wide concentration range of the target elements present in the samples and some sample manipulations necessarily performed outside of a clean laboratory facility, the analytical procedure yielded accurate and precise results for QA/QC standards while blank levels were negligible. Preliminary results concerning Pb, Sr and Fe isotope ratio variations in archaeological materials associated with iron working processes are provided. The samples revealed high variability in metal isotopic compositions, with the 208 Pb/ 207 Pb ratio ranging from 2.4261 to 2.4824, the 87 Sr/ 86 Sr ratio from 0.7100 to 0.7220, and δ 56 Fe values from -0.34 to +0.08‰, which was tentatively attributed to the mixing of materials during the iron production process or variability within the source material. Also, contamination introduced by coal and furnace/hearth lining material could have contributed to the wide range of isotopic compositions observed. Because of the absence of information and data for primary ore samples to compare with, the provenance of the materials could not be established. The present study highlights the challenges in interpreting archaeological data, particularly in terms of the isotopic variability observed. It underscores the necessity of integrating analysis data with historical and archaeological knowledge. Studies of past human-landscape interactions rely upon the integration of archaeological, biological and geological information within their geographical context. However, detecting the often ephemeral traces of human activities at a landscape scale remains difficult with conventional archaeological field survey. Geophysical methods offer a solution by bridging the gap between point finds and the surrounding landscape, but these surveys often solely target archaeological features. Here we show how simultaneous mapping of multiple physical soil properties with a high resolution multi-receiver electromagnetic induction (EMI) survey permits a reconstruction of the three-dimensional layout and pedological setting of a medieval reclaimed landscape in Flanders (Belgium). Combined with limited and directed excavations, the results offer a unique insight into the way such marginal landscapes were reclaimed and occupied during the Middle Ages. This approach provides a robust foundation for unravelling complex historical landscapes and will enhance our understanding of past human-landscape interactions.

Background: The aim of electroencephalogram (EEG) source localization is to find the brain areas responsible for EEG waves of interest. It consists of solving forward and inverse problems. The forward problem is solved by starting from a given electrical source and calculating the potentials at the electrodes. These evaluations are necessary to solve the inverse problem which is defined as finding brain sources which are responsible for the measured potentials at the EEG electrodes., Methods: While other reviews give an extensive summary of the both forward and inverse problem, this review article focuses on different aspects of solving the forward problem and it is intended for newcomers in this research field., Results: It starts with focusing on the generators of the EEG: the post-synaptic potentials in the apical dendrites of pyramidal neurons. These cells generate an extracellular current which can be modeled by Poisson's differential equation, and Neumann and Dirichlet boundary conditions. The compartments in which these currents flow can be anisotropic (e.g. skull and white matter). In a three-shell spherical head model an analytical expression exists to solve the forward problem. During the last two decades researchers have tried to solve Poisson's equation in a realistically shaped head model obtained from 3D medical images, which requires numerical methods. The following methods are compared with each other: the boundary element method (BEM), the finite element method (FEM) and the finite difference method (FDM). In the last two methods anisotropic conducting compartments can conveniently be introduced. Then the focus will be set on the use of reciprocity in EEG source localization. It is introduced to speed up the forward calculations which are here performed for each electrode position rather than for each dipole position. Solving Poisson's equation utilizing FEM and FDM corresponds to solving a large sparse linear system. Iterative methods are required to solve these sparse linear systems. The following iterative methods are discussed: successive over-relaxation, conjugate gradients method and algebraic multigrid method., Conclusion: Solving the forward problem has been well documented in the past decades. In the past simplified spherical head models are used, whereas nowadays a combination of imaging modalities are used to accurately describe the geometry of the head model. Efforts have been done on realistically describing the shape of the head model, as well as the heterogenity of the tissue types and realistically determining the conductivity. However, the determination and validation of the in vivo conductivity values is still an important topic in this field. In addition, more studies have to be done on the influence of all the parameters of the head model and of the numerical techniques on the solution of the forward problem.

