Background: Anhinga melanogaster is a carnivorous water bird native to many Asian countries. A. melanogaster is part of the Old World clade of darters. There is currently significant debate about the organization of the Old World clade due to morphological and genetic ambiguities. It is essential to establish the taxonomic status of A. melanogaster because it was recently listed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as a near threatened species., Methods and Results: The present study utilized a comprehensive molecular approach of the complete mitogenome of A. melanogaster to resolve its taxonomic status within the genus Anhinga. The mitogenome of A. melanogaster comprised of 13 protein-coding genes, 22 tRNA genes, 2 rRNA genes and a control region. A partially duplicated cytochrome b gene and control region were also present., Conclusions: Duplicated mitogenomic segments and phylogenetic analyses suggest that A. melanogaster, A. novaehollandiae, A. rufa and A. anhinga should be considered distinct species within the Old World clade of darters. Translocation, the movement of organisms for conservation purposes, can result in unintended introgression if genetic material flows between populations in new ways. The Bluemask Darter Etheostoma akatulo is a federally endangered species of freshwater fish inhabiting the Caney Fork River system and three of its tributaries (Collins River, Rocky River, and Cane Creek) in Tennessee. The current conservation strategy for Bluemask Darters involves translocating the progeny of broodstock from the Collins River (in the west) to the Calfkiller River (in the east) where the species had been extirpated. In this study, we use ddRAD sequence data from across the extant range to assess this translocation strategy in light of population structure, phylogeny, and demography. We also include museum specimen data to assess morphological variation among extant and extirpated populations. Our analyses reveal substantial genetic and phenotypic disparities between a western population in the Collins River and an eastern population encompassing the Rocky River, Cane Creek, and upper Caney Fork, the two of which shared common ancestry more than 100,000 years ago. Furthermore, morphological analyses classify 12 of 13 Calfkiller River specimens with phenotypes consistent with the eastern population. These results suggest that current translocations perturb the evolutionary boundaries between two delimited populations. Instead, we suggest that repopulating the Calfkiller River using juveniles from the Rocky River could balance conflicting signatures of demography, diversity, and divergence. Dam removal is an increasingly common river restoration option, yet some of the mechanisms leading to ecological changes remain unquantified. We assessed relationships between riffle structure and benthic macroinvertebrate and fish assemblages 2 years after a lowhead dam removal in Ohio, USA. Hydrogeomorphic, water-chemistry, and biotic surveys were conducted at seven study riffles at six time intervals from spring 2014 through summer 2015. The density and diversity of macroinvertebrates and fish were significantly different over time, largely as a function of season (lowest densities in early spring, greatest in summer). Macroinvertebrate, but not fish, assemblage composition was different by time but not riffle. Although hydrogeomorphic characteristics (e.g., streamflow velocity, substrate size) were linked to shifts in macroinvertebrates and fish, chemical water-quality parameters (e.g., dissolved oxygen, nutrient concentrations) were also implicated as potential biotic drivers. Our results indicate that riffle habitat development can be an important mechanism related to restoring sensitive species and biological diversity following dam removal.

To test hypotheses explaining variation in elaborate male colouration across closely related species groups, ancestral-state reconstructions and tests of phylogenetic signal and correlated evolution were used to examine the evolution of male body and fin colouration in a group of sexually dichromatic stream fishes known as darters (Percidae: Etheostomatinae). The presence or absence of red-orange and blue-green male colour traits were scored across six body regions in 99 darter species using a recently estimated amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) phylogeny for comparative analyses. Ancestral-state reconstructions infer the most recent common ancestor of darters to lack red-orange colour and possess blue-green colour on different body regions, suggesting variation between species is due to independent gains of red-orange and losses of blue-green. Colour traits exhibit substantial phylogenetic signal and are highly correlated across body regions. Comparative analyses were repeated using an alternative phylogenetic hypothesis based on one mitochondrial and two nuclear genes, yielding similar results to analyses based on the AFLP phylogeny. Prey may use multiple sensory channels to detect predators, whose cues may differ in altered sensory environments, such as turbid conditions. Depending on the environment, prey may use cues in an additive/complementary manner or in a compensatory manner. First, to determine whether the purely aquatic Barton Springs salamander, Eurycea sosorum, show an antipredator response to visual cues, we examined their activity when exposed to either visual cues of a predatory fish (Lepomis cyanellus) or a non-predatory fish (Etheostoma lepidum). Salamanders decreased activity in response to predator visual cues only. Then, we examined the antipredator response of these salamanders to all matched and mismatched combinations of chemical and visual cues of the same predatory and non-predatory fish in clear and low turbidity conditions. Salamanders decreased activity in response to predator chemical cues matched with predator visual cues or mismatched with non-predator visual cues. Salamanders also increased latency to first move to predator chemical cues mismatched with non-predator visual cues. Salamanders decreased activity and increased latency to first move more in clear as opposed to turbid conditions in all treatment combinations. Our results indicate that salamanders under all conditions and treatments preferentially rely on chemical cues to determine antipredator behavior, although visual cues are potentially utilized in conjunction for latency to first move. Our results also have potential conservation implications, as decreased antipredator behavior was seen in turbid conditions. Elaborate, sexually dimorphic traits are widely thought to evolve under sexual selection through female preference, male-male competition, or both. The orangethroat darter ( Etheostoma spectabile ) is a sexually dichromatic fish in which females exhibit no preferences for male size or coloration. We tested whether these traits affect individual reproductive success in E. spectabile when multiple males are allowed to freely compete for a female. The quality and quantity of male coloration were associated with greater success in maintaining access to the female and in spawning as the primary male (first male to participate). On the other hand, sneaking behavior showed little correlation with coloration. Male breeding coloration in E. spectabile may therefore demonstrate how intrasexual competition can be a predominant factor underlying the evolution of male ornaments.

The hypothesis that males possessing more vivid nuptial colouration are of better quality with regard to individual measures of health such as parasite infection was investigated by taking spectral measurements of orange and blue bars in the nuptial males of a sexually dichromatic stream fish rainbow darter Etheostoma caeruleum to determine if male colouration in this species varied with parasite load in the form of black spot disease. The yellow chroma of orange bars, i.e. the relative contribution of wavelengths in the range of 550-625 nm to total brightness, was the only spectral measurement significantly associated with parasite counts. These results are discussed in the context of sexual selection and the potential of orange bars in E. caeruleum to serve as honest indicators of quality to potential mates., (© 2014 The Fisheries Society of the British Isles.)