Purpose: To investigate the potential clinical relevance of a new algorithm to remove muscle artifacts in ictal scalp EEG., Methods: Thirty-seven patients with refractory partial epilepsy with a well-defined seizure onset zone based on full presurgical evaluation, including SISCOM but excluding ictal EEG findings, were included. One ictal EEG of each patient was presented to a clinical neurophysiologist who was blinded to all other data. Ictal EEGs were first rated after band-pass filtering, then after elimination of muscle artifacts using a blind source separation-canonical correlation analysis technique (BSS-CCA). Degree of muscle artifact contamination, lateralization, localization, time and pattern of ictal EEG onset were compared between the two readings and validated against the other localizing information., Results: Muscle artifacts contaminated 97% of ictal EEGs, and interfered with the interpretation in 76%, more often in extratemporal than temporal lobe seizures. BSS-CCA significantly improved the sensitivity to localize the seizure onset from 62% to 81%, and performed best in ictal EEGs with moderate to severe muscle artifact contamination. In a significant number of the contaminated EEGs, BSS-CCA also led to an earlier identification of ictal EEG changes, and recognition of ictal EEG patterns that were hidden by muscle artifact., Conclusions: Muscle artifacts interfered with the interpretation in a majority of ictal EEGs. BSS-CCA reliably removed these muscle artifacts in a user-friendly manner. BSS-CCA may have an important place in the interpretation of ictal EEGs during presurgical evaluation of patients with refractory partial epilepsy.

The electroencephalogram (EEG) is often contaminated by muscle artifacts. In this paper, a new method for muscle artifact removal in EEG is presented, based on canonical correlation analysis (CCA) as a blind source separation (BSS) technique. This method is demonstrated on a synthetic data set. The method outperformed a low-pass filter with different cutoff frequencies and an independent component analysis (ICA)-based technique for muscle artifact removal. In addition, the method is applied on a real ictal EEG recording contaminated with muscle artifacts. The proposed method removed successfully the muscle artifact without altering the recorded underlying ictal activity.

Accurate analysis of EEG sleep spindle frequency is challenging. The frequency content of true sleep spindles is not known. Therefore, simulated spindle activity was studied in the present work. Five types of simulated test signals were designed, all containing a dominant spindle represented by a 13-Hz sine wave as such or with a waxing and waning pattern accompanied by a secondary spindle activity in three test signals. Background EEG was included in four test signals, modeled either as small additional sinusoids across the spindle frequency range or as filtered Gaussian noise segments. The purpose of this study was to investigate how accurately the dominant spindle frequency of 13 Hz could be resolved with different methods in the presence of the interfering waveforms. A matching pursuit (MP) based approach, discrete Fourier transform (DFT) with Hanning windowing with and without zero padding, Hankel total least squares (HTLS) and wavelet methods were compared in the analyses. MP method provided best overall performance, followed closely by DFT with zero padding. Comparative studies like this are important to decide the method of choice in clinical sleep EEG analysis.

Muscle and eye movement artifacts are very prominent in the ictal EEG of patients suffering from epilepsy, thus making the dipole localization of ictal activity very unreliable. Recently, two techniques (BSS-CCA and pSVD) were developed to remove those artifacts. The purpose of this study is to assess whether the removal of muscle and eye movement artifacts improves the EEG dipole source localization. We used a total of 8 EEG fragments, each from another patient, first unfiltered, then filtered by the BSS-CCA and pSVD. In both the filtered and unfiltered EEG fragments we estimated multiple dipoles using RAP-MUSIC. The resulting dipoles were subjected to a K-means clustering algorithm, to extract the most prominent cluster. We found that the removal of muscle and eye artifact results to tighter and more clear dipole clusters. Furthermore, we found that localization of the filtered EEG corresponded with the localization derived from the ictal SPECT in 7 of the 8 patients. Therefore, we can conclude that the BSS-CCA and pSVD improve localization of ictal activity, thus making the localization more reliable for the presurgical evaluation of the patient.

We applied for this purpose a recently developed subspace-based method for modeling the common dynamics in multichannel signals. When the epileptiform activity is common in the majority of channels and the artifacts appear only in a few channels the proposed method can be used to remove the latter. The performance of the method was tested on simulated data for different noise levels. For high noise levels the method was still able to identify the common dynamics. In addition, the method was applied to real life EEG recordings containing interictal and ictal activity contaminated with muscle artifact. The muscle artifacts were removed successfully. For both the synthetic data and the analyzed real life data the results were compared with the results obtained with principal component analysis (PCA). In both cases, the proposed method performed better than PCA.

In this paper a new method for muscle artifact removal in EEG is presented, based on Canonical Correlation Analysis (CCA) as a Blind Source Separation technique (BSS). This method is demonstrated on a synthetic data set. The method out-performed a low pass filter with different cutoff frequencies and an Independent Component Analysis (ICA) based technique for muscle artifact removal. The first preliminary results of a clinical study on 26 ictal EEGs of patients with refractory epilepsy illustrated that the removal of muscle artifact results in a better interpretation of the ictal EEG, leading to an earlier detection of the seizure onset and a better localization of the seizures onset zone. These findings make the current method indispensable for every Epilepsy Monitoring Unit.
